His positivity changed his perspective

Dear Students,

Ahmad Al-Therban ahmad@ph7-kw.com

Goooooood Morning Sunshine!! This is how I start my day, every day. And I smile. I smile at the strangers on the streets... I smile every time I go into a business meeting... And I talk… I talk in a motivated, high-spirited tone, putting that smile into my words and the world looks at me kind of strange! Are you really always happy? Happy? Always? How can anyone ever be always happy? A positive attitude is never about seeking an unrealistic state of continuous happiness, that would probably feel like being comatose. A positive attitude is more about “regardless” and “inspite of” what one might be going through at the moment, one is still putting the effort into making his/her world, and the world in general, a better place. Sulking… will only prolong your pain Regretting… will never allow you to move forward Worrying… might paralyze you But a smile... even when made with effort, will surely help you and those around you be more comfortable with their today, and hopeful of a better tomorrow. Positive attitude is not only about smiling, but it surely starts there. Let us never forget the old Arab proverb passed on from generation to generation, only to be now scientifically proven: “Smile and the world will smile back at you” May the world always smile at you my students, Till next issue,

Zeina Mokaddam

A*tistic The Artistic Autistic: His Attitude defines the word!

We all face challenges in our lives; whether we are born with them or run into them as we grow older. These challenges are not what define us, but the way we deal with them does. Abdullah Al-Hendi, born with Autism, has faced it head on, with his passion for Art and Design, he strives to overcome any challenges that head his way and achieve his dream. He moved back to Kuwait from the United States in 2011, and has been committed to becoming a graphic designer, working in digital art, sketching, painting, and even drawing Manga. At 28 years old, Abdullah has completed a degree in Marketing from ACK and is currently seeking a bachelor in Graphic Design at AUK.

Don’t give up on your dreams or goals

‫قصة الغالف‬

Don’t let anyone lecture you or tell you what you should do

Abdullah shared with us some of the challenges he’s faced since moving back from Iowa to Kuwait. He told us what his greatest challenge was and why, the culture shock. As Abdullah only lived in Kuwait at a young age, he was unable to fully comprehend the differences between him and other children his age, but as an adult, he’s now able to recognize the actions of those around him. Unfortunately, many in our society lack the knowledge when it comes to mental conditions, such as autism, thus have a negative connotation or even look down at those who suffer from it or any condition that is not considered the “norm”. It is heartbreaking to hear how people would not respond when he spoke to them, or how his classmates would say “hello” to the entire classroom, except him. However, this has only pushed Abdullah to

focus on his studies and pursue his goals instead of worry about what others think. After seeing a doctor who endures the same condition as him and learning more about it, Abdullah’s doctor has helped him improve in several aspects. He now knows what the right food to eat is, in order to balance his diet and mood. This has also given him a positive attitude towards socializing, as he has learnt different techniques to make it easier for him to have a conversation, one of which is not looking someone directly in the face when speaking to them. With practice and perseverance he hopes to be able to speak to someone while looking them in the eye. When it comes to his art, roses are not only his favorite thing to draw, but they inspire him to sketch as well. His passion for digital art was born after participating in a graphic

design workshop. Comic books and Manga have a special pull on Abdullah, his goal after graduation is to create his own comics along with owning a comic book store.

Tidbits: • Loves to volunteer • Has a twin sister • Follows Kate Perry, and Hessa Al Loughani on snapchat • Wake up, goes to class, gets back home, has his first meal, sits on his laptop (watches cartoons/movies), goes out with friends to cafes or goes to the gym (Mixed Martial Arts), plays video games

Positive Attitude What makes norms normal?

Norms. What makes norms normal? And isn’t the word normal itself relative to where you happen to be on this planet? Even our faces are all just skin and bones, but somehow some skin is defined as beautiful and some skin isn’t. We are all born blank slates, a plain sheet of paper. But depending on the culture or society you are born around, certain things are acceptable and certain things aren’t, happiness in itself is relative as well. What makes some people happy may not generally be what floats your boat.

