Editors desk WELCOME TO OUR SENSATIONAL SUMMER ISSUE…
22 Years Young and feeling it.
W
e’re coming out of lockdown just in time for families and friends to enjoy Christmas and the Festive Season together. Editor/ Publisher Kaylene Murray
Obviously, we’ll still have to be careful, and continue to carry-on with all those safety protocols we’ve learned over the past two years - extra washing of hands, wearing a mask if we don’t feel well - and of course, taking care when we are around older relatives and friends or those with compromised immune systems. But this is our chance to get it right; to ensure that we can live with Covid in our country and around the world, for those wishing to travel again, by being sensible and vaccinated. Just in time for the party season, we have sourced some of the finest fashion available in Noosa, as well as the accessories to complement your new look. We’ve also highlighted some stunning jewellery for your loved ones - or just that perfect piece for yourself. Most homes will be looking their best for the Festive season, as we dress them with new colour palettes and home furnishings, to add that extra something to herald the summer season.

You will also find some exceptional properties available for sale, for those wishing to upsize, downsize or sea change in the Noosa region. With property prices at an all-time high, it’s the time to find the perfect Real Estate agent to provide you with all the information you need to make to right choice - in the right area, to suit your personal taste, needs and requirements.
We have been busy this season finding beautiful, healthy and delectable recipes - to ensure your entertaining is a pleasure and not an exhausting cooking frenzy for you. You need to enjoy the party just as much as your guests - and we’re here to make sure that's possible for you. Also, check out our cocktail recipes and perfect wines for any occasion this summer. This issue we introduce you to another side of The Sweet Assassin, Adriano Zumba who has made Noosa his home. We also look at the stellar career and life of musical theatre star, dancer and actress Caroline O’Connor, who also now calls Noosa home. We wish to take this opportunity to thank all our avid readers, who eagerly await each issue; our loyal and longstanding clients as well as new; our family and friends - and this year Labrador Rescue who found the perfect match for our broken hearts, a 7-yr old chocolate Labrador called Albert. We also send our Best Wishes for the Christmas season to all the frontline workers doctors, nurses, ambos, paramedics, firefighters, police, who have been called upon to go above and beyond over the past two years. Also, all military staff both at home and abroad. We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful and bright New Year. Please read and enjoy.

NOOSA SUMMERS ARE GLORIOUS FOR SO MANY REASONS! Not only because here we are in the most beautiful and soul fulfilling community (with the added bonus of glorious environment whether beach or bush!), but we are about to open our borders (at the time of writing) and celebrate a Christmas like no other!
T
his brings such joy. That we can again welcome our families, friends and visitors from southern states for the holiday period, sends a shiver up my spine! Thoughts of enjoying hugs, stories and festive food under a shady tree - with the smell of the ocean and gritty sand between our toes, keeps the spirits up as we debate in Chamber. As well, to be able to visit our grandies interstate without the risk of getting caught over the border - is a Christmas gift in itself! There is also some trepidation. Transitioning into the next phase of Covid has much responsibility. For our businesses, our frontliners, and all of us as individuals - there are roles and responsibilities. These include, ensuring we have everything in place – enough testing clinics, hospital capacity if needed and yes - patience. As with welcoming what could be large numbers, there will be road congestion, wait times in our emergency departments, (try to avoid incidents when scampering over rocks, celebrating or biking over our network trails) and yes, limited carparks. So where possible, take the chilled route, and walk/bike or bus, including those council funded free buses, and enjoy a slower pace, taking the opportunity to immerse, chat and get fitter. As we are so spoilt for choice, to decide where to congregate with loved ones is always a journey in itself. There are so many memorable and stunning locations, whether a large family event or for a bit of romance 😊 I love nothing better than finding that ‘instagramable’ nook - whether it be sitting on the grassy roof of the Cooroy Library, ‘forest bathing’ along the Cooloola Great Walk, or taking our pooches for an unhurried swim at the doggy beach. Even though I love a homemade picnic, the thought of doing nothing brings glee, and that we have awesome eateries that do ‘take out’ means I can have my camembert and eat it too. As I rarely get to spend time at home, always on my Santa list is to shut the gate, don the gardening gloves, and crash tackle the overgrowth and dreaded Singapore Daisy😊 To offset my allergic reaction to that determined ‘daisy’, something soothing, preferably a glass of bubbles. And in line with our own brand of celebrating, to ensure however and wherever we do it, to leave only our footprints by taking away our
rubbish, not terrifying any of our furry or feathered buds, or trashing our beautiful home. Mindfulness delivers greater gifts than we often realise, and there is a deep sense of peace when we know we have enhanced our world, not diminished. Fabulous festivities require your very own Noosa toolkit. Plenty of masks with Christmas glitter and messages, sunscreen, hat, hand sanitizer, berocca, an exploring map and wish list or hit list. Add in a couple of great friends, some food, and heartfelt wishes, and in amongst that - ‘responsibility’ I spoke about. We want to remember this Christmas as one of awesome fun, where Santa comes to town, not a severe Covid outbreak. If we all do our bit, we can minimise impacts and welcome in the New Year with panache - by saying goodbye to the pandemic and starting the journey to endemic. How? Masks, hygiene and the 1.5m distancing. Get tested if you have symptoms. Vaccinate if you have not yet and intend to. And use the QLD App so our tracers can do their job. And don’t forget. Whether a resident or visitor, be flood/fire/storm aware and ready by having your ‘evac’ plan and bag on standby. You would be amazed in our fires 2 years ago how many left medications, passports and phones behind, and even though our evacuation centres are wonderful facilities, they cannot help with those. Whilst digesting all of this, make plans for some Noosa therapy. Whether retail, recreational, yummy fare or a much-needed massage, it is all available here - and what better excuse than holiday time? Merry Christmas Noosa!! And if you, for any reason, also have a need to get ‘down and dirty’ I always have a spare pair of gloves for that date with ‘daisy’!

THERE LIES PASSION AND LIFE. A LITTLE FIREBALL OF ENERGY - WHO RADIATES PURE JOY AND POSITIVE ENERGY, I AM IMMEDIATELY ENTHRALLED. I CAN TELL STRAIGHT AWAY THIS IS A WOMAN WHO KNOWS HERSELF, WHO LOVES WHAT SHE DOES AND IS ENTHUSIASTIC TO SHARE HER STORY.

aroline O’Connor was born in England, to Irish parents and moved to Adelaide, Australia at a young age. Her talent and charisma had been noticed straight away, so the family packed up, no questions asked - and moved to Sydney, where more opportunities loomed. In Caroline's words “my mum was my number one fan”, so proud and driven, the privilege she had of being so supported by her family is still something she holds dearly in her heart. The youngest of four, she describes her dad as a true gentleman. She performed at the opening of the Sydney Opera House, dancing at the age of twelve. No mean feat for a young child. Over the years, she performed there many more times, developing a connection to this beautiful icon of Australia. She was singing on stage there the night her mother passed, which speaks volumes about this amazing woman’s journey and soulful connection to what she does.
A triple threat, dancing, singing, and acting, her achievements are next to none. Performing worldwide in numerous shows, the dedication, commitment, and passion she brings to her work have earned her the title the “Queen of Australian Theatre’. Last year Caroline was awarded an AM (Order of Australia) for her extraordinary service to this medium. From her appearance in the Baz Luhrmann Moulin Rouge, to her Broadway debut in Chicago, to playing Judy Garland in the End of the Rainbow, to performing in BOMBSHELLS, a one woman play written especially for her, to performing personally for Queen Elizabeth and Princess Diana, these achievements are just the icing on the cake. Winning numerous awards in her career, performing at the 2013 Tony Awards at Radio City Hall in New York and being the only Australian to appear on Broadway three times, there is no end to what this dynamo of a lady can achieve.
The first thing I notice about this woman as she enters the cafe is the glint in her eyes.

