This time of year, is a firm favourite of mine. That Autumnal wind-swept feeling, cosier nights, wardrobe spruce up, it’s safe to say autumn is here.

We welcome you then to our autumn issue with our favourite Welsh duo gracing our cover. Founders of the incredible Spectrum Collections, Sophie & Hannah Pycroft, or as I like to call them: “The Spectrum Sisters,” have truly taken the world by storm. Their newest brush collection, Sculpt By Spectrum, has seen them make waves Stateside. It was an honour to get more familiar with them both, and for them to share their journey so far (P9).

We have filled this issue with all the things you love, including our newest edition to the magazine our Wedding Guide. Recognising more people were preparing for weddings, especially after lockdown, our guide ensures brides and grooms to be, have everything they need, to make the best day possible. You can read the full guide (P39)

For those wanting to take in history, Cardiff Museum has a fantastic exhibition available: ‘Reframing Picton’ is a powerful portrayal of changing the narrative, an artistic interpretation of trauma, aimed at telling the real stories behind slave trade atrocities, of which Thomas Picton played an integral role. It was a pleasure to be invited to the unveiling of this, you can read the full feature (P38).

Missed our Summer Brunch Fest? Take a look at all our pictures in our ‘Social Butterflies’ section (P84) A big thank you to our sponsors from the event: My Car Journey, Holm House Hotel and Blush Glow Bar.

With so much content and style! We hope you enjoy reading this as much as we enjoyed putting it together. Thanks for picking us up x

The Emotional

Weight of Jewellery

If you could only save one possession from a burning house, what would it be?

We’ve all heard the quick-fire question, asked to put you on the spot and designed to invite a thoughtful pause and careful consideration. However, the answer can be pretty straightforward. It is not objects of great monetary value or practical nature, often it is a grandmother’s engagement ring, a pendant to mark the birth of a child or a bracelet set with family stones; we save items that have sentimental meaning and emotional value. Luxury jewellers, Laings, have been part of a countless number of stories that jewellery pieces tell. They understand that precious pieces are more than aesthetic adornment and come with their own tales to tell, commemorating memories, recognising achievements, celebrating birthdays and anniversaries or as simple tokens of love. “For me, the best part of working with jewellery every day is the sentiment” notes Debbie McKernan, Laings Group Visual Merchandiser and Client Relationship Executive. “From your first baby bangle and 18th birthday presents, through to engagement rings, anniversary presents and even inheriting special heirloom pieces from family.” Our personal collections of jewellery may be small but can be magical, and our most treasured possessions are often found in jewellery boxes. A ring can conjure the loving whispers of a grandmother and a pendant can give you the power to walk a little taller as it gives you the confidence of previous achievements. These pieces can make you feel empowered when you are wearing them, giving you either a boost of self-confidence or a feeling of comfort and security. There is value in what your jewellery symbolises that goes beyond sartorial point-scoring. The power of jewellery is nothing new though and the earliest

people wore shells, stones and bones to protect them from danger or bestow luck on their next hunt, whilst the Ancient Greeks gave jewellery as gifts to ward off the ‘evil eye’. It was in 1477 that the first engagement ring was given. Austrian aristocrat, Archduke Maximillan, proposed to Mary of Burgundy with a ring that featured diamonds in the shape of the letter ‘M’. In a similar way today, we mark our achievements with these emotional talismans and give them as gifts for good luck or symbols of commitment.

Throughout the centuries and across cultures, the sentimental worth of jewellery has far surpassed monetary and material value, with their beauty lying in the tales that they tell. Jewellery has its own reason and resonance, sharing secret stories that only the wearer has the key to. They are pieces that have been bought to celebrate a moment, mark an occasion or have been handed down through the generations as pieces to cherish. They have the power to transport you to memories, times gone by, and thoughts of the people you love. They remind us of promises, special occasions and personal milestones. Each piece can tell the story of your life and is something that you can carry everywhere with you, becoming intrinsically woven into the tapestry of our lives. The beautiful pieces of jewellery found at Laings have the power to combine the past and the future. Their strength lies in the ability to transcend time, moving through the years and acting as a time capsule of memories, always leaving space for the next chapter as they’re passed down generations.

Debbie continued: “A special jewellery purchase is an investment and one that has emotional implications. It is my job to ensure that this important purchase is not only right for the customers but also to ensure that their experience with Laings is part of the memories carried by the piece, we become part of their story. There is nothing more rewarding than being part of someone’s journey and this is often a journey that lasts for generations to come.”

Laings host an exquisite collection of fine jewellery, engagement rings and luxury watches, curated to share landmark moments in life, with each piece expertly selected for the emotions that they provoke. For generations, they have shared with clients the special moments that beautiful jewellery symbolizes helping them to find luxurious items to carry memories for years to come. Visit Laings and allow the expert team to help you to find the perfect piece for the chapters of your life.

AND THEY ARE STARTED FROM THE GARAGE DEFINITELY
HERE!

Our Welsh entrepreneurial sisters Sophie & Hannah Pycroft have not only taken the beauty industry by storm but are now making waves stateside with their new brush collection ‘Sculpt by Spectrum’ a collaboration with leading makeup artist Ash K Holm. As a Barry girl myself, the heights of success that Sophie and Hannah have reached, always gives me that ‘Go on girls’ attitude. Two sisters, who started a brand in their garage and who have recently seen their products stocked in Harrods, are by far Wales’ most successful female entrepreneurs.

What is it about these two unassuming females that have catapulted them through that glass ceiling and beyond? They remain down to earth, humble, likeable, and so very stylish. Their savvy business acumen and go-getting approach has seen them win countless beauty awards with legions of fans, from Barry to Beverly Hills. Style of the city wanted to find out the secret to their incredible success and of course get the real low-down on Sculpt by Spectrum.

We’re accidental entrepreneurs, we didn’t have a head start, we were always driven by a desire to work creatively as that’s what our passion is, that translated into a product that we managed to communicate and market really successfully, thankfully that part came fairly naturally, and the tough bit has been scale and growth. That’s been our steep learning curve and every day is a school day!

What challenges have you faced during your journey?

Managing people was a struggle initially, but now the team work independently. Our style of management is based on trust and giving people the opportunity to shine and progress. The biggest challenge is the global market, how to take a small beauty product that started in a garage with very humble beginnings, to the heights of a household beauty brand.

Cashflow is always our struggle, we are 100% independent, so every risk we take is entirely on our shoulders but that’s also the reason we’ve been able to steer the business in exactly the direction that we want it to grow, and why we believe we’re so unique in our offering, it really comes from our own personal decisions.

What are your core values as a business? Have they altered over the course of your time trading?

We’re Our core values we are very pleased to say have remained the same. They are the guiding principles of the brand and reasons why our customers love and trust our products. Firstly, every item we create is both vegan and cruelty free, we firmly believe that animals don’t have to be harmed in the pursuit of beauty. Secondly, we are always striving to deliver the highest quality possible for the best price we can offer. We often put the product integrity before our bottom line, if our margin has to take a hit for us to really achieve

the best possible result, then we will take the hit! Finally, we are continually working improving our sustainability credentials, by reducing packaging, opting for less toxic materials, fewer processes, a more streamlined supply chain, however we can improve we do so. We call this process ‘attainable sustainable’ meaning if we can do it, we will.

What has running this business taught you?

That you shouldn’t start a business if you want to get rich quick, and you also should never attempt to build a brand that you don’t live and breathe, it must feel personal, you need to embody your brand for it to be authentic.

Audiences love authenticity and you can’t make that up.

Think about mentors that you had in your life. What role did they play? Why were they important to you?

