Five years on from the Rana Plaza tragedy and Fashion Revolution movement that followed, the fashion industry is more conscious than ever. With the introduction of the #WhoMadeMyClothes initiative, we’re continually seeing many positive changes and a shift to a more sustainable, ethical future, in terms of both materials and worker welfare. Consumers are now demanding to know who made our clothes, how much they’re paid and what their lives are like. In many ways, Australian designers are leading the way.

Born out of the desire to support rural artisan communities in developing countries, Ash White is the eponymous label from Mackay-based Ashleigh White. After working in manufacturing in Sri Lanka and learning about artisan work, White felt compelled to create opportunities for the people in rural communities that would support their lifestyle and contribute to preserving traditional art-forms. “We work with a large network of fabric suppliers in India, from organic cotton to high grade linen, however our signature is handwoven fabrics which are produced on wooden machines in communities all over India. We use mostly natural fibres and source only GOTS certified fabrics to ensure our process is as sustainable as possible,” she says. Having been involved with Fashion Revolution for several years before launching her label in 2017, White is a passionate advocate for recognising and asking who made your clothes. “I feel it needs to go further, where both brands and customers start taking action to ensure the livelihood of their makers is being considered in the development process. Education is important; however action and change is even more crucial and it really begins with taking one step closer to a more positive outcome. It may seem small taking action on a personal level, however collectively great strides towards a more positive fashion world can be made.” For White, worker welfare is the number one component over all other ethical practices. “How we live our life and the decisions we make ultimately drive business and if we do not build a sustainable foundation to our businesses, the chances of failure are higher. Worker welfare is crucial in building a sustainable fashion future as human hands make the majority of our clothing and every human on this planet deserves respect and support regardless of

our circumstances. Positive support leads to positive growth and by working together we can create an industry we are all proud of.” “My hope for the future is that we return to a slower, more considered approach to fashion and we begin to truly value our clothing and how it is made.” FOLLOW THE ASH WHITE JOURNEY @ASHWHITE_THELABEL

While running a small Instagram account sharing brands that were doing great things in the sustainable fashion scene, Amber Boyers was regularly asked for recommendations on sustainable & ethically made swimwear. She found it difficult to find any herself, so put her fashion and business knowledge to the test and started designing her own. Since launching her label, Baaia, Amber’s position on sustainable fashion and supporting those in the industry has only grown stronger. “I hope that the ethos can change to quality over quantity,”she says. “I think the #WhoMadeMyClothes initiative, as well as social media are really to credit for this growth in transparency from brands.” As the people behind the biggest brands of our time Amber believes factory workers deserve to be valued and respected as equals. “The only way their situation might

start looking up is if the western consumer starts changing their shopping habits,” she says. “I think it’s an important part of the relationship between brands and customers that went overlooked for a very long time. By removing the veil and being honest about who they choose to employ and how they choose to treat them, shows respect and honesty to the paying consumer. “My biggest hope is that the attitude towards our current fast fashion craze shifts to a slower, more thoughtful approach. There’s nothing better than having a piece you’ve worn and loved for years - something with style & quality that has stood the test of time. Those cherished pieces will always bring more joy to us than short lived ‘on-trend’ garments ever could, and that kind of joy and appreciation for clothing is something I hope more people will experience in the years to come.” FOLLOW THE BAAIA JOURNEY @BAAIA_LABEL PAGE 5

WHITE LABEL NOBA

Woo-hoo here we go again! I’m so THRILLED to be back in the Ed’s seat and what a busy time it’s been already with a sensational fashion parade by WHITE LABEL NOBA at the Old Museum, and the Gold Coast launch of London brand, WHYTE STUDIO (we chat to their Brisbane designer on p15). MBFWA turned it on again, further cementing my opinion that AUSTRALIAN FASHION is some of the best in the world. The TREASURY BRISBANE is bringing fashion back with the ICON FASHION SERIES event on July 12 with parades by some of our most loved designers (find out who on p16). From now on, you’ll be seeing more Australian fashion in Style as we aim to uncover the new and exciting brands you may not have heard of. This month, our HOMEGROWN issue heralds the beginning of a new era. I’m all about supporting Brisbane businesses, people and especially shopping local. My wish is that you’ll support a small business this month you’ll feel good and they’ll do a happy dance in celebration.

