Our life has changed for sure, and it seems that the twins have teamed up to make sure we understand that well. We have been feverishly reading every book we can find about how to bring up babies in the best way, without completely wearing ourselves out! Luckily, we have some help, and things are already getting much better, although we are looking forward to the day when they can sleep through the night. But all in all, it is a great experience. To have a boy and a girl—is such a gift for us.
We wish you all a very Happy Halloween! Have fun, and be sure to stay safe during this hurricane season. Sincerely,
Even with the arrival of our beautiful and demanding twins, we just keep on going here at Orlando Style Magazine! We are getting ready for all of the great events coming up towards the end of the year! September’s Runway to Hope at The Mall at Millenia was a huge success for everyone involved, thanks to our good friends Josie and Mark NeJame. Sven J. Bode

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT Style Events, News & Gossip From Around the City By Riesa Pascal From September 11th-12th, thousands flocked to Magic Kingdom for Disney’s beloved annual music event, Night of Joy. Featuring a host of Dove Award and Grammy Award winning artists, the contemporary music festival boasted performances by some of the nation’s biggest Christian superstars in rock, pop, and gospel. From the soulful, inspiring Mandisa to hard-hitting rockers For King & Country, it truly was a ‘night of joy’ as attendees soaked up the spirited sounds of the star-studded lineup. Throughout the evening, park guests took breaks from the live music to enjoy some of the many rides that remained open during the event such as Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Space Mountain, Splash Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean and more.
Fall is finally here, Orlando! Do you remember the 21st
night of September? Well, maybe your memory isn’t as great as Earth, Wind and Fire’s, but hopefully you’re able to recall of few highlights from this past month. As Orlando welcomed the fall season with wide open arms, September was jam packed with thrills and events throughout the city. From concerts and festivals to fashion and zombies, we’ve got all the highlights for you, just in case you missed it! Last month there was a collective loosening of belt notches across the city thanks to Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month. All September long, Orlando’s amazing culinary scene was celebrated with select restaurants offering three-course, prix fixe dinners at the exceptional value of just $33 per person. The three-course dinner included the choice of a tasty appetizer, a mouth-watering entree and decadent dessert from the Magical Dining Month menu. With more than 70 of the Orlando area’s favorite restaurants participating, those who took advantage of the incredible deal were sure to indulge. Bice Ristorante, Emeril’s Orlando & Emeril’s Tchoup Chop, Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar, Fogo de Chao Brazilian Steakhouse, and The Capital Grille are just a few of the big names that guests enjoyed wining and dining all month long. From Winter Park and the Convention area to Downtown Disney and Universal CityWalk, participating restaurants from all around Orlando truly put the ‘magic’ in Magical Dining month. One dollar from each meal bought went to benefit the civic non-profit, ELEVATE Orlando.
Disney wasn’t the only theme park in town to get hands up in praise this month! Also from September 11th-12th, Universal Studios presented Florida’s biggest Christian music festival, Rock The Universe. Attendees rocked out over two nights of soul-stirring songs from some of Christian rock’s best including Crowder, Switchfoot, Jesus Culture, Planetshakers and more. The packed event included guest speakers, a candlelighting ceremony and more. In between the concerts, guests found plenty of time to enjoy the thrills of Universal Studios’ action-packed rides including Transformers: The Ride-3D, Men In Black Alien Attack, Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, Revenge of the Mummy and more!

CITY NEWS From September 17th-24th, Orlando’s most stylish week returned to The Mall at Millenia celebrating the wonderful world of clothing, accessories, fashion, and trends. The 10th Annual Fashion Week was a highly anticipated event that lived up to every expectation. All week long, Orlando’s finest enjoyed fashion shows, in-store trunk shows, guest appearances, and much more. Guests at BCBGMaxazria treated themselves to refreshments and a special preview of the upcoming fall collections. Pandora jewelry lovers sweetened their day with a dessert reception and in-store styling event while White House/Black Market shoppers set up personal styling sessions and received a free gift with any purchase. These were just a few of the thrilling in-store activities to headline the Fashion Week event. New this year, The Mall at Millenia brought a fashionable flair to their beloved event with the talents of Laura Brown. The executive editor of Harper’s BAZAAR magazine served as host for several fashion presentations including one of Fashion Weeks biggest highlights, the Fall Collection Spotlight Brunch presented by Runway To Hope. Attendees enjoyed an exclusive fashion show, a delightful Champagne brunch, and distinctive prize drawings at the annual event, which benefitted Runway to Hope’s family assistance program aiding Central Florida children and their families impacted by pediatric cancer. What do nine terrifying houses, five scare zones, two outrageous shows and thousands of horror fans equal? Why 30 nights of pure mayhem of course! Halloween is right around the corner and that can only mean one thing. Orlando’s spookiest event has returned to Universal Orlando Resort and it’s taking the city down one scream at a time. On September 18th, the legendary Jack the Clown made his triumphant (and twisted) return to present the biggest and scariest Halloween Horror Nights ever. No one puts on a more nightmarish event then Halloween Horror Nights, which places guests right into some of the most pulsepounding moments in horror movie history as the streets of Universal Studios come to life with legions of horrifying mutants, monsters and maniacs. It’s not too late for you to scare yourself senseless! The 25th annual Halloween Horror Nights continues for select nights through November 1st. Gather your friends (and courage) and head over to Universal Orlando Resort for the nation’s premier Halloween event.
September 25th marked the kickoff of Disney’s largest festival, the 2015 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival! Twenty years in the making, the festival is believed to be the largest food and wine event of its kind in the world. For seven weeks, guests will discover new dimensions of flavor as they embark on a globe trotting tour of tasty treats and incredible dishes from all over the world. Nightly concerts and live entertainment will have you eating to the beat and refusing to go home as you become fully immersed in the experience. Through grand tasting events and culinary demonstrations guests discovered impeccable menus, innovative dishes, and elevated their kitchen talents to a whole new level. With so many special events, culinary and beverage demonstrations, celebrity chef appearances, and tasting booths at the famous World Showcase Marketplace tasting, it’s no wonder the festival has become such a staple tradition for foodies and connoisseurs from around the globe. It’s not too late to take advantage of this not-to-be-missed-opportunity that’s right in your own backyard. The 2015 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival continues until November 16th. As we look ahead to the coming winter months, it’s only appropriate to have a moment of reminiscence for the summer season and one of the city’s best summer celebrations: SunsetFest at Bahama Breeze. A sunset is that magical moment on summer evenings when the sun dips below the horizon and the sky is aglow. Inspired by those entrancing emotions that a sunset stirs, Bahama Breeze created SunsetFest. The summer celebration is a nonstop party featuring live local music, glowing drinks, giveaways and plenty of delicious, Caribbean-inspired dishes. During my own experience at SunsetFest, my companion and I enjoyed a tasting of Bahama Breeze’s new rum flights and an assortment of delicious appetizers such as chicken and beef empanadas, jerk shrimp and seared tuna. The highlight of the evening proved be the Green Flash Cocktail, the special SunsetFest drink that honors the fleeting green flash when the sun slips just under the horizon. SunsetFest may be over, but Bahama Breeze keeps the Caribbean vibes going all year long so be sure to swing by and check out the city’s favorite destination for Caribbean cuisine! Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

