Longweekend reigns supreme This year’s Noosa Longweekend Festival was the biggest and most ambitious to date with 260 local, national and international artists, authors and speakers, 130 free and ticketed events over 10 days, and for the first time in nine years since inception, it stretched from Noosa to Caloundra. Festival highlights included the charismatic Tom Burlinson with Frank a Life in Song; the magnificent International Stars of Ballet with principal dancers from the San Francisco Ballet Company; French chanteuse Caroline Nin; joint winners of Sydney Cabaret Festival Elizabeth Cousemacker and Tom Sharah; a sneak peek of Noosa resident and internationally renowned playwright, David Williamson’s new play Rhinestone Rex and Miss Monica starring Georgie Parker and Glen Hazeldine; legendary Australian musical theatre star Toni Lamond performing her one woman show I’m Still Here; and so many more. It’s the Longweekend’s 10th anniversary as well as the 40th anniversary of David Williamson’s phenomenal success as Australia’s foremost playwright in 2011, so start planning for Friday 17 June to Sunday 26 June. Two reasons to celebrate ten glorious days of colour, creativity and culture. As if you need a reason! Long lunch and fashion fiesta “Let’s do it again” was the consensus from over 400 foodies, fashionistas and funsters who welcomed spring at the Peregian Square Meal & Fashion Fiesta in the Village Green. Staged by the Lions Club of Peregian Beach to raise funds for charity, twelve restaurants including Pitchfork, Wahoo, Sushi Wave and Zacharys served a sumptuous lunch including wine. The fashion parade was co-ordinated and compered by Ann Hills, a former June Dally Watkins and Viviens model. Sharing the catwalk were professional models from 21 to 70 years including two dashing gentlemen who paraded the latest street-wear, beach wear and after-five fashions Evolve, Finders Keepers, Fred & Gingers, Harper Street, High Tide Mark, Hole Sole, Otilly & Lewis, Peregian Fashion Butik; Soul Sanctuary, Style Workroom, and Surf & Street. The president of the Lions Club said the event was a combined effort: “It goes to show that we have a real community spirit in this area. All monies raised will be divided amongst various charities chosen by the Peregian business community and Lions Peregian Beach.”

8. All that Jazz... Noosa Jazz Festival Rocked. People were dancing in the streets as the 2010 Noosa Jazz Festival rocked the town. Restaurants, cafés and and bars joined in with special guest artists to delight their guests, as they enjoyed fine food, fabulous drinks and fantastic entertainment. Devotees of the event were eager to dress 'the part' for the festival adding another element to the fun atmosphere. Inaugural 'Old Bags Lunch' SurfAir on Marcoola beach was bustling with colourful couture accessories recently, as ladies attended the Old Bags Lunch, a fund-raising event for Variety Charity. Guests indulged in an exquisite three-course lunch whilst bidding on designer pieces. 110 new handbags were sold and over 100 'old bags' donated to lifeline. The event was one of many that SurfAir donates resources to each year. Ritzy Swan Song for Nationally Acclaimed Artist a Great Success Tiffany Jones Fine Art Gallery in Buderim was buzzing with laughter and brimming with colour on Sunday 27 June when the “Putting on the Ritz” art exhibition for nationally acclaimed artist Kate Smith was unveiled at a stylish champagne opening. Kate Smith has enjoyed a strong following on the Sunshine Coast, so much so that her striking pastel entitled “Noosa Style” featured as the Noosa Style magazine’s cover in December 2006. After winning hundreds of awards and a long and successful career, The “Putting on the Ritz” exhibition was 63 year old Kate Smith’s final solo exhibition in Australia.

The sun is shining, the birds are singing and flowers are raising their beautiful faces towards the sky. I love Spring! It's not too hot and there's still a welcome cool breeze every so often to tingle our skin. This is also one of the most exciting seasons to visit your favourite restaurants and cafes to see what their clever chefs are creating with the fabulous new season produce available. On the subject of fabulous food have you been watching junior MasterChef on Channel 10? Where do these little gems come from? Surely they are just short adults (with great skin) pretending to be children. No 8-12 year-old children could possibly have the skills these kids are demonstrating. No wonder Gary, George and Anna are looking a little shocked (or should that be stunned?) They may even start doubting their own abilities by the time this

'must watch' season comes to an end. As a society, we were brought up to believe that children learn from adults (and I'm sure that there has been a lot of parental guidance in the kitchen for these pint-sized contestants) - but in this case, it seems to be the adults who are learning a bigger lesson. I'm now feeling rather ashamed of myself as a mother and mentor of my children in the kitchen. Yes, they both do cook well - but my son taught himself. He was always accomplished in the kitchen, especially with anything that included spices, and always eager to make breakfast or dinner for his little sister, when Tom and I were overwhelmed with work. Whereas our daughter has become the queen of late night escapades in the kitchen, while studying till unearthly hours on her degrees. It is definitely not unusual to be woken at 1.00am in the morning with her latest batch of chocolate chip and peanut butter cookies or banana and walnut muffins. Maybe it isn't too late to give them a few more pointers in the kitchen and pretend that I've always mentored their culinary passions. Please read and enjoy...

Pat Rafter is a universally admired charismatic Aussie who as Helen Flanagan found out over a carrot, ginger and beetroot juice, is also a chocoholic. very Thursday morning it’s sea, sand and sweat on Sunshine Beach for Pat Rafter, Brett
E
Ogilvie, Chris Fleming, Sam Ingham Myers, Gary Krugar and “any other stray mates at the time, who want to join in”. The training session up and down the stairs, running on
hard or soft sand, swimming and other exercises that are exhausting just to watch is, says Pat about “working up a good sweat and pushing ourselves so we can eat more chocolate or eat more food or drink more wine - whatever the weakness may be”.
at sunshine... Pat was born in Mount Isa, the third-youngest in a family of nine children. He discovered his love of tennis at the tender age of five when he began playing with his father and three older brothers. Jocelyn and Jim Rafter and their family moved to Eumundi in 1980, and dad made the kids go to church every Sunday. “I don’t know which I hated more – church or school,” recalls Pat who also had a passion for soccer until his Yandina Soccer Club kept getting belted 11 and 15 goals to nil. “One thing I really noticed, we obviously weren’t wealthy, but my father found a way of putting money in the church collection box every time it went around. Whether it was some loose change or a five dollar note, or whatever it may be, that stuck with me. I saw that as a great gesture and I've always been brought up to give even when you don't have a lot. That's another great Australian value that we have. "I got a lot of my values from my mum and dad, especially my father who was big into giving, such as a block of land to any of his children that needed a hand.” When he was 13, a pint-sized Pat, who was sick of losing to “Joe Blow up the road” in country tournaments, had his career saved by understanding parents. They said to him: “Have a break, you don’t have to play tennis”. “It lasted three weeks but it was probably what I needed.” After many years playing in amateur tennis associations, he turned his attention to the professional tennis circuit in 1991. And the rest as they say is history: Back to back victories at the US Open; his climb to the top of the world rankings; searching for his third consecutive US Open title in 1999 but forced to withdrew from his first round match against Cedric Pioline after suffering severe tendonitis in his right shoulder; holding the number one position in the world continues next page...

