and sky—all synchronized to a set of joyful tunes. It’s a world you truly must see to believe and it’s not too late for you to embrace this one-of-a-kind experience for the last time. Get nostalgic with us and catch this glorious holiday extravaganza before it bids a fond farewell on January 3rd.
“SHAKEN, NOT STIRRED” On October 24th, the charity-focused culinary festival Cows ‘n Cabs returned to Winter Park for their 5th annual event. Cows ‘n Cabs is a country-themed evening full of delicious food, specialty wine and spirits, and craft beer. Curated by ABC Fine Wine & Spirits’ David Larue and Chef John Rivers of 4 Rivers Smokehouse, Cows ‘n Cabs is one of Central Florida’s best food and wine tasting events. Hay bales, corn husks and a live country band set the tone as attendees sipped and sampled fare from some of Orlando’s best chefs and wine/beer vendors. The festival showcased a selection of 20 invite-only restaurants through unlimited tastes of their best dishes. Anheuser-Busch, Southern Wine & Spirits and ABC Fine Wine & Spirits contributed to the evening with more than 200 wines, spirits and craft beers samplings. One hundred percent of ticket sale proceeds and auction items benefitted the Community Food & Outreach Center and Elevate Orlando. The Sixth Annual Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort returned from October 30th-31st to showcase a vast array of tasty food and beverage options along with informative seminars conducted by members of the hotel’s award-winning food and beverage team. One of the highlights of this fun-filled evening was the appearance of celebrity chef Todd English, who chatted with the attendees as they enjoyed some of his amazing recipes. Attendees of The Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic enjoyed food and beverage seminars, live entertainment, beer garden and more than 40 food and beverage stations featuring appetizing selections from both around the world and right from the hotel’s very own
signature restaurants including Shula’s Steak House, Il Mulino New York Trattoria and Todd English’s bluezoo. This fantastic event is a not-to-be missed-event, so look out for it next year! I don’t care how old you are, we’ve all imagined what life would be like as a spy! For some of us, our inner child never let go of that dream. Fortunately Eddie V’s and Belvedere came to the rescue with their Spectre premiere celebration. Eddie V’s Prime Seafood is known for their fresh, prime seafood and premium hand-carved steaks, but on November 2nd they were known for throwing a “Shaken, not stirred” evening of Bond-inspired revelry. Guests were invited to enter the world of secret agent 007 at an exclusive cocktail party celebrating the upcoming premier of the 24th James Bond Film. Attendees made their way through the red carpet entrance alongside an iconic Aston Martin and enjoyed live performances of music from the movies. Eddie V’s mixologists from around the country crafted Bondinspired cocktails as part of a competition to attend the film’s LA or Miami premiere. Just like seasons come and go, so do some of Central Florida’s most beloved traditions. The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights has delighted thousands over the past 20 years, but the lights will disappear for good after the beginning of the new year in order to make room for new park additions Toy Story Land and Star Wars Land. Presented by Siemens, this brilliant exhibition of splendor of millions of dancing lights line the Streets of America at Hollywood Studios. From dusk till park close, captivating guests of all ages through the vibrant, undulating lights that shimmer upon the backlot streets 22 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
The largest annual event in Orlando returned last month and it was bigger and better than ever! Located in the heart of downtown, Fall Fiesta in the Park is held on the first full weekend of every November. From the 7th8th, Orlando’s longest running event created community through art and displayed the beauty of fall time weather at Lake Eola with 400 artists and crafters. Fall Fiesta in the Park draws more people annually than the Super Bowl, Daytona 500 and Austin City Limits with approximately 250,000 people walking through the event over the two-day duration. For its 45th anniversary, the annual Fall Fiesta in the Park once again brought family and pet friendly arts and entertainment to downtown Orlando while promoting local urban development in the city and through the Orlando Community & Youth Trust. It’s that time of year again! Presented by Council of 101, the beloved Festival of Trees returned to the Orlando Museum of Art from November 14th-22nd to fill the halls with all the best that Christmas has to offer. From extravagant, designerdecorated trees and breathtaking displays of wreaths to tabletop trees and gingerbread masterpieces. Everyday was filled with thrills and joy as families, singles and friends of all ages came to see the daily entertainment, get an early start on their holiday shopping, enter exciting chances to win prizes and much more. Themed days such as Military Appreciation Day allowed Council of 101 the opportunity to say “thank you for your service” to military personnel, veterans and their families. Other special events included Festival Salutes Seniors Day and The Reindeer Romp Children’s Party where the whole family enjoyed a fun-filled evening of holiday excitement, Santa visits, children’s entertainment and activities. The evening before the grand opening, Council of 101 hosted A Gala to Remember, an elegant evening of dining and dancing celebrating the opening of the 2015 Festival of Trees and fifty years of service benefiting the Orlando Museum of Art. Happy Golden Anniversary! Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

THREE UNIQUE HOLIDAY COCKTAILS WORTH TOASTING TO By Diane Zeise
SPIKED HOLIDAY EGGNOG FOR TWO You may be wondering how this seemingly traditional holiday drink (pictured) made it on our list. While generally spiked with rum, bourbon, or brandy, we’ve added a dash of sherry to add a swift kick to Grandma’s favorite seasonal indulgence. Here’s what you’ll need: 2 eggs | 3 oz sugar | ½ tsp freshly grated nutmeg | 2 oz pisco | 6 oz whole milk | 4 oz heavy cream | freshly grated nutmeg for garnish To avoid scrambling your eggs, you’ll want to use a slow speed blender to create the perfect consistency. Blending the eggs first, follow by slowly combining the sugar and nutmeg before adding the pisco, sherry, milk and cream. Once your concoction is thoroughly combined, seal it and place it in the refrigerator to set overnight. With a little bit of patience and a touch of holiday cheer, serve your eggnog in a chilled glass garnished with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg. Looking to order a non-traditional eggnog? Highball & Harvest at the Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes offers a “Southern Oats” Cocktail that’s worthy of a brodate or a girls’ night out. FIG THYME FOR ONE I’d consider this cocktail the grown up version of that famous line from “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.” Forget the Figgy Pudding, I’ll take this cocktail with a sprig of fresh thyme, please and thank you. For the cocktail: 1 ½ oz pisco | ¼ oz Cointreau | ½ oz thyme simple syrup* | ½ oz lime juice | 1 fig (quartered) | sprig of thyme and ½ fig for garnish For the *syrup: ½ cup sugar | ½ cup water | 5 sprigs of thyme
With the scent of fresh evergreen and holiday cookies in the air, and the sounds of carolers echoing outside, what better way to usher in the holidays than with a decadent seasonal cocktail? Whether you’re the host of an extravagant party or simply looking to warm your soul, Orlando Style’s spreading cheer with three unique cocktails to toast the holiday and the start of a new year! 26 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
This drink may have a few more steps to it, but once you’re enveloped in the aromatic dance of fig and thyme, you’ll be in the mood for some midnight caroling and online holiday shopping. Let’s begin with the syrup. Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan and stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves. At this point, you’ll want to add the thyme and allow your syrup to simmer for 10 minutes. Cool the syrup before pouring it in your drink. The cocktail is a simpler feat. Place your ripe fig and fresh thyme in a mixing glass and muddle before adding ice

WHETHER YOU’RE THE HOST OF AN EXTRAVAGANT PARTY OR SIMPLY LOOKING TO WARM YOUR SOUL, ORLANDO STYLE’S SPREADING CHEER WITH THREE UNIQUE COCKTAILS TO TOAST THE HOLIDAY AND THE START OF A NEW YEAR! and the remaining ingredients. Shake and double strain your drink into a decadent cocktail glass before garnishing with your thyme sprig and remaining fig. In the mood for a thyme of fig infused drink but not ready to break out the barware? Slate on Sandlake Road makes an incredible thyme cocktail called “The Thyme Traveler” with a delicious citrus vodka, plum bitters and fresh thyme. Their “(Rye)teous Fig” cocktail, made with fig jam, is a sweet alternative to a classic cocktail. SINGLE HOLIDAY POP COCKTAIL Perhaps the most visually festive cocktail of the three, this fancy drink is the perfect companion for ringing in the New Year. Homemade grenadine and seasonal lemons are the key to this simple work of art. For the grenadine: 4 oz pomegranate juice | 4 oz fine granulated sugar
For the cocktail: 1 ½ oz vodka of your choice | ¼ oz homemade grenadine | ½ oz lemon juice | 2 oz sparkling apple cider | lemon twist or pomegranate seeds for garnish While I’ve chosen fresh pomegranate for the grenadine, fresh pomegranate juice is an acceptable substitute. Juice the pomegranate and pour the entire contents (yes, even the seeds) through a strainer. Now add fine granulated sugar to the juice until you reach your desired consistency and stir until the sugar dissolves. Allow your fresh grenadine to chill in the refrigerator. After the grenadine is chilled to your liking, pour it into a highball glass and fill the glass halfway with ice. Now, carefully focus on pouring the vodka over the ice and not directly into the grenadine so that the alcohol creates a distinct second layer on top of the syrup. After juicing the lemon for the drink, take the shell and squeeze it face down into your glass - you’ll want the shell to sit snugly in order to create a seal for the
remaining liquids. Finally, add the lemon juice and the sparkling cider and garnish with a twist of lemon or pomegranate seeds. After admiring your craftsmanship and before drinking, use a straw or spoon to release the lemon and mix the layers for a delicious party worthy alternative to sparkling wine or Champagne. For photos and detailed instructions for each cocktail, visit www.OrlandoStyleMagazine.com. Please, drink responsibly this holiday season. May you spend your days with close friends and family, may your nights be warm, and may your holidays be merry and bright.

