BEHIND THE SCENES

Basking in the golden light of the Sunshine Coast, Elise Gosdschan and our Style creative team created a flawless cover shoot at an idyllic Bli Bli property, surrounded by swaying palms and whitewashed breezeblocks. Highlighting Domayne’s outdoor furniture, the shoot captured the essence of alfresco living and summer entertaining. Photographed by Caroline Attwood and styled by Kiri Johnston, the poolside setting inspired by iconic lifestyle photographer Slim Aarons came alive as our talent showcased bold looks from Deconduarte and L’IDEE, and Jets Australia and Hansen & Gretel courtesy of David Jones, seamlessly blending fashion and lifestyle into a dreamlike scene.

LEditor’s etter

September flew by in a blur, and October is already bringing good energy. Warmer days, fresh air, and a little spring fever (or hayfever) are the perfect excuse to start planning for the season, whether it be a weekend getaway, holiday escapes, or just a few moments of poolside zen.

This past month was jam-packed. From an overnight stay at Palm Beach’s Cheshire Cat with my partner Will, to soaking up city views from Queen’s Wharf’s Sky Deck, it’s been non-stop. I even managed to squeeze in a quick Sydney work trip to meet with clients. My new favourite find? Milquetoast, tucked away in a CBD laneway. Shout out to Longwang, Ruby My Dear, FOSH, Soko Rooftop, and the newly-opened Thomas’ in Teneriffe for keeping me well-fed, with toasted sandwiches that slap!

Brisbane is absolutely buzzing right now, with new restaurants and bars opening everywhere. The Southside’s newest addition, Macgregor Homemaker, is the perfect place to refresh your home for the season, check it out on page 12. Love is also in the air with our weddings feature, just in time for anyone, like me, planning their big day. Watching from afar fashion week runways from our screens, we’ve got the season’s best looks covered on pages 18 & 19.

Here’s to a season full of style, celebrations, and everything in between. Dive in, enjoy the issue, and share it with a friend.

It’s big. It’s bold. And it’s here. Brisbane’s newest design and homemaker hub, Macgregor Homemaker, has officially opened its doors. And what better way to celebrate this premium retail destination than by taking our latest cover shoot to one of the most amazing properties on the Sunshine Coast?

Styled to perfection with furnishings from Domayne, a crown jewel of Macgregor Homemaker, the space (and the shoot) embodied luxury. It was all about capturing the essence of la dolce vita – the good life.

Against the backdrop of a breathtaking estate, Domayne’s pieces transformed the alfresco area into a resort-like space that you would never want to leave. Each detail was selected to create that carefree spring-summer charm, where sun-soaked days melt into balmy nights, blurring the line between indoor and outdoor.

It’s this very laid-back luxe that is reflected in the offerings of the new centre.

Macgregor Homemaker boasts Brisbane’s first Domayne on the southside, a much-anticipated arrival after 12 years. It’s joined by big brands like Harvey Norman, Spotlight, Pillow Talk, Adairs, Bed Bath N’ Table, Forty Winks, Kitchen Warehouse, Carpet Call, and Stellarossa Café, creating a one-stop lifestyle destination.

Macgregor Homemaker’s presence on Kessels Road took over five years to come to life. The project employed up to 200 tradespeople at a time. It’s a feat of collaboration between Leffler Simes, ADCO, Transact Capital, and Norman Global Projects.

The attention to detail has elevated this beyond a typical retail experience and we believe it is a destination centre to discover inspiring, accessible lifestyle trends.

And what an experience it is. As you

step out of the carpark, the sleek lifts transport you seamlessly into the centre, bathing you in bright, airy lighting that sets the tone for an amazing shopping experience where you’ll be surrounded by the finest amenities.

The architecture itself, with its geometric motifs, coppery tones, and intricate feature ceiling, is just as stunning as the brands it houses. It also features OKATECH glass resourced and procured from Germany that creates a unique lighting feature.

At Harvey Norman alone you can shop the latest in homewares and design, covering every aspect of your home, from outdoor living to smart electrical solutions, high-end kitchens, luxurious bathrooms, exquisite homewares, and premium flooring. Everything you need to fit out your dream home, all in one destination.

