f I could fall into any page of this month’s Luxe Issue, it would have to be This Old House on page 68! That light! That pooch! Too bloody cute. Oh, and I wouldn’t mind falling into the moody Moroccan jewel spread from one of our favourite local designers, Christie Nicolaides, on page 32 – a girl can sure dream. This month we’re back to print again (wee!) to end the year with a bang, bringing you all the goodness of BNE you know, love and are yet to uncover…

NOTE
Y
es! We made it. We might be tired and a bit emotionally wrung out after this hella year, but hey, it’s December, which heralds the start of fun times, days on the beach, and time spent with loved ones. It’s also our last mag for 2020, so we’re keeping the good vibes flowing with this beautiful Luxe Issue which features holiday fashion, places to meet and play, and interviews with some particularly talented people. This month we also introduce our cover talent – Queen Street Mall Fashion Ambassadors Annabel Falco and Mayowa Adeniyi, (which is especially cool given that Annabel was one of our own Style staffers several years ago). So, it’s great to have Annabel grace the cover and pages of Style alongside Mayowa. We’ll be back in January with our digital magazine, so in the meantime, we’d like to wish all of our readers and advertisers a very happy festive season. Hoping you are fortunate enough to spend time with those you love most, enjoy a much-deserved break, and look forward to a healthy and prosperous 2021! I’m off to have a mimosa – 2020, we OUT!

I
was born in the bustling city of Seoul, South Korea and I came to Brisbane in 1992, where I now call home. In 2003, I swapped my study in music and playing the piano for fashion, and launched my simple, classic and sophisticated label ‘Gina Kim’ after winning multiple awards, including the coveted RAQ Fashion Supreme Award. There’s no doubt I’ve always been interested in fashion, but styling in particular is something I’ve always been drawn to. Throughout my career, my label has been sold internationally and been showcased in New York, Europe and Asia – not to mention loved by numerous celebrities! My favourite part of the business has always been working with a flood of fabulous creatives who are all their own unique individuals – creating beautiful clothes is just an added bonus. My advice to other young designers is to figure out your brand early, know your market first, and be open to moving fast and experimenting. Brisbane style is where I like to draw inspiration from, with its fresh feel and colourful nature, along with everything else I see, feel and listen to. Right now, I’m obsessed with sorbet pastel tones. After a long break, I’m excited to be relaunching the Gina Kim SS21 collection – stay tuned for more sartorial statements from us next year!

THE NEW GUARD THE NEW GUARD THE NEW GUARD Meet Queen Street Mall’s fashion ambassadors.
Cover stars and new Queen Street Mall fashion ambassadors, Annabel Falco and Mayowa Adeniyi, are breathing new life and style into The City. Interviewed by FIONA WILLIAMS
All fashion available from Queen Street Mall Annabel wears: David Jones Bianca Spender Silk Kestral Dress $775, Wittner Rikita Leather Sculptured Heel $220, Mimco Atlantis Earring $149, Fendi Nappa Leather Bag $3,250, Stylist’s own jewellery. Mayowa wears: Calibre Striped Seersucker Suit Jacket $599, Calibre Mercerised Cotton Jersey Crew Neck T-shirt $99, Calibre Striped Seersucker Suit Pant $279, Our Legacy Earth Sunglasses $440, Stylist’s own shoes.
What do you love about being the new faces of Queen Street Mall? Annabel Falco: I used to live in Brisbane’s CBD so it has (and always will) hold a special place in my heart. The iconic buildings and architecture. The amazing variety of restaurants and bars. Designer boutiques mixed with highstreet classics. I feel very honoured to be able to represent the heart and soul of Brisbane. During every trip into the city, I always manage to discover a new brand, store or designer. It’s any fashion enthusiasts dream job. Mayowa Adeniyi: I like the fact that we get to really showcase what our retailers are doing. There’s so much happening in the precinct, from the ones tucked away in arcades and off the main street, to events that people might not know about – it’s essentially our job to bring them to the people! Plus, I think it’s fair to say we both love playing around with different looks. What are your go-to retailers? A: Depends on my budget and needs but I’m on a first name basis with the staff at Zara, Uniqlo, Aje, Sass & Bide, Mecca, Chanel and Fendi. M: There is something for every price point, however the stores that are offering something for every man are COS, M.J. Bale, Calibre and Uniqlo.

