MILWAUKEE December 1, 2008 Inspired by the XR-750, the most dominating American dir t track racing motorcycle of alltime, the Harley-Davidson XR1200 is now poised to boost adrenalin levels on streets, roads and highways around the world.
“The XR1200 is an exciting motorcycle with an aggressive attitude,” said Bill Davidson, HarleyDavidson Vice President, Core Customer Marketing. “This bike will provide the per formance and distinct style demanded by uncompromising riders. In fact, hundreds of XR1200s were ordered by enthusiastic customers before we really even promoted it.”
The XR1200 is a powerful new Harley-Davidson hot rod motorcycle that was initially designed and launched only in European markets in April 2008. With the high degree of interest and passionate reception surrounding the bike’s European release, as well as demand from Harley riders and competitive brand owners alike, the XR1200 is now being launched in all markets.
The successful dir t track legacy continues today as Harley factor y rider Kenny Coolbeth won his third straight AMA Grand National Twins flat track championship on the XR750 in 2008. While distinctive racing paint and graphics on the XR1200 will catch the eye, HarleyDavidson racing tradition and influence are clearly evident in the bike’s key features, design and style.
Drawing significant styling influences from the successful Harley-Davidson XR-750 motorcycles that set new standards for dir t track racing success over the last 30 years, the XR1200 features technical innovation to provide potent street performance and handling. In fact, Harley-Davidson dir t track racing legends

A spor t-tuned Showa® suspension with inver ted 43 mm front forks and twin preload adjustable shocks combines with lightweight black cast three-spoke wheels to make the XR1200 ride and corner with feeling. Specially designed Dunlop® Qualifier D209 tires connect the rider to the road, while Nissin® fourpiston large disc front brakes provide stopping power. Additional racing influences on the XR1200 include details like dir t track style bodywork, wide black low-rise handlebar, a 29.2-inch seat height and aggressive riding position. Rearset foot pegs provide additional cornering clearance with a 39-degree lean angle. The compact instrument cluster combines a digital speedometer, white-faced tachometer, dual trip meter and clock. Pig Tails 2009 Board of Directors
Director’s Corner
Welcome to 2009 and another year of Riding and Having Fun!
Let’s take a minute to reflect back on 2008 and say a few thank yous. No doubt 2008 was a memorable year including some good, some not so good but overall another successful year of living the H.O.G. motto. Through highs and lows we confirmed that as a chapter we are family, not one of us rides alone. That means something and shouldn’t be forgotten. Not much happens in a vacuum and certainly that’s true around the Black Hills Chapter. Please take a moment to visit with now Past Director Marty Beasley and say thanks for his many contributions to our chapter, not just in 2008 as he lead us through the 25th Anniversary of H.O.G., but through the years he has invested in helping make our chapter stronger, open to all (young and old, new rider or experienced), and certainly a lot of fun. No one can argue that Marty, in his own little world sometimes, never misses being at the heart of a good time. Personally, I offer my thanks to Marty for mentoring me through the responsibilities, challenges and rewards that await me as your 2009 Director. Marty’s experience, insight, humor and perspective allow me to look forward to the coming year with excitement and anticipation. Marty, you’re a great guy and a great leader. Thanks for all your hard work and the lasting legacy you have left with the Black Hills Chapter. (Sidebar: Actually, Marty didn’t retire, he’s off to treatment. These newsletters were particularly hard on his liver). A word of thanks also needs to go out to all the other 2008 board members who have invested their time, talent, sweat and sometimes tears into making last year a great year. Some continue on, others join the loyal ranks of active chapter members, but all continue on with the satisfaction that they have contributed something special that makes our chapter
the best in H.O.G. Thanks you guys. Without your dedication, and leadership by example, we’d just be another ordinary group of riders. We are anything but ordinary! How about a hearty welcome to our 2009 Board of Directors! These courageous souls were introduced at the December social and their names are listed in this newsletter. They are your fellow chapter members who will serve as your eyes, ears and representatives as the 2009 board brainstorms, plans and creates activities and events that will lead to another great year of Harley-Davidson motorcycle riding in the spectacular Black Hills, around the country and dare I say world? Talk with this group of dedicated individuals, share your ideas, answer their questions when they ask, and encourage them throughout the year even when things seem to be grinding. Their responsibilities aren’t always easy, and sometimes the decisions don’t always seem to make sense, but never forget these people work hard to continue the great legacy that is the Black Hills Chapter. We couldn’t continue on without touching on a couple of past events. First the Festival of Lights Parade. If you remember from last year, our maiden voyage, we brought home some hardware… the Community Spirit Award. Was that a shock to anyone? If it was you just don’t know the Black Hills Chapter and the unbridled excitement we pour into everything we do. Although we didn’t repeat this year, all that helped design, construct, decorate, ride the trolley or ride their Harley-Davidson’s in the parade, had a great time and worked hard to contribute to and spread the cheer of Christmas. No doubt the party afterward was a fitting way to add an exclamation point to the kick-off of the Holiday Season. (Thanks Chris!). One of the most important events our chapter helps sponsor each year is the Forgotten Elderly program. Those that shopped

or helped wrap presents for nursing home residents without immediate family understands the humble wishes of these special people. Our chapter’s financial assistance is important to the continuation of this event but even more important is the time our members contribute to making this happen. Because you took time out of your busy life to give to someone in need, there will be some smiles and appreciation from those on the receiving end. A fitting reminder of what the Christmas Season is all about. You are a great group of people! Don’t forget upcoming events. Thursday, January 8th marks the first social of 2009 and will prepare us for the festivities to be featured at the Holiday Party slated for Saturday, January 17th. You’re not going to want to miss either event. I’m telling ya, we’re going to have a great time! Remember a block of rooms has been reserved at the Ramkota so you can have a great time while being safe. If you are brave enough to be out and about on your scooter, please do so safely and remember… Keep the Shiny Side Up! Matt

With Christmas over and done with, it just remains to watch the bills roll in, and tr y to make room for them in the budget. We hope you were blessed with loads of chrome under the tree and per formance par ts in your stocking. If Santa didn’t get your request this year, come on in and we’ll get it taken care of. We do have a lot of nice new accessories to show you. Since you’re making a list of resolutions this time of year anyway, please add safety to your list. With spring just around the corner, and just a little over two months until Daytona, it’s going to be hard not to get the bike out for a quick ride on an occasional tropical day. That’s great, but please be careful. A lot of the main
roads out of town, as well as all the cool roads in the hills (Sheridan Lake Rd., Rimrock, Nemo, etc.) still have quite a few wet and icy patches, and sand and gravel on them, so they can be treacherously hazardous. Please just take it easy, concentrate, and stay vigilant, so you’ll be able to come in one of these cold days, grab a cup of coffee, and discuss what we can do to help you make your ride even better! This month’s fuzzy word of wisdom: illegitimus non carborundum. For a translation, come on in and ask! Live long and ride safe, Murph
