hey say a change is as good as a holiday and this month I’ve had both. On my first day back at Style HQ, after an amazing holiday, I could see the glint in our publisher’s eyes. While I was away, Tracy had been busy working on a re-design for the mag which we’d workshopped together prior to my holiday, but I know what Tracy’s like when she gets an idea in her head - there’s no turning back. “…the rest is up to you Christie. Just make sure it socks people between the eyes and it’s a bloody good read,” were her words. With that, our direction is to remain Brisbane focused and introduce more brilliant local people to you, but with a fresh new look. Some faces will be familiar, like the much-loved and always hilarious Sam Thaiday and his beautiful family on the cover, while on some pages, we’ll be unearthing new talent like Alex Coleborn, the designer behind fashion label, Gloria Dulcie (pg. 44) and Annie Kelly on page 39. And of course, we’ll keep you in the loop of new places that are opening and expanding! We’re also going to introduce you to more of our own fabulous team. Check out pg 40 where Style staffers share what’s inspiring them this month. They say it takes a village to raise a child, the same can be said for producing a magazine (among the many other things we produce). It takes a team of talented, hardworking people plus a lot of fun, sweat and tears, so it’s going to be great introducing you to our ‘tribe’ over time. Speaking of time, this year has flown by and Christmas is just around the corner. We’ve got all the necessary info to get you into holiday mode all month long. I hope you enjoy the new look Style as much as we enjoyed creating it.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS ’Tis the season to get back to your roots. We find out how some of Brissie’s best exports will be spending the festive season. Words by Tamille Head

A

s she prepares to take to the stage for the production of Mamma Mia, former Brisbane girl Sarah Morrison has returned home just in time for the holiday season. Conveniently, Mamma Mia opens in Brisbane on Boxing Day, giving Sarah the opportunity to enjoy some much-needed quality time at home with her family. While she now lives a self-declared ‘gypsy lifestyle’, often living out of a suitcase, Brisbane will always be home for the talented performer. How will you spend your time here, when you’re not performing? Just catching up with family and friends mostly. I spend a lot of time around Fish Lane between shows. How have you seen Brisbane change since moving away? Every time I come home, I’m just so blown away by how much Brisbane has developed. I have a great group of girlfriends in Brisbane who really have their finger on the pulse of all the cool places. Favourite local bar? Gerard’s Bar. How does it feel to be performing in such an iconic role? It feels a little surreal. I remember seeing the production when I was 12 years old and thinking “this is what people do for a job.” Now, that’s my job. Sophie is a dreamer, we are similar in that regard, like many girls I guess. PAGE 16

MOLLY GODDARD – DESMOND & DEMPSEY

PHOTOGRAPHY BY SALLY FLEGG

T

he back story of luxury pyjama label, Desmond & Dempsey, is the stuff of Hollywood meet-cute dreams. Brisbane girl Molly Goddard met her British partner, Joel, in a pub in Whistler, Canada. The two hit it off instantly, but had to part ways soon after, with Molly returning home to finish her studies in Brisbane and Joel moving back to London for work. They kept in touch with regular Skype sessions, until Molly later moved to London. She found herself sleeping in Joel’s shirts rather than her usual nighties. Unable to find anything that was as comfortable, the two set about designing their own. And so, Desmond & Dempsey was born. The label has seen great success since launching in 2014, now being stocked by the likes of Selfridges and Bergdorf Goodman.

STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

How do you spend Christmas in Brisbane? Well, on both my Mum and Dad’s side I have lots of cousins, all of the same age, so the day is usually spent eating and drinking and dipping in the pool! We land on Christmas Day this year, so we will be getting off the plane and straight to lunch - I am very, very excited! What do you miss about Brisbane when you’re living overseas? Two big ones - my friends and the sun. I love all the Queenslanders in Brisbane, and how much space there is. Any family traditions? Funnily enough, my mum has always given us a pair of pyjamas on Christmas Eve to wake up in on Christmas morning. Favourite Brisbane hangout over the