What is something you think is utterly underrated about shopping in the city? M: The stores are nicely spread out, so you can easily make a day out of it and find everything you’re after in one place. Another unique thing about city shopping is the ability to move around between centres while getting some nice outdoor air. A: The variety of fashion retailers. There is something for every budget, age, shape, lifestyle and taste in the city!
Annabel wears: Zara Buttoned Blazer $219, Sass & Bide Look Twice Short $350, Zara Leather High Heel $129, Fendi Eyeline Sunglasses $577, Fendi Glasses Chain Necklace $890, Fendi Peekaboo Iconic Interlace Mini Bag $7,200, Stylist’s own jewellery.
Mayowa, talk us through your styling for the cover shoot – where does a guy start for these looks? M: Like everyone in Brisbane, we have to take the weather into consideration, rather than making it an excuse. I looked at the fabrics on offer this season from Queen Street Mall retailers and found a lot of linen, seersucker and cotton options available. These are easy to mix and match depending on if you want to dress up or down. Annabel, how do you piece bold colours together (and still make it work!)? A: I’m actually not someone who typically wears a lot of colour, but when I do, I go BIG! I love colour blocking so I tend to pick three bright and bold pieces to wear in one outfit. The key is to keep the textures, prints, embellishments and jewels to a minimum.
“THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERY PRICE POINT!” What were your favourite looks of the cover shoot? M: I loved the bold striped summer jacket (from M.J. Bale), with contrasting pants (also from M.J. Bale) and tassel loafers. Any opportunity to mix and match is where I really shine. A: The day before our shoot, I was walking through David Jones and the most amazing Bianca Spender orange silk dress caught my eye – I knew I had to shoot it for the

“LET’S END THE YEAR IN OUR MOST FABULOUS HEELS AND DRESSES!” Style December issue! It was my favourite look, too. The entire Bianca Spender summer collection has me inspired. What do you think is the summer fashion trend of the city? A: Big, bright and bold! 2020 is DONE with sweats and sneakers! Let’s end this year in our most fabulous heels and statement dresses! Think, “more is more”. M: Polos for the guys. If you’re not keen on wearing a long sleeve under a jacket, a polo will get you looking just as smart. And, if I can predict one for the ladies – sportswear with tailoring. Ok, Annabel, once you’ve shopped till you dropped, where do you go to re-fuel? A: Marchetti. A cappuccino and a croissant is my standard order. All fashion available from Queen Street Mall Annabel wears: Zara Buttoned Blazer $219, Sass & Bide Look Twice Short $350, Zara Leather High Heel $129, Fendi Eyeline Sunglasses $577, Fendi Glasses Chain Necklace $890, Stylist’s own jewellery. And Mayowa, where is the first place we will see you strutting a new ‘fit? M: Any restaurant along the river for a long Christmas lunch, or a rooftop bar for the New Year’s Eve fireworks. What will we be seeing from you both in 2021? A: We do actually have a hot insider tip happening next year! You will soon be able to book in style sessions with us, but that’s all we can give away right now. So stay tuned! M: I’m going to work on incorporating more luxury. I think the high-end chains we’ve got at the bottom of the mall are the perfect opportunity to start experimenting with some unique menswear looks from overseas.
CITYSLICKERS We chatted to our favourite movers and shakers about what they love most in the heart of Brisbane City. Michael Zavros Husband, dad and artist with a horse What do you love about Brisbane City? I love the change of energy. I’m by myself working quietly most often, but when I head into the city I see people – lots of them. Everybody moving in different directions, leaving invisible trails of their immediate lives. Where’s your favourite place in the city? The Story Bridge from underneath, down at Howard Smith Wharves. It’s such a beautiful bridge, especially at night. Any favourite shopping locations? I wear glasses now so my favourite store is Optiko in Tattersalls Arcade. I’ll then get an espresso at Marchetti Cafe afterwards.
Lee Lewis Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre What’s the best part of Brisbane? The people! Everywhere I go, people are warm and friendly and helpful. There is a spirit of great hospitality in this city that makes it a joy to live in.
Best memory? A school excursion to what was then the Queensland Art Gallery. I loved William Delafield Cook’s ‘A haystack’, each stalk of hay is painted in fine detail. I remember thinking, “I want to paint like that one day.”
Where is your favourite city art? Leonard and Kathleen Shillam’s ‘Pelicans’ sitting outside the Art Gallery have a really special place in my heart. Where do you feel creatively inspired? I find the Botanic Gardens in the city magnificent.
Photography by Kara Rosenlund
Anna Spiro Mum, designer and creative director What do you love about the CBD? I love the old school feeling of the Queen Street Mall. I remember going in to see the amazing Christmas windows with my grandmother as a child and it was always such a highlight. Where did you get the inspiration behind your latest project, NAGA THAI? The colours of Thailand and the beautiful fresh product provided the inspiration for the colours we used, and we also wanted to embrace a fun 70s vibe to make people feel excited and happy! Where is your favourite city space? I love the old Naldham House which is currently vacant. I would love to get my hands on that beautiful, historic building!
What part of the city do you look forward to visiting the most? The Bille Brown Theatre when it is full of people looking forward to a great night of storytelling! After a year without theatre, I am so looking forward to a 2021 full of great plays.
What’s your first memory of the city? The Shingle Inn. We used to go there with our grandparents and we always had the waffles and spiders. The beautiful old building it was housed in will always stay in my memory. DECEMBER 2020