rankings for three weeks; and using his gruelling brand of serve-volley tennis to come agonisingly close to capturing a dream Wimbledon crown. He hung up his racquets after victory over Sebastian Grosjean in Australia’s 2001 Davis Cup final defeat at the hands of France and last year had the $82 million tennis centre in Brisbane named after him. Pat and and wife Lara Feltham lived in a palatial home overlooking Chinamans Beach at Sydney’s Mosman after he retired, before eventually moving back to Noosa with children Joshua and India, to be closer to Pat’s family, who except for one brother, all live on the Sunshine Coast. They keep a Sydney residence in Woollahra for a city-fix and be close to Lara’s parents when they visit. The couple bought a 1285 square metre double dress circle block at Sunshine Beach in 2006 and

earlier this year moved in to the house which was designed by John Burgess and built by Jim Scholes. It blurs the borders between indoors and out, captures salty breezes, has oceans of glass, indulges one’s senses and oozes ultra contemporary beach house chic. The sophisticated Vantage automatic system including cameras, control almost everything from window and door security to air conditioning, lights, audio, television and blinds using a one-touch easy-to-use pad. The blank all-white canvas with massive living areas and classy features are “work in progress which Lara has had (and is having) a large impact on. It’s her thing,” says Pat who enjoys eating out with his family at local restaurants such as Rickys and Wasabi, however at home it’s fish and salad or beef stew with mash and apricot chicken, from his mother’s recipes. “Lara likes a glass of red wine, but for me it’s a shandy or preferably water – oh and lots of chocolate.” Pat, an investor in Brisbane’s very popular Jade Buddha restaurant, says he’d love to get a small dog to head off the brown snakes which he believes are lurking and also to keep them away from Joshua 8 and India 5 who attend St Andrews School. “Love, support and time is what it means to be a good parent and I try my best to achieve those things. Also discipline and respect. “I like to help out with the Noosa surf festival and if mayor Bob Abbot needs some support I’ll be there as well as it’s important to help out in the local community,” effuses the 185cm tall, 37 year old whose star sign is Capricorn. “With tournaments in China, Sydney and London coming up in senior’s events, a dabble into a possible television show which I cannot say anymore about, plus Bonds commitments, I am very busy in the months ahead,” says Pat who uses creams at night to help his dry skin. “But I’m not a metrosexual. I am a bogan who loves life.”

new Spring lamb...
Lamb is gLamb this spring
Lamb is in vogue all year round but spring brings sweet, tender lamb into its peak supply making it the perfect time to enjoy it. Making a name on plates around Australia is Sovereign Five Star, which has produced Australia’s finest pure meat lambs since the 1880s, is committed to preserving the land and sheep raising lifestyle for future generations and is an all natural prime meat raised in the pristine goldfields of Victoria. A group of select professional prime lamb producers supply the brand and lambs are hand selected at each stage of the production chain to meet the strict specifications. The pure lamb genetics and the natural feeding regime of lush pastures, clean water and air, give the lamb a tender texture and a mild rich flavour. Sovereign Five Star recently won a Gold Medal at the Royal Queensland Food & Wine Show where the judges included celebrity chef Matt Moran of Aria in Brisbane and Brisbane and culinary identity Peter Howard. As the weather warms up, welcome the new season by adding some 'gLamb' to your spring collection. Rock Salt’s Stuart Webster says it's what everyone's eating this spring. “Lamb complements fresh, light flavours making it easy to accessorise with new season vegetables and herbs. It has a mild flavour, almost a sweetness and is extremely tender. “Try our herb crusted lamb rump, roast celeriac puree, rosemary and shallot butter, red wine jus or the char grilled lamb rack, pumpkin, rocket and hazelnut salad, cous cous and roast garlic dressing and you’ll agree. Spring lamb is on the menu at Rock salt Quamby Place ”

How to cook a lamb roast: 1. Preheat the oven. Different lamb roasts require different temperatures and cooking times. 2. Use the weight of the roast as a guide for how long to cook it for. Check for doneness just before the estimated time is up. 3. Rest the lamb roast before carving. This keeps the meat juicy and tender. Loosely cover with foil and allow to rest for 10-15 minutes before carving. How to tell when your lamb roast is ready: 1. Using tongs to test if your lamb roast is ready. Gently prod or squeeze the roast - rare is very soft, medium rare is soft, medium is springy but soft, medium well is firm and well done is very firm. 2. Using a meat thermometer to test if your lamb roast is ready. A meat thermometer measures the internal temperature of the meat and is the easiest and most accurate way to tell if your roast is ready

Art of pears Oh pear. Long the inspiration of artists, pear varieties and their luscious flavours are inspiring art on plates
P
ears have inspired chefs and artists alike for hundreds of years. Just as Cezanne, Van Gogh and Picasso recognised the beauty of the humble pear, foodies also understand its enormous potential. According to chef David Bitton, who for the past three years has been working closely with pear growers to create quintessential pear recipes, there is no such thing as the humble pear. He says home cooks need to consider how to use each pear variety to fully TRADITIONALLY PEARS HAVE BEEN THE HERO OF DESSERT BUT THINK appreciate their flavour. uintessential Noosa restaurants are perched on the wharf at Quamby Place and have uninterrupted views over the river and sensational sunsets. At mod-Oz Ricky's River Bar + Restaurant there's a knowledgeable and friendly front of house team and popular Glenn Bowman is heading the kitchen brigade from October. Danielle Gjestland’s Wasabi has Hajime Horiguchi plating up contemporary Japanese and the equally popular casual Rock Salt BYO has diners spilling out onto the pavement on the park side. Danielle says the restaurant is arguably the only land-based restaurant in town where you cannot see other buildings, people walking or cars. Cassie and Stuart Webster, who have been restaurateurs on the Noosa Wharf since 1997, apart from a two year break travel overseas after who-can-ever-forget Pommies have moved into their new space two doors away. It’s more intimate, has softer lighting, the interior is black, white and charcoal with bold black and white stripes on the feature walls, Italian tiles, is fully air-conditioned, and the cosy banquette is the most popular to dine on Monday to Saturday nights. Salivating takes on a new meaning at Gordon Herford Master Jeweller and Belinda Herford's Sable Gallery. De Beers award-winning Gordon and contemporary abstract artist extraordinaire Belinda, think the precinct has a calming and aesthetic ambience which is augmented by the beautiful outlook of the river and park. "The fantastic restaurants provide a relaxing atmosphere and with a great complement of shops, salons and art gallery for browsing, you can spend the day having treatments, your hair done, buying and viewing bespoke jewellery and original art and having a long lunch at the famous Ricky's or Wasabi overlooking the river all within a ferry ride from Hastings Street," say Gordon and Belinda. Those with an eye or an inquiring mind for real estate will have a field day peering into the windows of Tom Offermann Real Estate. "Two hundred holiday apartments fringe the waterfront peninsular formed by Quamby Place," remarks Tom. "This means that we are always surrounded
noosastyle
t by happy and relaxed holiday makers eating at our restaurants and cafes. This creates a wonderful environment in which to work and needless to say a lot of walk-in business." Gavin Maddock who gave the Quamby Place a make-over says: "My solution included transforming the 'face' of the precinct to communicate a warm welcome and sense of arrival. This was achieved by using a variety of etched metals on the facade and granite paving on the footpaths. The look is dynamic yet exemplifies Noosa - naturally. Quamby Place is 900 metres to Hastings Street, a ferry stop en route from Tewantin to Noosa Heads, or a ten minute walk to Gympie Terrace in Noosaville.