Christmas/Summer period? Not very original, but I do love James Street... Fondest memory of Christmas in Brisbane? My grandma doesn’t ever half do anything and one year she had a white Christmas. We all had to wear white and she rented furniture and the whole house was transformed. It was one of the few years we were all there together, and we ended up drinking and dancing till about three in the morning. Favourite Christmas food? Mangoes and cherries. What will you be wearing on Christmas day? Do you dress up or keep it casual? Probably a little white or red dress and some big earrings. READ MORE ONLINE PAGE 17

What Zoë Did Next How the beauty guru and everyone’s imaginary BFF came to write a book about farts. By Tamille Head

S

omewhere, between raising two adorable children, running a beauty empire, crafting hilarious Instagram captions and playing house with funny man, Hamish Blake, Zoë Foster Blake found the time to try her hand at children’s picture books. And by ‘try her hand’, of course I mean ‘completely nail’ because when it comes to Zoë Foster Blake, we’ve come to find the woman really knows no other way. Before my interview, I’m sent a copy of her new book, No One Likes A Fart. It arrives with a whoopee cushion attached, in true Foster Blake form. The girl loves a gag and it’s this fun breed of wit, entirely her own, that has won Zoë a whole dingin’ country of loyal fans. We hang out for news of her latest releases, both beauty and book-form. We laugh out loud at her posts on social media (who could forget the time she announced her second pregnancy in spectacular fashion, with a nod to a certain Queen Bey?) We run out and buy whatever she recommends. We watch in awe as she debuts the most extravagant and location-appropriate holiday wardrobes, taking mental notes to up our own game the next time we vacation. The thing with ZFB is that, despite being a downright over-achiever, she is still so damn relatable. A keen lover of children’s books, it was only a matter of time before the best-selling author wrote her own, given that she was reading her toddler, Sonny, up to 40 titles a week. “I’ve always loved and admired children’s literature. It’s such an incredible category. Done well, it can have incredible meaning, and [teach us] lessons about life,” Zoë says. “If I was going to do it, I thought I would take that responsibility pretty seriously. But then I wrote a fart book.” So, why farts? “Well, I’m surrounded by PAGE 18

“I’ve always, ZOË FOSTER BLAKE

them,” she laughs, telling me that her husband and son are constantly letting them rip. “I’m the lady of the house and I have to say, ‘oh yuck, go outside, that’s disgusting’. That’s how the idea came about. It’s almost been like a form of therapy because I’m so anti-fart,” she says. “Most fart books are quite vulgar and gross, aimed at boys; this is a very sweet little fart. I’ve probably done myself a disservice here, but I’ve done farts a great service.” But No One Likes A Fart is so much more than just a ‘fart book’. At its core, the story is about accepting yourself and finding a friend who loves you just the way you are; a message

LOVED AND ADMIRED children’s literature.”

that is just as important to the parents reading the book as it is to the children it was written for. Zoe enjoyed the process so much that she already has plans to write another picture book. “It was a lot faster than my other fiction work,” she says. So, what’s next for the golden girl of beauty? 2018 will see big stuff coming out with her hugely successful (and adorably-packaged) skincare line, Go-To, plus a much-anticipated new fiction release. “I’m just trying to enjoy my baby. Next year will be more family focused,” Zoe says. READ MORE ONLINE DECEMBER 2017

THE ROUND UP Holidays are here! With nothing but time to kill, lose yourself in one of these can’t-put-down reads. by Tamille Head

WORLDS OF YOU The bestselling author of The AntiCool Girl returns with a devastating, heartbreaking, brilliant, brave and laughout-loud funny memoir of truth, lies and everything in between. A raw, beautiful, sad, shocking and hilarious memoir of all the lies we tell others and the lies we tell ourselves.

WHAT HAPPENED For the first time, Hillary Clinton reveals what she was thinking and feeling during one of the most controversial and unpredictable presidential elections in history. She describes what it was like to run against Trump, how she coped with a devastating loss, and how she found the strength to pick herself back up. An inspiring read for the feminist in all of us.