For example if we are to look at our current location, Kuwait, and the generation above us, or the generation before them, what defined their happiness? A stable income, security and most likely marriage within a generally early age. It was a simple life really, but that was all they needed. Let’s take a look as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

20

What defines our ‘happiness’ or ‘positivity’ is created by satisfying those needs above. Depending on where you are in life, you will always strive for more. So the generations before us generally were satisfied right at the “Love and Belonging” stage. Then, having kids at such a young age, they probably did not have the time to work on the last two stages, and especially not the final one. The first need a human must attain is the physiological need, basically health, food and water. Then it goes on to safety, having a zone that is your own, usually a home, and then finding a partner to share it with. A human can be completely content with just those. But, what if a human being was born on the third stage of happiness? I’m healthy, I have a safe home, and I’m loved and surrounded by family. That is where the majority of us are from birth. But what makes us human is the need to progress, so naturally, unlike our ancestors, because we did not have to work on getting to stage three of Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, we owe it to ourselves to go even higher, take the next step. First, to work on our esteem, gain skills and talents, getting honored and recognized. Once that happens, there still is more, and this is where the controversy lies in this region. Selfactualization; There are

very few people on Earth who have reached this stage. These are the ones that are not only content with their lives, but who also love who they’ve become. However, that requires being you and loving who you are, and being yourself isn’t always acceptable.

happiness. Realizing that happiness and a positive life isn’t as black or white as it used to be. Our world has gotten so much bigger, options are growing and we’ve come to realize maybe the comfortable life isn’t for everyone.

Another factor that plays into the difference of opinion on what a positive life looks like is that unlike now, traveling wasn’t as easily an option. So, they tended to stay in a little bubble, where opinions were contagious. Happiness was security and comfort for the most part. But now, we’re seeing the world, either in person or through social media, we’re slowly escaping our bubble and witnessing other people’s forms of

Personally, I’ve lived the first two decades of my life trying my hardest in every which way possible to fit into this bubble of happiness, the comfortable kind. It shaped itself into a mask, smiling on the outside but internally I was empty of any genuine positivity. Seeing the world around me, travelling to different places and meeting the locals instead of sticking to the usual touristy places opened up my eyes and with it my mind. People

could be happy without having to follow the herd? Was it possible? It was, but was it easy to break out of it, with so many people watching you, checking in on you and your behavior? It absolutely is not. In an academic paper in the journal “American Quarterly”, 1976 by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, she stated, “Well-behaved women seldom make history”. This is true, if all of us behaved the same and followed every rule blindly, the world would not progress at all. We would be stuck doing the same old dull routine for the sake of assuming that was what a positive life is. But no, positivity and happiness is relative, just like, what defines beauty? It is all completely relative. Live and Let live.

Tefaseel An Exhibition by AIAS

Tefaseel, in English “Details” is an annual design exhibition held to create a bridge between the architectural students and the renowned architectural firms of Kuwait. Hosted by Kuwait University and The American Institute of Architectural Students, this year’s exhibition took place in Al Hamra Hall on March 2nd through the 4th and was based off the theme, Kinetics. Architectural Kinetics is the notion of design, which allows parts of the structure to move, while maintaining the overall structural integrity. Upon entering the exhibition hall, ones sight is quickly drawn around the room, flowing with the movement from one piece to the next. “Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth”, as expressed on one the designs; you are provided with the notion that you see things as you believe them and you believe them as you see them. As for us, we saw what we thought to believe is yet another epic step in the world of architecture.

2015/641

The professional architecture firms, as leaders in the architectural world and students aspiring to become amongst the greatest architects, combined creativity with determination to create inspiration. We sat with the President of AIAS, Hessa Al-Habashi, where she told us about their experience, “It was a lot of hard work and took a lot of time but it was worth it in the end, as the students were able to create

1804080 www.burgan.com 26

something beautiful. Last year was memorable and we looked to improve on it this year, which I believe we did very well.” The hall filled with established and inspiring architects, design and creative enthusiasts, and merely individuals who looked to find motivation, inspiration, and splendor were far from disappointed, given the opportunity to not only observe all of this, but also feel like a part of it.

The Cause Events with an Impact

The Cause, a student club at The Gulf University of Science and Technology (GUST), aims to raise awareness towards children in need. They kicked off their month long season with a fundraising carnival for kids to enjoy at the Scientific Center. To make things interesting for the kids, the carnival was inspired by treasure maps. Once the children completed activities at a booth, such as, painting and handcrafts, they would get a stamp; when they collected three, they were able to exchange them for treats. COMPETITING FOR A CAUSE! Three companies along with their agencies partook in a friendly competition to see who would raise the most amount of money in one month. A conference will be held at GUST from April 10th to the 14th, where all participants will be able to share their experience and what they have done throughout the month. The conference will conclude with a closing ceremony. The forces behind The Cause are Public Relations students, three professors, along with, student volunteers from varying majors

who wanted to support this initiative. Their goal is to turn it into an annual event, in order to raise awareness that there are people out there who need help, no matter the size.