Anglers cast their lines in anticipation of hooking whiting; roller-bladers, scooters and walkers many with dogs on leashes, pound the meandering pavement; exercise equipment is well patronized amongst the keep-fit fraternity and cyclists use the dedicated pathway which extends from the Noosa River, looping from the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club around Noosa Waters; or via the mangroves and creeks will take a two-wheeler enthusiasts to Noosa Junction. Book a tour and a jazz cruise or hire a houseboat, half cabin cruiser, pontoon boat, jet-ski, kayak, canoe, fishing skiff, sailing boat, trike or a tennis court. The Noosa River is home to the Riverlight Ferry which wends it way from Tewantin to Hastings Street and return, picking up and dropping off passengers. The system of waterways from Noosa, which includes clear lakes, dark tannin waters and sand dunes, forms the gateway to the world’s largest sand island, and heritage-listed Fraser Island. Life down by the riverside and environs exudes a casual elegance and relaxed ambience and with its smorgasbord of restaurants, alfresco eateries and take-outs, there’s also a culinary tour of the world to be experienced and enjoyed.

new resort a sea of green
ROASTERY & ESPRESSO BAR
Five hundred metres from the Laguna Bay shoreline and surrounded by its own sea of green is Outrigger Little Hastings Street Resor t & Spa, which sits above the southern end of Hastings Street tucked in beside Noosa National Park.
Cutting a striking pose against its leafy green backdrop, the resort’s design, inspired by a Scandinavian village, features all the five-star facilities one would expect, while respecting the natural environment. Situated on a former banana plantation, over 36,000 trees were planted as part of the re-vegetation program to form wildlife corridors to Noosa National Park that is home to over 1100 species of flora and fauna. Guests will want for nothing when stepping into their luxe, self-contained suites, villas and penthouses. Room interiors feature unique design elements such as raked plied timber ceilings, offset by sandstone floors, indigenous art and attractive furnishings. The extensive use of glass and louvres, minimises airconditioning use, while also drawing the eye to the national park. Other resort features include a stand-alone day spa, restaurant, bar, pool, lap pool, gym and conferencing facilities for up to 350 delegates. A private lookout is ideal for sunset cocktails and boardwalks linking the resort to numerous walking trails throughout Noosa National Park providing a smooth transition for guests into the park, which boasts magnificent ocean views.

A new passion and interest in food has been stimulated by reality shows such as Masterchef. hildren cooking food, who would have ever thought that? Perhaps it’s a healthy reminder never to underestimate what children can achieve especially if it’s something they love, just like their dads. Making birthday cakes especially decorating is 9-year old Mikayla Moody’s forte however dad Ryan Moody, the sous chef of the Sheraton Noosa Resort & Spa says making chocolate mousse was a different story. “She hadn’t quite mastered the whisk so it ended up the walls. Perhaps she should stick to and chopping vegetables. And don’t how it happened but recently wife Naomi, taste-tester extraordinaire 2year old Dakotah, Makayla and I ended up in a very funny but messy food fight!” “I love to cook for the kids, everything from humble bangers and mash and summer barbecues to sticky pork ribs and the kid’s favourite of pork medallions with soft polenta,” says Ryan who tries to introduce them to new and different foods whilst telling them stories of working in a French restaurant, eating cow’s tongues, pigs trotters, ears, cheeks, sheep’s brains and other offal. Mikayla covers her ears yelling ‘yuk’. “Re the Masterchef phenomena, a lot of chefs get angry at the thought of these inexperienced contestants/winners opening restaurants after just six months after being on the show. Many of us have been cooking for years and are still leaning technique. Connecting food and customers in the media though is definitely a positive for the industry and junior Masterchef, it’s the cute factor but hey that’s TV.” Matt Golinski of TV’s Ready, Steady, Cook fame and Rolling Dolmades’ maestro, and wife Rachel have 11-year old twins Sage and Willow who love to eat almost anything especially salads. Starlia 9, Matt says “loves to eat anything she can get her hands on when she helps me out at the Noosa Farmers’ Market. “Our favourite time to eat together is on my rare weekend morning off. This is a great time to reinforce good table manners. Rachel cooks pancakes or eggs, and there is always linen and flowers on the table on our veranda where we tend to relax and enjoy each others company. “Rachael and I love to go to Coconut Grove, picnic as a family or share a meal with friends. The kids love to cook way too much. Particularly Willow. Her most exciting cooking experience was when she was only 4 and decided to make sushi before we woke up. She turned on all the burners on the stove, got the nori out and carefully laid it all on top. We woke to the fire alarm and her standing on a chair with a tea towel trying to make it stop. Don't know where she got that from. My wife never burns anything and she does blame me for that gene! She might have to put some hours in at the Rolling Dolmade kitchen to get it out of her system.” Matt loves the way Masterchef is creating a buzz about people cooking their own food although the theatrics are a bit over the top. “The more people have a go at cooking the better,” acknowledges Matt. “When you cook for yourself, you know what is in your food, it's usually cheaper, and better for you, and the creative process can be really fun.”

