signature food item. From fine wine and fresh pasta in Primo, to Southern inspired cuisine and cask wines in Highball & Harvest, guests relished in cuisine as diverse as the resort! Next up was the Southern BBQ Class at Highball & Harvest. The restaurant’s Southern Trained BBQ chefs showed eager attendees how to cook great, southern BBQ favorites at home such as Beer Can Chicken, Cedar Plank Salmon and mouth-watering ribs. After lunch, mixologist taught guest how to make specialty cocktails that pair nicely with BBQ cuisine. Wrapping up the weekend was the White Apron Culinary Competition, which also took place at Highball & Harvest. Attendees split into teams, each led by a RitzCarlton Chef, and had 2 hours to create an appetizer, entree and dessert to share with the entire group. Judges voted on the dishes and awarded prizes based on presentation and flavor to the winning teams. It was truly a fun, hands-on cooking experience for all! Avid Orlando Style readers know that this magazine is passionate about regularly recognizing the best of the best in various industries. On August 11th, dozens of those professionals came together as Orlando Style honored their personal achievements in person. Elite doctors, attorneys and VIPS all gathered at Christner’s Prime Steak & Lobster for an appreciation cocktail party like no other. The proud group mingled and conversed over delectable cuisine and cocktails in celebration of their recognition in issues of Orlando Style Magazine. Congratulations to all the many, great and talented professionals! On your mark… get set… go! On August 15th, Track Shack celebrated their 38th anniversary by hosting their 23rd Annual Celebration of Running 5k. Presented by Florida Hospital, the event proved to be a true celebration of Central Florida’s community of runners and walkers as thousands packed the streets of Orlando along a 3.1 mile route that started at the spectacular Orlando Cultural Park and passed by Track Shack, Lake Highland and Lake Formosa. It was high energy from start to finish as DJ Paul Spivey provided course entertainment and upbeat tunes outside of Track Shack to help get those legs moving faster! Fitness enthusiast of all ages were a part of the celebration and everyone received a stunning medal at the finish line. Lakeridge Winery’s Annual Harvest Grape Stomp Festival is a beloved tradition in Central Florida. This year proved to be no
different as the Orlando community gathered for the 21st annual event. From August 15th-16th, locals and visitors alike drove to Clermont to partake in this exciting two-day outdoor event. Featuring live music, grape stomping and award-winning Lakeridge Wines, the Harvest Grape Stomp brought families, couples and friends from all walks of life together for endless laughs, loads of fun and unforgettable memories. From bounce houses to concessions, a variety of children’s activities were also offered on the festival grounds at this family-friendly event. Visitors even had the opportunity to stop by the Lakeridge Winery booth and enter for a chance to win a flat screen HDTV! A $2 donation at the gate benefitted the Boys & Girls Club of Orlando. On August 22nd, Style FX teamed up with Orlando Style Magazine to present Renaissance Men. Held at Orlando’s One80 Grey Goose Lounge, Renaissance Men was a ticketed event that allowed guests to experience the newest trends in Men’s luxury. From high fashion and fine spirits to new technology and how to sport a healthy lifestyle, all attendees of Renaissance Men got to experience nothing but the finest. Event DJ and Co-Host, Scotty B, filled the room with musical energy while servers passed hors d’oeuvres and bartenders served up fine spirits and complimentary cocktails. As with any Style FX event, attendees had a phenomenal time as they were spoiled by VIP treatment all night long. Forget the Bad Girl’s Club! Oxygen’s hit TV show is no match to Orlando’s charitable organization, Mel’s Bad Girls Club (MBGC). On August 29th, MBGC held their 9th annual “Prom” at the Orchid Garden in Downtown Orlando. Whether you loved your high school prom, hated it or missed it all together, MBGC gave adults the chance to do it all over again without the curfew and spiked cocktails! This time around, guests were invited to make “new” prom memories with a twist. Themed “Like Totally 80s,” this year’s prom included silent auction items, handmade decorations, over 1000 balloons, free desserts, photographs and of course a live band and DJ to keep the grooves going all night long! The MBGC Prom was the perfect excuse for adults to get dressed up, dance, and have a great time all for a good cause. With each Prom ticket attendees helped benefit B.A.S.E Camp Children’s Cancer Foundation. Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

NDO iX OUT & ABOUT
Technological early adopters, brace yourself ! Orlando iX, an international digital festival is coming to Downtown Orlando and the Orange County Convention Center from October 2-6. This will consist of five jam-packed days of learning, playing, connecting, and digital innovation. There will be a series of conferences and exhibitions that will showcase growth in entertainment technology, interactive media, and digital arts. The festival is expected to bring 8,000-15,000 enthusiasts a day to the Orange County Convention Center. Organizations including EA Sports, Full Sail, and our local theme parks make Orlando a technological hub. This helps to bloom an advancement in Orlando’s technology scene and Orlando iX is here to prove it. No other event is expected to draw in this amount of technological early adopters. The iX website mentions the attendees will consist of game developers, designers, producers, creative technologist, animators, artists, programmers, tech enthusiast, national media, venture
investors, and digital entrepreneurs. The festival will display digital innovation and creativity that will build connections between worldwide industry leaders and emerging companies. The kick-off opening party will be held on October 2nd from 6 to 10 p.m. on Wall Street Plaza in Downtown Orlando. You’ll be able to mix and mingle while being entertained with an evening of music, light food, and drinks. The following four epic days will consist of speaker sessions, interactive exhibitions, game play, entertainment, and networking events. Experiences will also include 66,000 square feet with about 130 exhibits of the newest lighting displays, sound equipment, and simulations. Fortunately, you’ll have more opportunities to sip and mingle with creative technologists from all over the world at their nightly parties and entertainmentfueled events.
Technological innovation and the influx of technology-related companies in the Orlando area has made our beloved city one of the fastest growing high technology centers in the nation. Not only will this enhance our technological representation in Orlando even more, but this event also brings a positive economic impact to our community. Orlando iX will allow local emerging companies to expose their products and services to nearly 50,000 people in Orlando alone. As the inaugural year and pilot for the digital festival, it is already creating a huge buzz for enthusiasts around the globe. According to executive producer, David Glass, they are aiming to triple the festival by its fourth year. Overall, this International Digital Festival is exciting news for Orlando and we are looking forward to the hands-on experience of the world’s newest innovations in technology. Don’t forget to get involved in the future by attending this fantastic local event.

TAPA TORO @ I-DRIVE 360 A Celebration of Spanish Cuisine By Maria Delis
Fusing food and entertainment under one roof is not a new concept for Vassilis and Katerina Coumbaros, the husband and wife team behind International Drive’s Taverna Opa Orlando. The popular eatery is a hit because patrons enjoy delectable Greek cuisine while awaking part of their Dionysian spirit through music and dancing. The concept has worked so well in Orlando’s busy tourist corridor that the couple decided to open a second restaurant. After visiting Spain and falling in love with the culture and food, Katerina and Vassilis found their inspiration. “Tapa Toro is our way of bringing all these memories home,” said Katerina Coumbaros.
The new restaurant is located in the I-Drive 360 complex, home to The Orlando Eye. Paying tribute to both classic and contemporary Spanish cuisine, Tapa Toro has a rich tapas menu and a broad selection of Spanish wines, spirits and cocktails. The restaurant’s focal point, however, is the seven-foot-wide “paella pit.” A twelve-seat, white marble bar surrounds the pit allowing guests to watch the chef prepare paella dishes. Vibrant mosaic tiles decorate the two end-walls of the paella bar, a design reminiscent of Park Güell in Barcelona, while the dining rooms exude a contemporary-meets-rustic ambience.
22 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
Tina Marie Interior Design decorated Tapa Toro with “Barcelona-inspired furnishings and light fixtures,” traditional art pieces, as well as interactive art housed in flat screen televisions. The generous interior space allows for Flamenco dancers to perform tableside to the beat of the guitar, and for the sounds of their heels on the wooden floor to travel throughout the restaurant, transporting diners to Spain – a country that knows how to celebrate life. In July, Orlando Style sampled Tapa Toro’s delicious offerings at a special media event hosted by Wendy Lopez, Executive Chef.

“PAYING TRIBUTE TO BOTH CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY SPANISH CUISINE, TAPA TORO HAS A RICH TAPAS MENU AND A BROAD SELECTION OF SPANISH WINES, SPIRITS AND COCKTAILS.”
“We import the paella rice from Spain,” she told us. She then showed us the short-grain rice that looks similar to the rice used in risotto. Bomba rice grows near Calasparra, a village in southeastern Spain. This type of rice is ideal for paella because of its ability to absorb water without turning into mush. Guests can try a paella de mariscos (seafood) or de pollo y chuleta de cordero (chicken breast and lamb chops). Veggie paella is also on the menu. Each pan serves three to four guests. It takes about 45 minutes to prepare, so sip on a glass of wine and sample a few tapas. Some of our favorites include the Croquetas de Jamon (ham and potato croquettes with manchego cheese), Kurobuta Tocino (crispy pork belly accompanied by carrot puree, mache salad, and marcona almonds), and
the Coliflor de Leon (roasted cauliflower with pea puree, capers and pickled sultanas). The Ensalada de Remolacha (roasted beets, candy cane beets, grapefruit, Florida orange, goat cheese espuma, and lemon dressing) was both refreshing and delish. And each tapa paired well with the house-made sangria. In addition to the sangria, Tapa Toro’s specialties include the Corazon de España (gin and tonic) and Tinto de Verano, a light red wine served in a porron.

The evening closed with a sampling of desserts, which included the Crema Catalana – a Spanish version of crème brûlée. Garnished with fresh mint and orange slices, it was a treat to our palates. Tapa Toro opens daily for brunch, lunch and dinner. For more information and for reservations, please visit tapatoro.restaurant. Buen Provecho!

