A Letter from the LORD MAJOR of Brisbane

T

o be part of Brisbane’s fashion and lifestyle fabric for the past 20 years is an incredible achievement – congratulations Style Magazine! From profiling people that call Brisbane home to showcasing the best eats, drinks and shopping our city has to offer, Style Magazine is quintessentially Brisbane and the publication many of us turn to when we want to keep our finger on the pulse of what’s happening. The face of Brisbane has changed dramatically over the past two decades and Style has been there along the way – documenting it through print and online – and I look forward to seeing what the next 20 years bring!

I

n my two years working with Tracy and Paul at Style, there’s one piece of advice I’ve learned and consider every single day. It might sound cheesy, but it’s to always remember to have fun. Whether it’s an event, an interview, a photoshoot, or a creative collaboration, I always make sure that FUN is at the centre of it! To celebrate 20 years of Style for our ‘Love Local’ edition, you’ll notice six faces that represent the everevolving dining scene of The City on our cover and inside (on page 22). We chat to local fashion brands Jean Riley, Apéro, and sass & bide (yep they started in Bris!) as well as restaurateur and owner of the iconic Hellenika and SK Steak & Oyster restaurants, Simon Gloftis, who was behind some of the Gold Coast’s most well-known cafes and eateries. This month you’ll find me at The Winter Village skating up a storm and at Grazed and Grown to meet some of the region’s best makers. Find all the happenings and more on page 18.

‘THE SIMON’

ith any career, you need to start somewhere. In my case, it was with corn on the cob. When I was 17, I started my very first business: a corn on the cob stall at the Rocklea markets. From there, I was a dish washer in an Italian restaurant in Robina and then I started making pizzas, got on the floor with customers, and it wasn’t long before I opened my first cafe with my brother in Broadbeach. You could say my love affair with the Gold Coast started here, with the opening of Little Beans and Hellenika in Nobby Beach, Piccolo in Miami, The Fish House in Burleigh, and Nineteen at The Star. Many people don’t know I was born in Melbourne (although my style of fare sometimes

reflects it) and moved to Brisbane when I was five. My passion for food was purely an accident. While I grew up in a European family (dad’s Greek and mum’s Polish), we were far from being foodies – boiling pasta was beyond us. Yet somehow, when I started working in restaurants, it came to me naturally. Way back before I was opening restaurants, I decided to get my real estate licence. Instead of studying, I would get caught up in cookbooks – it made me realise food was my calling. Many people say how much knowledge I have in the industry, but they seem to forget it’s taken me 20 something years to master. After the success of Hellenika on the Gold Coast, it took me almost five years to find the

right place to bring it to Brisbane. When I met with The Calile Hotel, it sounds almost too simplistic, but it was the right fit in every way. I couldn’t imagine the layout now without Hellenika or the zucchini chips – I never thought they would become so iconic, but next time someone stops me in the supermarket, I hope they mention the King George whiting instead! Now with SK Steak & Oyster at the same location, it has this magic in the air. If you close your eyes, you feel like you could be in New York. On the weekends, you’ll find me tucked inside Hellenika with Greek music playing while I dig into Corfu Bianco and sip on ‘The Simon’ – Grey Goose vodka, soda, tonic, and no fruit in a short glass. You gotta try it.

20 years of Style Magazine

Founded in 2001, Paul Johnston and Tracy Sinclair set out to provide the Brissy community with a magazine that championed our great River City. And to this day, they’ve never missed a month. Here, they reminisce on a jam-packed life in the world of publishing.

@STYLEMAGAZINES

P: If I think back to the beginning and where it all started, the landscape was totally different. There were so many areas that were taking off, like Rosalie, Ascot, Park Road, and James Street was just starting to boom. There were magazines and newspapers, but the internet wasn’t really a good source for people. T: Yes, that’s so true. P: We had the skills, too. I was a graphic designer and we’d had a couple of cracks at different magazines, and we’d learnt and worked overseas in places like New Zealand and London – that’s really what gave us the taste and ideas. And then it really evolved from there. T: That’s it – we both worked for TNT Magazine in London and those were the good old days. We learnt everything on the job – it was a really glamorous way of life. There was lots of travel, famils, and social outings. And for me, that really gave me the thirst for publishing. Then when we got back to Australia, we went and worked for someone else for a while in the CBD, but in the back of my mind, I was always thinking ‘hey, what can we be doing?’ and ‘how can we have our own publication?’. But it was also out of necessity, don’t you think? P: Yes, for sure. T: For me anyways, it was all about being able to do my own thing. And not having to answer to anyone else or lie if my kids were sick, haha! Obviously with all that came a lot of stress and late nights, too. P: I remember when Style was first born. You’d been made redundant during the day, and you came home and cried. And I told you to put your big girl pants on and that we’d come up with something! That’s when Style was born. And we were broke too! Ha! We started on the kitchen counter if you remember. T: Yep, we did. And it is those times when you’re beaten down and you think negative thoughts and then you’ve just gotta pick yourself up and make something of it. And I think it was the making of us – at least it was the making of me, definitely. It gave me something else to focus on. T: And back in those days, we had three little kids,

