For something a little different, Dominique Elissa gives us the lowdown on seed cycling—curious? Flip to page 38. Plus, I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Jalen Ngonda on page 44, the incredible talent bringing his soulful sound to Australia for the first time ever. He’ll be performing live at the Princess Theatre on January 14. You’ll find me there, front and centre!
There’s plenty more inside to inspire, excite, and set you up for a fabulous year ahead. Now, let’s make this one of our best years yet!

MODA MOMENTS
BARELY
The secret to beating the summer heat? Less is more! Plunging necklines, backless silhouettes, and thigh-high slits paired with breezy fabrics is the key to surviving in style.
SO SHADY
No summer look is complete without the right pair of shades and finding the right kind is serious business. Right now, we’re loving dark, Anna Wintour-inspired sunnies that exude effortless mystery and chic sophistication.
PENDANT POWER
Shock horror: another ‘90s revival! This time, it’s swinging from the necks of fashionistas. Cord pendant necklaces are dominating the jewellery scene, riding high on the wave of the sculptural jewellery trend of the moment.
WEDGE YOUR BETS
Heels that are high and comfortable? Say less. Wedges are trending heavily right now with all the hottest brands opting in. A throwback to the early aughts, 2025’s wedges are undeniably more sleek and unique.
NEW WAVE
AS WE STEP INTO THE NEW YEAR, IT’S THE PERFECT TIME TO RESET, REFLECT, AND EMBRACE FRESH PERSPECTIVE S
After the challenges of the past few years, it’s time to embrace a fresh perspective. Life often feels chaotic as we juggle work, family, friendships, and everything in between, but there’s always an opportunity to pause, reflect, and focus on what truly matters.
The New Year is the perfect moment to press reset –a chance to realign with your goals, refresh your mindset, and embrace the endless possibilities ahead. It’s not about perfection, but growth and progress as we carve out space to become the best version of ourselves.
This issue is all about new beginnings – letting go of the past and looking forward with optimism. We’ve spoken with inspiring individuals who’ve shared their words of wisdom and guiding mantras for the year ahead. Their stories remind us of the power of intention and the beauty of embracing life’s twists and turns with positivity and purpose.
That’s why we chose the beautiful Nauvoo McPhee to be our January cover girl. With her vibrant energy and refreshing spirit, she embodies this month’s theme perfectly.

WHEN DID YOU START MODELLING
I was scouted at 16 through a school picture my agent found. Now, modelling is my full-time job. I’m just really grateful that this is my life and that I’ve been able to step forward in faith through each chapter this career has walked me through.
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR 2025
My main focus is to serve as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I’ve been called to the Philippines, and I’m so excited to dedicate all my might, mind, and focus to this experience.
YEAR OF TENACITY WITH KATIE PAGE
Leader, businesswoman, trailblazer, and CEO of Harvey Norman, Katie Page has many feathers in her cap. Following a dynamic year that saw the launch of two new stores in Brisbane and the UK, we caught up with her to discuss her past and her future.
“Turn up. You have to be there on the ground, whether it is in any of the eight countries that Harvey Norman operates in, whether it is for your family, or whether it is for your health”
Your leadership has significantly elevated opportunities for women across sports and business. What inspires your passion for creating these opportunities I went to primary school in St George and then Brisbane State High School. I am a proud graduate of the Queensland public school system. The opportunities I have had in life all stem from my education. For me, sport is an integral part of a well-rounded education, and you never stop learning. These are the opportunities I want to create for others – particularly for girls and women who have long been underrepresented across the spectrum of endeavour. It is about creating the pathway, the opportunity. What people choose to do with that opportunity is what continually inspires me. What practices or habits help you stay grounded while managing the demands of leading a business empire Making sure I prioritise spending time with my family – time at home with Gerry, our children, and grandchildren. Being with them recharges me and reminds me what is important. Reflecting on your career journey, what have been the most pivotal lessons you’ve learned The lessons are the most important part of your
career journey. There are too many to name, but two stand out: 1) Family is the most important; 2) Keep going. What have been some of the biggest challenges in your career, and how have they shaped your growth as a leader The challenges are always there, and your experience equips you to manage them. Early on in the pandemic was probably the biggest challenge I have ever faced. I was running a company in eight countries – the health and welfare of our staff and customers in each of those countries were under threat. No one felt safe. I really felt the weight of the responsibility to protect them. That was significant. What advice would you offer to young women aspiring to succeed in maledominated industries Work hard. Stay curious and never lose sight of the fact that your contribution is equal, if not greater. Workplaces have come a long way. How do you define success Depends on the day. What’s in the pipeline for you in 2025 In 2024, Harvey Norman opened a new store in Macgregor, Brisbane, and a new store in the United Kingdom near Birmingham. Those were highlights for 2024. I’ll let you know the standouts for 2025 next Christmas.
YEAR OF RADIANCE WITH MAXWELL H. ARBITER
High Jeweller and Coloured Diamond Specialist, Maxwell H. Arbiter, of family-owned business Argyle Jewellers, is carving out a reputation for himself in the world of fine jewellery. So, what does 2025 hold for him? It’s all about putting in the work.
What first drew you to the world of jewellery design I graduated with degrees in advanced mathematics and quickly realised I was far more interested in talking and sales than working in the corporate world. Luckily, my stepfather, who had started the business many years ago, was looking for staff at the time. Deciding to give jewellery a short go while exploring other career options led to me staying indefinitely. I grew to become a partner in the business and built a career in designing high jewellery. It was serendipitous, to say the least, but I couldn’t be more satisfied with my choice of career if I tried. How did you develop your passion for coloured diamonds specifically Since I started in jewellery, I’ve idolised the work of legends like Harry Winston and Laurence Graff – icons in the world of diamonds, gemstones, and coloured diamonds. I decided that if I was going to pursue high jewellery as a career, it would be by following in the footsteps of giants like them. What is your creative process when designing jewellery Conceptualise, draw, design, mould, set, finish, and finally… but most importantly, the grand reveal. This business is about emotion, not just jewellery. It’s almost like show business!
“Take care of your responsibilities, follow through with your promises, and most importantly, get up and get the work done, day in, day out”
Where do you find inspiration for your designs This might sound clichéd, but I often say the designs come to me in dreams. We live and breathe jewellery, so we’re always thinking about new pieces, diamonds, or coloured stones. The proverbial painting has always been there – I’m just here to hang it on the wall. What do you think will be the biggest engagement ring trend of 2025 It’s hard to beat the momentum of yellow gold solitaires at the moment. Everyone wants a big diamond on a fine gold band—which I love, as it’s such a timeless and elegant expression of love. My hope for the engagement ring trend of 2025 is that people don’t just follow what’s ‘in’ but choose something they truly love. Jewellery is an expression of love between people, and that’s what matters most. What’s in the pipeline for you in 2025 My main goal for 2025 is to continue building my name in Queensland’s high jewellery market. With the support of my mother, stepfather, and incredible team, I hope to grow into a household name for high jewellery, coloured diamonds, and, most importantly, being a trusted business known for quality and dedication to our clients.
