HIMALAYAN SALT THERAPY at Waldorf Astoria Spa

Himalayan Salt Therapy is making waves across the country for providing relief from a variety of ailments and I had the opportunity to experience a rejuvenating session for myself during an afternoon of unparalleled relaxation at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando Spa. The Spa’s Himalayan Salt Room is only one of seven in the U.S. making the Waldorf Astoria Orlando Spa the first full-service resort spa to offer this service in the state of Florida. The Spa boasts twenty-four thousand square feet, 22 treatment rooms and a team of roughly 70 providers. Their menu offers everything from Facial Therapies to Salon Services and everything in between. Upon our arrival, our service providers Catherine and Melanie led my companion and I through the gorgeous facility into private rooms where we were treated to the Spa’s signature Himalayan Salt Escape—a 50 minute Himalayan Salt Stone Massage and a 30 minute Himalayan Salt Room Therapy Session. Although the massage has been offered since January 2017, the salt therapy experience has only been opened since this past December. However, in spite of it only being a few months old, the feedback has been incredible.

“I noticed that a lot of our guests that are long-distance travelers come down with a little something when they get here which is really unfortunate as it can negatively impact their vacation. My desire was to assist those with asthma or allergies or who feel like they might be coming down with a cold and I found the room to be very effective for me personally so I really liked the idea of integrating it for our guest.” -Lindsay Neeley, Spa Director Himalayan Salt Therapy (or halotherapy) is a natural therapy dating back hundreds of years

to Eastern Europe. It involves relaxing in a specialized room filled with dry salt particles that help to cleanse your airways and skin in addition to boosting your general well-being.

When my companion and I stepped into the fascinating therapy room, we were both taken back by the simple beauty of the space. The walls were lined with gorgeous Himalayan salt bricks that we learned were mined in Pakistan and the ground was covered in vibrant salt granules from wall to wall. Together, my companion and I laid back in cozy recliners, dimmed the lights, and allowed the halotherapy portion of the salt room to work its magic. This portion involved pharmaceutical grade sodium fluoride that is placed into a halo-generator. The device grinds the salt into ultra fine particles that diffuse throughout the room and enter your body via the respiratory system. Inhaling the particles speeds up mucus clearance and helps to improve respiratory function, while simultaneously eliminating bacteria, soothing the lungs, and opening airways which might be constricted.

“We had a young lady who flew in from London recently and she was unfortunately sick before she even got on the plane, but she did three days in a row in the salt chamber and she said that she’s never recovered from a sinus infection so quickly.

By and large our feedback has been so positive about the experience and I think it’s because it really does help with those things.” -Lindsay Neeley, Spa Director The backlit walls of the room give off wonderful negative ions to help guests relax which we learned are the same ions you get when you sit on the beach inhaling the salty air and watching the waves for hours. The Himalayan Salt Room provides this same sense of peace

The Orlando Style Magazine staff was recently invited to experience the all new Social Hour menu at the incredible Council Oak Steaks & Seafood at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa. The Social Hour menu, which is available seven days a week between 4 p.m.- 6 p.m. in the Council Oak Lounge, did not disappoint.

Chef Francisco Pomalaza, chef de cuisine at Council Oak Steaks & Seafood, developed the menu to reflect the restaurant’s elegant plating and classic new American flavors. The menu consists of six “Signature Bites,” as well as three classic cocktails and five distinctive wines by the glass.

“We are excited to introduce these inventive new dishes to Council Oak,” says Dawn Lazo, Vice President of Food & Beverage at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa.

The restaurant’s prime meats and seafood offerings are also on display for Social Hour.

The Grilled Beef Tenderloin Skewers served with blended herb chimichurri and crispy shallots, as well as the Council Oak Meatball marinated in house made marinara and served with Parmigiano Reggiano, both feature Council Oak’s dry-aged beef. Guests will enjoy Chef Pomalaza’s Korean-style take on BBQ Kurobuta Pork Belly with sweet kimchi glaze, parsnip chips and refreshing cucumber slaw. For a taste of the fresh seafood on offer, the Skuna Bay Salmon Tartare is a raw preparation with three citrus dressing, pickled red onions, citrus crème fraiche and crispy potato skin that showcases the freshness of the Vancouver Island fish.

