Ask the Doctor at Style… Dear Readers, This amazing Valentines issue is not only romantic, but also, to keep you healthy, at least if you go to the doctor frequently. We are here to help with a selection of the best doctors in our area. The selected are recommended by their local peers and many local and regional readers. It is always important to us to present you professionals that are known and recommended by their local professionals and readers, and not some list from Boston or New York. We make sure that all of our “Elite Doctors” are in business and ready to take good care of you. Please let us know about your experience when you visit any of these professionals.

In this beautiful Valentine’s Issue, you’ll be inspired to make your holiday of love one to remember. We have great ideas for planning the perfect day. We’ll also show you how to spruce up your wardrobe this year to make it ready to take on 2020. As always, we are here to keep you up to date on the latest trends to enhance your personal style. Remember, spring is right around the corner, so February is the month to decide what looks you’ll want to highlight this next season. Time to put those sweaters and coats back in the closet and pick out some new, playful pieces that will become your favorites this spring.

2020, a new decade is already off to an exciting, fresh start and we are thrilled to see all that this year holds for the city of Orlando! Now that we have left the past decade behind us, what better reason to embrace an open heart and mind to all that 2020 holds for us? Whether you have set New Year’s resolutions to transform your fitness or health routines, or, businessrelated goals, this is your year to try something new and look forward to a year of opportunity!

With love in our hearts, we at Orlando Style would like to extend to all of you, our amazing readers, our sincerest gratitude. We are so appreciative of you and your loyal support. Your faithfulness to our publication continues to encourage us to create issues that engage, motivate, and inspire. Also, I would like to thank our dedicated team of hardworking writers, designers, and photographers, as well as our wonderful advertisers. You all play such an important role in our journey!

February, the month of love, is here, so it’s a great time to grab hold of the opportunity to show how much you care for that special someone in your life. It is such a blessing to find love, so take a moment to show your spouse or significant other what they mean to you. This Valentine’s Day, celebrate that person you share your heart with by taking them to a wonderful night out at one of our city’s delicious restaurants or to an exciting local event. Treat your sweetheart to dinner and drinks, or enjoy our world-class entertainment experiences right here in Central Florida. No matter what you decide to do together, there are countless ways to fill your evening with romance, so don’t forget to make your reservations!

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

Take a Ride to a Staycation at

THE DAYTONA When the cool winter days transition into spring, it’s hard not to wonder where the time goes. We’re planning week-long vacations somewhere exotic, trying to soak up every minute of vacation before we get back into the swing of our day-to-day schedules. However, in the midst of all the chaos, we tend to forget that we live where millions of people travel to for their vacation every year! I can’t help but wonder, why not plan more weekend staycations? Sure, hopping on a plane to fly some place far away from home is exciting, but let’s be honest, that’s not always realistic.

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

When it comes to finding the perfect spot for a staycation in Florida, the options are endless. Whether it be a thrilling theme park or a relaxing beach getaway, the Sunshine State has everything you need and more! If you’re looking to mix a thrill with that ocean breeze, The DAYTONA is your go-to destination for the perfect staycation. Located directly across from the worldfamous Daytona International Speedway, The DAYTONA embodies the world of racing with a vibrant signature style. Surrounded by shopping, dining and entertainment, the six-story Marriott Autograph Collection property features 144 custom luxury designed guest rooms, a full-service restaurant and bar, an outdoor bar & terrace, heated swimming pool, outdoor fire pit, meeting space, and more than 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space. It’s the perfect escape for travelers seeking a chic and modern escape on Florida’s stunning east coast.

the hotel is a destination in itself with the race inspired décor that’s displayed from the floors to the ceiling. You don’t have to be a racing fan to appreciate the intricate detail and creativity that makes this hotel unlike any other in the world. There’s a lot to see and you’ll need to put some time aside to see it all! The six-story newly build hotel was designed by Studio 11 Design, with guest rooms and common areas that pay homage to the destination’s unique racing heritage, accents and furnishings inspired by the iconic tri-oval shape of the Speedway, and finishes with clean lines and curved shapes representing the speed of stock cars, sports cars and motorcycles.

The DAYTONA is the most unique hotel in Daytona for so many reasons. At just a mile from Daytona Beach International Airport and a short drive from ‘The World’s Most Famous Beach,’ The DAYTONA offers easy accessibility to area attractions, including the Daytona International Speedway, 23 miles of local beaches, boardwalk amusements, museums, outdoor recreation and the ONE DAYTONA dining and retail district. The hotel offers complimentary airport shuttle service.

The DAYTONA features 144 custom-designed guest rooms, including 31 premium rooms with balconies overlooking ONE DAYTONA’s high energy Victory Circle, and four luxury suites that offer views of the Daytona International Speedway. Featured amenities include: a full-service restaurant and bar, heated swimming pool, a second-floor lobby area called “The Grid” where vintage show cars are on display year-round, an outdoor terrace overlooking ONE DAYTONA where guests can watch live entertainment and Vegas-like synchronized fountain shows, and complimentary shuttle service that transports guests within a 3-mile radius. No need to worry if you’re hoping to get a work out in during your staycation. Fitness options include bicycle rentals, a state-ofthe-art fitness center, and an onsite Fit Park at ONE DAYTONA.

The DAYTONA isn’t just any regular hotel though. Yes, it’s in a prime location. Yes, it’s in walking distance of the Daytona International Speedway. However,

Getting hungry yet? You’re in luck because not only are you within walking distance of the many reputable restaurants within ONE DAYTONA, but you also

have access within the hotel to Sir Malcolm. Inspired by Sir Malcolm Campbell, this restaurant gets its name from the legendary British racing motorist known for setting various land speed records during Prohibition. The best part is that five of those records happened right here on the track in Daytona. Executive Chef Jason Ward brings his flair to Sir Malcolm with a contemporary menu featuring a whimsical twist on classic American comfort food while paying homage to a bygone era and the area’s iconic racing history. Menu highlights include House-Made Corn Bread with Moonshine Butter, Chili Shrimp Corn Dogs with Miso Mustard, and Chislehurst Roast Chicken. What comes after dinner? Cocktails, of course! Technically cocktails are a good idea any time of day (mostly) but The Blue Flame welcomes guests to sit back and relax with a drink. This sleek bar offers 16 custom craft beers on tap and cocktails inspired by the area’s legendary racing history. The property partners with Sugarland’s Shine, the official Moonshine of NASCAR®, to offer a selection of hand-crafted Moonshine cocktails. The atmosphere is so unique and the drinks are so good that you won’t want to go anywhere else.

