LO Studios was proud to present a night full of fine food and fabulous drinks recently, when they held the exhibition launch for international talent, Michael Bond. His new show titled ‘Cherish’ - a celebration of what we cherish most - was adorned with red dots from eager purchasers. Michael is local to the Sunshine Coast, and his abstract, ethereal works feature in many private collections around the world. - and most recently featured on The Block, in Bianca and Carla’s living room.

Santa’s Classy Helpers Fashions on the Water Lorraine Kenway, owner of Noosa’s Classy Lady boutique and Classy Lady on Gibson is also the dynamo behind Santa’s Classy Helpers, a dedicated group of women who fundraise all year round, to ensure that 300 disadvantaged families can have a Christmas to remember each year. With the annual ‘Christmas shopping day’ fast approaching for the families, the group held a final fundraising Fashion Luncheon at The Boathouse Restaurant in Noosaville, where 150 women turned out in all their finery, to share the dining delights, a glass or three of wine - and watch the new season offerings of fabulous clothing and swimwear from Lorraine’s boutiques paraded by ‘real’ women.

STELLA ARTOIS SENSORIUM... ar Rococo Guests at the Stella Artois Sensorium held recently at Rococo Bistro Noosa, in the ever-bustling Hastings Street, were treated to an inspired, four course luncheon designed by Melbourne’s acclaimed chef David Moyle, who was previously the co-owner of Tasmania’s famed Franklin Restaurant. David’s menu was designed to showcase our local Queensland bounty and demonstrate David’s passion for sustainable produce. - Add to this a never-ending supply of Stella Artois, and it’s no wonder there were so many men escorting their lovely ladies to the Friday luncheon. As glasses and bottles clinked and the dishes were devoured, we noticed that they clock was ticking away and nobody seemed the slightest bit interested in going home.

he last few months has seen Australia ravaged by fires, but it has also brought out the best in people as well. Those who have put their lives on-the-line to assist and support other - first responders, neighbours and total strangers. We never know how strong we are until something catastrophic comes along to test us. And, then we realise that we have it within ourselves to help others wherever possible; maybe only in a small way, but as we all know - every little bit helps. And, all those little bits add up to something much greater than those parts. It is with this in mind that I wish everyone a wonderful Christmas season, and a brighter and cooler New Year. For those in need, you can be sure that there are many groups out there, helping to ensure that you have a merry festive season as well. Once again, Noosa’s own Santa’s Classy Helpers is holding their annual shopping day for 300 referred ‘families in need’ at The J; as well as, extra presents and food for the struggling, farming community of Jericho, thanks to the support of drivers from Tewantin Lions Club, who will travel for 3 days each way to deliver those precious goods. There have been so many losses of our precious wildlife that I know all the carers will be needing assistance and goods. Please make it your resolution this year to help wherever you can.

As you deck the halls and plan your festive season celebrations, take time to think about how you can help others in the following year; from a kind word for a stranger - to finding extra time for your family and friends. And, please be sure to include asking RUOK into your conversations this coming year, to ensure that all those we love are with us for the long run. ut to get there it needs more concerted action – engaging the community in all its diversity. It’s what I’ve been working for during my four years on Noosa Council, as I’ve attempted to open up the council to the community, get the information flowing and create an environment where everybody is pitching in. After all, that’s the only way to build a productive, cohesive community. Under the watchful eyes of its people, Noosa will continue to maintain its beautiful natural environment, its architectural uniqueness, and will grow as a welcoming and inclusive community. By encouraging and clearing the obstacles to business endeavour, Noosa’s economy - at present somewhat narrowly based - will expand and diversify, developing a robustness strong enough to avoid the worst effects of economic downturn. Village centres will have multi-use zoning – combining a blend of residential, commercial, retail and leisure elements - and be vibrant walkable places to live, work and play. Transport, traffic and parking – currently areas of concern - will be efficiently engineered and managed with council resources evenly and rationally shared across all parts of the Shire. Noosa will successfully combine a thriving property market, which it has now, with housing affordability for workers and low income families, which it needs. The region will increasingly experience impacts of climate change including bush fires, sea level rises, storms, flooding and erosion. Well-resourced action will be taken to prevent damage, to minimise impacts on people and their homes, and to assist people who may be seriously affected. With the new international airport and the population of Sunshine Coast Council increasing by 65% to 495,000 over 20 years and Noosa growing by just 16% to 63,000, the challenge will be to welcome visitors while maintaining a distinctive community. Amongst other things, this will require more effective transport and traffic management and greater collaboration between the Sunshine Coast’s two Councils. Noosa’s council will take a fair and compassionate approach towards residents and their businesses. It will be consultative and responsive in solving people’s problems, fully transparent in decision-making, set priorities on the basis of real community needs and understand how to maintain an engaged and harmonious community. Noosa Shire will be a diverse, prosperous and well governed community that is fully informed and engaged. And it will remain a paradise.

hhh a Noosa Christmas – is there anything better? Sandy toes, salty kisses from the grandies, exploring and delighting in pristine views, river journeys and vibrant hospitality, and of course fab food! Did I mention the scent of tea tree blossom, that waft of pure relaxation, and being with loved ones? Bliss on its way, but not quite yet!!

This Christmas season differs slightly from last year for this MP. Yes, there is the frenzy of last sittings, wonderful community celebrations and playing Santa’s offsider visiting our matriarchs and patriarchs at our care homes. There is the clean-up, chasing Departments before they close on any outstanding matters, collating the year for the annual mailout ‘Connect’, and compiling the survey, which requires a crystal ball to assess what may come into Chamber in the next 12 months! And there is the gratitude, reflection and appreciation, for all that we have, for those who have made our world, and those we miss. What is different this year is that we have gone through two disasters in two months, and both times were blessed in more ways than many would realise. Bushfires or wildfires are traumatic, not only from the immediate impacts that included evacuation, but from the ‘afterwards’. For Noosa, as well across QLD who are being impacted by these catastrophic events, our front liners were more than heroic. These first responders, many of them volunteers, worked tirelessly, pushing through physical and mental exhaustion to save us, our homes and our loved ones. From urban to auxiliary and rural fire brigades, QLD Parks & Wildlife, Police and other Emergency Services such as SES, through to our water bombers who became our sky ‘angels’. As well the Noosa Council team, Local Disaster Management Group and hundreds of incredible volunteers who

assisted at the evacuation and recovery centres, fed, cared for and comforted evacuees with their furry families. To name just a few -, Lion’s, Salvation Army, St Vincent de Paul and also our wildlife groups who formed an army to recover our injured buds. Then there was the selfless support from individuals and local businesses, who gave, both during and after, including hosting GoFundMe pages for our two families who lost their homes. What an effort. A caring, committed community who during both disasters, pulled out all stops. There were many touching stories, including first responders who fed and watered pets and livestock at evacuated properties, a 93year old evacuee who made light of her first ever experience sleeping on a floor mattress, and yes, being awarded a pair of ‘evacuation undies’, which brought much laughter, and tears? So this Christmas, I have only one wish. That we all take a moment to reflect on not what has been lost, but what was saved, and gifted. To give thanks for the sacrifices made by so many, and how blessed we are to have them in our world. And to consider contributing in any way we can, if not doing so already, to others and our volunteer organisations whether that be our time, or a simple hug. Okay, being the festive season, can I add in one more wish? That you have a beautiful Christmas with the ones that you love, furry or otherwise! Until 2020, to all readers, blessings, stay safe and #fireready, and enjoy this precious time wherever, and whoever, you are with! How Sydney native Kym Johnson is combining dance duties with entrepreneurial interests, and the small matter of bringing up two children.

