My colleague came to my office the other day and asked me to write my next letter from the editor about “freedom of choice” When I asked her why, she said “they want to take away our freedom to choose” I said “who? How can they? Ever!!?” She said: “In their pursuit of utopia, where everyone is virtuous, they want to enforce that which we did not choose!” I said: “But that defies the Divine!! If our Creator wanted us to live in utopia, would He not made it so!?” She looked at me in silence, so I continued asking “Do you not know what differentiate humans from other beings?” “What?” she wondered “Our freedom of choice!! If our Creator wanted us all equal in our virtue, would He not have created us as such!? If our Creator wanted us living in utopia, why would He have created hell!? If our Creator wanted us to simply follow rules and not question, would He not have made us all angels!? But we have been created humans! And the only real differentiation between us and other beings is the fact that we can choose, so how can anyone deny you that choice!!?” Listening to all this, she paused..then regaining her thoughts, she said:”others have denied their women the choice. Others have covered them, even covered their eyes..while degrading them.. denying them education..raping them!” Smiling with knowing sadness: “So is the way of men..but pray do tell..when did the cover stop people from making their choices?! You see the good, the bad and the ugly in every society, in every country, in every religion and every sect. Cover or not covered. It is all about the choices we make. And we will always have the freedom to choose, that is what our Creator granted us when he made us human, and that, my dear colleague, is what no other human being will ever be able to take away from us.” So my students, I have decided, I shall not talk to you about the freedom of choice, it would be a waste of both our times, for we all know, you will always be..FREE TO CHOOSE, May you always chose growth, advancement, and furthering your knowledge. Just remember, if our Creator wanted, He would have created us all from one religion, one sect. but He created us different. 7 billion of us, and still not two are the same. So we may meet. So we may interact. So we may learn. So we may evolve. Cover or no cover, Deeds will always be judged based on intentions. May you always have the BEST of intentions, Till next issue,

When did you start playing drums? Actually, I started playing when I was 15 years old. Who discovered your talent? How did it evolve? Nobody discovered me. I discovered myself . When was your first concert/ official appearance? My first concert was in GUST University, in the middle of fall course in 2008. How many appearances have you done? I have done two appearances. Who and what inspired you as a drummer? Mike Portony and Danny Carey are my leaders, and they inspired me throughout my childhood. And the thing that inspired me in drums was the fast movements and the sound of every beat I heard . Where do you see Kuwait in this field? I think Kuwait country is very poor and weak in this type of playing music. And I am very glad that I have who supports me in GUST university, she is my music teacher, Ms. Abla Kamel. 20 - 21
What was the biggest challenge you faced as an Arab drummer? My biggest challenge was and still is that many Arab people don’t take the drums as a good music instrument to play because it doesn’t match the Arabic music. But I am trying so hard to convince people that it does match all types of music. What are you doing nowadays? Still playing electronic drums at my home, and studying of course. Where do you plan to reach with your drums? I plan to reach the best top ten drummers in the world, with God’s help. Today when you look back is there anything you want to change? No, because I am so happy with what I have reached in the previous three years. What are the top 5 musical pieces that incorporate drums, in your opinion, and by who? In my opinion bass drum, share, crash cymbal, small/large tom, and the hats are the 5 pieces incorporate drums. What would you like to say to STUDENTALK readers? I’d like to say thanks to STUDENTALK magazine, because it’s always trying to help students in Kuwait, and we have to appreciate their work with us. Name: Helena Georges El Neaman Age: 23 Talent: Creative Drawing When did you start? As a very young child; before I could walk! Who gave you support? My Mother is like my own personal cheerleader sometimes. She has been encouraging me from day one and still is. Her office walls and filing cabinets are covered in my art. Who could ask for a more supportive mom? How did your talent evolve? Being a university student has given my hobby a great chance for improvement. Being around a number of creative people and artists has really influenced me in a number of ways that I don’t even know where to begin if I were to describe it. Were there any obstacles? The biggest obstacle I’ve faced as an artist is that art is consistently being misjudged or judged according to one’s personal taste. It’s sad how so many people think of art as any random piece of drawing splashed with any random chosen colour; and that anything can be considered art. But they are wrong… There is a very noticeable difference between a beautiful drawing on a page and a page of a beautiful drawing
Who is your muse? My Dad. The artistic blood in me came from his side of the family. I never met anyone who loved to draw and paint more than my father. Today when you look back is there anything you want to change? Nothing at all, I look at the past as one big journey to where I want to be, I have big dreams of becoming a leading animator and director in Walt Disney Studios. Any last words to the readers? I believe that ‘Talent’ is just another word for something you love doing, And I love to draw!

