WAYS TO MAKE

2020 YOUR YEAR!

By Sara Cody

We’ve all heard the phrase “new year, new me” at the beginning of every year for what feels like an eternity. To most, this looks like a new hair color or getting a gym membership that you’ll forget about by Valentine’s Day. Instead, it should be “new year, better me.” Start off your 2020 by trashing the famous fleeting “New Year’s resolution” and focus on incorporating small lifestyle changes into your every day. Master self love- Self love is a broad term with different meanings for everybody. Self love can be cuddling up with a good book or treating yourself to a new outfit. We can practice self love, but to master self love is to believe in and accept ourselves for who we truly are. An excellent place to start is with positive affirmations and mantras. It is important to find positive words that feel tailor made to you, but you can start with this one: “I accept and love myself as I am.” Try repeating this to yourself in the mirror and throughout your day...in the car, at the gym, in the shower! You’ll be surprised by the power of positive words. Hold yourself accountable- With self love comes self discipline. Remember those fleeting resolutions I mentioned? 2020 is the year of setting goals and actually taking steps toward achieving them. Imagine the direction you want your life to be in by the end of the year and create attainable milestones for yourself. There is no better time than now. Invest in a journal- Life doesn’t slow down for anybody, and sometimes our mind resembles an internet browser with too many tabs open. Your journal entries can vary from to-do lists to love poems. No matter what you decide to write about, self expression is always a good way to mentally de-clutter. You might even notice some negative thought processes you possess so you can break the habit.

Embrace your solitude- We all have things that we want to do but have nobody to do them with. You grow as a person when you stop waiting around for other people to live your life. You don’t need a partner for everything. Go to that concert alone, take yourself out on a date. Jump on a plane and explore that city you’ve always dreamed of. You will be surprised what you learn about yourself when you choose to be your own best friend. A lot of people think that doing things alone has to be lonely, but it is in fact the opposite. Allow yourself to feel empowered by the courage to do things alone. Plus, you don’t know who you might meet in your solitude. Be more present- Along with doing things alone comes the overall ability to be more present in your life. Take a break from social media, whether that means deleting social media apps off your phone or just decreasing screen time. Do what works best for you. When you find yourself feeling insecure while browsing social media, take a hiatus. Try to focus on the simple pleasures of life. Take a few moments to jot down some things you’re grateful for in your own life. When you’re with people, put your phone away. Put your energy into a new hobby to resist the temptation to check your Facebook likes every five minutes. Derail from the habit of documenting everything you do. Soon enough, you might not even feel the desire to use social media anymore.

B Y D AW N H A R R I S S H E R L I N G , M . D . , F. A . C . P.

There is an old Edgar Allen Poe story where a man starts walking down a catacomb path, thinking he is just going on an ordinary journey, when his companion starts to bury him alive. The companion is carrying all the tools he needs to bury his “friend” and is even hinting that he might do so, but the man ignores all the warnings and merrily continues alongside his companion. That’s sort of what the flu is like. Just like the man, oblivious to the signs he is being given, no one thinks the flu might kill them. It is often lumped together with the ordinary cold, as in “cold and flu season” or “cold and flu remedies.” This is an unfortunate juxtaposition because it minimizes what the flu is and what it can do to the human body. We ignore warnings about the flu at our own peril. The flu, or influenza, is not a bad cold. It is also not a stomach virus. If you have the sniffles and a low-grade fever less than 100.5, odds are, it is not the flu. The flu is an infection with Influenza virus A or B. And if you’ve had it, you feel like you’ve been hit by a truck. Getting out of bed might prove challenging. Every muscle in your body will ache. Your temperature will likely go above 101. You may not feel like eating and have some nausea. Most people will have a little bit of a runny nose, possibly a sore throat, and oftentimes a cough. That’s what the flu has in common with a cold, which is caused by a different bunch of viruses. But you’ve never had a cold like this. When you have the flu, it is a struggle to do anything— at least for the first few days and up to a week. After that, and with a good immune system and a touch of luck (a healthy immune system does not guarantee recovery from the flu), you will start to feel better. But, unlike the common cold, it can take a month or longer to fully recover from the flu. That’s what happens to most people who have the flu. Other people don’t get better after a few days. They get worse. And while it is usually the very old, the very young, people who are already sick with a chronic

20

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

disease, or pregnant women who get life threatening complications from the flu, almost every internist, pulmonologist, and infectious disease doctor has a story of at least one formerly healthy, young or middleaged adult who succumbed to the flu. Who might this young person who does not survive the flu be? In truth, it could be any of us. And that’s what is most scary about the flu. It can strike down anyone. For the 2017-2018 flu season, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimated nearly 80,000 deaths in the U.S. were caused by flu. Of these, over 10,000 occurred in adults 18-64 years old (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/ burden/2017-2018.htm). What can you do to protect yourself from becoming a victim of the flu? First, unlike the man in the Edgar Allen Poe story, recognize that you are at risk. Second, get a flu shot. Any given flu season, it’s usually about 50% effective at preventing infection from influenza. So, the flu shot may not keep you from getting the flu. But neither will your seat belt prevent you from getting into a car accident. It will, however, protect you from dying if you should get into an accident. And that’s the best sales pitch for the flu shot. Very few people who have had the vaccination wind up in the hospital with the flu, and even fewer wind up sick enough to have to go to the ICU. If you should get the flu, the CDC estimates that getting the flu shot reduces the risk of winding up in the ICU by 82% in adults (https://www.cdc.gov/ flu/vaccines-work/vaccineeffect.htm). If, despite your best efforts, you should contract the flu, the best thing you can do is rest, drink lots of fluids, and take antiinflammatory medication to feel better. If you contact your doctor within the first few days of getting sick, he or she can prescribe a medication that may shorten the course of the flu by a day or two. The best thing you can do for your friends and coworkers if you are sick is to stay away. Keep sick kids out of school too. The flu can quickly turn into a horror story, and we should all try to keep each other safe during flu season.

Okidanokh

Timeless Handcrafted Jewelry in the Heart of Orlando By Khadejah Khan A multigenerational family-owned business, Okidanokh (pronounced o-key-da-knock) shines a spotlight on opulent yet understated jewelry. Each perfectly hand-crafted piece is a testament to traditional European style goldsmith techniques, fabricating each earring, necklace, bracelet, or ring from the raw material itself. Goldsmith Jala Fabri and her team of apprentices are committed to save a dying art, breathing new life into each timeless creation. When I first walked into Okidanokh, I was greeted to the ambiance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, a curved coral couch, and soothing tropical colored art on the walls. This fittingly encompassed the store’s history: classic designs born over the last 40 years in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Jala’s father Abel Fabri, an esoteric and spiritual man, named his jewelry store after the philosophical idea of okidanokh. “It’s a substance that permeates the universe and controls creative energy,” Jala explains. “As human beings, we have to be aware of and accept okidanokh into our lives to continue to be creative and have creative thought.” She tells me that many goldsmiths keep making the same pieces they’ve always made. “We’re constantly creating new designs and continue to evolve.”