he Dancing with the Stars performer, who grew up in Sydney and regularly returns to Noosa and the Gold Coast for holidays, has an unmistakable passion for dance and performance, but has happily segued into the celebrity sports world – through her engagement to Shane Watson a few years back – and has even released her own fitness DVD. The 43-year-old is also outspoken about parenting issues. Indeed, shortly after giving birth to twins Hudson and Haven – with billionaire husband Robert Herjavec – Kym announced the importance of her kids having an Australian upbringing. “Moving to America was great in terms of career, and clearly I still have a lot going on there, but you are only ever truly rooted to who you are and where your recent family come from, and obviously I want my kids to feel Australian.

“Being Australian, to me, means being confident, brave; it means standing up for yourself, perhaps taking a slightly different perspective on life to others, but always being fiercely proud of what you do. I can’t think of many other better values to live by!” Indeed, when stardom really began to ascend after the first few series of Dancing with the Stars from 2004 onwards, the call of America proved too difficult to refuse. “I think moving abroad for me was clearly a sensible career move, but when you’ve spent so long in one country, all those conventions and habits become so embedded. When you rock up somewhere else, it’s often not the big differences that hit you, but more the little things like unusual foods, strange TV and even road signs. “I think you know when you’ve become accustomed to somewhere because you accept those things without noticing them, but it does take a long time.” continues next page...

“I think, like a lot of people who have excelled in a certain field, it’s often a combination of hard work and good luck. I would never deny I had lucky breaks along the way and, on another day, things might have turned out very differently. What I do know though is I have invested blood, sweat and tears into finding a niche and driving a career forward, and if I can offer just one piece of advice, it’s that hard work really does pay off in the end.” Kym return to Oz this year enabled her to act as both host and choreograph in The Real Dirty Dancing, the Seven Network reality show which comes about exactly a decade after the sad passing as Patrick Swayze, the original dirty dancer. “It’s incredible to think we have been without Patrick for a whole 10 years, but it just goes to show the measure and the influence he had, given the fact we’re are still referencing that iconic film. Once Fame died away, the Eighties had been a bit of a slow decade for dance movies, but Patrick and his brilliant cast changed all that, and that credit lives on. “While we all go about things in different ways, the end result comes back to a love of dance. For me, there are few things in life that look or feel better.”

ym, whose surname is now officially Herjavec upon her marriage back in July 2016, is clearly now in that second phase. Her stint with Dancing with the Stars US has now broached 15 series, during which time she’s swayed, swivelled and swung in the arms of dance partners including Jerry Springer, David Arquette and Mr T. She’s also won the series twice, with Donny Osmond, in 2009, and again two years later when matched with Hines Ward. While she retains other business interests in the States – such as her The Bod fitness studio located in Beverly Hills – you sense there is a real desire to reconnect with as much Southern Hemisphere life as possible. “I think children are brilliant for slowing down and resetting – they are a perfect way for you to begin to assess what are and what aren’t the important things in life. “Of course it’s true I want to be successful and feel as if I am really part of growing a fitness, health and wellbeing movement, along with so many other brilliant businesses; but really, nothing is more pivotal to my happiness than my two children, so it becomes an easy decision to make when the options are family life or work.” For Kym, it is all a long way from spending hours and hours every week as a youngster in Sydney dance studios. As a 12-year-old, and having already been dancing of nine of those years, she won

KYM JOHNSON QUICK FIRE Q&A Q: You’ve always praised your husband Robert as being a key driver for your business projects, right? KYM: Definitely. He is a businessman by trade, and so shrewd. Really, I feel as though we come from different sides of the equation but can complement each other perfectly. I have the creative inspiration, he puts numbers and spreadsheets behind it all in telling me if the plans will work! What I love about him is not just the fact he is inspiring at every turn; he’ll also tell me straight if I’m letting my mind run away with me. Honesty really is the best policy! Q: Any plans for Christmas? KYM: As usual, we are looking to relax, take time out and kick back for a while. It’s never that easy, but

it does feel more important than ever to do that now the kids are the ages they are. They are just beginning to understand there is something special going on, and it makes it so magical as a parent to see your kids being inspired and engaged by the same things that made your own childhood special. Q: Would you want them to follow in your own footsteps? KYM: I think it’s a great industry to be in, but the work it takes to get anywhere is absolutely mind-blowing. Of course I want them to grow up to be people who appreciate the real value of investing in a hobby or a career choice, but at the same time I don’t want them to drive themselves so hard that they lose the satisfaction, and that is often the danger with creative or dramatic arts. Ultimately, this is all a long time in the future, but generally speaking, whatever makes them happy will make me happy.

The mid-November announcement by former barrister Clare Stewart to challenge incumbent Noosa mayor Tony Wellington for his job has further excited even this normally animated Shire. Just as the community was beginning to wonder whether there would be a contest at the mayoral election next March, there emerged a formidable candidate to make a real race of it. By Keith Jackson

lare’s back story is powerful, different and extraordinary. One brisk winter’s morning in 2000, she was on her usual 10 km daily jog in Sydney’s eastern suburbs when she was struck by a garbage truck and pinned beneath it for 37 minutes in a struggle to survive. The bright young Queensland graduate in business and law had only recently moved from Brisbane to Sydney to build a foundation for her legal career. Now, in one shocking moment, that – and much more – seemed to have disappeared. The surgeon who first saw Clare in the intensive care unit later remarked on camera that the injuries were so horrific she looked like someone he’d normally find in the “anatomical dissecting room of a morgue”. Clare remained in an induced coma for almost three days and, when she regained consciousness, her first question was to ask her parents if she still had legs. “Yes,” they said, “but….” Her recovery was long and painful. But I think overall these are my two top favourites: * Ride from Noosa along David Low Way down the coast to Marcoola, and then head inwards onto the Sunshine Coast motor way before going over the Maroochydore bridge, taking the turn off to Bli Bli. This is the old 70.3 worlds circuit, which passes a café called Guru Life. Guru Life is the highlight of this ride; a café offering not only amazing coffee but also a unique culture; a sort of cyclist’s enlightenment that acts to enhance every km that follows on afterwards. The coast ride back to Noosa is the same route, but a great way to get home with the ocean in view over your right shoulder for most of the ride. * My second highlight ride takes you out the back towards Gympie via Cedar Pocket Road. I head on out through Boreen Point and onto Kin Kin, before hitting Cedar Pocket Road then onto the Old Bruce Highway which connects you back to Cooroy and then Noosa.

