editor’s NOTE H

oly moly, what a time! As I write this, we’re in the midst of what is arguably the most challenging period in our history — the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s been a stressful time and like many, I’ve been a bit of an emotional wreck. I sincerely hope that you, your family, colleagues, friends and – well everyone near and dear to you really – are okay, and trying to stay positive and healthy. As we’ve seen all over the media, we really are in this together. This virus has not discriminated. I really don’t think there is anyone who hasn’t been or won’t be affected financially or emotionally by this catastrophe, including our own little Style family. So, we’ve gotta ride this out. We will all come out the other side of it but it’s going to take adaptability, empathy, patience, and a whole lot of generosity and care toward each other. Particularly for those who are really doing it tough. Let’s look for the positive. Be grateful for what we do have. Keep an eye out for each other and offer to help. Look after our mental and physical health. Support and reassure our children, no matter their age. And call our loved ones. Things will be okay. You never know – often the most difficult experiences result in life-changing evolution and awakening. And, as my parents always used to say, “When you wake up, everything will be better in the morning.” Wishing you health and resilience from myself, my business partner Paul Johnston and the Style family. @styletracy

coronavirus WAY WE WORK? Does working from home actually work? Courtney Frank discusses.

T

o say the last few weeks have been uncertain would be an understatement. As countries all over the world shut their borders and declare states of emergency, it’s clear that the coronavirus (COVID-19) has ignited a sense of uncertainty throughout society. And as normal rules for business and social interactions continue to change on the daily, coronavirus is forcing millions of people all over the world to re-evaluate their current workplace strategy. It seems we may have reached a crossroads as a society – one that is in favour of working from home. This forced experiment in working remotely is one that depends on many different individual circumstances. So, even though global companies such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Twitter were among the first to have their employees working from

home, here in Australia, it’s embedded in our ‘Aussie battler’ nature to just keep calm and carry on. Which is all well and good, so long as you keep socially distant (and if you’re even able to!). The things we will come to learn in the next few months will be pivotal in how we choose to conduct work in the future. In the age of innovation, remote working gives us a chance to achieve the ultimate work-life balance. In fact, companies who allow remote work have 25% less employee turnover than those that don’t (Owl Labs). Statistics also show that 76% of workers would be more willing to stay with their current employer if they could work more flexible hours (FlexJobs). The fact is, long before this global pandemic hit, the rate of people working from home was already rising. Over the past few weeks (and no doubt into the next APRIL 2020

few months), our society will continue to change. And it’s likely that post-coronavirus workplaces may entertain the idea of working remotely, where they may have not before. Of course, this is all dependent on the success of this forced experiment in autonomy. Naturally, the same can’t be said for everyone. There are many essential service industries that keep our country operating who don’t have the option to work from home. Interestingly though, the innovation has now started to filter through to some of these occupations. For example, some GPs now offer the option to order your recurring prescriptions online – eliminating the need for any face-to-face contact – all from the comfort of your couch. So, it begs the question, where will working from home take us in a post-isolation world? I guess only time will tell.

Two working mothers who turned their lifelong passion for fashion and travel into a new walk of life. WORDS BY FIONA WILLIAMS

I

n 2015, best friends and business partners, Emily Hall and Leticia Gaskell, launched their fun and effortless shoes and accessories brand, El Zapato. You may recognise Leticia as one of Westfield Chermside’s stylists, and Emily from speaking about her incredible life story at many events around Brisbane, including Find Your Fierce. There’s no doubt this dedicated duo bring a world of expertise and excitement to their brand, flowing onto the footwear of women all around Brisbane and beyond. “Before launching the label, we both worked full time. Leticia in fashion and media and myself in boutique travel. The biggest leap of faith has been concentrating full time on the business whilst still raising our kids,” says Emily. Styling the latest trends and preparing travel plans daily, the pair realised there was a gap in the market for good quality, affordable and fashionable flat footwear. “We wanted people to have the option to look further than just mainstream stores or designers,” says Leticia. But it wasn’t until Leticia’s honeymoon that she had the opportunity to arrange a few pairs of samples and wear them back in Brisbane. “We had so many comments from friends and family, so we took a gamble and started selling some!” says Leticia. “No way did we think it would take off and we would be where we are today. It really has been a fun journey,” Emily smiles. Designing, running a business and maneuvering motherhood is certainly no easy

CRUSH

joey griffiths This month, it’s a blue crush. Photographer Joey Griffiths jumped the shore from the Sunshine Coast to Bali and has been chasing waves ever since. Recently making a name for himself by capturing epic shots of professional surfers and locals alike, Joey’s snaps have made it onto billboards and magazine spreads for Stab Magazine, Billabong, Oakley and more. Meet the guy hanging ten behind the camera. @ JOE Y_ G R I F F I T HS

What’s the best way to describe your occupation? That’s a tough one! Simply, photographer, but I hustle on the side and look after social media and online presence for a restaurant group here in Bali.