BEACHES, RACING, DINING AND SO MUCH MORE ALL WHILE STAYING WITHIN A COUPLE OF HOURS FROM HOME – WHAT CAN BE BETTER THAN THAT?

When you’re ready to venture out into the unique and popular town of Daytona, you have several options of activities, restaurants, sightseeing and so much more. FOOD SENSITIVITY TESTING FOR A PERSONALIZED DIET By Shelby Newman

We’re all familiar with the food pyramid – grains on the bottom, sweets on top, and everything else in between. But did you know that not everyone is able to tolerate the standard diet plan you learned about in first grade? Everyone’s body responds differently to foods – while a hard-boiled egg might be the perfect protein-packed pre-workout snack for Sally, it might cause Cindy to feel sluggish, tired, or just downright bad. You’re body can have sensitivities to even the most healthy and natural food, like avocados or blueberries, which is why taking a food sensitivity test is the perfect solution for anyone looking to find out which foods are best for their body, and which ones should be avoided. Before you grab a kit for yourself, understand that food sensitivities and food allergies are not the same, and neither are their tests. A food allergy is an often life threatening response from the immune system, and the tests for this must be conducted under the care of a trained medical professional. Food sensitivity, on the other hand, is less severe and is usually caused by the digestive system. Food sensitivities are known to cause unpleasant symptoms, ranging from moderate to almost undetectable in some people. Additionally, symptoms don’t typically show up immediately, making it difficult to identify the culprits on your own. Fortunately, many health care providers and virtual mail kits offer services to test your body’s sensitivity to a wide array of food types to help

36

| STYLETOME.COM

determine the best and worst foods for your personal diet. The most popular test comes in the form of a blood or finger prick test. The results are reported back to you in an easy to understand format, usually color coded, outlining the degree of sensitivity the patient has to each individual food or food type. Unfortunately, the growing concept of food sensitivity testing is still new, and there is uncertainty about the validity of the results. Don’t let this deter you from trying it for yourself, as much of this uncertainty stems from the tendency of food sensitivities to change overtime, making it difficult to pinpoint the cause of sensitivity when it can be grown out of. Many patients reported success after testing for a type of immunoglobulin G in the blood that most food sensitivity tests look for when diagnosing patients. Higher levels of immunoglobulin G are consistent with irregular immune system activity and hence, abnormal sensitivities to certain foods or food groups. The results of a food sensitivity test can give you the power to control how your diet makes you feel, and change life for the better by revealing food sensitivities that you might have never realized you had. Whether you’re looking to solve the mystery of your daily digestive trouble, or you’re simply curious to learn more about bettering your body, food sensitivity testing is worth a try.

PERPETUALLY SINGLE

CELEBRITIES THINK YOU’RE ALL ALONE IN YOUR SINGLENESS? THINK AGAIN! By Riesa Pascal

Michael B. Jordan

Tom Cruise

Chris Evans

Considering his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors, it may seem surprising that Michael B. Jordan has yet to be involved in a Hollywood romance. The Black Panther star turns 33 this month and has insisted that he’s not ready for a relationship because he’s too dedicated to his career to offer someone a meaningful connection. There have been some rumors about him and actress Lupita Nyong’o, but Jordan addressed those rumors in an interview with USA Today confirming that they were just gossip.

While his ex-wife has since had a high profile romance with Jamie Foxx, Tom Cruise has been single ever since he and Katie Holmes divorced in 2012. Some reports have linked the 57-year-old to his Mission: Impossible co-star Vanessa Kirby, but the actress called the rumors “ludicrous” and pointed out that she had been in a relationship for two years when the rumors came out.

How it’s possible for Captain America to still be single is truly one of life’s greatest mysteries. Often referred to as one of the nicest guys in Hollywood, it seems to be difficult for actor Chris Evans to maintain a relationship. The 38-year-old’s longest relationship was with actress Jessica Biel from 2001 to 2006, but the Avengers star has had an on-again off-again relationship with actress Minka Kelly since then, once in 2007 and once in 2012. In 2016, he briefly dated his Gifted co-star Jenny Slate, but nothing seems to last. I guess we’ll have to mark this mystery “unsolved.”

CELEBRITY SOUP

Welp, it’s that time of year again! Love is in the air, and store shelves across the city are awash with pink cards, red roses and sweet chocolates. That’s right, Singles Awareness Day—err, I mean, Valentine’s Day—is right around the corner, and whether you’ve just gotten out of a relationship or Cupid hasn’t paid you a visit for years, being single on Valentine’s Day can often seem like the worst. But take heart! I’ve brought you a list of some of Hollywood’s most perpetually single stars to help show you that you’re not alone in being all alone.

Betty White

Chelsea Handler

Sheryl Crow

Last month, Betty White celebrated her 98th birthday and guess what? She’s still single! Though she’s open to dating, White says her biggest problem is that no one asks her out. Perhaps they’re too intimidated by her dazzling smile, iconic dimples and spunky personality. Regardless, whoever she does date better not expect a wedding in his future. After her third husband, Allen Ludden, died in 1981, White made the choice to never get married again because she knows that nobody can ever replace the wonderful years that he gave her. As she told Larry King in an interview, “Once you’ve had the best, who needs the rest?”

Chelsea Handler has always said she’s not into marriage and even called it “weak” to want to be in a relationship. Though her last confirmed boyfriend was a decade ago, recently the comedian has admitted that she’s beginning to change her mind on the topic. Handler, who turns 45 this month, spoke about the change of heart in an interview saying that a therapist helped her realize that admitting you want a relationship is not weak, or an indication that you aren’t happy with yourself. She summed up her thoughts saying, “I have a pretty good life so I’m happy if I don’t have a relationship. But I’d love to find somebody to love.”