Noosa also offers a brilliant maze of ‘running on tap’. Two of my favourite training runs are as follows: * The national park is right on your doorstep pretty much wherever you are in Noosa and it can be accessed in many different ways. I use it for my go-to one-hour, easy run sessions. It’s a really nice place to get onto some single track with some great scenic sections. Go at the right time of the day and it’s pretty quiet. There are any number of combinations that can easily give you up to a 20km run if you are happy to double back and link the valley systems, or head through to Sunshine Beach and come back around through Noosa Junction to finish off with some time on the paths. * My absolute favourite is a point to point run which has become one of my key training runs. This starts in Noosa and heads on down the coast. Depending on how long you want to run; 1.5 hours takes you to Coolum and just after here you can duck back towards the coast and run another 4km cycle way around to Marcoola. From here you can go even further and run all the way down to Maroochydore on a foot path. All the paths feed together. There’s a couple of times you cross the road but other than that you’re pretty much on bike or run trail the whole way down. It starts off quite slow so I use the first 30 minutes where there’s a lot of hills to get in a rhythm and warm up. Then there’s a solid 15km section through the middle right down to Marcoola which is all fast running and you can start trying to push some paces with those tired legs! Then I grab a coffee and get a pick up! Travelling as a family, it’s always a bonus to find opportunity to train whilst hanging out with my kids. Open water swimming at Noosa Bay is the ultimate example of this because they have SUP’s for hire on the beach so my family can come out with me and run my sessions for me. Or my wife will do yoga on the beach and the kids will make their own fun, while I am out. You can swim horizontally along the shore with 1.2km between the two points or you can head directly out you Granite Bay for a 3-4km session. For the recreational swimmers, every Sunday around 3pm there is a social meet-up and open water swim.

for ever yone, not mat ter what level of fitness offering a huge point of dif ference - with regard to ser vicing athletes as well as holiday makers. I swim with John Rogers for some solid 7-8km sets most mornings at 5.30pm, but there are also open to the public squads at 7am and at 9am with Nick Croft. Nutrition is a vital part of any athletes training routine so having access to quality food is key and again, you guessed it, Noosa nails this on every level. As a family, our highlight is definitely the local farmers market that happens every Sunday, nestled amongst the gum trees. We religiously join the hive of activity and have breakfast and coffee, in the pristine sunshine that seems to constantly stream down in Noosa. The farmers market is packed with locally-produced seasonal produce from fresh organics, freshly squeezed lime drinks, skin care, nuts and seeds, herbs and seafood, freshly baked bread and scrumptious cheeses along with other hand-crafted products. This is where we buy most of our groceries for the week. Definitely the most amazing famers market I’ve ever been to. During the week, for any food top up’s we might need we also shop at Organika and Belmondos. I’ll forever fly the Noosa flag and continue coming here for many years to come with my family, not only for training but for holiday too. Noosa really does tick all the boxes, seamlessly catering for just about everyone and offering a healthy kicker of relaxed vibes, good food, consistent sunshine - and probably the most epic beaches in the world. *** Braden also holds the Golden Ticket for the Ironman World 70.3 Championship 2020.

n the high tech surrounds of Peregian Beach’s Digital Hub the chilled couple and their company, Pluggas, may have hit on a winning formula. With no formal film training but a keen interest in storytelling their first documentary film, A Woman’s Calling, recently won an international award and was purchased by SBS. “We’re having success in this industry – that’s what we’ll do,” Fisch said. This is a far cry from what they were doing only a few years ago when the former social scientist and exarmy engineer set off to Spain to study Flamenco dance with a view to setting up a school. While there, they filmed the steps of a specific style of Flamenco to bring back from Spain and discovered people were interested in their film style. With little money to their name and discovering Sabby was pregnant with their first child they returned to Fisch’s home town of Bundaberg, staying with his parents, while they decided on their next steps. When a project arose to make a film on Bundaberg’s first vegan café they jumped at the chance and to their surprise discovered the finished product was so popular it was viewed by 20 per cent of the town’s population. “People really related to the story,” Fisch said. “We’re extremely passionate about stories. That’s because we believe that a great story is the foundation to positive change. Everyone has a story to tell and that story can impact society or even the world.” The couple realised they had found their niche revealing the backstories of businesses. For a year they created one business film a week, for free, and their hard work paid off when they won their first big client, Bundaberg Brewed Drinks. To hone their skills in communicating their vision to their clients they completed a master storytelling course, Muse Storytelling, with filmmaker Patrick Moreau. Then while in Cairns on another assignment they were approached by Yolonde Entsch, from Empowering Women Empowering Communities, to create a film around a work for the dole project. The project, undertaken by the women in north Queensland indigenous community Doomadgee, created hygiene kits for poor communities in Papua New Guinea. Fisch said together they pitched their project concept to community development program contractor My Pathway which supported them with funding, then they put together an international film team. Filmed in Doomadgee and PNG the film features the story of Veronica and a group of Doomadgee women who look beyond their own struggles and seek to help women in PNG.

