Out & About GREAT TIMES & EVENTS
Rococo Beach Club Marquee entertainment precinct
E
veryone is still talking about how fantastic this four-day event was, and how it was the crowning glory of the 2017 Noosa Alive! festival. Rococo's owner and event visionary, Richard Pace and his stellar team of chefs and kitchen staff, wait staff, bar staff, and executive team of helpers, ensured the success of this once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon. Fabulous bands, stunning dancers, orchestra, jazz, Brazilian musos, and old-time swing. The party never ended. What more could anyone ask for? Oh that's right - for it to happen all over again next year!

David and wife Kristin were in the audience to watch their son, Rory and his wife Janneke on stage, with Jack (Clayton Storey), Julia Verburgt, Kay Ellsum and Jenni McCall - along with scene-stealer, local Deputy Mayor Frank Wilkie in this slick production. At interval guests sipped their glasses of wine and were treated to an array of sumptuous canapĂŠs, to give them strength to keep laughing through the second half!

The recent Irvine Wine Dinner was a triumph offering guests a 4 course dinner with 6 matching wines, including a taste of the Irvine Grand Merlot, regarded as one of the best in Australia. Restaurant owner Chris Burton and Irvine Wine's winemaker, Rebekah Richardson were extremely happy with the sellout evening.

Spring is nature's way of saying… Let's Party! Robin Williams Kaylene Murray - Editor

THIS ISSUE WE HAVE SO MUCH TO SEE
Welcome to our sensational Spring issue…
I
t's the time of year when we kick off the melancholy of Winter (well maybe not in Queensland) and throw open our doors, fling open our windows and welcome the luscious aromas of Spring into our homes. It's time to capture the cooling breezes and tantalising fragrances wafting from our gardens.
To pay homage to the beauty of Spring, we have filled our pages with colour, excitement - so much to do - so much to say. It's time to luxuriate at your favourite spa; dip your toe into the azure blue sea in your new swimsuit…then drape yourself in the latest fashion before dining at one of the region's fabulous eateries. This issue we bring you an exciting collection of the new season, local and international designs available from our favourite boutiques and designers; a selection of wonderful accessories - stunning fragrances, the perfect piece of jewellery to complement your new look, as well as the latest industry beauty secrets. With the Spring racing carnival and myriad of lavish luncheons and wine dinners giving everyone the opportunity to parade their latest ensemble - from head to foot; stunning dresses, beautiful jewellery and designer bags and footwear, it is no wonder that we love this heady season that heralds to beginning of Summer. We have sourced a selection of beautiful properties; timeless interior design options, and new renovation ideas to give your abode a fresh new season look. I know it's also the season where 'some' people feel inclined to 'Spring clean' - but if you have another glass of wine I'm sure the feeling will pass. Instead, sit back and enjoy our new issue with a glass of wine, Champagne, or
simply a great cup of coffee or tea. You can make those cleaning plans for another day - week - month - or year. Spring is too perfect to waste time on the mundane! In this issue you will find a selection of the region's finest artists and artisans; and interviews with the forever handsome, Hugh Jackman, Australia's export to the world of entertainment. Hugh discusses his life as a husband, father, actor, singer and all-round good guy, as well as his new movie - The Greatest Showman; we also talk to local Real Estate agent/actor Rory Williamson, who in a page straight out of the script, written by his father, David Williamson, plays a sleazy real estate agent on stage; we also talk to young designer Isabelle Campbell, who shares her story about how her dreams have become a reality, right here in Noosa; and we visit with the magnificent Smart Pups and their trainers in the parklands of Peregian Beach on a beautiful Spring day, before they made their entrance at the Peregian Festival. With the theatre scene here and in Brisbane in overdrive, you will have so much to do and see this season, you'll be needing another holiday. What more could you ask for in the region's longest running, premier lifestyle magazine.

THE FAMILY MAN
an on why m k c Ja h g u H to loving wife e around him. r e th fa e v ti r o p p u From s duct of thos he is truly the pro Story: Danny Bowman
Has Hugh Jackman finally found the role of his lifetime? This December, he takes centre stage in the big budget musical drama, The Greatest Showman, embracing the role of legendary circus impresario PT Barnum. Not only is the character tailor-made for a natural born entertainer like Jackman, but it could well earn him an Oscar. Having previously been nominated for his portrayal of the Jean Valjean in Les Miserables, this is the kind of larger-than-life figure that Jackman thrives on playing.
I
t suits the natural showman in me,” Jackman says. “I grew up falling in love with musical theatre and once you have that in your blood you love playing roles which have this theatrical quality. It's a chance to let yourself go completely and step into these fantastic characters who transport you and the audience into a different reality. I love the sense of spectacle and wonder of all that.” He continues: “Some people have a gift for that, and I think that was always part of me. There's this side of me that
likes putting myself out there as a showman; there's nothing better than the feeling of being able to connect with an audience and realise that you've been able to transport them to where you're both in the same place, and where the outside world kind of disappears and time stands still.” This is the spirit that defines Jackman. In person, he is a true gentleman and is at once relentlessly affable and charming. His infectious enthusiasm is no act - this is a man who endured emotional hardship and loneliness as an eight-year-old boy whose mother left his father - a top Price Waterhouse account - and four siblings behind to move back to England. It was the kind of traumatic event that breeds anger and confusion and ever since Hugh has tried to find harmony in life. That process began in earnest when he fell in love with actress DeborraLee Furness while they worked together on the Australian TV series Correlli. She was already a star and he was just getting started as an actor. But it was love at first sight and their continues next pages