You’ll also find the magical space of Stephen Dibb Jewellery, where you can enjoy creating something truly beautiful – it’s all about having fun! Behind THE Craft at Brisbane Arcade. By FIONA WILLIAMS
O
ne step onto the terrazzo tiles of Brisbane Arcade and you’re transported to a timeless elegance that’s been in the heart of Queen Street Mall since 1924. Behind the beautiful shop fronts with glistening jewels, ticking watches and high-quality fashion, you’ll find a collection of artisans and craftsmen working away to bring you the best of what Brisbane has to offer. Before your next visit, meet three of their extraordinary makers.
BARBARA NICHOL The Pen Shoppe Pen lover and calligrapher extraordinaire In a world of iPhones and Instagram, you would think the humble pen may have taken a back seat, but not for Barbara Nichol. With a long career in penmanship, she is one of Brisbane’s most established and passionate calligraphers, running The Pen Shoppe for over 41 years. Throughout that time, it has served generations of pen loving families, survived the year 2020, and is still one of the community’s favourite shops in Brisbane. “Many things at my shop cannot be found easily elsewhere in the world. For example, my manager does the most perfect pantograph engraving on pens. We also have around 40,000 separate items in the shop to
choose from,” Barbara says. With an impressive career, Barbara was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to study the teaching of Penmanship and the Forensic Examination of Forgery at Scotland Yard in 1980. “My training as a teacher has never left me and I have written several manuals on penmanship with many being translated into French and German. For anyone wanting to improve their writing skills, The Pen Shoppe has two-hour workshops which are run on Saturdays in the Arcade Scriptorium upstairs,” she says. Many people don’t know it, but The Model Shoppe on the Gallery Level in Brisbane

Arcade is also part of The Pen Shoppe. Full of Caran d’Ache artist materials and models of things that artists like to draw or collect, as well as many antique pieces. “This is a little-known magical place where I do my calligraphy commissions and teach,” Barbara says. Times may have changed over the years but The Pen Shoppe has still remained every part an institution of Brisbane. They still handwrite the dockets and serve each customer individually, adding to the exquisite charm of the space. With that, Barbara’s most expensive pens are from Montblanc and Caran d’Ache and can be over $100,000. “I love all the pens in the shop and there is always a pen (under the glass of our counters) for every person!” she says.
BRONWYN SMITH Irma J. Smith Fashion House Sartorial pioneer and fashion lover Since 1995, Bronwyn Smith has been dressing well-known women of Brisbane with an elegant twist. No stranger to fashion, her mother, Irma, founded the business and Bronwyn has followed in her footsteps, believing that “life’s too short to wear boring clothes!” When it comes to her clients, Bronwyn is there every step of the way. From a design consult to sitting over a coffee to understand how they can create the perfect piece, Bronwyn says, “It’s been such a privilege to be involved in so many special experiences for my clients – it’s too difficult to narrow it down to one favourite memory! They are all special.” From the likes of dressing Australian journalist and news reporter, Sharyn Ghidella, to being a part of the coveted Mercedes-Benz Fashion Festival Brisbane, Bronwyn says Irma J. Smith Fashion House is a delightful hidden gem of Brisbane Arcade with many people saying they have walked past but are too afraid to come in. “Once they come in and have a chat with me, they feel right at home and regret not coming in sooner!” she says.
Life’s too short to wear boring clothes!”
“It was my dream to open a shop in the Arcade.” JAMES TYLER James Tyler Jewellery Master craftsman and diamond whisperer Since his apprenticeship in the late 80s, James Tyler dreamed of opening his own shop in the Arcade. Now, with three decades up his sleeve and forging a strong name for himself in the jewellery business, he will never forget the moment he secured his shop in Brisbane Arcade. “The day I got the go-ahead for the current retail shop is my favourite memory by far! It was a bit surreal really – my wife told me that it’s only a shop, but she doesn’t understand. I love being here,” he says. For decades, he has been making and designing for customers to create their idea of perfect, but the real magic was when he first started. “When I opened up my shop and had
DECEMBER 2020
to create 100% from scratch, I had complete and total freedom. Those first dozen pieces of jewellery and doing what I wanted without constraint was (and still is) scary and thrilling all in one,” he says. But it hasn’t all been the traditional sparkling requests. “I have seen a few trends come and go, but as for bizarre requests, few things are more challenging than unusual jewellery piercings. Thankfully, I have never had to measure anyone up, but when classy customers would describe where and how they wanted something designed, accompanied by photos from the internet, I may have blushed!” James says. Helping him keep centred and sane, James shares his passion with a great team that make the magic happen. “Without these people, this wouldn’t be possible. Thank you, Kelly, Natalie, Adrian and my wife, Desiree,” he says.