too. But when I look back on it, or talk to any other mothers, yes it’s hectic and crazy, but you just find the energy! And you’re somehow more motivated because of your family. You’re so driven at the time. P: Oh, there’s passion and adrenaline – that’s what kept us going. I think we tried to have weekends off and take the kids to sport and relax a little. T: Yeah it was a juggle, but I don’t look back at it and think it was hard. Who knows, maybe I had more energy then! To me, it was daily life. And because we were achieving and it was creative – yes, we were tired and buggered – but that’s part of building a business. P: But also, in the early days we were so excited to grow. We had one staff member, then two, then an office, then five staff. Then we started hitting new suburbs and industries and attracting new advertisers. And that’s how it grew. Yes we started in Ascot and Clayfield, but then pretty quickly it grew to Rosalie, Paddington, Newstead, Bulimba, all those places. There was so much people wanted to know. They wanted to know what was happening in the community, what was new and exciting. And we felt like we wanted to be the people to tell everyone. That’s just grown even further now that we can tell more and more stories with the addition of the website and social media. People used to say to me, “oh, do you have trouble getting editorial?” and I’ve always answered with “no way! You could fill up 10 magazines each month with the stories we were able to uncover.” T: And just on the family thing – that’s one of the reasons we were so interested in helping small family businesses, because we were a small family business ourselves. We had the empathy and understanding of what a small family business was like. We knew all about the struggle and the juggling, and the pressure and stress of that. We gravitated towards those businesses – trying to help them grow, with a product that was stylish. P: I think the reason we’ve had such longevity is because when we’ve needed to change, we’ve changed. We get everyone together and discuss things like magazine size, distribution model,

rebrands, etc. We’re so fluid when it comes to suiting the market and keeping up with trends. We’re not scared of change! T: Well, they say ‘adapt or die’ and I think maybe we’ve taken that to the extreme! Whenever a client comes to us, we’re always excited to push the boundaries and try something new. And as you say, we’re not a big corporation so we have that flexibility. P: On that note about adapting and evolving, the major time we did that was with Style Media. You know, in 2008 the GFC hit and the magazine world was starting to change. We had some great retail clients and we started trying to diversify and provide a service to create content for them. T: I guess that’s the thing – when the market changes, and not in your favour mind you, you’ve gotta do something to generate that income. And rather than go out looking for new clients, we really had to find new products for the existing clients. And that was the key to it – we had all these clients, but we were thinking of what else we could offer them. So, that was the key to starting the creative agency. And now, the agency is the biggest part of the business, which is amazing. What I love about our agency is that we have so many skilled people. They’re all qualified journalists, photographers, and graphic designers – they know how to tell a story. That’s what I love about our team the most, and its why I think people continue to use us. P: What gets me excited is when I see situations in the office where there’s a whole group of people getting around a table and they’re working on a solution for a client. Whether its online content, or an activation. And that’s been the journey through the whole 20 years, the talent we have around us is what makes us successful. T: I remember back in the early days, life was so simple and easy to navigate. Nowadays, it’s obviously evolved, but with that comes more energy and more skills and talent. We’re lucky because our team work as if they own the company. To have that passion in our staff, is so humbling. We’re very, very lucky. EHIND THE

GLASS Jean Riley is shattering the status quo!

By OLIVIA ASHWORTH

S

ince launching in 2018, Jean Riley has captured hearts around the world. The handcrafted glass jewellery being worn by influencers and celebrities, all while setting a precedent for sustainable practices and thoughtful design. Taking his first steps into the limelight, Brisbane founder Joel Riley sits down with Olivia Ashworth to discuss how it all began and what’s next for the business that’s right on our doorstep.

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

Take us back to the beginning, where did it all start? I started in May 2018. A year before that I was doing makeup and living throughout Bali. I did a jewellery apprenticeship in school and I was like nope, I’m going do makeup, and I kind of kicked it to the curb. But it came full circle. I was like, “You know what, I’ve always taught myself my whole thing… I taught myself makeup, I built myself that type of career, so why can’t I do it now?!” I always worried that people wouldn’t take me seriously (transitioning from makeup to jewellery), but at the end of the day, that was something that I needed to work on. I feel like now it’s at the stage where I don’t need to prove myself anymore. It sounds nasty but it’s a big thing, for creatives to feel that worry of feeling inadequate or not good enough. Your grandmother, Ms Gloria Jean Riley, is a big part of your brand. Are you able to tell us a little bit more about her? Yes! Jean Riley is my nan’s name. She had an antique store when we were younger, and I was always around all that stuff. She was like my best friend. She fell sick with dementia in 2016 so she didn’t really get to see the process of Jean Riley. Long story short, a lot of it is creating memories from her life. She was always an artistic person. I feel like Jean Riley has grown over the last couple of years to be a brand that’s not just about the

jewellery, but it’s also about the emotional connection and what we have – memories, feelings, emotions, and certain times in our lives. You’re just about to release your brand‑new collection, Oasis. Can you tell us a bit about that? In the middle of creating the collection I lost my nan, who is my brand. That, plus COVID last year, made me realise that life is short. We’ve got to cherish these times. That’s why this collection for me is a whole different can of worms. Oasis is more of a collection that is fun, not taking everything too seriously like I used to. We have this special little place and it’s not here forever, and the people that you love aren’t here forever, so you might as well make it your perfect little oasis. Where do you see yourself and the brand in the future? For me, it’s broadening the brand in a way where it doesn’t take away from the jewellery. I don’t think I’d ever do anything where it turns into more than jewellery. I feel like in 2021, as a brand and because of COVID, you’ve got to be very cautious. Because I’m only new to the world of fashion, I didn’t want to over commit – because that’s something as a creative you do. I looked at James Street stores in 2019, and I was like, “Don’t do that, come on, wait!”. I feel like the next year is, well, I’ll see you in another year and be like, “Woah what happened!”

QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS Biggest lesson you’ve learnt over the past three years? Don’t sweat the small stuff. One thing you hope people take away from your brand… Seeing the personal side to it, that each piece is created with either a fun or a sad memory. Three words to describe Jean Riley… Quirky, lovable, and maybe relatable (oh I don’t want to sound like a narcissist!). Current fave jewellery trend? I hate trends, but I have to say how there’s not as much pressure to be perfect. And I think that’s perfect! Photography by Elise Gellweiler

B

risbane’s broad appeal has seen it attracting the best culinary talent from far and wide, which has rapidly changed the face of dining in The City over the last ten years. The region is not only blessed with access to some of Australia’s most exciting produce, but has a mix of diversity, quiet confidence, and experimentalism that is making the dining scene something extremely exciting to watch evolve. We talk to five of The City’s best head chefs to look inside the cloche of what drew them to Brisbane and what excites them the most about dining in The City. Chef Brad Jolly of Alchemy was internationally recognised before he was just 19, working in some of the most renowned kitchens under Jamie Oliver, Marco Pierre White, and Eric Chavot. After travelling the world, the allure of making a mark in his home country with European cuisine that showcased local seasonal produce, brought him and his wife back – choosing to put down roots in Brisbane. “Brisbane is such a welcoming, friendly, and trending city. Many other cities are still living on reputation of the past,” says Brad. Contributing to the new culinary age of dining in The City is Head Chef of Naga Thai, Suwisa Phoonsang, who has become renowned for her blend of unique flavours and styles you won’t find in other Thai restaurants, such as her famous flower dumplings of winter melon, roast peanut, and sesame.

“Everybody wants to move to Brisbane and with the diversity of people coming to Brisbane, so too is the diversity of dining,” says Suwisa “This food represents my home and the relationship I had with food growing up, so I love that I can share that while using the freshest local produce that people can relate to,” she says. The access to the freshest Queensland producers is also a drawcard for Vinny Clist, Head Chef of COPPA Spuntino. “We work very closely with local sustainable producers with a passion to create beautiful, delicious food,” he says. The iconic Italian restaurant combines the romance of the Amalfi Coast with its quintessential lineup of Queensland produce. Think Fraser Island spanner crab, Mooloolaba swordfish, Gold Coast tiger prawns, Bangalow pork, and Sunshine Coast fruit and vegetables. Blending the tastes of Australia and Spanish cuisine just across the road is newcomer Rico Bar & Dining, where their

welcoming motto, “mi casa es tu casa” simply means “our home is your home”. Head Chef Lorraine Barradas serves up the finest pintxos, tapas, and paella in a relaxed but elegant setting and says that Rico always opts for homemade preparation and authentic flavours. “We not only provide our customers with a great gastronomic experience from different countries, but we also create the magical sense of being at a high-level restaurant with great service and breathtaking views of the river and the Story Bridge,” she says. Perhaps it is this natural ability to perfectly blend high and low that is making the Brisbane dining scene so unique and appealing. It’s certainly a formula that has worked for local dining great, Blackbird Bar & Grill, which reverberates through the entire atmosphere of the restaurant. Head Chef Tim Young says their beautiful wines and food are served without pomp or fanfare, creating an environment

that’s accessible to everyone. Although a wellestablished venue, Tim and his team keep an ever-rotating menu to continue to inspire and delight guests. “I think that we are helping contribute towards strengthening the craft of cookery here in Australia for our next generation of chefs, which is an opportunity I’m incredibly grateful for. Brisbane is a real up-and-coming dining scene,” says Tim. It is a sentiment also held by the team heading up Green Glass, the French bistro-inspired venue that wanted to shake up traditional French comfort food classics. Head Chef Damien Paliwoda says there is so much opportunity for new restaurateurs to try and test new concepts in Brisbane. “Being a European that has decided to make Brisbane home, I feel that Brisbane is just at the beginning. Brisbane is an adolescent learning quickly what it likes and what it doesn’t. For me, that is very exciting indeed,” he says.

With a fashion career that spans decades and continents, it stands to reason that Rachel Mellers is a homegrown stylesetter who’s passionate about creating conscious and timeless fashion. Here, she chats about living out her childhood dream, a stint in NYC, and showing kindness, always. Ever since I can remember… I have wanted to work in the fashion industry. I used to draw fashion design sketches all through my childhood and stumbled across some of them a few years ago and it was hilarious to see how bad they actually were. It’s such a nice reminder that I’m now living out my childhood dream. I knew that I wanted to start a fashion label… when I felt I had reached my limits in the Brisbane fashion scene and couldn’t think of another brand that I would aspire to design for. This pushed me to create my own brand and knowing that I would get to have the final creative say on my designs excited me. Living overseas taught me… a lot about how to treat people in business. I lived in New York and interned for a few fashion publications when I was 21/22 and the way they treated their interns and the junior staff was so unbelievably bad. I actually swore off the industry completely and moved into working in wardrobe on film sets. It wasn’t until I moved back to Brisbane and couldn’t secure a costume job here that I fell back into fashion and found the love for it again.

