welcome... Dear Readers,

Welcome to our spring edition! This issue is packed with happy news about our town and its wonderful people. It's heartwarming to see how our local community continue to show their support for Ukraine by fundraising and donating. Our thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine and the Ukrainian community in Rochdale. Rochdale has strong links to Ukraine, and since 1992 has been twinned with the city of Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine. In this issue, we're excited to have an exclusive interviews with The Fratellis who return to Rochdale Feel Good Festival this August, and singer Josh Hindle, who recently appeared on ITV's Starstruck as Michael Bublé. We also catch up with with award winning TV Production Designer, Luana Hanson, known for Channel 4's It's A Sin and Netflix's Stay Close.

Spring has sprung at Hare Hill Park: Phill Connell

Our Mental Health Editor, Brad Gartland chats to rugby legend Matty Ashton while Lucy Fieldhouse meets local artist Doodlher. Rochdale mum, Catherine Aspinall, shares some fantastic ideas for family days out this spring and Steve Cooke has put together a comprehensive guide to what's on in The Arts. There's also a Good Food & Drink section, a guide to Rochdale Town Centre's thriving independent food & drink venues and mouthwatering recipes from top culinary duo Tom McNeeney and Richard Rodriguez. There's so much happening across the borough this spring/summer... The Feel Good Festival makes a very welcome return after a two year break and there's lots of plans for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee celebrations. We're delighted to be sponsoring Rochdale Musical Theatre Company's latest production, Broadway musical comedy, The Producers. Thank you to Mike Wignall & Zac Grenier (Max Bialystock & Leo Bloom) for featuring on this edition's cover. This hilarious show is set to open at Champness Hall 12th-21st May. We can't wait... get your seats booked and we'll see you there!

THE FRATELLIS

Indie rock band The Fratellis will headline Rochdale Feel Good Festival this summer when it returns on Saturday 13 August. Since winning the Best British Breakthrough gong at the BRIT Awards, the multi-platinum Glaswegian three-piece have enjoyed huge success, with 5 top 20 albums and 5 top 40 singles. The Fratellis first album – Costello Music sold more than one million copies in the UK alone. While they’ve enjoyed a string of hits, including Whistle for the Choir, Henrietta and Mistress Mable they are best known for the anthemic Chelsea Dagger, which remains a playlist staple at sports stadia, clubs and bars worldwide. They have gone from strength to strength winning a new generation of fans thanks to 2018’s top 5 album In Your Own Sweet Time, followed by 2021’s acclaimed Half-Drunk Under a Full Moon.

Style caught up with Jon Fratelli ahead of the band's return to Rochdale this summer...

4 | Rochdale Style

Style: Going back to the start, where did you all meet? Jon Fratelli: Our origin story is a thing of mystery and always has been, but we are very close friends and brothers in arms who get to go out and play music we love together, to people who also love the songs back. What does the beginning matter when the present is like that? You’ve got a busy year ahead - you must be very excited to get back on the road again after so long without live music events? Yeah, it’s been difficult, as of course it has been for everyone. I know how lucky we are and how much so many people have suffered, but losing the chance to go out and play live to people has genuinely affected us all. We are using it as a positive where we can, channelling all that loneliness and frustration into excitement about these shows. So if you’re coming along, you’re going to see the results of two years away from the stage bursting out of us. It’s maybe made all of us appreciate what we have a little more – the fact we get to do this has never been lost on us, but if anything I think we now know that even more. We will certainly never forget how lucky we are to have our fans there night after night signing our songs back at us. That was what I really missed.

You’ve headlined Rochdale Feel Good Festival once before in 2016 - are you looking forward to returning this August? What can festival goers expect? It’s a great festival and one we are looking forward to getting back to. Summer and festivals just go hand in hand, and that’s another thing that made the last couple of summers feel just wrong. This chance to be back reconnecting is priceless. We have changed things up quite a lot, so I think there will be a few surprises for people who haven’t seen us for a while – we have added to the band and really rounded out the sound in a very new and exciting way. I’ve rearranged a lot of the songs and I think the new versions really breathe new life into the classics in a lot of ways. If you saw our streamed performances last year with the brass and the girls backing us, then that gives you an idea of what to expect. It’s certainly brought new life to those songs for me and I’ve fallen in love with a lot of them all over again, so I think – I hope – it will be the same for a lot of fans. What did you guys get up to over lockdown? Lockdown was rough, as of course it was for the whole world – again I want to stress I know how lucky we are. We’re all here, apart from anything else. And we are now back doing what we love. Re-arranging all the back catalogue to make a whole new live show was very time consuming but completely worth it.

I love what we have done and I can’t wait to take it out and show everyone. Apart from that it was writing, making plans and just trying to focus on family and life as well. You released a new album last year (Half Drunk Under A Full Moon) - for those who haven’t heard it yet, how would you describe it? I think it’s our best record. It brings together a lot of our loves, from that beautiful big 60s pop sound to the cinematic feel. It’s one we are very proud of and it played a big part in shaping this new direction too. Going back to rearrange the old songs was quite a monumental task, but it was completely worth it. 'Need a Little Love' from that album for me really is a good summing up of where we are right now as a band. Do you still enjoy playing Chelsea Dagger as much as the crowds love hearing it?! Of course. We will never be one of those bands who drop the hits to play B-sides – we’ll play the hits AND the B-sides. Especially now when times are so tough financially and just in life for people, the whole point of coming to a show is to hear music you love and escape from it all for a little while. That’s what we will always try to give to the people who come see us play. And it gives us an amazing escape too. If we all feel that together then I am happy. (continued...) Rochdale Style | 5

(...continued)

Do you have an all-time favourite track? The one I have just finished writing is usually my favourite. Until I write the next one! Where do you find inspiration? Musically I am inspired by so much, from everyday life to records I hear and fall in love with. Films can inspire a lot too. Highlight of your career so far... I think just to still be here, and about to head off on a tour, with plans for international dates and things, has to be the highlight after all of that being taken away for two years. It’s not about the money, it’s about that connection and that feeling of being on stage and with people who love our music. You’re working towards making The Fratellis one of the first fully climate positive bands in the world… Yes, we all have to think about this stuff – it should be important to everyone, whatever scale that is on – if you’re doing one little thing, that adds up, so think about it. We are starting with looking at carbon emissions as that is the most obvious thing to address. So our carbon footprint will be calculated, we will reduce what we can and offset the rest.

6 | Rochdale Style

We’re looking at so much other stuff, from using sustainable materials to produce merchandise, to some crazy ideas I can’t share just yet. It’s a big part of our future and I’m really passionate about it. We are working with Melinda Woolf of the Future For Humanity Foundation who is involved with the United Nations Global Goals, so it’s incredible having someone like that as part of the team trying to genuinely change how we do things as a band, and personally. We need to do what we can, we all do. Tell us one thing people don’t know about The Fratellis? We're all gutted that Neighbours has been cancelled!

Finally, we have so many aspiring musicians and new bands here in Rochdale - what advice would you give them? Keep going. It will seem thankless and impossible at times but keep going. Enjoy it whatever level you’re at because at some point you will look back on the simpler early days with nostalgia. Write songs, have fun playing them with your friends and hopefully other people will enjoy them too – that’s when it starts to get really fun. The Fratellis play Rochdale Feel Good Festival on Saturday 13 August. Tickets and more details at: rochdalefeelgoodfestival.co.uk Ruth Parkinson

Bialystock & Bloom: Mike Wignall & Zac Grenier Photographer: Jackie Meredith

BROADWAY MUSICAL COMEDY THE PRODUCERS SET TO OPEN AT CHAMPNESS HALL Following the huge success, rave reviews and sell-out performances of Legally Blonde The Musical in October 2021, Rochdale Musical Theatre Company (RMTC) are excited to announce their next production, 'The Producers'!

Combine the line-up with musical direction by Chris Addington, an impressive 12-piece orchestra, and choreography by Nikki Cooke, Director of Legacy Dance Academy, and this production will truly showcase the incredible talent we have locally.

Tickets are now on sale for this hit Broadway musical comedy which is set to open at the magnificent Champness Hall in Rochdale Town Centre from 12th - 21st May 2022.

Readers may be familiar with the film version of The Producers - Mel Brooks' classic 1967 cult comedy starring Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, or more recently, the 2005 remake starring Will Ferrell, Matthew Broderick, Uma Thurman and Nathan Lane.