We didn’t have business mentors until very late in the day, maybe year 6, and at

10 Style of the city
Why did you decide to become an entrepreneur? What inspired you to start your business?
COVER FEATURE

that point it wasn’t smooth sailing so it was to try and steer us out of trouble rather than guide us towards good decisions. Now thankfully we have some guidance that helps us make informed decisions and it’s making a lot of difference to the future of the brand which is very exciting. We’ve had inspirations rather than mentors, our family have always inspired us, they’ve never run successful companies, but they’ve always supported each other, had integrity and worked really hard. We try to ensure we’d never do anything that would disappoint them.

How have you dealt with competitors?

What competitors?! We stay true to our own vision and do what feels right for us, we never look at what other brands are doing in the space. We don’t say that to sound arrogant, but if you look around too much you’re not looking forward and we’re always thinking ahead.

If you could give a younger person advice, what would it be?

Stay consistent, trust your gut and for gods sake take a break, you’ll need it.

What was the first moment you felt successful?

What was the most important milestone for you on the way to success? We always think the big moment for us was when our partnership with Disney became official, for such a small business at the time to have the support and approval from a global brand was game changing. We’ve just renewed our partnership to continue into 2024 and we have big plans, 6 years of working with Disney has taught us a lot and we’re continually inspired.

Their new brush collaboration has taken their brand to new heights, as they put it:

“We've been working on the collection since 2019 which feels like an age ago, when we first met Ash on the rooftop of The West Hollywood Edition and now finally everything has launched and we couldn't be happier with the brushes and what we've achieved as a team.”

And what of the brushes?

“Everything about this brush set is new, every brush shape, the packaging, the hair type and even the name, Sculpt by Spectrum. The best bit is we know you're going to love them, the latest in technology - the hair is a new technically advanced version of vegan materials - combined with our highest quality yet and when we say these tools have been tested to the extreme on the faces of some of the most watched people on the planet, you KNOW they have to be the best!”

How has the reaction been to the brushes so far?

The reaction on social has to be one of the biggest we've ever had, and we're so grateful to everyone for all the love. It really is surreal to think that two sisters from Barry have created a product that is now in some very famous hands, and the brushes have been used to create some of the most iconic makeup looks by Ash.”

New Beginnings

Kiti Cymru is proud to be an independent boutique set in the leafy suburb of Cardiff’s Pontcanna.

Gwenno, owner and fashionista, opened the doors of the original Kiti in 2015 and has recently launched a new store on Pontcanna Street. From then until now, she has remained at the heart of the Cardiff fashion scene. Gwenno said “My motivation for establishing Kiti came from spending a lot of time (and money!) in London and being inspired by the delectable suburban boutiques - an experience that I decided to bring home with me down the M4.” Soon, Gwenno had created a unique fashion haven stocking a mix of the finest contemporary European and global labels, including Ba&sh, Essentiel Antwerp, Stine Goya, Stella Nova and many, many more. She prides herself on being the only stockist in Wales of some brands such as Anine Bing, Ganni and Unselfish Lover, and supporting sustainable and ethical brands.

Kiti has gained a legion of admirers – it was named in the Telegraph’s top 50 independent boutiques in the UK for 4 consecutive years, featured in Grazia, in Style magazine of The Sunday Times, and shortlisted for the top independent boutiques in the UK by Drapers. Even lockdown didn’t stop Gwenno from bringing joy to her customers and eager Instagram followers. “I had a shop full of spring/summer collection, but no one was able to visit in person” said Gwenno “So I got creative, posting daily videos and images of me modelling the beautiful clothes. I was a one-woman, virtual fashion show!” Such was the clamour

for her outfits, she launched a website which attracted new fans, followers and Kiti devotees from across the UK, and beyond! Then with lockdown lifting, time for the next adventurerelocating to a bigger store!

The beginning of September 2022 saw Gwenno open the doors of this new shop, three times the size of the original Kiti, which includes even more of her customers’ favourites, as well as other, new and exciting, exclusive brands such as Farm Rio, Unselfish Lover, Celia B and Kitri Studio. One of Gwenno’s core aims is to work with and champion other women in business. “The new Kiti was co-designed with Conspicuous Collector’s talented Lisa Gates to give it its unique and vibrant style, whilst the opening weekend’s floral display was provided by the brilliant Rhian Rees from Wild.and.Fabulous.Flowers whose bespoke bouquets are available to purchase between Thursdays and Saturdays.” Having survived the pandemic and store move, Gwenno remains as passionate as ever - “People often ask me what the best bits of my job are.

There are so many – buying all over Europe and sourcing new and exciting brands, dressing and giving style tips to customers and giving them a unique shopping experience, working with and following influencers and other boutiques, hosting real and virtual fashion shows and supporting and making women feel special!”

ELECTRIC The Future Is

Here’s what you need to know about the benefits of going electric.

FHEV = Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle

FHEVs run on traditional fuel (like petrol or diesel) and an electric motor that uses energy stored in a battery.

HEV drivers charge their batteries via, energy converted into electrical power when the drive breaks to slow the vehicle, known as regenerative braking.

PHEV = Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle

A Plug-in hybrid uses a battery to power an electric motor, and fuel to power a traditional engine.

PHEV batteries are charged using a wall outlet or charging equipment, fuel, or through regenerative braking.

Kuga

Beautifully designed, remarkably efficient, effortlessly capable. Kuga Plug-in Hybrid offers a clean, quiet approach to SUV driving*, with an electric-only range of up to 28 – 39 miles.

BENEFITS OF GOING ELECTRIC

Drive with confidence. You aren’t contributing to emissions. Fewer trips to the pumps. Charge at home and only on the longest journeys. Running costs will likely be cheaper as EVs have fewer moving parts that an engine. This means fewer maintenance requirements.

FORDTHORNE

MHEV = Mild Hybrid Electronic Vehicle

MHEVs blends a traditional engine and an electric motor. Using the battery reduces fuel consumption but you have the traditional fuelling option on hand if needed.

Puma, Focus and Fiesta

Ecoboost is Ford MHEV technology (available in the Puma, Focus and Fiesta) which boasts 20% faster acceleration and 10% better fuel economy.

CHARGING FACTS

Charging at home is more cost effective than at a charging station. Depending on the vehicle and if you have a driveway or garage at home, consider getting a wallbox charging point installed.

Charging points range from £80-£2,000 depending on the speed the vehicle charges, if you need to charge more than one vehicle at a time, whether you’d like to control charging from your smartphone (smart chargers) and the design and quality of the unit. Check that your preferred vehicle is compatible with a super fast charger.

Can I plug it into mains

How much does

Charging at home cost

vary by make and model (this

EV = Electronic Vehicle

EVs have an electric motor that is fully powered by batteries.

Mach–E

Ford’s first all-electric SUV. Beautifully sculpted design, state-of the-art technologies, and a maximum electric driving range of up to 280-379 miles (WLTP test results). For this issue we thought we’d do a little bit of reflecting, Autumn seems to slip away as that in-between time from Summer into Winter, it’s here then all of a sudden it’s gone. Probably because everyone’s so busy with September being a re-set month and then we’re full steam ahead for Christmas. When people ask us the question ‘how old is Spectrum’ and we say its over 8 years old, we usually get the response ‘oh wow that’s not long for what you’ve done’, which always makes us think about how the last 8 years has gone so fast, it feels like yesterday we were still in the garage, and we definitely miss those days still, it’s a huge part of our brand history and the starting point of the Spectrum story. During Autumn collectively we’re definitely ready for some more cozy down time, wardrobe updates (jumpers and boots are our favourites! Even though the nights are getting longer, we always feel you can add some high-octane hughes, there’s no need for the season to be too dark, we’re always fans of turning up the brightness as the temperature drops.