CHEF ANDRES MENDOZA AT HOME AT NORMAN’S had other plans in store. Soon after the dishwashing job, Mendoza became a busser for Houlihan’s. Day after day, the inquisitive Mendoza would ask so many questions about the kitchen that the chef began to give him small, basic tasks to help with such as peeling potatoes. As Mendoza continued to work in small kitchens doing basic prep, he began to fall deeper and deeper in love with cooking. His curiosity and craving for more knowledge on why things were done a certain way eventually led him to enroll in Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts. Halfway through his education, Mendoza got his first fine dining job as a line cook for Citricos restaurant. Two years later, Mendoza entered Norman’s kitchen for the first time and his life would change forever. “As soon as I walked inside, I realized Norman’s was my place to be. The smells in the kitchen were so familiar and reminded me of my past. The ingredients and the flavors reminded me of my home and my culture.” -A.M. Mendoza immediately accepted a position at Norman’s as Chef de Partie and in time, worked his way up to Executive Chef. Although Mendoza has been with Norman’s for four years, the deep passion with which he still discusses cooking and working at the fine dining establishment is beautifully genuine and truly contagious. In simple, heartfelt words Mendoza conveyed to me the incredible adoration, love and reverence he has for his job. His heart beats in a thousand different ways for cooking and if there’s truth to the idiom “home is where the heart is,” then Mendoza’s home will always be Norman’s. I’m sure it also helps that right now is one of the most exciting times in Norman’s recent history. Chef Norman Van Aken, who is widely regarded as the founding father of New World Cuisine, says it’s time to refresh and dress the 13-year-old restaurant with significant changes that will allow his guests to become reanimated. It began last year when Norman’s beautifully remodeled their patio to create the new outdoor space by the golf course. Now they’re continuing the transition by renovating the lounge with more modern furniture and creating a dramatic new wine room for intimate group tastings. There is so much more on the horizon for Norman’s and 2016 is set to be an exciting year for many reasons. The new year will also bring about the highly anticipated grand opening of Van Aken’s brand new restaurant 1921 by Norman Van Aken.
FROM HUMBLE DISHWASHER TO EXECUTIVE CHEF OF NORMAN’S AT THE RITZ-CARLTON ORLANDO, GRANDE LAKES By Riesa Pascal If you’ve had the unparalleled experience of dining at Norman’s at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, then you may have also had the pleasure of meeting Norman’s Executive Chef Andres Mendoza. For anyone who hasn’t, please allow me to introduce this impassioned man to you. Originally from Mexico, Mendoza began cooking at just 14 years old with his mother and grandmother. At 20 years old, he moved to the United States with his family and got a job as a dishwasher for Marriott.
MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT COOKING IS JUST SOMETHING COOL TO DO, BUT IT’S SOMETHING WONDERFUL. IT’S ALMOST MAGICAL.
“That was my very first professional kitchen and I just loved the atmosphere. I would always look at the chefs with the long hats and think about how amazing their job was.” -A.M. Despite his immense respect for the craft of cooking, Mendoza had only seen it as his hobby. The thought of becoming a chef was so far removed that he had chosen to study marketing in college. Fortunately, for all current and future diners at Norman’s, the universe ultimately

“We are very pleased to continue our love affair with Florida and in this case, the city of Mount Dora. It harkens us back to the little town we’re from in Illinois.” -N.V.A 1921 by Norman Van Aken is set to open in early 2016, is being built in a historic building created by the Modernism Museum. The beautiful building, which has been in downtown Mount Dora since 1921, proved to be the perfect location for Van Aken to express his cuisine in new ways while forming a creative collaboration with the museum, which is located right across from the restaurant. While Norman’s at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes has dishes with a strong Latin Caribbean feel, the new restaurant will be inspired by more Floridian Southern fare although Van Aken says the Latin Caribbean leaning will still be present as that’s simply part of his DNA. The new restaurant will also establish a more casual atmosphere, while still maintaining Norman’s dedication to excellent service and driven search for high quality ingredients. “I’ve got a whole new collection of dishes that I’m here to showcase and we can do that with the new restaurant and we’re looking forward to it.” -N.V.A Van Aken is also in the process of writing a book titled Norman Van Aken’s Florida Kitchen that will be published in one to oneand-a-half years, but let’s not get too ahead of ourselves as we discuss all the exciting times to come. While it’s always stirring to look ahead to the future at this time of year, it’s just as important to slow down and appreciate the present season we’re in. If you’re finding that difficult to do with all the stress of the holidays, Norman’s three-course prix fixe Christmas menu just might be your

perfect remedy. The menu seeks to focus on traditional holiday foods and combines a celebration of different cultures all into one tasty menu. From Mexican and Caribbean to Puerto Rican and American, the incredible Christmas and New Year’s prix fixe menus are ones that you’ll have to see (and taste!) for yourself this holiday season. “We like to focus on feelings whenever we are creating a new dish or menu. We try to pull something from our backgrounds: What do you miss from your country? What do you miss from your childhood? What did you used to cook with mom? What did you used to eat with grandma? We answer those questions and then take it to a fine dining level.” -A.M. I underestimated the impact our conversations would have on me. I left with a renewed appreciation for the importance of food and the feelings that it can bring. In the hustle and bustle of our busy lives, it’s easy to forget that cooking and food is so much more than just a means of survival. It’s about the families and loved ones that it brings together. It’s about the great moments that it inspires. An experience with good food can become forever intertwined with your memories and instantly come rushing back to you with a just simple smell. “Many people think that cooking is just something cool to do, but it’s something wonderful. It’s almost magical. It’s inspirational. I will always say that I was chosen by the kitchen because that’s how I feel. I got into a job in the kitchen almost by mistake and I never left and I’m not planning to leave the kitchen anytime soon. My house is Norman’s. This is my home.” -A.M.

Check out Chef Andres Mendoza’s recipe for dessert cajeta flan in order to bring a little piece of Norman’s to your own home this holiday season!
CAJETA FLAN Ingredients:
5 whole eggs • 4 egg yolks • 2 cups sugar • 1 can evaporated milk (12 oz. can) • 1 ¼ cup whole milk • 1 tsp. vanilla extract • 1 cup cajeta (goat’s milk caramel) • 1 cake pan 9” or 6-8 ramekins.
Method:
1. Pre-heat your oven to 350°. 2. In a non-corrosive sauce pan combine 1 cup of sugar and a little water (just enough to form a wet sand). 3. Melt the sugar at medium to high heat stirring often until the caramel reaches a light amber color. Pour the caramel into the cake pan or ramekins. Use caution, the caramel is very hot! 4. In a Blender add the eggs, egg yolks, whole milk, evaporated milk, vanilla extract, cajeta and the rest of the sugar and blend until smooth. 5. Pour the mix into the cake pan and let the custard rest for about 20 minutes. 6. Set the cake pan into a large baking pan and pour hot water until it reaches about half way. 7. Bake for about 30 to 40 minutes for the small ramekins and 40 minutes to an Hour for the cake pan. 8. To tell if the flan is done, gently shake the pan. If the flan jiggles it needs more time, about five to ten more minutes. They are done when the flan does not jiggle when shaken or when a paring knife inserted into the center comes out clean. 9. Once the flan is done remove them from the water and let it cool down at room temperature. 10. Refrigerate overnight before serving. 11. Serve with your desired seasonal fruits and whipped cream. Note: The cajeta can be found in Hispanic or Mexican supermarkets.