ORLANDO NOW
The Happiest Place on Earth The 1st of October in 1971, a Friday, changed Orlando forever; the Walt Disney World Resort opened its magical gates for the first time to the children within us all. The Happiest Place on Earth did not only include the first park—Magic Kingdom—but also the Contemporary Resort, Polynesian Resort, and Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground. After Californian Disneyland’s chaotic grand opening, the Orlando resort overseers purposely planned the big reveal during the off-season so that they could smooth out kinks as they arose without being bogged down by an overcrowded theme park. The final count for visitors on the first day—a little over 10,000—almost doubled the amount of 5,500 Cast Members. While the Florida Highway Patrol was expecting a much higher turnout, the resort planners were pleased with the manageable crowd, and all opening festivities ran smoothly. Magic Kingdom spread across 107 acres, factioned with the familiar Main Street
USA, Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, and Tomorrowland from Disneyland. The new park did not include New Orleans Square, but instead added Liberty Square with its Hall of Presidents. The lands included classic attractions such as the railroad through Main Street, the Enchanted Tiki Room, Haunted Mansion, and It’s a Small World. The Country Bear Jamboree was an attraction specific to Magic Kingdom, along with the Cinderella castle. Unbeknownst to most native Floridians, the glass-slippered beauty’s home stands at 189 feet tall—a little over 100 feet taller than the Sleeping Beauty Castle in California. Disney was definitely aiming to outdo their previous efforts with their new swampy haven. Some might be surprised to learn that general admission tickets to Magic Kingdom were only $3.50 for adults, whereas contemporary 22 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
By Alexandra Mariano prices begin at $105 for a one-day, single park ticket. General admission, however, did not grant access to any of the attractions. The rides were managed carnival-style, requiring either an A, B, C, D, or E ticket to hop on (E tickets being the more fun of the spectrum). Even with having to pay extra to take a spin in the Mad Tea Party, general admission plus an eleven adventure ticket book was only $5.75. Better yet, parking was only 50 cents! Seventies era Disney goers could enjoy all the mouse had to offer for half the price of current movie tickets. Go On & Wine About it TIPS TO BECOME A WINE CONNOISSEUR
By Diane Zeise
Aldo Sohm, wine director of Le Bernardin and the 2008 winner of the “Best Sommelier in the World” award offers some spot on and incredibly effortless advice on what to look for in choosing a wine. His first piece of wisdom is to ignore the price tag and the “fashionable”
There’s no right answer when it comes to wine. And while what you’re drinking certainly depends on what you’re eating, there’s so much more involved when pairing the right wine with the drinker.

wines. Just because it’s expensive or “in season” doesn’t mean it’s worth the value or worth a taste. If you find yourself focusing too much on what’s on the outside of the bottle, Sohm recommends blind tasting a variety of wines to find one or two that agree with your pallet. When it comes to the origin of the wine, no specific region is perfect as a go-to wine in Sohm’s opinion. He uses Chilean strawberry versus French strawberry as an example. Both wines have merit, but only one will fit the profile that you’re after at any given time. Chilean strawberry wine is generally less expensive, with a bold and powerful bite. French strawberry wine, on the other hand, is fragrant, fresh and elegant. Take your time when ordering or purchasing a wine, especially at a restaurant. You may think you want a sweet and fruity wine to enjoy with dessert but what you’re probably looking for is an aromatic wine to awaken your senses. The time of day can also help in determining what type of wine you’re looking
to taste. A good rule of thumb is white while the sun’s still up. A delicate white is paired well with brunches, lunches and everything in between, while a rich red usually tastes right with dinner dishes, with the exception of fish. Pink and rosé wines are often the perfect companions to anything sweet, so be sure to enjoy a glass after dinner. Connoisseurs don’t neglect the glass they’re drinking from either. A true wine glass is gracefully stemmed and thin-lipped with an elegantly balanced svetle profile. This type of glass is perfectly designed to optimize your drinking experience, with plenty of room for swirling. Remember, air is a fine wine’s best friend. Let your wine breathe and you’ll find yourself privy to the aromatic dance in each sip. While many glasses exist for every grape varietal, Maximilian Riedal, CEO of Riedal Crystal America, recommends you begin building your glass collection around your wine collection. Don’t buy a glass designed for a riesling if you don’t drink riesling. To make enjoying wine easier, Delta Air Lines Master Sommelier, Andrea
Robinson designed two types of wine glasses. The glass with a stem perfectly developed for a red wine and a glass with a stem created for a white. If you’re in the market for some color specific glasses, her glasses, aptly titled “The ONE” aren’t difficult to find. Simply visit www.AndreaWine.com/the-one to read more about her famous stems. And If you’re in to breaking rules, Vajra Stratigos, wine and beverage director for Atlanta-based Fifth Group Restaurants strongly recommends drinking your bubbly out of a wide-mouthed wine glass. His reasoning? “The bubbles are just so much more ferocious with a wider lip” he gushes. The next time you’re focused on understanding every wine on the menu, remember to decide first what you’re in the mood for, ignore the price tag and remember, the best wine isn’t what’s in style or most expensive. The best wine is wine worth sharing.

You’re going to need your liner for this one. Playing with bold lines around your eyes has been the most surprisingly fun trend we’ve seen recently. Experiment by making an extra bold cat eye, adding bold lines where you normally wouldn’t, and if you’re up to the challenge, add smudged lines all over the place for a bold and unexpected look.
Moody, bold, and oh so dramatic... 90’s goth lips are coming back in a big way. Choose dark reds, burgundies, and even black to get the perfect 90’s pout. But don’t forget the liner!
Metallic eyeshadow may not be new, but we’ve seen a rise in bronze and dusted gold lids this year. These tones warm up the face and add a glam look instantly. Even better? It can be paired with some moody goth lips for a punk metal vibe or a toned-down fresh faced cheek for a sunkissed feel.
Beautifully flushed cheeks from the winter cold? Count us in. Make it look like you have the perfect frost-bitten cheeks by adding a bit more blush and blending until you have a nice, rosy flush. 30 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

2015 JUNE EXPERTS ANNOUNCE TWO NEW TREATMENT DRUGS, PERJETA AND PALBOCICLIB.
Combined, these drugs show promise in prolonging the development of breast cancer. The drugs, initially released in the UK, work together to block the protein that causes the growth of hormone receptor-positive breast tumors in the most common form of breast cancer (advanced oestrogen receptor positive breast cancer). Palbociclib has been FDA approved since February.
AUGUST PROFESSORS JEFFREY S. TOBIAS AND JAYANT VAIDYA DISCUSS THE INTRABEAM, A DEVICE THEY DEVELOPED TO ADMINISTER A NEW SINGLE, ONE TIME DOSE OF RADIATION DURING LUMPECTOMY SURGERY.
This single treatment allows patients with small nonaggressive tumors an alternative to daily radiation sessions lasting between five and seven weeks. The technique, which is delivered directly into the breast, was tested on over 3,000 women. Only 3% of those women had a recurrence within 5 years. RESEARCH REVEALS THAT A SIMPLE BLOOD TEST CAN DETECT AND DETERMINE RELAPSE PROBABILITIES IN PATIENTS.
Although this blood test which detects cancer DNA in the blood before the cells grow into tumors, shows promise, the studies thus far have been too small to reveal definite results. the “liquid biopsy” developed at the Institute of Cancer Research in London, is scheduled for a larger case study next year before being released to the public. IMAGING TECHNOLOGY MAKES A THROUGH WITH 3-D MAMMOGRAMS.
BREAK-
The Breast Center at JFK Medical Center welcomes new 3-D mammography technology. According to Grace Malantic-Lu, M.D., who is a board certified radiologist, “3-D mammography captures multiple slices of the breast, all at different angles. The images are brought together to create a crystal-clear 3-D reconstruction of the breast. We are then able to review the reconstruction, one thin slice at a time, almost like turning pages in a book. That makes it easier for doctors to see if there’s anything to be concerned about. And, there’s less chance for a cancer to hide behind overlapping tissue.” 35 STYLETOME.COM

