8 - PUBLISHER’S NOTE
> Here at Tampa Style, we always try to take a positive approach to the ongoing events in our everyday life, but the fact remains that for every “up” there seems to be a corresponding “down,” almost like a never-ending roller coaster ride. I just hope that once this note is in your hands, our politicians will have found a way to finally use their “brain” to make wise decisions for the general public and not only for themselves.

Many businesses have had a nice start this year, and we don’t want that to be interrupted by some elected officials who hopefully won’t have their titles come next election. It is important to keep these businesses close to heart as we enter the holiday season, and we should all look for ways to support our great shops and malls that add to the uniqueness of the Tampa area. In this issue of Tampa Style, we present many wonderful options for your luxury holiday shopping, with a focus on benefiting the local economy with your everyday and holiday gift purchases. Spending your “gifting” dollars at our friendly and familiar retailers is as much a gift to them as to those on your list, adding extra meaning to the act of giving. Speaking of giving, we still offer wonderful subscription packages, a perfect gift idea for a friend or simply a treat for you. $1 profit from every new subscription will be donated to Runway to Hope Foundation, which aids children and their families impacted by pediatric cancer, one of the wonderful charities here in Florida, which will keep us in the giving mood long after the holidays. For those “hunting and pecking” through the tentacles of event post coverage or

How Tampa Cigar Festival 2013 is a Reflection of the Past By Courtney Caggiano
> In 1885, cigar pioneer Vicente Martinez Ybor, namesake of the historic Ybor City district, relocated his Florida cigar business from Key West to Tampa, at the time a humble fishing village that seemed a promising location to launch Ybor’s industry to fame. The following year, Ybor and fellow cigar maker Ignacio Haya founded Tampa’s first cigar factories, and the town claimed a new purpose and a new name to suit it: Cigar City.
TampaStyleMagazine.com
OUT & ABOUT - 13
“
TAMPA BECAME THE INDUSTRY’S CAPITOL, EVEN PRODUCING MORE HANDROLLED CIGARS MADE ENTIRELY OF CUBAN TOBACCO THAN CUBA ITSELF.
”
The height of Tampa’s booming cigar days were surrounded by clouds of cigar smoke, reaching high above the town and spreading over cities near and far eager for a taste of the Cuban tobacco that was so popular in the Tampa area. With over 200 cigar factories, Tampa became the industry’s capitol, even producing more hand-rolled cigars made entirely of Cuban tobacco than Cuba itself. Although the industry has slowed down - there are 24 factories standing today, only one of which is still in operation the city of Tampa has all but forgotten its cigar days of the past. Home to several celebrations of the city’s love for rolled tobacco, Tampa will be hosting its second annual Tampa Cigar Festival on Saturday, November 23 in Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park. From 10 am to 4:30 pm, cigar aficionados, Tampa natives, and anyone looking for a day of food and fun are invited to take part in the historic festival. As an all-in-one celebration and learning experience, the world’s largest cigar festival offers various festivities and entertainment opportunities held throughout the day that are sure to please even Ybor himself. Come relive Tampa’s cigar heritage by relaxing at one of the cigar lounges, where you can meet those who enjoy the timeless leisure of cigar smoking and remember Tampa’s glory days in Cigar City fashion. This is a great way to experience the recreational joy of cigar smoking for new smokers and veterans alike. Festivities also include
beer and wine gardens, food pavilions, two stages with nonstop entertainment, and children’s play area. As cigar lighting begins to heat up the afternoon, Tampa radio personality Cigar Dave will heat up the airwaves with a live broadcast from the festival. The acclaimed authority on cigars and spirits and host of “The Cigar Dave Show” will be taking part in the historic event and sharing the excitement on his nationally syndicated radio show. If you wish to enjoy your cigars in luxury, the VIP Cigar Experience is the most elegant way to attend the festival. For $125, the VIP Experience offers festival admission, reserved seating for the broadcast of “The Cigar Dave Show,” and access to the VIP Cigar Experience tent with an all day buffet, drinks, premium cigar packs, and more. For cigar lovers who can’t start the fun soon enough, Cigar Night Live is the perfect prelude to the party. On Friday, November 22 the J.C. Newman Cigar Factory will be lighting up historic Ybor City from 7 pm to 10 pm. Tickets are $100, and participants can enjoy handmade cigars, live entertainment, dinner and drinks, along with a tour of the J.C. Newman factory, the oldest operating cigar factory in Tampa. Established in 1895, the J.C. Newman Company relocated to Tampa in 1954 to be closer to Cuba, Newman’s primary source of tobacco. Today, the factory stands as a reminder of the success stories that gave Cigar City its reputation and Tampa natives their handcrafted cigars.
Another highlight of Cigar Night Live is the silent auction with proceeds benefiting the Cigar Family foundation; a nonprofit charity founded in 2001 by the Newman and Fuente cigar families. The charity embodies both families’ dedication to the Dominican Republic, which produces some of the most sought after cigars in the world. Whether you come for the charity, the cigars, or the dining and entertainment, the Tampa Cigar Festival will leave you with a sense of community and pride, even if you are not a Cigar City resident. Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn sees the festival as a remembrance of Hispanic Florida’s vibrant history, a history that all of America shares as a nation built on the determination and dreams of immigrants. He says, “The Tampa Cigar Festival is a chance to celebrate our community’s cultural diversity and the rich history of immigrant families who came here from places like Cuba and Spain.” So come light up a cigar, relax, and breathe in the smoky memories of old Cigar City. General admission tickets are $10, and free to children 12 and under. Prime hotel accommodations can be found at Embassy Suites in Downtown Tampa, which offers a special Tampa Cigar Festival rate. EXPLORING SAVANNAH The Luxurious South By: Michael Poley
> Few cities have the same alluring combination of wealth and mystery as Savannah. Traveling through the streets of its historic district, one feels transported, struck by the beauty of the city’s parks and preserved architecture. Every block reveals another row of pubs, restaurants, antique shops and galleries; each storefront presenting itself as its own comfortable destination. Established in 1773, Savannah is Georgia’s first city. The city’s founder, James Oglethorpe, planned for the city to be divided into a grid of lanes and parks, and it is this layout plan that gives the city much of its distinctive look and feel. Beyond its historic architecture, Savannah is an artistic hub, attracting incredible and diverse talents with its schools and museums, in particular, the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Telfair Museum of Art. Grand Bohemian: Fusing Music, Art and Hospitality on the Riverfront Overlooking the rows of 19th century warehouses––now shops and restaurants––that run along the Savannah
TampaStyleMagazine.com
River, the Bohemian Hotel: Savannah Riverfront is the newest hotel from The Kessler Collection luxury portfolio of hotels. Opened in late-July of this year, the 75-room Bohemian Hotel is a gem that offers its guests a fantastic riverside location alongside dynamic luxury and artistic decadence. With an atmosphere designed to evoke the riverfront, the hotel’s immersive and unique environment takes stones and driftwood as some of its primary conceptual elements. Rich rust and copper colors are aesthetically paired with museum grade collections of original art and nautically inspired décor that are found throughout the hotel. Guestrooms are luxurious and modern, and include the innovative Roomlinx system, allowing guests to easily access information and entertainment throughout their stay. For dining, the Bohemian Hotel: Savannah Riverfront has Rocks on the River, where you can enjoy a mix of fresh seafood and traditional American grub. Even if you don’t dine at the riverfrontlevel restaurant, you should stop in to peak at the fantastic wood and stone-