The centre is as sustainable as it is stylish, too. Solar panels power the lighting and air conditioning, while rainwater capture helps irrigate the native gardens.

Speaking of lighting, Macgregor Homemaker’s human-centric lighting design, tailored by specialists, adapts throughout the day.

With construction beginning in early 2022, Macgregor Homemaker is more than just another mall – it’s a symbol of growth and ambition for Brisbane’s southside. Staff work across the centre, trading seven days a week, boosting the local community in more ways than one.

As for shoppers? Expect a visual and tactile delight at every turn. Whether you’re hunting for toptier kitchen appliances, cookware, and tableware at Kitchen Warehouse, layering your home in comfort from Bed Bath N’ Table, or seeking style inspiration at Adairs, Macgregor Homemaker is designed to be the ultimate home shopping experience.

WELLNESS REACHES NEW HEIGHTS

What happens when you mix one of Australia’s most luxurious medispas with one of the most famous wellness brands in the world? An Australianfirst health and wellness experience that will thrill attendees.

Held over four days at two of Queensland’s most premium destinations – The Calile Hotel and The Star Brisbane – renowned medispa and wellness brand KAILO is teaming up with Gwyneth Paltrow’s goop to deliver an unprecedented wellness experience right here in Brisbane. Following the groundbreaking success of the KAILO Wellness Summit in 2022, the 2025 KAILO Summit is set to be a celebration of health, spirituality, and personal growth, with curated elements by goop.

For Senior Editor at goop Kelly Martin, the collaboration was a perfect alignment. “Connection, curiosity, and the pursuit of wellbeing are all such a deep part of goop’s DNA, and KAILO’s too,” she says. “I’m so ready for the insights that come out of the experts and thought leaders on the panel we’ve curated for the event.”

So, what’s in store for ticket holders?

Kicking off on 1 May, 2025 at the Star Brisbane, the KAILO Summit commences with a dynamic lineup of national and global experts diving

into a broad range of hot topics like sexual health, human connection, and diversity. Attendees can expect a goop-curated goodie bag valued at more than $500 each, including a handful of goop-endorsed products. If that’s (somehow) not enough to entice you, there’s more: on 2 May, the festivities continue at the Live Boldly Brunch at The Calile Hotel, which will feature a delicious menu designed by goop and hosted by the inspiring Sarah Grynberg – mindset coach, author, and host of A Life Of Greatness podcast. Following this is a live event by David The Medium, before the summit wraps up with the two-day Rest & Reset Retreat at The Calile Hotel, offering a range of programs and sessions designed to recharge your health and wellbeing.

“What goop has helped to do is bring previously taboo topics to the mainstream, which is why we launched the KAILO Summit,” says Kath Merlo, Co-Founder of KAILO Wellness Medispa. “We want to encourage difficult conversations and inspire people to ask the hard questions, take better control of their health, and educate themselves.”

KAILO CO-FOUNDERS KATH MERLO AND KRISTY MORRIS

With a stacked panel of industry leaders and an exciting lineup of events, the 2025 KAILO Summit is set to be unmissable. And while Ms Paltrow herself won’t be in attendance, there are plenty of familiar faces making the journey to Brisbane to share their unique insights and expertise. Here’s a sneak peek of what to expect.

DAVID THE MEDIUM Psychic Clairvoyant and Spiritual Medium

“As a medium I have the ability to communicate with our loved ones who have crossed over and pass on messages of proof, support, validation and clarity from the Afterlife. Being a psychic means I have the ability to foresee and predict future timelines and events. Attendees will be able to witness first-hand the connection with Spirit and the Afterlife as I conduct readings and pass on messages to members of the audience at random.”

CHANTELLE OTTEN Psycho-Sexologist and Relationship Expert

“My focus will be on all the fun things – sex, enhancing sexual health, and building stronger relationships. I’ll be diving into how self-esteem and confidence play a huge role in our sexual experiences and how we connect with others. Communication is also a big one; it’s the foundation of intimacy. I’ll be sharing tips on how to talk openly about desires, boundaries, and everything in between.”