FALL FASHION Florida-style By Autumn Barker
Living in the Sunshine State has many perks - endless beach days, daily infusions of Vitamin D, living within driving distance of Disney World. While living in a subtropical climate provides us the opportunity to staycation, it denies us the opportunity to fully embrace fall fashion trends. Just because we live in a warmer climate doesn’t mean we should miss out on the fun of a new wardrobe and experimenting with the latest trends. Orlando Style has compiled a list of creative ways to embrace the best of fall fashion without breaking a sweat.
GET CREATIVE WITH LEATHER Leather jackets are the ultimate fall accessory. Unfortunately, when it’s 80 degrees outside wearing a leather jacket, even in pursuit of chic-ness, is not high on our list. Fortunately for us fashion connoisseurs, leather is chic no matter what form it’s in. This fall, instead of reaching for your favorite leather jacket, incorporate the fashionable fabric into your wardrobe in an innovative way. Pair a pair of leather shorts with a chunky sweater or a slick pair of leather leggings with a gauzy shirt. Theory’s Berdin Polished Leather Skirt* is an ace substitute for a leather jacket, adding an edgy finish to any look. Pair this skirt with a sheer blouse or light-knit sweater and a pair of loafers and you’ve got a look that is the perfect compliment to your Pumpkin Spice Latte. *available at Bloomingdale’s

FALL FOR A RICHER PALETTE
SAY YES TO THE DRESS
NOT BOOTS, BUT BOOTIES
Where summer style is all about bright, vibrant colors, fall trends tend to embrace the deeper hues. The easiest way to embrace fall fashion without breaking a sweat is to fill your wardrobe with summer cuts and styles in richer colors. Summer pieces tend to be made from lighter fabrics, which is ideal for the Florida temperatures. Alice + Olivia’s Mollie Brocade Dress* is a perfect example of a summer cut that easily transitions to fall. The burnt orange brocade is on trend for the Fall 2015 season, while the cut is ideal for a warmer climate. Pair with a pair of peeptoe booties and you’re ready to beat the heat while still looking fall chic. *available at Neiman Marcus
The easiest, breeziest way to maintain your cool in the fall is by turning dresses into your wardrobe workhorses. Look for dresses in fun patterns and rich jewel tones to make a smooth transition into fall. And, should the weather start to cool off, a pair of tights can easily be added to any dress to make the look weather appropriate. Joie Aggi’s Tossed Paisley Print Silk Chiffon Dress* would make a great addition to any fall wardrobe: the 70’s inspired design mirrors many styles seen on the Fall/Winter 2015 runways and the rich jewel tones are in tune with the season. *available at Bloomingdale’s
In fall there’s an instinctual desire to pull our boots from the back of the wardrobe. But while temperatures remain firmly within the 80s, it’s a bit impractical to start putting on our riding boots. Instead of trying to endure the heat in your favorite pair of boots, substitute a fun pair of booties. You’ll still achieve the same level of style, without risking a heat stroke. Vince’s Fionn Open Toe Leather Bootie* is a great option for any fall outfit and the open-toe will show off that great pedicure you’re still maintaining. Take advantage of styles, like open-toe booties and lightweight dresses, that fashionistas in northern climates can no longer wear, and develop a fall style that’s all your own. After all, fashion is truly about expressing yourself to the world. *available at Neiman Marcus
YOU’RE READY TO BEAT THE HEAT WHILE STILL LOOKING FALL CHIC.

The most important thing to remember is postpartum depression is not a character flaw or weakness. It is important for a woman suffering from postpartum depression to have a strong support system surrounding her to provide emotional support. Studies have shown that women with supportive partners are more likely to have a speedier recovery from PPD. There are several treatment options for postpartum depression, including counseling or talk therapy and medication, both treatment methods can often be used together. A woman’s healthcare provider should always be consulted before beginning any type of medication, especially if a mother is breastfeeding.

Recent studies have shown that approximately ten percent of new dads experience postnatal paternal depression or PPND. Symptoms can include increased conflict or anger with others, ongoing physical symptoms like headaches, digestion problems or pain, problems with concentration or motivation at work, and feeling conflicted about how he should be as a man versus how he actually is. Like postpartum depression, experts are unsure what triggers postnatal paternal depression, but studies have shown that men whose partners are experiencing or have experienced postpartum depression are more likely to experience PPND. Men who are experiencing symptoms of postnatal paternal depression should immediately seek help from a healthcare provider and/ or support group.
R ’S P OS E
One in every seven women experiences a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder like postpartum depression. Postpartum depression can affect any woman regardless of her age or number of children she has borne. Like other emotional disorders, postpartum depression is not a weakness- it is an illness that can be recovered from with help from a healthcare professional and a strong support system.

2. POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION IS THE MOST COMMON COMPLICATION OF CHILDBIRTH.
Prenatal yoga can be an ideal way to stay in shape during your pregnancy. Keeping you limber, toned and centered, yoga improves your balance and circulation, with little, if any, impact on your joints. Yoga is also beneficial as it teaches you to breathe deeply and fully, a discipline that is sure to be of use in the delivery room and in the months to come.

Many new mothers experience “baby blues” after giving birth. Baby blues typically begin within the first couple days after delivery lasting up to two weeks post-delivery. Baby blues are usually characterized by mood swings, anxiety, difficulty sleeping and crying spells. While up to 80 percent of new mothers experience baby blues, ten to 20 percent experience postpartum depression. PPD may initially be mistaken for baby blues, but the symptoms are generally more intense and last longer. Symptoms can develop within the first few weeks after birth, but can also develop up to six months post-delivery. Symptoms include difficulty bonding with your baby, withdrawing from your friends and family, severe anxiety or panic attacks, and intense irritability and anger. Many mothers suffering from postpartum depression can also experience feelings of worthlessness, shame, guilt or inadequacy, and fears of being a bad mother. PPD often affects a woman’s ability to function and can worsen without medical attention.
PRENATAL
Postpartum depression can affect any woman regardless of race, age, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status, but some women run a higher risk of developing postpartum depression. Women who’ve had previous experiences with depression or bipolar disorder or experienced symptoms of depression during their pregnancy are at a higher risk of experiencing postpartum depression. Medical complications during childbirth or a stressful life event during the pregnancy or shortly after giving birth can also trigger postpartum depression.

is an emotional experience for all parties involved. While having a baby can be one of the happiest moments of a woman’s life, childbirth is an emotional and traumatic experience for the body and it is not uncommon for some sort of complication to occur. It is not uncommon for women to experience a mild form of depression known as “baby blues” in the first couple weeks after giving birth. However, in the midst of the joy surrounding the birth of a new baby, some women experience a more severe form of depression known as postpartum depression (PPD). Style Magazines has compiled a list of five truths everyone should know about postpartum depression and how to better understand those suffering from PPD.