Didn’t want to wait, I wanted to learn all the songs I knew too soon. Who is your muse? Yngwie J. Malmsteen, my main idol, amazingly inspiring! Also I’d like to mention a few other musicians including Guthrie Govan, John Petrucci, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, Jason Becker and Marty Friedman. Today when you look back is there anything you want to change? The fact that I spent three years playing only Heavy Metal and Death Metal music, it took me a while to discover that I’m more into Jazz and Blues, possibly Instrumental Rock too.
How did your talent evolve? By practicing, that made me perfect. I used to do around eight hours a day, non-stop exercises, tried all the different techniques and done my best to master them, also I’ve learned quite a bit about music theory. Were there any obstacles? Any last words to the readers? Well, obstacles weren’t that important actually, Well, if there’s anything you want to do, it doesn’t it was just patience maybe? I had patience issues. matter what others think, do it without regret.

Global Investment House What is the CPI? The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services, including housing, electricity, food, and transportation. CPI assesses changes in the cost of living by measuring changes consumer pay for a set of items. The CPI serves as the headline figure for inflation. Simply put, inflation reflects a decline in the purchasing power of the currency. The CPI is the most widely used measure of inflation and is sometimes viewed as an indicator of the effectiveness of government economic policy. It is also used to adjust consumers’ income payments (for example, Social Security) to adjust income eligibility levels for government assistance and to automatically provide cost-of-living wage adjustments to millions workers. For example, if you or your family spends a larger-than-average share of your budget on medical expenses, and medical care costs are increasing more rapidly than the cost of other items in the CPI market basket, your personal rate of inflation may exceed the increase in the CPI. Conversely, if you heat your home with solar energy, and fuel prices are rising more rapidly than other items, you may experience less inflation than the 40 - 41
general population does. In sum, price changes are weighted by the importance of the item in the spending patterns of the appropriate population group. The combination of all these factors gives a weighted measurement of price change for all items in all outlets, in all areas priced for the CPI. The CPI figures are closely followed by the Central Banks. Rising Consumer Prices may prompt the Central Banks to raise interest rates in order to manage inflation and slow economic growth. Higher interest rates make holding the currency more attractive to foreign investors, and this higher level of demand will place upward pressure on the value of the currency. The CPI is also reported excluding food and energy (Core CPI); two of its most volatile components. These components are particularly sensitive to temporary economic factors like oil prices, natural disasters and seasonal affects. Consequently, CPI excluding Food and Energy provides a more stable figure, but at the cost of overlooking two significant sectors in the economy (together food and energy comprise nearly a quarter of the goods included in the CPI).

Asthma When people talk about asthma, they are really talking about a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that causes periodic “attacks” of coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. What are the symptoms of asthma? • Wheezing or noisy breathing • Coughing • A tight feeling in the chest • Shortness of breath Symptoms can happen each day, each week, or less often. Symptoms can range from mild to severe. Although it is rare, an episode of asthma can sometimes even lead to death. Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and have you do a breathing test to see how your lungs are working. Tests may include the following: • Pulmonary function test: A lung test to measure your breathing capacity and how well you breathe that is done in pulmonary lab. • Peak Expiratory Flow (PEF): Using a device called a peak flow meter; you forcefully exhale into the tube to measure the force of air you can expend out of your lungs. Peak flow monitoring can allow you to monitor your asthma at home. • Chest X-Ray: Your doctor may do a chest X-Ray to determine if other conditions of the lungs, heart or chest are present. How is asthma treated? Asthma is treated with different types of medicines. The medicines can be inhalers, liquids, or pills. Your doctor will prescribe medicine based on how often you have symptoms and how serious your symptoms are. Asthma medicines work in one of two ways: A) Quick-relief medicines stop symptoms quickly — in 5 to 15 minutes. Almost everyone with asthma has a quickrelief inhaler that they carry with them. People use these medicines whenever they have asthma symptoms. Most people need these medicines 1 or 2 times a week—or less often. But when asthma symptoms get worse, more doses may be needed. Some people can feel shaky after taking these medicines. B) Long-term controller medicines control asthma and prevent future symptoms. It is very important that you take all the medicines the doctor prescribes, exactly how you are supposed to take them. You might have to take medicines a few times a day. If so, you and your doctor will work together to make one. As part of your action plan, you may need to use something called a “peak flow meter.” Breathing into this device will show how your lungs are working. Your doctor will show you the right way to use your inhaler and peak flow meter. Should I see a doctor or nurse? Call for an ambulance if you have a severe asthma attack and your symptoms: • Get worse • Do not improve after using a quick-relief medicine • If you need asthma medicine every day, you should see your doctor every 6 months or more often
Can asthma symptoms be prevented? You can help prevent your asthma symptoms. You can stay away from things that cause your symptoms or make them worse. Doctors call these “triggers.” If you know what your triggers are, avoid them as much as possible. Some common triggers include: • Dust • Animals, such as dogs and cats • Pollen and plants • Cigarette smoke • Getting sick with a cold or flu (that’s why it’s important to get a flu shot) • Exercise • Stress
If you can’t avoid certain triggers, talk with your doctor about what you can do. For example, exercise can be good for people with asthma. But you may need to take an extra dose of your quick-relief inhaler medicine before you exercise. ST: What does the name Vicomte A. represent? Arthur: Vicomte is a title in French aristocracy- a small yet rare title to hold. I have been fortunate enough to have this name, and my full name is Vicomte Arthur De Soultrait, so the brand has been taken as a shortened version of my title of Vicomte Arthur. Consequently, the crown above the brand name is also representative of the crown of a Vicomte. ST: We hear you fell into the fashion industry quite by chance. Could you please tell us this story? Arthur: Growing up, my family would breed horses in Burgundy. I have always had a taste for clothing that symbolizes that of my childhood, one that paralleled around horse riding and breeding. When I went for my studies, I majored in Business, and never studied fashion. However, with time, I set up a great team inclusive of my designer William, which has pushed me even further in my career of