DR SARAH JANE Award-winning Chiropractor and Counsellor, Creator of healing modality, Spinal Energetic

“I’m excited to dive into the interconnectedness of body, mind, and energy. My main talking points will focus on how we can better understand the innate intelligence within ourselves and how our physical and emotional bodies are linked. Our bodies hold onto experiences, emotions, and memories, so when we address one layer – be it physical or emotional – we often unlock the other. The mind and body connection can be incredibly powerful.”

DR ADEEL KHAN Stem Cell Therapy and Longevity Specialist

“My talk will be focused on the latest advancements in stem cell and gene therapies and how they can be used to potentially reverse the ageing process. I will delve into the future of regenerative medicine, discussing how these therapies can repair and regenerate organs and muscles, enabling us to potentially live longer.”

POV: SYDNEY CLIENT TRIP

with Style Media Director Tracy Sinclair

A whirlwind three days in Sydney saw Style’s Director, Tracy Sinclair, and Style Magazine’s Editor, Kiri Johnston, dashing to PR meet and greets, catching up with agency clients, and in between, squeezing in a bit of shopping and eating alot of falafel.

WHERE WE STAYED: Hotel Morris in Haymarket, Sydney, is a stunning blend of Italian Renaissance architecture and modern Australian design. Both a boutique hotel and an evocative bar, it offers a unique atmosphere of intrigue and charm, with moody lighting and densely hung artwork setting the tone. The Italian Eggs Benedict are the best I’ve ever tasted—rich, flavourful, and perfectly balanced. If they’re not on the menu, it’s worth asking the chef nicely to whip them up. Hotel Morris is sexy, cool and different to the usual corporate travel options. www.barmorris.com.au

WHERE WE ATE: When you’re moving from place to place, it’s tempting to grab fast food, but travelling with a vegetarian narrows the choice. Or does it? Jimmy’s Falafels (another incredible Merivale offering), was our go-to. In the heart of the CBD, it’s super popular and bustling with city workers. You can eat in, or grab and go. We loved the pitas – a tasty and healthy lunch when you’re on the move. WHERE WE SHOPPED: Song for the Mute is also my latest obsession. This is street style, beautifully, or rather, perfectly done. The SFTM x Adidas 004 collab is lit. The colour combo, the detail … we had to indulge. The boys in store gave us a sneak peek of what’s coming through and it is insane! So, watch this space sneaker fiends. www. songforthemute Maison Essentiele in Oxford Streets’ designer precinct is a gem of a find. We loved the leather and suede oversized bags from NZ designer Georgia Jay. Currently in wishlist. www. maisonessentiele, www.georgiajay.com

A hike spanning four days, travel a total of 60km by foot, pack free. Yep, that’s right! Leave your load to the friendly team who will also nourish you with delicious gourmet meals and guide you to unique eco camps each night. Prepare to be greeted by rewarding challenges and pictureworthy views as you set out along the dramatic landscape with a welcome touch of luxury.

Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk

If you’re a bit of a history nut, this hike is for you. Just two hours south of Brisbane, walk on an ancient volcano, hike through a World Heritage rainforest and bathe in the natural pools on the 54km Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk. Beginning at O’Reiley’s Rainforest Retreat, this two to three-day hike spans two national parks (Lamington and Springbrook) into NSW where you will be spoilt with views of Mt Warning, plummetting waterfalls and experience the incredible Antarctic Beech rainforests, a relic from Gondwana.

Cooloola Great Walk

After a slightly longer trek? Head up north to discover Cooloola Great Walk, a 102km hike that hugs the coastline between Noosa North Shore and Rainbow Bay. A fiveday hike, trail through otherworldly landscapes. From the majestic Carlow Sand Blow, the Great Sandy National Park’s rainforests and heath-clad plains to coastal woodland and golden stretches of sandy beaches, take a city break and reset amongst nature. Spend your days soaking in perpetual views and your evenings recuperating in the four camps along the way.

K’gari (Fraser Island) Great Walk

Right on our doorstep lives the world’s largest sand island - what better way to explore the wonder than by foot? K’gari (Fraser Island) Great Walk is 90km in its entirety, however, can be broken into shorter trips if you lack the time (or stamina). Through World Heritage-listed wilderness, experience nature in its rawest form. Marvel at the rainforests, clear lakes, and vast dunes and witness the purest dingo population in Australia whilst learning about the island’s rich history along the way. Whether you’re after a challenge or prefer a little luxury, K’gari walking tours offer three walks to choose from: Pack-free, luxury and adventure.