In every job I have had since, I always intentionally go out of my way to treat people with kindness and take the time to make people feel valued no matter their position or status. Since starting Apéro, I never expected… to see such exciting growth so early on and have people connect with the Apéro brand. We launched in 2016 with six t-shirt designs and only decided to throw our logo tee in at the last minute and thank God we did, as it was evident from the get-go that customers wanted to buy into the Apéro branded tees. Our logo basics have been a staple of the brand ever since and are still some of our best sellers today. Fashion is such a fickle industry. If I could share any wisdom, it would be… to shop better and smarter. We are focusing on this a lot at Apéro at the moment. We always want to be creating pieces that are unique, but also timeless and will be outfit builders for years to come. I think as consumers we need to be shopping consciously and intentionally and not impulse buying trend pieces that will end up in landfill in a few months. I love Aussie fashion because… we have so much variety throughout the country. Each state has its own unique take on fashion, adapting a lot of trends to be our own and suit our culture, climates, and lifestyle. Everyone looks to Europe for cutting edge fashion, but I think Australia is a major underdog in the game and has some amazing homegrown designers pushing the trends worldwide. A life of fashion and styling started on the streets for Brisbane siblings Tamihana (nine) and Ivy-Lee (six). With nearly 10k followers on their Instagram account, @IvyLee2015, they’re making their mark early in the digital age, one power pose at a time. By MELISSA MYRTEZA

KIDS THESE DAYS

W

e chatted to mum/manager Siobhan about this family affair!

Could you tell us a little about yourselves? Where do we start, lol! Tamihana is the youngest boy (they have three other brothers) and Ivy-Lee is our only girl. Tamihana has always been a fun, loving, and bubbly boy, and his sister is his everything. Even though they fight at times, they are inseparable. Plus, Ivy-Lee is one of the most sassy little six year olds! They both love the same things and they both really enjoy having fun behind the camera. We love your street style! What inspired this ‘look’ for you? Style is everything to Tamihana. He actually wants to be a stylist when he gets older! He even picks out outfits for Ivy-lee, who wants to be a model. We get our inspiration from everywhere, including TikTok, YouTube, and other amazing Instagram pages.

FASHION

What do you want to be when you’re older? Tamihana wants to be a stylist, model, or scientist, and Ivy-Lee wants to be a model or teacher! What are some of your favourite hobbies? Taking photos, watching YouTube, riding bikes, dancing, and spending time with the family. Have any modelling jobs come from your IG page? Yep! We have had two jobs and mostly collaborations, but hopefully more in the future. Who would be your dream brand to collab with? It would be a dream to collab with Zara, The Iconic Kids, and Fashion Nova Kids. What is one challenge and one positive thing about managing your own kid’s account? My one challenge is finding different places to shoot. The best thing about managing is loving what I’m doing and being able to let them shoot when they want.

Tell us about the journey so far? Where would you like to take it? Our journey started when Ivy-Lee won BONDS Choice award. She really loves being behind the camera. With age, Ivy-Lee started to ask when she would get to be in a fashion show. So, maybe something like that, we are open to any opportunities! What advice would you give to other parents looking to do the same? My best advice would be to not put too much pressure on yourself or your kiddies. Do it on your terms and don’t overload yourself with collabs. You want to continue to love it, not get stressed out over it. Most importantly, have FUN!

HEY KIDS! YOUR TURN: What celebrity would you like to meet and why? IL: I want to meet Ariana Grande because she’s the best singer. T: I want to meet Justin Bieber because he’s the coolest! Do you have a lot of fun shooting and posing with each other? T: YESSS! Ivy-lee is a silly billy and we love making jokes with each other. IL: I love taking photos coz it’s fun.

Have you always loved fashion and clothes? YESSS! Kids will be kids – they get changed so much!

QUICKFIRE QUESTIONS

What’s your favourite street in Brisbane? EAT STREET!!! I know it’s not technically a street but it’s the best!

Sneakers or boots? Sneakers. Trackies or jeans? Oooh trackies, defs.

You both have us hooked with your powerful poses! Where did you learn to model? Thank you so much! Ivy-Lee and Tamihana both practice in the mirror before every shoot. They will see a pic they like on Insta and practice! And they also just improvise whenever and just love having fun and being silly together.

Denim or plaid? Now that’s a hard one. BOTH! Favourite colour to wear? Every colour. Go-to accessory? Gold necklaces and glasses. Smile or serious? Serious. JUNE 2021

oyaging through the latest sass & bide’s collection is an illusory experience you’ll love to slip into. Their pre-fall 21 collection, After Eden, appears like a scene from a Frances Hodgson Burnett novel with a stage of dense autumn foliage speckled with wildflower bushes, winding woodland paths, and secret gates invitingly left open. It’s the local Brisbane brand that made it to global cult status. As one of our finest exports, in the near two decades since the brand’s beginning, sass & bide’s signature style has now become synonymous with striking, architectural pieces. With their unorthodox take on staples such as denim and suiting, as well as their intricate embellishment and streetwear sensibility, there’s no mistaking a sass & bide ensemble. Their latest drop sees mesmerising features in ruffled skirts, structured blazers, and billowing sleeves. Buttery leathers are shaped into sultry winter garments such as trenches, blazers, and paper bag pants. Tactile elements such as soft shearling collars, embellished knits, and luxury silk blouses complement a colour palette of dreamy winter neutrals, with a surprise hint of cherry red. In a world of turmoil, take a stroll down the garden path to a utopia of beauty from Brisbane’s own sass & bide.

