12 - PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers, > Judging by the Florida heat that’s sneaking in upon us, it is safe to say that summer is finally here! The sun is shining brighter, and so is our economy, which is picking up even more just in time for the summer months. The housing market is on the rise, and our local businesses seem to be blooming more beautifully than ever. Now that June has arrived, there will be plenty of sun-soaked activities to keep us outside in the hot weather. Summer is a great time to enjoy all of the beauty of Tampa Bay, so why not spend the day at one of the city’s relaxing beaches? Perhaps even visit a park or partake in one of your favorite sports with your friends. For those of you who have been following the World Cup action from Brazil, which team is your favorite? Send us an email at info@ StyleToMe.com. We’d love to hear from you! As [you] soccer fans probably know, sports have always been one of the top professions that enable men to feel accepted, confident, and worthy of praise, but athletes seem to be the only men in popular culture who are portrayed in a positive light. With this in mind, I would like take the opportunity to voice my opinion in regards to how television and media represent men. Far too many reality shows and sitcoms have created the illusion that most men are dummies or deadbeat dads, but we know that this is nowhere near the truth.

Issue is filled with great suggestions on how to update your work wardrobe, as well as advice on how to define your own take on men’s fashion. For even more style insight, be sure to check out our photo editorial, “Men of Style.” Although this June publication specializes in the lifestyle of the Florida male, it also contains fabulous articles for both men and women. As we do for every magazine issue, we have strived to craft this month’s installment in such a way that it surpasses the quality and content of each preceding release. This labor of love requires total dedication each and every day. Tampa Style is always at the top of the charts when it comes to being the most loved, read and respected magazine in the city, we know that our readers are living proof of our recognized popularity. We are so thankful for your effort to show your dedication and continued support for Tampa Style Magazine. You can help strengthen our passion to keep producing this high quality, fulfilling and satisfying product by encouraging your friends and acquaintances to join our list of growing ‘family’ members by subscribing to our magazine. Simply go to our website, www.TampaStyleMagazine.com and click “subscribe!” Happy Father’s Day! Sincerely,

With all of the advertisements and commercials claiming that men are generally nothing more than incompetent womanizers and apathetic slobs who possess very few redeeming qualities, I think it is about time to start changing the image of the modern man. We know that the Tampa Bay Area is full of elite, successful men with the style to match, and this June edition of Tampa Style Magazine is a celebration of those sophisticated men that are still around. In this issue of Tampa Style, men of the city unite to prove that all men have not only a worthy purpose, but also a sense of style and fashion to express that purpose. The Men’s

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Style Events, News & Gossip from Around the City By Michelle Collins

Foster The People

> Flowers weren’t the only things blooming this month in Tampa; the social scene for May was kicked into high gear and residents had plenty of events to choose from! Some of the biggest names in Hollywood took trips to Tampa this month, putting the Bay on the map for one of the hottest places to be. May was kicked off with quite possibly the hottest music event Tampa has seen all year: The annual Big Guava Music Festival. Performers like Outkast, Vampire Weekend, Foster The People, Sleigh Bells, Slightly Stoopid, Haim, Girl Talk, and Violent Femmes rolled into Tampa and gave concertgoers everything they could have wanted in a music festival. The weekend of May 2-4, the Florida State Fairgrounds were taken over by bathing suits, floral headbands, band tees, and unfortunately, a bit of rain. The Friday and Saturday showers didn’t stop fans from coming out in the thousands though, and by Sunday the weather was back to Tampa’s ideal conditions. Big Guava didn’t disappoint and Tampa residents were feeling especially lucky that so many sought after acts came to the Bay. If you missed out this time around, keep your schedule open for next year’s event!

TampaStyleMagazine.com

Comedian, author, talk show host, and overall superstar Chelsea Handler made Tampa one of her stops on her national stand-up comedy tour, “Uganda Be Kidding Me Live.” Handler hit the stage on May 9th at Ruth Eckerd Hall with opening act Ben Gleib. Gleib is a regular table guest on Handler’s widely popular E! late night talk show, Chelsea Lately. The tour was to promote Handler’s newest tongue-and-cheek book, Uganda Be Kidding Me. The book covers some of Handler’s favorite personal travel stories and advice to some of the most asked travel questions, while obviously being a hysterical read at the same time. The outspoken comedian had the Tampa crowd doubled over laughing and sometimes left them with their jaws dropped from her rather blunt jokes, making the night everything the crowd expected from a Chelsea Handler stand-up event. Quite possibly the most awaited event of the month for Tampa country fans was Zac Brown Band’s “Great American Road Trip Tour.” The American country/ folk band has had 10 of their songs listed as number 1 on the Billboard Top 100, so it’s no surprise that Tampa residents came out in the thousands to this highly coveted event. Not only did fans get one

night of this six-member band’s musical talents, but the boys performed in the Bay two nights in a roll on May 29th and 30th. The MidFlorida Credit Union Amphitheatre was the place to be at the end of the month and the energy of the place was contagious. The venue was filled with fans boppin’ along to tunes like “Chicken Fried,” “Knee Deep,” and “Toes,” to name a few. < Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell! TampaStyleMagazine.com

GEORGE CLOONEY, BACHELOR NO MORE! IT WAS “BEAUTY AND BRAINS” THAT TAMED HOLLYWOOD’S SILVER FOX By Maria Delis

> “I gave it a shot,” George Clooney said in a 2011 interview with Piers Morgan. “Yeah, so I’ve proven how good I was at it, and I just … I’m allowed one.” He spoke of marriage, his first marriage. Clooney and Talia Balsam dated in the early eighties, but the New York born actress broke off the relationship. They ended up getting back together and walking down a Vegas aisle in 1989. Four years later, the couple divorced.