Carnarvon Great Walk

Eight hours north-west of Brisbane (inland from Hervey Bay), Queensland’s very own Grand Canyon lives, boasting scenic hiking trails weaving through it. An outback oasis, Carnarvon Great Walk is unlike something many of us have seen before, and trust us, it’s worth the journey. Home to many historic Indigenous sites to marvel along the way, take either the 10km or 87km trail and admire the wonder that is nature. With strong ties to the area’s Indigenous roots, absorb the rich history that seeps through the deep gorges it’s known by, left from thousands of years of water erosion.

POSTCARDS FROM POPPY

AUSTRALIAN FASHION DESIGNER POPPY LISSIMAN, KNOWN FOR HER EPONYMOUS BRAND OF STRIKING AND FUN ACCESSORIES, HAS CALLED TOKYO HOME FOR JUST OVER TWO YEARS. BEFORE HER RETURN TO LIFE DOWN UNDER, SHE SHARES HER INSIDER TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR NEXT VISIT TO JAPAN, OFFERING A GLIMPSE INTO THE CITY’S BEST-KEPT SECRETS AND MUST-VISIT SPOTS

INTERVIEW NATALIE MCGOWAN

1. Tourism in Tokyo is absolutely heaving right now, so book everything in advance. Booking restaurants or experiences in Japan sometimes takes work, so if you get stuck, ask your hotel if they can help.

2. Day trips are great. I’d stay longer in Tokyo and do some day trips to some of the lesser-known villages, which are in more need of tourism than Kyoto or Osaka. I’d recommend just about anywhere on the Izu Peninsular (about three hours south of Tokyo) for beaches, kooky 80s hotels, hiking, camping, surfing, onsens, and weird museums.

3. In winter, Nozawa Onsen is a million times better than Niseko, which is basically a mini Australia. Nozawa is only 1.5 hours from Tokyo and it’s a very traditional village built on natural hot springs, which are free to use. You don’t need a car to get around and everything is within walking distance.

4. If you’re shopping, bring your passport with you for tax back on your purchases. Tokyo is a great place to pick up genuine designer pieces. Japanese fashion brands such as COMME des GARÇONS and Issey Miyake are almost half the price of what they are outside of Japan.

5. Get a Suica card for getting around. You can load it onto your phone’s wallet. It’s basically like a GoCard, which you can use on the train, bus, and most taxis.

6. Convenience stores are life. There are three main chains: FamilyMart (or Famima), 7-Eleven, and Lawson. All locals have a favourite – I’m a Famima girl. Cheap and healthy meals are available at all the convenience stores. They also all have ATMs, seating areas, and rubbish bins, which is very handy since there are very few bins on the streets. Plus, eating on the street is frowned upon, so convenience stores are a great place for a cheap bite on the go.

BUILDING WITH INTEGRITY

In Queensland’s competitive construction landscape, Ashley Cooper Construction has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past decade to become one of Brisbane’s most in-demand builders.

Founded by Luke Ashley-Cooper in 2014, the company has quickly gained recognition for its commitment to delivering exceptional projects ranging from hospitality and tourism redevelopments to medical facilities and school redevelopments.

The inspiration behind Ashley Cooper Construction came from Luke’s experience as a subcontractor, where he felt that larger businesses often showed a disregard for their employees and subcontractors.

“I saw a big lack of companies ‘doing the right thing’ by people and subbies” explains Luke. “I knew there must be a way to deliver these high-quality projects while being a decent person to everyone involved.”

clinic (Oapl in Slacks Creek), as well as heritage-conscious refurbishments of Churchie’s Jackson Building and Somerville House’s Fewings Building.

“We’re just getting started”
- LUKE ASHLEY-COOPER

Asked about his favourite project, Luke jokes that choosing only one is like “choosing your favourite child… there’s too many to say.” Some highlights he mentions are the recent refurbishment of the heritage-listed Naldham House in the Brisbane CBD, the Hervey Bay Boat Club refurbishment, the Carina Leagues Club major development and the Manly Harbour Boat Club expansion, along with Club Helensvale and Sandhills Sports Club.