POETIC and FICTITIOUS by its nature, this collection typifies the wondrous escapism to be found in fashion. Photography: Simon Lekias Styling: Vanessa Coyle Models: Nylow Ajing from IMG Models and Lottie from Vivien’s Models Hair: Michelle McQuillan Makeup: Kellie Stratton

ERIN LIGHTFOOT MEETS FASHION360 By ANGELICA SILVA

I

nside a home nestled in Red Hill is where you’ll find the talented ceramicist, Erin Lightfoot, surrounded by her whimsical art-deco inspired porcelain designs. But the vision to develop her own clothing line using her designs has always lingered in the back of her mind. It wasn’t until a conversation with the CEO and Director of Fashion360, Thuy Nguyen, led to Erin’s vision becoming a reality. Hi Erin! Can you tell us about your collaboration with Fashion360? We are creating a capsule range of silk garments featuring my print designs. I am a print designer who has been creating ceramics for the last 10 years. But what makes me stand out is my specialty in using unique colours to create prints that are playful, yet sophisticated. Fashion360 is an amazing fashion consulting service that supports emerging fashion brands. So, getting to work with the brains and force behind it all, Thuy Nguyen, is an unforgettable experience! How did the collaboration come together? During a phone call in 2020, Thuy threw the idea out there and I jumped at it. Working with someone who has so much knowledge in fashion and garment construction was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. 36

|

Could you tell us how you started in the fashion industry, to ceramics, to now this collaboration? I studied Fashion Design at QUT, where I developed an eye in print design which felt like ‘my thing’. After graduating, I turned my design skills to accessories which was an easier industry to break into than fashion. I developed a range of ceramic jewellery and homewares using my prints as inspiration. So, to celebrate 10 years as a brand, it felt fitting to undertake a new project that not only celebrated the prints but also local manufacture and small run production. In your ten years of business, could you tell us some highlights of your career and also some memorable industry moments? This might not be what you expected but building the brand up to the point where I was able to take maternity leave was a big achievement! Running a small business is so reliant on your individual skillset, that it feels impossible to step away. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

What do you think people can do better in order to support more sustainable business practices? Buy less and buy better. Buy pieces that you love, fit you well and make you feel good. CHECK OUT ERIN’S COLLABORATION AT 300 ADELAIDE STREET WEDNESDAY–SATURDAY 23 JUNE – 17 JULY.

GLOW A micro treatment, but with big results. The Skin Lab ambassador trials a new skin needling treatment, eDermaStamp®.

A

s a well-seasoned makeup artist, Leigh McCoy has always had a passion for great skincare. Living by the phrase, “Without a good skin base, applying makeup is the same as trying to paint a dirty wall,” she swears by looking after skin from top to toe. Essentially, when you have beautiful skin, you have beautiful makeup! This is where The Skin Lab comes in. From cancer checks, acne treatments, beauty therapy, cool sculpting, antiageing, and dermal fillers, The Skin Lab is an honest, ethical, and open team who are there to support you on your skin journey. Here, we look at how Leigh tried their 30-minute skin needling treatment and why it will get you glowing! Let’s get to know more about it, shall we?

38

|

What was your first thought about the treatment? I won’t lie, I was very nervous! But my therapist, Tahnee, was extremely honest, open, and professional. She made me feel very confident and comfortable after my initial consultation. Could you run us through the process? It’s a deep regenerating six-step method and worth every minute. Once I arrived, I got comfy in their cosy treatment room amongst the beautiful wallpaper. Even though you may be in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city, you’re immediately transported to a world of calm. First, the skin is double cleansed and then Tahnee applied a medical grade numbing cream. Once it set in, it was removed and then a gauze cleanse was performed, and my skin was disinfected. From there, an injectable-grade hyaluronic acid was applied before the eDermaStamp® skin needling procedure got to work. I highly suggest giving yourself 48 hours of downtime to allow healing without makeup. Once the treatment is finished you may be quite red, but rest assured, as this goes down in a few hours. I was quite taken aback when I saw myself straight after, but the results are unbelievable. STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

@STYLEMAGAZINES

What results have you noticed? Personally, I have had an incredible result! My skin is plump, hydrated, smooth, and I have less visible lines! I’ve had a few treatments at The Skin Lab now and I can 100% say that skin needling is my new favourite. How many sessions do you recommend? Most clients will need a minimum of four treatments for optimal results. What other treatments work well with skin needling? The LED Light Therapy add-on at $49 is a must for your skin post treatment! Who would you recommend for this treatment? It’s beneficial for clients who are concerned with open pores, texture, scarring, fine lines, and anti-ageing. This treatment is also highly recommended for people who aren’t quite ready yet for anti-wrinkle injections and/or filler. Hello, hydration! Why a 30-minute facial at Beauty on Latrobe is the key to your best skin yet, writes Fiona Williams.

In the same amount of time it takes to watch an episode of Younger, half an hour is all it takes for seriously glowing skin, thanks to the HydraFacial. A patented technology that’s designed to cleanse, extract, and hydrate, the HydraFacial is a machine that essentially does all the same steps as a standard facial but with more guts and precision. With my pores clogged and in dire need of attention, I walk into Beauty on Latrobe and sit down with my therapist, Calina, who is welcoming and very informative when it comes to skin health. The pre-consult is thorough,

but I know I’m in great hands considering everything is centred around what I want to get out of the session. For me, blackheads are a real problem, but Calina assures me that the HydraFacial is the perfect tool with the Vortex Pen ready to take on the gunk that’s thwarting my outer glow. The beauty of the treatment is that one device manages each phase, but it’s the extract stage where the facial really does its work. After the skin is cleansed, the pen gets to work sucking

all the dead skin and congestion out. At 30 minutes my skin was soft, plumped, and literally glowing. You can even see what’s come out in the discarded water, which is a lot more satisfying than you’d think. My mustdo recommendation? Add on a relaxing lymphatic drainage massage or light therapy for an extra kick. On the lip side... A pain-free procedure that gets you natural-looking, pillowy lips? Meet the lip flip from Cosmétique. Gone are the days of when getting your lips done meant “going under” and walking out of the clinic with bloodied and bruised lips. Recently, a new treatment has been gaining popularity for its subtle procedure in the lip augmentation family, the Botox lip flip, and multi award-winning clinic, Cosmétique, is right on top of it. With a completely nonsurgical cosmetic procedure, a lip flip can help you achieve a fuller upper lip, without the dermal filler. The procedure involves a small amount of Botox being injected above your top lip, relaxing the muscle around your mouth which then allows your top lip to gently ‘roll out’, creating the appearance of a fuller pout with more volume. The same filler can also JUNE 2021

