Wow, where did April go? With all of the public holidays recently I’m sure there are many Brisbanites feeling a little dusty after a series of glorious long weekends. I certainly feel that I’ve had my fair share of fun, catching up with friends and getting out and about. However, the parties are far, far from over! May is going to be just as busy, as Brisbane ups the ante with so many exceptional events, carnivals and more. In this month’s issue we kick off the fun with our Channel 7 Winter Racing Carnival cover and fashion spread, shot on location at the newly reopened Eagle Farm - welcome back! Featuring the gorgeous (and super funny) Sammie O’Brien, this year’s Channel 7 Winter Racing Carnival Ambassador, this gal sure rocks a racing outfit, nailing every look (styled by Westfield Chermside stylist and ex-Style staffer, Annabel Falco). If you’re looking for outfit inspiration, turn to page 16 for the lowdown of each race day dress code. Yass! Or is that Yassou!?! Our all-time favourite Greek honey puffs are back again this month at Paniyiri Greek Festival - one of the happiest days on Brisbane’s event calendar. After a day of dancing, feasting and entertainment, why not check out our West End feature (pg 30) for places to kick on with friends. Believe me, Ouzo has a way of bringing old and new friends together. Opa! Fish Lane Festival, The Dancing CEO’s, the Brisbane Art and Design Festival (BAD) … it’s all happening. So book a babysitter, splash out on a new outfit, get the crew together and let’s go have some fun Brissy!

FAILING

Fabulously If you’ve ever run out of fuel on the highway or reversed into a Range Rover, then you’re in good company with Brisbane babe Phoebe Parsons. The difference? She’s turned her misfortunes into a hugely successful podcast, Confessions Of A Twenty Something Train Wreck.

June 2017 and have been signed with Nova ever since and here we are in season 8, 70 episodes later (with more in the pipeline). I still pinch myself and find it hard to believe some of the things it’s achieved in under two years. I’ve cracked #1 on iTunes (soz Oprah), been nominated for awards, done live shows and written columns. Can you describe a moment recently when you lived up to your podcast title? Take your pick. The day I was leaving to pick up my new car and reversed into a Ranger. I’d agreed to trade-in my car for $2,000 but wrote it off in the reverse and ended up only getting $100, which to be honest, I think was just a sympathy cheque. $1 for every tear I cried that day? Or the day I got a flat tyre on the motorway in peak hour traffic. My spare tyre was also flat, so I called my housemate, dropped her a pin on the side of the motorway and she delivered me hers. Why do you think twenty-somethings relate to you so much? I believe that authenticity creates community, and that’s something I’ve made a conscious decision to stay true to since day one. When I was younger, my expectations of my twenties were completely warped based on what was being portrayed by the women I looked up to on social media. We live in a world that’s so heavily filtered, and I wish I had someone back then who told me that life isn’t always what you see on Instagram. Our society is obsessed with the idea of perfection, but the sooner you realise that perfection doesn’t exist, the sooner you’ll stop trying to achieve it and actually start to enjoy life. What exciting things are on the agenda for the next five years? Ripley’s Believe it or not, I actually just did a live show at The Melbourne Comedy Festival, so hopefully it got enough lols to secure me some more live shows this year. I’m also on the hunt for a stronger USB so I can finish what I started. Train Wreck for the New York Times Best Seller list 2020?

FAST FIRE QUESTIONS

Describe your childhood: When I grew up, I wanted to be the Tooth Fairy, but I must have mumbled what I was trying to manifest, because somehow, I ended up a train wreck instead. I’m a Brisbane girl born-and-bred and I grew up desperately wanting to be a writer/ performer. I was one of 25 accepted into the Australian Dance Performance Institute to study Musical Theatre when I was 17, but plot twist - ended up turning it down to complete a Bachelor of Broadcast Journalism instead. In your experience, what is the most interesting part of being in your twenties? For me, it was realising that the most successful role I’d ever play was myself. I think in your twenties you spend a lot of time searching for your ‘thing’ and trying to figure out what your purpose is and if you’re on the right path. I tried a lot of things and have worked in everything from TV presenting and magazine editing right through to public relations, and while I feel very lucky to have been given those opportunities, I was always speaking or writing in someone else’s voice despite having my own (and a very loud one at that). It wasn’t until I started Train Wreck, and I finally began speaking my truth that ironically, I ended up finding my biggest success and something that’s brought me the most fulfilment. Can you describe the moment you decided to start Confessions Of A Twenty Something Train Wreck? The initial idea was actually to write a book about what a Train Wreck my life was, but in a case of art imitating life, the USB I’d started to write it on snapped clean in half. So it was back to the drawing board. I saw that Nova was advertising a competition called Podquest, aimed at unearthing up and coming podcasting talent. I had no podcasting experience, but I’m a doer, so I grabbed my friend’s ex-Tinder flame, a cheap bottle of red and recorded an episode in the basement of my 4-person share house. I ended up winning the competition in

Best foot forward We chat to two of the CEOs taking part in one of the biggest annual charity events to happen in Brisbane.

