> Holiday season is no longer “just around the corner” it’s here. With the seemingly non-ending volatility in world markets presenting almost daily stiff challenges to prosperity, the joy of giving has become more meaningful than ever before. With this in mind it’s time to get out there without delay and select the gifts for those special in your life. In today’s world, markets abound with unbelievable bargains being offered in our great specialty shops as well as in the malls so take advantage of the ‘deals’ by doing your part in supporting our local merchants by patronizing their businesses. Our ‘Holiday Gift Guide’ will give you some great ideas of what’s hot and desirable this year but the greatest gift of all is the act of giving itself. If he nourishes an atavistic passion for Greece, the ground of his ancestors, it’s in Paris that he has found his home port. As a photographer, he continues his dream of perfection because, according to him, “the photograph is a kind of plastic surgery which is able to modulate a face ad infinitum!” His vision of beauty is fragile, transitory, a little kitsch and inevitably fatal.

> Where were you in the 1960s? If you can even remember that far back perhaps you weren’t as heavily influenced by the psychedelic drug movement. It is a decade rich in history and cultural developments (not the least of which was the rising popularity of the bikini), and it was the theme of the 12th Annual Famous Faces Masquerade Ball. It was held on October 22nd at the Loews Royal Pacific Resort. As soon as guests pulled up to the valet they were greeted by attendants dressed as Che Guevara. Just kidding! The attendants greeted them at what looked like an oldfashioned, full service gas station. Can you dig it? It really set the tone for a groovy night of vintage cars, doo-wop music and

bell-bottom jeans. The company Spectacular Themes went far out, man, creating a Mel’s Diner and even simulating a drive-in theater using props and vintage cars in front of a large screen that showed American Graffiti. The peace, love and unity could be seen in the serious bread that was made that night, we’re talking roughly $175,000 raised for Shepherd’s Hope. The foundation has nine health centers around Central Florida where doctors and nurses volunteer their time and provide free health care to lowincome, uninsured families. The night was a gas! Speaking of gas, you know how men can never figure out why a woman would want

City News

to walk by the Louis Vuitton storefront just to stare at the $9,000 purse she can’t afford? Well, on November 6th the 10th annual Winter Park Concours d’Elegance put it all into perspective for them. Six blocks of Park Avenue were shut down for this highly regarded car show and more than 60,000 people came out to bask in the subtle elegance of exotic automobiles. Ha-ha, just kidding about the subtlety. There was nothing subtle about the in-your-face luxury that emanated from every one of those rare cars. It was almost as thick as the testosterone from all the men who came out to look - but not touch - and dream about how they would look riding one. It was like the strip club of car shows, only in this case the older the better. One of the reasons this event draws automobile collectors and enthusiasts from all over the country every year is because of the nationally recognized and ranked judges who are considered car connoisseurs, if you will. They drink in the car with their eyes and carefully swish it around their cranial taste buds. The prize isn’t just bragging rights (when you drive a car like these you don’t really need any), the winners add monetary value to their car if they should have a momentary lapse in sanity and decide to sell it. The pre-party for Concours d’Elegance was held the night before at the Sanford International Airport. Inside three airport hangers the DuPont Registry Live Aeroport Reception showcased some of the world’s most rare and exotic boats, planes and automobiles. It made you wonder if the people who own these make snow angels in piles of $100 bills. Even something as simple as ordering a drink came with over-the-top fanfare in the form of aerial bartenders from Cirque USA. Just how much do you tip a bartender who demonstrates such uncanny flexibility and coordination without spilling a drop? The night was a huge success with all proceeds going toward the Seminole Kids House.

From luxury cars to luxury living. The weekend of the 5th is also when the VUE at Lake Eola took things to a new level; the penthouse level, to be exact. The 1st annual Level Designer Showcase benefiting the Hope and Help Foundation made everyone realize, myself included, just how plainly their own homes were decorated. In this parade of penthouses local interior designers turned a few condos into something worthy of an episode of “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous.” One bathroom actually had an infinity-edge tub where the water fell from a hole in the ceiling. The size of the closets alone would put a studio apartment to shame. The paintings on the walls were worth a lot more than just a thousand words and they were all unique works of art done by well-known artists. The work of Orlando Style’s own Sven Bode graces several walls in these luxury condos. A portion of the money raised from the paintings also went to the Hope and Help Foundation. Cristian Michaels, creator and the driving force behind Premier Property Group, said it was a chance for people to see what sets the VUE apart from other downtown condos. The VUE at Lake Eola also played host to the 2nd Annual Heart to Heart Gala on November 6th. It was probably one of the most expensive meals Brio Tuscan Grille ever served but it tasted all the more sweeter because the money raised will help provide services for the Health Care Center for the Homeless. A Holland American Line cruise for two and an iPad2 were among the door prizes, and Paradise Band provided the entertainment. More than $50,000 was raised, highlighting yet again the amazing partnership between the Femmes de Coeur and the Health Care Center for the Homeless.

skaters on the outdoor ice skating rink as the switch was flipped on the holiday lights that adorn the campus of University of Central Florida. From now until the New Year the campus will host holiday movies under the stars and free nightly light shows. November 12th went to the dogs at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel where the 15th annual Tales and Tails Gala was held. In between sipping on fine wine and dining from a five-star menu guests learned you actually can teach an old dog new tricks. The gala benefits Canine Companions for Independence, an organization that pioneered the concept of training dogs to assist people with disabilities. One of the silent auction items was a dog collar autographed by Leslie Nielsen. I’m serious. And for those who didn’t get enough of the high-octane, testosterone-driven thrills of the Concours d’Elegance… there was the Festival of Speed on the 13th. Once again luxury cars and boats were put on display at the Ritz Carlton Orlando Grande Lakes proving that even though money doesn’t buy happiness it looks like it comes close. I’ve never seen anyone frown in a Ferrari. And the money raised will also put smiles on the faces of children at Arnold Palmer Hospital. Get on the LIST!

> As we drove down the narrow twolane road through a rural town 30 minutes outside of San Jose, Costa Rica our tour guide, Jorge, turned around in the passenger seat and filled us in on a few basic facts about his country. “The main religion here is soccer,” he joked. “Which is also the second most popular sport in Costa Rica.” “Wait,” someone inevitably asked, “what’s the first?” “The most popular sport is high-ball!” Jorge zinged and chuckled at his own joke. He’s probably told that line hundreds of times to thousands of different tourists, but for Jorge the joke never got old and neither did his job. He was a tour guide with Swiss Travel, a company that works with Marriott hotels to help tourists book excursions, and more importantly, provides the transportation. Trust me, while this small Central American country is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, you will enjoy it much more from the back seat of a tour van so you can ignore the disconcerting game of “chicken” drivers

play on the winding canyon roads as they pass each other. Jorge and the driver had just picked us up from the airport. It was a short three-hour flight from Orlando. Less than three years ago a flight from Orlando to Costa Rica would’ve been an expensive all-day affair with several layovers (and I imagine a few headaches), but in 2009 Jetblue thought of something that was so extraordinarily out of the box that it had not occurred to any other airline: daily direct flights from MCO to SJO. It was like opening the gates of Disneyworld to Central Florida surfers, fishermen and honeymooners who could now trade Disney’s river rafting ride for the real thing (the flight to Costa Rica is about as long as the wait in line anyway). It made for some obnoxiously cool Facebook status updates: “Hope everyone has a great weekend, I’ll be in Costa Rica if you want to do happy hour! LOL.” If river rafting is ironically on your list of things to do before you die I suggest checking the grade of difficulty before choosing a river, with Grade 1 being “scary” and Grade 6 being “scary.” Since we were