WICKED DOLPHIN RUM By George Kanaw
honey provides a glorious nose of sweet orange blossoms, leaving you reminiscing to a long drive down the rural roads of yesteryear. Strong notes of spice, along with sweet orange and honey, pair perfectly with ginger beer or a classic cola. Wicked Dolphin’s Silver Rum has a nice clean finish with the plea: “bring back the classic Daiquiri!” This particular liquor spends much of its life in once used bourbon barrels for a cleaner finish. With a lighter and more cocktail friendly taste profile, the Wicked Dolphin Coconut Rum is standing proud on its own. A safe guarded secret, all natural ingredients, and real coconut water will help the newest addition to the Wicked Dolphin portfolio bring both whiskey and scotch drinkers to the rum world. Resting comfortably in bourbon barrels over the last three years, Wicked Dolphin’s “Gold Reserve” is finally ready to break into the market. I would be willing to bet that any scotch drinker would love to have a bottle of this on the table with one cube of ice in a Reidel whisky tumbler. The fact that we have access to a top tier rum made in our own backyard is something this native can proudly stand behind. I was even given the chance to taste a special project direct from barrel with “Cigar City” in its name. When this new liquor is made available to you, take my advice: hunt it down and keep it close. Spending a day with this proud rum family at their Cape Coral based distillery opened my eyes to begin looking more into where my spirits are made and how they are created. Check out this cool weather worthy cocktail from Wicked Dolphin Rum:
DRINK LOCAL! DRINK LOCAL! You can almost hear the statement being shouted from the rafters at a rum distillery down in Cape Coral, Florida. The motto of this family run business is “local is better,” and they might be on to something. From the exact sugar and fruit to the local honey used, the distillers behind Wicked Dolphin Rum are proudly offering us a craft spirit that highlights all Florida has to offer. I had a chance to see not only how they make this award winning spirit but also why Florida natives and tourists alike are beginning to pay attention to what ingredients are really being used in their favorite cocktail. Wicked Dolphin Rum was started in 2012 when an adopted native of Cape Coral was brave enough to ask one important question: “why is there no rum made in Florida?” JoAnn Elardo, the founder of Wicked Dolphin, began researching and found that over half of the sugar in the U.S. is provided by The Sunshine State. And, what is the main ingredient that good rum relies on? You guessed it... sugar. With 98% of all rums being imported from Puerto Rico, Barbados and the Virgin Islands, JoAnn set down the not so easy road of establishing a Florida home for a rum distillery. With Elardo’s launching of both the Wicked Dolphin Florida Spiced and Wicked Dolphin Florida Silver in 2012, Florida welcomed the start of a new trend: locally crafted spirits. Wicked Dolphin sources their rum base from fertile fields of locally grown sugar cane located only 25 miles down the road from their distillery. Every bottle of Wicked Dolphin Spiced Rum offers a sweet retreat to a time before the urban sprawl, when orange groves grew for acres as far as the eye could see. Just a whiff of Florida oranges and local

Pour all the ingredients in a tin with ice and shake well. Strain your cocktail into a chilled glass and garnish with a lemon or orange wedge.

FERRAR F12TDF
THE F12TDF IS A CONCENTRATION OF TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS WHICH INVOLVE ALL THOSE AREAS CENTRAL TO FERRARI’S DNA

TOYS
The Ferrari F12tdf pays homage to the
Tour de France, the legendary endurance road race that Ferrari dominated in the 1950s and ‘60s, particularly with the 1956 250 GT Berlinetta which won four consecutive editions in a row. It was a race that rewarded cars that combined maximum performance with the driveability and ease of use that enabled the competitors to race for hundreds of kilometres a day over fast, tortuous roads and on circuits. The F12tdf is the ultimate expression of the concept of an extreme road car that is equally at home on the track, and just 799 will be built. The F12tdf is a concentration of technical innovations which involve all those areas central to Ferrari’s DNA: engine, aerodynamics and vehicle dynamics. As a result, in terms of acceleration, roadholding and agility, the new berlinetta is second to none.
HP/LITER: 122.2 WEIGHT: 3120 LB PRODUCTION: 799 ASPIRATION: NATURAL ENGINE: 6.3 LITER V12 0-62MPH: 2.9 SECONDS HP: 770 HP @ 8500 RPM TOP SPEED: OVER 211 MPH TORQUE: 520 LB-FT @ 6750 RPM
The F12tdf ’s performance is assured by the 780 cv, naturally-aspirated V12 derived directly from the F12berlinetta’s multi-awardwinning engine. The car’s exhilarating dynamic behaviour, specifically its lateral acceleration in corners, is due to an 8% increase in the ratio of the front tyres compared to the rear ones. The car’s natural tendency to oversteer as a result of the change in tyre sizes is compensated for by the innovative rear-wheel steering system – known as the Virtual Short Wheelbase, which is integrated with the other vehicle dynamic control systems – that guarantees the steering wheel response times and turn-in of a competition car while increasing stability at high speed. Cornering speeds are also higher thanks to the significant increase in downforce – +87% – which has reached unprecedented levels for a front-engined V12 berlinetta. A radical redesign of the bodywork, interior, engine, transmission and running gear, along with the abundant use of carbon-fibre inside and out, has slashed 110 kg off the car’s overall weight. All of these factors combine to produce record performance figures: 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7.9 seconds in addition to a substantial boost in lateral acceleration. The F12tdf laps Fiorano in just 1’21”.
51 STYLETOME.COM
Designed by the Ferrari Styling Centre, the new F12tdf has particularly imposing yet sensual forms, the product of Ferrari’s continuous commitment to melding sculptural beauty with functional demands. All of the bodywork panels, from the chiselled nose to the tail, have been revised. Wider front and rear tracks also give the car an even more aggressive stance. In terms of the formal design language, the objective was to create a sophisticated interaction between the sculptural surfaces of the F12berlinetta and a more graphic treatment of the various new aerodynamic features. The best testament to this intent is the evolution of the Aerobridge, the design of which is further enhanced by the use of bare carbon-fibre. Developed in such a technical manner, this component combines with the other details in creating a coherent aesthetic approach to the whole car. The car’s uncompromising sportiness is expressed with the same degree of purity in the deliberately Spartan cockpit. The wrap-around effect that embraces the driving position is intensified by the use of carbon-fibre housings for the instruments and satellite pods. The door panels have been pared back to a single carbonfibre shell, while the glove compartment has disappeared to be replaced by simple knee padding. Alcantara rather the traditional leather was chosen for the cabin trim, technical fabric for the seats and patterned aluminium instead of mats for the floor, once again with the aim of saving every last ounce of weight. The F12tdf ’s specification is completed by lightweight alloys with five twinned spokes that are designed to have the narrowest section possible to reduce unsprung weight. Going back to Enzo Ferrari, the company policy on production has been to always manufacture just one less vehicle than what they think there is a market for. Production on this car is capped at 799 units, and you can expect them to move fast.

Still riding high on the success of 2014’s The Lego Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy, which was swiftly followed by this year’s smash hit Jurassic World—2015 seemed to be the year of Chris Pratt. We can only expect even more success from this rising star, but one cannot help but wonder who the next up-and-coming celeb will be? Who will make the biggest impact in 2016? Who will be the powerful star on the tips of every tongue this time next year? Here are six celebrities who were thrown into the spotlight train this year and have made it clear that they’re riding it high into 2016!
Scott Eastwood When you happen to be the offspring of one of the most iconic names in movie history, a lot of pressure comes from the public eye to follow in that parent’s footsteps. For Clint Eastwood’s son, the apple definitely doesn’t fall far from the tree. The 29-year-old first appeared on the acting scene under the name Scott Reeves to avoid nepotism, but now, he proudly wears his father’s name. In 2014, Scott Eastwood made waves across the country with his excellent performance in Fury. This year, Eastwood starred in his first major lead role as Luke Collins in the film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ novel, The Longest Ride. Since then Eastwood has been cast alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the upcoming biopic film Snowden and is also set to star in 2016’s Suicide Squad with Cara Delevingne and Will Smith. With his father’s dashing good looks and solid acting skills, Eastwood is definitely someone you want to get on your radar in 2016! Alicia Vikander She may be young, but the stunning Alicia Vikander is proving that she is a force to be reckoned with. The 27-year-old Swedish actress burst onto the scene this year when she bowled over moviegoers with her incredible portrayal of a sexy artificial intelligence robot in this year’s sci-fi thriller Ex Machina. Just a few months later, we got a second taste of Vikander’s raw talent when she gave another solid performance in the action spy movie The Man From U.N.C.L.E. with co-stars Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. It has been quite the busy year for Vikander and 2016 shows no signs of slowing down! Next year, you’ll catch Vikander in the latest Bourne movie installment with Matt Damon and she is also an early favorite to replace Rooney Mara in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo sequel. It’s evident that there is much more on the horizon for this young actress especially in the new year! Cara Delevingne Unless you live under a rock, you should be well aware that this year has been huge for Cara Delevingne as she went from being “that model with the eyebrows” to a recognized and respected actress. The 23-year-old Brit has walked runways for some of the most luxurious brands in the fashion world, but now she is turning her attention to movies and is causing quite a stir. This year Delevingne stunned critics with her strong debut in Paper Towns, the young adult comedy-drama film based on the 2008 novel of the same name by John Green. In 2016, Delevingne will be joining a fellow star on our list by appearing in the upcoming Warner Brothers superhero movie, Suicide Squad. Her huge social media following has had her name on the tip of everyone’s tongue this year, but you can be prepared to see a lot more of Delevingne in 2016.