Now with two children, Lily, 3, and Loki, 2, sharing the experience the couple are forging a life in their own style. Sabby has chosen not to put her children in childcare, believing the time has come when women can combine work and parenting. She recounts proudly how she pitched a project to a client while double breastfeeding both children and won the deal. Pluggas is now working on Noosa’s first short film produced by the Sunshine Coast Screen Collective in collaboration with long-term television producer and director Bill Hughes. With an anything is possible attitude Fisch believes with its wealth of talent Noosa has the potential to produce feature films. The couple aims to establish a production company in Noosa with the experience to rival Sydney or the Gold Coast to be ready when the next big feature film comes along.

t Noosa Junction the mighty turkey mural is hard to ignore. When artist David Houghton was contracted to paint it he was surprised when the Noosa Junction Association decided the subject for the mural would be the bird that roamed the

area. “I just rolled with it,” David said. “It was fun, a bit different. I do a lot of native animals. I would never have thought to do a turkey. But I’ve had a lot of good feedback from that one. People are really loving it.” About seven years ago Lamington Noosa Heads store owner Leesa Gordon held a competition to design a turkey t-shirt. “We started with a turkey tea towel but everyone was asking for a t-shirt,” she said. “It’s so iconic especially for Hastings Street.” It’s now become a must have souvenir of a Noosa visit and the range has expanded to sock and undies. According to Griffith University bird expert Professor Darryl Jones they deserve our respect. Brush turkeys are the most ancient member of a family that dates back 30 million years. Their egg incubation process - dumping them in a mound and abandoning them - is a primitive nesting behaviour,

HAPPY 130th ANNIVERSARY CHATEAU TANUNDA Icon of the Barossa... This majestic bluestone winery and vineyard property, is a living testament to the colourful history and pioneering spirit attached to Australia’s pre-eminent wine region - the Barossa Valley. Now, thanks to the passion and dedication of its new owners, the Geber family, this iconic Barossa estate is celebrating a new lease on life and its 130 year anniversary.

Sensing opportunity in Europe’s pain, the three founders of Château Tanunda set about building a Bavarian-style Château - dedicated to the production of fine quality wines. This grand vision would become - for a while, the largest winemaking facility in the Southern Hemisphere. European immigrants had been planting vines in the Barossa since the 1840s, so the region was a natural choice. The resulting wines, made from grapes produced by 560 local growers (paid a pound per gallon – a substantial sum at the time), were transported on company-owned ships to a wine-starved Europe. Château Tanunda’s success was the Barossa’s success. For years it was the beating heart of Barossa winemaking. A veritable ‘Ivy League’ of Australian winemakers worked or studied at the facility, including Prof.

In 1994, in recognition of its rich history, Château Tanunda was placed on the Australian Register of State Heritage Places – but by then, its glory days were a memory. When John Geber chanced upon it in 1998, and bought it a day later - he embraced the challenge of restoring this magnificent property to its iconic status. ummer is well and truly here - but how fresh are you really feeling? With the indulgent summer festive and holiday period creating the ‘perfect storm’ for over-indulging - now is the ultimate time to make a few changes to your diet and give your wellbeing a much-needed boost for the new year ahead. Jennifer May, renowned Nutritionist, author and wellness speaker from Food Intolerance Australia, explains that there are many simple ways that people can give their diet a bit of a ‘shake-up’ to get their health back on track. “Every little food switch or healthy addition to your diet can go a long way in helping you achieve optimum wellness. Don’t think of it as a big task because you don’t have to completely change everything you’re eating or drinking,” says Jennifer. “For most people it’s actually more achievable to take small steps to improving their diet, which can then help form lifelong healthy habits for maximum wellbeing and vitality.” Not sure where to start? Here are Jennifer’s top tips for your wellness: Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables – Studies show that eating 5 or more serves of fresh fruits and vegetables each day can result in improved energy, mood, motivation and wellbeing in just 3 days. This is easily achieved by starting the day with a healthy smoothie. Eat leafy greens – They give a powerful mineral boost that can improve energy, reduce aches and pains and even reduce PMS symptoms. Some leafy greens, such as rocket, also help to improve digestion by stimulating the release of digestive enzymes and supporting the growth and replication of healthy gut bugs. Eat blueberries every day – An Australian study found that a handful of blueberries a day is enough to improve memory, focus and may even reduce dementia and Alzheimer symptoms. Blueberries are also a great source of antioxidants and may help tired adrenal glands to recover from stress and exhaustion. So, eat more blueberries for a sharper mind and better overall wellbeing. Ditch cow’s milk in favour of plant-

Have a cold caffeine hit – Coffee is also a source of plant tannins and as a bitter food it helps to stimulate the release of digestive enzymes. When cold-brewed, such as with Califia Farms XX Espresso Cold Brew Coffee, the antioxidants and healthy oils of the coffee bean are maintained so you get the same great energy boost but with less stress or digestive distress. Grab a handful of almonds, half a punnet of blueberries and a cold brew such as Califia Farms Mocha Noir Cold Brew Coffee. For lunch, have a healthy salad made of 3-4 handfuls of fresh vegetables, a handful of fresh fruit and some avocado. Half an avocado topped with lemon juice and a few chili flakes makes a great afternoon snack. For extra protein and a powerful calcium boost, add a tin of sardines and lots more lemon. REGION Bangladesh | SERVES 5 PREPARATION 50 minutes + 30 minutes chilling COOKING 15 minutes | DIFFICULTY Medium BEGUN BHAJA ½ teaspoon chilli powder 1 teaspoon ground turmeric 1 teaspoon Garam masala a pinch of salt, or to taste juice of 1 lemon 1 large eggplant (aubergine), sliced into discs 2 cm (¾ inch) thick rice bran oil, for shallow-frying BENGALI SALAD ½ telegraph (long) cucumber, peeled, seeded and finely chopped 1 carrot, shredded 50 g (1¾ oz/½ cup) finely chopped

Serving mangoes as a fruit centrepiece is the perfect way to give your summer entertaining a golden lift.

2 mins until lightly toasted. Add the chilli, cook a further 30 secs. Add to the coconut. Set aside to cool. Combine the dressing ingredients in a jug, season and whisk until well combined. Pour half into a large bowl. Using a mandolin, thinly slice the fennel and radish. Add to the dressing just before you are ready to serve. Toss gently to coat. Cut the cheeks from the mangoes. Using a large spoon remove the mango flesh from the cheeks and slice. Add to the fennel with the cucumbers, prawns and parsley. Method: Toss gently to combine. Spoon coconut into a small frying pan over medium heat. Cook, shaking pan 2-3 Pile the salad onto serving plates. Sprinkle mins until toasted. Transfer to a bowl. Add with coconut chilli mixture. Spoon over the sesame seeds to the pan, cook, shaking for remaining dressing. Season and serve.