Pipedream A Fantasy Of A Better Reality

Kuwait is known around the Arab world as the starting point for many musicians. The Kuwaiti audience has always had a taste for quality, but that was the case with Arabic music alone. English music was always an underground movement, BUT THAT’S NOT THE CASE ANYMORE! Talented musicians and bands have been emerging at a rapid rate nowadays.

‫المشهد المحلي فنان الشهر‬

Our dad says have fun, while our mom calls us idiots for playing music

Four young talented Kuwaiti musicians, Jasmie, Taymour, Midge, and Tily, together make up PIPEDREAM. We had the pleasure of meeting one of Kuwait’s most prominent bands and listen to them rehearse. The three brothers Jasmie, Midge, and Tily along with Bader (an original/ former member) formed the band in the summer of 2015. In the summer, Bader left to England and Sam (a former member) took his place and joined the band for a while before leaving to Canada. Taymour, the newest member of the band has taken up the mantle of the forth member; stepping in about a month ago, giving the band enough time to be ready to prepare and practice for Battle of the Bands.

watching the four of them jam together, we felt this harmony between them that comes to life during their performance. They were so transparent during their practice, that we quickly picked up on some of their traits, Midge, the comedian of the group, Taymour, the straightforward perfectionist, Tily, laid back and easy going, and Jasmie, how shall we put this, is simply the stubborn one. The guys are planning to begin recording their music soon, as the opportunity has presented itself through Taymour’s recording studio.

Tidbits:

• Midge & Tily participated in the X-Factor (never again) • Audience scared to move/ dance • Will perform at the American Base this month • The brothers lived in the United States until 2002 • Their inspiration is the band Caravan

Pipedream plays classics and originals, they prefer to play songs from the 60s and 70s, and the Canterbury scene as it is when they consider the prime of music to be. Artspace String Art & Stencil Design

Artspace is a visionary concept in Kuwait, pioneered by a team dedicated to artistic expression. Every aspect of Artspace has been carefully curated to help you explore art as a personal talent, and shape your own artistic voice.

Project Name: String Art & Stencil Design Level: Beginner/ Intermediate Duration: 2 hours What you’ll need for the String Art piece: • Wooden Board (Size of your choice) • Hammer • Nails • Strings • Acrylic Paint • 1 medium brush for paint • Tracing paper/ Carbon sheet What you’ll need for the Stencil: • Cardboard Paper (You don’t need to buy one, just tear a cardboard piece from any recycled box around) • Pencil ( To create whichever stencil shape you like) • Ruler (If you are in the mood for some geometry) • Scissors

Step 1:

Step2:

Step 3: (Optional)

Let’s prepare the wooden piece.

Create your own stencil. (Optional) We did a chevron pattern in the picture above. Using your pencil, create whichever pattern shape you prefer and then start cutting out to create a stencil. (As simple as that!).

Now that your board is dry and your stencil is ready, start creating a background-stenciled design however you prefer. Use your imagination and dare yourself! Once you are done, set aside to dry or use a hair-dryer.

Use a medium brush dipped in your choice of color, and start painting the surface. You can use as many colors as you like. *Tip: once you are done, put it aside to dry!

38

‫المشهد المحلي‬

Step 4:

Step 5:

Step 6:

For this project, we did an Arabic letter as a sample. However, you can do any shape, letter, design you prefer. Print out your design using any office printer and start tracing it on the board using a tracing paper/carbon sheet and a pencil. (You can easily find them in any stationary store).

In this step, we will begin hammering nails all around the outline of your design. Leave a 1cm space between each nail (you don’t need to be accurate, just make sure all your nail spaces are somehow equal and stable).

Now that you are done with creating a nails outline, tie 3 knots on a corner nail of your design. This step is essential to ensure your string won’t untie along the progress.

You don’t need to paint a masterpiece to create beautiful art!

Step 7: Using the string, start going around the outline of your design. Going back and forth with your string. There is no rule for this. Finish your design by tying off the string the same way you started. Trim any excess string using scissors. Instagram: @artspaceq8

Bader Al-Khamees Soaring beyond the heights

Currently holding three plus years of experience since his first of now 500 jumps and recently receiving his “coach” rating, Bader Al-Khamees is on the continued pursuit of achieving his dream of becoming a professional skydiver.