Of course it’s not a new season without some fresh beauty products too, we’re reaching for our bronzer to warm up our skin after losing some of our Summer tan, and of course our glowful primer helps to perk up skin which has dulled in

One for the History BEAUTY BOOKS

the cooler temperatures. As well as reminiscing on the last 8 years, we always look forward to ‘what’s next’ we tend to work 6-12 months in advance, so yes we are currently planning next Christmas. A lot of you will know we work with Disney and we love nothing more than creating elaborate, creative collections that have that ‘magic’ associated with the stories and the characters, nostalgia has a huge part to play when we’re designing our launches. This Autumn/Winter our most fantastical launch will be Cinderella, where we celebrate themes of Midnight and also Transformation, both signifying that elusive passing of time that we all feel at the end of each day and particularly in Autumn and Winter as the days are shorter, what we want ultimately is to make the most of every minute this season. All the Skin Feels

The Biotech Elemis facial is something I’ve been meaning to try for a while. I’m not sure if it’s mum guilt, busyness, or both that has kept me from taking the plunge. Like all busy mum’s I tend to use the evening’s bath soak as my ‘self-care’ routine. A much needed ‘switch up’ was in order. With some intrigue and a face that totally needed invigoration, I headed to one of my favourite stops at The Parkgate. It’s amazing how after only one year this beautiful hotel has become one of the top spots to visit in the capital. Heading to the spa with inviting smells of aromatherapy, you could be forgiven to feel like you’ve departed from the other world, this new one is about ‘me time.’ And with bath robe and slippers in tow, I was excited to see how this facial worked.

The facial itself is a cocktail of concentrated serums plus a 5-in-1 facial machine that offers a combination of ultrasonic, micro-current, oxygen infusion and light therapy. Sounds technical but the experience couldn’t be further from. As you lay on the cosy beauty bed, it feels like your skin is getting a deep treatment. All those stress lines, dry skin, dead skin, all that bad stuff is being removed. The great thing about this facial, is that micro-currents emit extremely low voltage which mirror your own body’s electrical currents on a cellular level to repair damaged skin and help stimulate collagen. Science aside the feeling was like a fresh awakening, all the skin feels. This non-invasive skin miracle, as I like to call it truly felt amazing. Like an MOT for the skin and some much-needed downtime for me. As a fan of Elemis, you will find at the spa a plethora of Elemis skin products with staff only happy to help on products best suited for you. My skin therapist was helpful and knowledgeable as she walked me through each part of the facial. I would highly recommend this treatment, with the results being instantaneous. My skin felt tighter, smoother and my dark circles seemed to have vanished. Now a firm believer of investing in your skin, biotech is a new firm favourite.

Teaching the Importance of Diversity Through Haircare

Joy Djadi is on a mission to use her hair skills to help empower and educate students on afro hair care.

As surprising as it may seem, afro haircare teaching is not mandatory. This means that anyone with afro hair could quite easily be turned away from hair salons, due to staff not being trained in that sector.

Afro Hair Academy Wales is the first of its kind, founder Joy Djadi recognised a need for afro hair training services in Wales and has used her skills to tackle an issue, in turn helping many of her students fulfil their ambitions of having all the skills they need to work in their desired field of haircare.

Born in Cardiff, it seemed like the perfect place to get the training off the ground. After much market research, Joy realised not one educational college offered any training qualifications in Afro or textured hair. As Joy states: “Cardiff has developed extensively over the years; we have a stunning city with so many different cultures, but we still lack diversity in covering Afro and multi textured hair within the educational curriculum. Developing

the Afro Hair Academy Wales has taken some time due to lockdown. It is a fantastic extension of my professional and personal achievement.”

Hair achievements is something Joy is no stranger to. Starting her journey into Further Education and Training over 30 years ago, Studying hairdressing with City & Guilds at Colchester Avenue College in Cardiff. Joy opened her first hairdressing salon known then as Knotty Roots where the business provided specialist services in Afro and curly hair.

Afro Hair Academy Wales is unique in its field, “We offer what other training providers in Cardiff are unable to offer which is unique. I call it ‘bridging that gap’ and offer vocational training and qualifications combined with hairdressing. Our courses cover Caucasian, Afro and Multi textured hair.” This is an amazing turnaround for Cardiff and has been welcomed by other training providers. As an associate with Isa training group

together Afro Hair Academy Wales will offer the combined hairdressing apprenticeship program, also offering fast track level 2 combined courses, commercial courses, where professionals are able to update their skills and gain experience of working with different hair types and textures. The academy will also offer intensive three-day training for professional makeup artists.

As Joy puts it, “Our sole aim is to build cohesive working relationships with other training providers, support inclusion and embed diversity in hairdressing training in Cardiff.

AFRO HAIR ACADEMY WALES

Afro Hair Academy Wales

Iwas 17 when I had my hair relaxed for the first time.

Determined to loosen my curl texture, I remember vividly heading to Cardiff’s Clare Road and waiting patiently, whilst my afro hair locks would be transformed with a chemical so harsh, if it got into your eyes, you’re likely to be blinded, and let’s not even talk about the skin damage it can do if left on too long.

I wasn’t educated enough about my hair texture, growing up in Barry, countless times being told: “We don’t do afro hair sorry,” or the usual: “Sorry nobody is trained in afro hair here.” The door would literally be closed, as I would endlessly flatten my hair down with cheap hair gel, and my confidence knocked as I would aim for the perfect straight tresses for fear of being ridiculed. Rather than go on a tangent about the names directed at my hair, a victim I am not! Suffice to say ‘Don King’ (as in the boxing promoter) and ‘Pineapple head’ were some of the names directed. I can laugh about it now, I mean Don Kings hair was cool, but back then I felt constantly ashamed of my big afro curls, thanks to the names they were called.

Rewind some 20 years later, and I couldn’t be happier to see a hair brand, Afro Hair Academy Wales, dedicated in educating aspiring hairdressers on afro hair care, in the heart of our Welsh capital. These days I often wear my hair in its natural curly state, and occasionally get it blowed out straight,

but unlike back then, I avoid chemical relaxers like the plague! Understanding the right products and treatments is key, and that’s how Afro Hair Academy Wales will help so many.

It was a sunny afternoon as I dashed in greeted by the lovely Joy Djadi, founder and hairdresser in chief. The academy is warm and inviting, Joy is the consummate professional, with a knowing smile, almost as if she understands the hair journey I have been on.

A deep conditioning treatment ensued, basking in the wonderful hair massage and Joy’s knowledge of my hair type whilst soaking in the conditioning oils. After a wonderful blow dry, I explained I hadn’t relaxed my hair in years, Joys reassuring: “You don’t need to, your hair is lovely.”

All those years of painstaking chemical straightening products felt a world away. It was lovely being surrounded by an afro hair teacher who specialises in only getting the best from our tresses.

So, what is my verdict? Afro Hair Academy Wales is the spot we have been wanting for and needing, I will definitely return.

Josh Lee Hair, has unveiled a stylish new look to coincide with their 4th anniversary, firmly cementing the salons position as one of the leading in the city. Founded by Josh Lee in November 2018 an award-winning hair stylist and national brand ambassador for ELEVEN Australia. The salon quickly became renowned for offering a high-quality experience, using the finest in hair care products, whilst ensuring the price points remained accessible. The winning formula resulted in record breaking demand when Josh Lee Hair re-emerged from the pandemic.

