As we wrap up 2024 with a glass of bubbles, we want to take a moment to thank each and every one of you – our team, our clients, readers, supporters, friends, and family. You’ve made this year one to remember, and we couldn’t have done it without you. Seriously, we appreciate you all more than words can say.
Now, looking ahead to 2025… Let’s just say we’ve got some big things in store. Like, really big.
To kick things off, we’d love for you to weigh in on all things Style in our reader survey. Help us make sure we’re delivering exactly what you want to see – whether it’s in here, online, or across our socials. It’ll only take a minute, and as a token of our appreciation, you could win a dream retreat to Gwinganna – the perfect way to kickstart your 2025. Talk about “new year, new me,” right?
This month’s issue is packed with some serious talent, starting with the one and only, Sophia Klemenz-Ghanem. If you haven’t heard of her yet, well, you will soon. She’s the design world’s ‘it girl’, taking the city by storm with her flawless eye for design. But she’s not just talented – she’s also cool, kind, and refreshingly down-to-earth. We were lucky enough to peek inside her latest project, Hideki – a sophisticated and sleek spot in Burnett Lane, co-owned by Sophia’s husband Wasim Ghanem and business partner, Joe Chagoury. Think Tokyo underground fused with an intimate, moody atmosphere – we loved the whole vibe. We were fortunate enough to experience the venue, sample the menu, and meet the incredible team before their official opening. Trust me, this place is going to be the it spot, so I recommend you make a booking.
As we head into the holidays, I hope this issue gives you a little escape from the holiday madness and helps you feel inspired for the year ahead. Take time to unwind, spend time with your loved ones, and recharge. We’ll be here when you’re ready to dive into 2025 with us.
Wishing you a safe, peaceful, and joyful break. I look forward to reconnecting in the new year!

Making a drastic career change in your 40s can be daunting, but for Talitha Cummins, TV journalist-turned-jeweller, it was a return to her roots.
WORDS NATALIE MCGOWAN
Two years ago, Talitha made the bold decision to step away from a 20-year career in media, swapping the spotlight of journalism for the creative freedom of jewellery design. “It was a fascinating career,” she reflects, “but as a woman in the space, I felt I wanted a career where I had more control over my own destiny.”
Talitha’s media career spanned everything from court cases to Royal visits, spending mornings on Weekend Sunrise and news reading on Triple M. However, it’s not the celebrity encounters or high-profile moments that linger in her mind. “It’s the people who have experienced trauma or difficult times and been resilient,” she says. One story that stands out is the Brisbane floods. “The way the city came together to help each other out…it was the best of humanity.”
Talitha’s love for jewellery started long before her career in journalism. In high school, she worked at Wallace Bishop, where her fascination with diamonds first took hold. Years later, after stepping away from the newsroom, she decided to rekindle this passion. Months of online study followed by training in London introduced her to lab-grown diamonds –an experience that became the cornerstone of her next chapter.
With the help of her uncle Craig, a veteran with over 50 years of
experience in the diamond industry, and her cousin Kara, Talitha cofounded The Cut Jewellery. Embracing lab-grown diamonds, The Cut offers an ethical and equally dazzling alternative to mined stones. “Under the microscope, a lab-grown diamond and a mined diamond look the same because they are genetically nearly identical,” she explains. “They’re also graded by GIA, just like mined diamonds, but they come at a lower cost and without any ethical concerns.”
When asked why she chose to focus on lab-grown diamonds, Talitha points to the shifting priorities of today’s buyers. “Research shows younger generations care less about flaunting how much money they’ve spent on something…Many people tell us they simply don’t want to have a $50,000 ring on their fingers and could think of better use of their money.”
Specialising in bespoke pieces for engagements and weddings, Talitha’s design philosophy is simple: “I truly only make things that I like myself,” she says. As the brand enters its second year, Talitha’s mission remains consistent: to design stunning jewellery that resonates with the modern woman. In Talitha’s words: “I’m selling joy.”
Who is Sophia Klemenz-Ghanem? A mother, interior designer, business owner, wife, globe-trotter, and selfconfessed fashion fanatic using her unique vision to craft beautiful spaces around Brisbane.
