other’s Day only comes around once a year and is the time to spoil the special lady in your life. Make sure your love doesn’t go unnoticed this year with our epic gift guide. To celebrate Mother’s Day, we chat to some inspirational mothers to learn how motherhood has surprised, delighted and challenged them on page 12. Alongside special mothers out there, this month we’re inspired by the Brisbane Business people who have achieved great things! From property investors to hairdressers and duos doing it for themselves, it really is true when they say find a job you like and you’ll never have to work another day in your life. All of these business people are as distinctive as they are different, yet they all have one thing in common — the desire to succeed in their field. On the cover this month, we have Kendall Gilding the Channel 7 Brisbane Racing Club Carnival Ambassador, who is just as eager as we are for the Carnival to kick off. This year, it’s all about experiencing the classic aspects of racing and you won’t want to miss a minute of the action. We also feature creatives such as the cartoonist, Sarah Steenland, living all of our dreams on the wide open seas, Prudence Richardson who proves that even if you’re counting down to pay day, you can still look your best and Victoria Novak, who shines the light on millinery. Before you put that keyboard to rest for the day, take a moment to enter the major competition online that will get you poolside thanks to GET LUXE! Happy reading.

B
ackpacking through Europe Eat Pray Love style, publishing a book and topping a best-seller list, becoming fluent in a second language and promptly moving overseas, experiencing space travel, even simply learning how to make and maintain a personal budget – these are a few lifealtering, bucket list adventures I am yet to (and may not ever) experience. Becoming a mother is one such adventure that I have never experienced yet am incredibly curious about and in awe of. The miracle of motherhood is one that has always puzzled me. Not only does the mind-boggling concept of conceiving and growing a mini-human inside a womb completely dazzle me, but also the entire culture around motherhood is so
fascinating. From the singular connection a mother forms with her child to the dated stereotypes our society is slowly discarding, it’s a complex whirlpool that is both delightful and daunting. As a young millennial who’s greatest achievement thus far has been a solo trip through Japan, it’s safe to say that I am not an authority on motherhood. With Mother’s Day on our horizon, I thought it would be an opportune moment to tap into the mothers in my life to learn, straight from the heart, what it means to be a mother. I asked 7 mums of all ages, backgrounds and lifestyles to share with me what surprised, delighted or challenged them most about having kids. READ MORE ONLINE
It surprised me how unique each of my kids are. They each respond to things so differently. It’s stunning how individual and oneof-a-kind they are.
LOU, 41
I’VE LEARNED NOT TO SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF AND TO APPRECIATE THE SIMPLE THINGS IN LIFE. I’M CONSTANTLY IN AWE AT HOW RESILIENT KIDS ARE AND HOW, AS A PARENT, WE TEND TO FUSS AND STRESS OVER SILLY LITTLE THINGS THAT AREN’T NECESSARY. MY SON IS THE HAPPIEST WHEN HE SEES ME HAPPY AND RELAXED.
KATHRYN, 37
I thought I knew what tired felt like, but it wasn’t until I had my babies that I really knew what it meant to be dropdead exhausted. But in saying that, I also learned that I am stronger than I thought. I can be on my feet all day, I can juggle part time work and twins and I can function on three hours of sleep – all without coffee!
GEN, 26
HAVING A CHILD MEANS YOU WILL BE CONSTANTLY SURPRISED AND DELIGHTED. WITH EACH CHILD, YOUR HEART FILLS WITH EVEN MORE LOVE AND JOY. UNTIL YOU EXPERIENCE THIS YOU CAN’T POSSIBLY COMPREHEND WHAT THIS MEANS.
VERONICA, 55 Right up until I was wheeled into the birthing suite I felt unprepared and, honestly, terrified. It wasn’t until I actually held her for the first time that I thought I could do this. It felt like everything just clicked in my mind.
Motherhood has this unique ability to bring you closer to those around you. They say it takes a village to raise a child – I’m thankful for the village that has supported me.
KELLY, 30 YOUR CHILDREN WILL ALWAYS SURPRISE YOU WITH THEIR UNEXPECTED KINDNESS, CURIOUS INQUISITIVENESS AND CHEEKY MISCHIEVOUSNESS. EVERY DAY WITH THEM IS AN ADVENTURE!