WHO WILL BE THE POWERFUL STAR ON THE TIPS OF EVERY TONGUE THIS TIME NEXT YEAR?
John Boyega As many actors can confirm, appearing in a franchise movie is the career boost to end all career boost and the Star Wars franchise just might be the biggest of them all. In a move rarely ever seen in Hollywood, the widely unknown John Boyega was cast as one of the lead roles in the new Star Wars reboot set to be released this month. To say Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a highly anticipated film is the understatement of the century. The film has all the ingredients required to cook up a massive hit and the young British actor is beyond fortunate to have a major place in that kitchen! With two more installments to follow, Star Wars: The Force Awakens is sure to shoot the 23-year-old to worldwide fame and Hollywood stardom in 2016. As for Boyega’s actual talent? I guess we’ll have to join the rest of the world at the theatres on December 18th and find out for ourselves! Tori Kelly Our last celebrity on the list isn’t an actress, but she is still taking the world of Hollywood by storm. The 22-year-old YouTube star Tori Kelly joined the likes of Justin Bieber and several others, by breaking into mainstream pop music after her now manager discovered her popular YouTube videos in 2013. Kelly’s debut album, “Unbreakable Smile,” was released this year and went above and beyond projections when it landed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Since then, it’s been a whirlwind of a year for the singer-songwriter. From winning over Las Vegas at the Billboard Music Awards in May to delivering a killer tribute to Smokey Robinson at the BET Awards, which resulted in standing ovations and praise from numerous artists including Snoop Dogg. To top it all off, Kelly walked onto the stage at the 2015 MTV VMAs with only her guitar in hand and completely ditched the usual gimmicky performances to blow over crowds with nothing but her voice and simple, raw talent. It hasn’t been long since Kelly shot from YouTube fame and began her ascent into overnight stardom, but we’re already eager to see what 2016 will bring!
Ezra Miller The talented Ezra Miller stunned audiences in 2011 with his portrayal of a disturbed teen in the acclaimed flick We Need to Talk About Kevin. One year later, Miller further showed off his acting chops by playing the extroverted teenage troublemaker alongside Emma Watson in the coming of age drama, The Perks of Being a Wallflower. This year, Miller broke out of the box yet again with roles in the drama-thriller The Stanford Prison Experiment, and Judd Apatow and Amy Schumer’s comedy Trainwreck. In 2016, Miller will be starring in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them, based on a JK Rowling novel. Oh, and did I mention that Warner Brothers announced that the 23-year-old was cast as the lead role for DC Comics’ feature film The Flash? How appropriate considering Miller’s rise to fame seemed to have occurred in a flash! This kid is more than just your average actor though and it’s become pretty evident that 2016 will be a year that sees Ezra Miller become a household name.

VEGETABLE GARDENS THE APEX TO HEALTHY EATING BY COURTNEY CAGGIANO
When you think
of vegetable gardens, your mind may begin playing a black-and-white film reel of pearl-wearing housewives in the backyard, pulling away the weeds of American topsoil as their husbands are off at war. The times have changed, but gardening has become even more important today than it was in the 1940s. Our nation may not be suffering from a lack of imports, but our internal problems with GMOs and chemically-farmed produce have made organic gardening become a near necessity. Today, most of American produce is treated with pesticides, and 60 percent of all pesticides are carcinogenic. Because pesticides are poisons created to kill living organisms, they can result in harmful effects in humans. Growing your own produce is the safest way to control what is going into your food, and it keeps you free from those nasty chemicals to make sure that you and your veggies remain pure and healthy. However, let’s not resort to recreating your grandmother’s vegetable garden. Gone are the days of growing upside down tomato plants and watering your cucumber vines in aprons and gloves. Between your work schedule, workout routine, and daily activities, you need homegrown veggies that will sustain you with whatever life throws your way—and you’d be surprised: the most unique, healthy vegetables are not difficult to garden yourself. With choice veggies, an extravagant garden is not only a blissful possibility, but a healthful lifestyle improvement that can become your family’s reality. The key to getting the most out of your garden is choosing the right vegetables based on nutritional impact. Rather than opting for the usual carrot or cabbage plants, take your time researching vegetables based on nutrition rather than convenience. With vitamin-rich veggies, your backyard produce paradise will give a whole new meaning to the term “victory garden.” Here are
some of our favorite choices for making other backyard gardens green with envy. MICROGREENS Going all-out with greens is one of the most popular trends in the diet world today, but gardening your own greens is the best way to ensure that you are harvesting them at their peak time for optimal health benefits. Scientists have confirmed that greens and herbs harvested within the first 14 days of their growth cycle have a greater concentration of vitamins and minerals than greens and herbs that are harvested at their fully ripe state. These young greens—called microgreens—are simple to grow: all that is needed is a thin layer of garden soil and regular water and sun exposure. BEETS They may have gotten a sour reputation over the decades, but beets are a delicious and colorful way to fill your diet with a boost of vitamins. This purple beauty is even known as “nature’s multivitamin” and, when eaten regularly, can keep the common cold at bay and reduce the risk of cancer. Also, growing your own beets allows you to enjoy not just the edible root, but the leaves as well, which are packed with nutritional benefits. To add some jewel-toned excitement to a homemade salad, choose to nurture a variety of beets, from Golden and Chioggia to Bull’s Blood. KALE If you have kale plants in your garden, everyone will know you mean business when it comes to gardening. Kale is king 56 STYLETOME.COM
of the greens. This powerhouse veggie does it all, from absorbing free radicals, which helps prevent diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and rheumatoid arthritis, to loading up your immune system with protection from Vitamin C. If the bitterness is a bit rough for you, try Lacinato kale, also known as Dinosaur or Tuscan kale. This sweet, mild version is a delicious alternative to regular kale. QUINOA Even though we’re talking about a garden, that doesn’t mean we have to forget about protein. Quinoa is one of the best vegan sources of protein, and because it is a grain, it is full of fiber as well. What better way to fill your need for fiber than with energy-packed whole grains straight from your backyard? Don’t let the exotic nature of this grain fool you; although this South American treasure is comfortable below the equator, it grows perfectly in home gardens. CHIA Liven up your garden with this energyboosting superfood that serves a variety of purposes in the kitchen. Popular for their high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, Chia seeds have been known to stabilize blood sugar and lower cholesterol, while keeping you satisfied throughout the day. These little wonders are perfect in salads, smoothies, and anything in between, or added to your favorite trail mix and even eaten raw. For best results, soak your Chia seeds after harvesting to stimulate the nutritional content.

WORKOUT DRESS CODE WHEN YOU DRESS FOR SUCCESS IN FREEZING TEMPERATURES, IT’S NEVER TOO COLD TO EXERCISE OUTSIDE! By Riesa Pascal
What is it about winter that makes us lose all our resolve and commitment to exercising? Easy answer—those horribly cold temperatures! Let’s not kid ourselves ladies. We’d all rather cozy up to a fireplace with a cuddle partner and roast some s’mores then go for a jog in near freezing weather. Fortunately my easy question also has an easy solution. Don’t wait till New Year’s to realize you’ve fallen off your exercise wagon. Follow Shesique’s winter workout dress code checklist and you’ll never again have to ask if it’s too cold to exercise outside.
FIRST LAYER Piling on too many thick layers is where most of us go wrong. Over your sports bra you should be wearing a dri fit shirt. As moisture evaporates from your skin it pulls your body heat away with it so the key is to dress so that you’re insulated but not dripping in sweat. A synthetic fabric is best for this base layer as it is more breathable and comfortable then other material such as cotton. For minimal exercise such as light walking, consider donning a simple turtleneck over your dri fit shirt. For more intense activities in colder temperatures, read on!
SECOND LAYER Our friends in Florida have probably stopped reading by now, but for those of us who have to deal with near freezing temperatures, this is for you! Consider pairing your base layer with a fleece or wool top for added warmth when cold temperatures start to kick in. Fleece material is known for its insulation and as an added bonus, you’ll have complete control over how much warmth you receive. Choose the thickness of the second layer depending on the temperatures outside and the intensity of your workout.
THIRD LAYER For our friends up North, I almost want to apologize that this section is relevant to you! When the temperature dips below freezing (I’m cringing just writing that), top off layers one and two with a light jacket. I’ve found that the best wind resistant material for your outer layer is Nylon. It also allows your skin to breath while maintaining the insulation and warmth provided by the first two layers.
FOURTH LAYER If the temperatures are below zero, it’s time to bring in the heavy artillery (and possibly time to move). The fourth layer should be a thin, loosely fitted insulating tee that is worn between the second and third layers. The skin on your face and hands is very sensitive to these temperatures so don’t forget to show those areas some love too! Shield your face with a ski mask and consider mittens to protect your skin from the freezing wind. A warm hat will also prove to be your best friend in times such as these.
BONUS TIP Be careful! Too many layers pose the threat of overheating and exhaustion. If you’re feeling warm and toasty when you step outside, you’re doing it wrong. You should feel cool, but comfortable when you start your workout. As your heart rate increases and you get moving, your body will naturally begin to warm up on its own. Now go out and get your workout on! 58 STYLETOME.COM