WHAT I KNOW ABOUT… There are some defining moments in our lives that really shape the person we become. We ask some of Brisbane’s most inspiring women to share their greatest lessons. WORDS TAMILLE HEAD

HEARTBREAK In the throes of a breakup, Brisbane artist Carina reached for art as an outlet and experienced a sense of healing and calming like never before. I’ve learned that once you get through it, you will be stronger than ever and grow into a new, better version of yourself. Experiencing heartbreak made me realise more than ever that I have the most amazing friends and family around me that I have always taken for granted. When experiencing heartbreak, it’s important to take one step at a time. Don’t beat yourself up, don’t blame yourself. We tend to look back and see

nothing but the good times and good qualities that keep us attached to the other person even though the bad times most likely outweigh the good ones. I have learned that it is just a chapter of your life that closes and a new one will open. Turning to art helped me express my anger and sadness that I couldn’t express by talking about it or in any other way. It also kept my mind busy and I stopped re-playing the break-up over and over again. All The “paintthehateoutofit” collection are stories and situations of the break-up.

STARTING OVER Suffering from post-natal depression and newly separated, personal trainer Lauren had no choice but to start a new life with her two young children. Starting over is pretty much what I do on a daily basis. Or at least it feels like it sometimes. You feel like you’re on top of everything but then all of a sudden, you come tumbling back down again. It’s a constant life lesson that I feel like I’m learning all the time. But I feel I’m getting better at it. My kids, Maddie (5.5) and Max (2.5) are my motivation; they’re the reason I get out of bed every day. Even if they’re not with me every day, they’re with me in everything I do. Starting over really means having another chance to learn again. When you’ve hit rock bottom, it just gives you PAGE 12

a chance to rebuild and put all the lessons you’ve learned into action. Even though hitting rock bottom sucks (and it hurts), once you reach the top again, you realise how good it feels. I like to think of it as a blessing in disguise. I couldn’t ask for a better support system. I’m lucky in that I have amazing family and friends around me. In terms of how I found the courage to start over, I didn’t have a choice. I want the kids to grow up and realise “Mum had it tough for a while, but she did good.”

How do you think growing up in Brisbane influenced your label? It influenced me by taking advantage of the amazing outdoors and my passion for motocross racing (introduced to me by my dad). I got into fashion because I was inspired to design a womenswear motocross line. Where do you draw inspiration from for your designs? My travel and lifestyle across the US and UK and of course, music. Were you always interested in fashion growing up? Yes, through my mum. She was always trying to make me more ‘girlie’. You work closely with your mum, Lynne. How is that? We work really well as a team, I focus on all the creative and mum manages the business end. What made you choose to pursue a career in fashion? I originally wanted to continue my career as a professional motocross rider and wanted to design my own motocross clothes. The design and making of these pieces started to take over and it soon became my new passion. My mum also inspired me through her own love of fashion.

I WANTED TO CREATE MY OWN MOTOCROSS LOOKS AND WAS VERY KEEN TO UNDERSTAND THE DESIGN AND MAKING PROCESS.

BIANCA WHYTE

Who is the Brisbane designer killing it in London? Bianca Whyte of Whyte Studio. INTERVIEW TAMILLE HEAD

CHECK OUT THE GOLD COAST LAUNCH EVENT AT STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU.