nd here she is, at this time in her life calling Noosa home. With her partner in crime, husband Barrie Shaw by her side, they decided to buy a house in Noosa, when Covid stopped the entertainment industry in its tracks. Sadly, more than any other industry - the Arts have suffered in this time. Caroline described to me with great sadness, how it was so difficult emotionally and mentally for her not to be able to perform in front of an audience. She thrives from that connection and energy, and how lost she felt at first when it all just stopped. Having had the opportunity to perform just once in QPAC in the last two years, she recalls the overwhelming emotion and energy that she felt when the music started. She got down on her knees and kissed the ground, so happy to feel connected to her true purpose and art again. The audience loved it, erupting with applause and laughter, and I am shown once more not only her dedication to her craft, but how the love of performing is so natural to her, like the air that she breathes. A bit like 35 years, himself an accomplished musician, theirs is a love story, of which fairy tales are born. Himself, being described as a fellow triple threat with his sublime talent of playing the sax, clarinet, flute, piccolo, and even the didgeridoo, this multi-instrumentalist keeps her on her toes. With a definite nostalgia in her voice, she tells me of how they first met. “We heard each other before we saw each other”. They were both performing at a Cabaret show in London. He was playing the sax, she was singing. They could hear each other, there was a magic in the air, but their paths hadn’t physically crossed. This finally happened at a theatre party and the chemistry was instant. A total yin and yang- but just like the symbol, they fit.

Days in Noosa are spent enjoying the beautiful nature, boating, leisurely walks, jet skiing - all with their new puppy in tow, who even has a life jacket too! Barrie has always wanted to be near the water, Caroline tells me, he finds it very soothing. Even though Caroline admits she sometimes misses the buzz of the city life, moments are spent on zoom meetings, a book is in the process, and she finds herself settling in here slowly, but surely, appreciating the warmth of the people around her.

e share a laugh of the transition of working every night for the last 40 years in dynamic cities all around the world, to being home every night for dinner, with most restaurant kitchens closing by 8.30 pm here in Noosa. Once again, I am totally humbled by her down to earth, wonderful nature.
This lady is definitely a people’s person. When she commits to a role, her whole essence dives into the heart and soul of that character. And the whole team becomes family. She develops an intense relationship with all her coworkers and goes above and beyond to bring substance and life to that role. She will be the first one to arrive for rehearsal and the last one to leave. To put it simply - she just loves what she does. The intricacy, the illusion, the depth, the passion, the life. Her theatre truly is her world and I feel so honoured that a person of this calibre has decided to call Noosa home. And, for those waiting for Caroline’s next big role, be sure to check out the websites about the new Australian production of the musical, Nine to Five - you’ll find a very familiar ‘Noosa’ face in the line-up!

elebrating the 50-year anniversary of Pearl, Janis Joplin’s iconic album, Brisbanebased vocalist Janice Smithers delivered an amazing recreation of Janis Joplin’s unique vocal style and stage persona, backed by the rockin' All Star Band, recently at The Magestic Theatre in Pomona. The 2 hour live show took the ‘dressed to impress 60s loving’ audience on a journey through the life and music of a legendary rock icon. This was more than just a tribute show - it invited patrons to step back to the Woodstock era, and join Janis on a ride through music and stories.
Accompanied by narrator Sean Trethaway and a cast of characters. The journey through Janis’s tumultuous - and short life was highlighted by the sounds of her classic tracks performed live, including Piece of My Heart, Me & Bobby McGee, Cry Baby, Ball & Chain, Mercedez Benz and many more. And, the story also included songs by The Doors and Jimi Hendrix. A
record amount of $9,600 was raised on the day due to the generosity of local businesses and people through sponsorship, cash donations and prizes for the various raffles and silent auctions. All funds raised went to Breast cancer research! Thanks go to major sponsor Bridgestone, and Diana’s Shoes and the Tewantin RSL and to the major monetary contributors who wished to remain anonymous.
The ladies got into the spirit of the day by dressing in pink and then dug deep to buy pink ribbons, raffle tickets, entered putting and chipping comps and paid for pro’s shots and champers on the course. Whilst Breast Cancer is a cancer that touches many of us, the spirit on the day was to also to celebrate the survivors and the lives of people we’ve lost, as well to show our support for those currently battling this illness. Young Noosa Golf Club member Tama Stana donned wings to get into the spirit of the Noosa Golf Club Women’s Pink Ball Breast Cancer golf fundraising day, with Patty Neale, Marg Colwell, Linda Laws and Charmaine McCormick, who were the winners of the golf event.

EUMUNDI WAS FORMED OUT OF PIONEER NECESSITY AND QUEENSLAND RAILWAY NORTHBOUND PUSH AROUND LATE 1800'S.
M
odern day result is a quaint country town of predominantly Queensland style buildings forming a main street and surrounding area. Massive war memorial trees, splendid School of Arts building and the quaint CWA are noteworthy landmarks together with a Historical Museum and two imposing Hotels having witnessed days when railway passengers were compelled to stop at Eumundi for continuing their journey north by Cobb & Co horse drawn carriage. Reaching Eumundi by car via Bruce Highway from Brisbane takes 90 minutes. A further 15 to Noosa Heads. Eumundi town evolved through timber getting, dairy farming, banana and ginger growing. Recently awarded "Best Markets in Australia" the very successful markets of Eumundi are open every Wednesday and Saturday 7.30 until 2pm. If challenging times require creative solutions, the fact many established corporate entities started life trading at markets prompted Eumundi Square facilities to be set in place for providing trader development opportunities. Forward looking traders can now have a permanent business address and collective facilities while retaining individual trading identity. Further to market days, Eumundi Square opens to the public on Friday mornings 8.30 am until 1pm. Rain or shine, around one hundred traders welcome visitors to participate in activities such as facial make up demonstrations or fashion and jewellery trial adventures. Pain relief applications and many forms of product appreciation are discussed at a leisurely pace and without obligation to purchase. Heaps of car parking

THE SWEET Colour, creativity, macarons, sensational cakes, energy and passion.
Adriano Zumbo WORDS AMANDA WILLIAMS ENTER ADRIANO ZUMBO, THE SWEET ASSASSIN. A WARM AND HUMBLE CHARACTER SO DIFFERENT THAN WHAT I IMAGINED. SOFTLY SPOKEN WITH A GENTLE WISDOM IN HIS EYES, I WAS INTERESTED TO HEAR WHAT THIS MAN HAD TO SAY ABOUT HIS RISE TO FAME, HIS JOURNEY INTO THE LIMELIGHT AND HOW HE FELT SETTLING IN THE QUIETER, TRANQUIL SURROUNDS OF THE SUNSHINE COAST - MAKING THIS HIS NEW HOME.
A
driano is the only son of Italian parents who migrated here in the 60’s. He grew up in the tiny town of Coonamble, NSW, 164 kilometres northwest of Dubbo, the only Italian family in town. His parents owned the local IGA, where he developed his sweet tooth. Running wild and free like young boys do, he has memories of jogging happily with a football in one hand and something yummy and naughty in the other. Having the freedom to indulge in junk food was a big joy of his childhood days. Freedom and

his tastebuds, dancing alongside one another, who could ask for more. At the age of fifteen, he decided to trade in carefree, childhood days of the country and move to Sydney, where he lived with his sister. He got a job as an apprentice pastry chef through the paper, and there his journey began, just like that. At a young age he also travelled to Paris, doing courses, and learning from the worlds best. Such ambition and focus from such a young age. A few years on, he has his own business in Balmain. People are talking, there is definite recognition of a genius brewing beneath the surface, someone pushing boundaries - and, doing something a little different with sweet things. A few write ups in the paper, then comes the phone call from MASTERCHEF. And the rest, as they say - is history. One thing I noticed about Adriano, as relaxed and quietly spoken as he is, is that his success and achievements are born out of passion, focus- and hard work. Being a pastry chef is all about extreme precision, and dedication, Adriano explained.