AARON MCALLISTER FITAZFK GYM

PENNY WOLFF WOLFF COFFEE ROASTERS

Why did you want to be involved with Dancing CEOs? I love to dance and it’s a great cause. I’ve been aware of Women’s Legal Services QLD for over three years now after I went to a Dancing CEOs event myself. I’ve always tossed up the idea of actually dancing, and this year I decided, why not!? What do you want to gain from this experience? I want to learn, give back and make people happy. As clichéd as it might sound, these are the things that really fuel me day to day. To be able to do this on a bigger scale with Dancing CEOs is an amazing opportunity that I am glad I took up. What is your connection to Women’s Legal Services QLD and why do you want to support them? I’ve always made it a priority to stick up for the vulnerable. I think using physical violence against someone is wrong, especially if they’re weaker than you. This is a great opportunity to raise awareness around a real problem in Australian society, as there are many women in need of help. Dancing CEOs not only raises funds, but also awareness around the issue at stake. Do you think you’ll continue to dance once this is over? I’m always the one up for a good dance on the dance floor… so of course!

Why did you want to be involved with Dancing CEOs? The story of how Women’s Legal Services began really inspired me. A group of women lawyers who saw unsafe outcomes occurring in court, and saw women experiencing violence who didn’t know their rights, started a phone line on the veranda of a women’s shelter in 1984. Since these humble beginnings, WLS has now helped over 80,000 women and their kids to safety over 35 years. Like many, I’ve seen the negative effects of domestic violence, and as a past teacher, I witnessed the effects on many innocent children. Now today as a business owner, I have assisted employees seeking help when they had nowhere to turn. Domestic and family violence does not discriminate and is everyone’s business. My mission is to help women and children escape domestic violence. What do you want to gain from this experience? I always try to challenge myself both personally and professionally and as a Dancing CEO this has certainly placed me in a state of discomfort. The opportunity to stand together with other dynamic fellow CEOs and make a stance on this pertinent issue really resonated with me. Not to

PAGE 12

T mention being able to creatively challenge myself and have a lot of fun along the way. Do you think you’ll continue to dance once this is over? Absolutely! As an avid ex-ballerina from my younger years, I had forgotten how much fun it was to dance. Mad Dance House has reignited this for me, and I’ve really enjoyed the choreographic journey. I’m still working hard at it and pretending to “dance like no one is watching.” MAY 2019

Ladies Day

4.

1.

Saturday 1 June

Go feminine and floral for Ladies Day, with tones of pink, blush, gold and maroon. A modest length dress is always a winner, as well as closed-toe shoes and a dainty clutch.

1.

2.

Seasoned race-goer and Fashions on the Field maven Milano Imai explains how easy it is to nail your outfit this winter racing carnival. DOS AND DON’TS Abide by the seasonal rules and wear felt, leather, wool or trans seasonal millinery. Wear closed toe shoes, and ensure you dress for the day and the weather. Don’t wear sinamay or straw, avoid thin straps or overexposed shoulders, and don’t forget to have fun! STYLING ADVICE Never underestimate what a fabulous piece of millinery can do; invest in your millinery and make sure it complements your overall look and doesn’t overpower it. Consider your accessories – they can really give your outfit an on-trend vibe.

FASHIONS ON THE FIELD Enjoy the process of planning and creating your outfit. When you get on stage, have fun and be proud of what you’ve put together. Take your time on the catwalk so the judges can see all the elements of your outfit, always remember to smile. Go with friends so you can enjoy the day, give others compliments, take a photo of your outfit (so I can repost it later) and if the judges don’t choose you, don’t let it ruin your day! FOR THE MEN Don’t wear pants that are too tight, and aim to match your colours – don’t have a brown belt and black shoes. It’s also just as important for you to consider your accessories; would a pocket square, lapel flower, tie pin, or a hat suit your outfit?

TURNING HEADS Queen of millinery, Viktoria Novak, chats to us about the upcoming Winter Racing Carnival, and what inspires her to continually create stunning headwear. Tell us about your history with millinery: I became a milliner by pure accident. After graduating from college, I pursued a career in Interior Design and worked in the Interior world for a little while, but then I decided to study Fashion Design. It was my intent to become a costume designer, but during my studies I was placed into a millinery class simply because I forgot to select my own elective. It turns out that fate had its way and I was able to discover my gift for creating headpieces and crowns. What made you fall in love with creating your own pieces? I fell in love with millinery because it enables the wearer to show true personality through the form of the creation, style, design and theme that is a talking point at major race days. Having the ability to help style and be a part of someone’s special day is my favourite part of the job. I am a sentimental designer and really connect with my clients who also have the same philosophy. This year I will celebrate 13 years in business. What inspires you to create a new collection? I tend to draw inspiration from things like the natural shapes formed by nature and materials such as leather, metals, velvets, Swarovski crystals, fresh water pearls and jewels. What is one element of your job that people are surprised to discover? People tend to be surprised when they hear that I make everything by hand. I haven’t changed my production process for 13 years. I believe in quality work over quantity and for now, I have no interest in mass producing my label. With the Winter Carnival just around the corner, what styles are you excited to launch? I’ve just released my new Audrey PAGE 18