TIPS FOR NEW DADS Your voice will comfort your baby, and you’ll be just as engaged.
With a new baby coming, all eyes are probably on the mother—but wait, who’s that in the background? Tall, itchy beard, kind of familiar, wasn’t he at Thanksgiving? Oh, right, that’s Dad! Fathers take on a lot more responsibility in parenting than the public eye lets on. They’re responsible for half of the love that goes into raising a child. Here are a few tips to point new dads in the right direction.
6. Bring them with you! Small and still unable to walk, newborns are entertaining company on a grocery mission or a trip to the bank. 7.Volunteer to change diapers. Not only do dirty diapers make for intimate one-on-one time (nothing says ‘close’ like poo), but volunteering will also lead to a stronger relationship with your partner.
1. Schedule regular father-baby days out. At times mom might overpower you, so show your baby you’ve got perks, too.
8. Snap photographs with an actual camera, not with your smartphone. Your future kids (and you!) will treasure a physical album a lot more than a Facebook album.
2. Make staring contests a part of playtime. Babies are fascinated by our eyes, and prolonged eye contact builds trust. 3. Skin on skin contact is a must. Newborns crave what’s warm and familiar—plus it’s another reason to show off your hot dad bod.
9. Invest in a cordless, rechargeable compact vacuum. As meals transition from liquids to solids, so will the debris on your carpets.
4. Let them touch your hair. Yes, there might be some pulling at first, but they’re just getting to know one of the most important people in their life.
10. Embrace deep breathing exercises. You’ll need them when the crying and lack of sleep catches up to you.
5. If board books aren’t your thing, read something you like—sports scores, New York Times book reviews, Mad Libs puzzles, you name it!

GROW
BABY,
GROW! By Courtney Caggiano
We know you want your baby to grow
up healthy and strong, but sometimes it’s hard to discern what’s best when it comes to nutrition. With such tiny tummies, babies don’t eat much, so mealtime should be packed with the nutrients they need. We’ve compiled a list of the five most powerful superfoods to keep your baby healthy the natural way.
BANANAS
Bananas are one of the most popular superfoods for babies. Packed with carbohydrates, these super fruits are the perfect way to provide your baby with sustained energy while supporting a healthy digestive system with plenty of fiber. We all know that these yellow lovelies are full of potassium, but we may not all be aware of how important potassium is for a growing baby. Bananas are an easy fix for your baby when you are on the go—no packaging or storage required! Always be sure to only serve ripe bananas that are mashed thoroughly so they are easy for your cutie to chew.
SWEET POTATOES
This delicious root vegetable is an excellent source of potassium, vitamin C, and beta-carotene, an antioxidant that will protect your little one from those nasty free radicals. These are also a great way to please a picky palate due to their super sweet taste compared to other fibrous vegetables. If your baby turns up a nose at icky green veggies, this might be the perfect substitute until his or her

FOOD FOR THOUGHT tastes have matured. Mashed sweet potatoes are an easy fix for babies who are beginning the transition from baby food to solid foods.
AVOCADOS
Mommy’s favorite taco topping is more than just a grown up treat—avocados are the perfect answer to the good fats that keep your baby on the road to a healthy heart. With the highest protein content of any fruit, avocados provide your baby with the energy to stay full and focused for a long day of crawling and crying. However, these green goddesses are super high in fat, so be sure to only serve a little to your baby. The best way to implement avocados into your baby’s diet is to combine them with less fatty foods, such as pureed chicken or other tenderized meats.
These tiny treasures are sources of vitamins A and C, which are antioxidants that boost your baby’s immune system.
Chew it Over
Your bun may still be in the oven, but what you feed them while they’re cooking is just as important as what they put in their mouth later! Check out our top superfoods, recommended by doctors, to consume during pregnancy for a healthy kick-start to your baby’s future.
Scrambled or boiled, one egg is packed with low-saturated fats, protein, and vitamin D.
Popcorn counts as a whole grain—snack while getting your carbohydrates, vitamin E, and zinc.
BUTTERNUT SQUASH
Now that fall is here, you are probably looking for more ways to incorporate seasonal butternut squash into your dinnertime routine, but did you know that this fall treat is perfect for your baby? Just like sweet potatoes, this yummy fall favorite is full of beta-carotene and vitamin C, as well as fiber, folate, and B-vitamins. Butternut squash also has omega-3 fatty acids similar to what is found in fish oil. To prepare this squash for your little one’s tiny tummy, steam or boil chunks of the squash until tender, then puree in a food processor or blender until smooth. This mashed squash isn’t just for babies; try it as a side dish for mommy and daddy too!
Get in touch with your southern side by steaming some collard greens, rich in iron, vitamin K, and folate.
PEAS
One of nature’s most vitamin-packed veggies is often overlooked, but peas are one of the best ways to support your baby’s growing body. Peas are loaded with vitamin K, which works with calcium to help build strong bones. These tiny treasures are sources of vitamins A and C, which are antioxidants that boost your baby’s immune system. For a fun twist, British-style mushy peas are a delicious dish for the whole family, or you can just take the easy way out and purchase mashed peas in the baby food isle. Peas are always easy to find in your grocery store, because they are one of the most popular baby food choices—and now you know why! As always, check with your pediatrician before introducing any new foods to your little bundle of joy! 57 STYLETOME.COM
Walnuts have fiber and healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Mix them with any salad or…
...Greek yogurt! With calcium and twice the protein of regular yogurt, it’s essential for you and your baby. Add berries for extra vitamins.