3 tsp sesame seeds 1 tsp chilli flakes 2 fennel or 4 baby fennel 6 red readish 24 (500g) medium cooked prawns, peeled & deveined Prawn, Mango and Qukes Salad with Chilli 1 cup flat leaf parsley leaves and Coconut Dressing: Serves: 4 as a light meal; 6 as a side salad 1 lemon, juiced Prep time: 20 mins 3 tbs extra virgin olive oil Cooking time: 6 mins 2 tsp castor sugar Ingredients: 2 Calypso mangoes 6 Qukes baby cucumbers, quartered lengthways 2 tbs shredded coconut

red radish 2 small–medium vine-ripened tomatoes 1 red onion, finely chopped 2 Indian green chillies, finely chopped 1 tablespoon sugar ¼ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper a pinch of salt, or to taste juice of ½ large lime a few drops of mustard oil 1 teaspoon crushed peanuts (optional) ½ cup chopped coriander (cilantro) leaves Start by making the salad. Place the cucumber, carrot, radish, tomatoes, onion and chilli in a large bowl. Sprinkle with the sugar, pepper and salt and gently toss the salad until all the ingredients are uniformly mixed. Sprinkle with the lime juice and mustard oil, and crushed peanuts if using. Cover and chill for 30 minutes, tossing

the coriander through just before serving. Meanwhile, put the spices for the begun bhaja in a small bowl. Add the salt, lemon juice and 2 tablespoons water, mixing well. Rub the spice mix over both sides of each eggplant disc until evenly coated, then set aside to absorb for at least 5 minutes. Just before serving, place a large heavybased frying pan over high heat and pour in about 1 cm (½ inch) of rice bran oil. Heat until smoking, then reduce the heat to its lowest setting. Add the eggplant slices, in a single layer. Cook for 3–4 minutes, or until golden underneath, then flip and cook on the other side for a further 3–4 minutes. During this time you may need to add more oil to the pan, as the eggplant will soak it up — hence the need to use a healthy oil.

Serve immediately, while still hot, with the Bengali salad. TIP When frying the eggplant, be sure to keep the oil temperature constant, because if it cools down, the eggplant will absorb all the oil and won’t brown properly. The hot oil will cool down as soon as you add the eggplant (or any other ingredient), so you will need to turn up the temperature until it heats through again, and then turn it down when the oil is the right temperature. et me walk you through some of what I believe to be, the hottest food trends hitting the dining scene this silly season, and where to taste them.

Fermentation is nothing new to the culinary world, but it seems of late, this traditional preservation technique has had a rebirth, with fermented products now seeming to dominate restaurant menu’s - and shopping trollies across the nation. Think Crispy Cauliflower with Fermented Kimchi Yoghurt, on the menu at Rick Shores; the sticky sweet and sour Gochujang sauce on Korean chicken wings at Good Bar; even the Kombucha that you are probably drinking right now - fermentation is everywhere! Fermentation elevates produce that was once ordinary into something extraordinary. Seasonal and Hyper Local Ahh - how I love the menu at Sails Noosa, without fail, in the summertime I can always be sure that they will feature the unbelievable Noosa Red Tomatoes with fresh Burrata, for me to enjoy with a crisp Rosé. I love these rich red, local gems. If you haven’t tried them before, just imagine sitting on a terrace in Naples eating a Caprese salad-type of tomato, the ones that make your mouth water just thinking about them. Real tomatoes with real tomato taste. I love the concept that Sails and the majority of Noosa restaurants have adopted, which is incorporating hyper local and seasonal products into their menus. Not only does eating locally and seasonally have a huge economical impact on the community, but the taste is astronomically better than imported ingredients that are ‘always in stock’. Using seasonal produce makes sense, as it combines products that are at their peak to create a delicious meal. A few of my favourite local restaurants that are doing great things in this space have to be fellow Master Chef alumni, Matt Sinclair’s Sum Yung Guys, Thomas Corner Eatery, Jam Café Sunshine Beach and Noosa Beach House Peter Kuruvita. Rosé. Look, I know this one isn’t ‘technically’ a food - but come on, who doesn’t love a cold glass of Rosé on a hot summer’s day! I myself have been known to “Rosé All Day” in the sweltering heat of the Aussie summer. It’s the perfect companion at a long lunch; and my favourites must include AIX, a provincial French Rosé, Rockford Rosé & GH Mumm Sparking Rosé. ost serious diners, will remember Bruno Loubet fondly from his many years as a restaurateur in Brisbane, with his restaurant Brunoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Table, and then at Baguette in Ascot. He then moved to the Sunshine Coast, to become executive chef at Berardoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Restaurant in Hastings Street, where he brought a little French flair and his love of food to the Noosa dining scene. Bruno and his family then returned to London, where he was an integral part of the plant-based eating movement, with his restaurant The Grain Store. His return to Australia saw him partner with Airport Retail Enterprises to open his cafe Seeds at the Brisbane Airport. But, after years of dreaming about a project

that would allow his family to live a quieter life on the land in S. E. Queensland, whilst still following his passion for food and sharing ideas with likeminded food lovers; Bruno and Catherine came across the perfect place - a lush property in Willow Vale just outside of Brisbane. Catherine explained, that they had seen the property a few years before, but at that time were not ready to make the move - luckily it came back on the market just when they were ready to take their leap of faith. Now Bruno and Catherine, their two dogs Millie and Fergus, horses and assorted farm animals all reside within and without the 125-year-old, old Queenslander residence, with its sweeping verandahs and views over the valley below. With all the goodies on offer - this was definitely the true meaning of ‘paddock to plate’.

Their next focus was the cooking school; here they fully-restored and reinvented a garage into an expansive kitchen and dining area, with wide-open windows to allow the light and fresh country breezes easy access. “The classes are small - 6-8 people is a good fit for classes”, Catherine says, “and we tailor them to suit all skill levels. It gives attendees the ‘personal touch’ from Bruno and makes the classes easier to manage.” We were lucky enough to be invited to the inaugural truffle cooking class, where Bruno had created a menu, that placed the whole focus on beautiful, fragrant truffles supplied by the Western Australian Truffle Co. From starter to dessert - every dish was enhanced by freshly shaved W.A. truffles in all their glory. The day started with coffee and then a walk down the hill to the onsite permaculture vegetable gardens, where we would choose the salad and vegetable goodies for the class. The walk also gave Bruno and Catherine the time to share their vision for sustainability in home and restaurant gardens, and the opportunity to meet the ducks and chickens, and their beautiful horses as well. Bruno also explained how he follows the cycle of the moon when planting, and how he uses native flowers and companion plantings for natural pest control. On returning to the kitchen overlooking the gardens below, we set about creating a non-traditional French onion and truffle soup;

