Sturgis Rally Humor A Cowboy at the Sturgis Rally A cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. “Have you ever done anything of particular merit?” St. Peter asked. “Well, I can think of one thing,” the cowboy offered. “On a trip to the Black Hills out in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn’t listen. So, I approached the largest and most heavily tattooed biker and smacked him in his face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring and threw it on the ground. I yelled, ‘Now back off or I’ll kick the crap out of all of you!’” St. Peter was impressed. “When did this happen?” he asked. The cowboy replied, “Just a couple of minutes ago.” —Taken from Cyril Huze Blog, www.cyrilhuzeblog.com.

H.O.G.

N E W S

Black Hills Harley-Davison Welcomes Home New Director by Matt McCormick “Welcome home” is a greeting from one family to another as they return home from a day at school, work or some other obligation of life. It’s a heartfelt exchange, followed by hugs and kisses, bestowed upon someone returning from a long absence. Yeah, this might be the cusH.O.G. Director tomary use of the phrase “welcome home,” but for me it describes my relationship with HOG You see, I’ve heard this phrase, with the full impact of its meaning, only twice in my life. “Welcome home” was the phrase I heard from my wife Chris when I left my career in the corporate world, complete with all the trappings of self-serving endeavors that are inherent with climbing the corporate ladder, to start my own shop. I wanted to run my show according to my core beliefs, not completely devoid of responsibility to my parent company, allowing my true personality (if I have one, and I know some of you will debate this point) to once again flourish. But, as the journey goes, we trade one set of worldly weights for another and over time we begin to feel the impact of our commitments and obligations and lose focus on the need to enjoy all that life has to offer. Over time, “welcome home” became a distant memory. But as luck would have it, my good friend Mark Gordon introduced me to the Harley-Davidson family, and my good friend and neighbor Ron Colerick introduced me to the HOG. family. The result has been nine years of riding and having fun. It wasn’t too long after purchasing my 2001 Dyna Low Rider and attending my first HOG social (November 2001 Chili Cook-off) that I heard “welcome home” from my wife Chris. Just as we need air to breath, water to drink and food to eat, we equally need a passion that ignites the soul and fuels the spirits so we can appreciate all that is around us. For me, that passion is Harley-Davidsons and the Harley Owners Group. For me, HOG is a relevant part of my life that allows me to serve and contribute to the good of our organization. But I have to be honest, I feel as though I’ve taken more than I’ve given. For without HOG, “welcome home” would again just be a memory and I’d be marching through the drudgery of life. With HOG, I have more than one million fellow riders making sure I never again lose focus of what’s important. Yes, we have life obligations like raising families, supporting our spouses and working to the fullest of our abilities, but nowhere in that rule book does it say we’re not to have fun along the way. Why take ourselves so seriously that we forget to crack the throttle, hear the roar, feel the rumble, smell the burning rubber and share a laugh or two? I won’t make that mistake ever again and HOG is there to make sure I hold true to that promise. Many Thanks This is the last of my ramblings as your chapter director. I’ve enjoyed writing the monthly newsletters and I

Matt McCormick

hope they’ve caused you to stop and reflect about our chapter and all that we are. We have an outstanding chapter, in my opinion the Ultra Classic of the entire organization. It doesn’t begin and end with one person but rather is the result of the combined efforts of a lot of people committing their time, talents and energy to living the HOG motto of “riding and having fun.” So, before I pass the handlebars I want to express my appreciation to a few. I run the risk of inadvertently omitting a name or two and if that happens I extend my apologies now. There is however, a group that is so noteworthy that this risk is worth taking. Board of Directors I started the first newsletter by introducing the 2009 Primary Officers and Board of Directors. I cannot provide enough kudos to Assistant Director Loren Stanley, Treasurer Alex Kulesza and Secretary Neal Schlottman. As primary officers these guys have provided support and interest in our chapter to an extent they may never realize. Each is an individual of talent and possesses a commitment to something bigger than their individual interests. They are a great team to work with and I look forward to watching them proceed through the primary officer chairs. Thanks guys, you made it a great year! Members at Large Our Members at Large, Cindy Meyers, Nancy and Mike Williams, Bobbi Cramer and Jim Boulter, represent a diverse

group. Serving as hosts for our monthly socials and bringing your thoughts and ideas to our board meetings, they have served our chapter well. Their humor, laughter and commitment to creating an open and welcoming environment for all chapter members has been invaluable. Great job, all! Photography and Web Site Luciene and Todd Holen serving as photographer and Web director have rarely missed a 2009 HOG event, kids in tow, and have contributed to recording and communicating our message more than you can believe. Working hand in hand (it’s okay … they’re married to each other) they have photographically recorded chapter happenings and transferred them to our new and improved chapter Web site. No doubt they’ve invested more hours than we know and we’re grateful for their contributions. Safety Officer Rarely does someone come along that feels the passion as deeply as Safety Officer Ahrlin Engel. Receiving more than one of my phone calls looking for assistance, usually under a time crunch, Ahrlin always

came through. Not only did he rise to the task it was typically completed that day and greeted with a “No problem, Matt. I’ll get it done”. And he always has. Thanks, Ahrlin. Road Captain We ride and we have fun. As chapter officers we have to get the riding part right. Road Captain Nick Davis heard that message, internalized it and made it a reality for the 2009 riding season. Developing a multifaceted system that improved communications with our restaurants, simplified and streamlined the process of planning, organizing and leading rides for our Ride Leaders, we may have had the most trouble-free year of riding in recent memory. A great job, Nick! Past Directors Past Directors and Black Hills Area Bikers Reps Marty Beasley and Ron Colerick are not only fellow HOG members, they are friends. Always willing to share their insight and advice they were a source of information and support that I have valued throughout the year. With guys like these, you’re never riding alone. Perfecting the skill of extending a 5-minute, quick conversation oftentimes into more than an hour, Dave Davis, with his local, national and international reach in the world of HOG, was more than willing to mentor and guide a newbie director throughout the year. We shared many interesting, some difficult, and almost all entertaining, conversations throughout the course of the year. Our chapter is fortunate to have someone with his HOG experience and wealth of knowledge in our membership. I was fortunate to have him as a willing resource. Thanks, Dave! Sponsorship Our chapter exists at the pleasure of our sponsoring dealer. With Jim Burgess, Al Rieman, Jim Doyle and Clay Trulson we have a relationship with our sponsor that far and away exceeds any other that I’ve observed in the world of HOG. They’re interested and supportive of our world of riding and having fun. Thanks guys, we appreciate all you do to support our chapter and our community! Clay and Cheryl require a special comment from me. Working closely with them throughout the course of the year has been rewarding and at times more humorous than I could have imagined. The highest compliment I can give them is to say that they are HOG. They help plan and guide our events and chapter happenings, they support ideas that may seem off the wall but might have a chance, and allow us to figure it out as we go along. And they always support the Black Hills Chapter. I assure you there are not more loyal and supportive dealer reps in the world of HOG than Clay and Cheryl. They have supported, guided and mentored me along my path of HOG leadership. And more importantly, they are friends. Thanks, Clay and Cheryl! Welcome to Our New Director So there you have it. I’ve ridden my miles and now turn the handlebars over to 2010 Director Loren Stanley. Our chapter will be in outstanding hands as Loren and his team begins the process of planning and guiding the Black Hills Chapter through the coming year. No doubt there’ll be times when your talents will be needed. Say yes and help create the experience. Welcome home!