Founder Josh said: “When I launched the salon, I was 27 years old with a vast client base but no actual experience in running a business - I was pretty much winging it. Fast forward 4 years and a few lockdowns later, Josh Lee Hair is busier than ever. My amazing salon manager, Hannah, has been with me on the entire journey and in addition we now employ two stylists and an apprentice. We needed more space, more chairs, and a fresh new look to ensure we continued to thrive and meet the demand. We have knocked through into the spare room and completely re-designed the space, there are now more stations to accommodate our clients and to elevate the experience even further we’ve added a fabulous mini bar! We are super pleased with the transformation and the clients seem to love it too.”

Cosmetic Surgery: Why stay in the UK

St Joseph’s Hospital, renowned for its leading cosmetic surgery in Wales, are on a mission to educate and inform prospective cosmetic surgery clients on the importance of choosing the right and best solutions for them.

1. Think about the CHANGE you want to see. Do your research. Find out all you can about the treatment you want. Be precise as to the change you hope to see and the reasons why.

2. CHECK OUT potential surgeons. Make sure that you find a surgeon that has the right qualifications and is on the appropriate specialist register with the GMC. Find out about their experience of the procedure you are considering and make sure you meet them before you commit to having something done.

3.Have a thorough CONSULTATION. Your surgeon will discuss and clarify the treatment options with you and then plan your treatment. Make sure you know the risks involved and feel comfortable with the surgeon who will be carrying out your surgery.

We spoke to Mr Ahmed Emam, Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at St Joseph’s Hospital, about the well documented rise in the number of patients travelling abroad to have cosmetic surgery.

Mr Emam states, “there are a number of factors that should be considered before a patient decides to have cosmetic surgery in the UK or going aboard.” The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (BAPRAS) advise there are 5 C’s that should be considered:

Mr Emam believes the 5 C’s are an important part of cosmetic procedures to ensure that patients safety is maintained and that high quality care and clinical excellence is provided.

4.COOL off before you commit. You need to be confident about your decision to have cosmetic surgery. After your initial consultation, give yourself some time to decide that you want the surgery and to make sure you feel at ease with the surgeon who will be treating you. Don’t commit to surgery if you have any doubts that either the procedure, or the surgeon is the right one for you. Often your surgeon will advise a second consultation before the final decisions are made.

5.CARE about your aftercare. Aftercare can be just as important as the surgery itself, so make sure you know who to contact and how you will be looked after, especially if there are any complications or problems following your surgery or treatment.

36 Style of the city
HAIR & BEAUTY

“When having surgery of any kind, the recovery is always a key part to the long-term quality of treatment. Having cosmetic surgery aboard can mean that you are unable to recover fully before having to travel back to your hotel or flying home.”. In the UK, you are surrounded by friends, family and nursing teams who are on hand to care for you and ensure you remain comfortable. Mr Emam comments, “Undergoing surgery in the UK can provide you with a more relaxed and comfortable experience.”

Cosmetic surgery, like that of all procedures, has its level of risks that may occur, however these are somewhat heightened when travelling aboard for treatment. There is an increased risk after surgery of Venous and Pulmonary Thrombosis (blood clots in the leg veins and lungs) which can be fatal.

Travelling aboard can mean that your risk is increased due to flying.

If complications were to occur, you will need to have knowledge of what your consultants’ insurance covers and have access to them for any further treatment, if required. Should there be any clinical issues that require further treatment in the UK following a procedure aboard, this can be very hard for another surgeon to treat due to the unknown techniques that were performed.

Mr Emam explained that the tempting cost of cosmetic procedures aboard can be inviting, however there are risks

that should be considered at every stage. He commented “there are many skilled and qualified surgeons all over the world, however it is difficult for certified bodies in the UK to assess the credentials of a surgeon working outside of the UK. This puts the patient at risk of having surgery with an unqualified surgeon, unknowingly.”

Another concern that Mr Emam highlighted is that occasionally there can be mislabelling of cosmetic surgery as a “holiday package”. Mr Emam commented, “Cosmetic surgery is a serious procedure and should not be considered as a ‘holiday’. Also, planning a holiday immediately after your surgery is not recommended as you will not be able to carry on your normal activities. Patients should rest and be considerate to themselves, to allow for the healing process to begin and reduce the risk of complications.”

Mr Emam comments, “there are many considerations that should be had when planning cosmetic surgery and talking to a qualified professional is essential”.

Mr Emam is based at St Joseph’s Hospital, Newport. To book a consultation please call 01633 836660 or email hello@stjosephshospital.co.uk. (Ref: www.bapras.org.uk)

Bridal Tips & Tricks from GIA Makeup Artist

Looking to have a luxurious glow-up for your big day? Do you want a makeup artist that is ready to go above and beyond to make you feel amazing and confident? Look no further because I am on a mission to make every client look and feel fabulous! Being in the makeup business for over 7 years, I know all the prep-work for you wedding day can get quite stressful and frustrating, especially the little things -- the dress, the hair, the makeup… so I prepared a quick cheat sheet to help you prepare before your big day.

You can book your trial or contact me for more information here: Mobile:

Email: dollsyndromebygia@gmail.com Instagram: @geoxxii

1. Choose a lipstick you feel comfortable wearing Why is this important? Well, the lipstick is the first thing to go, especially after having a meal and a few drinks. Having a lipstick you like on hand to reapply throughout the night could be life saving

2.Have a makeup trial

It goes without saying that the makeup you are wearing on your wedding day has to look perfect and be suited for your taste. Booking a makeup trial is vital to ensure you are happy and confident with the end result.

3.Make sure you have a few products on hand during the day

Besides the lipstick, another important item to keep on hand is blotting paper. I always leave my brides with a few blotting papers to keep the shine at bay to make sure all the pictures taken look perfect.

4.Take care of your skin

You should have a skin-care routine in place a few months before the wedding. Something as simple as a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser and an SPF 50 (yes, even during winter!) can transform you skin in just a few weeks.

*Try avoiding harsh skin treatments a few weeks before your wedding day to ensure your skin doesn’t have a bad reaction.

5. Know what you want

It would be really helpful for both of you and the makeup artist if you had a rough idea of what you would want (or even better – what you don’t want). Bringing inspiration pictures in could make the trial go so much smoother because your definition of a “smokey eye” can be much different from the artist’s definition. Lastly, don’t be shy to show us the hairstyle and outfit you’ll be going for, it will help us build a cohesive vision.

6. Be smart when you spray-tan

If you naturally have a lighter skin tone, don’t try to spray tan 5 shades darker in one go hoping for a good result. Instead, you should gradually self-tan with a medium shade, using it every 2 days for 1 week prior to your wedding day, that way you will build a beautiful tan without looking orange and splotchy.

Wedding columnist Paula Burns is a multi award-winning wedding planner and venue stylist, as well as a business mentor. Specialising in personalised service, stemming from over 20 years of corporate experience, Paula's creative flare has ensured she continues to be a trusted and sought-after wedding planner.

What now? Breathe...

Award winning Wedding Planner and venue stylist Paula Burns, helps you to take the anxiety out of your planning

Welcome to my brand new column where my aim is to get you through the whole wedding planning experience in a way that brings you joy, not angst. First of all, congratulations! You're planning a wedding! Chances are you are feeling excited, nervous and overwhelmed all rolled into one. That's natural. But I'm sure that what you are also feeling is the need to actually do something. You may even have lots of voices around you offering advice and pressuring you to get things moving. My advice to you? Don't do anything right now. Take some time to sit with that exciting feeling – it feels good right? But just how long should you wait? The pace of how you plan is a very personal thing, based on how soon you want to tie the knot. There is most definitely an order of things; but only once you are clear about the type of day you want to create. And that simply is the key to a stress free (or at least a less stressed!) wedding. Trust me. You will be very thankful for well laid foundations when you are weeks away from your wedding day. So first things first. Here are my top tips on laying strong wedding planning foundations:

Connect with your emotions Get clear on what's important to you and your other half, family sentiments and things that make you happy. Everyone's personality is different and one size certainly does not fit all. Once you get caught up in the glitz of planning it's easy to lose your way and before you know it, you can be creating a day that doesn't reflect you at all.