Unlike some other celebrities on our list, Sheryl Crow is single, but very ready to mingle! The award-winning rockstar turns 58 just three days before Valentine’s Day, but she hasn’t been linked with anyone publicly in almost a decade. Crow opened up about her love life in an interview with People saying that she tells all of her friends to set her up. Unluckily for her, she’s just too much of a catch. She elaborated on the subject saying, “They’re like, ‘We don’t know anybody good enough,’ and I keep saying, ‘Lower your standards!’”

Andrea Bocelli Valentine’s Day By Courtney Caggiano

Popularly recognized as the world’s most beloved tenor, Andrea Bocelli is returning to Florida with a tour stop at Tampa’s Amalie Arena on February 14 for a romantic night of music that you won’t want to miss. Following his previous sold-out appearance in Tampa in 2018, the incredible vocalist is bringing his annual Valentine’s Day performances to select cities, and Tampa is lucky enough to receive the artist on romance’s most treasured day. This Valentine’s Day, the Italian singer will be joined by the Opera Tampa Festival Chorus, treating fans to a repertoire of iconic love songs, beautiful arias, and vocal masterpieces that will make for an unforgettable evening with your loved one. With a career spanning over two decades, Bocelli has gained international success, garnering audiences eager to hear his incomparable voice, from his homeland of Italy to the United States. A proficient performer of the classical and operatic genres, the artist has received countless accolades and critical acclaim, with mesmerizing collaborations alongside legendary acts. Bocelli found his breakthrough in 1992, when he was asked to record a demo with Italian pop star Zucchero Fornaciari. The song, “Miserere,” was intended for famed vocalist Luciano Pavarotti, who was so impressed with Bocelli’s talent that the two singers became friends and colleagues. As one of the greatest vocalists of his generation, Bocelli has sold over 80 million albums, becoming a global phenomenon with songs and renditions of classics that continue to be timeless staples in his catalog of work. Bocelli’s classical album, Sacred Arias, has

gained the title of biggest-selling classical crossover album by a solo artist of all time. While Bocelli claims opera to be his first love— which is not a surprise when experiencing the tenor’s undeniable panache for the genre—he has been known to mix arias with popular music styles, creating a genre that many have referred to as “popera.” This effort to cultivate more expansion in his audience base has gained him fans from all walks of life, both young and old. In 2018, the singer released his sixteenth studio album, Si, which is Bocelli’s first album of original material in 14 years. Si is a collection of various genres, lyrical stylings, and emotion, featuring duets both unexpected and incomparable. On the track “Fall on Me,” the artist combines talents with his son Matteo Bocelli, and Ed Sheeran lends his vocals and co-writing credits on “Amo soltanto te.” Powerhouse vocalist Josh Groban also appears on the album. Bocelli is sure to feature songs from this latest album, along with fan favorites that have shaped his career throughout the years and have given him a special place in the hearts of listeners all over the world. Come celebrate the day of love with one of the finest voices. Whether a Valentine’s Day gift for your significant other or a delightful night out, there’s no better way to spend February 14 than being serenaded by the amazing vocals of Andrea Bocelli with the one you love.

THE PERFECT RED FOR YOUR SKIN TONE By Sara Cody

The colors we wear can either make or break the vibrancy of our skin. When it comes to make-up, we should match our lip shade the same as we would match foundation or face powder. Once you understand your own skin, you will know the hues that work best for you. The first step in defining your skin tone is by determining the undertones of your skin. The best way of recognizing your undertone is by looking at the veins in your wrist. If they appear to be blue or purple, you have cool undertones. Cool undertones call for lipstick colors that have deep blu-ish shades. So instead of an orangey red, you would go for deep, purple tinted red. Also, dusty purple and

berry shades compliment your skin! If your veins are slightly more green, you have warm undertones. Vibrant colors are your friend! You can go for an orangey shade or bright red! Peachy-pink shades are also a match for you. If your veins seem to be a mixture of these colors, then you might have neutral undertones. Neutral undertones basically just means you’ve been blessed with the ability to rock basically any shade of red. Orangey reds, pink-reds, berry-reds, wine red. My best advice to anybody with a neutral skin tone is to rock the everlasting classic Marilyn Monroe red...just because you can!

SHINE ON Makeup to make you blinding! We all know the feeling of a killer highlighter to accentuate your sharpest features, but there are other ways to make you radiant. An easily applied balmy eyeshadow adds shine and gloss to wake up your look, and glitter gel smudged underneath your eyes can hide dark circles. High-shine lip gloss circa-2005 is also making a comeback to complement this year’s trend.

Rather than a thick, goopy mask, the KANA lavender sleep mask dries without leaving sticky residue, leaving skin feeling firm and protected. A DOPE NEW WAY TO DO SKINCARE CBD might be exactly what you need in your skincare routine You might have heard about CBD (short for cannabidiol) being used to treat various health and medical issues, like pain and anxiety. As it turns out, CBD might be your ticket to clearer, calmer skin, too. CBD products are taking over the skincare world and proving themselves to be beneficial additives to skin lotions, face creams, and serums. CBD oil can be extracted from the hemp plant but don’t worry, hemp derived CBD is legal in all fifty states. This ‘highly’ effective ingredient won’t actually get you high, but it’s perfect for people looking to reap the natural benefits without the mind-altering effects of marijuana. CBD has also gained popularity due to its remarkable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Antioxidants work to counter signs of aging skin using its essential fatty acids, which increases your skin’s elasticity and hydration and gives skin the appearance of a youthful glow. Research has shown that it lessens the severity of wrinkles and brightens skin. Acne can also be tackled with the help of CBD. Since acne is an inflammatory condition, the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD are helpful in visibly reducing the appearance of breakouts. It’s especially calming to skin redness, often caused by irritated skin as a result of acne and other skin conditions. Stock up on CBD skincare products while you can, because we think it’s worth the hype.

WHY YOU NEED A SHOWER HEAD FILTER ASAP Hard water is ruining your skin and hair.