“Every project is different and has its own level of complexities,” says Luke. “We pride ourselves on working closely with the client to make sure their business can operate as smoothly and effectively as possible while we bring their project to life.”

The team’s capabilities range across the hospitality, commercial, and education sectors, including ground-up builds of Australia biggest prosthetics and orthotics

In 2021, the company celebrated its first Master Builders award, and in the past four years has won an impressive twelve awards across eight categories. Luke attributes this success to ACC’s focus on attention to detail, as well as a commitment to thoughtful team expansion. Instead of rushing to grow, Luke has prioritised building a cohesive team aligned with the company’s core values, ensuring that as project demands increase, the ACC workforce is ready. From the outset, Luke adopted a simple guiding principle for the team: leave egos at the door.

With a focus on a collaborative work environment, the business was recently included in The Australian Best Places to Work in 2024 list, specifically commending Ashley Cooper Construction for being one of the best Australian businesses for women to work at. “Our work can be hard, but our approach is straightforward –we work together to get it done and give team members the space to grow and develop in their career paths,” Luke explains.

With completed projects ranging from Club Helensvale in the Gold Coast to The Buffs Club in Mt Isa, Luke aims to continue expanding the team’s portfolio throughout Australia.

SYNERGETIC TENDENCIES

Artist and gallery founder Kerry Armstrong’s odyssey of self-discovery.

Tucked away on 20 acres in Harkaway, Victoria, Kerry Armstrong’s world is a blend of colour, music, and movement. This self-taught Abstract Expressionist and Gallery Founder/ Director of The Studio Gallery Group has broken the boundary between art and life, weaving her passions into every brushstroke.

Kerry’s journey as an artist began 12 years ago, sparked by a life-altering diagnosis –a brain tumour that prompted her to reevaluate her priorities. Leaving behind a successful corporate career, she surrendered to her creative instincts, embracing the uncertainty and freedom of artistic expression.

“I never plan a work or think about the end result,” Kerry says. “Music plays an enormous part in my flow… when I’m ‘on’ I paint very quickly, so I need a great deal of materials in store to potentially dance with on that day.” The sounds of Pavarotti fill her studio space, so you can imagine the feeling of creative energy that surrounds her and her paintings.

Kerry is known to merge colour, sound, and movement into a singular, intuitive language. Her process is spontaneous, guided by emotional resonance rather than deliberate intention. “Spontaneity always wins with me, I’m not looking for a balance, the magic evaporates if examined too closely,” she says.

Through her art, Kerry captures “episodic glimpses” of her life – fragments of experience, emotion, and memory. Her series Paddocks for Ponies eerily prefigured her current life on an equestrian property even though it was created five years ago. “I feel, see, and experience glimpses of my life almost in cutouts when painting. Sometimes even my sense of smell is aroused to stir deep childhood memories.

It’s a wonderful experience and I’m very grateful to finally understand myself a little better through this process,” Kerry says.

When reflecting on her finished pieces, Kerry experiences an “otherness” – a sense of detachment and connection. “I love spending time with them and listening to the stories I feel they tell,” she says.

As Kerry looks to the future, she’s eager to explore ceramics and continue allowing her art to evolve organically. And when she is in a non-painting mode, Kerry attends to her business, Studio Gallery Group – now five galleries in three states of Australia, including one here in Brisbane.

For viewers of her work, Kerry is after just one thing; “I ideally want them to ‘feel’ something, it’s as simple as that. Expressionism is all about the dialogue with oneself, I never mind people asking for the meaning of a work, but my favourite experience is to hear how it affects them.”

“RELEVANCE IN THE ART WORLD TO ME IS BEING WIDELY COLLECTED AND APPRECIATED, ALONG WITH THE SELFGROWTH THAT COMES WITH BEING AN ARTIST, THERE’S NOTHING THAT MAKES ME FEEL SO GRATEFUL IN LIFE.”

7D Wandoo St, Fortitude Valley

Banding together for a great cause, local personalities create art with heart (and cup size) for the return of a mid-2000s exhibition written in Brisbane history.

