T

he shining jewel in the Vranken-Pommery Monopole crown is Champagne Pommery. The Champagne House was pioneered by on woman, a woman that many would consider ahead of her time - Madame Pommery. Her husband founded Champagne Pommery in 1836. Following his death Madame Pommery took over the reigns and this is when the true essence of Pommery was born. The savvy businesswoman realised early in her endeavours that there was a gap in the market - European and British upper-class society were generally straying away from sugardense champagne. This knowledge opened a pathway that saw Madame Pommery laugh the world’s first Brut Champagne in 1874. The rest as they say is history. IN this tumultuous year, Champagne House Maison Pommery has still managed to introduce its highly anticipated 2020 World Collection. Following successful trips to India, Australia, South America and Japan, the

brand has now revealed its next design venture Africa. The new offering, entitled WAX pays homage to the world’s second largest continent and its traditional and inspiring wax prints. The bespoke range showcases three listed edition multi-coloured box designs that offer a true hallmark of African culture and fabrics. Pommery Brut Royal NV is composed of 40 crus and a traditional Champagne blend Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. On the nose it’s vivid and fresh with notes of citrus fruits. The perfect drop for the Festive Season. Pommery Brut Rosé NV adds a touch of Bouzy Grand Cru Pinto Noir, resulting in a pale pink and very delicate Rosé. Pommery Apanage Blanc de Blanc NV is 100% Chardonnay - utterly elegant, fresh and complex. Available exclusively through Qantas Wine now - and available at all major stockists from December.

2020 Melbourne Cup on Hastings Street There was fun to be had in Noosa recently, to rival the quieter Melbourne Cup held in Melbourne this year. Miss Moneypennys was full to overflowing with guests

Santa’s Classy Helpers Spring Luncheon... The scene was set at The Boathouse in Noosaville - fashionable ladies and gentlemen, great food, a glass or three of wine and a stunning panorama of Noosa River. This year’s fundraiser for the SCH charity was more important than ever, with the Covid-19 shutdowns and social distancing making fundraising extremely difficult, and more families and children being added to the annual Shopping Day for families inneed. Lorraine Kenway, owner of Noosa Classy Lady and founder of this important charity, has worked tirelessly with her team all year, to ensure that noone in need misses out on a special Christmas this year. Guest speaker for the luncheon was Noosa Mayor, Clare Stewart, who shared her story with the group and added frightening statistics to the number of needy requiring assistance this year. She proved to be a mesmerising speaker, who had the room engrossed. Both she and Lorraine thanked everyone for their uncompromising commitment to Santa’s Classy Helpers.

Editors desk WELCOME TO OUR 21ST YEAR For all those who have read and lovingly archived our beautiful magazines over the last 21years, there has definitely been a lot to absorb, enjoy, celebrate and learn, from our showcasing of this sometimes eccentric and always captivating seaside Mecca - called Noosa. O

ver the years we’ve seen Noosa grow in strength and character - welcoming more and more ‘sea changers’ and ‘tree changers’ into our idyllic lifestyle with open arms. Over the years, we’ve celebrated with a vast array of Australian notables and celebrities - as well as people just like you and me - all sharing their stories and journeys through life with us. Through the last two decades, we’ve seen the Noosa landscape change, and new residential communities arise - but with our Noosa Council still upholding our valued height restrictions around our coastline. And, our stunning hinterland become home to more and more, artists and artisan producers - all adding their important contributions to our community as a whole. This is why Noosa is such a ‘special’ destination (one that visitors quite often choose to return to permanently). The pristine beaches, fabulous food, exciting shopping experiences, and friendly locals - all mix with the Biosphere and eco-friendly aspects of the region as a whole, to offer a lifestyle that is hard to match anywhere else. In this strange and unprecedented year of 2020, Noosa has found a strong understanding of community and camaraderie - and a comprehension of what it takes to be an effective fraternity of caring people. Our local producers have come to the fore - most

supplying their wares to local restaurants with pride, and even opening their farm gates to welcome avid home cooks onto their farms; so that they too can have access to the very best ingredients available each season. Our local chefs are proud to be able to source exactly what they want from these farms, and showcasing local produce, meats and game to their diners. This is true ‘farmgate to plate’ dining. Over the years, we have been lucky enough to have found a family of loyal advertisers, who have joined us on our journey. Many for the whole 21 years. It is their unwavering support that has allowed us the pleasure of presenting our magazines to our avid readers. And, we can’t forget the innumerable accommodation properties and resorts that proudly display our magazines in their rooms and reception areas; as well as the businesses, coffee shops, restaurants and cafés, boutiques, artist studios, jewellers and professional offices that also offer NOOSA Style proudly to their clients. It’s time to forget Coronavirus and get back to living life to its fullest - and look forward to a bright and prosperous 2021. We wish all our clients, distributors, readers, friends and family - a wonderful Christmas 2020. We also send our heartfelt, best wishes for a safe Christmas and brighter New Year, to all Australian Defence Personnel, First Responders, Hospital and Ambulance staff, and Fire and Police officers. This year they have all gone above and beyond to keep us all safe. Please read and enjoy our celebration issue - and we’ll see you again next year...

MP Life Elections Noosa style... For many, the ins and outs of politics, campaigns and elections are not particularly exciting. However, the residents of Noosa are passionate about their home and what happens in it and this election was no different!

H

aving a ‘birds eye’ view not only as the incumbent MP, but as a candidate and also resident, gave me new insights about how unique we really are. From the outset, residents knew what they wanted. And that was electioneering that met their expectations. Tokenisms, tall tales, half-truths and those trojan postal vote applications are very much on the ‘out’. Commitment, transparency, and grapevine recommendations very much on the ‘in’! There were very few who had not already done their homework, indicative of an engaged and informed community, eager to move into the future. There was only one surprise. The high percentage that continued to support those that showed disrespect to then through the onslaught of misinformation and misleading advertising, letterbox pamphlets and robocalls. Many called this hoodwinking, others outright deception, and were justifiably appalled. With this being glaringly obvious, why? As I have said in previous elections, the only way to put an end to candidates and their parties utilising these tactics to secure a win, is to not vote for them. This will ensure they amend their ways as if they mislead you during campaigning, what will they do when elected? For those that love a peek ‘behind the scenes’ of what else happens during elections – think of the ‘b’s. Burnt lips, blisters, and behaviours. Some bad, but in the vast majority, brilliant! And for this MP late on election night, seeking the solace of another ‘b’…a bath! However, storm damage had blocked our drive, and as an extra, blew out our hot water system, more ‘b’s! So not quite what you would expect as part of celebrations! Even though our seat has not been officially declared at time of writing, the message from the majority of residents is clear. They seek respect, and representatives with integrity, credibility, and reliability that put residents’ and

community’s interests first, rather than a party ideology or stance. Noosa worked and fought hard to keep its unique ‘independence’ – and WE DID! I am so proud of this community. The spirit which has seen us through fires and a pandemic, has, through your vote, ensured your voices were heard. And regardless of which ‘colour’ you supported, as an independent MP aligned only to you and this community, you have won in ways that count. And in a very ‘Noosa’ colour, teal! How humbled and honoured I have been with the outpouring of support through this time, and to be given the opportunity to finish what I’ve started – as well to get on with the next priorities! Locally, getting resolution on the inappropriate volume of heavy haulage through our stunning country villages, as well solutions to our housing crisis, which is making it difficult for our residents, as well for businesses that cannot access staff. Pushing through the next stages of the Beckmans upgrade, obtaining funding for the Sports and Wellness Hub, and actions from the feasibility into a Learning Hub are just examples. On the broader scale, continuing to work for more effective systems that meet your expectations, and that the issues you want debated are brought to Chamber. From the latest survey, this includes the sex offenders register being made public, and yes, that great divider, daylight savings. A massive “thank you” to everyone who made this possible – volunteers, campaign workers, the whole ‘Teal Army’ both 2 and 4 legged, and everyone who went to the polls – how appreciative I am of everything you do, have done, and that you aspire to. There are no words, only deep respect and an ongoing commitment to you every day in every way. To be elected again to represent this community in its diversity, passion and, at times, opposing viewpoints is the greatest honour, and a privilege unlike any other. Love Noosa and all who live here? More than you can imagine. Who wouldn’t?!

NS Never one to take her foot off the gas, Kylie Minogue’s big break as a humble car mechanic in Neighbours was perhaps more profound than the show’s casting director could ever have imagined.

Kylie Still spinning around... WORDS: VIOLET WILDER

About to celebrate 35 years as a figurehead for style, stubbornness and star quality, it requires quite some pace to keep up with Kylie.

B

ack in 1986, when 18-year-old Kylie Minogue first appeared on our screens in Neighbours, her character Charlene was the perfect combination of cutesy charm and sass. Audiences worldwide immediately fell head over heels in love with the bubbly, dungarees-wearing tomboy. In an episode screened on 17th April 1986, no-one could possibly have perceived that this pint-sized burglar climbing through the window of Madge Bishop’s house would go on

to become not just one of the world’s most cherished, successful performers, but an icon of modern music; someone whose influence has shaped the lives not just of her fans, but the next generation of music maker. It says a lot for Kylie that at no point has she ever downplayed or dismissed phases of her career. From the bubble-gum hits of the Eighties to euphoric dance anthems to maudlin melancholy in duets with Nick Cave, it has all been part of the process, and it has all led her to where she is today. That is, a 52-year-old who now finally feels in full control of her career, of her future ambitions, and of a past that has flickered between extraordinary success and devastating heartache.

Story: VIOLET WILDER

“I am no different to anyone else in that respect,” she begins. “We all have periods where it seems that everything is with us, then everything is against us. That’s life, I’m afraid, and it doesn’t matter how many world tours you’ve done or the number of records you’ve sold. “Sometimes it has felt really hard to get back up and carry on, but what’s the alternative?” What makes the Melbourne-born singer, producer, actress and TV judge stand out from the crowd though, is that even during those dark periods – the death of Michael Hutchence, scattered other romantic

disappointments, a breast cancer diagnosis, and the fact kids have never come along – is that throughout, unequivocally, unapologetically, Kylie has remained the ultimate popstar. And that evolution continues on today. The release of Disco not only represents a record that harks back to her very foundation of music, but exemplifies the artist’s desire, determination and sense of daring. While 2018’s Golden leant on country and pop numbers, switching back to a firmer dance pop sound exemplifies the actions of someone never afraid to turn on a creative sixpence. continues next page...