Travel ‘N Style

beginners we decided to try the Pacuare River. It was scary. I later learned it was a Grade 4 labeled “Not for Beginners.” It turned out to be one of the most thrilling adventures of my life! This is why Costa Rica has basically become the Mickey Mouse of eco-tourism. You can hike active volcanoes, zip-line hundreds of feet above a rain forest (“On the tram ride up you’re the only animal in a cage,” says Jorge), and tour the Manuel Antonio National Park, named one of the 12 most dazzling national parks in the world by Forbes Magazine. This has brought about a treasure trove of tourists, making Costa Rica a coveted place for hotel chains like the Marriott. The company zeroed in on four choice spots throughout the country and built hotels that have basically re-defined the Marriott brand. Perhaps the most unique of the four is the Los Suenos Marriott, a luxury resort nestled in the coastal town of Herradura. It’s a 90-minute drive from the San Jose Airport. The town is mostly a farmland of palm olive trees, coffee bean bushes and pineapple plants dotted with clusters of one-room shanties. It is where the locals live and work and you can stop by the fruit stand or market, giving you a true taste of rural Costa Rica before passing through the Spanish colonial style gates that mark the entrance of Los Suenos. It’s obvious Marriott worked hard to match Mother Nature’s luxury with its own. The Resort is set on 1,100 acres of emerald landscape overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It’s so lush you’re tempted to make a snow angel in the foliage. It’s one of the few places in the world where you can actually golf in a rainforest. I hear it’s quite calming. Even if your game is a series of whiffs and slices it’s hard to keep scowling when an adorable white-faced monkey scampers up the course (scowling is also discouraged because you really don’t want the monkey to think you’re challenging his dominance). But if you’d rather enjoy the rainforest from an indoor temperature-controlled spa room you can do that, too. Los Suenos is home to the Sibo Rainforest Spa, a worldclass retreat that gives you the blissful feel of a jungle - with cocoon-shaped lights, bamboo décor, organic skin care products from Hungary, and even a 13-head shower

(in case you‘ve ever wondered what it was like to stand naked in the rain?). With six high-end restaurants and lounges on site this is a resort that definitely caters to the couple’s retreat or even the family getaway. The fact that almost everyone speaks both Spanish and English makes you feel all the guiltier for not taking the time to learn another language. If you‘re looking to change up the scenery, the lure of urban living and late-night partying can be found in the capitol of San Jose. The Escazu area is working it’s way up to South Beach status with its unique restaurants and chic bars, only here the drinks don’t cost $20 and the servers don’t sneer at you with contempt. It is, in fact, a very friendly place, and at the heart of it is a Courtyard Marriott and a Residence Inn. One appeals to those on a budget, the latter to the extended-stay traveler. They’ve both strayed from the generic hotel design and have opted for a trendier look. Just 20 minutes away on a coffee plantation nestled in the bustling neighborhood of Heredia, the Costa Rica Marriott offers more of a 16th century hacienda feel and, like Los Suenos, is home to a world-class spa. The Kuo spa experience is described as more of a wellness journey. Costa Rica has somehow managed to maintain its natural wonder in a world where tourists don’t want to stray too far from the 21st century (what’s the point of a experiencing the ruggedness of a rainforest if I can’t tweet while I’m doing it?). It’s easy to see why the New Economics Foundation dubbed it The Happiest Country in the World (just don’t tell Disney that).

::

If you’re planning to visit Costa Rica keep in mind the time of year:

You’ll find the best rates on hotels, flights and excursions during September and October but that’s because it’s right in the middle of “green season” (translation: rainy reason) that runs from late April through November. Tourism in Costa Rica is slow during this time, which will give your vacation a more intimate feel (though it may also be a bit more soggy). You won’t have to jostle with hundreds of other tourists as you hike a volcano, nor will you have to wait in long lines for a zip-line experience, but you better pack a poncho. The waterfalls are also stunning through this season and fishing on the Pacific side of the country is best. The busiest time of year is December through May (especially Christmas and spring break). These are the summer months in Costa Rica. This is when the weather is hot and dry, and - having just gone through five months of rain the landscape is the greenest, most vibrant you will see. December and January are perhaps the best time of year for ecotourism; the rivers are ripe for rafting, the ocean is great for surfing, and the fish practically jump into your boat on the Caribbean side of the country. But everything is more expensive and you better book your trip six months in advance. Did I mention the crowds? If you ask the locals they’ll say June is probably the best time to go. You’ll miss the big tourist crowds but it’s still dry enough to enjoy. However, coming off the summer season the scenery isn’t as lush and the rivers and waterfalls aren’t as full. <

Ahhhh Aruba! By: Jennifer Marcus Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Travel ‘N Style

> A vacation is just what we all need. Some time to vacate from everyday life and connect with yourself and slow down. Stressful situations, business meetings, running a household, and work all take a toll on our day-to-day lives. But even planning the vacation can be exhausting from deciding what type of vacation you want and then choosing where to go. If your idea of a vay-kay is on a beach somewhere in the Caribbean, then Aruba should be on your itinerary. Once you are lying on a lounge chair sipping a piña colada, you’ll know you are right where you ought to be. Aruba is known for its nearly perfect climate. The average temperature lies between 86 and 91 throughout the year and because it lies right beyond the hurricane band, it rarely gets big storms. And if it does ever rain, it is usually never more than five minutes, which is a definite selling point when booking a trip. While Aruba has many beautiful hotels and resorts, a standout among the lineup is the Aruba Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino. Situated on Palm Beach, this 411room (each with its own private balcony), eight-story complex is host to seven bars and restaurants, a swim up and lobby bar, the Mandara Spa, the Stellaris Casino and several gift shops. There is so much to indulge in you won’t even want to leave the property. But if you do opt to take a look at the island, there are a plethora of activities the island offers including jeep safari tours, horseback riding, sailing trips, and of course, water activities. Looking for an activity at the hotel? Then book a paddleboard yoga class, which is a revolutionary new concept where you practice yoga on a paddleboard on the water and try to remain stable in the most unstable of places. As soon as you walk into the spacious and inviting lobby, you will feel serenity, comfort and definitely think, “Ok…now I am on vacation.” In late 2008, the hotel completed a $50 million renovation of all 411 rooms, which include 23 suites, with state-of-theart features and the latest designs. And while you would be completely satisfied staying in these impressive rooms, you might want to indulge even more and opt to stay in the exclusive Tradewinds Club. This is a hotel within a hotel, providing you with boutique-style luxury. Although it is in

a resort setting, the Tradewinds Club offers five star complimentary food and beverage offerings daily, a 24-hour personal concierge, Tradewinds Lounge access, reserved beach seating and the benefit of sitting on the top floor overlooking the beautiful pool and Caribbean. After enjoying your room and view from your private balcony, you can either enjoy the sun by the free-form pool with cascading waterfalls and swim up bar, or you can head on over to the brand new H2Oasis adults-only pool and recreation area. The $1.2 million project delivered a gorgeous 10,000 square foot adult playground with an impressive fully stocked lounge and plush cabanas. Director of Sales & Marketing for the Aruba Marriot, Anotinette Van Den Berg, states that this is another option from the freeform pool for those “guests seeking a bit of exclusivity and serenity.” Looking to indulge even more? Treat yourself to a luxurious service at the Mandara Spa. The 6,500 square-foot spa includes four VIP treatment rooms for couples and eight individual treatment rooms, along with a steam room, nail and hair salon, and relaxation area. Opt for the full body massage. It is decadent and the perfect detox from everyday life. When you are finished racing around the Caribbean waters on a banana boat or wave runner, have relaxed in the spa and have worked up an appetite, you’ll be able to indulge in some of the islands best restaurants, which happen to be located on property. There is something for everyone at the Aruba Marriott. La Vista Restaurant offers delicious Italian buffet while Ketsu Sushi Bar will satisfy all sushi lovers with a diverse and fresh selection. Looking to spoil yourself? Then book at the famous Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse where quality is never compromised and the food is always sizzling and scintillating. Have a guy in the family who’s bummed about missing the big football game back over in the states? Send him over to Champions Sports Bar & Restaurant where he can catch the game while enjoying a classic American dinner. Ladies (or men) can be satisfied ordering straight from your lounge chair from The Waves Beach Bar & Grill for lunch, and the most romantic and beautiful option is Simply Fish, where the beachfront transforms