A WONDERFUL LIFE We chat to the sporting hero about food, family and how they celebrate the festive season. By Tamille Head. VISITBRISBANE.COM.AU

M

ention the name Sam Thaiday and it’s a pretty safe bet that your mind will wander to thoughts of the bullocking and much-loved football star. But there is so much more to the Broncos prop than his impressive 279game career. At his core, Sam is a family man who has built a beautiful family with his wife, Rachel, and their two girls, Gracie, 4, and Ellsie, 2, in Samford. Despite his bold and powerful style of football, Sam is relaxed and jovial. You wouldn’t expect him to love poetry and art, but he does. With Sam recently announcing his retirement from the game, he will have plenty more time to explore these new-found hobbies when he hangs up his boots after the 2018 season. So, when it comes to the festive season, what does Christmas mean to the Thaidays? Keen lovers of food and wine, Christmas Day is a big affair in the Thaiday household. But sadly, there’ll be no slacking off his strict diet and fitness regime for Sam, who is preparing for the 2018 footy season. “Christmas Day for us has always been about lots of laughter and happiness with the family,” Rachel says. “We love big Christmas’s with the family, extended family and our closest friends. The more the merrier is my motto. Mum always made Christmas a big deal for us growing up.” Sam and Rachel have called Brisbane home for over 16 years, but are still discovering hidden gems close to home, such as the Roma Street Parkland where inspiration came for this month’s cover. “We live in a nice spot of Brisbane that has lots of little watering holes nearby, so we tend to go and explore them,” Sam says. “Weekends are usually filled with picnics, bike riding and we love a spot of fresh shopping at local Farmers Markets.” You might be wondering how the hugelycelebrated athlete remains so grounded and humble? Perhaps it comes down to his filterfree children. “I love seeing my Dad on TV, he is funny and makes me laugh,” Gracie says. “My Mum says he is not famous though.” READ MORE ONLINE

Describe your style I adore the sleek and chic style of French fashion, with a whimsical, bohemian edge.

One label to wear for the rest of your life... Zimmermann.

Song you never get sick of Everywhere by Fleetwood Mac. Both a visceral reminder of my childhood and a romantic flashback to the first dance I shared with my husband at our wedding.

Signature scent Gypsy Water by Byredo.

Artist you’re obsessed with Stanley Donwood – the incredibly talented artist behind the album covers of my all-time favourite band, Radiohead.

On Sunday, you’ll find me Wining and dining with friends or reading books on the beach with my husband and our pupper, Brandy.

Can’t-put-down read My current WWII read, The Girl from Munich by Tania Blanchard, is a hauntingly romantic and gripping read that almost made me late to work this morning because I couldn’t put it down.

Buy clothes that actually suit your body shape, as opposed to styles that are trending. I always think a flattering, well-fitting dress looks infinitely more fashionable than an outfit from a popular brand that’s ontrend but just doesn’t quite sit right or complement your figure.

FATHER AND SON TEAM, MICHAEL AND ASH HOLMES

Aloha, Brisbane Make a statement from the beach to the street this summer with Noosa Longboards.

G

rowing up in Brisbane, Michael Holmes spent many of his weekends travelling to the coast, in search of the perfect wave. “Surf culture was just a big part of my generation in the late 70’s and I embraced the lifestyle,” he says. “Watching old surf movies, I became really fascinated by the early pioneers on the Northshore of Hawaii.” This fascination led him to Noosa Longboards, where he became a loyal customer for many years. “When I got back to the roots of it, with longboarding and the early pioneers on the Northshore of Hawaii, the next thing I stumbled on was Noosa Longboards, which was absolutely living in that space,” Michael says. He liked the company so much, that when it came on the market in 2000, he bought it. “We couldn’t just let it go, we had to buy it. The brand MICHAEL’S had something special,” he says. GUIDE TO 17 years later, Noosa Longboards is thriving, now HAWAII operating in both Noosa and Bulimba. Michael is managing Fave spot to drink: the strategic and development side of the business, and Dukes Waikiki his son, Ash, is running the business operationally. Best beach: The father-son team have developed the perfect Waikiki business formula, with Michael crediting Ash’s talent for Place to stay: seeking out new brands and managing the design and Moana Surfrider online presence as paramount for the longevity of the store. Best month for “He’s had a big hand in reshaping the business the last waves: couple of years and modernising it,” Michael says. January or February Step inside the store and you’ll find a wide range READ MORE ONLINE of iconic labels including Okanui and Birdwell Beach Britches and new ones like Skwosh, as well as locally-made longboards, shaped by Tom Wegener and evidence of Michael’s deep-seated love for Hawaii. For the last decade, the keen surfer has been making the trip to Hawaii a few times a year to source out rare collectables and the vintage Hawaiian shirts that are so popular with their customers. “We’re very proud of the fact we’ve made it inclusive, not exclusive. We like people to feel they’re welcome from any walk of life. Surfer or non-surfer,” Michael says. As for the great city vs coast debate, Michael and Ash THE ICONIC NOOSA LONGBOARDS ORIGINAL TEE like to have a bit of both. “I love Brisbane; I love the city culture. Modern Femininity Alexandra Coleborn, Founder and Creative Director at Gloria Dulcie, chats to Tracy Sinclair about what’s next for the Brisbane based fashion label.