inspired furniture. At night, the hotel’s rooftop bar, Rocks on the Roof, becomes a popular Savannah nightlife destination. Perched on the top of the hotel, locals as well as guests can enjoy the perfect combination of tapas, drinks, live music and one-of-a-kind views of the Savannah River and historic district. The Mansion at Forsyth: Historic Chic While the newly opened Bohemian Hotel: Savannah Riverfront is the perfect location along the water, you may also want to book a night at the Mansion at Forsyth, another Kessler Collection hotel near Forsyth Park. The 126-room hotel is a restored Victorian Georgian mansion, complete with arches and turrets. If you’re an overworked gourmand with an addiction to abstract art, this luxury hotel truly has it all, with its own full-service spa, fine dining restaurant, cooking school and art gallery. If a stroll through any of Savannah’s parks, including the exquisitely Southern Forsyth Park, doesn’t provide the relaxation that you require, a visit to the
Poseidon Spa should be on the top of your list. Its soothing and cool interior will submerge you in tranquility as you pamper yourself with a combination of spa treatments––or perhaps a couples spa package if you and your partner are feeling romantic. After a relaxing Swedish massage and manicure, you’ll want to have lunch at the 700 Kitchen Cooking School. Make sure that you’ve made your reservations in advance for this culinary experience, as Chef Darin’s Low Country cooking classes fill up fast. Featured as the number one thing to do in Savannah on TripAdvisor.com, this cooking experience lives up to the hype. Even if the kitchen is your first home, you will definitely learn a thing or three under this cook’s tutelage. Tour It Up: Sights to See in the City After you’ve surprised yourself by cooking like a gourmet (and then eating like one) you’ll be headed out into Savannah for some refreshing sightseeing. As you decide whether to see the local landmarks by bus, trolley, hearse or horse-
drawn carriage, you’ll have the opportunity to discover more sides of Savannah, like the historic Savannah of the Civil War; the famous Savannah of Capital Records co-founder Johnny Mercer or Girl Scout’s founder, Juliette Gordon Lowe; and the cinematic Savannah, captured in films such as Something to Talk About, Forrest Gump and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. However you choose to explore the city of Savannah, you will experience only curious and comfortable pleasure as you discover this enchanting and luxurious Southern city.<

> October brought pumpkin flavored everything, a bit of cooler weather, and a jam packed social calendar to Tampa for a month full of intriguing festivities. If locals wanted to partake in spooky Halloween events, raise big bucks for deserving charities or just wanted to have a good laugh, they could easily do it all this month in the Bay! It wouldn’t have been the Halloween season in Tampa without a night at Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens. Horror lovers could choose from 14 different nights throughout October to experience elaborate haunted houses, sinister scare zones, and hair-raising live entertainment throughout the park. This year’s theme was based around the “13 Evils,” some of those being The Torturer, The Psychopath, The Surgeon, The Possessed, The Zombie, and The Voodoo Queen, all of which left Howl-O-Scream guests looking over their shoulder long after they left the attraction. If you think you can brave it out, look into attending Busch Garden’s event next year so you can be a part of this shuddersome occasion. Charity events already make for marvelous nights out, but when you add comedy to the mix they make for astounding

events that raise an even more astounding amount of money. Improv-Tampa Bay hosted the 7th Annual Crack Up For Cancer Comedy Benefit on October 16th in Ybor City. For each ticket purchased, 100% of the proceeds were donated to the Motiff Cancer Center and the All Children’s Hospital through the local organization, Cure on Wheels. Tampa residents banded together and ensured that the event had a full house. Guests enjoyed acts by local special guest comedians including Tim Pulnik, Al Romas, Tim Wilkins, Dean Napolitano, and Rahn Hortman, all while raising money for an incredible cause through raffles and donations. Crack Up For Cancer has raised over $30,000 in the last six years for local cancer charities and that’s not even including this year’s amount! No one likes cancer but everyone enjoys laughing, so this fundraising event made for a winwin night all around. The night of October 16th was full of even more laughter; with big-ticket comedian, Emmy-award winning actor, and television host Jimmy Fallon also performing in the Bay. The former “Saturday Night Live” star came to Tampa for his “Clean Cut Comedy Tour” and fans were eager to see him back in the area for the first time in five years. “Late Night
With Jimmy Fallon” is one of NBC’s most prominent programs and his popularity was no exception in Tampa, with Fallon selling out the Tampa Theatre in Downtown Tampa. Special guests included an impressive line up, with comedians Julian McCullough, Nate Bargatze, Nick Thune, and Seth Herzog all performing and ensuring that there wasn’t a straight face in the crowd after their sets. I can only hope that Fallon frequents Tampa more often and that it’s not another half a decade waiting period this time around! < Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell! TampaStyleMagazine.com

In 2005 Matt Damon bought a home on North Bay Road in Miami Beach for about $15 million. After meeting his wife, who was a bartender in Miami, he has moved on and seems to be more interested in focusing his life in Los Angeles where he bought a home on the same street as his long time friend Ben Affleck. Matt is hoping to make $5 million on his investment and has listed his extravagant waterfront property for a whopping $20 million. Listings show the 12,705-square foot home has seven bedrooms, nine full baths, a two-bedroom guesthouse, and amenities including a home theatre, custom office, and cavernous master bedroom suite with a spa bath and private terrace. Then there’s 170 feet of waterfront on beautiful Biscayne Bay, and neighbors including Barry Gibb, Dwyane Wade, Alex Rodriguez, and Chris Bosh. “From the moment you step inside the beautiful courtyard entrance, you are immediately surrounded by spectacular, sweeping panoramic views and you instantly begin to see what makes this property truly special,” said listing agent Jill Hertzberg. “This rare jewel in the heart of Miami Beach is an incredible setting for anyone lucky enough to enjoy the fabulous lifestyle this address provides.”
BRUCE WILLIS Bruce Willis is looking to cash out. The veteran action flick actor known for his roles in a number of major motion pictures such as G.I. Joe and Die Hard, just to name a few, listed another one of his real estate holdings earlier this year. Bruce listed his Beverly Hills home that he picked up in 2004 for $9 million for more than double that price at $22 million! The major increase in price is mainly due to the fact that South California real estate is a hot buy right now. Bruce and wife Emma Heming have also put a lot of work into the 10,379-square-foot home. Boasting 11 bedrooms and 11 baths, Willis’ home has large living spaces that open up to a courtyard with a fountain. The updated kitchen has a large center island and restaurant-quality appliances. Outside the home’s grounds include a tennis court and pool.