This laugh-out-loud all singing, all dancing comedy is the perfect remedy for those who have been longing for a night out at the theatre. And what's more... it's right here on your doorstep! No city centre parking or expensive ticket prices, just a fantastic musical experience right here in Rochdale... and an upbeat, catchy soundtrack that is absolutely guaranteed to stick in your head! RMTC Director, Jess Bray, commented: "I can't believe we are back here again and getting ready for another exciting production with RMTC... I am still in shock at the talent we have in this cast. Our ensemble and supporting cast would not be out of place in a principal line up. Team that up with a production dream team, a very funny script and superb score... this is going to be a sensational show!" The talented principal line up includes Mike Wignall as Max Bialystock, Zac Grenier as Leo Bloom, Annabelle Taylor as Ulla Inga...Svanson, Mike Twigg as Carmen Ghia, Ben Maguire as Franz Liebkind and Josh Hindle - who recently appeared as Michael Bublé on ITV's Starstruck - as Roger DeBris. 10 | Rochdale Style

As a big Broadway musical, The Producers set the standard for modern, outrageous, in-your-face humour, winning a record twelve Tony Awards. So, what's the plot...? A down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered, nervous accountant come up with a scheme to produce the most notorious flop in history thereby swindling their backers (all "little old ladies") out of millions of dollars. Only one thing goes awry: the show is a smash hit! The show follows the antics of Max Bialystock and Leo Bloom as they manoeuvre their way fecklessly through finding a show (the gloriously offensive "Springtime For Hitler"), hiring a director, raising the money and finally going to prison for their misdeeds. At the core of the insanely funny adventure is a poignant emotional journey of two very different men who become friends. With a truly hysterical book co-written by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan (known for Annie and Hairspray) and music and lyrics by Mr. Brooks, The Producers definitely isn't one to miss!

RMTC Chairman, Dan Killeen, commented: "After the success of bringing musical theatre back to the centre of Rochdale last year with our production of 'Legally Blonde', I am delighted that we will be returning again to Champness Hall in May with 'The Producers'. We have managed to keep our brilliant production and technical team and all of the committee at RMTC are really excited about how this show is coming together. "Once again we are working with some fantastic Rochdale companies including Storage World, Style Magazine, The Lancashire Hospitality Co-operation and WhatsOccurrinRochdale. We are so grateful for all of their support and hope that the Rochdale community will get behind their local theatre company once again!" RMTC are proud to announce Springhill Hospice as their charity partner for the year. Hospice mascot, Springy, recently called in to rehearsals to meet the cast and it turns out he's a bit of a thespian himself!

Jenna Kavanagh, Springhill Hospice Community Fundraiser commented: "We are delighted to be partnering with RMTC as their chosen charity for the year. There are lots of brilliant fundraising initiatives ahead and with their abundance of enthusiasm we can’t wait to see what can be achieved. We would like to thank the company members for all their efforts so far and we can’t wait to see their upcoming production of The Producers!" Finally, a night at the theatre wouldn't be complete without drinks and snacks! These will be provided at Champness Hall by The Lancashire Hospitality Co-operation - the award winning team behind popular venues such as The Flying Horse Hotel and The Baum. So, what are you waiting for? Get your family and friends together for a spectacular night of music and laughter and show your support for local theatre.

Springy will be attending opening night of The Producers, where £1 from every ticket will be donated to the hospice as well as a raffle, proceeds from their 200 Club and further fundraising events throughout 2022. RMTC have also invited a number of Springhill Hospice staff to opening night as a token of appreciation for their efforts during the pandemic and the amazing service they continue to provide.

The Producers runs from 12th - 21st May 2022 at Champness Hall, Drake Street, Rochdale. Tickets £16, available now at: www.whatsoccurrinrochdale.co.uk

NEW VIDEO PUTS ROCHDALE TOWN CENTRE

INDEPENDENTS CENTRE STAGE

Rochdale Town Centre's burgeoning food and drink scene takes centre stage in an exciting new promotional video. The creative new video by Manchester-based Conservant Studio, cements Rochdale town centre's growing reputation as a 'northern powerhouse' for high quality food and drink. But don't just take our word for it, see for yourself at: www.rochdalebid.co.uk/promoting Ned Poulter, CEO & Founder of Conservant Studio, commented: "I'm a little embarrassed to admit that, as someone who's lived in and around Greater Manchester for the past ~15 years, my travels hadn't ever taken me to Rochdale. This changed when Conversant Studio were invited to work in conjunction with Rochdale BID and Rochdale Borough Council in an effort to help promote the fantastic independent food and drink venues the town has to offer. "Contrary to popular belief, there's only so much staging that you can do shooting food and drink, what really makes you stand out is having excellent product made with quality ingredients. This was exactly what we saw in the multiple venues we shot at. Both me and the team couldn't believe what we'd been missing out on!

"We're incredibly excited to continue our work in helping to raise awareness for the town centre's excellent food and drink offering, helping it to bounce back from a very difficult couple years of trading. I see no reason why Rochdale shouldn't be regularly mentioned alongside the likes of other Greater Manchester 'foodie hotspots' like Altrincham, Didsbury, Stockport, and Sale." Paul Ambrose, Rochdale BID Manager commented: "As the town centre continues to evolve at its centre will be the growing and exciting food and drink offer which is being led by group of independents who care passionately about the centre. "Working with the Council and Conservant Studio provided venues with the opportunity to promote their outstanding products and I hope this video helps patrons to find their new favourite local venue, support old favourites, and discover another reason to love Rochdale Town Centre." The video showcases the growing array of quality independent cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs in the town centre and there really is something to suit every occasion, taste and budget, from rustic wine bars to historic pubs; Indian street food to authentic Italian cuisine; afternoon tea to gin trees!

The much improved and re-branded Baillie Street Quarter is home to Petit Bistro where you can find everything from bottomless brunches to club sandwiches and delicious hearty meals. The Baum

Also in the Baillie Street Quarter is hidden gem, Vicolo Del Vino, a beautiful rustic wine bar combining real traditional Italian food with an array of specialist wine, beer and gin from around the world. SPRINGFIELD PARK

Marland, OL11 4RE There is some parking within the park itself

Have you visited Springfield Park since the new playground was built? There is a pirate themed area for the little ones, including a ship and a slide. There’s also an area for older children, with some interesting climbing apparatus! For those who like to take bikes and scooters to the park, there is a nice flat path around the tennis courts and the “duck” pond (which is actually dominated by very hungry geese) and one big hill for the daredevils! In April the miniature railway will open again, and trains will run on a Sunday afternoon, 1-4pm.

THE PLUNGE

Edenfield, BL0 0RB

The award for the waterfall with the best name definitely goes to… THE PLUNGE!! To find it, walk along the aptly named Plunge Road, which turns into a path, and simply turn right when you hear the sound of spouting water. Or carry straight along the path to a lovely clearing in the trees, complete with a stone picnic table and the gently flowing, shallow Dearden Brook (you know what for...!).

ASHWORTH VALLEY

Spanning between Norden, Bamford and Birtle There are various places to enter Ashworth Valley, but we usually choose Blackpits Road (OL11 5NG)

There’s so much to discover in this peaceful wooded valley, and reading about the history of the place is fascinating! Its industrial past is still apparent in the form of eerily beautiful ruins, my favourites being Ashworth Mill with the adjacent waterfall, and Coal Bank Mill with its little bridge. Naden Brook babbles through the valley, occasionally allowing for splashing and stone throwing, and even Pooh sticks (beware of steep drops if visiting with young children). I often find it hard to get my bearings in Ashworth Valley (it’s so big), so I would recommend following an established route.

Catherine Aspinall, a local mum of two lively children and an equally energetic pug, shares her top family day out ideas. With a love for exploring and the outdoors, Catherine and her family are always out and about, having fun adventures in Rochdale & the North West. Follow on Facebook & Instagram @wherewegoingmummy HOPWOOD WOODS

Near Middleton We parked near Hopwood Hall College, in a lay-by at M24 6XH, but there are various different access points

Hopwood Woods are a lovely place to explore in all seasons, but even more so now that they are home to the GRUFFALO!! The woods are so much bigger than you would expect from the road, and there are streams to throw stones in, bridges to run across, tree stumps to climb on and logs to balance along… you could easily spend a good couple of hours exploring. Although some of the paths are pram-able, to get the most from your visit I would take a carrier, as some parts are very uneven and steep. Whilst searching for the Gruffalo you might also see some other impressive wood carvings, including an owl, a rabbit, a squirrel, a kingfisher and a woodpecker! Will you find them all? If all of your exploring builds up an appetitekeep your eyes peeled for the gorgeous carved picnic table for a rest and a snack. Or, if it leaves you eager for more, then you could head across the road to Boarshaw Clough. 16 | Rochdale Style

ROCHDALE PIONEERS MUSEUM

Toad Lane, OL12 0NU There are a number of car parks close by, including on Hunters Lane (OL16 1YL) and Reed Hill (OL16 1DX)

It is a long time since I last went to the Rochdale Pioneers Museum… probably on a school trip back in the 1990s… and so a visit was well overdue. Even approaching the museum is an experience in itself… As when you walk along the cobbles, admire the old co-op tea advert on the wall and spot the red pillar box and the gas lamps, you really do feel that you have stepped back in time. The building itself is regarded as the birthplace of the good old Co-op, and as you enter you will find a replica of the original shop, which simply involved a plank of wood laid across two barrels and basically some flour, butter and milk… There were no frozen ready-meals to be had back then! The museum tells the story of the modern co-operative movement, and its significant impact on societal reform. It is amazing when you realise the influence of the Rochdale Pioneers on issues such as fair trade, women’s rights and education… something our town should be proud of!