“Practice makes perfect”, a saying he lives by, Bader is chasing after new drop zones and views from above to add to his list, some of which include; Kuwait, Dubai, Russia and Spain. These new drop zones he chases after he believes will enable him with the opportunity to meet new people, discover the world, and further teach him more about all things related to skydiving. The buzz and hype about this young skydiver developed rapidly when he created a video commemorating Kuwait’s National and Liberation days during the month of February. Bader, at 10,000feet, jumped over the clouds of Spain at skydive Empuriabrava with the Kuwaiti flag. The video of his jump has over 160,000 views and counting. When asking Bader about why he created a commemoration video of this jump, he says, “Why not? I am capable of doing something good and making others smile. I was able to make people happy by doing that and I was able to receive some amazing feedback from it. People who saw it kept sharing and reposting it for over a week afterwards and it made me extremely proud.” As Bader maintains his positive attitude and continuous desire to chase after his dream, his long term plan is to create more awareness of the sport of skydiving. Hoping to be able to get into championships, stating “I want to work to make it happen. I hope to get a sponsor to help me with this and work towards getting the sport more popular in Kuwait. All other countries in the Middle East have teams, but we don’t and I think it’s important to try making it happen.” Bader Al-Khamees, will not be a name easily forgotten, as each day he takes a step closer to reach his goal, achieve his dreams of becoming one of the first professional skydivers in Kuwait and overall revolutionize the view of skydivers in Kuwait.

Red Bull Music Academy First time in Kuwait: Electronica Musician ETYEN

Music unites. This is not just a common phrase, rather, it is what happened for two days at Dar Al Athar Al Islamiyya in Yarmouk. Red Bull Music Academy has brought together artists from different parts of the world to Kuwait in order to share their passion and participate in the second Red Bull Music Academy Session Kuwait. The academy gathered musicians, composers, producers and vocalists from Kuwait and gave them the opportunity to be part of workshops, talks and share their experience with some of the most talented international and regional musicians. One of the most notable attendances during the sessions and the live performance of Kuwait Rising Music Festival was Samer Etienne Chami aka Etyen – Music producer and Electronica musician from Beirut. How do you feel about being part of the Red Bull Music Academy session? This is not my first time participating in a RBMA event. A month ago, I took part in RBMA Bass Camp Dubai and it was fantastic! I have participated in many other Red Bull Music Academy events in Lebanon in the last few years.I met Zahed Sultan, the host of the event in Beirut during a Red Bull Music Academy special event in Beirut last year that we were both playing, and this is how I got in here. It is a great opportunity to be here, the interaction with the audience is great.

Instagram: @sameretienne Facebook: ETYEN Twitter:@ETYENmusic

When did you start a career in music? I put out the first Etyen EP and started performing about three years ago, before that, I was playing in bands as a guitarist and singer. I eventually started recording by myself and then producing – I realized I was good at it and thought this is what I wanted to do. When I went to London, I enrolled in sound engineering and mixing courses and once I returned to Beirut, I released my first EP “Happy New Year”.

What inspires you as a musician? Nature inspires me a lot. For instance, I was part of a musical residency in seclusion in the mountains of Saratoga, California along with other musicians – this was the most inspiring time of my life! I say nature because I truly believe that music is a part of nature; everything around you speaks and produces sounds; the trees, the wind, the running water. I am also influenced by people’s ideas (that speak to me) – philosophers, novelists…etc., and my own experiences, obviously. Other than nature, what gets you wanting to create music? Heartbreak or any human experience exchanged with someone else, like love and friendship – it all inspires me to create music.

How long does it usually take you to put together a track? It really depends, sometimes inspiration will be flowing through and the idea develops and mature without me even thinking about it. I have done tracks in a day, others over weeks where I leave it and then go back with fresh outlook. I think it is important to let ideas simmer in your head but also take initiative and let yourself go when you feel inspiration coming. What, in your opinion, describes music best? Itself – I do not like to describe or try to describe music. When you hear it, you will understand what it is. Who did you grow up listening to? I listened to lots and lots of different stuff. My favorite band growing up was SigurRos – an Icelandic post ambient rock outfit. I went through many phases and was really into Radiohead for a long time. As an adolescent, I listened to a lot of rock, from progressive to classic to punk and so on. Are you currently working on something new? I am currently working on a billion things. Releasing 2 EPs this year besides 6 or 7 different collaborations with artists internationally. Music videos, new live concept, so much really, you will have to follow me on social media to stay updated!