THE BENEFITS OF
BY NAOMI SHIF
Looking for an accessible way to enhance
not only internal but external health? You may not need to look much further than your local grocery markets. Fish is noted as one of the longest standing health boosters known to mankind. For centuries those who consumed a high diet of cold water fatty fish have been known to live longer and maintain a higher grade of physical and emotional wellbeing. This is mostly due to the high percentage of omega-3 fatty acids found in this popular superfood. A few of the most respected types of fish loaded with omega-3 fatty acids are wild Alaskan salmon, rainbow trout, and mackerel. But like most studies, any type of fish consumption is better than none at all. If you’re feeling brave, try working sardines into your diet, they are packed with a whopping 61 percent of omega-3’s. If traditional consumption of this food group is not your style, the best alternative would be to supplement fish oil into your everyday diet. Cosmetic benefits include healthier glowing skin, shiny hair and weight control. Omega-3 reduces inflammation throughout the body, which promotes clearer looking skin and it equally acts as a natural moisturizer for those plagued by dry and dull skin.
These aids are medically proven to be the results of the two main acids found in omega-3, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). The best kept secret to shiny luscious hair can also be attributed to elements found in omega-3. This ingredient hydrates new hair follicles, which lead not only to shiny hair but to new and stronger stranded locks. Many people with hair growth issues supplement omega-3 into their existing beauty regime. The most common beautifying known benefit of fish consumption is that it is a low calorie protein builder. New and exciting medical advances have shared insightful powers omega-3 fatty acids have on medical health before and during illness. This notable brain food is no longer just used for dietary intake. According to Tel Aviv University Prof. Pierre Singer of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine, fish oil supplements have been seen to alleviate a level of pain and healing for bedsores and wounds common to those of critical illness. An increased boost in immune system health and anti-inflammatory effects were witnessed among those in the study. Prof. Singer saw, “a modification in the expression of a group of molecules associated with directing leukocytes, or white blood cells,

in the direction of the wound, which could explain the improved healing.” Another new development has been found in the discarded skin of tilapia. One word, collagen. Science writer Becky Crew endorses the study of fish skin use that contains “around 70 percent collagen … and is closer in form and structure to human skin.” Tests have been observed that highly promote the positive use of fish skin for recovery of skin cells. Widely known, heart health is the most common and directly quoted health benefit of fish. Omega-3 has been known to actively lower blood pressure, reduce blood clotting and irregular heartbeats, among others. Feeling the winter blues coming on? Multiple studies with adults have suggested that regular fish consumption may also help treat mild to moderate depression. Maybe all we need is a spoonful of fish oil? As always, please consult with your doctor before adding new supplements and/or starting any new health/diet regimen.

It’s the latest trend
in minimallyinvasive plastic surgery, but does it have the results that you’re paying for? With so many new procedures promising to improve the life and luster of your skin, it can be quite a task to decipher which skin-enhancing treatment is right for you, your budget, and your face. Microneedling—also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), Percutaneous Collagen Induction (PCI), and Skin Needling—is a skin rejuvenation procedure involving fine needles that puncture the skin. Each puncture creates a controlled injury, resulting in a channel that allows the flesh to fill these wounds with new collagen and elastin. This process of neovascularization and neocollagenesis improves the texture and firmness of skin, while also reducing the appearance of scars, large pores, and stretch marks. Now that more and more negative side effects of botox have been discovered, Microneedling has become the new favorite among on-the-rise facial procedures, due largely to the simplicity and speed of the treatment. The popularity of Microneedling can also be traced to its layered benefits of reducing and reversing—and possibly preventing—both wrinkles and scarring. It has even become an often used method of treating photo-aged skin, as it has been known to improve appearance and quality of skin. During the procedure, the epidermis remains intact, so it can be repeated safely on the face, unlike laser treatments that cause possible infection and inflammation of the skin.

COLLAGEN INDUCTION THERAPY

While often one’s greatest strength is one’s greatest weakness, the simplicity of the Microneedling process is what has led to speculation of its long-term benefits and possibly its downfall. Microneedling can be performed without extensive training or expensive equipment, with some single-use systems available for only a few hundred dollars. This cost-effective and easy procedure can be done at home even on sensitive areas, such as around the eyes, mouth, and hands. Relatively pain-free, Microneedling is usually tolerated by those with even

Can Microneedling Improve the Appearance of Wrinkles & Acne Scars? minimal downtime, and the intensity of each treatment can vary depending upon the patient’s tolerance and level of skin damage. An easy at-home treatment of Microneedling may give you the immediate results you are looking for, but don’t fall for its charms too quickly. When not applied by a doctor, Microneedling is prone to resulting in higher infections and scarring than if it were applied professionally. The risk of infection creates further probability for skin-care products to react negatively with skin that has recently begun the process of neocollagenesis. This has been especially true with serums high in Vitamin C, which can create rashes lasting as long as a year. A second, serious concern with at-home Microneedling is the possibility of purchasing devices that have
not been approved by the proper Food and Drug Administration review, as some simple medical devices can be exempt from FDA review if they are similar to devices that have already been made exempt. When treated by a doctor, dermatologist, or a professional, Microneedling procedures can be very effective against wrinkles and acne scars. There is little risk in infection and inflammation, and the needles and devices are usually guaranteed to be high quality and FDA approved. However, do your due diligence when searching for the right doctor, dermatologist or professional who is well versed in this treatment. Professional Microneedling treatments work wonders for sunken areas on the skin that
have been caused by acne, but deep, narrow “icepick” acne scars are nearly impossible for the procedure to remove. Published studies have proven that generally a 60 to 70 percent improvement in broad acne scars can be made within four to six treatments. So the answer is a resounding “yes.” Microneedling is proven to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and acne scars. If you are willing to pay for the professional treatment, you’ll most likely get the results you’ve desired. However, when considering an at-home procedure, which can also work well, just use caution and look for a quality product.

She contrived and fully enforces Sunshine Perinatology’s philosophy of putting patients first and giving them unrushed care. Dr. Tolaymat spends at least 30 minutes with each patient and commutes around 300 miles per week attending to patients in Orange, Polk, and Volusia counties. Additionally, she is the only perinatologist in central Florida available to patients for extended hours during the week and also Saturdays. She and her staff put their best efforts into catering to patients’ needs. Besides English, Dr. Tolaymat’s team can speak Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, and French.
A medical practitioner for over 18 years, Dr. Lama Tolaymat founded Sunshine Perinatology, one of the few central Florida centers specializing in maternal fetal medicine (MFM). MFM, also called perinatology, deals specifically with high-risk pregnancies. Sunshine Perinatology offers patients first-rate care while never treating them as just another statistic. Even as she runs Sunshine Perinatology, Dr. Tolaymat has the privilege of attending to patients in Orlando Health and Florida Hospital, and she appreciates the opportunities given to her by both of these organizations. DON’T MISS THE BEAT
ADELE’S LONG AWAITED RETURN By Courtney Caggiano “Hello, it’s me,” Adele melodically whispers as she breaks the silence with her first single in three quiet years. After bidding farewell to the world for the hope of a restful hiatus, Adele has come out of the shadows and into the light with a “Hello” that has been anticipated by millions and an album that is sure to be this year’s perfect holiday stocking-stuffer for the music lover on your list. Along with breaking the silence, Adele has already begun to break records with her debut single from her latest album, 25. “Hello” is topping the charts in the United States, with 1.11 million digital downloads sold in its first week, making it the first song to sell at least 1 million downloads in a single week. The single also climbed its way to number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 List, which is the first chance for the British songstress to grace the top of the coveted chart. But what took this leading lady from across the pond so long to make her way back into the international limelight that charted her path from age 19? According to the surprisingly private singer, much can happen in a girl’s life between the defining years of 21 and 25. For Adele, these 36 months were some of the most fulfilling, but if you ask her, she probably won’t be quick to mention any of the awards she’s received—not even her Oscar for the film single, “Skyfall.” No, Adele found something in her sabbatical that was more thrilling than red carpet success and paparazzi intrigue. During the past three years, Adele put down the microphone to take a big, deep breath of life.
After her 21 album that defied expectations for a not-quite-mainstream-project won nearly every possible award, critics and fans alike were anxious for the singer to get back to recording sessions for a sensational round three of studio albums. Although this may have seemed like the most strategic move for the Grammy winner, in retrospect, this may have been a nearly impossible feat, due to the legendary status 21 achieved in a single year. With “Rolling in the Deep” gaining the titles of both Record of the Year and Song of the Year, Adele needed new material to craft another masterpiece to follow the shockwave of 21—and this new material needed plenty of room to breathe. On October 19, 2012, Adele welcomed her first child, a baby boy named Angelo, who, although already the owner of a reputation of privacy much like his famous mother, has been identified as the singer’s main reasoning behind her hiding. Angelo’s father, Simon Konecki, also inspired Adele’s hiatus as well as songs from her 25 album. One of the tracks, “Water Under the Bridge,” is unashamedly a love song for the selfexpressive, as Adele shares the weight of wonder that accompanies an unknowingly maturing heart as it realizes the seriousness of love. Songs like this are proof that Adele’s comeback—a term that we’ll be hearing quite a bit of this coming year when it comes to the “Hello” singer—has been well worth the wait. Adele knows as well as her fans that millions of listeners have been waiting for this year’s “Somebody Like You” to give
them a good cry or the next “Rolling in the Deep” to belt out in the car, but Adele’s years of respite taught us all a very inescapable truth of music: for more songs to be written, life must be lived in between. Adele definitely excelled in the art of living before the production of 25, but she might disagree with anyone who calls the past three years her chance to “take a break” and live her life. Unlike most singers, Adele views her career as a hobby, something she does on the side of a very fulfilling life. She herself has stated that she would prefer to release her albums, live quietly in public for a few years at a time, then return to the solace of her life behind the scenes. For now, Adele is a mother first and an artist second, and motherhood looks lovely on the always fashionable star—who would probably object to the use of the stylish adjective. Adele, who is quite comfortable in converse and oversized sweaters, has enjoyed trading arenas and music halls for supermarkets and community parks. Although she may not look the part of a dolled-up Grammy winner every day, Adele has chosen to bask in the glow of her raw appeal, the trait that made the teenage girl from Tottenham as real and relatable as her Cockney accent. That accent that we’ve all come to love is just a hint of that private existence that shapes Adele into the classic songwriter of our time. So let’s hope that she enjoys a break now and then, writes a few more songs, and gets that accent even stronger.

