NEAR, FAR & OVERSEAS ESCAPES TO UNCOVER

PASSPORT TO PARADISE

LEditor’s etter

March was… a lot. Mercury retrograde, a solar eclipse, and a cyclone, just to keep things interesting.

If you’ve been feeling a little o !, a little scattered, or simply in need of space, you’re not alone. Sometimes a change of scenery isn’t just a luxury, it’s a mindset shift. A way to recalibrate.

That’s the spirit behind this month’s travel issue. Inspired by White Lotus Season 3 (yes, we’re obsessed too), it’s all about escapism in its many forms: tropical luxury, spiritual soul-searching, and a little personal chaos for good measure.

Our cover was shot at Crystalbrook Byron, one of my new favourite places to reset. Serene and grounding, with just the right amount of mystery. Our muse this month steps into her own private sanctuary, moving through slow walks, spa rituals and quiet moments of reflection. She’s not running away. She’s tuning in.

This issue isn’t just about where you go, it’s about how you want to feel when you get there. To check out. To reconnect. To feel present again. Whether it’s Byron Bay, Bali, or switching on flight mode from the couch, we all deserve a little escapism — and the clarity that often comes with it.

Inside, you’ll find slow travel, soulful stays, and thoughtful reflections that go deeper than the destination. Wherever you’re headed next, let this be your permission to pause, shift your state of mind, and wander into something new.

The escape isn’t just out there. It starts within.

ESCAPISM: IN SEARCH OF

WORDS KIRI JOHNSTON PHOTOGRAPHY CAROLINE ATTWOOD
Escape isn’t always about where you go. It’s about what you’re hoping to find when you get there.

In these pages, we unpack the modern pursuit of escape – one that stretches beyond geography. Today, travel is less about ticking o ! destinations and more about understanding the reasons we leave in the first place. What compels us to board the plane, book the retreat, or take the long way home? And what are we really hoping to discover when we arrive?

Inspired by the newly released White Lotus Season 3, this issue navigates the space between tropical luxury and spiritual longing. Crystalbrook Byron sets the scene for our cover story – an idyllic retreat where nature and design create the illusion of calm. There are slow walks through ancient forests, morning meditations, and spa rituals that promise renewal. But beneath the stillness, something lingers. Is this genuine transformation, or simply a more polished version of ourselves?

We live in an age of constant motion. Burnout

feels inevitable. Productivity is expected. Yet, the pull towards a slower, more intentional way of travelling is stronger than ever. There’s a shift underway. The rise of conscious escapes, restorative travel, and soulful stays suggests a growing desire for something quieter, more deliberate. We are travelling to reconnect, to recalibrate, and sometimes, to begin again.

This is escapism, redefined. Considered. Thoughtful. Deeply personal. Inside these pages, you’ll find destinations that encourage reflection, and stories that explore travel not as indulgence, but as a way to restore clarity and balance. From escapes near, far, and overseas, each journey o ! ers the chance to slow down –and maybe even see things di ! erently.

Whether you’re seeking stillness, adventure, or something in between, consider this your invitation to explore. Not just the world, but your place within it. Where will you go next?

CHECK IN,

TUNE OUT

Our April cover shoot unfolded in the lush heart of Byron Bay, where the rainforest hums, the pool steams, and life slows to a blissful pause.

WORDS KIRI JOHNSTON

It felt like Bali. The air was warm and heavy with the scent of rain; tropical greenery wrapped around us in every direction. As we shot our April cover, a gentle sprinkle dusted the canopy overhead while our muse moved through the rainforest barefoot, cloaked in silk and contemplation.

Set across 45 lush acres of subtropical rainforest, Crystalbrook Byron was the perfect backdrop for our White Lotus–inspired shoot. Serene on the surface, with something simmering beneath. The vibe? Tropical opulence meets spiritual soul-searching—with a touch of personal chaos, of course.

Each of the 92 Rainforest and Treetops Suites o ! ers cool, cosy air conditioning, soft linen sheets, and the tranquil soundtrack of nature just beyond your balcony. Mornings begin with yoga under the trees, afternoons drift away by the heated infinity pool, and evenings are best spent cocooned in your robe, wine in hand, listening to the

forest come alive.

For those chasing something deeper, Eléme Day Spa delivers. From meditative massages to glow-inducing facials, it’s the kind of place that recalibrates you from the inside out. One treatment in, and suddenly, your shoulders drop. Your mind slows. Your breath deepens.