How’d you end up in Bali? I had been to Bali a few times and loved it. Then, in early 2016 I deferred from uni and figured I had enough money to live out here for maybe four months. Fast forward four years and this is definitely where I now call home.

What was the original plan? I was studying to become a high school geography and history teacher!

Describe to us your normal day… Fortunately, I don’t have a “normal” day often. On surf jobs we usually skip out of Bali to surrounding islands, so there’s a bit of prep before getting to the job. Are we flying? Or, packing a beat-up van full of boards and surfers and 10

|

using Indonesia’s connecting ferry system to get somewhere? It can be quite a mission! With weddings or a restaurant shoot there are less variables. One day we’re swimming around crystal blue waters in North Sumatra and the next working with a chef back in Bali or hanging out with a couple documenting their wedding.

What makes the perfect surf shot? Weather and light play a huge part, then waves and location. I don’t think I’ve gotten the perfect shot yet but some I’m certainly proud of.

How many photos would you take to get the winning shot? I have swum out with a friend on sunset, had one wave before dark and nailed something and then other times, thousands.

Bragging rights approved, what’s been your greatest achievement? I’m unsure if I have anything worth really bragging about! I once hit a full court shot in basketball? STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

There’s gotta be something... For real, probably having my shot of Jack Freestone getting barreled in Sumbawa published on a Billabong billboard! Or, completely random – being published in Vogue Living.

Give us your best surfer slang sentence! “Was a coupl’a drainers on low, aye” or “Nah, I’m not going to party this trip, just surf, hey” – always a lie!

What’s next? The surf season and wedding season are just around the corner, so will be balancing those two as best as possible. At the same time, two friends and I are starting a little accommodation project here in Bali, so that should keep us busy for the next year or so.

Q&A @genevavanderzeil COLLECTIVEGEN.COM

Where is a good place to start? I really like to think about a room from bottom to top and usually start with the floors, such as a rug. I then think about how to improve the lighting, either by updating curtains and blinds or adding some nice lamps or pendants. What are some easy seasonal swaps that can make your home more autumnal? During the cooler months I’m all about a room with lots of texture such as cushions, throws and rugs, that are soft and make for a welcoming space.

Wolfe & Ordnance Marle Ingrid Dress $330

When looking for an investment piece for the hero of your room, what do you look for? Big furniture pieces are always statement-making in a room, so for me they need to be really great quality and need to be adaptable so that they can evolve with your taste. What are some basic tips to style a bookcase? For me, it’s all about choosing a colour palette that guides all the different item choices, and then layering things up together.

How to come out the

other side in the green Give yourself and your back-pocket peace of mind using the three P’s, with help from Mortgage Choice finance expert, Jonathan Lee. BY JASMINE ROLFE

Let’s be honest. Navigating through these tricky times is not going to be easy. But there are a few simple steps you can take from home to get your plan down on paper and give yourself – and your back-pocket – some peace of mind.

PINCH

Mortgage Choice finance expert, Jonathan Lee, believes the past is the best indicator of the future, so put some time aside and have a look at what you’ve spent over the last 30 days. “This can be as easy as printing off your bank statement and highlighting unnecessary expenses. This is mostly to determine where your money is going, plug any holes and tighten up any excessive spending,” Jonathan says. Sorry premium YouTube account, you’ve gotta go. You can also suspend some of these expenses by simply emailing the company. 16

|

Many will be flexible during this period. Okay, now go grab a cuppa and do it in real time. See you soon!

PLAN

Now that we’ve determined what we can slice from our current spending it’s time to budget, budget, budget. Do you have one? If you’re figuratively shaking your head and recoiling at the word, maybe start off by calling it a spending plan (sounds a little less pointy). “It can be as easy as creating a simple spreadsheet (or use a cool budgeting App like Mint), enter headings such as rent/ mortgage, utilities, groceries, entertainment, subscriptions, fuel, car, health, insurance, home, clothes, kids, bank fees/credit card interest etc., and start entering them into the appropriate column with the date of the payment (so there’s no creeping up on you!),” Jonathan says. Also, look into your utility providers like STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

gas, electricity, phone and internet and ask if you’re receiving the best deal. You could save yourself hundreds of dollars, not only for now, but for the future.