Anyone who isn’t a Florida native, or has ever washed their hair in a state with soft water, knows how much worse your hair feels after a wash in the relentless Florida water. Dryness, lack of shine, and rough texture are a few of the results of poor water quality on your skin and hair. You might be thinking, “I haven’t noticed these gnarly effects on my delicate strands,” but after a single wash under a filtered shower head, we think you’ll know exactly what we’re talking about! Florida water is considered ‘hard’ because it is a Karstic State, meaning that a large portion of the land is limestone. Much of this limestone dissolves in the water, making it rich in minerals like calcium and magnesium. Not only do these minerals make sink water taste undrinkable, but they cause serious damage to skin and hair health overtime. Hair products like shampoo get stuck in your hair when you shower with hard water, and never completely wash out. This is caused by excess

minerals reacting with hair soap to form calcium and magnesium salts, which don’t dissolve easily. This can create a build-up of product and minerals in the hair, leading to a hard film lining on the hair and scalp, making hair feel rougher, tangled, and more prone to breakage. Colored hair is also at risk to fade more quickly when washed regularly with hard water. Why pay your hairstylist a pretty penny, only to ruin the beautiful radiance of your hair color in just a few washes? These same minerals leave a coating on skin, making it dry and dull. Additionally, hard water can be irritating to sensitive skin because it can cause itching, peeling, and other forms of breakage. A shower head filter is the perfect solution to weed out unwanted minerals and chemicals that are detrimental to our bodies. Once you have peace of mind that the water you bathe in is clear, you can feel free to enjoy every shower with the confidence that you’re bringing your skin and hair back to life.

PEOPLE

Bromances aren’t new. Early American presidents often wrote endearing letters to other politicians and close male companions, like Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. However, after WWII, homohysteria drastically changed masculinity norms, and male friendships suffered as a result. In recent years, male friendships have come back into the spotlight with high-profilers Obama and Joe Biden, James Franco and Seth Rogan, and even fictional characters like The Hangover posse (yes, even Allan).

Bromance over Romance? What changing relationships mean for men and women. By Khadejah Khan

According to a study of 30 diverse, straight college males, men prefer bromance over romance. Men reported feeling like they can unabashedly be themselves with their bro. They feel less judged by their close male friends and engage in “no-boundaries” behavior, such as sharing secrets, expressing anxieties and love, or platonically sharing a bed. The participants also reported expressing emotions physically by hugging or cuddling, and they felt secure divulging personal health issues in their bromances. Men also reported feeling like they have to be more “manly” in their romantic relationships, and thus aren’t emotionally fulfilled with their romantic partners. It is clear, then, that men are more wholly satisfied with their male friendships than their romantic relationships. Bromances are a progressive step forward in redefining masculinity and eradicating toxic ideals of what it is to “be a man.” It fosters conflict resolution, as some participants reported it’s easier to confront and forgive your bro. It also encourages emotional vulnerability, stability, and growth with familiar people, especially for those men who aren’t comfortable being emotionally intimate with women. Though bromances can be fulfilling and healthy for men, researchers do have some reservations. Men in the study sometimes used sexist and contemptuous language when referring to their romantic partners. They also displayed an “us and them” mentality that seemed to favor their bros over their romantic partners. This can be particularly deconstructive if bros foster bad behavioral patterns that can impact their romantic relationships, such as dishonesty and unaccountability.

YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO RICH OR TOO THIN. B Y D AW N H A R R I S S H E R L I N G , M . D . , F. A . C . P.

Or at least that’s what American Wallis Simpson, best known for marrying into the British royal family and causing the king to renounce his throne, thought, and to whom the quote is attributed. While the first part of the statement is for the politicians to sort out, the second is at least partially, a medical question. As we ponder our New Year’s resolutions— which we may have already given up on—the question of what size we should be comes up for many. “This year I will lose ten or twenty or more pounds!” is a familiar declaration at the approach of the new year—whether for health or appearance’s sake. It may be a mantra that is repeated from year to year and somehow never attained. Diets rarely work. Ms. Simpson, however, actually did achieve both of her goals of wealth and thinness, and lived to nearly ninety years of age. So, was she right? Should we all be striving to be thin and then thinner? Well, there is reasonable scientific data to argue otherwise. While it is clear that obesity is dangerous to our health, a few extra pounds may not be. Though many animal studies have shown increased longevity in those given calorierestricted diets throughout their lives, these studies were historically done in small, shortlived animals like mice and rats. More recently, when larger primate studies started to produce data on calorie-restricted diets, the results were conflicting. While clear benefits could be found in a study where monkeys were fed a highly processed diet, with those being fed less of it living longer, when a whole-foods type diet was utilized in another study, there was no longevity advantage between underfed and well-fed monkeys.1

The monkey studies may be telling us something we already know—if you want to live longer, stop eating highly processed foods. According to a 2018 study from the Harvard School of Public Health, eating foods that closely adhere to a Mediterranean-type diet or other traditional foods type diets, is one factor that helps increase longevity. The other factors listed by the study include never smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation, exercising at least 30 minutes a day, and keeping a body weight in the normal range, which was defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 18.5 to 24.9.2 But wait! Isn’t that still pretty thin? Actually, no. That’s a big range of normal. For a woman who is 5 foot, 3 inches, that translates to a weight range of 110 to 140 pounds. And there isn’t much to say that a svelte 110 is better than a hearty 140 from a health perspective. For a man who is 5 foot 10 inches, that’s a weight range of about 130 to 175 pounds. And if you aren’t putting the weight into your midsection, going above a BMI of 25 may be okay too. In yet another study, being in the normal weight range or even underweight (which has been shown to produce a lower life expectancy in many studies), is more risky than being slightly overweight, having a BMI of around 27.5, if there is more fat around the waist area.3 And this makes sense if you think about physically active people who carry more of the weight in their limbs versus physically inactive people who tend to be paunchy around their midsections. In actual poundage, this means that 5 foot 3 inch woman could weigh 155 pounds and the 5 foot 10 inch man could weigh 195 pounds and be healthier than underweight or even “normal” weight men and women, provided they are pretty active with minimal gut fat.