HOP ON THE BANDWAGON By Autumn Barker
The runways for the fall/winter 2015 season were filled with funky and quirky takes on some of our favorite fashion trends. Athleisure and lingerieinspired designs reigned supreme, while the season’s classic colors - brown, black and gray- took backseat to bold oranges, pinks, and eighties inspired prints. If you’re looking to update your closet, hop on the bandwagon and try out some of this season’s most daring trends.
ORANGE (AND PINK) IS THE NEW BLACK
Typically, the fall/winter runways are characterized by blacks and browns, but this year’s runways featured a vibrant pop of color. From Victoria Beckham’s burnt
orange trench coat and the two-toned orange slip dress featured at Prabal Gurung to the pink and pale peach tones that made an appearance on Delpozo’s and Narcisco Rodriguez’s respective runways, it is safe to say that orange and pink are the colors to have in your closet this season. Looking to pump up your look before you hit the street? Paige from Tuni’s on Park Avenue says that when it comes to accessories, “go bold or go home! Bold cuffs and necklaces are huge, but one of the freshest looks is the asymmetrical statement earrings. Handbags are oversized or mini; either way they make a statement.” 26 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
BLACK VELVET
It may not have all been black, but the classic textile paired with unexpected textures and cuts was all the rage on the runway this season. Lanvin brought us an effortlessly chic wrap skirt and tassel-closed cape combination, while Emilio Pucci featured the fabric in a fun, loose wide-legged trousers paired with a sheer bow tie blouse, and Alexander Wang gave the fabric a fierce makeover in a sleek coat paired with a leather turtle neck and studded platform boots. Trying to rock this trend? Paige recommends a neo goth meets modern Victorian vibe. Break up that velvet with some texture of

lace or netting. You’ll look like the hot goth with a little prim and proper.
EIGHTIES REVIVAL
Normally, hearing that phrase would make us cringe with fear, but fashion houses like Bottega Veneta, Saint Laurent, and Rodarte reminded us that in fashion, sometimes it’s best to revisit the past. Bottega Veneta experimented with the brash colors of the Memphis movement, Saint Laurent’s readyto-wear line featured prints and designs inspired by the punk-rock scene, and Rodarte truly embraced the flashiness of the decadent eighties with an unapologetically glitzy, sequined cocktail dress.
INTERIOR DESIGNS
Fashion designers look for inspiration everywhere, sometimes even within their own homes. This season’s runways were filled with fabrics usually found in a
stylish flat reimagined for ready-to-wear fashion. Burberry and Erdem perfected the trend immortalized by Scarlett O’Hara, transforming floral brocades into a beautiful trench coat and a tea dress, respectively. Tory Burch took a different approach, using Moroccan rug inspired textiles to create her fall line.
LET’S GET UNDRESSED
Seeing lingerie inspired designs in high fashion is nothing new, but this season’s runways highlighted how desirable the trend is for fall. The slip dress has made its comeback in a bold manner. Fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Rag & Bone gave the nineties staple a sporty makeover, while Dolce & Gabbana and Oscar de la Renta reminded us there is nothing better than classic black lace when it comes to lingerie. The overall takeaway from this trend is that sometimes you should “undress” to impress.
SPORTY SIDE
Athleisure, the world where casual clothing meets tailoring, has slowly crept onto the fashion radar. Several up-and-coming brands, including Cedric Charlier and Carven, featured this niche trend in their fall collections emphasizing well-tailored, sporty silhouettes with feminine patterns and palettes. Expect to see more of this sporty chic trend as more fashion houses begin to explore the style. Let life be your runway and take some advice from Paige to avoid the biggest fashion fail of the season - lack of imagination. “Everyday, put together your look with a little thought, imagination, and creativity. And remember, nothing looks as good on as an outfit worn with self confidence.”

WHAT’S HOT FOR FALL Advice from Orlando’s Leading Beauty Specialists By Diane Zeise When it comes to the day-to-day, many of us find our beauty routine to be a little outdated. Avoid being boring and take some advice from some of Orlando’s top stylists and makeup artists.

BEAUTY
IT’S VITAL TO CHOOSE A STYLE THAT FITS YOUR BEAUTY ROUTINE, BE IT A 10-MINUTE JOB OR A TWO-HOUR REGIME. THE FOIL CLUB
As far as color goes, the consensus is unanimous, Balayage is the hot hair trend this season! With hand-painted, soft babylights taking over the hair scene, a new color, “bronde” is the frontrunner - not blonde, not brown, but the perfect combination of both! Says Alicia, stylist and owner of Educe Salon. Revi of Privé salon considers this color to be a great transition into fall as bronde is low maintenance and only needs a touch up every 6 months. This new trend is all about low maintenance. Remember to play to your shape. The perfect hairstyle is dependant on the shape of your face. Jessica from J. Christine Salon and Blow Dry Bar agrees with us, saying A hairstyle should enhance your features! It’s best to choose a style that compliments you from all angles. While Revi agrees, she also reminds us that your natural texture and how the hair is styled, including which tools and products that are used, must also be taken into consideration. Finding a good stylist that understands this is vital - not only to perfect a look you’ll love, but also a look that can be easily managed and duplicated at home. In order to maintain your gorgeous locks, it’s vital to choose a style that fits your beauty routine, be it a 10-minute job or a two-hour regime.
FACE TALK
If you’re like most women, your makeup bag is overflowing with products you’ve tried once and never used again. We’ve cut the clutter with straight talk from two experienced makeup artists, Alicia of Glam Dry and Amanda from J. Christine Salon and Blow Dry Bar. Whether you don’t know the difference between an eyelash curler and a spoolie or you’ve been doing your makeup for the past 30 years, they have some tips to take your routine to the next level. Runway trends are an exaggeration of reality. With that being said, we’ve all tried to wear the smokey eye right off the runway. Two trends from this season’s runway that translate best into everyday wear are “strobing” and the classic cat eye. Amanda loves strobing as it is simply highlighting to the next level because now you're playing with light. This technique defines the face without changing the features. Simply add highlight Down the center of the face and under the eyes in a 'triangular' shape while keeping the rest of the skin fresh and dewy. She recommends creams for highlighting and a fluffy brush for blending. Alicia’s a big fan of
the classic cat eye. It can be heavy and dramatic or a subtle variation, depending on the woman and the event. For those of you who have never worn much makeup, Amanda says be true to yourself. Buy products and colors that speak to you. If red lipstick isn't your thing, that's okay. Always be comfortable in your own skin! Alicia has three simple steps to a look in five minutes or less: 1. Mascara!- All day everyday. Opens your eyes, and draws people in! 2. Lipstick!- Whatever shade you like, this wakes up your skin tone gives some life to your look. 3. Eyebrows!- Not a drawn on heavy look you might be thinking of, especially for a woman who never wears makeup! Eyebrows are so important to a woman's face and look. Just a great eyebrow pencil or eyeshadow applied with an angle brush will do. Have a professional show you the right shade and technique using light feathery strokes to avoid drawing them on.
OFF THE SHELF
Picking a product to enhance your look is always a little daunting. Our stylist friends took some of the work out of the task by offering their “can’t live withouts.” I absolutely could not live without my Privé Volumizing Dry Shampoo. Not only does it cleanse the scalp and hair without using any water, but its herbal blend of ginkgo biloba, green tea and soy add incredible volume and texture to help support almost any style. Truly a ‘don’t leave home without it’ product! Revi, Privé Salon Oribe Dry texturizing spray!!! It gives my hair that fabulous second day look with tons of movement and texture. It also works as an amazing dry shampoo. - Jessica, J. Christine Salon and Blow Dry Bar 29 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
Right now at Educe Salon we can’t keep the new "Wonder Worker" by Shu Uemura on our shelves. It’s a foundation spray that tames frizz, hydrates, smooths, and provides humidity protection, which is a must in Florida. It truly is a wonder worker! Alicia, Educe Salon This may sound crazy, but hear me out. My new favorite product on the market is L'Oreal's Infallible Pro Matte foundation. Because I worked for MAC cosmetics for many years, I had an opportunity to be exposed to my fare share of skin products. What I love about the L'Oreal foundation is that it is an 18 hour wear matte finish foundation that I can use on my bridal clients, photoshoots, and backstage for runway. This product is exceptional and delivers great results. - Amanda, J. Christine Salon and Blow Dry Bar Nude lipstick! Switching from summer to fall can be as easy as changing your lipstick. THE MATHEMATICS OF BEAUTY
WOULD YOU MEASURE UP IF BEAUTY WAS ONLY

segment C. These equal, A/B - B/C = 1.618. This is known as the golden ratio of the face. No matter what race, time period or culture a human face comes from, this is the universal standard of a beautiful face. It may surprise you to know that many golden ratios exist, so more than one golden ratio may appear in a beautiful face as well. Vertically there are ten golden ratios that according to Dr. Marquardt a beautiful face must have.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but what does that truly mean? Do we all see beauty differently? What exactly makes a woman beautiful? In order to answer these questions, let’s take a closer look: Dr. Stephen Marquardt studied genders and beauty in different time periods and cultures. While doing so, he invented a mathematical equation of the human face, known as the Marquardt Beauty Mask. This is also known as the Phi makeup of the human face. Before you run off to break your mirrors or analyze your own physical makeup, remember that while we’re fascinated with this beauty solving equation, it’s merely a mapping of the mathematical definition of beauty - we hold fast to the stance that beauty is more than what’s on the outside!
1. Between the eyes to nose flair and nose to base 2. The eyes to the top of the nostril to the center of the lips 3. The eyes to the base of the nose to the bottom of the lips 4. The eyes to the center of the lips to the bottom of chin 5. The nose flair to the bottom of the lips to the bottom of the chin 6. The nose flair to the top of the lips to the bottom of the chin 7. The top of the lips to the bottom of the lips to the bottom of chin 8. The top of the lips to the center of the lips to the bottom of the lips
Let’s break it down. To find the symmetry of the perfect face you must begin by dividing a line, therefore the ratio of the entire line A to the larger segment B is the same as the ratio of the larger segment B and to the smaller

9. The arc of the eyebrows to the top of the eyes to the bottom of the eyes 10. The arc of the eyebrows to the top of the lips to the bottom of the chin After recognizing the vertical ratios, horizontally the golden ratio is seen by aligning: 1. The side of the face to the outside of the eyes to the center of the pupils 2. The side of the face to the outside of the iris’ to the inside of the eyes and the inside of the eyebrows 3. lips to the bottom of the lips. 6. The head height to the head width With artists spending years painting the perfect face, cosmetic surgeons striving to create the perfect face and fashion magazines telling us what the standards of a perfect face are, the mathematical answer is finally here. Throughout all of the golden ratios being documented and measured and the blueprint of the perfect face being studied, the irrefutable answer to the painstaking question, “What is physical beauty?” is simply symmetry. According to the numbers, a truly beautiful face has noticeable symmetry. And who are we to argue with mathematics?
THROUGHOUT ALL OF THE GOLDEN RATIOS BEING DOCUMENTED AND MEASURED AND THE BLUEPRINT OF THE PERFECT FACE BEING STUDIED, THE IRREFUTABLE ANSWER TO THE PAINSTAKING QUESTION, “WHAT IS PHYSICAL BEAUTY?” IS SIMPLY SYMMETRY. 4. The side of the face to the inside of the eye to the inside of the opposite eye and the inside of the eyebrow 5. The side of the face to the center of the face to the outside of the opposite eye 6. The side of face to the inside of the opposite eye to the opposite side of the face There are even more golden ratios if you view the eyes, nose, and mouth closeup. These include: 1. The outside of the eyes to the nose flair and the center of the pupils to the top of the nose flair to the bottom of the nose 2. The center of the pupils to the bridge of the nose and the center of the nostrils 3. The inside of the eyes and the width of the nose to the inside of the nostrils 4. The width of the mouth to the Cupid’s bow 5. The bottom of the nose to the top of the
Of course this is only the unfeeling, equational measure of physical beauty. Everyone has flaws, and no one face looks the same. You might not fit the Marquardt Beauty Mask perfectly, but if it’s perfection you’re striving for, contouring your makeup will give the illusion of a flawless match. Wear your symmetry well but most importantly, be confident. Knowing who you are and finding comfort in your own skin and inner beauty will always outshine any golden ratio.