his man has a single vision and is 100% dedicated to making that vision a reality. That combined with a little bit of creative genius, and not being afraid to take a risk or two, has led to this amazing story unfolding for him. Now, he is settled here at Peregian Springs on the Sunshine Coast, with his beautiful fiancé Nelly Riggio. Life is travelling at a different speed. Being a regular visitor to Noosa for the annual Food and Wine Festival, Adriano always had a dream to make this his home one day.
24

Giving recognition to all the great chefs and restaurants here, he admitted though, that he really loves just relaxing and cooking a bit of Italian at home. Paying homage to his Italian roots, he really enjoys a great Italian pasta and simple salad at home - with a nice bottle of wine. However, I think Adriano still has a little fire in his belly. A new business venture is brewing, which he is co -creating with his partner as we speak. To start with they will be serving subtlety, mind-blowing takeaway desserts from a humble abode in Rene Street, Noosaville, with the potential to bloom into something more in the future. It will be a case of
‘watch this space’ for the evolution of this Sweet Assassin’s creative endeavours. After his rise to fame with all the flavour and texture he gave to the MACARON, what else will he reinvent or birth himself with his nostalgic flair? To put it in his own words, he may just have “one more crack at it”. It will be the ZUMBO TEST. All I know is that after having the pleasure of chatting with this lovely man, passion combined with humility - a little bit of drive goes a long way, and I can’t wait to see what comes out of his kitchen. In the words of Harriet Van Horne “Cooking is like love. It should be entered into with abandon or not at all”.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC
How, on the eve of her ninth studio album, MIRUSIA LOUWERSE’ S global acclaim has never taken her away from the simple pleasures of the Queensland coast.
Words: MATT LEE André was looking for someone to join him on tour and a few prospective options had gone by the wayside. “Perhaps it was a classic case of ‘right place, right time’, because with 48 hours I was stood performing in front of him in Maastricht, and almost straight away he asked me to accompany him in the spotlight.”
MIRUSIA as ‘Mary Poppins with ANDRÉ RIEU
THERE ARE SLIDING DOORS MOMENTS IN EVERY LIFE, EVERY CAREER, AND MIRUSIA LOUWERSE UNDOUBTEDLY HAD HER OWN WHEN A LOYAL AUNT SENT AN EMAIL TO CLASSICAL MUSIC ICON ANDRÉ RIEU, TIPPING OFF THE DUTCH VIOLINIST AND CONDUCTOR ABOUT THE BRISBANE-BORN SINGER’S TALENT.
T
here is so much about how it started that just seems too inconceivable,” she begins. “It’s like something you may see in a film whilst uttering, ‘well that wouldn’t happen in real life’, but in my case it did!” Rieu picked up the email, most likely buried amongst an inbox full of fan mail and other dedicated relatives looking to set their loved ones on the path to stardom. “The timing was incredible because

MIRUSIA’S STORY LENDS CONFIDENCE TO THE PREMISE THAT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE IN LIFE, HOWEVER GREAT THE ODDS APPEAR. The youngest ever recipient of Dame Joan Sutherland Award, Mirusia has always had talent in abundance, and would surely have still garnered acclaim of some sort had her acquaintance with Rieu not accelerated matters. “This was the only thing I ever really wanted to do,” says the Queensland Conservatorium graduate, who achieved a Bachelor of Music in Performance in Classical Voice. Previously she had attended Ormiston College. “I think in the early days I had phases where some of the components were there, and others weren’t. Perhaps I had the voice without the stage presence, or the stage presence without the confidence. “The art of entertaining is really to find a way of combining those elements, whilst ensuring you can stay at that level night after night. Finding a way to do that is something André taught me, and I think that’s why our partnership has lasted so long.” Indeed, Mirusia has accompanied Rieu on countless tours since 2007, and the pair have released an album together, Waltzing Matilda, which topped the ARIA charts.
through different phases and transitions, or the likelihood is people will stop listening to it. “What motivates me is, of course, pushing ideas and perceptions; but mostly it’s about performing and making people happy. And so much of that is what I try to bring out in the next generation, who because of the internet will have an abundance of choice that we simply never had growing up. She has also performed at the coronation concert of the King of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander, a special moment given the 36year-old’s Dutch ancestry. “Growing up around Brisbane and the Gold Coast was always very special to me, but with Dutch parents I have always felt a draw towards the Netherlands and the different life and experiences my grandparents would have had there. “I have visited and toured there enough times to know it’s a very different way of life, and I can’t pretend I’m not glad my holidays were on gorgeous beaches rather than trekking around cobbled Amsterdam streets,” she laughs. “However I cherish who I am very much, and I want my children, in the same way, to understand how it is they came to arrive at where they are.” In that sentence, Mirusia references daughter Sascha, who arrived in December 2017. Eighteen months previously, the soprano had married long-term partner Youri Wystyrk, and admits she could never have ascended the heights she has without the love, support and kindness of her husband who, like her, is three quarters Dutch and a quarter Polish. “He has been my rock through so many experiences – most of them good, though of course there have been occasions when the pressure or the weight of expectation has really been terrifying and I have relied on the confidence he brings forward, always.” Indeed, the confidence to hit the right notes hasn’t always been the most nerve-wracking part of the singer’s route towards entertaining people. “Everyone says how much André likes to put on a show, and the music is really a celebration that also brings entertainment and the spectacle.
“FOR THAT REASON, I FEEL NOW IS THE TIME THAT WE SHOULD BE MAKING OPERA AS ACCESSIBLE AND WIDE AS WE CAN SO AS TO BRING THROUGH THE NEXT GENERATION OF STARS.” That message certainly conveys itself in her ambassadorial work for the Australian Children’s Music Foundation. Her belief that music is a vital mechanism for children goes far beyond simply wishing to see the next incarnation of operatic singers. “When I was growing up, I used music to build confidence and happiness,” she admits. “It is possible to hide behind a song and the words of a song in a way that still brings a child right to the front of the stage. It is such an intelligent form of drama and performance that can set a young mind up for countless real-world experiences. “I ALSO THINK MUSIC TAKES US TO THE MOST INCREDIBLE PLACES, WHERE HAPPINESS, CONTENTMENT, EMPATHY AND CREATIVITY ALL FLOW.” What’s incredible special about Mirusia, is that in geographical terms, at least, one of those places she mentions is back to where it all began. The singer currently resides in Redland City, and admits she feels little inclination to move away from her childhood base, despite the global attention her voice has garnered, and is certain too again in 2022 with the news of a new album Songbird, and accompanying tour. “While I love to venture abroad and want to give my all to entertain people in as many places as possible, ultimately I always feel I owe my hometown the biggest duty of all. “You can always travel and you can always come back, and that’s why having a home in a place you truly love is perhaps the most important thing of all.”
“On occasions I have really had to fight back the fear when it’s been a case of elaborate dance routines, or being winched in as Mary Poppins whereby I am descending over an audience from 70ft in the air! “THERE ARE MANY TIMES WHEN YOU THINK TO YOURSELF, ‘THIS JOB IS ABOUT MUCH MORE THAN JUST SINGING’!” Indeed, for some critics, Mirusia’s brand of accessible opera doesn’t sit as comfortably as you would think it might. Referred to as ‘the unconventional pop star’, even her most recent album, 2019’s A Salute to The Seekers, was a celebration of mainstream music with a classical twist. In many ways, the tag is both a credit and an insult. While she is one of the few stars who has managed to bridge the gap into popular music, she still counters traditionalists who feel she is taking the soprano image out of its natural environment. “I think sometimes we can all have perceptions and ideas about what something should sound like and what something should look like,” she says. “In reality, music is an evolving thing that has to move