be injected into your cheeks, chin, and nose to restore youth and fullness to your face. The expert cosmetic injectors at Cosmétique currently have a special offer for this month: receive a free lip flip when you purchase their Premium Juvéderm which lasts up to 12 months, or their Ultra-Premium Juvéderm which lasts 12-18 months. This offer is only available at Cosmétique’s Bowen Hills and Maroochydore locations. UPDATES FROM EXPERTS IN THE FIELD

CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY with Dr John Barletta

STYLING TIPS with Mark Ferguson

Early bird gets the worm

Giddy up

Many people – particularly night owls – find it challenging to start the day feeling happy, energised, and focused. Getting yourself going in the morning so that you are mentally, emotionally, and physically in good shape requires a routine or system. To win the day, you should win the morning. A strong morning routine will reduce your stress and increase your productivity, because of the focus and control you will develop. Your morning routine might include some of these: • Silence. Mindfulness, think grand thoughts, gratitude, and prayer. • Learning. Self-help reading, inspirational quotes, podcasts, and TED Talks. • Affirmations. Reflect on your values and challenge negative thoughts. • Movement. Make your bed, go walking, and hug those close. • Intentions. Identify a daily purpose, visualise reaching goals, and make a daily list. Having a good life is about continuing to do the things that have worked for you and doing things that will close the gap so that you become the person you want to be.

With the season cooling down, racing is now at the forefront of the event calendar, and it opens a fantastic opportunity to invest in a new classic suit. The beauty of bringing a new suit into your closet now is not only the feeling of brand new, but the readiness of any upcoming events and knowing your new suit will fit you perfectly. Or, if you have considered revamping an existing favourite, a new shirt, waistcoat or accessories like a hat, shoes or tie pocket square combination will have you sartorially set. My top tips for rocking a great race day suit: 1. Well-heeled comfortable shoes. Who knows how long this day will end up or how long you will be standing. 2. A three-piece bespoke suit of course. Naturally here at Wil Valor, we like to go to the top of the style stables. 3. Accessories can make or break the outfit. Avoid loud garish bling and colours and opt for smart, stylish accompaniments to your ensemble. Visit the showroom for a hassle-free consultation and we will have you race-ready in no time. It is also our most popular time to be treated since compression stockings are much more comfortable in the cool weather here in Brisbane. However, winter does bring some challenges: • Reduced movement. Most of us aren’t fierce enough to keep swimming through the winter months, but just make sure you don’t stop moving. Choose something else like a walk up Mt. Coot-Tha. • Weight gain. Extra kilos from comfort eating means that your legs are under more stress and can increase venous insufficiency. • Rugging up. Wearing additional layers of clothes means that you can get out of touch with your body and any changes that might be occurring on the skin’s surface.

Around this time of the year, you might have noticed yourself pulling on a jumper suddenly. Winter in Brisbane is starting and is rapidly advancing upon us! Zoom to the surface of the skin, and you can see the localised impact of this seasonal wintry change – coarse dry skin. This condition, which can range from mild to severe, has a broad range of symptoms that can affect us all differently. Repeated hot water exposure, long hot baths, campfires, dry heaters, and reverse air conditioning all play a part. To combat this, go for a heavier moisturiser than you normally would – something slightly thicker that really protects the skin from drying out. Australia’s own ASPECT range, iS Clinical Youth Body Serum, The Skin Lab Body Renew and La Roche-Posay make some brilliant products available for all skin types. Remember, if you are unsure, you can ask for help. Visit your local skincare expert or The Skin Lab now offers skincare consultations both in clinic and via Skype. ARTS

What brought you to the world of art? I’ve always felt drawn to the beauty and aesthetic elements found in my surroundings, whether this was in nature or the built environment. Art was a way to try and make sense of the world and myself – a place to reflect, explore new ideas, and find meaning. What inspired Aster + Asha Gallery? I realised there are so many amazing emerging artists out there making work, but that it can sometimes be overwhelming for collectors to know where to start. We aim to connect artists with first time art buyers as well as established art collectors. Why did you choose to host the gallery online? In a way, it allows for a more intimate experience as buyers can engage with artworks from all around the country from the comfort of their own home. Enjoying art is something that everyone should have access to. It has brought us a way to find meaning since the first prehistoric works were made eons ago.

BAYOUSH DEMISSIE

JUNE 2021

ART WAS A WAY TO TRY AND MAKE SENSE OF THE WORLD AND MYSELF.”

What was the first piece/artist you chose for Aster + Asha? One of the first artists on my radar was Yuria Okamura, whose work I came across in The Churchie National Emerging Art Prize held in Brisbane in 2017. I was immediately captivated by her intricate beautiful drawings inspired by sacred geometry and patterns. The sheer detail in her work is impressive and each piece portrays a poignant sense of mystery and wonder. In your opinion, how does a person know that a piece of art is right for them? Always trust your instincts, which tends to be true for most things in life! You will often recognise a genuine connection with a work, like that feeling when you go to bed and can’t get something out of your mind. You often discover so much more about an artwork as you live with it – they tend to reveal layers over time.