UP CLOSE PERSONAL WITH SISAUNDRA LEWIS By Courtney Caggiano Photo by Edz Antoine
When Sisaundra Lewis walks into the room, her sense of refined grace and feminine strength quickly give away her identity as a woman of talent, for a singer of such a gift must be expected to carry it well. Although, however clearly her glamorous sensibilities testify to the vocal prowess that made her a household name on NBC’s The Voice, behind Sisaundra’s allure and her ability to which it alludes lies a truthful tenderness that is rare in even the most humble of women.
Orlando Style sat down with The Voice star to discuss her television experience, current music ventures, and how life as a preacher’s kid shaped the singer into one of Orlando’s very own icons in the making. Orlando Style: Your season on The Voice was an opportunity singers only dream about. Looking back on your experience, what has the show allowed you to do with your talent and your career? Sisaundra Lewis: I think initially when I was on the show, I thought, “What an incredible platform; what a great way to come back after not being in the industry for so long.” In retrospect, I look back and say that I’m so glad I did it because it ignited back burner dreams in so many people across the country… It has opened up so many doors for me to share my story and also to encourage younger people to start early with their dreams, to be focused and to not let anything stop them. Today it has allowed me to start the Sisaundra Lewis Foundation, and we are basically building the future of fine arts. It turned out to be something greater than I could have ever imagined because what I took with me was my belief and faith that whatever I do, God has a plan for me. OS: How did you find inspiration for your project, The Preacher’s Kid? SL: When I exited the show, I left knowing that I’d done extremely well and it was great to represent my hometown, but I still came home not knowing what kind of music to do. Blake [Shelton] said the same thing, “You can do anything, Sisaundra.” So I did, and then I came home and thought, “What am I going to do with my voice, with my platform?” I just really began to start speaking to a lot of people who I felt were great mentors in my life, and they brought me way back around to, “You’re a preacher’s kid.” OS: Tell us about the creative process behind this project. What will your listeners find in your music? SL: I am a believer, and I take the Lord with me everywhere I go, and I thought, “How can I put this into songs and a message and reach all the people that I’ve met in my lifetime?” I started writing with a producer friend of mine, Tony Hemmings, and we just started writing music that is more from the perspective of being a woman, being a Christian woman, being a single Christian mom with three children, and just the life that I’d had to live. So this new compilation is really about us as people, things that we’ve encountered in life. It’s basically the plight of a woman.
DON’T MISS THE BEAT
OS: What is the Sisaundra Lewis Foundation, and how is it affecting students with talents similar to yours? SL: I created the Sisaundra Lewis Foundation on the premise of how I grew up. I was a migrant worker; we traveled back and forth and there was not very much that we knew. I knew I had this gift, but I didn’t know what to do with it… and so when God gave me this platform, I said, “What can I do to help these children who have these gifts and they just don’t have the slightest idea about what to do with them? I want to find and nurture those talents… to give them a safe environment to grow and nurture their talents and give them advice, to bring people in to counsel them… With our sponsors and donors, we’ve given away scholarships in dance, and I’m teaching a lot of students one-on-one voice, and it’s amazing to watch their voice… I want to help you really identify with your gift. My voice is my best friend; we go everywhere together. I take care of it like you would take care of someone you love because it’s a special gift. OS: What piece of advice would you give to aspiring singers?
SL: It’s not about competing with the person next to you; it’s about competing with your last best. Always just try to excel within yourself as opposed to being better than the next person. I don’t think there’s any comparison in that… If we push ourselves to the max, then we can’t ask for anymore. We all have something to offer, and I want all singers to know that we’re not here to compete with each other; we’re here to encourage and empower each other and that’s what my presence is here to represent. I acknowledge and respect all gifts, and I wish you the very best in your journey. OS: Let’s talk about your style. SL: I love looks from the vintage style of Lena Horne, Jackie Onassis, and Barbra Streisand… the gowns, from funky to vintage. I try to put a lot of that together when I’m getting ready to step on stage. My stylist is Troy Clinton, and we just go through different looks and images, and we talk about it and he brings over these fabulous clothes and we kind of sort through them and choose what’s going to work for that moment.

OS: Do you have any words for your fans here in Orlando? Why do you want Orlando to be your home, when you could choose a city such as New York or Los Angeles? SL: I am so grateful and thankful for their love and support; there’s no way in the world I could do and be who I am without that encouragement. Those are the things that really keep you going, to know that people really are in your corner. I could have moved away, and I said to myself, “As long as I’m near an airport, I’ll be good.” And this is home, and I want to be one of the ones who stay here and help nurture the growth. We have a lot of new things going on here… I don’t want to leave when it starts growing and then come back; I want to be here and help be that footstool… I want to be a part of the building. I’m really grateful to them for embracing me while I’m here. Keep up with Sisaundra by liking her Facebook Page, Sisaundra LIVE, and following her on Twitter and Instagram at @Sisaundra. Digital Infrared. While there, he became Director of IT for a company with 15 employees that soon grew to over 50! While working full time at Digital Infrared, it occurred to Orndorf that he could also help small businesses and clients on a budget with simple computer and network issues. It was at this time Bayshore Interactive was born. Digital Infrared was eventually acquired by a hi-tech firm called ICx Technologies, then acquired again by a national defense contractor, FLIR Systems. During this transitional period Orndorf kept quietly rising in the ranks of the fast paced, secretive IT administrative world. All the while, Tommy’s simple grass roots IT assistance side business, Bayshore Interactive was starting to gain traction. Orndorf quickly recognized the need for managed IT services and the opportunity to capitalize on his technology know-how and shortly thereafter he left FLIR to pursue building Bayshore Interactive into his full time business. Growing and acclimating quickly to the industry, Bayshore Interactive now services over one hundred clients in fifteen states across the USA. With new technology entering the market daily, Orndorf doesn’t see the business slowing down anytime soon. In fact his projected growth strategy for Bayshore Interactive includes adding more technology, more services and more employees. Bayshore Interactive offers full IT management packages for small to medium sized businesses that just don’t want to make an investment in full time, high priced IT staff. In addition to being passionate about his business, Orndorf believes in giving back by donating a significant amount of time, money and gratis IT services to Central Florida charitable partners and non-profit events.

Building a technology driven empire can have the most unlikely and un-pretentious beginnings. It all started twenty years ago in Gainesville when Tommy Orndorf, founder of Bayshore Interactive, saw a sign in the window of a small internet provider in a strip mall that simply read “HIRING.” He interviewed not knowing what the Internet was or what he might be getting into. Luck was on his side however, when he was hired and his passion and proclivity for technology fueled him to advance to a Network Administrator position within a year. Tommy was offered a job two years later with an up and coming ISP called MPINet, and he quickly seized the opportunity. MPINet would eventually be sold and shortly after, Orndorf landed himself a position at a small hi-tech firm called