AHEADof theREST Nurturing and enhancing the development of children at Brisbane City Child Care.
F
or many parents, finding the right care for your child is the most important decision you can make. After all, you’re leaving the most important person in your life in the hands of someone else! Brisbane City Child Care (BCCC) believe that children benefit from a range of stimulating programs and activities, and with their newly upgraded and purpose-built centre, kids and their families are welcome to be a part of the BCCC community. It’s a centre that’s aligned with the best care and attention on offer and plenty of style to boot. Last month, we were lucky to share their very special 2020 Spring Gala in partnership with Rolls Royce and Brisbane BMW. Synonymous with class, BCCC is unlike anything you could ever imagine here in Brisbane. Behind the brains of the family-owned centre since 2004 is Chris Buck, who not only has over 30 years of passionate experience in the industry, but an engineering background that has benefited countless children who have wandered through its doors. When Chris has an idea, he has the attitude and the tools to make it happen. From a fully-fledged running creek bed on the enclosed rooftop with a functional water pump, to an indoor day-time sky that mimics the same weather as outside, and real-life green tree frogs to observe up close and personal, there are carefully curated sensory moments around every corner. Not to mention, BCCC’s day-to-day programs are created by their experienced and qualified early childhood educators and are developed around an emergent 28

play-based curriculum to ensure the very best for each and every child. It’s inspired by the passionate team’s framework of the highest quality, principles, practices and outcomes that support and enhance young children’s learning from infancy right up until pre-prep. With the highest accreditation for their standard of service and recognised as ‘Exceeding National Quality Standard’, it’s no wonder Brisbane City Child Care surpass every expectation when it comes to the care and development of your little ones. FASHION PERSONIFIED By FIONA WILLIAMS
As the General Manager of Zulu & Zephyr, what exactly does your role entail? As GM, I am responsible for overseeing our team of 15 staff and managing the day-to-day operations within Australia and the United States. A typical day can involve anything from working with our design team on upcoming collection timelines and samples, preparing global sales schedules and budgets, overseeing marketing events and calendars, to touching base with our retail and warehouse teams across Australia, the United States and Hong Kong. How did you start in the industry? I started working after school as a retail associate. I have worked with some amazing and interesting leaders, experiencing the highs and the lows of the industry. I’ve worn many hats throughout my career; in particular, I have worked alongside industry leaders and CEOs at the forefront of expansion and learning behindthe-scenes fundamentals of running multi-million dollar businesses. How did you develop your creative style? Learning to lean into your individuality is a beautiful thing. It’s taken time to embrace being just me, and becoming a mother has excitingly given me a new sense of openness and creativity. Best career advice? Work hard and know your worth. What have been some Zulu & Zephyr highlights? There have been many, but two highlights clearly stand out – one being our Fall 2018 collaboration with Lara Worthington. She’s the quintessential ZZ girl and personal style muse, so being able to work alongside Lara on location

in Malibu, California, was an incredible opportunity. However, I would say my proudest achievement to date was establishing our US-based company and directing our first international flagship store in Los Angeles last year. What is it like juggling motherhood and a successful career at the same time? It’s been a time of adjustment – adapting to the natural flows of motherhood – but it has also been the most inspiring and fulfilling period of my life. I’m thankful that I have an amazing partner and team rooting behind me. For now, I’m enjoying a few months of maternity leave before I officially return to the office early next year. Tell us a little about the inspiration behind the latest summer collection? Our Resort 21 collection is an ode to our favourite summer holiday. Busy, sun-soaked days lounging by the shore, exploring coastal towns and indulging in the simple pleasures of summer. What pieces are you obsessed with? Naturally I’m drawn to classic shapes and styles, and a logo tee is a no brainer for me – so our Holiday T-Shirt is my number one go-to this season. What do you expect to see in 2021, fashionwise for Zulu & Zephyr? You can expect to see a focus on fabric, with a new emphasis on conscious design. Australian style is very transeasonal, so we are continuing to create pieces that will inspire but also offer longevity and versatility for seasons to come. DECEMBER 2020