marriage is still going strong 21 years later. Says Jackman of the bond between them: “I think when you have a good feeling about someone and then everything that happens after that meets or even exceeds what you expected, then you never look back. We have this very beautiful and natural way of being together that has made it very easy for us. I can't imagine my life without Deb; I would never have come this far either emotionally or creatively.” Parenting is also of vital importance to Jackman. As the product of a broken home, he has dedicated himself to being the best possible father to he and

brother and we were all living in chaos, so I've been extremely conscious of providing the most loving and caring environment for my family.” Along the way, Jackman has also managed to build an impressive Hollywood resume in a wide range of films including Kate and Leopold, The Prestige, Van Helsing, and the X-Men franchise films where he built up a massive fan following as Wolverine. And following the box office triumph of Logan, his final bow as Wolverine, Jackman, who turns 49 in October, stands at the peak of his career. Interestingly, beneath the eternally good-natured exterior lies a fierce sense of ambition. “I'm ready to challenge myself in ways that I wasn't prepared or willing to do before and that's kind of exciting for me. My wife thinks I have a strange fixation on wanting to keep inventing some sort of new mountain to climb and I have to keep assuring her that it's just healthy ambition!”
“Nothing I've accomplished as an actor or performer Q: Do you ever sing at home for Deborra? would mean Ultimately, he Hugh: very much to credits his Oh, I'll often sing for her. IN THE PINK With a 1.6 billion year history in their spectacular outback home, the exquisite Argyle Pink Diamond is beautiful, intriguing, regal, rare and all together in a class of its own.
T
heir delicate palette ranges through soft blush, cherry blossom and rose to the pretty lavender and cornflower blue to sensual violet and dramatic red. The only source of these famous diamonds, The Argyle Diamond mine in Western Australia, is set to completely cease all mining operations in 2021 due to exhausted supply. In anticipation of this closure date, investors buying pink diamonds are seeing an average appreciation of between 1520% on their diamond portfolios each year. To gain perspective on their rarity, for every 1 million carats of rough diamonds produced at the Argyle Diamond mine, a mere one carat of pink is suitable for sale via Tender. Commanding on average 20 times more in price per carat than white diamonds, they are considered to be the most sought after diamonds in the world. The 2016 Annual Pink Diamond Tender achieved the highest average price per carat since the Tender began in 1984 and
was the first to comprise diamonds solely from Argyle’s underground mine. As the recipient of the Diamond Guild Australia Award for Design in the Argyle Pink Diamond category in 2007, Gordon Herford, Master Jeweller of Poeta, receives an exclusive invitation to the annual Argyle Pink Diamond Tender which allows him access to these majestic and rarified gems. Gordon is an expert in everything Argyle Pink Diamond, from sourcing a gem as an investment piece via Tender and private sources to an emotional purchase of the heart, he will provide original design sketch options infusing the gem with your personality as well as custom hand making and full certificates to ensure that you are happy either with an investment piece that will appreciate immediately or an artwork of pure thoroughbred beauty that you will treasure forever. The legend of the Argyle Pink Diamond will live long after the mine has ceased to dazzle us with her magical offerings and it will leave its mark on the imagination of anyone who treasures eternal beauty for there is no more tender a symbol of love than an Argyle Pink Diamond. LOVE LIFE INDULGE IN SOMETHING SPECIAL
From sundial to wrist watch German boutique watch manufacturer, MeisterSinger, specialises in single-handed watches with an emphasis on relaxed time. And now, you can get this relaxed time in Noosa at Define Watches’ stunning boutique, newly opened in Quamby Place (near renowned Ricky’s, Wood Fire Grill, Wasabi & Rock Salt restaurants). What makes MeisterSinger so special? In this day and age we go to great lengths to save time: fine-tuning technology, streamlining processes and speeding up communications. While we're trying madly to make time stretch a little further by running from one appointment to the next, always driven by ticking hours, minutes and seconds, it’s nice to see a watch company providing an alternative. With its unique one-handed watches, MeisterSinger returns to the origins of timekeeping to show us how charming it can be to read time in its simplest form. Harking back to the horological origins of sundials and candle clocks, MeisterSinger’s
single-handed watches feature only one hand that points to indices that show the time to the nearest 5 minutes. This is a deliberate effort to readjust the emphasis away from minute precision to a more relaxed concept of time. Meistersinger’s watch designs are pure and simple with a distinctive classical appeal. Typical characteristics are the leading zeroes on the hour digits and the highly domed glass. Although the early collections differed visually, primarily through their type of Circularis Power mechanical movement (MeisterSinger makes both Reserve 43mm RRP manually wound and automatic watches), over the $7,500 (featuring inyears the range has been expanded to include more house movement) complex models that also show the weekdays, the date, and most recently a second time zone. The entire collection on show and available at Define Watches features timepieces in a variety of case sizes, dial colours and movement functionality. Prices start from $950 for the retro-look NeoQ Collection and range up to $9,600 for the stunning Circularis PR with ennobled in-house, double-barrel, power reserve calibre and rose gold bezel. If you love watches and seek something a little different, a MeisterSinger may well be the timepiece for you. Call into Define Watches - Peter and Lydia would be more than happy to show you the range or just chat watches. Why not make the day of it and enjoy a great lunch or dinner at the same time.