Actors
Who Turned Down
Iconic Roles THESE CELEBS WILL THINK TWICE BEFORE THEY SAY “NO” TO THE NEXT SCRIPT!
By Riesa Pascal
Buckle up ladies and gentlemen! We’re about to enter an alternate universe and this ride might get a little strange. How strange? As strange as picturing Al Pacino as Han Solo in Star Wars or Michael Keaton playing the lead of Phil Connors in Groundhog Day. Still not weird enough? Try imagining Johnny Depp as Ferris in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. As bizarre as those examples sound, they all nearly happened. Nothing is more crucial to a movie’s success than casting the perfect actors to portray the lead roles. Although every role starts off on paper, it must eventually find feet and a voice that brings the character to life. The following iconic films found that voice in actors who will forever go down in history for the character they portrayed. Next time you start kicking yourself over a costly work mistake, take a moment to think about the following celebs who turned down the opportunity to take on those iconic, famous roles. It’s time to take a look at what could have been! The Role: Neo in The Matrix
The Matrix tells the story of Neo, a computer hacker who learns from mysterious rebels about the true nature of his reality and his role in the war against its controllers. More than 15 years after its release, it’s still impossible to imagine anyone other than Keanu Reeves as Neo, but that wasn’t always the case for the film’s directors. Did you know that the Fresh Prince himself was initially offered the lead role? Will Smith was riding high after the smash hits Independence Day and Men in Black when he was given the opportunity to portray the character of Neo. Smith turned down the role to make Wild Wild West instead and called The Matrix concept “too complicated,” reportedly saying he didn’t see the film performing well at the box office. Sorry Smith, but we all know how the four-time Academy Award winning movie fared in the end, and you were quite wrong. As for Wild Wild West? Well the film might’ve been a flop, but hey, at least the theme song hit number-one on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s not an Oscar, but it’s something!
The Role: Danny Zuko in Grease
Grease will forever go down in history as one of the greatest musicals of all time. The film earned over $694 million at the box office and is listed on The American Film Institute 100 Years…100 Passions
CELEBRITY SOUP
which lists the 100 greatest love stories in American cinema. To imagine the film’s lead, Danny Zuko, portrayed by anyone other than John Travolta feels blasphemous, even if that other actor were someone whom the entire nation already loved and embraced as a greaser. Henry Winkler’s most famous role will always be “The Fonz” or “Fonzie” on Happy Days, but he was also offered the chance to play Danny Zuko. In a 2007 interview, Winkler spoke of the missed opportunity saying, “I was asked to be in Grease. But I decided I didn’t want to be typecast. What I didn’t realize was that I already was,” Winkler explained. “That’s why John Travolta went on to buy his own plane and I just went home.”
The Role: Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman
Molly Ringwald was one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood after starring in the 80s classics Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, and The Breakfast Club. However, the actress struggled to find good acting roles during the early 90s and has been cursed with obscurity ever since. One can only imagine how differently her fate would’ve turned out if she hadn’t turned down two of the most memorable roles in movie history. Pretty Woman is rightfully one of the most successful films of all time and has grossed more than $460 million to date. The massive commercial success secured Julia Roberts an Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe award for her career-making portrayal of Vivian Ward, the hooker with a heart of gold. Roberts went on to become ‘America’s Sweetheart’ and one of the biggest movie stars in the world, but that might’ve been Ringwald’s story if she hadn’t turned down the offer to play Vivian in 1990. That same year, Ringwald missed a shot at redeeming her career when she also turned down the lead role of Molly in Ghost. The part eventually went to Demi Moore and became one of the most memorable roles of her career. Soon after, the French-speaking Ringwald relocated to Paris to star in a string of French films instead… and possibly to hide from her embarrassing career blunder as well.
The Role: Gandalf in The Lord of The Rings Trilogy
Let this next tale be a warning to everyone who immediately disagrees with something they don’t understand. Sean Connery, the original James Bond, was still acting in the late 90s when Peter Jackson offered him the part of Gandalf in his adaptation of The Lord Of The Rings. Citing that he didn’t “get fantasy” or “understand the script,” Connery passed on the role that was eventually given to the brilliant Ian McKellen. McKellen went on to earn an award for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, and Gandalf was crowned the 28th greatest movie character of all time by Empire Magazine. Just a few years prior, Connery was also offered the role of Morpheus in The Matrix, but he ultimately turned down the part because he didn’t understand the storyline. Morpheus went on to be played by Laurence Fishburne, which dramatically revived the actor’s career. After LOTR’s success, Connery decided to accept the lead role in the next movie script he didn’t understand, which led him to join the cast of 2003’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. According to producer Don Murphy, Connery said, “I got offered The Lord of the Rings, and I turned it down because I didn’t understand it. I was offered The Matrix twice, and I turned it down because I didn’t understand it. I don’t understand this movie, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to turn it down.”
The Role: Forrest Gump in Forrest Gump
In 1994, Forrest Gump became the highest grossing movie in all of North America. The film is undoubtedly one of the most beloved of all time, and a large part of that success is due to Tom Hanks’ timeless portrayal of the lead character, Forrest Gump. The role earned Hanks his second Oscar making him only the second actor in history to win an Academy Award for Best Actor two years in a row. Even an actor as talented as John Travolta could never replace Hanks or replicate what he did for the role of Forrest Gump, but
61 STYLETOME.COM
Travolta did have the opportunity to give it a shot. The Grease star was originally offered the lead role of Forrest, but ultimately decided to turn down the part. Unbelievably, Hanks also had to wait for Bill Murray and Chevy Chase to both pass up on the role before it was finally given to him. While most of the stars in our list publically claim they don’t regret turning down these iconic roles, Travolta is one of the few who has readily admitted to regretting his choice. The actor reportedly said that refusing the role wasn’t his best decision. In a cruel twist of fate— or simply due to bad luck—Travolta also refused roles in the successful films Splash and Apollo 13,which Hanks eventually went on to star in. Perhaps Travolta should consider hiring a new manager...
The Role: Cher Horowitz in Clueless
It must be tough as an actor to know that you turned down a role that went on to become legendary and iconic, but hindsight is always 20/20. Alicia Silverstone was crucial to the success of the 1995 sleeper hit Clueless, but history would’ve been very different if things had gone as originally planned. The lead role of Beverly Hills’ most spoiled and loveable airhead, Cher Horowitz, was originally offered to Sarah Michelle Gellar. When it became clear that filming would conflict with her shooting schedule on All My Children, Gellar made the tough decision to turn down the role. The part went to Alicia Silverstone instead and brought the unknown actress worldwide recognition. Clueless became a massive success, and Gellar remained a relatively unknown name until the late 90s when she secured the role of Buffy Summers on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show about a kickass vampire slayer made pop culture history and won the character numerous awards including No. 13 in Bravo’s list of The 100 Greatest TV Characters and AOL’s sixth Most Memorable Female TV Character. It’s impossible to tell if Clueless would have still gone down as a classic if Gellar had been portraying the lead character instead of Silverstone; perhaps it’s safe to say things all worked out for the best in the end.

Michael Woods, manager of Trevi’s, explained that the servers keep a direct line of communication with the chefs, and before the meals are prepared, chefs will come to the table to discuss the ingredients and preparation process of the meal. If you visit Trevi’s, a must-try is the homemade salsa made daily with fresh ingredients prepared by Allie Rivera, a cook who creates personal omelettes for morning guests. Rivera said over time she has modified and personalized the salsas offered to guests, providing four options for them to taste varying from sweet flavors to hints of hot flavors. WHAT’S THE TRUTH? By Courtney Caggiano
When it comes to Taylor Swift, most people can list off her dozens of exes, many can summarize her famous celebrity feuds, and a select few even know that her favorite number is 13. Although these facts may have nothing to do with music, their popularity represents a perfect illustration of what Taylor Swift has become: a pop culture statement. Oddly enough, while many “Swifties” may know all there is to be known about Taylor Swift the pop star, one fact of her career seems to have been forgotten over the years, a fact without which Taylor Swift most likely would not be a household name. Before her red-lipped, ex-boyfriend bashing world domination, Taylor Swift was once a country singer.
quite fascinating to look back on what was once a peasant dress-wearing, gangly girl with bouncing curls, who openly confessed her love for country star Tim McGraw in her debut single of the same name. If you were not a natural-born country music fan—which is probably the case if you’re head over heels with Taylor’s 1989 album—you most likely would not have come across this pre-pop Taylor while flipping through your favorite stations. In fact, you may not even recognize her if you go back and take a look at the girl who used to sing “Teardrops on My Guitar” for the boy she loves, rather than “We are Never Ever Getting Back Together” for the boy who came too late into the picture.
No, I’m not kidding. Nearly ten years ago, when most of today’s Taylor fans—who are now old enough to go on dates with their future breakups—were probably in preschool, Taylor Swift told the world that all she needed was a country song and an acoustic guitar; and it believed her, too, until fame made them both forget what she said.
In 2006, Taylor Swift released her eponymous debut album as a country project promoted by Big Machine Records when she was a mere 16 years old. This album was a fulfillment of many dreams of a former 13-year-old hopeful, who made visits to Nashville with her parents and eventually moved to the area to pursue a career in the most sacred form of music that has ever or will ever grace this great USA.
For you Taylor fans who are currently belting out “Bad Blood” on your way home from work or daydreaming in your bedroom to “Love Story”—which you may be referring to as one of Taylor’s “old” songs—you might want to take a few moments to do some Taylor Swift history homework. It really is
Country music itself may be changing, and maybe sacredness fades with time—consider recent song choices such as “Country Girl Shake It for Me” or the fact that, at the new venue of the Grand Ole Opry, country legend Loretta Lynn says that she doesn’t even get nervous anymore because the real makers
of song are few and far between. However, not even the changes of country music could compete with the evolution of Taylor Swift’s monumental career, and the 1989 album is proof enough of this claim. 1989, Taylor’s fifth studio album, was a thematic and sonic shift from the quasicountry music of albums like Fearless that allowed the singer to keep one foot in the country genre and the other in pop. Along with producers Max Martin and Shellback, Taylor created an album completely inspired by the music scene of the 1980s as well as the pop music of today. With skyrocketing hits like “Blank Space” and “Style,” 1989 was dubbed by critics as Taylor’s first official pop album, and compared to the now-pop star’s acoustic driven album from 2006, who can argue with that? By the way, Taylor fans, the singer will bring her massive 1989 World Tour to Tampa on October 31. This not-to-be-missed concert will be the perfect opportunity for you to discover the Taylor of the now. Filled with songs from 1989, plenty of outfit changes, and rumored special surprises, Taylor’s tour is sure to please the “Swifties” looking for that big, bright, Taylor Swift show where, for one night only, all of their wildest dreams will come true. However, remember that if you’re anything like Taylor, dreams that come true very often leave the dreamer behind.

