PUBLISHER’S NOTE 14 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Dear Readers, This September issue of Orlando Style is our Fall Fashion issuefeaturing the newest trends in elegant Haute Couture with the Fall/ Winter fashion runways in Paris and Milan. We are also starting to see improvements on the inflation and gas prices are slowly coming down again. When it comes to real estate, we see a slight slowing in the market even though the higher valued properties are still rising in price and are hard to get. Upscale properties are still a sellers market comparing to the lower level properties that move into more of a buyers market. You may find professional advice in our Portfolio Estate section where excellent real estate professionals are presenting their best. Let us know about your experience.

Summer is coming to an end, and that means this year’s hurricane season will soon be reaching its peak. Make sure that you are staying alert and stocking up on the necessities and usual supplies before any threatening weather gets too close for comfort. Even though it is important to take the proper precautions, I believe that we should not become too concerned with tropical formations that are emerging from thousands of miles away, since they may never make it this far. Don’t let the worries of tomorrow allow you to forget to enjoy the happiness of today. As we send everyone in this city our wishes for safety during the rest of this hurricane season, we also hope that you all have a relaxing and reviving Labor Day holiday spent with your closest family and friends. Take a well-deserved break from your work schedule and indulge in the beautiful paradise that is Central Florida. We are wishing a very happy New Year / Rosh Hashanah 5783 to all of our Jewish friends. While we are eternally thankful for the freedom and privileges of this country, we send our well wishes and hope for peace in the world that is currently affected by turmoil. May we all try to live together with gratitude and strive to enjoy life with tolerance in our minds and care in our hearts. We are so appreciative of the loyalty of our dedicated readers. I hope that you all have a wonderful beginning to this fall season!

Orlando Style attended the: JAMES BEARD FOUNDATION® 10th ANNUAL TASTE AMERICA CULINARY SERIES, PRESENTED BY CAPITAL ONE at Kabooki Restaurant KabookiOrlando. Ninety-five guests gathered for a two-plus hour meal featuring decadent raw-bar setups beneath branded ice sculptures, setting the stage for a multicourse meal with effort split between Moso, whose kaiseki first course ate more like three (highlights included a citrusy mizudako balanced with deeply oceanic Hokkaido uni and a two-bite toro tartare oshizuki piled with Kaluga caviar) and guest chef Taylor Thornhill of Bateau, a modern American steakhouse in Seattle, Washington.

Fear fans are getting the opportunity to step into The Weeknd’s nightmarish vision this Halloween.

The acclaimed artist and producer has teamed up with the creatives at the Universal Studios theme parks in Los Angeles and Orlando to realize The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare, a haunted house inspired by select tracks from his similarly titled record-breaking album. It’s part of the wildly popular annual Halloween Horror Nights event.

VACATIONLAND

The final mazes have yet to be revealed, but tickets are now on sale for Halloween Horror Nights at both the Los Angeles and Orlando parks. The Universal Studios Hollywood event kicks off on Thursday, September 8, 2022, but the nightmare begins a few days earlier at Universal Orlando Resort. The screams start there on Friday, September 2, 2022. Both events will run through Monday, October 31, 2022.

As guests make their way through the seasonal attraction, they’ll be immersed in a nightmarish and surreal world soundtracked and inspired by The Weeknd’s fourth consecutive number one album and some of the multi-award-winning artist’s short films. Park officials warn that those brave enough to enter will be “stalked by slashers, bandaged maniacs, gruesome toad-like creatures and other unfathomable horrors from the mind of the artist.” The question is, will they be able to escape his creations?

24 | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM VACATIONLAND

The Weekend is not the first music artist to have their tunes turned into a terrifying reality at Halloween Horror Nights. He follows in the footsteps of Alice Cooper. Once again this year, Slash provides the soundtrack for one of the haunted houses.