“It’s always been a fear of mine to get to a point where I am stuck doing the same thing all the time,” she says. “That’s really a fear for anyone who is tasked with being creative in their career. As a result I’ve always tried to mix it up – sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t, but you’ve got to try, right?!” “I don’t like to praise myself too much, but what I always will give myself credit for is being game enough to try anything; I’ll give anything a shot, but more and more now it’s about being as present and involved as possible; that’s definitely a characteristic of my music nowadays.” “I certainly didn’t have any control back in the early days,” she says, referencing her pop breakthrough as part of the Stock, Aitken and Waterman ‘hit factory’ – the team who wrote many of her formative hits such as I Should Be So Lucky and Got to be Certain. “I did what I was told because that’s what I did in TV… ‘Here are your lines, learn your lines, move on’. So a lot of my first recordings were like that.” By the early Nineties Minogue had tired of saccharine love songs and sought a new musical direction. She signed to Deconstruction Records, a British independent dance label, and released the brooding Confide in Me. This era saw Minogue unleash her darker side, most notably Where the Wild Roses Grow, her surprising collaboration with the legendary Nick Cave. Though artistically satisfying, Minogue’s audience were less than impressed with her new style and following the underwhelming reception to the album Impossible Princess, it was

KYLIE MINOGUE Q&A Q: Your balance of style and sexiness has always been just about right. How have you achieved that? KYLIE: For me, I’ve always found subtlety way sexier than anything outrageous or in your face. That’s just the way I, personally, present myself. I know I have gotten away with certain things in the past, like an Agent Provocateur commercial I did many years ago, which was

12 12

NoosaStyle NoosaStyle

pretty racy; but I think because people know my character, they know that this is done with a bit of a wink and they take it for what it is. Q: More and more these days, we know that the revenue from touring upholds so much of the music industry. Does it amaze you how much it’s changed? KYLIE: Sure, the whole industry is a completely different creature to what it was before. I must say I do miss the days of physical records and the excitement of the charts,

clear that the petite performer had two choices: she could return to her poptastic finest or hang up her microphone for good. Sure enough, the next wave of music post-Millennium – across Spinning Around, On a Night Like This and Can’t Get You out of My Head, had all the swagger and style she has subsequently continued to bring into the new era. Although her Showgirl tour was cut short by a positive breast cancer diagnosis, it did also confirm her rise as a fashion icon, not least in partnerships with John Galliano, Dolce and Gabbana and Swarovski. Post-recovery and back to full fitness, the albums X and Aphrodite and Kiss Me Once saw Kylie step into the role of innovator, producer, and fashion icon, not to mention accomplished musician. And on a romantic level, a private life that had left so so many tears on her pillow, now finds itself enriched with the love she found with Paul Solomons, the Creative Director of GQ in the UK. Although much of Kylie’s life is spent in London, she has never lessened her affection for home. Just last year she was the figurehead of a Tourism Australia campaign to attract more Brits ‘down under’, albeit the global Coronavirus pandemic has put almost all travel on hold. “We are, as creatures, so keen to explore, and this is a frustrating time,” she says. “As a musician, I love moving around for inspiration, but I’m hopeful we’ll find normality again soon… and until then, we all have our music!”

but that is probably a romantic view from then artist side. If you counter that with the ease with which people can now access music and buy records, then I think you have to suppose we are in a better position nowadays. Q: Do you miss touring with the current situation? KYLIE: Hugely. I mean, it is exhausting and it can sometimes feel just so unrelenting, but the thrill of performing in front of people

and feeling that connection is something that I don’t think I could ever replicate in any other way. Q: Do you still get nervous? KYLIE: Oh of course. From the moment I start putting together a set list, the butterflies begin. I do admit it’s a lot easier now because I have a catalogue of music to choose from – on my first tour I didn’t have enough songs to fill the show so I had to choose cover versions and put in distractions! We’ve come a long way!

2020 has been the year from hell for Australia, with fires, floods, drought and the ever-popular Covid-19 virus.

The miracle of nature at work on World Heritage listed Fraser Island... Our annual pilgrimage to Fraser Island in late October, with the Gold Coast Land Rover Owners group, had been uncertain for several months, due to the Covid-19 lockdown on the island, but luckily restrictions were lifted just in time

T

hen we heard about the bushfires on the island and once again things looked dubious. But, luckily they were brought under control and campers were once again allowed back on the Island. So, seven Land Rovers in their many guises, made the trip to Rainbow Beach to meet up at for breakfast at the Servo and top-up our tanks, before heading out to catch the ferry at Inskip Point and begin our week-long adventure. As we cleared the ferry, and started our two-hour drive along 75 Mile Beach to Waddy Point, we didn’t see too much evidence of the fires, although we could smell the faint odour of smoke in the air. Once again, we were in awe of the natural beauty of the world’s largest sand island; the sweeping aqua shoreline and pristine landscape with its ever-changing kaleidoscope of colours, all commensurate with the overall sunlight available at the time of day. And, of course catching a glimpse of Australia’s purest Dingoes. The island offers visitors a plethora of photographic opportunities, from the decomposing hull of the SS Maheno on the beach near Eli Creek, to dramatic sand-blows and serene freshwater, perched lakes fed by the underground water table, and vistas of ancient ferns and mammoth trees in the Valley of the Giants, Our first trip on the island was to Sandy Cape Lighthouse, via the unpredictable South Ngala Rocks, where many a novice 4x4 driver has come to be the centre of attention with the gathered onlookers, as they bog in the middle of the circuit. Waiting time can take anything up to a couple of hours, with dozens of cars backed-up on either side of the pass, as assistance is given to retrieve unlucky vehicles from the track. On the following day as we crossed the island to Ocean Lake, we were shocked by the bushfire damage caused to some of the natural landscape of hills and gullies. In some areas there was still undergrowth and fallen trees smouldering. But Mother Nature was in total control - and it was evident in other areas that we came across, that the undergrowth was already sending out roots and new growth was seeking sunlight. The late October storms didn’t make too much difference to the dry conditions on the island and fire bans are still in place. There has been another flare-up - but once again the power of nature has made adjustments to rectify the situation. Fraser Island welcomes visitors young and mature, with its mixed and varied accommodation options, from homes and units, motel style or more rustic; as well as designated camping areas for sensible 4x4 drivers and responsible campers. Whether you come for the natural beauty of the island, the incredible fishing, for a romanic getaway - or to experience total relaxation, there is the perfect location just for you. WEAVING A TALE OF

Raffia... The lowdown on one of the world's finest natural fibres... Both in contrast and respect to its humble roots in traditional Madagascan craft and culture, raffia offers an exclusive temptation in the world of fashion today. A natural fibre owing its distinctive aesthetic to the fronds of the raffia palm, its growth is limited to certain tropical regions of the world - most notably and in its highest grade from Madagascar. The Raffia Appeal Raffia is natural, easy to dye, soft to the touch and gentle on skin, yet irresistibly textural and highly durable. Handcrocheted using old-world techniques, its naturalistic appearance and feel makes it an appealing fibre for designers and craftspeople the world over to work with. Sustainability of Raffia When harvested responsibly, raffia is an incredibly sustainable material. Pruning leaves at a minimum of 1.2 metres , ensures that the growth and health of the palm is preserved. Unfortunately, the fatal cutting of these trees is still needlessly practiced in some places. Paper Imitations As the popularity of natural fibres like raffia continue to trend, imitations made from cheap paper or straw materials have been introduced to the market. Products made with paper attempt to capture the naturalistic finish of raffia at the cost of sustainability and durability.

Sunshine Coast woman, Maria Faalafi’s search for sustainable and chemical free products to manage her own health- has led to her creating a new online marketplace as a one-stop-shop for consumers like her.

A

round 10 years ago, Maria was an engineer drafter living a busy life. But in her twenties, out of nowhere she started feeling unwell, getting severe migraines, and experienced rapid weight loss, blurry vison, dizziness, chronic fatigue and digestive issues that led to anxiety and depression. While her friends were out partying and building their careers, Maria felt so ill she could barely get out of bed. While her medical team tried to determine her condition, Maria decided to remove any unnecessary chemicals in her life, including chemically loaded household and beauty products, and replaced unhealthy foods with organic, natural foods packed with nutrients. Eventually Maria was diagnosed with several food allergies and reactive hypoglycaemia, a disease unknown to many medical professionals and forgotten about in many textbooks. Her lifestyle changes helped her manage the diagnosis, but also inspired a change in her stressful career. She also found a passion for helping others live healthier, more sustainable lives.

One woman’s quest for a healthier lifestyle

Over the past 10 years, Maria and her husband ran a successful kitchen hire business and an organic cafe in West End, Brisbane called Green Bees Organics. After becoming a mum, Maria decided to sell the businesses and concentrate on motherhood. While online shopping (to avoid shopping centre tantrums), Maria soon discovered that finding eco-friendly products was not only time consuming, but also expensive, as she would pay multiple shipping costs when buying products from multiple websites. As a solution, Maria started Eco Marketplace, a one-stop shop for ecoconscious consumers looking for all natural eco-friendly products. “When I was first looking for eco products I’d be scrolling website upon website, eBay and Amazon - and found it hard to find what I needed. I wanted to find products that were good for me, my family and the environment,” Maria said. “I decided I didn’t want to sell my own products, but I wanted to help other businesses doing the ‘right thing’ through one channel, making eco products more easily accessible and affordable. That’s how I came to the idea of ECO Marketplace.”

ECO Marketplace now boasts over 700 eco products from 45 merchants, with new merchants signing up every day. Not every business can list their products though; they must pass a criteria to show they are eco-friendly. “Another reason ECO Marketplace is a great tool for people to live more sustainable lives or to eat more organically, is that I’ve done the hard work for them in determining if the product is eco-friendly or not,” Maria said. “Each vendor must pass a selection criteria that ensures all products are never tested on animals, are environmentally friendly, have no synthetic fragrances and are non-toxic.” Products on ECO Marketplace vary from gifts to fashion, homewares, healthy treats and even natural pet products. The site also allows for eco gift hampers or gift registries for special occasions. Products range from the quirky to the healthy, such as 100% Sustainable Seed Pencils – once the pencil is used, it is planted to grow anything from basil to sunflowers - Essential Oil Crystal Gemstone Roller Bottles, zero waste beauty products, books and MYO bundles. For more information on ECO Marketplace visit www.ecomarketplace.com.au.

LITTLE WHITE LIES

BOYS CLOTHING -Shorts -Shirts -Rompers

Hilarious fibs parents tell their kids...

GIRLS CLOTHING -Skirts -Dresses -Rompers

A

sk any parent - keeping your young ones in check is a tough task. And yet, the process is often made considerably easier with the clever use of some truth-bending.

BIRTHDAY OUTFITS -First Birthdays -Cake Smash Outfits

A recent study found that a parent will tell over 3,000 fibs throughout the process of elevating their child into adulthood, either in protecting them from the truth, in not knowing an answer, or just wanting a quiet life!

COSTUMES -Alice in Wonderland -Tinkerbell -Wiggles

HERE ARE SOME CLASSIC LITTLE WHITE LIES THAT EVERY PARENT WILL BE ABLE TO RELATE TO:

Professionally handmade in Australia

“If the wind blows you’ll stay like that” – an effective way to stop kids pulling silly faces “If you don’t brush your teeth they’ll all fall out” – perfect dental hygiene ploy “Your eyes will go square” – the classic incentive to move away from the telly “Eat your greens or you won’t grow up strong” – a produce-themed exaggeration “Unless you share you’ll have no friends” – harsh but (un)fair, and probably untrue “When the ice cream van plays his tune it means he’s run out” – mean, just mean! Add in various threats that bad behaviour may lead to kids being sent away, parents going to jail, or the small matter of the world ending, and it’s incredible that our nippers even make it to adulthood in one piece. It’s believed that around the age of eight kids stop believing everything they are told… probably because so many of those naysayer naughties never came true in the first place! And yet when it comes to little white lies, it’s not always parents trying to pull the wool over their youngsters’ eyes. The best piece of advice of them all – you know, that festive one – is truly a warning that needs to be heeded, because Santa really does know if they’ve been bad or good…!