into a restaurant allowing you to eat right alongside the water and wiggle your toes in the sand. You’ll also enjoy some of the freshest seafood on the island. If you want to get away for a few hours, then head to the noteworthy restaurant,The Screaming Eagle. While most restaurants have you sitting at a table, this restaurant takes breakfast-in-bed to a whole knew meaning offering full size beds with plush white pillows to lounge in while enjoying your dinner. You might want to wear pants or shorts to this slumber party though. With a satisfied tummy, it’s time to make way to the largest casino in Aruba, the Stellaris Casino, which is located right in the lobby of the Aruba Marriot. The gaming space has everything you’re looking for in a top-notch casino and is even available to rent out for private gaming parties or slot tournaments. Be careful though… it’s open 24 hours so you might not be hitting the hay until the wee hours of the morning. But incase you’re still not tired, head over to Moomba’s beach bar, located walking distance from the resort. It’s a funky island bar right on the water. With the holidays wizzing past us, the combination of a stunning island, glorious warm weather, genuinely sweet locals, and a fantastic resort with all the amenities you could need or want, you might just need to book this vacation to the beautiful island of Aruba sooner than you think. Orlando Now

Holidays In The Sun By: Gary C. Sain President and CEO, Visit Orlando Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Christmas trees light up SeaWorld Orlando

> As I mentioned in the November issue, Orlando’s position as the top U.S. destination for leisure and business travelers certainly comes with its perks. Especially around the holidays. While Central Florida may not have the weather associated with this time of year — meaning super-cold temperatures — we do offer inspired events that are every bit as essential for connecting with family and friends. And every bit a part of this grand tradition. One of the most visually impressive displays, the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios is a sight to behold. We’re talking about millions of sparkling lights perfectly synchronized to holiday music. The lights cover entire build-

ings, and bring Santa and his reindeer to life. On certain nights, if you’re really lucky, you’ll even catch a snowflake. These awe-inspiring lights take place through Jan. 3. Don’t miss out on this truly unique Orlando spectacle. Another seasonal must-see for parents and kids alike is SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration at SeaWorld Orlando through Dec. 31. This sea-meets-Santa celebration features lights, snowfalls, carolers, classical music and a series of special shows. The live events include Shamu’s Christmas Miracles, Winter Wonderland on Ice, The Polar Express Experience, A Sesame Street Christmas and The Sea of Trees. Where else can you experience snow, Santa, Sesame Street and Shamu? Didn’t think so. For a more low-key and relaxing approach — maybe on a Sunday afternoon — check out Leu’s Holiday House at Harry P. Leu Gardens. You’ll find the 19th century Leu House Museum decked out with all of the seasonal trimmings. Each of the rooms has been decorate with its own theme and diorama. Guest can also take a stroll along the garden’s winding paths and though the 50acre park, which includes largest camellia

collection in the eastern United States. The house will only be decorated until Jan. 4; so don’t forget to make plans to visit. On the other side of the Orlando-holiday spectrum is New Year’s Eve 2011 at Universal CityWalk on Dec. 31. Definitely more for adults, this party will help you say “goodbye” to 2011 and “hello” to 2012. There are live performances from national music acts, a massive gourmet buffet, entertainment in seven nightclubs within CityWalk and a midnight Champagne toast. Make it a complete night and book a room at one of the Universal Orlando Resort’s on-site hotels, such as the Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Loews Royal Pacific Resort or the Hard Rock Hotel. Though Orlando may not have sleet and snow — both of which are overrated anyway — we do provide everything else that is needed to enjoy the holidays. So grab your loved ones and spend some time creating new traditions in the Orlando sun. See you in 2012!<

> ‘Gifts From The Heart’

Since the beginning of their relationship in 2005, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, also known as, “Brangelina,” have become one of the World’s most famous celebrity couples. Brad and Angelina first met on the set of the film, Mr. & Mrs. Smith in 2004. After denying multiple rumors of a relationship in 2005, Angelina announced to the public that she was pregnant with Brad’s child in 2006 and the rest “they say” is history. The Jolie-Pitts are famously known for their large family brood, including three adopted children, Maddox Chivan who was born in Cambodia, Zahara Marley adopted from Ethiopia, Pax Thien who is from Vietnam, and three biological children, Shiloh Nouvel, and twins, Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline. Angelina Jolie, who is listed as the highestpaid actress in Hollywood, according to a Forbes report in 2011, brings in an estimated $30 million per year, and Brad Pitt, who is listed as one of Forbes highest-paid actors, brings in around $20 million. Together they donate large amounts of money to charities every year and help support humanitarian efforts around the world.

The duo made donations of $1 million to Doctors Without Borders and Global Action for Children to help launch their foundation.

According to tax records, in 2006, Angelina and Brad donated over $8 million to charities. More recently, in January 2011, the couple donated $2 million to the Namibian sanctuary called the Naankuse Lodge and Wildlife Sanctuary, where their family spent Christmas in 2010. The donation was made through the Jolie-Pitt Foundation in their daughter Shiloh’s name, who was born in Namibia. While celebrating Christmas, the family was able to help feed and care for orphaned baby baboons and foxes, according to a report in the Associated Press.

The well-traveled family enjoys spending the holidays overseas every other year, so this year, 2011, the Jolie-Pitts will be celebrating Christmas in the United States. The charitable family, who gives and helps others, doesn’t believe in spending large amounts of money on each other at Christmas time, but instead like to give gifts that come from the heart.

A United Nations Messenger of Peace, since 2008, Clooney has always had a heart for those suffering from poverty and social injustice. 2012 Porsche 911 Carrera Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> At 48, the Porsche 911 Carrera is younger than ever. The completely redesigned seventh-generation sports car icon is stepping into the limelight with its sleek and stretched silhouette, exciting contours and precisely designed features. Yet from every angle it is unmistakably

styletome.com

a 911, holding true to the Porsche 911 Carrera ‘evolution, not revolution’ design philosophy. The 100 mm or 3.9 inch longer wheelbase and reduced overall height underpin the fresh, athletic yet elegant appearance. When viewed from the front, the eye is drawn to the 911’s trademark

wide-arched fenders, emphasizing the wider front track. The side mirrors are now mounted on the upper edge of the door, which also helps highlight the new design line and gives the visual impression of width. ...

toys

The new lightweight body is an aluminumsteel composite construction and contributes greatly to the 45 kg or about 100 lbs weight reduction when compared to the previous 911 body. When combined with the greater structural rigidity and optimized aerodynamics – including a wider, variably extending rear spoiler – the new 911 Carrera’s front and rear lift has been reduced to near zero while retaining the Cd value of 0.29.

systems such as the Automatic Start Stop function, engine and transmission thermal management, electrical system recuperation, the world’s first seven-speed manual transmission and – in conjunction with the Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) – the ability to ‘sail’ or coast. The new electro-mechanical power steering offers not only Porsche’s typical precision and feedback but also helps increase efficiency and reduce fuel-consumption.

To complement the modern exterior design, Porsche designers created an interior reminiscent of the Carrera GT. The driver is now even more closely integrated within the cockpit thanks to the rising center console and high-mounted shift lever or gear selector located close to the steering wheel. As with the exterior, classic Porsche elements abound inside. Present is the instrument cluster with five round gauges – one of them a high resolution multifunction screen, and of course the central tachometer and the ignition lock to the left of the steering wheel.

For example, the 911 Carrera with the new 350 hp, 3.4-liter boxer engine and optional PDK consumes 8.2 l/100 km based on the NEDC – 1.6 l/100 km less than its predecessor.