34 | STYLETOME.COM DON’T MISS THE BEAT RED H T CH

Established in the 1980s, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are notorious for combining funk and punk rock to create a musical style unique to their own. Fans love them for their originality and for delivering some of the biggest classic hits of all Whethertime. or not you grew up with the Peppers, it’s likely you’ve heard the name before. Since their beginning in the 80s, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have gone through several transitions, only to come out stronger and notoriously renowned at the end. Did you know that before they were the Red Hot Chili Peppers, their short-lived name was “Tony Flow and the Majestic Masters of Mayhem?” If you ask me, they made the right choice by spicing up the name (no pun intended). Throughout their musical journey which began in high school, the band lost and gained a number of members, with the guitarist being the prime denominator. Despite all the fallouts, transitions and controversial reputation for being unapologetic in the drug addiction department, the Red Hot Chili Peppers found their way back to stardom and proceeded to produce some of their biggest hits. In 1991, the Red Hot Chili Peppers followed guidance by music producer Rick Rubin to record their album at a mansion once owned by the magician Harry Houdini (also rumored to be haunted). Aside from the spooks, Rubin’s advice served them right, “Blood Sugar Sex Majik,” became an instant breakthrough album, and it only went uphill from there for the band. The album sold over 12 million copies globally and earned the band a Grammy award, thanks to “Give it Away,” ultimately landing the number two position on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Then came the classic “Californiacation,” in 1999 as the seventh studio album, bringing the Red Hot Chili Peppers even more stardom with 16 million copies sold, and to date, their most successful album. “Californiacation” features three number-one hits, “Scar Tissue, “Otherside,” and of course “Californiacation.” Rolling stone labeled it as one of the 500 Greatest albums of all time. Fast forward to the 2000s, the Red Hot Chili Peppers continued to build their musical empire, but this time with a less-controversial and sober twist. In 2010, the band made their live comeback, playing tribute to Neil Young at MusiCares. A couple years later in 2012, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2014, graced fans all over with their presence at a highly viewed Super Bowl Halftime performance. “It’s amazing to see our passion and commitment to this project be recognized and appreciated on a national level,” explained Leila Bedoian, co-owner of The Local – St. Augustine. “We are so excited to be able to bring attention to our local community, which has welcomed us so warmly, and we want to pass that hospitality on to our Originallyguests!”built in the 1940s, back when roadside motels were the standard accommodation offered in the Sunshine State, The Local –St. Augustine is currently a 21-room property renovated to feel like nostalgic Old Florida. It features a retro inground pool, flamingo pink façade, kitschy palm frond wallpaper, and seaside artwork as well as the new “Florida Room,” which functions as a hospitality suite, offering up complimentary coffee and tea services.

“Even though we both have extensive backgrounds in the hospitality industry, owning your own property is a completely different experience,” said Leila. “In less than a year, we have learned a lot about what the modern guest is looking for while also making fun improvements to the property such as revamped rooms, all new landscaping, and pool upgrades. We are one hundred percent focused on making sure our guests have an amazing experience when they come to St. Augustine. Exciting changes have just begun! COLOR

DON’T BE AFRAID OF

LIVING ‘N STYLE 40 | STYLETOME.COM

Color can be intimidating. However, you want to step out of your comfot zone. But not too much, and perhaps you don’t know which step to take. If you are brave enough to commit to an entire outfit, great! However, sometimes smaller and more simple is better for you, instead of going all out and making a huge wardrobe shift and buying a neon orange blazer that you are only going to wear once. There are many ways to do this and I’m sure there is a way where it suits you best! Start off with a base color. Some examples are: Navy, black, grey, or beige. Once you have your base color picked for your suit, then choose what and where you would like the pop of color to be. It can be anywhere from your tie, bowtie, hankerchief, socks, or even the blouse under your blazer! These small adjustments make a big statement, believe it or not. And as far as what color to choose as your “accent” color, you can pick any. Find a color that looks good and stands out against the base color that you choose. Another thing that you can do is choose a pattern. Many ties, socks, and hankerchiefs come in different types of patterns and prints that also give the same affect. Next time you have the opportunity to wear a nice blouse or jacket, pair it with a pop of color of your choice!

GET YOUR SKIN READY FOR FALL! Tips you need to know!

BEAUTY

With a new season comes new beauty trends, and this fall, there are plenty of makeup, skin, and nail options to choose from. Beauty experts are already anticipating a resurgence of bobs, lobs, and bangs, but when it comes to the other steps in your daily beauty routine, it appears that triedand-true staples (with a few unexpected twists) are sticking around. We might not entirely welcome the departure of warm weather, but this is a good opportunity to revamp your beauty regimen. Fall presents us the chance to update the usual nude palette

What it smells like: sweet, spiced, creamy pumpkin (a.k.a. the essence of fall). Fragrance notes: harvest pumpkin, spiced clove and sugarcane. Stay Clean!