Filling3 cups soaked Cashews ¾ cup Coconut oil ½ cup Coconut nectar 1 pink Dragonfruit, flesh only ¼ cup Lime juice ¼ cup Coconut milk 1/8 tsp Salt Method: For the base, place your chai tea mix in a blender of coffee grinder and wiz to make a fine powder. Place the almonds in your food processor and blitz for a couple of seconds so they break down, then add the coconut flakes, dates, activated buckwheat, chai spice and salt. Wizz until the mixture breaks down and then starts to come together. It should hold together when you press it in between your fingers. Press the base into a 9 inch springform
cake tin and then pop in the fridge while you make th filling. For the dragonfruit layer, soak your cashews in water for at least 2 hours, then drain and rinse well. In the bottom of your blender place the chopped dragon fruit, lime juice, coconut nectar, salt and coconut milk. Add the cashews on top and then blend, slowly adding the coconut oil in a running stream. Keep blending until the mixture is completely smooth with no grit at all. A high speed blender works best for this. When ready, remove the base from the fridge and pour the filling on top. Place the cake in your freezer and allow to set for around 3-4 hours. When the cake is set, decorate as you please with fresh fruit, fried fruit, seeds, nuts and flowers. You can serve straight from the freezer or allow to defrost and soften slightly.
d e r e w o P s t n a l P y B “IT’S ALMOST DIFFICULT NOW TO REMEMBER A TIME WHEN OUR DINNER TABLE WAS NOT A RAINBOW SPREAD OF WHOLE-FOOD, PLANT-BASED DISHES.” – JAMES. BUT ACCORDING TO JAMES YATES AND CHANTEL ROSE, THERE WAS SUCH A TIME. A TIME WHEN, LIKE MANY OF US, THEY WERE BROUGHT UP CONSUMING A TYPICAL WESTERN DIET, HIGH IN ANIMAL PROTEINS AND GRAINS, USING THE COLOUR OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES TO SIMPLY FILL IN THE GAPS.
O
n the outside, with their athletic silhouettes and dazzling smiles, the couple seemed like the picture of mainstream health. Moreover, their exciting entrepreneurial lifestyle, where the couple spent years travelling around the world, coaching and empowering others to live the life of their dreams, helped distract them from what was going on internally as they “hustled” towards living out their passions. However not all was as it seemed, and over time, something just felt “off”. “We burnt ourselves out… and our adrenals were shot,” Chantel said. “Our lifestyle at the time was amazing, but we had taken such a linear approach to health that we neglected looking after our internal terrain, and so something had to change…” After some ongoing health challenges, the couple went through a few medical tests only to be informed by a GP that they would not be able to have children as a result. This news was unexpected and devastating for them. “We had been working so hard financially to put ourselves in a position to be stay at home parents and, in a single moment, it felt like that dream had been taken away.” said James. However, both saw this as a positive challenge to change what was no longer serving them and instead of allowing their challenges to become their reality, they began exploring natural remedies to optimise their wellbeing and reclaim their energy. “One of the first things I did when I received the news was frame it in the right lens. I believed in my body’s ability to heal with the right mindset and the right nutrition.” – Chantel Together, they embarked on a self-care and holistic health journey that opened their eyes to the power of the human body and by exploring ancient wisdom and remaining curious around how to optimise their health, wellbeing, and energy. A few years later they were blessed with the gift of a child. This incredible journey had them casting aside everything they “believed they knew” about wellbeing and their curiosity and intuition lead them to exploring and consuming primarily a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle. Whole- food Plant-based, or WFPB is a term for eating plant-based foods that are minimally processed and are in their whole form. It avoids animal products and is free from artificial sugars and processed ingredients including oils. This lifestyle worked well for the couple and breathed life back into their bodies. And while every meal they consume now is based on a WFPB diet, their transition was not overnight. “Awareness is the key to transformational change,” says James. “The more we connect in to how we feel after consuming particular foods, or even cooking at how feel in particular environments, or around certain people, we can often sense what feels best for our bodies- or at least, what isn’t serving us.” From their experience, James and Chantel point out that their approach wasn’t about cutting out animal products and replacing them with substitutes, which are often highly processed and high in salt. “For us, making the shift to a plant-based lifestyle was not about finding
textured proteins and processed foods to replace the meats and animal products we'd previously been eating because our goal was to get as close to nature as possible and discover a whole new way of looking at food.” The key, says the couple is to make sure that you have done your research and you are well supported by those who know what they are talking about, so surrounding yourself with the right professionals are key. The couple started their plant-based journey by steadily eliminating the foods that were causing the most discomfort. First, they cut out processed foods–including everything served in cans and soaked in preservatives. “Why processed foods are called foods in the first place completely eludes me!” James remarks. Processed foods can often undergo chemical processing that is laden with empty calories, toxic preservatives, artificial colouring, artificial flavouring and artificial texturants to name a few. Over time, these foods have the potential to contribute to health complications beyond an upset stomach. Next, they replaced dairy with nut-based milks like almond and hazelnut milks and they then cut out all meats and eggs. It was during this elimination process that James and Chantel began to feel a significant change. They had more energy than they ever did before. Physically, mentally and emotionally, they felt simply fantastic. This encouraged them to dive deeper, where they began to incorporate raw, whole-food, plant-based foods in their diet and increased their fruit intake, especially in the summer months when there is such an array of high vibe options at the local Sunshine Coast markets. They also focused on which combinations of fruits and vegetables worked best together and the quantities that are optimal for a well-rounded nutritional intake, such as ensuring each meal was packed with a good balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fats. Moreover, they took care to source plant-based foods that are locally grown and organic as much as possible. That’s because local, organic foods not only support the local economy, but they also can also contain higher nutritional value whilst containing less environmental contaminants like pestcides, chemical fertilisers, and polluted water. The more they learned, the cleaner they ate. And they never looked back. “We’ve never felt better. We’ve never had more energy. It has worked for us in the most incredible ways and it’s inspired us to share our journey and open people’s hearts to discover different ways to make the whole-food, plant-based approach work for them.” – Chantel At the end of the day, they don’t advocate that everyone needs to follow in their footsteps and believe that everyone should do what feels right for them. However, they invite everyone they meet to embark on a journey of self-love and self-care by making healthy, conscious food choices. It’s transformed their lives and it has the potential to transform yours too.