KATY PERRY Pop star sensation Katy Perry is determined to sell the mansion she bought with ex-husband Russell Brand. The California girl is ready to put the final connection to the relationship behind her once and for all. After listing the 7-bedroom, 11-bath Hollywood Hills home in April, the 28-year-old singer dropped her asking price by $430,000 again in June. Now listed for $6.495 million, Katy is asking $5,000 less than she and Russell Brand, a British actor and comedian, bought it for in 2011. The luxurious property is located on a 3-acre compound. Katy and Russell’s’ Spanish-style home has major curb appeal with a gorgeous gated entrance, notable architectural details and views of the Los Angeles cityscape. Other highlights of the property include a guesthouse built in 2004, a lagoon-style pool with waterfall and lofted ceilings throughout the residence, which create a spacious feel in the main living rooms.
LEONARDO DICAPRIO Leonardo DiCaprio, one of Hollywood’s A-listers, is probably best known for his starring role in the film Titanic and most recently The Great Gatsby. He’s earned countless awards and nominations. Now he’s selling his Malibu home for an astonishing $18.9 million. Leonardo’s Malibu beach house consists of three properties with a combined seven bedrooms and six bathrooms. The main house dominates the large lot, with a rooftop terrace, patio and deck, all facing the beach. Built in 1927, the home has high ceilings with exposed beams and an open floor plan leading straight out to the outdoor living spaces, taking advantage of the Malibu weather and spectacular views. Other amenities of the property include a gym, two kitchens, (one in the separate guesthouse), hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows. The handsome A-list actor is motivated to sell his beach house because he prefers to spend his time on the East Coast where he has en eco-friendly penthouse in New York City and is apparently on the hunt for another Manhattan home.
SARAH JESSICA PARKER The Sex In The City Star Sarah Jessica Parker changes homes like Carrie Bradshaw changes shoes. After years of searching for the perfect Manhattan townhouse Sarah and her husband Mathew Broderick bought a townhouse in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village for $19 million. But, just 18 months later, the couple put it back on the market for $24.995 million. The couple refurbished the extraordinary townhome but never even moved into the place. According to the NY Daily News, the couple decided to sell because of a lack of privacy. The five-bedroom Greek Revival-style townhouse described as “truly special” is located in a prime spot in the Village, according to the listing. The bottom floor -- or “garden floor” has access to an outdoor garden, as well as a designer Boffi kitchen and breakfast nook. Going up a floor, the main entrance features 12-foot ceilings and a “double parlor.” The fourth floor is entirely devoted to the master suite, consisting of a “spectacular” bathroom, multiple walk-in closets and a large terrace. <

LASERS, LASHES & LIGHT THERAPY The Risk Of Getting More Than What You Bargained For By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law
> The beauty industry is a multi-billion dollar institution that continues to grow exponentially thanks to technology and insatiable need to stay looking young. The luxurious services that that are now available appear to be something out of The Jetsons… laser lights, mink fur eyelashes, miracle creams. While some these treatments may sound familiar and have been around for years, most continue to evolve and change as technological advances are made. But what about the technicians? Is the knowledge of their practice evolving at the same rate? The state of Florida requires that cosmetologists be licensed by The Board of Cosmetology and are governed by Chapter 477 of the Florida Statutes, as well as Chapter 61 of the Administrative Code. Strict adherence to the law is often a goal, but not a certainty. Client satisfaction drives the salon’s “need to please,” and corners are often cut to achieve the client’s desired results. Luxuries such as eyelash extensions and laser therapies are more popular now than ever. Technicians in these industries must be sure to assess the client and their current condition before proceeding with the treatment. If a technician is not educated on industry advances – including possible adverse affects of current procedures – the client is being placed at risk for permanent damage. The technician may then be found liable for negligence, or more, if damage occurs and a lawsuit is filed. More often than not, these cases are settled by in-
OrlandoStyleMagazine.com
surance companies, who are fully aware of the cost of litigation and the effect the stigma of permanent damage has on a jury – basic logic follows that it may be cheaper for the company to settle out of court. While these procedures seem benign, damage such as blindness, skin discoloration and severe burns can occur. So do your homework, ladies and gentlemen, because peace of mind is priceless: 1. Check to see if your technician is licensed. Visit http://www.myfloridalicense.com/dbpr/ and click on “Verify a License.” This will allow you to search for your technician’s name, standing and license class. You may also make a claim on this website. 2. Go to a few initial consultations before choosing your technician. You need to be able to communicate effectively with your cosmetologist. 3. Ask if your technician carries insurance. They should. In the event that damage does occur, chances are the insurance company is the only party that will be able to adequately and financially address the claim. 4. ALWAYS follow the after-care instructions, no matter how simple or irrelevant they may be. This may result in your contributing to the damage that occurs, if damage does occur, and could potentially limit or foreclose on your ability to recover.
5. If damage does occur, call an attorney that specializes in personal injury. Statements you make and actions you take may be used against you in court, so what you say and do has an effect on your case. An attorney can help guide you through the process of what steps to take (and avoid) when it comes to processing your claim. 6. Keep in mind these services are regulated by the Florida Board of Business and Professional Regulation, NOT any medical boards. If you are receiving a service such as BOTOX®, JUVÉDERM® and other dermal fillers, you will need to check licensure with the Florida Board of Medicine. The website for license verification is here: http://www.doh.state. fl.us/mqa/medical/ So before you hit the salon, go online and do some good old-fashioned research. Call some friends. Get recommendations and read reviews. Chances are you’ll be glad you did. <