For most kids, living in a hotel is the stuff of dreams, but for Sophia, it was simply her reality. Born into a hotelier family, child to a Swiss father and Malaysian mother, she spent her childhood constantly moving between cities and hotels across the globe – Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Seoul, Yogyakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Jakarta, and Cairo. It’s no surprise then, when she says, “I can make anywhere feel like home.”
Indeed, she can.
With a remarkable ability to transform spaces and infuse warmth and character into a room, Sophia’s diverse upbringing has not only shaped her adaptable personality, but also given her a global perspective that continues to influence her work today.
Sophia credits her unconventional childhood and her parent’s influence for guiding her toward a career in interior design. Reflecting on her father, Sophia says, “He was a humble and meticulous man with very high standards,” and it’s clear that his values were instilled in her from an early age. “My father always told us that the life we were living was not real life. He came from a very different upbringing in Zurich and wanted us to understand that for most people, reality looked very different.” This exposure to the world, paired with her father’s disciplined approach, fostered an eye for detail and a passion for quality that has become the cornerstone of Sophia’s work.
“I’m a little bit of everything – a sum of all the places I’ve lived”
– SOPHIA KLEMENZ-GHANEM
After gaining experience working for TV personalities in the design industry in Toronto and London, followed by an internship taking her back to her hotelier roots, she found herself in Brisbane working for a respected furniture company, which eventually led her to open her own business, Klemenza. A resident of the James St precinct, the retail shop and full-service interior design agency is an expression of Sophia’s essence – bold yet refined, creative, and a myriad of cultural influences.
Klemenza was born at a pivotal moment in Sophia’s life. Back in 2018, as a firsttime mum, she sought a career that aligned with her new priorities while fulfilling a lifelong dream: creating a store reminiscent of the boutiques she had fallen in love with during her childhood in Southeast Asia. She also credits her mother’s interior design and furniture store in Cairo as a major source of inspiration, giving her early insights into running a business.
“I love sourcing and I believe that shopping should be a full sensory experience – from the visual to the olfactory, and of course the customer service,” she explains.
“People remember how they felt and I think that’s really important.”
With a rich portfolio of projects under her belt, it’s Sophia’s latest undertaking, Hideki, that she’s most proud of. A Japanese-inspired yakitori bar tucked away in the CBD’s Burnett Lane, Hideki is the brainchild of Ghanem Group’s Wasim Ghanem – a well-known Brisbane restaurateur and Sophia’s husband. The project holds special meaning for several reasons. Firstly, the trust that Sophia felt was instilled in her throughout the process; secondly, her involvement from
“I feel sensitive to my surroundings and find design and interiors play a big part in the mood we experience every day”
– SOPHIA KLEMENZ-GHANEM
start to finish, from helping find the location to choosing the paint colour; and finally, the significance of Japan to the couple, where Wasim proposed to her.
The result is a labour of love – a space that has been curated with the utmost care and precision. The restaurant is undeniably atmospheric and moody – a stark contrast to its urban surroundings, inviting guests to come in and escape from reality for a while. Hidden away down one the city’s laneways, finding it is part of the fun.
For the interiors, “it was a combination of customisation and vintage sourcing,” Sophia says. “I’m most excited about the vintage artwork we sourced in our recent trip to Japan.”
A standout feature of Hideki is how seamlessly light and texture are woven together, creating a balanced atmosphere that enhances the ambiance. Sophia’s expertise in understanding lighting is evident, particularly in the striking lightbox positioned above the bar and reflective finishes layered over a monochromatic palette, which work together to craft an intimate and immersive atmosphere.
“It’s like entering another world,” she says of the space.
With Hideki now officially open, the couple are gearing up to unveil its sibling location on James St, also named Hideki. The new venture will have a lighter, alfresco feel, serving as a bright counterpart to Burnett Lane’s moody charm. Set to open later this month, if there’s one thing we know about Sophia, it’s that everything she touches turns to gold.