Describe a typical day for you…I start very early in the morning, around 7am by checking in with Mum in Brisbane, meeting with my team in London and going through my designs and production which is all done locally. I usually grab lunch on the go and drink lots of coffee throughout the day. I love to finish the day with a gym session and a glass of wine with my partner, Ange, overlooking London Tower Bridge. As a business woman, how do you stay motivated? I like to keep fit and of course DJ’ing. Music keeps me motivated! What are three things you think every woman should own? Leather jacket, a choker and luxury backpack. You’re also an accomplished DJ, how do you see music and fashion combining? (Also, is there anything you’re NOT good at?!) Music inspires me to make fashion, I would love Whyte Studio to be a staple to music artists around the world. I am not good at patience! FOLLOW THE LABEL’S JOURNEY @WHYTE_STUDIO

hen you think of the skyline along the Brisbane River, there’s one iconic destination that comes to mind: Treasury Brisbane. With its impressive exterior and timeless design, it’s a quintessential part of our everyday landscape in Brisbane. Not only that, but it is home to one of Australia’s mostloved casino floors and luxurious hotels. With a rich history in the fashion space, it was only a matter of time before Treasury Brisbane made plans to bring fashion back to its original Brisbane home. Due to launch in July, the ICON Fashion Series was developed once again to bring the Brisbane fashion community together as one. With a host of much-loved local designers on show, including Gail Sorronda, White Label Noba, George Wu, Chelsea De Luca and Paul Hunt, it’s set to be a celebration of Brisbane’s best creative minds and style innovators.

When it comes to recognising and appreciating style, Kellie Alderman and Damien Anthony Rossi are at the top of their game. So, when it came to collaborating on this exciting event with Treasury Brisbane, it was a natural progression for Kellie and Damien. “We wanted to create a really beautiful and sophisticated, yet still accessible and regular fashion-focused event that also had an element of fun that we felt was missing from the calendar in Brisbane,” Kellie says. “We have such a rich history of brilliant design and incredible fashion-industry talent in Brisbane. I’ve been lucky to have been associated with the industry here for about two decades.” “Kellie and I are so excited about working with the fantastic team at Treasury Brisbane to deliver a glamorous, world-class fashion event for lovers of style and fashion in this city,” Damien adds. “I’ve always loved the iconic Treasury Hotel and Casino buildings and in the past they have played host to some fabulous fashion events.” To be a part of this exciting event, purchase your tickets from Treasury Brisbane today. If the SHOE fits We chat to one half of shoe label, Mara & Mine, (and Brisbane native) Jasmine Yarbrough about her success in the industry. How did you get into the fashion industry? I was an international model for more than ten years and had the privilege of seeing and working with the best in the business. It was all a great experience. At what point did you decide to start your own brand and what was the process? I didn’t want to stay on the catwalk. My business partner and I saw a gap in the market for flats. And instead of just talking about it we both went for it. The label was born with the last half of our first names. What are your roles in the business? It depends on the task. But it’s always collaborative. We create together. We build the shoes together. From the start to the finish the shoes are a reflection of us. So, we see the process through. Together. From choosing

I wish it was less about the sale and more about difference. Fashion always has a way of working itself out though. Evolving and moving with the times. It’s bigger than any one brand or business. It has an energy of its own. That’s why I love it so much. What has been a pivotal moment in your career? I think for me it was when Cara Delevingne was seen wearing our Jem Skull slippers. We had so many people want to buy the Slippers at the time we couldn’t keep up with the demand and stores were contacting us. That was definitely a pivotal moment in our career.

KATE AMOS

Revolutionising the fashion industry isn’t easy but this Brisbane company is proving it’s possible. Supporting local business is a big part of what we do. When brave people recognise their strength and decide they want to share that with others, that’s when magic happens! One such individual is Brisbane-based designer Kate Amos. Kate understands the reality of shopping for clothing as a big-busted woman, and after conducting a survey with women around the world, realised she wasn’t alone in this struggle. “Over 90% of big-busted women report difficulty finding bras and clothing that fit and are flattering for their body shape. Plus, 8 out of 10 women report that while they would like to wear strappy tops or dresses, they can’t

because of problems wearing a strapless bra.” Kate launched Full Embrace – an Australianowned company - as a way to make good quality and well-fitting clothing and bras more accessible (and fashionable!) than ever before. Featuring industry-first designs that allow you to connect the clothing to the bra, The Compatibles Collection alleviates the need for a strapless bra. Full Embrace is the lingerie label for everyday women. As Kate

says, “we’re just a team of average women with larger-than-average boobs”. Their Kickstarter campaign launched in May with a goal to earn $10K worth of funding by June 21. Preparing your estate