H

aving worked in fashion boutiques in her hometown on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, while studying a Diploma in Fashion, Textiles and Merchandising, it was Alex’s two-month trip to Europe that finally inspired her to kickstart her own label. Later moving to Bali to be with her family, she began combining her experience in fashion buying, her mountains of ideas, and her own personal style until slowly, Gloria Dulcie was born. Now living in Brisbane, we caught up with her to see what she has planned for the label. Describe your brand’s aesthetic? Gloria Dulcie is an independent, ethical luxury label that celebrates the complex sensitivities of the modern woman. Inspired by those exceptional creatives, that witty irreverence, honest beauty and spirited confidence, Gloria Dulcie blossomed in the radiance of modern femininity. Our focus is to create quality pieces with a poetic touch. Gloria Dulcie whilst adaptable and complimentary, seeks to reevoke the desire for personal style. What are some of the hurdles you’ve had to overcome in creating your brand/ collection? My biggest has been finding an ethical manufacturer that will do limited production runs. I first began manufacturing in Bali, but I am proud to say our new collection, The Ripening Seed, is all made locally in Brisbane! Which is your fave piece right now? The ‘Motion Pictures’ dress from our new collection ‘The Ripening Seed’. It’s that dreamy Summer essential that will take you anywhere. What is your vision for Gloria Dulcie? PAGE 44

Our focus is to create quality pieces with a poetic touch. GLORIA DULCIE ALEXANDRA COLEBURN

My vision for Gloria Dulcie is a rather philanthropic one. One of the biggest motives behind my desire for success is the passion to help and inspire others. Particularly Australia’s Indigenous people. I am currently working on a small collection of not for profit t-shirts and tote bags that promote the plight of our Indigenous Rangers. I truly believe their Work on Country is absolutely invaluable in terms of protecting our land and sea whilst providing positive social and cultural outcomes. Five years from now I see Gloria Dulcie stocked internationally with our own boutique. The most important thing to me is to be a wellrecognised social enterprise. Which we will be! Finish this sentence: I wish fashion …. Would slow down. Finish this sentence:When you wear Gloria Dulcie … Try not to spill anything. READ MORE ONLINE

Citrus colours to pack a punch

Christmas trifle coffee. Looking at 2018 You read that right. eyewear trends

We’re right in the middle of events season, and it seems there’s always something to celebrate. With so much going on how can you make sure your event is memorable? Styling is all important to create the right feel for your event, but with so many inspirational Instagram and Pinterest pics it can be hard to pick a colour or theme and stick to it. Sometimes when too many different elements get pulled into a single space it can look a bit chaotic. Working to a palette is a great solution. A great colour palette creates a feast for the eye, keeping the space interesting without looking too jumbled. We’re seeing a huge trend emerging just in time for summer. For your next event why not try a citrus palette of yellow, orange and coral against green. Whatever your budget you can create effortlessly stylish table centres, place settings, and complimentary décor with this fresh summery pallet.