From failing in art school to a fruitful series that’s both sour and sweet, Brigitte Grant is the latest artist to grace the walls of Style HQ. By MELISSA MYRTEZA

B

orn from lockdown leisure, BG.STUDIO began, flourishing at a time when businesses were struggling most. One year later, she’s using her coastal roots to inspire as many people as possible with paintings and prints that pop! Hi Brigitte, thanks for chatting with us! Tell us, how long have you been painting for? Not very long at all, probably about a year now. My brand BG.STUDIO started in September 2020 – it’s still a baby! Where are you based? I’m currently based on the Sunshine Coast – it’s where I have grown up. The coast doesn’t take itself too seriously and that’s exactly why I love living here (for now anyway). Where did your art journey begin? This is a funny story. I actually failed art at school! But in saying that, I have always considered myself a very creative person and when COVID hit, I began painting just to pass the time. I really enjoyed doing this and eventually started

posting photos of the finished art on my personal Instagram stories. I was surprised about how many people loved my style of painting and I had people starting to reach out to me to purchase my art and create custom pieces. My hairdresser was the first to convince me to sell one to her. She then recommended starting an Instagram page and that’s when @BG.STUDIO__ started! What inspired your European fine line strokes? I really love art that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I find that the European style reflected in some of my pieces represents the simple things in life. Though all my pieces have a specific attention to detail, I like to make sure all objects I paint become realistic. With this in mind I also like to combine a pop art style, making sure colour is at the forefront. My latest series, The Fruit Series, is a good representation of this by taking something so simple such as a peach or an orange, and turning it into a bright, colourful piece.

If one of your paintings could hang on any wall in the world, which would it be? I think my main goal would actually be to get my paintings hanging on as many walls as possible. I love creating art and am super happy people love it as much as I do. I would be over the moon if I could just have original art pieces hanging in spaces all over the world, I love seeing them everywhere and how everyone styles them, it inspires me to create more! Three tips to styling your paintings at home? 1. A good frame (essential) 2. Make the painting pop with a statement piece (a rug, vase, flowers) 3. Don’t be afraid to add more colour Where do you see yourself in ten years? Honestly, if you had told me a year ago I would be selling paintings and prints to people all over the world, I would have laughed in disbelief, but here we are! I would love to continue to paint and create but in saying that, who knows – anything is possible apparently!

FEATURE

Founder of a female-led tech company, Johannah Maher, is reframing sustainability to make it a more fun, vibrant, and approachable topic all through one app. By ANGELICA SILVA

W

hen she wasn’t drawing rockets and spaceships in the top corner of her notebook, Johannah was mixing up the Lego block pieces of ships, castles, and space stations to build her own unique creations out of them. After spending over a decade as a wind turbine engineer, Johannah left her corporate world behind to challenge the status quo, much like how she used to mix the Lego pieces. Now the CEO of tech company, Impactr, which is set to launch on the App Store in June, Johannah chats to Style Magazines about how she and her team are working to inspire millions to do small actions for sustainability. Hi Johannah, can you tell us what Impactr is? In a nutshell, Impactr is an impact-tech company using technology for good – for sustainability and social change. It’s an app that allows users to create videos for up to a minute. Each video is a call to action, where people motivate one another to take action. For example, someone could make a video showing off their new compostable toothbrush and they can include information on where to buy it. Another example could be someone inspiring you to change your energy or superannuation provider to a greener one – one that doesn’t invest in fossil fuels. Sustainability is perceived and achieved in different ways to each person. So, Impactr is allowing people to come together and share and exchange ideas and tips!

Impactr is being perceived as ‘The sustainable TikTok’ by some people. How is it different to TikTok? While Impactr is similar to TikTok in that our foundation is short-form video content, we are forging something completely new: actions over likes. Our objective with Impactr is to move social media away from scrolling aimlessly, to encourage people to take more action. I’ve never been a fan of companies that present sustainability as this dark, doomsday topic. Impactr is different. Our branding is approachable, vibrant, hopeful, and fun. We want people to engage with sustainability in a way that makes them excited and happy to enact change, big or small. We don’t need to constantly remind young people that we’re on a ticking time bomb. Young people are already aware and awake, they have been for a long time.

Sustainable shopping can often cost more than some are willing to pay, primarily within the fashion space. What do you think about this? The perception of sustainable products being expensive and unattainable is flawed. We continue to believe we need to “buy cheap, buy twice.” Yes, certain brands are more expensive, but this is because their products are made with higher quality fabrics. Meaning, the clothing will last longer and wear better. So really, when you purchase these higherquality products that are going to last longer, you’re saving money in the long run!

How do you feel about people who jump on the ‘sustainability bandwagon’ and only purchase certain products because it’s a ‘trendy’ thing to do? My first reaction to this was, the more the merrier! Sustainability is trendy, this shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. We are driven by trends, fashion, and imitation, simply because we like to feel included. Honestly, I’m all for the sustainability bandwagon. Not everyone needs to be a sustainability expert.

What are you most looking forward to with Impactr? Straight off the bat, I could burst into tears of joy thinking about the people that will make their mark on the world with little actions. When people come onto the app, no matter who they are or where they come from, they will find it is a place where even the smallest action is valued. Because one small action leads to another, and one person can start a ripple that turns into the waves of change.

We need to let people engage with sustainability in their own way, and if that happens to be because it’s trendy, then that’s not necessarily a bad thing. They’re still making the switch and educating themselves, which is what we want in the end.

We need to let people ENGAGE WITH SUSTAINABILITY in their own way.”

BONAppétit By FIONA WILLIAMS

La Belle Vie is bringing the flavours of the south of France to Bardon.