As to his success in the courtroom, Lyle asserts, “I cannot ever guarantee a result, but I do guarantee I will exhaust every resource and I will bite like a crocodile and kick like a mule on my client’s behalf.” With a reputation for being a well prepared and captivating litigator, Lyle is a well respected figure in the legal community. ORLANDO’S NO. 1 READERS’ CHOICE STAGING REAL ESTATE AGENT
and 2014 and the Silver Pinnacle Award for 2014. She has also been selected as one of Orlando Style Magazine’s No. 1 Readers’ Choice realtors for 2015.
As an Accredited Staging Real Estate Agent in Florida for over 18 years, Lynda Miller has honed her craft and has become successful quite simply because she loves what she does, and what she gives her clients is professional perfection!
A dynamic part of the Central Florida community, Lynda has been married for 20 years to her husband, Bob, a pharmacist who owns a pharmacy staffing agency, and their daughter, Katie, attends Rollins College. Ava, their schnauzer, completes the Miller family.
Miller acknowledges that the idea of “home” is deeply personal. Her core belief is to provide excellent customer service and personalized care for every client she works with. She firmly believes that all aspects of the real estate industry are woven together, and this includes focusing on the aesthetics of the home. When Lynda enters a client’s home, she knows immediately what needs to be done. She
“WHEN I GO INTO A CLIENT’S HOME, MY FIRST AGREEMENT WITH THEM IS THAT IT IS NO LONGER THEIR HOME BUT A ‘PRODUCT’ ON THE MARKET FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO FALL IN LOVE WITH.” As well as staying busy with her clients, Lynda is working on the 4th Annual Watson Haunted House that she co-hosts with Watson Realty Corp. Wekiva office. The theme of this year’s Haunted House, which benefits the Second Harvest Food Bank, is “Dracula’s Castle”. This charity event, located at 317 Wekiva Springs Road in Longwood at the Watson Wekiva office, takes place October 22nd from 7-10 p.m., as well as the 23rd and 24th from 7-11 p.m. Admission is a minimum donation of two canned good items per person. While children under the age of 13 must be accompanied by an adult, there are two sides to Dracula’s Castle: a side that is scary and one that is less scary and suitable for young children. Adults and children are encouraged to dress for the occasion! Saturday, October 24th, there will be a costume contest at the Haunted House beginning at 6 p.m. Lynda welcomes you to join in the fun and become part of the compassionate Central Florida community that she is proud to be a part of as a Realtor.
has the ability to size up a room and visualize how it should be staged in order to earn top dollar. “When I go into a client’s home, my first agreement with them is that it is no longer their home but a ‘product’ on the market for someone else to fall in love with.” Miller’s marketing package maximizes a home’s value, and all staging services are offered to her clients. Beginning with selfselected complimentary accessories and furniture that can be utilized to properly transform a home or simply “polish” the existing décor, Miller then uses high quality photography to showcase the home’s possibilities for buyers. Her real estate staging talents give each client’s home an advantage over the competition because she understands what sellers need and ultimately what buyers want. Being a Real Estate Agent that specializes in staging homes has helped Lynda Miller earn Top Producer for Watson Wekiva in 2013

PAIN MANAGEMENT DOCTOR
A board certified anesthesiologist with a fellowship in pain management, Dr. Burry finished her residency in the specialty of anesthesiology at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. She then finished her fellowship in pain management through Moffitt Cancer Center and Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Burry obtained a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and worked as a pharmacist in Florida. Having a background in pharmacy is gives her a distinct advantage in her field as well as a unique perspective regarding the current regulatory challenges that cause difficulty for many medically managed patients with chronic pain. Research in pain care has resulted in new treatment options for patients making pain management an ever evolving specialty. A popular and effective treatment that Dr. Burry has been able to bring to Central Florida is Adult Stem Cell Therapy. This treatment is a non-surgical, minimally-invasive technique for pain caused by joint, tendon or ligament problems as an alternative to surgery. This new technique harnesses the immune system’s capacity for healing by utilizing the patient’s own stem cells. By providing long term relief with little to no down time, this in-office procedure has changed the lives of many patients who would otherwise live with significant disability Dr. Burry’s desire to provide compassionate care to those suffering from chronic pain is what led her into the subspecialty of pain management. Being able to care on a personal level for patients every day is the reason she continues to love her profession. Along with her friendly and professional staff, Dr. Burry looks forward to serving Central Florida for many years to come.

This past summer marks Dr. Juliet Burry’s 10th year in private practice in pain management. She
is happy with her decision to have founded Pain Management Institute & Aesthetics in Altamonte Springs as it allows her to work independently in giving each patient individualized care. She has created a flexible setting where she has more time and attention each case. During the past decade Dr. Burry has also had the opportunity to seek out and to provide her patients with innovative treatments to help them feel better and lead more productive lives. Having the freedom to choose among the innovative care models has allowed Dr. Burry to stay on the forefront of pain management in Central Florida.

ORLANDO’S NO. 1 READERS’ CHOICE Special Promotional Feature
he was named one of Florida Legal Elite's Top Rising Stars and for the past two years has been named one of the Top 100 Trial Attorneys in the Country by the National Trial Lawyers. He has found the work interesting, and rewarding. In February of 2011, he was preparing for a trial when his wife (pregnant with the younger son) called him and said "I think it's time." It was early, but she was right. William was born at 37 weeks, and he had a surprise for his family: Down syndrome. Despite prenatal screenings, they had no idea. "That's not uncommon," says Ryan, who is the immediate past president of the Board of Directors for the Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida (DSACF). "Many of the people we've met along our journey have a similar story. Normal pregnancy, normal delivery, nothing out of the ordinary, and then a doctor steps into your hospital room looking very serious, and tells you your baby has Down syndrome." It's shocking, he admits, and there's a better way to handle it. Will is four years old now, a charming and gregarious kid with a quick smile and a high five for anyone who wants one. The Hayes family presented to the medical students at UCF last year, Will included, on how to deliver a postnatal Down syndrome diagnosis. What not to say ("He can probably bag groceries someday." "He could be like Corky from Life Goes On!" "I'm so sorry.") and what to say ("Congratulations!"). Family is the most important thing to Ryan. With that in mind, he left the big firm life in September of 2014 to start a boutique firm with Albert Yonfa (Yonfa Hayes). They wanted to offer more personal service to fewer clients, to meet them all personally and offer their full attention to each and every client. It was a big leap, and it wasn't easy, but both partners had their families to support them and help get them on their feet. A year in, they're starting to see the fruits of their labor. Clients are referring other clients. Business is good!