FITNESS FADS
& Feeling Good While infomercials clamor over the latest Thighmasters and Shake Weights, these Brisbane based fitness studios offer up the fitness fads worth their weight in muscle. Words by Jade Horrobin
TOTAL FUSION
W
hile “get fit fast” has been the mantra for fitness fads since the eighties, the new kids on the block have redefined the game. Forget hours on the treadmill, cursing that extra doughnut you scoffed down on the weekend, these fitness alternatives provide a workout you’ll actually enjoy.
HARLOW HOT YOGA
VIVA PILATES STUDIO The winner of movement of the moment for 2018 definitely goes to Reformer Pilates. Viva Pilates Studio specialises in offering high intensity, low impact Reformer Pilates classes with an array of total reformation classes as well as six different specialised reformer classes. These specialised classes include a world first fusion between Reformer Pilates and meditation as well as a toosh, thighs and tum class and a targeted apparatus class. Sign. Us. Up.
TOTAL FUSION With mindful movement at the core of their mentality, Total Fusion are all about working the whole body. They offer up a complete mix of classes including functional training, cycle, boxing and barefoot boot camp: but the shining star is their unique aerial yoga offering. Activating muscles you never knew you had, you’ll end up sweaty, sore and stretched out all while having the time of your life monkeying around off the ground. PAGE 14
F45 TRAINING
VIVA PILATES STUDIO
Merging three separate training styles, F45 Training offers up a 45 minute long, high intensity exercise that’ll leave you panting for breath and begging for the sweet release of death immediately afterwards, but feeling like a fierce warrior queen an hour later. With studios all over Brisbane, F45 is the fitness love child of HIIT training, Circuit training and Functional training. With 31 different workouts, you’ll never be bored with F45.
HARLOW HOT YOGA Capitalising on Far Infrared (FIR) heat, Harlow Hot Yoga focuses on improving the health of your body at a cellular level. More than just setting the temperature of the room to a steaming 40 degrees, the infrared heat used in their studio rooms actually speed up your cellular metabolism. Add these benefits to the multitude of positives from yoga practice and you’ve got yourself a winner of a workout. MAY 2018
Strictly Boardroom This CEO is swapping her scissors for dancing shoes, in a bid to support a good cause. Each year Brisbane’s leading CEO’s swap the boardroom for the dance floor, as they take to the stage at City Hall in front of 900 guests to support the prevention of domestic violence. The event is the largest gala held in City Hall and raises funds for the Domestic Violence state-wide work of Women’s Legal Service. Each year, more than 11,000 women and with them 17,000 children are helped to a safer future through Women’s Legal Service. Currently only 50% of women seeking help can be assisted. The event raises much needed funds to help more women and children when they need it most.
This year, Natasha Wichura will be one of the CEO’s fighting for glory, hoping to take out one of the titles. The hairdresser is no stranger to the event, having provided hair services back stage for many years and has supported the fundraising campaigns of other CEOs. This year she is bravely stepping onto the big stage to show her support, as well as being a sponsor and making the other Dancing CEOs look great. Other than loving music and having it rocking all day at her salon Obsidian Hair, Tash has no previous dance experience but she is sure to light up the stage come May 18.

On top of the
world SEA
She’s the pink-haired, ocean advocating, cruising cartoonist that’s been sailing the high seas since 2012. Courtney Frank caught up with Sarah Steenland to chat about free waterfront views, drive through sashimi and all things in the big blue. What made you want to trade land for sea? There were many reasons, but what keeps us living and travelling via boat is that we get to take our little home with us wherever we go, coupled with all the unexpected adventures that happen everyday. Plus, the absolute water frontage that we don’t have to pay millions for! What is the craziest thing that’s happened to you on your journey so far? We had a crazy interaction with some local fishermen off the coast of Sumatra. A small, bright blue fishing boat came screaming up to us and we waved and tried not to look nervous (pirates operate in the Strait of Malacca). We yelled out to the fishermen “do you have any fish?” and they responded by pulling out two medium sized tuna. We traded the tuna over the rails without slowing down, then we all waved and cheered as they took off toward the horizon. Drive through sashimi! You’re obviously passionate about the ocean. What’s one thing you’d like Style readers to know about protecting our marine environment?
The amount of plastic we have seen in the ocean and on Australian beaches has been both distressing and depressing. It’s a massive problem and it’s something we can’t afford to ignore. Recycling won’t solve the problem alone, we need to put more effort into avoiding plastic altogether. How many places have you visited? And where has been your favourite so far? We’ve visited towns all along the Australian Coast, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Cambodia. We all agree that the Anambas Islands in Indonesia is our favourite so far. We will return there in 2019 as we make our way to Japan. Do you think you’ll ever settle on the mainland again? And if so, where? I can’t see myself settling anywhere for a long time, but I’ve learnt that you should never say never! It’s a lot of fun discovering new places that are off the beaten tourist track and our two kids are learning so much by experiencing the world as upclose-and-personal as you can get. And for us, that’s a beautiful thing to witness.
Sarah Steenland