This October, some of Australia’s most celebrated stars are coming together for a cause that blends art, fashion, and charity. Returning to Toowong Village after 20 years, Bras By The Stars is a showcase of bespoke bras designed and decorated by beloved Brisbane celebs from the entertainment, sports, and media worlds. The purpose of this art décolletage? To raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research and patient care through The Wesley Hospital Choices Cancer Support Centre.

Founded in 1998, Wesley Choices was established by then Brisbane Broncos captain, now coach, Kevin Walters in honour of his late wife Kim. Originally acting as a support service for women battling breast cancer – today the program provides support to both men and women battling

all cancer, focusing on improving their quality of life. Two familiar faces of the campaign are Channel 9’s Melissa Downes and Channel 10’s The Project host Sarah Harris, returning after their involvement in the original event in 2004. Joining them are “Madame Butterfly” Susie O’Neill, Brisbane Broncos’ Kevin and Billy Walters, author Trent Dalton, podcast duo Lise and Sarah, internet personality Christian Hull, chef Alastair McLeod, Lady Mayoress Nina Schrinner, and ABC Brisbane’s Kat Feeney. Renewing their support 20 years later – Triumph Lingerie is once again a key partner providing the bras for design, having done so on the first occasion. To catch a glimpse of masterpieces IRL, visit the free exhibition at Toowong Village, running for the entire month of October. (UNDER)WEARABLE ART

The Pawpaw Effect

Meet Giorgina Venzin, the visionary Owner and Managing Director of Venzin Group, revolutionising Brisbane’s hospitality scene with her innovative approach and commitment to community. 12 years ago, a cafe called Pawpaw opened in the back room of an existing restaurant in Woolloongabba. Fast forward to today, and Venzin’s first hospitality venture is now a Brisbane institution that boasts an impressive trophy cabinet – and is one of the many jewels now in Venzin’s portfolio. From transforming Brisbane’s culinary landscape to conjuring viral food moments (rainbow lattes, anyone?), Giorgina’s passion for people and infectious spirit have earned her a spot as the one of city’s most influential hospitality leaders.

INTERVIEW CHLOE HILL

Hi Giorgina, thanks for speaking with us today. The Venzin Group is a force in the Brisbane hospitality scene. What inspired you to dive into the world of hospitality I’ve always wanted to work with people. I have a degree in event management and had my sights set on moving to New York. However, after university and some travelling, I decided to stay in Brisbane and take advantage of the opportunities here. Looking back, what’s been the biggest pinchme moment of your career so far Opening Darvella & Melrose during COVID was a huge moment for me. It was a challenging time, and taking that leap felt scary, but it paid off and really boosted my confidence! Conversely, what has been your biggest learning moment There have been many! COVID taught me a lot, especially when I went back to study online during lockdown. I took a leadership course at Columbia University, which equipped me with valuable tools to lead more effectively and upskill my team. Each of your venues has a unique identity. Can you share your process for conceptualising each venue lean more toward the creative side! I typically find a location first and work backward. For example, when Citron became available, we had several concepts in mind before it evolved into what it is today. With Piggyback, we considered what the area needed – like the rainbow coffee concept. We always think about the location, the local community, and how we can introduce something that draws people in. T here’s a strong sense of community at your venues. How do you foster this feeling of belonging for your staff and customers My businesses are designed for my staff and customers. It’s crucial for me to create an environment where the team enjoys working. This positivity translates to the customer experience –happy staff provide happy service, making customers

feel relaxed, welcomed, and at home. What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the Brisbane hospitality scene since you started Brisbane has experienced a significant foodie and boutique hotel boom, which I love! There’s so much development happening, making our city one to be proud of. Now, visitors from interstate have numerous options, plus we’re just a two-hour drive from Noosa or Byron Bay! Your venues have had many viral food and drink moments – the strawberry croissants at Darvella, matcha floats at Pawpaw Café, and rainbow lattes at Piggyback. How do you stay ahead of the curve to deliver memorable dining experiences It’s all about continuous learning! I’m currently trying to master TikTok to see what people love online, both here and abroad, so we can create exciting offerings at our venues. Finally, what’s cooking behind the scenes at Venzin Group No new projects just yet, but Citron recently launched the Citron Freeze – it’s the ultimate summer drink to enjoy in the Bayside breeze!