YEAR OF REFINEMENT WITH JAYE EDWARDS
11 years since opening his first salon, Founder and Owner of EdwardsAndCo, Jaye Edwards, dishes on building his hair empire and what the future holds for the renowned Australian salons.
“2025 is about cutting the fat, letting go of the people who don’t serve you. You’re only as strong as those you surround yourself with”
What inspired you to start EdwardsAndCo I moved to Sydney from rural NSW when I was 15. I never really had an interest in the beauty industry, but I somehow ended up getting an apprenticeship at the first hair salon I walked into. When I opened the first salon, I kind of did it out of, not desperation, but default. I had bought into a salon with no contracts and lost all my money, so I had to scramble to figure out what to do. I got five credit cards, and I opened the first EdwardsAndCo in 2013. When I opened it, I wanted a creative space where my friends and I could create beautiful hair. I never really had the dream of opening multiple locations! Looking back at your early career, what advice would you give your younger self when you were just starting out in the hair industry People procrastinate on an idea and then get the opinions of 10 different people and they all clash. So, I think go and do it, and if you fuck it up, you fuck it up. You just try again! What’s one haircare tip
everyone should know If your hairbrush sounds like it’s breaking your hair, it probably is. Time to invest in a new one. What inspires you professionally I get so much inspiration from travel. When I can’t travel is when I’m least happy. I’m lucky enough to be able to travel the world with my job and teach seminars for my educational platform EdwardsAndCo Education. What are your favourite hairdressing products and tools to work with I love using O&M CLEAN.liquids for glossy, sheer pigment when creating my signature “futureproof colour” looks. What are you forecasting to be the biggest hair trend of 2025 Lately, I’ve noticed that clients are returning to their natural hair colour and coming in for a professional service to enhance their natural colour and texture which I absolutely love. It’s all about future-proofing your hair and making the most out of salon visits. What’s in the pipeline for EdwardsAndCo in 2025 Focusing on what we already have, refining, and enhancing it.
YEAR OF VITALITY WITH JEN AND NICK RAVENSWOOD
Going beyond conventional treatments, Co-Founders of RAYS Wellness, Jen and Nick Ravenswood, are reinventing what health and wellness means through alternative healthcare solutions.
“Live life by design – having clarity in knowing what you don’t want just as much as knowing what you do”
What inspired you to start RAYS Wellness With a professional background as pharmacists, we have spent the last nine years owning and operating traditional pharmacies, which provided us with invaluable insight into the state of healthcare today. Over the years, we observed a common trend: rather than becoming healthier overall, many people were getting less well, particularly when relying solely on conventional medicine. Mainstream healthcare often felt more reactionary than proactive or preventative, and by the time patients engaged with the healthcare system, they were already quite unwell. In a world of information overload, we aim to simplify the foundations of what it means to be well and to explore the frontiers of modern medicine in a way that brings clarity to the complex. Is there a particular ethos that guides your approach to holistic wellness At the heart of our approach to holistic wellness lies a deeply rooted belief that health transcends the mere absence of illness – it is a dynamic, balanced state encompassing mental, physical, and social aspects. Our philosophy emphasises the importance of doing what feels right for you, embracing an integrative approach that thoughtfully blends the proven science of conventional medicine with the transformative potential of alternative therapies. Can you describe the RAYS Wellness space design and the customer experience At RAYS, we offer professional guidance on your health and wellbeing, personalised just for you. Our design intention
was to bring the outside in, creating warm, welcoming sanctuaries that offer a reimagined, patient-centric approach to holistic healthcare. While RAYS offers its digital prescription delivery services nationwide through our online portal and mobile app, those in the area can visit our retail spaces in person – just a stone’s throw from James Street in Brisbane, or our newly opened RAYS Wellness in South Melbourne. What are the most significant benefits of integrating alternative therapies into traditional health practices It can significantly reduce the need for conventional medication, especially when interventions are applied early for chronic conditions. The body is a complex and interconnected system, where cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive and nervous systems all rely on each other, and this interconnectedness extends from the body to the environment around us to lifestyle factors like diet, sleep, exercise, and social connections. A holistic approach encourages people to actively engage in all aspects of their personal health journey, empowering them to make informed choices and avoid dependency purely on conventional medicines. What’s in the pipeline for RAYS Wellness in 2025 We plan to further expand our holistic offerings by integrating alternative therapies more seamlessly with conventional healthcare practices. This will allow us to provide even more personalised and effective solutions for our patients, addressing the complexities of their health comprehensively.
YEAR OF TAILORING WITH SAM ABI
Quality craftsmanship is at the forefront of high-end menswear brand Urbbana, led by Founder Sam Abi.
What first sparked your love of fashion Growing up with three stylish older brothers and being exposed to 90s trends and music has influenced my love for fashion. Fine art and architecture are part of our household culture. Plus, it’s in our family blood, as my grandfather was a textile vendor for 30 years! What inspires your design choices and overall vision for Urbbana My designs revolve around the idea of work and play. I believe that personal presentation, image, and branding should always be a priority, regardless of the industry you work in. I draw inspiration from nature, art, architecture, and, of course, the places I visit and the different cultures I encounter. Every collection features a mix of serious business designs alongside playful and party pieces. The colours I choose for my collection are inspired by forests, gardens, animals, birds, and insects. If nature shows us that certain colour combinations work together, then they should work on fabric. Tell me about your recent experience mentoring students as part of the TAFE QLD Protégé Fashion Show. What was that experience like for you The experience was not only smooth and enjoyable, but it also provided me with a wonderful opportunity to guide
“The biggest risk you can take is not taking any risk at all”
and mentor the students. Assisting them in nurturing their knowledge and skills was incredibly rewarding. As an established fashion designer, I believe it is essential to pass on the insights and experiences I have gained over the years. I feel a profound sense of responsibility to inspire and equip the next generation of designers with the tools they need to succeed in this ever-evolving industry. Sharing my journey, challenges, and triumphs with emerging Queensland talents is both satisfying and fulfilling. It reinforces the importance of community within the fashion world, where we can uplift one another and foster creativity. What do you predict will be the biggest menswear trends for 2025 This year’s trends for menswear favour vibrant accent colours like green, red, orange, and burgundy for the brave, along with basic colours like brown and black. Lightweight blazers will continue to be a must-have item this year. What’s in the pipeline for Urbbana in 2025 In early 2025, we will see the arrival of the first women’s shirt collection in seven years! This time, it will become a permanent part of the range. The two main seasonal ranges planned for 2025 are even more sophisticated.
YEAR OF CREATION WITH LISA SINCLAIR-ROBINSON
Founder of celestial-inspired jewellery brand Constellate, Lisa Sinclair-Robinson, has been looking to the stars for inspiration. Now in their fifth year, Constellate continues to captivate with their delicate designs.