Create a Vision Blue Print

love a blue print! I think it the planner in me. The Vision Blue Print is the place where you start to imagine what your day will look and feel like. Here you can make your imagination run wild. Think about your type of venue, the décor, the food, the personal touches like your wedding stationery, cake, flowers and of course your style of wedding dress. Don't forget to also make a note of the activities / entertainment you would like to place during your day

Identify your vision deal breakers

Vision Deal Breakers are the things you have identified in the previous steps, that you will not compromise on. If you know what they are, you are less likely to be dragged into wedding oblivion filled with someone else's dreams. Don't get me wrong. Your feelings may change on these things later on, but right now, you can't see your day without them and that means you might even be prepared to pay a little bit more over the odds.

And don't forget to set that budget. Large or small, you need to connect with it and make it your friend.

Laying the foundations is one of the most exciting parts of planning with my clients, because I know the value of not rushing this stage. I share so much more about this in my Ultimate Guide to Starting your Wedding Plans which you can download from the shop on my web site www.paulaburns.net

Until next time, enjoy your planning and...don't forget to breathe x www.paulaburns.net @paulaburnseventsandmentoring Tel: 07830 315367 info@paulaburns.net

Unique Bespoke Engagement Rings with You in Mind

Here at Northern Star Bespoke Jewellery, we produce beautiful jewellery in accordance with your budget, no matter how extravagant or modest. Using state of the art technology together with traditional jewellery making techniques, we will create a series of 3D computer generated images of your design. According to your specifications these can be fine-tuned and produced, allowing you to become involved in creating your individual and unique piece of jewellery. From the design and creation process through to building and maintaining lasting relationships with our customers, our jewellery is about you. Your input is our driving force and what makes the process unique, which is why we stand out from the rest.

Designing your dream ring for that someone special can be difficult but we work with you each step of the way to ensure we achieve your personal requirements. We will source a selection of gemstones in keeping with your specific requirements and talk you through all your options regarding your design. Once you have selected the stones, we will begin to work together on designing your item of jewellery. The next stage is to grow a custom-made 3D wax model of your design, for you to try on. This is a process which leave no room for surprise or error. We use a ‘Lost Casting Process’ to cast your design. The 3D wax model is placed in a plaster cast which is put into a furnace. The wax melts out of the cast with the heat, leaving a void. The precious metal of your choice is melted and fired into the plaster cast within a vacuum chamber, which fills the void that the wax left behind. And behold, your item of jewellery is cast. The item of jewellery is finished at the bench. Finally, the stones (if any) are set. The finished jewellery is then sent to the Assay Office to be officially hallmarked.

Our wedding bands comes in a variety of styles and shapes, as well as your preferred metal choice. We can offer a range of classic plain bands, sparkling diamond set bands

or shaped bands. We can take into consideration existing rings and ensure that the wedding ring sits intimately beside them, using our modern, computer assisted technology. Let us help you find the perfect symbol of your eternal love. Our service also includes a more personal option to design and create new jewellery from existing jewellery that you may own or have inherited. We can melt-down gold or re-use gemstones, therein keeping the sentiment of the item but updating the style to something you want to wear.

All pieces of jewellery are available in Rose Gold, White Gold, Yellow Gold and Platinum.

For the last few years so many of us have only been able to dream about jetting off somewhere with many family holidays being postponed or cancelled. Weddings had to be rearranged along with the subsequent honeymoon plans. Now finally international travel is getting back to normal, and many destinations are firmly back on the table. Why not start travelling again, fulfilling dreams and bucket lists?

As a luxury travel concierge this is my area of expertise and here are some details of the top requests I’m currently getting from clients.

Disneyland whether that is in Paris, Florida, California or HK

People feel their families have missed out on a lot of fun over the last few years so especially with the 50th anniversary celebrations in 2022 too Disney is the top choice for families.

Lapland to visit Santa Claus

Next up has to be a trip to meet the big man himself in Finnish Lapland and with most dates for November/December 2022 fully booked my advice for you would be to consider a February 2023 visit as the odds of seeing the Northern Lights are greatly increased.

Valentine’s break in a glass igloo anyone?

A Safari holiday to see the big five

So many of us enjoyed watching the David Attenborough programmes over lockdown and now a trip to the zoo just isn’t good enough we want to see these amazing creatures in their own habitats while we still can. Twin centre stays that incorporate a safari element are really popular. Fancy wine tasting in Stellenbosch and relaxation on a gorgeous beach combined with a safari?

The Maldives or Bali for a once in a lifetime holiday either with or without the kids

Surprisingly I have had lots of families take holidays to the Maldives that was once the preserve of honeymooners and it is no surprise when some island resorts have amazing kids clubs now so why not head there with the entire family?

Epic tour adventures arranged perhaps to celebrate a milestone birthday, honeymoon or anniversary. Recent examples include a luxury train tour of Switzerland on the Glacier Express. An Icelandic adventure incorporating Northern Light hunts, the Blue Lagoon, food tours and trips into a Glacier and volcano. An epic trip around New Zealand for a month via Singapore that include trekking rainforests, vine yard tours, cruising the Milford Sound, a visit to Hobbit Land and Auckland.

What amazing adventure would you like to embark on?

There has also been an increase in larger extended family groups wanting to travel together to make precious memories and to make up for lost time too. Hire of chateaus in France, panoramic villas in Greece and large country houses in Scotland are just some of those arranged this year. The need to make memories and rebuild relationships is paramount and what better way than through travel whether in the UK or overseas.

I can tailor make bespoke itineraries and arrange money can’t buy experiences too. I’d love to know where you would like to go.

Wembley Park

After the free public art trail in Wembley Park caught our eye earlier this year, we felt it was high time to take a more in depth look at London’s most exciting new neighbourhood. Along with enough shops to keep even the most committed fashionista happy. If you’ve got a free weekend, here’s how to get the most out of a stylish staycation in the vibrant Northwest London district of Wembley Park, just a 12-minute tube journey from central London.

Reframing Picton

New artworks go on display at National Museum Cardiff alongside re-interpreted portrait of Thomas Picton

Reframing Picton, a community-led exhibition opens at National Museum Cardiff. The exhibition includes two newly commissioned artworks, which will become part of Wales’ national collection. The two new commissions include an immersive installation of sculpture, objects from the Amgueddfa Cymru collections, striking photographs and film. These works will help reframe the legacy of Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Picton (17581815) and give a voice to those most affected by Picton’s actions, and to those who live with the legacy today. Alongside the new commissions, Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Picton’s portrait will return to the museum’s walls in a travel frame following its removal in November 2021. The portrait by Sir Martin Archer Shee has been a part of Amgueddfa Cymru’s collections since its founding in 1907. The decision to reinterpret the portrait was made as part of Reframing Picton – a youth-led project team involving the SSAP Youth Leadership Network and the Amgueddfa Cymru Producers. The project team worked with the museum’s curators to provide additional information and context about Picton’s legacy as Governor of Trinidad at the turn of the 19th century. This includes his brutal treatment of the people of Trinidad, including the torture of 14-year-old Luisa Calderon – information which was not part of the museum’s previous interpretation of the portrait.