SUMMER ESSENTIAL Fresh off the catwalk at Brisbane Fashion Month, Shade Swim’s latest swimsuit, Adore, is diving into our summer holiday wardrobe as a season-staple for the months to come. There’s often a double standard when it comes to being sun-safe and stylish, but with a national push to ban the tan, covering up has never looked sexier. And, thanks to our own local hero, Shade Swim, embracing it has never been easier. Last October, the Brisbane swimsuit brand unveiled its latest collection, Embody, at the Brisbane Fashion Month Resort Finale runway. Chic, sun smart and stylish swimsuits strutted the runway, making a case for more is more when choosing your beachwear attire. While the collection showcased an array of summer sun-friendly options, fashionistas will be jumping out of their skin to get their hands on the Adore swimsuit. With inspiration drawn from old Hollywood glamour,
the Adore features a classic silhouette, accentuated by the sleek long sleeves, contoured mesh waist panels and flattering neckline. Shade Swim founder Alyshia Morris, who started the brand back in 2018 after being diagnosed with stage 1 melanoma in 2013, said she was determined to help women change their perception when it came to sexy, stylish, sun-safe swimwear. “I want women to know they can still feel feminine and confident while remaining sun safe,” she says. Made from UPF50+ fabric that features Smooth Firm Tighten technology, and flattering shapes, cuts and designs in a range of sizes from 8-22, Shade Swim pieces have been embraced by sun smart women from Australia and New Zealand. S
andy toes, windswept hair and a seaside sense of style pretty much describes every Brisbanite who’ll be hightailing to our coastlines this summer! Keeping it cool, calm and utterly coastal is the definition of summer luxe when it comes to your fashion this season. Aligning perfectly with our laid-back Queensland attitude, we’re seeing terry-towelling sets, muscle tanks, and wide-brim bucket hats on the uptick as relaxed resort wear takes over our outfits. Chuck a pair of oversized sunnies in your beach tote, slide on some chunky sandals, and finish with beaded pearl accessories for a getup perfect for unwinding by the waves.

All business, ALL PLAY It’s double the local support when two of Brisbane’s distinguished businesses come together for a colourful collaboration.
Y
ou know Toyota as the global brand steeped in rich Japanese heritage, well known for its adherence to tradition (and for good reason!). However, the iconic name is now rocking a new look that’s breaking the mould of strictly business. In partnership with URBBANA, Downtown Toyota is ditching the plain white shirts and boring blouses, and taking an eccentric approach in strokes of Jacaranda purple with a uniform change. Dealer Principal, Liam Gaskin, is the instigator of the revamp, adding another notch to his belt when it comes to changing the public perception of car dealerships. “It was really important to me that staff enjoyed what they were wearing,” he says. “So much so, that we specifically didn’t embroider any logos or names on the uniform, so the team will be able to enjoy an after-work drink without having to change or feel uncomfortable out and about Brisbane.” 34
|
Sam Abi is the founder and designer of URBBANA, and the creative mastermind behind the move. “We’ve been making corporate uniforms for almost five years now, but I have to admit I’ve enjoyed working with Downtown Toyota the most,” Sam says. “Knowing we’ve broken the cycle of the boring and traditional ‘car sales’ uniform has given us a sense of achievement and made the project much more pleasant.” The new uniforms take into account elements of design that you’d expect, such as comfort, practicality and the Queensland weather, but also flamboyance in the different colour options – purple, lilac, navy, and cobalt blue. The dress shirts are finished with the signature URBANNA insert along the button line, and the Saturday polo shirt has a touch more flair, with a subtle floral insert on the collar. “More and more businesses like Toyota are realising the importance of personal and corporate image, and being the first adapters of a unique, corporate style will definitely put them ahead of their competition,” Sam says.

Rags to riches It’s the circle of style. By DINUSHKA GUNASEKARA Instagram and asking if you can have that shirt she hasn’t worn since. But the true future of a circular fashion industry is considering how a garment will be made, used and disposed of from the get-go. This means it can be produced sustainably, using natural resources, and be kept in use for longer. In Australia, initiatives such as Worn For Good are pioneering the circular fashion movement. In collaboration with fashion heavyweights like Matteau, Aje, Brie Leon, Maurie & Eve, St Agni, Bassike and Rylan Studio, you can shop donated and pre-loved designer apparel, with 100% of profits going to help at-risk women and the health of the planet. And, thanks to the world of circular fashion, when those long-lost trends finally do come back, they’ll be made just the same!

When you hear someone say, “Fashion is circular,” they’re probably saying, “Don’t throw out those denim boots and cone bra – they’ll be trending again in no time!” However, what they should be saying is, “The fashion industry is designing out the waste, and designing in a world where fashion doesn’t cause its end.” Circular fashion is a sustainable movement that aims to replace the detrimental linear production line of fashion with a system that circulates the same materials for as long as possible. Think of it like the reincarnation of clothes – a piece lives a full and happy life, collects its karma, and is reborn to serve a new purpose again and again and again. With the youngest client at 11 years old and the oldest client at 80, she believes Pilates is truly for everybody and their whole body health. “Body Revolution is a community that views Pilates as part of your lifestyle,” Sharon says. “The mind-body connection through Pilates continually teaches me more about my own body, and how I can help others improve their mobility, flexibility, strength and control.” Offering private and small group studio sessions and group mat classes, the 42

comprehensively trained instructors will hone in on your individual needs and goals. “As a Pilates practitioner, it’s my role to help you connect with your body so you can keep doing what you want to do in your daily life for a very long time to come,” Sharon says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to witness the positive impact that Pilates can have on every aspect of people’s lives.” Next year, Sharon is developing Groovolution – Dance for Every Body. These adult dance classes for fun and fitness even cater to older generations (or the youthfully mature) and people with mobility issues. Classes will range from beginner’s tap to jazz, with elements of Latin dance, contemporary, barre and Pilates. BODY REVOLUTION 4/80 WILSTON RD, NEWMARKET P 3356 4722 BODYREVOLUTION.COM.AU

