Many veterans live daily with injuries and illnesses suffered during their service to our country. Many disabilities can take years to be noticed and diagnosed. These disabilities can become pronounced and limiting. Physical and emotional scars can go untreated because veterans may have difficulty navigating the sometimes complex application process of the Department of Veterans Affairs. For other veterans, they need more day-to-day assistance such as a ride to a medical appointment or benefits claims assistance. The programs of DAV are in place to assist in these everyday life needs.

Many of the veterans who need our services fought in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. So far, 1.4 million service members have served in those wars and nearly 60,000 have been wounded or injured. Many are unaware of their benefits or even their eligibility to receive earned compensation and benefits.

News Dinner Rides The Thursday Night Dinner Rides begin May 1st. Our first ride goes to the Firehouse Brewing Company. Have you given any thought to participating? Are you prepared for the group riding experience? Many of us have already had our bikes out for a ride this spring. Did you inspect your bike before taking off? It is especially important to do a pre-ride inspection this time of year. Remember the acronym “T-CLOCK” for your inspection. You should inspect your bike every time before you ride.

T – Tires and Wheels C – Controls L – Lights O – Oil C – Chassis K – Kickstand Now that your bike is ready to go, are you ready for a group ride? Make sure you

are mentally and physically prepared before any ride. If you are feeling ill it would be wise to save your riding for another day. Always remember the following in a group riding setting.

Ride at a constant speed to eliminate the “rubber band” effect.

Group riding requires a high level of awareness and concentration.

Riding side by side is dangerous and illegal. Only pull up beside a bike when stopping at an intersection.

Know your limits and always ride within your abilities.

Never come up on the bike in front of you or beside you.

Come prepared: Full tank of gas, empty bladder, and appropriate riding gear.

If your group misses a turn, stick together and the leader will get you back on track.

Arrive at the starting location early so you can hear the pre-ride instructions. Ride in staggered formation, two (2) seconds to the bike directly ahead of you and four (4) seconds to the bike in front of that. Watch a few bikes further up the road and do not become

Four H's Build Project will kick off Sunday, May 18 at Black Hills Harley-Davidson starting at 10am. Join us as we begin building a Habitat for Humanity House in our parking lot. Construction will take place all week culminating with the house being moved to its permanent

parking lot at the dealership. Please arrive as early as possible to assist us in departing on time. The Road Captain and first line of bikes will depart at 6:00 PM sharp. The sweeper on the last line will be calling the food order in. If you are running a few minutes late, please ride safely to the dealership and we should still be able to get your order in. I think we are ready to ride!! We look forward to seeing you each week at the dinner ride. Remember that we never cancel a dinner ride. Four wheel vehicles are perfectly acceptable in poor weather. We can f i n a l l y discuss motorcycle riding since we are now into May and June is just around the corner, thank God! If you are wondering why this newsletter looks little short in length, it’s because as I write this newsletter I am helping my wife get her bike ready for the bike show. (God love her…) Okay, just settle down we all know that my wife is doing all the work and I am like a government worker doing a great job of supervising. I am sure all the women are saying, “What else is new,” but like most men I have a problem with multi-tasking. I will start my developmental training in that area to hopefully solve that problem soon. Progress reports to follow….. As you may know May has been designated as Safety Awareness Month and is the time we focus on safety. With that we have the Motorcycle Awareness Ride that will be held on May 17th. This citywide ride will start at Power Sports leaving at 10:00 a.m. and will end at Black Hills Harley Davidson after the ride for pizza and pop. Be sure to participate in this ride. There will be a sign-up sheet at the dealership for volunteers that are needed to help park bikes at Power Sports before the ride begins. They need to be there at 8:00 that morning. Thanks in advance for all of the help you can give this important city-wide ride.

A thought for riding safe: the key to riding safely after a long

break, whether it be a couple of weeks or getting going after a long winter, is to take it easy the first couple of times you are back on your motorcycle. Just remember you are the key to preventing a motorcycle accident and personal injury to yourself and/or your passenger.