Was music an intrinsic passion or did you have to learn it? I have taken courses in sound engineering and mixing – as a child I learned to play the piano, which rather formed an important base for me. I come from a family that has a deep connection to music. I taught myself guitar and a bunch of instruments growing up and there isn’t a time I can think of when music wasn’t my main passion.

Startup Kuwait Entrepreneurial Seminars at BHCK and GUST

Startup Kuwait’s curriculum development continues to focus on providing student entrepreneurial teams with content that is relevant to Kuwait, the GCC and the interest of students. After helping the students to identify and think through their business ideas, we introduced the concept of Lean Startup and Minimum Viable Product. These concepts are driving entrepreneurship worldwide today - serving as the management philosophy behind entrepreneurship and startups. We are teaching the students about the differences in product development and marketing in a new company and a larger multi-national. We are also introducing the students to the concepts of guerrilla marketing, the role of technology in being an entrepreneur, and the importance of communication of your idea to the people you reach. In addition, Startup Kuwait is, as needed, assisting the faculty of its five university partners to train their colleagues on concepts related to entrepreneurship and Lean Startup. We are helping them to help their student entrepreneurship teams, and partner schools have delivered a series of lectures and exercises on lean starts for their participating students. Further to the workshops partner universities have through Startup Kuwait’s extensive Network been able to bridge local entrepreneurial experiences. Students and faculty members have had engaging presentations by founders of Choowy Goowy (Essa Abdulla Behbehani) and SAVECO (Noor Al Qatami). Box Hill College has continued its March startup activities through holding Lean Start Up and Guerilla Marketing workshops for participating students. In addition, the students have benefited from Ms. Noor AlQatami’s presentation and gained insights into the importance of creating dynamic teams in entrepreneurial endeavors and overcoming failures and learning from mistakes in the process. Participating student, Hanadi Al Bolouchi, who is working on a technology startup idea called the lectures by Mr. Essa Behbehani and Ms. Noor Al Qatami as treasures for students who are just getting started on their entrepreneurial journeys. Sabah Husainalso stated that listening to the stories of the aforementioned entrepreneurs motivated her to continue on with the competition without

the fear of failure. Sabah is working on a startup in food and beverage sector. Hawraa Jaweli stated that the workshops and guest speakers helped put in perspective what it means to be an entrepreneur and helped her team understand what needs to be done in their social services startup idea.

Dr. Mohamed Elian, said, “We believe it is important to open a dialogue between aspiring entrepreneurs, and those who have succeeded in launching their businesses to showcase the level of commitment and hard work it takes, and encourage them to take the steps necessary to thrive.”

In April, partner universities have the opportunity to benefit from the experiences of regional entrepreneurs. GUST’s College of Business Administration also hosted a special seminar on its campus last week as part of the Startup Kuwait activities, led by Ms. Noor Al-Qatami. The seminar focused on the challenges and solutions of entrepreneurship, and was attended by GUST students, faculty members, and their peers from the Australian College of Kuwait.

Saveco CEO, Al-Qatami, who was also recently featured on ArabianBusiness. com as Woman Entrepreneur of the Week, enumerated the common challenges new start-ups are likely to face in Kuwait, and advised prospective entrepreneurs on different ways to handle certain situations and get the results they need. At the end of the presentation, students asked questions about the start-up scene in Kuwait, and sought tips on how to go about launching their business ventures.

After welcoming the attendees and thanking the speaker for leading the seminar, GUST’s College of Business Administration Dean,

Ms. Al-Qatami spoke to the audience about her entrepreneurial journey, challenges she had to overcome, solutions she came up

with to surmount obstacles, milestones she crossed while setting up her business, and the key factors that helped her grow it to its current level. Saveco opened in 2010 with the goal of bringing convenience and low cost quality products to the local market as a brick and mortar hypermarket. In only five years, Saveco now owns restaurants, cafes, a distribution company, franchises, children’s toy stores, and much more. Startup Kuwait is an initiative launched by Global Centre at Kuwait University to encourage students to understand the challenges and opportunities of entrepreneurship, and be able to work on and launch their own business ideas. As a part of this initiative, GUST students will continue to work on their startup business ideas during the semester, after which, top teams from GUST will compete against their peers from other universities.