collection. I’m loving this collection because it’s a beautiful combination of crowns featuring bows, jewels and pearls, that are all handmade from velvets. It’s the perfect winter headpiece to add a beautiful finish to your outfit. Tell us about the regal and opulent style your designs are so known for. I definitely look for inspiration through old paintings, especially 18th Century art. I love to design and create my works in a way that pays homage to the yesteryear and vintage styles. I’m very much about the finer details and I am definitely a more-is-more designer. Who is one Australian icon that always nails trackside fashion? Kate Waterhouse, always so classic, elegant and stylish. She is the epitome of racing style. If you could design a piece for anyone in the world, who would it be? Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Lady Gaga and Iris Apfel. Each of these would be a challenge, which I would love to accept as they are all such different style icons. Which do you enjoy more – the summer or winter carnival? I personally prefer winter over summer purely for the fashion, as everyone looks so elegant and classy. You can layer and have more fun with your outfit and add rich tones to your look, whereas spring/ summer is all about lighter fabrics, pastel tones and floral prints. Tell us one millinery or race wear trend you’re obsessed with, and one you wish would die out. I’m obsessed with crowns because they make the race-goer feel powerful and regal. I would prefer not to see turbans and top knots at the race track. Also, a scarf tied up in a pony is not considered to be millinery.

THE CORPORATE

CATWALK SABA Creative Director Elisha Hopkinson shares her style tips for nailing corporate fashion. Confidence is key - if you are feeling great, it will shine through. ELISHA HOPKINSON

What are some staple pieces we should always have in our wardrobe? Every wardrobe needs a basic white tee, a white collared shirt, jeans and a great blazer or jacket. A flattering midi skirt and little black dress are a must as well. It’s also important to buy quality staples that you can mix and match, and always check fabrication to ensure it will last. Which items should you let yourself splurge on, and which ones can you save on? The key item to invest in is a tailored, classic suit. Look for quality and ensure it fits you perfectly - worn together or as separates, it will be one of the most versatile investments in your wardrobe and will see you through season after season. Dress down your suit blazer by pairing it back with a basic tee, jeans and sneakers,

or opt for a dressier look with your tailored suit pants worn with a dressy cami and heels. Go with a brand you know you can rely on, as there’s nothing worse than a jacket that isn’t cut correctly. Don’t invest too much in tops, especially if they are just simple layering pieces. There are some great basics out there that won’t break the bank. Is it acceptable to wear open toed shoes? Yes - just as long as you have a good pedicure! Are there any accessories you recommend to give personality to an outfit? Statement earrings. It’s such an easy way to add a touch of colour to your outfit, especially if you’re not as daring when it comes to wearing bold colours or prints. What key colours should we stick to? Black is a must-have staple of course, but neutral tones such as camel or soft grey are

! NEW

Saba Pippa slim check pant $199

always great as a base too. Especially coming into the cooler months, having neutral staples adds some light and warmth to your wardrobe, rather than just all black. Navy is also a good foundation, but personally, I’m moving away from navy in favour of neutrals. If you build your wardrobe around a few core colours, then you can add in a pop of colour or key trend piece quite easily. I’m loving all the animal print coming through this season. Any bonus tips for hair and makeup? Keep it simple, natural and polished and you can’t go wrong. My favourite product at the moment is the Kevyn Aucoin Mascara – your lashes will stay put all day without smudging. Any other style advice, tips or tricks? Confidence is key – if you are feeling great, the confidence will shine through no matter what you’re wearing!

A family affair This Mother’s Day, we hear from Lannah Dunn as she celebrates 34 years and four generations of Lannah Dunn Fine Jewellery. From strength to strength, the tale of Lannah Dunn Fine Jewellery is a story that will leave you in awe. With a rich history of curating jewellery collections both new and old, the family behind Lannah Dunn Fine Jewellery has earned a reputation as one of Australia’s foremost antique jewellery authorities. Established in 1985, the business remains true to its South East Queensland heritage with the original flagship store in Toowoomba and a second in Brisbane CBD. It is clear upon visiting the stores why they are destinations for lovers of fine jewellery - a mission Lannah herself has sought to uphold since its establishment. “Supported by a team of expert artisans, diamond graders and gemmologists, we put

our name behind every piece on offer with many of our antique pieces being curated from rare European collections,” says Lannah. From stories of Lannah and her mother embarking on their first buying trip in the late 1970’s, delving into the whimsical world of royal jewels across Europe, to welcoming the fourth generation into the fold, Mother’s Day holds a special place in Lannah’s heart. “The business is a family affair, from design in our specialist workshop to sourcing the antiques and managing the operations. It’s rare for an entire family to be so heavily

involved, and for this I feel incredibly blessed,” says Lannah. Offering exceptionally designed Australian South Sea Pearl and Fine White Diamond jewellery, as well as museum quality antique pieces, you are guaranteed to find something special for Mum this Mother’s Day at Lannah Dunn Fine Jewellery. “We settle for nothing less than the best, and take great pleasure offering our collections to customers.” LANNAH DUNN FINE JEWELLERY SHOP 7B 215 QUEEN ST, CBD P 3221 1588 LANNAHDUNN.COM