Trust keeps How to be seen and relationships together not just heard

Planning your estate is a sensitive but necessary task that we all need to face at some point in our lives. Have you thought about what will become of your possessions when you pass? Many people have accumulated a lifetime of jewellery but don’t know what it’s worth today. My estate service is delivered in the form of an itemised schedule of your jewellery and watches. This schedule can be used as a legal record for your beneficiaries so that the items are formally catalogued and ready for division. You can choose to catalogue every item whether precious or not, or simply appraise the valuable items over an agreed amount. In addition, your schedule can be tailored to include multiple values for each item so that your beneficiaries can choose whether they want to keep and insure the jewels, sell them, or scrap them for their gold value.

Most of us would agree that trust is an essential prerequisite for the well-being of any intimate relationship. Some people even say that trust is more important than love. So why is trust so important? Trust allows us to be able to share openly and honestly our most personal thoughts and feelings. It also goes hand in hand with commitment as only after we feel we can trust someone we are able to truly commit to that person. Building trust is not easy. It requires time and patience. As slow as it is to build, it can also dissolve quickly, sometimes from a single incident. If it’s something extreme such as infidelity, trust can be very difficult to re-establish and can undermine other aspects of a relationship such as communication and intimacy. Open communication is the biggest, most effective factor in building trust. See me for help in building trust.

Here’s the thing about advertising – people need to see things more than once before they do business with you. They need to feel familiar with your brand and trust your messaging. But in a world full of irritating jingles, mobile billboards and pop-up ads how can you make your brand stand out? The answer? Print. It’s tried, tested and it gets results. However, don’t just take my word for it. Approximately 62.5% of Australians aged 14+ read print magazines and women’s fashion magazines have grown an impressive 9.6% in the last 12 months; making them the fastest growing category. Hey, you can’t argue with the stats. Print advertising isn’t a one-off fix, it’s a long-term game. It’s a precise and tangible approach that when targeted properly, can be a match made in heaven for your business. When it comes to gaining exposure for your brand, it’s time to take a proven approach to reach your prospects. So what are you waiting for? Put it in print today. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

STYLING TIPS

with Mark Ferguson

Try this to shorten your to-do list

Every man and his hot chocolate

Talking about technique

For most, our to-do lists are a never-ending slog of things to do. Often these lists seem to multiply and easily get out of hand, becoming bigger tasks to manage and sort than they started out. There is a myriad of books, blogs and podcasts out there aiming to help us tackle simple things like our to-do lists and become better organised humans in this everdemanding, time-poor world. But if you are anything like me, this ends up becoming yet another list of things to action! So, here’s one try-it-at-home action that you can implement immediately and hopefully reduce the list of your things to eventually do. Coming from one of my favourite authors Gretchen Rubin this is the “One minute” rule. Throughout your day, as you come across tasks, ask yourself “would it take less than a minute to complete?” and if so, just do it. So simple. Try it and see how you go!

We understand that coffee is not everyone’s cup of tea…which is why we developed our very own premium drinking chocolate. How good is it drinking a cup of warm cocoa, with oozy marshmallows on a cold winters day? For our delicious Rudy Hot Chocolate (named after our beloved dog Rudy), we source the cocoa from the Komgi organic community. It is a trintario cocoa from East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea. The cocoa is fermented for 144 hours and then dried on raised beds. We also know it all comes down to flavour in the cup. So the flavour of the cocoa produces a memorable rich chocolatey tone with intense berry characteristics. Add deliciously textured silky milk, maybe a swirl of cream or a couple of marshmallows and you have yourself a cup of joy. Our Rudy Premium Drinking Chocolate is available in 750g retail bags at Wolff Coffee Roasters. We hope you enjoy it!