While some of us may not perfectly match The Marquardt Beauty Mask, we can take solice knowing that the definition of beauty differs when we travel outside the western world.

WE’RE NOT THE ONLY ONES sporting body positivity! Mauritanian girls are often sent to camps where they are encouraged to eat more than 15,000 calories a day in order to make a beautiful bride as the weight of one’s wife determines male social status.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT
FIFTH HARMONY By Courtney Caggiano
These five girls, who have now become known internationally as Fifth Harmony, got their shot to stardom in 2012 by charming the judges and audience of The X Factor; after auditioning as soloists for the show’s second season, the young singers formed a collective group that had five times the power of a single singer. X Factor judge and founder Simon Cowell saw the potential of this girl group, sending them through to the Top 12 of the show, enabling them to finish in third place.
Fall Fashion would not be complete without the trendiest tracks for your playlists, and one of today’s most fashionable music groups takes girl power to new dimensions. The girls of Fifth Harmony are the ones to watch when it comes to music and fashion trends, and with their latest album, Reflection, these five singers show us that confidence is always in style.
Individually, Camila Cabello, Lauren Jauregui, Ally Brooke, DinahJane Hansen, and Normani Hamilton have the potential and vocal prowess to shine alone as solo stars, but together they discovered that five could do what one alone could not.
The X Factor gave the girls of Fifth Harmony the edge they needed in the pop music world, as it enabled them to rapidly gain a wide

Soon after the release of Better Together, Fifth Harmony took their talents to nationwide performances and television appearances, including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and went on to win the award for “Breakout Artist of The Year” at the 2014 Radio Disney Music Awards, as well as the “Artist To Watch” award at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

On Reflection, the girls vocal ability received even greater spotlight, thanks to a stunning team of producers who previously created hit after hit for stars like Rihanna, Katy Perry, Iggy Azalea, and Nicki Minaj. This production lineup allowed each of the Fifth Harmony girls to show off her unique genre of singing, and their layered harmonies crafted a synergy of R&B, pop, and hip-hop.
TO INSPIRE YOUNG WOMEN TO LOVE THE ASPECTS
This synergy comes from the originality of the vocals of the five girls, which range widely in flair and style. Lauren’s mature vocal range combines fiercely with Camila’s raw edge, while Normani’s bluesy style and Dinah’s R&B vocals add a smooth touch to Ally’s lively energy.

These awards and accolades pale in comparison to the appreciation the group has received from international audiences. Their singles have been widely received all over the world, and they have become one of the most popular music female music groups of the decade. The Geisha facial treatment is being labeled an alternative to Botox injections and uses droppings from a nightingale bird, which are collected on the Japanese island of Kyushu. The droppings are mixed with rice bran and water to create a facial mask that is applied to the skin and left to soak into the pores for one hour. The droppings are said to contain enzymes, which break down the dead skin and repair complexions that have been damaged by the sun and aging. If getting pooped on by a bird is good luck, then who knows what rubbing your entire face in it will do! I, for one, don’t intend to find out.
I love a good beer bath in the morning!
The Birds? Yes, that is my favorite film. Why do you ask?
Snooki
Jersey Shore fan or not, we all know who Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi is. If you were a fan of MTV’s popular reality show, then you would also know that Snooki has a slight obsession with cats. From dressing up as a leopard for Halloween to owning a seemingly endless supply of animal print accessories, it’s no wonder Snooki also found a way to incorporate cats into her beauty regime! In her book, Confessions of a Guidette, Snooki applaudes the beauty benefits of cat litter. Snooki mixes the rocks with water and uses it as a pore cleansing exfoliant which also doubles as a clay mask. A quick Google search will show you that Snooki isn’t the only one who swears by this unusual practice. As for the benefits of it, you’ll have to decide that for yourself. The most important thing is just make sure your cat doesn’t mistake your face for her litter box.
Oh yeah... It works. Can’t you tell?
Demi Moore
This next bizarre regime sounds like it came straight out of the pages of a Stephen King novel, but Demi Moore stands firmly by it. While on The David Letterman Show promoting her film Flawless, the then 45-year-old actress revealed that she is a fan of leech therapy to “detoxify my blood.” Ancient Egyptian doctors once considered leeches a cure-all and they are sometimes still used today in plastic and reconstructive surgery. The leeches release a little enzyme when they are biting down, which prevents your blood from clotting, allowing the worms to feed until they are full. Preparation for Moore’s therapy involves shaving the hair on your body and soaking yourself in a turpentine bath. After that, it’s blood sucking time! Moore is convinced the therapy works and says she will be returning for more sessions. “I’m going back,” says Moore. “I only got four leeches and I feel a bit cheated.” If you have a vampire fetish, leech therapy just might be beauty treatment for you! 45 STYLETOME.COM

THE
BEAST Built in California, USA, Rezvani Motors
On the road or track, the Beast proves to be one of the most responsive and best handling cars in the world.
Born on the track and designed for the road, the Rezvani Beast gives new meaning to the lightweight, high-performance sports car, mixed with world class styling. Featuring a carbon fiber construction, weighing only 1,650 lbs, and reaching 60 mph in just 2.7 seconds, every inch of Beast was built with the driver in mind — raw, pure, and powerful.
The interior features carbon fiber seats, a carbon fiber steering wheel that weighs in at less than a Formula 1 steering wheel (300 grams), and Apple CarPlay— a first ever in the segment.
drops the curtain on the lightweight 500-horsepower Beast supercar. Hitting the streets in June of 2015.
PURE PERFORMANCE In an age where many supercars rely on electronic aids, the Beast gives control back to the driver. Using a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine featuring a crankdriven Rotrex supercharger and turbocharger, and a manual gearbox (optional sequential automatic), Beast sends 500 horsepower to the rear wheels. Weighing in at a featherlight 1,650 pounds, Rezvani engineers were able to keep the car as light as possible using advanced materials such as carbon fiber, and a carbon steel chassis from the Ariel Atom 3 that was significantly upgraded to be even more rigid. To 60 mph, Beast can manage in just 2.7 seconds, on to a top speed of 165 mph. “We really wanted to get people to enjoy driving again,” said Founder and CEO Ferris Rezvani. “By limiting as much electronic interference as we could, we were able to allow the driver to feel every inch of the road at their fingertips.” Rezvani used lightweight aluminum forged wheels wrapped in front 235/35/19 and rear 295/30/19 tires to further enhance performance and lightness.
INSPIRED DESIGN Under the direction of Rezvani Motors, awardwinning automotive designer Samir Sadikhov was able to create the Beast’s stunning and aerodynamic look. The very definition of an aggressive, open-top supercar, the Beast uses minimalist surfaces and low-friction carbon fiber body panels to allow for the ultimate performance proportions and maximum downforce at high speeds. These design techniques were introduced by Co-Founder Kam Hosn at the Global Lightweight Vehicle Manufacturing conference in Detroit on April 14th, 2015. Rezvani used advanced 3D-printing techniques to create the unique shapes of the headlight casing, taillight casing, and mirrors. Windshield is optional. PURCHASE The Beast is available for purchase starting at $165,000. Current build estimates are between 8-12 weeks. Beast is currently available for public viewing at the Rezvani Motors showroom: 2920 Red Hill Ave. Costa Mesa, CA., 92626

4 CREATIVE TRENDS FOR THE COCKTAIL CONNOISSEUR By Diane Zeise
The month of September is alive with the buzz of Fall Fashion Week and the release of the upcoming season’s hottest trends. And where do you expect to wear your gorgeous new Dolce & Gabbana cocktail dress? As always, we take pride in preparing you for that upcoming outing so check out our list of some of the trendiest cocktails to sport while rocking your newest wardrobe additions.
1. Bespoke Barware: You tailor your clothes to ensure a right fit, what’s so crazy about tailoring your barware to accentuate your favorite cocktail’s best features? Your bartender is becoming more than just a master mixologist these days. Alex Kratena, head bartender and custom-cocktail creator at The Artesian Bar in The Langham Hotel in London says “I see a cocktail glass like a stage, and I think about serving cocktails as telling stories… at the same time, I can manipulate how the glass works. The vessel not only holds the liquid, but it effects how it is perceived by the guest’s palate.” Whether driven by practicality or creativity, custom cocktails in made to order vessels are a trend worth trying. 2. Culinary Cocktails: When your drink arrives in a solid state your first thought may be to send it back and request your usual. But much like the runway, cocktails are beginning to focus on theatrics as part of the experience. The Ginger Cocktail is a drink made famous by The Aviary in Chicago, IL. Once you order this particular cocktail, your ginger arrives first as a solid, beautifully garnished with various ingredients like herbs and lime. With a sidecar of premium vodka and an iced lemon grass stick for stirring, this work of art becomes a sweet and spicy cocktail that hits all the right notes. If ginger doesn’t tickle your fancy, try ordering scotch blended with honey flavored Bärenyäger (should the bartender have it readily available). This drink comes alive when a riesling poached pear flash frozen in liquid nitrogen is dropped into the mix right before consumption. 3. The Garnish Game: Extravagant garnishes are making our list with painstakingly constructed accents to your formerly unimpressive drink. Create a conversation starter with a pirate ship shaped garnish floating atop your Son of a Beach ocean blue cocktail. 4. The Drink with a Personal Touch: A hot trend in the world of spirits is personality-based cocktail creations. Instead of ordering a simple rum and coke or that tired Sex on the Beach you’ve had a hundred times, allow the bartender to tailor your cocktail to your tastes and personality. Describe what you like and let the bartender surprise you with a custom cocktail. Whether you consider yourself adventurous or not, these four trends are worth exploring the next time you’re feeling a little dauntless.