What inspired you to start Constellate Our sons Jack and Thomas. We used to read this one story over and over – it’s called The Fisherman and His Wife. It’s about gifting the moon and the stars, and of course, they wanted to know how that was even possible. We used to use the stars to explain life’s more tricky questions to them – like where they came from and where we go when we die. It was a gentle way of explaining life to curious young minds. I also wanted to leave them a legacy – their own story to tell their children and generations to come. Who or what have been your biggest influences in your jewellery design career I’m a huge street style watcher, but the biggest one for me, without question, is travel. When you can step out of your every day, I think your mind becomes 100% free to really see things. How would you describe your design philosophy Whatever I create must have something behind it. Much like someone who paints, all the pieces I have made capture a mood, a person, a moment. Everything tells a story, and each piece has its own name. Like Asteria, the very first piece that I designed, came from the tale we read the boys. Or Hera, which, for me, is about the forever bond between a parent and child. What achievement are you most proud of in your career with Constellate Over the last few years, I’ve been really fortunate to meet many of the people who own my pieces, sharing some very personal stories about what drew them to a particular design and what wearing it means to them. It’s quite a privilege to be let into someone’s life that way. What are you
“While I breathe, I hope”
forecasting to be the biggest jewellery trend of 2025 To be honest, I’m not really a trend person. I think while you’re always aware of what’s going on around you, it’s important to stay with what resonates with you personally, otherwise, you lose something of yourself along the way to creating a piece. Then, it becomes less about what you see and more about something entirely commercial. What’s in the pipeline for Constellate in 2025 I have a couple of pieces underway now that are a result of last year’s trip to Europe. I’m also excited to work on the next collaboration with emerging designer Lucy Banney for R O B E, which is a new category for me. We just released the first offering: a tee shirt called The Notes To Self Tee for the summer.
LISA SINCLAIR
YEAR OF INDULGENCE WITH XANNY CHRISTOPHERSEN
With a heritage as rich as their desserts, Priestley’s Gourmet Delights’ CEO Xanny Christophersen is elevating the business while keeping it innovative and true to its family origins.
Tell us the story behind Priestley’s Gourmet Delights Priestley’s Gourmet Delights was founded by my aunt, Marilyn Jones, in 1993. She started the business selling cakes to cafes out of the back of a station wagon on the Sunshine Coast. Over the years, the business has transformed from a small cake manufacturer serving our home state of Queensland to a national dessert distributor. Our range has more than 130 delicious products – many were originally created by a French pastry chef, and we still use those recipes today. We understand that you are a secondgeneration member of the Priestley’s business. What keeps you passionate about it Being part of a family legacy is incredibly motivating. I’m really proud of how we’ve grown into a dynamic and forward-thinking business with meticulous manufacturing processes at our new facility at Acacia Ridge. It doesn’t feel like a typical manufacturing site. We have solar panels, electric car chargers, a parent’s room, and a prayer room, because I think it’s the right thing to do and I love the people that I work with. Staff retention is important to us as a family. All of our creations are still hand-finished with love, just like Marilyn did all those years ago. It’s every foodie’s dream job! What is the Priestley’s Gourmet Delights philosophy We focus on quality, innovation, and simply creating happiness. We are so passionate about what we do. Each day, we have a team of taste testers sample every piece we bake. Nothing leaves our kitchen that isn’t the very best in taste and presentation. What does a day in your life look like My day often begins with reviewing reports and financial updates to stay informed about the company’s performance and industry trends. Mornings are usually packed with
“My father always used to say to me when I was a child, ‘Effort equals reward.’
Now that I’m older it rings so true”
meetings with the executive team to align on priorities, address challenges, and track progress toward our goals. Given the diversity of our operations, my schedule varies significantly. I also host a podcast called Bite Size where we interview guests about the trends, challenges, and opportunities in the food industry. I also have a young daughter, so like so many other CEOs, I balance a packed work schedule with a busy parent schedule! How do you stay creative in your industry I’m a foodie at heart, and I love eating at the newest foodie haunts. We also explore global dessert trends and often draw inspiration from our surroundings – you’d be surprised how much comes from fashion and jewellery. Keeping the curiosity alive and never settling for the ordinary are my keys to staying innovative. What’s in the pipeline for Priestley’s Gourmet Delights 2025 Lots of exciting things! We are working on expanding our vegan and gluten-free ranges, which we are known for. We’re also introducing seasonal flavours and refining our independent retail products – you’ll find them in IGAs around Queensland, Victoria, and WA.
YEAR OF EXPANSION WITH DANIEL MCKENNARIEY
Nobody does a sanga quite like DannyBoys. And this year, Founder and CEO Daniel McKennariey is set to bring his irresistibly delicious sandwiches to more locations around Brisbane, with an exciting year of expansions on the horizon.
What was your background before starting DannyBoys? I read that you used to be a private chef – tell me about that I worked in restaurants up and down the Queensland coast as a chef for a year – Noosa, Sunshine Beach, Hope Island, Brisbane, Broadbeach, etc. I then received an offer to work as a chef on a small motor yacht travelling up to Far North Queensland for three months. That kicked off a new adventure, which led me to work as a private chef in residences and on superyachts across the USA, France, Italy, Ukraine, and many other places. What inspired you to start DannyBoys I noticed a gap in the market 14 years ago. Burgers and sushi were emerging, but no one was doing sandwiches... at least not well. After spending nearly five years in the USA, I realised sandwich shops were everywhere, and they were amazing. Fast forward to 2024, and it feels like everyone’s finally catching on – “Oh, sandwiches might be a good idea.” Why sandwiches Everyone loves a good sandwich. What makes a DannyBoys sandwich stand out from the rest At DannyBoys, we make as much as possible in-house and from scratch. All soups and sauces, from our ranch dressing to mayonnaise, are homemade and crafted in-store. Reflecting on the journey so far, what’s been the most rewarding part of building your brand The joy of creating something great. I’m a creative person at heart, and seeing people happy through food is so fulfilling. We’re also working hard to give more back to the local community through our charity, Doughnation. With stores in Kelvin Grove, North Lakes, and Brendale, and new locations opening in Stafford and Boondall, how do you approach expansion while staying true to your brand identity We’re building a new small production facility in January 2025. This will allow us to expand
“Always give 100% to what you’re doing... unless you’re giving blood”
our offerings, ensure consistency, and meet demand as more DannyBoys stores come online. What’s your approach to sourcing ingredients, and how does that reflect your commitment to quality We prioritise sourcing local ingredients and supporting small businesses wherever possible. I regularly engage with local farmers and meat suppliers to maintain quality and foster community relationships. What’s in the pipeline for DannyBoys in 2025 We’re launching a new production facility, a franchise location in Boondall, and a new retail store in Stafford. Additionally, we’re looking for two more franchisees for South Brisbane locations – only rockstars need apply. Head to dannyboys.com.au/franchise to apply for franchising and catering.dannysboys.com.au for all your catering needs.