A specialty coffee roaster’s goal when crafting a new blend is to create a balanced yet intricate flavour, with no single element dominating the cup. A sweet complex flavour with a mellow aftertaste is the hallmark of any delicious blend. This silly season at Wolff Coffee Roasters we are super excited about our newly crafted Christmas Coffee Blends. The Christmas Pudding Blend is a festive blend of the finest Arabica beans, sourced from four different origins, including Guatemala, Mexico, Kenya and Ethiopia. Equally delicious, our new release Christmas Trifle Blend offers notes of fresh cherries, raspberry jam, vanilla custard and sponge with a creamy mouthfeel. Just like Plum Pudding and Christmas Trifle traditionally served as part of the Christmas dinner we hope these unique, high-quality blends will form a beautiful tradition in your family household. Merry Christmas from our Wolff Pack Family!

When selecting glasses, pick a frame that’s unique. As the choice of eyewear collections continues to widen, styling across the categories pushes conventional boundaries. The classics remain a reference point with shapes such as the cat eye and the aviator returning each season, re-explored and reinvented. We’re already starting to see many trends emerge for the new year, across shape, colour and design. Keep an eye out for these in 2018! SHAPES: Square, octagonal and multi-sided shapes. COLOURS: Shades such as canary yellow, forest green, scarlet, olive, plum and flattering translucent amber have become surprisingly wearable as they are mixed and matched in clever ways. DESIGN FEATURES: Asymmetrical and new multi-shaped frames, advanced materials, hinge innovations and flamboyant designs.

Down by the water

It’s official; I’ve found the catch of the year. By Christie Sutherland. Sophisticated but casual, with next-level views, dreamy interiors that will have you pining for the Hamptons, and delicious eats that’ll quite possibly ruin every other future dining experience for you, Pier 33 is what we’ve been missing. You know where you’ll find me this summer. PIER33.COM.AU

rriving just in time for summer, Pier 33 is the newest addition to the Sunshine Coast’s dining scene. Start planning your weekends around a road trip to the coast, because you’ll want to check out this gem immediately. Taking over the old Yacht Club on the marina’s edge in Mooloolaba, Pier 33 has been brought to life by some of the best in the restaurant business. Andrew Hohns (of Rick Shores, The Coop and The Flying Cock fame) has teamed up with chef Simon Tayler who is a Noosa local returning to head up the kitchen after stints in various Melbourne and Sydney establishments. Catering to beachgoers and families alike, the venue has been carefully divided into different areas, including a full sit-down à la carte restaurant, a lounge and bar area for the more laid-back cocktail drinker, and two private function spaces. Plus, an outdoor area overlooking the marina with picnic tables, wire chairs and sprawling grassy areas perfect for picnicking. Now, for the fun part; the menu. And oh, what a menu it is. Moored amongst the fishing trawlers, this is a high indication of what to expect on your plate. Fresh seafood alongside sustainably sourced local produce, and a menu that focuses heavily on modern, eclectic sharing plates, perfect for those lazy long lunches and sunset snacking we all seem to love come summertime. From the snacks section, I would not miss out on the Soft Shell Crab Roll with kewpie and tobiko and the Fish Tacos with pico de gallo & chipotle mayo. The Sydney Rock Oysters with lime dressing are a must-try from the raw menu. Moving into the large share plates, do yourself a favour and order the Whole Market Fish with lemon caper butter or the Milly Hill Lamb Shoulder and peas. You won’t be disappointed. Wash it all down with one of their signature cocktails while you kick back and enjoy the sunshine and ocean air.

ucked away on one of Brisbane’s most iconic strips, Covent Garden is a lush, botanical oasis serving up over 120 different types of craft gin from across the world. Designed with summer afternoons in mind, and with weather that is a far cry from its London counterpart, Covent Garden boasts multiple bars across two levels, two greenery-draped courtyards, and a brilliant stained-glass ceiling dome. Sparing no expense on the décor, Brand + Slater Architects helped create an urban haven, unlike anything we’ve seen in Brisbane. Feeling both luxurious and welcoming, it’s suitable for everything from boozy-brunches to sophisticated functions. When you first step over the threshold you are greeted with a bright and colourful bar with rows and rows of gin just begging to be sipped. Whether you choose to sip on one of their many gins on offer (with fresh garnishes