They expanded their popular La Vida Seafood Restaurant by incorporating a new high-end private dining room in the adjoining property. Creating La Vida Privato offering diners a whole new level of opulence in dining.

When Tasmanians, award-winning, Restaurateur and Head Chef Nicholas Hooper and wife Sarah Graham-Hooper, made their ’sea to sea’ change from Launceston to Noosa, to become the new owners of the long-running restaurant La Vida on Hastings Street 12 months ago, they brought with them a vast knowledge of the food industry. Nicholas and Sarah were the owners of award-winning Novaro’s Restaurant in Launceston; and winners of the prestigious Best Italian Restaurant in the Tasmanian Hospitality Awards in 2019.

From the moment you step inside, to the welcoming muted glow of the dining room, you will feel special. And, from the initial presentation of your Amuse Bouche to the final dessert course, you will be taken on a culinary adventure, where your palate will be tickled and tantalised by a collection of flavours, textures and inspiration - that will be remembered long after the evening has concluded.

Covid-19 threw 'a spanner in the works’ for all restaurateurs in the region this year, but Nicholas and Sarah didn’t let that slow them down. When the opportunity arose to expand their restaurant into the vacant jewellery store next door, they took

The stunning refurbishment with its muted tones and quality fittings creates a perfect backdrop for the ultimate dining experience. La Vida Privato radiates a moody, luxurious space for ten adult guests or less, offering diners an intimate experience, complete with a stunning, seven-course degustation menu showcasing the highest quality local and Tasmanian produce. Each course perfectly complemented by premium Tasmanian, Australian and international wines and presented by your own private waiter. The tantalising curated menu delights may include dishes such as Seared Tasmanian Scallop, limoncello foam, lardo and spring herbs presented with a 2017 Jones Road Pinot Gris from the Mornington Peninsula; or Lamb Belly, Tasmanian truffle porcini jus, smoked potato puree and marinated Huon Valley mushrooms, perfectly matched with a 2015 Cote D’orcia Chianti Gineprone, Montalcino, Italy. Perhaps you’ll finish with the delectable Chocolate Marquis, raspberry mousse and espresso jelly, the a 2018 Frogmore Creek Iced Riesling from Coal Valley in Tasmania. Nick will be constantly changing his menu to showcase the best produce available each season. Together, Nicholas and Sarah have created the perfect seafood experience for their valued customers, with their dual dining concepts. Whether it be in their La Vida Seafood Restaurant, which offers diners a casual relaxed, al fresco dining experience, with a menu that showcases local and Tasmanian seafood and dining favourites that suit the whole family, as well as intimate couples dining. The perfect venue for a light lunch after your morning swim, or a meeting spot to catch up with friends and family, and enjoy a fabulous dinner under the stars.

Seasonal delights... Loving this time of year when all our fresh food markets are stocked with wonderful seasonal vegetables and fruits. The ones that add colour and flamboyance to our kitchen creations - and make our al fresco entertaining platters look sensational. It's the easiest time of the year to make fuss-free salads, vegetarian delights, bbq sides and glorious fresh fruit salads to lavish with cream as a finishing touch. And, I'm pretty sure there isn't a home or balcony that hasn't added a vegetable garden during our long, Corona isolations and the new 'normal' working from home. This season's perfect picks are: Artichokes - rich and round Asparagus - tall and lean Strawberries - plump and perfumed Zucchini - flowers and all Fancy lettuces and aromatic herbs - sourced from your own vege garden Corn - swathed in melted butter and spices Pumpkin - roasted versalitity Check out our recipes for some tempting ideas.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE A quickfire guide to knowing your spices

S

pices are about so much more than heat. They provide colour, texture, flavour, aroma and more hidden pizazz than you would expect. The trick, when it comes to adding them to your food, is to choose those that complement your dish. Bitter Think of coffee, chocolate and beer, and you’ll know we have a love/hate relationship with bitterness. From bay leaf to clove, horseradish to marjoram, peppercorns to turmeric, a bitter flavour is great for hearty foods such as roasts and stews, where spices creep in without overpowering the dish.

58

NoosaStyle

Salty Salty spices actually provide a sensible and health-focused alternative to sodium chloride. Consider paprika, cumin, onion powder and oregano as the perfect seasoners, and revel in spicy goodness without the negative side-effects. Sour The ability for sour spices to make our mouths water works perfectly when we match them with sweet foods. Limited in quantity – the key sour spices are amchur, sumac and tamarind – they are powerful and purposeful with desserts and sauces especially. Sweet From carraway to fennel, nutmeg to sesame seeds, our love of sweet spices is something that means firm meats such as pork and poultry can be softened, while sour flavours in cheese can really be brought out with a dash of sugar-like life. And one for luck – umami, the cool younger brother of the spice world, boasting a savoury, meaty, seaweed flavour that bucks all the negative connotations of MSG despite using the same molecule, an amino acid called glutamate. Of course, true aficionados will point out that limiting the range to just four or five varieties is doing spices a disservice. They will note a number of cooling, floral, earthy, pungent, nutty and woody variations, but as a starting point for understanding these most excellent essences, you’ve got more than enough umming, ahing, wincing and reaching for water to be getting on with!

JO'S PESTO

LOCAL COOKED PRAWNS/ OYSTERS & FISH LARGE SELECTION OF FRESH SEAFOOD SALADS & SEAFOOD PLATTERS

Makes 1 x 400-ml/14-fl oz (US 12-fl oz) jar

I

t is not every day you meet someone who simultaneously makes you want to sit down and talk to them for hours, and also leap on the first train home, run to the vegetable garden and start making dinner. Jo, whom I met at the Barbican performing arts centre in London, is just such a person. She grows vegetables with such passion and energy, despite the limited space at her disposal. This pesto is completely seasonal. Make it using whatever leafy greens you have, at any time of year. You can even use beetroot tops (beet greens) too. The only rule is to make sure the leaves are as young and tender as possible – otherwise you will be chewing for days. Preparation: 10 minutes 80 g/3 oz (2–3 cups) green leaves, such as soft herbs, sorrel and Swiss chard in the summer; rocket (arugula), kale, parsley and Asian greens in the winter 50 g/2 oz (cup) pumpkin seeds 3 cloves garlic, very finely chopped 40g/1½ oz (½ cup) grated Parmesan cheese 120ml/4 fl oz (½ cup) extra virgin olive oil salt and pepper Method Place the leaves (greens) and pumpkin seeds into the bowl of a food processor and pulse a few times until coarsely chopped. Add the garlic and Parmesan and pulse a few more times. Scrape down the sides of the food processor with a rubber spatula. Add the olive oil slowly, while the processor is running, occasionally stopping it to scrape down the sides with the spatula. Stop when everything is evenly amalgamated and you have a thick, glossy, vibrant green sauce. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Spoon into a warm, sterilized glass jar (see page 234), pour a little more oil over the top and seal immediately. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks (or freeze in ice-cube trays).

I didn't know this... and to think all these years I've only been making salads with the cucumbers...

On the farm WHAT’S FRESH ON THE PLATE

Cucumbers...

FACTS OF THE DAY ....

60

NoosaStyle

1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc. 2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours. 3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance. 4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area. 5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!! 6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!! 7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation.

8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water. 9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone! 10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams. 11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemicals will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath. 12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your taps, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean. 13.Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!! Pass this along to everybody you know who is looking for better and safer ways to solve life's everyday problems

This universal flavour is made from a unique blend of aromatic herbs and spices that is perfect for grilling, and low and slow BBQ cooking. The versatile flavour complements all dishes and is delicious on meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables. Barbeque expert, Nathan Roberts from Basting Bros BBQ says, “One of the most common questions asked by those new to BBQ cooking is on the time and temperature required to cook. The answer is that you have to go by ‘doneness’ of the protein you are cooking. No two cuts will ever cook exactly the same. Here, Roberts shares his top tips to help you master the art of barbequing; 1. Cook to doneness, don't try and go by time/temperature. Use a digital thermometer as a guide only, especially for bigger cuts of meat. You want bigger cuts to feel like you are probing butter with a warm skewer or knife. 2. Resting meat is one of the most important things that people can do when cooking BBQ. Usually with bigger cuts of meat you need to rest them for a minimum of two hours after you have finished cooking and with smaller cuts like steak, allow 10 mins. 3. When selecting a steak, don't always go for the cheapest option. Select the best that you can within your budget. Remember that a thinner cut will cook quicker and give you less room for error during the cooking process. I recommend a minimum thickness of 1½ to 2 inches. 4. No matter what fuel source you are using always make sure that you are cooking over a consistent temperature inside the cooking chamber. 5. I recommend using oil as a binder only, then patting your dry rub after application. Using an oil with a high smoke point such as Grape seed, rice bran or peanut, will serve you well. 6. Before cooking it's important to work out what spices, otherwise known as a dry rub, you are going to use with your protein that you're cooking. Sweet and savoury pairs well with pork like the Char-Griller Ribs & Pork dry rub. Bold, pepper flavour profiles work great with beef like the Char-Griller Brisket & Beef rub. You may even want to consider layering the dry rubs with light coating of the Char-Griller All Purpose Rub, then the dry rub matching your protein. Char-Griller BBQ Rubs are suitable for vegans and vegetarians and are free from genetically modified materials. The Brisket and Beef Rub and Ribs and Pork Rub are both gluten free. Char-Griller BBQ Rubs are available from Bunnings stores nationally.

32-1 Low ‘n’ Slow BBQ Pork Ribs Serves: 4-8 Prep Time: 20 min Cook Time: 6 hours Ingredients: 4 Pork Ribs (Baby Back or St Louis Cut) Char-Griller Pork and Rib Rub 400mL Char-Griller Smoky BBQ Sauce / BBQ Sauce of your choice Vegetable/Canola Oil to rub Equipment: Heavy duty foil Thermometer Reversible Rib Rack Char-Griller Lump Wood Charcoal Basting Brush Method: 1. Using Char-Griller Lump Wood Charcoal prepare pit/off set and preheat to 220°F (105°C). Add hickory chips/chunks. (If using a cera mic smoker, leave deflector stone attached). 2. To prepare ribs, pat dry with a paper towel and trim excess fat. To remove the membrane that covers the bone side of ribs, use a paper towel to gently scrape the corner edge near bones to lift membrane. Peel back and continue to remove entirely. 3. Use a small amount of oil and

rub over both sides of the rib (this will help the rub stick to the surface). 4. Apply Char-Griller Rib and Pork Rub by shaking over ribs, making sure to evenly coat both sides. 5. Once grill is heated, place ribs in a BBQ Buddy Reversible Rib Rack and position on the grill of your smoker. A drip tray can be placed underneath to catch any fats and liquids. 6. Set up your Thermometer and insert probe into the meaty part of ribs to monitor temperature during cook. 7. Cook for 3 hours, ensuring constant temperature is maintained. 8. After 3 hours, internal temperature of ribs should be between 160-170°F (71-77°C). If not, cook for a bit longer until desired temperature is reached. Remove ribs and place on pre-cut heavy-duty foil. Baste with BBQ sauce, tightly wrap and place back on grill to cook for a further 2 hours. 9. After 2 hours, open foil and baste ribs in additional sauce. Place ribs back on grill and cook for additional 1 hour or until internal temperature reaches 195°F (91°C). 10. Baste with additional BBQ sauce before serving. Enjoy! Char-Griller Rib and Pork Rub is also suitable for use on pork butts and whole pork shoulders.