JUDY ELLIOT & JESS BANDIERA – VERANDAH INTERIORS
RHONNIE STRANEY & BRIDIE HAYES – FLOCK FIT, GODDESS GANG
What made you want to follow in your mum’s footsteps Jess? Growing up, mum had a beautiful furniture and homewares store. I would work every weekend and help restyle all the shelves, that’s where I fell in love with design and working with my mother. Judy, how does it make you feel watching Jess’ career blossom? I’m actually blown away and in awe of her incredible ability to run the business as efficiently as she does. I’m blessed that I get to be by her side, to guide and inspire her to be the very best designer she can be.
How was your new active luxe range, Goddess Gang, born? We both wear activewear all the time, so we wanted to showcase how we wear it. We tend to edge it up a bit, it doesn’t always have to be with leggings and runners. The focus is really on being comfortable, chic and wearable. What’s your favourite Mother’s Day memory Rhonnie? We did a road trip from Sydney to Byron together a few years ago. I’d just bought a convertible and we played our favourite music the whole time. Bridie sings too, so we turned the music up and grooved out.

MEIKE DE DEYNE & CHARLIE DE DEYNE – MAS & MIEK, THE CERAMIC HOUSE
JUDY ELLIOT & JESS BANDIERA
What sparked your decision to go into business together as mother and daughter? As a young girl, Charlie would always hang out with me at my studio. From there, working together happened quite naturally and we combined our passion selling at the fabulous Goma Markets twice a year under the name Mas & Miek. Charlie, what’s the biggest thing you’ve learnt on this journey together? In teaching the art of ceramic practice, we learned to be more patient and to nourish the creativity that people crave at their own pace and in their own direction.

Just when you thought you had found the best Pad Thai Brisbane has to offer, along comes another contender. WORDS BY CHRISTIE SUTHERLAND

asuarina’s famed Spice Den has created their footprint in the big smoke at the base of Queen Street’s Spire Residences. Through the fringed curtains, the new hideout is revealed and it packs a punch both on the plate and with their super sleek interiors. The curious allure of dark wood, polished concrete, deep red leather seating, gold accents and dimmed lighting allows for all sorts of spicy enjoyment. The private circular booths ensure that a luxurious option is available to groups and to those popping in to get their quick fix, the bar seating overlooking the restaurant makes room for envious food gazers. Known for its upscale banquet options, the menu is home to a range of small plates and soups through to protein-rich dishes such as curries and noodles. All designed to share, there is an option for everyone and almost everything is gluten free, which when sharing is a godsend! Soft duck pancakes with cucumber, pickled chilli, soy and crisp shallots and the well known sashimi white fish dish initiated the flavour-filled experience. It’s all about combining authentic cooking techniques, nuanced flavours and the very freshest of ingredients. Diving straight into the larger dishes, the papaya salad with cherry tomatos and sweet nahm jim complemented the choice of royal red curry with boneless duck leg, lime and lemongrass and the un-missable chicken pad Thai, which was as delicious as ever. They encourage sharing, with dishes designed to be savoured by a group, ensuring you get to try as many of the delicacies as possible. Dealing with impostor syndrome
You’ve spent endless hours researching the perfect ring and finally bought a beautiful jewel online. But how do you know that the quality stated by the vendor is what you actually received? Especially if the ring was purchased from a vendor based overseas and is not subject to Australian Consumer Law. The answer is to obtain an independent jewellery valuation. The valuation will confirm metal type and caratage, item weight, gemstone identity, size and quality. It’s important to remember that even though the vendor may issue you with an ‘in-house’ valuation certificate or a ‘Certificate of Authenticity’, it’s still important to have the item checked over by a professional and valued for replacement in the Australian marketplace. This is especially crucial if the vendor has offered a specific return period for a potential refund if you are unhappy with your purchase.
Anyone who owns an Apple device such as an iPhone, iPad or a Mac computer has free access to Apple’s iCloud service. But a common question we get is whether “cloud computing” be trusted with our photos, logins and passwords, as well as bank and credit card details? The short answer is yes! In Apple’s case. Apple’s iCloud security is first rate (even the U.S. National Security Agency can’t crack it). The reason many people are sceptical is because of misinformation or a general misunderstanding of how Apple’s iCloud works, how secure it is, and how convenient and beneficial it is to use. Many benefits of Apple’s iCloud service are simply not available on other cloud platforms, but you can use those as well, if desired. Apple’s iCloud can be utilised for your emails, contacts, calendars, notes, photos, reminders and to create documents, spreadsheets and presentation slides.
Despite achieving success, some people are unable to internalise their accomplishments, feel inadequate, or have a fear of being exposed as a fraud. Successes are dismissed as luck or a result of deceiving others into thinking you are more competent than you really are. This feeling is common and not necessarily unhelpful. To manage this sometimes-limiting belief system, it can be very useful to discuss the issue of anxiety and unworthiness with people early in their careers as well as mentors. They will normalise your self-doubt and inner critic as you learn everyone feels inadequate at times. Making a list of achievements, positive feedback and success stories will reduce the impostor syndrome. Impostor syndrome is not always debilitating as it keeps the ego in check and can encourage you to strive to keep pushing boundaries.