Jala Fabri “WE’RE CONSTANTLY CREATING NEW DESIGNS AND CONTINUE TO EVOLVE.”

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

This philosophy is evident in their jewelry. Traditional pieces have a new spin on them, such as textured rings for men, tastefully crafted interchangeable bracelets and chain-link necklaces, and buildable stack rings. The issue of frequently lost earring backs are solved by innovative twist-in and straight wire earrings. And don’t be fooled by the delicate design. “Our jewelry is built to last,” says Jala. “By hand fabricating it, you create a certain amount of tension and have more control over what your finished product is.” Classic yet contemporary, the designs boast clean lines that allow many pieces to function as unisex and versatile jewelry for all ages. “Do you keep up with the latest trends to draw inspiration for your designs?” I ask Jala. “We keep up with trends in color,” she replies. She recalls the changing styles from platinum, to white gold, to yellow gold, and the boom of rose gold only a few years earlier. “Because we aim for timeless designs, color will always be relevant.” Jala also emphasized that the artistry and craftsmanship of the jewelry is what makes it eternal. “We pay a lot of attention to very fine, small details,” she says. “Over time people seem to enjoy the jewelry even

more” by discovering and appreciating new details each time you admire your piece, such as rounded edges for a comfortable fitting ring or symmetric earrings. Additionally, Okidanokh offers customization and creation from scratch. They’ll also reset gemstones from old heirlooms into a timeless design. They’ve made first baby earrings, traditional West Indian bangles, and engagement rings. They can outsource diamonds within a couple’s budget, create a design, and make a matching wedding band for the groom. They also have an inventory of colorful and differently cut gemstones available for selection, and an even larger collection in St. Thomas to choose from. “We only work with natural gemstones and aim to maintain their integrity,” says Jala, as she shows me three different natural tints of pearls. She’s been the primary gem buyer for the store for more than 10 years. Unlike other jewelry shops that purchase their gemstones in bulk, Jala handselects each stone for cut and color, preserving the craftsmanship of goldsmithing and the okidanokh philosophy. I ask Jala whether trends in fashion, such as statement necklaces and bulky earrings, will ever appear at Okidanokh. “No,” she replies. “I’ve seen jewelry that is very artsy, but it doesn’t withstand the test of time. We make timeless pieces that look good today, are fashionable tomorrow, and will still be relevant in 30 years.” From men and women to young and old, this modest yet opulent jewelry store has everlasting pieces for everyone. Through thoughtfully executed designs and carefully selected stones, Okidanokh marries tradition and modernity while upholding the artisanship of jewelry-making. The result is a timeless and versatile range of jewelry that emanates classic and innate beauty. Okidanokh is located at 1217 N. Orange Ave., Orlando, FL 32804

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

BEST HOLIDAY ALBUMS OF 2019 by Courtney Caggiano Idina Menzel Christmas: A Season of Love

MARIAH CAREY Merry Christmas Deluxe Anniversary Edition By Courtney Caggiano

No musical artist can get us in the holiday spirit quite like Mariah Carey, and this season, the “All I Want For Christmas Is You” singer has released a deluxe version of her iconic Christmas album. Upon the 1994 debut of her now-classic Merry Christmas, the chart-topping performer redefined holiday music with the album’s festive game-changing lead single that reimagined contemporary Christmas music. With “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” Mariah proved that holiday classics are not limited to the crooners of decades past. Now, 25 years later, Merry Christmas Deluxe Anniversary Edition has kicked off the celebratory winter season with previously unreleased tracks and exclusive bonus material, including live performance recordings. The album also includes fresh takes on Christmas favorites, such as Mariah’s twist on “Sugar Plum Fairy,” “The Star,” and more. The legendary songstress also teams up with John Legend in an unforgettable collaboration, “When Christmas Comes.” In celebration of 25 years of Mariah’s signature holiday hit, “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” this single track will be reissued in collectable physical formats, including CD, 7” and 12” vinyl, and a coveted green cassette, complete with pop-out holiday decorations. Mariah is also treating listeners to brand new video of this groundbreaking smash, in which fans will get a glimpse of never-before-seen footage. You won’t want to begin your holiday season without a copy of Merry Christmas Deluxe Anniversary Edition, available for purchase or streaming today, and don’t forget to fill your loved ones’ stockings with the physical formats of “All I Want For Christmas Is You,” releasing December 20.

Fresh from the screen in Frozen 2, the Broadway singer and actress is showcasing her vocal talent as well as her love of the holiday season. The artist released her new Christmas album just weeks before she thrilled fans once again in her role as Queen Elsa. With songs like “Sleigh Ride” and “Winter Wonderland,” Menzel captures the excitement and wonder of December magic. Bing Crosby Bing at Christmas The voice of Bing Crosby has been synonymous with the anticipation of Christmas, as his iconic recordings of holiday classics have become as essential to the winter months as snowmen and sleigh rides. In Bing at Christmas, Crosby’s legendary status is honored as the London Symphony Orchestra reimagines the singer’s beloved songs, including the favorite, “White Christmas.” Phil Wickham Christmas One of America’s favorite inspirational singers is back with his second holiday album, “Christmas,” full of timeless carols that remind you of the true meaning of Christmas spirit. Songs like “Joy To The World” and “What Child Is This” will warm your soul with heavenly hope and fill you with peace as you watch another year come to an end. Lea Michele Christmas in the City The star of ABC’s Same Time, Next Christmas invites you to celebrate the season with fun-filled, vibrant takes on Christmas staples like “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree,” as well as her own original numbers, including “Christmas In New York.” With an impeccable voice and a gift for writing her own seasonal songs, Christmas in the City encapsulates the magic and the hustle and bustle of most wonderful time of the year.