There’s something about Crystalbrook Byron that invites you to stay awhile. Maybe it’s the winding boardwalks that lead you further into the forest. Maybe it’s the resort’s gentle luxury or its thoughtful commitment to sustainability—Crystalbrook is proudly partnered with EarthCheck. Or maybe it’s just the magic of Byron itself. Whatever it is, this isn’t just a stay. It’s a shift. A moment to escape the noise, breathe in the green, and rediscover a version of yourself you’d almost forgotten. Whether you’re here to transform, unwind, or simply float for a while, one thing’s certain: you’ll leave feeling lighter.

“Think clifftop dining, forestframed eco pools, and cabins designed to immerse guests in the island’s rugged beauty .”

The Whitsundays are about to get a serious upgrade. A world-class eco-lodge is set to transform Hook Island into a luxury retreat unlike anything else in Australia, blending untamed adventure with high-end sustainability. Think cli ! top dining, forest-framed eco pools, and cabins designed to immerse guests in the island’s rugged beauty. Along with the promise of barefoot luxury, it also opens up important conversations about preserving the island’s delicate ecosystem and honouring its deep Indigenous history.

After sitting dormant for over a decade, Hook Island is being reimagined by Epochal Hotels, led by CEO Glenn Piper. The 9.3-hectare site, once impacted by cyclones, will soon house 39 eco-conscious cabins, two distinctive dining venues, a Nordic-style forest spa, and a beach club designed for social connection. More than just a resort, Piper describes it as a “place of discovery and meaningful connection,” o ! ering everything from reef snorkelling to guided kayak tours along the ancient Ngaro Sea Trail.

Adventure, it seems, is the heartbeat of the new Hook Island. High-energy run clubs, music-fuelled sunset sessions, and immersive wellness experiences will replace the usual five-star clichés. For those looking to engage with conservation e ! orts, hands-on reef restoration programs, and coral planting initiatives will allow guests to directly contribute to preserving the island’s marine life.

Hook Island also holds deep cultural significance as home to the Ngaro people, one of Australia’s oldest living cultures. The island’s Ngaro Cultural

RAW BEAUTY MEETS LUXURY TRAVEL

A wild new eco-lodge is coming to Hook Island. Here’s what you need to know.

Site features 9,000-year-old rock art – the oldest known Indigenous site on Australia’s East Coast. Epochal Hotels has expressed an intention to build a relationship with the Ngaro and Gia people, with opportunities for Indigenousled guest experiences, cultural storytelling, and operational involvement. If approached with genuine respect and collaboration, this could pave the way for meaningful, long-term partnerships that honour the island’s rich cultural heritage.

With sustainability at the core of the development, Epochal Hotels is promising a lodge that enhances rather than harms the island. From cyclone-resistant architecture to water-e cient systems and recycled wastewater irrigation, every detail has been designed to minimise environmental impact. The lodge will limit guest numbers to just 39 cabins to maintain a sense of seclusion and ensure the natural landscape remains the star of the show. While large-scale developments on fragile ecosystems require careful consideration, Epochal Hotels is working closely with conservation experts to ensure sustainability remains at the forefront.

Set to open in 2027, Hook Island’s eco-lodge is shaping up to be one of Australia’s most ambitious sustainable tourism projects. A destination designed for adventure-seekers and nature lovers alike, it’s a bold vision of what luxury travel can look like in the modern age.

One thing is certain – Hook Island is about to become one of the most talked-about travel destinations in the country. READ MORE

Arriving at 28 Degrees Byron Bay for the first time was an experience I wish I could relive time and time again. MCLAREN VALE

UNCORKED

Often flying under the radar, McLaren Vale is home to over 100 wineries and 74 cellar doors. Known for bold shiraz and smooth cabernet sauvignon, it’s a must for sipping, savouring, and soaking in the scenery. Here are my top five picks.

1. CORIOLE VINEYARDS

My personal favourite, Coriole Vineyards boasts a Tuscan charm, overlooking sprawling views of vineyards. With the option for indoor dining in their restaurant or in their courtyard under the arbour, we opted to make the most of the sunshine. A must-try? Their limoncello spritz – refreshing, zesty, and the perfect sip for a lazy afternoon. Pair it with their house-made bread, charcuterie, and creamy hummus for a truly indulgent experience.

2. ALPHA BOX & DICE

A close second to Coriole was Alpha Box & Dice. This boutique winery is anything but traditional –they’re on a mission to create an ‘alphabet of wine’, where each bottle tells a unique story. As well as the beautifully designed labels, each representing a letter, and incredible wine, the laid-back vibe is unmatched. Housed in a rustic, eclectic cellar door, the space is filled with mismatched furniture and vintage knick-knacks. If you’re looking for something with personality, grab a glass and enjoy a tasting that’s as much about storytelling as it is about great wine.