Setting the standard in its class, as it has for generations, the new 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S raise the performance and efficiency bar yet another notch. All versions get by with significantly less than 10 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (official U.S. EPA fuel mileage estimates are TBD) and fuel consumption and emissions are up to 16 percent lower in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) when compared with the predecessor. This is achieved through

The 911 Carrera S with its 400 hp, 3.8-liter boxer engine – 15 hp more than before – achieves 8.7 l/100 km in the NEDC when paired with the optional PDK transmission. This represents a fuel consumption decrease of 14 percent or 1.5 l/100 km. At the same time there are performance improvements in both models. The 911 Carrera S with PDK accelerates from 0 to 60 in 4.1 seconds. Using the Launch Control function of the optional Sport Chrono Package cuts that to 3.9 seconds. The 911 Carrera with PDK needs only 4.4 seconds to sprint from a standing start to 60 mph (4.2 seconds when using the optional Sport Chrono Package’s Launch Control function). Top-track speed for the 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera is 188 mph and 179 mph, respectively.

::

The new 911 offers both better longitudinal dynamics and unprecedented top performance in terms of transverse dynamics. In addition to the longer wheelbase, the greater agility, precision and driving stability are based, among other things, on the wider front track, the new rear axle and new electro-mechanical power steering. Depending on the model, there are other standard or optional active control systems available that can help further enhance the overall driving dynamics. That is especially true for the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) active roll stabilization system, available for the first time on the 911 Carrera S.The system helps reduce lateral roll when cornering and helps keep the tires in the optimal position relative to the road surface. The new 911 further extends the span of seemingly contradictory attributes such as performance and efficiency, sportiness and every day practicality that have always typified the Porsche 911. That makes the 911 Carrera more of a 911 than ever. The new Porsche 911 Carrera celebrates its world premiere at the 2011 IAA Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The first new 911 models will arrive in U.S. dealerships beginning in February of 2012. The new 911 Carrera Coupe will have a base MSRP of $82,100, while the 911 Carrera S Coupe’s base MSRP will be $96,400 (excluding destination). Both models will include substantial additional equipment when compared to the previous models.<

THE FIFTH AMENDMENT: by Mark L. Horwitz > People think of the Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination as a tool used bythose who have violated the law. This is simply wrong.

The founding fathers who drafted the Constitution knew that without this protection, governments throughout history abused their citizens and punished the innocent. The Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz - A Professional Association 17 E. Pine St. Orlando, FL 32801 407-843-7733 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhorwitzlaw.com

Today, people have the misconception that simply because someone has invoked their Fifth Amendment privilege, that person must be guilty. This belief can not be further from the truth.

State and federal governments continuously pass criminal laws that set forth complicated and hard to understand provisions that criminalize conduct far beyond what the constitution’s authors ever imagined. The Supreme Court of the United States has on more than one occasion recognized that the Fifth Amendment’s basic function is to protect the innocent who might otherwise be ensnared by ambiguous circumstances. Those ambiguous circumstances have become more likely as the complexities of criminal laws continues to grow. In 2001, the

Supreme Court of the United States specifically ruled that a person can claim to be innocent and still properly invoke the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination. False confessions, long extended interrogations, mistakes by police and countless other factors have resulted in convictions of the innocent. The right of a person not to be forced to be “a witness against himself” is not reserved for the guilty.<

Food for Thought: Francis Metais By: Jennifer Marcus Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> If the definition of a master is someone having great skill and proficiency, then Francis Metais, Director of Food and Beverage at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando and the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek, is a Grand Master. His experience and knowledge of food and food history far surpasses anyone else in his field holding the same position making the Waldorf Astoria Orlando and Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek unique and revolutionary. “Food is the verbiage and writing of human kind,” shares Metais.

Francis Metais Director of Food and Beverage at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando and the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek

Most Directors of Food and Beverage have impressive resumes with business degrees, MBA’s, and are focused on managing their teams with the goal of big number profits. But Metais has a different approach. Metais is synonymous with passion. A passion for food. The quality of food. The history of food. And the experience food can bring to a person. When managing his team at the Waldorf, he doesn’t think about profits or lowering quality to cut costs. His vision is to find and maintain a team of workers that have the same passion and vision as himself. Metais is the perfect guy for this job. Not only was he born in France, which is arguably the food capital of the world, but he was also born into the food industry. His parents owned a small bar/ butchery/grocery store. Think Whole Foods but with a bar. He went on to study at the French Culinary School of Art in Paris, which was the best school in the world at the time. “We learned about dry hand cooking, catering, and special events so it was broad and gave me a good knowledge.”

In 1980, Metais was named Best Young Charcuterie in France. This championship earned him recognition and a job opportunity in the United States. He headed over to Arizona and opened four pastry shops and catering departments at Le Marche Gourmet and La Parisienne before becoming Executive Chef at the very chic restaurant, The White Truffle, in 1984. Just two years later, his name and ability caught the attention of the world’s most famous mouse. Our goal is quality

everywhere. Great food, great service, romantic, and family-oriented.

Metais became the Executive Chef at Chefs de France in Walt Disney World’s Epcot. He reported to the owners and founders who are three of the world’s most famous chefs including Paul Bocuse, which been named Chef of the Century, Gaston Lenôtre and Roger Verge. At this same time back over in Paris, the Walt Disney World

Bon Appetit

Corporation was developing Disneyland Paris, and wanted Metais on their staff. So back over the pond he went after four years in Orlando and he soon donned the title of Corporate Executive Chef. Managing 3,400 employees, developing new catering standards and creating 5-Star food and beverage operations became his focus for nine years before venturing on as the Director of Food and Beverage with Disney Cruise Line. By September 2003, he was back on American soil and was owner and partner of Orlando-based Anaelle & Hugo Restaurant and its 13,000 sq ft commercial pastry kitchen where he worked closely with Bocuse. The restaurant was recognized by Zagat as “America’s Top Restaurants.” In 2008, Metais accepted the job of Director of Hotel and Food Operations for Regent Seven Seas Cruises, which was awarded Best Luxury Cruise Line in the World. “I was traveling to Alaska, the Mediterranean, and even Antarctica, but it was hard always being on the road.” So in 2009, Metais put away his suitcase, came back to Orlando and found himself as the Director of Food and Beverage at the brand new Waldorf Astoria and Hilton Bonnet Creek. Because he has been at these hotels since their beginning, Metais has been able to use his decades of culinary experience to help develop, along with his team, cuisine that is imaginative, unique, and of impressive quality for its 11 restaurants as well as catering and in-room dining departments. Some of these include the famous Bull & Bear Steakhouse, where he has created and implemented a new menu, Oscars, Peacock Alley, the poolside Aquamarine, and La Luce Italian Restaurant, which was named Best New Restaurant and Best Wine List in Orlando.

would find on your typical bar menu, but the creations are in a class of their own.The shells are created from 90 percent real plantain chips, combined to form dough that is lighter and more magnificent than any typical taco shell. Metais conjured up this brilliant recipe when he was in Columbia and picked up a smashed plantain chip. He immediately thought of a way to incorporate it in such a way that would have customers asking, “mmm, what is that?” At the Waldorf, even the croissants are not overlooked. In fact, every few months, the chefs have a two-hour seminar to revisit the technique of how to make the perfect croissant keeping it delicate, buttery, and flaky. And it truly is the best croissant you’ll ever have. “Our goal is quality everywhere. Great food, great service, romantic, and familyoriented.” One of the exclusive offers the Waldorf and Metais have come up with is in-room dining taken to a whole new level. It is more than your average room service experience. Let’s say you have had a long day at the theme parks and are exhausted but still want a high quality, private meal. At the hotel, you can have a delicious dinner from one of the brilliant restaurants served in your room, with your own private server. He or she will be there to fill your wine glass, bring different courses, and offer anything you might need or want to try. Dinners can be customized and designed around what you enjoy. It’s almost like a Chef’s table but in your hotel room.

“What makes these hotels standout is the attention to detail and the quality and diversity of the food. We try to use the best ingredients and keep it as authentic as possible.”