Talia Balsam, who has had roles in “Happy Days,” “Family Ties,” “Mad Men” and “Homeland,” married John Slattery (Roger Sterling on “Mad Men”) in 1998. Clooney, on the other hand, chose the bachelor life. Beautiful actresses, models and waitresses dated the striking, handsome actor, yet all relationships eventually ended. Who would ever manage to tame this Hollywood silver fox?

THE BIGGEST MISTAKE MEN MAKE WHEN BUYING A SUIT by ASHLEY LUTZ

“They don’t do enough research,” said McGregor Madden, a trained tailor who founded men’s apparel businesses Proper Suit and Hall & Madden.Madden said that not knowing all the options can result in paying too much for a suit that ends up looking cheap and wearing out quickly. Men are often intimidated by “inept and pushy salesman” and buy the first thing that comes along, he said. But it’s important to do research to find the right suit. “A business suit is an investment piece that will project the image you want to make in a professional setting,” said Madden.

“Go around and check out high-end, low-end and medium-end stores and try on a variety of suits.” “Don’t be intimated, it’s not until you feel quality that you will know quality,” he said. “Knowing what’s out there will help you to make a decision you’re happy with.” He also encouraged men to get their suits tailored by a professional. “At the end of the day you are getting a garment not made for you that will need extensive tailoring services to ensure a proper fit,” said Madden. “Your tailor may be your best friend.”

“As exclusive as it gets – the ultimate in aesthetic sportiness”, stresses Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars. “The breathtaking design of the Concept S-Class Coupé marked by sporty-classic proportions and sensual purity is transferred to the series-production S-Class Coupé virtually unaltered. The large coupé has always been the supreme pinnacle of our model range and that’s why it’s now called the “S-Class” again.” MAGIC BODY CONTROL, the first “suspension with eyes”, had its world première in the S-Class. With the curve tilting function the Coupé introduces a

further world first for series-production cars: The Coupé leans into bends in a manner similar to a motorcyclist or skier. The lateral acceleration acting upon occupants is reduced in a way akin to when driving in a steep curve, and passengers sit more firmly. On country roads in particular, the new curve tilting function enhances motoring enjoyment and comfort. Like the S-Class Saloon, the new Coupé is available with numerous new assistance systems that make driving even more comfortable and safer. The “Intelligent Drive” systems include, among other things the PRE-SAFE® brake with pedestrian detection, DISTRONIC PLUS

COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS features an additional function apart from the adaptive brake assistant, which provides collision protection from a speed of 7 km/h: if there remains a danger of collision and the driver fails to respond, the system can carry out an autonomous braking manoeuvre at speeds of up to 105 km/h, thereby reducing the severity of collisions with slower or stopping vehicles. The system also brakes in response to stationary vehicles at a speed of up to 50 km/h, and is able to prevent rear-end collisions at up to 40 km/h.

Sensual purity as an expression of modern luxury – this was the focus for the designers, and is the design philosophy of Mercedes-Benz. The aim is to create clear contours and smooth surfaces that showcase high tech while radiating emotional appeal. The sensual purity is reflected in the core design values of tradition, emotion and progressivism. These make up the guiding star, and are accentuated differently depending on the model. Mercedes-Benz creates a bridge between modernity and the avant-garde, between tradition and progressivism. Each model series has an assigned role and a very specific character, depending on the attributes on which the design focuses. And yet a Mercedes-Benz is always recognisable

as a Mercedes-Benz. Because in addition to incorporating new stylistic developments, and in the interests of keeping tradition alive, the designers draw from a gene-pool of styling features typical of the brand. “Our new S-Class Coupé is one of the most gorgeous coupés of all times, representing the most radical aesthetic departure from its predecessor,” says Gorden Wagener, Vice President Daimler AG. “The sensuous flowing silhouette in interplay with the clear progressive design language forms a perfect symbiosis and expresses our philosophy of sensual purity with pithy precision.”<

BEST of 2014...

...

so far!

WHICH OF YOUR FAVORITE CELEBS IS READY TO POP CHAMPAGNE AND WHO WANTS TO CRAWL UNDER A ROCK UNTIL THE SWEET RELIEF OF 2015? By Riesa Pascal

> We’re about halfway through 2014 and the celebrity world has already had its fair share of headlining entertainment news, juicy gossip reports and shocking revelations. There’s still six months left before NYC drops that ball again, but we wondered… which celeb is having the best 2014 and who’s ready to throw in the towel?

THE BEST: BEYONCÉ There are mainly two types of people in this world: Those who love Beyoncé and those who probably think she’s the most overexposed celeb since Kim Kardashian. Whether you fall in the category of adoring fan or couldn’t care less, one can hardly deny that her 2014 is going spectacularly well. She entered the year riding high on the unparalleled success of her self-titled album, Beyoncé. The album shocked the music industry when it was suddenly and exclusively released for iTunes on December 13th with no prior promotions. Selling over 820,000 downloads in just three days, it became the fastest-selling album ever in iTunes history, the highest debut-week sales of Knowles solo career and of any female artist in 2013. At the end of March, Knowles wrapped up The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour and just one month later, announced her On The Run Tour. If you haven’t already heard—and who hasn’t!—the On the Run Tour is the upcoming co-headlining stadium tour featuring Knowles and her husband, rapper Jay-Z. The tour kicks off this month in Miami and is already expected to earn the power couple millions. To top it all off, Time magazine just released their issue of the 100 Most Influential People and who graced the cover? None other than Miss. Sasha Fierce herself, proving the unfathomable outreach of her power and sealing our #1 spot for celeb who’s having the best 2014. Beyonce is clearly the leader and we’re sure she expects nothing less than the best for the second half of her awesome 2014.