Brisbane’s dining scene has continued to flourish over the years, offering food lovers an ever-expanding array of venues to explore. Yet, the city’s all-new yakitori bar is bringing something entirely fresh to the table – an immersive dining experience unlike anything Brisbane has seen before.
Venture down the CBD’s Burnett Lane and you’ll stumble upon Hideki. Set against the hipster backdrop of the alleyway, it seems a stark contradiction to its surroundings, enticing curious passersby to discover what lies beyond the dramatic black sliding door.
“We love the sense of discovery that comes with being tucked away in this iconic laneway… it’s like uncovering a hidden gem, which is exactly how we want diners to feel when they step inside,” shares Co-Owner Joe Chagoury. Together with business partner Wasim Ghanem and Wasim’s wife, Sophia Klemenz-Ghanem of Klemenza, who led the interior design, the team set out to bring the art of yakitori to Brisbane, honouring Japanese culture where dining is as much about community as it is about flavour.
“It’s our belief that a dining experience should ignite all five senses, and we hope that everyone leaves Hideki with an enlightened sense of connection to the food, the people they’re with, and the culture that inspired it all,” Joe says.
With a menu crafted to encourage sharing, much like the traditional izakaya experience, expect the aforementioned charcoal-grilled skewers, alongside a selection of small plates. The menu is built on the finest local and international ingredients – from ethically-farmed poultry and sustainably-sourced seafood to specialty items imported from Japan, each dish highlights quality and craftsmanship.
Leading the kitchen is Head Chef Jason, who has spent over a decade mastering the intricacies of Japanese cuisine, honing his skills in renowned restaurants like Takashiya, Honto, and Etsu. With a deep respect for tradition and a flair for innovation, Jason’s passion for creating dishes that blend authenticity with interesting, bold flavour profiles results in standout dining experiences.
“For us, yakitori isn’t just food, it’s theatre”
At Hideki, yakitori takes centre stage –a feature of Japanese cuisine that is often underrepresented outside of Japan. Grilled over charcoal to create a beautiful smoked flavour, each skewer represents the artform of yakitori – simple yet perfectly balanced. This, combined with the refined sophistication of the venue, will transport you straight to the heart of Japan.
– JOE CHAGOURY
“There’s something uniquely captivating about the simplicity and precision of grilling over charcoal,” Joe explains. “It felt like the perfect way to introduce Brisbane to a dining style that is approachable yet elevated.”
The drinks menu has been thoughtfully curated to enhance the dining experience, focusing on Japanese whiskey and sake. Joe cites the whiskey collection as a highlight, featuring rare labels like Hibiki, Yamazaki, and Nikka, which will delight whiskey enthusiasts.
As for the cocktail lovers, the drinks infuse iconic Japanese flavours such as yuzu, wasabi, and matcha, incorporating a creative edge to the beverage list.
As Hideki makes its mark on Burnett Lane, the team is preparing to launch Hideki 2.0 on James St in mid-January. This second location will offer a more vibrant, urban atmosphere with a menu tailored to a faster-paced crowd. While the signature yakitori experience remains, diners can look forward to modern sushi and coastal-inspired dishes that celebrate Brisbane’s proximity to the sea.
Get to know the Creative Director and Buyer of Camargue, Harriet Sutherland.