Why wine labels are important for vegans With plant-based the fastest growing food category as many of us switch to a healthier lifestyle, not only for our health but for our planet, we shine the spotlight on wines to understand if they are all vegan. Or should we be asking deeper questions?
W
e spoke with the Chief Winemaker at Angove Family Winemakers, Tony Ingle, makers of Angove Organics, Australia’s leading certified organic wine, to gain a firsthand understanding of what plant-based enthusiasts should look for in their favourite wine. BUT FIRST, WE NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT MAKES A WINE VEGAN FRIENDLY. With more and more people switching and actively trying to eat more plant-based foods, the availability of alternatives has increased, including vegan wines. It seems logical to think that wines are vegan, but in fact the production techniques commonly used in wineries can make wine unfriendly for vegans. Wine fining process When a wine is being fermented the yeast produces natural sediment. Fining is about removing this unwanted material from wine post ferment while still in the cellar. It is part of the clarification and stabilisation process and involves adding a substance to the wine that will flush out
54
NoosaStyle
certain elements that may cause a wine to look hazy or affect its aroma, colour or bitterness. Fining removes ‘colloids’, which are molecules that include tannins, phenolics and polysaccharides. FINING AGENTS ARE OFTEN ANIMAL DERIVED PROTEINS LIKE CASEIN, ALBUMIN, GELATIN AND ISINGLASS. Legally if milk, egg or isinglass are used in the winemaking and trace elements can be found in the wine’s analysis they must be included on the label. According to Tony, Angove Family Winemakers only use the softer, free-run juice from the grapes for their wines. This juice contains very few solids or bitter components and therefore only requires a very small amount, if any, of fining, using a fining agent derived from either pea or potato products. For a plant-based wine drinker, this means that to be truly sure of a wine’s vegan status look for wines labelled VEGAN FRIENDLY or SUITABLE FOR VEGANS on the bottles. Angove’s award-winning range of Certified Organic Wines does not use any animal-based fining products or tested inputs in the winemaking process, so you can be truly sure that you are selecting a plant-based option that’s truly good for you and the planet. 100g icing sugar optional: natural yoghurt, to serve On the day Preheat the oven to 180°C and generously grease a 2-litre non-stick bundt tin with butter. Place the remaining butter in a food processor with the honey, flour, almonds, vanilla paste and a pinch of sea salt. Crack in the eggs, finely grate in the tangerine zest (reserving some for garnish) and blitz until smooth. Pour the mixture into the bundt tin, scraping it out of the processor with a spatula, then jiggle the tin to level it out. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until golden and an inserted skewer comes out clean. Leave for a few minutes, then turn out on to a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Method: Sift the icing sugar into a bowl, then squeeze and stir in enough tangerine juice to make a thick drizzle. Pour or spoon over the cool cake, easing some drips down the sides in an arty way, then sprinkle over the reserved zest. Peel the remaining tangerines and slice into rounds, to serve on the side. Add the breadcrumbs and fry until crunchy and golden, tossing regularly. Leave to cool. For the sauce, whisk up the mayo, yoghurt, ketchup, half the lemon juice and a dash each of Worcestershire and Tabasco sauce, then season to perfection, tasting and tweaking. Finely shred the lettuces. Halve the cucumber lengthways and scrape out the seeds with a teaspoon, then chop into 1cm dice. Quarter the cherry tomatoes. Snip the cress. Halve and destone the avocado, squeeze the flesh into a blender with the remaining lemon juice and blitz until smooth, loosening with a splash of water, if needed, then season to perfection. Line up six clean wide-necked jam jars or
glasses ready to fill. Divide the lettuce between them, followed by the cucumber and tomatoes, gently pressing down as you build the layers. Spoon in the cool, crispy pancetta crumbs, top with the cress, then sprinkle in the shrimp and prawns. Drizzle in the sauce and add a pinch of cayenne to each. Spoon over the blitzed avo, cover and you’re done. Perfect Prawns: A good fishmonger will have a nice selection of prawns – I like to use a mixture here, even a few smoked ones would be great. Max’s constant pursuit of excellence pave the way for those that followed and allowed the status and heritage of Penfolds to grow. Max discovered the pleasure of drinking bright Rosé on one of his early trips the Europe. This new release is the first Rosé from Penfolds since Max experimented wi Grenache-based Rosé in the 1960s.
YES WAY ROSÉ
W
hen best friends Erica Blumenthal and Nikki Huganir set up their @YesWayRose Instagram account in 2013, dedicated to their love of Rose wine, they had no idea that they would end up launching their own French Rose wine label, Yes Way Rose, which would become the top selling wine in America and is now available in Australia. “We were completely enamoured and inspired by the delicate taste and gorgeous pale-pink colour of French Rose wine. Our Instagram account was dedicated to all the things we loved about Rose – it was light-hearted, fun, and there was nothing like it. We introduced a line of lifestyle products via our page that featured our bold logo to further promote our love for Rose. As our page and following grew and we became Rose experts, we set out to create the wine. That’s the untraditional path in which Yes Way Rose was born,” said Erica. The pair, who founded the brand in NYC, travelled to France and collaborated with skilled wine makers in the leading Rose producing regions - to deliver a delicious, delicate and refreshing French Rose that will transport you to the South of France with every sip. Dry with a fresh bouquet of strawberry, citrus and white peach, this Rosé is an easy- drinking wine in classic French Provençal style – guaranteed to bring the parté to any social occasion.
The Royal Adelaide Wine Show’s top prize for Most Outstanding Red Wine honours the man who put South Australia on the map for outstanding red wine - Max Schubert.
T
he trophy’s namesake, Max Schubert, was Penfolds’ Wines Chief Winemaker from 1948 to 1975. He was a trailblazer of South Australia’s wine industry, and is known as the father of Australian table wine. Schubert’s passion and drive to purvey Australian wine good enough to match world-class French reds, led to the creation of certainly Australia’s and perhaps one of the world’s most famous wines, the peerless Penfold’s Grange. Born into a wine region, Schubert grew up in Moculta on the fringes of the Barossa Valley and worked at Penfolds’ Nuriootpa and Magill wineries as a teenager. In 1940, Schubert enlisted in the military and served in several of Australia’s World War II fronts in North Africa, Greece and Sri Lanka (then Ceylon). The significance of this year’s award is, that it is one of the very rare occasions the winner is not one of the more traditional Australian red varieties, the types pioneered by Schubert during his tenure as Penfold’s chief – Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. That lighter-bodied Bay of Fires Pinot Noir 2020 from Tasmania claimed the scalp of the Max Schubert Trophy may represent more than an odd spike in the record books. “Ten years ago it would’ve almost been sacrilegious for a Pinot from Tassie to win this award, but now it’s a true embodiment of the variety out there - and the quality of the judges to pick a Pinot as the best from an incredible field of finalists.”
Just perfect for summer entertaining, this crisp, dry Pinot Noir-dominant blend is sourced from the cool-climate vineyards of South Australia’s Adelaide Hills. This wine is crisp and textural, with a restrained palate - led by a burst summer fruits and hints of rhubarb. Available now.

t’s always a good idea to pack an overnight bag when you venture out along the country road to Kenilworth, with thoughts of generous serves of country food swimming around your mind; and dreams of shopping in the cute township - and perhaps deciding to stay overnight and do the same thing all over again the next day. There’s so much to see and do in the town with its multifaceted array of cute boutiques, cafés, restaurants and bakeries, and of course, the country pub! And throughout the year the town plays host to some great events, a Kenilworth ArtsFest; Cheese, Wine and Food Fest; Sunshine Coast Ukulele Fiesta; Kenilworth Show and Rodeo, Campdraft; Quilt and Craft show and so much more.
closed regional factories. At that time, two employees and a local businessman decided that perhaps some of the workers could buy the factory. And they did, renaming it to Kenilworth Country Foods, now Kenilworth Dairies. Now, times have changed - new owner but the dairy is still a local attraction for lovers of fine cheeses, yoghurts and the like. With an onsite café serving fresh lunches, morning and afternoon teas in the undercover entertaining area and surrounding gardens.
As I’ve wandered around the township talking to the locals, traders and visitors to the area, one thing has become apparent. The people who come to Kenilworth love the true country feel of a warm welcome, helpful and willing service - and the prospect of one-on-one communication, so lacking in big city shops and venues.
For those looking for a bit of ‘back to nature’ here’s the small town of Imbil just up the road offering 4-wheel driving and camping facilities, that have become extremely popular with weekend trekkers and serious drivers. And, just 8 km from Kenilworth, you’ll also find the State Forest that harbours four perfect camping areas. No bookings are required just self registration. 16 km up the road, just below Lake Borumba, is the working Borumba Deer Park, offering a unique family enjoyment and relaxation experience - with friendly hosts. There are modern amenities and BBQ facilities for visitors.
The region is also a drawcard for those looking for a true country experience, with a good selection of B&B’s in the area, as well as natural wonderlands for campers to explore and enjoy. And, for those looking for a ‘farm to plate’ experience. On the edge of the shopping precinct, sits the iconic Kenilworth Dairy, Established in 1950, as one of the many rural chefs factories owned by the Kraft Corporation, until in the late 80s, when Kraft moved to centralisation and