TAME YOUR MANE 5 no-heat styles for unruly hair By Shelby Newman

We’ve all been there - in a hurry to get ready in the morning and your outrageous bedhead just isn’t cooperating. It’s tempting to whip out the flat iron and crank it up to high heat, but doing this often will only weaken the quality of your hair. Whether it be frizz, out of control curls, hair that’s too thick, or even too thin, we’ve got the no-heat styles that are going to change your hair routine for the better. 1. Double French Braids The two french braid look is not only trendy, but it encompasses all parts of your hair, leaving no room for ‘hairrors’. Begin by fully brushing hair so there are no tangles. Next, part your hair in the middle and separate into two sections. Braid hair, starting close to the root, all the way down one side of your head and repeat on the other side. Finish with a light hairspray to control any flyaways. This look takes only minutes to accomplish and leaves hair looking sleek and trendy without the heat. 2. Sleek Pony A slicked back ponytail is one of the most underrated styles in the game. The movie Mean Girls says that you should only wear a ponytail once a week, but we would argue that you can rock this look all the time! Ariana Grande is infamous for her iconic high ponytail that she wears for almost

38

any occasion. Other red carpet celebrities have been seen sporting this look to formal events because it’s so easy to make it suitable for any type of event. Begin by brushing through hair to eliminate tangles. Next, apply a generous amount of hair mousse to the root area of your hair and brush it through. Using a hair elastic, tie hair in a tight ponytail, leaving out a small section. Wrap the left-out section of hair around the exposed hair tie to cover it and secure with a bobby pin. Finally, use a light hairspray to tame flyaways and keep the look in place all day. 3. Top Knot Bun No matter what problems your mane faces, you can always rely on a trustee top knot bun to save you in a hair emergency. After brushing through tangles, put your hair in a high ponytail, secured with a hair elastic. Next, begin wrapping hair in a twisting motion around the base of the ponytail. Once the bun is formed, wrap another hair elastic around it. Pull out small pieces from both sides of the front of your head to give it a more tousled look. If thin hair is your issue, use a bun donut at the base of your ponytail to give the illusion of thickness. 4. Down and Natural If you’re someone with unruly hair, you know that product is your best friend when wearing your

hair down. Never skip the leave-in conditioner after a shower. To construct waves and curls, use a curl constructing mousse on damp hair and scrunch it a few times and then don’t touch it anymore. The more you touch your hair, the more that frizz and oil from your hands will destroy your look. Finish with a light hairspray or argan oil for dry or damaged hair. Hair should dry looking fresh and controlled. 5. Double French Twists This look is a ‘twist’ on the classic french braid, but instead of braiding with three strands of hair you only need to use two. Begin by brushing out your hair and parting it in the middle. Grab a generously sized piece of hair located in the front of your head and split it in two. Next, twist the two pieces once and add more hair the bottom strand. Continue this pattern until you’ve reached the bottom of your head and repeat on the other side of your head. Secure the ends with a hair elastic and put hair in a low ponytail, bun, or even leave it down. Finish the look with a light hairspray to prevent flyaways. No matter your hair type, these no-heat styles will keep you looking fresh all year long without the burden of heat damage.

Pajama Couture 2020 Chances are, your five-year-old self had, at some point, tried to wear pajamas out of the house. The chances are also high that, unless you had exceptionally cool parents, you were forbidden to do so. Fortunately, wearing pajamas out of the house is officially in, and your five-year-old self is screaming. Never again will you have to choose between comfort and style, because some of today’s hottest trends feature pajamas that you can wear in and out of the bedroom, and look great while doing it.

1. Silk Sets Matching sets are the perfect one-and-done outfit for any occasion. Celebrities like Gigi Hadid and Selena Gomez have been spotted flaunting chic silk sets. Go for a trendy pattern like striped or plaid that isn’t too busy. You can pair it with minimalist shoes like stilettos to make this a look that’s sure to turn a few heads. 2. Joggers There’s nothing more on-trend than combining sleek and slouchy pieces. The Kardashians are infamous for including sweatpants in their classy street style. In order to avoid looking like you just rolled out of bed, it’s important to find staple accessories that will complement such casual pants, like heeled booties and a trench coat or a blazer. 3. Wide-Leg Pants Wide-leg pants are not only comfortable, but a stylish way to execute pajama couture. Make

sure the leg of your pants hits no further than two inches above the ankle. This way, the pants will look clean and put together, rather than swallowing your lower half with fabric. To style them, you’ll want to pick out a top that accentuates your waist. To finish off the look, choose simple shoes, like flats, that won’t take too much attention away from the pants. 4. Lace Camisoles A lace camisole is a classic piece that will never date. There are lots of ways to dress it up, like pairing with a leather skirt and heels. If you are looking to go the more casual route, you can pair with jeans and boots. Either way, you’ll reap the comfort of wearing pajamas and the stylishness of an upscale outfit. 5. Robes The robe is debatably the most iconic statement piece in pajama couture. It is extremely versatile and can be worn a number of ways – as a dress, a jacket, or even a top. In the wintertime, robes can become great layering pieces, worn with a lighter top under it and even with heavier jackets over it. At first glance, you might think these styles look like you forgot to get dressed this morning. But the reality is, loungewear is the new streetwear. Take advantage of the comfort and style this trend offers because pajama couture is the ultimate I woke up like this.

Hand Bags A woman’s purse is a vital component of her outfit. A cheetah print or snakeskin bag is a foolproof way to complement your look without the commitment of wearing a risky piece that can’t be removed.

The Hydration Boost You Didn’t Know You Needed Winter is the prime time for dry and cracking lips, hair, and skin. Dehydration is often the culprit, but in the winter months, cool, dry air is to blame. Tackle dry, peeling, unmanageable skin before it even happens by stocking up on our favorite chilly weather essentials. A hydrating skin mist is the secret tool you won’t know you were missing until you try it. Mists can be sprayed on the face, with or without makeup, so it’s the perfect midday pick-me-up when your skin starts to look like it needs some extra glow. The other must-have product is a moisturizing lip balm that will nourish and protect lips from drying out. It’s important to throw one of these bad boys in your bag every time you leave for easy access to reapplication.

Trash the low tops and walk into this season with the boldest kicks. We know what you’re thinking - the “ugly sneaker” trend is back, and you’re right! It’s back, and this time, the chunky sneakers are even better than before, with neon colors and patterns. These are hands down (or perhaps, feet down) the perfect way to amp up any outfit. If you’re style is a little more minimalistic, you can still rock this look by opting for more muted colors and exploring texture instead. If you’re a style daredevil, go for animal prints or colorful patterns. Either way, this trend looks fresh with staple street wear like joggers, or even in replacement of dress shoes, to tone down business attire for a more casual look.

Bleach Blonde Hair

Everything you need to know to cross over to the light side. Men everywhere are taking the peroxide plunge and bleaching their hair. This raises the question, should adult men be playing hair salon? We think yes! The dramatic contrast between naturally dark hair and the platinum locks is a hot trend. If you’re still having reservations about changing your hair, just look at celebrities like Pete Davidson, Jonah Hill, and even Zac Efron, who followed the trend in 2019. Before you run to the store and purchase your first bottle of bleach, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. Bleach is very damaging to your hair, especially when used incorrectly. If it’s left on for too long, it can cause irreversible damage, and in that case,

you might end up rocking a buzz cut. Go to a trained hair professional rather than trying to DIY at home, especially if you have long or dark hair that may be difficult to bleach. That way, you know for sure your hair will be in good hands. It’s true that blondes have more fun, but there is an element of maintenance required to keep the fun going. Keep your locks shining bright with a toner like a purple shampoo or purple mousse. Applying a toner once a week can ensure the bleach won’t turn a brassy color. And as much as you love to use men’s three-in-one, invest in a hydrating conditioner that will keep your hair from looking and feeling like straw.