ORLANDO’S NO. 1 READERS’ CHOICE • STUDIO Special Promotional Feature
COLLAZO COLLECTION COLLAZO COLLECTION IS THE COLLABORATIVE WORKS OF ARTISTS ANGELA BROOKS AND GABRIEL COLLAZO.
Cosmolude 48”H x 72”W | Mixed Media on Wood
“AS ARTISTS WORKING TOGETHER IN THE STUDIO, COLLAZO AND BROOKS HAVE EVOLVED A SOPHISTICATED PROCESS” When artists say the “process” of creation is the most important part of the artistic work in the studio, Brooks and Collazo give new meaning to the concept. They work together in the studio; their work is intensely collaborative, like dialogues in paint. The end result in the works themselves reveals the synchronicity of their artistic vision - their palette, their emotional feeling for texture, for subtlety of expression and their ––evident freedom. VIBE : Here is how they describe what the process means to them. In our everyday lives there are so many things we have to do that we wanted to make our studio experience a place of letting go and being free to create. Painting is not a job; “it comes from our souls. It’s something we love doing together, spending as much time with each piece until our time with it is complete. A wise counselor guided our thought process in
creating art; “This is our time with God and the love of something you do, letting every part of the process be guided by love and free of any expectations and the universe will have no choice but to recognize what you are doing.” PROCESS: Our art is a natural progression of style, color, texture and balance. We approach each piece with an inspiration and direction we want to begin with. Preparing each piece and looking at a white primed surface anticipating art. Most pieces are laid down flat for days, sometimes weeks, allowing for texture, movement and inspiration to take form. There is a reaction that happens with mediums that should not be mixed together; chemicals blend together to form controlled chaos that creates our style of abstract art. We love leaving each night, taking one last look at each piece and coming back the next day to discover what has naturally occurred.
It takes layers and layers of techniques and treatments for a piece to reach completion. We are a team, we are soulmates, and we believe in love and we love what we do. In today’s chaotic, highly focused world, the home is the last sanctuary to rest and relax. Beauty renourishes the soul and helps remind us of the purpose and the meaning of all our busy activities. The beautiful surfaces of Angela Brooks and Gabriel Collazo wash quietly over your eyes to rest in your soul and provide atmospheric harmony. As artists working together in the studio, Collazo and Brooks have evolved a sophisticated process of making large format work. They work at a scale that a viewer can immerse oneself into and explore. Their signature style is one of ablution and serenity, girding one against the outside world. Artist and writer, Richard Reep

ARIZ BOUSAID LE SALON & SPA ZIZOU, AND FLORIDA PERFUME 500 INC. After a few visits to Orlando, she decided to put down roots in Central Florida. She fell in love with Winter Park and began working as a hairstylist while networking with some of Orlando’s most prominent people. In 2006, Ariz purchased the business she was working at and opened her first salon & spa with the vision to bring a touch of Paris fashion and style to Central Florida. In just one year, her venture earned the “Salon of the Year” distinction from the Orlando Business Journal. In 2012, Ariz, an avid collector of perfume bottles, commissioned a French Master perfumer to create a scent for the state of Florida that commemorated the 500 year anniversary of the state. The “Florida” perfume was created and received the Viva Florida 500 Seal of Approval from the Department of State. The original bottle is on permanent display in The Florida History Museum in Tallahassee. Recognizing the market for importing perfume from France, Ariz proceeded to work with many other world known master perfumers. Today, her second company, Florida Perfume 500 LLC is the exclusive distributor of niche perfumes from France, distributing to 5 star hotels, boutiques, and spas around the United States. You can find her products in luxury hotels such as the Ritz Carlton and the Waldorf Astoria. In 2015, Ariz signed a contract with Mormina Paris that allows Ariz to use the nick name ZIZOU on perfume bottles and custom jewelry. The line will be telling the everyday story of a young girl named ZIZOU. Zizou in Heels, ZiZOU in a BiKini, ZIZOU in the SuRF, and ZIZOU on a Date are just some of the perfume and scented jewelry products that will hit the market this coming January. Ariz is a single, devoted, and proud mother. She is a philanthropist at heart and believes that life’s primary purpose is to help others. She facilitates raising money through fashion shows and charity events, supporting many Central Florida organizations. She is the recipient of many awards and recognitions. She has been recognized by the Shares of Florida Hospital and has received the Paul Harris Award from Winter Park Rotary. Ariz was also crowned Rookie of the Year by the West Orlando Rotary Club. She is a member of FABCO and the West Orlando Rotary Club. Ariz loves running, the beach, and the gym. In 2014, she came in first place for her group in a 15K race. She enjoys fresh flowers and modern art. Ariz will be spending the holidays with her family in Baldwin Park, where she currently resides with her son Adam.
“We can only see well with the heart.” - Antoine de St. Exupery Antoine de St. Exupery’s motto has been the guiding light for Ariz Bousid, owner/partner of Le Salon & Spa Zizou, and Florida Perfume 500 Inc. In search of opportunity, Ariz moved to the United States from France at the age of 16. She studied business at New York University where she discovered a passion for the beauty industry. By the age of 23, Ariz owned and operated her first successful salon & spa in Manhattan.

ANTONIYA THE FACE BEHIND FAIRBANKS REALTY, ORLANDO FL
times and I learned from them. Life taught me early that Real Estate is a natural security against inflation and especially hyperinflation, but I also learned not to ‘play’ with homes’ yearly appreciation, but rely on other factors too. At Fairbanks Realty we find real estate deals and the deals sell themselves. We never look for buyers, we always look for deals! When we make our real estate investors money, they stick around. They call us, they want to work with us, they trust us. We work with the same pool of investors time after time. They are good to us, and we are good to them! They show us their commitment and willingness to act fast, and we show them the deal. Once they have gone through the process a few times, investors don’t even want to see the properties before buying them. We have developed a very specific formula and when a property fits the criteria, every investor wants it. What makes Fairbanks Realty Different?
What is a leading criterion in buying an investment home? Buy the cheapest thing in the best location and
buy a lot of it. Don’t ever buy an investment house that you don’t see yourself living in. Look at the ‘naked body’ of the home not the ‘outfit.’
What are the Housing Market Forecasts and predictions for 2016? The U.S. housing market had
a strong year and 2016 will be a natural continuation. We should expect the mortgage rates to continue to climb, which may lead to some slowdown in the real estate market; however, supply and demand imbalances could still drive the home prices up and expected job gains can contribute even further to that factor. my Florida Real Estate license in 2004 while still in college. I entered the Real Estate field early and I never looked back. In this business the ‘cash is the limit,’ it is hard work, but very rewarding. The stress levels are high,
but the opportunities are endless. My mentor and business partner, Randy Wilson, has been in the business for over 25 years. This is the second company that we built together, so we offer over 37 years of combined experience.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature
For several weeks leading up to October 15, 2015 accountants were busy preparing tax returns for people who had not filed their 2014 tax returns. While U.S. tax returns are due by April 15th for the previous year, many people need additional time to prepare their returns. In order to get the additional time a request for extension and payment of anticipated tax must be sent to the IRS.
Mark L. Horwitz
FAILING TO TIMELY FILE U.S. INCOME TAX RETURNS
By Mark L. Horwitz | Criminal Defense Attorney Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine St.Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 • F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com • www.mlhorwitzlaw.com
If the taxes are not paid when the request for extension is filed, a penalty of 1/2 percent per month is imposed. This is called a failure to pay penalty. This means that if taxes were not paid, a person who files and pays the tax by October 15th will be charged an additional 3% on the amount that was paid late. In addition, the person will be charged interest by the IRS. If the return is not filed within the extension period, there is also a failure to file penalty of 5% of the taxes due for the first 30 days after October 15th and 5% per month thereafter up to 25%. These penalties are obviously harsh and yet there are worse consequences. If the IRS believes the failure to file is due to fraud, then the failure to pay penalty and the failure to file penalty increases. The failure to file penalty goes from 25% to 75% of the tax due. The failure to timely file the tax return can have far more serious repercussions. It is a federal crime if one willfully fails to timely file yearly income tax returns. Each year is a separate crime. For example, if tax returns are not filed for four years and the IRS believes that the failure to file was willful, a person could be punished by a maximum of four years in federal prison.
The difference between simply paying money as a civil penalty or being subjected to possible prison, depends upon whether the IRS believes the person acted willfully. What constitutes willful behavior is initially determined by an IRS criminal investigator. The general meaning of willful in the tax laws is that a person knows of the legal requirement to file a tax return and intentionally fails to file the return. If a return is not filed because of mistake, negligence or even a misunderstanding of the law, it is not willful. However, a person may be unsuccessful in convincing the government the failure to file was not willful and then must convince a jury in a criminal trial. The IRS claims that the income tax system of the United States is voluntary. In spite of this claim, the U.S. Department of Justice will prosecute individuals who the IRS believes willfully fail to comply with this voluntary system. Over the years there have been many high profile prosecutions for willfully failing to file income tax returns. Wesley Snipes and Arthur Jones, the founder of Nautilus Sports Equipment, are just two examples. Mr. Snipes was convicted in Federal Court in Ocala and sentenced to three years in federal prison. Mr. Jones was tried in Federal Court in Orlando and the jury returned not guilty verdicts on all counts. In Mr. Jones’ case, the defense was able to prove that he did not act willfully.