The Reframing Picton project team consulted with independent arts and education charity Culture& on different ways to approach the redisplay. “For generations, even up to recent years, saying ‘Black Lives Matter’ has been controversial. In the time we worked on this project we made a point to expose - not erase - history, and it was essential that we directly involved people connected to Trinidad, where Picton entrenched his reputation for barbarism during his tenure as Governor. “One of our goals for this exhibition was to create a site of conscience rather than indoctrination. To create a dialogue between museums, the governments that fund them and the communities they serve. To create healthy ways of addressing trauma. We hope that this exhibition will encourage visitors of all backgrounds to listen and learn from the past, and to put these learnings into practice today.” The commissions follow a callout by Amgueddfa Cymru in January 2021 for artists to explore alternatives to the colonial narrative represented by the portrait of Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas Picton and to centre Black experiences.

Our welcome is free thanks to funding from the Welsh Government and extends to people from all communities. Play your part in Wales’ story: by visiting, volunteering, by joining, by donating. www.museum.wales

Taking Sustainable Fashion to the Next Level

Angel Clothes Rentals is Continuing its Mission to put Sustainability first with Fashion Shows across Cardiff.

Angels Clothes Rentals, founded by Angel Jones; is a pre-loved fashion hub with a key message of helping to save the planet, one garment at a time. Angel’s message is clear, there is no need to buy so many clothing items, only for them to be worn a handful of times. Instead, Angel has created a clothing rental initiative helping the consumer rotate items based on their needs. Since the business started in January Angel has now decided to push the message out even further with fashion shows across Cardiff. Putting her management and business degree to use, Angel is now organising and managing fashions shows. Her fist show, influenced by ‘Sustainable Fashion Week’, attracted so much attention she has now decided to create regular seasonal shows, showcasing different brands on the runway.Keeping her items in a storage unit, which has been transformed into a studio where customers can choose, try on and enjoy a new type of shopping experience with friends. Angel’s passion continues to shine through, opting to cut no corners with even her clothing deliveries by electric scooter only. Her fashion shows are about awareness, ensuring that consumers do their bit in helping to make our planet more green and less wasteful. Angel states “This is something that Cardiff needs, sustainability awareness across Cardiff, a night out with a glass of Prosecco in hand, what could be better?”

Astriking botanical centrepiece adorns the gallery’s newly established community space, here visitors can relax, catch up with friends, and fully embrace the impressive spectrum of colour, medium, form and beauty of the artwork housed inside this hidden gem of Cardiff Bay.

From exhibiting the original work of new and emerging artists, to the welcoming and knowledgeable team on hand to offer insight and advice, Blackwater Gallery has built a reputation that offers a rarely found combination in the art market. They are dedicated to championing the work of emerging artists and original artwork, while encouraging accessibility and transparency for new art collectors, enthusiasts, and artists alike.

Passionate about maintaining Blackwater’s independent focus, the artist led gallery is navigated by a team with years of experience across multiple facets of the art world, dedicated to providing a platform for bold, new, emerging artists and original artwork. Evidence of their passion shines through in Blackwater’s

stunning schedule of exhibitions studded throughout the year. In 2022 alone, the gallery has hosted a powerful programme of debut solo shows, large scale group exhibitions, charity auctions, and exhibited the work of internationally acclaimed artists, with the gallery’s highly anticipated exhibition premiere evenings often becoming a sold out event.

At their core, the team are committed to discovering and supporting new and emerging artists. In 2021 the gallery launched the career of Makenzy Beard, a young artist who took to painting during lockdown. Since then Blackwater has provided invaluable guidance and support in driving Beard’s artistic career, navigating magazine interviews, tv reports, and international interest. In that time the work of Makenzy Beard has become highly acclaimed, sought after and quickly purchased by collectors worldwide. As part of the Gallery’s launch of Makenzy’s career, they recently opened the young artist’s first solo exhibition to global interest. With collectors now on an international scale, the exhibition provided an opportunity to showcase the incredible skill, development, and experience that Beard has accumulated in the last year.

Recently the gallery has sought to offer a platform for emerging artists committed to developing their practice. The exhibition, titled ‘objects’ provided a dedicated presence both in the gallery and online for emerging artists. Offering a fantastic opportunity for artists to exhibit their work in a professional capacity to the gallery’s list of clients, collectors, and art lovers. The gallery’s aim, to provide an opportunity for emerging creators to grow and take flight, finding their path as the next generation of groundbreaking artists. Blackwater Gallery is a wonder waiting to be discovered for visitors to Cardiff and the Bay. With an ever changing spectrum of artwork on the gallery’s schedule, it’s always a great time to stop in, enjoy a hot drink, and immerse yourself in the exciting array of events and exhibitions at Blackwater Gallery.

Making Healing a Priority

Richard and Lorna are hosts of the South Wales Wellness Show and are co-owners of Calon Lân Healing, a holistic therapy practice based in South Wales and Northern Ireland. Here they share their amazing journey from corporate work to inner work. If you’d told us 10 years ago we would be running a wellness show and a thriving healing practice, and collaborating with inspirational speakers, teachers and celebrities from around the world we would have thought you were mad! Our own journey of transformation began when we fell in love while working as senior consultants on a high profile IT project in South Wales. On the face of it, after 20 years in the corporate world, we were both at the peak of our careers and had material success, but were finding no real fulfilment in our day jobs.

We began to challenge each other and our ways of thinking, and started to explore mindfulness and meditation, alongside reading all the self-help books we could get our hands on. Around this time, we were looking around for ways to inject more meaning in our lives and started volunteering with a community project for the homeless. This challenged us in ways that we didn’t expect and ignited a spark in us for being of service to others. A chance advert for a diploma in Hypnotherapy and Counselling led

us both into a journey of learning and self-discovery so that we could in turn help those around us. Since then, we have explored, studied and experienced a wide variety of healing techniques and practices that we now incorporate into the services that we provide for people all around the world.

We created our healing practice in 2020 called Calon Lân Healing and have had the privilege of helping clients on their own journeys of self- discovery and healing, through the use of Coaching, Hypnotherapy, Reiki, Shamanic practices, Quantum Healing and Past Life Regression. We recognise that the healing journey is a continual process of increasing our awareness and uncovering the aspects of ourselves that we have ignored over the years. We encourage our clients to explore their emotions, challenge their negative beliefs and do the work needed to be able to love themselves fully. We are all on this journey together and we want to create safe spaces where people can explore new ideas and be open to change. At the start of 2022, we were offered the opportunity to become the new hosts of the South Wales Wellness Show and we knew immediately that this was the right thing for us to do. We could see first hand the toll that the lockdowns had taken, both on those trying to maintain small businesses, and

more generally on people’s mental health and their ability to connect and engage meaningfully with each other. To us, the wellness show is a unique opportunity to support local businesses and raise people’s awareness of the vast range of holistic therapies, products and services available to support their health and wellbeing. We have been fortunate enough to meet a large number of inspirational healing practitioners and teachers over the past few years and are excited for them to share their insights and knowledge with the people of South Wales.

South Wales Wellness Show will be taking place on Sunday 16th October in The Great Hall in Cardiff Student’s Union. Our vision for the show is to help people reclaim their power, reconnect with themselves and each other, and take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing.

Tickets are on sale at www.thewellnessshow.co.uk and are priced at £20. All workshops, talks and breakout sessions are included in the ticket price.

Taking Control of Varicose Veins

Huw Davies and Lewis Meecham have recently strengthened the team at Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals with their combined skills. We get familiar on all things 'Varicose Veins' to help you make the right decision for treatment.