RUNNER-UP: PHARRELL WILLIAMS The “Happy” singer has many reasons to be happy for the first half of his 2014. On March 31st, Pharrell Williams, more commonly known as simply Pharrell, was announced as a new coach for the seventh season of The Voice, replacing Cee Lo Green. This year he was nominated for seven Grammys, won the iHeart Innovator award at the iHeartRadio Music Awards, and as I write this, currently holds the Billboard Hot 100’s #1 spot for the tenth week in a row with “Happy.” Shortly before the mega hit’s success, Pharrell became the 12th artist in the chart’s history to simultaneously hold the number one and two positions with “Blurred Lines” and “Get Lucky,” songs which you still can’t turn on the radio without hearing and unashamedly singing along with. Known for his sincere humbleness, we can’t help but love the 41-year-old singer and we hope the rest of his 2014 is just as ‘happy’ as what he’s experienced thus far.

THE WORST: Unless you live under a pop-culture-proof rock, this one doesn’t need too much of an opening as you can’t turn your head without seeing another of Justin Bieber’s antics being covered. From vandalism and drugs to embarrassing public spectacles and other shenanigans, I think we can all come to a unanimous decision that Bieber is undeniably having the worst 2014. It started on January 9th, when Bieber became the subject of an egg throwing-investigation in his home state of California. According to his neighbor, Bieber caused approximately $20,000 worth of vandalism damage from egg throwing, though he has not been charged. On January 23rd, Bieber was arrested in Miami Beach on suspicion of DUI, driving with an expired license and resisting arrest. A toxicology report revealed that Bieber had traces of marijuana and Xanax in his system at the time of his arrest. That same day, a petition to deport Bieber

JUSTIN BIEBER

and revoke his green card popped up on the White House’s We the People website. The petition received over 270,000 signatures and subsequently, an official White House response. Just a few days after the Miami arrest, Bieber surrendered to Toronto police who charged him with assaulting a limousine driver in Toronto on December 30, 2013. Bieber recently issued an apology “to anyone I have ever offended,” but I’m not sure if he realizes just how many people that may be. In addition to the legal troubles he faced in the United States within just the first MONTH of 2014, Bieber has also faced trouble and criticism for his behavior in Japan, Canada, The Netherlands, Poland, Turkey, Germany, Brazil and Australia. In addition to regularly abusing prescription pills, weed and alcohol, multiple sources close to the singer claim he has been downing the codeine-

based concoction known as sizzurp on the regular. Apparently his abuse of the drug was so bad that many friends encouraged him to go to rehab. Despite Bieber’s comparison of sizzurp to love in his lyrics for “We Were Born For This,” the popular drug was pulled from store shelves in April due to the volume of hip hop artist bragging about using the cough syrup inappropriately. Bieber seems far from slowing down on his downward spiral, but there’s still 6 months left to prove us wrong. Here’s hoping he can pick himself up, reclaim some form of dignity and earn back the respect and appreciation of his peers and fans. Oh, and there’s no clear runner-up for this category because when it comes to who’s having the worst 2014, Bieber is on a level all of his own. <

ELTON

JOHN An Icon of Legacy By Courtney Caggiano

StyleToMe.com

SIR

JOHN’S LIFE IS FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH NEW AND EXCITING ADVENTURES, FROM HIS 2014 SUMMER TOUR TO THE CHANGES IN HIS PERSONAL LIFE.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT - 47

> As one of the most popular recordbreaking artists of the 20th century, Sir Elton John has redefined what it means to be an icon, and he continues to revolutionize his iconic status today. From number one singles and sold-out stadiums to influential fashion statements and charitable endeavors, Elton John has truly become a worldwide cultural phenomenon. John has come a long way from his humble beginnings in London, England, where the restrictive environment of his parents’ home instilled within him a longing for creative expression. John’s parents were both musically inclined, however, and filled their home with the latest rock and roll records, which immediately lit a passionate fire in the heart of a young Elton. Although John’s parents supported his pursuit of musical success, he found at an early age that he would have to blaze his own trail in order to bring his nonconformist style to a very vibrant life. This trend of nonconformity is certainly a key element of John’s triumphant standing in the pop world, and looking back on his stellar performances, it is no wonder that his infectious hits have become groundbreaking moments in musical history. The release of “Your Song,” John’s first top ten single, transported the singer from the world of piano bars and songwriting contracts to radio domination and international fame. Although more talented than most of his contemporaries in the industry, John did not reach success merely because of his gift of composition and knack for the keys; it was John’s unique touch of originality that set his music on the course of global recognition.

Not only did John’s innovative rock ballads and catchy pop sing-a-longs make Elton John a household name, they also became an intrinsic part of popular culture that resonated within the lives of his listeners. For those who were fans of John in his prime, just a mention of any of his infamous hits can bring back memories of an era gone by, and for the younger members of his audience who have recently taken a fancy to his eccentric songs, an Elton John single translates the timelessness of his music. Elton John’s pop-rock standards never cease to unite the generation of the past with the youth of the current age, and his songs declare the inescapable truth that John is a lasting icon of both yesterday and today. Even his single, “Crocodile Rock,” is a testament to the fact that he truly is one of the few rock stars left who really can “remember when rock was young” while still having the ability to reign supreme with the pop stars of the present. Scheduled to tour this summer, John has continued his legacy of selling out arenas around the globe, a feat that few artists from the 1970s have had the relevance or popularity to attempt. Now, as 2014 celebrates the 40th anniversary of his chart-topping album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, John’s live shows are more highly anticipated than ever, and John is expected to bring his usually imaginative style to his performances as always, along with new twists to create a classic yet modernized music experience. Even though John has toned down his wardrobe of platform shoes and multicolored feathers that made him a style innovator, he has never lost any of his flair throughout the years.