The best rum? Did you know that Australia is home to the best rum maker in the world?
S
tuart Gilbert, Master Distiller at Holey Dollar Rum has been making hugely popular rums for over 10 years, but it is his newest rum creations that have really caused a stir around the world. Last year ALL three of his rums won “Best in Class” Awards in their very first competition – the prestigious and highly competitive International Wine & Spirits Competition 2009. The Holey Dollar ‘Overproof’ Rum (rrp $64.99) then went on to beat a vast array of respected Caribbean and West Indian rums to take the overall ‘World’s Best Rum’ Trophy in a unanimous panel vote. Proving this is not just a flash in the ‘pot-still’, recently, the International Wine & Spirits Competition 2010 announced its results in London and again all three of the Holey Dollar Rums were awarded “Best in Class”. Gilbert started the Holey Dollar Rum Distilling Company in Sydney back in 2008. He was already well-known as an international rum judge and maker of successful rums and but this wasn’t quite enough for a man with a mission to produce superior quality rum. So he starting putting all his skills and efforts into the art of making and blending small quantities of rum with complexity, flavour and diversity, that were still affordable luxuries for the

everyday person in Australia - a country whose first currency of trade was rum. Rum-making is a living process, linking nature with human ingenuity: a melding of technology and artistry. It is created by taking molasses, adding yeast, distilling and maturation. The variables within the process are almost infinite but by only using the finest natural raw materials, the best fermentation procedures, together with an experience and devoted Master Blender, you can create something that sets you aside from other rums. At Holey Dollar nothing artificial is used, no expense is spared, and quality is never substituted, to create the ultimate range of rums.” The judges at the IWSC obviously agree that the result is a set of three exceptional rums. There is still another few months to wait to see if Holey Dollar Rum will retain their title of ‘Worldwide Distiller of the Year Award” (to be announced in London at the Awards Dinner on 17th November 2010) but the company is on the announced shortlist, so the scene is set for another Australian victory. Stuart collected this award last year, making Holey Dollar Rum the first Australian company in the show’s 40 year history to claim the title. Holey Dollar Rum is the only rum which is owned and distributed by wholly Australian owned companies and is available with the full range throughout Australia at 1st

That’s the spirit One hundred per cent Australian owned Kinkynero dark rum and Kinkylux white rum, produced by the makers of Vodka O (ASM Liquor), are proving they’re up there with the best, taking out Gold in the rum categories of the 2010 World Spirit Awards in Europe. Kinkynero and Kinkylux were up against more established global rum brands and it was very much a David versus Goliath battle as the Aussie-owned spirits were awarded Gold in the dark and white rum categories and competed against over 1,000 brands from around the world. Other wins included Double Gold for Tequila Blu at the two most prestigious spirit tasting awards in the world - the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and the 2010 World Spirit Awards in Europe. Tahbilk 1860 Vines Shiraz 2004 Wine industry doyen James Halliday has been impressed once again by Tahbilk’s iconic wines, describing them as “absolutely outstanding” in his 2011 edition of the Australian Wine Companion. Summer is almost here and so is the dilemma of garbing up. Kerrie Friend checks with her California gal pals to see what’s hot.

Summer lovin’
G
lorious summer. What to wear, how to wear it and what’s the latest? All vexing questions every season, aren’t they? They won’t solve the world’s problems of course but they can make us look and feel our best. It’s all about image - about taking care of our spirit, soul and body and that includes beauty, fashion and style. I love summer for so many reasons - the beach, suntan, alfresco dining and new fashion trends for that extra oohh la la and summer lovin’. With bright sunshine comes a fresh approach to colours. Think turquoise, green, metallics especially gold, vivid orange, yellow and pinks to cheer up any fashionsta’s wardrobe. Step out in a white sun dress, tunic, shorts, white jeans or capris and if you’re game a white mani/pedi is a Hollywood hit. White is the must-have again this summer. A seasonal favourite is the new light, cotton chambray shirt-dress, yes I said shirt-dress. Whatever the occasion this versatile garment will have you ready and so appealing in minutes for almost any party or event. Pair it with white capris or jeans and trim with a thin bright or neutral belt. Over a white mini or a swimsuit and you’re ready for the beach. This is a summer goodie, take my word. Add a canvas fedora and a bright tote with say a graphic zebra design and you’ve stepped from Malibu into Noosa. And don’t forget to embrace the beautiful array of summer wedges to complement your chic look. Also perfect with cuffed shorts or floral and strapless dresses. Pretty makes a return with flowers a-blooming everywhere. Clothes, shoes, accessories and bags – you name it. For make up think pretty too with gorgeous colours for eyes, lips and cheeks. Place flowers in your hair to add softness. Swipe blue mascara instead of black, teal and aqua eye shadow, turquoise eyeliner and nude lips for the latest look. A very popular Hollywood beauty tip is to wear tinted foundation, to give the illusion of no makeup, tousled hair, red or coral lips and as they say in tinsel town you’re “red carpet ready” for any occasion. I abide by this because it’s effortless. A few other LA ideas sure to make you the centre of attention are bright knee length or just above, dresses in cheeky colours, ruffles and flirty necklines, bold bracelets with sparkle or my personal favourite Hollywood accessory cuff bracelets with rhinestones. For swimsuits florals are Carrie Underwood’s pick; Kate Perry is into bright and ruffles; black is so Mrs Kutchner aka Demi Moore and my favourite is Boho. Finally on my Hollywood hot list are stylish For swimsuits hairstyles for extra fun. The wild knot, a messy florals are Carrie boho bun of braids (plaits) swirled together to Underwood’s pick; form an unkempt trendy style or a low undone Kate Perry is into ponytail is a 60’s bombshell feel with pieces bright and ruffles; falling to frame the face. Maybe the fishtail black is so Mrs loose side braid that looks good even after Kutchner aka Demi you’ve been swimming is more you. Make the Moore and my choice and it will be so Malibu and Noosa. Add favourite is Boho a smile and you’re guaranteed to look and feel even more beautiful.

where are they now?
Father of Noosa cuisine I
n the 60s Luc Turschwell, a Frenchman brought up in North Africa, packed his rucksack and headed to Australia. After several years in the Sydney rag trade, he and wife Lyn and their two young sons Pasquale and Jean-Pierre took off around Australia, eventually arriving in Noosa in 1975. What were your beginnings as a ‘tour de force’ in the local food scene? I met a fellow bridge player and cook who owned Chanson de Mer, a French restaurant at the Junction. She asked me to mind the business while she went to Europe. When she returned we decided to continue our love affair with Noosa, opening Belmondo’s, down from Barrys on the Beach, in a quaint fibro cottage with chairs and tables on the verandah, which spilled onto Hastings Street and people drank pastis, played chess or backgammon and ate choukchouka, a breakfast dish with tomato, sates and more, anytime of the day. It was the first of its kind. Developers moved in, made me an offer to drop the lease and later I opened a new Belmondo’s, where music was a big part of the scene. It was so successful and Len Evans wrote it up as one of the best cafes in Australia. Gastons at Sunshine Beach continued the tradition, then came La Sabbia on the Belmondo’s site and Café Le Monde with seating for 200 outside (it was totally open), cheap food and great coffee. What an amazing success story. Fast forward a few years and a few things have changed. Wife Nicci and I had Misha and Zachary, Pasqual and JeanPierre worked in the restaurants in their school holidays, and then went university. Jean-Pierre went into IT and in recent years Pasqual was the manager/co-owner of Rickys. After selling Café Le Monde (and the Belmondo’s name), I
taught life skills (with a hands-on approach), to 16 to 18 year old hospitality students at the Noosa Community Training Centre. It’s gratifying to see students go on to good positions as baristas, chefs and bar managers in restaurants. The Turschwell name has infinite pedigree and is synonymous with Noosa restaurants and Hastings Street, even today. As kids Jean-Pierre was known as Belmondo which means ‘good people/person’ and Pas was called Gaston, so naturally his new bar and bistro (near the corner of Hastings Street and Noosa Drive), will be called Gastons. It will open in a couple of months for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a late night kitchen headed by Brett Tait. From his hill-top retreat in Cootharaba, Luc Turschwell, the Father of Noosa Cuisine, will no doubt be reminiscing about the good old days in Hastings Street and itching for a game of chess at Gastons.