est Village will be much more than a collection of residential apartments. It will be parklands, an art gallery, restaurants, specialty stores, a gym and cafés – a community. Just one kilometre from the Brisbane CBD, West Village covers 2.6 hectares of land and, upon completion, will comprise of eight contemporary apartment buildings alongside entertainment and retail hubs. Stage One was completed late last year, with The Common the first public space to open - a mixture of laneways, open green spaces and a parkside dining precinct. Two residential buildings were also launched in Stage One, featuring over 300 apartments. Arcadia Residences, pictured, is stage two of the project, scheduled for completion late this year and will be made up of 53 exclusive residences. In response to the demand for larger style apartments to accommodate families wanting the comforts and amenities of apartment living, without cramped spaces and additional debt, Arcadia Residences will predominantly feature three and four bedroom apartments, as well as smaller one and two bedroom apartments. The larger residences have been specifically designed to accommodate families, boasting three metre stone bench tops, double ovens and Miele appliances, a butler’s pantry, and baths in the master suites. Both stages incorporate the collaboration of talented Australian artists, as a part of West Village’s commitment to bringing art onto the site and investing in the local community. Arcadia Residences sees renowned Japanese-Australian fashion designer Akira Isogawa as the design consultant. As one of Australia’s most celebrated and successful fashion designers, his aesthetic draws heavily on traditional Japanese designs and techniques, making the spaces he’s designed emotionally and spiritually connected to people, allowing residents to feel comfortable and as if they’re surrounded by beauty. Arcadia Residences is scheduled for completion this year. PAGE 35

Day on a plate We follow dietitian Claudia Cramer around for the day, to see what she gets up to and how she fuels her body. 6AM: Training at Fitstop Windsor I like to start my day positively by exercising in a group-style training session. 6.45AM: Post workout soy piccolo I aim to only have one or two coffees a day, and try to have them before lunch so it doesn’t disrupt my production of melatonin, the hormone which regulates sleep towards the end of the day. 7.30AM: Multi-grain bread topped with avocado, egg, pesto, and sauerkraut Having a good quality source of carbohydrates is beneficial post-workout, as it optimizes your training session. I add an egg for a source of protein, pesto for a healthy fat, and sauerkraut for some extra gut love. 10AM: Protein pudding, dried apples and apricots I aim to predominantly eat snacks with higher STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

protein and fat levels to keep me full between meals. My protein pudding consists of protein powder, water, coconut yoghurt, seeds, and nut butter, and I like to have dried fruit as they’re a great natural sugar that can be an alternative to highly processed sweets. 12 NOON: Homemade tofu curry with vegetables and coconut rice I always try to have a nutrient dense meal with a good source of carbohydrate, like rice, and vegetables to ensure I’m getting plenty of fibre and micronutrients. The tofu is great for getting in my protein and healthy fats. 3PM: Stewed apples with cinnamon and coconut yoghurt, two coconut rolled dates, a few squares of dark chocolate, and rice crackers with peanut butter I have these because they are naturally sweetened, minimally processed, nutrient dense, and satisfy any sweet cravings.

7PM: Gut bowl This is a mix of stir fried vegetables like red and green cabbage, silver beet or kale, onion, spices, ghee, pan-fried tofu, pesto, hummus, sauerkraut and seeds. It’s a nutrient dense dish with a good source of protein, healthy fats, spices, and fermented products for gut health. It’s also high in fibre, which is great for overall health of the digestive system. PAGE 37

Motherly love in a cup

Winter Racing Carnival

It is time to reconnect

As the masterminds behind the Red Velvet Hot Chocolate exclusive to Dandelion & Driftwood Cafe, the team at Wolff Coffee Roasters will be serving this famous beverage at Big Bad Wolff Espresso Bar from 1 May, in celebration of Mother’s Day. The beverage is made from the finest selection of Ghana Cocoa, which has been produced with a long fermentation process to produce a sweet, light chocolate with berry and vanilla notes. The cocoa is complimented further with the addition of artisan ingredients to replicate that red velvet cupcake experience. Featuring your favourite milk, a gorgeous red colour, a creamy and fluffy texture popping with flavour, and topped with luscious cream cheese frosting - it’s a must-try this May. Wolff Coffee Roasters will be sharing the motherly love to all, with $2 from every Red Velvet Hot Chocolate sold going to Women’s Legal Service QLD.

With the BRC Winter Racing Carnival upon us, it’s time to consider what’s stylish this year. While it’s not normally suggested to follow the trends, you should be aware of them and try to adapt them to your own personal style. Green suits are cool at the moment, with popular shades including olive and forest green. But be careful, as not every shade is for every skin tone. Sports jackets are also an on-trend choice, as the traditional suit is no longer an absolute necessity. Separates are incredibly popular, and sports jackets are great for their versatility. A three piece suit is a great option for raceday if you’re going for something more sophisticated. Try to mix things up and make it a little more interesting with an odd vest or one in a complimenting colour. Texture is also something we can’t get enough of. Combine texture within your outfit for a standout look, or embrace the rust colour trend for an adventurous look.