BEETROOT HUMMUS Serves 4

H

ummus made entirely from chickpeas is one of the great loves of my life, but even I recognise the need to change things up a little from time to time. This recipe is the answer. Not only do you get a new flavour, the colour is incredible too. A dish of this beetroot hummus looks stunning alongside a plate of raw vegetables - and will keep you going while you wait for lunch, ideally with a glass of champagne. Note that this is good made with carrots as well. My friend Henry Witheridge – another great gardener – recently introduced me to split pea hummus too. Another exciting addition to the hummus repertoire. PREPARATION: 10 minutes, plus cooling

COOKING: 45–60 minutes 1 Large raw beetroot (beet) (about 225 g/8 oz) 3 Tablespoons olive oil 1 x 400-g/14-oz can chickpeas, drained and rinsed 1 Tablespoon lemon juice 2 Cloves garlic, crushed (minced) 2 Tablespoons tahini salt and pepper raw vegetables, to serve (optional) Preheat the oven: 180°C/350°F/Gas Mark 4. Trim the beetroot (beet) and peel the root. Cut into 3-cm/ 1¼-inch cubes. Wrap the beetroot cubes in aluminium foil with 1 tablespoon of the oil. Bake for 45–60 minutes until soft, then remove from the aluminium foil, put into a bowl and let cool. Put the cooled beetroot into a food processor with 1 tablespoon of the oil, the chickpeas, lemon juice, garlic and tahini and process until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to a bowl and pour over the remaining oil. Serve with raw vegetables, if desired.

There is no better taste in the world, than freshly caught Australian fish - straight from the pristine waters to your plate. And, it’s this philosophy which is shared by their amazing Head Chef Alex King, whose prestigious cooking career started off in Canberra - in hatted-restaurants, such as Courgette and Mezzalira, before becoming Sous Chef at Artespresso, working under the guidance of Fish Face alumni, Mick Chatto, that his affinity for seafood began. . . . y a d r u o y x o t e D Before you get too excited about a crazy new fad detox diet, I want to stop you here. Detoxing our day isn’t just about diets. Detoxing your day is all about making better choices. Choosing better food, spending less time on social media and using technology, decreasing our exposure to chemicals and creating a positive mindset.

Self Love We know we are our own worst critics. However, we still continue to pick ourselves apart and put ourselves down. •Show gratitude. If you cannot show it, at least feel grateful. Think of 3 things each day you are grateful for. Is the sun shining? Was the petrol station attendant friendly? There are dozens of things for which you can be grateful each day. You just need to find them. •Compliment a friend or smile at a stranger. It feels SO good! •Eat food that makes you feel good on the inside. You will wake up happier in the morning when you

66

NoosaStyle

know that you have nourished your body the night before. •Ditch the scales. Please! You are not defined by a number. Be mindful of becoming better, fitter, healthier and stronger. Not weighing a certain number. If you like to track progress use clothing or measurements as a guide. Chemical Awareness There are hundreds, if not thousands of chemicals lurking in everything in our homes. My biggest ‘WOW’ moment for was when I found out that the average woman covers herself in over 200 chemicals before 8:30am in the morning. 26 seconds after exposure, chemicals can be found in measurable amounts in the human body. •Swapping deodorant and perfume out for less toxic alternatives. Young Living has some wonderful products to switch to. •A simple swap for Gumption paste is 2 tablespoons of filtered water and 2 tablespoons of bicarbonate soda. Adding orange or lemon essential oils also gives it a real boost. •To make foaming hand soap you will need: a foaming hand soap dispenser, 30ml of liquid castile soap, distilled water, and 10 drops essential oil of your choice. There are hundreds of low tox

DIY cleaning and personal product recipes at www.theinspiredlittlepot.com.au. My favorite cleaning product is hands-down Thieves Cleaning Concentrate. We use it in every room of our house.

Food Savvy Making better choices doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Small changes are still changes! •Drink more water. At least 2 litres of plain, filtered water each day. •Swap out a few items in your day. Dark chocolate instead of milk, a bliss ball instead of a cake, almond meal or organic flour instead of bleached white flour. •Eat a meat free meal twice a week. Give your body and digestive system a break. •Be drink savvy. If you are out and alcohol is part of your occasion then add ice, have a glass of water in between, drink sparkling water with lemon or lime wedges in between rounds. •Eat more basic food. Nuts and seeds, veggies and fruit, eggs and seafood. The more you fill up on nutritious food the less room you have for unhealthy choices. This goes back to loving yourself. Feed your body well and you will feel better within yourself. Don’t treat your body like a rubbish bin. Technology Detox We cannot escape technology, so

we must be vigilant in limiting our time exposed to it. •Put your phone away at least an hour before you plan to go to sleep. •Leave your phone in the kitchen at night or avoid looking at it as soon as you wake. Your day is yours to embrace and nobody else’s. Starting your day seeing what everyone else in the world is doing is not starting your day practicing being mindful. Wake and be present in your surroundings and enjoy a stretch or a nice drink of water. •Set your phone to silent during dinner, family time and other events. Unless calls are important, most can be returned later without fuss. Having so much interruption is subconsciously very unsettling. •Delete apps from your phone you know are ‘time wasters.’ So there you have it. Loads of tips to help you each day to make better choices and live a healthier and happier life. Merry Christmas to all and remember to start your festivities with a glass of water and some good food choices. You can always end with the wine. his new tipple is rich and robust with notes of roasted grain, stone fruit, toasted pecan, milk chocolate and has a bold, dry finish. In fact, the Westward Whiskey Stout Cask received a Gold Medal at the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Westward pursues perfection through its philosophy of Minimalist Distilling, a crucial difference in an industry driven by the principle of mass efficiency, by going to great lengths to bring out the flavor of its grain and other natural ingredients. For this new addition, they begin by brewing a delicious American pale ale, from scratch, using locally malted barley, ale yeast, and a slow, low temperature fermentation. The fresh beer is then distilled twice in custom pot stills designed to create a bold, robust spirit before entering lightly toasted American Oak barrels barrel at a relatively low proof. The whiskey is aged to taste in Portland, where the region's hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters are the ideal environment to raise a world class single malt whiskey. Finally, select Westward barrels are further finished for up to one year in fresh stout casks - to create Westward Oregon Stout Cask. Imported and distributed by Think Spirits in Australia, Westward Whiskey Stout Cask is now available at For more information, visit . ABV: 90 proof (45% ABV) RRP: $150

ow more than ever, people look forward to their wind-down moments at the end of each day. A moment to sit back, relax, savour and enjoy. Whilst restrictions mean most Australians can't travel at the moment, Pampelle – the world's first ruby red grapefruit aperitif – is bringing the French Riviera and the relaxed holiday vibes to your summer drinks. Perfectly versatile to use from refreshing Pampelle & Tonic to 'Summer' Pampelle Spritzes to Pampelle Negronis, Pampelle gives a unique holiday feeling with every sip. Crafted on the banks of the River Charente in the Cognac region of France, Pampelle is an artisanal, versatile aperitif capturing the bittersweet essences of the Ruby Red Grapefruit.

With a relatively low 15% ABV and 30% naturally lower in sugar than other leading aperitifs, Pampelle is a complex spirit served simply, focussing on the deep flavours of its natural ingredients.

No matter how you enjoy Pampelle, every sip is guaranteed to make you feel like it's Summertime, anytime!

The hand-picked Star Ruby Red Grapefruits are distilled three ways - to make a distinctive and unique flavour profile. First, the grapefruits are halved and macerated until full extraction occurs. Then, to enhance the natural citrus aromas, fresh peels are macerated and distilled in copper. The rubies are then pressed and reduced until they become a deep, velvety red, giving its distinct colour. The distilled grapefruits are then combined with an artisanal infusion of natural botanicals, macerated citrus peels, and Pampelle's signature Eau-de-Vie, made from grapes that have been fermented and distilled through column stills.

How Ducks are Being Used to Keep Your Favourite Wines Organic... By Richard Angove, 5th Generation Winemaker of Angove Organic

S

ubhead: Angove Family Winemakers, Australia’s number one organic winery, is leading the way in Certified Organic and sustainable winemaking, where all family members – even the feathered ones - are involved in the success of the company. What is the first thing you think of when you hear ‘organic wine’? I’m guessing it’s not ducks. However, at Angove Family Winemakers our regular ‘Employees of the Month’ are a flock of Indian Runner ducks who work alongside our staff to help ensure that our wines maintain their certified organic status.

Shirl the Pearl Brookie’s Cumquat Gin

E

ddie Brook, co-founder and distiller at Cape Byron Distillery, was inspired by his Grandma Shirl’s notorious cumquat gin recipe. Back in the day, Shirl used cumquats from her own tree to creat her bootleg gin - that was famously cracked open at parties. Shirl the Pearl as she was lovingly called, was a pocket rocket, standing just 4ft 11 inches, with a mop of curly hair, which turned completely white by the age of 25 yrs. Shirl was an adventurer, skier and one of Australia’s first female Tiger Moth pilots. She also knew her way around a bottle of gin.

What a fitting tribute.

S

hirl the Pearl is a bright and citrusy spirit, which pairs the natural acidity and mild bitterness of Australian cumquats with the unique flavour profile of Brookie’s Byron Dry Gin. With bright notes of orange blossom, mandarin and marmalade, you can shake up a citrusy sour, enjoy it in a Breakfast Martini, Spritz or a Negroni. This is a gin that you’ll be jumping to add to your drinks cart or bar. Time to ignite your ‘inner Shirl’.

For wine to be considered Certified Organic it has to adhere to rigorous standards of organic protocol - part of which is to make sure that we use no synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides or herbicides in our winemaking process. These rules present organic winemakers with a particular challenge - finding natural, nonchemical ways of dealing with pests in the vineyard. At Angove Organic, we use Indian Runner ducks in our Warboys Vineyard to control the snails that make their way into the vine canopy and munch on the grapes. Before the ducks came along, we had to manually remove all pests. During one growing season, our human team had removed more than 400kg of snails, by hand! Since then, the addition of the ducks have delighted both staff and guests. The Indian Runner Ducks waddling

out of their specially designed ‘Duck hotel’ every morning brings a smile to all our visitor’s faces, while also playing an essential role in the ecosystem of our vineyard. The Angove Certified Organic range is one hundred percent Certified Organic, handcrafted, and vegan friendly. Our award-winning wines are made with the gentlest touch and minimal inputs, sourcing our premium grapes from our vineyards throughout McLaren Vale and the Riverland. We have been a family owned business for over 134 years, five generations, and have been the number one Organic wine brand in Australia for the past 3 years. The human team at Angove Family Winemakers also have a hand in the success of the company, contributing to our status as one of the world’s leading sustainable wine brands. As part of our commitment to ecological and sustainable practices, we have introduced drip irrigation, water tank installation, vine mulching and reusing winery water to fuel a wool planted with native species. For more information go to: https://angove.com.au.