The hottest trends from bounce specialists for summer are:

coppers infused with soft golden highlights using the same tones to achieve a multi-dimensional colour result. This technique is great for clients wanting high shine with a glossy finish. The rootfade technique gives the client the opportunity to experiment with colour and highlights to achieve an earthy and natural feel. The soft graduation of tones from dark to light gives a balance between feminity and practicality. This is a technique and colour result where the client can feel that less is more. Best for highlighted clients. Wanting low maintenance and better conditioned hair, with an all over softer colour result. Styling for the summer season is all about beautiful, wearable
hair. Its about haircuts that suit the individual by creating simple, clean and feminine shapes. It is very important for a woman to take care of her hair by keeping it clean, moisturised and trimmed, so that it remains soft, shiny and healthy. No More Bad Hair Days! Bounce Hair & Image owner Mary Randles says that they now offer a revolutionary treatment that works by infusing keratin deep into the hair cuticle, using the hair's natural ingredient to achieve radical shine, beautiful smoothness and a healthy manageable style. Everyone can benefit from GK Treatments, even over processes and chemically damages hair. In fact, the more damaged the better. GK Brazilian hair treatment deeply reconditions and repairs, making it so much more that just a straightening system. Better yet, it weatherproofs hair against flyaway frizz and the effects of moisture. When hair is gorgeous, shiny and manageable everyday, the time required to style at home is reduced - what a pleasure !

alentino Garavani was born in Italy, lauded in Paris, and his couture house was the first outside of Paris to be officially recognised by the French Government. Retrospective: Past/Present/Future, the exhibition of the House of Valentino which is at the Gallery of Modern Art, incorporates a stunning array of Valentino’s haute couture designs from the late 1950s through to his final collection in January 2008, as well as recent creations by Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli who were appointed creative directors for Valentino in 2008 thus highlighting the future direction of this most esteemed fashion house. “The retrospective of 100 ensembles includes some of the most important haute couture creations originally shown in the exhibition ‘Valentino: Themes and Variations’ at Les Arts Décoratifs, Paris, in 2008,” says Queensland Art Gallery director Tony Ellwood. “The exhibition explores Valentino’s techniques and recurring motifs such as ornamentation, the use of geometric and animal prints, frills, folds and pleats as well as the creative possibilities of volume, surface and line. “Designs from the house of Valentino which have been coveted and worn by European royalty, Hollywood stars and high society figures such as Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor and many others are displayed, along with the stunning black and white gown Julia Roberts wore to the 73rd Academy Awards in 2001. “In addition to a number of ensembles from Valentino’s noted ‘White Collection’ from 1968, the exhibition features a selection of signature

The exquisite haute couture collection reveals Valentino's mastery of the elegant line, classic form and opulent detail.” The exhibition explores Valentino's design approach across more than five decades: the recurrence of geometric patterns and graphic prints, the skilful use of fabric to create dramatic silhouettes, the creative possibilities of volume, surface and line and the distinctive palette of black, white and 'Valentino red'.

Designed on the Su Talented Jacinta Richmond organised an ambitious event at Noosa’s Quay West Resort & Spa and all the anticipated glitz and glamour was there without a single wardrobe malfunction. Prior to the main gala event there was a stiletto shoe workshop and shopping evening; the State finals of the APEX Australia Teenage Fashion Awards for high school students to showcase their own designs; and amongst the local designers at the main event were Blossom Betty, Eva Lilly, Hive, Linda India, My Favourite and Sinerji with Kat Hogg’s Hive swimwear’s range is now stocked in over 50 stores nationally and exported internationally to five stores in the U.S.A. Kat said the region formed the perfect creative inspiration for her designs and an ideal base for her company headquarters. Betty Blossom is indigenous artist Leearna Saunder’s alter-ego. Fabrics of choice are recycled, reclaimed and vintage/retro textiles, creating unique pieces with hand finished details, lots of whimsy and feminist humour. Blossom Betty is about self expression in the guise of eccentric femme attire. Channel 7 presenter and MC Rosanna Natoli, who was dressed in a Richard de Chazal elaborate gown, said the festival was a tribute to environmentally friendly style with everything from eco-chic to investment dressing. From kids wear to swimwear and headwear, beachwear from the 50s to the 80s and feathers, furs, gloves, plus dazzling gold garments and more, the event proved to be a great night for Noosa designer label Eva Lilly who sold a $1000 mermaid gown with silver scales straight off the catwalk from the finale. The buyer, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I had to have it, the quality, the cut, everything about it.”

MENS FASHION - WHAT’S HOT for SPRING 2010
M
en’s fashion this Spring is about recreating classic styles. Partly in response to the world economy, it’s important to consider versatility and the ability to coordinate across business and casual wear to maximise your wardrobe’s return on investment. A distinct nautical theme is apparent across many designer ranges with classic striped, checked and textured business shirts in traditional blues and browns plus softer pinks, lilacs and yellows. All team perfectly with classic silk ties, cufflinks and fine woollen suits for business wear. Remove the tie and wear with chinos in various colours for smart casual. Invest in a pair or two of well kept dark denim jeans. And, for hotter months include some wide neck tees with medium length shorts. Footwear should be comfortable. Invest in one or two pairs of quality black or tan leather shoes in classic designs, including brogues. Wear them with matching belts and dark coloured socks and they’ll take you anywhere. Of course, deck shoes are still very much in vogue for warmer months worn with rolled up chinos, but definitely no socks. For afternoons and evening partying, you’ll stay on trend in fine floral and paisley prints, as we are seeing a revival of retro 50’s and 60’s styles, as well as more dressed up preppy styles, plus denim on denim styles. For your final touch, check your mirror, as almost anything goes for well styled and maintained hair. You’ll see retro mod, teddy boy styles and quiffs, plus longer shaggy styles (but no mullets), all with optional short clipped stubble beards.

