N O I T C E L L O C N A D A M A R L U F R U A COLO Fajer Al Owaish is an aspiring 18 year old Kuwaiti designer, owner, and founder of Boutique’na. With a variety of colorful designs we simply fell in love from the ﬁrst glance. Being blessed, as usual, we had a chance to sit down with Fajer and this is what she had to say to STUDENTALK. When did you start? I started Boutique’na in the spring of 2012. It was a mini home business involving my friends and family.

Who is your favorite designer? and why do you feel your designs are similar? When it comes to favorite, lots of famous designers pop into my mind. When I think deeply about this favorite designer, there is one particular person I respect and call my most favorable designer and he’s Karl Lagerfeld. In some ways we have similarities, not really major ones but in general. Karl has a twist to his designs and likes things to be different in his fashion. Similarly, I try to change my designs from what I see around me and try something new and something unique too. Following Karl’s lead I have used a touch of art in some of my designs.

Who helps you with your designs? I get most of my help from my mother for sure. She’s there to give me some advice and suggestion on what I should do or how to do it and what others may like and dislike.

How long does it take? Time depends on the item itself; sometimes it takes hours, days, and maybe weeks too. Let me give you an example, if I were to work on ten stone bracelets it can take about an hour or two, and if I work on a certain shirt design it may take two to four days. It all depends.

What is your favorite color that you use in your designs? I love using colors. There isn’t any particular color that I call my favorite when it comes to designing, but I don't mix colors that may ruin the certain design and make it look messy but again use colors that are suitable and almost equal.

Where do you come up with your designs? The culture here is where I get most of my ideas. I like to write my ideas down and maybe draw a messy sketch near each. Then give myself a bit of time to think whether it’s suitable to our culture or not. After, I think about the color and material, is it capable of being mixed with a different color or material.

What inspired you to design? This question is a bit challenging, but I've been inspired in many ways. The first inspiration that hit me was during a walk through a Chinese market and seeing all those different types of stones and colors and Boutique'na is what floated to my mind. The second inspiration was the diversity we have here in Kuwait City. The people are so comparative from what I've noticed and it's actually nice to see how people design a variety of different things to sell, so I said to myself, "why not a slight compacting?", and again Boutique'na floated to my mind.

What do you wish or want to become? I used to wish to become many things, but as I grew I chose one unique thing; being a designer. My big goal is to become an event planner in the future, and at the same time have a boutique under my name.

Who is your target for Boutique’na? My main target focuses on teens for now.in the future, big changes might occur and all ages will be capable to wear something from Boutique'na hopefully.

Who is your role model? Of course and without thinking, it obviously is both my parents.

‫ﻣﻦ أﺑﺮزﻫﺎ‪ ،‬ﺣﻤﻠﺔ ﻟﻜﻔﺎﻟﺔ ا ﻳﺘﺎم‪ ،‬وإﻓﻄﺎر ﺻﺎﺋﻢ‪ ،‬وﺣﻤﻠﺔ ﺗﻮﻋﻮﻳﺔ ﻋﻦ اﻟﺒﻴﺌﺔ‪ ،‬وزﻳﺎرة ﻣﺮﻛﺰ ﺣﺴﲔ ﻣﻜﻲ‬ ‫ﺟﻤﻌﺔ‪ ،‬وﻣﺮﻛﺰ اﳋﺮا ﻟﻠﻤﻌﺎﻗﲔ‪ ،‬وزﻳﺎرة دار اﳌﺴﻨﲔ‪ .‬ﻛﻤﺎ أﻧﻨﺎ ﻧﻠﺒﻲ أي دﻋﻮة ﻣﺘﻌﻠﻘﺔ ﺑﺎﻟﻌﻤﻞ‬ ‫اﻟﺘﻄﻮﻋﻲ‪.‬‬

In Ramadan the majority of people tend to be easily provoked. People use fasting as an excuse to get angry at anyone or anything. As for me, I tend to avoid contact with people that I get a negative vibe from.

I don’t think people are productive in Ramadan, in comparison with other months. I believe there are many ways to maintain the productivity in Ramadan such as reading the Quran, sleeping and praying.

I do believe that people should stay productive because life goes on.

In my opinion, students are not as effective in Ramadan as other months. There are some things which make students more effective in Ramadan like sleeping; less class hours and better choices for the timings.