NOOSA REGIONAL GALLERY LAUNCHES QAGOMA’S APT SURVEY EXHIBITION TOUR
Q
Celebrating @ Jive Art.. Art gallery, Jive Art is celebrating its eighteenth year this year so Noosa Style caught up with owner Jan Sinclair at her busy gallery on Hastings Street in Noosa Heads, to ask her what’s changed over almost two decades.
with our potential clients. And as with all successful businesses, most importantly it has been about building long term relationships with our artists and our clients, many of whom have been with us since the beginning, and in guiding that journey”.
an says in art there have been just as many things that have emerged and evolved as there are things that have remained constant in a strong and successful industry. Each generation brings a new edge to art, introduces new media or just as in fashion, sometimes applies a new twist on old genre. “Who could have imagined shredding works after a successful auction, a la Banksy a generation ago, or the incredible global interest in Aboriginal art, for example. Or the growth of digital art, now itself fragmenting into two dozen different forms. But the two most important things I have witnessed are the explosion of interest among younger buyers to acquire original art, and the willingness of buyers in all categories and price ranges to pop art in their cart and purchase online.
Jan says: “As our artists have developed and deepen their skills over the years, so too have the preferences of our clients evolved. The most successful artists are those who continue to push their own boundaries rather than sitting in a seam that while it may be commercially successful, ultimately limits where their artistic practice can go. The clients who connect with an artist’s work also help push that journey, they want to see something new, to experience the growth of an artist and to feel a part of their journey. The role of the gallery is to facilitate that relationship, matching happy artist with happy buyer.

Some of these changes can be attributed to the introduction and promotion of the affordable art category which democratised art and made it accessible to everyone, says Jan. “Since the founding of the very first affordable art fair in London two decades ago, to the hundreds of art fairs around the globe every year, millions of buyers have had opportunity to learn about and appreciate art in a setting that is both informal and informative”. Jive has taken note and continues to adopt a very relaxed approach to both presenting the gallery and to working with clients. “Our success as a gallery has been to decide what it is we do best, and to not stray too far. It has been an evolutionary journey, rather than radical one. It’s been about introducing new artists and styles and finding what connects

Jive has become known for relatively large, bold works by contemporary local and Aboriginal artists. Jan notes that In the early days of Jive, most of the buyers of Aboriginal paintings were international clients, but there was a considerable shift in domestic interest just over a decade ago. Today many Australian homes feature Aboriginal art as clients see how easily the pieces fit into either a contemporary or traditional environment. She says it doesn’t matter if you are buying art with the perfect spot in mind, if you are colour matching your decor, or don’t have a clue where you’ll fit it in, if you connect with a work, jump in and own it. As a first-time buyer or experienced collector, that rule is the same. Even if you are investing in art as an asset class, it is pointless to own it without enjoying it. Over the years, the single best piece of advice Jan provides anyone considering the acquisition of art, is to buy what you love and you won’t go wrong.

ueensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art’s (QAGOMA) flagship blockbuster eventthe highly anticipated Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (APT), was the first project of its kind in the world to focus on the contemporary art of Asia and the Pacific. Viewed by more than 3.7 million visitors since its debut in the early 1990’s, APT has over thirty years affirmed QAGOMA’s commitment to programs of international and national relevance, successfully renegotiating the framework in which contemporary art is presented. Recognising the need for an ongoing series of exhibitions and forums initiating dialogue on the art of this important geo-political region, APT’s have played a defining role in enhancing our region’s cultural dialogue. Providing a platform for diverse artistic practices and informing new generations of art audiences in Australia, according to QAGOMA Director Chris Saines, APT’s have been responsible for dramatically shaping the character of QAGOMA as a cultural institution. For those of us lucky enough to live on the Sunshine Coast, these coming holidays we will hardly have to hop, skip or jump to get a taste of this much-anticipated triennial exhibition series. Commencing at Noosa Regional Gallery on December 10th during the same week the blockbuster APT10 opens in Brisbane, Asia Pacific Contemporary: Three decades of APT begins it’s much anticipated 31-month tour of regional Queensland. Extending to 12 other regional venues including John Mullins Memorial Art Gallery at Dogwood Crossing, Miles and Hervey Bay Regional Art Gallery; Noosa Regional Gallery is thrilled to be selected as the venue launching the survey exhibition tour. Says Noosa Regional Gallery Director Michael Brennan, "APT helps us to understand the diversity of cultures and communities in our corner of the Globe, so to be the first stop on a state-wide, multi-year tour of this major survey exhibition is an amazing privilege.” Presenting regional audiences with the experience of highlights from 9 iterations of this long-running series of outstanding exhibitions says Reuben Keehan, Curator, Contemporary Asian Art, QAGOMA, the touring exhibition “reflects APT’s embrace of contemporary art in all its forms, ranging from the ceremonial to the conceptual, and the deeply personal to the resolutely social.” Including a diverse range of media such as painting, sculpture, works on paper, video and

Works by Heri Dono (Indonesia), Lee Wen (Singapore), Tracey Moffatt (Australia/United States), Lorraine Connelly-Northey (Waradgerie people, Australia), and Michel Tuffery (Aotearoa New Zealand) continues Mr Keehan, “encompass diverse customary practices and cultural encounters, illustrating extraordinary social change over almost thirty years.” A highlight of the exhibition says Noosa Regional Gallery Director Michael Brennan, is a pair of articulated, life-sized bulls created by artist Michel Tuffery from corned-beef tins. Titled Povi tau vaga (The challenge) 1999, the bulls first featured in APT3 as part of a live performance. Dancers from the islands of Wallis and Futuna, and local performers from the Samoan and Australian Aboriginal communities ‘faced off’ in a ritualistic ceremony of dance, music, fire and ferocity. The spectacle according to the Artist was “exemplary of the continuing importance within Islander communities of performance and ritual as a means of comment on social tensions.” Unmissable moments within the exhibition include otherworldly mythological paintings from the early 1990s by Heri Dono that draw on traditional Japanese culture narratives and Indonesia’s political history. Managing to utilise his art to fly under the radar of censorship Tomoko Kashiki, Japan b.1982, I am a rock 2012, Synthetic polymer paint, masking tape on linen on by way of visual symbolism, Dono’s work refers often to plywood, 162 x 227.5cm. The final work in a suite of seven videos made over a decade, Other 2009 is a fastpaced video montage compiling scenes from Hollywood films and mainstream Western television. Featuring stereotyped, exotic and objectified representations of the ‘other’; through re-editing sixty years of cinematic representation, Moffatt’s witty commentary on preconceptions in cinema’s depictions of romantic relationships demonstrate how the Artist believes such images reveal “more about the culture that produces and consumes them, than the people and cultures they claim to portray.” Asia Pacific Contemporary: Three decades of APT opens at Noosa Regional Gallery on Friday December 10, 2021 until 27 February 2022.