Society’s needs are constantly evolving and so are the needs for a suit that is not only professional in appearance but durable against the elements of a busy lifestyle. Among the world-renowned fabric mills is Cerruti. Established in 1881, it is known for its jacquard weaving technique. The jacquard loom has enabled the creation of a fabric that is waterproof, crease resistant and stain resistant, opening the doors to a whole new world of fashion. Comprising of fibre selected from thousands of fabric batches in Queensland with its unique fabric construction, Cerruti’s range has been carefully created to deliver a garment suitable for any unexpected surprises. The fabric is tightly woven and still has adequate breathability. A suit that still portrays luxury with a waterproof feature is the step in the right direction of creating new fashion technologies and innovations.

LOCAL

From huge tunes to soaring sounds, Siobhan Taylor introduces us to the Brisbane musos you need to know. PHOTOGRAPHER JOSEPH CRACKETT

HATCHIE | Indie Pop Dreamy, glistening and fresh: these are just some of the phrases you’ll hear Hatchie fans use to describe her stunning sound. Combining shimmering tunes with insightful lyrics, Harriette Pilbeam caught our attention in 2017 with her performance at BIGSOUND and when touring with The Creases. Since then she has showcased at SXSW and dropped her debut EP, Sugar & Spice, in May. This local girl has caught our attention and we can’t wait to see what she does next.

ASHA JEFFERIES | Roots Listing the likes of Jeff Buckley, Father John Misty and Gabriella Cohen as some of her influences, Asha Jefferies boasts a soulful, eclectic folk, roots sound that will seep into your heart and make you feel something entirely new. Most recently, Asha was a finalist at the Queensland Music Awards as well as the Vanda & Young Songwriting Competition.

WHERE TO SEE LOCAL MUSIC IN BRISBANE: THE ZOO THE TRIFFID THE TIVOLI WOOLLY MAMMOTH BLACK BEAR LODGE THE BEARDED LADY

MISS BLANKS | Hip Hop

FEKI | Electronica

XANDER HOLMES | Indie Pop

Boasting out of control fabulousness, red-hot lyrics and a clearly defined sense of personal style, Sian “Miss Blanks” Vandermuelen has a big personality that is delighting fans across Australia. This local dynamo took to the stage for the Listen Out music festival in 2017, treating punters to an unforgettable experience. She also showcased at BIGSOUND last year and is currently working on new music.

FEKI isn’t exactly a new face on Australia’s music scene, but nevertheless, make sure you keep this Brisbane producer on your radar because we are expecting some big things from him this year. Going from strength to strength, Henry Feki recently collaborated with Charli Burrowes to perform at her AWOL exhibition in Brisbane, and has recently completed work on his debut EP (which we can’t wait to get our hands on!).

There are few singers that can boast a start to their career quite like Xander Holmes. With a stunning voice compared to the likes of Matt Corby and Sigur Rós, Xander Holmes has delighted us with his unique sound that combines deep drums, incredible guitar work and atmospheric production. He was recently awarded the 2018 Schools Award at Queensland Music Awards and is definitely a name to watch.

Taking pride of place on Montague Road in West End, The Joinery is a dynamic event space created by local sisters Maria Nicolaou and Penny Culpo – astute working mums who adopted everything there is to know about hospitality from their hard-working Greek migrant parents. With its warehouse-style interior, The Joinery is somewhat of a blank canvas that can be transformed to dazzling effect for engagements, weddings, corporate functions, product launches, conferences, workshops, birthday bashes and gala dinners. While both strong-willed, passionate and driven, the sisters are yin and yang, each bringing very different qualities to the business table. “Operating a business with a sibling, in particular a close sister, means both business

This transparency and understanding makes day-today communication and delivering objectives much more efficient and less time is wasted on tip-toeing around each other’s feelings.” “We are each other’s number one fans and share an incredible respect and admiration for the role we each play, both within the business but also in our roles as mothers,” Penny adds. The duo’s passion for delivering amazing, customised events shines through in everything they do.