As the holidays are arriving quickly, the Waldorf Astoria will be celebrating along with the season and offering an exquisite Bar du Chocolat in Peacock Alley. There will be thirty different chocolaty items including hot chocolate, chocolate caramels, and a gluten-free chocolate cookie made with lentils that Metais insists you’ll never know! But you can be assured that this could be quite possibly the best chocolate you’ve tasted if Metais had a hand in it.

Take for instance the shrimp tacos served on the “bar menu” at Peacock Alley. Quotes are needed for that description because the food might bear similar names to what you

He was awarded two gold medals in ‘chocolate carving’ and ‘coco painting’ and two gold medals in ‘chocolate candy’ and ‘chocolate cake’ in 1989. He also has an award

for ‘Most Sinful Dessert Contest’ and Best Chocolatier of the Year for the Midwest. And for the first time, the hotel will offer a WA Collection of Chocolates, which will be boxed and available for purchase. Another exclusivity with the hotel for the holidays is their New Years Eve package. For $2012 you and a guest will be treated to a one-of-a-kind experience! Waldorf Astoria Orlando New Year’s package includes a deluxe suite for two-nights (Fri & Sat), breakfast in Oscar’s each day; 2 rounds of golf and spa treatments for two; the exclusive Bull & Bear New Year’s Eve dinner extravaganza and a private black tie party in Sir Harry’s featuring free-flowing Perrier-Jouët Champagne. One of the most fascinating characteristics of Metais is that he really appreciates the history of food. He won’t just cook food. He needs to understand the food and where it came from to get the best creation. “What was yesterday is food for tomorrow.” With his combination of skills and a phenomenal and gorgeous hotel to work in, Metais is a perfect fit at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando and Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek. His culinary resume might impress you but tasting the food at these hotels is so much more delicious. For more information please visit: WaldorfAstoriaOrlando.com HiltonBonnetCreek.com <

> Anggun’s fate has followed a musical, spiritual, and geographical path. Her father, a writer, instilled in her a sense of the power of words and poetry. At an early age, dance, singing, and the piano became natural ways of expressing herself, and the stage became one big playground. Her homeland, Indonesia, and its 13,000 islands fell in love with her and watched her grow into a beautiful young woman. After starting out as a child mascot, she went on to embody the fascination of her country’s youth for the West and the excitement of rock. Her albums sold in the millions, her live gigs filled stadium after stadium, and the whole of Southeast Asia fell for her. But this budding woman was already dreaming of greater things, of traveling across the ocean and having the courage to start again from scratch. She did so first in London and then in Paris where a few crucial encounters led her to sign for a major French record company in 1997. Her first meaningful success in France was “La Neige au Sahara,” which was the most popular track on French radio in 1998, and the album went double gold. Over thirty-five other countries fell under her spell. America and its dreams were shimmering on the horizon. Italy also embraced her exotic soul songs with their classy French touch. The figures speak for themselves…

The first album was certified triple platinum export (over 900,000 copies sold), went Double-Platinum in Italy, Gold in France, Gold in Switzerland, Gold in Singapore, Gold in Finland, Platinum in Malaysia, Triple-Platinum in Indonesia. And so on. The album even broke into the Billboard Heatseekers Chart’s Top 20 in the US! The second album was a major hit as well, going platinum export. “Chrysalis” was certified Gold in Italy within a week of being released! The first single “Still Reminds Me” charted in the European Top 5 Singles charts. Naturally, Anggun’s success also included a large number of concerts and events abroad (World Music Awards, MTV Awards, Silver Screen Awards, Top of the Pops, Women Inspire Awards, a concert for the Pope at the Vatican, etc.). This constant, endless traveling has taken her farther and farther away from France. Yet the two million albums she sold worldwide in less than 5 years made Anggun one of the French record industry’s biggest success stories, alongside the likes of Air, Manu Chao, and Daft Punk. As a woman with a foot in two different cultures, she is a messenger of musical harmony who pours out her heart, sometimes wounded by being away, often reinvigorated by adventure. Anggun’s career and talent are unique. France opened its doors to her, and Anggun has opened her heart. To millions of fans, she is a living example of

a free woman who combines the grace and inspiration of French and Asian culture. Luminescence In 2004, Anggun brought out an elegant and precious album entitled “Luminescence,” which was greeted with rave reviews by the media and the public alike. Featuring a number of prestigious guests, “Luminescence” established Anggun’s reputation for good and was certified platinum in France and for export. Her second single, “Saviour/Cesse la Pluie,” was the most played Frenchspeaking song on radio stations overseas in 2005 and spent more than 15 consecutive weeks in the French Top 40 singles chart. Luc Besson chose the song as the theme tune for his US blockbuster “The Transporter 2.” Then, at the end of 2007, Anggun was once more in the news when she sang in the BBC film “Planet Earth.” Elevation In 2007, Anggun called on some big names from the hip-hop scene such as Pras from The Fugees to deliver an album with a resolutely urban sound that surprised listeners. With its staccato rhythms, urban flow, and powerful production, Anggun once more struck out from the beaten track and showed her considerable talent where we least expected it. She took a real ar-

tistic risk and was rewarded with a gold-export Award in France and a phenomenal 8-times Platinum Award in her native country, Indonesia. Her committed work for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations As an artist, Anggun only sees any value in fame if it enables her to promote a message of universal importance. Already deeply conscious of in the major issues facing today’s world, Anggun accepted immediately when the FAO asked her to be one of its Goodwill Ambassadors. Anggun devotes a great deal of time and effort to her role as a spokeswoman for the organization’s essential programs, in particular the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals), a road map for global leaders in order to ensure that everyone on the planet has adequate nutrition.

Anggun has carried this message to the four corners of the globe and to her adoring fans, encouraging them, for example, to sign a large-scale petition against global hunger (www.1billionhungry.org). She attracts to encourage people everywhere to make the world a fairer and more harmonious place. <

Don‘t Miss the beat

> A special time of year is upon us yet again; luxurious scarves are relevant, pumpkin spiced everything is available, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation marathons are in full effect. And of course, it’s time to jam to some holiday music! Whether you prefer Divas singing high notes, the cool, purring sound of Frank Sinatra, or angelic choirs that send chills to the soul, tis the season to blare some holiday tunes. Can a person really overdose on Bing Crosby in December? Absolutely not. Anticipation is always high to hear who will be releasing their first album with a Yule Tide message. It’s even more amazing when the time comes to create your first playlist after these declarations. Some classic songs will be the canvas for many artists to showcase their festive side. We’re especially thrilled to remind you of three in particular- not to forget from iTunes!

Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire... Carole King, Michael Buble & Justin Bieber By: Megan Hyde Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Up first is the delightfully songful Carole King with not only her first album in a decade but her first ever Christmas album. King is known for her earthy and rhythmic sound and these sounds can be heard throughout her new release, A Holiday Carole. Since rising to fame five generations ago she has remained an extremely preferred artist who delivers good music consistently. With over 25 records since 1968 and countless appearances on numerous collaborations, Carole is trying a whole new musical venture with her holiday efforts. A Holiday Carole, features 12 holiday songs that leads right into to the New Year. A variety of options to purchase are available via Carole’s website with different gift packages that include everything from the CD itself to a special edition ornament and an autographed print. This is a great gift that will keep on giving year after year. Another fabulous release would be the always debonair and especially handsome Michael Buble. Michael Buble Christmas

offers definitive Christmas tunes and also one original song. As if this isn’t enough already, Target is hosting a deluxe version with three additional tracks to sip hot chocolate while listening to Michael. Michael explained to ABC News his reasoning for doing a Christmas album: “I wanted to make a record that would outlive me. And I wanted to do for people what Bing Crosby did for me...he introduced me to the world of jazz and melody. And I didn’t want to be hip or edgy. I just wanted to make a really sweet Christmas record that the kids can grow on.” Michael constantly provides his audience with smooth, old-world charm with every song he sings. There is no doubt this album would be anything less than cheerful, holiday perfection. Another artist spreading joyful jingles would be Justin Bieber. His first try at the holiday classics, Justin contributes to the world Under the Mistletoe for its listening pleasure. Collaborations with Usher, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Busta Rhymes and (last month’s Don’t Miss the Beat featured musicians) The Band Perry, provoke the utmost of holiday fun-filled moments. The Biebs, with a voice slightly more evolved and grown up, is absolutely taking part in the giving aspect of the season. It’s safe to say many, many fans will be thankful this Christmas. Proof of this already? Justin’s co-written original hit of the album, A Christmas Story (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open fire), is a duet with his mentor R&B singer Usher. It achieved over seventeen million views within a week of going live. Wishing to kiss him under the mistletoe- OK- reality check: these admirers would prefer their album under the tree. The most wonderful time of year is among us. A unity is in the air to help out our fellow man and spread good cheer to all. Munching on candy canes, sipping Eggnog and delighting in pleasant-sounding songs from these three, first time Christmas albums is the way to go. Indulge in Carole King, Michael Buble and Justin Bieber and don’t be shy to hit replay. It’s the time for spirits to be bright, joyful, and super happy to the tunes of wonderful music.<