3 . CHALK HILL

Set on top of a hill, Chalk Hill overlooks the Vale, making it the perfect place to slow down and unwind after a day of wine tastings. The venue itself is home to a collection of businesses including Chalk Hill Wines, Never Never Distilling Co., and Vita Pizzeria, making it an ideal spot for groups and families. If you’re planning a visit, I recommend grabbing a spot on the grass, with a glass in hand to soak up the live music as the sun goes down.

4 . D’ARENBERG

A controversial topic among locals due to its unmissable presence, d’Arenberg – aka The Cube – is just as much an experience as it is a cellar door. With five levels of sensory exploration, from surreal art installations to panoramic tasting rooms, this architectural marvel is anything but ordinary. If you’re looking for a winery a little out of the box, this is it.

5 . DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE WINES

One of the first wineries that sparked my interest in McLaren Vale was Down The Rabbit Hole Wines. With a cult Instagram following, I wasn’t sure if it would live up to the hype – but it absolutely delivered. We booked a set menu at their FIORE restaurant as well as a wine tasting at the cellar door, and both experiences were divine. Perfect for families and groups alike, you can easily spend a whole day here exploring what’s on o ! er.

MOVING TO LONDON IN YOUR 20S:

Life-changing or cliché?

WORDS + IMAGE KIRI JOHNSTON

Moving to London is practically a rite of passage for Australians. You hit your twenties, and suddenly half your group chat has swapped Brisbane for Brixton. But is it worth it? Here’s my take.

It was 2016 when I first got a taste of the London expat life. I’d packed a suitcase and set o ! to Europe with a girlfriend, ready for one wild Euro summer. London was our base — we stayed at my brother’s South West flat with his housemates, made the most of the local haunts, and got a little glimpse of what it’s like to live abroad. Over five whirlwind weeks, we ticked o ! nearly every city in Europe, celebrating my 21st birthday in Greece with friends. I don’t think we could’ve squeezed in anything else if we tried. We were sunbathing and exploring by day, partying and dancing by night. Messy, carefree, and having the time of our lives.

When I flew home to Brisbane, I was broke and exhausted — but inspired. On a whole new level. Within a few years, I’d sold nearly everything I owned, saved like crazy, and convinced my boyfriend to move to London with me. Everyone thought I was mad. “You’re such a beach bum,” they said. “You’ll hate the cold.” But I didn’t care, I was keen to prove them wrong. Of course, leaving my family, friends, and my dogs behind wasn’t easy. But I was in my early twenties, desperate for something new. What did I have to lose?

We applied for our two-year visas, packed two suitcases, and o ! we went. After a two-month holiday, we arrived in London and had that ‘oh shit’ moment. No jobs, nowhere to live, and no connections. But we weren’t worried. Figuring it out was part of the fun. At first, we did the classic move everyone does — found a share house in Clapham. I was determined not to fall into the cliché ‘Aussies in London’ trap… but let’s be honest, it’s inevitable. Before long, old school friends who’d also made the move started sliding into my DMs, keen to catch up. It was 2019. We worked by day, then spent the rest of our time embracing the pub culture, catching gigs at Ally Pally, bar hopping around Soho, hitting up the clubs, and getting around the festival scene. We’d book cheap flights to Spain or jump on the train to the Cotswolds or Edinburgh for the weekend. London life was filled with busy days, late nights, and those occasional pinch-me moments.

On weekdays, you’d find me wedged onto the Tube, walking over Tower Bridge to get to work, grabbing a quick Pret or M&S lunch. Evenings usually turned into dinners in town, which somehow always escalated into late nights out with minimal sleep. I’ll admit — we all lived for payday. Rent wasn’t cheap — neither were those spontaneous trips to Italy. But we always made it work. Somehow, we still managed to have new clothes and make it to the local for a Sunday roast.

Then came Covid. London fell eerily quiet. Everything stopped. The streets were empty, and so was the Tube. But by that point, London was home. I’d been lucky to work with the head o ces of big brands like Harrods, Adidas, NARS, and a few cool start-ups. I seized every opportunity to learn as much as I could. When you put yourself out there, doors keep opening. London’s unspoken rule: work hard, play harder. Everyone had mastered the art of work-life balance — and I was all for it.

BUT IS MOVING TO LONDON IN YOUR 20S ACTUALLY WORTH IT?

Yes, it was grey and freezing, but honestly, that was the least of my worries. I learnt to appreciate the cold — something I’d never done back in Australia. Wrapped in a wool coat, rushing to the station in the crisp morning air felt reinvigorating. With the right layers, you’re sweet. I swapped beach days for scarves and gloves, pounding the pavement like a proper Londoner. The chaos, the grit, the madness — it was all character-building. It toughened me up. I even had my phone swiped in broad daylight. But it’s all part of it. You grow thick skin, learn to hold your own, and somewhere along the way, you start to love London for what it is.