Fire ICE
The answer to a groundbreaking glow or just another Hollywood rumour? Styler, Dinushka Gunasekara, tries the Fire & Ice facial, exclusively at The Skin Lab.
B
esides playing with Transformers and thinking Jason Statham is pretty cool, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and I have another thing in common – we’ve both experienced the revolutionary rejuvenation of a Fire & Ice facial. While she swears by the treatment for a pre-red carpet glow up, I was preparing for a Tuesday evening spent watching The Nanny, and, let me tell you, this is how you want your skin to look for Netflix and chill. The Fire & Ice facial was created by pharmaceutical grade skincare brand, iS Clinical, to resurface your best skin, and is exclusively available in Brisbane at The Skin Lab. If the name is giving you PTSD over Game of Thrones, it’s for good reason – the 45-minute facial is truly magic! It combines two therapeutic masques with massaging techniques using cremes and serums that are exfoliating and highly active, yet has zero downtime and instantaneous results. I was welcomed to the suave space by Tahnee O’Neile who’s been loving the beauty biz since she started in 2003. The pamper began with an Observ 520 skin analysis, which proved 58

beauty truly isn’t just skin deep. The state-ofthe-art tech presents your skin in six different observation modes: daylight, parallel polarised, cross polarised, true UV, simulated woods light, and complexion analysis. If you thought seeing your face in a candid shot was confronting, this is tenfold. I knew my face was oily but the Observ revealed I had the city of Venice hiding beneath my skin, with canals through my T-zone and pools in my cheeks. Tahnee held my hand through it all, and provided me with an in-depth skincare plan, so instead of wallowing in self-pity, I’m now on the attack. The blow was very quickly softened when I was led to the soothing treatment room, with soaring views of the city skyline. Robed up and kicking back, my road to bliss opened with a pressure point massage to escort any stress out the door. My face was cleansed with an iS Clinical cleanser, which is suitable for all skin types, and a steam towel compress warmed my skin up, beginning the ‘fire’ stage of the facial. Next, an eye enzyme masque was applied to turn my eye bags into Prada by rapidly soothing STYLEMAGAZINES.COM.AU