PIVOT While this article is written with those of us fortunate enough to still be employed (in some capacity) in mind, we acknowledge that there are many members in the community who have lost their jobs or been stood down. The political landscape is changing every day, however there are financial benefits that should be explored if you find yourself without work. Head to servicesaustralia.gov.au to check your eligibility. While we may be distancing ourselves during this time, this does not mean we can’t support one another and offer little sparks of joy every day and manage our financial position as best we can.

A R T S A N D E N T E R TA I N M E N T

The 4-1-1 on

Six60

Beginning as humble mates at University in Dunedin, Six60 are now the kings of New Zealand music making history as the first NZ band to sell out Western Springs stadium, joining the ranks of David Bowie and The Rolling Stones. We caught up with bassist (and secret Aussie) Chris Mac to talk band life and how they once ended up in a ferry prison, writes Dinushka Gunasekara. How did Six60 happen? There were three guys living in 660 Castle Street who all grew up in families where you’d pick up the guitar and jam. The band didn’t start until they became friends with Eli, who was a bouncer at a gig and secretly a great drummer. They told the band performing they wanted to start their own band but needed a drummer, and the band lead them to Eli. What’s the craziest story that’s happened while touring? Tours are just filled with so many moments of either pure elation or total soul-destruction. I won’t tell you the circumstances but the end of this story is that a couple of us got arrested on a ferry going from Norway to Amsterdam and were put into a ferry prison cell. I didn’t even know they had jails on a ferry. Now I’ll never forget! How does it feel having fans all over the world? We’re starting to get the encore chant in different languages, which is really cool.

20

|

Sometimes we don’t know what they’re saying, but we assume they want another song. Otherwise, they’re very upset in unison about something. What’s your creative process like? It changes all the time. The one thing to say about the creative process is to just do things. I think some people hide behind a process or hide behind inspiration when the reality is, if you don’t sit down to write a song or pick up your paintbrush, you’re not actually going to achieve anything. So, it’s simple: do the thing and create! One of Six60’s first singles was ‘Don’t Forget Your Roots’. Why is it important to not forget your roots? It can mean where you came from physically because there’s more of a connection to a place than some people might think. It can be your family. It can also be more philosophical or more spiritual. There’s some reason that you exist, even if it’s just pure happenstance.

rom Cub Sport to Dami Im, Brisbane musicians have it going on and no one knows this more than Sample Space – the creative hub helping locals support locals. “Life is filled with ups and downs, and music helps us celebrate the highs, endure the lows and heal our wounds,” says founder Marc Hackenberg. “We want to make sure Brisbane artists get opportunities to shine.” Essentially, Sample Space hosts DJs, producers and electronic artists to create a community of likeminded people who can rely on each other. Offering artist bookings, workshops, technical support, event planning, plus sound and lighting hire and help is just a few of the many ways they’re putting Brisbane

centre stage. Also, if your musical talents are yet to be unearthed, Sample Space can help you hit the decks with DJ and music producer training, joining students from as young as age eight to fifty. Should you have an event looming, Marc has you covered with his top tips to ensure your next sound soiree has the best beats of the social calendar: • Book early. The best musical providers are often booked out one year in advance. • Set up a meeting first and look for professional conduct and manner. • Try to be specific about what you want and need. The musician’s job is to help you realise your vision. • To avoid an impersonal service, ask

questions such as if they will be performing or reading the crowd. • Give the musician guidance so they don’t disappoint you. They will prepare and can change on the fly, but it’s best to think about guidelines beforehand. • Let your close guests have input before the event. Requests on the night are often disruptive and damage the vibe. The best DJ is the person that knows what you want and plays it so you can focus on enjoying your event. • If you must have requests, suggest they go to a nominated person, like the emcee. Green is trending this season, and we don’t mean the colour. BY DINUSHKA GUNASEKARA