Take some time out this week for a date night, just the two of you. Call the sitter, throw on something nice, and go out for a memorable evening where you can have some time away from everything to just reconnect. Life can get so busy nowadays, and it can often feel like you no longer have the time to do the things you enjoy, especially going out for a date. But, we often don’t realise how starved we are for that connection and intimacy until much later, so it’s important to take some time to ground yourself, check in on each other, get to know what thoughts are occupying each other’s minds and really listen to everything you both have to say. You might learn something new, or just solidify what you already know and love about each other. Step back into the honeymoon phase and leave all the mess behind – even if it’s just for a couple of hours one evening this week.

Can we prevent crooked teeth?

It might be all in your genes

Office procedures

It was once thought that crooked teeth were solely a genetic trait, and it was your parents who were to blame for a crowded mouth. However, recent research now shows us that this isn’t necessarily the case. Our faces and jaws are genetically programmed to grow large enough to allow our 32 adult teeth to fit without crowding. So, why do so many people have misaligned teeth? Our environment affects the expression of our genes, so if children are mouth breathers or eat a soft diet, their jaws may not grow to their full genetic potential. Therefore, when adult teeth erupt into the mouth, there’s less room and crowding can occur. When it comes to preventing crooked teeth, we must start at birth by encouraging breastfeeding, limiting dummy/bottle use, ensuring our children are nasal breathing, and are eating a semi-hard to hard diet from the get go. This will give our children the best chance of preventing crooked teeth.

The development of varicose veins is all about your genes - that’s DNA genes, not the blue ones! Varicose veins develop due to vein incompetence, which is largely caused by leaky valves in the vein. This is the part you can blame your grandparents for, if you have leaky valves, chances are you inherited them from your parents and grandparents. If both of your parents have varicose veins, you have a 90% chance of developing them. However, lifestyle choices can help slow down venous disease, like moderate exercise, a healthy weight and wearing compression stockings. Developing varicose veins might be impossible to avoid, but there are now more treatment options available to help get rid of them. With EndoVenous Laser Ablation, Vein Glue and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy, even the most severe varicose veins can be treated in a minimally invasive fashion.

While larger plastic surgery procedures that require a full anaesthetic must be performed in an accredited hospital setting, there are a number of minor cosmetic procedures that can be safely and effectively done within the office setting under a local anaesthesia alone, including upper eyelid reductions, direct brow lifts, lip lifts, and minor nose and ear corrections. Patients who have local anaesthesia procedures in the office are much less anxious about their surgery, and feel much more in control being awake and in a familiar setting. Office based procedures are time saving, and cost effective as there are no additional hospital and anaesthetist costs involved, and patients can recover quicker as they are not subject to the side effects of anaesthetic drugs. Any surgery or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified medical practitioner.

New technology Dr Matthew Peters from Valley Plastic Surgery explains the technical advancements now being seen in breast augmentation surgery. Dr Matthew Peters has just returned from a meeting in California, where 24 plastic surgeons from across the globe discussed and assessed emerging technologies and prototypes that are now available for breast augmentation surgery, and what they will mean for patients. Dr Peters understands there’s a vast range of knowledge amongst patients when it comes to breast augmentation techniques. While many patients are focused on the technique alone, there’s now a shift occurring, with more interest being paid to the type of implants used and their safety. Recent research has determined that certain types of breast implants are linked to a rare form of cancer called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma. Another concern present in today’s literature is Breast Implant Illness, a STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

symptom complex described in relation to the presence of breast implants. When coupled with our increasing awareness of our own role in maintaining health and wellness, it’s no surprise that the technological details of products such as breast implants in use are being questioned. There now exists multiple breast implant surfaces, gel types and behaviours, and of course, shapes. A detailed consultation and assessment with a FRACS specialist plastic surgeon will provide you with your available implant options and the associated risks. The look you desire, how your body and the implant will interact, and the degree of physical activity that you undertake will all be considered in determining what might suit. Be open and honest, and ask as many questions as you need to. It is elective surgery and you have to be

confident with your decision. Any surgery or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified medical practitioner. READ MORE ONLINE VALLEY PLASTIC SURGERY 51 BALLOW ST, FORTITUDE VALLEY P 3488 8118 VALLEYPLASTICSURGERY.COM.AU