As the city swaps their red roses for green

clovers, Orlando Style is looking back on the month of February and sharing all the most exciting events to have happened—just in case you missed it!

On February 9th, pet lovers from all over Central Florida gathered at beautiful Lake Eola to support Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando’s mission to educate, shelter, place, and heal pets and their families with compassionate, responsible care. 2019 Paws in the Park was a community wide fundraising event providing support for the more than 7,000 homeless pets who will be cared for at Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando’s two shelters this year. The event is Orlando’s oldest and largest pet walk and featured multiple activities for pets as well as shopping, food trucks and entertainment.

Also on February 9th, The Sam Flax Wall Project returned for its highly anticipated, 4th annual event. The day long, iconic celebration featured 11 hand-selected artists completely repainting the Sam Flax building with more new murals and wall space than ever! Guests of the festivities got a chance to meet local artists while enjoying a day of art, food vendors, music, raffle prizes, interactive art stations and more!

Bringing the heat since 2009, the Orlando Chili Cook-off is one of the city’s most mouthwatering festivals! On February 16th, Chili-lovers and chili cooks alike were invited to downtown Orlando for a day of fun, food, music and friendly competition. Guests enjoyed

a beautiful day at Festival Park sampling from 100+ chili booths crafted by local restaurants and nationwide chefs. Since 2010, the event has raised more than $150,000 for Special Olympics Florida. In addition to great food and beverages, attendees also experienced live music, games, vendors, a DJ station, and a Kids Zone.

On February 16th, the city spent the day making “Pour Decisions” at the Orlando Wine Festival in Orange County History Center Park! In addition to over 70 wines from all over the world, this year’s festivities also featured a local vendor market, hand picked food trucks, a build-a-sangria bar, a sparkling wine bubble bar, immersive photo experiences, a local vendor market, music by DJ Darren, and a VIP lounge with unlimited samplings.

People from all walks of life were invited to celebrate the beauty of Black History Month at Orlando Fashion Square Mall with a free, dynamic showcase of the Art, Culture and Business Community. On February 17th, the 4th Annual Black History Month Arts Inspired Festival featured music and cultural presentations, an art walk through Africa, a step show, and a fashion show all presented in the middle of a Business Expo.

From gourmet blends to off-menu specialties and even beer pairings, Orlando came together on February 22nd to pay tribute to America’s sweetheart—the Hamburger! The first annual Orlando Burger Week kicked off on the 22nd and continues for 10 days until March 3rd. The idea behind Burger Week is to get people to

embrace the food, culture and Orlando-love while getting them out to eat, drink, and try new places! Each restaurateur and Chef will prepare a unique take on the burger that will be available for just $5.

The 2019 Kickoff to Soccer was off to a running start with the fifth annual Purple Pride 5K presented by Orlando Health, SunPass, Publix, JetBlue, and Academy Sports + Outdoors. This year’s annual running of Orlando City fans took place on February 23rd at Orlando City Stadium. Over 1,000 participating runners received a race t-shirt, a commemorative finishers medal, and one ticket to the Orlando City Home Opener on Saturday, March 2nd against NYCFC. A post-race celebration took place within the West Lot of the stadium with activities including a race DJ, complimentary runner refreshments, interactive games for the entire family and tasty food trucks.

One of the largest food events in the Central Florida area returned as Orlando foodies and wine lovers experienced a unique local cuisine paired with wines from around the globe.

Located in the heart of downtown Orlando at Lake Eola, the 11th Annual Downtown Food & Wine Fest took place February 23rd-24th and featured the city’s finest cuisine from 40 premier Orlando restaurants. In addition to live music entertainment, guests enjoyed pairing their mouth-watering spreads with international and domestic wines.