Over five years, I made friends from all walks of life and uncovered every corner of the city. On weekends, I’d bounce between Camden, Angel, Shoreditch, Richmond, Hampstead, and Brixton — each with its own distinct charm. And when we weren’t exploring London, we were exploring Europe. Weekend getaways became the norm — Paris, Stockholm, Malta, Croatia, Lisbon — you name it. After Clapham, we moved east to Bethnal Green and immersed ourselves in the cultural mix there. Then to Dalston, my favourite spot in London. Much less polished than the west, brimming with creative energy and an unapologetic sense of individuality.

London pushed me. I learnt to back myself, to walk into rooms where I knew no one, to take risks. I left Brisbane thinking I had it all figured out. I came back knowing there’s so much more out there and how naïve I was before. We kept extending our visas, but after five years, we knew it was finally time to come home.

London will always be a magical place to me. And just like anything in life, it is what you make of it. So, is moving to London in your 20s worth it? Absolutely. Invest in a good pu ! er. Brace yourself for the fast-pace. Say yes to everything. It might just be the best thing you ever do.

SLOW TRAVEL with Jacqui Toumbas

In 2023, I travelled to Southern Italy, expecting a beautiful experience, but I didn’t realise just how much it would change me.

At home in Australia, I was always moving. Daughter. Sister. Business owner. Content creator. My life was a constant juggle of expectations and endless to-do lists. But the moment I stepped o ! the plane in Puglia, everything shifted. No one knew me. I wasn’t defined by my work or my relationships. I could just be.

For the first time in years, I felt free. I wasn’t there to be productive. I wasn’t there to tick anything o ! a list. I wandered through ancient towns where time seemed to move di ! erently. I sat in sunlit courtyards, drinking espresso without thinking about what came next. I lingered over long lunches that stretched well into the afternoon. Slowly, I noticed the simple joy of being present.

What impacted me most, though, were the people. Chiara and Maria ran the family-owned masseria where I stayed. What started as a simple booking became something much deeper. We shared meals together in their kitchen, laughing late into the night. I learnt about their deeprooted connection to the land, their traditions, and their way of life. They

welcomed me into their world as if I were family, and through them, I came to understand that travel isn’t just about visiting places. It’s about the people who bring those places to life.

That connection shaped everything I do now. When I returned home, I knew I wanted to share that feeling with others, especially those, like me, who were always chasing the next thing. That’s how Savour the Slow was born: a series of intimate retreats designed to o ! er people the chance to pause, reset, and truly connect. To slow down, and to be part of something real.

The first retreats sold out quickly, confirming what I had sensed. People are craving more meaningful experiences. Savour the Slow isn’t a tour. It’s an invitation to step into the rhythm of Southern Italy. Guests stay in family-run properties like restored monasteries and centuries-old masserias, where they’re welcomed like old friends. Together, we cook with local chefs, learn from artisans, and gather around long tables, not as tourists, but as part of the community.

Slow travel isn’t just about seeing the world. It’s about rediscovering yourself.

MILANO

WITH BIÀNCA MARCHI

The Italian-born beauty and jet-setter shares her go-to spots to eat, shop, and stay in Milan.

BEST PLACE TO STAY

Casa Brivio! The perfect place to stay if you are looking to experience Milanese life like a local.

BEST COFFEE SPOT

Pasticceria Sissi – it’s home to the best brioche in Milan. If you want to soak in the true Milanese vibe, grab a co ! ee at Leonardo on Via Aurelio Sa and watch the locals in their element.

A MUST-VISIT GALLERY

Milan has an incredible art scene, so it’s always worth checking what’s on before you go – there are usually some spectacular exhibitions. Artforum is a great place to start. On my last trip, I visited Kaufmann Repetto (kaufmannrepetto.com) and Fondazione Prada – both were outstanding.

BEST PLACE TO SHOP

Casa del Bianco is my go-to for the best Italian-made pyjamas and friulane shoes – it’s one of those rare gems that feels like stepping back in time. If you are after high-end fashion, visit Antonia, particularly at the original location in Brera for the full experience. And for vintage lovers, Cavalli e Nastri is a must. They have a few locations in Milan and every single one is worth a visit.

TOP SPOT FOR WINING AND DINING

For classic Milanese fare: Trattoria Milanese. I’ve been coming here with my family since I was little and it’s still perfect. For a cult favorite: La Latteria – their lemon spaghetti is a must! For seafood: Langosteria Bistrot. For something buzzy: Trippa. It’s been one of Milan’s hottest restaurants for years and for good reason. If you can get a booking, run – don’t walk! For wine and snacks: Bar Paradiso, Associazione Salumi e Vini Naturali (on Corso Garibaldi), and Osteria alla Concorrenza. Each has an excellent wine list and a great atmosphere.