“Miami is a lively and vibrant hub of beautiful beaches, dazzling sunshine, entertaining culture and seemingly endless fun.”
At the southeastern tip of Florida is one of the sunshine state’s—and the world’s—most highly desired vacation spots. Aptly referred to as The Magic City, Miami is a lively and vibrant hub of beautiful beaches, dazzling sunshine, entertaining culture and seemingly endless fun. In the heart of the Mid-Beach area are The Palms Hotel & Spa and Circa 39 Hotel. During a long weekend in this beloved city, I had the opportunity to visit these unique sister properties and experience what they—and Miami—all have to offer. Surrounded by gorgeous neighborhoods overflowing with new adventures and exciting venues, The Palms Hotel and Circa 39
proved to be a perfect home base to explore Miami Beach and enjoy some much needed R&R at two of the city’s most up and coming resorts. With a location that’s just 12 miles from the Miami International Airport and several minutes from the festive enticement of South Beach, the Palms Hotel was a picturesque haven of serene offerings inspired by the very nature we were surrounded by. Located on a private stretch of reserved beach, the perfect placement of the property means guests have the option of choosing to stay in a stunning oceanfront view guestroom just like the one I was given. Floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows in my room overlooked The Palms’ gardens, an expansive shoreline and the magnificent Atlantic Ocean. I sought out a small bite to eat not long after my arrival and soon found myself seated at Essensia Restaurant located on property. Long after my savory gourmet burger had settled and the ever-smiling staff had taken my plate away, I continued to stay right where I was. Frozen in a peaceful moment that I wasn’t ready to let go of. That moment of sitting on Essencia’s outdoor patio while breathing in the freshest air and taking in the beauty of the luscious green grounds around me. When I was finally able to move from fartoo-comfortable spot, I decided it was time to catch some sun by the pool instead. Large and heated, The Palms Hotel’s outdoor swimming pool was a pure tribute to island paradise. With private cabanas, elegant lounge chairs and speedy food services from The Tiki Bar, there was no where else I would’ve rather been in that precious moment then sunbathing and relaxing by the crystal blue waters. As evening came around, I met up with my travel companions at Essensia bar to start our trip off the right way—also known as cocktails. Seated on a large covered terrace with plush sofas and armchairs, we enjoyed a refreshing round of conscious cocktails and 100% sustainable, organic and biodynamic wine. After cocktail hour, I had the pleasure of comparing my lunch at Essensia Restaurant to evening dining at the establishment. While my lunch was absolutely scrumptious, dinner proved to be an equally memorable meal that catered to all the senses. Offering a seasonal, farm to table selection of wholesome global cuisine, Essensia delivered simplicity and sophisticated “green” dining through a menu brimming with fresh fare using exceptional flavors from local, seasonal, sustainable and organic ingredients. 51 STYLETOME.COM
Located just 321 km from Cuba, Miami is a city that has been permeated with Cuban influence and flair. My companions and I set out to explore the various ways Cuba is reflected throughout the city with a food tour through Little Havana. With an intimate group of friends and several strangers (who quickly became new friends), we explored this charming Miami neighborhood with our Miami Culinary Tours guide, Mirka Harris. For two and a half hours, Harris introduced us to the rich history of the area as we tasted our way through the best Cuban bites in Little Havana. From the Medianoche Cuban Sandwich at El Pub Restaurant and handmade Chicken Empanadas at Exquisito Restaurant to Guava Pastelito at Yisell Bakery and freshly squeezed Guarapo Juice from Los Pinarenos Fruteria, the culinary tour was a foodie’s dream come true. Between our food stops we met local artists, witnessed the craft of cigar rolling and took a peek at the legendary Domino Park. With Harris’ passionate enthusiasm guiding us, we learned about Little Havana’s culture and heritage, visited family-owned restaurants, discovered hidden culinary gems and admired authentic Cuban cuisine and the stories behind those who make it. Of course the only way to end any meal is with dessert so our tour ended with Azucar Ice Cream at Mamey Ice Cream where we left feeling both full and fulfilled by our culinary and cultural afternoon in Little Havana. After two luxurious nights at The Palms Hotel, it was finally time to explore Circa 39 Hotel. Newly renovated from top to bottom, The Palms Hotel’s sister property embraces a funky mix of styles, from modern beachside simplicity to loud, tropical decor and everything inbetween. With a gorgeous pool, charming courtyard, cozy guestrooms and more, it would’ve been very easy to remain on property for the duration of my stay and continue to have a wonderful weekend in The Magic City. However, the many neighborhoods of Miami were calling my name and reminding me that there was still much left to see. For my companions and I, our explorations brought us to Wynwood Brewing Company in Miami’s Wynwood Arts District. There we had the pleasure of stopping by Miami's first craft production brewery for a tour and tasting of fresh, delicious and creative beers. The Wynwood Arts District is appropriately spotlighted as one of the city’s most up-and-coming, trendy neighborhoods. The area is full of local art galleries and covered in the captivating

Our guide, Ryan the Wheelbarrow, led us up and down the vibrant streets while pointing out breathtaking pieces of graffiti art and effortlessly recalling fascinating details about the history and culture of street graffiti and their artist. On my last day, it seemed only appropriate to end my stay in Miami in the same way it started -- with cocktails of course! This time we traded in The Palms Hotel’s Essencia Bar for Circa 39’s WunderBar where Food & Beverage Director, Juanita Butler, led us in a cocktail demonstration and sampling of well-crafted spirits built around rum. As we laughed and chatted around the bar, tropical drinks in hand, I couldn’t believe our trip had already come to an end. We had only just begun and there was still so much left to be discovered! As I quickly learned, Miami

Plan your next visit to begin that journey of discovering “more” such as more options for first rate dining. Consider dining under the stars on the outdoor terrace of South Beach’s Kilma where you’ll experience a blend of the most original global recipes together with the freshest prime ingredients. For a more casual dining adventure, swing by the funky, eclectic R House Wynwood or the new SpanishMediterranean tapas restaurant, Cena By Menchy. If there’s one thing Miami taught me, it’s that you’ll be at a loss for choices when it comes to dining no matter what cuisine you’re craving. Perhaps the “more” you desire is just the chance to sit back, relax and enjoy a stay at a beautiful resort in this breathtaking city. That’s where the Palms Hotel and Circa 39 Hotel come in. HISTORY IN THE MAKING: What everyone (and we mean everyone) should know about the recent Supreme Court rulings… By Mark NeJame
Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley
The Constitution guarantees a right to same-sex marriage and Obamacare is here to stay. The Supreme Court had quite a Term, and the last week of June produced two tremendously important rulings. We all have our opinions on universal healthcare and same-sex marriage, and the Constitution guarantees that we are entitled to voice them, however these rulings must be understood before supported or criticized. Supreme Court of the United States (“SCOTUS”) opinions are lengthy, complex and smattered with legal nuances, which complicate
a Medicaid expansion, which casts a wider net of coverage to lower income individuals and families. States cannot be forced to participate in the Medicaid expansion – it is elective; approximately half the country has adopted this expansion.
the general idea behind the decision. So we’ll dispose of (most of) the complexities for now and get down to the basics, because a basic understanding is better than no understanding at all.
program (HealthCare.gov) was illegal. The specific language debated was this: "enrolled in through an Exchange established by the State under 1311.” Opponents of the law argued the legislative intent clearly allowed for subsidies under state exchange programs only, while proponents urged that a “plain meaning reading” of the statute would eviscerate its overall purpose and intent, which was to provide quality and affordable healthcare to lawful permanent residents of the United States.
PATIENT PROTECTION & AFFORDABLE CARE ACT (“ACA” OR “OBAMACARE”) Often referred to as “ObamaCare,” the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was signed into law by President Obama in 2010 and has been recognized as the most significant overhaul to the U.S. healthcare system since Medicare and Medicaid. As would be expected, the constitutionality of this federal statute was challenged, and in 2012 SCOTUS upheld the law as a valid exercise of Congress’s taxing power (the subsidies were declared “tax credits”). There is a limitation, though: the ACA provides for
Not to be discouraged, opponents of the ACA then challenged the language of the law, claiming that, as written, the obtainment of healthcare via the federal exchange
On June 25, 2015, the Supreme Court agreed with the proponents. In a 6-3 decision, SCOTUS held that government-issued subsidies were legal on a state and federal level. This is really interesting, guys! The Court essentially deviated from the “plain meaning reading” of the statute and went 56 STYLETOME.COM
a step further in interpreting what Congress meant when it drafted ObamaCare; this is rarely done. Courts do not generally “read into” or infer what the author intended. But here’s the logic: if the language of the text was interpreted literally, and those federallyissued healthcare subsidies were declared illegal, millions of individuals would lose their healthcare tax subsidies and the (most likely healthier) people would opt not to purchase individual insurance, which would
send insurance premiums through the roof (since there are less healthy people in the pool). This is the oft quoted “death spiral” Congress intended to avoid: "Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not to destroy them," Chief Justice Roberts wrote in the long and complex majority opinion. "If at all possible, we must interpret the Act in a way that is consistent with the former, and avoids the latter…. In this instance,” he wrote, “the context and structure of the act compel us to depart from what would otherwise be the most natural reading of the pertinent statutory phrase.” (Life Lesson: a few words can create a whole mess of legal problems! Hire a good lawyer to prevent said messes. Trust.)
IN THE KNOW
Let’s break down some key points of ObamaCare: 1. Americans Getting Health Care Through Their Employer: Under the Affordable Care Act, all Americans are required to have insurance. Companies must either provide their workers with health insurance or deem that it would be cheaper to subsidize them and let them get health insurance through the state. There are some additional protections such as no limits or restrictions on benefits and no annual limits, to name a few. 2. Americans Receiving Health Care Coverage Through Medicare: The ACA will continue to provide protections and benefits to seniors who receive coverage through Medicare. 3. Individual Policy Holders: ObamaCare requires all U.S. citizens to have healthcare insurance. Of course, if you already have private insurance, the healthcare reform will have little impact on you. Your rates may shift slightly, and your coverage will have added protections.
up to 6 million Americans. And then there’s that employer mandate, which requires large employers to provide healthcare for its employees. This provision is unpopular in general, and has caused many layoffs so businesses can avoid falling within the purview of the mandate.
Four key principles were discussed as to why the fundamental right to marry applies to same-sex couples:
Currently, the campaign trail is hot and heavy and the ACA is sure to be a huge ticket item for debate. Efforts to repeal the law have been thwarted so far (in late July, the Senate voted down a GOP attempt), with each party remaining loyal to its position on the matter. Senator Ted Cruz has called it “an exercise in meaningless political theater”. Regardless, as we’ve all learned from House of Cards, drastic measures will undoubtedly create enemies, but are ultimately rather effective.
2. Same-sex couples have the right to intimate association. This intimate association includes marriage, not just sexual activity.
Phew. The next one is a little less complicated… SAME-SEX MARRIAGES ARE DECLARED CONSTITUTIONAL On June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court held that same-sex couples can legally marry no
1. The right to personal choice regarding marriage is inherent in the concept of individual autonomy.
3. Same-sex couples have children and families and are entitled to rights relating to child rearing, procreation, and education. 4. Finally, marriage was declared a keystone of America’s social order. The Court found that to prevent same-sex couples from marrying stigmatized them and put them at odds with society, denied them countless benefits of marriage and introduced instability. These key factors have everything to do with constitutional rights and very little to do with religious freedom. In fact, SCOTUS reaffirms the protection of the
“UNDER THE CONSTITUTION, SAME-SEX COUPLES SEEK IN MARRIAGE THE SAME LEGAL TREATMENT AS OPPOSITE-SEX COUPLES, AND IT WOULD DISPARAGE THEIR CHOICES AND DIMINISH THEIR PERSONHOOD TO DENY THEM THIS RIGHT.” 4. Uninsured Americans: All uninsured Americans will still have the option to buy health insurance through the state or federal exchanges. Those Americans who cannot afford coverage can get a federal subsidy. Additionally, insurance companies may not turn people away for preexisting conditions. 5. Small Business Owners: Due to their income bracket, truly-small businesses have always been in a bad space when it comes to providing health insurance for their employees. While health care reform will not solve this problem, it does offer more options for employers wishing to provide coverage to their employees. It’s worth noting that ObamaCare does not tax businesses making under $250k, but does guarantee coverage to business owners and their employees.1 And voila, like it or not, we are one step closer to universal healthcare. Now, this is certainly not a utopian circumstance. Congress has a lot of work to do. Since its enactment, the ACA has undergone 51 significant changes, according to the Galen Institute. And remember that Medicaid expansion? Well, it’s a bit problematic. Since states are able to reject the Medicaid expansion, it has created a coverage gap, which could include 1
matter where they live. This one was close! In a 5-4 decision, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, who has authored all SCOTUS’s decisions expanding gay rights, declared the ban on gay marriage a violation of due process and that the fundamental right to marry applied to same-sex couples. “Under the Constitution, same-sex couples seek in marriage the same legal treatment as opposite-sex couples, and it would disparage their choices and diminish their personhood to deny them this right.” The story is this: two men married in Maryland, but resided in Ohio. They obtained their marriage license in Maryland, but the Ohio State Registry would not recognize it. The couple filed a lawsuit, alleging that the state was discriminating against same-sex couples who lawfully married out-of-state, and that the Ohio law provided “a marriage solemnized outside of Ohio is valid in Ohio if it is valid where solemnized." The case found its way to the Supreme Court, who hinged its ruling on the fundamental right to marry by way of the 14th Amendment, which requires a State to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-State.
www.obamacarefacts.com 57 STYLETOME.COM
First Amendment, stating that religious groups are free to continue to advocate for their traditional beliefs. You see, the courts are forbidden from interpreting religious doctrine; this is a concept known as the “evangelical abstention doctrine.” SCOTUS leaves the interpretation of marriage itself alone, and focuses on extending the fundamental right to marry by relying on well-known legal precedent. The dissenting Justices remain nervous, calling the decision a “threat to American democracy” which “usurps the constitutional right of people to decide whether to keep or alter traditional marriage”; the issue dances closely around religious interpretation, a danger zone for social conservatives. So that wraps up our learning session for this month. It’s a mouthful, I know, but this will be in textbooks (ebooks?) long past our time here. These cases truly exhibit why our Constitution is a living, breathing document. Perhaps proof that it can evolve after all…