RYAN HAYES ORLANDO’S NO. 1 READERS’ CHOICE PERSONAL INJURY ATTORNEY
Ryan Hayes seeks inspiration from many places. The thirty-seven-year-old personal injury lawyer works out of a cozy office just south of downtown Orlando with his partner and friend, Albert Yonfa, where their strategy sessions are observed by a few unusual spectators: a Daredevil statue. A framed photo of John F. Kennedy with a toddling John John peeking out from under his desk. A lightsaber. Hundreds of photos of his family: his wife, Judi (Garabo), and sons Jack (7) and Will (4). Each is a reminder of his commitment to helping others and making the world a better, and fairer, place. It's an overarching theme in his work, his home life, and his commitment to serving others. His career trajectory seemed rather formulaic, at one point: graduate from law school, get a job, meet a girl, fall in love, get married, have kids. Judi, also a lawyer, quit practicing to stay home with their first child, Jack, a funny, smart and kind child. Ryan moved from insurance defense work to personal injury trial practice, working for the largest plaintiff's firm in the state, if not the country. He was a natural, easily conferring with clients and crafting legal arguments. A few years ago,
Ryan volunteers his time with the Board of Directors for DSACF out of a sense of obligation to help the next generation of parents of children with Down syndrome and in furtherance of his strong belief of full inclusion in our society of all people. Public education advocacy is another of Ryan's passions, and he walks the walk. "Whenever I meet elected officials, I always ask: where do your kids go to school? I want to know who's putting their money where their mouth is. My kids are perfect examples of how any kid can learn in public schools." Like many American families, soccer rules in the Hayes household! Both boys are playing for South Orlando Soccer Club this fall, in u8 and u5 divisions. Ryan coaches both teams, and plays in an adult men's league, and in his spare time, he completed a certification course to become a soccer referee. "The yellow and red cards come in handy at home with the boys," he jokes. They all enjoy going to Orlando City games, and Jack was fortunate enough to walk out on the field with the players and attend a training session. This summer, they stuck around after one game to meet Kaka and get an autograph. “Our firm allows me to fight for those in their toughest hours and enables me to make a difference in their lives. Being a trial attorney allows me to champion their causes to a jury of their peers and I am honored each and every time that I get to do it.”

PREGNANCY DISCRIMINATION AND THE FLORIDA CIVIL RIGHTS ACT: A LABOR OF LOVE… By Mark NeJame
Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley
Be comforted knowing that if you ever find yourself or a loved one discriminated against for being pregnant, Florida’s got your back. named after an employee who sued her employer for discriminatory behavior after she informed them she was an expecting mother. The issue centered around the fact that the Florida Civil Rights Act failed to expressly protect pregnant women. Sadly, this was true: the FCRA historically expressly protected individuals from discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, handicap, or marital status (Section 760.01, F.S., (2011)), but never contemplated pregnant women as a protected class. That all changed when Delva reached the Florida Supreme Court, which ruled that “discrimination based
Ah, October. Roll up your sleeves and get involved! It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, National Diabetes Month, National Pasta Month, National Sausage Month, National Pizza Month and so much more! (Umm, where did I put that bulky fall sweater?). But for today, we’ll leave the comfort food aside and discuss the importance of pregnancy rights. This section of civil rights labor law has become a super hot topic in the past two years, ever since the Florida Supreme Court heard a case relating to the issue in 2014. We will call that case “Delva,” 86
ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
on pregnancy is in fact discrimination based on sex because it is discrimination as to a natural condition unique to only one sex.” The Court included protection for pregnant women within the already-existing sex discrimination provision. This decision was so important that it was codified as statutory law, which now reads:
N o r m a N ’ s at t h e r i t z - C a r lto N
o r l a N d o, G r a N d e l a k e s
“The general purposes of the Florida Civil Rights Act of 1992 are to secure for all individuals within the state freedom from discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex, pregnancy, national origin, age, handicap, or marital status and thereby to protect their interest in personal dignity, to make available to the state their full productive capacities, to secure the state against domestic strife and unrest, to preserve the public safety, health, and general welfare, and to promote the interests, rights, and privileges of individuals within the state.” (Section 760.01, F.S., (2015)). This amendment is huge for mothers-to-be, for now they have causes of action under both state and federal law (the federal counterpart is codified as The Pregnancy Discrimination Act, under Title VII of Civil Rights Act of 1964). There are advantages and disadvantages to filing a claim under either federal or state law, depending on the facts, damages involved and overall goal to be achieved. This is a highly fact-intensive area of law, so contacting an attorney who specializes in employment law is extremely important. It cannot be stressed enough how important time is in when dealing with these types of claims; deadlines for filing these types of lawsuits have strict time limitations and if those deadlines are ignored, a potential plaintiff may forever waive her right to sue. But wait, there’s more! Let’s talk breastfeeding. Ladies, you are absolutely 100% by law allowed to breastfeed your baby anywhere in public, so long as you are in a place where you are legally allowed to be. What about covering up, you say? Nope, not necessary. Free that nipple if you want; Florida law recognizes and encourages maternal nurturing.

So the Unsung Hero Award goes out to…. The Florida Legislature. Boo, I know, it pains us to admit it at times, but good – no great – laws DO come out of Tallahassee. So be proud to be a Floridian this October. Do a good deed, eat your pizza topped sausage with a side of pasta, and be comforted knowing that if you ever find yourself or a loved one discriminated against for being pregnant, Florida’s got your back. SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature
DEA POLICIES ARE DENYING PAIN RELIEF TO THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST By Mark L. Horwitz | Orlando Criminal Defense Attorney
Mark L. Horwitz The DEA enforces drug laws, including laws affecting the filling of pain prescriptions by pharmacists. As part of its enforcement efforts, the DEA routinely visits pharmacies and reviews records to determine if the pharmacist lived up to DEA’s regulations and unofficial guidelines. All pharmacies are subject to the scrutiny of the DEA, from individually owned pharmacies to major national companies. While the DEA’s efforts are aimed at stopping the illegal sale of drugs, including pain medication, its actions in relation to pharmacies has had devastating consequences for many law abiding members of the Central Florida community.
The harm caused by the DEA’s enforcement efforts is borne most heavily by those who are sick and in pain. Cancer patients, accident victims, those recuperating from serious surgery, as well as many others suffering severe pain, have found it difficult, if not impossible to have pain medication prescriptions filled. Pain medicine, such as Oxycodone, Hydrocodone, Oxycontin and Percocet are denied to law abiding people who are suffering from severe pain. Pharmacists are refusing to fill the prescriptions because of the actions by the DEA. WESH Channel 2, in a special investigative report entitled A State of Pain, shed light on this problem. The report by WESH included many interviews that revealed the human cost in pain and suffering being endured by Central Floridians as a result of the DEA’s misguided policies and arbitrary second guessing of pharmacists. DEA officials were interviewed about the negative impact upon the public caused by the DEA’s enforcement practices and claimed no responsibility. Perhaps the DEA does not recognize its own power and the impact of misguided enforcement policies upon pharmacists.
It’s time to make the world a better place to drive.