INSIDER TIPS

Do your research! Milan is full of hidden gems, but you need to know where to look. The best spots aren’t always in the most obvious locations, so take recommendations from locals or those who’ve spent time exploring the city properly.

WHERE ELSE TO VISIT IN ITALY

The other city I love is Florence for the art and food, Sardegna (not the main towns) but just experience the whole Island. It is so wild and beautiful. I also love the entire area around Noto in Sicilia. You can’t beat the food.

INTERVIEW BIANCA LICINA

STAY My favourite Parisian hotel is Hôtel Madame Rêve in the 1st arrondissement — just a short walk from the Seine, the Louvre, and Opéra Garnier. It has a sauna, impeccable service and celeb-sighting in the intimate lobby.

PACKING TIP Add everything to a Canva whiteboard to create outfits — you’ll quickly spot what you won’t use (like that bag!) and leave it behind.

PARIS with @dom.overseas

Paris still has a special pull for Dominique Nurtsch, who lived there in her twenties while working for VOGUE and Glamour magazine. Now based in Australia, she returns often to shoot for brands like H&M and Pandora. Here, she shares her perfect Paris day — just in time for your next trip.

9AM: WALK When flying in from Australia, I love to visit the hotel gym for a stretch before walking to my favourite park, Palais Royal, and grabbing coffee from Café Kitsuné or La Crème de Paris — it’s a must!

10AM: SHOP It wouldn’t be a Paris trip without a little shopping – or “investing” as my friends and I call it. I always visit Saint Laurent on Rue Saint-Honoré and the Merci concept store on Rue de Richelieu for something unique.

11AM: WANDER Start at Palais Royal, stroll through Jardin des Tuileries past the Louvre, then walk along the Seine towards the Eiffel Tower via Place de la Concorde — I could do it every day.

1PM: LUNCH A sandwich from a bakery (with a pain au chocolat for dessert) is my go-to — M. Denis in the 9th is worth the trip and will ruin you forever!

3PM: COFFEE I’m a creature of habit and always head back to Palais Royal for an afternoon coffee at Café Kitsuné — they’re open until 7pm.

4PM: SNAP A trip to Paris isn’t complete without an Eiffel Tower snap — Place de Mexico has the best view and fewer crowds. I shot an H&M campaign here and love the angle.

7PM: DINNER Head to Siena for dinner — one of the hottest new restaurants, I went with Hermès and the atmosphere is incredible.

ROAM & NEST

WORDS KIRI JOHNSTON

Stays that feel like home, only better. Beyond the photo op, these are the places that linger – rich in story, rooted in place, and made for the curious.

PASSALACQUA, LAKE COMO

Some hotels try hard to impress. Passalacqua doesn’t need to. Set on the shores of Lake Como, this 18th-century villa has been quietly transformed into a 24-room hotel that feels more like the most beautiful private home you’ve ever stepped inside. Think hand-painted ceilings, lemon trees, hidden tunnels to the lake, and sta ! who somehow know what you want before you do. Rooms are spread across three buildings, each with their own quirks. The pool is lined with La DoubleJ cushions, fireplaces are lit in summer just because, and stories are tucked into every corner. It’s Italy at its most cinematic—and somehow, it still feels like a secret.

REGENT PHU QUOC, VIETNAM

If you’re craving quiet, this is it. Tucked away on Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island, Regent is the kind of place that makes everything else feel too loud. Surrounded by palms, lagoons and light, it’s built for proper switch-o ! mode: private plunge pools, deep tubs, a complimentary minibar (restocked daily), and silence so thick you can hear yourself think. Interiors are tactile and thoughtful, handmade tiles, sunken lounges, calming timber, and there’s even a nail studio by a French podiatrist, if that’s your thing. Whether you’re stretched out on a daybed or sailing Serenity, their private catamaran, this is luxury that lingers long after the tan fades.

MISS MIDGLEY’S, BRISBANE

Right on James Street but hidden in plain sight, Miss Midgley’s is one of Brisbane’s best-kept secrets—a 160-year-old former girls’ school, reimagined as a five-apartment boutique stay. Each apartment is individually styled with its own kitchen, o ! ering the privacy of a home. Behind the rosy, pink façade and coded gates, you’ll find interiors full of quiet charm and character-rich detail. There’s a private pool to relax and it’s pet-friendly. For Brisbanites or out-of-towners, it’s a dream staycay: walking distance to river strolls, boutique shopping, wine bars, bakeries and the Powerhouse Markets, with the option to retreat just as easily. No front desk, no interruptions—just keys, calm, and space to exhale.

Get me to an island retreat ASAP.