Angove Organic Rose Delicate pink with strawberry, blueberry and crunchy watermelon aromas with a hint of apple. The palate is crisp and clean with abundant strawberry and red berry characters. Angove Organic Pinot Grigio Delicate floral overtones with green apples, lemon rind and grapefruit. The palate shows flavours of pear and peach with grapefruit and granny smith apples. Angove Organic Shiraz Deep red and purple hues. This earthy wine has a mixed aroma of raspberry, cherry and spice for a soft finish. Angove Organic Sauvignon Blanc With a tropical aroma and delicate herbal notes,

the appealing palate lures the senses further with tropical fruit characters for a clean and fresh finish. Angove Organic Chardonnay White peach, citrus, and melon flavours combine with savoury flavours on the nose that give this wine a pleasing texture with a clean finish on the palate.

BLACKBERRY TARTS When I was growing up an ugly little berry tart with a touch of whipped cream was a treat my brothers and sisters and I all loved. Baking doesn’t always have to be precise and perfect. Sometimes just throwing everything together in a rough little pastry can be good for the soul. Author: Adam Liaw Makes: 12 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes / X hours Chilling/freezing time: 20 minutes Level of difficulty: easy Ingredients 2 punnets fresh

blackberries 2 tbsp caster sugar 1½ tbsp cornflour 300ml thickened cream, to serve Shortcrust pastry 250 g plain flour 65 g caster sugar 125 g very cold unsalted butter 1 egg yolk Method To make the pastry, combine the flour and sugar in a large bowl. Working quickly, grate the butter into the bowl and rub the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolk and, if necessary, a teaspoon or two of cold water to bring the dough together. Push a small amount of dough into

each hole of a muffin pan and around the sides to line it evenly. Refrigerate for 20 minutes until firm. Place the berries into a bowl and stir in the caster sugar. Lightly crush with the berries and stir through the cornflour. Spoon the mixture into the tart cases, then place in the oven for 30 minutes or until pastry is golden. Allow to cool. Pour the cream into a large jar of at least 450 ml capacity. When ready to serve shake the jar for about 5 minutes until the cream is aerated and “whipped”. Serve the picnic tarts with the cream.

mall towns are at the heart of regional Australian life. The worst bushfires Australia had seen in a century devastated many of these areas over the 2019-20 summer, affecting lives and livelihoods. In his new series Adam Liaw’s Roadtrip for Good, the popular cook, author and TV presenter visits the bushfire-affected regions as they spring back to life. Over four episodes, Adam unearths some of the best food Australia has to offer, making mouth-watering Asian-inspired dishes with the produce he collects along the way. He meets with locals and discovers that these resilient communities are rebuilding and ready to welcome visitors back with open arms. Adam kicks off his roadtrip in South Australia’s Kangaroo Island. When the bushfires hit, half the island went up in flames. Volunteer firefighter and garlic farmer, Shane Leahy, lost everything except his one shed of garlic. There he also meets organic honey producer, Peter Davis, who lost over 500 hives in one day. After collecting some of Shane’s garlic cloves and Peter’s honey gold, Adam makes two Chinese classics - sizzling Garlic Butter Prawns and Honey Chicken. Adam’s journey continues to the Adelaide Hills where he grew up to visit his old friend and cheesemaker Sheree Sullivan, who lost nearly $2million worth of her award-winning cheeses in the bushfires. Onto Tallangatta in Victorian high country to visit Mandy Crispin’s bakery, which provided refuge to those evacuated during the fires. Adam also journeys to NSW to visit the historic village of Berrima in the Southern Highlands, Gary Rodeley’s famous South Coast oyster farm in Tathra and the coastal town of Ulladulla, home to Cupitt’s Estate, a vineyard that avoided the blaze but lost all its grapes to smoke taint. With their locally sourced ingredients, he whips up Peking Pork Ribs, Sichuan Beer Duck and a hawker-style Oyster Omelette. The last stop is Australia’s apple capital, the NSW town of Batlow, which was considered undefendable in the face of the devastating fires before the local Country Fire Service took it upon themselves to defend their town. “Pets are for many people totally part of the family and they would like to travel and share the experience with their favourite pets.” Said Micheal Green, General Manager of the Mary Valley Rattler. “We have had many requests from potential passengers asking whether they can bring their dogs. Naturally we’ve allowed passengers with Guide Dogs to travel on the Rattler and everyone has been supportive, so extending the opportunity to other passengers to bring along a well-behaved pet was a logical evolution. “It is part of our philosophy of making the Rattler available to everyone in the community. Earlier this month we launched an allaccess carriage that was specially designed to facilitate wheelchair passengers and that has attracted a flood of bookings. We believe our pet-friendly facilities will also encourage greater inclusion and participation amongst the community.” The Mary Valley Rattler operates a range of services across the week from Gympie Station to Amamoor in the Mary Valley. The three hour journeys capture the beauty and history of the rich agricultural – and former gold mining – region from the comfort of beautifully restored heritage carriages. The pricing for passengers is that same as the regular service and

Q

ueensland’s famed Mary Valley Rattler steam train has gone out of its way to make access available to everyone, and is now extending the commitment further by introducing a new ‘Pets On Board’ service, allowing passengers to share the experience with their favourite fourlegged friend. The service launched today with one of the Sunshine Coast’s most special dogs on board to celebrate the special day – Bear, an Australian Koolie. Bear is part of a team at the Detection Dogs for Conservation Centre at the University of the Sunshine Coast (which is supported by the International Fund for Animal Welfare), and is trained to detect live koalas through the scent of their fur. Bear’s obsessive enthusiasm has not always been appreciated. He was surrendered by his previous owners, whose small flat proved too confining for such an active dog, and he began destroying property. After relocating to USC, Bear has put his energy to positive use in the great outdoors, playing an important role during the 2019 bushfires to help locate koalas who were injured, or their habitats were destroyed, to allow them to be rescued, treated and rehabilitated. Recognising that dogs are playing an increasingly important role in the lives of humans, the Rattler has configured a carriage with two segregated booths that can accommodate up to six people per booth with up to two pets per booth from the same family.

$10 per pet cost is applied. Pets can travel on board the Rattler on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday services subject to availability and terms and conditions apply. *The Australian Koolie is a ‘herding dog’, one which has a natural instinct to circle widely round sheep and bring them back to their owner. Koolies are known as silent, upright, working dogs. They are used for herding sheep and also for quiet careful work at close quarters at lambing time. (Source – Wikipedia)

Kenilworth BURSTING WITH LIFE & CHARM

t’s always a good idea to pack an overnight bag when you venture out along the country road to Kenilworth, with thoughts of generous serves of country food swimming around your mind; and dreams of shopping in the cute township - and perhaps deciding to stay overnight and do the same thing all over again the next day.

Above: The real thing... Western clothing for gals & guys imported from the USA Available from: WEST N COLOUR Kenilworth

There’s so much to see and do in the town with its multifaceted array of cute boutiques, cafés, restaurants and bakeries, and of course, the country pub! And throughout the year the town plays host to some great events, a Kenilworth ArtsFest; Cheese, Wine and Food Fest; Sunshine Coast Ukulele Fiesta; Kenilworth Show and Rodeo, Campdraft; Quilt and Craft show and so much more. As I’ve wandered around the township talking to the locals, traders and visitors to the area, one thing has become apparent. The people who come to Kenilworth love the true country feel of a warm welcome, helpful and willing service - and the prospect of one-on-one communication, so lacking in big city shops and venues. The region is also a drawcard for those looking for a true country experience, with a good selection of B&B’s in the area, as well as natural wonderlands for campers to explore and enjoy. And, for those looking for a ‘farm to plate’ experience. On the edge of the shopping precinct, sits the iconic Kenilworth Dairy, Established in 1950, as one of the many rural chefs factories owned by the Kraft Corporation, until in the late 80s, when Kraft moved to centralisation and closed regional factories. At that time, two employees and a local businessman decided that perhaps some of the workers could buy the factory. And they did, renaming it to Kenilworth Country Foods, now Kenilworth Dairies. Now, times have changed - new owner but the dairy is still a local attraction for lovers of fine cheeses, yoghurts and the like. With an onsite café serving fresh lunches, morning and afternoon teas in the undercover entertaining area and surrounding gardens.

For those looking for a bit of ‘back to nature’ here’s the small town of Imbil just up the road offering 4-wheel driving and camping facilities, that have become extremely popular with weekend trekkers and serious drivers. And, just 8 km from Kenilworth, you’ll also find the State Forest that harbours four perfect camping areas. No bookings are required just self registration. 16 km up the road, just below Lake Borumba, is the working Borumba Deer Park, offering a unique family enjoyment and relaxation experience - with friendly hosts. There are modern amenities and BBQ facilities for visitors. In other words, you’ll be glad that I suggested packing that overnight bag, as there’s so much to see and do in and around Kenilworth.

Art Trail SUNSHINE COAST ART TRAIL

ART IS FOOD FOR THE SOUL 2020 has brought a remarkable number of challenges in many ways and yet it has also brought good reasons for re-evaluation and appreciation.