Whilst you are digesting all the interesting information your kids can also be inadvertently learning by filling in the trail sheets, answering quiz questions and watching videos or, if they are younger, simply playing in the old-fashioned shop. A LOT has changed in the museum since my last visit but the opportunity to role-play serving and buying goods in a pretend Victorian shop is definitely my favourite addition! I think my kids would also agree, as they spent a good hour or so counting out eggs and weighing vegetables on the scales, whilst dressed in suitable (and very cute) attire. Although the museum is only small, it is definitely worth a visit, especially as it is so close to the town centre and also FREE to enter (with donations being very welcome). It is currently open Wednesday-Sunday from 10:30 until 4. The Baum pub is next door to the museum also giving off those great “old fashioned vibes”, but whilst serving up delicious food and drink.

HEALEY DELL NATURE RESERVE

There are various places to access Healey Dell, but the car park at the end of Station Road (OL12 8RT) gives you the option to either take the long straight path or venture down the uneven path to the Fairies Chapel.

Healey Dell is BEAUTIFUL... If you can just banish from your mind the vision of the two freaky killers on Netflix's ‘Stay Close’ dancing underneath the viaduct!! It’s a place of two halves really; it has a great flat path (an old railway line), which is perfect for pram pushing, jogging or pedal practice, but there are also lots of “off-shoots” for the more adventurous (some of which might require some hand holding). There’s waterfalls to admire, streams in which to throw stones, trees to hide behind and a number of ponds to feed ducks or spot fish in. But obviously my son’s favourite bit is pretending to be a steam train chugging across the bridge… He also likes the ‘plop pump track’, which is situated right at the top end of the nature reserve, close to Massey Croft (OL12 8PZ). At the opposite end, about a mile and a half away, is the Healey Dell Tearooms (OL12 6BG), serving up a variety of tasty treats, from breakfast to afternoon tea, and milkshakes to cocktails. Dogs are welcome too. Rochdale Style | 17

The Rochdale entrepreneur on a mission to make your Wills & Wishes Legal According to research, the number of UK adults without a Will in place is at an all-time high.

I work hard to make sure my clients are completely happy with the service provided and I'm very proud of my fantastic five star Google reviews and Facebook reviews.

A staggering 60% of UK adults currently don't have a Will and an estimated 92% don't have a Lasting Power of Attorney.

Where did you train? I have a Law degree, went to Chester Law school, then trained and qualified as a solicitor in Leeds. Before setting up the business, I worked as a solicitor for over 20 years and became a member of The Society of Will Writers achieving their safe to do business with accreditation.

Local entrepreneur, Fiona Daly is on a mission to change that, at least for the people of Rochdale! Fiona hopes to raise awareness of the importance of Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney, demystify the process of getting these in place and debunk some of the myths surrounding them. Style spoke to Fiona to find out more... When did you start Wills & Wishes Legal? I started my company in February 2021 after many years of wondering whether to go for it! I’d been employed as a solicitor since 2000. Lockdown gave me time to really think about putting my plans into action. Why did you start the company? I wanted to raise the awareness and importance of not just making a Will but also making sure that as many people as possible have Lasting Powers of Attorney in place. I know from my experience that people just don’t understand how vital these legal documents are to them and their loved ones and put off making them until it’s too late. I want to change this. Where are you based? I’m based in Rochdale - where I've lived all of my life - and cover all of Rochdale and the surrounding areas. I often get asked to prepare Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney for friends and family of friends who don’t live in Rochdale. Then I set up a Zoom video call to get them sorted with their documents. What services does Wills & Wishes Legal provide? We provide professional Will writing and estate planning services. We specialise in providing Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney, trusts, probate assistance and document storage. What sets you apart from other similar companies? I'd like to think its me, my knowledge, expertise and the person I am. I aim to provide friendly and caring services and will go the extra mile to help my clients. I specialise in Wills and estate planning so I’m not a Jack of all trades. I make the process of making your legal documents easy to understand and affordable. My costs are fixed and I offer an at home service so there’s no need to find our offices or pay for travel. My appointments are flexible at times to suit you so I can provide evening and weekend appointments, not just 9-5.

Why is it so important that people make a Will? To provide protection for you and your loved ones. You are protected as you decide who inherits from you rather than the legal system. Your loved ones are protected because they can be provided for and it makes it easier, less stressful and less costly for them to sort your affairs out when you’ve gone. It saddens me when, week after week, common issues come up when I speak to callers, such as people not knowing where to start or thinking it’s too much hassle. Some people don’t understand the terminology in their Will, can’t remember who wrote their Will and where it is being kept (I help them find it!). People can also put off making a Will as they don’t want to make difficult decisions such as who should look after their children if they are no longer here. Who should make a Will? Everybody who is 18 or older should make a Will. They’re not just for the elderly or rich. It’s really important to make one whatever your situation - whether you’re married or not, in a civil partnership, have children, step children or foster children, when you’re a homeowner, if you’re separated, going through divorce or divorced, if you’ve recently inherited from someone, if you have a business, or if you retire. Making a Will can seem like a daunting or overwhelming task - How do you help make the process easier? I’m friendly and approachable and make the process simple and easy to understand. Appointments are a relaxed chat, which take about an hour over a brew. There’s no legal jargon. What are your hopes for the business going forward? To become Rochdale’s Will Lady! To raise awareness of why Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney are so important and to help service the local community. Be the go-to company that provides an affordable, easy, friendly at home service, help people to get professionally written Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney and highlighting the dangers of writing these documents yourself or doing it online without advice.

MATTY'S MENTAL HEALTH MESSAGE Style's Mental Health Editor, Brad Gartland, chats to Matty Ashton, Rochdale-born professional Rugby League player for the Warrington Wolves and England Knights. Matty provides an invaluable insight into life as an athlete and highlights the importance of looking after our mental health. Why did I choose to interview a professional rugby league player about mental health? Athletes don’t go through any struggles, do they? Growing up, I made the following key misconceptions: I thought my dad was invincible; I believed he could handle anything out in front of him, and I thought he could handle it all on his own. Why did I think this? My dad always acted so positive, so why would he ever have a negative thought? He was also a rugby player. Whenever he got suffered a knock, he got back up and carried on and that’s how I thought he dealt with things mentally. His passing taught me that you should never take anyone’s mental state for granted and that athletes are humans too - something that this article can hopefully address. 20 | Rochdale Style

Watching sport, from grassroot to professional level and seeing an athlete in their best physical shape, can lead us to believe that they’re also in their best mental state too. Just because someone is at the top of their career, it doesn’t mean that they haven’t got any struggles. In fact, it’s extremely important that these people are aware how much help there is out there. We’re all human after all. Matty Ashton is a professional Rugby League player for the Warrington Wolves and England Knights. Before joining Warrington in the Super League, Matty was named Championship Young Player of the Year and was the leading try scorer in the Championship in 2019 with 23 tries in 22 games. As well as being in top physical condition, Matty is eager to express how important it is to look after his mental health, what

support systems are in place for athletes such as himself, and shares some advice for you, the reader – as you never know when you may need it. Matty has also raised over £1,500 for Andy’s Man Club, a male mental health charity, by completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks along with friends in December 2020 (pictured below).

In this interview, Matty gives his honest opinion to questions that will continue to break down the barriers between historical macho stereotypes and mental health... Have you had any personal struggles with rugby? Experiencing a serious injury in my first professional season (early 2020) made me feel like I went five steps back. After putting so much work to get where I was, then to be told I may not be playing rugby for a few months was hard news to take. Fortunately for me, not long after (March 2020), the rugby season took a break for covid which meant I didn’t miss out on as much game time. It was a struggle most days to build the motivation to carry out rehab from home, but with the great help of the Warrington Wolves sports staff ringing me every day, showing support, and providing guidance, this really helped me through this time. I’m very grateful for their support. What other struggles can athletes face? Being in the spotlight can be hard for many athletes. If you don’t play as well as you’d have liked, it’s completely understandable if athletes come away from social media to avoid seeing any negative comments. Athletes can also struggle to ask for help. We are often seen as tough individuals, so we often feel like we should deal with everything on our own which can be dangerous. It’s very important that we understand how much support there is for us and I urge everyone to reach out if they’re struggling. How do you look after your own mental health? I like to take my dog on big walks around 2-3 times a week. I feel this puts my mind at rest and it gives me that break I need to focus on myself. I also like to go into the steam room and sauna as this clears my mind and helps me feel physically refreshed which is really important to me. We all have our own reasons for taking up sport. What does rugby mean to you? I loved rugby since I was a child and it’s always been a hobby of mine. It’s not just about the memories you make on the field, it’s also about the mates you make for life off the field too. I am one of the lucky ones as I’m a full time rugby player and I’m honestly living my dream since I was a child.