OUR FURRY FRIENDS… needing a forever home. Noosa, being an outdoor nature area with an abundance of beautiful walks, makes owning a dog here very common. I like to think that due to our more European lifestyle, that dogs are welcome nearly everywhere you go. The French take their dogs everywhere, to cafes, boutiques, even to some beauty parlours. Their furry best friend tagging along.
It is no coincidence that the word dog is God spelt backwards. Need we say anymore, about these beautiful, furry creatures that warm our hearts and lift our spirits with their pure, unconditional love.
A
dog is a very special friend indeed, and since the Covid Pandemic arrived, dog sales have risen like you wouldn’t believe. In a practical sense, parents and children were stuck at home with all this free time to fill; some people felt lonely, others were working from home with only themselves and their computer for company - and then, Isolation, a lack of connection and idle time began to set in. All these factors cry out for something of value to fill a person’s life. Arrive the big, fun bundle of love in the shape of a puppy, or a rescue dog
J,
I remember when I lived in Barcelona, amongst all the amazing architecture and dark never-ending alleyways, dogs were a common sight. Walking and dreaming amongst all that history, tradition, and culture, I was sure to step in numerous dog droppings along the way. Straight back to reality, having to clean the soles of my stylish, Spanish boots. One of the many benefits of owning a dog in Noosa, is that numerous cafes, coffee shops and boutiques welcome them. With many, you will find the owners have been thoughtful enough, to leave a fresh water bowl outside or by your table. This not only enables you to linger a little longer as you enjoy your coffee or luncheon with a friend, but maybe even make new friends as dogs, are great instigators of conversation. Some beaches such as the Noosa Spit, Marcus, and the infamous Stumers Creek at Coolum, are

leash free, which makes for all kinds of fun adventures. Other places such as Alec Dan Park on Cooyar Street in Noosa, Rainbow Park in Sunrise and Peregian Beach are all dog-friendly areas where a leash is required. Speaking from experience, you can’t forget that mischief, cute factor. It seems the cuter the dog, the naughtier they can be! If you want a change of scenery, I must mention the beautiful, peaceful surroundings of Lake Weyba, situated just fifteen kilometres inland from Noosa Heads. A big, gorgeous lake for kayaking, swimming, and fishing. Pack a picnic to enjoy with loved ones, your dog can run wild and free with no leash, while you do a little bird watching. It is a glorious spot, with a little magic in the air. Such a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
Then there are the exceptional guide dogs who lead the blind and sight impaired people through life; and assistance dogs that are trained to respond to a seizure in someone who has epilepsy. I find it fascinating that some dogs can be trained to activate a device to alert a person that a seizure is imminent. Or to ease the fears and issues of PTSD sufferers. And others trained to be a support for autistic children and help them to transition through their tender years with confidence. The instincts and intuition of these beautiful creatures cannot be underestimated. It needs to be said, cliché as it may sound, a dog really is a mans’ best friend.
oceanic journey - dodging fishing nets, shark nets, marine debris and plastic pollution, to make it back to the same beach where they started life - to mate and breed again. The local Sunshine Coast Council funded program, ‘Turtle Care’ has a team of dedicated volunteers walking the beaches from first light, to protect nests from foxes and other predators. Turtle Care can be contacted later in the season, when the hatchlings start emerging for viewing times. This is a wonderful family experience that I would highly recommend - as it helps connect the dots as to why it is worth protecting our beautiful and vulnerable marine life.

How to get the right LOOK for your space… WHEN YOU RENT OR OWN YOUR OWN HOME, YOU WANT IT TO BE A REFLECTION OF YOU - YOUR STYLE AND PERSONALITY.
T
his might seem like a daunting task, as it’s not always easy finding décor that reflects the way you see yourself. So, when it becomes overwhelming to style your space and you don’t know where to begin, it’s easy to fall for bad styling advice, purchase popular yet tacky items -or simply have no overall theme for your home décor. Failing to Define a Style The most common mistake home decorators often make is failing to define a style - before they launch the decoration process. Your home is your personal domain, so it should have all that you love, and reflect your identity. Consider the way you see yourself, and how you want others to perceive you, then try to create an environment that reflects this. To define your style, research and plan your vision first. Use mood boards, images and samples to guide your vision. Some of the common styles that homeowners generally choose include: Scandinavian Hamptons Contemporary – a mix of anything that is trending Industrial French provincial Find the style that speaks to you the most, then give free reign to your creativity and imagination. Instead of sticking to just one, you could mix complementary styles and create something eclectic and unique. Whatever you do, remember to first define your style before you go shopping for materials. Set Your Budget and Work within it Many of us are impulsive buyers (guilty). It’s easy to be swept up in consumer trends, wanting to stay up to date in the latest home décor styles and Tik Tok DIYs. So, speaking from experience, the best way to not over-splurge on décor that you probably don’t need, is to set a strict budget, and stick to it. Start
84
NoosaStyle
by prioritising your needs, thinking of the essentials - and setting aside a budget for your must-haves, then delegating a smaller amount to the items that will give your home flare, but aren’t as necessary. Hoarding Old, Outdated Furniture A lot of furniture in your home may have sentimental value. However, for this reason many of us get stuck living with furniture that is decades old, tarnished, and often doesn’t fit our homes. That’s not to say that keeping your grandma’s armchair isn’t a beautiful thing, if you want it, but if you’re keeping furniture simply because someone you love gave it to you, consider how important it really is to you. If your hand-me-down furniture is invaluable, a better decorating hack could be to get it reupholstered, professionally cleaned or painted with a fresh coat. Vintage furniture is very much in style, but make sure the items you’re keeping tie into your theme and don’t ruin the flow of your décor. Styling Your Home to Suit the Latest Trend It’s understandable to want your style to be up-to-date with the latest trends and hottest décor pieces, however, keeping up with these trends can be an easy way to overdo it - and date your home quickly. Instead of always buying the furniture and décor pieces that everyone is talking about, try to opt for timeless, statement pieces, with some smaller trendy items dotted throughout your home. Simple, vintage pieces will stand the test of time much better than a bold colour or fabric that is in one season - and out the next. Before purchasing, ask yourself if you’ll plan to keep that item for years to come, through home renovations and relocations, or if it’s just an impulse buy. Overdoing It As the saying goes, simple is best, and it’s one to live by. One common decorating mistake that easily makes your home look tacky - is overdoing it with the design. Think bold wallpaper, bright fabrics and an array of textures, multiple colour palettes and reflective surfaces. It’s all too much. Instead, keep things simple. Bold, statement walls or statement furniture items are amazing, but they should in fact be a statement, and not everywhere throughout your home. To get some great ideas, why not check the open houses in your area. Developer estates usually use interior designers to ensure that their properties reflect the perfect image to potential buyers. When you find the right look for you - then start visiting local furniture stores to find comparable pieces, and local boutiques to source your soft furnishing and décor pieces to complement your new space.