YEAR OF MOTIVATION WITH NADIA BOURBOULAS
With 20 years of experience teaching at respectable higher learning institutions including QUT and AIM, Nadia Bourboulas is empowering people to build their confidence in communication.
“Try my best every day and everything will fall into place”
What motivated you to pursue a career in speech and communications I really have my parents to thank for my career in speech and communications. As a child, I was quite shy and awkward. I had buck teeth and a lisp. My parents invested heavily in me by sending me to a private speech and drama teacher when I was eight and then to the orthodontist soon after for braces, headgear, and a plate. I saw my private teacher for an hour weekly for 15 years until I graduated as a private speech and drama teacher myself through Trinity College of London. Years later, here I am! What does a day in your life look like A brisk morning walk for me. My husband, daughter, and I subscribe to the Mediterranean diet, so we enjoy a healthy breakfast together before we all head off in our separate directions. I quickly review the diary for the day before doing 10 minutes of reading, drafting lesson plans, rehearsing speeches, practicing the delivery of my upcoming teaching programs, checking emails, and booking in any private appointments. At the end of the day, we make sure to sit down as a family at the table to dine together and reflect on our day. What are some key skills that you think are important for effective communication Being open, honest, and transparent with all those with whom you interact makes for a more meaningful and memorable communication
every time. It’s important to listen actively to others so that you can really respond rather than react to what they’re sharing. Always maintain eye contact. Make them feel important and valued – no matter how long or short the conversation. What do you find the most rewarding aspect of working in your role Having a student walk away with a new skill set is extremely pleasing to me. Hearing from them that they nailed that speech, landed that speaking gig, connected with someone, secured that role, or got that promotion makes me feel like I’ve done my job. It’s immensely satisfying to know that I played a small part in their journey. As we shift more towards digital communication, what are your thoughts on the future of face-to-face communication Faceto-face communication has become increasingly important because it’s real and requires us to use our voice and body in a considered fashion. While the fundamentals of communication remain mostly the same, hosting virtual and in-person meetings requires two very different skill sets. I strongly encourage my students to embrace both. What’s in the pipeline for you in 2025 Moving into our new home which my husband has designed and built, returning to Greece with our daughter in the summer, and teaching more adults how to be the best versions of themselves through their speech and communication.
YEAR OF RESOLUTION WITH JULANN TIERNAN
Drawing from both expertise and personal experience, Julann Tiernan from Tiernan Family Law believes that separation and divorce can be a step towards happiness, working to achieve kinder, more collaborative outcomes that protect the family unit.
“To continue to bring empathy, clarity and positive change to families experiencing separation and divorce”
What inspired you to pursue family law as your specialty I have always had a strong interest in justice, access to justice, and the law. I started my legal career in the QLD Police Service as a police officer for nine years before completing my law degree in 2005. Following my own separation and divorce and experiencing the trauma and grief that can come with that, I came back to the law and became a family lawyer. My own experience has driven me to seek better outcomes for my clients, helping them avoid unnecessary conflict, focus on their children, and adopt a more collaborative approach during separation. How do you stay motivated and inspired in a field that can be emotionally demanding It’s so important as a family lawyer to look after yourself first as there is lot of vicarious trauma that comes from dealing in this field. I try to ensure that I exercise daily and look after my health. Also, our approach of being resolution focused and always striving for a kinder approach to help families in need feeds into my motivation to find better ways to do family law. What is the most rewarding aspect of working in your field Seeing our clients reach the conclusion of their matter and experiencing the sense of relief that lifts from their shoulders. Even after separation
and divorce, families remain families when children are involved, and we strive to support that ongoing connection. Is there a particular philosophy that guides your approach to family law We have bucked the traditional billing trend in the legal profession by being entirely fixed fee for our clients. I don’t have an hourly rate or the traditional sixminute interval breakdown. Rather, we scope for each particular stage of work, and everything is included so our clients never have to stress that they can’t call us due to bill shock. What makes Tiernan Family Law unique Our philosophy of kindness and empathy extends to ourselves, our clients, the wider profession, and other lawyers. This approach can make the process empowering for our clients. Additionally, our fixed-fee model is almost unique—very few family law firms in Queensland operate entirely on a fixed-fee basis. What’s in the pipeline for Tiernan Family Law in 2025 We’re excited about our gorgeous new office on Manning Street, South Brisbane, which features original artworks by my husband, Stephen Tiernan, a Brisbane Portrait Prize finalist and category winner. I’m also expanding my role as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner and mediator, offering services to help families find out-of-court solutions.

What inspired you to begin Mynt Lab Mynt Lab was born from a personal struggle with chronic insomnia. Through my experience, I discovered that regulating body temperature is key to achieving restful sleep. I wanted to create a solution that combined luxury, comfort, and sustainability, so others could experience the rejuvenating power of quality sleep. What makes Mynt Lab unique Our fabric is truly one-of-a-kind. The mint-infused fibres provide a natural cooling effect, eucalyptus wicks away moisture, and pine adds softness and durability. This combination results in a sustainable, luxurious material that’s hypoallergenic, antibacterial, and designed for optimal sleep. How would you describe the Mynt Lab sleep experience It’s like slipping into a perfectly cool, silky cocoon. Our bedding naturally regulates body temperature, ensuring you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer, waking up refreshed every morning. Why is regulating body temperature important for sleep Your core body temperature needs to drop to initiate and maintain sleep. Cooling bedding enhances this process by lowering

skin temperature, increasing melatonin (the sleep hormone), and reducing cortisol (the stress hormone). This creates deeper, more restful sleep cycles. How does the brand practice sustainability Sustainability is central to everything we do. We use responsibly sourced materials, a closed-loop production system that recycles 99% of water and solvents, and eco-friendly packaging. Our processes are certified by OEKO-TEX®, FSC, and PETAApproved Vegan, ensuring ethical and environmentally friendly practices. What’s in the pipeline for Mynt Lab in 2025 We’re just getting started! In 2024, we’ve been on pre-order as we worked through the long and rewarding process of bringing our innovative fabric to life. In 2025, we’re excited to finally be in stock and to give more people the opportunity to experience our revolutionary bedding. This is just the beginning of what we hope will be a transformative journey for sleep and sustainability. Now, as we step into 2025, I can see how every challenge and delay was necessary to bring us to this moment, stronger and more prepared.
YEAR OF PURPOSE WITH YASMEEN CATHY
Every space has a story to tell – a concept that Interior Designer Yasmeen Cathy of Yasmeen Cathy Interiors understands deeply. As she steps into the new year, she remains dedicated to bringing those stories to life with designs that are both purposeful and timeless.