KRABI, THAILAND

DAEGU, SOUTH KOREA

As one of South Korea’s most populated cities, Daegu is a vibrant metropolitan hub nestled amidst stunning mountains, providing travellers with the perfect blend of urban excitement and natural beauty. With a lively nightlife, a thriving art scene, and rich historical sites, Daegu o ! ers a captivating experience that will make you never want to leave.

ROVANIEMI, FINLAND

Trademarked as the O cial Hometown of Santa Claus, this enchanting Finnish town feels straight out of a fairytale, boasting breathtaking scenery, luxurious accommodations, and delightful culinary experiences. While every season o ! ers its own charm, winter is widely regarded as the ideal time to visit, o ! ering the chance to witness the mesmerizing Northern Lights and experience the magic of a pristine snowy wonderland.

A Forever Thing

Husband-and-wife duo Geordan and Ellen are devoted to helping others celebrate their love through unique engagement rings.

For Geordan Polichronis, West End is far more than just the suburb he grew up in. It’s where he went to school, rowed from the local boat sheds, worked at The Gunshop Café when his parents owned it, and, most importantly, where he met and fell in love with his nowwife, Ellen. Today, it’s also home to their jewellery studio, Xronos Fine Jewellery.

Co-owned by Ellen, who handles the marketing and creative direction, and Geordan, who is a jeweller by trade, Xronos explores the art of slow made, traditionally crafted fine jewellery. What began as a shared passion for sketching and designing on one trip to Byron Bay quickly turned into a full-time business. “We launched with a small collection of everyday pieces,” says Ellen. “Before long, we started receiving custom orders for wedding rings. Then came the engagement ring enquiries, and that’s when the magic truly began.”

every detail is thought out, every element of material is purposefully sourced, and every piece is crafted here in our Brisbane studio.”

The Xronos experience is deeply personal, a far cry from online ring builders that, in their words, “turn one of the most sentimental pieces of jewellery into just another commodity.” Clients work directly with Geordan and Ellen in one-on-one appointments, discussing design inspiration, gemstones, and budget in an open and collaborative environment.

Xronos blends traditional craftsmanship with modern values, prioritising transparency in gemstone sourcing.

“We love to create tangible pieces imbued with sentiment and stories.”

By mid-2024, they took the leap from hobby to full-time commitment, opening their first studio in West Village and leaving their jobs to fully focus on Xronos. The brand’s name – derived from the Greek word chronos (meaning ‘time’) and their surname, Polichronis (‘many years’) – pays tribute to both their heritage and the timeless nature of their designs, crafted to be passed down through generations as heirlooms.

“We live in a fast-paced era, fuelled by new trend cycles and mass production,” says Ellen. “Central to the art of fine jewellery is crafting pieces that last a lifetime. As such, they need to be crafted with intention –

“We love the opportunity to source locally –working directly with the artisanal miners in Central Queensland who fossick and facet the stones themselves,” says Ellen. “Not only can we trace the gemstone back to the region, but we know it has a significantly lower environmental footprint.”

They also offer heirloom repurposing, transforming existing gold and gemstones into new designs as not only a way to lower costs for clients, but also contribute to the circular economy and prolong the sentimental value of a piece.

Visit the Xronos studio at the right time, and you might catch the magic firsthand as you peer through the workshop window – molten gold swirling, Geordan setting gemstones, and a unique piece of a couple’s story coming to life.

INSPIRED BY YOUR LOVE

At Xronos Fine Jewellery, traditional craftsmanship meets modern values.

Ready to make it official? Book a bespoke consultation with Geordan and Ellen and say “I do” to the perfect ring.

FOOTY TO FASHION

Connecting over Zoom from Brisbane to Osaka, we caught up with Quade Cooper to talk all things SHOSAI and living in Japan.

Is fashion something you always knew you wanted to do From a young age, I always knew I wanted to be a rugby player. But as you get older, you start to acquire a taste for di ! erent things. And so, fashion just became something that I love because it was a way to express myself, how I felt, the things I liked. It’s essentially an extension of your personality. And this is where rugby is a di cult thing, because we all wear a uniform. Or if you work in an o ce, you wear a uniform. So, you’re all the same, but then you watch how people wear those uniforms is di ! erent. You’re trying to find a way to be yourself in a cookie cutter environment. How can I express myself and be Quade Cooper? That’s how fashion started to be important to me. It was a really interesting way to express who I am and stand out as myself and not just Quade Cooper, the rugby player. Has living in Japan given you inspiration when designing new collections There is so much inspiration living over here in Japan, man. Japan is probably one of the most structured places. For example, everybody has to wear a suit. Men go to work and they have to wear a suit and tie and women are very modestly dressed. But if you come and you walk around the streets, you’ll see