Although his performances, hit records and accomplishments remain memorable aspects of his career, John’s charitable efforts are the achievements for which he most wants to be remembered. A devoted supporter of the AIDS Foundation, John founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992 to fund programs and raise awareness for those affected by the disease. Because of his contributions to this cause, John was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1998, and will forever be recognized as Sir Elton John. John’s life is filled to the brim with new and exciting adventures, from his 2014 summer tour to the changes in his personal life. After gay marriage was made legal in England and Wales, John announced that he and his partner David Furnish had made plans to marry. The two entered into a civil partnership in 2005 and are looking forward to taking this new step in life together. John and David are the parents to sons Zachary and Elijah, a commitment that John has found both humbling and inspiring. As a musical master, fashion trendsetter, and social individualist, Elton John has not only redefined the term “icon” but has also become its definition. With his unique taste and undeniable panache, it is true that his songs have transformed the pop genre, yet John is even bigger than his songs: he is his own anthem. Elton John lives as a cultural phenomenon personified, and his music is simply the expression of his iconic soul within.<

TESTOSTERONE: BIGGER MAY NOT

MEAN BETTER. By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law

> Hey guys, let’s admit it. Times have changed. Men are more focused now than ever on fashion, fitness and healthy living. Supplements, juicing and slim fit suits are all a part of the norm. So it may not surprise you that millions of men are prescribed testosterone for a variety of reasons. Shockingly, 25% of these men never underwent routine blood tests to check for hypogonadism, a disorder that causes testosterone deficiency and the only condition for which testosterone therapy is approved. Then why does it seem testosterone cures everything from fatigue to low sex drive to insomnia? Well, technically properly administered testosterone creates a balanced endocrine system, which promotes energy, sound sleep and a sharp mind. But the effects of improperly prescribed testosterone can be devastating to one’s health. Don’t believe it? Here are some sobering facts:

• In 2009, a trial study funded by the National Institute of Health was terminated due to the high rate of heart attacks in participants. • Lawsuits have been filed against manufacturers of Androgel and Testim for causing stroke in men. • In January 2014, the FDA announced it was investigating heart attacks, strokes and death in men using testosterone products. • The November 2013 Journal of the American Medical Association indicated that the cardiovascular risk outweighed the benefits. Not all is lost; studies of the drug are ongoing and hope to reveal a safe, effective way to benefit from testosterone therapy. The key here is to obtain a proper diagnosis and follow directions (no off the market muscle-building injections!). Testosterone is not a supplement and can permanently affect your body’s abil-

ity to produce its own. Make sure your doctor has conducted the proper blood tests before prescribing T, and if you feel you’ve been improperly prescribed, get a second, third or fourth opinion. More importantly, make sure to read the labels. The current “low T” litigation surrounds the apparent misrepresentation undertaken by pharmaceutical companies that fail to warn consumers about the increase in heart attacks, stroke or death. If you are currently using or have used testosterone in the past and have concerns or questions, call your doctor. No doubt the medical and legal industry is aware of these side effects, but for now the consumer needs to man up: demand proper blood work and ask all the hard questions! Your health depends on it.<

GET RIPPED QUICKER By Aubrie Blackton

> Many men lead such hectic lifestyles and would find it nearly impossible to squeeze one more activity

into their days. When that activity is going to the gym, forget it. Men may imagine setting aside a couple hours per day to go to the gym but this doesn’t have to be the case. You may be surprised how little time you need to bulk up and get the body you once had, or dreamed of having. The secret that can make this all possible is compound strength training. If you can reserve just 15 minutes per day, 5 days a week, you can do these exercises and get the results you’ve been wanting!

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

FITNESS - 51

Unlike isolation exercises that work only one muscle group at a time, compound exercises are multi-joint movements that work several muscles or muscle groups simultaneously. While isolation exercises will be less intensive, isn’t it always better to up your game and get the workout over with in half the time? These strength training exercises help make the most of your time in the gym and can increase your power, endurance, and muscle mass all while burning fat. These are 4 of the most popular and beneficial compound exercises that can all be done in 15 minutes. Do 3 sets of 10 reps for each exercise below.

1

Instead of doing sets of squats and sets of overhead presses, why not put the two together? Combine the two by standing with a light to medium weight bar over your head, feet under your hips, and ease into a squat. During this exercise it's important to keep your arms in a wide position and not too far behind your head while in the squat position.

Next, go onto the bench press. Bench press exercises target the pecs, shoulder, and arms but why not add something extra? Lie on a bench and take the bar with hands just a fist’s width apart. As you lift the bar up, bring your legs with you and raise them until they reach 90 degrees. Lower your arms and legs at the same time to give your abs a nice workout.

3

2

Work your quads, biceps, and abs with the next exercise, the squat to bicep curl. Stand with your feet hip’s width apart with dumb bells in each hand. Squat down, holding the dumbbells in by your side and as you stand up, curl them up to shoulder height.

One more left! Bend over so your back is nearly flat and knees slightly bent. Holding dumbbells in each hand, draw them up towards the sides of your chest. Lower, and repeat. This exercise will work your biceps, lats, and shoulders. As always, be sure to stretch after your workout.

4

COMPOUND EXERCISES WILL ALLOW YOU TO WORKOUT QUICKLY AND EFFECTIVELY, BURNING MORE CALORIES AND CREATING MORE MUSCLE THAN ISOLATION EXERCISES. REACHING YOUR FITNESS GOAL DOESN’T HAVE TO TAKE HOURS OUT OF YOUR DAY. SET ASIDE JUST 15 MINUTES PER DAY AND GET TO WORK! As always, check with your doctor before doing any new exercise regimen.