LIVING ‘N STYLE

Ditch the summer neons, it’s time to embrace thel neutrals. Neutrals are available to compliment every skin tone and play a part in every color. Browns and nudes are especially appealing and look professional. When it comes to metallics, avoid silver and go with a gold. If a darker look suits you, vampy colors are always approved. Try a maroon or cherry red. Blue can be tricky, but try to find grey or purple tones, like navy. If ever in question, look for a warm tone that will compliment your most natural or darker wintery outfits.

When it comes to skincare, fall often spells disaster for our once sunkissed skin. With the changes in weather, our skin usually goes from oily to dry. In this case, go for products like a soothing, lightweight moisturizer and a mask created to combat redness and dry skin woes.

with hints of shimmer and the unexpected use of bright color. Plus, with holiday festivities just around the corner, always make sure to have a few makeup goodies that can work for whatever the day throws your way.

In Florida, it’s hard sometimes to keep up with trends when the weather seems impossible to work with. It is simply just too hot for certain pieces. But there are ways to go around it. Fall fashion is here and we want to wear the plaid, the scarves, the boots, the knits, the hats, you name it, we wanna wear it! So here are some tips to look the part (while not sweating in the Florida heat). Colors. One of the easiest ways to be in the fall spirit is to wear cooler tones, tradtional fall colors. Burgandy, black, brown, taupe, forest green, etc. You can wear a t-shirt, or a light long - sleeve shirt, in one of those fall colors, pair it with your favorite bottoms and you’re ready for fall. You can wear any clothing item, even a dress, as long as it’s in your favorite fall color. Now for texture, you want breathable clothing. You can purchase a knit top with no sleeves. And boom. Pair it with leather shorts, looking the part while avoiding the sweating!

GET IN UNIFORM Fall’s favorite pattern every year

I know it sounds crazy, but there are many ways to use a scarf as an edgy necktie to add more attitude to your outfit without feeling like you’re dressed in the wrong season. Get that silk scarf you have had in your closet since last winter, and give your look an edgy touch with a necktie. This look is best achieved by tying the scarf in either the french knot or similar to the way a flight attendant might wear her uniform. The idea with this accessory is to complement a casual look and make it more elegant for a brunch with your friends.

KNITS, SCARVES, BOOTS Fall fashion that we can wear in Florida! Fall simply will not be the same without plaid, tartan or flannel. You know fall is here when all the clothing stores have plaid on their displays. Its unique pattern gives the casual, cozy vibe, which is why it is so popular in fall and winter. And fashion designers have also started to make more elegant clothing pieces using plaid, steering away from the casual vibe it gives. Of course plaid comes in bright colors too, but you want to go with the plaid or tartan that has burgandy, dark green, black, blue, or

The last tip for fall fashion in Florida’s heat is to accessorize. Wear your tank top and shorts, but wear boots with it, or add a hat and/or scarf. The idea is to keep cool while embracing the upcoming end-of-year season. Because even though we are in the month of Septemebr, it still feels like August. We have to do the best with what we’ve got until it actually gets cold.

TRANSITIONINGINTOFALL While living in the Florida heat!

54 | STYLETOME.COM

It’sseems.time to exchange those open toe’d flip flops for something a little more classy and on trend. Your shoes tell a lot about who you are, so starting with fall footwear is the easiest way to make the transition. Chelsea boots are still prominent in menswear, and we won’t see them going away any time soon. Chelsea boots are the perfect fall accessory because they can bring together an outfit or even be the statement piece. A neutral suede boot can make any basic outfit look stylish. You can even try complementing a leather jacket with black or brown leather boots. Incorporating jackets into your look may seem like the most difficult part when it still feels like summer. Nights get cool and breezy, so it’s perfect to wear a light jacket. Bomber jackets, cardigans, flannels, and light leather jackets are all good options for this transitional period. A classic transitional piece is a denim jacket. Denim jackets have the ability to make any outfit look put together. They aren’t too heavy, so they’re perfect to pair with a basic outfit underneath such as black jeans and a t-shirt to stay cool and still rock the fall trend. Fall doesn’t mean you have to completely cancel out your summer clothes. When putting together your fall wardrobe, look for burgundy, greens, mustard, navy, browns, and camel. These autumnal shades complement each other well and give off the appearance that you know how to properly dress for the “confusing” in-between season. Knowing the ropes of rocking fall fashion when the weather is still hot will have you entering cool weather prepared, ahead of the game, and fashion-forward. Letting go of summer doesn’t sound too bad now, does it?