Several state and federal legislatures have commented that they are looking into the DEA’s enforcement policies and its effect in depriving legitimately suffering patients from filling needed prescriptions for pain medicine. The special report by WESH helped to raise public awareness of this serious problem. Congressmen and Senators from Florida should take action to help those living in pain to fill legitimate prescriptions. It is time to stop the pain and suffering caused by the DEA’s misguided pressure on pharmacists. Law Offices of Mark L. WANT TO START THE NEW YEAR TIRED, & SNORE THROUGH ANOTHER YEAR? THEN DON’T READ THIS TESTIMONIAL! Snoring is the vibration of
respiratory structures and the resulting sound due to obstructive air movement
during breathing while sleeping. Snoring can be a symptom of Obstructive Sleep Apnea but not everyone who snores has the sleep disorder. Here is a testimonial from a patient I treated with an oral sleep appliance: I am a Board Certified Physician. My schedule is extremely demanding and has me working all hours of the day and night. As a result, my sleep is not regular, nor would I consider it in line with good, healthy sleep. As a result, I snore quite loudly so much that it affects my sleep and those around me. The SomnoMed Oral Sleep Appliance was suggested to me by Dr. Carl Bilancione, Cosmetic and Comprehensive Dentistry. I put it in when I lie down; it protrudes my jaw slightly, thus causing a more anatomically open airway. It is not uncomfortable to wear and built to the alignment of my mouth. The process to make the molds takes about 30 minutes-no more time than a regular dental appointment. There is absolutely no work involved. The process is extremely comfortable. What I have noticed is a more restful sleep. I wake up refreshed no matter what my schedule. Further, my family is less affected by my snoring-which, is all but gone. This device allows the patient’s airway to remain anatomically open while you sleep. It can decrease snoring as well as assist those with the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. While it is not a cure, those with limited symptoms can greatly improve their lives. I encourage you to see if the SomnoMed Oral Sleep Appliance is appropriate for you.
In closing as a general dentist it is imperative that I work with a team of experts and these professionals are part of my team.

DO I HAVE A WHEAT ALLERGY
OR GLUTEN INTOLERANCE? By Jose R. Arias, Jr. M.D. | Allergy & Immunology Expert mind that buckwheat is not related to wheat. The Federal Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act requires that all packaged food sold in the United States that contains wheat as an ingredient must list the word “Wheat” on the label. Wheat allergy can cause a skin rash or hives, stomach cramp, indigestion, vomit or diarrhea. It can also cause stuffy and runny nose, sneezing and headaches just like being around a cat or dog. Wheat allergy can also lead to anaphylaxis or a severe allergic reaction that can cause problems breathing and lead to death. Anaphylaxis requires the use of epinephrine intramuscular autoinjectors available by prescription to help reverse the symptoms of anaphylaxis.

Wheat allergy and gluten intolerance, better known as celiac disease, are similar in some respects, but they are not identical. When you have a wheat allergy it’s like having a dog or cat allergy, which occurs when the body’s immune system becomes sensitized or “allergic” and overreacts to something in the environment (wheat, dog or cat) that normally does not cause a problem in most non allergic people. Keep in
Celiac disease (also known as Celiac Sprue) is caused by an abnormal reaction by the immune system to gluten in the small intestine. Celiac disease is both a food intolerance and an autoimmune disorder. Gluten is a protein found in various grains such as barley, rye, wheat, buckwheat, corn, rice, soy and sometimes oats, to name a few. When individuals with celiac disease eat products containing gluten,

damage can occur in the lining of the small intestine. People with celiac disease typically can experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating or diarrhea and if untreated may cause malnutrition and other complications, such as osteoporosis and anemia. Dr. Arias has been named a “Top Doctor” in the field of allergy and immunology for four years in a row. He is an experienced allergy and immunologist specialist who regularly assists both adults and children in managing their allergies, asthma, and immune system diseases. BEST FRIENDS
When Puppy Meets Baby Debunking the Allergy Myth By Alexandra Mariano For a lot of new and future parents out there, the thought of keeping a dog alongside your newborn might be a bit intimidating. There’s always been a constant
influx of mixed messages regarding pets and babies. You’ve heard it all, from dogs being harmful to children’s health and causing allergies to dogs actually improving your child’s health—but what effect do dogs actually have on our babies? As far as the myth that owning dogs can lead to allergies in children, people who make that claim probably don’t fully understand how allergies work. Allergic reactions happen when the body becomes exposed to new microbes and mistakes them as a threat, going after the allergens the same way it would attack a virus or anything else nasty it doesn’t want in its system. In the case of pet allergies, the allergen in question is not the fur, but instead either the dander (dead skin flakes), saliva, or urine. Anyone can develop an allergy at any time—all it takes is a glitch in our immune system.
The main factor in whether or not a person develops an allergy lies in genetics. If both parents have a dog allergy, then the child is 70% likely to develop a dog allergy; if only one parent has a dog allergy, then the likelihood drops down to 33%. Besides family history, the other 30 or 67% is mostly left up to chance. There is some merit, however, in that raising a dog side by side with your child could help prevent a future allergy from happening. Because allergic reactions result from an over-protective immune system, exposing

potential allergens to a baby while their immune system is still maturing provides an early clue for the body that says, “Okay, this pet dander is supposed to be here. It’s not a threat, and I don’t have to fight it off.” Several scientific studies have closely followed households with children from infancy to adolescence, documenting any pets and health patterns. The majority of results revealed that babies who grew up with animals cut their allergy risk in half as a teenager—but with a couple of interesting twists. First of all, having a pet only makes

a significant impact during a newborn’s first year of life, the most crucial period of the immune system’s development. If a family introduced a dog after the baby’s first birthday, their allergy risk as a teenager went unaffected. The second twist is that children raised with dogs, especially indoor/outdoor ones, grew up to be generally healthier—not just in the allergy department—than those who lived their childhoods pet-free. This is because all the dirt, grass, and other ‘unclean’ outside particles found clinging to canine fur provides babies with more bacterial exposure than a sterile environment, thus actually priming the immune system for how to successfully handle the real world later on. There has been zero evidence to suggest that new parents should sacrifice pets for the sake of their child’s future health—so rest assured that your furry best friend and your bundle of joy can coexist harmoniously. If there’s still that nagging in the back of your mind, though, dog allergies can always be handled well. The best method is simply to clean; reduce the opportunities for pesky dander to stick around by having minimal carpet, washing bedding, and vacuuming regularly. Additionally, although there is no truly hypoallergenic dog, some breeds do mix better with allergies than others. Poodles, terriers, and schnauzers are thought to produce the least amount of dander, but our top three picks are:
Bichon Frise: A tiny, energetic powder puff
dog. Their smaller surface area and curly hair equals less dander.
Portuguese Water Dog: The White House’s loyal, sporty breed of choice loves kids.
Xoloitzcuintli:
This calm, hairless Mexican pooch is one of the world’s oldest breeds. Having trouble with pronunciation? It’s “showlow-eets-kweent-lee.”