OK so I made a few more and ventured into mandolins. About 10 years ago good friend Geoff Adeney suggested a jazz guitar or arch top guitar which is rather unique as it is styled like a violin. The front and back plates are carved into a gentle arch from a one inch thick piece of timber, usually softwood such as spruce for the front and hardwood like maple for the back. The art is to get the thickness of these plates right. They need to taper from the middle to the edges to maximize the acoustic response yet risbane-born Dave is one of six kids. Retreat to the country only 800 metres from Eumundi town, watch the kids on their horses in the dressage arena, stretch out in the generously proportioned home, entertain lavishly and live life to the fullest. Travelling though Europe and North Africa, Brad and Karina Pike were enthralled by the use of concrete and stone to not just give strength to a building but create beauty and grandeur. It inspired them to build their dream home and an 11.3 acre property on the Eumundi Range Road had the ‘it’ factor. Located so close to Eumundi and the Bruce Highway, 15 minutes to Noosa, the original block house was 40 years old, part of the local dairy farm which was established in 1910. “Myriad shrubs splash the property with year-round colour and the 100 year old Moreton Bay fig trees and the Norfolk Island pine stand regal and resplendent,” explains Brad who wanted to bring concrete to life using colour, inspiring angles and symmetry in a harmonious style never seen before. “Architect Greg Gibbs understood my vision. The art of tea making meets technology... As the most consumed beverage in the world after water, tea forms a daily ritual that requires careful preparation for maximum enjoyment. The new Automatic Tea Maker & Kettle from Breville knows exactly the right temperature and brewing time required to extract the full aroma and flavour from the most popular tea varieties. Pouring freshly boiled water onto more delicate tea leaves, such as green, oolong and white varieties, may scald the leaves and result in a bitter, astringent taste. Similarly, brewing the tea for too long or too short can result in an unpleasant or tasteless cup. Available from department stores and electrical retailers nationally. RRP $299.95 Diamonds are forever Culinary whiz Lyndey Milan is a typical woman when it comes to receiving useful gifts ahead of expensive sparkling jewellery. It’s a no-go zone but for her friends there’s one notable exception: the Lyndey Milan branded Brilliant Cut Knife, featuring a world-first blade which includes diamonds and silver. The 19 centimetre blade will stay sharp up to 45 times longer than steel due to the world-first alloy. The diamonds give it incredible performance and strength; silver gives unique antibacterial properties for good health; ceramic is for sharpness and holding the cutting edge; plus titanium make it corrosion resistant, flexible and light. “I’ve tested this knife for over 12 months and am very proud to put my name to it – the first in 25 years,” says the ebullient Lyndey, well known multi-award winning author, television and radio presenter, educator and cook. “I love using it for everything. It doesn’t let me down and stays sharp much longer than my steel knives because of the diamonds, something every girl loves.” Priced at $249 including sharpener, the Brilliant Cut Knife by Lyndey Milan is available initially online via www.foreverknives.com.au Give Yourself a Hand... igital versus film? These days there’s really no competition. Only a handful of photographers shoot film and for everyone else it’s a digital world. Remember all the 6x4 prints, the endless albums and those that didn’t make it, stored in shoes boxes under the bed. Nowadays we shoot thousands of images and either leave them on our camera or dump them into our computers never to be seen again. Problem is, if we do end up burning them to disks they will only last on average five to ten years and if they’re not backed up, will be lost forever. If stored only on a single hard drive there could be a hard drive failure and once again the precious memories are gone. Solutions to storing our digital data include back up on at least two preferably three different hard drives or data disks and upload images onto a web based storage application like Google, so if you lose your PC for whatever reason you will always have a copy of your photos. There are many modern solutions to make our photos into something tangible such as an album or artwork. There are many web-based companies offering affordable photo books that are easy to use and the quality is excellent. With special images the latest canvas prints you can create artwork from your own photos. On Surfari gallery at Gympie Terrace Noosaville, specialises in creating long lasting canvas artwork. You’ve probably heard of canvas printing but be aware, quality varies immensely depending where you go. The longevity and finish of your canvas will be determined by the quality of the canvas, ink, printer, top coating and quality of the editing. On Surfari has all the best possible canvas printing solutions. For six years the team has been at the forefront of printing on canvas using the finest art canvas, world class Epson printing technology, the latest heat treated laminated finish and professionally edited photos. Hedging the beds Creating gorgeous green screens and hedges including edible ones is easy.
F
orget the hedge warfare of the English who planted the rampant Leyland cypress which grows to 20 metres, blocks light and started neighbourly ructions. These days it’s all about love of hedges not war with so many options to consider. John Scomparin from Outside Noosa says he loves hedges, their clean lines and formality. “So many plants can be used such as varieties of lilly pilly as they can grow into a sizeable tree and hedges from 1.5 to five metres. It’s an Australian native sub tropical plant, therefore ideal in this area. “Another good one is murraya paniculata or orange jasmine. This generally grows up to four metres high and has lush green, thick foliage, masses of white flowers throughout the year and a beautiful jasmine scent. Murrayas can be grown into an excellent hedge from one to 4 metres. Once established it is very hardy. “Other recommendations are: Gardenia Florida can be hedged from 500 mm to one metre, is quite dense but its beauty lies its prolific flowers from September through to April; camellia sasanqua, comes in a variety of colours and ideally hedged from 500 mm to three metres; metrosideros Fiji fire is a magnificent shrub that makes a good hedge with year-round brilliant red foliage. It is also idea for seaside conditions. “Japanese box is a slower growing dwarf shrub, with glossy green, oval foliage. Use in high quality hedge borders from 200 mm, up to one metre high such as around a pool. It is the best box hedge for warmer areas like ours, will grow in full sun or part shade and requires little water once established. “Rosemary blue lagoon is a wonderful perennial herb that can be hedged around vegetable gardens or more formal herb gardens or can be a simple garden hedge.” Allison from Eplants in Grays Road Doonan has a wide range of plants suitable for hedging or screening, available in large quantities and sizes from 140mm pots up to 100 litre advanced stock. In addition to the common garden variety bird attracting lilly pillys, there are some different species. “There’s dwarf and compact varieties such as acmena allyn magic and syzgium little gem; weeping varieties such as syz cascade and syz luehamannii; and dense shrubs varieties such as syz aussie southern, syz hinterland gold and szy paniculatum. “For those who prefer distinct colours, try austromrytus blushing beauty with varying shades of purple, weeping foliage that grows to a maximum of two metres; azalea shiraz TM for something different - a rich burgundy foliage and deep pink flower grows to a maximum height of 1.5 metres and duranta 'sheena's gold' is for those who prefer bright and vibrant foliage. Eplants also offers a huge range of grasses and small shrubs which are suitable for borders and small hedges. If you’re considering an edible hedge why not fruits such as fragrant feijoa or Chilean guava. Olives don’t mind pruning, citrus fruit can be effective as are avocados and figs. And don’t forget shrubs with edible leaves such as curry, bay and lemon myrtle
Tips for healthy hedges: Fish and kelp as a foliage fertiliser used at least once a month is recommended to maintain shiny, glossy leaves and overall plant health. To maintain soil condition the use of lime in high rain fall areas and organic fertilisers are encouraged at least twice a year. Mulch to help keep soil moist, especially in warmer months.