INTERVIEW NATALIE MCGOWAN
Hi Harriet! Tell me about how you got your start at Camargue Hi Natalie, thanks for asking. Having worked in the fashion industry for a few years and having done a small stint in Paris, I was brought on board to steer Camargue’s new journey and run the boutique. My role has evolved over the years from being on the shop floor and hearing what the clients want to wear, to working with our director on buying and curating our collections, as well as overseeing the creative direction of the brand. How would you describe the shopping experience at Camargue It’s a place where everyone is welcome, it is so important to us that anyone who comes into Camargue feels comfortable. The team are amazing at gauging a client’s needs and they all genuinely love working one-on-one with people to make them feel confident and sophisticated. Are there any brands you’re particularly excited about stocking We’re launching Vivienne Westwood this season. It’s an incredible brand which speaks to so many generations, which in a way, Camargue has in common. As the Creative Director and Buyer, what does a typical day in your life look like Each day is different, as I split my week between the boutique and our head office. Emails are always first point of call, then checking online sales from the night prior – it’s always exciting to see where in the world people are shopping with us. I’m currently planning our next season buy with Camargue’s director Siobhan, which might include late night zoom calls with Europe. Later in the week, you’ll find me in the shop, where I love catching up with our

clients and seeing them interacting with the collections. What is your process for curating the amazing pieces at Camargue? I know you go to Paris on buying trips a few times a year, what are those trips like We try to focus on curating pieces that the client will love wearing and keep in their wardrobe for a long time. Paris is busy! We are in back-to-back appointments, eating our baguettes on the go, but it is an inspiring time and I love connecting with brands and friends in the industry. How would you describe the Camargue customer and how does the Brisbane market influence how you curate the store There is no one typical Camargue customer, but that is what makes the boutique so interesting. If I had to describe the person who shops with us, I would say they are true disciples of fashion, unafraid to try something new and always looking for that next coveted piece to add to their wardrobes. How much do trends influence your buying for Camargue We try not to get too caught up in trends as it limits the lifetime of a garment. However, we might find when going through showrooms there is a thread that joins ideas together from brand to brand, which helps bring an element of harmony to our collection. What would you say to someone who might feel intimidated by fashion Don’t be, fashion should be fun, not stressful! There is nothing more rewarding than helping someone explore and expand on their personal sense of style. And if you’re curious, come by our James St boutique or contact us online and the team will be glad to look after you.

GENERAL DENTISTRY WHITENING
A visit to KAILO, the Medispa at The Calile Hotel, is always a treat, but their latest collaboration with the luxury Swiss skincare brand La Prairie takes indulgence to the next level.
WORDS NATALIE MCGOWAN
When I first heard that I was to experience KAILO’s La Prairie 90-minute Caviar Indulgence Immersion facial, to be honest, my initial reaction was “WTF is a caviar facial?” – quickly followed by excitement to be the first at KAILO to experience it. Offered at only a select few spas across Australia, KAILO is the only spa in Queensland to offer the exclusive La Prairie facials. Upon arrival, the lovely Annette welcomed me into a treatment room and gave me a rundown on what to expect from the facial – I’ll spare you the details, but it sounded incredibly luxe. She also painted a vivid picture of the brand’s history, indulging me with fascinating stories of Clinique La Prairie Founder, Dr Paul Niehans, that involved some legendary names, including Vincent Van Gogh and even a pope. Driven by his belief that science could unlock the secrets to eternal youth, Dr. Niehans established Clinique La Prairie.
Over the years, La Prairie has perfected the science of caviar, crafting an array of caviar-derived active ingredients that work to firm, lift, re-sculpt, and volumise the skin. The caviar used in La Prairie’s luxurious formulas is sustainably sourced from a local Swiss family who raise sturgeon at the base of the Swiss Alps (did anyone else just discover their new dream job?). This approach ensures the freshest, highest-quality caviar while adhering to sustainability standards set
by the World Sturgeon Conservation Society and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council. As Annette explained, caviar is a remarkable natural resource rich in essential proteins, peptides, lipids, vitamins, and minerals that energise and nourish our cells, stimulating metabolic activity for a truly revitalised complexion.
After lying down on the heated treatment bed, Annette instructed me to take a deep breath, close my eyes, and imagine the snow-capped Swiss mountains. From that moment on, I drifted in and out of sleep for the entire 90 minutes. The facial was a full sensory experience: the sensations were soothing and relaxing, the scents were truly decadent, and even the subtle sounds of La Prairie’s products clinking on the glass tray they were being hosted on felt like real-life ASMR.
The treatment incorporated various sculpting techniques expertly designed to stimulate muscle fibres and connective tissue, promoting a noticeable lift and enhanced firmness. This, combined with the restorative properties of caviar, made the experience nothing short of divine and left my skin feeling sculpted, revitalised, and utterly radiant. There’s no doubt I’ll be back again soon.