Varicose vein and leg ulcer treatment is available privately at Nuffield Health Cardiff and Vale Hospitals. Recently two consultant vascular surgeons have joined the team, working there in addition to their NHS practice, where they have already gained in-depth experience and research knowledge. Venous disease specialists Huw Davies and Lewis Meecham have many research papers and a wealth of NHS and private patients who have benefitted from their skills and expertise. A range of walk in/walk out treatments, depending on the diagnosis, are available.

Huw Davies says, “Patients should definitely seek early attention for their veins if they are concerned - it's well documented that varicose veins affects people's quality of life and that interventions improve their symptoms. Whilst the majority will only suffer mild symptoms and cosmetic issues, some patients with varicose veins will go on to develop skin damage from their veins - this includes venous eczema or haemosiderin deposition, which is a brown staining of the skin.

70 Style of the city
HEALTH & WELLBEING

Also possible is lipodermato-sclerosis, which means an inflammation and hardening of the fat underneath the skin, even in the thinnest legs, resulting in hardening and reddening of the skin, pain and a tapering of the legs above the ankles and of course most worryingly - leg ulcers.”

Treatments are minimally invasive, can be performed under local anaesthetic, have a rapid recovery and speedy return to work and activities. Both of the new Nuffield Health consultants in Cardiff use radiofrequency ablation (RFA), which is similar to laser treatment but uses electricity to generate heat to surgically remove the vein rather than light and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy as well as the surgical treatment option of phlebectomy.

Huw Davies explains, “I've developed a particular interest in ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy - this minimally invasive technique is quick and effective in the right hands and is an excellent option to both RFA

and phlebectomy. Having an intimate knowledge of these techniques allows me to combine them as appropriate and develop a bespoke treatment package for each individual patient. We were both trained in foam sclerotherapy in a UK unit which has published its results extensively and achieves excellent short, mid and long term results from this treatment.”

“Patients are most often concerned by either the symptoms or the cosmetic appearance of their veins. Some do not even have visible veins showing but suffer from significant symptoms such as pain, aching, heaviness and leg swelling on a daily basis, which reduces both their physical well-being and affects their mental health. The only way to identify these people is through taking a careful history and examination by a vein expert and ultrasound imaging. Even if the damage is mainly cosmetic, it is important to have a venous ultrasound to rule out underlying deep varicose veins that require treatment first, as otherwise

they will have a rapid recurrence of their veins. These tools enable us to make the optimal recommendation for treatment”.

Vein specialists Huw Davies and Lewis Meecham are working on further improving services for patients in South East Wales. Their international research in this area is vital. The NICE guidelines on superficial venous disease were a major step forward and it also recognised that compression stockings are not an adequate long term management option. Huw Davies ran an award winning and the largest multi-centre study across Europe on the safety of ultrasound guided scleropathy involving 8056 patients. Lewis Meecham is also a fluent Welsh speaker.

My name is Lauren, I am the founder of EMPOWERED WOMEN FITNESS.

I am a mother, a qualified personal trainer, and fitness instructor. My passion is fitness and my mission is to help as many women as I possibly can to gain strength and confidence through the power of fitness. www.empoweredwomenfitness.co.uk

Finding

STRENGTH

Make a plan, write it down and work on it every single day - looking back in order to look forwards

My baby was only 6 months old, I was at the lowest point in my life, I had no self confidence, I felt like giving up. Then I found fitness. I found that through this hard time in my life, exercise was helping me. Helping me to build strength, helping me to build confidence physically and mentally.

I knew I wasn’t the first woman to go through tough times and I knew I wouldn't be the last. So I made a plan EMPOWERED WOMEN FITNESS. I did my nvq level 3 in personal training, I applied for a place in university on a strength and conditioning course, I set up workshops and classes to empower women through the power of health and fitness. My workshops were at full capacity, my classes were booming, my 1-2-1 clients were rapidly increasing. I gave 110% effort into working on my plan and my hard work was just starting to pay off.

It was March 2020, rumours of lockdown were arising. I like most people was afraid, I was afraid that the gym was closing and that I wouldn't be able to exercise, I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to help all of these amazing women, I was afraid that I would no longer be able to do what I love. I thought long and hard about this, I cried, I lost sleep and then I came up with an idea. I was going to do something I had never done before. I was going to go live on instagram to do a virtual workout. The thought of this made my stomach turn, I was so nervous, I thought about how embarrassing it

would be if no one tuned into my live workout but then i also thought about the possibilities of how amazing it could be. I was overwhelmed by the amazing response, in such a scary and uncertain time I was able to help hundreds of women through the power of fitness, I built an online community of women from all over Wales, England and even some women from overseas an we came together every day and worked out online.

The plan that I had first made had to change because of the circumstances of the pandemic but my goal has always remained the same, to empower women physically and mentally through the power of fitness. It is from having this goal, making this planning, and refusing to give up I have built my business to what it is today. Three years later I still train online every day, I am able to train an unlimited amount of women live and also these workouts are saved for women to use again. I have helped hundreds maybe thousands of women in their fitness journey. I have now grown my online business, I have created a system where I am also able to design personalised meal plans and workout plans for my clients to further help them to achieve their fitness goals. I absolutely love what I do, I love the feeling I get each time one of my clients achieves a goal that we have set. Fitness is my passion, fitness helped me through the hardest time of my life and continues to do so every single day. Only look back to see how far you have come.

MUM OF TWO coming through!

Baby Travis is here! My little ray of sunshine, born in the middle of a heatwave. His hotly-anticipated entrance into the world didn’t really go to plan (what birth ever does?) I had an emergency c-section. After the initial shock, the first 24 hours was great- I was living in that ‘other-worldly, new-born bubble, still high on drugs’ life until I experienced the worst pain ever!

Unfortunately, I had a blood clot resulting in a week in hospital. Urgh. Bad memories but fast forward 5 weeks and I’m out of pain and the baby blues have gone. Hurrah. I’m feeling SO much better and I’m settling into life with TWO! It’s insanely different to last time. Indy was born on the cusp of lockdown. When we left hospital with Indy, we entered a new world. We were shacked up for months and it gave us the chance as a family of 3 with a new-born to learn how to be parents with no distractions. We got into a great routine, we spent time relaxing, we had no visitors to host and worry about. This time around, LIFE GOES ON. The world keeps spinning. I have a toddler to look after and run around with. Family and friends coming and going every day

but also work to get back to. It’s an adjustment for sure, but I love being a Mum and I feel so lucky to have had two healthy, happy children. I forgot how it made me feel that this tiny little human depends only on you for everything. It’s a HUGE responsibility but I love that he needs me. I love feeding him, changing him when he gets upset. He really is a fab little kid and is coming along great. He was born with a natural mohawk, dark blue eyes and a round little face like his Mama. I can’t wait to see what he is like and what personality he has. At the moment, he is pretty relaxed, loves his milk and sleep. He snores very LOUDLY for a little fella. Indy loves him, pulls his legs, puts stickers on his head, tickles his feet and even though a little heavy handed, she showers him with kisses and cuddles all the time. So, whilst building up a tough exterior and some resilience he is very much loved and has completed our family. As I say, life goes on this time around and work is busier than ever. I’m taking a few months off but squeezing in a few gigs here and there. My life is 100mph as always but I don’t think I could function any other way. Roll on the adventures. I can’t wait to take you on our Journey!