MOONSHINE IN THE Sunshine STATE By Travis Joiner

> It is on your local liquor store shelves, it carries big brand names on the front of the bottle, we even have television shows dedicated to the stuff. Moonshine has hit the mainstream and it is not looking back. There are different flavors and packages and even different sentiments on what truly moonshine is to be called “shine.” I am here to help clear up some of the myths and questions behind it.

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

I always thought moonshine was the stuff that your funny talking, live off the land uncle kept underneath the kitchen sink. So high in alcohol that he uses it to clean his hunting rifle in his downtime. Some of this might be true but there is more to moonshine than most realize. The term moonshine is believed to come to be as a result of when it was made. It is a basic spirit that is usually made from corn but grains are also used. The illegal practice of making it from homemade

stills in the woods usually happened at night so as not to be caught. It was and is made by “the light of the moon” and boom moonshine is born. It holds other names as well, such as white lightning, mountain dew or hooch. The only thing that made this usually high octane spirit is the moonshiners don’t pay federal tax. Instead they hide their stills deep in the woods and sell it in the cover of night hoping federal agents are always a step behind.

COCKTAIL HOUR - 53

Which brings us to why we see it now in stores and bars around the country. As most of you know as long as you pay the tax and set up with a third party distributor you are able to bring the previous illegal hooch to the public. This will really cut down on the sleepless nights and paranoia that your profession could soon place you in a comfy jail cell. This is why you are seeing some pretty big names getting into the “shine” game as a result of its popularity. Some of it might me marketing but most are working and successfully making some phenomenal stuff. I leave it to you to find your particular palette prefers. Another thing I heard growing up is that moonshine typically will have a flavor added to make it easier to drink. This one is true and it typically shows up in the form of peach, strawberry, blueberry and even apple pie. This is usually added in by the way of whatever local fruit you can get your hands on. I can say the apple pie shine is some good tasting stuff. Typically bottled in Mason jars or pickling jars the fruit is either strained out or left in the jar to ensure you know which flavor sits in front of you. There are often sugars added to help sustain the spirit and keep it from biting back when you tilt back the jar and take a swig. You will also notice that most of the choices you have in the store will hover around 100 proof rather than some crazy number like 190 proof like we were led to believe growing up. That is not to say that illegal stuff does not pack a wallop. Another thing you hear when you’re younger is that it can make you go blind. That would fall more into how it is made. Like any distillate the first liquid that comes up can hold a lot of impurities and pretty harmful stuff. That is why we distill our spirits and why most do not prefer to use that at all. The distiller will taste it now and again until they feel the purity and heart of their hard work shines through. I would be worried about what some of those backwoods stills are made out of. What did that evaporating coil come off of before it became part of your bootleg enterprise? Just saying there is a reason why we say buyer beware. I hope some of this helps and opens your eyes to some of the stories behind moonshine and what it is. Head to your local store or bar and see what flavor or style they have available and grab a bottle. I recommend either use them for a sipper or grab a dry cider and add it to your favorite white lightning for a pleasant twist. I even hear that there could be a shine that is rum based that might be within our grasps to try soon. Whatever the truths or the fun myths and stories behind this spirit of lore do not be afraid to give it a shot. It will not make you go blind but if you drink enough of it in the Florida sun you might be howling at the moon before you know it. Cheers <

A LAUNCH PARTY IN LONDON THE OFFICIAL CAMPAIGN KICKOFF EVENT FOR THE GRAND TOUR GALA 2014! By Riesa Pascal

> There’s a new way to visit London this November and you won’t even have to leave the state! I got a sneak preview of this journey on April 22nd when the Bistro Café of The Hilton Orlando Resort was transformed into the gorgeous city of London for the Grand Tour Gala 2014 Launch Party. The event was hosted by the Orlando Chapter of the National Association for Catering and Events (NACE) and they gave attendees an exciting glimpse of what to look forward to on November 1st at Grand Tour Gala 2014. NACE is the production arm of the annual Grand Tour Gala charity fundraiser, which honors Florida’s hospitality and tourism industry leaders. Proceeds from the annual event provide scholarships benefiting students at the University of Central Florida Rosen College of Hospitality Management, the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association Educational Foundation and the NACE Education Foundation. Since it’s inception

in 2011, more than $180,000 have been distributed in student scholarships, educational and hospitality fundraising programs. “We theme the Grand Tour Gala around locations such as London and then the guests travel through the experience of the city. We get to experience the sights, the sounds, the food and the entertainment. It really is an action packed event.” – NACE Orlando President, Patricia Buchanan The launch party proved to be a lovely evening as themed drinks, appetizers, strolling actors and décor all took me back to my city of birth. British Royal Guards stood on either side of the entrance, keeping watch over the party and making for great photo opportunities. An Austin Powers look-a-like mixed and mingled with the guests as everyone enjoyed complimentary drinks, delectable British bites and a live DJ’s mix of classic British music that kept the party going all night long. A photo booth by The Flipbook People was a huge hit with attendees who put on silly props and took fun photos, which were turned into a complimentary flipbook. During the event, nine student scholarships resulting from proceeds raised from last year’s event were presented to their recipients and the Dick Pope Legacy Award Honorees for Grand Tour Gala 2014 were announced. This year’s honorees include: Chef Emeril Lagasse, celebrity chef and host of TV’s Emeril’s Florida; Steve Hogan, CEO of Florida Citrus Sports; Richard Kessler, chairman and CEO of Kessler