F ELKA COLLECTIVE

PEONY

rom Victorian tragedy to victorious hues, the colour green has had a tumultuous history in fashion. The once arseniclaced dye of the 1800s brought forth the demise of many fashion-forward, gown-adorned women, but its redemption arc completed its ascent when ‘Greenery’ was named the Pantone Colour of the Year for 2017. Today, green is making a comeback in all things vogue, however the first step in embracing it has nothing to do with the shade. Sustainability is how we’re going green, and it’s a fashion movement the world has been dying for. In Australia, the demand for more clothes at less value is one of the highest in the world, but low costs for customers equals high costs for the environment. Fast fashion churns out tonnes of cheap clothes in developing countries, wasting huge amounts of energy and resources while polluting waterways with toxic chemicals. Many materials we double-tap are synthetic and non-biodegradable, meaning even washing can be hazardous, as they shed plastic micro-fibres that sneak into water catchments and oceans. While the fashion industry is more than liable, the onus still lies with the consumer. If

we stop demanding it, brands stop supplying it. However, doing the right thing doesn’t mean you have to forage for leaves and a sewing machine; plenty of brands are making green look oh-so-good. James Street resident label, Elka Collective, has sewn sustainability into their autumn collection, ‘Shift’, by implementing natural dyeing and a selection of yarns that are ethical or recycled. “We want to do as much for the planet as we can while still producing beautiful collections,” they said. “As young women and mums, the health of our planet is incredibly important to us.” Meanwhile, luxury Australian swimwear brand, Peony, is ensuring we still have somewhere to swim in by combining recycled fabrics with an initiative to clean up our oceans through the unique fabric, Econyl. Comprised of abandoned fishnets and nylon waste from landfills and oceans, Econyl reduces the global warming impact of nylon by up to 80%. “Growing up in Australia has given us a deep love and respect for the natural world,” Peony said. “We have an inherent desire to preserve and protect it.”

LOVE

Song you walked down the aisle to? In the Coptic Orthodox tradition, the soon-to-be husband and wife walk down the aisle to a hymn called “Epouro”, which means “O King of Peace”. How did he propose? Ben picked me up after being at a friend’s hens weekend and convinced me we were going out for a special family dinner. We were the first to get ready and he insisted we left before everyone else for a drink at Palazzo Versace Hotel, Gold Coast. We walked along the marina and looked at the gondolas (which I love!). To my surprise, there was a gondola waiting with my favourite dish (carbonara) and wine with our names on it. We hopped in and set sail. While I was enjoying the view, he pulled a ring out and asked me to marry him! Describe the church location and why you chose it... Whilst Ben and I are Coptic Orthodox, we have always loved the iconography that the Greek church displays. Every inch of the walls and ceiling is beautifully painted in the life of Christ, you’re completely surrounded by Him. Stand out moment? Ben’s oldest brother, Josh, read a quote by St. John Chrysostom. I thought it was so beautiful and it has stuck with me ever since: “The husband and wife should be like the hand and the eye. When the hand hurts, the eyes should cry. And when the eye cries, the hand should wipe away it’s tears.”

ADORNMENT

Like mother, like daughter Timeless, elegant and made with love and sentiment, a piece from Bluebird Co. will make the perfect gift as Mother’s Day approaches. We sat down with founder, Sarah, to get to know the magic behind the brand.

Hi Sarah, tell us about the new collection? Our soon to arrive Vintage Collection includes a range of bespoke pieces for adults and children, with matching mother and daughter vintage-inspired bracelets and necklaces. All pieces in the collection offer a sentimental, personalised touch whether in the form of a matching vintage-style setting for mother and child, or personalised pendants on our nostalgic pendant bracelets. The collection features beautifully-made jewellery designed for everyday wear. Each piece is adjustable to fit the wearer perfectly. Favourite piece from this collection? The Vintage Pearl bracelet is a piece that is very close to my heart because it was our first foray into the world of fair-trade manufacturing. The style and functionality of this bracelet is something I am really proud of – it is completely unique as a child’s keepsake bracelet, yet so well-crafted to ensure that children can enjoy wearing these beautiful pieces every day and not just for special occasions. Tell us about the inspiration behind this collection? Our brand is built upon the age-old idea of timeless keepsakes given to mark memorable moments. This collection draws inspiration from mid-century jewellery

design, which commonly featured the star motif. For a long time, I have wanted to create a design that incorporated stars and set with seed pearls. My daughter’s name is Pearl and I was drawn to this name as pearls represent feminine wisdom. Making jewellery with sentiment is so important to me. We’ve always aimed to create pieces that mums and daughters can wear together. Where does your passion stem from? My personal values of being intentional and using what is in my hands to make a difference in people’s lives. Prior to having children I was a teacher, and my work always meant so much more to me than just ‘teaching’ children. I felt invested in each child’s life and wellbeing. Similarly, when my hobby of creating jewellery for my daughter and her friends turned into my job, I saw it as an opportunity to make meaningful jewellery that would offer sentimental value, as well as being aesthetically beautiful. Our customers are more than just people buying our products. Assisting those who are vulnerable and disadvantaged is very important to me. We give a percentage of our proceeds to support the ongoing work of Eagle’s Wings, a development organisation working on the ground in Zambia. BLUEBIRD CO BLUEBIRDCO.COM.AU