This doesn’t mean we should give up on New Year’s resolutions completely, but maybe we could strive for healthier goals in 2020. Getting fit through physical activity and eating as few processed foods as we are able are definite improvements upon starvation diets and temporary weight loss. As for appearance, the glow of good health at any size will always be more beautiful than the hollowed out gaze of deprivation. And remember that Harvard study? Having a drink (that’s one, maybe two for men) now and again may be good for us too. So, you can embrace a little extra weight if you happen to have it, grab a drink, and say “cheers” to a happy and healthy 2020! Then, hit the gym tomorrow. 1 Mattison, J., Colman, R., Beasley, T. et al. Caloric restriction improves health and survival of rhesus monkeys. A New Take on Meat:

The Rise of Cultured Meat and Plant-Based Meat Alternatives

The future of protein is calling, and she wants her animals back. Animal meat is on its way out, while meat substitutes are taking over by mimicking the taste and texture of true meat, while cutting out human health detriments, animal cruelty, and harmful environmental impacts. Over the last few years, the artificial meat industry has skyrocketed in popularity among Americans. Both cultured and plant-based meat alternatives are viable options for cutting out farm-sourced meat all together. The five building blocks of meat are protein, fat, minerals, carbohydrates, and water. Plant-based meat, like Beyond Meat, sources these building blocks from plants rather than animals to create equally delicious, counterfeit meat that is perfectly vegan! By replacing animal sourced ingredients with natural ones like peas, coconut oil, iron, and beet juice, Beyond Meat has created a blueprint for a better way to feed the planet. Improving human health as well as addressing environmental issues, are two of the main elements of the Beyond Meat mission. One Beyond Burger claims to have equal or greater amounts of protein than one animal meat burger. Additionally, its natural ingredients, lack of saturated fats, antibiotics, hormones, and cholesterol, make it a significantly healthier alternative to animal meat, which, over time, can raise cholesterol and increase chances of diabetes in consumers. If you’re still not sold on plant based meat, consider this – it takes 99% less water, 93% less land, 90% fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and 46% less energy to create a Beyond Burger than a beef burger. The environmental benefits alone are a huge

reason to incorporate plant-based meat into your diet. Interested in trying it for yourself? You can find Beyond Meat products nationwide at restaurants like Dunkin’, Subway, Burgerfi, and even at most Publix, Wal-Mart, and Target stores. Cultured meat, like Memphis Meats, is engineered from animal cells, which is then cultivated into edible beef, chicken, and duck meat. There’s no need to raise and process living animals for this method, which makes it morally appealing to those who care about the lives of animals, but aren’t quite ready to sacrifice a big, juicy steak in exchange for a veggie burger. If a lab grown chicken sandwich doesn’t appeal to your taste buds, recognize that Memphis Meats is not a meat alternative because it is still true animal meat. It’s not considered vegetarian or vegan for this reason, but it does remove the element of immoral animal practices from its process. All that’s needed to create the meat is cells from animal tissue, which can be retrieved harmlessly and multiplied to grow substantial pieces of meat without slaughtering an animal. Like plant-based meat, it’s also better for the environment by using significantly less land, water, and energy to create it than traditionally farmed meat. Tasting the meat might be challenging, as the concept is still slowly growing and it’s not widely available to the public. One of the major hurdles associated with this type of meat is the cost of production – currently running at around $2,400 to produce one pound of meat. Once the cost of production is regulated, Memphis Meats are likely to take over the meat industry one petri dish at a time.

OF THE YEAR

In prefacing this introduction, we’d like to offer an observation, which should be of interest to all. Regardless of medical school class rankings, graduates are all referred to as “DOCTOR.” With this revelation, we should all know that when choosing a physician, one must accept responsibility for adequately researching the doctor he or she is considering. Within our present day society, most licensed to practice medicine are truly miracle workers whether they are completely restructuring someone’s face or saving a life. As much as we realize that every physician is an asset to our

community, we also know that some have established themselves at the top of their profession and are considered special; these are the ‘elite,’ the very best of the best. When seeking perfection, we search for the professional who has made it his or her life goal to excel within a field of specialization through many years of study, dedication and determination, continually challenging themselves to advance their knowledge; these brilliant human beings not only save lives but also enrich their communities with a skill set second to none. Beyond this and in order to stay abreast of the latest, almost daily changing

medical advancements, the ‘elite’ undergo rigorous maintenance, updating through seminars, conferences and advanced studies to keep current with new technology and procedures. In adding our ‘Orlando’s Doctors of the Year’ section with this issue, we present a group of physicians, all of whom are reputable, Board Certified in their areas of expertise, extremely well recognized within our community and chosen by their peers. Our objective is to initiate a continuing dialogue with our readers, with an aim toward personalizing some of the finest doctors available.

Associates in Dermatology Dr. Michael Steppie

Every year millions of Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer. Thankfully, the dedicated elite dermatologists who make up the Skin Cancer Foundation’s Amonette Circle are creating a brighter future for us all. One such physician is Orlando dermatologist, Michael Steppie, who has been actively involved as a member for the past 10 years. As president and medical director of Associates in Dermatology, a leading dermatology practice celebrating its 30th anniversary, Dr. Steppie and his talented team proudly deliver an unrivaled level of care to patients across 16 convenient Central Florida locations. Dr. Steppie is not your average dermatologist. This Mohs micrographic surgeon is on the forefront of skin cancer treatment and has been engaged in advancing dermatologic research for years. In 2019, he collaborated with Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute at Lake Nona on a breakthrough study on melanoma and another one on vitiligo. Last month, Dr. Steppie’s opinions were featured in a survey on acne with data collected from 64 dermatologists worldwide. Moreover, Dr. Steppie has been honored with multiple Distinguished Physician Recognition Awards from the AMA, the American Association of Physicians Specialists, and the American College of Physicians. He also received multiple Patients’ Choice Awards from Vitals over the past ten years and was recently featured as a five-year honoree.

When Dr. Steppie was asked to provide three important dermatology tips to commit to in 2020, he replied: • Get a Skin Check - “It could save your life. Remember, you are living in the Sunshine State and a recent study concluded that over 7% of Floridians have some form of skin cancer. In fact, our state has the highest rate of skin cancer, so everyone should keep this in mind. Although melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer, it too is treatable when diagnosed early.” • Take Good Care of Your Skin - “Your skin is your largest organ, yes an organ. Unfortunately, people tend to forget about it. So, take good care of it at all times and routinely apply sun protection.” When asked which sunscreen he recommends, Dr. Steppie suggested using SPF 50+ sunscreen formulas like those in his stateof-the-art skincare regimen -Ethereal Beauty. “Those products contain physical sunscreens and are also enriched with antioxidants and emollients to deliver optimal protection,” he replied. • Put Your Best Face Forward in 2020 - “Now is the time to seek expert advice, so you can look as young as you feel,” Steppie said. “In addition to our expertise in skin cancer treatment and general dermatology, many of our dermatology providers are proficient and passionate about cosmetic dermatology and our numerous rejuvenating procedures.”