This Asian cultural adventure satisfied every history buff, adrenaline junkie, and curious traveler! On a 7-day journey through Vietnam, LOYAC explorers visited historic war zones, biked through some of the most ecologically diverse national parks in the region, and volunteered at family-run vegetable farms. By the end of the program, participants had achieved a higher sense of self awareness, tolerance and social responsibility. When we asked each participant on the last day, “What has this trip taught you about yourself that you had not realized before?”, They answered: Manal: “That I can shift from the adult world to the youth world. I did not know that I can make a quick spontaneous decision like my decision to join this trip and be happy with it.” Shatha: “That I like observing cultures” Hasan: “Now I know I am missing a lot about life because I am busy.” Noor: “I am not a person who gets homesick. I like to be more out than in…. away from the norm.” Aziz: “I can disconnect at anytime and even sleep on the bus” Meshari: “That I can be open and try new foods. I should not eat with my eyes. Now I know that I like to be in the kitchen and cook.” Samer: “I learnt that a trip of 3 generations can succeed.” Ali: “I tend to focus on one thing at a time and thus lose my focus on other things”

A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon

Watches

The latest masterpiece from Saxony pairs three complications with five supplementary functions. This unique timepiece by A. Lange & Söhne is not only technically impressive, but also stands out with a superbly organised face despite the density of information it displays.

Datograph Datograph designates a column-wheel chronograph with a precisely jumping minute counter, a flyback function and the typical Lange outsize date. To master the challenge of precise short time measurements, the product developers relied on an ingenious feature that had already proven itself in the Datograph Up/ Down. It distils three major technical advances in chronograph design into one: the column-wheel mechanism assures that all chronograph functions are reliably controlled. Perpetual Perpetual, the middle element of the name, refers to a instantaneously jumping perpetual calendar with a moon-phase display. All indications of the perpetual calendar – including the outsize date as well as the day-of-week, month and leap-year displays in subsidiary dials – switch instantaneously and thus provide unambiguous readings at all times. Tourbillon The fascinating tourbillon mechanism is exposed by the sapphire-crystal caseback and the open tourbillon bridge. There, the escapement rotates about its own axis once a minute inside the filigreed cage. This rotary motion offsets the influence of gravity on the balance wheel with eccentric poising weights. The Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon is yet another manifestation of A. Lange & Söhne’s determination to never stand still and to test the limits of mechanical horology.

Calling all Athletes How Physical Therapy can help you

Physical therapy can be the savior of an injured athlete. Many of the injuries sustained by athletes can cause chronic pain, discomfort, and worse of all make it impossible to participate in sports either temporarily or permanently. Luckily for the injured athlete there are a range of options that can treat their injury, one of which is physical therapy.

Overcome and work through injuries with physical therapy. Consistency in treatments, patience and dedication from the patient and therapist, makes it possible to achieve a total recovery for many athletic injuries. Physical therapists help restore function, improve mobility, alleviate pain, and limit physical disabilities of patients, including professional and student athletes, with sports related injuries. Sports injuries have been the reason behind many athletes being sidelined for games, seasons, and even entire careers. Injuries are common for athletes participating in competitions and training sessions. Poor training routines, lack of warm-ups, and poor conditioning are just a few of the causes of sports injuries. This is especially true for student athletes just beginning their sports careers; one injury can set them back an entire season or even worse the rest of their sports careers. As an athlete, your body is your most important instrument. It must be in great condition, as well as injury and pain free. At the same time, as an athlete, your body is under a lot of stress from constant training and giving it your all against your competition. This makes it extremely easy for athletes to sustain sports related injuries, which can range from a sprain or sore muscles to dislocations, torn tendons, broken bones, and much more. Injuries that athletes tend to suffer from are acute trauma or overusing a specific body part. When an injury does occur, physical therapy can make all the difference. To achieve the best results after a sports related injury, all healthcare professionals must work together to ensure that the athlete can make a full recovery. It is common for serious injuries to require surgery. Typically, orthopedic surgeons restore an athlete’s biomechanics, but physical therapy post-surgery helps the athlete return to normal, with pain free function, and fully recover. Techniques and treatments offered by physical therapists to