elcome to a powerhouse where every aspect of a client’s journey is considered long before and beyond the hairdressing chair. The Epic experience is one which of course renders industry-leading results but, behind salon doors, the experience is a journey that begins with scissors down, both for stylists and clients alike. Every Epic employee is on a journey themselves, with an individual mapped-out plan featuring strategy, skill, technique and psychological components. Some of these are unexpected when you think of hairdressing as a profession, but this is the new wave of hair care with Epic leading the way. A trip to the hairdresser is something that’s becoming a wellness necessity, both mentally and physically and that’s why each staff member undergoes extensive training on all realms of a client’s journey. From reading body language to understanding if the client wants to chat or have a moment of solitude, to the history of the client’s hair integrity and health, it’s all considered long before a strand of hair has been touched. No longer is hairdressing considered a “in the meantime” job, it’s a career that offers length, integrity and depth – three things that also makes for great hair. The Epic Academy began in 2017, in the hands of Operations Manager, Shayne Wright. With an extensive

career in the industry, Shayne has shaped the formula of training to nurture and support the skill of all stylists – both those who originate on Epic floors as apprentices, to already established industry professionals moving over to join the ranks. Shayne’s passion is as effective as a good toner is to blonde – it’s brightening, eye-catching and addictive, and felt in all lengths and ends of the company. As a progressive powerhouse, training occurs both internally and externally while collaborating with industry leaders and aligning with product brands like Goldwell, Olaplex, Showpony Extensions and Kerastase. So, what does the academy and training program look like? It covers everything from needs analysis, to individual program plans and specialised branding programmes from Goldwell and Kerastase, to a leadership module. “We study the client journey and understand the research behind the guests’ experience, knowing when to educate guests on products. We know walking into a salon on your day off can feel uncomfortable at first, so we combat this by making sure you’re greeted straight away and then seated and comfortable with our complimentary service menu,” Shayne explains. Baby face

Dr DeAmbrosis

For a smooth skinned pregnancy journey, we talked to one of Brisbane’s leading dermatologists. The usual comprehensive pregnancy upkeep may not involve a skincare routine, but dermatologist at Valley Plastic Surgery, Dr Kate DeAmbrosis, has seen many patients come forward with pre and post-partum skin problems. Common concerns include melasma – or ‘mask of pregnancy’ – and linea nigra, which are pigmentary changes in the skin from hormonal impacts. Stretch marks are also common on the abdomen and thighs, as well as skin tags, which are small growths of excess skin that develop on the upper trunk. Patients prone to eczema, psoriasis or acne often worry the hormonal changes can cause flare ups or that these conditions can pass onto the baby. However, Dr DeAmbrosis

reassures immune changes associated with pregnancy can improve inflammatory dermatoses, and maternal skin diseases don’t impact the baby, nor reflect the likelihood of the child being born with the condition. From prescribed medication to phototherapy, there are plenty of safe treatments for skin problems during pregnancy. Valley Plastic Surgery offers the newly developed phototherapy system, the Waldmann UV 7002, as a physical treatment alternative to medication for conditions like psoriasis, which can inflame in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Dr DeAmbrosis also stresses the importance of developing a strong photoprotective skincare routine

early. “With the many options available today, there’s guaranteed to be a sunscreen that suits everyone,” she says. “Working your choice agent into your morning routine is protective not only against skin cancer, but in assisting to combat the many changes your skin will face through the pregnancy and post-partum period.” VALLEY PLASTIC SURGERY 51 BALLOW ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY P 3488 8118 VALLEYPLASTICSURGERY.COM.AU

WE’RE BRINGING YOU THESE TIPS FOR SAFE AND HEALTHY TRAVEL IN FUTURE.