I do believe that is depends on the person. Each individual is different when it comes to the way they behave during this holy month. My rituals remain the same every year, I make sure I read the Quran and pray.

No, but you can manage yourself by reading, sleeping early and trying to smile all the time.

In Ramadan students normally feel tired, so I don’t think that they maintain their progress especially that Ramadan is in summer. Sleeping well and eating “Sohor” are good factors to help the students to present better; working with friends does not hurt.

It depends on the person; I usually rest as much as possible and try to conserve my energy for my studies.

It depends on the student himself and how he is managing his time and during the day. My rituals are praying in the mosque, reading Quran and sleeping.

You want to know more about them? Check the website and take a look at the videos. WHEN DID YOU START? I started bike riding at the age of 17.

WHO GAVE YOU SUPPORT? My father supported me as he is a rider too, which is why I got into riding in the ﬁrst place.

HOW DID YOUR TALENT EVOLVE? The friends around me were the ones who contributed to evolve my talent. As they are all riders, we do a lot of bike rides and as they say, practice makes perfect.

WERE THERE ANY OBSTACLES? The only obstacle was that there isn’t an actual organized track or an organizationl.

WHO IS YOUR MUSE? Travis Pastrana, won several gold medals in X Games, is a famous bike competitor and stunt performer. I have learnt a lot from him.

TODAY WHEN YOU LOOK BACK IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WANT TO CHANGE? There is nothing I regret about. Well maybe spent more time riding.

WHAT’S YOUR FUTURE CAREER WITHIN THIS TALENT? I would like to follow the footsteps of my father since he was the one who inspired and supported me from the start. Like father, like son.

Ali Radwan Hoballah : Beautiful art is left behind for others to remember and appreciate. After meeting up with two talented artists, STUDENTALK team congratulates the novice artist who won the talent competition this month, Ali Rawdan Hoballah. Let’s take a look at Hoballah’s journey in developing his artistic talent through our interview with him. HOW DID YOU START DEVELOPING YOUR TALENT? I started drawing when I was very young. However, I stopped for a while in order to take a break. Then I got back to working on my projects in highschool.

WHAT DID YOU DO TO GET BACK ON TRACK? I started drawing several things such as skulls as well as enriching my grafﬁti skills. Later, I joined the Arts Institute for further education in the ﬁeld of art and understanding my capabilities within my talents.

DID YOU EVER JOIN ANY OTHER COMPETITION? No I didn’t join any other competition; however, I try as much as possible to participate in exhibitions organized by universities. These exhibitions aid developing my talents and gain more experience in the ﬁeld of art. Also, they encourage me to create in-depth research in the ﬁeld I enjoy.

AN EXHIBITION FOR THE CREATIVELY TALENTED

ABDULLATEEF AL-FOZAIE: I CAME BACK SEEKING SUPPORT BUT COULDN’T FIND ANY Abdullateef Al-Fozaie is a Kuwaiti that has studied in an English school, and then continued his studies in Australia and New York. He came back to Kuwait in 2013 seeking a place or a program that supports creative and talented Kuwaitis; however he couldn’t ﬁnd one such an environment that talks to his creative and ethical standing. Since I was seven years old, I wanted to have my own company,related to technology, and when I got back from my studies, I couldn’t see myself working for anyone, that is why I decided to launch my own company “Le Vitesse” which is specialized in computer systems. I have launched “Le Vitesse” in September 2012; however it debuted to the public in the Proud to be Kuwaiti exhibition. The feedback was amazing that I was even offered a venue to hold my own exhibition. And now I am working on launching

The process will be over the length of four weeks, dividing them into four groups of ten with a new set every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8 pm till 12 am. The categories are creative art & design, fashion, technology, culinary arts, non-proﬁt, and more. We’re looking to diversify our participant portfolio giving equal opportunity to all. This exhibition could not be held without the cooperation of Mr. Essa AlSaleh the owner of Alaadin Center in Salmiya, who offered me his center to transform into an open forum to do something new. And we have certain criteria for the people who are interested to join the exhibition that are really talented and work on their own business by themselves. The criteria are that the exhibitors should be Kuwaiti from 21 to 35 years old, and the project needs to be full of creative talent. They can apply through instagram, or through the ofﬁcial website. We are mainly focusing on are children and environmental charities. We are also blessed to have excellent feedback from many sources such as bloggers and sponsors. In the future, we are planning to have monthly exhibitions and seminars and an open forum to share through it the small business stories so that the next generation learns from our mistakes. In my personal life, I am planning to go to medical school after I set up my small business.