You may not see the palms of palm trees falling, but believe it or not, fall is right around the corner. If you can’t wait to break out your boots and stand out in autumnal colors, easing your way into fall fashion when it’s still hot outside isn’t as hard as it

It’s well known that many movies are based on real-life events, but did you know that some films have actually been the cause of real-life events? Here are six films that changed the course of history in various ways, from overturning a life-long prison sentence to nearly putting one of the nation’s most beloved attractions out of business. If you’ve ever been in doubt of the power of movies, just keep on reading and you’ll be a believer in no time!

Famous Films That Inspired Real-life Events

BLACKFISH, 2013

The controversial documentary Blackfish questioned the ethics of orca captivity and sent waves through the marine park industry. SeaWorld suffered severe attendance drop-off as a result and major stock losses with even Southwest Airlines ending its SeaWorld partnership after facing backlash. The documentary spurred the passing of multiple legislative bills to prevent companies from using captive orcas, one of which was a whale-specific amendment to the Agriculture Appropriations Act. Another bill, the Orca Welfare and Safety Act, banned orca captivity for entertainment purposes in California.

Unless you live under a rock, you are well aware of the huge cultural phenomenon that was and still is High School Musical. Incredibly, the film is credited by 17-year-old Jordan Turpin as her motivation to escape lifelong confinement in her parents' house and free her siblings. Jordan was one of 13 children, ages 2 to 29, who had been held in captivity by their parents in California. They were allegedly beaten, choked, shackled, underfed, undereducated, rarely washed, and weren't allowed to go outside save for family trips. As such, they didn't know much about the world until they watched the Disney Channel. After seeing High School Musical and other pop culture content, Jordan realized what kind of life was out there for herself and her siblings. The brave teenager managed to eventually escape out a window and find help which led to the release of her 12 malnourished siblings and the life imprisonment of her parents.

THE THIN BLUE LINE, 1988 Sentenced to death in 1977 for the murder of a Texas police officer, Randall Dale Adams was eventually exonerated as a result of information uncovered by film-maker Errol Morris and presented in the acclaimed documentary, The Thin Blue Line. The film presents the case of Adams and questions why he was sentenced to death—later commuted to life in prison—for the killing in spite of key witnesses giving contradictory testimonies. The film centered around the "inconsistencies, incongruities and loose ends" of the case, and even obtained an admission of Adams' innocence by the original suspect of the case, David Harris. Videographic proof of witness perjury along with the film's popularity finally led to Adams' conviction being overturned though he received no compensation from the state of Texas for the 12 years he spent in prison.

THE BIRTH OF A NATION, 1915 As you’ll quickly find out, not every movie on our list has led to a positive event or change. Before 1915’s The Birth of a Nation glorified the Ku Klux Klan, the American white supremacist, right-wing terrorist, and hate group was entirely defunct. However, not long after the film’s release, the KKK was reborn with 16 members and by the mid-1920s, had grown to boast several million loyal followers. William J. Simmons was the man responsible for the revival and he became inspired to do so after drunkenly watching and rewatching The Birth of a Nation thanks to free admission granted by an Atlanta theater manager. In addition to reviving the Klan, The Birth of a Nation also created many of the group's signature traits such as pointed headwear, white robes, and cross burnings. These hallmarks of Klan members were not standardized by the original Klan, but were written into the source novel of the film and adopted by Simmons for his revival of the group.

HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, 2006

TITANIC, 1997 In addition to sparking the age-old debate of if Jack could have also fit on the door, the film Titanic also sparked a revolution of sorts by teaching multiple North Koreans about the outside world and inspiring them to defect. Yeonmi Park got her “first small taste of freedom” by viewing an illicit copy of Titanic at her uncle's house with the windows covered. Due to constant power outages, it took months to finish the film which her family hid under a potted plant in between watches. As she recalled in her memoir, “When I was 7 or 8 years old, the film that changed my life was Titanic. It amazed me that it was a story that took place a hundred years ago. Those people living in 1912 had better technology than most North Koreans…The idea that people could choose their own destinies fascinated me.” After an arduous journey that sadly took her father's life, Park successfully defected and is now a U.S. citizen. Fellow North Korean Jeong Kwang-il also watched Titanic under similar circumstances as Park before escaping to South Korea. He now smuggles media into his former country to continue the cycle of North Korean deprogramming.