Hotel Group; and Adrian Jones, general manager of Legoland Florida and VP Merlin Entertainment USA. “Those men are being focused on for their contributions to hospitality leadership for the state of Florida. This event is like the Oscars of the hospitality and tourism industry for not only Central Florida, but also for the state. Since the tourism industry is one of the largest contributors to the state economy, this is a way for us to celebrate all the people that are involved with it as well as to provide dollars to some of the programs and student scholarships.” – Dr. Mary Jo Ross, UCF professor and Executive Producer of The Grand Tour Gala From florist and caterers to linen providers and entertainers, the Grand Tour Gala is an event that couldn’t happen without the help of Central Florida’s hospitality community. At least 12-14 vendors took part in the campaign launch party and approximately 40-50 vendors will come together to put on November’s event. The benefit and the Grand Tour Gala’s mission are special to so many people and everybody wants to be a part of it. “At the end of every event, people just rave about how spectacular it was and I think theming it to a destination is huge and very unique, so we’re very excited about traveling to London.” – NACE Orlando President, Patricia Buchanan < For more information on the Grand Tour Gala 2014 annual benefit, be sure to check out www.grandtourgala.com.

> With the oncoming school graduations, proms, and weddings I get asked how do I whiten my teeth the least expensive and invasive way? There are many tooth whitening systems on the market that do not require altering the tooth structure. I use the Opalescence Whitening System in my office. Questions I have been asked by patients.

IS IT SAFE? Yes. The primary ingredient in Opalescence is carbamide peroxide, which has been safely used to brighten millions of smiles worldwide.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Patient above after whitening, orthodontics & periodontics treatment.

There are several methods that can be used however the one that I found works the best and is the least time consuming is the chair side whitening that is done in the office. It takes approximately 1 hour. The Opalescence gel is applied to the teeth. The carbamide gel oxidizes and enters the enamel. This process bleaches out the discolored areas. The tooth structure is NOT changed. The color of the tooth is simply made lighter.

with Opalescence gel in it and they will use this for 2-3 days after the chair side procedure to achieve optimum natural whiteness.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? There are a small number of people who may experience increased sensitivity to hot or cold during the whitening process. This is temporary and usually will go away within the first 48 hours after the whitening process is completed.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST? The duration of your results depends on many factors. Practice good oral hygiene, and brushing regularly;especially after consuming staining foods or beverages. If you use staining substances like coffee, tobacco, and red wine you may need periodic touch-ups. Honestly, everyone has had some degree of whitening and have not been disappointed in their results. There is no way we can predict how white your teeth will get. If you have a question about whitening procedures or products consult your dentist or feel free to give my office a call at 407 678-4000. <

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? Results are usually seen immediately .We then give the patient pre fabricated trays

> For those of you who are dog owners, you know that there’s nothing quite like a warm hug from a furry friend. After a stressful day at the office or a long weekend out of town, a cheerful greeting from your pet pooch is the perfect way to calm the emotions and soothe the soul. In order to bring this joy of puppy love to those in need, The American Kennel Club is supporting organizations all over the country that specialize in training Emotional Support Animals. Also known as Therapy Dogs or “Hug Dogs,” these canines are sent with volunteers to hospitals, nursing homes and childcare centers with the goal of lifting the spirits of people experiencing emotional and mental disorders.

RUSS CHIODO Chiodo Realty Group > Over the past decade real estate has been in a constant state of change. Brokerage firms and real estate agents have had to reevaluate their approach to support these changes. Homeowners were impacted by fluctuating home values and tight lending. Eviction, cash-for-keys, short-sale and REO (Real Estate Owned) became household words discussed by all socioeconomic classes. It was during this time that Russ became a licensed Realtor in Central Florida.

> Danyetta Tavares, a realtor of the past 10 years considers practicing Real Estate her second passion, with the first being a wife of many years to Dean Tavares and the mom of 4 grown sons Tareck, Tarell, Tyler Johnathan and Torrance Tavares. Danyetta credits her success in the industry to a strong work ethic, a teachable heart, and a desire to serve. I consider it the highest compliment when a client, friend or family member trusts me with their referral business. I start the transaction as an agent and most of the time, end as a family member. I realize the importance of treating each client and individual situation on a case by case basis. I was raised by my grandmother, Mae Ruth Elder, who instilled in me the “Golden Rule” which is do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Therefore, it is important to me to handle clients files as I would handle my own. I have learned a resilient spirit and have a survivor’s heart. Success has not been handed to me easily, but rather I continue to learn “To whom much is given much is required.” Many years of medical challenges have plagued my children but have made me a better person, both personally as well as professionally. All of my challenges have taught me empathy, strength and have encouraged me to prevail through a strong sense of faith, part of which I attribute to my membership at Golden Star #49 of Winter Park, which is part of the Order Of Eastern Stars. It is here that I am able to express and act on my belief in community service, selflessness and sisterhood. Danyetta Tavares Charles Rutenberg Realty 407 242-0210 danyettacloses@yahoo.com

Part of my support team is my confidant and brother, Howard Joseph Payton, who has endured many a venting session. Servicing buyers, sellers, rentals as well as land, I most enjoy helping sellers in distressed situations and being able to turn it around and provide some peace of mind and relief in a time needed most. Most come to me scared, unsure, sometimes not knowledgeable about the process. I have gained more in my Real Estate career than I have given. Blu Me Over with Your Love FABIO NAPOLEONI AT POP GALLERY AT DOWNTOWN DISNEY速 WEST SIDE By Maria Delis