WHAT’S UP, DOC? WINTER’S HERE

GPs and house call doctors are busy with an early start to the flu season.

W

inter has hit and we’re not just entering the coldest season of the year (time to bring out the boots, coats, scarves and hats!) but also the flu season. GPs and house call doctors are already seeing an increase in flu-like cases and the prediction is we’re in for another severe flu season. Last year, 4000 Australians lost their lives to the flu during the winter months and that has a lot of us questioning what we can do this year to be prepared. Flu vaccinations are available at doctors and chemists and they’re your best defence against STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

falling sick. They’re free for children under the age of 5 and for those over 65. Immunity may be boosted with some hearty winter meals (and they make for a great snap on Instagram!). Aim to include foods rich in vitamin B6 and B12 – potatoes, spinach, beans, cereal grains, meat, milk and fish. But for many of us no matter what preventative measures we take, chances are we will end up sick before the mercury starts to climb again. After hours house call doctors provide urgent care for those with illnesses and symptoms including the flu, tonsillitis, nausea

and a range of medical conditions. They can even provide medication to ease symptoms until you can get to a chemist. Now, if you are sick after hours you’re able to get the urgent care you need with a doctor coming to your house and you staying in your bed and it’s bulk billed. Just like hospitals and GP clinics, house call doctor services are preparing for the expected winter flu spike in patient numbers. The advice again this year is if you do fall sick with the flu don’t go to work or school and try to stay home wherever possible to avoid spreading it. PAGE 33

Why quality does matter

Treat your skin right this winter

There’s no need to stop moving

When talking about progressive lenses, most people are unaware there is a huge difference in the visual quality achieved from lower quality lenses and optimised vision produced by higher quality lenses. The frustrations people feel when changing their gaze from distance to near, or looking at the side mirrors in the car, can be minimised by selecting only quality lens designs. The budget prices offered by multi-chain stores are reflected in the vision they provide the wearer. As an independent practice, we choose to support an Australian owned lens manufacturer. These lenses use the latest technology in their lens designs and the quality control is unsurpassed. As a result, we believe our customers are receiving the best products. Whatever optical need is identified, we have the answer, from occupational lenses to fashion lenses.

Winter can be a challenging time to maintain our skin, with the cool weather and low humidity. We’ve got some tips for you. Moisturisers – pick the right moisturising product based on your skin type. In winter, you will often need to use a more nourishing product, and reapply multiple times during the day. Remember to moisturise your whole body! Antioxidants – Vitamin B and C serums are my favourite antioxidants, and should be used as your base coat immediately after cleansing. These agents reduce damage that UV radiation, pollution and smoking do to your skin. DNA repair enzymes – The new generation of DNA repair enzymes can help reverse pre-existing damage on a molecular level. Sunscreen – use a SPF 50+ daily, and a physical blocker with iron oxide if you will be outdoors. The sun does not rest in winter!

Athletic people, particularly runners and cyclists, frequently present to our clinics with varicose veins. This is to be expected because of the huge increase in load on the venous system in the legs during intense physical activity. We see a number of patients that have deferred treatment of varicose veins for too long so as to avoid interfering with their fitness regime. The more prolonged the delay is in treating varicose veins, the higher the risk that microcellular damage has started to occur to the skin. All the procedures offered are walk-in/ walk out, non-invasive treatments. You are back on your feet for a 30 minute walk immediately after the procedure and you can then drive home. At the initial consultation you will be provided with a 12 month treatment plan, and our team will happily work with you to find appointment dates that fit around your training schedule.

Safeguarding your smile

What is posttraumatic growth?