Dr Brown's GOLD Bundle from Baby Central

I had heard such amazing reviews for Dr Brown's bottles that I was so excited to try them for Travis. The fact that they are anti-colic specialists was even more of deal breaker to give them a go. The bottles so far have been brilliant for Travis. He guzzles every feed pretty much and thankfully he latched on straight away. I found them an easy and comfortable way to feed him and NO sign of colic. What I really love about this package though is the The Dr Brown’s Clean Steam Bottle Steriliser and Dryer which offers the total package. Steam clean, dry, store and more! When I was pumping it held my entire pumping system and 6 bottles! www.baby-central.co.uk

Angelcare Ac327 3-in-1 Baby Movement Monitor with Video

I needed some new CCTV for Travis and I was recommended the Angelcare range of monitors. Yes, the people who do the brilliant bath seats and supports. This monitor not only looks the part but can be trusted, day and night. I was especially excited by the movement sensor pad which I didn't have with Indy but reassures you, by only alarming if no movements have been detected for 20 seconds. it gives me sound peace of mind now that I put the baby to bed upstairs in the early evening. www.angelcarebaby.com

POLLY'S MUM

SnuzPod4 Bedside Crib

I'll swear by this over and over... Indy, my first, slept like a dream in the SnuzPod that it was absolutely coming back out for Travis. We dusted it off and bought a new mattress and even though he is only 6 weeks so far so good! I pop him down and he settles straight away. He knows that the SnuzPod means bedtime. I keep it next my bed, not bedside, but close enough to have him nearby for a safe bonding experience. I love the Snuz style, the designs and patterns of the bed sheets and the Snuz Cloud is a cute little must-have add on. www.snuz.co.uk

iCandy Peach 7 Pushchair and Carrycot

This is the dreamy, ultimate pushchair for parents, the world’s definitive, luxury single to double pushchair beautifully engineered, designed to fit perfectly around you and your baby. It's the red-hot supercar of prams and really is the cream of the crop. The best bits for me are the integrated Ride-on Board which offers a seamless solution for a family like mine with a new baby and toddler who is walking but still needs help. It’s an anti-slip platform which holds up to 20kg - perfect for tired little legs. Indy LOVES it! Also, if you really wanted to treat yourself, get the iCandy Peach rucksack to complete the look. The black edition is all out chic which includes a changing mat, branded wipe clean liner, bottle tote and bag hooks to attach to your iCandy Peach. www.icandyworld.com

Family Law Made Easy at Watkins & Gunn

Grab a cuppa and let’s talk the do’s and don’ts of divorce with the family law team at Watkins and Gunn.

There isn’t a family law issue that hasn’t hit the desks of the Family Law team at Watkins and Gunn, from your run of the mill, family home and pension to your high profile high net worth/ high profile cases. Between them they have seen it all. There is very much a team ethos at Watkins and Gunn, you receive the benefit of sensible, strong advice stemming from many years of experience. When asked what is important to them, they all answer the same, they take pride in offering a bespoke, discrete service whilst always doing their best for every single client. They care about their clients and this shows right from the initial enquiry that is made. Their inter-personal skills are second to none. The team want to get across that separation doesn’t have to be scary and in contemplation of a divorce, they wanted to offer something of real value to their clients, something that provides people with the tailored advice and information to plan the next steps and future.

The team offers a unique product called “Blueprint”. It’s not your free half hour type advice. A free consultation is like a wolf dressed in sheep’s clothing, a sales pitch in disguise. The family team however offer “gold service” where they gather the information, give bespoke advice to fit each person’s needs and then follow it up with an action plan. You go away with your “blueprint”.

Meet Sophie Hughes, she is the Head of the Family team and Director at Watkins and Gunn, having been at the firm since 2003. She has overseen the growth of the team from just 4 to 15; one of the largest specialist family law teams in the region. Covering a breadth of working from care proceedings to high finance. As testament to their experience, the team won Family Law Team of the Year at the Wales Legal Awards 2019, an accolade that they remain very proud of. All of the lawyers are members of Resolution - www.resolution.org.uk and are genuinely committed to a Code of Practice that promotes a constructive approach to family issues and considers the needs of the whole family, in particular the best interests of children. Sophie’s training and early years were spent with a magic circle firm in London and then a large South London practice. Sophie is singled out as a leader in her field both in the Chambers UK Guide and the Legal 500 Directory. She is a highly regarded by clients and other lawyers for her expertise in ‘private’ family law matters, including divorce, financial arrangements on divorce and cohabitation disputes; with expertise in high value/complex and international cases.

WATKINS &

Meet the private law team here who help guide clients through relationship breakdown and specialise in financial matters.

Katie O’Connell, joined the talented team, in August 2021, bringing with her bags of experience in all Family Law matters, including complicated financial matters. Katie qualified in 2014 and previously trained and worked at a niche Family Law firm in Cardiff. Katie has built up extensive links throughout Cardiff and the valleys, with clients across the country. Throughout her career Katie has regularly contributed to media, commenting on developments in Family Law and was previously interviewed live on the ITV Evening News in relation to the “smacking ban” within Wales. Why not take a look at the social media pages for Watkins and Gunn (Facebook: Watkins and Gunn Solicitors, Instagram: @watkinsandgunn and of course LinkedIn) where commentary on various “hot topics” can be found.

FIVE INVALUABLE TIPS

WATKINS AND

2.

3.

when

do not always have all the answers we are not qualified to provide counselling support. Services such as relationship counselling/ coaching can help put perspective to your situation and enable you to focus with a clear mind.

4. Be organised- get your “paperwork” in order as solicitors charge by the hour and though we deal with cases in a proactive, cost-effective way it saves time and money if you are organised and can provide information when we need it

5. Be realistic- uncoupling can take time. Try not to put yourself under extra pressure with self-imposed time limits.

Leah is a senior Associate having joined in 2013. Like Sophie, her expertise is also in “private” family law matters, including divorce, financial arrangements on divorce and cohabitation disputes. She is known for her clear pragmatic and empathetic and focused approach and where necessary, strong robust representation. Sophie and Leah are the only two Solicitors in South Wales who hold Resolution’s Specialist Accreditations in both small and big money cases. Leah also holds an accreditation in cohabitation matters. Resolution's specialist accreditation recognises members who demonstrate excellence in the practice of family law and in their specific areas of expertise. Leah comes from a small village in the Llŷn Peninsular and is a native Welsh speaker. She is passionate about the language and its importance and so she recognises how important it is to be able to offer a Welsh language service to clients who are going through one of the most difficult if not the most difficult trials in life. She is the Firm’s lead internally promoting not just the language but also the history and culture of Wales. She is committed and very confident in offering that quality specialist advice both verbally and in written communication in Welsh. Throughout her career Leah has regularly contributed to BBC Cymru media, commenting on developments in Family Law and has previously interviewed live on Newyddion S4C.

What do we do exactly?

The Healthcare industry is at the beating heart of our country, we know what a demanding line of work this can be and care about getting it right. We do this by listening first and working with quick turnarounds.

We focus on helping nurse and care staff find permanent positions, including both full and parttime-hour contracts, whilst also helping remove the stress for busy healthcare organisations, who lack the time to recruit directly.

At THS we listen first, ensuring we find both client and candidate the perfect fit for their future. We can offer bespoke recruitment services covering vacancies from operations directors to care home managers.

As part of our recruitment process, we also provide full references as well as police and NMC checks.

A streamlined approach to healthcare recruitment

We take pride in offering both client and candidate a streamlined recruitment process, the ‘best in the business’ which includes aftercare. Our vision is simply to supply fantastic staff members and alleviate any ‘headaches’ our clients may have. Sometimes there are simply not enough hours in the day to hire staff, along with running an effective healthcare service, that’s where THS Recruitment comes in.

We very much appreciate the front-line nurses and care staff that in recent months have held this country together. What continues to be important is the right candidates are implemented to ensure the highest standard of care in the health sector; To us this is paramount.