“We always think about the location, the local community, and how we can introduce something that draws people in.”

FLAVOUR FUSION

If you’re dining with dietaries, you know the drill: dining out often means settling for a grilled chicken salad. But guess what? This new foodie hotspot in the CBD has just made your life a whole lot easier, packed with delicious food that caters to all dietary requirements.

Blink and you might miss Longwang – it’s tucked away between two highrises in the CBD, surrounded by lush greenery. The modern yet industrial design spans two-and-a-half levels, creating a peaceful oasis from the hustle and bustle of Edward Street. The calm ambience paired with the warm and friendly staff made for an unforgettable dining experience.

As I settled into a cosy booth on the second level, I marvelled at the narrow space between two brick walls, just three-and-a-half metres apart. Longwang has cleverly utilised its space to offer a unique dining experience.

My lunchtime started with a fabulous cocktail: the Purple Dynasty. This vibrant concoction of Broker’s Gin, elderflower, lavender, falernum, rhubarb, dragonfruit, and citrus is not just a treat for the eyes, but also a perfect match for the dishes with a bit of heat. But more on that soon.

As a gluten-free girlie, finding food that I can actually enjoy can be a challenge, but Longwang blew me away. The starters were a revelation. The kingfish sashimi, dressed with blackened chilli and sweet pickled fennel, was fresh and tangy with a delightful crunch from puffed rice. And the crispy squid,

seasoned with fragrant tom yum salt, was light and irresistible. I usually miss out on crispy delights being gluten-free, but this squid was a game-changer.

For mains, we followed the staff’s recommendations. The kung pao bug tail (more like kung wow), was a spicy delight with a hit of Sichuan pepper and crunchy cashews. It paired beautifully with my Purple Dynasty cocktail, offering a refreshing counterpoint to the heat. The Panang curry with cauliflower was another standout, with its crispy cauliflower and tangy pickled baby corn. Then, there was the tea-smoked duck with coconut yuzu plum sauce. This dish was so extraordinary that it’s the main reason I’m already planning my next visit.

Even with a full stomach, I couldn’t resist the mango pudding topped with yuzu sorbet and coconut foam – a creamy, tropical explosion of flavours.

Longwang is a hidden gem with phenomenal options for all dietary requirements (not just gluten-free!) and a menu that caters to every palate. If you haven’t been yet, you’re missing out. It’s definitely one of the hottest new spots in Brisbane!

THE STYLE FILES

Yasmeen from Yasmeen Cathy Interiors believes every home has a story to tell. Here, she shares how she brought this home’s unique narrative to life, drawing inspiration from different cultures.

What was your inspiration for styling this property The inspiration for this property was drawn from our client’s love of both French and Vietnamese styles, with Hoi An serving as a central influence. We wanted the space to evoke the charm and textures of this ancient town while incorporating the sophistication of French design. The client’s request to incorporate personal family heirlooms, like their antique dining table and a vintage map of Singapore, was another core influence. These pieces brought a sense of history and storytelling, adding layers of personal meaning to the design. Talk me through the process The design process began with a deep dive into who our clients are and what they cherish. We realised they were drawn to natural materials and bold, peacockinspired colours like emerald greens, sapphire blues, and golden hues, which became integral to the aesthetic. To bring their vision to life, we sourced fabrics and materials with strong influences from France and Vietnam. Lantern lighting played a significant role, adding that soft, ambient glow that the clients loved. What was your favourite part of styling this home Watching the clients with their daughter sitting on the balcony. They were so proud of the space we had created and excited for the adventures that were to come, exploring the area and making memories in their new home. How did the features of the property influence your choices The property itself, a contemporary townhouse with breathtaking city views, informed many of our design choices. The modern architecture needed balance, so we used colour and materials to soften the lines and add depth. This home became a fusion of cultural influences, personal history, and contemporary design – a reflection of the client’s unique story and a space that will inspire for years to come.

HIGH-END LUXURY

We chatted with interior designer Christopher of Thomas & Alexander Interiors to get the lowdown on how he creates beautifully styled, luxurious homes.