COVENT GARDEN

selected to compliment that specific pour) or you prefer to savour one of their cocktails (the Clover Club, made with gin, raspberry, lemon and egg white, packs a punch that will have you going back for seconds), their expert team of bartenders are able to help you choose a drink to suit your specific tastes and preferences. With a clever guide to help you select tipple based on different flavour profiles (such as botanical, spicy, and sweet) it’s never been easier to try something new. The menu has been carefully crafted to cater to all drinking preferences, even if you aren’t gin-inclined, with pours like Aperol Spritz and Pimm’s Cup available on tap. If you like your drink served with tasty eats on the side, their menu includes everything from bite-sized morsels to heartier dishes. Their signature G + High Tea is not your grandmother’s tea party, and includes a watering can filled with their signature G + T (Tanqueray gin, creme de mure, citrus, cranberry, grapefruit, and strawberry and cream tea soda) as well as an impressive spread of sweet and savoury bites. With a spacious restaurant space and plush outdoor seating that has us dreaming of lazy Sunday afternoons, Covent Garden will surely be our go-to spot all summer long. VARICOSE VEINS with Dr Nicholas Kemp

Slip, slop, slap, and check!

Brows that make them all go wow

Keep your veins cool this summer

As summer is fast approaching, it’s important to perform self-skin checks to catch skin cancers early. This betters the chance for early intervention and prevention of surgery. It is very important that you get to know your own skin so that you know what is normal and what is changing. The skin cancers to look out for are; Melanomas, Basal Cell Carcinomas and Squamous Cell Carcinomas. Melanomas appear as new lesions or form from an existing lesion that changes in shape, colour or size and can be pigmented or unpigmented. Basal Cell Carcinomas are red, pale or pearly in colour and tend to be lesions in sun-exposed areas that grow slowly or fail to heal. Squamous Cell Carcinomas are thickened, red scaly lesions that may bleed easily, crust or ulcerate. If you are ever concerned about a skin lesion, seeing a dermatologist will ensure accurate diagnosis and early interventions.

They say defined brows can transform your entire appearance. We invented the first brow bar in the world and have been transforming women to feel confidently beautiful since 2003. A Brow Lift-Shaping by our talented Arch Angels can be recognised instantly! Women know what a Brow Bar Brow looks like because of its elegant very distinctive style. The famous Brow Bar Brow is one of perfection in colour, contour and consistency. It has a natural looking fullness, an elongated arch point and a beautifully lifted tapered tail. It’s not overdone or overly dramatic. It’s perfectly suited to frame your face and compliment your personality and lifestyle. We believe you deserve to be pampered and we love to prescribe real brow solutions using our coveted brow techniques. We have gained a reputation for transforming brows and empowering women worldwide.

Queenslanders love summer, it’s what we’re famous for. While the sun may not cause varicose or spider veins, it can certainly exacerbate them. If you have varicose vein symptoms, avoid excessive exposure to the sun or tanning beds, wear sunscreen, and stay hydrated! Follow these tips for a happy, healthy, vein-pain-free summer. Stay Cool. If you have vein problems of any kind, it’s a good idea to keep your body as cool as possible during the summer. Exercise to keep the blood circulating. In addition to offering great respite from the summer heat, swimming is one of the best ways to promote normal circulation and keep blood vessels from dilating. Remember the basics. Slather on the sun block and high SPF moisturisers, not just on your legs, but also on your face and nose, where thinner skin is more prone to developing spider veins.

Exercise your way to great jaw health

Talking about conversation

It’s all about the finishing touch

To develop strong jaws you need to exercise them well. The best exercise for your jaws is chewing, but what you chew makes a big difference. Our diet has changed dramatically from our primitive ancestors and unfortunately the introduction of processed food has seriously diminished the exercise of chewing. The difference between eating fruit in a tube and chewing a whole apple is certainly worth contemplating. Vets worked out a long time ago that soft food diets were contributing detrimentally to the development of periodontal disease and tooth loss in our pets. Their solution - a return to a harder diet requiring vigorous chewing. From early childhood and throughout your life, what you put in your mouth and how you have to chew it matters. Just some food for thought! Jaw exercise and development is a high priority at James Street Dentists.