THE LUXURY OF A
FACIAL! By Jennifer Marcus
> Grab a glass of cool water, lay back and enjoy 60 minutes of uninterrupted bliss as you indulge in the most luxurious of facials. The Shala Spa, located at Miami Beach’s famed Dream South Beach Hotel, is one of the few spas that offers the Radiant Recovery Facial, a non-invasive, new generation soft peel that exfoliates, infuses, and resurfaces the skin while using only holistic, natural ingredients. As you walk inside the Dream South Beach Hotel lobby, you’re met with chic and whimsical modern décor juxtaposed with historic features, such as the keystone front desk dating back to 1939 when the original façade was erected. The Shala Spa, nestled in the corner of the lobby, welcomes you with a crisp lemongrass scent and an inviting smile from managing director and facial extraordinaire Monica Charvet. Spas on South Beach are becoming increasingly bigger with dozens of massage/facial/ salon rooms, however the Shala Spa keeps it intimate with just two rooms allowing for a truly private and customized session. Charvet believes that beauty is not only the “physical dimension, but reflects the vitality and health of the whole person.” Her goal is to treat the mind~body~spirit in a holistic approach and use only key ingredients composed of herbs, plants, fruits, and essential oils sans cancer-causing agents, chemical additives, and parabens. StyleToMe.com
Along with providing relaxation, facials help rejuvenate the skin’s complexion and create what is commonly heard of as a “glow.” While many consumers treat themselves to harsh chemical peels, prescriptive acne treatments and cosmetic injections to look younger and have clearer skin, the Radiant Recovery Facial provides similar benefits while using a softer approach combining ultrasound technology, specialty serums, and a sculpting technique. Shala, meaning “sanctuary” is a most appropriate name as the facial/massage room is just that, a sanctuary. The dim lighting, tranquil music, and ornate wall detailing provide a peaceful space for whatever treatment you choose. Once comfortable, a steam bath is supplied to open the facial pores and awaken the skin. A high performance spatula, if you will, using sonic waves at millions of vibrations per second is used to glide over the skin increasing circulation and providing a deep cleansing of cellular and environment toxins. Charvet, who has been an expert in facials for more than 25 years, then evaluates addresses specific skin conditions for the best treatment process. Upon evaluation, organic products are infused into the skin beyond the epidermis level to hydrate, and stimulate collagen and elastin production. When the process is completed, the skin is noticeably fresher and cleaner… and you feel calmer and more serene as well.
Benefits of the Radiant Recovery Facial include improved blood circulation, reduced pore size, smoother fine lines and wrinkles, firmer skin, reduced hyper pigmentation, melasma and sun damage, and it helps break up scars. You’ll feel like a new you. And you’ll look like one too. It seems appropriate that the Shala Spa is located in one of the most serene hotels in South Beach. In an area saturated with hotels, the Dream South Beach seems like the sophisticated, more mature sister that oozes sexy but remains classy. Once the iconic Art Deco Tudor Hotel and Palmer House, Dream South Beach has transformed the two to create a fashion-forward boutique hotel offering 108 guestrooms, an increasingly popular trending rooftop pool lounge and infinity pool, and the Serafina Dream South Beach restaurant specializing in signature Northern Italian cuisine. Whether you come to the Dream South Beach for a vacation, a staycation, or just to indulge at the Shala Spa, you’re mind, body, and spirit will thank you. www.shalaspa.com <

Protecting
This was what Deanna Armel did for ten years working as a Firefighter Paramedic for the City of Orlando Fire Department before her career ended in 2006 with an on-the-job back injury. Growing up in Jacksonville, Florida in an entrepreneurial climate, Deanna witnessed her grandmother as the “Pioneer in the beauty industry” as she not only opened the first Day Spa in the city but also created her own line of skin care and cosmetics which continues to thrive today- Frances Calhoun Skin Care (FCSkinCare.com). Deanna consistently heard both her mother and her grandmother say that it was their goal to “help everyone look and feel their best.”

It is evident that Deanna was meant to “impact lives” and she does just that with her Real Estate company here in Orlando, Florida. Armel Real Estate, Inc. is a full-service commercial and residential real estate firm specializing in selling golf courses, businesses and luxury homes and is composed of a team of five agents. Deanna maintains a small firm and emphasizes “teamwork and exceptional service with a personal touch.” “It is an honor to be recognized in Orlando Style Magazine by my professional colleagues in the community not only as a woman with strong leadership skills but also as a female with tenacity and compassion,” stated Deanna Armel.

As Larry Graham (one of her clients) stated, “Deanna has a sense of compassion and sincerity that goes beyond any sale. I am truly convinced that she truly cares about her clients’ desires as evidenced by my own experience gleaned from many interactions with her.” When Deanna began her real estate career, she reached out to a longtime family friend who was also the nation’s leading golf course broker and still is, Hilda Allen. Deanna’s very first real estate transaction was the sale of a golf course with Hilda-The Majors Golf Club in Palm Bay, Florida. Since then, Deanna has worked with Hilda in closing more than a dozen golf courses including the most recent- The Legacy Club at Alaqua Lakes in Longwood, Florida as well as Highlands Reserve in Davenport, Florida. Other local area golf courses Deanna has sold with Hilda include Windermere Country Club, Timacuan Country Club, Palisades Golf Club, Kissimmee Oaks Golf Club, just to name a few. “Deanna is the ‘One in a Billion’ that you will be lucky to use to sell your home, buy a home or sell your business,” said the Stepp’s, founders and owners of VELOCITY Powerboats which Deanna successfully sold this year. “Impacting Lives and Selling Property…” what Deanna Armel is doing today. <