When did you first discover your love of interior design Design has always been in my blood. Growing up in a family of storytellers who created for others, I witnessed the magic of crafting something uniquely tailored to enhance people’s lives. From riding in the back of my grandfather’s Ute through building sites to watching my parents transform properties, like a neglected house once home to 12 Alaskan Malamutes into a cozy family cottage. I learned the art of design as a language for storytelling. What’s one sentence to describe your interior design style Creating timeless interiors with soul that enhances lifestyle and reflects the homeowners’ unique identity. What has been the most interesting item you’ve sourced for a client I’m passionate about sourcing pieces with stories. One standout was a peacock lamp that perfectly captured a client’s love for both French and Vietnamese aesthetics. Another memorable project involved finding bookshelves crafted from reclaimed timber from decommissioned boats – timeless pieces that brought a sense of history into a stunning Queenslander home. What can clients expect when they begin working with you Our process begins with a free phone consultation to understand you and your property. Whether preparing a home for sale or creating a space to call your own, we tailor our approach to meet your needs. From this initial conversation, we source pieces to bring to an onsite meeting, where we refine our understanding, assess the space, and develop a design brief perfectly aligned with your vision. What advice would you give to someone looking to refresh their space but unsure of where to start When refreshing your space, I follow a three-step process to elevate its aesthetic while supporting your lifestyle. Firstly, start with meaningful pieces and incorporate heirlooms or items tied to special memories at the heart of your design. Secondly,
“‘Plan and a purpose, hope and a future.’ These words from my dad have been my guiding light for years”
assess how you live and streamline your space to align with your daily routines and lifestyle needs. Lastly, curate with care and ensure you thoughtfully select additional pieces that complement your needs and aesthetic, creating a cohesive, timeless, and inviting space. What’s in the pipeline for you in 2025 We’re excited to expand our community in 2025, partnering with suppliers, real estate agents, and buyers’ agents to support clients through major life transitions. Upcoming projects include styling everything from charming Queenslanders and Mid-century homes to a bayside Hamptons-inspired property and a Sunshine Coast country cabin surrounded by farm animals and wildlife.
YEAR OF GROWTH WITH ALMIRA ARMSTRONG
Few appreciate the power of fragrance like Almira Armstrong, the Founder and Creative Director of LUMIRA. Find out about her inspirations, her creative approach, and what to anticipate from the brand in 2025.
“Embrace the journey. Staying present, connected to our purpose, and open to growth is the mindset I want to carry into 2025”
How and when was the idea to start a fragrance business born The idea for LUMIRA was born in 2013, but its roots go back much further. Fragrance has always been a deep passion of mine, tied to my love of travel and the way scents can transport us to specific places and moments. After years of working in creative industries and travelling extensively, I realised there was an opportunity to create a luxury fragrance house that honoured these inspirations while championing sustainability. It felt like the perfect way to merge my personal and professional passions. Fragrance has this incredible ability to transform how you feel, and I wanted LUMIRA to embody that sense of boldness and strength. Can you describe the process of bringing a fragrance to life, from concept to finished product It all starts with a story or inspiration, often tied to a place, memory, or emotion. I work closely with talented perfumers to translate that narrative into a fragrance. For example, with Sun Soaked, the inspiration was the vibrant Mediterranean beauty of Mallorca. We experimented with notes that captured the essence of that environment – bright citrus, lush florals, and warm woods. Once the composition is finalised, the process moves to production, where the fragrance
is blended and packaged in Sydney, Australia with the utmost attention to detail and sustainability. What role does storytelling play in creating your fragrances Storytelling is at the heart of everything we do. Each fragrance is a sensory journey, designed to transport you to a specific place or memory. It’s a way of connecting emotionally with our customers, creating a meaningful experience that goes beyond the product itself. Can you describe a day in your life as a business owner No two days are ever the same, which I love! Mornings often start with family time, followed by meetings with my team or collaborators. Some days are dedicated to product development, while others are spent reviewing marketing plans or preparing for launches. I also make time to connect with our customers and partners – it’s so rewarding to hear how LUMIRA resonates with them. What’s in the pipeline for LUMIRA in 2025 We have some exciting launches planned! In March, we’re releasing a special product for International Women’s Day. In April and May, we’re introducing an update to our Hand & Body Wash and Lotions, and later in the year, we’ll have a limited-edition candle. We’re also exploring new partnerships and collaborations to continue expanding LUMIRA’s story.
“If it were easy, everyone would do it. Knowing that it isn’t easy, accepting it, and continuing to work toward my dreams makes it a little more palatable”
Tell me about your love of Korean culture and preventative East Asian medicine I fell in love with Korean culture and became fixated on what the South Korean population were doing – their daily self-care rituals, their diet, their skin treatment routine. As an avid lover of everything Asian medicine – think acupuncture, naturopaths, and tonics – I became fascinated with these locally grown South Korean super fruits and herbs used as medicine in their routine. East Asian culture and medicine hinge on this idea of prevention, and that is the backbone of the brand. What inspired you to create Seoul Tonic Working at LVMH and Red Bull, I fell in love with brands that were linked to a time, place, and location. Seoul Tonic needed to be deeply rooted in Korean culture in a super authentic way, which is why I went to Seoul multiple times during Covid to find a South Korean business partner. I partnered with Mr Park from Gyeongju (two hours from Seoul), a third-generation farmer with a patented extraction method, producing some of the highest quality health products for the region. Using his extraction method, heritage story, and our ability to brand, market, and bring a product to life, we created Seoul Tonic with a world-first processing

technique and formulation. Give me the elevator pitch of Seoul Tonic Seoul Tonic is pioneering a new consumption moment in the Western world, using a world-first patented formulation developed over generations in South Korea. With sustainable aluminium foil packaging, we’re an ultra-premium drink that perfectly intersects wellness and play. “Drink before drinking” is our tagline, utilising ingredients scientifically proven to support alcohol metabolism, reduce inflammation, and provide over 242mg of bio-absorbable potassium – more than most hydration sachets. What do you forecast to be the next big wellness trend of 2025 I believe the moderation movement and sober-curious trend will continue to strengthen in 2025. What’s in the pipeline for Seoul Tonic in 2025 We’re launching a new product in January in matte black packaging using Mr Park’s award-winning apple cider vinegar with Korean ginseng and pear. It protects teeth while delivering daily ACV benefits, supports post-drinking recovery, and aids digestion. This product will elevate Seoul Tonic’s brand and continue to capture health-conscious individuals. I will also be travelling a lot more around the world to continue to launch Seoul Tonic into other markets.

YEAR OF BIG MOVES WITH CAITLIN O’LOAN
PR whizz, Caitlin O’Loan, Founder of boutique public relations agency COCOM, reflects on the past 21 years and lets us know what’s to come.
Reflecting on 21 years, what’s been the most pivotal moment in building COCOM While working from a home office – before that was even a thing – was great, it did have its limitations. We made the jump to a fantastic office space at West Village nearly seven years ago, and it’s been a joy to come to work each day since then. How has the PR landscape changed since you first started PR is ever-evolving, particularly over the last 10 years, with digital platforms emerging and social media becoming an integral part of the mix in lifestyle PR. Amidst all this change, the basic tenets of building relationships, staying across the news cycle to understand what makes a good story (and what doesn’t), and following trends in media and society remain paramount. Can you share a particularly memorable campaign that you brought to life I was particularly thrilled and grateful each time I led a media trip to some of the world’s best hotels and experiences, such as cruising the Irrawaddy River in Myanmar and whizzing through Europe on luxury trains. What’s in the pipeline for COCOM in 2025 COCOM is looking at some exciting projects across travel and hotels, the arts, retail, property, luxe goods, and not-for-profit – which is the perfect recipe mix for 2025. Bring it on!