A

t the start of the Covid19 lockdown a caller to ABC radio noted that while many were lamenting the loss of much spectator sport, most people had turned to the arts for enjoyment, solace or discovery. Most of us listened to music, watched films or series and read books. Some took the opportunity to embark on new hobbies, many of which were art or craft based or included such creative endeavours as cooking, gardening or interior decor. Our region has been fortunate in remaining relatively free and while we may not be able to travel overseas or interstate, discovering what is on our own doorsteps has become the new adventure. Here again, visual art has provided renewed entertainment and the plethora of wonderful galleries have been able to re-open....obviously staying Covid safe. There is an easy

way to start your own journey of discovery by looking at the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery Trail. Peruse through the website and design the route for you and remember there are the fabulous public galleries of Noosa Regional (at Tewantin), Caloundra Regional and The Art Gallery at the University of the Sunshine Coast, which have changing programmes and great opportunities for engaging children too. The sculpture collection around the Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanical Garden is also a great picnic spot! The art trail encompasses many areas and so can provide several leisurely days out and about, as art is to be gently savoured. Heading to the hinterland affords wonderful scenic views to whet the appetite for art. The Montville Art Gallery has a terrific range of works from the colourful birds of Patricia Blee to the ever-hilarious Howard William Steer outback vignettes to David Hinchliffe’s evocative, impressionistic urbanscapes. Across the road Illume Creations has eye-catching hand blown glass by Tina Cooper while further down Main Street, Katherine Wood Fine Art displays her contemporary images imparting the vastness of the landscape, in a meditative way. Varied offerings all within a stroll! Maleny is just as eclectic and enticing. Peace of Green co-operative means that visitors get to meet one of the artists each day and can enjoy textile and mosaic pieces as well as paintings and sculpture. David Linton’s passion for hand-crafted furniture is further enhanced by smaller but still high quality items at his gallery, while Maple Street is also home to Maleny Art Direct showing Lindsay Muir’s intricately realistic frogs and snakes in clay, alongside Gary Myers’ uplifting and bright landscapes. Heading out of town towards Landsborough is Art on Cairncross with more remarkable original artworks, from Rex Backhaus-Smith’s unique interpretations of the outback to Ann O’Connor’s fun and fine ceramic figures; from Jim Kinch’s neo-impressionistic sporting scenes to Steve Thompson’s beguiling steampunk sculptures. This is just a mere portion of the Sunshine Coast Art Gallery Trail. Whether your personal tour takes you along the coastal fringe or inland, it is certain that along the way there will be something to capture every individual’s imagination. In these unsettled and unsettling times it is really good to be able to stop and ‘smell the roses’...and appreciate what is around, to bring joy and hope back in to focus. So many lives and livelihoods have been totally disrupted by the pandemic, most notably those of artists across all disciplines. It is a win –win situation therefore, when someone can acquire an original artwork to enrich their own life and provide support for an artist. Art is food for the soul and everyone needs nourishment, especially when it also brings calm or happy distraction or inspiration.... or just joy.

The Art of Observation By Jennifer Dean Noosa Regional Gallery Marketing and Communications Officer

O

bservation is more than seeing. While seeing is the physical act of looking, observation involves a mental process that includes two elements- (a) the sense-perceptual element (visual) and (b) the mental element (thought). Observation involves our drawing upon relevant knowledge or prior experience. Doing so gives significance to that which we have noticed. Visual artist Elysha Rei’s new exhibition, Furusato: Patterns From Pilgrimage features a series of intricate, large-scale hand-cut paper works in the traditional symbolic Japanese style of ‘Kirie’ or paper-cutting. A fastidious, satisfying but unforgiving process says the artist, the symbolism within the work “invites the viewer to probe deeper than the surface.” While retracing her ancestral steps during a recent artist residency in Japan, Rei observed different and distinct patterns on manhole covers in each regional locality she visited. Recording these patterns served to map her journey, but they also served to inspire this new exhibition. “The journey (through Japan) was a life changing experience for me,” says Rei, “I realized my purpose as an artist was to continue the connection with my Japanese heritage, through studying and celebrating the Japanese design aesthetic within my work.” Like Rei, Miriam Innes’ exhibition New York Rambling is also intentioned to draw in the viewer. However, more profound is her intention for audiences to ‘experience’ her work rather than passively observe it. M easur ing more than 25 meters a n d wrapping the entirety of the g a l l e r y Miriam Innes, New York Rambling Panel A 2019, charcoal on Fabriano paper, 150 x 460cm. space, Innes’ large-scale hyper-realistic charcoal sketches seemingly transport the viewer to the iconic City. The complexity of New York’s architectural splendor midst the hustle and bustle of city life is revealed in bold detail. Consulting photographic source material and memory, Innes spent two years completing the work using charcoal- an organic medium reminiscent of the bog oak she drew with as a child growing up in rural Ireland. Miscellaneous Assemblies features extraordinarily intricate fantastical cardboard sculptures that are inherently symbolic. Implying a paradox of fragility and strength, his intricate machines and architectural wonders are presented preserved, like specimens under bell jars. Sitting at the nexus of sculpture and motionography, Agdag describes his works as the mechanical manifestations of his thoughts, ideas and ancestral stories. His meticulously handcrafted stop-motion short film titled Lost Property Office has been the recipient of multiple international awards. Presented within this exhibition, Agdag’s nine minute animation focuses on the forgotten and the obsolete. Bemoans the artist in his observations of modern life; “wouldn’t it be nice if a little bit of care had been taken to create this environment or this machine or this device that we utilize every day for its function.” Through his exhibition Miscellaneous Assemblies, Agdag seeks to rectify this. Are You Having A Good Night? is an exhibition of the language observed in the everyday. Through these new works, Hamer forces us to confront the prevalence of threatening language directed primarily towards women that is too often justified as innocuous. Continuing a long tradition of tactical craftivism, Hamer’s work is a call to arms. Poignant, insightful, witty and cutting, Hamer exposes the understated violence of language. Says the artist, “I wanted this Elysha Rei, Kyoto 2020, hand-cut polymer paper series to reflect the utter everydayness of threats, embedded power, the roles we play in it and the irony and complexity of language. The language we use matters.”

The Art of Queensland Life

J

ive Art has a particular focus on the work of Queensland artists. Gallery Director, Jan Sinclair believes that the light, nature and the lifestyle are reflected in the work of many of our most successful artists. Painters such as Mel Brigg, Anita West and Michael Whitehead have built significant careers over decades to national and international acclaim and all credit the influence of our environment. Artist Mel Brigg notes that being in harmony with his natural environment is at the core of this work. Even, on the odd occasion he has taken to commenting on political or social issues on canvas, somehow the landscape always seems to surface. Anita West’s evocative landscapes depict the joy of her early life in Queensland, riding, camping, swimming and enjoying the freedom of exploring the bushland and beaches of her home. In these formative years her love of the land was nurtured and remains fundamental to her art practice. Abstract artist Michael Whitehead developed his love of bold expressionism from the liberation of riding his mountain bike or beloved Harley through Queensland stunning hinterland regions. The colours, layers and movement of the beach, the bush and the seasons all find their way onto Michael’s canvases. Drop in and explore the best of Queensland art and enjoy the ancient landscapes depicted in the paintings of the Aboriginal artists of the central desert. ART TIMES they are 'a changin'... MORE SO THAN MOST WALKS OF LIFE, ARTS COMMUNITIES HAVE HAD TO ABSORB CHANGE BROUGHT ABOUT BY COVID 19 RESTRICTIONS.

S

ocial distancing has halved theatre, concert, cinema and all other arts attendances. Likewise, state and regional galleries are suffering. Artwise only the ever-awake are making money, top auctioneers are succeeding in cashing in, to the detriment of a large percentage of our historically tagged artists. The major auctioneers now catalogue sales of between one and seventy-five works as opposed to around 350 pre-Covid. They search in the main for paintings that will bring from $20,000 to a millionplus. Because of the restrictions, they hold online auctions with limited previews, with far less cataloguing costs than their pre-Covid large auctions. Well done, well adapted, any businessman would say - staff levels down on the art side of their auctions. Two directors and three curators can handle this easily. The whole art trade, however is suffering because of it. By far, the hardest hit works to be affected by this will be watercolours. At the beginning of the 20th Century, world-class watercolours by artists such as, J.J. Hilder, William Blamire Young, Ben Minns and M.J. McNally - to name just a few.

Ben Minns - ‘The Flower Arranger’ Water Colour

Arthur Streeton “A view of Windsor Castle’ Water colour

And, also the likes of Arthur Streeton, Norman Lindsay, Hans Heysen and many more, who were highly talented in all spheres of painting, drawing and printing. With the exception of their finest or largest works, that rank cash-wise, their works can only find a place (along with more and more paintings from well listed oil painters), to much smaller auctions, where the bigger collectors don't dwell - and preCovid prices are rarely reached. The flipside is that the canny bargain-hunter gets his actual bargain, but they show little return to the vendor, who pays his commission on a work he bought from the last 150 lots in a pre-Covid masters sale. Wealth and technology are changing everything now, all of us have to adjust to thoughts of nothing may be the same again - post Covid! My advice to all collector/buyers - go back to an age when art was a collecting hobby. As always, buy the best quality of an artist, whose works make your heart sing. Forget media twaddle, and academic claptrap. Buy good quality, soothing, mysterious or dynamic works you can fall in love with. Look at them daily and smile.... Leigh Murphy

Scrub life WE TALK TO THE VET... DR NAOMI

.

t.. h g i r Eating When the Coronavirus first reared its ugly head and the world as we knew it changed, everyone expected that all dogs would love having their families home with them. Initially they did, but then many dogs developed a problem - their families were home with them all the time, 24/7.

I

n an ideal world, if a dog is required to spend all day by himself then he would have his needs met before everyone left by combining a mix of exercise for the body, with some brain activities to stimulate their mind – Examples of these will be explained later in this article. A calm dog is a well behaved dog, left on their own without appropriate toys and activities dogs will often resort to doing what dogs naturally like to do - digging, barking and chewing. Your dog does not know that these are not desirable behaviours, to a dog they are perfectly natural.

In fact dogs are just like toddlers, if they do not get enough rest they can get quite cranky. Normally, dogs are left to rest most of the day, but while people are staying at home – and especially families with kids - then many dogs are not getting their much needed rest. As a result they can become hyper aroused by the amount of activity around them. So many families are now starting to see their dog’s behaviour changing. No rest and too much excitement causes a dog to stress and this leads to problem behaviour. Its important to remember, it is natural dog behaviour, it is humans that find it a problem! In the worst case scenario you may even find some very anxious dogs snapping or even biting owners. Have you ever been so tired that you snap at the first person who speaks to you? So what can we do? The good news is there are some very simple steps that can be taken – Firstly allow your dog somewhere that he is not disturbed, that can be his safe place to go. It is also important that you don’t over exercise him, be mindful that the more exercise your dog gets, the more he will need. Some days a short walk where he is allowed to sniff to his hearts content is enough. This is called a sniff walk and will exercise your dog’s brain causing him to be as tired as if he had run for an hour. When dogs are stressed they need calming activities. When a dog experiences long term stress it can cause irreparable psychological damage and cause illness due to the immune system being compromised. Anything your dog can sniff, lick or chew will help relieve

80

NoosaStyle

stress and calm him down. Deer Antlers and Goats horns are available from pet stores, and these can provide hours of chewing for dogs. By far, the best way to calm an anxious dog at meal times is a Kong. Feeding from a bowl is frankly a fairly boring activity so why not stuff his dinner into a Kong and freeze it. Even just scattering your dog’s food out in the yard will keep him entertained for a long while. You could also consider any enrichment activity such as snuffle mats and lick mats which are available from some specialist pet stores and online, just google “canine enrichment”. But many Enrichment activities can simply and easily can be made at home from your recycling. For example take empty toilet rolls and put some treats in them and close off the ends and your dog will have to work to try and find the treat. Similar games can be played with empty boxes, take away containers or empty plastic bottles. And Playing games such as tug, or hide and seek with your dog is a fantastic bonding opportunity for you and your dog. There is a big trend toward buying puppies at the moment. However, puppies grow into dogs and are not disposable. Another issue that will arise from all these new puppies being brought into homes is that they can not attend puppy school or be given socialisation opportunities. The potential result? A generation of dogs with poor socialisation skills and behavioural issues most likely witnessed in the dog parks or at the beach. They are also far more likely to be surrendered to shelters once the Covid 19 crisis passes. However you will find many trainers are hosting online puppy schools and training tips. At Paw & Order Noosa we are hosting virtual consultations and can assist you with Puppy problems or any other canine behavioural issues. Check the website for monthly specials www.pawordernoosa.com.au What is going to happen to your dog once the world gets back to normal and they find themselves all alone again? Unless owners start planning now, dogs are going to find life very stressful and confusing. Owners should leave the dog gradually, for longer each day to condition them to the eventuality of being left alone all day. Many dogs who did not suffer from separation anxiety before will perhaps develop this disorder. Dogs are social animals and consider themselves part of the family. Leaving them alone in the backyard for hours on end is unfair. Solutions to this can be found in doggy day care centres and adventure dog groups. Maybe you have a nice neighbour who would love to keep your dog company while you are out of the house. To find more in depth information in dog behaviour and canine communication please check our website. It is always better to prevent a behaviour issue than to have to rectify it.