Vacation veins

If you’re not moving, your blood isn’t either. Whether it’s on the road or in the air, those who suffer with varicose veins should think about how they travel. If you have venous disease or a family history of varicose veins, then you could be at risk of complications, such as Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) or a blood clot. The greatest danger is a clot breaking loose and travelling to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. A scary thought, but not one that should stop you enjoying your trip because these easy steps can make a difference: • Put on that tracksuit! Do not wear tight clothes that inhibit movement. Loose clothing allows unrestricted blood flow. 34

|

• Keep moving. Bend and straighten your legs, massage your calf muscles and wriggle your toes. If you’re taking a road trip, stop every couple of hours for a short walk. During air or train travel, walk up and down the aisles for five minutes every hour. • Wear stockings. Compression improves circulation by gently applying pressure, stimulating blood flow. Travel socks can be bought from chemists, however, if you’re at risk, you should consider getting compression stockings from a phlebologist. • Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcoholic beverages that can contribute to dehydration, which is often made worse by STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

e’ve never hidden the fact that, when it comes to blondes, we think this hair haven is one of Brisbane’s best. Perfectly curated blonde hues are all in a day’s work for salon director, Chelsie and her team, who tackle each transformation or touch-up with dedicated precision. From their expert stylists housed in an effortlessly luxe salon, to their resident sweetheart, Lara the pug, the Hairytales experience stands out for all the right reasons. We would know, because we tried it for ourselves! Styler and in-house blonde bombshell, Corrina, put her hair in Chelsie’s hands and while the gorgeous results speak for themselves, the process is definitely worth talking about it. Greeted by first name and offered a glass of champagne as well as bakery snacks that could have Hairytales leading a whole different industry, Corrina was

immediately at ease. “As a blonde, seeing so many hairdressers with beautiful blonde hair immediately made me feel confident I was in the best hands,” she said. Booked in for the works (blonde colourcorrection using a full head of cute, cactusprinted foils), Corrina knows what she likes: she prefers a creamier blonde over ashy, that’s not too warm or too cool. “Most of the girls in the salon, including Chelsie, rock cooler tones, but Chelsie actually listened to what I like and coloured my hair accordingly,” she said. And that was only the beginning of Chelsie’s attention to detail. “After completing the foils, Chelsie spent further time at the basin bleaching the ends of my hair to remove colour banding, which I hadn’t even noticed until she pointed it out,” Corrina said. “She really went above and beyond to give me the best possible outcome.” Out of the salon, the gorgeous colour, lush APRIL 2020

texture and glowing shine were beautifully locked into Corrina’s locks. Australian suiting trends

Meet me online

Wellbeing of mothers

Australian style has evolved significantly over the last 10 years. We used to be very structured and if we weren’t wearing jeans, we were wearing a suit with heavy shoulder pads. This more structured style comes from our United Kingdom heritage and their influences. As time passed, however, we started to understand and appreciate the Italians’ style, with their less structured, more comfortable approach to suiting. We have continued to adopt the Italian sartorial elegance into our own business casual space. We currently create more sport jackets than suits and I don’t see this changing any time soon. I believe Australians have finally settled into our place in the sartorial world. For your autumn stylish sports jacket, it must be an earthy colour tone and must have texture. A more casual patch pocket may be used to achieve that. I would also recommend using an Australian wool that is milled in Italy to create the perfect blend between both influences.

With one main issue on everybody’s mind, we forget that we need to still focus on other aspects of our lives, such as our relationships. In a time like this, shrouded by stress, anxiety and uncertainty, relationship issues can be exacerbated. This is even more of a possibility when you are required to quarantine together. However, I’m still here if you need help. As businesses, schools, and universities move toward online operations, so do we. PBR Coaching is now offering a quarantine and selfisolation friendly way of attending your appointment – you can meet me online. With tools such as Zoom amongst the preferred methods, you can now talk to an expert relationship counsellor from the comfort of your own home. Brew some tea, grab your jammies and together, we can get to the root of the problem. For more information on how we can meet online, get in touch with me today through the number below.

With Mother’s Day approaching, it’s important to consider the health of mums. Minimising risk factors and boosting protective factors is key to their wellbeing. This includes maintaining strong support networks with family, friends, other parents and the community. Mothers must have a positive sense of identity where they aren’t defined only as a parent, but also as an independent person, partner and professional. Little focus on life outside of motherhood can have an overwhelming impact on self-image. Staying physically healthy and attentive to self-care is essential – get regular exercise, eat well, reduce stress, and have fun. Mums need to develop effective coping and problem-solving skills so that when struggles inevitably occur, one recovers quickly. Maintain realistic optimism and a belief that life has hope, and have a positive attitude to support-seeking. If things get too much, consult your GP for suggestions of support services.