“TOO EXTREME” EXTREME WORKOUT? Much like fashion, different fitness trends
go in and out of style. Over the past several years we’ve taken spin/cycling classes, Zumba, CrossFit/90x-style workouts and boxing for fitness! The newest fitness trend is S10 training, a new workout style that stands for sub10, because the goal is to focus on lowering your body fat below 10 percent (women are encouraged to strive for below 15 percent) rather than focusing on the numbers on a scale. What does a standard workout at S10 look like? Each 60-minute session begins with a warm-up and follows with what Stephen Cheuk, owner and creator of S10 Training, calls the “6-1225.” According to Nicole Catanese’s “The Body Shrinking Workout” article published in Harper’s Bazaar, a typical workout for a threeday-a-week client: On day 1, six Romanian deadlifts, straight into 12 push-ups, then 25 lunges; on day 2, six sumo deadlifts, 12 weighted body rows, and 25 hip raises; and on day 3, six hanging knee raises, 12 jackknives on suspension cables, and 25 V sit-ups. Each sequence is repeated three times the first week, four times the second, working up to five times during the third week. Each session finishes with 15-minutes of high-intensity heavy lifting. In addition to the training program, Cheuk encourages his clients to eat clean, organic meals consisting of one palm-size serving of protein, two handfuls of greens and three teaspoons of fat. Experts agree concentrating on lowering body fat is an excellent way to get fit, but argue that going lower than 13 percent body fat can potentially create health risks, including hormonal changes and cessation of menstruation. Cheuk stands by his training method telling Harper’s Bazaar’s Catanese, "From an aesthetic standpoint—which, let's be honest, is why most people go to the gym—10
for men and 15 percent for women is where you start to see a lot of definition. Our niche market is body transformation.”
Striving for less than 10 percent body fat may be unrealistic for the average person, but Cheuk’s training is grounded in a natural, holistic approach that encourages stepping away from the scales and instead focusing on the loss of body fat. Like life, fitness is all about finding the proper balance and moderation for yourself. Incorporating aspects of Cheuk’s routine and following his clean eating plan can only bring about positive results, even if you don't reach the “ideal” amount of body fat.
Cheuk’s resumé speaks for itself and his training routine has proven effective. He has worked as a personal trainer at several of New York City’s elite gyms, including Equinox and Gotham Gym, and has trained professional athletes, celebrities, Alexander Wang’s design team, and military elites. The rest of the S10 team, which includes a competitive power lifter, an ultra-marathoner and running coach, and former college football player, have equally impressive resumés and extensive backgrounds in the fitness and training fields.
As always, check with your doctor before starting any new diet and/or exercise regimen. 58

REPROGRAM YOUR BODY The Five Day Diet By Kourtney Destefano So, you’ve been putting off going
to the gym and find yourself desperately trying to lose weight the week of a big event? It’s no surprise that people turn to fasting as a last resort to shed a few extra pounds. Drastic calorie reduction, while controversial, is extremely popular for those seeking a “quick fix” weight loss regimen. This technique has long been considered dangerous and extreme. But did you know that excessively cutting calories can actually have positive long-term effects? According to a new study featured in the journal Cell Metabolism, researchers at the University of Southern California found that a calorie-restricted diet mimicking fasting for eight days a month promoted regeneration in multiple systems and extended longevity. The diet, known as the “periodic fasting mimicking diet,” was first tested on mice and then a small, randomized group. 19 participants ate

the mimicking diet of less than half of their normal caloric intake featuring about 12% protein, 44% carbs, and 44% fat, while 18 of the participants ate a normal diet. Those on the mimicking diet consumed large amounts of vegetable soup, kale crackers and chamomile tea. The experimental group ate the diet for five days in a row every month over the course of three months straight, and ate whatever they wanted for the rest of the time.

After the study ended, the researchers found that those who participated in the fasting mimicking diet had lower risk factors than their control group counterparts when it came to aging, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. The mice that were fed the fasting mimicking diet also experienced overall better health and a prolonged lifespan, as well as positive factors including reduced inflammatory diseases and cancer, and improved learning and memory. Petronella Ravenshear, a nutritional therapist, told the Telegraph that the diet is less

stress on the body than complete fasting. “It supplies most of the carbohydrates in the form of vegetables, which are packed with phytonutrients and minerals and positively good for us, rather than grain-derived carbohydrates, which don’t supply much except sugar,” Ravenshear said. Ultimately, the low-calorie and low-protein diet had an overall positive impact on health and aging-related factors, with no major side effects. According to lead researcher Valter Longo, director of the USC Longevity Institute, the idea behind the diet is to decrease a hormone known as IGF-I, which promotes aging and makes you more vulnerable to cancer. Longo described the process as a way to “reboot” the body by cleaning out damaged cells and regenerating new ones. “It’s about reprogramming the body so it enters a slower aging mode, but also rejuvenating it through stem cell-based regeneration,” said Longo. “It’s not a typical diet because it isn’t something you need to stay on.” Longo and the rest of the research team hope to conduct larger studies involving the diet and get the plan FDA approved, which is a rigorous process. “This is arguably the first non-chronic preclinically and clinically tested antiaging and healthspan-promoting intervention shown to work and to be very feasible as a doctor or dietician-supervised intervention,” said Longo. The team believes normal dieters could try the fasting mimicking diet every three to six months or even as often as once every few weeks, depending on a doctor’s recommendation. Because this diet is so drastic, it is highly recommended that you consult a doctor before giving it a try.

2.2 liters.
While the amount of water required daily is relevant to the size, weight and activity level of the individual, this number, this daunting 2.2 liters is the recommended daily intake of water for the average human. It’s safe to say that with a number as high as this, many of us find ourselves falling more than a little short of our hydration goals. So, what’s the problem with drinking “a little” less water? The dangers of skipping that refreshing glass of H2O may have you heading for the Zephyr Hills and not the Coors Mountains as previously planned. The amount of water you drink directly correlates with susceptibility to health
problems. Without the proper water intake, studies show that you’re more prone to kidney stones, colon and urinary cancer and heart attacks. In his book The Water Secret, Dr. Howard Murad discusses studies he conducted wherein he found that the amount of calories your body burns while at rest is dependant on how hydrated your metabolic system is. The more hydrated your body, the more efficient and quickly your metabolism works. Dr. Murad also found that with the proper amount of water, your body will slow down the aging process while revitalising the body, brightening the skin and filling in lines and wrinkles.
Studies also found that you eat more and are more prone to irritability, confusion, fits of anger and depression when even mildly dehydrated! A 2011 study conducted by the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College London found that without enough water, the human brain actually shrinks away from the skull, forcing you to work and think harder to complete routine tasks. The study found that while dehydrated participants were able to complete the same tasks as their well-hydrated counterparts, the rate at which they were able to problem solve slowed significantly. Drinking water rehydrates the brain and restores it to its natural size.
When in the world will I have enough time to drink all that liquid in one day?
THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE.
Even after discussing the dangers of not drinking that 2.2 liters a day, the question still remains: when in the world will I have enough time to drink all that liquid in one day? The answer is simple. Fear not, we have put our well-hydrated brains to use to find alternative ways to make the H2O cut. 1. CHIA SEEDS: These powerful little omega-3 rich seeds not only reduce cravings and lower blood pressure, but are known for their ability to soak up and retain liquid. Soak your Chia in water before utilizing them in oatmeal, smoothies or baked goods for a powerful punch to start the day. 2. COCONUT WATER: This refreshing liquid is a cool alternative to plain ol’ H20. It naturally contains fluid-balancing minerals, potassium and sodium, making it an isotonic liquid. That’s right, you heard us. Full of electrolytes, coconut water contains the same salt concentration as your blood and cells, making it the perfect post-workout treat. As an added bonus, the potassium in coconut
water additionally helps to naturally regulate blood pressure. 3. FRUITS AND VEGETABLES: Your parents were definitely right about one thing - It’s important to not neglect your fruit and veggie intake. While most of these healthy foods have a relatively high water content, when substituting for a glass of water, be sure to reach for those with a water-weight content of 90% or higher. Cucumbers, grapefruit, tomatoes, blueberries, watermelon, lettuce, spinach, strawberry and zucchini are a few fruits and veggies that can help to keep you hydrated throughout the day. 4. MEAT: Carnivores rejoice! Much to our surprise, meat is made up of almost 60% water. Lean-ground hamburger, chicken and other tasty meats can aid in your hydration quest. BurgerFi for lunch? Yes please! 5. COFFEE AND TEA: Kathleen Zelman, MPH, RD, LD of the WebMD Weight Loss Clinic says that coffee and tea “act as 63 STYLETOME.COM
diuretics, so even if you’re getting water, you’re also pulling a little extra fluid from your body because of the caffeine.” Not only do our caffeinated friends aid in digestion, but they’re a comparable alternative when a glass of water just won’t do at eight A.M. Don’t believe us? We’ll be discussing the benefits of coffee in a later issue. If you’re not a fan of bland but these five water-alternatives aren’t your “cup of tea” try adding a hint of mint or a little lemon zest to your H2O. And remember, nothing can fully replace a tall glass of water, however, a strawberry, spinach salad paired with a coconut, watermelon (see what we did there?) spritzer is a great way to hydrate. Still having trouble hydrating? Talk to your doctor about the dangers of dehydration and more ways to hydrate safely. And remember to discuss with him or her before making any extreme dietary change.