What help is out there for people struggling with mental health in rugby? Rugby League Cares is a great organisation that has so many initiatives, such as ‘offload’, ‘ahead of the game’, and ‘know your players’. ‘Offload’ is delivered in partnership with many clubs providing an environment of support for players and communities – sessions are open to any men (aged 16+) and you don’t have to be involved in rugby to take part in the offload sessions. State of Mind is a charity that raises awareness of the issues surrounding mental health and wellbeing, delivering it’s messages across rugby league and union, as well as other sports. Each club has welfare managers to offer any support and to put you in contact with the right people too. At Warrington, we greet each other and shake everyone’s hand each day to show a sign of support and to create an inclusive and welcoming environment. It makes me feel comfortable knowing that there is help out there if I need it. With a retirement age of ~32 years, it’s understandable that athletes can struggle with life after sport. Is there any help for players coping with retirement? It’s understandable that players can experience difficulties when they retire, especially if you’ve devoted your life to sport. I believe it’s important to also work on something outside of your sport too, so when you do retire, you already have other things to focus on. What would you say to the reader if they’re struggling? There is always support out there and don’t be afraid to reach out. No matter our job title or house size it’s important to realise that we are all human, we all have our struggles, and we all need to realise how much help there is for us. If you’ve got anything on your mind at all, please talk about it.

LUANA HANSON

It's A Sin © RED

Production Comp

any & All3Media

Rochdale-born Production Designer Luana Hanson is the creative mind behind the sets of many popular television dramas and films, most recently Channel 4's It's A Sin and Netflix's Stay Close. Luana recently received a prestigious Royal Television Society Award for her incredible work on It's A Sin - a multi-award-winning, five part series written and created by Russell T Davies. Style caught up with Luana to discuss her exciting career, filming in her hometown and why creativity is in her genes... 24 | Rochdale Style

Style: Did you grow up in Rochdale? Luana: Yes! I was brought up in Cutgate and lived there until I was about 18. I went to Shawfield Middle School and then Oulder Hill Community School. I think Rochdale gives you a good backbone. Some really talented, creative people have come out of Rochdale, and Oulder Hill especially, such as Lisa Stansfield, Ian Devaney and TV presenter Claire Sutton. Tell us a bit about your role as Production Designer… I’m responsible for many aspects you see on the screen. Not the costumes although I work very closely with the costume designer, but everything else – whether it’s a gun, special effect, a house interior, a vehicle, an action prop! Anything visual you see is part of our art department.

It's A Sin © RED Production Company & All3Media

One day, while I was working at one of these parties I was literally washing some brushes out at a sink and met a guy who was doing the PG Tips commercials with the monkeys! I got chatting to him, took my portfolio to his studio and he took me on as his assistant. I worked with him for about two years and he taught me so much about what the job entailed. I then applied to the Royal College of Art to do a Masters in Design for Film. I studied there for two years and then started in art departments as an assistant art director and worked my way up from there. Do you have an all-time favourite production?

I’m usually on set first thing in the morning or the night before a shoot and I hand the set over to the director. Then I’m straight onto dressing the next set!

I loved working on Nil by Mouth – a long time ago. I was an Art Director then, not a designer, but Gary Oldman who was just fantastic to work with...

Flowers on Channel 4, with Olivia Coleman, was a beautiful job too. You received a Royal Television Society Award late last year for It’s A Sin with the judging panel describing your production design as “atmospheric and authentic, feeling and breathing every moment of the characters… it really punched above its weight” – how did that feel? It was fantastic and so lovely to receive! I always say it isn’t just me though who creates the sets. I work with a big group of people so we need to cut the award up and have a piece each! There were 220 sets on It’s A Sin so it was a tough but enjoyable job for everyone. Our team are down to the final three for a British Film Designers Guild Award as well which is coming up soon in London, so that’s exciting. (continued...)

How did you first get into production design? I started off at Liverpool doing a degree in Fashion and Textiles. I always wanted to do set design but I wasn’t sure how to get into it. One of my lecturers from university used to design these huge parties in London for pop stars and record companies and she asked if I wanted to help her design them. So, I ended up designing about 60-80 themed parties for people like Michael Jackson, Elton John and George Michael. We did the Red Hot and Blue party which was the first party for Elton John’s Aids Foundation. Rochdale Style | 25

(...continued)

Where do you start when you’re designing a new television series or film?

It's A Sin © RED Production Company & All3Media International

I get a script and then break it down into locations and sets. Then work out how many scenes are in each location/set and the budget according to that. If there are a lot of scenes in one location, such as the flat in It’s A Sin, you can warrant building a set. Whereas, if there was only a couple of scenes it’s just not worth it, so you’d look for a location. Then we start to work on sketching and dressing the set. There’s so much detail that goes into every scene, even if it’s just on screen for seconds! A few scenes in Stay Close were shot in and around Rochdale - did you choose those locations yourself? Yes! So we turned the interior of Touchstones into an Oncology ward and we used the exterior as a solicitors. And then we filmed in Healey Dell near the viaduct. For The Fattest Man in Britain we used a house exterior up on Roch Valley. And for It’s A Sin we used a house on Shelfield Lane in Norden. I knew it from when my friend Leah used to live there and we needed to find a house from the 80s, on a hill (then we could CGI the sea so it looked like the Isle of Wight!).

He was Head of Studio at Madame Tussauds and sculpted so many celebrities and royalty. He definitely underplayed how many well-known people he’d sculpted; some I didn’t find out about until recently when I was looking through his studio. I even found a video of my dad teaching Michael Jackson how to moonwalk when they were inventing the first animatronic waxwork!

Best - Working with great people and creating something that comes to life; you do a drawing of a set and then within a matter of days or weeks you see it three dimensionally, and that’s really exciting, watching it come together. Worst - You wear scruffy clothes all day and the hours are long!! One day on Stay Close we were working in a grotty café in Blackpool, half derelict, cups full of mould, no toilets, freezing with a gale blowing outside… oh the glamour!

Are a lot of your productions filmed up North?

Your creativity must run in the family as your dad, Ian Hanson, was a well known artist in Rochdale... Yes, sadly my dad passed away at Christmas aged 91. He was a portrait sculptor who used to teach at Rochdale College of Art. He was commissioned to sculpt the Queen, Princess Diana, Sophia Loren, Winston Churchill…!

26 | Rochdale Style

Not really! I also work as an Interior Designer, so I’m designing a house in Alderley Edge at the moment. I do everything from colour changes, to structural work, complete renovations. So it’s a similar discipline to film and television but obviously it’s for real whereas tv and film sets aren't! What are the best and worst aspects of your job?

So obviously, it’s all because I grew up in Rochdale and when I’m trying to find locations I’m recalling places that I know of!

Quite a few! It’s A Sin, Stay Close, Last Tango in Halifax, a film called The Mark of Cain that was all about Iraq – we filmed in Tunisia and Manchester. I’m currently working on an exciting drama for Channel 4 in Manchester.

Do you ever have a day off?!

My mum, Christine Pearson (Christine Hanson) is very creative too; she was part of the Rochdale Sculptors, who really broke the mould (excuse the pun) with the way they worked. She was the only female sculptor in that group too! What would be your dream design job? I’ve just read my dream script actually but I can’t say what it is unfortunately! I prefer more emotional pieces about real people, or a big period film.

You can see the exciting things happening at Hopwood Hall College and University Centre at its ‘Access All Areas’ Open Event. With ongoing huge investment to its buildings and facilities, the college will open its doors to school leavers and adult learners from 4:30pm-7pm on Thursday 7th April. Year 11s can expect a great glimpse of college life as they learn about options such as Apprenticeships, BTECs and the revolutionary new T-Levels. People aged 19+ can also explore a wide selection of pathways, including part-time courses taking place in-person, online and on a flexible basis. In addition, those who want to access life-changing Higher Education without the hassle or expense of moving away can find out about Hopwood’s thriving University Centre.

Meanwhile, Rochdale (pictured above) features the most modern equipment for courses such as Media, Games Development and Esports.

Similarly, visitors can learn about Access – the fast-track route to university for people who don’t currently have the qualifications needed to advance to Higher Education.

These hi-tech spaces sit alongside areas like art studios, dental nursing labs and the contemporary Riverside Salon.

There are plenty of thrilling new sights to see at both campuses.

Julia Heap, Principal and CEO, said: “The college is getting bigger and better every day and I’d encourage people to get a taste of the exciting things to come.”

At Middleton (pictured right) there’s ambitious work ongoing, including a £6.1m extension to the 6,500sq-m Technology Centre. It’s just a stone’s throw from staples like the Sports Arena and the Hopwood Theatre.

“I expect visitors will be surprised by how much both campuses are transforming... We’re not stopping there either, with even more investment being made to ensure we keep providing the best education for people of all ages. “My advice would be to come and see for yourself because we’d love to show you exactly where you could be learning!”

