Watertown, SD - June 11-13, 2009 Rally Coordinator - Jim Wollan | Site Coordinator - Art Barse Registration Coordinator - Jenna Kannas | Events Coordinator - Doug Ries Secretar y - John Rohlf | Treasurer - Mike McGrath | Volunteer Coordinator - Chris Owen

The 2009 South Dakota State H.O.G. Rally is fast approaching. Make sure you have the dates, June 11-13, blocked out. We are working on exciting possibilities for this year’s Rally; things you may not have seen before at a State Rally. We plan to make it a Rally that you won’t forget! We realize that these are tough economic times for many. We are working hard to make this year’s Rally experience a great value. You’ll note right from the registration process that we have created registration options. So, if you choose, you can keep your costs lower than they have been before. And, talk about a deal! Be sure to take advantage of the ver y special guided day-ride to Historic Fort Sisseton and the area north of Watertown. Riding doesn’t get much better anywhere! Free entr y into the Fort and free food will all be included on this ride. Wow! Register early to get in on this one! You will also have a chance at special prizes just for pre-registering. In fact, the earlier you pre-register, the more chances to win! And, if you volunteer to work you’ll be eligible to win a special prize just for the volunteers. The more times you volunteer, the more chances to win! Of course, there will be numerous ride options, both guided and self-guided routes. Choose the direction, time, and distance that you want to go and then pick the ride that fits. But, if you want to get them all in, you’ll have to come back another time.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THINGS TO LOOK FORWARD TO INCLUDE: THURSDAY - early bird registration, self-guided rides, scavenger hunt FRIDAY - the feature guided ride to Fort Sisseton, evening Dealer party, games FRIDAY AND SATURDAY - guided and self-guided rides, poker run, scavenger hunts SATURDAY - Redlin Center reception, parade, banquet, entertainment, bike blessing

And above all, from start to finish, is socializing with good friends, some you’ve met and some you have yet to meet. Don’t be left out! The Rally Web site is active and will be updated regularly. If you haven’t visited it yet, check it out at www.sdstatehogrally.com. Registration will be opening very soon!

properly aligned. Throw H.O.G. in there, all we do, the fun we have, our support for each other, big and small, and you realize you’re not going it alone. Does it get any better than that? H.O.G…it is important and we do matter.

H.O.G., what does it mean and is it important? As for what it means, I guess that’s for each of us to decide. Is it belonging to a group that shares a common passion, the Harley-Davidson motorcycle? Is it the riding? Riding safely? Having fun? How about our acceptance of each other and our individuality? My guess, and for me, it’s all of this…and more. It’s family. No matter where you go, what you do, or who you talk to, when you see the H.O.G. logo you know you’re with friends. You sit up and take notice, chances are you smile because a memor y comes flooding back and you recognize you’re among friends. You know there’s someone out there that understands. H.O.G., is it important? It’s pretty easy to get caught up in the doom and gloom reported on the news, or reading the losses on our IRA or 401(k) statements, or listening to our boss’ share the woes of the business world and delivering the news that there won’t be raises this year, but when you throw a leg over and settle into the saddle and ride out to nowhere in particular, all this becomes less significant and not so over whelming. You remember the sound and feel of freedom, you feel the breeze on your face, the flutter of your shirt in the wind, the smells of freshly mown grass or newly fallen rain, and your priorities all seem to fall right in line. We still need to deal with the cares of our families, our countr y, and the world, but it’s sure a lot easier to do with a clear mind and our priorities

So what’s going on? Well, we’re just days away from the 21st annual Black Hills Motorcycle Show and we need YOU. We need you, your bike, your creative talents and your registration form. If you’ve completed it and sent it in, thanks! and we look for ward to your display and hopefully ushering you across the stage for some recognition. If not, there’s still time and we’d love to see you there. Remember, it’s not about whether your bike wins or not, it’s about pride of ownership, sharing your iron artwork with others, telling the stor y about you and your bike and what it all means to you. It’s a great time and a great way to support local and regional motorcycle enthusiasts. It’s not just a Harley show so encourage your metric buddies to come and check us out, enter their bikes and join the fun. Chairman Loren will be looking for a few, but ver y talented, volunteers to help with some of the finer details. He’s got a lot going on and I’m sure he’d appreciate you letting him know you can help out and what you’d like to do. If you don’t, he’ll be tapping you on the shoulder. Help out if you can. It’s a great time!

“...when you see the H.O.G. logo you know you’re with friends” to be a rally you won’t want to miss. Spring riding is just around the corner and, if you’re like me, spring fever is beginning to take hold. We’ll be tempted with warmer weather and sunny days but please remember that these are still winter riding conditions. Watch out for icy spots, sand and gravel, and falling temperatures. If you’re out, be safe. See you around the chapter and of course, shiny side up! Matt

Don’t forget the upcoming 4-wheel dinner rides. March 26th we’ll be meeting at Casa Real, and April 23rd will be traveling to the Fireside Inn. Meet your fellow H.O.G.ers at 6 pm at the restaurant and look for ward to great conversations and maybe even a game or two. No doubt a good time will be had by all. Be checking www.sdstatehogrally. com for the opening of registration for the 2009 State HOG Rally in Watertown. I was fortunate to see a sneak preview of a video added to this website showcasing this years State Rally and outlining some of the spectacular events they have planned. It’s going

Parts News

It’s March, and that means Spring is almost here. Can you believe it? Another winter has come and almost gone. Warm, sunny days are on their way and we’re all gearing up for a great season. The Black Hills Harley-Davidson staff is ready and waiting to get our bikes back out on the road, too. It’s definitely time to think about getting out the cleaning supplies, knocking off the dust, and putting a shine on the ride in preparation for, well... riding! Since you are probably bringing your ride out of the garage for the first time in awhile, give it a good once over for safety issues before you hit the road. And while you’re buffing and polishing, be sure to take a long close

look at a few very important items: brake lines, throttle, idle, and clutch cables, tires. Make sure all pedals and levers have full range of motion. For those who are taking each and every chance to get out there and ride, please take care! Sand, gravel, and black ice from winter storms quickly builds up along edges of the road and in corners so stay alert and keep safety first! This month’s words of fuzzy wisdom: If you can’t ride with the big dogs, stay on the porch!

Sturgis Harley-Davidson and Black Hills Harley-Davidson were each awarded a plaque for being a major sponsor. Doug, from Sturgis Harley-Davidson accepted the plaques.