freshly stuffed potato and ricotta tortellini to be served with a rich chicken ragu; and Madelines that would be served with a fresh hay and tonka bean infused ice-cream. Classmates on the day were in full agreement - that the cooking class was a huge success, and the highlight was sitting at the large wooden table and enjoying the (mainly Bruno’s work on our day) luncheon with a glass of chilled Pinot Gris. Bruno’s classes will vary all through the year, offering classes in traditional French cooking; bread making, cakes, seafood whatever takes Bruno’s fancy that week. And, with the addition of his hand-built, wood fired pizza oven outside, the boys can come along to barbecue classes as well. Loved the class, the venue, the location and the fabulous owners, Bruno and Catherine Loubet. Can’t wait to go back again. #1 Keep Moving! Just because you may have some extra time off work, it doesn’t mean you sign off from life. Embrace the extra time, go for a bike ride, a swim or a walk and enjoy some fresh air and time to yourself. If you are a Mum with kids at home like me and wonder what on earth you could do each day (or how you may even survive another day with everyone at home), then make a plan to get everyone out of the house. Head down to the beach or park and have running races, do some stretches, or kill time with lunges, squats and push ups while the children play. If you are at home, put some music on and dance! It is fun and the kids will love it too. Alternatively, find an express 20 minute program online you can do each day. 20 minutes is nothing out of your day, especially if you get it done early. #2 Drink Water Drink more water please. Your body needs it at this time of year more than ever. More rich food, extra alcohol, less sleep and warmer weather can leave us parched and our poor bodies are crying for hydration. Your body is already dehydrated if you feel thirsty. Set yourself a target. Have a 1 litre water bot tle on hand each day and refill after lunch to stay on track. #3 Eat More Nourishing Foods Common sense isn’t it, but golly gosh it can be hard during the festive season. My trick is to always fill your plates with the most nourishing foods first. So pick the greens, veggies, meats, eggs and nuts before the breads, potato bakes, deep fried goods and so on. The more good food you eat when you are hungry, the less room you will have to fill up on the food that contains very little nutritional value, including desserts. #4 Be Drink Savvy If you are partial to a festive drink or 3, then help yourself

and let your health be some part of the equation before you grab whatever is being offered. Drink a small glass of water in between each drink to rehydrate. We use Ningxia Red made from Wolfberry Pulp for hangovers and it works a treat. #5 DIY Health Food Have you tried eating healthy sweets? Not boring ones made from carrots and mung bean sprouts. Ones that taste so decadent you wonder how on earth they can be good for you! I have attached a recipe below to help you get in the festive mood but stay within your healthy limits.

Clean Eating White Christmas Bliss Balls (Naughty or Nice? You can add a few tablespoons of Cointreau to be naughty or a 10 drops of Young Living Tangerine Essential Oil to be nice!) Ingredients: 2 cups raw cashews 1 ½ cups desiccated coconut ¼ cup rice malt syrup 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ½ cup cranberries 1/3 cup pepitas 1/3 cup shelled pistachios 2 teaspoons melted coconut oil 100g Lindt 85% dark chocolate Method: Blitz cashews and coconut together well until you get a nice fine crumb and pour into a mixing bowl. Mix in all other ingredients, except the chocolate and mix well. Mixture should stick together when squeezed in the palm of your hand. Press and then roll into small sized balls gently and place onto baking tray lined with baking paper and freeze to set. Whilst your bliss balls are setting, melt your chocolate in a double boiler and then use it to half-dip your balls. Once again freeze to set, and store in an airtight container in the freezer or fridge.

Healthy Rum Free Rum Balls (Of course you can add the rum!)

Ingredients: 2 cups raw cashews 1 cup desiccated coconut 2 cups soaked pitted dates 4 tablespoons cocoa powder 3 tablespoons rice malt syrup 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil Option; 3 tablespoons of a good rum Method: Blitz cashews, dates and coconut together in small batches until you get a nice fine crumb. Pour into a mixing bowl and add all other ingredients and mix well. Mixture should stick together when squeezed in the palm of your hand. Roll into medium sized balls and place onto a baking tray lined with baking paper and freeze to set. Option is to drizzle with melted dark chocolate or roll in coconut. Store in an airtight container in fridge or freezer.

We all love Rosé, with more Australians than ever enjoying the pink tipple, but did you know that pale Rosé isn’t necessary drier and that it’s not made by mixing red and white wine?

Rosé is not made by mixing white and red wine It is very rare for Rosé to be made by mixing white and red wine – in fact, in France, this method is forbidden by law, except when it comes to Champagne. The majority of Rosé wines are made with red wine grapes using the skin contact method. The grape skins that give red wine that beautiful colour only spends a short time with the juice when making rosé, so the colour of the final wine is pink!

Rosé is not a new style of wine Although Rosé feels very trendy at the moment – can we get a #yeswayrosé? – it’s actually one of the oldest styles of wine. It is believed that many of the earliest red wines actually looked more like Rosé than red wine. This is because many of the winemaking methods, including harder pressing and longer maceration times that helps red grape skins impart more colour, were not used back in the day.

Rosé is not for keeping Despite the high acidity in Rosé, it is not a wine made for cellaring, so enjoy it young and fresh. The newer the vintage, the better and fresher!

Dispelling those Rosé myths… Aussie Rosés are not sweet The best Rosé wines in the world are thought to come from France, where they tend to be bone dry with flavours like cherry, musk or spice. Aussie Rosé is traditionally more berrylicious with strawberry and raspberry aromas, but due to the popularity of French Rosé, more Australian Rosés are being made in that typical, French dry and savoury style. The rise of domestic, dry Rosé is a win for consumers - as they are affordable and of great quality!

There is nothing better than setting out early on a beautiful day for a drive to the country. One place to visit is beautiful Kenilworth, only 40 minutes from Noosa...

t’s always a good idea to pack an overnight bag when you venture out along the country road to Kenilworth, with thoughts of generous serves of country food swimming around your mind; and dreams of shopping in the cute township and perhaps deciding to stay overnight and do the same thing all over again the next day. There’s so much to see and do in the town with its multifaceted array of cute boutiques, cafés, restaurants and bakeries, and of course, the country pub! And throughout the year the town plays host to some great events, a Kenilworth ArtsFest; Cheese, Wine and Food Fest; Sunshine Coast Ukulele Fiesta; Kenilworth Show and Rodeo, Campdraft; Quilt and Craft show and so much more. As I’ve wandered around the township talking to the locals, traders and visitors to the area, one thing has become apparent. The people who come to Kenilworth love the true country feel of a warm welcome, helpful and willing service - and the prospect of one-on-one communication, so lacking in big city shops and venues. The region is also a drawcard for those looking for a true country experience, with a good selection of B&B’s in the area, as well as natural wonderlands for campers to explore and enjoy. And, for those looking for a ‘farm to plate’ experience. On the edge of the shopping precinct, sits the iconic Kenilworth Dairy, Established in 1950, as one of the many rural chefs factories owned by the Kraft Corporation, until in the late 80s, when Kraft moved to centralisation and closed regional factories. At that time, two employees and a local businessman decided that perhaps some of the workers could buy the factory. And they did, renaming it to Kenilworth Country Foods, now Kenilworth Dairies. Now, times have changed - new owner but the dairy is still a local attraction for lovers of fine cheeses, yoghurts and the like. With an onsite café serving fresh lunches, morning and afternoon teas in the undercover entertaining area and surrounding gardens.