An antidote to our obsession with busyness, author Madeleine Dore explores the joys of releasing ourselves from the burden of productivity guilt. Any given day brings a never-ending list of things to do. There's the work thing, the catch-up thing, the laundry thing, the creative thing, the exercise thing, the family thing, the thing we don't want to do, the thing we've been putting off (despite it being the most important thing). Outdoors ENJOYING YOUR GARDEN Garden design expert and horticulturalist Matt Leacy, co-founder and lead designer of the award winning Landart Landscapes, shares some tips regarding some of the health benefits that can be enjoyed by spending time in your garden. Getting your hands dirty in the garden has been well documented as being good for your health, both physically and mentally, and Matt says, “While I consider myself very lucky to love all aspects of my job, I find that I’m happiest when I’m outside on site, seeing my designs come to fruition, or on weekends spending time in my own garden with my family.”
Gardening For Your Health MATT’S TOP TIPS FOR GARDENING FOR YOUR HEALTH INCLUDE: Incidental Exercise & Relaxation - It’s not hard to work up a sweat when you’re gardening. Pruning and weeding will burn around 250 calories per hour, the same as moderate exercise, such as swimming or walking. it’s a great way to get incidental exercise in – while also being productive around the house.
encourage your kids or grandkids to eat more vegetables when they’re growing and harvesting them. Vegetables and fruits are of course, great for boosting your body's immunity, and you can’t get fresher than picking direct from your garden to eat. THIS SEASON MATT ALSO SHARES HIS TOP TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR GARDEN SUMMER READY: 1.
Relax in the garden - Gardening has been proven to help mental illness. It’s something that can be done solo - or socially with family or friends. Mindless tasks like weeding can give you the opportunity to meditate, and there’s something so satisfying about having the patience to watch and wait as plants thrive. Grow your own food - There are so many benefits to growing some of your own food. You can control the pesticides and fertilisers used, lower your food miles, and it can
Spring Clean “Transitioning out of the cooler months, it’s important to spring clean garden spaces - to optimise them for growth and maintenance as the weather heats up,” says Matt. “For lawns, a key step will be removing thatch,” he explains. “Thatch is the accumulation of dead organic lawn matter. When thatch builds up, it can prevent moisture, nutrients and air getting through to the roots of grass and plants.” “In dry or drought conditions, it’s

especially important to remove thatch, as growing and maintenance conditions are challenging enough to begin with,” says Matt. 2. Spring Plantings “Spring is a great time to sow new seeds and plant cuttings,” says Matt. “Plenty of different plant-types can be given life, and moderate weather conditions usually allow new plantings to find their feet - before the hot summer sun comes into full force.” “Some great water-wise options include agaves, dragon trees, tree aloes, Nolina’s and cactuses,” Matt says. “These varieties are not only low-maintenance, but they bring a lot of form and structure into the garden – as well as being very diverse in terms of texture and colour, which means they can be suited to many different types of outdoor spaces.” “Succulents are another great choice,” says Matt. “They are very versatile and waterwise. Some of my favourite succulents include Crassula, Carpobrotus, Aloes,

Lawns “Lawns tend to be one of the more neglected areas of the garden over winter,” says Matt. “Luckily, spring is one of the best times to get lawns looking lush and green again.” “The key steps for spring lawn care include removing thatch and also aerating the lawn to help get water and nutrients through to the turf zone,” Matt says. “If you’re working with a big lawn, you might look at using a mortised aerator. Otherwise, you can use spiked aerator shoes or a simple garden fork.” Add some course sand or top dressing over the lawn – fertilise with something high in nitrogen, and preferably organic,” says Matt.

“ I f you’re looking to establish a new lawn from scratch, I’d opt for something hardy and drought-tolerant,” says Matt. “Buffalo Grasses, such as Sapphire or Sir Walter are often good choices,” Matt says. They tend to cope better than other types of grasses with minimal water – and they bounce back pretty quickly after rainfall or watering.” “Sir Walter and Sapphire can also tolerate more physical traffic than most grasses, so they’re often a good choice for families with kids and pets.” 4. Mulch “Mulch is a must when it comes to both your lawns and garden beds during spring,” says Matt. “Mulch will help your soil retain moisture as the weather heats up – and it’s also helpful for keeping weeds at bay.” “I like to use a high-nitrogen organic compost and a slow release fertiliser,” Matt says. “Dig it into the soil by hand where possible, but be wary of applying too close to plant trunks and stems. Excess moisture can cause stems to rot, so it’s

Beyond the garden “Spring is also the optimal time to start getting your other outdoor spaces ready for relaxing, entertaining and long summer days in the heat,” says Matt. “Outdoor features like outdoor kitchens, patio furniture, barbeques, daybeds, spas and even some comfy beanbags can also go a long way to making your outdoors spaces more appealing throughout spring, summer and beyond,” Matt adds. “Especially when we’re all spending more time than ever at home.” “If you’re looking for something more permanent, you might consider the likes of gazebos, pergolas and outdoor pavilions,” suggests Matt. The Last Word COMMEN TS KEITH JACKSON
HEN a property over the road went to market recently, the promotional material included a beautiful 120page coffee table book printed on exquisite perfumed bond paper and filled with colour photographs of every nook and cranny in the house – which with three bedrooms and two bathrooms was no mansion. Its previous sale in 2015 had been for $1.16 million, which by 2021 had magnified into $2.6 million. No wonder all the neighbours looked happy. ECSTATIC, not happy, should probably be the word. Indeed every home owner in Noosa Shire ought to be euphoric. The average property price has shot up by one-third over the last 12 months, many homes beating this - 50 percent is not unusual. There is said to be a migration surge from Victoria; the biggest northward population movement ever. Paradoxically, this has become a big problem for real estate agents as so much stock has gone out the door there’s a huge scarcity of new listings. But for vendors, Noosa remains a property dream.

T’S true that Queensland has had an excellent run in keeping Covid in check over the last 21 months but, with the border now open, even under pretty tough rules, the virus will enter the State, become endemic and more people will get sick and be hospitalised. Some will die. The pandemic is not over; freedom is just another word for bring in the plague. As I wrote this in late November, the big worry was that only 62 percent of Noosa’s population was fully vaccinated (the rate for Australia was 71 percent, 30th in the world). This left plenty of unvaccinated folk wandering around for the virus to have a crack at.

EMARKABLE happenings in Noosa’s tourism industry. The Shire’s $850 million tourism and hospitality sector employs 6,000 people and annually generates more than a billion dollars in direct and indirect revenue. Since August 2001, Tourism Noosa Ltd, a public company, has presided over all that. But in June Noosa Council announced that tourism was its ‘core business’, grabbed a $3 million tourism levy for itself and absorbed it into general rates. Then in November the Council - itself plagued by huge problems appropriated Tourism Noosa’s destination
get on. At about the same time, longsuffering mayor Clare Stewart, whose shrill detractors are easily outnumbered by her many supporters, announced it was time the Council had a “health check”. Stewart decided the underperforming outfit she inherited when elected last year required an independently review to fix its problems. ONLY it never rains but it pours, as my mother used to say, resignedly looking at my exam results. No sooner a new CEO been selected when they wanted pulled out (“personal reasons”), leaving the Council’s executive team sacked, stricken by sickness or muttering ‘so long, farewell, adios’. “The departures add new urgency to the Council’s transformation,” stated Cr Stewart. “In our search for a new CEO we are seeking a leader who will inspire and bring to our Shire great experience, proven capability and wisdom.” All required, along with the strength to wield a big broom with which to clean out the dross. OOSA STYLE is about lifestyle and the good things in life,” editor Kaylene Murray once wrote. And as the magazine is poised to enter its 23rd year – making it a distinguished veteran of regional publishing in Australia – Kaylene and Tom continue to produce a magazine as fresh, inviting and in-the-moment as Noosa itself. After four years, I can affirm they are a delight to know and work with. Over that time, they’ve occasionally had to fend off thin-skinned officials and other critics of my scribbling and I thank them for that. I wish them, as I wish you dear reader, a splendid Noosa Christmas and the bountiful New Year we all look forward to and deserve.