Wendy Chene Huhn, MD, FACE The Diabetes & Endocrine Center of Orlando, P.A. My medical career might have started at a young age with my reputation of being a math and science nerd in grade school, but being called names did not deter me from being the first one in my extended family to escape very humble beginnings and go to college. Starting as a premedical student at the University of Florida and graduating from Occidental College in Los Angeles, I returned to Florida and attended medical school at the University of South Florida College of Medicine. At graduation, my classmates teased me about getting two degrees; medical and Mrs. degrees after marrying my classmate, Dr. John Huhn. We matched our residencies at the University of Virginia and I completed Internal Medicine training and then attained one of two coveted endocrine fellowship positions at UVA; one of the nation’s top programs in Diabetes & Endocrinology.

Leaving the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains in 1992, we moved to my husband’s hometown where I joined the Diabetes & Endocrine Center of Orlando and remain there today as an owner. My full-service endocrine practice specializes in state-of-the-art evaluation and management of adults with diabetes, pre-diabetes/ metabolic syndrome, thyroid and parathyroid conditions, obesity, lipid disorders, osteoporosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome and conditions related to pituitary and adrenal gland abnormalities. We use a patient-centered team approach to deliver comprehensive care in which providers work together with medical assistances, diabetes nurse educators, dietary counselors, a thyroid

ultrasonographer and lab technicians operating our onsite fully licensed and accredited laboratory. For diabetes management, we provide patient specific diabetes education, diagnostic continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to assess diet and medication effects on glucose trends, insulin pump therapy and personal CGM training with in-office educators. We have a personalized weight loss program using delicious ITG diet products and body composition analysis. Our newest “lab” assistant position was filled by Holly, my English Labrador retriever who lifts patients’ and staff spirits and makes sure I get my daily exercise. Tangible accomplishments I’ve earned during my career, like medical degrees, becoming a Fellow in the American College of Endocrinology, and receiving Top Doctor awards among others are important to me, but even more gratifying is seeing my diabetic patients achieve excellent blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels granting them a longer, healthier life free from complications or getting that woman’s call reporting she’s pregnant after restoring normal thyroid or pituitary hormone levels. No trophy replaces the satisfaction of rendering a college student cancer free after early identification of a cancerous thyroid nodule by ultrasound or alleviating the burden of multiple insulin shots and finger stick glucose tests after my Type 1 diabetic obtains an integrated insulin pump system. These outcomes and more are the accomplishments this science nerd appreciates!

OF THE YEAR

Mattia Spinal Care & Rehab Center, P.A. Gerald R. Mattia D.C., Director

Gerald R Mattia D.C. has been practicing chiropractic for forty three years. Even before that his life has not been ordinary. At the age of fifteen he had been given 6 months to live. “I was born with a severe heart condition called aortic stenosis.” People suffering from this condition have an aortic valve in their heart that gradually degenerates and therefore the heart cannot function properly. Heart surgery in the sixties was not as successful as today. He also had bad allergies. His mother was not ready to give up. On a friend’s recommendation, she took her son to a chiropractor. “The aortic valve stopped closing by 92 percent and my allergies were gone.” Dr. Mattia said. He was able to live to the age of 35 when he received his first new aortic valve and the success rate of heart surgery was higher. Dr. Mattia became a chiropractor because of this. He earned his chiropractic degree from New York Chiropractic College and opened a practice in 1977. Dr. Mattia practiced in New Jersey from 1977 to 2001. During that time he received many awards: Chiropractor of the Year 1996 and Sports Chiropractor of the year several times. He was appointed to the Board of Chiropractic Examiners, on which he served for six years, by the governor of New Jersey. He was also a board of director for the International Chiropractic Association and the Northeast Regional Director. Dr. Mattia has been the president of International Chiropractic Association Sports Health and Fitness Council from 1996-2011 during which he joined Arnold Schwarzenegger every year in Columbus Ohio for the ICA Fitness Symposium. The Symposium is held in conjuncture with the Schwarzenegger Fitness Weekend. In his quest to provide clients with the best preventative and therapeutic chiropractic care available, Dr. Mattia studies research, treatments and technologies from around the world. Consequently his office houses some of the most unique, cutting edge technology available: decompression therapy machines which help with disc problems in the low back and neck eliminating the need for surgery, the LPG key module for endermotherapy, class 4 laser to promote healing , and Spine Force which offers non static exercise for patients and helps rehabilitate and develop muscle strength for the core and intrinsic muscle of the spine. It was developed in France and Dr. Mattia helped introduce it in the United States. These technologies have come to complement the fundamental chiropractic adjustment. In 2001 Dr Mattia retired from his NJ practice and moved to Florida to begin semi retirement. But the quiet time did not last too long. Outside of the office, Dr. Mattia does power walking and likes to travel and loves golf and baseball. All during his career Dr. Mattia has taken care of many athletes from middle school to professional as well as regular clientele. His love for sports has helped him understand that spinal care for athletes is required for better performance and nervous system function. Dr. Mattia practices with his wife Paulette Mattia D.C, and Guillermo Nazario D.C. Dr. Mattia has helped many chiropractic college graduates begin their careers by having them work with him and gain experience. Dr. Mattia also has begun a new venture with Daniel Arnold M.D. consisting of non surgical regenerative therapy for knees and other joints at viscogen. Dr. Mattia has coached Babe Ruth Baseball, sponsored Team Gamez Foundation Chipping for Children, Central Florida YMCA, Orlando Union Rescue Mission and Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe. Dr. Mattia’s love for his practice and clients is apparent in his contagious enthusiasm and liveliness. “ The best part of my practice is the fact that people come to our practice and get better naturally, without medication. Touching thousands of lives over the years with the benefits of chiropractic is a professional achievement. “Living to the age of 69 when I was supposed to die at fifteen is a personal achievement. A great cardiac surgeon, Kevin Accola M.D., and chiropractic care and prayers saved my life.”