he role comes two years after Williamson left his Sydney home to embark on a property career on the Sunshine Coast, though the actor-turned-property tycoon is far from sleazy.
“We just sold a home for a lovely 84year-old woman, who has 9 children and something like 25 grandchildren,” he says. “She was overjoyed and now she could finally afford to go visit all her grandkids living all over the world. That's the stuff that makes you smile.” The son of Australia’s most successful playwright, David Williamson, creativity is in the 40-year-old’s blood. “As a child I was surrounded by creative people so I was creative by default, I had no other choice. “I did love drawing and acting, but as I grew older my interest in business, economics and particularly property grew.” Still, Williamson began his professional

life following in his parents’ creative footsteps, though a little indirectly, choosing to focus his energy on acting, rather than writing. “I'm not bad at writing either, I've actually written for Australian TV, but from a young age it was acting that seemed the most interesting.” After attending the Australian Theatre for Young People, Williamson travelled to London where he completed a six week course at The Central School of Speech and Drama. “I came back from this trip, really pumped up. I auditioned for the well regarded Australian acting schools WAAPA and NIDA and was lucky enough to be accepted into both at 19. “I ended up going to NIDA for 3 years, it was an amazing experience that I look back at fondly.” His first acting job was in the last ever episode of Police Rescue, playing a man that had to be saved by Gary Sweet’s character, after climbing up a fireplace semi-naked to surprise his girlfriend.
From there, Williamson’s career continued to flourish. He played a regular on New Zealand drama Shortland Street and held the lead role in Operator, along with starring in one of his father’s plays. His furore into directing and writing included A Family Legacy, which was a Tropfest finalist, as well as producing That Sugar Film, the highest ever grossing Australian documentary in the Australian and New Zealand territory. Throughout all of this creative success, Williamson’s interest in property never waned. “Real estate is something I've been interested in for some time. “The other week I found an old folder full of tiny newspaper property ads I'd cut out of houses for sale in Sydney, when I was 17 - houses I thought would be good buys. “I dreamed of buying them but I didn't have the money so I just cut out the ads. “I finally bought a place in Bondi in 2009, affectionately know as the Dungeon as it was south facing and very

was laughing so hard that I almost didn't realise that I'd heard some of those 'created fantasy descriptions' from real estate agents in my life, some who stretched the truth almost as much as the sleazy real estate agent portrayed on stage!” David Williamson's 50th play, Jack of Hearts offers the audience a riveting, funny look into the world of XY geners on the fast path to fame and glory. This is a family affair, with David's son Rory and daughter-in-law Janneke, playing two of the principle roles. The sleazy womanising real estate agent, Stu and his bit-on-the-side Nicky. The story follows the central character Jack a burned-out lawyer who has given it all away to 'find himself' - much to the chagrin of his not too long-suffering, personal trainer wife, Emma. And, Stu a real estate agent, who never let the truth get in the way of a sale, or a good looking woman; and his luxury loving, always forgiving wife, Denys. Obsessed reinvented… I remember your touch, your skin, your scent... As the re-invention of an iconic fragrance, OBSESSED plays on the evocation of memory through scent. At the heart of OBSESSED is the memory of a past love, triggered by the scent of another on the skin. Here, the genders are subverted and layered, with the traditional scents of the masculine Fougère — particularly White Lavender—harnessed for the women’s fragrance, while the men’s scent is in thrall to a dark Vanilla. These elements are combined with materials more typically associated with each gender; Musks add a sensuous warmth to the women’s fragrance, while Amber and Woods strengthen the sense of masculinity in the men’s. It is this tension, a compulsive push and pull that makes the wearer return to the fragrances time and again.