THIS MASQUE MADE ME WANT TO EAT MY FACE WITH ITS EXTRACTS OF GREEN TEA, LIQUORICE, ROSEMARY AND CINNAMON!” and hydrating the area. Then, Tahnee really turned up the heat with the iS Clinical Intensive Resurfacing Masque, which was spread in a thin layer and left on the skin for 5-10 minutes. While the ingredients were very active, they were also completely natural – think sugar cane and apple, plus naturally derived ingredients such as retinol and niacinamide. My face felt very tingly, like tiny dancers were tip toeing around, but it was never unbearable as I was too busy relishing in the facial massage. Both masques were then removed, and my face was double cleansed, before we got icy with the Rejuvenating Masque. Now, we have to take a moment here: this masque made me want to eat my face. The masque had the usual face favourites, like cooling hyaluronic acid and extracts of aloe, but it was also filled with green tea, liquorice, rosemary, peppermint and cinnamon spice.
I smelt delicious! The cooling continued with a cold glass globe massage in a lymphatic sequence, to really enhance the glow. And, if Nirvana wasn’t already on the horizon, the pressure point massage on both my hands and feet certainly did the trick. Once the masque was removed, I was wrapped up in the iS Clinical Hydra Cool Serum, Youth Eye Complex, Pro-Heal Serum and an appropriate moisturiser for my skin type (it was no mystery after the analysis!). The ribbon on top was a dose of Aspect 50+ SPF, and I was presented to the world with brand spanking new skin. And, with that, the Oscar for Best Skin goes to moi! Call time on
MELANOMA
By JASMINE ROLFE
Blowing the whistle on melanoma mythology and pioneering a new social standard in sun safety, Call Time On Melanoma, founded by Lisa Patulny, shares an important message that defies borders.
M
ost of us will remember the seagull telling us to ‘Slip, Slop, Slap’ aka, our parents slicking on a thick layer of SPF and slapping on a legionnaire hat (you know the one, it has a flap at the back – what a time to be alive). So, why is it that when we navigate through our teens and into adulthood, we become complacent with sun safety? So much so, that us Aussies are known for our eternally sun-kissed skin. Cue, Call Time On Melanoma (CTOM) – a sun safety education platform founded by Lisa Patulny, and aimed at giving you the hard facts in little, easy to understand snippets. And while the platform is approachable and bright in personality and branding, the catalyst behind its launch was far more serious. “In 2018, my friend and colleague Natalie Fornasier, was diagnosed with melanoma for the second time in her life, at age 24. In researching melanoma, I was shocked to learn it is the most common cancer in young Australians. I had never before thought of it as a young person’s issue,” Lisa says. “I wanted to find a way to help Natalie and women like her share their important stories, and to get sun safety information out there in a way that was accessible.” Seagulls and sun hats aside, there was an educational gap in the market – one that Lisa was determined to help close. And having since coined the term ‘SPF is my BFF’, she’s done a bloody good job at making sun safety, cool. Just look at the CTOM Instagram and we promise you’ll feel inspired (and maybe a little silly) for not practicing sun safety sooner. Expect first person stories, sunscreen reviews, the hard facts about melanoma, and debunking of sun safety myths. Two of Lisa’s favourite to shut down being, “That it’s possible to tan safely (it isn’t), and that sunscreen causes SO, WITH THIS IN MIND, WHERE DO WE START? skin cancer (it doesn’t).” However, perhaps more alarming are the statistics that show, in black and white, that we need to hear this LISA SHARES HER NON-NEGOTIABLES: message and take action rather than turning a blind eye. • Stash a bottle of sunscreen, sunglasses, and a bucket hat in your handbag “According to the Cancer Council, people aged 25 to 44 (43% or glove box so you’re never caught out. of the population) are the most likely to get sunburnt outside at • Learn how to reapply sunscreen over your makeup – there are plenty of peak times. Rapunzel,
let down your hair We meet the brains behind trusted hair extensions salon, Emilly Hadrill Hair & Extensions. Fed up with her fine hair that wouldn’t grow past her shoulders, Emilly Hadrill was curious to know how hair extensions could give her more confidence. From one appointment, she made the decision to make it her business to show others the transformative power of what a good head of hair can achieve…
QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS Which celebrity would you love to see walk through your doors? Someone local like Erin McNaught. Favourite place to eat in Brisbane? Currently it’s Hellenika at The Calile Hotel. Favourite cocktail order? Can’t go past a margarita! Favourite place to shop in Brisbane? The boutiques of James Street, Fortitude Valley.
One sentence to introduce yourself… A girl who started a business after loving the change that hair extensions gave her. When and where did Emilly Hadrill Hair & Extensions start? I started Emilly Hadrill Hair & Extensions when I was 19, with a small salon based out of my home. Having seen how extensions enhanced my appearance and made me feel more confident, I went through various training courses to learn multiple techniques, and the best practices for applying and maintaining extensions. How has the business grown over this time? I quickly outgrew my home salon, which led me to open my first boutique in Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast. Before long, word got out about my expertise and I moved the business to a larger luxury salon space in Broadbeach. During the success of the Gold Coast salon, I noticed a lot of clients were travelling from Brisbane, so I made the decision to expand into our state’s capital city. In 2014, I opened my first Brisbane salon in Teneriffe, and two years later, moved the business to our larger Fortitude Valley space. Fast forward to now, and I have a salon