so many ways to style a suit. The way they find a unique way to dress even though there’s so much stress on conforming... It’s very hard to explain. But I love the silhouettes, the baggy pants. That’s probably where I’ve gotten most inspiration from –the pants. Are there any designers you would love to collaborate with There’s so many. Someone that I’d love to collaborate with is Russell Westbrook. Just from the sense of we’ve both gone through a similar path in life. We’re both born in ‘88 and our style of play is very similar, you know? I love the way he plays the game. And his brand, which is called Honor the Gift, I think is amazing. What he’s been able to do with it as an athlete, mate, it’s inspired me to keep pushing at this. What are the biggest lessons you’ve learned since launching SHOSAI We’ve had so many lessons, bro. The first one is to be persistent, because in this space, coming from being a professional athlete, you’re gonna make mistakes. It’s not gonna be easy. And if you’re expecting it to be easy, well, you’re in the wrong game. The biggest advice I’d say is learn for yourself. Do as much as you can yourself at the start and get people on to help you. Be more of a student.

A LASTING IMPRESSION

When a quarter-life crisis hit Kellice, it ignited a journey into tattooing in pursuit of deeper fulfillment and purpose – one that has since drawn global icons like Olympian Ariarne Titmus and Actress-Dancer Juliet Doherty.

When the world stood still in 2019, Kellice experienced a moment of clarity. Though she loved her work as a multidisciplinary creative – spanning branding, photography, and social media marketing – she longed for a creative outlet that would push her skills further and challenge her in new ways. With her partner’s support, she took a leap into the world of tattooing and hasn’t looked back since.

Armed with years of experience in the creative industries, the career shift felt natural. “The line between an artist and a designer is easily blurred and having been a designer first has definitely guided my ability to translate e cacy in drawing and designing pieces for my clients,” says Kellice.

intentionality. She works closely with each client, making sure to understand the wants and needs of each individual.

“Tattoos aren’t just transactional. It’s personal.”

For Kellice, tattoos are far more than just ink on skin – “They’re personal and should be an exclusive experience.” The true reward for her comes when a client sees their tattoo after it’s completed. “When they cry, laugh, joke with me... when we share special moments together, and talk openly about life comfortably in a safe space. It’s the little things,” she says.

Since then, Kellice, who always ensures her clients have a positive experience, has made it her mission to upskill, completing a hand poke master course led by two prominent figures in the tattoo industry based in Portugal.

Drawing inspiration from the restorative powers of Mother Nature, the grandeur of Renaissance art and architecture, and the emotional depth of music – “Have you ever listened to a song and felt all the emotions at once? It’s unexplainable” – Kellice approaches tattooing with deep

Among Kellice’s most cherished works is her one-o ! design featuring the Latin phrase ‘Per Ardua Ad Astra,’ meaning ‘through adversity to the stars.’ That, along with inking global icons Ariarne Titmus and Juliet Doherty, stand out as career highlights.

Operating in a private, LGBTQIA+ safe space in South City Square, Kellice creates an experience that is as calming and therapeutic as it is meaningful, with piano music playing softly in the background. Just don’t expect a tattoo artist who specialises in the latest fads and fleeting trends like tramp stamps and Y2K cyber sigilism –Kellice is someone who stays in her own lane, creating tattoos that resonate deeply.

Would you inject salmon sperm into your face for a youthful glow? Molly Brown of Cosmetic Injectables Australia weighs in on skincare’s latest obsession and how it holds up against other treatments.

If the idea of getting a salmon sperm facial to achieve enviable skin sounds a little fishy to you, it’s fair to say you’re not in the minority by any means. It’s also fair to say you probably have a few more questions, like “huh?”.

Recently made famous by A-listers like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Aniston, the treatment has actually been around for years. “It started in South Korea, who are known for their innovative skincare,” explains Molly. “PDRN-based therapies have long been used there for antiageing and wound healing.”

What are PDRN-based therapies, you ask? It stands for polydeoxyribonucleotide, which is a compound derived from salmon DNA, hence the origin of the name ‘salmon sperm facial’. The facial utilises polynucleotides – a broader term for PDRN – extracted from this DNA, which is thought to hydrate, repair, and rejuvenate the skin. The polynucleotides are commonly sought after for their ability to promote cell regeneration and improve skin texture, with visible improvements that may last up to six months later.

Applied through microneedling or injections, Molly has noticed a significant

rise in demand for this treatment. “People are seeking natural, regenerative skincare over quick fixes,” she says, recommending this treatment to those looking for non-invasive solutions. Said to o ! er key benefits such as deep hydration for plumper skin, collagen stimulation for enhanced firmness, accelerated skin repair and healing, and a brighter, more even skin tone, the facial is also sensitive skin-approved, featuring antiinflammatory e ! ects for easily irritated complexions.