If the suit fits, check the quality.
Barista automation, is it the future?
Don’t let the cool weather fool you
Quality fabrics go hand in hand with quality suits. Gaining knowledge about the sustainability of your clothing as well as the history of the mills is a great way to understand quality. Our fabrics at Wil Valor use Queensland wool and have a long, prestigious history of jacquard weaving. These textured wools are influencing the outfits of the upcoming racing seasons and fashion runways. The luminosity and colour of the fibres are rich and prominent. If you desire differentiation, choosing a luxurious textured fabric that complements your personal style will guarantee you stand out for the right reasons. With high quality fabrics, you will immediately notice the way it hugs the body and its beautiful fall. Knowing the story behind the suit fabrics will give you a higher appreciation for the luxury garments.
It won’t be long before your friendly barista at your local coffee shop will be replaced with an automated arm. Yes, that’s right, automated coffee kiosks are here, popping up all around the world. Said to be reliable and efficient in ways that no human can match, and reportedly serving up a mean cup of Joe. San Fransisco’s famous Cafe X has made waves for testing these types of humanreplacing technologies. But they’re not the first to experiment. Four years ago, a different type of automated coffee-making kiosk appeared at The University of Texas in Austin. Briggo is a wood-paneled contraption that takes up only about 15 metres and is manufactured in Austin, where the company hopes to carve out a niche for its vision of automated kiosks. It begs the question, is customer service more important than efficiency? Which rates higher in your mind?
Australia and New Zealand have the highest prevalence of skin cancer in the world. Optometrists are well placed to notice possible skin cancers on the eyelids and surrounding skin. In fact, skin cancers are a common encounter in routine optometric practice. The lower eyelids are most commonly affected, followed by the inner canthus, upper eyelid and outer canthus. There are things to look out for to aid early detection, however, some people show none of these. Changes in the appearance of the eyelid skin such as swelling or thickening; an area of broken skin which won’t heal; changes or loss of eyelashes can all be signs of skin cancer developing. Discussing your risk factors with your optometrist will allow you to make informed lifestyle choices. Adequate UV protection i.e. quality sunglasses and a hat are essential. Avoiding the midday sun and early detection are paramount.

Examining skin myths
Angels among us
‘May’-be the best time for treatment
There are many myths that have our clients puzzled. We’ve unpacked the four beauty myths we hear most. “You don’t need sunscreen on a cloudy day.” On a cloudy day, the UV radiation from the sun still makes its way through to the Earth’s surface. Wear an SPF 50+ sunscreen for optimal protection. “Skin cancers only show in sun exposed areas.” Bob Marley died from a melanoma which started on his toe. Skin damage is transferred to other skin cells even to places that have never seen the sun. “Beauty is pain.” If your skin care causes burning, stinging or tingling this can be an early sign of irritation. “The more expensive skin care is the better.” Many affordable skin care products are actually better than the expensive ones. Usually the active ingredients are the same; you are paying for the brand, packaging and the pretty smells.
We as women can be truly fearful of inexperienced eyebrow therapists. We are scared a therapist might wax our eyebrows off. We can be anxious about brows being taken too skinny or waxing the brow ends away! Even worse, taking skin off with bad waxing techniques or tinting brows too dark. We are always worried about going to see a new therapist and wonder, will she do a good job? Then we say ‘Oh, I won’t risk it, I’ll just pluck my own brows!’ Well, take a deep breath because my Eyebrow Artists are the best in the biz. They are your trusted experts. At The Brow Bar, the Arch Angels are trained to give you real brow solutions. We believe in full brow restoration and will make sure you receive the best possible brow experience! If you want to feel more youthful, lifted and fresh, you need to book yourself into “Brow Rehab” to achieve your best brows, especially for Mothers’s Day.
In winter, many of us pull on our trousers and forget about our legs for a few months. However, you might want to think again. The cooler part of the year is often considered the best time to commence treatment of your veins. Because you are covering up, no one will need to know that you are sporting those compression stockings underneath your maxi skirt or that those black ‘tights’ are actually for medical therapy. Following treatment, patients are required to walk for a short period of time as walking assists with speeding up the healing process along the treated vein, which can lead to better results. Winter temperatures mean it is much easier for patients to commit to walking 30 minutes a day whilst they are in their stockings. Treatment started in winter means that you are likely to have your legs looking good and feeling better in time for Melbourne Cup or next summer’s beach holiday!