How would you define your design style

I have no personal design style, but what I can tell you is that my work is designed to suit my clients’ personalities and their particular properties. Each project is well-curated, high-end, luxurious, and of unsurpassed quality. It takes all these components to achieve an exceptional design. From concepts to finished product, what is your creative process

This process cannot begin until both the client and I share a common goal and are in alignment. Once this is established, the creative process will vary. It can come from a choice of a rug that defines the room, a wallpaper, or something the client has. Then, you build from there. What role does client collaboration play in your design process It is the most important role, and without it, a professional designer can’t produce the right and desired outcome. Without a healthy collaboration and a healthy

respect for each other, the project will not work. I refer to it as a healthy pushand-pull dynamic, which always ends up with an outcome that surpasses my clients’ expectations. What is your point of difference First and foremost, an uncompromisingly high standard of design and manufacturing of all products and schemes, from bathrooms and kitchens to furnishings. Also, my ability to work on commercial and high-end residential projects, whether it be contemporary design or classic, or any particular style that is befitting to the architecture and my client’s vision. How do you ensure your designs are both innovative and timeless By not being a slave to high fashion which dates nearly as fast as it arrives. I insist on exceptional design and no fads to speak of. When you mix luxury and quality, with that intangible flair and creativity, it just happens.

Sew in love

Bespoke bridal designs hand-tailored to perfection in a Brisbane atelier, The Bridehouse Bulimba is for brides seeking modern sophistication and classic elegance.

It took fashion designer Gabrielle Spencer searching for her own wedding dress to realise she wanted to be a bridal designer. “It was proving impossible to find a gown that suited me,” she recalls. “I’d always been sensitive to fine textiles and I could find nothing that combined silhouette, fabric, and accessibility.”

That moment sparked a journey that’s now spanned 12 years. Mentored by awardwinning designer Anne Bertossi, Gabrielle now leads The Bridehouse Bulimba as director and head designer, following in her mentor’s footsteps.

The inside of The Bridehouse Bulimba is pretty much a look inside Gabrielle’s mind: billowing linen curtains, a luxurious velvet sofa, the hum of sewing machines, wedding dresses, french lace, flower crowns, silk ribbons, books, magazines… all of which are things that fuel Gabrielle’s creativity.

With a love for empowering women in fine fabrics and every shade of white from ivory to snow, Gabrielle’s expertise lies in creating elegant and simple designs that reveal the essence of each bride. Drawing inspiration from classic couturiers like Gabrielle Chanel, Paul Poiret, Madeleine Vionett, and Jeanne Lanvin, her ultimate goal is to reflect each bride’s personality in her work, while remaining true to her own style.

“My role as a designer is to find the

right white for each bride and adapt it to her personality and the grain of her skin, and associate it with fabrics that unveil her splendour,” she says.

“My designs unveil the bride’s personality through pleats, drapes, and sprays, and step away from fads. They have the grace of the 30s, the chic of the 50s, or the bohemian of the 70s.”

Offering custom and custom couture, everything at The Bridehouse Bulimba is expertly crafted in-house by the talented team of ateliers – a rare and treasured practice Gabrielle is deeply committed to preserving. This hands-on approach and dedication to craftsmanship allow her and her team to ensure every gown is perfect and tailored to fit the bride like a second skin. After all, “There is only one way to wear a beautiful dress: to forget you are wearing one,” Gabrielle says.

In addition, the in-house team is able to extend their expertise in gown alterations to outside purchases or heirlooms.

Looking to the future, The Bridehouse is embracing a new design era and recreating and expanding their present collections, along with the gradual introduction of modern collections from prominent overseas designers. With an eye for innovation and a heart for tradition, Gabrielle invites brides to discover their something new at The Bridehouse.

“My strongest advice: choose classic and elegant over flashy and gaudy. Your face is the most important feature on your wedding day. Make it shine.”

– GABRIELLE SPENCER, THE BRIDEHOUSE BULIMBA

PUT A RING ON IT

Your wedding band will be with you every day, so it’s important to get it right. Beyond being a piece of jewellery, it’s a lasting symbol of your love and commitment to your partner. So, what should you consider when choosing your ring? “Wearability and durability are key,” explains Drew Brown, Founder of BrownHaus, a bespoke jewellery brand specialising in truly exquisite pieces. “Couples should also consider how the band pairs with their engagement ring in terms of style and fit.