BEAUTY Mastering the No Makeup, Makeup Look Just because it’s winter time doesn’t mean you need to layer on the heavy makeup everyday. It can be beneficial to your skin and pores to take a break from the full coverage foundation every once in a while and opt for a lighter, more natural look. Knowing how to accentuate the three essential parts of the face - lips, eyes, and brows, can help you to achieve the fresh, glowing look you’ve been striving for, without seeming like you only did your makeup halfway. Skip the lipstick and apply a lip balm or natural-colored tinted lip gloss to hydrate lips. Matte lip products are often drying and can appear unnatural. Under the eyes, neutralize dark circles with a brightening concealer to give the face a more awake look. You can also apply a light coat of mascara to the lashes, but avoid fake lashes and too many layers of mascara, which can develop clumps. Most importantly, fleek brows are the end-all beauty hack that can change the entire look of your face. Keep up on grooming to conserve their shape, and be sure to brush them out. A clear gel is helpful to keep brows in place throughout the day. Finish the look with a dewy setting spray, to leave skin looking pure and refreshed.

Beyond the Gold & Glitter

5 fresh New Year’s looks to ring in 2020 With the New Year right around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about the best ways to show your New Year’s spirit without sporting that old sparkly gold dress that has seen too many countdowns. Break out of your New Year’s rut and follow these five fresh looks. Whether you’re going to a black-tie event or a casual party, there’s something for everyone. Gold Jewelry It really is the little things that matter. Jewelry is one of the simplest ways to accessorize an outfit for a special occasion. Layer gold rings, bracelets, necklaces and even earrings for the ideal pop of festivity for the New Year. Silk Jumpsuits Dress it up or dress it down - this is the ultimate holiday look no matter what your plans are. Silk is a classy replacement for overused trends like sparkles and sequins, and it’s sure to make you stand out. Champagne Nails A woman’s nails are as much a part of her outfit as her top, so you shouldn’t leave them out of the

celebration. Ditch the glittery gold and opt for a more muted color like champagne. Not only is it elegant, but it will complement your New Year’s look without taking too much attention away from the main attraction - your outfit. Glowy and Dewy Makeup There’s no need to look like a glitter bomb exploded on your face just because it’s New Year’s Eve. Go for a shimmery eye shadow on the lids and highlighter to accentuate your cheekbones, nose and upper lip. To pull the look together, use a dewy finish makeup setting spray to leave skin glowing. Blood Red Accents Red is the most underrated color during the New Year’s season. Don’t be afraid to add a little color into your outfit - a simple red dress or blouse paired with a soft gold heel or bootie is sure to turn more than a couple of heads. Aside from that, there is an old wives tale that claims wearing red into the new year increases your chances of having a prosperous year, filled with love and passion - who doesn’t want that?

Luckily, there are shaving cream substitutes that do not come in an aerosol can and are most likely already in your home. Coconut oil is a good place to start. Nowadays it seems that almost everybody has a

Unlike women who are blessed with concealer and mascara, men have a harder time hiding fatigue. So if you’ve been lacking on the sleep game lately, here are a few tricks for looking more rejuvenated. First things first, focus on staying hydrated. Staying hydrated is a simple health and beauty hack that many people forget about. So next time you get a bad night of sleep, drink a glass of water before you drown yourself in coffee. Aloe vera is another natural remedy that has multiple health and beauty benefits. The best form of aloe vera gel is from the plant itself. Take the natural

gel from the plant and apply under your eyes for ten minutes before rinsing off. You can even apply the gel before bed as part of your regular skin care regimen for an array of benefits, including anti aging properties. Chilled tea bags are a great hack for fast relief. All you need to do is dip two tea bags (preferably herbal tea) in cold water and place them in the fridge for a bit. Once they feel nice and cool, lay down and place them over your eyes for 25-30 minutes. You’ll instantly feel and look more rejuvenated.

handy dandy jar of coconut oil in their home, and for good reason. The popular elixir will give you a smooth shave that’ll leave your skin hydrated all day. If you don’t have coconut oil, baby oil and olive oil are alternatives that have similar benefits. Shea butter is another wonderful substitute that you can use due to its moisturizing properties. If you’re looking for something a bit more simple, body soap or conditioner will work like a charm!

To Beard, or Not to Beard

By Sara Cody

Beards. The one concrete common ground between men and women is their admiration for beards. You either have one or you don’t, but you never dislike them. Mustaches and Goatees don’t receive the same level of respect, and I’m not sure they ever will. With most trends, they come with an expiration date. They burst into the beauty scene and then quickly fizzle out as if they never even existed in the first place. Beards were a more gradual, naturally occurring trend. It seems like we should contemplate whether beards are even a trend at all. They might just be a blessing to the world of men’s grooming. And if they are a blessing, then to whom? From the looks of it, everybody loves beards, and I don’t think that love is going to fade anytime soon. Beards might just be the trend with no expiration date. Beards might just be here to stay...and I don’t think anybody is mad about that.

ORLANDO’S BEST MEN & WOMEN OF THE YEAR

Jenn Carlisle Broker Associate / Weichert, Realtors Jenn Carlisle began selling real estate in the Orlando market in 2006 and quickly rose to the top 2% of all Orlando Realtors. She is a Top Ten Volume Producer in the state of Florida and a Top 100 Volume Producer in the nation for her company Weichert, Realtors. As a former high school teacher, she knows the value of education and holds many designations and certifications, including the prestigious Graduate, Realtor Institute (GRI) and the Certified Residential Specialist (CRS), which is held by fewer than 2% of Realtors nationwide. She is also Relocation Certified, an Accredited Buyers Representative, a Certified Short Sale Professional and holds her Broker’s License. Coming into the industry as the market was taking a downturn, Jenn wasn’t afforded the luxury of having business handed to her and accepted the challenge of a difficult business environment. She grew her business through hosting open houses, knocking on doors and developing lasting relationships with her clients. But don’t take our word for how wonderful she is, here’s what others have said about her: “Jenn is amazing! Being first time home buyers, she helped us with every step along the way and answered every silly question we had! She was available by text, phone, and email quicker than I would expect. We appreciated everything she did for us from beginning to end.” ~ Cassie and Alex S. “Jenn was the listing agent for a property I was interested in back in 2015. My credit wasn’t high enough to purchase anything at that time, but over the years Jenn kept in touch with me. She regularly sent me listings in my area via email. By summer 2017 I was back on my feet financially and Jenn set me up with several viewings. Even with the hurricane bearing down on us right in the middle of the contract phase, Jenn kept her cool and a month later I own a home! I’d recommend Jenn to anyone searching for an experienced and savvy realtor!” ~ Mark A. “Jenn helped me sell my first house. I did not know what to expect of this process as I had never been through it before, but she helped make every step of the way much easier with thorough communication and patience. From her presentation of what selling my house would look like through her company to actual listing and professional photographs to scheduling showings to contracts/inspection/ appraisal and finally to closing, she was always there in a very organized manner. She goes above and beyond requirements to make sure everyone is happy and does whatever she can to make a sale work out for the seller.” ~ Stephanie S. If you’re looking for a Realtor who goes beyond your expectations and treats you as family, then Jenn Carlisle is the optimal choice. She wakes up each morning focused on helping you achieve your real estate goals and works tirelessly to help you accomplish them.