n the early 60s, the world was undergoing extraordinary social upheaval, triggered by post war prosperity and adolescent defiance; the tectonic plates of class, money and power were colliding - and socio-religious rules were crumbling. The new heroes of art, film, music and literature were working-class boys and girls. Before 1963, youth was largely acquiescent and acquisitive. After 1963, they were impossible to ignore. They were catered to. They were marketed to. They were listened to. They were heard. The Rolling Stones began their career during these fateful early years of the 1960s. Friends Mick Jagger and Keith Richards bonded over their mutual admiration of electric blues music from Chicago, and wanted to play music like Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf. Along with Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, Brian Jones and for a short time Ian Stewart, The Stones started to play the small clubs in London and quickly caught the eye of Andrew Loog Oldman, who in turn would become their manager ant the rest, art they say - is history. THE THIRD DIMENSION

When people talk about art, they usually are thinking about paintings, but fine art includes so much more, especially sculpture. The sculptor has to also think in three dimensions to achieve their aims and often on a challengingly large or small scale.

he Sunshine Coast shows a great depth of art forms and just starting with the carefully crafted wildlife in bronze by Bodo Muche from whales to a life size koala, the quality is immediately apparent. Bodo was German born, spent many years as a young adult living in Botswana and Tanzania where having left a career in taxidermy behind him to focus on the majesty of living creatures, he met and married Robyn, an Australian painter and they went on to build their own foundry in Queensland and a world-wide reputation. Sadly Bodo died in 2017, but leaving a legacy of works in collections from The Stockman’s Hall of Fame to game fishermen in Florida, but also still available editions of his beloved animals from around the world. In more ethereal forms are the organically inspired works by Craig Medson, who worked alongside the equally talented Fiona McCarron, producing works of visual and tactile strength. These stunning creations in marble, sandstone and bronze are contemporary and yet timelessly classical and these two were instrumental in establishing a new generation of sculptors of the region. Craig’s public works can be found internationally (including in South Korea, Spain and Turkey amongst many places) and both artists’ pieces are shown at ‘Art on Cairncross’ in the esteemed company of those by Rhyl Hinwood AM. Rhyl’s remarkable career encompasses such highlights as making the ceramic

Australian Coat of Arms in the House of Representatives in Parliament House, Canberra; over many decades carving in the sandstone of the Great Court of the University of Queensland and even ‘Mary Poppins’ in Maryborough which continually delights adults and children alike. Gallery works are just as impressive but more placeable sizes such as in bronze a serene dove and maquettes (e.g. Mary Magdalene) whose full size counterparts are to be found in sandstone in St. John’s Cathedral in Brisbane. Much smaller, but just as labour-intensive bronzes show how a cold and solid medium can be expertly used to convey movement and character. The endearing wombats, echidna and platypuses by Eddie Wentorf and the frillnecked lizards, fairy wrens and geckoes by Chris Gavins clearly demonstrate this and yet each little work has undergone every stage of the lost wax process, not least of all the final polishing and applying of a patina. Less traditional but just as engaging are the figuratively-based images from Elli Schlunke. “Belly Belle” is a beautifully rounded celebration of female form, but with a roughened surface showing the complexity of the subject. However, the range of mediums for sculpture are far from limited and this is certainly evident in the leather masks by Michael Taylor, which also show that colour can be an important factor as well as form. These are highly imaginative and eye-catching artworks influenced by a wide variety of topics from Greek mythology to marine biology. Each unique item is as inspiring as it is inspired and demonstrates skill levels in a difficult material, but with sensational results. The techniques required by Steven Thompson to create his magnificent steampunk sculptures are another consideration and beyond the immediate visual impact of his works is the added joy of pondering “What was that part previously used for?” This is all before venturing into ceramics, glass, wood, recycled materials, resins and more. So when looking for an artistic component to a home, an office or any space, it pays to think beyond the two dimensional, especially for less conventional areas. Many homes in this scenic region obviously incorporate plenty of windows to embrace nature’s art and this can even be enhanced by careful placement of sculptural works. As ever, art is a personal choice and will have different connections and meanings to different individuals, but there is such a diverse and fascinating array of works on display in the region.

As conder died in holloway sanatorium London in february 1909 driven to insanity by tertiary syphilis, those of you that know my writing would know that ‘Charles Conder and La Belle Pox‘ was my preferred title. If, however, you know my publisher, you know I would never got away with it!!

onder born in London in 1868, nurtured in India until the age of 4, until his mother died in 1873, when his engineer father sent him back to care, and school in England. He was always artistically inclined but his religious father would have none of it. He was sent to Sydney to join his uncle in the more robust Endeavour as a colonial land surveyor in 1886. He soon rebelled joining the staff of the Sydney Illustrated News as an illustrator, which in itself gave him an intro to the great artists of a Australian impressionism. In both Sydney and Melbourne he worked alongside Nerli, Streeton, and Roberts. In a three year period he painted masterpieces now beloved by collectors here in Australia, also catching his syphilis from his Sydney landlady. In 1890 he sailed for Europe and debauchery. In England and France he lived the good life. All the time painting the elegant ladies in England. Newquay in Cornwall, fashionable with the wealthy of the day, was a favourite haunt of conders up until his death. It was in Paris

where he was lauded for his lithography and delicate watercolours on silk that he caroused his health into an even worse state. His moving and shaking with Toulouse Lautrec and the Paris glitterati of the day saw him running to the beach and country to regain health. La belle epoque saw the cafes of Montparnasse teaming with life day and night. Artists, their models, actresses, the girls of Le Moulin Rouge, dance partners from Le Moulin de la Galette, and the ladies of the night, all heaped in together. It was hard for the mostly unwell Conder to cope . In 1901he changed tack and married a wealthy widow Stella Maris and tried to settle down with his new financial backstop, mainly to no avail, drinking heavily he fell out of favour with his patrons. His more interesting Paris work was done in pastel and crayon, pen and ink of the patrons and dancers inside the nightclubs. Radiation and convection occur across the skin and evaporation occurs from the respiratory tract, via panting. There are some physical traits in our pets that will limit/inhibit these cooling processes and thereby predispose heat stress: • Radiation and convection across the skin are inhibited by thick hair coats, heart disease (this affects the circulation to the skin), lack of acclimatization to the environment and obesity/ overweight body condition.

have noticed that heat stress/heat stroke has been quite topical on social media as the ambient temperatures herald the onset of summer. The reality is that heat stroke is the most serious heat-induced illness that can afflict our beloved pets during the summer months so it is important that we are aware of which pets are predisposed and what signs to look for in the early stages of this condition. There are two different types of heat stress/stroke: • Exertional (overheating while exercising) • Non exertional (classic heat stroke) In most pets, there will be a progression of clinical signs visible before the onset of heat stroke. It is important that we recognise these early signs and act on them as the onset of heat stroke puts our pets at risk of internal organ damage. • Heat cramp: muscle spasm associated with sodium and chloride depletion • Heat exhaustion: fatigue, weakness muscle tremors, vomiting, diarrhoea • Heat stroke: heat exhaustion with CNS disturbance, these patients generally have damage to the internal organs and are considered critical. Our pets do have inherent heat-dissipating mechanism that

• Evaporation from the respiratory tract is reduced by the conformation of the nose and airways (i.e brachycephalic breeds like pugs and bulldogs are not very efficient at panting and prone to overheating), laryngeal paralysis and collapsing trachea.