The perfect concoction Brooklyn Beauty Bar is taking the next step when it comes to customised beauty, now creating Dermal Cocktails to cater to everyone’s skin needs. Is there anything more lovely than perfect skin? It’s what we all aspire to, but few are lucky enough to have a flawless complexion. For most of us age, environment, sun, stress, blemishes, scarring, pigmentation and wear and tear play havoc on our skin on a day to day basis. However, aspirations for beautiful skin can be realised. Brooklyn Beauty Bar has developed a range of bespoke dermal treatment therapies to improve your skin, so much so you may consider wearing BB Cream as a thing of the past. Brooke and her team have developed a menu of high result dermal treatments called “Dermal Cocktails” that are designed to target specific skin problems. Depending on your skin, after three or four procedures they can provide results that can last up to a year, with PAGE 42

each treatment taking approximately 40-60 minutes. The favourite among the Brooklyn Beauty Bar staff and clients is the BB Peptide Infusion. This treatment gives your skin the effect of wearing BB Cream even when you’re not. Throw the foundation away and bask in the glow of your own even toned skin, with the best results seen after six treatments. For whitening, brightening and evening out skin tones there is the BB Pearl lightening infusion, or for scarring and ageing there’s the Stemcell Infusion. For those a little bit older, you can choose from the anti-wrinkle or Vitamin C infusions, which are ideal for treating deeper wrinkles. For an all over glow, choose the Hyaluron Infusion, as it gets rid of dead skin cells and smooths the complexion.

The complex infusions penetrate the skin using skin-needling, a non-invasive procedure with no down time. This technique uses a monitored, safe levelled dermapen that gently penetrates deep into the epidermal layers, allowing for long lasting results. Man’s Best Friend Clinical psychologist Dr John Barletta explains the therapeutic benefits of having a pet Growing up on a farm, a dog was for security and the cat was for vermin. Oh, how things have changed. Pets, or companion animals, now provide a range of health and psychological benefits to people and families, both young and old. Interacting with pets boosts our internal ‘feel-good’ chemicals, which in turn enhances our social skills and relationships. Additionally, pets can potentially decrease our blood pressure and heart rate, boost our immune system, and raise our tolerance for pain. Pets can also help to lower our stress and anger levels, and improve your mood. Our pets easily become a part of our everyday lives, and can also be particularly helpful to children, those with special needs, people who have been traumatised, older folks, and those living by themselves. Adding to this, our success in taking responsibility in caring for our pets can contribute to our

own self-esteem and positive, emotional wellbeing. When considering a pet for companionship, wellbeing, or therapy, you must consider your physical living situation, your lifestyle, and the inevitable costs associated with pet-food, toys, equipment and health and veterinary expenses. Asking your friends who already have pets about their experiences is a great way to start, as well as talking with a veterinarian or reputable breeder to learn about the particular characteristics of different animals or breeds. Whether the goal is to improve the social, emotional, physical, or cognitive functioning of yourself or those you love, a well-considered, appropriately-chosen companion animal can bring a vast array of benefits for many years to come.

Born beautiful Experienced dentist Dr Anne-Maree Cole explains how it’s not just our genetics that affect our facial outcome. We are all born with the genetic capability of developing a beautiful face. While symmetry, balance and proportion help to increase facial attractiveness, we usually only focus on the outside areas of our face like the skin and lips, and forget about the underlying bony structure and muscles. How our face develops can often rely on a balance between our genes and our environment. To develop our face to its genetic potential, we need to ensure that we are maintaining four key steps. The first is to ensure we’re keeping our lips together and our tongue up in the roof of our mouths when we are not talking or eating. The second and third are to breathe through the nose and aim to swallow correctly, and the fourth is to STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

chew well, and eat a semi-hard diet. These crucial functions help to create correct jaw development, and with that comes optimum facial development. When you’re breathing and functioning physiologically, the upper jaw grows broad and forward. The lower jaw responds similarly, growing plenty of room for all of your teeth. Mouth breathing is the most important factor to consider during facial development, as when the messages genes receive change from what is expected, so does the outcome, so when you’re not breathing right, your jaw will not grow correctly.

If our faces have developed well, not only do all of our 32 adult teeth fit in a straight line, but our faces are more likely to be symmetrical, proportioned, more attractive and most importantly, healthier! THE FUTURE OF SKINCARE Born in Byron Bay, Biologi is the world’s first 100% active single-ingredient skincare range that is revolutionising the industry. But, Biologi isn’t just another ‘green brand.’ WORDS BY GRACIE CLOUGH The range was founded by renowned skincare chemist, Ross Macdougald who is on a mission to prove that through science, natural and organic products are effective. We sat down with Biologi’s Managing Director, Lucy Kuper, to learn more about the brand. ROSS MACDOUGALD

PAGE 44

For those who are unfamiliar with Biologi, tell us a bit about the brand. Biologi is an Australian skincare brand that offers the only 100% active, water-soluble plant extract range in the world. Each of the Biologi serums are extracted from a single native plant; finger lime, Davidson plum and Kakadu plum. Using a revolutionary extraction system; Biologi mimics the plant’s internal closed process to extract serums that work in the bottle as they do in their unique cellular environment. These active-ingredient serums have a profound effect on the skin, changing it on a cellular level and delivering on the promise that the product truly works. Where is Biologi made? Biologi is proud to be made in Australia, ethically sourcing ingredients from the Byron Bay and NSW regions of Australia. Biologi source all of their ingredients locally and sustainably and control their whole production process from plant to bottle. Can you tell us about the studies showing Biologi’s effectiveness? Biologi taps into the theory of Epigenetics by changing skin on a cellular level, permitting us to ‘turn back on’ skin cells and allow them to work at their most effective level. Through Epigenetics, we now have the ability to understand a human’s genetic makeup and create groundbreaking skincare formulas that impact cellular health and we can look at helping change gene expression patterns over time. The Biologi line currently consists of three serums; do you have any plans to release more products in the future? Yes we do! We’re excited to announce that we’re about to launch our new Bqk Radiance Serum, that specifically targets pigmentation. Maintaining our single plant ingredient