As a doctor, I have seen a variety of patients throughout my career. Each patient has their own unique story and healthcare needs. I like to spend time with my patients and give them a personalized evaluation. My name is Doctor Mahnaz Qayyum. I have two offices in Orlando and Davenport . I am affiliated with Advent Health. I also teach medical, ARNP and PA students. Not only do I deal with a patient’s day to day requirements, but I specialize in anti-aging and weight loss. My philosophy is to establish and maintain the best quality of life. At first, I get to know the patient and their background . The initial visit is half an hour, and I will ask the patient about their requirements, answer any questions they might have, and try to have them create a plan to achieve their medical and life goals. You may want to know how I handle the complex issue of anti-aging. The goal is to achieve longevity, happiness, and overall lead a healthy lifestyle. Did you ever look in the mirror and wonder “Could I lose twenty pounds”? I can help you achieve that. First and foremost comes diet and exercise. Patients are asked detailed questions about their lifestyle and eating habits . It is essential to take these into account along with their personal habits as well as personality, likes and dislikes. I have achieved this with hundreds of patients in my practice. Approximately 40% of my practice is now weight loss. Once patients have had their medical conditions and weight optimized, we can discuss body sculpting and facial contouring if the patient desires it. This is achieved through multiple modalities such as:Coolsculpting , laser Liposuction, skin resurfacing, skin tightening, Botox, and fillers. These are all non-invasive procedures with no downtime. | ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Your mouth is systemically connected to the rest of your body. You can’t be healthy without a healthy head. In the US, heart disease will take more lives than all cancers combined. (1) Did you know those with coronary heart disease have an increased risk of death for every tooth lost?(2) Periodontal Disease is the loss of the structures (bone and tissues) that support our teeth. This disease is directly linked to artery inflammation making one twice as likely to develop heart disease. (3) The CDC states nearly half of adult Americans have Periodontitis, the most severe form of Periodontal disease. (4) This type is also linked to cancers, Alzheimer’s, Diabetes, Respiratory disease and pregnancy problems. (5) Why is this important? Because 80% of adults over 35 years old, which is most likely the reader of this article, have some form of Periodontal Disease? (6) We must be aware so we can take action. We cannot separate our mouths from the rest of our body, It’s the largest access;

it’s the door. Just like a nitroglycerin tab placed under the tongue can stop a heart attack, why couldn’t oral bacteria enter the bloodstream through the same pathway? Research shows that 120 diseases can be diagnosed in the mouth and that 90% of systemic disease have an oral footprint? Yes, systemic disease will show up in the mouth. Dentistry is about more than just our teeth; it’s our health which is why, “A Healthy Mouth IS a Healthy You®” INSPIRED PURPOSE.ORG

Dr. Pamela Trout knows that “kids are not just small adults.” From the beginning of her career in medicine, she has focused on Pediatrics and meeting the needs of her young patients at every age, and every developmental stage. With DOC PAM (Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine), she is branding a new type of practice. You might just recognize this old-fashioned style of medicine: the Pediatrician created a medical home that was not constrained by short appointment timeslots or the pressures of productivity.

be Chief Resident and Junior Faculty at APH. In 2006, Dr. Trout went out into the world of outpatient care. She has experienced both working for a large private practice, as well as in a clinic affiliated with a large children’s hospital. During this time, Dr. Trout had also developed a niche in working with patients with Eating Disorders. She earned her certification as a CEDS (Certified Eating Disorder Specialist) in 2014. In 2015, she decided it was time to embark on a new adventure: private practice.

Pam Trout’s journey in medicine started in 1993 at the University of Miami. She studied Microbiology and Immunology, graduating Cum Laude. Then, graduating with Honors from the University of Kentucky College of Medicine, she had that “ah-ha” moment in which she realized that Pediatrics was what she was born to do. Dr. Trout then moved to Orlando to start her career. She completed her Pediatric Residency Program at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Women and Children. “See one, do one, teach one” has often been the mantra of young doctors learning the skills to be great. Pam Trout chose the satisfaction of “teaching many” as she stayed a 4th year to

At Doc PAM Pediatrics, parents feel comfortable with Dr. Trout’s down-to-earth, realistic approach to providing familycentered care. On any given day, she may be helping with homework, reading books in the lobby, putting together puzzles on the floor, “exercising” with her patients, or providing “homework” at check-ups to encourage new healthy habits. Anyone can say they like kids. But if you spend a day in her office, you will see love in action. “You have Brains in your Head. You have Feet in your Shoes. Making Miracles

Annual Christmas Luncheon Hosted by Miracle Makers By Courtney Caggiano

On December 23rd, Miracle Makers Foundation honored the families of premature babies in the Orlando area with their annual Christmas Luncheon at the Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies. During this heartwarming time of gratitude and appreciation, over 220 guests, including hardworking staff and devoted parents of children in the NICU, enjoyed a delicious meal hosted by Miracle Makers, an inspiring nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide support for the families of preterm babies.

THE MOST EXCITING PART OF THE HOLIDAYS IS TO BE ABLE TO GIVE BACK AND CELEBRATE WITH THE COMMUNITY.

100

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

Since 2014, Miracle Makers founder Maya Tharoo has worked toward ensuring that all children born prematurely receive the care and attention they deserve, a cause very near to her heart. Born premature at 28 weeks, weighing only 1 lb & 14 oz, Maya’s life has been a true miracle, and she has dedicated herself to helping children who are going through the challenges that she has overcome. Through the years, Maya’s family has experienced the joy of watching their child become a world changer, a joy they long to bring to parents everywhere. At the young age of 9, Maya, along with her parents, Abdullah and Taz Tharoo, and her grandfather, Abdul Tharoo, created Miracle Makers. Together, the Tharoo family has served parents and loved ones of premature children in all walks of life. Today, Maya volunteers at Winnie Palmer Hospital once a month, speaking to families in the NICU and offering her story as a beacon of hope.

Maya Tharoo served as host for the annual luncheon, which was a remarkable gift to the parents who spent their Christmas in the hospital with their children. Along with enjoying a wonderful meal generously prepared by local restaurants including Bartaco, Dragonfly Robata Grill & Sushi, and Rainforest Café, the guests in attendance gained valuable insight and inspiration and celebrated the precious lives of their babies. The families also received plush toys and gift cards donated by Landry’s, Inc., which Maya and her friends hand-packaged, one of the young Miracle Makers founder’s memorable moments from the event. “The most exciting part of the holidays is to be able to give back and celebrate with the community,” Maya says. “It is so rewarding that I have this opportunity to provide joy and hope to these families, especially at a time when it can be difficult for them to find that hope for themselves. We are very fortunate indeed to be able to celebrate Christmas with the Winnie Palmer Hospital family.” To learn more about Miracle Makers, visit miraclemakersfoundation.com.