“Gan’dja’ri Rainforest Retreat”
"Simply the best" was the Sunshine Coast's front page headline in 2007 when the grand home, built by Richard and Amanda McCar thy, was acclaimed by the Master Builder Ass. judges as the 'House of the Year', for not only the Sunshine Coast, but as the 'Queensland House of the Year' for that year.

hen it comes to the almost Botanical Gardens that surround this wonderful home, overlooking a high waterfall, ten years of nurturing and growth has served to increase the floral beauty and overall glory of this unique property.
Seeking to describe this estate named Gan'dja'ri ('Water Spirit'), no better words should be needed to define Gandjari's beauty, than those in the front page article's description of the Master Builder's judges visit that day. "If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the look on the faces of the Master Builder judges would have spoken volumes when they first laid eyes on this masterpiece". "in a year where the competition was as tough as ever, this home truly stood out from the rest" Master Builder's regional manager Steve Robinson said. As we drove down the long and winding driveway, deeper into the depths of a tropical rainforest, we started to notice the dwellings of this residence peer out among soaring rock faces and tumbling waterfalls. We simply couldn't believe our eyes as we tried to take in the enormity of this magical environment. We realized then that the 2007 House of the Year is not just a home but an experience".
the immaculate timber walkways, that join the main home to two guest pavilions, when the waterfall was in full flow, as "causing our breaths to catch", as the wonder of nature's power thundered beneath them. The view shared with the owners by many guests was, "what a fabulous and magical environment to get married!
The main residence, available for corporate conferences, Events and Weddings, boasts high pitched timber roofs adorned with Indonesian timber shingle, huge balconies overlooking the rainforest and a waterfall carved and a spectacular gorge, that after rain is transformed into a 'bridal veil' of white water and with more rain it becomes a raging torrent that thunders below the home and thrills guests and home owners alike. A superbly crafted mezzanine floor, that on special occasions in the past has hosted a jazz band or chamber orchestra, appears to almost float over gathered guests, and overlooks the main living area and a gourmet kitchen, past bi-fold doors to take in waterfall and garden views.
Built on seven acres of unspoilt nature, this spectacular residence that lets every visitor and every guest feel as if they have arrived at a five-star luxury resort somewhere in paradise. Inspired by Japanese and Malayan Plantation house design, Gan'dja'ri is an organic design that was intended to blend into, and reflect the environment around it. One guest wrote of their experience when taking a leisurely walk along
The benefits of this eco defined environment are immediately found in the pure tank collected rainwater, made even purer with fine filtering, extensive solar panels and an absolute silence from any sound of traffic, in this rainforest environment commonly filled with bird calls. "If that's not enough luxury for guests, they can stroll another 20 metres across a beautiful timber bridge to their own heated spa. It has, like all the buildings and gazebos, the same timber shingled roof as the main home, and sits on the edge of the gorge giving guests one of the best views in the retreat that has been appropriately named "Gan'djar'ri Rainforest Retreat and Spa". Alternatively guests can avail themselves of the barbeque set in a Polynesian style cabana linked to the guest pavilions by a small bridge. All in all Gan'dja'ri has proven true to the headline announcing this retreat: Centrally located in the heart of the hinterland this property is just 5 minutes from the historical town of Eumundi, and 15 Minutes
to Hastings Street. "Simply the Best" when it comes to living and visiting as guests this wondrous retreat from the worries of the world.

designing women Isabelle Campbell STORY: Nicole Madigan
It’s little wonder the 21-year-old is now firmly embedded in the fashion industry, currently the manager and designer at Zephyr, a stunning designer loungewear label, based in beautiful Noosa.
40
NoosaStyleLiving
For as long as she can remember, clothes and fashion have always played a major role in Isabelle Campbell’s life. Never content with the two clothing options selected by their mother, a young Isabelle would have something specific in mind - choosing clothes to reflect the way she felt, even as a small child.
I
have always been interested in fashion and the way it makes me feel,” says Isabelle. “One of my strongest memories as a child was watching my mother sew.“She sewed all of her own clothes as well as clothes for me and my sister. A lot of these were matching.”
Before long, Isabelle was designing her own outfits, her mother bringing them to life. “I spent a large part of my childhood sitting at my little desk in my mother’s art room drawing, painting and cutting and sticking from fashion magazines. “I also loved to sew embellishments onto scrap fabric and sew doll accessories.” So it’s little wonder the 21-year-old is now firmly embedded in the fashion industry, currently the manager and designer at Zephyr, a stunning designer loungewear label, based in beautiful Noosa. Isabelle’s tenure began in 2014, after graduating year 12 the year before. “I was first employed for 15 hours a week as a studio assistant in the workshop. “I loved my job from the very beginning as my duties were so diverse. I spent that 15 hours a week cutting fabric, sewing garments, sending garments to our wholesale and retail customers as well as cleaning and organising the studio. “I also created and began running the social media accounts for the business on Facebook and Instagram.” Isabelle jokes that she’d spent the previous 18 months being interviewed daily by Zephyr’s owner Cherilyn Hewish, whose son Isabelle had been dating. She now spends more time with her boyfriend’s mother than anyone else. “We go on work trips together, work in the office together, spend weekends together and go on family holidays together. “It is a funny situation but it works so well. “We are both so passionate about fashion and Zephyr. Cherilyn has given me the opportunity to learn every aspect of this business and I am so grateful for that.” Since those early days, Isabelle’s role has changed and evolved. While her current position continues to encompass many of her initial duties, she now designs clothes for the brand each season, selects fabric and directs photoshoots. “This involves online research, sketching designs, sewing sample garments, travelling to China to source fabric and travelling to Vietnam to work with our team of sewers. “I also built and run the online stores, organise all of the advertising for the brand and create all of the content for our online mailing list. “I spend a few weeks a year in both Sydney and Melbourne exhibiting the range to wholesale customers from all around Australia and New Zealand at trade shows. “I also direct multiple photo shoots a year. I recently directed a photoshoot in Hanoi, Vietnam with an amazing European photographer.” It’s quite a position description for a 21-year-old in the early stages of their career, but one Isabelle relishes.
One of her favourite, but most demanding, tasks is selecting the beautiful fabric, inspired by months of design work. “At Zephyr our range of clothing is all about starting with beautiful fabric. “We work with fabrics including pure linen, pure silk and cotton. “When I travel to China to source fabric I always have a range of curated colours and weights in mind that I have planned over the last six months in the designing process. “However, I don’t always find what I am looking for so it is definitely a very full on few days browsing thousands of metres of fabric, comparing swatches and making big decisions for the coming season.” While many other young women groan at the thought of Monday coming around, Isabelle finds it difficult to describe what she does every day as “work”. “Sometimes I pinch myself and laugh about the fact that it is actually work. “There really is no better feeling than waking up each day and knowing that I’ll be spending my day doing what I love. “ love that I can spend a whole day sewing and then the next day spend my day sitting in my office organising something. “I love the process of designing, picking the fabric and creating it into a beautiful garment. “I then love selling the garment to women online and in our stores and to wholesale customers. “I love the creativity that I get to inject into my job.” With so much to love, it’s little wonder Isabelle has no immediate plans to move on. But that doesn’t mean she’s ready to rest on her laurels either. “We now stock our range in over 100 boutiques throughout Australia and New Zealand as well as a booming international website and a beautiful show room. “I want to see how far we can go and continue to design beautiful clothing for women.”