So, I know you’ve been touring Europe, you’ve just performed at the F1 in Singapore, and you’re about to start your regional Australian tour. What have been some standout moments for you this year We played this show in Crete, which was so fun. We love Greek food. We love wine. It was just one of the best trips I’ve ever had. Also seeing Kylie Minogue live at the F1 was unreal. That blew my mind. I’m dying to see her live. She was so good! I was a big fan before, I’m an even bigger fan now. Wow. Well, speaking of being fans, I’ve been listening since your first EP. I’d love to know, how do you feel the band and your sound has evolved over the years since that first EP, compared to where you are now Thank you. Yeah, it’s funny because we’ve been practicing our set this last week and you really feel some of those changes when you’re putting them side by side. For me, I’ve heard a lot more music now than what I had when I was younger. And as an artist, I I just pick up stuff as I go. A song like Love Signs has been influenced by more R&B, and I wasn’t even listening to R&B when I was making that first EP. What, I was 17? favourite song to perform live It always changes, but one that’s always in the conversation is Heartless from Love Signs. I just love playing that song. I, like, go somewhere when I’m playing that song. I just, like, chill the fuck out! And you’re playing a DJ set in Brisbane this New Year’s Eve on Oasis Cruising, before going to La La Land. What are you most looking forward to and what can people expect Yeah, that’s going to be wild. Like, DJing on a boat is pretty fun, it’s pretty hard not for that to just be my favourite part. We haven’t played Brisbane in a while and people will have the option to hang with us all night which is pretty crazy. I like that people will be going from the boat to the next venue, and I love the sound of that. Is there any chance you’re going to play any new music We’ll see how many margaritas I’ve had. That will dictate it. Speaking of new music, is there anything in the pipeline for you guys Yep. So we have a new song coming very soon that I’m really excited about. It’s all done. I’ve been working on this new record for a good while, and I feel like I’ve finally got it lined up, so I know exactly the theme that I’m bringing to this new music. And this next song is a kind of perfect representation of the record.
Sophia Cameron’s bold leap from interior decorator to full-time artist.
WORDS TEAGAN WITHEROW
Sophia Cameron’s style is as bold as it is unpredictable. “Energetic, colourful, layered, and a little random,” she says, always with an element of surprise – you never know what will emerge.
For over a decade, Sophia ran her interior decorating business from her home, with a showroom set up right at the front. But just over two years ago, she felt it was time for a change.
After years of helping clients bring colour and character to their spaces, she realised it was time to focus on her own vision. “I’d painted sporadically for years,” she recalls, but eventually, she asked herself “for the next ten years, would I rather be carrying fabric swatches or paintbrushes and canvases?”
Transitioning to painting full-time was a leap, but one that aligned perfectly with her life.
her to switch between pieces and avoid overworking any single one. “I love variety,” she says, “and having multiple pieces on the go lets me pivot if one isn’t ready for a new idea.”
As well as juggling multiple paintings at once, Sophia also embraces an array of mediums – acrylics, ink, collage, oil sticks, pastels – refusing to limit herself to just one. This openness allows her to continually explore new techniques, with her next adventure taking her to Ghana, where she plans to learn about textiles through beading, batik, and basket weaving.
“I’m instinctively motivated to create colourful pieces which are uplifting & joyful company”
– SOPHIA CAMERON
Sophia doesn’t take on commissions; instead, she offers “option painting,” a relaxed approach where clients can request a size and mention any colours they’re not fond of, and she’ll create a piece with them in mind. “If they like it, great; if not, no pressure.”
Each of Sophia’s paintings tells a story – sometimes it’s intentional, but other times, she’ll only realise partway through that her work reflects something deeper – be it family, relationships, or societal themes.
Working on multiple paintings at once keeps Sophia’s process fresh, allowing
Sophia draws inspiration from everywhere; her travels across the globe to the everyday scenes around her Paddington neighbourhood, her surroundings constantly fuelling her art.
Her creativity, though, is rooted in her upbringing on a property in central Queensland. Growing up without many distractions pushed Sophia to be inventive. She said she would create her own games, and even cut up fabric scraps to make clothes. Those early days of inventiveness still shape her art and design style today.