Making your relationship soar
Something to chew on
3 Steps To Long, Luscious Locks
If you’re like most people who’ve struggled to make their relationship better, you know that there is no “magic formula” that will miraculously improve your marriage or your relationship. There is no quick-fix. No “He’ll get over it” or “These flowers will make it all better” mentality will change any relationship. The truth is, even the best relationships require work. Sure, gifts are great and apologies may even make things a little better for the time being, but these niceties hardly ever address the root cause of most relationship issues. Remember, like wings of a bird, a relationship takes two people working together to really fly. Have you ever seen how a bird with a broken wing can’t get off the ground? A marriage in disharmony usually suffers the same fate. If you would like some help with that question, come see me at PBR Coaching.
The size and shape of our jaws and faces are largely determined by how we function, along with our genes. How we breathe, where our tongue sits in our mouth, how we swallow and how we chew our food are basic functions but can have a large impact on our craniofacial growth patterns. Chewing is a very important part of orofacial development because it stimulates the bony growth receptors and encourages our body to lay down bone in the right place, in the right direction and at the right thickness. Our softer Westernised diets, along with the use of sippy cups and convenient food pouches are not allowing children the opportunity to develop their chewing muscles sufficiently. Less chewing means that we are less likely to reach our genetic jaw size, shape and position potential. If you would like an early development assessment for your child, contact us.
There are a lot of ways we can all better care for our hair, and not all of them involve investing a lot of time or money. By making a few changes to your routine, you can ensure your hair grows stronger and healthier! Daily Washing Washing your hair too much can actually damage it! Over-washing strips your hair of natural oils that help keep your hair healthy. Instead of washing daily, try cutting back to a few times a week and using a dry shampoo in between. Too Much Conditioner If you find your hair gets oily quickly, it might be a sign that you need to rethink your relationship with conditioner. Try using less conditioner and focusing on just the ends of your hair. Brushing Hair When Wet When your hair is wet it is at its most elastic and can stretch when tugged at with a hairbrush. Doing this too often will weaken your strand, eventually causing it to snap. Opt to towel-dry as much as possible and only use a wide-tooth comb.

BEFORE
The secret to ETERNAL YOUTH?
DURING
Styler Lucy sinks her teeth into the treatment everyone’s talking about: the vampire facial. Despite a relative obsession with expensive serums, I was yet to try any intensive skin treatments. However, since becoming engaged, I’ve developed an appetite for researching all things glow-inducing. A Vampire facial involves a combination of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and skin needling designed to increase collagen and elastin production, and with celebs like Kim Kardashian West spruiking the treatment, it was top of my list. I headed to Aquarius Medispa, where, in the safe hands of a practitioner I was numbed up for the treatment. Blood was drawn from my arm then run through the centrifuge to isolate the plasma. The plasma was smoothed onto my face, before the micro-needling began. Did it hurt? Well, no -
in fact I could have fallen asleep. While some practitioners stop here, Aquarius suggested pairing it with a beauty boosting treatment of hyaluronic injections to restore volume, and I was happy to oblige. This was more painful than the first treatment and was the only time blood was produced, leaving my skin feeling and looking sunburnt. The results? It was a few days before I could confidently leave the house in daylight (I experienced some bruising), but when I did, my skin looked like it was back from the dead: refined pores, reduced pigmentation and smoother skin were just the start. For the step-by-step journey head online.