ORLANDO’S BEST MEN & WOMEN OF THE YEAR

Dr. Michael M. Gutierrez Mid Florida Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, & Allergy By any standard, Dr. Michael M. Gutierrez is an outstanding example of what an individual can achieve with the right amount of passion and dedication. His list of accolades is long—and marked by over 30 years of leadership and innovation in the Orlando area. Yet, despite a long history of professional achievement, his contributions to the community extend far beyond the confines of business. Having emigrated from Cuba at a young age, Gutierrez and his family quickly set roots in the southeastern corner of the United States. It’s here where his studies in Dermatology began, and where he eventually founded Mid Florida Dermatology, Plastic Surgery, & Allergy. As CEO of the company, Gutierrez has overseen the growth of the business from a small, locally based medical practice to one the largest single-owner medical corporations in the country. From here, Gutierrez set his roots even deeper, serving as Chairman of the Dermatology Department at Florida Hospital, an Associate Professor at FSU and a member of the teaching faculty at UCF. Central Florida has become a true home for Dr. Gutierrez in so many ways. As patients become friends and students become colleagues, his ties with the community continue to flourish. It’s been his pride to share his passion for health with the Orlando area, and foster a sense of fellowship within the local medical community. He’s raised three incredible children in Central Florida, and currently lives in downtown Orlando where he and his loving wife are raising their two boys. His home life is filled with beach days and family outings, road trips with their three dogs and enjoying all the Sunshine State has to offer. Life in Orlando inspires him to expand his legacy for health and wellness in the area. From developing a non-carcinogenic, reef-friendly mineral sunblock to developing a first of its kind, Asthma, Allergy, & Atopic Dermatitis Center for children, Dr. Gutierrez never seems to tire of seeking out new ways to enrich his community. Dr. Gutierrez would like to sincerely thank Orlando Style magazine for the honor of being named this year’s Man of the Year, and express his gratitude for finding such an incredible sense of home in Central Florida.

Edgar D. Lozada Jr. Equity Prime Mortgage Edgar D. Lozada Jr. bought his first home at the age of 19 and had acquired 14 properties by the age of 23. Since then, he says he has “loved every minute of his journey in the residential mortgage business.” Today, Edgar Lozada is the Vice President of Equity Prime Mortgage Florida, an Atlantabased company with a large presence in Central Florida. Equity Prime Mortgage is a direct Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac & Ginnie Mae seller/servicer that offers just about every loan product available on the market, giving clients the most options from which to choose. The company specializes in early or on-time loan closings every time and excellent communication with all parties throughout the process. Every company practice stems from a belief in “makesense” lending, Edgar says. “Our ability to close common sense loans and make exceptions when necessary is just another thing we do that sets us apart from the competition,” he says. With more than 20 years of experience in the industry in Central Florida, Edgar has had his own successes since joining the company in 2011. For seven consecutive years he has continued to be a top ranking office and his office is projected to exceed $130 million in loan volume for 2019. “I always make myself available to my clients and referral partners,

and I thoroughly explain and set proper expectations on every transaction,” Edgar says. “This creates a great overall experience for the client, every time. It’s not just about the figures making good sense; it’s about complete client satisfaction throughout the process.” Edgar began working as a loan officer in 2002 because of his love for financing and numbers. But his choice to work in the residential mortgage industry began with his passion for buying and managing real estate. He understood early the value of obtaining properties at a low price and the potential income that could be gained from each one. “I always knew if you were going to put your money somewhere, investing in a home was the best way to do it,” he said. And he has put that belief into practice himself. That knowledge and his own experiences grew into a desire to help people make their dreams of home ownership a reality. “I work with a full range of borrowers, but I especially enjoy working with first-time homebuyers,” Edgar said. “Purchasing a home is very exciting, but it can also be stressful so I strive to make sure my clients are comfortable with their new home purchase and fully understand the entire process. My goal is to help them get the results they want and have the best experience doing it.”

ORLANDO’S BEST MEN & WOMEN OF THE YEAR

Kathleen Pugh-Janes - Salon Muse her life back. Once she was able to regain normal functioning, she was ready to meet her son for the first time and grateful that she was alive and could breathe and swallow. The little things were all that mattered, and from that moment on, she vowed to appreciate every moment she was alive.

Kathleen Pugh-Janes knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue a career in the beauty industry. Upon her birth in Detroit, Kathleen was placed for adoption, and the years that followed proved challenging to Kathleen as she struggled to find her place in the world. Most of her peers could not relate to her edgy sense of style, but Kathleen was not willing to sacrifice who she was to fit the mold of what others expected her to be. She left home at age 14 – a punk rock girl with a shaved head – to pursue her dreams on her own terms. Over the next decade or so, Kathleen discovered more about herself through many trials and tribulations. In 2002, Kathleen became pregnant with her son. In her third trimester, she went to the ER for what she thought was an asthma attack but turned out to be pneumonia. While waiting for the OB/GYN, her oxygen level dropped dangerously low, and she had to be intubated. Once the doctor arrived, he performed an emergency C-section for a premature delivery of her baby boy. Kathleen’s pneumonia developed into a rare lung disease, ARDS, putting her in a coma, and she clinically died three times while on life support. When she awoke, she had to learn to walk, talk, and eat again – all things that most of us take for granted. In addition, she had gained weight from the steroids used to treat her pneumonia. She became unrecognizable to herself – she wondered how she would be able to get

client is personal and intimate – they talk about real things that matter. Kathleen prides herself in making sure her clients feel good about themselves and comfortable sharing things with her about their lives. When Kathleen received the call from Orlando magazine with news that she received Best Salon and Woman of the Year awards, she felt uncomfortable at first. She does not want praise for her accomplishments, nor does she believe that she deserves special recognition for overcoming obstacles. Kathleen wants to use her story as a platform to connect with others and show them that they are worthy of pursuing their dreams, whatever they may be. She believes that salon owners and stylists can work together to reshape the beauty industry and encourage one another to be true to themselves and kind to others.