Many people think they cannot afford to max out their 401(k) contributions. Many others do not think about contributing to their own account beyond what their company will match. I am asking you to reconsider these decisions. One way or another, the funds are coming out of your paycheck, either it is going into your 401(k), or it is going to the IRS in the form of payroll tax. Let me show you that you can afford to increase your contribution.

By maxing out pre-tax 401(k) savings at $19,000, a dual-income married couple can reduce their taxable income by $38,000. At the 25% tax bracket, that equates to a rough estimate of $9,500 in tax savings. 401(k) investors, of course, will have to pay taxes when they start withdrawing their 401(k) savings at retirement.

The bottom line: the more you save in your 401(k), the more you save on your taxes.

The 15th annual Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg will return March

8-10 as the opening race for the NTT IndyCar Series for a ninth consecutive year. It will also feature five support racing series on track with four of the five opening their 2019 seasons in St. Petersburg.

The Grand Prix is held on a temporary waterfront street course that includes a combination of adjacent downtown streets circling Pioneer Park, the Mahaffey Theater, Salvador Dali Museum and extending onto the runways of Albert Whitted Airport, which overlook the Tampa Bay and picturesque St. Petersburg Harbor and Marina.

The NTT IndyCar Series is the premier open-wheel racing series in the United States. It offers one of the most diverse and challenging schedules in motorsports with races held on ovals, permanent road courses and temporary street courses. A new aerodynamic body kit was introduced to the series in 2018 at the St. Petersburg opener providing a sleeker, more aggressivelooking Indy car.

The open-top 911 continues in a decades-

long tradition, established when Porsche unveiled the prototype of the first 911 Cabriolet at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September 1981. Customers and fans alike were instantly captivated. The first open-top 911 variant rolled off the production line in 1982, and it has been a constant feature in the model range ever since. The open-top version of the iconic sports car will be launched in 2019 to almost unprecedented fanfare. It includes all the innovative features of the Coupe, along with Cabriolet-specific advanced features such as new hydraulics which get the roof opened and closed more quickly than ever.

The new model echoes the modern lines of the Coupe, though it remains unmistakably a Porsche 911 in Cabriolet form. The fullyautomatic soft top has an integrated glass rear window, while the soft top structure contains magnesium surface elements known as bows, which reliably prevent ballooning of the roof

The new engine mounting position makes the Cabriolet even more torsionally rigid than its predecessor. For the first time, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sport chassis is available for the 911 Cabriolet. The springs used for this are harder and shorter, the front and rear anti-roll-bars are more rigid, and the chassis overall has been lowered by ten millimeters. These adjustments give the 911 a more neutral feel on the road, with better weight distribution.

April 15th is the deadline for filing income tax returns but that date can be delayed to October 31st by filing an extension with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). The extension must be submitted by April 15th. In addition, any tax due must be paid by April 15th.

The failure to file a return carries a penalty of 5% of the amount required to be shown on the tax return for each month, or fraction of a month, that the return is late.

This penalty is subject to a maximum of 25%. The failure to pay the tax within the time allowed results in a 0.5% penalty for each month, or fraction of a month, not to exceed 25%. In addition, the IRS charges interest which is compounded daily

If the IRS believes that the failure to timely file the return was fraudulent, the civil penalty is 15% per month, up to a maximum of 75% on the amount of tax that should have been shown on the tax return.

These civil penalties for failure to timely file and pay, can significantly increase the amount due to the IRS.

The law also provides that the willful failure to file a tax return and pay tax can be a crime. If a person knows a tax return is due or a payment of taxes is required, and willfully decides not to file the tax return or not to pay the tax, that person may be prosecuted. A criminal prosecution for failure to timely file the tax return can result in a prison sentence of up to one year in prison for each year a return is not filed.

Likewise, each year of willful nonpayment of tax can be punished by up to one year in prison. It is the normal practice of the IRS not to bring a criminal case for failure to file the tax return or pay the tax, unless there are multiple years involved. It is

common that a prosecution will involve 3 or more years of failure to timely file or pay.