Ask Dr. Newman

am interested in having plastic Q: Isurgery on my breasts and abdomen. I have never done this sort of thing before and do not know where to begin. Any help?

A: Today more than ever, there is

so much information available to patients that it is hard to know what to believe. The media and Internet may tout some new technology as the latest and greatest. Some of these techniques are unfortunately often times ahead of the science necessary to validate these procedures. For this reason, it is best to begin with a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon. E-mail your questions or concerns to Charles E. Newman, Jr. M.D. of Newman Plastic Surgery info@newmanplasticsurgery.com

A recent multi-series report in USA Today examined the recent boon in non-plastic surgeons delving into the cosmetic surgery arena. This worrisome trend is becoming increasingly prevalent in our state. Frequently these practitioners are inadequately

trained and lack the ability and expertise to deliver the desired results. Patient safety can also be placed at risk. Unfortunately, there is insufficient regulation and patients must be avid consumers, and at a minimum, should obtain the following information: 1) Insist on meeting the surgeon who will perform the procedure in advance 2) Check whether the facility is accredited 3) Find out whether he or she is board certified in plastic surgery 4) Find out if there is a history of disciplinary action 5) Does the surgeon have hospital privileges?

The consultation is an important opportunity for questions to be asked and answered. It should include a candid discussion of risks as well as benefits of the surgery. A thorough consultation also involves a review of medical history including any existing medical conditions. All these factors help the surgeon to custom-tailor the operation to best meet the needs of each patient. To paraphrase a mentor of mine, the best surgeons are those that can manage you through the best of times and also the worst of times. If something is not going as well as you would like, the doctor is going to be there for you and carry you through that period. They know how to take you through the journey and get you to the finish line.

Beyond the basics, however, patients must feel comfortable with their surgeon and with the proposed plan.

Flu Prevention Day By: Cathleen K. Bode Credits: Kayla Hernandez Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> The temperatures decrease while the risk of getting the flu increases. We try to avoid this viral infection, but 10% to 20% of Americans catch it annually. Fortunately, there are new tips for preventing the flu.

out the season for extra precaution.

Snack

Sleep In when you can

Yogurt is full of probiotics, aka immun booster. Add a little granola and some berries for an extra kick.

There is no getting around the vaccine. People who are afraid of needles can avoid a shot with an effective alternative: a nasal spray. Make sure to get either one as soon as they become available. The peak of the flu season is in December, so it’s best to get it by then. Vaccine effectiveness varies from one person to another. Studies of healthy young adults have shown influenza vaccine to be 70 percent to 90 percent effective in preventing illness. In the elderly and those with chronic medical conditions, the vaccine is often less effective in preventing influenza than in reducing the severity of the illness and the risk of serious complications and death. Research has shown the vaccine to reduce hospitalization by about 70 percent and death by about 85 percent in independent seniors. Some possible side effects are soreness and temporary fatigue from the shot and a runny nose, sore throat, or headache from the nasal spray.

Breakfast

Turn off those obnoxious alarm clocks. Sleep strengthens your immune system.

Sauna

Make an omelet. Eggs and Swiss cheese have large amounts of vitamin D, which is an important vitamin in preventing the flu. Pair that with a glass of 100% real (vitamin C abundant) orange juice. Shop

Search for a vinyl or leather bag. Stow away your cloth handbags in exchange for one that germs can be easily wiped off with a swipe of an antibacterial wipe. Lunch

Try a tuna fish sandwich, and a side salad with ‘garlic’ dressing.Tuna fish is loaded with vitamin D and garlic is rich in phytonutrients, which have antiviral properties. Do what makes you happy

styletome.com

Dinner

Get in a dose of vitamin D from smoked salmon. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water throughout the day! Go to Bed Early

Have a cup of antioxidants/decaffeinated green tea to wind down your day. Turn off the light and sleep tight…

It’ll keep you stress free! Gym

This is where Flu Prevention Day comes in. It’s a day that integrates many of the tips for keeping the risk of catching the flu down. Regularly disperse these methods through-

Being exposed to high temperatures creates an artificial fever state stimulating the immune system, which results in an increased production of antibodies and interferons. (Use common sense on this one, as it is not safe to stay in high temperatures for too long.)

Spend at least 30-60 minutes a day doing whatever aerobic exercise you find least painful. Pat yourself on your shrinking ‘behind.’ You just boosted your antibodies.

With the hustle and bustle of the holidays fast approaching, it’s time to begin thinking about what you can do to get your skin looking and feeling it’s best. Although the holidays are a festive time of year, they can also be a time of added stress. Even though some stress is a good thing, too much stress can cause cells to age faster. Keep stress under control by finding a suitable outlet to decompress. So sleep, eat (healthy), and be merry!

Botox® is the number one non-surgical cosmetic procedure performed year after year and for good reason – it delivers consistent and remarkable results. Botox® is a 5-minute virtually painless procedure with results that soften wrinkles leaving your skin looking younger and more refreshed. When performed by a qualified specialist such as a Board Certified Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon, it is a safe procedure with little to no risk or downtime.

Now that we have the fundamentals under control, there are two “quick fix” procedures that I find to be true homeruns in getting your skin looking great in time for the holidays! First, Botox®, and the second, photo-facials. As I’ve often discussed, research has identified two key determinants in how others perceive your age 1) skin tone or texture and 2) wrinkles. Both of my “quick fix” recommendations do a phenomenal job in addressing these key factors.

To help improve skin tone and texture, consider treating yourself to a Photo-facial. Photo-facials are the perfect non-ablative laser procedure for improving your skin’s overall appearance. The truth is, a series of these treatments can literally take years off of how old your skin looks. Photo-facials are performed using an intense pulsed light (IPL) device that targets brown and red pigment in the skin including sun damage, age spots, and broken capillaries. Following your procedure, the treated

area becomes increasingly dark and/ or inflamed and gradually sloughs off over a period of 4-5 days revealing clearer and more healthy looking skin. An added benefit of this procedure is that it also stimulates the production of collagen, a protein responsible for maintaining fullness and elasticity in the skin. There is one caveat - Not all photofacials are created equal. Beware of offices that advertise extremely low pricing, as they are likely using equipment that is inadequate and won’t give you the results that you are looking for. We use Palomar’s Starlux 500 at our office and I believe it to be the gold standard for this type of procedure. I also have great respect for the technology offered by Lumenis. Treat yourself to these “quickfixes” in time for the holidays and give yourself the gift of healthy and younger looking skin!

Eli e Doctors > In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Elite Doctors’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise and extremely well recognized within our community. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available in the Central Florida area.<

Comprehensive Diagnostic Imaging > Dr. Richard J. Bagby has his medical boards, both in diagnostic radiology and in nuclear medicine. He was originally attracted to the field of medicine, as a response to his own father’s death from tuberculosis, when Richard was only 9 years of age. Seeing how families can be ravaged and financially handicapped by a severe, chronic illness, Bagby decided to become a physician, so as to help others avoid that fate.