Turn around, bright eyes

Playing contact sport not only comes with the risk of breaking bones or twisting ankles; fractured teeth or a split lip are a common sight in the waiting rooms of emergency departments on a Saturday. Wearing a custom-fitted mouthguard is the best protection we have against trauma to not only the teeth but also our jaws, lips and tongues. Custom made well-fitted mouthguards can also help protect against concussion, which can cause long term damage to the brain. Any force directed at the mouth area is absorbed by the mouthguard and helps to spread out the blow of the impact. Our specially-made mouthguards contour to your mouth so it makes it easier to breathe, talk and most importantly protect your teeth and jaws. Protection is your best bet! Reserve a time with us so we can organise your customfitted mouthguard.

It is likely that everyone will experience at least one traumatic event in their lifetime. After a crisis, most people are resilient enough and return to normal functioning quickly, without help. For others, growth after a trauma is such that they develop and change in ways significantly beyond their prior level of functioning; known as Posttraumatic Growth. The idea that we change due to enduring significant challenges, sometimes in radically positive ways, is encouraging. Pursuing new opportunities or possibilities in life, improved relationships with loved ones and with others who have suffered, increased mental and emotional strength, and a greater appreciation and gratitude for life. To facilitate growth, one must deliberately reflect, consider with clarity the meaning of events, challenge oneself with confidence, and commit to plans for change.

If our eyes are the windows to our soul, then it’s clear that we should prioritise them in our beauty routine. And when it comes to beauty treatments, there’s really none more important than brow and lash restoration! For full, luscious lashes and flattering, healthy brows, it’s important to dedicate some time into grooming them. Plus, it doesn’t hurt to indulge in a little extra metime! That’s why at The Brow Bar our Brow & Lash Booster is one of our most loved treatments. Using an all-natural serum, the treatment nourishes your current brow and lash hairs and allows them to stay in the hair cycle and live longer before shedding. Our Brow & Lash Booster is perfect for everyone, meaning there’s no need to hide behind some bangs while you let your brows grow in for 6 months! To keep your brows in their best condition, it’s recommended to visit the salon every 4-6 weeks with no home tweezing in between.

We’ve found the beauty secret that will keep your skin bright all winter long. As the driving force behind Realskin The Facial Hub, Sevine Forster is passionate about introducing her clients to only the best types of skin treatments. We chatted to her about the ever-popular method of skin needling. “Since skin needling takes a dermal approach to treating the skin, skin hydration is one of the first noticeable results. We are able to penetrate the needle depth up to 2.8mm, however this depth is not necessary for all skin types,” Sevine says. “What amazes me about skin needling is that the results keep giving. Some research shows the remodelling phase (where new collagen is made, and stronger) can last for up to 2 years.” Sevine is skin needling’s biggest advocate, having undergone the treatment several times. “I love the improvements I see in my skin

hydration, the smoothness of the fine lines and wrinkles. Nothing compares to the improvements in my skin volume, the overall integrity of my skin and the youthful appearance I see from skin needling.” Mark your calendar! To experience the benefits of skin needling for yourself, head along to the salon’s skin needling event on June 19. Featuring demonstrations, special offers and skincare discounts, you’ll leave feeling inspired. REALSKIN THE FACIAL HUB 68 RACECOURSE RD, HAMILTON P 3268 5488 THEFACIALHUB.COM.AU

Relationship recovery We chat to Relationship Coach, Paul Baker, about common relationship challenges and how to resolve them. We often hear that infidelity is on the rise. How common are infidelity issues in relationships? Data shows that infidelity is the most common challenge in romantic relationships today. This form of betrayal can have devastating consequences on the relationship and the parties involved and is believed to be the leading cause of divorce and relationship breakdown. But infidelity does not have to mean the end of the relationship. Working through the betrayal takes a lot of forgiveness and willingness to rebuild trust. How important is intimacy in relationships? Intimacy touches all the different dimensions of our lives, including the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects. And quite naturally the sexual side STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