"ROCHDALE WAS MY FIRST PROPER MUSE" How Rochdale has influenced artist DoodlHer's work Vic Whitaker (DoodlHer) creates stunning artwork that can be spotted at a variety of different locations across Rochdale. From murals and window decals, to prints and illustrations for beer cans, the artist's creative work encapsulates the charm of Rochdale. Rochdale Style Magazine chatted with Vic to find out all about her recent art projects, what inspires her work and what she hopes people take from her art. Style: Tell us a bit about you and your work Vic: I grew up over the hill from Rochdale in Rishworth and moved here about eight years ago. The switch from a rural to an urban environment was like a springboard for my creativity. I’d regularly go into Rochdale town centre to sit and draw. Previously I’d been really shy about drawing in public, but I gradually built up the courage and confidence to just do it. This is why so much of my work features Rochdale landmarks, people and buildings. Rochdale was my first proper muse. 28 | Rochdale Style

I categorise myself a pen illustrator. Pens are my primary tool and most of my work tells a story or has some kind of a theme behind it. Drawing with pen has always been a thing for me, even as a child. My dad did a lot of joinery and he used fine tip pens for his designs. I used to borrow them, they felt so grown-up. I loved creating strong black outlines and honing in on fine details. I guess that’s stuck. Nowadays I love combining my penwork with other mediums, including paint and digital. The same goes for surfaces. Although I mostly work on paper, I’ve also worked on wood, plaster, clay and slate. I split my Doodlher time between commissions and creating artwork for my shop. I love it when people come to me with the seed of an idea and I can help them develop it into a fully-fledged piece of art. I recently completed a beautiful commission that combined a pen illustration of a local landscape with Van Gogh’s Starry Night, painted in his style. I’ve also created illustrations for apparel, beer cans, and there’s my mural work too.

What inspires your art? It’s really hard to pinpoint exactly what inspires my art. I know that lockdown had a negative impact on my creativity. Being unable to get out experience the world made my productivity dwindle. Once restrictions were lifted, I was backup-and-doodling within a few months. So, life and the world - that’s what inspires me. My interests definitely influence what I draw. I’m interested in history, understanding how things came to be. Travel, food, culture. I also like the challenge of taking an idea and turning it into something tangible.

I’m a productive person. My head likes being busy and drawing is a great way for me to give it something to chew on. Tell us about some of your recent local projects One of the new things I’ve been playing with recently is the process of creating paper illustrations that can be displayed outside. They’re commonly known as ‘paste-ups’. During the Uprising street art festival that took place in Rochdale in the summer of 2019, a number of well-known paste-up artists spontaneously rocked up and hid their creations around Rochdale. Only a few of them remain today. It’s something I’ve always wanted to have a go at as it allows me to create artwork on paper at my desk without a time limit, then install it at a location outside. The first paste-up I actually created for Rochdale can be found at Voltalab Sound Studios on Kenion Street. It’s a big piece, it fills an old window. The second is a smaller illustration of two rats scurrying out of The Pint Pot on Baillie Street with a glass of ale. I’m currently working on another piece featuring Gracie Fields. It’s a project that keeps evolving and is very much still a work-in-progress.

I’d like it to be displayed somewhere in Rochdale town centre when it’s finished and I’ll be looking for location suggestions when the time to paste it up arrives. Beyond paste-ups, but staying local, I’ve also recently finished pen illustration commissions for Rochdale Sixth Form College and the Town Hall.

Between shops, coffee chains, bricks, and street furniture, there’s something really unique about seeing the art its residents and visitors have made. My paste-ups are designed to add a bit of fun and positivity to the street. If one catches someone’s eye and puts a smile on their face, then that’s a win! Lucy Fieldhouse

What do you hope people get from seeing your artwork out and about? I’ve got quite a few pieces now in Rochdale town centre, including some large painted murals. I personally really enjoy exploring towns and cities through the street art that’s on display.

STARSTRUCK'S JOSH HINDLE

Local singing sensation Josh Hindle made his television debut on Saturday 19th February on ITV's new primetime show Starstruck.

30-year-old Josh, who is well known locally for his Michael Bublé tribute act and also a member of Rochdale Musical Theatre Company, gave an incredible performance as part of Team Bublé in front of celebrity judges Adam Lambert, Sheridan Smith, Jason Manford and Beverley Knight, plus presenter Olly Murs. Style caught up with Josh, to find out more about his Starstruck experience and his future plans... Style: How does it feel to know over 4 million people watched you sing on national television? Josh: Scary, very scary! But amazing at the same time! It was so strange knowing that I already knew what happened but didn’t know how it looked or sounded. So although it was all done and filmed, there was still a really nerve wracking feeling of what the overall look would be and how the public would react. Thankfully, it was amazing and the reaction was incredible and very overwhelming. It took a long time to get through the outpour of love and support from everyone I know – the best feeling ever!

How would you describe the whole experience? Bonkers! The whole show idea was to give ordinary people a taste of what it’s like to be on a stage of that magnitude and we were literally treated like stars. The process was around six months of auditions, call backs, meetings, rehearsals etc and it probably took longer than it should as we still had some covid restrictions in place which made it tricky. From rehearsing with vocal coaches who work with Little Mix and Rita Ora to name a couple, costume departments from Dancing On Ice, Strictly and The Masked Singer, plus hair and make up from massive shows – it was all amazing and I met some incredible people (shout out to Jordan and Jack, my team mates who I am now best mates with!).

It was insane to hang out with Olly Murs and the incredible judges who were all so lovely and offered us brilliant advice we could take forward with us. Where did your love of swing come from? I think it came from singers who are keeping swing music going. I have always been into ‘older’ / ‘retro’ music and always had a different taste in music to my friends. I think it was Robbie Williams who inspired me and made me fall in love with that big band sound with his Royal Albert Hall concert ‘Swing When You’re Winning’. Then of course, I’ve always listened to Michael Bublé and just love the great American song book. I love swing because it's so free and you can express yourself so much within the music and you can really let yourself go and have fun with it.

When did you film Starstruck? The whole audition process began way back in November 2020!! Then the process began from say December 2020 through to May 2021. So it’s a long time ago, hence why we were all so nervous about watching it! It would have been on in 2021 but the pandemic delayed the tv schedule and new programmes were already in some slots meaning Starstruck had to be moved to 2022. It was a painful wait and seemed like an eternity but it was worth the wait for sure! Was it difficult to keep it a secret?! 100%! Obviously my family knew and close friends but I just had to keep thinking ‘it’ll be worth the wait’ and had to keep drip feeding social posts such as ‘big things are coming’ but it was so hard not to tell anyone. And some that did know didn’t know the outcome so it was frustrating for them too! What was the audition process like? I was approached by the casting team after my series of Facebook live singing sessions through the lockdowns and also from when I ran an online music festival for 8,000 people raising £14k in 3 days for my local hospice who I am an ambassador for. The process began with a Zoom audition, then an in person audition, then two or three call backs, a workshop day and then finally into rehearsals and a filming week. All of which were in London so the commuting was quite fun but scary at the same time. I got to meet so many talented people. Remarkable TV were the best and went above and beyond for us! The auditions were simple and to the point, but you had to make sure you smashed it! I got down to the final five from thousands of applications. We were told over 30,000 people applied so this is such a proud accomplishment for me personally!

What has the response been like since you appeared on the show? Incredible. My bookings have trebled and I’m fully booked for 2022 with dates going every week for 2023. I’m so lucky to do this as a job. I’ve gained thousands of new followers on my social media platforms with a short clip of my performance getting 50k views and 2k likes on TikTok! I’ve had comments and messages from all over the world and I didn’t even win or get through... very lucky and humbled! What are you up to over the next few months? At the moment , I’m working on my bookings for the year, planning events and performances around the UK and preparing for a busy April and May where my big show with my band is taking place in Colne. Then I’m off to support Jane McDonald in Rhodes for a week in May which will be incredible!

Where can people see you perform? I’ve got too many gigs to mention and will be updating my live dates section on joshhindle.co.uk and joshasbuble.com so people can keep track of my shows. I also have my big theatre show (one night only!) titled The Kings of Swing at Pendle Hippodrome Theatre in Colne on Saturday 23rd April 2022 at 7.30pm. Tickets: ticketsource.co.uk/phtheatre. I’m also getting the chance to be on stage with Rochdale Musical Theatre Company in their May 2022 production of ‘The Producers’ playing Roger De Bris! Book your tickets - it’s a laugh a minute musical comedy that you don’t want to miss! What are your future plans? I am focusing on working all over the country, having discussions about cruise ship appearances, looking for future tv opportunities and have plans for a new album but all this could take some time. It’s about targets and planning ahead for me at this stage and working hard! Ruth Parkinson

We waited ages to find out if we were in the final three for the show. Dates were getting moved so we had to wait longer but when I got the call and the producer told me I was in the final three, I broke down in tears to my mum on the phone - I was that overwhelmed that my chance to be on a huge tv singing show had come after years of hard work. It really was so overwhelming and I’ll never ever forget that moment.

RECIPES

Rochdale culinary pals Tom McNeeney and Richard Rodriguez have come together to compile some each other’s recipes that compliment each other perfectly. Richard is an instagram sensation with tens of thousands of followers who love his big, bold, flavourful recipes and Tom’s built up a following of his own at his family’s incredibly successful pub The Oxford. The guys will be working together on more and more recipes bringing the best of their worlds together into one powerhouse of page. This dreamy chicken dish is a perfect midweek wonder but has the chops to be a weekend treat as well, it’s perfect with a few glasses of Sauvignon Blanc or if that’s proving hard to get your hands on give it a whirl with a cold Austrian Grüner, easier on the pocket and it’s a lesser known wine that would stand up just as well to the big flavours the boys are kicking about.