For the first few years after leaving the hospital, Kathleen struggled with PTSD – afraid she would get sick again and die, leaving her son motherless. She rarely left the house due anxiety combined with insecurity about the weight she gained. After some soulsearching, she was able to make peace with how she looked and regain her self-confidence. She realized that people, including other salon owners, that used to judge and criticize her behind her back were only trying to make themselves look better and had nothing to do with her or who she was. What used to hurt her feelings now motivated her to return to the beauty industry and change the way true beauty is conveyed and perceived – from being about the way a person looks to be about the way a person feels about themselves. Kathleen believes that salon owners and stylists have the opportunity to change lives at an organic level and that it is their duty and privilege to make clients feel beautiful from the inside out. Kathleen’s passion is to help people look and feel their absolute best.

Cultivating relationships with people is the most important thing in life. Things come and go, but relationships are lasting. Kathleen has stated that she will never be friends with someone because of what they have or their status in the community – a person could be a billionaire today, lose it all tomorrow, and the only thing remaining is their relationships. Kathleen also believes that learning to accepting of others and judgment-free is the key to having genuine, lasting relationships. The things that happen to people do not make them who they are, and you never know what someone has been through or how you would have handled the situation differently. Overcoming adversity creates empathy towards others, and empathy is what the beauty industry is lacking. Outward beauty without inner substance can create a false sense of security and an unrealistic sense of ego. The beauty industry needs a facelift – and it is Kathleen’s mission to create a concept of beauty that is relatable to all who step through the doors of her salon.

With the goal of doing her part to change the face of the beauty industry, Kathleen opened a high-end salon seven years ago in Winter Park, FL called Salon Muse. She believes that beauty is not only about outward appearance, nor does it come in a box. It comes in all different sizes, shapes, and colors. The beauty industry is not only about hair and makeup – it is about touching lives and hearts. The conversation between a stylist and

As an avid traveler, she has had the opportunity to see the world and connect with people from many different cultures. Those differences ultimately have led her to one conclusion: we are more alike than we are different. “I was brought up in a very tightknit Greek family. We believe in treating people like they are family,” says Mary. “Life is a lot happier when you act with compassion.” Mary’s love for helping others fuels all her life’s pursuits. She values the time she spends helping others in and outside of work. One of her favorite charities is The Sharing Center in Longwood which provides essential resources to those most in need. The Oasis at the Sharing Center is a homeless hospitality walk-in center where the needy have access to basic services that many of us take for granted such as showers, toiletries, laundry, and computer access. They also have a food pantry and thrift outreach program. On a larger scale, Mary also loves The Nature Conservancy which is one of the most effective and efficient environmental organizations in the world. Mary supports these charities because they are closely tied to her own life mission: “Empowering others through a more satisfying and long-term solution…Empowering others to take charge of their own lives again.”

Chef Vincenzo Navarra Vincenzo Cucina Italiana

What’s your morning routine? Every morning is different for me, but I have to say one thing that stays the same is my morning routine, with my family. I hang out with my children, then I go to the gym, go back home get ready and the restaurant life begins . Regardless of what the day consists of, I know that will always be something that was not on my schedule to deal with. But this is the restaurant business. What inspired you to be a chef? I was born into it. My parents had a mom and pop when I was born. In fact, this led to be my first job working in the kitchen with my Dad. So, I guess you could say my Father and Mother inspired me. Who’s your mentor? My father – Shadowing him in his little kitchen since I was 10 years old instilled in me the love for food, eventually leading my entering the culinary arts. But I never stop looking to stay up with the times. Since my family is all Italian, the conversations are always about the latest trend or who makes a dish this way or that way. Describe your formal training. It would be, old school. Although I went to culinary school, I pretty much learned all the essentials from my father. All my training has been hands on since a very young age, and most of my knowledge is by experience in the kitchen.

What has been the best day in the kitchen? My best day of course was the opening of Vincenzo Cucina Italiana in 2014. Since then, every day is great day for me. Every day I am focused to improve and create to bring Vincenzo Cucina Italiana to the highest level that it can be. We have been getting recognized by the Sentinel voters several years so basically, I know that I am doing something right. I would like to add that I am grateful to our guests for appreciating what I do, and to continue to patronize my restaurant. How do you end your day? With my family. My wife waits up for me and we have a little alone time and if I am not too tired watch our favorite shows. You have already two locations in Orlando, do you have any other plans for the future? Never stop growing! We have Ciao Italia Ristorante on Westwood Blvd since 1991. It’s the landmark of International dr. My father is still hand on in the kitchen with my brother and sister managing. My goal is to eventually open more restaurants. Currently, I want to enjoy my children since they are very young but, in few years, who knows! What advice would you give to aspiring chefs? Stay true to good food, it will never go out of style. Be humble and take the business serious. Its hard work but it will give back.

CELEBRITY SOUP

A LOOK BACK at 2019

Style Magazines is looking back at the biggest stories from the last year! By Riesa Pascal

When it comes to world news and celebrity gossip, 2019 has been a roller coaster from start to finish! I think it’s safe to say that next year will be much more of the same and you’ll be able to read all about it right here in Celebrity Soup, but before the 2020 ball drops, let’s reminisce on the past year and look back at some of the breaking stories and headlines that made us shake our heads in shock and awe.

1. Operation Varsity Blues In March 2019, a scandal arose over a conspiracy to influence undergraduate admissions decisions at several top American universities. The investigation, nicknamed Operation Varsity Blues, saw thirty-three parents accused of paying more than $25 million to scheme organizer William Rick Singer. Celebrities caught up in the scandal included Desperate Housewives alum Felicity Huffman who paid $15,000 to have a proctor correct her daughter’s test answers and Full House actress Lori Loughlin who paid $500,000 to get her two daughters falsely designated as crew team recruits for the University of Southern California. Huffman plead guilty and served 10 days in prison while Loughlin and her husband, designer Mossimo Giannulli, have plead not guilty and are awaiting trial.

2. Archie Harrison MountbattenWindsor Is Born 2019 was an exciting year for Britain’s royal family as they got to welcome their latest member into the world! The Queen’s great-grandson was born to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on May 6th and is seventh in the line of succession to the British throne. Several landmarks were illuminated in different colors to mark the birth, including Niagara Falls, the CN Tower and the London Eye. As Prince Harry is not the eldest son of Prince Charles, Archie is neither a British Prince nor does he have the style “Royal Highness”. Though his parents had the option of using a subsidiary royal title, they have declared instead that he will be known simply as Master Archie Mountbatten-Windsor in accordance with their wish that he grow up as a private citizen.

