Making H.O.G. Memories Last by Dave Davis, Black Hills H.O.G. Chapter Historian What are your earliest memories as a H.O.G. member? Was it attending your first meeting and being called upon to introduce yourself and tell everyone about your bike? Was it the apprehension of your first ride with the group or looking across the room at that H.O.G. member whose vest was adorned with more pins and patches than you could possibly collect in a lifetime? For me it was all of these and then some. To be a chapter historian, it’s been said that you have to be around long enough to have a saddle bag full of road stories and yet be young enough to remember them. Before time catches up with me, let me share one of my favorites with you. Attending one of my first meetings as a H.O.G. member at the old location on Omaha Street I found myself in a situation more embarrassing than you can imagine. Our meetings in those days were held in the east end of the showroom with seating available for the members on stacking chairs. You know the white plastic arm chairs you find on many patios? Well I was sitting in the back row and had slid my chair back so I’d have a little more leg room. Finding myself in this relaxing position it was only natural to lean back in the chair. In hindsight it’s now obvious that I leaned back a bit too far. Before I knew what was happening the back legs of that plastic chair buckled and spit me out like a toddler’s first taste of spinach. Faster than a V-Rod can go through the gears I was up off the floor and back in the chair, hoping that no one noticed my untimely dismount. Knowing that I brought this calamity upon myself by leaning backwards, I was very careful to sit upright and make no unnecessary movements. I remember it like it was yesterday, Road Captain Peter Pi was describing our next ride when it happened again. That’s right, this innocent looking piece of furniture had launched me again as if from an ejec2
tion seat in a fighter jet. This time there was no hiding my predicament, in fact the entire membership was giving me a round of applause. To add insult to injury, General Manager Terry Rymer arrived on the scene with a metal bar stool that resided behind the counter just outside of Bill’s office. He then announced to everyone that the plastic chairs weren’t weight rated for members like me so he had heavyduty chairs available just in case. The laughter was deafening and my cheeks were beet red. It was an unplanned moment of H.O.G. humor and all at my expense. So if you are a new member and worried about feeling uncomfortable, I can assure you that you will have to work pretty hard to compete with my first chapter meeting. This was just the first of the countless laughs that H.O.G. has brought my way. I invite you to become active in our chapter and create your own laughs and memories.
Send in Your Stories As you can see, not all “road stories” take place while riding. One thing is for sure, no matter where or when you put a bunch of H.O.G. members together there will be tales, and most of them will bring a smile to your face. I’d like to hear your stories and share them with the current membership while we build a historical archive for future generations of H.O.G. members. Send your memories of the Black Hills Chapter to agentman54@yahoo.com or give me a call at 431-2300. On a final historical note, how would you like an excuse to go for an early spring ride to Sturgis? There is a great collection of motorcycles and motorcycle memorabilia right in our back yard. Visit the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and experience history at the same time. If you haven’t been to the museum lately you will be surprised by the extent of the exhibits and your admission will help to preserve these memories for generations to come.

Lets Talk Dyno Tune! by Kevin Jeager Many people think the only reason to dyno tune your bike is to get peak horsepower and torque out of it. However, the main reason is to make a bike easier and more enjoyable to ride. We have all ridden or been around bikes that are not at their peak running capability. Whether they hiccup and die, backfire or hiss, a bike that has not been dyno tuned is most likely not running up to its full potential. The results you get might only be a couple horse and torque more than before, but the way the bike runs will be so much smoother that you

will not care if it is a one-horse or 10-horse gain. Dyno tuning your bike will likely get you better gas mileage and in most cases it will also run cooler. In order to dyno tune a fuelinjected bike it must be with a tuner like a Screaming Eagle Pro Super Tuner. We also have the capability to tune Power Commanders. We are always willing to show you some dyno graphs that are prime examples of the results you might see in your own bike. If you are interested, call the service department to get a dyno tune scheduled soon. Summer is fast approaching and we are getting busy!

Roadside Assistance Program Helps Stranded Riders by Ahrlin Engel, Safety Officer June is here and we have been going on our Thursday night dinner rides for about four weeks now. We are now ready for some longer rides. Maybe it's a trip to Devils Tower, the Badlands or, for a lot of us, to Watertown for the South Dakota H.O.G. Rally. We all know that our bikes need to be checked over for the normal maintanence before heading out on the road. Unfortunatley, unexpected things can happen down the road—you could have a flat tire, run out of gas or have a battery fail you, in the middle of nowhere. As a H.O.G. member you need not worry. Stay calm and make sure all members of your group are off the road safely. As a H.O.G. member, you have a 24-hour roadside assistance program available for your use. Simply call Road America's toll-free number: (888) 443-5896. This number is also imprinted on the back of your National H.O.G. membership card. Road America can assist you with towing service to an authorized Harley-Davidson dealer, fuel/fluid replacement (does not cover cost of fuel/fluid) and extrication assistance. When calling always make sure you have your membership number and the nearest mileage marker number for them to locate you and your bike. Nobody wants to have to use this service, but with a little bit of planning your trip will be alot safer. Safe riding.
Black Hills Harley-Davidson Salesman of the Month Who’s Who: Position: Location: Years at Store:
Paul Mitchell Motorcycle Sales Black Hills Harley-Davidson Five years with an additional two at our old location
Paul bought his first bike, a moped, when he was 14 years old. He’s been riding one thing or another since then, 47 years to be exact … you do the math. One of Paul’s favorite things about working in the motorcycle industry, and specifically at Black Hills Harley-Davidson, is the diversity of the customers. He has customers in 38 states
and three Canadian provinces. His goal is to hit all 50 states and I would say he is well on his way to accomplishing that goal! Another thing he likes about working here, besides the fact that it’s a great job, is the family atmosphere at Black Hills Harley-Davidson. Everyone looks out for each other and focuses their attention on making the customer’s experience a pleasant one. A funky fact about Paul: He taught english and history to high school and college students. Paul has also authored two books and has written more than 100 national magazine articles in various publications. He has a third book in the works that he hopes to have in publication in the near future. 11