50 - TRAVEL ‘N STYLE
STAYCATION! By Ro Martinez
When Juan Ponce de Leon set out to find treasure in Florida, he succeeded. Our mild climate and miles of beaches make Florida a popular destination for people from all over the world. Young people flock to our shores during spring break, snowbirds descend to escape frigid temperatures, and couples arrive for romantic weddings.
TampaStyleMagazine.com
TRAVEL ‘N STYLE - 51
> You can still find treasure today in your own backyard. Florida has fresh and saltwater for boating, snorkeling, fishing, and scuba diving. State parks have trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding surrounded by nature. Florida has attractions for all ages and interests, like forts rich in naval history, shops, museums, zoos, art, and theme parks. Why let the tourists have all the fun? Consider some of the benefits of staying close to home for your vacation — your staycation.
• Lower travel costs and no luggage restrictions.
• Shorter travel times mean you can take advantage of long weekends.
• Closer to home means you can enjoy a romantic break from children aging parents without worry.
• Easier to include your pets in your travels. When leaving your pet behind is not an option, find a pet-friendly resort like Island Paradise Cottages & Apartments of Madeira Beach. Bill and June Mohns purchased Island Paradise Cottages & Apartments in 2001 and proceeded to make much-needed repairs. They designed it to be adult, child, and dogfriendly. Interior and exterior renovations and a pool addition create accommodations of understated elegance with touches of home that are inviting and comfortable. Their invitation is extended to people from all over but especially to local families, college students, and active seniors. Island Paradise Cottages has had the honor of receiving the coveted White Glove award for the last 5 years. It is awarded to properties that receive a perfect housekeeping score of 100% during an annual inspection done by an outside company.
“We wanted to create an environment where guests feel like friends coming for a visit. We offer friendly warm touches like wine, welcoming gifts, and bottled water for returning customers and doggy bags for pet owners. The eight units may be booked for a minimum of three nights or extended stays. Lots of Floridians are taking their vacations near home,” shared owner June Mohns. “One guest we have, who lives about ten miles from here said to me, ‘The beach is so much relaxed and easy paced...and we don’t have to spend a lot getting there. We can bring Fido to your quiet resort… We simply cannot find more personalized attention - or better beaches anywhere!’”
“I love vacationing from home because it cuts down on travel costs and this helps save money I can spend on food and entertainment! Also, airline tickets are astronomical so it makes it even better to vacation from home! There are many fun things to do in the Tampa Bay area that we can take advantage of ... The Florida Aquarium ... Lowry Park Zoo ... Shows at Ruth Eckerd Hall & The Palladium ... Not to mention Disney and the great restaurants and shows that are in that area! Heavenly beaches like Redington & Clearwater are just minutes away! People fly from up north to visit us ... When Paradise is right here in our own back yard!”
My favorite part of a staycation is the ability to stay in a hotel and enjoy the amenities while being close to home in the event of a family emergency. My father is disabled, so I like to take advantage of the option of staying local. Whether I am driving one hour or several hours, I know I will be at my destination quickly and without the added expense of airfare or the discomfort of cramped airline seating. For me, it makes perfect sense. You can book last minute trips without the need of a passport and stop and sightsee along the way. Hasta la vista, baby! <

“ I enjoy vacationing close to home in Florida. I can choose from many beautiful places and don’t have to drive hundreds of miles!! One of my favorites is Island Paradise - a beautiful, private place with charming villas and apartments close to the beach. I prefer smaller, privately owned places because they often times are pet friendly. Island Paradise is dog friendly and it is very important for me! 66 - COCKTAIL HOUR
Barfly From Barn to Bar By Travis Joiner
TampaStyleMagazine.com
Š
> There is a change for the better in the food movement in the Central Florida area and I can already taste it. There has been a big crusade in our industry all over the country the last few years bringing local ingredients back to your neighborhood bars and restaurants. Some areas have been way ahead of the curve while others, like Central Florida, are playing catch up. I speak of the farm to table or farm to bar movement that most big cities have been experiencing for a while now. As the barfly I still believe there is a symbiosis between bar and restaurant. I like when a cocktail can pair up with the food that shares space on the menu that holds a fresh drink list. There is a core group of people leading this change and the examples below are just starting to scratch the surface of a wonderful movement.
There is a great group of chefs and bartenders in our area that focus on championing this exciting change in our community. They are working hard on getting like-minded people to share in this movement. Recently an event was at K Restaurant in Orlando that featured a great panel of our peers in our industry. Kevin Fonzo, the host panelist, is the owner and executive chef of K Restaurant. Kevin is a James Beard nominated chef who has a long history of supporting the use of local ingredients on his menu. We were also pleased to have Matthew Anderson sitting on the board. Matt is the founder/creative director of Enlightened Grain Spirits. He has been the driving force in creating and growing a company that brings fresh and locally harvested ingredients into the EG Spirits line. Joining them on
COCKTAIL HOUR - 67
the panel was local craft bartender and creator Kaitlin McGavock. Kaitlin uses local herbs to create various tinctures and bitters to be used behind the bar. Rounding out this list of visionaries was Nathan Clarke of Wondermade. Nathan is the co-founder of a company that invents a range of flavors that end up in a tasty cube of marshmallow goodness. Bourbon marshmallows are just one example of how Wondermade is crossing over that food/bar barrier. He might just be the evil genius we need in the lab. The panel was aided by Paul Johnsen who moderated this event and kept the discussion going down the right path. Paul is a local craft bartender who was chosen by GQ as one of the 50 most imaginative bartenders. I am proud to say he also sits on the board of the Orlando chapter of the United States Bartenders Guild as Vice-President. Having a group of knowledgeable people from various backgrounds in this industry makes for a great event, this was no exception. The hour-long conversation and debate covered quite a bit and honestly could have gone on for much longer. The back and forth from moderator and panelist covered ground from the local herbs sourced to make batched cocktails and house made bitters to the importance of teamwork from kitchen to bar. There is a great marriage between the ingredients used behind the bar and the food that is prepared at these restaurants. Kevin said, “A balance between one and the other is key,” when speaking on the balance between bar and kitchen food pairing. Whether it is pairing food with wine, beer or spirits there is a great deal to consider finding that balance. Seeing the true love of their respected crafts being shown from
these panelists gives all hope for the trend for more local ingredients on our plates or in our glass. Central Florida is just now starting to understand and get out ahead of these trends. When Kaitlin was asked why do you love bitters and using it as a tool for your bar when creating cocktails? She responded, “A way to harness a flavor in one drop.” I recommend you go find her at The Courtesy downtown and ask her about her strawberry bitters, which highlight locally sourced fruit. You could really tell how proud Matt from EG spirits is to be using locally harvested herbs nearby their Portland, Distillery. What started as an idea in Winter Park has turned into a spirit company that features rosemary, lavender and sage with plans for more on the way. While Nathan uses more chemistry than most on the panel his passion results in a product that gives us a delicate flavor and sweetness. His marshmallows show how those flavors found behind most bars can be eaten tableside in a small bite of sugary goodness. I urge you to check out the Guinness marshmallow they offer on their website. I for one can already see that Irish whisky sitting proudly next to a few of these tasty bites. The event ended in an open forum for questions and it was encouraging to see the amount of locals who showed up and took a part in this panel. These people had a great curiosity in the farm to bar movement and showed genuine interest in highlighting this in our community. I look forward to seeing more of these open panel type events that shows and teaches us about the trends in our own backyard and strongly recommend you join in. From Kevin making homemade cherry rosemary soda to Kaitlin coming
up with that next locally sourced herb or fruit for her next batch of bitters, I am proud to live in an area that is finally “getting it.” We are surrounded by talented people in this industry who want to tinker and play to find out what works best while using locally sourced ingredients. Whether you are on the restaurant and bar side of the industry or have a local farm that grows these ingredients to bring to market, we all can benefit. I wanted to personally thank all who made it possible to showcase the talent and creative minds we have in our own backyard. Wherever you live, this farm to table/bar movement is something to seek out and take advantage of. From the chef who hits the farmers market at the crack of dawn to find that perfect ingredient to showcase that night’s special to the bartender who is tinkering with that perfect balance of flavors to add to the featured drink of the evening, we the locals are the one who benefit. With the changing of the season among us it is worth it to find which bars and restaurants are highlighting the flavors of fall. So remember wherever you are to find your local purveyor, restaurant chef, mad genius or bartender that is featuring local ingredients from your own backyard and say Thank You. <