Jessup Moot Court and served as the Executive Research Editor for the Florida Journal of International Law.
Amal Laassel focuses her practice in the areas of Civil Litigation and Immigration Law.
After graduating from UF Law, Amal joined a mid-size personal injury law firm in Ocala, Florida, where she had the unique opportunity to work alongside one of Florida’s first Board Certified Civil Trial lawyers. That mentoring opportunity provided her invaluable courtroom experience and furthered the development of her legal skills.
Amal Laassel focuses her practice in the areas of Civil Litigation and Immigration Law. Amal hails from Marrakesh, Morocco, where she lived until her teenage years. As a young girl, she remembers her father regularly discussing politics and international affairs at home. These were constant topics of conversation which set the stage for the development of her interest in politics and the law, and fueled her desire to study abroad.
In 2009, Amal moved back to Orlando and joined one of the largest insurance defense firms in the country. While there, Amal handled complex premises liability and general liability actions on behalf of Fortune 500 Companies and large insurance carriers, including the largest retailer in the world. In 2013, Amal was made a partner at the firm. She was the youngest attorney to ever make partner.
At 16, Amal moved to the United States as part of an international student exchange program. Amal first moved to El Paso, TX, where she lived with an American host family until she graduated from high school.
In 2014, after spending years defending large corporations and insurance companies, Amal’s professional experience and internal desire to help people were in serious conflict. She decided to make a long overdue change and became a plaintiff ’s attorney, which allowed her to align her career goals and personal values.
After high school, Amal relocated to Central Florida to attend UCF, earning her B.A. in Political Science in 2004. While attending UCF, Amal had the opportunity to intern at the Legal Aid Society of the Orange County Bar Association. It was during this time that she realized how many people were denied access to the legal system solely because of a lack of funds. It seemed unjust. The playing field was not level. It was this experience that reinforced Amal’s existing desire to attend law school.
Amal has consistently been named as one of Florida’s Legal Elite Up and Comers by Florida Trend magazine. Amal was also selected as a “Women Who Mean Business” nominee by the Orlando Business Journal.

MARY ANN MORGAN PERSONAL INJURY / WRONGFUL DEATH Just after sundown in rural Brevard County, an airboat ride turned tragic as the driver miscalculated his turn, striking one tree and ping-ponging off several others. In the melee one of the passengers was thrown out of the airboat, striking a tree, the impact nearly causing his death. Due to the dense swampland, emergency first responders were unable to locate the injured man. Fortunately, a nighttime training mission involving Blackhawk helicopters from Patrick Air Force Base was taking place at that time, and crew members were able to use night-vision goggles to rescue the man as he clung to life. The injuries the victim sustained from the accident justified a lawsuit, the man’s family from Tennessee chose Mary Ann Morgan of Winter Park as their lawyer. The referral had come by way of another lawyer, one who had been on the opposite side of the courtroom from her in previous litigation . His respect for her passionate representation of her client in that case prompted him to suggest Mary Ann to represent this man and his family. Many of her clients come to her from other well regarded lawyers in the community. She immediately flew to Tennessee to meet with the man and his wife, who left the meeting feeling like they had been taken into the Billings, Morgan & Boatwright family. “Mary Ann frequently ‘adopts’ her clients; they become part of our family,” said Sue Pearson, her secretary of 26 years. The multi-million dollar recovery came only after Mary Ann recreated the conditions surrounding the accident by hiring her own airboat captain as well as an expert in the field of maritime law. Together they were able to pinpoint the exact location of the accident down to the specific tree the boat had struck. Mary Ann knew that on complex and catastrophic cases like this one, accident reconstruction can make the difference between winning or losing. Going the extra mile for her clients is one of the hallmarks of Mary Ann Morgan, managing partner with the Billings, Morgan & Boatwright law firm. The first woman hired by the firm, she feels her strength lies in her ability to listen to and empathize with her clients. “I represent the individual,” Morgan explains. “When I go to work in the morning, I know I am representing someone who cannot do for themselves what I can do for them. Practicing good listening skills is a priority of being a true counselor-at-law. When I lay my head on my pillow at night I feel a sense of gratitude knowing God has blessed me with the opportunity to change lives for a living.” Currently serving her 7th year on the Florida Bar Board of Governors, she is one of only three lawyers representing the 9th Judicial Circuit (all of Orange and Osceola’s lawyers and judges) She is the Past President of the Orange County Bar Association, and Past President of the Orange County Legal Aid Society, where she has been a pro bono volunteer since joining the firm in 1986.

From 1973 to 1980, Mark Horwitz
was an Assistant United States Attorney. While representing the United States he prosecuted all types of cases including Medicare fraud, tax evasion, wire and mail fraud, fraud against the government, drugs and the murder of the Gotha Postmaster. The opportunity to prosecute these and other crimes provided Mr. Horwitz a solid basis to vigorously defend people under investigation for or charged with serious crime in both federal and state court. Since 1980, Mark has been in private practice in Orlando. He has defended people throughout Florida and the United States. Defending complex federal crimes has been a major part of his practice. He has also defended clients in state criminal matters involving white collar crimes, theft, bribery and state sales tax. In non-white collar cases, he has defended clients in matters involving vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident with death, murder, drugs, child pornography, sex crimes and other offenses. Mark Horwitz is certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a Criminal Trial Advocate and by The Florida Bar as a specialist in Criminal Trial Law. He has the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards by MartindaleHubbel. In addition to the preeminent rating in Martindale-Hubbel, he is listed in Best Lawyers in America and Florida Super Lawyers. Mr. Horwitz is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Mr. Horwitz believes that defending a person’s liberty is the most important responsibility an attorney can undertake. In protecting a client’s freedom, Mark’s philosophy is that no stone is left unturned, all facts are thoroughly investigated, legal issues fully developed and all actions legally and ethically possible are undertaken for the defense. The lawyers and paralegals that work at the Horwitz firm help him carry out these principles. Horwitz utilizes a team concept of lawyers and Florida Bar Registered Paralegals in conjunction with modern technology when investigating, organizing evidence and building a strong defense. Criminal investigations, especially involving white collar crimes, can take months or years. In pre-indictment investigations, the goal is to conduct a thorough defense investigation aimed at developing the facts to convince law enforcement and prosecutors that criminal charges are not warranted. By preventing criminal charges, the client is able to avoid the humiliation and emotional stress associated with indictment and arrest. In some cases it is not possible to prevent the filing of criminal charges. In those situations the pre-
arrest defense investigation is important to a vigorous defense at trial. Criminal tax defense has always been a part of Mr. Horwitz’s practice. He has represented professionals such as doctors, dentists, architects, athletes, as well as business owners and individuals under investigation and charged with violating criminal tax laws. He has tried many criminal tax cases and has been able to persuade the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Justice to close investigations without prosecution. Mark Horwitz has also helped many clients with unreported offshore bank accounts enter and complete the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program, thereby avoiding federal arrest and criminal prosecution and reducing civil monetary penalties. It is not unusual to deal with tens of thousands of documents and hundreds of gigabytes of computer data in white collar cases. To control such massive amounts of evidence, Horwitz utilizes the paralegals and the attorneys that work in his firm as well as cutting edge technology. Although important, Mark believes that “there is no substitute for experience, hard work and diligence to accomplish the goal of defending liberty.”

CHRISTOPHER T. BYRD BYRD LAW GROUP, P.A.
ENVIRONMENTAL & LAND USE LAW After residing in Tallahassee for nearly five years, Byrd brought his passion for protecting Florida’s environment back home to Orlando and established his own practice, the Byrd Law Group, P.A., which offers experience in various practice areas including governmental relations, land use, public records, property, wildlife and zoning. Since, he has represented, and fought alongside some of the Nation’s most reputable environmental organizations taking on, and bringing to light some of the biggest threats Florida’s natural resources face today. Since 2013, following the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s declaration of an “Unusual Mortality Event” in the Indian River Lagoon, Byrd has helped lead an investigation into the Florida Department of Health’s unbridled permitting of septic tanks in the IRL watershed and is currently preparing for Federal litigation under the Endangered Species Act. In 2014, Byrd and local environmental advocacy group, Speak Up Wekiva, succeeded in protecting 3 million acres of state-owned conservation land after shifting the state’s focus from selling conservation lands to non-conservation lands. When changes were made to the Osceola County Comprehensive Plan removing key components of the conservation element, Byrd and Audubon of Florida stepped in and successfully reversed the harmful changes. Most recently, Byrd has filed suit against the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission challenging the constitutionality and scientific basis of the new rules allowing hunting of Florida black bears. Byrd serves on the Executive Council of the Environmental and Land Use Law Section of the Florida Bar and he was recently appointed to serve on the Florida Bar’s Animal Law Committee. Today, the Byrd Law Group strives to provide high-quality civil legal representation and consulting services in the greater Central Florida Region while maintaining offices in Winter Park and near UCF in Orlando.
Christopher Byrd grew up in Central Florida, witnessing first-hand the growth and development of the region, which ultimately spurred his passion for the environment. Growing up along the creeks and forests of Winter Springs, Byrd realized how altering the land use of a community also alters its character and heritage, and so he decided to dedicate his career to advocating for the conservation of Florida’s environment and wildlife. Immediately after earning his Juris Doctorate from Nova Southeastern University, Byrd was hired by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in Tallahassee as a Water Enforcement Attorney focusing on wetlands, water systems and beaches. He was soon promoted to Senior Assistant General Counsel in the Public Lands Division, where he litigated sovereign submerged lands and natural resources cases, specializing in coral reef protection.