Chicken in a garlic mushroom sauce Prep Time 5 minutes - Total Time 30 minutes - Serves 2

Chicken cooked with garlic, mushrooms, red wine and cream, possibly my new favourite dinner served with creamy buttery mash. I’ve used breast in this recipe but you could use thighs or alternatively it would go really nice with pork. Ingredients • 2 skinless and boneless chicken breasts. • 2 tbsps of flour. • ½ tsp of garlic granules. • 2 knobs of butter. • 150 g of mushroom, sliced. • 4 garlic cloves, chopped small. • 100 ml red wine, • 200 ml of chicken stock. • 50 ml of double cream. • 2 sprigs of fresh rosemary, roughly chopped. • 2 tbsps of mushroom ketchup or Worcestershire sauce. • Fresh parsley, roughly chopped. 38 | Rochdale Style

Method 1. Put the flour on a plate, add the garlic granules, season and mix. Take the chicken and slice each breast lengthways through the middle and then coat in the flour. 2. Preheat a non-stick pan over a high heat for a couple of minutes. Add a nice drizzle of oil and the knobs of butter. Fry the chicken for 3 minutes on each side. Then remove from the pan and place to one side. 3. Still, on a high heat add another splash of oil and fry the mushrooms for 3-4 minutes so they get a nice colour on them. 4. Next, turn the heat down to low and add the rosemary and garlic and give that a couple of minutes. Turn the heat to high and add the wine, let that reduce right down, should only take a couple of minutes. Now add the chicken stock and let it reduce slightly for a couple of minutes. 5. Turn the heat down to a medium and return the chicken back to the pan. Cook for another 7-10 minutes or till cooked through. In this time the sauce will reduce and thicken. When the chicken is done remove it from the pan and place it on one side.

Pour in the cream and mushroom ketchup, return the chicken and allow that to reduce for a couple of minutes. Check for seasoning and sprinkle with the parsley and serve with mash and pour yourself a nice glass of wine. Richard recently launched his debut cookbook 'Richard's Family Favourites!' which includes 75 easy recipes to enjoy with family and friends and is now available to buy online at www.familyhomecook.co.uk. Posh Fries Everyone knows when it comes to chips the chippy chip is undefeated, but fries are a different beast, everybody has an opinion, but I’m throwing my hat into the ring now and saying that these beauties are the ones to beat. Ingredients: • 8 decent sized potatoes - King Edwards work best • 2 blocks of blocks dripping - veg oil works too • sea salt • black pepper • garlic granules • dried parsley • parmesan • truffle oil

Method 1. Right, first things first, leave the skins on your potatoes, there’s something about them that just make everything better. Slice them into pretty uniform matchsticks about a centimetre thick. Chuck the lot into some salted water for about an hour to bin off some of the starch. Drain the water and pat the fries dry with some kitchen towel.

2. Meanwhile, in your most sensible pan melt two blocks of beef dripping over a medium heat, if you’ve got a thermometer we’re aiming for about 170ºC. 3. In small batches fry off the fries, for 5/6 minutes, just until they squash if you press firmly on one. Carefully remove from the fat with a slotted spoon and pop them onto some kitchen roll again. You can do this a few hours before you want to eat them and keep in the fridge but anything beyond that they’re going to lose their edge. 4. Once they’re all par cooked you want to whack the dripping up to a higher heat, about 190ºC and in small batches again cook for 3 minutes until the colour changes and they float to the surface. 5. Lift out with a slotted spoon, drain off any excess fat and pop into a mixing bowl. Season generously with some sea salt, black pepper, a few shakes of dried parsley and a good pinch of garlic granules, then using the fin side of a grater grate some parmesan right on top, drizzle with truffle oil and give the lot a toss together. Eat immediately. Can’t go wrong.

Cheesy Braised Leeks I love a leek but sometimes they’re a bit overlooked, I really think this way of cooking them really lets them sing. Really simple but packed full of flavour and if you don’t have leeks it would work incredibly with onions or carrots, even garden peas given this treatment with shine. Ingredients: • 3 leeks • whole bulb of garlic • 20g salted butter • 500ml chicken stock • few sprigs of thyme • heaped teaspoon of wholegrain mustard • black pepper • 50g stilton

Method 1. Ok, the first phase to this is to make some roasted garlic, if you’ve done that before, crack on, if you haven’t you just want to cut off the top cm or so of a bulb of garlic to expose the tops of the cloves, drizzle with olive oil, season and wrap in tinfoil.

Lob the thing in the bottom of the oven for an hour or two. Leave it to cool then from the bottom of the bulb, push out your roasted garlic like a lovely, stinky toothpaste. Wherever possible make joke about there being a leak in the kitchen to anyone in earshot. 2. Lash the oven on 160ºC, get yourself an ovenproof dish and cut your leeks into the same width as it. Layer them in your dish until they’re all in there nice and snug dotting little bits of your butter in and around them. 3. Then get yourself a jug, into the bottom throw 3 cloves of roasted garlic, the leaves from your thyme sprigs and the mustard, mix well then pour in your chicken stock. 4. Season with lots of cracked black pepper and pour over your leeks. Top with a piece of baking paper and push down a little then cover the lot in tin foil and put on a tray in the oven for a good hour and a half. 5. Pull your leeks out of the oven, carefully uncover and crumble over the stilton. Yes. Rochdale Style | 39

ROCHDALE FEEL GOOD FESTIVAL On Saturday 13 August the town will once again be filled with an array of live entertainment and culture as well as great food and drink. Ongoing refurbishment of Rochdale Town Hall and major improvement works around the town hall square will mean a change for this summer’s Rochdale Feel Good Festival. The main stage will move 400 metres, to Hopwood Hall College. Indoor stages in town centre venues will remain the same, with only the main stage re-locating for 2022.

AZIZ IBRAHIM The influential multi-talented guitarist and singer/songwriter has performed with artists including the Stone Roses, Simply Red and Asia as well as co-writing and playing live with Ian Brown, Paul Weller, Rebel MC and Hot Chocolate. With a stellar career spanning over three decades, he’s founded the Asian Blues Collective and toured with Pakistan based rock group ‘Overload.’ Aziz’s solo work includes his acclaimed debut album telling the story of his family’s journey from ‘Lahore To Longsight‘. Rochdale Feel Good Festival is on Saturday 13 August. Find out more at rochdalefeelgoodfestival.co.uk BETWEEN THE VINES Rochdale based husband and wife Kev and Rebecca Whitehead, and brothers Dave and Norman Higginson, also known as Between The Vines, have released a new album. This album continues in the similar Southern Country rock style to their first album from 2018 ‘50 ways to Beautiful’, featuring guest artists Nashville star Clive Gregson, Darren Wharton from Thin Lizzy, country legend Sarah Jory and many more.Check out @BetweenTheVinesMusic on social media for local performances. Both albums are available at: www.between-the-vines.co.uk

Whilst Brit Award winners. The Fratellis will grab the headlines, the beauty of Rochdale Feel Good Festival is often seeing an act you’ve never heard before. While line-ups for the indoor venues around the town centre have yet to be announced as we went to press, here’s three acts that will be performing, to look out for… ABBIE OZARD Hot new Nantwich singer-songwriter Abbie Ozard is supported by BBC Introducing in Manchester and 6 Music. She's already received national airplay on Radio 1 as well as slots at major UK festivals. Her indie pop edge, vocals and infectious hooks have generated a growing fan base. Nominated as one of the UK's top new artists by the Indie Central Music Awards, Abbie's debut EP 'Growing Pains' was released in 2019 and last year she was named by The Times as one of the top new artists in the UK to look out for. FIREWOODISLAND This indie-folk duo is the alias of Bristol-based Norwegian-Welsh multi-instrumentalists and songwriters Stian Vedoy and Abi Eleri. With emotive and dynamic vocal harmonies and a mix of digital and acoustic instruments, their music is atmospheric and euphoric. Supported by BBC Introducing and 6 Music, the super talented pair have received a stack of glowing praise from the national music press and followed up their 2018 album 'Chaos is the State of Heart' with their second album in spring 2020.

ROCHDALE FOLK FESTIVAL Following on from the success of the first Rochdale Folk Festival in 2021, the festival is back bigger and better this year including morris dancing and folk sessions for the first time. Whether you want to listen to some music, spend the day with the kids or join in a session as a musician or singer, there’s something for everyone. The line-up of artists and activities will be announced at the beginning of April, but for now, put the dates in your diary and let’s hope the sun shines as beautifully as it did for last year (although there’s plenty of indoor events if it doesn’t!). Rochdale Folk Festival runs 10th – 12th June 2022. Venues include The Flying Horse, The Medicine Tap, The Baum, Vicolo del Vino, Hoochi Koochi, Touchstones Rochdale and Rochdale Central Library, but there will also be lots of pop-up performances across the town centre over the weekend.