BACKGROUND NOTES
O
wner John Lawson purchased this car from its original owner, Di Franca, who lived on a property north of Catanzaro, Calabria, in 1972, he had learned of the car indirectly from Luigi Fusi. “The car was under about 10 tonnes of old farm machinery in a classic stone barn. The machinery included the remains of a 1934 Pescara 6C, which had been purchased in 1934 when the 6C 1750 had been taken off the road. It took us 3 days to remove the junk from it. The wooden framed body, bonnet etc. was somewhat squashed so I removed it.” said John. “I paid the princely sum of 3 million lire – about $3,000 AU – for it and the remains of the Pescara and shipped them to Australia through Genoa.
years John located the main components – chassis, engine etc. of the Mrs Jones car, and as a consequence put CZ1489 in storage at his father’s house in Kew. “In about 1988, a friend wanted to copy some components of the car to complete a restoration. He also arranged to make an accurate copy of the original Zagato body from the Mrs Jones car. I came to an arrangement with him to completely restore CZ1489 over time – I had about 10 other cars and was in no particular hurry” said John. In the meantime, he transferred the engine to Historic and Vintage Restorations for overhaul. Nick Langford dismantled it for the first time since it had left the factory. It proved to be in remarkable condition. It still had the mica Maserati plugs. The bore, crank, overhead drives and so on were unworn. In the interests of longevity it was fitted with Carello style rods and slipper bearings to the big ends, a higher volume oil pump (which incorporates an oil cleaner), new valves and forged pistons, raising the compression to a modest 7:1. The only other nonstandard equipment is the electric fuel pump with pressure
a rare find... 1929 ALFA ROMEO 6C 1750 SS The 1750 still had its original number plate CZ1489 attached (it’s still on the car). The odometer showed 8,342 km, which the old man assured me was the total. This was confirmed when we ultimately dismantled the car and engine – the mechanical components were virtually unworn.” Having purchased the car to use its engine, chassis, gearbox, diff etc to restore the Mrs Jones 1750, which had a great Australian history but had been progressively made non-original including the fitment of a Ford V8 engine in 1939. On Saturday 13th November, Bonhams Australia will hold their first collectors’ motor car auction as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the international company. Early entries for the sale indicate that a mouthwatering array of cars will go under the hammer - not least of which is the aforementioned Jaguar. This rare car is the 17th Jaguar XK120 made and is one of only 58 righthand-drive, alloy-bodied roadsters produced. Chassis number ‘660017’ was sold new in Australia and carries an extensive local race history, including a number of appearances at the world famous Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst, NSW. Having passed through a number of local owner/racers the car was purchased by world famous Lotus collector/historic racer and rally ace John Dawson-Damer in the late 1970s. Having been fully restored by Dawson-Damer in the mid-late 1990s the car has seen little use since and is offered for sale on the open market for the first time in over three decades. It is estimated to fetch at least AUD $140,000. Robert Glover head of collectors’ motor cars at Bonhams Australia comments “Having overseen the successful sale of John’s exceptional collection of Lotus racing cars in late 2008, we feel both privileged and honoured to have been entrusted with the sale of further motor cars from one of the most highly regarded collections in Australia and indeed the world.” Also offered for sale from the same collection will be a 1979 Lotus Esprit JPS Edition. Purchased new from the factory by John Dawson-Damer, this single owner from new car is offered for sale without reserve. It will give collectors’ an affordable opportunity to purchase a part of the DawsonDamer Lotus legacy not to mention a rare example of Lotus’s first true super car.

The body was made to a very high standard, as were the seats, hood, tonneau cover etc. “We spared no expense... the car drives extremely well.” John explains “the car has been on road complete for about 3 years, during which time we have driven it about 500km, bringing the total mileage to about 8,900km. For the past 18 months, Historic and Vintage Restorations has used the car as the reference in the total restoration of the Mrs Jones car. It has finally served the purpose for which I purchased it nearly 40 years ago.” “We get many invitations to car shows and other similar motoring events. We have never raced the car as we have 5 other cars with full competition logbooks etc. Our longer term plan is to take it to Italy on a semipermanent basis and leave it with relatives in the Veneto. This would enable us to compete in events in Italy, Germany, France and the UK, including the Mille

give birth, others will mate. Next stop is Platypus Bay in the Harvey Bay Marine Park, for about five days of socialising and for the new born calves to grow stronger before they return home. “Over the past 14 years there’s been a significant increase in larger pods,” say Trish and Wally Franklin of the Oceania Project. “This is related to changes in the behaviour, as the numbers and density of whales in Hervey Bay have increased from approximately 2000 in 1992 to 7000 in 2005. “Hervey Bay formed by Fraser Island, is sheltered, shallow and conveniently located just west of the main migratory pathway so is easily accessible. Whatever time of the season you visit, always expect something different at this unique whale watch destination”. Multi-award-winning ecotourism resort Kingfisher Bay has teamed with the pioneers of whale watching in Hervey Bay, Brian and Jill Perry and daughter Sarah, who’s Hervey Bay’s only female skipper, to run half-day whale watching excursions, departing Fraser Island each day during the season, to stare and gasp in wonderment as pods come together in affiliations, then strut their stuff including the peduncle slap. “That occurs when the peduncle, the area from the dorsal fin to the tail, and flukes are thrown out of the water then slapped back down,” describes Brian who moved to Hervey Bay in 1986 to run fishing charters but changed his mind when he saw “big logs” which turned out to be whales. His bright idea of running whale watching tours was laughed at by everyone including the local paper. “There were only around 200 whales on the east coast and no calves were seen in the first two years,” recalls Brian who remembers September 1, 1987 as being his first and best day. “I had no idea what to expect and it was such a surprise when three whales swanned around and under the boat for two hours. I jumped, clapped and yelled for hours and still do so today. “We have been whale watching around Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii but Hervey Bay is by far the best place to see whales up close every day of the season. And when it comes to ‘whale soup’, this season has all the hallmarks of being the best ever,” enthuses Brian who maintains the perfect complement to whale watching is staying at Fraser Island’s Kingfisher Bay Resort which blends harmoniously with the sensitive ecological system of the world’ largest sand island. writer: Helen Flanagan If you go: Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island has a two-night Whale Watch package. Latest eye pods & beauty spots before crashing with a thunderous splash, leaving behind a calm area of water or footprint on the surface, is truly amazing. An hour away from Kingfisher Bay Resort on world heritagelisted Fraser Island, Quick Cat II skipper Brian Perry spots pods several kilometres away and yells excitedly “there’s a blow…and another”, referring to the adult baleen (toothless) humpback whales with two lungs the size of a small car, that can be emptied and refilled in less than two seconds. Once near the surface, they exhale forcefully through two blowholes on top of their heads at 40 kph with the distinctive cloud formed from vapour condensation. A vanguard of wave-riding dolphins heralds their approach. Exuberant vocal whale watchers are rewarded as six curious cetaceans shimmy under the boat, often just an arm’s length away, continually showing off by seemingly ‘lying’ on the water and slapping one or both fins, submerging themselves nearly vertically slapping tail flukes and rising out of the water so their eyes are just clear of the surface, before slipping back into their aquatic playground. Strict regulations ensure boats and aircraft observe an exclusion zone of at least 100 metres from the whales and do not cause them to alter direction, speed, behaviour or split pods. Much eye-balling reveals barnacle-covered heads and checking out tail flukes to see who’s who, confirms there’s no sign of Hervey Bay’s patron whale Nala, named after a character in the Lion King who has had eight calves in nine years, nor other faves Stumpy, Nemo, Caesar, Phantom and the famous white Migaloo, seen recently further north. Fingers crossed arrivals are imminent. This is also a lesson in appreciating the sheer enormity of each warm-blooded adult, which weighs up to 40 tonnes - the equivalent of 600 people or 11 elephants. On average they’re 15 metres long and the tail with its unique pattern like a human finger-print, is about five metres across. A new born calf is around 4.5 metres long, weighs about 1.5 tonnes and suckles about 600 litres of cottage cheese-like milk each day. The life cycle of the southern humpback brings them to the calm safe waters of Platypus Bay. After leaving the rich feeding grounds of Antarctica, they journey 6000 kilometres north to the warm waters and breeding grounds of the Whitsundays. Some will