roots, Biologi’s new Bqk Serum is a morning and night ritual combination that includes two separate serums to help improve the appearance of skin pigmentation. If someone could only pick one product from your range, what would it be and why? The Biologi Bf Serum is a hero product in our range because it works on all skin types and can be used on all areas of the body and face for hydration (even on your lips and hair!) The Biologi Bf Serum is produced from the extract of Australian finger lime. What is a fact about the skin and/or skincare that people would be surprised to know about? A big one that stands out in my mind is the term ‘naturally derived’ seen on a lot of skincare products. The term ‘naturally derived’ was created by some clever marketing folk who understand the power of clean and green beauty. In a basic sense, ‘naturally derived’ usually refers to ingredients that have been sourced from nature, but have gone through a process which means they can no longer claim that it is natural. The ingredient has usually gone through a chemically enhanced process to deliver an unnatural form of the natural ingredient. What would you say to someone who is sceptical about single-ingredient skincare? Try to forget any assumptions you might have and give it a try – you won’t be disappointed. Our serums offer a radically different approach to skincare, and when you realise that Biologi replaces your moisturiser, night cream, day cream and eye cream, you can simplify your skincare routine. HOUSE to HOME Whether it’s a brand new build or a complete renovation, Rachael Turner from Front Porch Renovations can do it all. We chat to her about the journey so far, and how she continues to stay innovative, from design to completion.

How did you become interested in construction and home design? To be honest, it's something I've been interested in since I was a little girl. I can remember always sitting at my desk at home sketching floor plans and home elevations from a very young age. However, I also loved the piano, and after high school, I studied Classical Piano at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, completing a degree in Classical Piano Performance in 2005. I then ran a music school for almost 10 years, which I loved, but as I approached 30 years of age, I decided I wanted to become a licensed builder! How did Front Porch Properties come about? I started in the industry by buying, renovating and selling houses. After that, people asked me to be involved in the construction of their own family home, and it was shortly after that I went back to studying construction, started on the journey to get my builder's license and Front Porch Properties was born. What makes Front Porch Properties so unique? I think we are unique for two main reasons. Our style is a combination of both modern and classic design. “Modern homes with storybook charm" is how I describe it. We specialise in modern farmhouses, classic American homes, Cape Cod, cottages, barn-style homes, etc. We also offer a complete start-to-finish service. Often a builder will become involved in the process after the client has had plans drawn up by an architect. At Front Porch, I am personally involved in the process from the initial meeting, design of the home, arranging all the various consultants (engineers, town planners, certifiers) right through to the end of construction. If people wish, I can also help with the full styling and furnishing of the home. Having this startto-furnish service irons out a lot of problems for home owners. What do you enjoy working on more, renovations or new homes? New builds are definitely a lot easier and almost always cheaper per square meter; you are working with a blank canvas. However, I personally love the challenge of a renovation and the thrill of bringing a derelict home back to life. PAGE 46

What is your favourite style of home? It probably goes in seasons, but right now, I'm definitely loving and building a lot of Modern Farmhouse style homes. Hamptons style homes are becoming increasingly overdone, so I love offering something a bit different to the market. What advice do you have for anyone who is looking to renovate or build their dream home? Ensure you select a builder who you implicitly trust and somebody who understands your vision. Also, be sure to select someone who specialises in your preferred style of home. It’s also a lot easier if you can find a builder who is involved from the design phase, so that they can control budget and build-ability. It’s a common problem for home owners to have plans drawn up by an architect to a certain budget, only to move to the next stage where they discover the build cost is beyond initial expectations. RIDGEMILL ESTATE

THE GREAT

GRANITE REGION From tipples to tastes, Styler Melissa Myrteza spent a weekend exploring the beautiful wineries of Stanthorpe.

I

would bet big bucks that a winery tour is on everyone’s bucket list. It is easily pushed aside as an impossible feat when working out the logistics of alcohol consumption and transportation across beautiful South East Queensland. So, as I looked into organising a vino tour to celebrate my 23rd birthday, I was pleasantly surprised to find Brisbane businesses having filled this hole in the market. With a range of tours to choose from that would transport us from a Brisbane location to our selected wineries and back home, I happily settled on Granite Highlands Maxi-Tours. What could be more appropriate than celebrating my 23rd birthday with 23 of my nearest and dearest vino-lovers? All 23 of us boarded the bus with high expectations and a thirst for local, Australian-grown grapes. Stanthorpe’s location in the Granite Belt was a scenic two-hour road trip from Brisbane City. Our boisterous bus driver and owner of the company, Allan, laughed when he PAGE 48