TAXI DRIVER, 1976 Taxi Driver starring Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese and Jodi Foster tells the story of a mentally unstable veteran who works as a nighttime taxi driver in New York City, where the perceived decadence and sleaze fuels his urge for violent action. Not only did the movie receive four Academy Award nominations, it also inspired an attempted assassination of Ronald Reagan. On March 30, 1981, Reagan was shot by a man who wanted to impress Jodie Foster after becoming obsessed with her character in the film. John Hinckley Jr. watched Taxi Driver as many as 18 times, memorized the script, and began dressing, drinking, and acting like Robert De Niro's character Travis Bickle. This bizarre behavior resulted in him attempting to assassinate a politician just like Bickle does in the movie. Fortunately Reagan survived and Hinckley was hospitalized after being found not guilty by reason of insanity.

SeaWorld blamed the legislation for low attendance, but ultimately ended its orca breeding program and eventually phased out orcas altogether. They spoke of the changes saying, “Society is changing and we’re changing with it.”

As difficult as it may be, take some time for yourself when you get home--even it’s just for a few minutes. Put a hold on all distractions to read a chapter of your favorite book or hop on the treadmill for thirty minutes. In addition to helping you destress, this personal time is perfect for winding down before you climb into Beforebed.your head hits the pillow at night, make sure your bedroom is your sanctuary. But don’t just stop at your phone: Turn off your iPod, laptop and tablet, too. While you would think that straining your eyes would make them more tired, keeping your laptop open means you’ll spend more time on Netflix instead of in dreamland. Worried about starting a new job or the state of your finances? Sniff some valerian root. Convinced that car repair will totally empty your savings? Try some lavender oil. These aromas will relax your mind so that you can finally get some sleep.

STYLETOME.COM | 59 Ah, September. The kids are back in school, the weekends are packed with activities, and you’re running amuck trying to get everything done--even if it means sacrificing sleep. You know you’re supposed to get the recommended eight hours a night, but your life (and your brain) just aren’t allowing it. Luckily, we’ve got you covered.

While men can toss back a beer before bed and sleep like a baby, studies show that women who do the same have a harder time sleeping.

So you’ve cut the caffeine, but an afterhours drink at your favorite pub won’t cause any harm, right? Wrong. Ladies, this one’s especially for you: Cut out the bedtime booze.

(and we know you don’t want to hear this), you need to cut the caffeine. Stick to a cup of your favorite brew in the morning, but halt all coffee consumption after lunch. If you’re a regular Starbucks junkie, you may feel like your venti triple-shot latte only gave you enough energy for one hour. In actuality, your first cup of caffeine is more than enough to get you through the day, whether or not you want to admit it. On average, one cup of coffee should stay in your system for around seven to eight hours--enough to get you out of bed and through your workday. Same rules apply to you, soda and energy drinkers: One and done.

Sure, the end of summer might make you a bit crankier than usual (who would want to stop going to the beach every day?), but your sour mood may be related to your lack of sleep. Those who get little sleep or suffer from insomnia typically have short fuses, terrible memory and an insatiable hunger. Does that sound like you? If so, it’s time to start taking your health seriously. Lack of sleep can lead to weight gain, depression, and inflammation, which in turn can cause premature aging, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and arthritis. Staying on top of your schedule is important, but it’s not worth the health risks and mood changes that insomnia can cause. But don’t worry, these tips and tricks are sure to help you finally catch some Firstz’s.

Aromas aren’t only used for helping you sleep at night. If you’re still struggling to hold up your eyelids at work the next morning, some natural scents will give you a little pick-me-up (no, it’s not the coffee bean--keep dreaming).

HEALTH

Pop a peppermint in your mouth or squeeze a few drops of lemon into your ice water at lunch for an energy burst. This is the healthy way to keep you moving forward, especially if you’re sure you won’t last another 30 minutes without a Red Bull. And yeah, you might not need that triple-shot latte after all!