THE HISTORY OF
CHURCH STREET
STATION
By Alexandra Mariano
Downtown Orlando is a hub for restaurants,
politics, and business. The New Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts epitomizes Orlando’s emerging aesthetic as a city of high-rises and glass paneling. Amidst these increasingly modern offices and luxury apartments, Orlando has kept one of its tangible treasures of history: Church Street Station.
Many downtown Orlando lovers have probably walked past the site without realizing the past century infused within. The station was built in 1889 for the South Florida Railroad, which ran from Sanford to Tampa. In 1893, Henry B. Plant bought and merged the South Florida Railroad with his Plant System railway. This gave Orlando access to the panhandle and even southern Georgia. From 1902 through 1926, the station belonged to the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, running from Richmond, Virginia, to Jacksonville. Time and time again, Church Street Station was plugged into a web of railways, connecting Orlando to faraway places. In 1926, though, the station’s passenger operations were passed on to Orlando Health’s Amtrak Station. After renouncing passengers, the station sat latent until July 1972, when Bob Snow came to town whispering change for a more vibrant city. Snow had successfully completed a similar project in downtown Pensacola, remodeling South Palafox Street into the flourishing Seville Quarter. Living out of a single railroad car on Church Street, Snow developed the area into the Church Street District. In its prime, the complex was Florida’s fourth-largest tourist attraction.
Snow’s Church Street Station was best known for Rosie O’Grady’s Good Time Emporium, where people shared beers for only a nickel while enjoying great music. Jazz would playfully escape through the windows. Eventually, Rosie O’Grady’s Flying Circus came about, with planes and hot air balloons directed by retired colonel Joe Kittinger. If you’ve ever driven past Crystal Lake Drive and South Street, you’ve seen his memorial Kittinger Park and its F-4 Phantom II aircraft. His beguiling flights at Church Street Station had earned him Orlando’s love. Other favorites of the old Church Street Station District include Apple Annie’s Courtyard, Phineas Phogg’s Balloon Works, the Cheyenne Saloon and Opera House, the Orchid Garden Ballroom, Lili Marlene’s Aviator’s Pub, and the Terror on Church Street. In 1985, more than 1.7 million visitors would come see the buzz around Snow’s revisioning of the old Orlando railroad. The golden years didn’t last, though. Snow left Orlando and sold the station in 1989. The Church Street District’s huge success inspired Walt Disney World’s Pleasure Island; however, the Downtown Disney
100 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
scene blossomed, and the station’s visitors began to decline. When Universal Studios’ CityWalk opened in 1999, it seemed all hope had been lost for Church Street Station; two years later, Rosie O’Grady’s and other attractions were sold off. Most recently, the SunRail has incorporated the station as one of three downtown Orlando stops. In 2013, St. Petersburg businessman Mark Ferguson signed a 20year lease with plans for a new sports bar Ferg’s Depot, which opened in May this past year. The new restaurant, in addition to plans for a Church Street Tavern, might be the beginning of Church Street Station renaissance. The SunRail’s stop in the backyard of these businesses can only help. Church Street Station can never be completely erased from the soul of downtown Orlando. To solidify this sentiment, the building was added to the United States’ National Register of Historic Places in 1975, shortly after Snow’s takeover; it was the first Orlando location on the list. This deemed Church Street Station officially worthy of preservation. The next time you pass this historic building, try to hear the 1890s steam engines or Rosie’s old Dixieland jazz band.

HELPING
HANDS A QUICK GUIDE TO CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS
By Mark NeJame
Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley
The holidays are upon us, so if you haven’t already started, get your wallets ready – it’s gift-giving season! Now more than ever, gifts of a dual purpose are being given: a donation to a non-profit organization (NPO) on behalf of another is a creative and meaningful way to give to someone you care about. Adopt a snow leopard, give a goat to a family in need – so many options, so many passions. But how does one know which organization to select? There are a few rules of thumb when it comes to investigating non-profits:
Mark NeJame
TAKE YOUR TIME IN PICKING THE ORGANIZATION. Selecting an NPO is something that should be done with care, over time. If you truly connect with the cause and the organization, then your first donation should be the beginning of a long-term relationship. You will look forward to receiving updates from the NPO on its status and accomplishments, and will hopefully continue to donate over the years and contribute to its growth. Donating simply for the cute stuffed animal or the desk calendar you receive is for the wrong reason. THE IRS IS YOUR FRIEND (WELL, FOR PURPOSES OF THIS ARTICLE). You can request 990s or tax-exempt applications from the IRS, as well as confirm a charity’s 501(c)(3) status. Obviously, if you can’t locate the organization on irs.gov or The Foundation Center’s 990 Finder (foundationcenter.org), don’t donate.
102 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
IN THE KNOW
FOCUS ON THE MORE ESTABLISHED NPO’S. Charity Navigator (also a non-profit organization) has been recognized as one of the more trusted resources available for NPO investigation, and provides several handy lists, such as “10 Most Followed,” “10 Most Celebrity-Related,” “10 Top Notch Charities” and “10 Charities in Deep Financial Trouble,” to name a few. Guidestar Premium is also a reputable resource for investigating non-profits. Resources such as these provide important information on NPO accountability and transparency, executive compensation and filing status – meaning, they’ve done the research for you. Check to make sure their information is up-to-date, and don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and call with questions. PAY ATTENTION WHEN BEING SOLICITED. Avoid making donations (like, really, just hang up the phone) over telecommunications phone calls. Scammers are much more successful over the phone. Listen and read closely: NPO’s will oftentimes select similar names for their organizations and may appear associated with other, completely unrelated non-profits. So stay alert: if you’ve been solicited, don’t do the “knee-jerk” donation. Carefully investigate and follow these steps.
to those annual galas you attend. For more information on allowances and reporting information, speak with a CPA or tax attorney. So there you have it. While it may seem like an arduous process on the frontend, the goal is to establish a long-term relationship with a non-profit which suits your personal passions and desire to make a difference in the community – any community – worldwide. So choose wisely, and you never know what could blossom. A visit to a village you helped build? Now that’s a fulfilling relationship that gives a memorable gift to everyone...
“Selecting an NPO is something that should be done with care, over time.”
DON’T FORGET TO REPORT IT! As we’re all aware, charitable contributions are tax-deductible, so keep track of what you give and make sure to itemize your deductions. Keep all receipts of monies expended on NPO’s, including the tickets

IMPERATIVES TO PREPARE FOR A PET SITTER
HOW TO EFFECTIVELY PREPARE YOUR PET AND YOUR HOME WHEN USING A PROFESSIONAL PET CAREGIVER
By Fetch! Pet Care Kathleen Huffman Your vacation is scheduled and you prefer to have your pet stay at home while you are away. In choosing the perfect sitter you should of course interview them, check references and make sure the sitter is licensed, bonded and insured, and LOVES pets. But there are some additional steps you should also take to help ensure your pet will receive the best care possible: SCHEDULE: Most pet sitters book appointments far in advance. Make reservations as early as possible to guarantee a spot for your pet’s care. If your schedule changes, alert your pet sitter so additional care can be scheduled if necessary. PRE-VISIT INTRODUCTION: Make sure your pet has had an opportunity to meet the sitter before your vacation. Give your sitter your pet schedule, feeding and medication instructions. If possible, have the sitter take your dog for a walk so that your pet and sitter get accustomed to each other, or bond for a few minutes with your cat or other pets. PET CARE INFORMATION AND SUPPLIES: Don’t make your sitter search for pet care items. Place everything your sitter will need in one specific place. This includes food & treats (including a can opener, utensil to mix/chop food and scoop for measuring dry fare), extra food and consumable supplies just in case, medications (with clearly written instructions), leash and collar/harness, paper towels and cleaning supplies, broom/dust pan or vacuum cleaner, plastic bags for waste disposal, litter and scooper, and potty pads if used. Clearly write out and review with your pet sitter any special instructions you want them to perform.

PETS CAN BE MORE INQUISITIVE AND BORED WHEN THEY ARE LEFT ALONE AND GET INTO MISCHIEF.

THERMOSTAT: Your pet will be in your locked, sealed home. Make sure the thermostat is set at a comfortable temperature for your pet. Leave instructions on how to adjust the temperature range for your thermostat in case of a power-outage. PET PROOF YOUR HOME: Pets can be more inquisitive and bored when they are left alone and get into mischief. Put toilet lids down, close cupboards and closets, store medications, perfumes, loose small objects and household cleansers away and out of your pet’s reach. ALARMS, OFF-LIMIT AREAS, HOME ACCESS: Are there areas where your pet is not allowed? Make sure you close off the rooms and let the sitter know that those areas are to be kept off limits. Close and lock doors, including garage, and patio doors and windows before you leave. Use timers to control indoor lights so your pet’s day/night schedule is similar to when you are at home. Check to make sure gates and fences are closed and locked. VISITOR LIST: If you live in an apartment or gated community, advise and authorize security that your pet sitter will be visiting, and if appropriate, let you neighbors know too. Also, if you plan to have friends, family or someone else also checking on your house and pets in your absence, let the sitter know. Clearly explain what the pet sitter is responsible for and what the other visitors will be doing to avoid confusion. Also, let the sitter know about gardeners, pool or house maintenance providers who might also be on the premises in your absence. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY: Your pet sitter should have the information about where to take your pet in case of a health emergency. You should also notify your veterinarian in writing that a sitter will be watching your pet and authorize the veterinarian to provide medical care during your absence if necessary. If there is a natural disaster and your sitter needs to remove your pet from your premises, have a pet emergency kit available and a pet carrier too.You should also communicate with your sitter how you would like to get updates about your pet, via text, email or phone.

For reservations please call (407) 393-4333.
Preparation is the key to make sure your pet sitter has all of the information they need to properly care for your pet while you are away. If they don’t have to search around for your pet supplies and instructions, they will have more time to spend giving love and attention to your pet. 4012 Central Florida Pkwy. orlando, Fl 32837 | www.normans.com