His for Hacial What do you get when you combine a hair treatment with a facial? A Hacial. Facials are fabulous, who doesn’t love someone massaging all sorts of fabulous lotions and potions into us to make us look like a million bucks? The only down side is that after all those amazing products have been massaged onto your face, neck and décolletage, your hair can be a bit of a hot mess. It can also be a bit time consuming, so for busy people Brooklyn Beauty Bar has invented the ‘hacial’. It’s a completely fabulous bit of multi-tasking pampering. Luxuriate with a hair treatment and have a mini facial at the basin STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU
at the same time. Lie back while the massage chair works its magic on your back while your therapist gives your skin a great pick-me-up with cleanse, tone, exfoliate and mask and a hair treatment is hydrating your locks at the same time. The end result is gorgeous glossy healthy hair, beautifully styled and clear, fresh, dewy skin. Throw in a manicure while your hair is styled and BOOM! Grooming completed and you’re done and dusted in an hour.

Double chin, BE GONE! We caught up with the team at Perfectly Smooth to get the lowdown on the latest fat-blasting technology. READ MORE ONLINE
Having recently gained popularity, Submental is a treatment used to reduce that pesky double chin. Using a laser machine that permanently kills fat cells, destroying up to 24% in a single treatment. Submental is also effective when treating unwanted fat on the stomach, flanks, thighs and arms. Sounds too good to be true, right? Here, we answer all your questions. How many treatments do clients need to see results? Results can be seen in as little as 1 treatment. However, we usually recommend
2 or more treatments for optimal results depending on the client’s needs. Are there any visible side effects? Does it hurt? Mild swelling can occur under the chin for some clients, but this does not occur in the body treatment. As it is a laser there is definitely a component of heat and tingling sensation in the treatment but all of our clients have tolerated this with no concerns. Some of our clients feel nothing. How long does it take to see results? Results start to show within 6 weeks, final
results can be seen up to 6 months down the track. PERFECTLY SMOOTH 112 ALBION RD, WINDSOR P 3161 8408 PERFECTLYSMOOTH.COM.AU

A decade of epic-ness There’s no slowing down for Epic Hair. Opening the doors to their first salon in 2008, Epic Hair Designs recently celebrated their 10th anniversary in April, marking a decade of excellence in the industry. From humble beginnings in Kenmore, Epic has gone on to lead the industry in Brisbane with 12 high-end salons under its umbrella. “Here at Epic, we are more than just hairdressing. Our family of salons are renowned for crafting beautiful hair while creating a unique experience,” owner Brendan Mann says. “Our entire team are trained to deliver an unmatched consistent result. We have more Goldwell Master Colourists and Master Stylists than any other salon in Australia making us the go-to colour salon offering a great service in a beautiful and relaxed environment at a very
reasonable price.” The key to the success of the local business is in the quality of its skilled stylists who live and breathe hairdressing. “Our stylists are longstanding with Epic and are industry leaders who bring a wealth of knowledge in colouring, cutting, blondes, balayage, hair extensions, treatments and
men’s services,” Brendan says. The addition of a new Epic Hair Designs headquarters, due for completion in Ascot by mid-2018, with a state-of-the-art training facility will ensure the Epic star continues to rise. Watch this space! LOUISA DYSON DIRECTOR, ALICE + ALBERT P 0406 318 845 ALICEANDALBERT.COM.AU
The term ‘Personal Concierge’ is pretty unfamiliar. Put simply, it’s like having a Personal Assistant for your personal life. Someone to look after anything you don’t have time for, desire or skills to do. And that’s just what Louisa Dyson and her team at Alice + Albert do. “In simple terms, we literally take care of whatever is on our client’s to-do list which can be as mundane as the washing and grocery shopping via our weekly Home Butler service to coordinating cleaners, sourcing quotes for a renovation or booking a surprise trip for a loved one, packing your bags and feeding the cats whilst you are away via our Personal Concierge package of hours. The list really is endless. We allow our clients to stress less and live more,” Louisa says. “Our working days are never the same which is really great and certainly never dull!” After having been in the corporate world for 10 years Louisa had an opportunity to take a redundancy and felt like that was her final sign that she should start something of her own. “I’m not one to shy away from a challenge and I knew that this was my chance to have a go and if it didn’t work out, at least I could say I had tried!” It’s this determination, along with integrity and courtesy that also forms the core mission of Alice + Albert. “I try to surround myself with people who live their lives like this and I’m very lucky to have some wonderful friends and business colleagues who support and inspire me every day.”