YEAR OF EFFORTLESS BEAUTY WITH LILY LANDERS
Want an extra 20 minutes of beauty sleep each morning? A visit to Founder of Brow Posse, Lily Landers, will have you saying “I woke up like this” – literally.
You prefer not to label Brow Posse as a “beauty” studio. Why I love the word ‘beauty,’ but I don’t label Brow Posse as a beauty studio because it’s a niche business offering hand-selected, quality services, rather than a typical beauty studio with a wide range of treatments. With so many beauty studios in Brisbane, I want Brow Posse to stand out as a unique offering. What are your signature treatments My top three signature treatments are brows (shaping and laminations), lifted lashes, and lip blush cosmetic tattooing. They’re all essential treatments that make you feel effortlessly beautiful from the moment you wake up. These are the top three focal points of the face. What is the Brow Posse philosophy Brow Posse’s philosophy centres around modern-day lived-in beauty rituals – a low-maintenance approach to achieving a high-maintenance aesthetic. What do you forecast will be the most significant trends in the brow and lip industry in 2025 Brow laminations will become a must-have aesthetic statement, and lifted lashes will remain an aesthetic staple. Lip blush cosmetic tattooing will be on the rise in Australia in 2025. What’s in the pipeline for Brow Posse in 2025 I plan to establish Brow Posse as a dedicated lip blush studio as much as I am a brow studio, maintaining our niche focus in 2025. I won’t be adding other services; instead, I want to excel in the niche services we offer.

YEAR OF FRESH STARTS WITH BRITTANY POTTER
This year, it’s all about leaving the past behind and embracing bigger and better things. Brittany Potter from Flashback Laser Tattoo Removal understands the power of moving forward and shares her plans for the new year.
What inspired you to start your own tattoo removal clinic I’ve had many friends in the tattoo industry, and I love watching the creative process they go through, especially when it comes to hiding regrets by blasting over existing tattoos. It’s no easy feat! To involve myself in the industry more, I thought removing these bad tattoos would be a great idea. What inspired you to start Brisbane’s Skin Camouflage Tattoo clinic I love helping people and seeing their faces light up with the progress of removing a tattoo, so naturally, my next goal was to expand my services to include fixing their scars. The process of scar camouflage is fascinating, as it requires very particular colour matching to be successful. With skin camouflage tattooing, the results are instant, with minimal downtime. What do you think sets your clinic apart from others Being an owner-operator type of business sets me apart from the big companies because you’re guaranteed to get me every time. I have knowledge of your tattoos from the get-go, which helps minimise your pain levels where I can. It can be very expensive to get a tattoo removed, so I do my best to make it affordable for everyone. I like to think my warmth and ability to talk underwater also help distract from the pain. What’s in the pipeline for you in 2025 Providing skin camouflage tattooing is my biggest focus for 2025.

YEAR OF STRENGTH WITH ANDREW PAP
Andrew Pap, Athletic Director of famous fitness franchise Fitstop, is staying motivated and driven as he unlocks his potential this new year.
Can you describe the Fitstop training philosophy It’s honestly quite simple. At Fitstop, we inspire the world to move more to live more. Life gets so busy for so many of us and it can be difficult to make time to get to the gym. We get it. We’re focused on helping our members realise their strongest selves, both physically and mentally What sets Fitstop apart in the fitness market Fitstop is a community. On those days when the last thing you feel like doing is going to the gym, our group training sessions ultimately get you there and you never regret turning up! What tips do you have for anyone getting started on their fitness journey My biggest tip is to think big but start small. Set goals that excite you, even the ones that make you nervous, but don’t set unrealistic starting points. What’s in the pipeline for you in 2025 If it’s anything like 2024, it’s going to be another busy year for me. Juggling being a father, husband, athlete, and business owner.
YEAR OF SIMPLICITY WITH SIMONE VESCIO AND REIKA ROBERTS
Founded in Australia by long-time collaborators Simone Vescio and Reika Roberts, SIMKA focuses on clean, clinical skincare, born from their extensive expertise in the aesthetics industry. Looking ahead, SIMKA continues to set new standards in conscious skincare.
Can you give us the elevator pitch of your business, Derma Aesthetics
At Derma Aesthetics, we’re not just a distributor; we’re a partner in skincare innovation and education. We’re the driving force behind some of the most respected brands in the industry, including Dermaviduals, SIMKA, and EXCEED microneedling. Our mission is to empower skin clinics with science-backed products and professional tools that deliver real results while fostering a community that shares our passion for skin health. What inspired you to create SIMKA’s SPF range, and what is ‘skinimalism’ We recognised a gap in the market for an SPF that not only protects against UVA and UVB rays but also delivers skincare benefits. We used this as the foundation of our SPF formulations. I say “simple,” but that’s far from the truth! Our primary focus was creating a clean formula free from irritating ingredients that could compromise the skin’s barrier – a challenge we successfully overcame. The ‘skinimalism’ concept is at the heart of SIMKA, emphasising a mindful, minimalist approach to skincare that focuses on long-term skin health with simplified routines that deliver maximum benefits. Why is SPF for the lips so important, and how does your Lip Therapy SPF 15 help with that The lips are delicate, with thinner skin and no protective sweat or oil glands, making them vulnerable to UV damage. Protecting them with SPF helps prevent sunburn, ageing, and skin cancer. SIMKA Lip Therapy SPF 15 nourishes dry, chapped lips with shea butter and vitamin E, delivering deep hydration and locking in moisture. Its SPF 15 shields against UV damage while soothing, repairing, and restoring softness. With 50+ years of combined skincare expertise, what’s the one skincare myth you’d love to bust once and for all The belief that physical (mineral) sunscreens are always better for your skin and the environment than chemical ones is a myth. Both types protect your skin by absorbing and neutralising UV rays. Physical filters like zinc oxide reflect about 5% of UV rays and absorb the rest, while chemical filters convert UV rays into a small amount of heat. Additionally, as ‘reef safe’ is not a regulated term,
“Embrace the fluidity of visionary creativity. It’s about staying adaptable while continuing to push boundaries”
brands can claim their products are reef safe without scientific backing. The most understood definition refers to SPF that doesn’t contain Oxybenzone, which is suspected of contributing to coral bleaching. All SIMKA SPFs are free from Oxybenzone. We offer mineral-based sunscreens with organic photostabilisers and dual-filter formulations that combine physical and chemical filters for broad-spectrum protection without heaviness or a white cast. Choose what works best for your skin, knowing both types can offer excellent protection when thoughtfully formulated. What’s in the pipeline for SIMKA in 2025 In 2025, SIMKA is continuing to redefine skincare simplicity. We’re working on expanding our product offerings to include innovations that go beyond traditional skincare, integrating advanced formulations to support both external and internal skin health. Education is also a key focus – providing tools and resources to empower individuals and clinics to embrace our minimalist approach while prioritising long-term skin health.