3. Jussie Smollet’s Hate Crime Claim In January, Empire actor Jussie Smollett claimed he was the victim of a hate crime when he was attacked by two men on a Chicago street in the middle of the night. Police developed suspicions about Jussie’s story after launching an investigation and on February 21st, Jussie was arrested for allegedly staging the attack against himself with the help of two men whom he paid. Fortunately for Jussie who was facing 16 felonies, the criminal case against him was dropped by prosecutors on March 26th. The highly controversial decision was slammed by both the police superintendent and Chicago’s mayor who hinted at corruption in the State’s Attorney’s Office. Despite his lucky break, the fallout drastically affected Jussie’s career with Empire creator Lee Daniels announcing that

CELEBRITY SOUP

Jussie would not be returning to the FOX show for its final season. 4. Fire Breaks Out at Notre-Dame Cathedral On April 15th, the world watched in horror as a fire engulfed the 850-year-old cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris, France. Flames leapt out from two of its bell towers minutes before the spire collapsed, and later spread to one of the cathedral’s iconic rectangular towers. More than 400 firefighters fought the tragic blaze that burned for roughly nine hours. The intensity of the fire caused extensive damage to the beloved structure, though the archbishop of Paris confirmed the fire had spared the three 13th-century stainedglass masterpieces. The iconic rose windows are among Notre Dame’s most recognizable features and as news of the windows’ survival spread, people worldwide voiced their relief at what they described as a “miracle.” It is not yet known what caused the fire, though officials suggested it may have been ignited by ongoing renovation work at the gothic landmark. 5. ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Reaches $2B Mark To say Avengers: Endgame was widely anticipated would be the understatement of the year! The culmination of the 22-film story was backed with Marvel’s largest marketing campaign which paid off in record-breaking ways. In addition to receiving critical praise for its direction, acting, musical score, action, visual effects, and emotional weight, Avengers: Endgame became the fastest film to cross $2 billion in global collections within just the second weekend of its release. It grossed nearly $2.8 billion worldwide, surpassing Infinity War’s entire theatrical run in just eleven days and breaking numerous box office records to become the highest-grossing film of all time. 6. The Popeyes Chicken Sandwich Really, Riesa?! You’re going to put a chicken sandwich on your list?? Why yes! Yes, I am! In August, Popeyes’ biggest product launch in 30 years hit stores and ignited a social media war that is still going strong. The Popeyes chicken sandwich sold out just two weeks after launch which meant the brand served as many chicken sandwiches in that span as it expected to dole out through the end of September. Ironically, the secret ingredient for Popeyes’ success came from Chick-fil-A’s own success and passionate fanbase.

After the product launch, a Twitter battle erupted between the two with even Wendy’s chiming in. The hilarious fast-food feud resulted in nationwide publicity that saw celebrities trying the sandwich on live television, someone trying to sell one for $7,000 on eBay and even armed people rushing restaurants to demand their own. Sadly one man even lost his life after he allegedly cut in line at the chain and was tragically stabbed to death during a resulting argument outside of the chain. 7. Kim Kardashian Goes to Law School In the spring of 2019, Kim Kardashian West revealed that she was studying to be a lawyer and was nearly a year through a four-year apprenticeship with a San Francisco law firm. Kim already has a standing job offer from famed attorney Robert Shapiro and has been nicknamed “The Princess of Prison Reform” due to her work that helped free 17 inmates in just 90 days. Kim spoke of her decision in an Instagram post writing “For anyone assuming this is the easy way out, it’s not. My weekends are spent away from my kids while I read and study. I work all day, put my kids to bed and spend my nights studying...I changed my number last year and disconnected from everyone because I have made this strict commitment to follow a dream of mine -- It’s never too late to follow your dreams.” 8. Kylie Jenner Becomes the Youngest Self-Made Billionaire It’s safe to say Kylie Jenner had a pretty amazing 2019 after becoming the world’s youngest self-made billionaire...ever! The 21-year-old makeup mogul is America’s only female selfmade billionaire under the age of 40, but with her family’s fame there is still a rabid debate over whether Kylie is “self-made,” as Forbes calls her. By Forbes’ own definition, the term “self-made” describes anyone who did not inherit his or her fortune. The bulk of Kylie’s wealth comes from her three-year-old beauty brand, Kylie Cosmetics, so she fits the bill. The wildly successful company is worth at least $900 million by Forbes’ estimate and Kylie retains 49% ownership. 9. Celebrity Engagements & Weddings To discuss the top celebrity relationships from 2019 would require about a dozen more pages so how about we save us both a little time and just hit the highlights here? Chris Pratt and Katherine

Schwarzenegger tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony. Jennifer Lawrence and art dealer Cooke Maroney said “I do” in a Rhode Island haunted mansion. Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez are headed to the altar after getting engaged in the Bahamas. Orlando Bloom popped the question to Katy Perry with a romantic Valentine’s Day proposal that she couldn’t say “no” to. Nicki Minaj is officially off the market and announced via Twitter that she and Kenneth “Zoo” Petty had gotten married. Heidi Klum tied the knot with her beau Tom Kaulitz just two months after he proposed. After calling her “wife” for years, Dwayne Johnson finally married his longtime love and the mother to two of his children, Lauren Hashian, in Hawaii. 10. Celebrity Breakups & Divorces Alright guys, you know the drill... we can’t discuss the new relationships of 2019 without mentioning the old! Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper both split from their respective partners less than a year after playing on screen lovers in A Star Is Born. The “Queen of Celebrity Gossip”, Wendy Williams filed for divorce against her husband of 22 years, Kevin Hunter, after widely reported claims that he fathered a child with another woman. Khloe Kardashian and Tristan Thompson’s relationship ended after bombshell claims that he made out with Kylie Jenner’s best friend Jordyn Woods. After almost 22 years together, 85-year-old TV legend Larry King and his 7th wife, Shawn Southwick King announced they are divorcing. Katie Holmes pulled the plug on her undercover romance with Jamie Foxx. After 10 years of an on-and-off relationship and less than a year as husband and wife, Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus’ marriage came to an ugly end with Hemsworth citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for their divorce.

IT’S SAFE TO SAY KYLIE JENNER HAD A PRETTY AMAZING 2019 AFTER BECOMING THE WORLD’S YOUNGEST SELF-MADE BILLIONAIRE...EVER!