Juicy news for strawberry lovers…
Q
ld Strawberry Growers have announced that strawberry lovers now have a new Queensland-bred favourite to sink their teeth into this season called the ‘Red Rhapsody’. The new variety is the result of breeding research at DAF’s Maroochy Research Facility in Nambour, and funding by Hort Innovation, using the research and development Strawberry Industry levy and funds from the Australian Government and co-funded by the Queensland Government. The Red Rhapsody variety has been developed and delivered as part of a national variety improvement program that is backed by strawberry growers, including Queensland Strawberry
growers. The Queensland Strawberry Industry produces between 6,000 and 15,000 tonnes of fruit per season – that is about 60 million punnets of strawberries each season. Red Rhapsody is attractive to growers because it has been specifically developed to enable quicker and less expensive harvesting. The Red Rhapsody has longer stems that enable the fruit to grow away from the bush, making them easier to locate; a high resistance to bruising, meaning they can get to the consumer in good condition, despite the rough and tumble of harvesting, packing and

With a leaning towards delicious fresh seafood, hand-crafted sourdough breads, char-grilled beef and local seasonal vegetables, as well as poultry and vegetarian options, the menu offers a tantalising taste of France without the price of a plane ticket. We were excited by the menu which offered such delights as Alsacian Specialty (a French pizza); Assiette de Charcuterie with duck rillette, parma ham, finnocchiona, cacciatorini, cornichon and grilled sourdough; Plump Scallops that were sweet and succulent; Steak Fritte a chargrilled Cape Grim sirloin steak, caramelised échallote, pomme frittes with truffle oil and parmesan, green salad and bordelaise sauce; and finish off with a traditional Crepes Suzette. On the western side is Lake Weyba National Park and Lake Weyba which feeds into the estuary at Noosa Heads. The area is rich with native wildlife and flora. Its friendly village atmosphere and laid-back lifestyle, makes Peregian Beach a favourite destination for savvy locals and clever tourists, who are seeking a quiet shopping experience away from the bustle of Noosa Heads. Peregian Beach offers visitors an excellent selection of casual and trendy restaurants, bars, cafés and take-aways dotted all around the central, village square - all inter-connected by quaint lanes and pathways. Miguel Maestra is more than a celebrity chef - he's now the perfect 'fun guy' to represent Australian Mushrooms. AND, TO PROVE THE POINT… MIGUEL HAS GIVEN US HIS SECRETS TO COOKING THE PERFECT ROAST CHICKEN. To avoid drying out your roast chicken add finely chopped (or blended) mushrooms under the chicken skin, along with some butter. This will help retain moisture, making a dried out chook a thing of the past. Miguel's top Mushie tips: Mushrooms are a natural seasoning, which means you don’t need to add lots of salt when you cook with them. Cooked mushrooms have a meaty, umamirich quality that makes any dish taste like it has been simmering for hours. Boost your mincemeat with extra flavour and nutrition by adding some blended mushrooms.

