5 mins with ... erika heynatz Lucy Stephens chats to model, actress and musical theatre maven, Erika Heynatz about her upcoming role in cult classic musical, The Rocky Horror Show. Tell me about your role as Magenta with The Rocky Horror Show? Magenta is basically a domestic servant to the lead Frank N Furter. On top of keeping the castle clean I just wait on Frank hand and foot and cater to his every need. I completely idolise him, he’s my master, he’s my god. I’m pushy and rude and laugh at other people’s misery. Everything with Legally Blonde was so pink and shiny and full of heart, and Rocky Horror has some of that, but there is a very different tone. There’s a chance to really let go of inhibitions and to celebrate liberations of any kind. Was musical theatre something you always enjoyed as a kid, was it something that you where heavily involved in growing up? At school it took a little while for me to find the confidence to put my hand up. I tended to go for parts where I could sing in a group. And that remains for me to be the biggest pleasure. It wasn’t until I was offered a part in It Takes Two when I thought, ‘now is my

chance to pursue what makes me really happy’. You were recently nominated for a Helpman Award (an accolade presented by Live Performance Australia) for your role as Brooke Wyndham in Legally Blonde. What was that like? It was incredible – just incredible! If anything, I thought I’d be given the biggest rookie of the year. For me, I was just so thrilled that I got the part! Do you have any health or beauty tricks you swear by to get you through your day? Preparation is key – I prepare my food the night before. I make iced tea, iced coffee to take. I take protein shakes, boiled eggs, salads, vegetables. Doing my job, you need to constantly fuel. If you don’t have food at hand, you eat lollies and then you have energy peaks and everyone ends up hating each other! (laughs). I also exercise seven days a week, whether it’s weights, spin class or surfing. I’m not a very good surfer, but I’m very, very keen. www.rockyhorror.com.au

interior initiative Tess Brinums sat down with Sublime Architectural Interiors’ Principal Designer, Kim Duffin, to get his forecast on the hottest trends and tips for 2014. As an industry leader in interior architecture, what do you forecast as the strongest trends for kitchens and renovations for 2014? I think there will be a stronger connection between adjoining spaces i.e., living, dining and kitchen. Many designs we have coming up for 2014 comprise removing walls and relocating windows to create more connection in these living spaces and this extends to the blurring between indoor/outdoor spaces. What strongest trends in interiors for 2013 will carry over into the New Year? Furniture pieces. We are now not only designing and manufacturing kitchens and vanities but storage solutions throughout the home that are used in unison. We want to work, play, cook and socialise in combination so designing spaces using furniture pieces such as booth seating, entertainment zones and so on brings the whole concept together, helps the space flow and create harmony in our day-to-day life. What advice would you give to someone about to commence a new build or renovation? Planning is the key and functionality first. Use larger tiles – reduced lines will make the space appear bigger and less cluttered. Grains – if you are using a timber grain, think about which way to run, horizontal or vertical. In a small room with limited light and height, running the grain horizontally can make the space look small. Suspended furniture pieces – this is a great way to give a space flow and the light and airy feeling that we all love. What is your favourite finish for a kitchen/bathroom and why? Textured surfaces. Texture brings things alive and can make you feel things when touched. So sometimes just mixing textures is enough to create interest in a space without the need to go over the top with colour. Style Publisher Tracy Johnston recounts her luxury weekend away at the Grand Buree – a stunning holiday home in Byron Bay. Recently a group of friends and I were lucky enough to experience a five-star getaway at the Garden Burees, in one of my favourite places to chill, Byron Bay. On entering the Grand Buree through impressive antique timber doors, the tranquil stand-alone villa took my breath away. With three spacious and beautifully presented suites, a private plunge pool and spa, hideaway courtyards and a fullyequipped kitchen complete with ice-maker and coffee machine, we could have happily enjoyed a rejuvenating stay without stepping foot outside the Balinese-inspired home. Authentic Balinese and Asian finishes coupled with the tropical entertaining area and soothing water features, really do take you to a happy place… Mai Tai anyone? Once we managed to pry ourselves away from our little slice of paradise, it was only a hop, skip and a jump to the iconic Byron Bay Brewery. We unwound in their relaxed beer garden and sampled award-winning beers
on tap. As the nights heat up, local and international bands and DJ’s transform the dance floor into a lively nightlife hotspot. On the first Sunday of every month, you can head to the Byron Bay Markets and browse the fashion, jewellery and crafts while listening to local musicians. It’s a relaxed vibe as you feast on fabulous street food like paella, crepes, vegetarian curries and delicious sugared donuts. Make sure you go on an empty stomach! Our weekend at The Grand Burees was a perfect way to catch up with good friends prior to Christmas. We all agreed it is one of the loveliest and unique places we’ve all stayed at and highly recommend it for groups of friends, an adult family or an intimate celebration – think 40th or small wedding. Tell me about your show, The Naked Magicians? It’s an adult-rated comedy magic show that leaves little to the imagination. If you’re going to a colourist that’s never said no to you, you’re not being advised on the best colour palette for you or your hair. Good quality design is one of the most important aspects of residential property today, particularly in affluent areas where properties have multi-million dollar price tags. Long periods of standing in one position can be common in certain occupations such as hairdressing or machinery work and it can often lead to discomfort in the legs and feet. Symptoms such as a vague aching sensation, itchy legs or burning and sweating feet can be due to poor clearance of venous blood out of the legs. People affected with venous disease that causes venous incompetence are particularly prone to these symptoms if they are standing still and not moving around. Walking helps clear the blood out of the lower limbs because contraction of the calf muscles compresses the deep veins and this is the mechanism by which venous blood gets pumped up and out of the legs. It’s known as the “calf muscle pump”. If you are experiencing uncomfortable symptoms, you might be suffering from venous incompetence. This can often occur without the presence of visible varicose veins. A duplex ultrasound of the saphenous veins and deep veins in your legs is the appropriate investigation for this problem.

The Leg Vein Doctor makes treating varicose veins a ‘walk in, walk out’ proced ure
new no-stripping solution For those of you not familiar with varicose veins, here’s the low down. Vein stripping is a treatment used to combat varicose vein disease involving an invasive surgical process. Surgical stripping is unfortunately plagued by very high rates of varicose vein regrowth after surgery. The reason for this is not due to poor surgical technique but rather a problem referred to as “neovascularisation”- where the varicose veins simply grow back. There also tends to be a burden involved for patients having their veins stripped, as they require hospitalisation because surgery is performed under a general anaesthetic. The risk of damage to nerves and the lymphatic system is also higher following surgical stripping in comparison to Endovenous Laser Therapy and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy. In July 2013, the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) released groundbreaking clinical guidelines for the diagnosis and management of varicose veins. The NICE guidelines emphasise that surgical stripping of varicose veins has become superseded by Endovenous Laser Therapy and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy. In layman’s terms, Endovenous Laser Therapy uses heated lasers to seal larger veins shut, making it a www.stylemagazines.com.au
‘walk in-walk out’ procedure lasting about an hour with minimal pain and after-treatment. Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy (UGS) is ideal for complex varicose veins and those that have recurred after surgery. The source of these veins is often hidden deep under the skin but can be seen on an ultrasound, allowing the needle to be accurately targeted for maximum results. Endovenous Lasers should not be confused with Surface Lasers, which are beamed directly onto the skin to treat surface veins. Surface Lasers are inappropriate in the treatment of varicose veins. While the jargon can sometimes be a little confusing, what is obvious is that vein stripping is no longer a necessary form of treatment when more effective, less painful options are available.