Commercial, Products Liability & Insurance Litigation In 1978, Sheehe moved to Miami. Sheehe has tried numerous complex jury trials, including a trial that exceeded six months in duration. Sheehe continues to represent both major corporations and individuals in trials throughout the United States in state and federal courts. The firm maintains offices in Miami and Lake Mary. UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL: Why did you become an attorney? I like the competition. I was a competitive swimmer at the University of Florida for my four years there; my favorite stroke was the butterfly. I’m extremely comfortable in the courtroom. I really like it; it’s fun. What do you like best about the practice of law? I like winning and I’m good at it. Being in the courtroom fighting for my clients brings me a lot of pleasure. Not many people hire a trial attorney to “do their best;” they hire them to win. That’s what we do and we do it well. I’m tough in the courtroom, but I can leave it behind. I’m friendly with most of my opponents because I can “leave it in the courtroom.” Most of my trials are long and complex and can take months of being in court. Personal: Born in Marion, Ohio, October 7, 1948; came to Florida to swim for the University of Florida varsity swim team; married for 39 years; has two grown daughters; participates in U.S. Master Swimming for adults; has show horses that he keeps in Ocala. evaluated and defended cases, Yonfa left to join up with a large personal injury firm to represent injured individuals. “Ryan and I had very similar tracks to lead us to the formation of our firm. Client’s having access to my cell phone was a must when Yonfa Hayes began. I made the decision to know my clients. When they call my cell phone, I know it’s not just to say ‘hello.’ I want my clients to be able to sit down at the dinner table with their family and not be worrying unnecessarily about their legal issues.” The formula was an immediate success. Yonfa Hayes’ reputation for client satisfaction continues to spread quickly as the firm has clients throughout the State of Florida from Key West to Pensacola. The firm’s unique blend of big firm trial experience with a dedication to remaining boutique has been a refreshing departure from the norm. Yonfa believes clients are under enough stress without having to fight with the lawyers and staff that are supposed to be representing them. “I just assume everyone would rather not have unnecessary strife in their life. I try and make the litigation process as painless as possible, for all involved. In any arena, poor communication is the source of unnecessary suffering in the world. Often times, we proceed from the get-go with an ‘I am right, you are wrong’ mentality. Sometimes it might be true, but posturing tends to get in the way of resolution. I have met many intelligent people who are their own worst enemies.” Albert Yonfa was recently named by Super Lawyers Magazine as one of the State of Florida’s Rising Stars. He and his wife, Dr. Carolyn Yonfa, who is also of Cuban descent and an Orlando native, take great pride in living in Central Florida and working to better the ever expanding community they love.
“Peace of mind is priceless,” says the Orlando native. “I don’t pretend to matter very much in the grand scheme of the universe. But the people who do seek out my help are in real need. They are afraid or hurting, and to them, what I do and how I do it matters very much.”
Albert Yonfa partnered with Ryan Hayes to start a firm with a simple premise; stay small and product quality will stay high. Yonfa Hayes, P.A. specializes in representing injured individuals due to the actions of individuals, companies, schools or government entities. In her spare time, Ms. Willis and her husband John are avid outdoor enthusiasts. They enjoy distance running, cycling, and swimming. Last summer they purchased an RV so they could regularly travel to nearby beaches, and take their three cats along for their adventures. They also love hiking, biking, and camping in the Western mountains.
Tina Willis was raised by her grandparents in Winter Garden. Her grandfather was the foreman in a local orange grove, and her grandmother stayed home to raise her.
Tina would love to get to know more Orlando residents & business owners on Twitter, @tinatruths, Facebook, at facebook/tinawillislaw, or Google Plus.
Her family was extremely proud when she was the first to attend college, which she did at Florida State University in the mid-1990s. They were even more proud when she was accepted into FSU College of Law, and finished second in her 1995 class, with many high achievement awards, and job offers from some of the most highly ranked law firms in Orlando, and nationwide. She began her career back in 1996 in Atlanta, and worked at a couple of large law firms, practicing employment and insurance defense. She never really felt her heart was behind defending big companies. So she left those firms and began many years of helping smaller law firms, with some of their most difficult research and writing projects, for important documents to be filed in many high value court cases. She worked mostly for malpractice and personal injury lawyers, and learned a great deal from several outstanding mentors.

JOE PATE PATES LAW GROUP, P.A. Joe Pate has been a criminal defense attorney for seven years in the
Central Florida Community. His firm, Pates Law Group, P.A., is based out of downtown Orlando in the South Colonialtown historic district. Prior to opening the firm in 2008, Joe worked as an Assistant State Attorney for both Orange and Osceola counties for three years. As a prosecutor, he gained invaluable courtroom experience both trying and negotiating cases, yet he increasingly realized his desire to help the individual citizens of society that are often times in situations that are not lifestyle choices but in fact are the result of a mistake in judgment or even simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Joe would state 95% of those charged with a crime are not “bad” people, but rather are simply doing what they thought in the moment that they had to do, or just not realizing the potential negative consequences to themselves or to others of those choices. People deserve second chances and to have an advocate passionately pursuing their best interests when facing any criminal allegations levied against them. In a preventative effort to reduce negative consequences, Joe volunteers as a mentor with LIFEGUIDES, assisting foster care youth with the transition into adulthood. In 2012 the passion of Pates Law expanded, bringing in Joe’s wife, Andrea, to provide family law services. This practice includes divorce, paternity, adoptions, and modification actions, as well as service as a Florida Supreme Court Family Mediator, Parenting Coordinator and Guardian ad Litem. Continuing the desire to advocate for families, Andrea’s most recent training is focused on Elder Mediation and providing resolution for the full spectrum of family issues. Andrea has served for six years on the Board of Directors for The Foundation for Foster Children, advocated in schools and provided free seminars to the community on real issues facing families. Gaining strength in the community, Pates Law brought on Peyton Lea and Natalia Scott to continue a high quality of service to an increasing number of families. Natalia in particular has a heart for adoption and guardianship cases some of which can be some of most heart-wrenching stories but most joyful outcomes. Pates Law Group is a “hand to hand,” boutique firm. The concern is the individual and the relationships of that individual. The sense of calm amidst the storm, promptness of return calls, and advocacy in and out of the courtroom are only a few ways the attorneys of Pates Law Group have been complemented. This holistic, client-centered approach brings a sincerity to the practice of law that generates a culture of support and strength both during the course of a case, and also for years after.

TRAVIS WILLIAMS PERSONAL INJURY/CRIMINAL LAW/CIVIL RIGHTS Twelve years ago Travis started a law firm that now practices in the areas of personal injury, criminal law and civil rights violations with the vision of advocating for individuals and families in need of an attorney who is willing to fight for them against big business, insurance companies, law enforcement and the Government. When it comes to the area of personal injury, Travis maintains that “nowhere in the practice of law is there more opportunity to help those who are truly in need, who have been wronged through no fault of their own, and who are not going to get any relief without a lawyer who is willing to fight for their rights.” In the past few years, Travis has seen the need and has stepped up to the plate in litigating on behalf of clients that have been unnecessarily subjected to police brutality and excessive force. Travis believes that most police officers provide exceptional service to the community. However, he also firmly believes that when an officer oversteps and injures a citizen without justification, that officer needs to be held accountable just like anyone else. Travis believes in the saying that trial work is 90 percent preparation, and 10 percent in the courtroom. While results matter, Travis’s clients often comment on and appreciate his personal service and attention to details. Travis points to his paralegal of eleven years, Lawanda, as an integral part in making sure no stone is left unturned. On behalf of his clients, Travis has tried multiple jury trials in both State and Federal Courts. Travis’s dedication to his clients and craft has not gone unnoticed. Travis has received recognition from three prestigious publications. SuperLawyers, the National Trial Lawyers Association and the National Association of Distinguished Counsel have recognized Travis as one of the top lawyers and trial litigators in Florida. While recognition is rewarding and plaques on a wall are nice, Travis gets much more gratification from reading through the numerous letters and cards from clients expressing their heartfelt thanks for caring about their case and their lives.

Travis received his Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University in
1996. Although becoming a lawyer was not his life’s dream or ambition, Travis always had a thirst to do something with his life that helped people. Determined to choose a profession that he would both enjoy and be able to use as a tool to help others, going to law school and becoming a lawyer made sense to Travis.
Travis has carried over his commitment to help others into his life outside of work. Amongst participating in many community events, Travis volunteers on Sundays with his wife, Francee, at the Orlando Union Rescue Mission. Travis and Francee have been blessed with three daughters, Ella (10), Kate (7) and Madison (4). When away from work, he enjoys numerous sports and trips with family to the beach, Disney and the mountains.
Travis felt confident that with so many different areas of law to choose from that he would find an area that suited him and his goals. During law school, Travis developed a passion for and excelled in the fields of litigation and trial advocacy. He graduated with honors from Stetson University College of Law and received the Victor O. Wehle Trial Advocacy Award given to the top trial litigator of each graduating class.