Another H.O.G. event is the annual Neck Yoke Road cleanup. This is planned for Saturday, May 10th. We will meet at the coffee shop on top of Hwy 16 at 8:00 a.m. for breakfast. Our cleanup duties should only take an hour or so to complete. Come join us for breakfast and a little harassment. If you can come there might be a slim possibility that I will perform my traditional spring snake dance (it depends on how many dollar bills I collect) and believe me you don’t want to miss the performance. I have passed on this talent to Lindsey, so ask her about it when you’re in the store next time. Another thing that comes with May is the marking of our calendars for upcoming riding events. The first one is the annual Motorcycle/Golf Tournament. My thanks to Dan and Dennis for their effort in putting this together. This event has been scheduled for September 6th and will be held at the Southern Hills Golf Course in Hot Springs. The cost will be $42 for golf and a cart. Rooms are available at the Holiday Inn Express for $94.99 per room. There will be a sign-up sheet starting in June at the front desk at the dealership. As always the ride will be warm and delightful… yeah, right! We are doing a local golf course so you people

who don’t want to ride when it is cold and raining can join us for a cold, rainy golf outing. The next ride to mark down is the Downtown Lion’s Club poker run on June 7th. This ride will start at the dealership with registration from 10:00 to 11:00 am and the ride will be a Southern Hills route. There will be prizes and a silent auction with the proceeds going to support the Lion’s Club organization. Last, but not least, is the Overnight Ride and a Weekend Ride that Wayne Lewis is putting together. These will take us to parts of Wyoming unknown to many, but well known to Wayne and Arliss, and of course, my bride. Maybe we can get Kelly to show us some of her favorite watering holes and stomping grounds! Just keep a lookout for information and times for these rides. Now, please put this newsletter down, go outside, get on the motorcycle, and go for a ride. Just remember to keep your mouth shut so you won’t have bugs in your teeth, even though they are a good source of protein… (if that’s the case, pack a toothbrush and maybe some mouthwash).

Well, May is upon us and spring is springing all around. Your service department would like to offer a few reminders for the new riding season. If your bike has a low batter y when you first get it out, please call your ser vice pros before replacing it or thinking it’s a bad batter y. Harley’s new AGM batteries are extremely long lasting batteries, but they do require dif ferent charging methods than our old lead acid batteries. We have encountered many AGM batteries that require 72

hours of charging to come up to full charge. Below, we have a 10-point checklist for getting your bike ready to ride. This is also a good checklist to use all year long as a pre ride check. Tire pressure, tire pressure, tire pressure. We can’t stress enough the importance of checking your tire pressure bi-monthly. Tires can loose as much as 10% pressure per month. Handling and tire life is highly affected by tire pressure. Please refer to your owner’s manual for proper tire inflation. The

pressure stated on the side of the tire is for max load only. Feel free to stop by and our ser vice pros will be happy to check and set your tire pressures at no charge. An often-overlooked thing is to check your license plate expiration tag. (The voice of experience speaking) enough said. Now for the ride, most of the roads in the Black Hills have not yet been cleaned of winter road mix so please be extremely cautious of all back roads and cur ves. Also, as we know, deer prefer the new little green

shoots of grass alongside the roadways over all the grass in any meadow in the hills. We are starting to get pretty busy in the ser vice department this time of year, so please call ahead for any ser vice needs or concerns so that we can offer you the outstanding customer ser vice you deser ve.

We have quite a few happenings at BHHD this month. On the 17th, we will host the annual Awareness Ride. That’s always an excellent way to kick of f the riding season, and when the ride is over, we’ll be of fering 20% of f all Dyna and V-ROD accessories, so be sure to mark that on your calendar and get ready to do some serious accessorizing! As always, should you need any assistance, or just want to bounce some ideas around, you can sure depend on us! It’s what we do.