FEELIN’ FRESH
Fresh-faced makeup is enjoying a well-deserved renaissance, as beauty lovers embrace the ‘less is more’ philosophy. Say goodbye to filters and heavy layers – authenticity and natural skin are taking centre stage. So, the next time you reach for your makeup bag, focus on minimal products that enhance your features rather than mask them. Think dewy, glowing skin, soft, eyes, and lips in their most natural pigment. It’s all about celebrating your true beauty and feeling confident in your own skin.

PLANTING THE SEED
With so many fleeting trends, it’s hard to know which health rituals are worth your time . I caught up with the wellness queen Dominique Elissa who’s been testing seed cycling for over three months. What’s that, you ask? It’s all about using different seeds throughout your menstrual cycle to balance hormones and tackle annoying symptoms like acne, bloating, and cramps. Curious? Keep reading for all the juicy details!
What kick-started your seed cycling journey I went off the birth control pill nine months ago. The first three months were smooth sailing, but the next three months brought symptoms. By month six, my skin broke out, my gut was in chaos, and I felt like I was doing everything right. I felt like, “Why me?” I saw people doing all the wrong things – not exercising, eating whatever they wanted – and their skin looked perfect. I just thought “I’m going to have to find an alternative method.” What are your tips for incorporating seed cycling into everyday life Gratitude has been the most effective practice for my health. It helped me see the good in my life and become a glass-half-full person. It was how I beat my insomnia and disordered eating. It was so powerful. My second tip is meditation. All these things are free, and people think wellness is expensive but doing Advaita meditation, mantra meditation, 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the afternoon, allowed me to go inward, and I think that was a big reason I found my purpose. Instead of masking my feelings by comparing myself to others on social media, I listened to my inner voice. Then, there’s movement, movement is just incredible. I just became a qualified Pilates instructor, and I am just completely obsessed with movement and just mixing it up because movement should be fun. What are the benefits you’ve noticed Seed cycling has been really beneficial
for me because I include it in my breakfast – whether on coconut yogurt or in a smoothie. It’s adding more protein and fat to my diet, which has a positive flow-on effect. It also encourages me to eat breakfast. So many women don’t eat breakfast and they fast, but all the studies on fasting are mainly done on men. Women have hormones and four phases of our cycle, meaning we should be eating accordingly, so that’s been one of the main benefits. It’s given me more routine in my life. What seeds do you have at different phases For phase one, you have flaxseed and pumpkin seed. For phase two, you have sesame and sunflower seeds. Because they level out the progesterone and estrogen in your body, and they also need to be crushed up. The seeds have to be grounded, you can’t have whole seed. That’s one of the reasons people are resistant to trying it, as it quite time consuming. What habit do you want to start in 2025 More low impact workouts, more yoga, more yin. Yoga had such a moment three years ago, and now we are all Pilates girlies. I want to see yoga come back to the surface, it’s so good for not only balancing hormones because it’s calming your parasympathetic nervous system, but it’s also going to help with detoxification through twisting, mobility, and a lot of breath, which is also amazing for our health.
YOUR LIFE, YOUR HEALTH
This year, advocate for your health! I spoke with Katherine Hay, a clinical nutritionist in women’s health and gut wellness, about her inspiring endometriosis journey.
How does nutrition impact managing endometriosis, hormone imbalances, and fertility challenges Nutrition is foundational in supporting these conditions. With endometriosis, for example, reducing inflammation through an anti-inflammatory diet can significantly alleviate symptoms. Hormonal imbalances can often be addressed by stabilising blood sugar levels and supporting liver detoxification with the right nutrients. For fertility challenges, focusing on nutrient-dense foods, optimising gut health, and addressing deficiencies like folate, iron, and omega-3s are crucial. Tailored nutrition allows the body to function optimally, supporting overall health and specific conditions. What inspired you to launch Kaptured Nutrition and All Things Better, and how do your products support women’s fertility and postnatal journeys All Things Better was born out of a desire to fill gaps I saw in women’s/people’s health care and to be able to care for as many people as possible on a larger scale. As a clinical nutritionist who has been practicing for over eight years in clinical practice, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges people face in accessing highquality, evidence-based, effective supplements.
Our Natal Support supplement is designed to provide comprehensive preconception, pregnancy, and postpartum care with key nutrients to support these seasons of life. What advice would you give to women who suspect they have endometriosis, given the challenges in getting a timely diagnosis If you suspect you have endometriosis, trust your instincts and advocate for yourself. Do not stop advocating for yourself until you are heard. Keep a detailed symptom diary and seek out a specialist — ideally a gynaecologist experienced with endometriosis. Early diagnosis can make a significant difference in managing symptoms and improving quality of life. What’s next for you in your clinical practice and advocacy for women’s health The next chapter is all about growth and impact. I’m focused on expanding my clinic, Kaptured Nutrition, to reach more women through online programs and consultations. For All Things Better, we’re looking to develop new products that address additional gaps in people’s health – new formulations are already in the pipeline. I’m excited to share more in the new year.
You probably think this ad is about you, and it is. Don't fall victim to pesky varicose veins, get your legs summer-ready and say goodbye to them for good with the experts in the game.
First, let’s start with the year that was: 2024 For this, I pulled the Knight of Swords (arrogant, impulsive, challenging) with the Strength card reversed (inner-strength and fortitude).
Collectively, it’s been exhausting! When it felt like we couldn’t take any more ‘lessons from the universe’, we were thrown another curveball. Most of us grappled with an increasing sense of dread about the economy, our quality of lives, the cost of living – and that’s just the macro stuff. Relationships were tested; friendships and what we value were put under the microscope. Those who

“Integrity will be rewarded”
shouted the loudest were rewarded, often at a high cost to the rest of us.
The good news? 2025 promises to be a much better year, with one very important caveat: if you behave with integrity, you will be rewarded. The Seven of Pentacles represents the joy and satisfaction that comes from honest work – from a literal sense of course, but also when it comes to all facets of life.
The Six of Wands tells us that outside recognition is our reward for putting in the hard yards. In other words, in 2025, the nice guys will finish first.
HEALING SPACES
Dedicated wellness spaces are becoming an essential feature in homes, offering a retreat from the chaos of daily life. Gone are the days of simply having a home office – now, people are carving out areas for yoga, meditation, and mindful practices. These serene rooms are designed to promote calm and focus, providing a sanctuary to unwind and recharge. With life growing increasingly stressful, a healing room offers a muchneeded escape for mental and physical well-being.

In a media landscape where digital is king, the revival of print publications is a reminder to slow down, be present, and savour the mindfulness of reading, offering reprieve from the relentless noise of online.