W

hen it comes to classic cooking and mastering the art of butter, nobody does it better than the French. It’s worth travelling to the land of the baguettes at least once in your life, but until we can pack our passports again, there’s a little slice of Provence waiting for you in the beautiful suburb of Bardon. “Mademoiselle! You ‘ave a booking? Bien sur!” says Simon, maître d’ and co-owner, as he takes me through the lined fresh white tablecloths amongst the gorgeous naturally lit restaurant. Surrounded by glass windows, La Belle Vie sits elevated with views towards Mt Coot-Tha, making you feel literally on top of the world. It’s a Wednesday afternoon, which means it’s crêpes Suzette day and, would it be sacrilege for me to order dessert first? Because the table next to me has just had the crêpe station wheeled out and the delight on their faces is sweeter than a picnic at the Eiffel Tower. Behrooz, the assistant manager and co-owner, takes my order and we discuss escargot, which I’ve never had before, and he assures me I’m in great hands with head chef Samuel, who has over 20 years of experience with authentic French cooking. “Oui, let’s get the snails!” I say. Drenched in garlic and butter, it’s so flavourful. Surfing the menu, I try mussels, foie gras, Saint-Jacques scallops, and (but of course) French baguette with butter. Simon tells me it’s not a French meal without it. As I wait for my mains and wish I had another three stomachs to savour every bite of the flambéing, braising, poaching, and sautéing, I peruse the wine list and pair each course with a French drop. Champagne from Reims, Pinot Gris from Alsace, and Châteauneuf-du-Pape from 56

|

La Belle Vie is open for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Saturday, with oysters and Champagne at sunset on Fridays, Sunday long lunch with live entertainment once a month, and winemakers’ dinners throughout the year.

Rhone Valley – exquis! As the mains make their way over, plates of Caille (quail marinated in Dijon mustard), duck two ways, melt-in-yourmouth lamb with a literal smoking sprig of thyme, and salmon baked in tin foil (keeping all the flavour of the beurre blanc sauce), I can tell the avant-garde cooking techniques tell a story of fresh, local produce. Each bite is like a surprise with exciting textures and temperatures. A selection of fromage, crème brûlée (with the authentic hard top), and walnut tarte, ends what is better French food than I’ve eaten in France! It is the perfect venue for your next lunch, dinner, special occasion, function or event. LA BELLE VIE 1/60 MACGREGOR TCE, BARDON P 3161 1858 LABELLEVIE.COM.AU

With their passion for providing exceptionally fast service along with fresh, seasonal, and exciting new dishes, the cafe quickly grew to become a local community hub! The large 130-seat cafe has a quirky vintage style dining room and a large JUNE 2021

expansive veranda surrounded by bamboo, jacaranda trees, and natives. It’s the perfect setting for a relaxed brekky with the fam on the weekend, mid-week meetings, or if you simply need some ‘me time’ with a hot cuppa and a bite to eat before you continue your day. Just by taking a sneak peek at their menu, it’s easy to see why the locals can’t get enough. Their all-day breakfast is unbeatable. We’re talking everything from a hearty big brekky, classic smashed avo, their renowned ‘Benny’s on Blackwood’ range, to loaded French toast and house-made granola bowls with fresh seasonal fruit. For all the savoury fiends out there, their lunch menu is your match! The halloumi burger is a crowd pleaser along with their gluten-free and vegan options. Next time you wake up and want to try somewhere new for breakfast, go check out Blackwood Cafe & Espresso Bar in Mitchelton, you won’t be disappointed! LAST WORD

CAMERON ROBBIE Neighbours is resurrecting its connection with the Robbie family, as Margot’s youngest sibling, Cameron, moves to Ramsay St as lifeguard, Jesse Porter. By ASTRID TAEMETS What drew you to forging a career in acting? I love the medium of storytelling through movies. I love that we can learn from stories, how we can be moved or feel empathic towards a person or situation that is different from our own reality. It feels a little cliché to say, but we cross cultures and time to tell stories that we can all share a part in. It’s universal and powerful. With acting comes the process of auditions, and sometimes rejection. How do you overcome that? For me, audition rejection is a bit of a mindset game. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve changed my perception. I look at the audition as the end result, and try not to look beyond that, and what a potential role could bring. I also don’t really tell anyone if I’m auditioning, unless they’re helping me prepare. Other people’s excitement can be infectious and ultimately, a distraction. When I leave an audition room, I force myself to say, “man that was fun!” and let it go. What was it like when you got the call to be Jesse Porter on Ramsay Street? I was actually on a date at the time. I was living in a different city to the show (Sydney) when I got the call. I was obviously excited, but it was also a little awkward. I think we were both

like, “oh well, guess this isn’t going to work out then!”. Tell us what it’s like to be on the longest-running drama series in Australian television: Fast paced, iconic, and nostalgic. What have you learnt since being on the show? A lot. A show like this is unique with its own challenges, it’s a well-oiled machine, and it moves quickly. I’ve really relished in the challenge of it. I think you have to back yourself, relax, and enjoy it. Will we ever catch you working with your sister, Margot, down the track? That’s interesting. I can only speak for myself, but it hasn’t really crossed my mind, simply because I think I have different areas of focus and interest. But I think she’s doing incredible work, and I’m hugely supportive of it. If you weren’t an actor, what would you be? Well, some of the reasons I’m passionate about acting is that I like storytelling. I’m interested in people and understanding the how and why of their story. I’ve thought perhaps investigative journalism could have been an interesting alternative, although I’m not a huge fan of the discipline of sitting and writing. Always room for growth though…