This becomes problematic over time because assets and family situations change leaving the original estate plan inadequate or obsolete. Wasinger Law estate plans include a no charge three-year review to avoid his clients’ plans from becoming outdated. “Our goal is to ensure that our client’s estate plans adapt as their lives change to protect both their family members and financial assets”, Wasinger says, “because an out of date estate plan is almost as useless, and just as costly, as having no plan.” As a result, Wasinger sees his clients’ signing of estate planning documents to be the start of a lifelong relationship. Matt also tries to convey how important it is for couples with young children to have a plan in place. “Most people believe estate planning is for when you are older, or push it off assuming they have plenty of time.” But, Wasinger says, that line of thinking is what gets people in trouble. “The longer people wait, the more their children, business, and assets are exposed. Life doesn’t wait, so putting a plan in place as soon as possible is one of the most important steps a family can make to prepare for those unexpected life events.” Wasinger Law Office also focuses on real estate and business law. Wasinger represents banks, private lenders, businesses and individuals in the areas of business formation, title actions, foreclosures, liens, and landlord-tenant issues. I do a lot of what I did as a CFO in helping my clients grow and navigate the troubled waters that come with being an early stage venture.”, Ken said. The Entrepreneur Law Center focuses primarily on business planning, mergers & acquisitions, CFO/General Counsel services, due diligence, tax, international business, strategy, venture capital, private equity, and angel investor services. The firm has offices in downtown Orlando and at the Tampa Bay Technology Incubator.
KENNETH HAMNER ATTORNEY AT LAW Ken Hamner, a 2014 Rising Star in Orlando’s Legal Elite, has been named Orlando Style Magazine’s top attorney in Business Planning and Mergers & Acquisitions in 2015. He started his career 25 years ago, after graduating from George Mason University with degrees in Finance and Accounting, at Arthur Andersen in Washington DC, where he served as an Audit Senior primarily auditing financial institutions, real estate developers, and asset managers. Ken later moved to Ernst & Young in Washington DC as a Senior Consultant, where he participated in a variety of projects, including valuing a nationwide portfolio of commercial real estate for a Swiss bank and a study of market rents for HUD to aid in developing a voucher pricing model. Then at age 29, he moved to Florida and accepted a position as CFO of an early stage venture. “Taking a rather untraditional leap into entrepreneurship seemed at that time to be a bit of a gamble, but looking back on it now, it was the key move that shaped my career,” Ken said. “In three years, we went from having operations in Orlando and the Marco Island area in Florida, to expanding to Palm Springs, California, Puerto Rico, the US and British Virgin Islands, Aruba, St. Lucia, Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and eventually Hawaii.” Planning and executing international market penetration, including negotiating foreign direct investment and structuring foreign distribution and strategic alliances led to a more than ten-fold increase in revenue for the company. Ken played the key role in raising the seed capital that fueled this growth. In 1999, Ken took yet another unconventional path and returned to school, attending Florida State University where he earned his Juris Doctor and MBA. “I was only 32 at the time, and during my time as CFO I realized that virtually every aspect of a company’s growth depended on good legal advice”, Ken said. Upon graduating law school and business school, he served as CFO and General Counsel for two international steel trading firms before joining a small law firm in Orlando, where he eventually became managing partner. In 2008, he launched The Entrepreneur Law Center to focus on building a multidisciplinary practice tailored to the needs of business clients. “I guess you could say that now
Aside from his Juris Doctor and MBA from Florida State University, Ken also hold a MS in Entrepreneurship in Applied Technologies from the University of South Florida, a Master of Accounting in Forensic Accounting from Florida Atlantic University, a BS in Accounting and a BS in Finance, both from George Mason University. He is a Certified Merger & Acquisition Advisor, a Master Analyst in Financial Forensics, a Certified Fraud Examiner, a Certified Due Diligence Professional, a Certified Business Intermediary, a Licensed Real Estate Broker, and holds both a Series 82 Private Securities Offering and a Series 63 securities license with FINRA. Internationally, he has studied law at Humboldt University in Berlin where he received certificates in both mediation and dispute resolution, at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing, where he received a Certificate in Chinese Law, and at the University of the West Indies in Barbados, where he authored a published academic article on foreign direct investment. The Entrepreneur Law Center has been the recipient of numerous awards in recent years, including Business Planning Law Firm of the Year in the United States by Acquisition International, Entrepreneurial Services Advisory of the Year in ACQ’s Law Awards, Transactions Law Firm of the Year in the United States by Corporate LiveWire in their International M&A Awards, Independent Boutique Law Firm of the Year in the United States in ACQ’s Global Awards, the Golden Advisor Award by Worldwide Financial Advisor Magazine, Best Venture Capital Law Firm in ACQ’s Law Awards, and Independent Boutique Law Firm of the Year in North America and recognized as part of the Global 100, consisting of only the world’s leading 100 firms by KHM Media’s M&A Today. Aside from the main office in downtown Orlando, The Entrepreneur Law Center opened a second office at the Tampa Bay Technology Incubator in 2014 to be closer to the startup ecosystem developing there. Additionally, Ken joined the University of South Florida’s Center for Entrepreneurship faculty, where he teaches graduate courses in Intellectual Property and Mergers & Acquisitions to a diverse student body consisting of graduate business, entrepreneurship, engineering and medical students. Tiffany Springsteen, a student in his Intellectual Property class said, “Professor Hamner was honestly one of the most influential and inspiring professors I have ever had at USF. He is one of those teachers that will have a lasting impact on my future.” Ken counts his involvement at USF as one of the most rewarding of his career. Bill Moore, a Candidate for Orange County Commissioner District 3 and a longstanding client as a Board Member of the Fraternal Order of Police and a former Agent for the Metropolitan Bureau 100 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
of Investigation said, “I asked Ken to lead my campaign as Campaign Treasurer after seeing first hand his skills in both financial and legal matters. At the Fraternal Order of Police, Ken has served in a General Counsel role for District 7 covering ten counties and nearly 20 lodges, and in various roles for the Orange County Sheriff ’s FOP Lodge, the Orlando Police Department’s Lodge, and the Orange County Corrections’ Lodge. He also was instrumental in working with the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation in helping us seize one of the largest Civil RICO forfeitures in the history of the agency during my time as an Agent there. He brings such a wide range of skills to his clients, from legal strategy to forensic accounting and from financial strategy to corporate governance.” Dennis Wilkinson, a longstanding client and veteran senior executive with numerous international logistics firms, including Worldlink Logistics, Hanjin Logistics, Kuehne + Nagle, and his current role as General Manager for transpacific services for DHL Global Forwarding says, “I have worked with many attorneys both on a personal and professional basis and Ken was absolutely the best. Without a doubt his common sense approach coupled with flawless strategy produced positive results far greater than expected. Ken has so many skill sets not commonly found in even large law firms, much less in one attorney directing his own boutique firm. I have called on Ken’s expertise to structure M&A deals, to conduct due diligence on acquisition targets, and for general business insight into a wide variety of matters over the years.” Stanley and Debbie Britt, who own a highly successful e-travel venture and a CFO/General Counsel client for more than five years, said the following, “We consult Ken on virtually all aspects of our business and consider him to be our most trusted advisor. Not only has he been undefeated in the courtroom for us, which has been invaluable in an increasingly litigious environment, but his ability to understand our business and provide strategic insight has been a key factor in our success.” In closing, Ken said, “What I enjoy most about my work is helping my clients become successful. The increasing rate of globalization and the infusion of technology into all facets of business will inevitably increase the pace and scale of the global M&A marketplace. Companies that used to be too small to even consider global alliances or to sustain global customer relationships now can. My firm is living proof. I have clients reaching well beyond Florida to international commercial centers like New York, Beijing, Seoul, Amsterdam, and London, as well as clients in the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and Africa. Tomorrow’s clients could come from anywhere.”

STARTING SCHOOL
WITH FOOD AND LATEX ALLERGIES By Jose R. Arias, Jr. M.D. | Anaphylaxis Community Expert
Dr. Jose R. Arias, Jr. Photo by Brion Price
Whether you are returning to the same school, starting a new school or moving away to college, Starting the school year can be both an exciting and simultaneously a life threatening experience if you have a food or latex allergy. Preparation is the key to a stress free school year. First on the list for a stress free start is meeting
with your allergy and immunology doctor to obtain an updated Anaphylaxis Action Plan. After talking with your doctor, obtain updated epinephrine auto-injectors. There are two brand names in the U.S. to choose from: Epi-Pen and Auvi-Q. Epinephrine is the first line treatment for anaphylaxis or severe allergic reaction. This treatment needs to be carried by the student at all times – everywhere, every day – and used as soon as a reaction is suspected. Calling 911 should be done immediately after using an epinephrine autoinjector to ensure the student is taken to the nearest hospital for monitoring. Because of the seriousness of a severe allergic reaction, teachers and faculty should be made aware of the student’s allergies. Latex may be found in school dining halls, biology and chemistry labs and classrooms. Much like those with food allergies, one of the most important steps in avoiding reactions is to notify cafeteria staff, lab coordinators and the front office staff to be certain the student with a latex allergy is readily accommodated. Often this is a simple matter of asking and informing staff to use non-latex gloves. Your allergist and immunology
physician can provide a letter addressing the severity of the student’s allergies. This letter can be used when requesting both food and latex allergy accommodations in the school. Visit www.AllergyAsthmaNetwork.org and www. LatexAllergyResources.org for easy to understand ways to prevent and control symptoms of food and latex allergy. Dr. Arias has been named a “Top Doctor” in the field of allergy and immunology for four years in a row. He is an experienced allergy and immunologist specialist who regularly assists both adults and children in managing their allergies, asthma, and immune system diseases. When teeth are extracted and not replaced with a dental implant, the bone of the jaws begins a process called bone resorption due to loss of function. This missing tooth or teeth will eventually create teeth disarrangements creating spaces, teeth shifting, and vertical movement of the teeth towards the opposing jaw. To avoid these disarrangements from happening implants (as the best treatment option) or a fixed bridge should be considered.
When the upper jaw (maxilla) has missing teeth for a long period of time or when initially there is not enough bone height to place a dental implant in posterior part of the maxilla, a bone graft procedure is indicated to increase the height of the remaining bone anatomy. The name of this procedure is sinus lift or internal augmentation of the maxillary sinus. This technique has been modified through the years. The classic technique consists of the preparation of a top hinge door (or window) in the lateral part of the bone. This door is then pushed inward and upward together with the sinus membrane; then the space created underneath this door (or window) is filled with graft material. Although successful, the techniques require large flaps for access, risk of sinus membrane perforation and increase in instrumentation.

DYNAMIC POSITIVE
PRESSURE Dr. Carl Bilancione Comprehensive & Cosmetic Dentistry, PA 2828 Casa Aloma Way, Suite 700 , Winter Park, FL 32792
A newly developed technique (Dynamic Positive Pressure) for this type of procedure aims for minimal invasive and atraumatic procedure with less surgical time, therefore less discomfort, less risk for infection and complications. With this modified sinus augmentation technique the time consumption is decreased and there is reduced trauma to the patient reducing the inflammatory reaction and port-operative discomfort. The Dynamic Positive Pressure technique is a significant modification of the procedure that has the following advantages: 1) Minimally invasive; 2) Reduced surgical time; 3) Minimal instrumentation; 4) Minimal post-operative recovery time; 5) Minimal postsurgical complications.
The technique takes advantage of a bone graft material made of demineralized bone matrix putty paste with cancellous bone with a reverse phase medium. The gel-like nature of this material allows for the graft material to flow from the delivery device and spread into the graft site. This material allows for gentle and consistent Dynamic Positive Pressure, lifting the membrane and symmetrically distributing the graft material. Because of the graft consistency and method of delivery of this material, the sinus membrane is softly elevated with minimal compression and reduces the risk of perforation. Radiographic images confirm retention of the graft material following surgery (Figures 1a, 1b presurgical evaluation; 2a, 2b postsurgical evaluation). Figure 1a
Figure 1b
Figure 2a
Figure 2b
As conclusion, the Dynamic Positive Pressure Technique offers many advantages over traditional methods of augmenting (grafting) the maxillary bone height. The minimally invasive technique allows for a more efficient procedure for the surgeon, less intra-operative and postoperative complications, and a greatly improved post-operative course for the patient.