Location Boston Diagnostic Imaging 398 E. Altamonte Drive Altamonte Springs, FL 32701 407-331-9355

Emory University in Atlanta was the site of his pursuit of college, medical school, internal medicine internship, diagnostic radiology residency and interventional radiology fellowship. Emory has continued to play an important role in his life, as he has served as a member of the medical school alumni board of directors, as president in 1997 of the Association of Emory Alumni, and now as an emeritus member of the Board of Trustees of the entire university. Practicing out of Boston Diagnostic Imaging of Altamonte Springs, Orlando and Sanford, he is dedicated to providing quality images in radiography, mammography, ultrasound, computed diagnostic scanning, magnetic resonance imaging scanning, PET scanning, arthrography and osteoporosis scanning. At BDI, the employees and doctors strive to make the patient feel as comfortable as possible. They make every attempt to stay on schedule for patient appointments. They can get the results to the physicians’ offices shortly after the exams are concluded. They can schedule multiple exams consecutively, on the same day. And, they do all of this in the most comfortable and attractive surroundings possible. Bagby has been acknowledged by his peers by serving as president of the Orange County Medical Society in 1986, of the

Florida Medical Association in 1996, and of the Florida Radiological Society in 1998. He was selected for many years as a delegate to the American Medical Association and even served as vice chair of the delegation for four years. He has recently completed a 14 year term as a member of the Board of Directors of the First Professionals Insurance Company (FPIC), the insurer of the largest numbers of physicians in the state of Florida. That company has been recently purchased by The Doctors Company (TDC), the largest physicians’ insurance company in America. Elected a fellow in the American College of Radiology, Bagby has also received the gold medal award from the Florida Radiological Society in 2001. Furthermore, he has been awarded the Emory Medical School Award of Honor in 2001 and the Significant Sigma Chi Award from the Sigma Chi Fraternity Grand Chapter in 2006. “Practicing medicine in Central Florida continues to be the greatest honor I can ever have,” says Bagby. <

Excellence in Psychiatry >Ricardo Bernal MD has been providing professional services as an independent psychiatrist in Orlando, since 2006. His intensive training took place at an inner city hospital in Bronx, NY. This allowed for him to gain ample experience in treating complex patients. To top such experience, he pursued the opportunity to further his education with a Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship at the prestigious Scott & White Memorial Hospital, a state of the art regional hospital in Central Texas. Within four years of graduation from his fellowship, he opened a thriving solo practice in Orlando that continues to provide unique services. Dr. Bernal takes particular pride in offering patients his active-listening skills, his willingness to provide more than symptom-management, as his appointments always involve medication management and brief therapy with psycho-education. Excellence in psychiatry is not defined by the resolution of symptoms with a mixture of chemicals prescribed to patients. Rather, it is defined by the capacity to provide the support, understanding and empathy inherent to knowing about the dynamics of humans, their families and their different life phases. True care involves guidance, positive reinforcement, accountability and corrective remarks that will allow for happiness and success. The commitment to provide such may not always be popular, but is appreciated over time.

WEBSITE www.doctorbernal.com

With much humbleness Dr. Bernal says: “I can only understand my success as being dependent on a very special blessing; that of sincerely finding an interest in each individual as a miraculous and unique creature of the universe that has been endowed with the distinctive gifts inherent to human beings: discernible emotions, language, speech, empathy, among others. Marveled by such, I just allow that special skill to understand individuals in an integral way and address their weaknesses.”

Dr. Bernal appears to take much pleasure in dealing with individuals very closely. He states he prefers to consider his patients as his “relatives of the world.” That allows him to have only the best interest of the patient always in his mind “you see, they are ‘relatives’…” he says. He considers his mission that of sharing some of his own knowledge and personal experience with others to enable them to find happiness in the same way he does: “In a field that fosters and studies relationships due to their crucial importance in growth, development, the creation of a sense of belonging and identity and a sense of continuity with the universe, I have found something extraordinary: a happy existence by the side of my wife, a woman that incorporates and summarizes the greatest qualities anyone may seek in a partner: altruism, kindness, devotion, selflessness, and unconditional love. She, along with my son, my other eternal love, are the never-ending source of energy that supports my mission.”<

Talent, Commitment & Passion > “There’s no place like home.” Since I was born at Florida Hospital and grew up in Orlando, I have proudly used this saying for practically my entire life. With a passion for sports and a love of Central Florida, it seemed only natural to practice medicine in my hometown. It has always been my desire to serve the community in which I was raised. This dream finally became a reality 5 ½ years ago after I teamed up with my father, Gideon G. Lewis, M.D. (Family Medicine), and formed Drs. Lewis and Lewis, P.A. We established our multi-specialty practice with the foundation of supporting the Central Florida community and providing personalized care by giving the quality time each patient deserves. Over this time, I have been very blessed to have treated thousands of patients here in Orlando, and making a difference in many lives. I have enjoyed building relationships with many patients, especially the numerous athletes and runners I have treated. These relationships have allowed me to be able to treat current and former athletes from the NBA, MLB, NFL, PGA, X-Games, NCAA, as well as Olympic athletes. As a former college tennis player and being an avid runner, I have always had a special interest in sports medicine. Being involved with sports has provided me with a great understanding and knowledge of athletic injuries. “Dr. Lewis’ professional background is outstanding and, yes, Orlando is his hometown, but what truly sets him apart from other physicians is his understanding of the mind, the heart, and the spirit of the athlete. He understands the athlete’s psyche. Understanding the athlete and being able to relate to the athlete is essential when caring for them. Unfortunately, very few ‘sports

medicine’ healthcare professional possess this gift. He listens, hears their goals and aspirations, and then he focuses on how to get them back to their sport as quickly as possible. This rare gift has made him immensely popular with the running community.” Susan Paul (Training Program Director of TrackShack, Runners World Magazine contributor) “As a professional athlete for over 25 years there was nothing more important than staying healthy in order to remain at the top of your game. I was fortunate to be referred to Dr. Lewis by a well respected Orlando surgeon. I could not be more satisfied with the care and treatment my family and I have received. Dr. Lewis is an outstanding individual and truly cares for people and is passionate about his work. When you combine talent, commitment and passion you create a winner. I can say without a doubt that Dr. Lewis has these attributes and would be an asset to anyone.” Ron Scarpa (Hall of Fame Waterskier, 4-time Overall World Champion Barefoot Waterskier, X-Game Gold Medalist, and Guinness Book World Record Holder) My mission will continue to provide the best foot and ankle care in Central Florida, and offer the highest quality of surgical and non-surgical care. I am proud to be giving back to the city that has offered and given me so much.<

Christmas List By: Cathleen K. Bode

> While you’re out fighting for a parking spot, and squeezing through crowds of shoppers this holiday season it can be easy to forget about your loyal companion, your pet. So, what do you get your attention-seeking confidant?

Credits: Kristina Gavilaness Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Here are a few items purr-fect for your trendy pet

Beverly Hills Mutt Club, a high-end pet boutique based in Los Angeles has an online shop for the chicest pets. You will find canine couture and jewels that Sandra Bullock, and Jamie Lee Curtis just had to have for their pets. One of the best sellers are the Safari Swarovski crystal retractable leads that range from $220-$265. Add this great bling to compliment your sweetie.

Does your pet dig modern art? The DNA Pet Portrait from Petgadgets.com gives you a unique way of celebrating the great spirit of your pal. The process is quick and painless; just a swab from your pet’s mouth, and the result of the portrait is remarkable. The DNA Pet Portrait is $199 and can be created for virtually any mammal or reptiles. Every masterpiece will be as unique as your pet.

Where does your pet sleep at night? Yoox.com provides a great selection of luxurious beds for your furry friend. The Sofa 0’ is a work-of-art made of lacquered ceramics. Designed in Paris, and hand-shaped by French craftsmen. The contemporary innovation of this sofa will bring perfection to your home. It is a limited edition of only one hundred pieces made and cost $7,100..