Asian Noodles with ginger, garlic and avocado
Avocados first arrived in Australia in 1840 in seed form, and were planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney. Further commercial imports of seed and plants continued over the next 110 years until by the late 1960's, when a developing Australian industry began to take shape.
C
urrently avocado orchards are found in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and Tasmania. They are a perennial fruit and luckily for home cooks and the restaurant industry, Australian premium produce is available all year round, because of the widespread and climatically diverse growing regions. The highest volume of fruit is available between March and November. Avocados are known to have existed from as far back as 291 BC. They originally took root in the highlands of Central America and Mexico and the lowlands of Columbia in South
America, where they grew wild. This exotic fruit was first transported to Europe in the 16th century, after the Spanish conquistadors invaded Mexico and Peru. When the Aztecs discovered the unique greenish coloured fruit with a seed in the centre, they dubbed it 'ahuacatl', which has evolved over the centuries into the word avocado. For more information about the nutritional benefits of avocados and recipes visit: Makes 4 serves Cooking time: 5 minutes Preparation time: 10 minutes Ingredients: 560gm asian noodles (presoaked/cooked as per pack instructions) 2 tsp sesame oil 2 tbsp vegetable oil 2 tbsp ginger (peeled and cut into thin strips) 4 garlic (cloves) sliced 2 tbsp light soy 2 tbsp oyster sauce 2 spring onions (sliced)
2 avocado ½ sprig coriander leafs Butter Method: Heat sesame oil and vegetable oil in a wok or fry pan. Add ginger and garlic, fry gently then add noodles and stir fry. Cut avocado in half, remove seed and skin, cut flesh into chunks. Add onion, avocado, soy and oyster sauce to the noodles and stir fry for a further minute or until all ingredients are combined and hot. Serve and garnish with coriander leafs. Variations: Try with chicken or beef as an alternative.

Food doyen and Farmers Market powerhouse, Jan Powers shares her philosophy on farmgate to dinnerplate… Eat locally grown produce... Seriously, this should not be a trend - it’s a given. As humans we should eat what is grown in our local area for myriad reasons.
Fresh... There is No Excuse for not easting Fresh produce here in South East Queensland, none. The region provides everything we need.
Assembling... You don’t Have to be the cook! And if you can’t be the cook, use and celebrate the skills of others and make Assembling your skill! And, with the amazing range of fresh, raw, and prepped foods at the markets, and throughout Australia, this is easy!
Welcome to the university of the kitchen... Food knowledge is the new black! The quest to know the origin and providence of food bought is now a must and a given. This will continue strongly this year. I love this global trend, because it means farmers and growers are perfectly placed to share their knowledge first hand. You can’t do that in a grocery store.
The sugar war... Propaganda and priorities. In fighting any war, options must always be considered. We predict fresh fruits will finally take the place as the rightful providers of sweetness in our foods; rather than processed sugar. Come on, isn’t this an obvious tactic to educate the public and also promote locally grown sweetness.

Grocery store bores... The boredom and beige of grocery stores will continue in 2017, with millions spent on ‘re-skinning’ packaging to convince customers of the locality of their purchase. Similarly, the farmers will continue their battle for equitable payment and involvement. Buying from markets, direct from farmers or from independent supporters of farmers WILL continue, as it should.
Food from our past... We will see more ‘discoveries’ of food from our past – those grains and greens that have long been on menus of humans, will be suddenly be thrust into the spotlight like that poor Susan Boyle years ago.
Smocktails – mocktails + smoothies... There will be a merger of smoothies and mocktails as getting on the booze becomes too hard, too expensive and too timeconsuming. Super cool, flavour filled Smocktails will be The thing – and can be taken any time of the day, anywhere. Smart bar and restaurant managers should be all over this!!
Condiments... Just as our North Americans love their condiments (think sauce, cheese, sweet gherkins, and the list goes on) the Creative Condiments trend is taking off this year – but ours will be different – think locally grown flavours and add-ons; rare sauces and dips; foods our indigenous sisters and brothers used and more.
Flower power... Thankfully this trend will continue – fantastic florals, and miniature edible flowers will be used in dishes, as decorations - and for tables.