“ELEGANT AND SPORTY, EFFICIENT & LIGHTWEIGHT – IT’S A STUNNING SUPERCAR AND CLEAR STATEMENT OF INTENT.

T

he all-new MC20 – MC for Maserati Corse and 20 for 2020, the year of its world première – is Maserati’s first supercar in 15 years. It is powered by the bespoke Nettuno engine, developed 100% by Maserati and featuring patented F1 technology.

Producing a mighty 470kW (630bhp) and 730Nm, the lightweight V6 dispatches 0-100km/h in under 2.9seconds before going on to a top speed of 325km/h. Designed with an eye firmly on the future, the MC20 will also come with a EV powertrain in due course. With assistance from renowned racing chassis builder Dallara, the MC20 features an innovative carbonfibre monocoque, giving the optimum balance between high torsional rigidity and light weight for performance. Unifying the chassis and engine is what we call sculptured engineering – the process of bringing together in perfect harmony the design and engineering aspects of the car with a visual aesthetic that removes the need for overt active aerodynanics, a trend that has longbedevilled the supercar category. One of the most dramatic and unique stylistic effects of the MC20 exterior are its beautiful scenographic butterfly doors, which offer best in class ergomonics ingress / egress. The MC20 is also equipped with an ELatch electronic side door opening system. This innovative feature not only gives the MC20 a technological feel, but further contibutes to the sleek design. Inside, you will find an elegantly minimalist cockpit to focus concentration on the driving experience – yet it retains the luxury and craftmanship that defines a Maserati. A carbonfibre central tunnel and beautifullymilled metallic bezels are further nods to a strong design aesthetic. An 8-speed dual clutch transmission, adjustable suspension, five driving modes – Wet, GT, Sport, Corsa and ESC off – combine to ensure a driving experience like no other. THE LITTLE CAR COMPANY ARE THE WORLD EXPERTS IN PRODUCING EXCEPTIONAL AND AUTHENTIC JUNIOR CARS. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE MOST ELITE CAR MANUFACTURERS, THEY HONOUR THE MOST COVETED CLASSIC VEHICLES IN AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY. THE FIRST CAR CREATED WAS THE BUGATTI BABY II, A 75% SCALE TRIBUTE TO THE ICONIC BUGATTI TYPE 35 AND A FOLLOW UP TO THE 1926 BUGATTI BABY. THE COMPANY HAND BUILDS THE CARS IN THE UK AT ITS BICESTER HERITAGE HQ.

T

he original Bugatti Baby was first created in 1926, when Ettore and his son Jean decided to build a 50% scale version of the Type 35 for Ettore’s youngest son, Roland, for his fourth birthday. However, what had intended to be a oneoff car, had received such positive feedback from customers visiting Molsheim, that Bugatti decided to place the Baby into production - making 500 units between 1927 and 1936. Now, fans of the marque have a chance to own a piece of history with the Bugatti Baby II. The Baby II is based on a digital 3D scan of an original Lyon GP car with identical geometry and suspension, meaning the handling is as authentic as an enthusiast could hope for. The only nod to modernity is the introduction of adjustable dampers, allowing clients to tailor the handling in ways not possible in the Type 35’s heyday. Indeed, the Baby II’s handling was refined at the Prescott Speed Hill Climb course, home of the Bugatti Owners Club, a video of which can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXi7T_qk3Fc Other features which will appeal to enthusiasts include faithful working replicas of the original Type 35’s instruments, with some adaption for modernity. For example the fuel pressure gauge has now become the battery gauge and in a nod to the Bugatti Veyron, the oil gauge has transitioned into a power gauge. The scale replica of the famous four spoke steering wheel now has a quick release to make access to the cockpit easier. The adjustable pedals are machined from solid aluminium billet and proudly display Bugatti’s famous “EB” logo, while the fuel pump handle has been exactly reproduced, but now serves as the forward, neutral and reverse selector. Designed for ages fourteen and above, the fully-electric Bugatti Baby II is larger in size at 75% scale of the original Type 35 and considerably faster than its predecessor, with a 0- 60kph time of just six seconds (dependent on the weight of the driver). In a nod to Bugatti’s modern engineering, the Vitesse and Pur Sang models even come with a ‘Speed Key’, unleashing a top speed of 70kph (42mph) As per the original, just 500 cars will be made.

Alex Harris Principale Noosa4sale

Coming off 18 months of illness from adrenal fatigue and at the age of 50, Alex Harris started as a rookie real estate agent with Ray White.

2104 was about the bottom of the Noosa market,” she says. “Properties had been for sale an average of 1,000 days. It was really challenging trying to get started in a highly competitive environment, trying to convince sellers to trust me over someone who had been selling in Noosa for 20+ years, and then to sell a property that another agent hadn’t been able to sell in 3, or even 5 years of being on market.” But trust Alex they did, and sell those properties she did. Within months she was out-listing and out-selling her colleagues, and competitors. In 2015, just her second year of selling, Alex won the Rate My Agent award, Most Recommended Agent in Noosa. Her client testimonials are heartfelt and full of praise for her hard work, professionalism, and results.

“I make no apology for working for the seller,” she says. “Often a buyer will ask, what’s it worth? I tell them the property is listed for $900,000 for example, because that’s our appraised value. No, c’mon they’ll say, what will buy it? I remind them of the price and say, I am pretty sure that will buy it. As frustrating as that can be to some buyers, my job is to get the best possible result for my seller. And there are just too many occasions that I have achieved sometimes several hundred

86

NoosaStyle

thousand dollars more than other agents’ appraisals, simply because I tried. And the buyer, when an owner, usually remembers who fought the hardest for their seller when it is their time to sell.” For this reason Alex has earned an incredible amount of respect and good will with sellers and buyers alike. Previously an award-winning public relations and media executive, Alex’s experience in marketing and PR is unique among real estate agents in Noosa, and invaluable to clients in achieving their desired result. She runs a high tech operation with everything in the cloud, utilises the best of photographers and videographers in Noosa, is adept at social media marketing, and has to-date sold 10 properties sight unseen. But it has not been easy or plain sailing, with major knee surgery just as she launched her own business, Noosa4Sale, in 2017. A decades old reconstruction needed to be undone for a knee replacement which took more hours than intended, leaving Alex with a tourniquet injury. Three months of intensive physio had her walking without crutches but still unable to bend her right knee beyond 90 degrees. Then the ITB and Patella tendons tore, and she was back on crutches. While undergoing an MRI to determine the cause of tendon damage, the radiographer broke her knee cap, and urgent surgery was performed to repair the kneecap, tendons and knee replacement. She has nothing but praise for her surgeons. So over the course of the first two years of her business, Alex was on crutches, in a brace, and unable to drive for a combined 9 months. Can you imagine? She would show up to do an appraisal or show a property in a taxi, with backpack and crutches, sometimes walking up multiple flights of stairs. More remarkable than the fact she worked all the way through, Alex is allergic to a variety of drugs, including she discovered, all the opioids prescribed for such surgery.

In the three years Noosa4Sale has been operating, Alex has averaged 30 sales per year. The small hand-picked team of experienced support, property management and sales staff has Noosa4Sale punching well above it’s weight. In December 2019, Alex was contracted to manage the brand

new Parkridge Noosa development by Altum Property Group and relocated her office to the commercial precinct there. Alex is running not one, but two agencies: Noosa4Sale and Parkridge Management While not everyone knows Alex for her real estate results, some know her for her incredible personal contribution to the environment, both in Noosa and nationwide, with her creation of and continued management of the national crowdsourced koala mapping project, KoalaTracker.com.au, that celebrated its tenth anniversary this year.

And if you don’t yet know Alex, clearly you should! If you are selling or buying in Noosa, you would be hard pressed to find a more energetic or professional agent to represent you.

Design ideas The Three Birds House 12: Modernising a Home to Suit a Family

U

tilising space, championing storage and building a home fit to last are vital elements to consider for families looking to renovate and modernise their homes. These elements were key when the Three Birds undertook a renovation for two of their audience members, Cath and Sarah and their two sons Chaise and Addison on their latest renovation project called Contemporary Cottage. Situated in the historic town of Windsor, this cottage hosted features that were slightly outdated and didn’t offer the much-needed space for a family whose two boys were growing. Finding ways to open up the internal rooms and make the most of the space within the existing footprint of the home by rethinking spaces and adding interesting niches and secret storage, Erin, Bonnie and Lana were able to transform this tight home into a spacious family retreat. One of the standout ways the Three Birds created more space was through the clever use of curves that can instantly enhance the flow of different rooms, while still defining the different spaces. As the home already had quite a lot of original curved features, such as corner walls in the corridor, it made sense to pay respect to the more fluid and softer style and embrace it in their new design. To modernise the living area and reveal the

space’s full potential, the decision was made to knock down the wall extending the living room space into a dining area “We’re massive fans of open-plan living for families and in a home of this size, removing a wall to increase living space makes a world of difference,” says Erin. “Once this wall was down, the rest of the changes were cosmetic. This is the perfect example of a cosmetic reno and what can be done on a smaller, more achievable scale with less budget but BIG impact,” Erin adds. To differentiate between the two rooms without losing that sense of flow, an arch wall was incorporated using Gyprock Flexible plasterboard. Perfect for a wide range of designs, Gyprock Flexible adds another dimension to the home by creating wow factor features and interesting design elements. “We’re really happy with how these rooms turned out,” says Lana. “The lounge room is my favourite room in the whole house. The arched wall beautifully frames the dining area and automatically injects versatility into the property. The space is now multi-functional, offering rooms to entertain or relax.” Space saving and storage was a special request from homeowners Cath and Sarah, so inclusions such as multi-purpose seating were a no brainer for the designer trio. Underneath the curved arch wall, the Three Birds built a large double-sided bench seat which offered not only additional seating for both rooms but also provided plenty of storage room inside. To marry the curved style throughout the house, the bathroom features include a rounded mirror, shower screen and stunning recessed arch. Perfect for extra storage and display space, recesses are great if there is the wall cavity space to fit them in. “In the master ensuite we created a curved recess shelving unit using Gyprock Flexible and finished with a Talostone engineered stone bench top, delivering a high-end look

that also provides a gorgeous nook for special pieces,” says Bonnie. An important element the Three Birds needed to tackle in the renovation was noise reduction. The cottage is located on a busy commuter road, up from a Royal Australian Air Force base, couple this with two young children who love to play, and a solution for better acoustics and blocking out external noise was required. Gyprock Superchek plasterboard was

selected as the interior wall lining due to its superior sound resistant qualities, perfect for reducing the outdoor noise and also guaranteeing less noise transmitted between the rooms inside the house. An added benefit of Gyprock Superchek is that it’s three times tougher than regular plasterboard, so perfect to withstand the impact of children running around, offering impact resistance to dents, scuffs and scrapes. Rethinking your floor plan and using creative design to open up rooms can really change the way you live in your house and allows your home to grow as your family does. Gyprock is made in Australia and available at Gyprock Trade stores, Gyprock resellers and Bunnings nationwide. For more information on Gyprock, visit www.gyprock.com.au

"As its name suggests, Ribs is composed of a series of arching forms over a movable aluminium spine. In 1998 I wanted to learn about moulding plywood so I made the first version of Ribs in timber. But the form lends itself to many possible materials. Over the years it has been used in so many different environments and I have liked it in every single one. " - Stefan Lie, Designer.