JONATHAN FORD & TOM SWEEP DIRECTORS, DEPARTMENT GROUP, FACILITIES FITNESS & PINEAPPLE EXPRESS DEPARTMENTGROUP.COM
With over a decade working together, best mates Jonathan Ford and Tom Sweep launched their own business, Department Group, together in 2013, and have grown ever since. “We’re very lucky to do what we love for a living. We have manufactured our own lifestyle around what we’re passionate about,” Jonathan says. A full-service creative agency, Department Group work hard to ensure their clients offer genuine value and experiences which make them destinations in their own right. “With the amount of competition in the market, customers have become more savvy. They don’t want to just see it, now they want to feel something, taste something. It has to be so good that they’re going to share it on social media,” Tom adds. Driven by results, whether for their clients or for their own businesses, Department Group continues to expand. “Our marketing agency, Department, is currently going through a big shift as we target the property & luxury brand market. We have an exciting expansion plan for Pineapple Express & Facilities. We also have a new project which has been in the works for quite some time which we’re excited to announce soon,” Tom says. Perhaps the secret to their success is how well they work together. “Sometimes it just works. We’re a bit of a yin and yang combo,” Jonathan says.

PRANAY MAGAN FOUNDER, FERRADINI PROPERTY GROUP WATERFRONT PLACE, 1 EAGLE ST, BRISBANE P 3184 9149 FERRADINIPROPERTY.COM.AU
With extensive experience in sourcing commercial real estate acquisitions, funds management, research and asset management, Pranay Magan founded Ferradini Property Group in 2015 when he identified a niche market to provide a commercial property funds management service to private clients. “Commercial property investment for me has always had a long-term outlook combined with a steady income stream, which provides stable financial security. There is a sense of fulfilment when the tenant’s business grows and they meet their benchmarks and business goals,” Pranay says. With access to market-leading resources and intelligence, Ferradini prides itself on its ability to provide sustainable returns to their investors. The expertise that Pranay has in property gives him the capacity to advise and manage commercial property acquisitions and divestments across all sectors, predominately in Queensland and Victoria. “Our objective is to deliver a sustainable and growing income stream to our clients. To achieve this, we look for sectors and assets that have potential to deliver real rental growth,” he says. Ferradini exists to take out the guess work for those looking to invest in commercial real estate. They do all the third-party coordinating with accountants and solicitors and due diligence, right down to presenting final offers. “My role incorporates being responsible for overseeing the due diligence process, managing and implementing policies and strategies for the investment,” he says. “I have a very hands-on approach when dealing with the asset management component of the investment. This is important for both the client and tenant to make them feel valued.” In addition to Ferradini, Pranay founded Casa Asset Management to provide proactive asset management services to his clients, either in conjunction to the acquisition service or as an isolated service. Both these companies work hand-in-hand as the services they provide complement each other.

PETER HULL MANAGING DIRECTOR, FITSTOP AUSTRALIA FSFITNESS.COM.AU @PETERHULL
After running his own group fitness training facilities for two years, Peter Hull fell in love with a few of the business fundamentals that were resulting in success for the business, the trainers that worked for him and also his members. “My number one reason for building the Fitstop Fitness franchise was to allow other passionate fitness professionals the opportunity to live their dream owning a successful fitness business,” Peter says. “Learning the importance of creating culture, supporting personal growth and creating a model that was not exchanging time for money I knew that I needed to share this with more people.” Peter’s motivation stems from working in an industry that is typically very lonely, and his desire to change that for fellow franchise owners. “After learning there is a way to not only make a positive impact to a larger community, but also build a great team around your business, enjoy holidays and family life that it needed to be shared. The fitness industry needed a shake-up, it was time that fitness professionals had the same level of support that they gave their clients.” Peter and his team have systemised the entire business in a way that it provides an education platform and process to all Fitstop owners, allowing them the same opportunity he had. With the Fitstop family growing every day, he has big plans for the future.

The Brisbane property landscape continues to grow and evolve, and at the forefront of that is Ben Griffin of Geon Property. The much anticipated Albion Train Station redevelopment is one of a number of exciting projects that the in-demand company have in the works, which will see an integration of the train station with residential, retail and commercial spaces to deliver an exciting community asset, in what is an Australian first. “Brisbane is an exciting place to be developing now and in the next 15 – 20 years,” Griffin says. “Brisbane City Council has positioned Brisbane as Australia’s new world city. There are many developers like us with a global perspective, pulling inspiration and experiences from around the globe.” The key to Geon Property’s success, he insists, is the tight and capable team around him. “You have to show up every day. We try to be in business as we are in life.” Despite all of his many professional achievements, Ben is most proud of his family. “Family is everything to me,” he says. “The opportunity for Geon Property to bring the Albion Train Station redevelopment to fruition is just one of my greatest achievements.” When he’s not managing developments and looking after his five children, Ben loves nothing more than getting out on his bike. “I love cycling. Any spare hour I have, I try to get out on the road,” he says.