Dr Michael Gloster OAM
F
OR DECADES, A SMALL GROUP OF ORDINARY PEOPLE FOUGHT DOGGEDLY TO PRESERVE NOOSA FROM THE RAVAGES OF OVERDEVELOPMENT. AT THE FOREFRONT OF THE BATTLE WAS MICHAEL GLOSTER, WHO TO THIS DAY REMAINS HELL BENT AND OUTSPOKEN ON NOOSA RETAINING ITS NATURAL BEAUTY AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY. Why Noosa and what were your first impressions? Glen and I moved here in 1979 to pursue our youthful dream of being conservation activists in a place we loved and where we could make a difference. We soon learned there were only two organised tribes in town that mattered, and they were at each others throats – the development-at-any-cost Noosa Shire Council, and the conservation-oriented Noosa Parks Association led by Dr Arthur Harrold. Most of the rest of Noosa was either out for some form of wild and wonderful long lunch or playing bowls. Recall the genesis for the shaping of the Noosa and what were some of the more momentous battles? We wanted to make a difference and apprenticing with Arthur provided a rapid education on the 101 conservation challenges that had to be solved. The common theme was the development-at-any-cost mentality of both Noosa Council and the Bjelke Peterson government. For us it was pretty wild development vs conservation ride in the 80s and 90s and the Noosa Parks Association won most of them. It was an exhilarating time to be active at the front line. Lots of treasured memories working alongside some remarkable people: Getting NPA activists elected to Noosa Council in sufficient numbers to deliver a raft of conservation and town planning reforms, banning high rise, extending Noosa National Park from Noosa Heads down to Coolum, stopping a Club Med development on Noosa Spit, stopping the 5,000 person Leisuremark development and jet airport on Noosa North Shore, securing the low-rise village atmosphere of Hastings Street, and achieving a Noosa population cap. Now there are number of pet projects I’ve been immersed in for decades that are finally coming to fruition: conversion of Ringtail and Yurol State Forests into National Park, further extensions to both Noosa and Cooloola National Parks, World Heritage Listing for

Noosa North Shore and Cooloola and National Heritage listing for Noosa National Park. What do you think of Noosa today? The brutally enforced amalgamation of 2008 has broken the Noosa community’s heart and it will only be cured by winning back our independence. Until then Noosa’s proud 50 year journey towards getting the balance of conservation and lifestyle right is on hold. Has Noosa lost its sparkle? A community with a broken heart cannot sparkle, it can only grieve, then transform that grief into positive action as opportunities emerge. And how can Noosa keep sparkling for tourists if Tourism Noosa remains little more than a supplicant branch office of a Sunshine Coast Regional Council hell bent on harmonising Noosa’s culture with the rest of the Sunshine Coast? What's on the horizon? As the leader of one of the four community organisations that forms the Noosa Independence Alliance that is preparing for de-amalgamation, I’m optimistic that in 2012 we’ll win back a new independent Noosa Council. It’s exciting to be working alongside some of the leaders of the 80s, 90s and 00s, as well as the emerging next generation of community leaders. Our new shire will include those parts of our community that were previously excluded by the old council boundaries - Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale and Peregian Springs. The Regional Council’s gutless failure to fiercely protect Noosa’s population cap will be reversed. The ‘local’ will be reintroduced into our local civics, enabling a renaissance of local idealism, activism, creativity, conservation and entrepreneurship. Is international Biosphere Reserve recognition borne of visionaries who put in the hard yards? For fifty years the leadership of NPA has been the difference that made the difference. If not for that community activism Noosa would be just another mediocre suburban sprawl by the sea, like Caloundra or Hervey Bay. When faced with less intense development pressures than Noosa, they folded. Collectively, the leadership of NPA held the line, battle
…awarded an OAM in 1996 for services to conservation, town planning and the environment after battle, smear campaign after smear campaign against us, year after year. The Biosphere recognition is a direct result of this body of work. Ownership of the Noosa Biosphere Reserve has been stolen from the Noosa community by the self aggrandising council, which has installed a mediocre bunch of hand-picked puppets onto the pompously named Noosa Biosphere Governance Board. After three years, there has been much posturing, many ratepayer-funded fine food and wine catered talk fests, and no achievements of note. When Noosa wins back its own independent council, exciting and fun times are ahead. Dr Michael Gloster who has an undergraduate degree in architecture, master degree in environmental planning, and PhD in social ecology, was awarded an OAM in 1996 for services to conservation, town planning and the environment. Wife Glen, with a degree in landscape architecture, has been influential in shaping Noosa’s public and private landscapes for over thirty years. They are semi retired, although Glen accepts selected landscape architectural commissions and Michael accepts selected corporate strategic planning commissions. They share a love of wining, dining, travel and more as Michael explains: Currently camping in a spacious gracious unrenovated 70’s riverfront apartment at Munna Point. Our deep water jetty is the perfect jump-off point for our annual coastal cruises in a 44 foot timber yacht Great Sandy, anywhere between Tasmania and Lizard Island. We’re building a modest pavilion home on a pristine four hectare bush block on Noosa North Shore that was previously owned by NPA heroes Arthur and Marjorie Harrold and Bill and Mavis Huxley. We escape to Double Island Point Lighthouse for NPA volunteer work, or by bushwalking through the 80,000 plus hectares of national park that NPA has had protected over the years. We love Italy particularly Tuscany and Sicily and favourite local restaurants are from fish and chips to fine dining anywhere along the Noosaville foreshore or Quamby Place, so we can walk home after a good bottle of red or two.