in South Yarra in Melbourne and another in Paddington, Sydney. Who are hair extensions ideal for? Anyone wanting to add length or thickness to their natural hair. I’d say they’re not typically ideal for anyone with very short, cropped hair, and those with hair loss conditions should come in for a consultation before having hair extensions applied. What are the main types of hair extensions? There are three main types: tape, weft, and micro bead extensions. How long do they last? The quality of hair will really determine this. We use Remy Hair from J’adore Hair Supplies, which means the cuticles of the hair in the extensions remain in tact. On average, this style lasts between 9-12 months, with maintenance required every 4-6 weeks. What do you love about working with hair extensions? They’re a way to instantly transform your appearance to make you feel more glamorous and feminine. They can be used to create dimension, add volume and thickness, or to completely transform your appearance with a long, lush set of extensions. I love that there are so many options, and it’s so enjoyable to see someone love the way they look once they’ve been applied. What are your hair trend predictions for 2021? Rozalia Russian’s just-below-the-collarbone length is super in, and ultra-long, mermaid hair is on the upward trend! ‘Tis the season to be grateful What a strange year it’s been, yet here we are at the season of parties and presents, rest and relaxation. Amongst the fun and frivolities, it’s easy to go from one thing to another mindlessly. We take things and people for granted, and fail to value how privileged we are. During the silly season, set aside time daily to reflect and list what you are thankful for. It may be a good relationship, adequate food, or a roof over your head. On days when you are stressed or down, review your list. Get in the habit of routinely thanking people for what they do. Expressing thanks to people doing even small things makes a difference to them and you. When people are negative, see that as a sign they need compassion, and look for the best in them. Stay close to those who struggle. Helping them is not only the right thing to do, it has a positive domino effect. As you notice more around you, gratitude is enhanced and it will become positively contagious.
Summer-proof your legs As temperatures soar, people with venous disease can face escalating problems. The heat causes veins to dilate, which can lead to increased swelling and discomfort. Some patients even say that summer makes the skin on their legs become sensitive and their veins more prominent. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help reduce symptoms; something as simple as taking a walk in the cooler evenings will help relieve venous congestion. Swimming and aqua jogging are also highly recommended, as the ‘antigravity’ movements take the pressure off the circulatory system and can reduce throbbing and itchiness often immediately. Compression therapy is another option to consider if you would like to further support your legs. While you may have some concerns wearing them in the heat, they can be easily disguised under a maxi dress, and new European materials means they are much more breathable – they can even be worn in the shower! Luxury, defined
Check yourself
We unconsciously seek the type of luxury we need in a moment and while we shouldn’t allow luxury to define who we are, luxury allows us to envisage ourselves in a better light. So, how do you define luxury? Is it the time it takes for a craftsman to create a masterpiece? Is it the materials used to construct? Is it the location of where it’s made? The above are considered a necessity, however, luxury is defined by the feeling you receive when you wear the garment. It’s about the feeling of significance, the feeling you are presenting your best self, and the feeling of new comfort. I’m lucky as I create a luxury brand, so I see the effect of luxury every day; the feeling of putting on a well-made shirt in beautiful fabric or a jacket that fits like it should. Try feeling your way to luxury.
Did you know Queensland has the highest incidence of skin cancer in the world? I’ve often had patients come see me for an aesthetic treatment and I’ve gone on to find a skin cancer as part of their assessment. A skin cancer can look like a changing mole, a dark spot, a sore that won’t heal, or a lesion that stings or bleeds after a shower. Most skin cancers are treatable if they are detected early, so a skin check with your GP, dermatologist, or here at The Skin Lab is a good place to start. Not all require surgery, and some can be treated with topical creams or light therapy. Before it gets to that stage, remember the most important thing you can do to protect your skin – slip, slop, slap! My number one tip is to find things you like using. I use a non-greasy, lightweight 50+ sunscreen from Aspect, a gorgeous wide brim hat my daughters bought me, and a simple beach kaftan. If you like it, you’ll use it. HOME
MY ROOM After four years renovating her beautiful 100-year-old home in Brookfield, Catherine Slatter’s light-filled Queenslander, This Old House, is a hidden oasis in the suburbs.
A product developer during the nine to five and design enthusiast on weekends, Catherine was born into a house flipping family – making renovating and re-designing a passionate (and sometimes expensive) hobby. So, it’s not hard to see why her thoughtfully designed bedroom is one of her favourite rooms in the house. What makes this room your favourite space? The calmness and feel of the room. Facing north, it never gets too hot or too cold – it has old French doors onto the verandah and we converted an old stairwell into a gracious entry via a big archway. Somehow, those things together really give it a retreat feel. What inspiration went into the design and styling? I wanted to give the space a nod to its 100-year-old past, but also feel like it’s still contemporary and fresh. So, the archway and VJ walls did the job of looking at the past, and then the soft muted colour scheme, rug textures, and additional window light brought it into this century, whilst still remaining calm, cosy and inviting. What are some special design pieces you love? The archway above all, then the French doors and the VJ walls – they all epitomise the classic Queenslander we love. We updated the timber floors to be a lighter blonde and I really do like this addition to make the home feel fresh without the orange pine that can appear in some Queenslander homes.

Can you name a favourite memory in this room? It’s the place everyone gets to celebrate their birthday first thing in the morning, by clambering onto the bed, dogs and all! There is also the first memory of when we saw the place, and I thought, “Oh dear, this is not a great space!” The door went straight onto the lounge room and everyone could have a good old look in. Renovating has been a part of your life for many years – what advice would you give to others wanting to renovate their dream home? If you can, always move into a home before you renovate. What you think works initially, may not work after you have lived there. Plan, plan and plan some more. The devil is in the detail, so plan the big stuff, but really magnify and think about the small things, too. Light placements for night-time feels are important, as well as the wall colour at night – not just in the day – and longevity of materials. Try to go timeless instead of fashionable, or you will want to pull those tiles out in five years’ time when they have dated (just consider the environmental impact of that, too). Steer clear of trends that have things like names of countries and places before the product. Remember we are in Australia so embrace the Australian style – its got way more chance of going the distance. Photography @CASA_MORGAN

Unique, bold, handmade.