In your genes

While contact sports are fun to play, they can come with the risk of injury. By playing, you are increasing the risk of severe damage to the lips, teeth and jaw. Not only can these injuries be very painful, they can also be quite expensive and incredibly difficult to fix. However, that shouldn’t keep you from the game! Wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard is the best way to ensure you have tackle-proof teeth that are safe from damage and are protected from the types of injuries that can be caused by forceful contact. By wearing a mouthguard during contact sport, any force directed to the mouth area is absorbed, helping to disperse the intensity of the impact and prevent injury. James Street Dentists can make mouthguards specifically designed for any mouth shape, allowing you to breathe easily throughout your game, keep maximum comfort, and most importantly, protect your teeth, lips and jaw from damage – perfect for a winning smile.

Developing varicose veins is all about your genes. That’s DNA genes, not the blue ones! As Dr Osler said, “Varicose veins are the result of an improper selection of grandparents.” Varicose veins develop due to vein incompetence, which is caused by leaky valves in the vein. This is what you can blame your grandparents for. If you have leaky valves, chances are you inherited them and if both parents have varicose veins, you have a 90% chance of developing them. Lifestyle choices can help reduce risk and slow down venous disease. For example, moderate exercise, being a healthy weight, and wearing compression stockings if you are on your feet or sit for long periods will help. Developing varicose veins might be impossible to avoid, but thankfully there are now more treatment options available to help get rid of them. With EndoVenous Laser Ablation, Vein Glue and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy, even the most severe varicose veins can be treated in a minimally invasive fashion.

I

’ll be brutally honest, when I was in my 20s I didn’t look after my skin well at all. I never washed my makeup off at the end of the day and couldn’t have told you what a serum was used for. Afterall, my skin was great, I didn’t need to worry, right? A big part of approaching my 30s meant I couldn’t quite get away with that treatment anymore (hello pigmentation, sunspots, dullness, blemishes and tiny wrinkles!). From that came my great love of quality skincare, but especially sun protection. There’s no doubt a great moisturiser has the ability to hydrate and soothe tired skin but when it’s full of potent cosmeceutical illuminating Vitamin B3, hyaluronic acid and protective zinc, it’s a total game changer when it comes to the longevity of skin health. Since using ASI’s Rejuvenating Day Cream it’s given my skin the hydration and protection it needs all day and more. With the ability to sit under makeup like a dream and somehow manage to keep blemishes at bay, I’m keeping this one in my beauty essentials bag. AUSTRALIANSKININSTITUTE.COM.AU @ASI_SKINCARE

With all the coronavirus chaos, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Consider the following your new c-words, with a very different connotation. BY DINUSHKA GUNASEKARA AND GEORGIE MURRAY

KEEP CALM… YOU KNOW THE REST Remember a time in your life when each day felt like a snowball rolling down a hill, collecting and growing and speeding up to become a mammoth beast that felt completely out of your control? You used all your 11:11s, fallen eyelashes and blown-out candles to hope for one thing: that life would just pause. Layoff. Give you a break. Well, a genie has to have their fun too, right, so although it might not be the most orthodox solution, your wish is granted. The eye of the storm, the dark before dawn; whatever you want to call it, this is your calm amongst the chaos. Do as much as you’d like or nothing at all because your type of tranquil is the only accepted mode to be in. Napping, breathing exercises, meditation and yoga will have you freezing with the chill, but if they’re not your vibe, then that’s completely fine too. There is time and this is yours, so spend it however you’d like. Tick-off that list of movies that’s only been growing, dust off the unread books sitting on your shelf or, just be. Exist. The world will keep on turning, but, for right now, you don’t have to keep up. The only item on your agenda is to find your Zen and thrive in it.

WITH A CARE IN THE WORLD Take care of your business, particularly outside your 9-5. Now is not the time to cut ties. If it’s a loose end, it’s being tied up with the expert skills of a scout. Care for yourself. Care for your family. Care for your friends. Care for your neighbours. And maybe even spare a care for your foes. Caring is a strength; emotional connections

may create a potential bridge for pain, but it’ll have to make its way past the happiness marching through on the daily. Albeit extreme, the current situation has only proven that humanity is not self-sufficient. So, show your appreciation to those who are part of the equation that equals your life, no matter how integral their role or mundane their appearance. What’s happening in the world may seem grim, but the measures being taken are merely proof that the world cares. Did it have to take a pandemic to make it happen? Ideally not, but here we are, and we care. You may be surprised to realise how many people make your life how uniquely yours it is, until you are made to take a step back, 1.5 metres away.