ST: Vicomte A. has many franchises in Europe and North America; why have you now chosen Kuwait as your new destination? Arthur: I have always wanted to cater to places in the Middle East, as I find that people here often travel abroad to find clothes like mine. Many Middle Easterners, even Kuwaitis, are found buying my clothes from outside. I decided that opening this clothing brand in Kuwait will be beneficial for us, as well as the buyers. Thanks to Turkish Airlines, the official partner of Manchester United, GUST was honored to welcome former Manchester United Striker Andrew Cole, known to his fans as Andy Cole for an autograph opportunity for the GUST students and employees. Turkish Airlines prides itself as being “The Wings of Champions – Uniting Fans Globally,” and that they have! The students were ecstatic. They waited for Cole to arrive and were queued in line with their memorabilia eagerly waiting for them to be signed including of course their Manchester United jerseys! Red Bull Street Style in Kuwait Winner Plays in the World Final in Italy Red Bull Street Style is the world’s most important freestyle soccer tournament. AUK Campus Services receives Award on Energy Conservation For the fourth consecutive year, the American University of Kuwait (AUK) receives the Ministry of Electricity and Water (MEW) Award for Energy Conservation. AUK has been receiving MEW awards since 2008 on their collaborative efforts with the ministry on energy conservation. The MEW relationship with AUK started when a team of ministry representatives visited the AUK campus in 2007 to inspect and provide advice on their energy conservation campaign. The Story of Earth Hour in Kuwait In 2008, a group of engineering students at Kuwait University aspired to spread awareness about the global warming phenomenon and to take action on climate change. Living in an oil-producing country is a great economic privilege; however, it raises important concerns about the amounts of carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore, the Kuwaiti Team for Global Warming was established to motivate people of Kuwait to embrace environmental change in order to balance the effects of oil production. The journey started in Kuwait University, where the first Earth Hour event took place and was organized in 2008 targeting university students mainly and staff members. It didn’t take time before people started participating in the event and showed great interests in cooperating in the following years. In 2009, the significance of reducing electricity consumption for only an hour was explained by team members to authorized individuals of the main landmarks of Kuwait like Kuwait Towers, Liberation Tower and The Scientific Center as well as over twenty-six malls. The team properly introduced the idea of Earth Hour to the public by organizing an eventful gathering in a public areas, and by inviting people at home, through media and press, to switch off their non-essential lights and electrical devices from 8:30 to 9:30 pm. Several non-profit organizations and societies participated in the event to educate people about other environmental aspects and the importance of volunteer work.
As a result, the percentage of electricity consumption during that hour was reduced. Moreover, the number of participants increased each year showing their loyalty to the cause. Additionally, the team contributes towards educating the youth about Global Warming phenomenon and climate change by giving lectures and seminars at schools and universities. The Kuwaiti Team for Global Warming has also inspired organizations to adopt the idea of Earth Hour and has supported its application in the State of Kuwait during Environmental Day, which took place on February 27th 2012, naming it the Environmental Hour. Carles Puyol Viswanathan Anand has been described as the most versatile chess world champion ever, since Anand is the only player to have won the world chess championships in many formats including Tournament, Match, Rapid, and Knockout chess. Back in 1983, Viswanathan Anand had already attracted attention at the age of fourteen, when he won the National Sub Junior Chess Championship with a score of 9/9. At the age of fifteen, Anand was the youngest Indian who won the International Master’s title. He also won the title National Champion two times before earning his nick name ‘Lightning Kid’. They were not all winning games, in 1991, he lost to Anatoly Karpov in the quarter finals of the FID World Chess Championship, but that didn’t slow him down. Anand has continued with his success and became the world number one for the first time in April 2007, He was at the top of the world rankings five out of six times. Anand will compete with Boris Gelfand the champion of Israel and the winner of the Candidates tournament, to earn the title of World Chess Champion 2012. The match will take place on 10-31.