So, how does it stack up against traditional fillers? Unlike fillers, which are

“IT’S MORE THAN A FAD – DNABASED SKINCARE IS THE FUTURE OF LONG-TERM SKIN HEALTH AND REGENERATIVE TREATMENTS.”

primarily hyaluronic acid-based and focus on volume loss, the salmon sperm facial is designed for biostimulation, keeping your collagen cells active. While Molly doesn’t see it as a direct replacement for fillers, she believes it’s an excellent alternative that provides similar benefits without the need for traditional injectables.

Let Them, Love You

Your power is your vessel — it’s how you move through life with confidence, selftrust, and intention. But when we give too much or seek control, we lose it. Enter Let Them — the mindset shift that frees you from overextending. Ali Archdeacon shares how to reclaim your power and step into 2025 fully aligned.

TIP ONE: GROUND, CHECK IN, AND CONNECT WITH YOURSELF FREQUENTLY

Spend time in nature, digital detox, journal — go inward. Ask yourself: What lights me up? What drains me? Checking in regularly will help you reconnect with your authentic self.

TIP TWO: SET BOUNDARIES

Ask yourself: Where do I lack boundaries and where do I need to implement more? Consider emotional, physical, time, and digital boundaries. Boundaries protect your energy and allow you to show up fully in your life.

TIP THREE: BUILD YOUR SELF -WORTH

Self-awareness is key — reflect on what is going well and where you can grow. Cultivate selfacceptance and compassion. How do you speak to yourself? Practice nurturing self-talk and remind yourself that anything is possible for you.

Your power is always within you — it’s time to embrace it.

Long-haul flights can be tough, especially when you’re stuck in a cramped seat for hours. But if you’re prone to venous issues or have a family history of varicose veins, you might also be at a higher risk for problems like deep vein thrombosis.

Sitting still for long periods can a ! ect your circulation and lead to discomfort, but luckily, there are some simple, practical steps you can take to reduce your risk and feel more comfortable during and after your flight.

1. Wear comfortable, loose clothing: skip the tight jeans and opt for relaxed, breathable clothes like leggings or a tracksuit that won’t stop blood from flowing freely.

2. Keep moving: every hour, take a few minutes to stretch your legs, wiggle your toes, and even walk around the cabin for about five minutes.

3. Invest in compression stockings: compression stockings help stimulate blood circulation by applying gentle pressure to your legs. You can

grab travel socks at most pharmacies, but if you’re looking for more targeted support, consider class 2 compression stockings, which o ! er a stronger level of pressure.

4. Stay hydrated: the dry air in the cabin can easily lead to dehydration, which can make circulation problems worse, so make sure you drink plenty of water. It’s also a good idea to skip alcohol, as it can dehydrate you further and disrupt your circulation.

5. Avoid sleeping pills: if you struggle with sleep or anxiety, it might be tempting to take a sleeping aid to knock you out during the flight, but it could stop you from getting up and moving around when needed. Talk to your doctor about alternative methods.

FROM BUENOS AIRES TO BRISBANE

For years, Brisbane’s food scene has been ruled by pan-Asian eateries – so much so that it’s hard to remember a time when another cuisine held the spotlight. But there’s a new contender stepping up to the plate, ready to shake things up.

Enter South American cuisine.

Vibrant, bold, and deeply rooted in tradition, South American flavours are capturing the hearts (and appetites) of food lovers all over. And leading the charge in Brisbane?

La Boca Bar & Grill.

Tucked inside the riverside Stamford Plaza, La Boca has been delivering an authentic taste of Argentina since 2022. The restaurant’s warm yet sophisticated atmosphere has made it a favourite for everything from business lunches to family gatherings and celebrations. It’s the kind of place where you settle in, share plates of smoky, charred goodness, and let the rich flavours transport you straight to the streets of Buenos Aires.

At La Boca, fire is at the heart of everything. The restaurant

champions the traditional Asador technique – an ancient Argentinian method of cooking over open flames that creates deep, smoky flavours while keeping meats irresistibly tender on the inside and perfectly crisp on the outside. Peek inside their open-plan kitchen and watch the skilled chefs work their skills with fire.

And leading this fiery operation?

Head Chef Victor Ng. Victor brings a wealth of experience, having trained in French cuisine in Malaysia before mastering fire-based cooking in Singapore. His passion for Asador cooking is undeniable, and at La Boca, he blends authentic Argentine traditions with just the right touch of modern innovation. Every dish is a balance of heritage, technique, and bold, mouthwatering flavour.

Now, La Boca is turning up the heat once again with an exciting new menu – one that stays true to its roots while introducing fresh twists on classic flavours.

Ready to dig in? Your South American feast awaits.