Sophia hopes that people feel the same energy and joy she experiences when they step into her creative spaces or view her paintings. “Energised, joyful, positive, uplifted – I want them to feel like they’re in good company,” she says, “that’s what I hope my paintings are for people.”

WORDS LISA CAMERON
‘Amaroo’, meaning A Beautiful Place, is more than just a name – it’s a promise.
Stepping into Amaroo Bangalow, I was immediately enveloped by a sense of calm. Architect Shaun Lockyer’s stunning design welcomed us into a space where luxury and family connection harmoniously coexist. As we drove in, the property’s vastness and manicured beauty left me in awe – and my kids couldn’t contain their excitement, yelling that this was the coolest place they’d ever seen. My children, aged seven, four, and three, wasted no time kicking off their shoes and starting a game of tiggy, with our Labby, Rocky, quickly joining in. Watching them play and laugh in the expansive, green open space, with the fresh country air around us, was a perfect start to our stay and a moment of true family fulfilment that lingered throughout our visit.
Nestled in Byron Bay’s picturesque hinterland, Amaroo Bangalow beautifully blends nature and luxury. With three self-contained cabins, a spacious loft, and a communal area, it comfortably accommodates up to eight adults and six children – making it ideal for larger families who seek both togetherness and space to retreat. This arrangement was perfect for our group, which included my family, my in-laws, and my aunt.
Amaroo’s secret? It was created with love. Initially, owner Cathy and her husband lived in the
loft and hosted their children and grandchildren in glamping tents. Over time, this vision evolved into eco-friendly cabins, offering other families the chance to experience the magic of the place. The couple also partnered with bush regeneration and koala specialists, planting over 15,000 native and rainforest plants, creating a koala corridor, and transforming the property into a sustainable haven that’s 70% off-grid. It wasn’t just about connecting with my family – it was about connecting with nature in a way I hadn’t anticipated.
Our days were filled with exploration, from visiting the happy chickens and cows on the property to unwinding with board games, swimming, and enjoying delicious meals – think wood-fired pizzas and farm-fresh breakfasts. Nights were spent under a blanket of stars, with laughter ringing out around the fire pit.
Amaroo – meaning “a beautiful place to stay” – is more than just a name; it’s a promise. In a world that moves at lightning speed, this magical place invites you to pause, immerse yourself in nature’s splendour, and rediscover the joy of shared family moments. It’s an experience that can only be truly understood by living it, and one I hope you get to experience for yourself. As for us, we know we’ll be back.

RECIPE LOUIS TIKARAM
INGREDIENTS
12x half shell Hervey Bay scallops
1x cup coriander leaves
200g dried vermicelli noodle
10g oyster sauce
XO SAUCE INGREDIENTS
250g large red chilies halved & deseeded
40g peeled ginger
60g peeled garlic
100g dried scallop (conpoy)
50g dried shrimp
250ml Shaoxing cooking wine
300ml canola oil
15g black beans
50g diced smoked speck
PROCEDURE TO SERVE
1. Soak the conpoy and dried shrimp separate in shaoxing for 24 hours.
2. Steam the scallops in a small bowl for 15 minutes.
3. Let the scallops cool before shredding them into fine strands and set aside. Pound the shrimp in a mortar and pestle until they are broken down slightly.
4. Deseed the red chilies and rough chop along with the garlic and ginger.
5. Dice the smoked speck to a similar size as the vegetables.
6. Gently heat the oil in a heavy based pot over a low heat then add all ingredients together.
7. Cook for 1 hour on a low simmer stirring occasionally. The XO should be a beautiful deep red colour and very aromatic.
1. Soak the dried vermicelli noodles for 30 minutes in cold water.
2. Drain well and add 400 grams of your finished XO sauce along with the oyster sauce and mix well.
3. Lay the scallops out on a small tray and top with the XO noodle mix – be sure you have a good amount of the XO ingredients in there.
4. Steam for 4 to 5 minutes until the noodles are soft and the scallop is just cooked and serve immediately onto a serving plate.
5. Garnish with coriander leaves.