SHARPENING BENTLEY’S SPORTING EDGE The Continental GT V8 S Range
> The appeal of the world’s most stylish, luxury grand tourer is enhanced with the introduction of the new, sporting Continental GT V8 S. Available as both a coupe and convertible, the new GT V8 S models bring added excitement to the Continental range with lowered and retuned sports suspension, sharper steering, dramatic ‘S’ signature styling cues and a distinctive soundtrack from the uprated V8 engine.
mance, generous space, handcrafted luxury and all-wheel drive capability take you on a journey in refined style and comfort. Now, for those customers who want even more drama and excitement, the sharper, sporting edge of the new GT V8 S adds a new dimension to the Continental range.”
These two new models expand the Continental family and provide an even more engaging driving experience from Bentley’s already renowned 4-litre twin-turbo V8 powertrain. The new Continental GT V8 S Coupe and Convertible will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Show on 10th September, 2013.
Building on the success of the acclaimed Continental GT V8, the new GT V8 S models feature a more powerful version of Bentley’s high-efficiency 4-litre, twinturbo V8 engine developing 521 bhp (528 PS / 389 KW) at 6,000 rev/min and an immense peak torque of 680 Nm (502 lb.ft) at a mere 1,700 rev/min.
Commenting on the introduction of the two new S models, Dr Wolfgang Schreiber, Chairman and Chief Executive, Bentley Motors, said:
Delivered via a close-ratio ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, the increased power provides effortless, exhilarating high performance with breath-taking acceleration and imperceptibly smooth power delivery. Switch into S mode via the gear selector and the V8 S rewards

the spirited driver with a sharpened throttle response while gears are held for longer with faster shifts. The GT V8 S coupe dispatches the 0-60 mph sprint in just 4.3 seconds (0-100 km/h in 4.5s) onto a top speed of 192 mph (309 km/h). The performance of the GT V8 S convertible is equally impressive, reaching 60 mph from a standing start in 4.5 seconds (0-100km/h in 4.7s) and a top speed of 191mph (308km/h). The increased performance is achieved without detriment to the V8 engine’s class-leading fuel economy and CO2 emissions, or its ability to cover more than 500 miles (805 km) between fill-ups. The new GT V8 S coupe returns a combined cycle fuel economy of 26.8 mpg (10.6 l/100km) and CO2 emissions of 246 g/km. The equivalent figures for the convertible are 25.9 mpg (10.9 l/100km) and 254 g/km. This impressive combination of power, performance and economy is the result of an array of advanced technologies
employed in the design of the Bentley V8 engine. Variable displacement, in which four of the eight cylinders shut down when cruising, reduces fuel consumption without any loss of refinement. When more power is required, the engine switches back automatically and seamlessly to the full eight cylinders. The high-technology V8 engine also features high pressure direct injection, low friction bearings, advanced thermal management, energy recuperation via the electrical charging system and innovative turbocharger packaging for greater efficiency. The V8 engine’s variable displacement system presented a unique challenge for Bentley exhaust engineers. When cruising on a light throttle in 4-cylinder mode, the exhaust system is tuned for refinement while maintaining a distinctive V8 sound. However, under acceleration the character of the system changes dramatically as the twin turbo-charged Bentley V8 transforms into an emotive growl.
Customers may tailor the specification of the GT V8 S by selecting from a range of optional equipment. The sports exhaust option features redesigned silencers, revised pipe architecture and re-tuned mountings which result in a free-breathing system that delivers a full-blooded V8 sound track. The optional Mulliner Driving Specification features 21-inch 7-spoke Black Edition wheels, drilled alloy foot pedals, a ‘jewel’ filler cap and a cabin trimmed in diamond-quilted, perforated leather with indented headlining. Other key options include Mulliner dark - tint front and rear lights and Beluga gloss door mirrors to match the Lower Body Styling Specification. Deliveries of the new Continental V8 S start in early 2014. <

provided by Pepin Distributing, will feature 20 different brands. The fundraiser takes place Nov. 16, from 5-10 p.m. Event Coordinator Ashley Derrick says that planning for Smoke on the River is a lengthy process. Those involved with planning the event begin months, sometimes even a year in advance in order to work out the dates and important details. “We fill out permits and paperwork for the City of Tampa, develop marketing materials, solicit sponsorship and finally develop logistics for event day,” Derrick said. “It’s a lot of organization, but it’s incredibly rewarding to see everything come together on event day.”
THE COOK-OFF Guests are encouraged to show off their best efforts and to participate in the Chili Cook Off. The Cook Off entails team[s] make 10 gallons of chili for judges and event guests. All qualifying chili teams will receive a $200 gift card, or a check to help with the cost of chili and ingredients. This truck will feature plenty of smooth-talking beverages, such as protein shakes and flavored shakes. Oreo Glory is a must-have, with its creamy, chocolaty taste, mirroring the famous cookie. Other flavors include Banana Man, Mudslide and Mango Lemonade.

Whether you come to satisfy your hunger, enjoy local music, or show off your chili-cooking skills, Smoke on the River is sure to be a good time. “The thing I always look forward to most when planning events is seeing the Tampa community enjoy and appreciate something that we’ve worked so hard on,” Derrick said. “It hopefully adds a little fun and happiness to their life, even if it’s just for the night.” Don’t miss this scrumptious opportunity to indulge in great food, music and company, Tampa style! < Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park 600 North Ashley Drive Tampa, FL 33602 813-251-3378 smokeontheriver.org