hese dogs change lives forever,” she beams.“From children who struggle with day-to-day life, these animals become a guiding light, a warm hand, a confidante, a best friend, a nurse, a carer – all of the above. It is incredible the difference they make.” Founder of Smart Pups, Patricia has always loved dogs, but it wasn’t until she was asked to train an assistance dog over eight years ago that she realised the lack of such aids for young children across Australia. “There was no-one training assistance dogs in Australia for kids under 18,” explains Patricia. “And this seemed ludicrous as early intervention is key for such youngsters with special needs.” Packing in her job and packing up her life, Patricia decided she had to right this wrong, moving to America in order to learn how it was done over there. Immersing herself in the field and undertaking an internship at service dog facility, 4 Paws for Ability, Patricia returned a year later to bring what she had discovered to Australia. Within 12 months, Smart Pups, a not-for-profit entity designed to assist children with special needs, and improve the quality of life of kids with autism and seizure-related syndromes through assistance dogs, was born. “We got one to two training dogs at first, but within a year had received over 100 new applicants for an assistance dog!” explains Patricia. With seizure-response dogs warning children when they are going to have a seizure, autism assistance dogs helping kids with sociability, confidence and behaviour, and mobility assistance dogs aiding children in wheelchairs, these canines (mainly Labradors and Retrievers) are making kids smile again. “The difference to their lives is immense,” reveals Patricia.“Some of these children transform completely on receiving their dog. And it also gives our foster families (who look after our dogs while they are training) a wonderful experience. In fact, we are always looking for more foster families, which is our biggest barrier to training more
dogs.” With Smart Pups passionate about helping children, and their recipient families achieving a greater quality of life through the loving companionship of a registered assistance dog and a furry best friend, Patricia has certainly found her calling, and it’s one that she couldn’t be happier with.
MEET A FOSTER FAMILY The Sharpe Family “In my family there is just myself (Carol) and my husband, Jim, and most importantly our nine-year-old Golden Labrador called Mr Bear who is actually a qualified Professional Support Dog certified by Smart Pups. Mr Bear has been invaluable in the training of the 16 Smart Pups that we have helped raise and train. Since last year, we raised a beautiful golden girl by the name of Bindi, who has now been was placed with her 'forever' family, where she now working as an autism assist dog for a young boy. We are currently fostering one of her brothers, Arnie, for his final stages of training too. He will hopefully be placed with a family over the next few months. We have been fostering service dogs for ten years, the last five with Smart Pups. Nine of these dogs are now working, another two have finished their training (Archie and Arnie who are Bindi's brothers) We love absolutely everything about fostering. Apart from being a Labrador lover, the need is so great for these assistance dogs and they change lives forever for the children they help. I love seeing the puppies grow and learn their new skills and mature. All of the dogs are different, but we fall in love with every one! We have fostered some dogs as puppies, and we have also fostered dogs who are near placement but require more intensive training.”
NEW PILOT PROGRAM FOR TRAINING PUPS Qld Prisoners help to train Smart Pups
Volunteer specialist Smart Puppy trainers with their pupils It probably seems a bit unlikely - but the program which started last year at the Maryborough Correctional Centre, north of the Sunshine Coast, has proved to be a huge success - for both the puppies' skill training and the self esteem, empathy and rehabilitation of the prisoners involved. Six puppies were in the first group, and over 10 months the inmates put the puppies through their training schedule of wheelchair assistance, opening doors, retrieving dropped items and turning on the lights. The pups stay at the prison during the week and go to their foster homes on the weekends. All skills required to assist special needs children to gain more independence in their lives.
Some of the specific training attributes of these special dogs includes diabetic and seizure response; mobility assistance, nuzzling a child who's having a 'meltdown', and being their best friend and protector. One very special dog has also been placed with a returned veteran with PTSD. There is almost no limit to what Smart Pups can be trained to assist with, and the prison program has been extremely beneficial because the inmates involved have the hundreds of hours necessary to train the dogs with the more complex tasks. With over 80 families on the waiting list and more requests coming in each week, this program has managed to speed up the number of dogs in training.

NS Sometimes, after many years the wheel of fate turns... When 19th century artists travelled by ship to Europe to study, they sailed like most people, not on Liners but on Wool Clippers, Sail Freighters or Steam Freighters, that offered single travellers dorm-type accommodation, and small cabins for married couples. Those lucky enough to afford a Liner travelled the same route, also carrying freight.
T
heir route took them from the Eastern States via Fremantle, the Suez, Port Said, and on to Naples, where over a five or six day period, wool was unloaded onto trains bound for Milan. Single male passengers normally stayed in the city to try to liaise with famed Neapolitan beauties. Single ladies and couples mostly took local trains north or south to small resort towns, to escape the 'smell Naples and die' syndrome. The picture illustrated, signed and dated '03 by Tom Roberts (1856 - 1933), shows his wife Elizabeth seated on a wall in one such resort town. The couple were off to London to paint the portraits of the many Lords and Ladies, who had visited Australia for the celebrations to commemorate the new Federation of Australia. Roberts' daunting, well-paid job of placing these portraits alongside their Aussie counterparts in 'The Big Picture' as it became known, was to prove twice as difficult as the Australian sitters portraits. The painting, onboard with them in '03, is believed by many, to be the downward turning point of his career. It was around five years or more before he completed it, and the monotony of the task, cast him into a depression that was to last for many years. The painting of course, is now housed in the Federal Parliament building in Canberra. This painting of Elizabeth was on Roberts' wall in Tasmania, when he died in 1933. After much brouhaha in
Melbourne, Roberts' first biographer and close friend, Robert Henderson Croll, was sanctioned by the Police and Government of the time, to go to Tasmania and sign for Robert's second wife and widow, Jean Boyes, the over 200 paintings left unsigned for security reasons - in Robert's studio. This was legally enabled, as under British, Empire, and now Commonwealth law, a painting is a 'made object', and therefore, any mark upon it is a trademark. The law also covers the point that any person of experience regarding that object can place a trade mark upon it. Under our laws, signatures can only legitimise a document, letter or cheque. I purchased the painting many years ago from a Private Dealer in Melbourne, Nevill Healy, who told me it was one of two Tom Roberts sold to his vendor's family by R. H. Croll in Melbourne, and that the figure on the wall was Roberts' first wife Elizabeth. Portrait of Elizabeth Roberts by TOM ROBERTS 1910 A hard thing for me to prove after all these years. As it always does, however, sometimes after many years the wheel of fate turns. A few years ago, another painting of Elizabeth by Tom Roberts dated 1910 turned up at auction (also illustrated above), and lo and behold, she is wearing the same variegated fur and undercoat. In those days good Winter clothes were not discarded, Q.E.D. Leigh Murphy 2017