a non-proﬁt charity exhibition for small Kuwaiti businesses called Kuwait Young Entrepreneurs. KYE will be held in the newly renovated Aladdin Center in Salmiya during the Holy Month of Ramadan. The idea behind it is to create an open forum for Kuwaiti Entrepreneurs that are trying to start a business to showcase their creativity and innovation without having to gauge their wallets and to protect the greater good and hence the non-proﬁt nature. All our proceeds go to charity. It is simple, in order for us to weed out the undesirables there will be a process of elimination in which a handful of applicants are called back to present their business/project to a panel of judges, if they succeed in grabbing the panel’s attention then and only then can they participate. Our unique selection methodology is what sets us apart from other exhibitions and trade shows; we are looking for individuals with unique talents to showcase true Kuwaiti work ethic and creativity. We are not looking for your run of the mill resellers and re-branders. 40

‫‪Heart to Heart is an annual event and we are entering the third year‬‬ ‫‪now. The idea behind it is to encourage children to consider and think‬‬ ‫‪of other children namely those who reside in hospital during the‬‬ ‫‪festival of Girgiaan. therefore, The idea is that we get the children to‬‬ ‫‪pack Girgiaan with a special message for another child, from the heart‬‬ ‫‪to another heart. this is followed by distribution in the hospital.‬‬ ‫‪Anyone is welcome to join as a volunteer or even bring their children‬‬ ‫‪or siblings to make the Girgiaan bags. I will advise people to follow our‬‬ ‫‪instagram account @spreadpassion for announcements and we will‬‬ ‫‪soon mention the details about it.‬‬

FOX REPRESENTATIVES: OUR ASSOCIATION WITH FOX GOES BACK MANY YEARS. First Trading Company is a subsidiary of Mutawa Alkazi Co. and offers a range of products including motorcycles, marine products, accessories and gear. The company has had a long association with motorsport enthusiasts in this country, as dealers of a number of leading brands like Hyosung and TVS motorcycles, Arctic Cat ATVs, Starcraft boats, and KIPOR generators, and we also sell motorcycle accessories and gear. We recently launched a new showroom in Al Tilal Complex housing 3 international clothing brands – Fox, DC Shoes & Alpinestars.

When did you bring these brands to Kuwait? Our association with Fox Racing goes back many years as we have been retailing their professional racing gear. However we wanted to increase the brand’s presence in Kuwait and also expand in terms of products on offer. Around the same time, we also associated with two other leading brands DC Shoes and Alpinestars clothing. Our new retail concept with all these brands was launched in May this year at Tilal Complex.

What is special about these brands? All the brands that we retail – Fox, DC and Alpinestars are international brands that have their origin in action sports but now offer a great casual clothing line as well. Because it is inspired by action sports and all the brands work closely with leading athletes and professionals from motocross, skateboarding, etc, the products are very technical and performance driven. The products are constructed with attention to detail and keeping high quality standards so it suits an active lifestyle. Of course, they are also excellent in terms of design and styling. Customers will see a good blend of form and function.

What products are available under these brands? We currently have a casual and lifestyle line for men, women, and children that include clothing, footwear and accessories like bags, belts, caps, wallets, etc. In addition, there is a separate section specializing in racing gear such as jerseys, racing pants, helmets, gloves and protection gear.

You mentioned protection gear. To what extent is such gear important to those who practice sports such as motocross? And are people in Kuwait aware of how important it is to wear them? In any kind of sporting activity, proper gear especially protection gear is very important. Surely people in Kuwait understand that and give importance to it as it is reﬂected in the kind of enquiries that we get.

What is the most demanded item by the Kuwaiti market? We get a lot of customers for helmets and safety gear such as deﬂectors (chest protectors), knee guards, elbow guards etc. as these are specialized and high quality products that deliver performance. Once the racing season begins, our gloves are a total sell-out!