JAMES BLUNT He’s reached for the stars and now it’s time for Moon Landing, Blunt’s latest—and possibly final—studio album. By Riesa Pascal
> His number one hit may have been “You’re Beautiful,” but one look at this Brit’s piercing blue eyes, defined jaw line and soft lips have many women throwing the words right back at him. His charming smile and hauntingly beautiful vocals don’t hurt either! James Hillier Blount, better known by his stage name James Blunt, is the English singer-songwriter who rose to fame in 2005 with his debut album Back to Bedlam. The widely acclaimed album topped the charts of over ten countries, as well as reaching number two in the United States and three other countries. The album sold 11 million copies worldwide and boasts the highest-selling album of 2005 in the UK with almost 2.4 million copies sold. It was also the best-selling album of the 2000s decade in the UK with 3.2 million copies sold.
‘What it allowed me to do was go on tour with a band,” says Blunt. That was absolutely amazing, and so I recorded our second album, All The Lost Souls, with that band, and made a deeper, richer album. Then I recorded the third album, Some Kind Of Trouble, in the UK with lots of musicians and a fancy studio, and enjoyed making a more upbeat album. I picked up an electric guitar and did the kind of songs that I’d heard as a teenager but couldn’t replicate on my acoustic. It was fun playing catch-up, exploring all the things I wanted to do and be - all the other musicians I wanted to sound like.’ “You’re Beautiful” is without a doubt Blunt’s biggest hit to date, but reaching an incredible career peak at just 31 years old didn’t slow him down for one second. “Cry” and “Goodbye My Lover” were
two more hit singles released off Back To Bedlam. He followed that up with two additional albums, three world tours, four number one singles, five Grammy nominations, a six-piece band and seven whole years on the road. What does all that equal? A whole lot of success! In just a few short years, Blunt has sold nearly 17 million albums and 20 million singles worldwide. His official Facebook fan page has over five million ‘likes’ and his total YouTube views have surpassed an impressive 257 million. I think it’s safe to assume from those numbers that the announcement of Blunt’s fourth studio album has come as a happy surprise to many. Moon Landing was released on October 18th and is Blunt’s first new material in three years. The album is a follow up to 2010’s Some Kind of Trouble. On his fan

page, Blunt simply states: ‘Moon Landing is my 4th album. Possibly my last. Definitely my best.’ “There’s just something romantic, oldschool and lonely about the moon landings,” says Blunt. “A nostalgic memory of something huge that we can hardly believe we once achieved, and for some sad reason, can’t achieve again – like first love.” To Blunt’s loyal fans and long-time listeners, he must surely comes across as the hopeless romantic, but you might be surprised to know what else has gone on behind those baby blue eyes. Unbeknownst to many, Blunt was a former Army officer before he was discovered as an artist. Although he signed up for four years in 1996, Blunt ended up serving six total years in Canada, Kosovo and then London. During that time, Blunt never forgot his ultimate dream and continued to work on demos and music—even tak-
ing his guitar to the war in Kosovo. In 2002, Blunt finally left the British army in order to pursue that dream music career. After only a few minor letdowns, Blunt was spotted playing at the South by Southwest Music Festival and the rest is history. Despite trading in a rifle for a guitar, today Blunt is very active in charitable causes benefiting those in the service. He has helped support and raise funds for Médecins Sans Frontières, Help For Heroes, several environmental causes and more. He is truly an incredible musician and kind-hearted young man. All the ingredients necessary to have reached this success that Blunt is so deserving of. “In my teens, I found freedom in music. It’s a way of dreaming, a way to express who you are to the audience, but just as importantly, to yourself. It has taken me a while to understand it, to feel it again and start dreaming again.”
Moon Landing has been described as a collection of songs that are raw and emotionally honest. There are songs of self-examination such as “Always Hate Me” and “The Only One.” There’s “Miss America” which is a song inspired by the sudden death of Whitney Houston and the way fame makes us feel like we know celebrities personally. There are even the deep and unashamed declarations of love from “Postcards,” “Blue On Blue” and “Face The Sun.” The first single off the album is “Bonfire Heart” and serves as a lovely introduction back to this artist that millions across the world have come to know and love. It’s no surprise Moon Landing has already created a heavy buzz as fans of all ages prepare for what might possibly be Blunt’s final studio album. The English boy, who picked up a guitar and wrote his first song at 14, always dreaming of making music, has certainly come a long way. Be sure to pick up your own copy of Moon Landing today. <

BANKS ARE UNCLE SAM’S WATCHDOGS - BY MARK L. HORWITZ

> U.S. banks are required to keep records of all account transactions and provide their customers’ records to federal law enforcement under the Bank Secrecy Act. A bank must also file Currency Transaction Reports (CTR) anytime it receives or gives out over $10,000 in currency. The government also requires banks to file “Suspicious Activity Reports” when the bank believes that a customer’s deposit is suspicious. The definition of suspicious is not precise. I represented a small business owner who deposited between $9,000 - $9,700 in currency on numerous occasions. The bank filed over 60 Suspicious Activity Reports over a two-year period. As a result, the person’s business and home were searched by several gun toting agents under the mistaken belief that the person was a drug dealer.
Many people would rather not have their bank file a CTR and so divide up deposits to avoid the bank filing a CTR. What is not commonly known, however, is that this is a serious federal crime that is punishable by imprisonment and subjects the bank account to forfeiture. A person can be convicted of illegally structuring a currency deposit if the government proves that the person knew that by dividing a deposit the CTR would not be filed. The government does not have to prove that the bank customer knew that it was illegal to divide the deposit. The government should require banks to post a notice so that customers will be informed of the law and not commit a serious felony due to ignorance. <

OIL PAINTERS OF AMERICA PAINT OUT Painters and art admirers alike, you won’t want to miss this year ’s 9th Annual Oil Painters of America Paint Out! By Kelly Lamano
> The Paint Out is a way for artists to express their creative freedoms and meet with other artists. Created by the Oil Painters of America, the organization travels to twenty-one different locations in the U.S. for the Paint Out. The OPA was founded in 1991. Shirl Smithson founded the organization to highlight representational art. It was brought to Smithson’s attention that colleges and universities scarcely taught about representational oil painting. By founding the OPA, she wanted people to appreciate the medium again. The organization’s main focus is on color, composition, fine drawing and the appreciation of light, which are displayed through educational programs and national shows. According to the OPA website, the non-profit organization’s mission is to “preserve and promote excellence in representational

art.” It is the first national organization to be founded for the main purpose of stressing the importance of traditional, representational oil painters. The organization strives to give the craft a revival through its seminars and workshops. The OPA is widespread, representing more than 3,400 artists located in the U.S., Mexico and Canada. Its headquarters are located in Crystal Lake, Ill. Artists are encouraged to become members in order to attend workshops and seminars, as well as to better themselves as artists. Members are required to submit digital images of their work with the oil medium. The nationally recognized organization also offers four $500 scholarships, named after Smithson. Three of the scholarships are awarded to OPA members, and one scholarship is dedi-
cated to a part or full-time student who is enrolled in art school. There are plenty of artistic opportunities inside the Santaella Studios for the Arts. However, the Paint Out will take place right outside ‘en plein air’, which is French for ‘in the open air’. The Santaella Studios was once known as the West Tampa Center for the Arts. The red brick building is located in a cigar factory, which was the largest in the world back in 1904. Famous guests such as Babe Ruth and Winston Churchill were among the many whose cigars were rolled right in the factory. The event will make a stop in Tampa on Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Santaella Studios for the Arts. The Torpedo Factory Art Center inspired the idea for a combined studio and exhibition space. The Art Center is located in