For those restless furry sleepers- Is your pet tired of the same old paw printed squishy bed products pet stores seem to never have enough of? WOWBOW London has a fresh outlook on bedding and dining for your best friend. The beds range from $1,090- $2,208 and higher, and the dining table at $358 - $455. The Mija line of pet furniture is functional and aesthetically pleasing for your home. The beds are created with thick acrylic, furnished with faux suede cushions, and filled with memory foam. Tail wagging friends, say goodbye to those sleepless nights!

Who doesn’t like to show off their drooling prize possession? What better way to spoil them then with a fresh scent that will keep our pals smelling great? A 100% vegan fragrance ‘Sexy Beast’ has come to our rescue. With a classic blend of bergamot, vanilla, mandarin, and nutmeg oils your pet will be guaranteed to smell amazing. The signature fragrance will set you back $65. If you really want to splurge on your loyal friend ‘Sexy Beast’ has a limited edition bottle covered in Swarovski crystals for $850. Did I mention that you can get your pet’s name engraved on the bottle?

No matter what day of the year our pets love us day in, and day out. With the holidays coming around, this Christmas list is a great way to spoil ourselves- OOPS- our hairy pals with gifts they would love! (^-^) <

Our Town Holidays at Universal Studios Florida Orlando, FL- Universal Orlando Resort will celebrate 10 years of a great partnership with the Macy’s Holiday Parade by filling the streets every evening with some of the same iconic elements seen winding through New York City each year at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The beloved event features colorful holiday characters, fantasy-filled floats - including one specially designed to commemorate the 10-year milestone - as well as a tree-lighting ceremony by Santa Claus and dozens of larger-thanlife balloons. The Macy’s Holiday Parade also welcomes select park guests to participate in the procession as real balloonhandlers guiding the helium giants. It is an experience truly unique and exclusive to Universal Orlando. Returning this year with more concerts than ever before is Mannheim Steamroller. With more than 40 million albums sold worldwide they are considered the masters of Christmas music. The acclaimed musical group will take to the Music Plaza stage in Universal Orlando six times this year to play their memorable holiday hits for guests, performing on December 3, 4, 10, 11, 17 and 18. December 3, 2011 to January 1, 2012 12pm to Close (Times may vary per events) 6000 Universal Blvd. Orlando, FL 32819 For more information call 407-363-8000 Or visit www.universalorlando.com

At the Wall Street Plaza in years past they have shown the ball drop in Time’s Square in New York City on a large screen. There are nine nightclubs and bars with live bands, DJ’s, and a Champagne toast at midnight. On Church Street partiers ring in the New Year with fireworks and the Orange Drop, an Orlando version of the NYC ball drop. You’ll also have access to their five nightclubs: Antigua, Big Belly Brewery, Chillers, and Latitudes. December 31, 2011 8:00 pm to 3:00 am Wall Street Plaza 19 N. For more information call 407-649-4270 Or visit www.churchstreetbars.com

Winter Park, FL- The 2011 Winter Park Christmas Parade will take place along the streets of Park Avenue in Downtown Winter Park. The parade features more than 100 parade units including marching bands, police and fire departments, and Disney World and SeaWorld floats. After the parade you can go ice-skating in the outdoor skating rink in Central Park. Before and during the parade, Leadership Winter Park will host their annual Pancake Breakfast at the Central Park stage.

Disney World Marathon Weekend

Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling (407) 644-828. Proceeds benefit elementary schools in the Winter Park area.

Of course the big draw of any Disney race is running through the theme park because there are many characters and entertainers throughout the course. Racers can stop for photos with characters, many of which are rarely out and about in the parks. There will also be bands, high school cheering squads, DJ’s, dancers, and lots of entertainment along the course to distract you from the miles. Although Disney has increased the capacity of the races, the spots fill up quickly. People have until December 2011 to register but we recommend you do it as soon as possible. January 5 to January 8, 2012 For more information call 407-938-3398 Or visit www.espnwwos.disney.go.com Holiday Special Events at JW Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, FL- The JW Marriott offers many events in December and January to commemorate the holidays including a Christmas Eve celebration from 5 to 9pm during which the Citron Culinary team will prepare a prime rib feast. On Christmas Day the celebration goes from 1 to 8pm with carved ham and turkey, a Champagne and wine bar, and a buffet for children that includes a visit from Santa from 2 to 4pm. There is also a Christmas dinner that evening from 5 to 9pm with an Italian holiday menu. On December 28 from 3 to 5pm families can participate in a Gingerbread House Contest. December 23rd - 30th in the Coquina Ballroom families always have the chance to visit the enchanting Peppermint Square between 9am and 9pm.There will be snow-covered treetops, Wii games, candy canes, movies, arcade games, hot chocolate, and even the chance to win a prize. It’s a holiday event you won’t want to miss! For New Years, the JW Marriott offers three different celebrations to choose from. The first is in the Lobby Lounge from 4pm to 2am where guests can experience continuous music and festivities, including party favors. Another option is from 5:30 to 11pm and includes the Citron Culinary Team’s specialty: a New Year’s Eve buffet selection (for both adults and children) and a Champagne and wine bar. The final option is a fivecourse menu provided from 6 to 10pm at Primo and a celebratory Champagne toast and fireworks at midnight.

The Ritz-Carlton offers a variety of events during the holiday season as well beginning with the Gingerbread School at Santa’s workshop. On various days in December between 9am to 11:30 am, and 1pm to 3:30pm families can join the Pastry Team in building their own gingerbread houses. The cost is a $10 donation to The Children’s Miracle Network. On December 17, 18 and 23 the RitzCarlton offers tea with a twist! Santa’s Teddy Bear Tea Party goes from 11am to 3pm and includes live entertainment, a special activity for the children, and a visit from Santa. On December 24, the Holiday Carolers will make a special appearance at the Teddy Bear Tea Party from 2 to 4pm. On December 22 in the Tuscany Ballroom join Santa and Mrs. Claus for a cozy holiday breakfast featuring story telling and a sing-along where you can take a picture with Santa. Come Christmas Eve there is brunch at The Vineyard Grill. Enjoy a gourmet buffet with all the trimmings and live entertainment. At night there is dinner at Norman’s from 5 to 9pm. Celebrate with a three-course seasonal menu prepared by world-class chefs. Wine pairings optional. For reigning in the New Year, the RitzCarlton hosts a New Year’s Eve Game Day at Fairways Pub as well as three New Year’s Eve dinners: Norman’s, The Vineyard Grill, and a Star-Lit Lobster Bake on the DaVinci Terrace. There is also a celebration in the Lobby Lounge from 8pm to 2am including live entertainment, a Champagne toast, and a tapas buffet. Attendees must be 21 and older for that event, but from 6pm to 1am the Ritz Kids puts on “Once Upon A New Year’s Eve” for guests ages 5 to 12. There will be a delicious, kid-friendly dinner buffet, fairytale-themed activities and costumes, a Gatorland show, face painting, caricatures, and fireworks at midnight. Finally, start the first day of the New Year by enjoying a Sunday brunch at The Vineyard Grill from 12 to 2:30pm with complimentary bubbles and live entertainment. Lake Buena Vista, FL- This festival of races is held annually during the beginning of January (usually the first full weekend after the New Year), and has grown into the largest combined running event in the country; last year nearly 55,000 competitors registered to run. The schedule for the weekend’s races has remained consistent with the Family 5K Fun Run on Friday, the Half Marathon (13.1 miles) on Saturday, and the Full Marathon (26.2 miles) taking place on Sunday. Runners can also register to compete in both the half and full marathons in what’s known as Goofy’s Race-And-A-Half Challenge (39.3 total miles and you receive three medals for completing the two races). Disney’s races welcome competitors of all abilities, and one definitely does not have to be a World Class athlete to take

part, many walkers also participate; Disney has set a generous 16:00 min/mile pace time to complete the race.