Heat stroke is preventable, if we are aware of our environment and our pets’ ability to cope with heat. If you have a pet that is a little on the heavy side or has a heart condition or airway condition that we know will affect their ability to dissipate heat it is important that we do not put them in a situation that may result in heat exhaustion or heat stroke. It is worth considering clipping your pet if they have a dense coat, dieting your pet if they are a little heavy and considering surgical enhancement of your pets’ nose and airways if they are a brachycephalic breed. I own a sausage dog and a toy bulldog, I clip both of them for summer and when my toy bulldog was 6 months he had his nares (nose) and soft palate operated on to ensure he would be able to breath efficiently as he grew up. If you see your pet showing any signs of heat cramps or exhaustion please contact your veterinarian for advice as by this stage your pet may need some directed cooling techniques and intravenous fluid rehydration to prevent the organ damage that comes with heat stroke. Start active cooling techniques as soon as you are aware that your dog is getting too hot, this is as easy as wetting your dogs’ whole body with tepid water and use a fan to blow air over the body, but be careful not to use water that is too cold as this may inadvertently reduce the circulation to the skin (like when your fingers go white in cold water) and therefore reduce the heat loss through the skin. With playgrounds and exercise equipment, as well as electric barbecues, and covered table and bench seating positioned around the area, it is the perfect place for a family get together. The carefree nature of the area is mirrored by the gentle wings of the pelicans and seagulls, as they soar high above before coasting in to the shoreline in search of the prime position for sleeping or checking out the chance of catching a fish down below; as those wishing to spend some time on the water hire kayaks,

paddle boards, small boats and pontoons from the local boat shed operators. If not so inclined, you can still enjoy the river by hopping aboard the ferry for a leisurely cruise. There’s even a sunset cruise available at The Jetty, where you can take a bottle of wine and a few nibbles along for the ride. The ferry provides glasses for you ease. Noosaville has always been a must-visit destination for great shopping and dining possibilities - and now it’s getting even more exciting. There has also been an exhilarating number of new restaurants opening in Noosaville to join longtime favourites like Flux and Thomas Corner , Noosa Boathouse and Waterfront. New restaurants include Barefoot Bar & Grill on Gympie Terrace offering diners water views and good breezes on a hot day or night; YoYo has also opened on the Terrace and is a sister bar to IS Tapas both serving tantalising cocktails and an eclectic range of wines; a new Greek restaurant, Santorini is adding to the dining scene, with a new breakfast menu soon; .and Secret Garden Café at Acres garden centre just up the road, is offering diners a touch of Spanish and Caribbean flavour in a garden setting. There’s never been a better time to visit for the day and stay on till the evening!!

AS NICE as I usually am to Noosa mayor Wellington, I cannot allow this column to hit the hot metal press without mentioning the fiasco surrounding short term letting in the Shire. It’s an issue that has most of the Noosa business community and not a small number of rank and file citizens in a tizz. In its attempt to exercise controls over Airbnb, the council has twice come up with schemes designed to manage short term letting but which have instead enraged many people in the community because of their complexity and cost. The council is now having a third crack at getting it right with lawyers eyes’ glinting at the tussle in the courts that seems likely to ensue. 112

IT’S WELL known that bull sharks traverse the usually peaceful waters of Noosa River as they move upstream to breed in Lake Cooroibah. True to their name, these fellas can be aggressive but they seem to co-exist quietly with us humans who share their waterway. Well, that’s what I thought until recently when my misapprehension that there had never been a shark attack in our fine river was shattered. As the Wide Bay and Burnett Times reported in April 1908, “a young man named Ely” had been admitted to Gympie Hospital after “working his net in Lake Cooroibah, being seized by a shark and a piece of the calf of the leg being taken away”. It seems Ely had to make a long and painful journey by coach and train from Tewantin to Gympie, where he was said to be resting “fairly comfortable”. NOOSA resident and former Australia Post chief flack Rowland Hill and his colleague Robert Brooks have been recently active getting people hyped up over, to quote the Noosa News headline, ‘Noosa’s choking on its own magnetic charm’. In this they echo mayor Wellington’s concerns and also those of mysterious local figure Dr Michael Gloster who, as long ago as 1982 in the esteemed but now defunct Bulletin magazine, was referring to the “resident-tourism conflict” which continues to pain him to this day. In that year a vacant urban block in Noosa sold for a nose-bleeding $31,181 – the highest price in Queensland at the time. I bet Dr Gloster didn’t think back then he’d

still be perturbing about the same issue of those pesky visitors 40 years on. WHILE I reflect on tourism and the “visitor cap” that Dr Gloster continues to plug for…. Tourism Noosa’s brand new CEO, Melanie Anderson, has expressed her disappointment that much of the negative public commentary promoting the notion that Noosa is “choking” with visitors is either incorrect or has been taken out context. Ms Anderson wishes that people would verify their supposed facts with her organisation. “We don’t see the term ‘overtourism’ as an appropriate description of our challenges in Noosa,” Ms Anderson has told members. And a recent survey conducted by Tourism Noosa shows that 80% of Noosa residents approve of tourism because it’s good for the community and economy, over 90% of residents agree tourism is positive and 80% agree it contributes to increased property values. On the other hand, more than 40% of businesses say they would not be operational without tourism. IT ONLY remains for me to wish you a peaceful and sublime Noosa Christmas and a new year full of what 2020 should bring – good health, good times and clear vision.

UST as Noosa Shire was wondering whether there would even be a contest for the mayoral election in March, up popped a truly formidable candidate, ex-barrister Clare Stewart, who seems set to make a real race of it against mayor Tony Wellington. As I write elsewhere in this issue, Ms Stewart, previously unsullied by the stress of politics, is well equipped for the task of defeating Cr Wellington just as she overcame the serious life challenges, written about in her memoir, Standing On My Own Two Feet. A host of new candidates for the councillor election (six to be chosen) has also appeared and it looks like there will be a Melbourne Cup field challenging the incumbents. Could change be on the agenda in the Noosa community?