Tell us a bit about your other best sellers this season Fox Racing has the Tech tees which are extremely light and have a soft natural feel. They are great for Kuwait weather. Some styles also come with UV protection. Our board shorts and walk shorts are also doing very well. The 42

best selling styles are the RD Champ and Denial Twist Shorts from DC and the Hydro Series shorts from Fox which is designed to look like a walk short but functions like a board short. The Fox Bolted board short is one of our latest offerings and has got a good response. It comes with a 4 way stretch fabric which makes it very comfortable. DC Shoes has some great products especially in footwear. The Versaﬂex 2 which we call a ‘Full Length Airbag’ is comfort at its best. At a price of 31 KD, it is also excellent value. There is also a wide range of sandals for which we have got a good response.

We were so delighted at the quality of food at Smashburger’s new branch opening that we decided to have it as STUDENTALK’S first restaurant review. Our gracious hosts served us with a feast fit for a king, which we could not help ourselves but to devour it. To start it off, we had the Feta Harvest, the sunflower and pumpkin seeds give it that extra crunch and twist in flavor. When it comes to sides, we couldn’t make up our minds on what to have, so we simply had all that our stomachs could handle. It was hard picking a favorite from the classical French fries, smashfries, veggie frites, cheese fries, Kuwait fries, and sweet potato fries; however, we eventually managed to narrow it down to two, their namesake fries, which came as a close second to the sweet potato fries, it blew our minds that we had to take some back to share with our colleagues. As we are the ultimate carnivores, here at STUDENTALK, this is the real deal. Smashburger gets its name from the fascinating way that they make their burgers. The Angus beef is made into a ball then literally SMASHED onto the grill. We had the Classic Smash, Truffle Mushroom, BBQ Bacon and Cheddar, Colorado Burger (Yes, we are special to get last month’s special) and the burger that made it to Gourmet lines top 10 American Style burger outside the United States, just three months after its debut - the Kuwait Burger. This time it was three way draw between the Truffle mushroom, BBQ Bacon and Cheddar, and the infamous Kuwait Burger. For all you spicy lovers out there, the Kuwait Burger has spicy pepper-jack chesse and grilled jalapeños, with labneh and cucumber for that cooling effect, all wrapped up in a spicy chipotle bun. 44

Kuwait Burger At this point, our jeans were unbuttoned but we still had the chicken to try. Of course, all burgers come in their chicken (grilled or crispy) counterparts, and let us tell you this; even though they’re called Smashburger we think that their chicken is their best asset. We had this month’s special, the Chicago Burger, but with crispy chicken instead, and it was to die for. From how good their chicken was, one of our team members to decided to have a crispy chicken with egg buns “au natural” without any add-ons and still managed to swallow the whole thing in a blink of an eye. As we are not normal human beings (while others won’t be able to place anything else in their mouths), we could not leave before having the Angus Beef Hot Dog. We tried the Chicago Hot Dog, a beautiful blend of tomatoes, pickles, peppers, relish, onions and yellow mustard. What is a better way to end your meal than with a cold milkshake, Oreo or Butterﬁnger? Under the sponsorship of Wataniya Telecom, the representatives spent three days in Qatar attending conference seminars with its various workshops during the day, and later visiting Doha’s diverse sites in the evening. Conference President and Head Organizer, Jassim Fakhro, greeted all newcomers on the first day with his opening speech and talked about the role of public relations in the society and how it reflects the vital and essential role of public relations in development efforts and achieving the vision of G.C.C. countries for a better future. The conference gathered various industry leaders in the field of Public Relations and Communications from various countries in the Arab region. Its main objective was for attendees to exchange ideas and experiences on the latest trends and challenges and solutions for PR in theGulf region. The second day of the conference consisted of workshops where each delegate was given the opportunity to choose which workshop to participate in. GUST staff and students were some of the workshops’ most active participants as each delegate was eager to lead their group and speak publically to present the final campaigns they came up with. The conference ended with a closing ceremony with various business leaders, including the President of the International PR Association, and PR instructors sharing their experiences in the field. The conference was an enjoyable and educational experience for all attendees. Delegates left having learned new lessons about Public Relations and developed better communication skills and techniques. The sessions and workshops of the conference were carefully selected to provide a platform for the best experts of public relations regionally, globally, and from the Arab world.