COMMUNICATION STATION It’s an important value in life generally, and one in which many of us find difficult, despite communication being more accessible than ever. Put down the paper cups and string, it’s time to get real about communicating with others and importantly, with yourself. Pick up the phone – whether it’s still on a hook, in your pocket, or in a box with an orange lid just up the road. Alexander Graham Bell would be so impressed, right? The saying goes “communication is key” and I hate to admit how spot on it is. Once you rattle the key, give it a little to the left, bit more to the right, the door can swing open. While you’re in isolation, it doesn’t mean technology is and this is your metaphorical key and door. Finally send that text, check-in with that friend, make that phone call you’ve been putting off. If you’re not reaching out and talking to those around you for their

sake, do it for yours. Two minutes on the phone can do a lot to lighten the load on the mind. Saying something outloud, even to yourself is considered communication and it 100% counts. Otherwise, subtle communication can help play a part, too. Words With Friends, trivia apps, Messenger games and more, greases up the lock so it’s easier than ever for it to turn and the door to open, both ways. Need I mention FaceTime? That one should be a no-brainer.

SIMPLY, JUST COPE The current situation we’re enduring is uncharted. We’re rolling with the waves, seeing the ripples and going again. And, with that, it’s integral that we all understand it’s okay not to be okay. Often, the waves don’t conform like we wanted or dreamt of, but that doesn’t define how wet the water is. It’s okay to simply just cope and take each day as it comes. Although it’s cliché, the notion has merit. Whether it be a job loss, personal loss or general anxiety, it’s okay to feel deflated, lost and experience a sense of grief. You’re not alone – the numbers show that. The silver linings of simply just coping is that every day is an achievement. Every day, you’ve succeeded in something – whether it be a minor decision, taking action, being able to have a laugh or using a mechanism to relieve stress that you’ve been practicing. There’re so many successes that can happen within 24 hours and whole lot more to hit out of the park in the 24 after that. Wake-up and hit reset because if any singular day can make a huge difference, those days are nigh. If you’re coping, you’re not failing and therefore, you’re succeeding.

aintree, Daintree, Daintree… where do I even begin? The moment I stepped off the plane and into that balmy North Queensland air, it felt like the two-hour flight had whisked me away to another country, but without having to exchange money or catch a dodgy taxi. Tick! We then started on our journey along the mind-blowing Great Barrier Reef drive and arrived at the Daintree Rainforest river crossing. It was then we found out that the dandy ol’ Daintree is completely off-the-grid and the phone service… zip! Into the wild, we went.

We spent the afternoon walking through the rainforest (literally) in the footsteps of the dinosaurs and cassowaries with our cool-AF tour guide, and my inner David Attenborough was loving it! And the exploring didn’t stop there. We cooled down after our walk with a dip in a freshwater spring, downed an ice cream in 3.5 seconds and finished at our accommodation for the night, Mist at Cape Tribulation. With only three luxurious boutique cabins nestled into the rainforest, it was an experience I won’t soon forget. In hindsight, it was perfect for a honeymoon… maybe I’ll be back one day! Fun fact: did you know the Daintree Rainforest is 180-million-years-old? The Amazon is only a youngin’ at 55-million. True story. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

Stepping onto the river cruise After arguably the most relaxing morning of my adult life laying around on the daybed (no phone reception, remember), we were whisked away to board the Daintree Boatman Nature Tours. I can’t even tell you how much I was looking forward to this. Not only was the boat solar-powered so we didn’t disturb the river creatures, but our tour guide was also super passionate about the wildlife (namely the crocs). After passing a few log-o-diles, we came across a big fella named Scooter getting some sun on the riverbank. Year = made.

An important message of support: while we understand the current need not to travel and to observe social distancing for the immediate future, we’re offering up travel stories of inspiration and hope for when people can travel again. /TOURISM.PORTDOUGLAS @TOURISMPORTDOUGLAS TOURISMPORTDOUGLAS.COM.AU VISITPORTDOUGLASDAINTREE.COM

Stepping into paradise The day didn’t end there. We then jumped on a bigger boat (a yacht actually) and sailed to Low Isles – a pint-sized island off the coast of Port Douglas. And we struck Great Barrier Reef gold, with glassy conditions to snorkel beside a sea turtle, an octopus (rare apparently!), reef sharks, colourful fish and a giant clam. It was magical, there’s no other way to describe it. And only made better seeing the sunset on the sail back. Tropical North Queensland is full of incredible gems to explore and take-in, and these are just a small few. So, go on, Daintreat yourself to a much-needed, muchdeserved getaway in the wildly beautiful Australian tropics. There has never been a better time to book a local trip and support our own.