A conviction can also result in a $25,000 fine for a person and a $100,000 fine for a corporation. This is in addition to paying the tax plus interest and civil penalties.

Many people do not understand how a person cannot file tax returns for years.

I have had clients explain that he or she failed to file a tax return one year for an innocent reason, such as being ill or out of the country. The person is afraid to file a tax return the next year and this repeats itself until many years have gone by without filing a tax return. If the IRS discovers a person has failed to file tax returns for several years, the chance of a criminal prosecution increases significantly.

There are ways to deal with multiple years of not filing file tax returns. In November of 2018, the IRS announced new guidelines for the VOLUNTARY DISCLOSURE PRACTICE (VDP). Under the VDP, a person is able to file late tax returns and avoid prosecution as long as certain conditions are met. Some of the more significant conditions are that the person’s income cannot be from illegal sources and that the person cannot be under audit or criminal investigation. In addition, the individual must fully cooperate in the IRS audit and reach a settlement which includes payment of all taxes, interest, and civil penalties.

The VDP, as in all matters related to the IRS, is not simple nor easy-to-understand.

DR. NORBERT CHRISTMANN D.V.M. & TEAM Animal Clinic of Wekiva Dr. Norbert Christmann is a graduate of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. He started his career as a mixed animal veterinarian in Canada’s north, before eventually moving south, first to South Dakota and then on to Florida in 2008.

During his tenure in Florida Dr Christmann has been solely a small animal practitioner, working a variety of jobs with the SPCA’s and other clinics while honing his surgical and medical skills.

In December of 2013, Dr. Christmann opened the Animal Clinic of Wekiva in Longwood Florida with a view to provide a high quality of veterinary medicine at a reasonable price. Since its inception the Dr. Christmann has ensured that the Animal Clinic of Wekiva has the most up to date equipment available, and strives to push the boundaries of what the clinic can offer, beyond the routine medical offerings making use of a vast support network available both electronically and within the Orlando veterinary community.

The Team The real strength at the Animal Clinic of Wekiva is the team that has been put in place. The first to join was Millie Heinen who started with the clinic’s inception. Millie is quiet and polite and a leader at our front desk.

The second person added to the team was Daniela Perez. Daniela is small

but has a wonderful sense of humor and is someone who is very reliable and compassionate in her duties as a veterinary technician. The third on board was Yessenia Villanueva. Yessenia is someone who Dr. Christmann had worked with before, she possesses organizational skills to be envied and genuine love of all animals. Ms Summer Lamoureux was next she has a fun loving personality and spend a lot of her time between reception and collecting what data is needed to run the clinic. Mrs. Heather Corn is the final person added to the staff. Heather likes to joke around a bit and is one of the most accomplished technicians that Dr. Christmann has ever had the pleasure of working with. Dr. Juan Patino graduated from the Facultad de Medicina Veterinaria, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Bogota, in 1983. Soon after graduation, through the encouragement and support of his family, Dr. Patino relocated to the United States to officially launch his professional career. Driven by hard work, sacrifice, and responsibility Dr. Patino bought and took ownership of Kirkpatrick Veterinary Hospital, PA in 1998.

Since then, he and his team have strived to provide the highest quality of veterinary medicine. He has accomplished this quality by maintaining the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) accreditation during his ownership. AAHA evaluates practices from customer service, to maintaining the most advanced and current protocols for any case presented.

Dr. Patino has a knack for honoring and respecting the unwavering bond between family pets, and their owners. An example is how close he has been with his personal pets, which you can find working with him every day at his practice. Clients loved his original assistant, “Pibe”, who was his

silk yorkshire terrier that wandered the halls behind him. Currently, you’ll meet, “Pacho”, a rescued Shih Tzu that has carried on the tradition of being his assistant in all exam rooms.

The success of his long-spanned career of over 35 years lies on his passion for animal welfare, combined with his special ability to establish lifetime relationships with his clients and their animal companions throughout the years.