Sung into Being: Aboriginal Masterworks 1984-94 comes to QAG
A
major exhibition of Indigenous Australian art - including more than 100 paintings and sculptures by eight Australian Aboriginal artists from the Janet Holmes á Court Collection, are currently on display at the Queensland Art Gallery. The exhibition captures an intensely productive and exciting period, when Aboriginal art first began to be exhibited and collected as fine art, and embodies both the stylised aesthetic of the Kimberley and the colour palette and imagery of central and southern Arnhem Land. Janet and the late Robert Holmes á Court developed their internationally renowned art collection together from the 1960s through to 1990, when Robert died suddenly. Janet has continued the acquisition of works for the collection since that time. Motivated by a keen interest in Australian and Indigenous art, their resulting collection is a wonderful legacy of Australian cultural significance. Artists represented in the exhibition include: Rover Joolama Thomas (c1926-1998); Jack Wunuwun (1930-91); John Bulunbulun (1946-2010); Jack Kalakala (1925-87); Les Mirrikkuriya (1932-95); England Banggala (1925-2001); and Terry Ngamandara Wilson (1950-21011) - from a creative period when these Indigenous artists were exploring new ground, and the works were acquired at the time with great foresight by both Janet and Robert Holmes á Court. NS ‘TREE OF LOVEr’ Acrylic on Canvas Julia Carter
HELEN PEEL THE ARTIST Rich portraits and life scenes reveal a powerful colouring technique and an eye for detail from this contemporary Australian artist. Working exclusively with oils, Helen is an accomplished realist, bringing stories to life with light, shade and movement, in exquisitely delicate brushwork and luminous, vibrant colours. On each canvas she lays the foundation of a pencil drawing, likening her technique to building a house – layering for perspective depth – that leads to works of detailed architecture, vivid florals and luxurious fabrics, all conjured with a variety of brushes, palette knife or rags. Helen’s love of portraiture reveals a talent for expressing a light in the eyes, and a life in the lines, as each canvas conveys the true character of her subject. But it is her use of the complicated and dramatic “rub-off “ technique that shows her intimate knowledge of light and detail at its best. Already in private collections throughout Australia and overseas, Helen Peel staged her first solo exhibition in 2010. Helen’s latest exhibition promises to be a fantastic visual feast!. Her latest exhibition will be held at the Julia Carter Gallery in Gateway Drive, Noosaville on 27th - 28th October, 2017.

GORILLA THRILLER… For a truly sublime wilderness escape, it is hard to surpass Uganda, the undiscovered pearl of Africa. A lush landscape of deep lakes, glacial alpine mountains, wide-open savannah, and dense rainforests. A country that boasts wildlife not found anywhere else - making a safari here an unforgettable experience.
O
f course, Uganda is perhaps best known for its concentration of primates, including its most celebrated residents – half the world’s remaining Mountain Gorilla population. And, one of the best places to see them is - Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp located in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the country’s southwest. Tucked away on a flat ridge deep within the Forest, this exclusive luxury camp comprises just eight tents, and is one of the most remote and atmospheric locations in Africa. Frequently visited by gorilla families due to its unique location, it is the perfect base for a once in a lifetime encounter with Mountain Gorillas. Of course, Uganda is one of several countries where it is still possible to observe gorillas in the wild. But the recent move by Rwandan authorities to implement a significant price hike for compulsory gorilla trekking permits from US$750 to US $1,500 per person for all visitors earlier this year, has added significantly to it’s appeal, with Ugandan permits considerably more affordable at just US$600 per person. Along the foreshore, helpful information centre staff will book tours for you to visit Fraser Island (the world's largest sand island, and home to Australia's purest dingos), as well as trips to the mystical Everglades, or themed cruises. Little brown ducks waddle along happily as they wait for a new friend to share their lunch with them; as seagulls squall high above and around any picnickers table. With playgrounds and exercise equipment, as well as electric barbecues, and covered table and bench seating positioned around the area, it is the perfect place for a family get together. The carefree nature of the area is mirrored by the gentle wings of the pelicans as they soar high above before coasting in to the shoreline in search of the prime position for sleeping or checking out the chance of catching a fish down below; as those wishing to spend some time on the water hire kayaks, paddle boards, small boats and pontoons from the local boat shed operators. If not so inclined, you can still enjoy the river by hopping aboard the ferry for a leisurely cruise. All this and only 10 minutes drive from Hastings Street. What are you waiting for?