TOP 10 TIPS FOR CLEAN,CLEAR SKIN We all dream of having flawless skin with no imperfections. Everybody seems to be frantically searching for 'that glow' and trying to make huge improvements to their complexion. Patience and consistency are key when it comes to skincare, but where should you start? From finding the best diet, to ensuring a suitable skincare routine, here are my top 10 tips to get you on the perfect skincare journey you've been searching for.

1 - DETERMINE YOUR CORRECT SKIN TYPE

There's no doubt that it is difficult to categorise your skin type into one specific category. It may sometimes feel like it is a little bit of everything! There are 5 main skin types - oily, normal, combination, dry and sensitive. People with oily skin will also accompany concerns such as enlarged or clogged pores and blackheads. People with dry skin will experience opposite symptoms to people with oily skin. It is actually a lack of sebum produced in the skin, resulting in the skin becoming cracked, tight and flaky. Combination skin is when people experience symptoms from two or more skin types. Sensitive skin is found when people experience heightened sensitivity to a certain thing, such as skin care products, foods, weather changes etc. Normal skin is described as skin that doesn't experience any of the above symptoms.

2 - CORRECT DIET AND VITAMIN INTAKE

Finding the correct, balanced diet that suits your lifestyle is crucial to achieving clear skin. Certain processed, fried or sugary foods can contribute to inflammation under the skin, which could cause visible problems. Some foods that will help reduce inflammation are berries, salmon, broccoli, avocado, green tea, dark chocolate, tomatoes and grapes. High quality protein foods such as chicken, turkey, eggs and tofu include two amino acids, which are essential for production of collagen.

3 - WATER INTAKE

Keeping yourself hydrated will make an enormous difference to your skin as it helps to maintain your skins elasticity. You will find you are less likely to suffer from scarring, fine lines and signs of aging with consistent amounts of water. It is also packed full with minerals such as zinc, iron, calcium and magnesium, which all contribute to the natural moisture in your skin, and are high in healing properties. 46 | Rochdale Style

4 - REGULAR FACIALS

Have you ever had a facial before? The results are breath-taking. A few of my favourites are micro needling, dermaplaning, skin peels and hydro dermabrasion. All of these facials can cater to any skin type, and will leave your skin glowing with goodness and completely hydrated. Here at The Retreat, we offer the revolutionary Hydro Facial. This includes a double cleanse with ozone steam, hydro dermabrasion, skin quenching serum oxygen infusion, a cooling rose quarts face mask finished off with our cold, skin tightening hammer treatment to leave you feeling plumped, hydrated and relaxed.

5 - A CONSISTENT HOMECARE ROUTINE

After your life changing facial from the professionals, they will recommend which products you should use at home. Using the correct, recommended products on your skin is a huge game changer. You need to target your concerns, not make them worse! For example, if your moisturiser doesn't cater for your skin type, it could aggravate the skin or possibly make your concern even worse. Make sure to always research the main ingredients in your products before using them on your skin.

6 - USE MAKE-UP FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE

Contrary to belief, makeup isn't all that bad for your skin! It all depends on which kind of products you are using. Similar to your skin care products you need to choose makeup that suits your skin type. For oily skin, try a mattifying primer and light foundation, applied with a beauty blender which helps absorb excess oils. Quench dry skin with a light weight moisturiser before applying a hydrating liquid foundation. This will ensure your skin stays plump and hydrated all day long.

7 - CORRECT MAKE UP REMOVAL

So you've applied your makeup and your skin looks flawless, now the end of the day has come and you need to get it off. You're thinking, "baby wipes will do the job" - NO. Removing your makeup is as important as the application, making sure every trace of your makeup is completely removed, in the correct way, is crucial to keeping your skin in great condition. Use a makeup removing solution makeup removing balm is a great choice. Next, perform your nightly skin care routine.

8 - REGULARLY CHANGE YOUR BEDDING

Come to think about it, we spend a lot of time in our beds! It's no doubt that getting your 8 hours sleep is great for a healthier lifestyle, and skin, however how often do you change your bedding? Our pillow cases can collect all kinds of bacteria, built up oils, dirt and sweat from our daily use. This can then transfer onto our skin in the night and potentially cause inflammation or break outs. To avoid this, make sure you're changing your pillow case regularly.

9 - AVOID TOUCHING YOUR FACE

We use our hands for everything, handling money, opening doors, pushing trolleys, the list is endless. Although we should wash our hands regularly after doing these things, it is still a common habit to touch your face in between. Making a conscious effort to avoid touching your face will ensure less bacteria makes its way to your skin.

10 - EXPLORE WITH SKINCARE

Create a skincare routine you look forward to doing, there is no better feeling that giving yourself a mini facial at the end of the day, making your skin feel a million dollars. Daisy Moore – Therapist & Facialist, The Retreat

SPRING CLEAN YOUR WARDROBE by Style's Fashion Editor Mollie Butterworth

Hey, It’s Mollie here... I am so happy to be continuing my role as Fashion Editor for Rochdale Style Magazine and I am here to share my personal favorite tips and tricks to guarantee your spring wardrobe will be boosting your mood, confidence and style credentials for the season ahead. The mood this season is one of real optimism after spending the last two summers in the UK with not a whole lot of sunshine, it’s no exaggeration to say we are owed one amazing summer. With normality also becoming a reality, we are all tentatively awaiting our summer holidays. The fashion outlook for spring and summer is that there is a time and place to be extra fabulous but still a strong demand for easy and casual looks. FOUR KEY WAYS TO REFRESH YOUR WARDROBE FOR SPRING/SUMMER BOLD COLUMN OF COLOUR Bright, bold and brave colours are here to stay, as we embrace unique prints and eclectic colours more than ever before. We are of course backing anything positive and adventurous that will make you feel good from the inside out. Green is one of the key bold colours for SS22, green is unlike any other colour, it’s fun, rich and pretty! No more waiting for Christmas to pull out your green dresses, this trend is here now! Pink is also another key colour for SS22, all shades of pink are making a feature this spring/summer but more so, candy and fuschia pink; it’s feminine, girly and romantic!

HYPER FEMININE This trend is perfect for all the women who want to feel more feminine and sophisticated, regardless of body traits there is something for everyone in this trend. From feminine fabrics and pretty pink hues, it's super easy to jump onto the trend right now. If you are a little apprehensive to jump onto this trend, firstly dip your toe into the water with trying some new accessories. INVEST IN JEANS Even though we are heading into spring/ summer, we all know how unpredictable the British summer weather can be. Having a staple pair of jeans is a must to team with all your tee’s and blouses. I would recommend investing in a pair of mid-wash and light blue jeans, this can either be skinny or mom jeans just whichever you feel more comfortable in. This is also the perfect opportunity to combine the bold colour trend, by investing in a block colour pair of jeans i.e a bright green pair of mom jeans would be completely on trend this spring/summer. BOHEMIAN It should come as no surprise that in the age of escapism we’re living in, bohemian is becoming increasingly popular again. This year's desire for clothes and accessories that feel inspired from the most exotic holiday locations featuring detailing, rich colours and tactile fabrics. I recommend trying a floral maxi dress made of lightweight fabric, perfect for holidays or to layer day to day with a denim jacket and your white trainers. Alternatively If you are not a dress person, you can also easily follow this trend with a blouse or skirt. MY PERSONAL TOP TIPS This is the perfect time of year for a spring clear out and wardrobe re-fresh! This way you can clearly see what you need or would like for the season ahead. Lastly, shop small, shop happy. See you again soon, Mollie x Instagram @mollieb_ Rochdale Style | 55

Spring is on its way...

Finally the days are lasting longer, and there are glimmers of green slowly but surely creeping into our gardens. Most of us have been in hibernation mode since Christmas, enduring the combination of an abstinent January and the dark, depressing and downright dastardly weather so it’s safe to say that a little positive stimulation would be nice. It could be argued that spring is the best time to make good on your ‘New Year’s Resolution’, whether that’s resolving to travel more to experience a new culture (and better weather, yes, we’re British, we’re obsessed with the weather), taking up a new sport, or enrolling on a college course. In optimistic anticipation of the coming sunshine, ‘Style’ has a few suggestions for some seasonal pick-me-ups for when you emerge, butterfly like, into the coming spring.

GET ORGANISED Sometimes there simply aren’t enough hours in the day to do all that we need to do. Obviously, we have to go to work, and get some sleep at some point, but apart from that there should be a little bit of time left over to do fun stuff too, right? It’s a question of prioritising, switching off the television, getting off your phone (Facebook is an absolute time black hole) and consciously resolving to get the boring stuff done so you can then get round to the fun stuff. Download an app or go old school and invest in a diary, either will help you see where you’re wasting time and help you remedy this. And as if by magic, you’ll have time to do all the fun stuff I’m going to suggest for you now.

WRITE A BUCKET LIST With all the extra time you’ve got on your hands from your newfound organisational skills, you can now do that thing you’ve been meaning to do for goodness knows how long... write a bucket list. This is your chance to get down in black and white all the things you’d love to do, before you shuffle off this mortal coil, and writing it down might be just the motivation you need to actually start ticking those dreams off. As mine involves things like afternoon tea at the Ritz and visiting Iguazu Falls in South America, it may take me a few years to actually implement, but I’ll get there.