Alexandria, Va., which was originally a torpedo factory and munitions storage site and now contains more than 82 artists’ studios. Similar to the Art Center, the Santaella is home to more than forty studios and two galleries. The Paint Out has been around since 2005. The annual event allows artists to participate in an outdoor paint exhibition. A member of the OPA hosts each city’s Paint Out. Kerry Vosler will host Tampa’s event. Vosler is a plein air painter, portrait and figurative artist. According to Vosler’s website, she has been the Florida Ambassador for the Portrait Society of America for as long as the Paint Out has been around. The Kerry Vosler Studio & Atelier is located right next to the Santaella Studios for the Arts in suite 210. The studio offers
classes and workshops. Coffee and water will be served to quench your thirst, or caffeine cravings, at the Kerry Vosler Studio & Atelier inside the Santaella Cigar Factory. You’ll be able to witness the paint dripping right off the palette, and watch as the art comes to life. Thousands of artists will congregate at the beautiful parks and sidewalks near the Santaella Studios to paint their masterpieces right before your very eyes. It is encouraged that you bring your own lunch to this outdoor adventure, or stop by one of the nearby cafes. Admission to the Paint Out is free, so don’t let the heat keep you from attending. Slap on some sunscreen, bring a pair of shades and don’t for-
get your artistic spirit. Oil Painters of America Paint Out takes place Nov. 16, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. < Santaella Studios for the Arts 1906 North Armenia, Suite 208 Tampa, FL 813-417-5867 oilpaintersofamerica.com

FOUR-LEGGED
LUXURY The 6 Most Luxurious Dogs By Maria Alejandra
> With thousands of breeds to choose from, finding a dog that represents your style and status can be quite an expensive effort. From playful and friendly to silky-haired and intelligent, luxurious dogs can be worth more than their sought-after traits... thousands more. Here are the top 6 most luxurious dogs in the world that really put the phrase “in the lap of luxury into perspective.
6: LOWCHEN The Lowchen, a toy breed originating from medieval Germany and France is widely known as one of the rarest dogs in the world. There are less than a few hundred Lowchen dogs registered each year worldwide. The breed has a history as a companion dog to the wealthy and elite, as it has been spotted in numerous forms of art and literature dating back to the mid1400. Known for its friendly and social personality traits, the breed is also very intelligent. The Lowchen is perfect for those with allergies, as it does not shed and is considered hypoallergenic. Its rarity, personality, and low-maintenance coat lands the Lowchen the #6 spot for most luxurious dogs in the world and can be priced anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000.
5: OLD ENGLISH BULL DOG The Old English Bulldog is known for being very friendly, confident, and courageous. It is a fairly new breed of dog, developed in the 1970s as a gentler version of the original bull dog. The English Bull Dog is eager to please and known to overexert itself in an effort to do whatever is asked. It has a great ability to stay in excellent shape with only light exercise and is expected to live a long, healthy life. The Old English Bulldog lands on our list at #5 and can be purchased for just over $9,000.

4: SAMOYED Known for their friendly disposition, the Samoyed (nicknamed “smiley dog”) is one of the friendliest dog breeds in the world. They make excellent house dogs, as they are great with children and even other dogs. Their friendly persona makes them poor guard dogs, which makes them perfect for domesticity, as aggression in the breed is rare. This breed remains a playful dog well into old age and has the energy of its reindeer herding ancestors. Coming in at #4 on the list, a beautiful Samoyed will run you anywhere from $4,000 - $11,000.
3: CAVELIER KING CHARLES SPANIEL Known as one of the most popular dogs in the United Kingdom, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a highly affectionate, patient, and eager to please pooch. It adapts quickly to almost any environment, family, and location and is great as an indoor dog, with an instinct to chase anything that moves. The Cavalier’s regal appearance and popularity land it the #3 spot on the list and have been known to reach $14,000 in price, although it is still possible to find one for just a few grand depending on where you live in the world.
2: GERMAN SHEPHERD One of the most recognized dogs in the world, the German Shepard is highly popular in the United States, coming in second place as most popular dog. Known for its intelligence, it is not uncommon to see a German Shepard in many different lines of work. Its strength, intelligence, obedience, and trainability make it perfect for search-and-rescue missions, police work, acting, and even guidance for the visually impaired. The German Shepherd is a large dog, so it is recommend for people with a sizable home and preferably children over the age of 10. The Average German Shepherd can run you anywhere from $3,000 - $24,000 dollars but have been sold in the past for a whopping $230,000, a price making it #2 on our list of most luxurious dogs.
1: TIBETIN MASTIFF The Tibetan Mastiff is an ancient and unique breed. Owning a Tibetan Mastiff requires plenty of space for your canine friend, as it is classified as a nocturnal breed of dog. The Tibetan rests most of the day, leaving energy to protect you and your family at night while you sleep. It is giant in size and has a thick, fluffy coat, which, surprisingly enough, lacks that “big dog” smell. As of 2011, a red Tibetan Mastiff by the name of “Big Splash” was labeled the most expensive dog ever purchased, selling in China for $1.5 million and making the Tibetan Mastiff our #1 most luxurious breed! And of course there is the “Mutt,” that are usually very healthy, intelligent, protective, loving and oh so cute! And in our book they are priceless! <

SERVES: 4 CUISINE: MEDITERRANEAN You will not get anything fresher, tastier and healthier than this recipe! It is original and incredibly easy to prepare. A simple and wonderful surprise for guests at your next dinner party.
INGREDIENTS 4 Portobello Mushrooms 1 bunch fresh Arugula Eliunt Vitality Extra Virgin Olive Oil 4 Garlic Cloves 2 Lemons 3.5 oz shaved Parmesan Cheese A few leaves of fresh Mint, fresh Parsley and dry Oregano Chili flakes to taste (optional)
PREPARATION Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Peel the Portobello mushrooms and cut away the stem (you can use them for stock for other dishes). Chop the garlic finely and put it on top of the mushrooms. Add the chili flakes to your taste. Place the mushrooms in the oven for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, for the dressing preparation, squeeze the juice of 2 lemons. Finely chop the oregano, parsley and fresh mint and add to the lemon juice. Finish the dressing with a pinch of salt and pepper. Once the mushrooms are ready, take them out of the oven and let them cool for 5 minutes. Once they are cool, turn them bottom up and top them with the arugula and add the dressing and shaved Parmesan. To finish this dish and give it the final golden touch, we recommend Eliunt Vitality Olive Oil from Australia. Vitality is a smooth and aromatic Extra Virgin Olive Oil ideal for salads. It has hints of artichoke, grass and herbs that will enhance your salad flavors.< OrlandoStyleMagazine.com