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

THE ARTS - 85

A LITTLE LOVE CRAZY

“Sorrow, compassion and hope are my primary colors,” artist Fabio Napoleoni says about his vibrant work. His artistic pieces evoke emotion … While his wife and baby daughter slept, he roamed the hospital hallways looking for the right spot to sit down to sketch. He remembers needing an outlet to express his inner turmoil, what one feels when their child falls ill. Napoleoni was not alone; he chatted with parents going through similar situations. Sketching round and square-headed stick figures soon turned into therapy sessions. From pen and ink drawings, his art eventually transitioned into vibrant pastels. In each piece a heart – a symbol for his daughter and her ailment. His art then reflected the ups and downs in their lives: When Lauren’s little heart felt stronger, Napoleoni’s art showed hope and joy. But when it felt weak, his cartoon characters exhibited melancholy, the heart scarred. “I tried to capture not just my emotions, but of those around me who were also dealing with issues concerning their children. From then on my goal has been to create art that everyone can relate with,” Napoleoni says.

Today, after eleven medical procedures, Lauren is an energetic ten-year-old, nothing phasing her strong spirit. “If it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” the artist remarks. Napoleoni’s artistic world consists of adorable cartoon characters going on adventures, falling in love or getting their hearts broken. The main persona is Marcenivo, a square-head rag doll with one button eye. He escapes his reality by drawing unique worlds, capturing Napoleoni’s emotions as he goes through his own journeys in life. Art first played a therapeutic role for Napoleoni in the early 1970s. Young Fabio suffered from severe asthma. His Italian-American mother, an artist herself, encouraged her son to explore his talent as he stayed indoors, avoiding asthma triggers. Like Marcenivo, Fabio created his own worlds through his art. When he was five years old, they moved from Puerto Rico to New York, where he continued drawing his comics. Spider Man was his favorite. In 1984, they

relocated to Maine, where Napoleoni resides today with his own family. “It was a rough transition,” Napoleoni told me. They were not many Italians in the town. Influenced by the skateboard culture, his drawings turned into graffiti art. Then, after high school, while pursuing his passion for music, he was paid to graffiti club walls and to create banners for various businesses. He would DJ on the side too. “Art was always there,” he recalls. After studying music production in college, Napoleoni worked with stained glass artist Blaise Botti. When Botti took a look at his portfolio, he pushed the young artist to share his work with the public. He knew that it was not “Maine enough,” so they were going to get his work and his message out there through the digital world. They went to EBAY first. Fabio Napoleoni now exhibits his art in national and international galleries. But POP Gallery at Downtown Disney® West

The Gallery is located directly across from Wolfgang Puck® Café and Bongos Cuban Café™, and between AMC Theatres and the Splitsville™ bowling lanes. On April 19th and 20th, the Gallery unveiled Napoleoni’s latest original paintings and limited edition giclees, including a new piece exclusive for POP Gallery: “Blu Me Over With Your Love.” Blu, Napoleoni’s little bluebird character, inspired the centerpiece for this Easter art show. The lovable bird is The Kid’s (the gas-mask-wearing character) sidekick. Napoleoni’s latest work focuses on love, hope and faith, so Blu has been delivering good news and experiencing comedic adventures in love. In “A Little Love Crazy,” for example, zombie girl birds chase poor Blu while the heart keeps up with him during the escape. The show featured eight new original paintings, three new pen and inks by Napoleoni, including the POP Gallery exclusive “Just Show Your Love.” On April 19th, the artist and gallery representatives unveiled these new pieces and hosted a meet and greet for guests and collectors. Even two hours before the event, the line was quickly forming outside the petite gallery. That was not an unprecedented phenomenon. “They travel from across the country,” Napoleoni told me. Fans often wait up to six hours in line to get a personal A PORTRAIT OF LOVE - ORIGINAL ACRYLIC ON WOOD - 12 X 18 - SOLD

dedication and to share their stories with the artist. This is the biggest compliment– listening to people’s stories and hearing how his art pieces became part of their lives. “Don’t buy art because it fits your furniture,” states Napoleoni, “buy art because you love it.” In other words, buy art because it stirs up emotions, you remember a special place or person in your life. show, there was a silent auction for the “Feeling Blu” painting with one hundred percent of the proceeds donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Thanks to Disney, Orlando has a strong comic/cartoon culture. At Napoleoni’s first show at POP Gallery in 2009, he sold all of his pieces. He then knew a special relationship had formed not only with POP but also with the city. The artist loves visiting Orlando and sharing his newest art with his fans. He also plans to move here with his wife, son and daughter.

Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh, Jackson Pollock and Pablo Picasso, three artists known for spilling their emotions onto canvas and still managing to conjure strong feelings from today’s audiences, Napoleoni continues to expand his work by exploring new themes and creating new characters. “Picasso never settled for just one form of art, but he tried many and mastered them all,” Napoleoni states on his website. We hope Fabio does the same. www.popgalleryorlando.com

Fabio Napoleoni “Share the Love”

“[Napoleoni’s] art is the biggest reason I started to work here,” gallery representative Todd McKee told me. McKee understands the significance behind each piece and he always shares these stories with collectors. Fabio Napoleoni enjoys working with POP because they want pieces that feature all of his characters, not only Marcenivo. They encourage the artist to broaden his focus and explore new characters. His future goals include partaking in large projects; for example, painting wall-size pieces especially for charitable causes. During the April art

STRETCHING THE REACH OF FEDERAL CRIMINAL LAW; TOO SMALL FISH - YES I MEAN REAL FISH - BY MARK L. HORWITZ

> The passage of criminal laws in response to perceived problems has been a common practice of politicians. Many believe that new criminal laws are a lot easier for politicians to deal with than agreeing on the budget, social security or keeping the government running. At the federal level, this leads to expanding criminal statutes that usually duplicate existing laws. The expansion of crimes, however, also occurs when the laws are stretched to cover conduct not contemplated by Congress.

Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine Street Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhorwitzlaw.com

The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 was the congressional response to the Enron scandal. The law includes a provision that makes it a crime to alter, destroy, falsify or make a false entry on any document, record or tangible object to impede an investigation.

The Supreme Court has decided to review the conviction of a fisherman for throwing away undersized fish after he received a citation (ticket) in the Gulf of Mexico from a federal officer for taking undersized fish and being told to bring the fish into port. Unfortunately those who practice criminal law have seen many examples of criminal laws being applied to conduct which Congress did not consider. From Enron’s shredding of corporate records to throwing away small fish is an example of the expansion of criminal laws. It only took a little over 10 years from the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act designed to punish corporate destruction of records to be used to prosecute a fisherman for throwing small fish overboard. <

While many think this law was aimed at record keeping activities of large corporations, it has been expanded to criminalizing throwing away undersized fish. SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

RUNWAY TO HOPE By Courtney Caggiano Photos By Brion Price

> As the sun began to set on May 10th, time seemed to stand still in Orlando, or at least at the Rosen Shingle Creek. This important night served as a bridge from a painful yesterday to a hopeful tomorrow: a bridge in the form of a runway. Everyday, millions of children diagnosed with cancer wake up in a hospital that has become their home. Although fighting a battle they are too young to face, they do so with strength. Runway to Hope’s Spring Fashion Soiree, an evening honoring the incredible spirit of these beautiful children, allowed girls and boys from Central Florida to trade in their daily challenges for a chance to shine as brightly as the stars they wish upon every night.

Mark & Josie NeJame with Evie

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

Thousands of the city’s elite came out to support the courageous children who are currently facing childhood cancer, as well as to congratulate those who have overcome the disease. Emotions ran high in the Rosen Shingle Creek’s Sebastian Ballroom as 120 pediatric

cancer patients and survivors walked the runway, showing off their individual fashion sense as well as their radiant personalities. The superstar children received the special attention they have long deserved as local celebrities served as their enthusiastic escorts, eager to take part in the unforgettable moment. Hosted by actress and cancer survivor Brooke Burke-Charvet and television persona and comedian Ross Mathews, the evening was a vibrant celebration of the gift that life is for these children. The star-studded runway show filled the ballroom with hopeful expectations of an optimistic future, along with sobering revelations of the realities the children face. This combination of awe-inspiring encouragement and overwhelming sympathy created within the audience a humbling stillness; even as the crowd of dedicated supporters cheered on the efforts of the brave children, each guest seemed to make a little more room in their hearts for a quiet moment of reverence for the models.

ORLANDO NOW - 91

LET’S HOLD HANDS. LET’S WALK TOGETHER. LET’S END CHILDHOOD CANCER.

While Brooke and Ross proudly announced every special star on the runway, they also shared special thoughts that the children had written about themselves: thoughts that illustrated the sweetly simple innocence of childhood. Some children stated what they wanted to be when they grow up, and others told a bit about their favorite snacks and colors. Each child had a unique story, and they all described how they envisioned their future selves, from career aspirations to goals they hope to achieve. Perhaps the most powerful statement, profound in its straightforward nature, was from a young girl who shared that, when she grows up, she hopes to be a “big girl” one day. After all, that is what we all want for her. All these precious children truly want is life, and we must make sure they are provided with the treatment necessary to keep it. During the evening, host Ross Mathews sat down with Orlando Style to discuss how, even if we do not personally know each child, every story inspires us to take action and finance the cause for a cure. “When you hear what they do, you think about, ‘What if it was my family?’ You think about the families that are affected by it, and I think every family has been affected by cancer,” he says. “I have a duty to show up and try to do something.” Like Ross, many of the guests strived to fulfill their own duty to the children, raising thousands of dollars in a live auction that preceded the runway show. A desire to support the local patients of childhood cancer with both financial and emotional means is the motivation behind Orlando’s own Mark and Josie NeJame’s founding of Runway to Hope in 2010. Mark and Josie have always had a passion for helping those in need, and they have faith that this organization will encourage others to help ease the

burden of those with childhood cancer. Over the past four years, the NeJame’s have watched this inspirational charity develop into a Central Florida sensation. What began as a modest fashion show of merely 30 children has grown into a groundbreaking movement that has raised more than $3 million to date. The donations from this year’s event will benefit pediatric oncology programs at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, Florida Hospital for Children, and Nemours Children’s Hospital. The funds raised by Runway to Hope have even aided in the establishment of treatment programs that were nonexistent before the start of the organization.

RUNWAY TO HOPE BEST CHARITY OF 2014! ORLANDO STYLE MAGAZINE

Along with raising money, Runway to Hope has equally raised the spirits of the children-turned-models. For one night, these kids become whoever they wish to be, one of the greatest gifts they could receive, but more importantly, they simply get a moment to smile. “I think it’s just a day to play dress up, to feel special and fancy, to feel like a prince or princess and to celebrate them,” Ross adds. “Anything that sort of brings L.O.L.’s and smiles can only help.”

low them to fulfill these dreams. We stand beside the encouraging thoughts of Ross Mathews as well as the efforts of the NeJame family who long to transform Runway to Hope into the organization that will one day end childhood cancer. This night was truly a testament to the endurance of the human spirit and the giving hearts of those who believe in it. Although the contributions from Runway to Hope have amazingly advanced the cancer treatment programs in Central Florida, there are still children facing the heartache of childhood cancer, and we must continue to do what we can fill their lives with a hope for the future.