The Christmas season brings lots of opportunities for socialising, yet many people feel anxious about their ability to be a good conversationalist. The great news is that interesting conversation involves a range of skills that can be learned and perfected. Relax, and know that everyone feels a little anxious and inadequate when socialising. You need to be present, and refrain from multitasking; put away your phone, and don’t look around the room. Maintain eye contact. Ask lots of open-ended questions that give people a chance to talk about their favourite topic, themselves, or their interests. Listen carefully so that you can interact by asking more questions, or talk a bit about your own experiences. Social gatherings are for light conversation, not lecturing, or educating. Remember, when you do share, be brief, be brilliant and be gone.

When suggesting a hat to clients as the perfect accessory for Spring/Summer, many say they wouldn’t suit one. The real reason is they don’t know how to wear a hat or which hat to wear. Let’s be clear; everyone can wear a hat, but keep this in mind: • Brims are getting better. Gentlemen have been wearing the trilby but now the trend is towards a fedora. The wider brim works well with the wider lapel suits we are currently seeing. • Two-tone hats are popular. This is where the band is a different colour to the remainder of the hat. The band is usually darker in colour. • Remember to ensure the hat complements the shoes, not the suit. • Try accessorising with feathers to complement ties or pocket handkerchiefs. • Men can wear felt all year round for a sophisticated look. Leave the straw for more casual occasions.

Haven’t made it to the Caribbean yet? There’s a whole world of adventure and luxury to discover, writes Kim Newland.

he beach boys were onto something! And although we didn’t get down to Kokomo, the surrounding Caribbean sure is magical and very worthy of your bucket list. Flying from Nassau to Great Exuma we spent most of our Caribbean holiday in the Exuma Cays. In this part of the Bahamas breathtaking islands are plentiful, with 365 in total they are best explored by boat, or like most travellers, superyacht or seaplane will also suffice. You guessed it, the Bahamas is the perfect place to rub shoulders with the rich and famous with many of the islands owned by celebrities. Even if you don’t spot one, jetting across the luminescent water on a speedboat with the bass pumping sure will make you feel like you’re on their level. My fiancé and I arrived in low season. And apart from the multiple hurricanes we encountered (thanks for just missing us Irma, much appreciated), I’d highly recommend this time of year. With a less crowded vibe and the locals in their down season, we were offered to

share paradise for a fraction of the cost. The Bahamian’s are some of the friendliest and trustworthy people you’ll meet. We became great friends with locals who offered their private boat in exchange for an esky full of coronas. A bit of local knowledge and we spent our days discovering secret sandbars, swimming with stingrays, and catching lobster for dinner all in the surrounds of Great Exuma Island. A half-day boat ride from Great Exuma, you’ll find the Exuma Cays. It’s within this

island playground that you can snorkel blue grottos finding starfish as big as your head, frolic with reef sharks or swim with pigs! Yes, they don’t fly but they do swim! Surrounded by crystal clear turquoise water is Big Major Cay Island, home to dozens of adorable, friendly pigs that welcome tourists daily. So whisk away your partner, or gather your gang to soak up the sun, sip cocktails in the shade, swim with the pigs and forget the real world, in the place they call ‘a quarter mile from heaven’. and we thought it was the perfect excuse to try something new and make a road trip out of the relocation!” says Erin. The couple drove over 3000km through other-worldly locations like the Mungo National Park and the Blue Mountains in New South Wales while on their journey. “We got quite a few compliments on our van along the way and people asked if it was rented or if we paid someone to convert it.” says Erin. During their travels to Queensland, Erin explains that most of their neighbours were in cheap old vans covered in garish graphics or plastic fantastic RVs that looked hard to park. “It got us thinking maybe there was a market for more hand-crafted camper vans and the idea for Drifters grew from there.” she says. Now based on the Sunshine Coast, Erin and James launched Drifters Campervans to provide

When the van arrived on the driveway of her thenhome in Melbourne with a dead battery after carrying her brother and his mates across the coast of Australia for six months, Erin and her partner James decided to try and bring the van back to life. It wasn’t long before the couple had replaced the battery, stripped the interior, removed the bench seat and cleaned it up to make way for fresh new flooring and ceiling, wooden cupboards and a functional L-shaped seat that folds out into a bed. “At the time we were living in Melbourne, then James was offered a role in Queensland