Through a prepaid legal program, an individual or group pays a premium, something like health insurance, to receive such services as free consultations and advice, with prescribed fees for follow-up services. Before hiring an attorney or before you even think you might need one, you should check to see if your employer, union or other organization of which you are a member offers a prepaid legal service plan as a Mostbenefit.areas in Florida also have legal aid and public defender offices, which provide legal help without cost or at a nominal fee to people who cannot afford to pay a lawyer. Legal aid offices provide advice in some non-criminal cases such as those relating to small money claims for wages; disputes between borrowers and lenders; landlord-tenant problems; and domestic relations matters. Public defender offices handle criminal cases for indigent people.

To begin, consider a lawyer’s reputation. Have you heard people speak highly of a particular attorney’s talents or work? Think about your acquaintances who are, or may know, lawyers. Ask those who work with attorneys in their profession, or someone whose opinion you respect — an employer, lawyer at your workplace, banker, teacher, minister, doctor or other professional, relative, neighbor or friend.

Make a careful search for your lawyer; it’s an important decision. Your goal should be to find a lawyer you are comfortable with as a person and as a professional. Many legal matters involve personal considerations, and your lawyer often will need to know confidential information about you, your family and your finances to be truly effective in serving you.

HOW DO I FIND A LAWYER?

The best recommendations often come from people who hired a lawyer to successfully resolve a problem similar to yours. Another check you can do is to see if the attorney has a discipline history — meaning the person has received a professional discipline for violating the Rules Regulating The Florida Bar. You can find out this information by going to the attorney’s profile page on The Florida Bar website. Once the attorney’s page appears, scroll down until you see the words: ‘10-Year Discipline History.’ If there is no discipline, the word ‘None’ will appear to the right of the name. If there is a history, the word ‘Yes’ will appear, with a link to documents regarding the discipline. You can use that information to ask the attorney about this episode. You also may call 866-352-0707 and follow the prompts to check a lawyer’s discipline history.

A new and growing development in Florida and other states is the prepaid legal services plan.

Lists of recommended attorneys are also circulated within special interest groups.

Aside from this information, some lawyers are now using consumer advertising on radio, television, newspapers, magazines, in other media and on the web to inform the public of their services and charges for certain routine legal matters.

First, make sure the person you are considering hiring is an attorney. You can do this by going to The Florida Bar website at www.floridabar.org.

In your preliminary research, you should focus on compiling a list of the names of lawyers who may be qualified to handle your case. Your ‘follow-up’ research will include making phone calls to those lawyers’ offices then visiting one or a few to find the attorney you want to handle your case.

Florida has more than 85,000 licensed lawyers practicing in the state. How do you know which one is right for you?

Focused on Client Wins when Buying or Selling a Business.

Helping business owners efficiently navigate legal complexities so they can focus on maximizing their business and achieving their goals is why Edgar has enjoyed practicing law for the past 30 years. Contributing to a winning team as a valued member is what drew him to leave his job in finance as a commercial banker and pursue a career in corporate law. Now, as a corporate partner in L&G Law Group’s Florida office, he feels he has found where he can have the greatest impact on the lives of his clients. “Business owners often struggle to find an experienced advisor they can trust to successfully manage the ‘last, great test of entrepreneurship,’ transitioning their business,” he notes.

Edgar B. Reilly

ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM | 69Special Promotional Feature ATTORNEYS OF THE YEAR Orlando’s

Although Mr. Reilly represents clients on the full spectrum of financial and corporate matters, Edgar sees another level of purpose when he helps someone (or a family) transition a business to a new owner. “For an entrepreneur, selling their business is very personal and the process is almost more transformational for the whole family than merely a business transaction,” he notes.

gap and risk to business owners that Edgar is working to mitigate for clients. Using his unique perspective gained from a varied legal and business background having worked as a commercial lender, large firm corporate attorney and lead in-house counsel, he helps clients address the difficult issues. Sometimes there is a reality check that needs to take