WORDS NATALIE MCGOWAN
Growing up with a journalist dad who worked in newsrooms his whole life and a mum who’s spent her entire career in fashion – and never missed an issue of Vogue – I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the art of magazines. But, in today’s chronically online world, it feels like we’ve collectively traded the written word for fleeting, bite-sized videos – myself included.
Our attention spans barely outlast a 10-second TikTok, as Netflix plays in the background and group chat notifications pile up at the top of our screens. We all remember Carrie Bradshaw’s famous line: “Sometimes I would buy Vogue instead of dinner. I felt it fed me more,” but let’s be honest, that sentiment has faded over time. For better or for worse, most of us now get our news from 30-word Instagram captions and hear about the hottest trends via TikTok, no longer relying on magazines and newspapers to keep us informed.
And yet, while we may no longer depend on it and its popularity has undoubtedly declined since its heyday in the ‘90s and 2000s, there’s no denying there’s been a quiet revival of print, especially in the past 12 months. Last year saw the return of iconic publications Elle Australia and Cosmopolitan Australia, and with them, the nostalgic thrill of flipping through
the pages of considered content and ripping open the sealed section. This time, without the fear of being caught (IYKYK). Although it may not hold the same influence it once did, there’s a fresh interest in it that can’t be ignored.
So, what’s behind this resurgence?
“The digital space is undoubtedly cluttered these days with content being promoted to us constantly,” says Editor-In-Chief at RUSSH, Jess Blanch. “Engaging with a print title is a way to reclaim this agency, coupled with that feeling of holding something tangible; a way to immerse in storytelling without distractions.”
The resurgence of nostalgic mediums isn’t a new trend. From film photography to vinyl records, there’s been a growing desire for tactile experiences that pull us offline and away from our screens. “As a society, we are learning it is not healthy to be perennially online and print will always allow for a genuine moment of engagement,” Blanch says.
As we continue to navigate through the digital world, magazines give us the opportunity to escape, offering a curated way to consume media in an overstimulated world – and, at the very least, we can all agree they make for stylish coffee table décor. So, dear readers, kudos to you.

What’s your dream location to perform in 125th and Lennox, New York City
It’s crazy how some moments stick with you. For me, one of those moments was stumbling upon a talented young guy named Jalen Ngonda busking at Herne Hill Market back in 2020. My partner and I were wandering the streets of South East London, trying to find some brightness on a gloomy pandemic day. And then we heard him sing. The sound of his voice was like a ray of sunshine – insane, like nothing we’d ever heard before. I were blown away, and knew this guy was going to make it big.
Fast forward to today, and I was stoked to hear that Jalen’s touring Australia. I jumped at the chance to grab tickets and chat with him about his music, his journey, and what’s next.
Growing up in a typical American family in Maryland, Jalen’s early life was filled with church, school, and playing video games. However, it was the music played by his parents that truly shaped his sound. “I listened to hiphop, R&B, soul, and gospel,” he recalls. “But since I was 11, I’ve been hooked on music from the 50s, 60s, and early 70s. There’s something special about the soul and emotion in those old records.”
Jalen’s love for old-school soul music is evident in his joyful sound, which is reminiscent of a bygone era. When asked what he wants his audience to
feel, he simply says, “I want them to feel good.” This sentiment is echoed in his thoughts on the soul revival: “The soul music that people love is just very good songs that were written to make people feel something, usually good, and it transcends no matter what time or decade.”
My partner and I love to chuck on his vinyl on an evening or weekend; his sounds definitely have an urge to uplift your entire mood. Jalen’s defining moment came when he appeared on The Graham Norton Show alongside stars like Kiera Knightley and Cher. He has also performed at Glastonbury, one of the world’s biggest festivals that’s been going on for half a decade. What a mean feat!
His favourite track to perform is “Don’t You Remember,” which showcases his soulful vocals and nostalgic sound. When it comes to his style, Jalen describes it as a mix of 40s to 90s fashion, without any particular order or fusion.
As Jalen prepares to tour Australia with his band, including Benjamin Mckone on drums and James Mckcone on bass, he’s looking forward to exploring the country and meeting new people. When asked who he’d love to perform with, he names the legendary Ray Charles. As for the one song he wishes he had written, Jalen cites “She Knows Me Too Well” by the Beach Boys. I ask him, “What’s next for you?” He responds, “coming to you!” Catch Jalen Ngonda live at Princess Theatre in Woolloongabba on January 14, at his first-ever Australian tour.
Passion to powerhouse
In just five years, Adele has transformed her passion for natural stone into the globally recognised brand, Just Adele. From humble beginnings to attracting clients like Cartier, she shares how she balances creativity, family, and business while redefining furniture design.
INTERVIEW KIRI JOHNSTON
How long has the brand been around, and how did you start Just Adele began five and a half years ago as a passion project. It all started with a single Viola side table that I shared on my personal Instagram, and from there, things grew organically. In the beginning, it was just me creating from a place of pure passion for natural stone! Today, the brand has evolved into something far beyond what I initially imagined. We now have a beautiful gallery space, a small team, and the privilege of collaborating with clients around the world. There are also some incredibly exciting projects in the pipeline that I can’t wait to share! How do you keep your designs fresh but true to you Travel is one of my greatest sources of inspiration, particularly in Europe. I often find myself drawn to the small details seen at unexpected times such as during a walk or a morning run, this is usually when I do my most productive thinking — a beautifully designed entryway, unique hardware, or even a striking colour palette. I always follow my gut when designing and when making any decisions in life. I think this enables my brand and designs to feel deeply personal and a true reflection of who I am What’s your favourite piece or a project you’ve designed for Every piece I create feels like an honour, but one that truly stands out is a recent commission for Cartier’s new store. Collaborating with such an iconic brand was an incredibly special moment—almost like a dream come true! Can you walk us through a typical day No two days
are the same! My mornings usually start with Pilates and a babycino with my son. Sometimes, I dive into work early as we are working across multiple time zones. By 10am, I’m usually in the gallery or at my desk, balancing design work, production, site visits, and client meetings. I’ve been incorporating slower movements such as sauna and ice baths into my routine — it’s my way of resetting physically but also mentally. Taking that time for myself helps me show up as the best mum, wife, and director What’s the biggest challenge in running your business, and how do you overcome creative blocks or doubt Balancing the operational and creative side of the business while making time for family, friends, and myself is always a challenge. Moments of doubt and creative blocks can be particularly difficult — faced this firsthand at the start of 2024, along with burnout. Taking a step back was crucial! I focused on activities that inspired and recharged me, which helped me regain clarity and direction for Just Adele. That downtime became a turning point, allowing me to refocus which is when we started developing the Oro Collection we launched in December. If you could collaborate with any designer in the world, who would it be and why Kelly Wearstler, she is the queen! Her style feels so effortless but so beautifully curated. I love her approach to maximalism! Any exciting plans for 2025? We have many exciting things happening that will be revealed in 2025 We are expanding our collections and network globally.