62

athletes post surgery can substantially change the outcome and further allow athletes to return to their usual standards of play. Physical therapy is also important for nonoperative patients. Some of the greatest recoveries come from athletes who are treated completely through physical therapy, having made full recoveries quicker than those who have undergone surgeries. It goes far beyond simply applying ice or heat packs to an injured athlete (although this is usually an important first step towards treatment). Physical therapists perform tests on injured athletes allowing them to hone in on the source of the problem. Enabling them to treat the root of the problem, heal the injury as well as strengthen the surrounding muscles, improve blood flow, and increase endurance. A massively important role in an athlete’s recovery is played through physical therapy

treatment. The therapist sees an athlete on a regular basis, records and monitors progress, and actively helps the athlete recover in order to return back to their sport. Just as every athlete is unique, so is every injury. With this the therapist is given the opportunity and ability to create individualized treatment plans for each athlete. No two athletes are treated exactly the same as the treatments are tailored to the specific needs of an individual athlete. Not only is it used to treat injuries, many young athletes and their parents do not realize the benefits of physical therapy until after an injury has already occurred. It is possible for physical therapists to identify athletes who are at risk of injuries by doing postural assessments and evaluations. Athletes who go through assessments and studies of their specific biomechanics are far less likely to suffer from injuries.

Healthier Looking Skin 5 Simple steps for better skin When it comes to health, many of us think internally and forget about our largest organ! Having healthy and better-looking skin can effect us in many ways, including a more positive attitude and vibrant outlook towards life. Here are five steps that get you closer towards having better skin. 1- Drink plenty of water As your skin is made up of approximately 60% water, drinking more water will always make your skin look fresh and glowing. Your skin is more exposed to dryness and wrinkles if kept dehydrated; therefore hydrating your body helps prevent dryness and wrinkles. If you’re not a fan of drinking water, adding a little flavor to your water can be a good idea to get yourself in the habit of drinking more water. For better results and a little extra flavoring, add slices of cucumber to your water, as it’s known to help improve your skin complexion; or add slices of lemon, as it will help in minimizing skin pimples and acne. 2- Deeply scrub your skin Scrubbing your face and skin once or twice a week would help improve the texture of your skin, removing all the dead skin and making your skin softer. Scrubbing gives great results as long as we’re careful when choosing a scrub; especially if you have sensitive skin that might be allergic to certain products or ingredient. To be on the safe side, always rely on homemade scrubs as they usually don’t contain any chemicals or ingredients that might cause you to break out. My favorite homemade scrub is honey and brown sugar; it works wonders on various skin types and doesn’t usually cause any allergic reactions. Recipe: Mix 2 tablespoons of brown sugar with 2 tablespoons of honey. Leave mixture in a cool area for 5-10 minutes. Then, use the mixture to exfoliate your skin; when you are done, rinse with warm water. 3- Moisturizing Masks Applying moisturizing masks once or twice a week can help nourish your skin and make it look healthier. The amount of moisturizing masks you apply to your skin depends on your skin type. If you have oily skin, it’s enough to apply a moisturizing mask once a week; if you have dry skin, try to apply the mask two or three times a week. It is very important to pick

masks that suit your skin type, and it is also important to ensure we apply masks that won’t make us break out, especially since we keep them on for a while. This is why I not only find homemade masks are the safer choice, but they are also easy to make. One of the most popular moisturizing masks is made of yogurt and cucumber. Recipe: In your mixer, apply half a cup of thick yogurt along with one cucumber (only leave the cucumber skin if it’s in good condition). When ingredients are fully blended, freeze mixture for half an hour then apply smoothly on your skin leave it on your skin for 10-15 minutes, then wash it out with warm water. For better results apply two slices of cucumbers on your eyes along with the mask to help reduce eye puffiness and dark circles. 4- Always apply sunscreen before going out We all know that sun exposure is important for our skin and bodies as it provides us with

Vitamin D; however, high exposure to ultraviolet radiation can damage our skin; it could be defined as one of the main reason behind wrinkles and skin discoloration, and increased freckles, which may also lead to increased risk of skin cancer. Applying sunscreen before you leave should be as important as brushing your teeth. Always apply it before your foundation or bb cream. You can also find many foundations and moisturizers that contain SPF, which is basically sun protection, always go with SPF 50+ for increased protection. 5- Never sleep with makeup on Sleeping with makeup increases wrinkles and larger pores since the chemicals in our makeup can react over night. Always wash your skin thoroughly before you sleep, even if you are feeling lazy. Dab a piece of cotton in cold milk or olive oil and softly apply it to your skin as a toner, this can help soften and nourish your skin overnight.

Gianni Infantino The New President of FIFA

Sepp Blatter has been the President for a very long time but, with the controversy that surrounded him and FIFA, there was a desperate need for change. Gianni Infantino has been chosen to lead the change but will it be possible?