BOOST YOUR FITNESS After visiting the gym twice in January, does anybody actually return? There are lots of other, more exciting and unorthodox ways to get fit nowadays. Take up salsa or ballroom dancing, join a road cycling group, rope in a friend to try pole fitness with, look up your local martial arts centre or get online and follow a Pilates or yoga tutorial. You’ll have fun while blasting away those winter cobwebs, de-stress and have an *official* hobby as well as getting fit – win win.

GO ON A UK SAFARI Obviously you may struggle to see giraffes and lions roaming about the English countryside, but there is plenty of other exciting wildlife on our doorstep that you might never have realised was here. Another feature on my bucket list is to see dolphins in the wild, and believe it or not, there are lots of places in the UK to do it, including Cardigan Bay in Wales, the Moray Firth in Scotland and several spots on the south coast of England in Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. There’s also a resident pod of killer whales which live off the west coast of Scotland. Or if cetaceans aren’t your thing, you can spot Britain’s native squirrel species, the red squirrel, at nature trails in Formby, Anglesey and at several reserves in Northumberland. You can watch seal pups being born at Donna Nook in Lincolnshire from September to December, or observe puffins in the Farne Islands, Yorkshire and numerous sites in Scotland. Not to mention that you can take part in bat spotting events across the UK, or head up to the Lakes for a bit of bird watching, with Grizedale Forest in particular being a lovely spot to see species such as red kites and tawny owls. Grizedale is also home to Britain’s only indigenous herd of red deer, and if you’re lucky you might also spy the resident roe deer too.

VOLUNTEER There are dozens of local charities that are desperate for volunteers to help out. Some allow you to volunteer on an ad-hoc basis, as and when suits you, or you can commit to a set time every week. Animal charities such as RSPCA Rochdale or Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary are often in need of volunteers, or perhaps you could ‘Share a Skill’, like teaching an instrument at a local homeless centre. If you're green-fingered you could volunteer for the award winning Rochdale In Bloom. Charities and organisations such as Springhill Hospice, Action Together, Rochdale Mind, Rochdale Foodbank, Rochdale Musical Theatre Company and Petrus are regularly in need of volunteers to step in to a variety of roles. Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, give back and feel more positive about yourself.

Happy Spring! Rachel Clarke Rochdale Style | 59

DALE FAN TO CLIMB MOUNT KILIMANJARO FOR 'MARTIN’S MOUNTAIN' CHARITY CHALLENGE Rochdale AFC fan Stuart Wildman will climb Mount Kilimanjaro in June, in aid of 'Martin’s Mountain' charity challenge.

Rochdale supporter Stuart, who is a consultant nurse in Major Trauma at Salford Royal, first met Martin 14 days after his injury. He said: “I met Martin in Salford Royal where I was looking after him, and we formed a really good relationship. "I saw him at his absolute lowest when he was trying to come to terms with his injury, but from that I also saw his determination and his ability to want to get better, and we have stayed in contact ever since. "He has never really forgotten what we did for him but, likewise, we’ve never forgotten what Martin does for us. He’s a great advocate for us and what we try to do, and for the NHS. "He came to me and told me that he’d had an idea for a challenge and asked if would I get involved, and straight away I said that I wanted to be a part of it without even hearing what it was!

Stuart is supporting Martin Hibbert, who is taking on this amazing challenge. Martin survived the Manchester Arena bomb explosion in 2017, but after sustaining 22 shrapnel wounds, he became paralysed from the waist down. What happened that night has made Martin determined to turn an act of terror into a force for good, and he is taking on this challenge to raise £1,000,000 for the Spinal Injuries Association. Martin is leading the challenge and over seven days will face tough terrain, whilst dealing with the cold, altitude and sleeping in the wilderness, all while negotiating the boulder fields and the long climbs on shingle using a special adapted trike which is operated by using only his arms.

"The reason he has chosen Kilimanjaro is that he wants to raise awareness and highlight how difficult it can be living with a spinal injury but that it shouldn’t be. What he has to deal with on a daily basis and the obstacles that he has to overcome is like climbing a mountain, and that’s the significance of why he’s climbing Kilimanjaro. He wants to raise the profile of spinal injury patients, but what can also be achieved by someone with a spinal injury. "I’ve never climbed a mountain before. I’m really looking forward to it now and I’m excited to get out there. It’ll be tough for all of us individually and and as a team, but we’ll all come together and support each other." Martin will be taking a Paralympic torch to the summit of Kilimanjaro. Stuart will also be taking a Dale flag with him! Read more and donate here: martinsmountain.org.uk

RARE & WONDERFUL WILDLIFE AT HOPWOOD HALL ZOO Spring has sprung with the arrival of new animals at Hopwood Hall College and University Centre.

Instead, the friendly troupe of wallabies is also expanding as a number of the females have given birth.

The college – which homes rare and wonderful wildlife from around the world – is now seeing its brood get even bigger.

The tiny joeys are now spending a period of time in their mothers’ pouches before they can stand alone.

One of the new faces is the fascinating baby Bali myna that joins a number of endangered birds that are cared for at the Middleton Campus.

They’re still very young, but some of their furry faces can already been seen poking out and enjoying the idyllic surroundings. The Bali myna and wallabies are just some of the hundreds of different species of animals that you can find at Hopwood. The enclosure features so much unusual wildlife, including potoroos, meerkats and pink flamingos. These exotic creatures are homed at the college so they can be cared for by learners studying Animal Management. People of all ages come to study there, including school leavers and adults doing Higher Education. Hopwood also opens its door to the public for its popular Animal Academy. This is an exciting week-long adventure in which school pupils aged 13 to 16-year-olds who dream of working with animals have the opportunity to come to the campus and care for all the unique wildlife.

She’s been hand-raised on a diet that sees her eating a specially made smoothie every two hours from 6am. This type of bird is so uncommon that her brother – also born at Hopwood Hall – is now part of an international breeding programme at Dudley Zoo. The Bali myna, however, isn’t the only new addition to Hopwood Hall.

ANDY'S MAN CLUB OPENS SECOND VENUE IN ROCHDALE Due to the incredible success of mental health Charity, Andy’s Man Club, at Mayfield in Rochdale, the Crown Oil Arena has now opened its doors as a second venue to accommodate soaring numbers of men talking about their mental health. Andy’s Man Club currently runs in over 60 locations across the UK, facilitating talking groups for men who have either been through a storm, are currently going through a storm, or have a storm brewing in life. All groups run on Mondays 7pm – 9pm, every Monday excluding bank holidays. "It’s great news that we’re now able to offer this support for men and their mental wellbeing, all talking about how they feel and getting support from each other, building on the fantastic work done up at Rochdale Mayfield," said Ryan Bradley, Community Director of Rochdale AFC Community Trust. "This partnership will make a huge difference to the mental wellbeing of men in the borough, and it’s great to use the Crown Oil Arena as a place to talk, listen, and change lives." The weekly sessions start at 7pm in Our Spot Community Hub at the Crown Oil Arena. The entrance directly opposite the 5-a-side Kick Pitch in the car park. Give it a go; it could change your life, too! Rochdale Style | 63

ROCHDALE'S SHOW OF SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE

Members of Rochdale’s Ukrainian community joined councillors at the Lviv bridge in the town centre on 1st March in solidarity and support for Ukraine, following the ongoing invasion of the country by Russia. The borough has lengthy links to Ukraine, and since 1992 has been twinned with the city of Lviv, the largest city in western Ukraine. On the tenth anniversary of the twinning, a bridge over the river Roch was named after the city. This historic bridge in front of Number One Riverside was lit in yellow and blue for the vigil. Several members of the borough’s Ukrainian community listened as Rochdale Borough Council leader Neil Emmott spoke in support of Ukraine and its people. He thanked the crowd for their support and said we must never take for granted the freedoms we are fortunate to possess: "My hope is that the action being taken across the world to thwart Russia’s and now Belarus’s unprovoked invasion and the incredible resolve of Ukrainian people will drive home the message that this unacceptable invasion must be halted and Putin’s army must go home for good." "As we have done in the past when other atrocities have been committed, we remind the world that the whole borough of Rochdale stands shoulder to shoulder with you."

64 | Rochdale Style

The evening concluded with the singing of a national song of Ukraine. Mayor of Rochdale Councillor Aasim Rashid recently wrote to his counterpart in Lviv, receiving a reply from the city's Bureau of Foreign Cooperation saying they 'really appreciated the support and readiness to help us in such hard times'. Lviv officials said they were providing people who had fled their own cities in the east of the country with 'places to stay and vital supplies'. The Ukrainian community in Rochdale is well established, with many residents' parents and grandparents coming to the UK as refugees after World War Two. Many donation points have been set up throughout the borough - these are constantly being updated as they can quickly reach capacity so please check social media for further details. Donations can also be made to the Help Ukraine Emergency Appeal via gofundme.com, who are working with accredited Ukrainian charities to provide medicines, food and critical services to those in need.