The Last Word COMMENTS KEITH JACKSON

Health expertise, public compliance

T

HIS delightful magazine went into a short recess during those early, unpredictable months of Covid-19. These were the months when politicians, scientists and doctors were struggling with how to bring the pandemic under control without a vaccine. After some big scares, the disease was duly contained in Australia and we’re all appropriately grateful for the health expertise and public compliance that yielded this outcome. Now we’ve got to be vigilant and keep it this way. As most State borders were gradually re-opened late in the year, Queenslanders gave Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk the greatest gift any community can offer by way of political reward, an election win. So we’re relaxed and happy to have Noosa Style back in circulation just in time for Summer.

A narrow brush with Covid

B

EING primarily a tourist town, Noosa was exceptionally quiet during those six months of hyper-vigilance between March and September. The businesses associated with the tourism industry – and that’s a lot of folks– were doing it tough. But, except for NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian, I didn’t hear too much whining when Palaszczuk closed the Queensland border. Most people knew that if our community was to be safe from the virus we would have to exercise restraint and cop some sacrifice. Early on, Noosa did have a brush with Covid when a visitor to town spread the virus to a dozen others over lunch at one of our bayside eateries. That cluster was quickly brought under control and things have been Noosa-style calm since.

The last block on our street

I

t was the last empty block in Treasure Cove. The block where kids would play and plovers would nest a couple of times a year. Now it sports a fine house nearing completion, more than adequately adorning our streetscape. Throughout the shire something similar is happening as empty lots are disappearing, houses being constructed and rental properties diminishing. There’s a downside to this, however, as Noosa becomes too expensive for many people to live – including lots of those who work here. Talk about affordable housing has been around for many years – together with some freestyle chest beating and bemoaning – but no realisable plans have been forthcoming from local government or State authorities. This is the moment for them to step up their game.

AM

distribute a flier intimating that Sandy was a covert Labor Party supporter. This allegation was derived from her voting with Labor 121 times in the old parliament. This was true, but the LNP did not reveal that Sandy had voted for it on 104 occasions. Given the miscellany of issues parliamentarians are asked to debate, determine and vote on, I reckon that was a pretty balanced outcome. The LNP needs to hang its head in shame. Noosa politics is robust enough without people resorting to smears.

Sandy overcomes the smearers

B

EFORE the recent election, Noosa’s state seat was a widely anticipated shoo-in for sitting member Sandy Bolton, Queensland’s only elected Independent MP. And indeed, Sandy won in a landslide, with 4,000 more people giving her their top vote this year than in 2017. So Sandy, with 44% of the primary vote, was easily elected on

preferences and a 70% winner in twoparty preferred terms. But the win was marred by a last ditch decision by the LNP to

Big parties in real trouble in Noosa

S

ANDY Bolton’s big win in Noosa poses future problems for each of the main political entities that also contested the seat. Quickly glancing at Noosa’s demographic profile, one might consider that its semi-rural, ageing, somewhat conservative population would deliver rusted on LNP voters. But the home-grown Independent has shattered that theory. Her win not only left the LNP (30%) with much to do to restore itself as a viable political operation, it swamped Labor (14%), left the Greens staggering (7%) and demolished One Nation (3%). In the 28 years since the seat was created, LNP has held it for 20 years. But with a big buffer and another four years, looks like Sandy will hold the seat as long as she wants. government’s ‘healthy river’ rating and other d a t a painting a very different picture.” Beam t r aw l i n g for prawns has taken on place Noosa’s river and lakes for 60 years but these days only four licence holders continue to trawl. State scientists and government authorities have made it crystal clear that such small scale trawling is both environmentally friendly and sustainable. But the State

Is Noosa River really threatened by trawling?

N

ICK Hluszko is a successful international businessman, president of the Noosa North Shore Association and also a committed environmentalist. He’s just written a scholarly paper, ‘Beam Trawling in the Noosa River and Lakes’. Sounds like a dry read, but believe me it’s fascinating – and disturbing. Hluszko enjoys reading stuff that you and I would leave on the library shelf: in this case two separate reports about the Noosa River by academics Dr Ruth Thurston in 2016 and Prof Greg Skilleter in 2019. There are also many other academic and government papers on the same theme. “The intent of the two reports was never about prawn trawling,” Hluszko says, “but they triggered inferences and speculation by a small group of people that have cast a dark cloud over trawling on the Noosa River. For their own reasons, these people are selectively quoting from the two reports in an attempt to validate their view that beam trawling is damaging the river. This is despite the Queensland

Government being and Noosa Council are lobbied that the Thurston and Skilleter reports offer evidence that beam trawling on the river is causing damage and should be banned. Hluszko says this so-called ‘evidence’ misinterprets the reports and distorts their conclusions. He says State level bureaucrats, Noosa Councillors and key Council staff need to understand this issue first-hand rather than being influenced by manufactured data that may lead to poor decisions. “Local fishermen are more than happy to

show decision-makers close up what they do, and officials should avail themselves of such offers,” Hluszko says. “There’s no evidence that supports the position of those who wish to ban beam trawling. Their views are not backed up by the data and do not align with the science. “Noosa councillors in particular must not respond to the baying of a Wild West lynch mob. There’s nothing to warrant any physical change to Noosa’s beam trawling industry. If those people who oppose it have influenced the Council, then Councillors are going to hang the wrong man and wreck the livelihoods of good people.” And there’s another dilemma. Calling for the removal of beam trawlers from the river by misrepresenting the data is diverting attention away from the key problems of the Noosa River which continue to be related to sedimentation and hydrology. “It is imperative that the data be honestly interpreted, enabling the focus to be on the real root causes,” Hluszko says. “Assumptions should not be based upon anecdote, opinion, cherry-picked reports or emotion. The Queensland government is managing Noosa’s environmentallyfriendly fisheries closely and sustainably – let’s leave it this way. “Prawn trawling on Noosa’s river and lakes is a practice we should be proud of and support. Imagine being able to walk along the river foreshore and buying freshly caught seafood sourced from a beautiful and clean river. There’s no reason to ban beam trawling, the challenge is to make it even more sustainable than it is today.”

technology, imaging neither of which is available in the shire. It the not was technology that had Councillors in a dither, it was where the facility was to be located – on a site zoned for medical use Eden opposite Rehabilitation Hospital. Not the right place, said the Council. No we don’t understand either. It was the second time the Council had rejected the facility, the same thing having happened at a site opposite Noosa Hospital in 2016. This time around, astonishingly, only Mayor Clare Stewart supported the proposal. Most people in Noosa were aghast when they learned of this second decision to reject a modern cancer and cardiac technology. But, thanks to poor decision-making by six councillors, it’s gone. A facetious ‘well done’ to those six Councillors.

Outdoors ENJOYING YOUR GARDEN

Grow your own food - this summer

I

f you would like to add a vege patch to your outdoor space for summer, and we’re finding in these times a lot of people are, planting things like spinach, iceberg lettuce, snow peas and kale, as well as zucchini, and cherry tomatoes which are always great staples that will flourish close to year round. Chinese greens will also thrive, and Pak choi (also called bok choy) will be up and ready to eat in only six to eight weeks. Herbs such as aromatic basil, mint, parsley, thyme, rosemary, chives and chillies are all good choices for summer growing, as well as herbs with known health benefits such as turmeric, ginger, ginseng, Echinacea and maca. With many of us utilising a limited garden space, using edible plants as part of your overall garden design has become very popular. If you’re keen to look at foodscaping to update your garden this summer I would suggest adding edible flowers, using rosemary trimmed into balls, or using cranberries or a wild or Alpine strawberry, mint, thyme or oregano as ground cover. From a design perspective, my tips for creating a space that is bountiful, functional and beautiful include: • Create

structure: if you are dedicating a space to growing food then geometry and structure works to maximise space.

Consider colour: Opt for heirloom varieties like purple kale and blue cabbage to create a design feature. Many vegetables and herbs also have lovely flowers and variations in foliage that add interest. Be sure to layer and use the different textures and colours in your garden design. •

• Screen

or create shade with fruit bearing trees: If you need some screening trees look at how you can use trees that fruit. Citrus, apple and pear trees are great options. • Use raised garden beds: build in seating and storage

around the edge of your garden bed to make tending to it more enjoyable and to maximise the use of space, and also look at planter boxes, tiered garden beds, pots and herb walls. These are particularly practical for small courtyards or balcony spaces. Run fruit and vegetables off pergolas and other outdoor structures: Things like hanging strawberries can soften these structures with attractive greenery – and will also save you having to dedicate land space to your vege patch. •

• If

you’re concerned about the look of your edible garden while transitioning between seasons, consider hedging or other structures to conceal beds when they’re not looking their best. And interspersing herbs and vegetables with other plants will help minimise any sparseness that may arise as an edible plant goes out of season. Matt Leacy - Landart Landscapes

o it was a somewhat fortuitous decision, albeit a nerve wracking one, when, only weeks into the pandemic, we decided to complement the Seadragon Style business with the purchase of Doonan Valley Garden Centre. At the time, many people asked if I was out of my mind, but it was a lifelong dream and 6 months on, we’ve loved every minute! Doonan Valley Garden Centre occupies one of the most naturally beautiful sites a garden centre could wish for…nestled in the embrace of a forest of assorted palms, planted when the garden centre site was first established over 30 years ago. Together they have become something of a destination for garden lovers with many of our loyal customers regularly making the journey from Hervey Bay, the

Gold Coast and as far west as Toowoomba and Dalby. Across the driveway, Seadragon Style continues to source high quality, handmade, artisanware for the home and garden - primarily ceramic and earthenware pots, urns and water bowls but also brass, metal and marble crafts from around the world. We’ve got three containers scheduled to arrive over the Christmas and holiday season with a huge range of our best sellers as well as an expansion into many new and more contemporary styles. If you’re here for your summer holiday it will be well worth your while to visit and take a little bit of Seadragon Style home with you. Sarah Hansen - Doonan Valley Nursery & Seadragon Style