In 2016, when Edgar moved with his family from Chicago to Orlando, he wasn’t sure how active the Central Florida market was for entrepreneurs and was pleasantly surprised. His mergers and acquisitions practice is split nearly evenly between representing buyers and sellers with transaction valuations spanning a wide range from $1 - $200 million. He has represented numerous owners in Florida selling their businesses to buyers representing large publicly-traded companies, other privately-held businesses, financial investors and next generation entrepreneurs. “Every situation is unique and that’s exciting, but, more importantly, every situation is the same because it involves people working on something extremely important to them – it may be the culmination of their life’s work - and that’s meaningful.” Edgar notes that he truly feels honored when close friends trust him with the transition of their most important financial asset – whether it’s representing his martial arts training partner or his college roommate (both are clients), the personal relationships that are deepened are incredibly Thererewarding.isaplanning

events forcing an urgent (and discounted) sale. In other cases, he points to the study from the Exit Planning Institute that although 76% of private companies plan to transition ownership within 10 years, out of this same group, 83% report that they don’t have a formal plan to accomplish a transition. Also, most owners admit they don’t understand all their exit options, how different alternative transaction structures work or the varying challenges between internal buyers (family, management or co-owners) and external buyers (strategic or private equity). Edgar says, “That is where a good team of advisors makes life much easier for an owner if they work efficiently together. In my experience, when the accountant, lawyer and other professionals understand the business and focus on the needs of the owner, you maximize the after-tax proceeds and minimize stress on the people and business. And that’s how we win.”

Education and Admissions: Mr. Reilly received his undergraduate business degree in finance from the University of Notre Dame in 1987 and his Juris Doctorate from The Law School at the University of Chicago in 1995. John's accomplishments have earned him recognition and honors over the years. He has achieved the highest AV rating by Martindale Hubbell, and he is ranked by Chambers USA. John has been named one of America's Best Lawyers, as Florida Legal Elite for Marital and Family Law by Florida Trend, and has been named a Super Lawyer for 10 consecutive years. By invitation, John is a member of the National Advocates "Top 100."

John W. Foster

Attorney John Foster is one of Orlando's top family law attorneys. His passion, mixed with his decades of experience, allows him to offer his clients service that is hard to compare. As president of Family Complex Litigation and Collaborative Group (FCLC Group), John works with a fierce dedication to serving every client. "Our clients are more than just clients. They are people who come to us for help, and we want to deliver on our promise that we are your lawyers from start to finish," says John.

Before directing his focus exclusively to family law, John litigated numerous state and federal cases and appeals that put him in direct contact with sophisticated businesspersons, entrepreneurs, and general or corporate counsel responsible for litigation management. In many divorce and family law cases, the business entities with which a spouse is employed or involved may be added as parties or may become entangled in the discovery process. John's background and experience place him in a unique position for remaining sensitive to the impact of divorce on his client's business interests.

Born and raised in the Orlando area, John has deep roots in his community. With more than 41 years of complex litigation experience, he is positioned to handle divorce and family law cases in the Orlando area and beyond. His practice now focuses exclusively on the resolution of complex divorce and family law cases, whether resolved through settlement, the litigation process and trial, mediation, the collaborative process, or the appellate process. In addition, John works with matters involving alimony, child support, custody, divorce, paternity, property division, and other marital and familyrelated issues.

John is actively involved in the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar Association. He currently serves on the Family Law Section's Executive Council and Legislation Committee and is a member of the Children's Issues Committee and the Domestic Violence Committee. John also served as Chair of the Health & Wellness Committee of the Family Law Section of the Florida Bar Association, a committee designed to promote the health and wellness of members who passionately serve Florida's families in their family law matters.

Another topic John is highly passionate about is recovery from addiction. After a long battle with addiction, his son finally found recovery. However, in 2013, a year and a half into his recovery, his son relapsed and fatally overdosed. John channels his passion for recovery by remaining involved in the recovery world. He is fortunate to be a founding member of Mind, Body & Soul Recovery Housing (“soberlivingorlando.com”), which owns and operates sober-living homes in the Orlando area. John is also a founder of The Mind, Body & Soul Surfing Club’s Recovery Foundation, which is a 501(c) (3) entity that raises charitable donations for recovery from addiction through events like the annual Run for Recovery, which will be held in Orlando at Lake Baldwin on Saturday, November 5, 2022.

"Addiction can affect anyone, no matter age, race, socioeconomic status, or location," says John. "While death is the reality of addiction, life is the reality of recovery. Our goal is to give someone a chance and help them find life through recovery."

I joined EXP Realty Brokerage, an innovative and growing publiclytraded company, and became one of their Certified Mentors in a short time.

A few years ago, I launched a real estate company called Surgent Capital – a commercial real estate investment company with offices in Florida and New York. At the same time, I attended the MIT School of Architecture and Planning to learn more about Commercial Real Estate Analysis and Investment. This helping me on the residential analysis side and I learned the value of residential investing.