of things also. When these intimacy aspects go unmet, couples experience a drop in psychological wellbeing and viewing the relationship negatively becomes common. Countering the loss of intimacy involves developing trust and communication skills to overcome the unmet intimacy expectations. How important is communication in relationships? Lack of communication is the number one complaint made by couples in therapy. A healthy relationship is all about good communication. Good communication not only brings partners together but also helps them face problems head-on. It binds the relationship and enhances its intimacy. Brow Down Styler Sarah redefined brow goals during a one-on-one with Brisbane’s queen of brows, and her face will never be the same again. With all the promises of ‘life-changing’ beauty experiences out there, it takes a lot to genuinely impress me. From the second I sat down at The Brow Bar, though, it became apparent that their signature Brow Lift-Shaping was on a whole new level. After a captivating consultation, including a psychosomatic-style face reading, founder and director Chernae Silk suggested lightening my brows. I won’t lie; as a black-haired gal, I was a little taken aback. Wasn’t it a given that black brows belonged with black hair? Apparently it’s a look championed by some of my favourite celeb faces, and would act to warm up my face and open up my eyes (and my heart, according to the face reading).

I walked out of The Brow Bar with a renewed sense of self-confidence Using a number of top secret Brow Bar exclusive techniques, my brows were lightened, toned, tweezed, waxed and fluffed with ultimate precision, yet there wasn’t a harsh line in sight. I had the full, defined, Hollywood brows I never even knew I was missing. The colour was tailored to my face shape, skin tone and eye colour, and the arch was moved to the perfect point my

face needed. Although I was so pleased with the final result that I’ve nicknamed my brows J.Lo and Beyoncé, I walked out of The Brow Bar with a renewed sense of self-confidence. That, to me, is a life-changing beauty experience. READ MORE ONLINE THE BROW BAR P 1800 BROW BAR (1800 276 922) BROWBAR.COM

Kath Rose PR juggernaut, humanist, hound-mum and Aussie bogan rolled in glitter. Dymocks The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck $12.99

@kathrose

What amuses you? My husband the Man Mountain and the fact I post photos of him on social media and the poor bloke is a digital dinosaur and has no idea.

Occupation… Owner of Kath Rose & Associates PR. This year marks 20 years in business! And I’d describe my occupation as part fire-fighter, part tornado-chaser, part pacifier, illqualified psychotherapist, massive listener, writer and creator, served with a great big dollop of passion and belief in what I do, coupled with one eye always open!

Describe your style Bangkok pole dancer meets German tourist. Or Aussie bogan rolled in glitter.

Song on high rotation…

Always be authentic (i.e. don’t be a dickhead), always work harder than anyone else, and do your 10,000 hours so your opinions have weight!

One label to wear for the rest of your life... Compassionate. Oh, and if you wanted a fashion label, then always Gucci!

Drink of choice… Frangelico and LimeJuice, or Miller Draft.

Go-to karaoke song….

Anything from the 80s because that’s when music got real!

Flame Trees by the masters Cold Chisel – every night of the year. Great storytellers.

The first thing you did this morning….

Wardrobe MVP…

Rolled over and was faced with two huge hounds glaring at me for taking up “their” bed.

Go-to Aussie designer… Tracey Watkins, White Label Noba. Brisbane based and a super star!

PAGE 42

What’s the key to success?

My most precious and adored gold Gucci knee high boots! I feel like a modern-day Cinderella in them (that is, after she divorced that insipid Prince Charming, went out on her own, forged a business and found the true love of life, and still kept talking to the animals).

Signature scent ... ‘As Sawira’ by Penhaligon’s of London (a heady mix of tobacco and the exotic trade coast spices … heaven).

What motivates you? I didn’t come from the closest family, so every day I try to balance work and being a mum and wife; it’s really important to me to leave a family legacy, and a professional one.

I most admire… People who overcome adversity; those who stand up for others; guts and humanity. And sunsets, Mother Nature is a genius.

Artist you’re obsessed with Two Brisbane artists – Matt Stewart and Michael Zavros; very different artists, both so talented.

Next holiday?

Gucci Guccy knit top $1355

Queenstown New Zealand, because it’s simply stunning and in every end-of-the-world movie, the South Island survives!

Best fashion tip…. Throw out the bloody rule book!!