saw us, saying he usually took 30-year-old party groups not twenty-somethings! But we were determined to explore the Stanthorpe vineyards and disrupt a few cellar doors. Besides, we would like to think that our tastebuds were mature beyond our years. The Spotify playlist was chosen, and we began the two-and-a-bit hour journey South. The Queensland countryside was picturesque as we drove past rolling hills covered in a striking thick carpet of grass from recent rainfall. What a welcome to the stunning Granite Belt region. Spirits were high and we were on our way to our first stop. Ridgemill Estate was a large open vineyard boasting cabin accommodation and curious pet goats. This award-winning boutique winery was the first tasting experience for many of us. Sniffing and swirling, we were taught the art of tasting, unaware that there was so much more to wine than we thought. As we sipped on around ten different wines, free of charge, it was a chance to test our tastebuds, pushing our comfort

zones with different combinations and bold flavours. Knowing full well it was the first of five wineries, I cut down my purchase list from four bottles to one and we headed on our way with a delightful peach and ginger flavoured white Sav in the bottom of the bus. BALLANDEAN ESTATE

The next stop was the rustic Ballandean Estate. Open and operating since 1932, this family-owned cellar door delighted us with rare alternative wines. Our group was hung-up over their adventurous fortified Rumball liqueur, bursting with the delicious taste of chocolate and rum. With the $5 tasting reimbursed with any purchase, we were busy sampling whatever wine we chose off the menu, as well as purchasing glass fineries and mouth-watering dried meats. It was our first encounter with wine barrels, and we were shocked at the sheer volume they held. A tipple here and a tipple there, the samplers quickly added up. It was time for lunch, so we made our way over to Masons Winery for a scenic, wine-filled meal. After delighting in gorgeous stuffed mushrooms and a hearty lasagne – washed down with a bottle of wine, of course – we ventured outside to explore the impressive vineyard. Rows upon rows of grape vines were the perfect spot for photos. Our Instagrams were all filled with blue skies and green vines as we documented our day so far on the ride to Bent Road Winery. As we reached Bent Road, our karaoke had gained significant volume. We were an orchestra travelling down the wide streets of Stanthorpe, eager as ever for another tasting. This bubbly team of four fellas were so passionate about their wine, and we got to follow the production process in detail,

learning the techniques and seeing the equipment used in modern winemaking. After nibbling on cheese and devouring more wine, we were in the highest of spirits. Skipping down the rows of vines we were basking in the sunshine and each other’s company. Somehow, we were still kicking after ticking off four wineries. Balancing Rock was our final destination as the bus rolled up the dusty driveway. We quickly saw the inspiration behind the name, with two balancing rocks featured on the property alongside a lake and yet another charming vineyard. The final drops of wine from the Granite Region did not disappoint, quenching the last of our thirst and preparing us for the long journey home. As the organiser for such a jam-packed day, I was surprised to leave so incredibly relaxed. Allan took the reins and made our vino journey seamless. From Merlots to Muscats, the bus cabin was filled with everyone’s purchases, proud to be supporting our local cellar doors. We soon bid adieu to Stanthorpe with an unforgettable pink sunset, testing the limits of our voices with yet more karaoke as we ventured back to beautiful Brisbane with our new wines and developed palates. A reality TV star turned professional singer, sharing messages of love and positivity, proving the haters wrong. @ellenreedmusic

Occupation Singer

How did you come to be at your current job? Through hard work and sheer determination. I’ve had singing lessons and have been training in the entertainment industry since I was six years old, but have only considered myself a professional singer for the last four to five years.

Describe your personal style I wear what feels good to me. I genuinely love dressing up and being a bit extra on stage, but I also love getting around in my t-shirts and Vans. Being a curvy gal, sometimes clothes are hard to find, so I tend to stick to styles that I know will suit me.

My Matrix Red Violet hair colour to give me my signature red locks, but also my Nak Hair Red Conditioner to keep the red vibrant.

What’s the key to your success and happiness? I think happiness lies in trying to be kind to everyone you meet. You never know what’s going on in other people’s lives, so I try to be as kind as possible in my interactions with other people. I think the key to success is working harder than you ever have before and never taking no for an answer! I love the quote from the Queen Momager Kris Jenner that says, “If you’re getting a no; you’re talking to the wrong person!”

One piece of advice that has worked well

Song on high rotation

“What have you done today to get you to where you want to be?” I find this saying really helps keep me motivated to achieving small goals every day.

I always have Fleetwood Mac at the top of my playlists and Billie Eilish’s new album has been getting a few spins too.

One fashion brand to wear for the rest of your life

What motivates you and keeps you going?

Sheike - I love nearly everything that they release and I love that their clothes have the ability to be dressed up or down.

A product you can’t live without

Describe a turning point in your life When I was 19 years old, I went through quite a traumatic event in the industry, but a wise man encouraged me to keep going and learn how to write my own songs. I started writing and I wrote some terrible songs in the beginning, but I was determined to learn everything I could, so I learnt from my peers and I read everything I could find. I’ve worked hard to develop my sound, who I am as an artist and what I want to say.

Signature scent Paco Rabanne Olympea.