64

‫أخبار كرة القدم األوروبية‬

Who is Infantino? Gianni Infantino really knows his way in the football world, no one can doubt that! Before being elected FIFA President, Infantino was the UEFA General Secretary since 2009 and was part of FIFA since 2000. He was in charge of a major team that has helped strengthen both national and club football in Europe and increased UEFA’s reputation as a respected and credible international governing body. He also led the fight against threats to the integrity of football such as racism, violence, and match-fixing. What Happens To Blatter? Sepp Blatter, along with UEFA President, Michel Platini (a previous contender to replace Blatter), have both been handed an six-year ban from any football related activity after a thorough investigation. With the football world in shock and confusion, the new President had to be elected as soon as possible. Gianni Infantino went against Sheikh Salman and, on the final night, it was the Swiss who came out with the majority of the votes.

What To Expect in FIFA: For the football followers out there, you cannot expect too much change in front of your televisions as you lead your favorite team. Having said that, the governing body of football is going through some massive changes and, especially when looking at the international competitions (such as the FIFA World Cup), changes will most probably be seen. With Gianni Infantino at the helm, here is what we can expect: • The Road To Reform? There are a few changes at top management this time and Infantino will be limited to three four-year terms in order to make things work. Yes, that’s definitely an extremely long time but he will have to work with a compliance officer and each confederation will have a female representative on FIFA’s ruling council. • The 2018 & 2022 World Cups There has been a lot of talk about the upcoming FIFA World Cups but nothing is expected to change there as of yet. The 2018

World Cup will be held in Russia and, even if there was anything against it, it’s a little too late to move now. Furthermore, Infantino did not make re-voting for the 2022 competition part of his plan. Therefore, it seems as though the 2022 World Cup will be held in Qatar in November/December of that year. •Expect The Investigations to Continue They won’t end anytime soon and we are all expecting to even see more arrests come out this year. The investigations are led by U.S. attorney General Loretta Lynch. There are many unsolved mysteries regarding FIFA and don’t be surprised to see a lot of information leaked as time goes on. •Prove the Difference Gianni Infantino has a lot of similarities to Sepp Blatter and people have already begun the inevitable comparisons between the two. Therefore, he now has to show that he is a different person with a lot of ideas to help FIFA and make it reach the point that it should be at. With all the experience that he had, it will be very exciting to see how everything plays out.

Leonardo DiCaprio And the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role goes to... No stranger to the big screen, Leonardo DiCaprio has starred in some of the greatest films of our generation, “Romeo & Juliet”, “Titanic”, and “The Great Gatsby”. His most recent performance in the movie, “The Revenant”, landed him the long- awaited Oscar Award for best performance by an actor in a leading role. Among some of the biggest names in cinema, at the 88th Annual Academy Awards, DiCaprio sat on the edge of his seat, along with millions of fans to find out if his 5th nomination for an Oscar would merely be that, another nomination. In the movie, The Revenant, DiCaprio portrays Hugh Glass, a 19th-century American frontiersman who is left for dead by his comrades after being mauled by a bear during a winter expedition. Head to head with Matt Damon (The Martian), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), and Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), DiCaprio’s name was called out as he took home is first ever Oscar award. DiCaprio took the stage, where he commenced a memorable and heartwarming speech, overwhelmed with joy, it brought many to tears, following with an uproar of applause and cheering. “Making The Revenant was about man’s relationship with the natural world, a world that we collectively felt in 2015 was the hottest year in recorded history. Our production team needed to go to the southern tip of this planet just to be able to find snow; climate change is real, and it’s happening right now. It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species and we need to work together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity; and for the indigenous people of the world; for the billions and billions of underprivileged people who will be most affected by this; for our children’s children; and for all the people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed. Let us not take this planet for granted; I do not take tonight for granted.” – Leonardo DiCaprio

Competition Winner FALKEN Tire Change

Last month, STUDENTALK and FALKEN Tires hosted a tire changing competition at AUM. Out of the 11 participating teams, we choose the fastest male and female teams to compete online for the title. HERE ARE THE WINNERS! When it comes to changing tires, many out there don’t give girls enough credit. Rona, Nadine, and Yasmeen had the pleasure of proving those people wrong. Not only did they score the fastest time between the five female teams, they also changed the tire faster and safer than five of the six male teams. These girls managed to change the tire at around

two minutes and a half. We congratulate them on their victory and showing the world that anyone can accomplish anything they set their minds to. Thank you to FALKEN Tires for giving the students the opportunity to learn how to change a tire, and sharing important information regarding road safety with them.

The Winner of March 2016 FALKEN Competition:

Rona Nadine Yasmeen