MATT CUNLIFFE OWNER MANAGER, MORTGAGE CHOICE BRISBANE CITY & BRISBANE NORTH 355 QUEEN ST, BRISBANE P 3211 7744 MORTGAGECHOICE.COM.AU/MATTCUNLIFFE
Matt Cunliffe stepped into the world of business ownership at 29, having been an employee in the banking and finance sector for some 11 years. In 2015, he purchased the Mortgage Choice business of which he had previously been employed by. “I had a real hunger to take the business, for which I had poured my heart into as an employee, from strength to strength and see it succeed to the very best of its ability,” he says. “Getting into business was a pursuit of mine so that I could be the determining factor in obtaining the financial freedom for my family and I, to enable us to have the lifestyle that we desire.” For Matt, success in business ownership is not just in profitability, but also in the personal growth of the individuals that make up the business. “The desire to grow a successful team and in turn a successful business was a major reason for me entering into business ownership as both factors are measurable and would create a positive outcome to the lives of not only my family but also the entire team.” “It may sound idealistic, but my greatest motivation is to see the individuals that are employed in our businesses achieve their work and personal goals assisted by their growth within our company. Nothing pleases me more than having a satisfied staff member.”

Everyone thought I was crazy and that I wouldn’t succeed. Three salons later, here I am!” “The desire to build an empire, a brand that has a legacy and changes the status quo in hairdressing, that’s what drives me. I want to inspire, impact, and change lives. Whether that be helping a staff member achieve their goals, or a client in my salon that wants a new style or colour. TOM LUSCH DIRECTOR & CEO, PLATYPUS GRAPHICS 58-62 BRICKYARD RD, GEEBUNG P 3352 0300 PLATYPUSGRAPHICS.COM.AU
As a boy, Tom Lusch grew up in his parent’s small print business, spending a good part of school holidays wrapping parcels, cleaning up and stacking paper. “I hated it, but when faced with getting a job after school had finished, I did an aptitude test at TAFE, which lead me to getting an apprenticeship as a printing machinist in Melbourne. I soon learned to appreciate the passion and the challenge of all things printed,” Tom says. In 1980, after working in several different printing houses, Tom moved to Brisbane and eventually started his own business, Platypus Graphics, five years later. What was initially a one-man show, has since become a 24-hour operational national business with roughly 100 employees. “I’ve seen a lot of technological advancements over the years,” he says. “The future is a digital world, so our business has been evolving to suit. At present, we ship out over 100 million packages a year. Today people are placing orders and purchasing online via Platypus Connect and this makes turn around fast and logistically efficient.” This attitude has seen Platypus win many industry awards and maintain its position as the number one private print business in Queensland producing quality print, packaging and publications. “Persist to be the best. ROB ROWE FOUNDER & CEO, UNITA TRAFALGAR LANE, 855 STANLEY ST, WOOLLOONGABBA P 1300 659 399 UNITA.COM.AU
With a reputation for doing things differently, Rob Rowe has certainly forged his own path in the construction industry with his company, Unita. A national market leader and the largest interior fit-out business in Brisbane, Unita offers a variety of construction services from shopfitting, design and manufacturing. Founded in 2004, by then 23-year-old Rob, the company has had an incredible trajectory in recent years, not a bad feat for a company that started out with just a red ute and a lot of hard work. Having previously worked as a builder, becoming increasingly frustrated when he saw many failed businesses, Rob saw an opportunity in the market to create a full-service construction company and help clients build successful businesses. “Nothing gets me more excited than helping someone explore their potential and possibility,” Rowe says. “Builders like to take money, I like to help build and add value.” With a string of awards under his belt, including Brisbane Young Entrepreneur and Telstra Business Awards, Rob is most proud of his resilience when facing tough times. “None of the awards really matter that much in the grand scheme of things.” “There’s a lot of tough times you have in business, and what really matters is how you deal with that.” “We just had our best year in business ever, off the back of some very interesting years. The bad years teach you how to have the good ones. You have to have those knocks sometimes to make you appreciate the good ones,” he says. “My biggest achievement is still being in business after 14 years.”