Outdoor fun and family activities drew thousands of Central Floridians to Lake Eola from November 3rd-4th for Fiesta in the Park! Now in its 46th year of existence, Fiesta in the Park is the largest arts & crafts festival event series in Orlando. While live entertainment at the Walt Disney Amphitheater was a highlight of the free event series, the real stars of the show were the 600+ artists and crafters that came from all over the United States to display and sell their original work. Spanning the entire walkway of Lake Eola, The Fiesta in the Park Series was presented by Your Southern Ford Dealers. In addition to mouth-watering food options and a dedicated Kidszone, the petfriendly fiesta was also the perfect opportunity to obtain one‑of‑a‑kind gifts for the holidays. Following last year’s record-breaking festival, Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) returned to Tinker Field in Downtown Orlando with the best in electronic dance music, full-size carnival rides, performers, and unforgettable art. From November 8th-10th, EDC featured scores of the world’s top dance-music artists alongside plenty of fun-filled festivities on stages that represented a distinct union of technology and nature. From the stage decor and sound to the pyrotechnics and performers, many unique elements go into bringing the world of EDC to life and the 2019 show was no different. This year’s expanded festival footprint allowed for larger stages in addition to an all-new fourth stage for the first time in the event’s history. Now in its thirty-third year, The Festival of Trees transformed the Orlando Museum of Art into a glittering wonderland filled with sparkling trees, vignettes, and stunning décor for visitors of all ages. From November 15th-24th, the museum showcased designer Christmas trees of all sizes, holiday vignettes, custom hand designed wreaths and table décor, a gingerbread village, tabletop displays and much more. Made possible by Council of 101 and designed to the theme “Merry and Bright”, each of the designer trees showcased the stylings of Orlando’s finest artists. The start of the 9-day event was marked with a

glamorous gala and the festival fun continued with daily musical performances, familyfriendly entertainment and delightful programs for all ages throughout the week. Each piece was available for purchase with all proceeds benefiting the Orlando Museum of Art. On November 16th, more than 3,000 beer lovers came together to experience unlimited tastings of over 200 craft and premium beers from local breweries and around the world at the 5th Annual Orlando Beer Festival. Located in Festival Park, attendees of the festival also enjoyed a wine tasting experience, beer pairing demonstrations, a complementary photobooth, tasty eats from the Food Truck Court and live music to keep the party going all afternoon! The Orlando Beer Festival also featured a GameZone with interactive inflatables and college football games shown on the big screen. VIP ticket-holders enjoyed a wide range of added benefits including early entry to beer tastings, 2019 commemorative souvenirs, a Cocktail Zone, exclusive samples of Orange Avenue Creamsicle IPA, shaded private areas, exclusive food samplings and much more. Proceeds from the event benefited the Central Florida Brewer’s Guild. On November 16th, Orlando’s Eve took over the historic streets of Downtown Orlando for an immersive adventure highlighted by an interactive theater experience. Directed by Tim Williams of Orlando Shakes, the evening began at the Orange County Regional History Center where attendees picked up maps that guided them to the fun evening ahead! After having visited all of the locations on their map, attendees had all the clues needed to make their way to the closing Roaring 20’s Party. Attendees had an absolute blast at the speakeasy-style private event featuring secret password entry, music from the roaring 20’s, flappers dancing, and drinks flowing. A portion of the event proceeds benefited the Avrio Foundation, a nonprofit inspired by Downtown Orlando Partnership. Taking place Thanksgiving weekend and inviting attendees to discover the world around them, FusionFest 2019 is one of Downtown Orlando’s most unique cultural celebrations. In addition to a cornucopia of dishes from around the world, the two-day event featured interactive experiences and contests celebrating fashion, music, dance, short films and more, all designed to honor each person’s heritage while exploring how we influence each other and create our own unique identity. Representing 160 different heritages, FusionFest 2019 was free to attend with food, beverages and merchandise all available for purchase as attendees celebrated diversity, inclusion and collaboration in Central Florida.

A Decade of Food & Fun Orlando celebrates the 2019 Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic By Riesa Pascal

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

DINING ‘N STYLE

With 18 restaurants and lounges and a distinguished culinary and beverage team, the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort continually earns national recognition for its food and beverage program. Located in the heart of Walt Disney World, the hotel boasts more than 70 certified wine sommeliers and 1,400 wine selections. In 2010, the resort launched the Food & Wine Classic as a way to celebrate and share their team’s passion and expertise of the culinary arts with guests. A beloved tradition now 10 years in the making, the 2019 Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic returned November 8th-9th to celebrate a decade of food and fun with visitors from around the world. The street party festival featured unlimited food tastings at dozens of stations and wine from around the world amidst a festive backdrop of live entertainment on the hotel’s scenic causeway. The exponential growth of the Classic over the past 10 years is a testament to its immense success and if you don’t believe me, just take a look at the numbers! Since their inaugural event in 2010, attendance has increased by more than 315% and this year’s festivities featured more food and beverage options than ever before. Spanning 75,000 feet (5x larger than the 15,000 feet of space at the inaugural Classic), the 2019 event boasted 97 culinary selections from the hotel’s award-winning

restaurants and over 170 beverage offerings from more than 60 wineries. Of course the highlight of the event was the mouthwatering menu featuring recurring festival favorites alongside plenty of delightfully new dishes. Just a few notable new dishes on the 2019 menu included Pan-seared rockfish from Todd English’s Bluezoo, Vegan pho from Fresh Mediterranean Market, Organic Kabocha Squash Ravioli from Il Mulino, Barbacoa beef taco from Picabu, Seared Salmon from Garden Grove, a vegetarian rice bowl from Cabana Bar and Beach Club, and much more. Returning favorites included Oven-roasted Angus Beef Tenderloin from Shula’s Steakhouse, Dynamite Rock Shrimp from Todd English’s bluezoo, Kimonos and Dragon Sushi Roll from Kimonos, Funfetti fried Oreo cookie at Carnival Corner, Traditional Earth baked kalua pork at The Pig & The Poke, and Yu Chen’s crispy duck at Chinatown just to name a few. To celebrate its milestone 10th year, the Classic even amped up the party with the debut of a surf party-themed area called Hang 10. Taking up residence on the resort’s white sand beach, Hang 10 immersed guests in a surfthemed beach party with a live band, decorations, refreshing beverage selections and two new dishes from the hotel’s awardwinning food and beverage team including a Fry Basket featuring

clams, shrimp, oysters and fries seasoned with malt vinegar and served with lemon and traditional tartar sauce. Not to be outdoone, Hang 10’s Hearts of Palm Ceviche was also a hit with thinly sliced fresh hearts of palm, lime juice, Bermuda onion, bell pepper and chili peppers. In addition to the festival’s other themed areas, the event also featured hands-on seminars with the hotel’s chefs and certified beverage experts. My companion and I thoroughly enjoyed expanding our knowledge of wine at the popular Italian Wines seminar. Our certified sommelier Kristian Laplante had the room in stitches as he shared his passion for wine and took us on a journey through the three main wine regions of Italy. The class showcased both the passion Italians have for their wine and how they are influenced by their food. With Kristian’s guidance, we experienced the history of the wines and how they have evolved to the modern palate without compromising their Italian traditions. In addition to learning how to choose the perfect bottle for the perfect occasion, we also learned how to perfectly pair the right beverage with our meal. It was just one of many magical moments we experienced in the midst of the Classic festivities.