Ly T. Nguyen, MD Eye Florida Dr. Nguyen’s first introduction into the world of ophthalmology came when she received some bad news: her father needed cataract surgery. At that time Dr. Nguyen was still a medical student with an undecided specialty at the University of Hawai’i John A. Burns School of Medicine. It was this chance encounter with her father’s cataract surgeon, the late Dr. Jorge Camara, that would eventually pave Dr. Nguyen’s path in ophthalmology. With Dr. Camara as her mentor, she developed an aptitude for medical research and publication. Together with other international ophthalmology residents, Dr. Nguyen published articles in prominent ophthalmology journals about a new finding in Asian patients called involutional lateral entropion, and the use of a computer-assisted image-guided system (InstaTrak) in orbital surgery. She also published research findings on public health issues among Vietnamese immigrants in Hawai’i. Dr. Nguyen went on to do her ophthalmology residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. In her second year of residency, her personal life took an unexpected turn and finishing residency seemed like a distant dream. “I didn’t want to give up though. I had to stay focused on finishing,” Dr. Nguyen recalls. Though it wasn’t easy, Dr. Nguyen persevered and completed her residency in three years. She received a

Resident Research Award, and became an internationally recognized doctor, author, and speaker with publications in peerreviewed journals including the American Journal of Ophthalmology and Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery. After graduating, Dr. Nguyen moved to West Palm Beach, Florida, and worked as an associate at Mittleman Eye Center. Needing work-life balance as a mother to her young son, Dr. Nguyen combined the spirit of delivering better patient care and entrepreneurship by opening her own private practice, St. Cloud Eye Center, in an underserved community of Central Florida. With the growth of St. Cloud Eye Center, the practice was later renamed Eye Florida, and has expanded to a second location in Kissimmee. The team has now grown to over 20 members including optometrists and ophthalmologists. Later this year, Eye Florida will be opening a 5,000-squarefoot eye clinic at the St. Cloud Regional Medical Office Building, expanding services to include in-office dispensing and procedures. As a board-certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Nguyen specializes in cataract, oculoplastics and minimally invasive eye surgery including facial rejuvenation procedures. Eye Florida also offers a number of other services, including routine eye exams, screening for eye

disease, and comprehensive testing— always with a focus on exceptional patient care in an inviting environment. During her free time, Dr. Nguyen likes to snowboard with her now teenage son. She also fills her time with zumba, golfing, and reading. One of her dreams is to write a memoir about the time her parents and siblings escaped Vietnam by boat in the early 1980s and her family’s journey through Hong Kong’s refugee camp. “These memories are stories of where we came from. These are important lessons of hope, determination, and overcoming adversity that I hope I can pass on,” says Dr. Nguyen. Dr. Nguyen says her focus on becoming a better physician and her unwavering determination are lessons from her parents. Reflecting on her day-to-day interactions with her patients: “I love it when, after having cataract surgery, my patients say to me, ‘Doctor! I am so happy that I can see the world again!’ I want my patients to have the same positive experience with me as my father did that day with Dr. Camara.”

Timothy W. Lincoln, OD, PA Orlando Eye Center Dr. Tim Lincoln attended graduate school in Chicago, IL at the Illinois College of Optometry, graduating in May 1986. While attending ICO, he did his externship at the Naval Station Great Lakes. This gave an experience that was complimentary to the clinical rotations at school. Shortly after graduating, Dr. Lincoln travelled to China and several countries in southeast Asia to evaluate eye care delivery. A paper comparing those to the U.S. was submitted to Review of Optometry for publication. A lifelong dream was to practice in Florida, so in 1987 he moved to Bradenton, FL practicing with a group before moving to Orlando in 1989. After working in the commercial setting for 10 years, he decided to start his own private practice and Orlando Eye Center was established. Orlando Eye Center opened in August 2000 and is located on the north end of Hunter’s Creek at Deerfield Blvd and John Young parkway (N/W corner, next to Buff-It’s), inside the John Young Medical and Professional facility. This location also has other tenants, including a pediatrician, chiropractor, and dentist. The practice is very family oriented and has a friendly, patient-focused atmosphere. Dr. Lincoln strives to learn of each patients needs before offering any recommendations or treatment options, accommodating patients both with and without insurance. According to the insurance provider, Vision Service Plan (VSP), he has been the top VSP provider in Florida for many years as a single doctor office.

Dr. Lincoln prefers to give credit to his wife, Gail, whom he met in Chicago at Optometry school along with the well trained and caring staff. This includes Brenda, Michelle, Megan and Kathy. Even though “Dr. Gail” no longer sees patients on a regular basis, she is an integral part of the practice, taking care of the details which help a private practice run smoothly and efficiently. Having a strong faith in God and His direction made the decision easy to follow and start a private practice. After looking back over the last 20 years, Dr. Lincoln is excited to take on advancements in the years to come, along with welcoming the addition of his son, and possibly youngest daughter into the practice! Dr. Tim enjoys boating, traveling with his family, golfing, and the occasional classic car show. New patients are welcome to Orlando Eye Center and are cared for with the same enthusiasm as established patients. Dr.’s Tim & Gail Lincoln and the staff pray that 2020 and this decade will provide positive opportunities and good health to the families of Central Florida!

Optometry

Sheri McGurk, OD Winter Park Eyewear Dr. Sheri McGurk’s interest in eyes started in elementary school. In 1st grade, she badly wanted to wear glasses like her mom, but didn’t need them. Then a failed vision screening in 5th grade resulted in her first eye exam and a REAL pair of glasses, which seemed like magic. She could once again clearly see the board at school and individual leaves on trees, instead of blurry blobs. And the headaches went away. A 7th grade school assignment on careers led her to spend the day with her optometrist at his office, looking through the instruments and helping to make lenses for glasses. It was that day she decided to become an optometrist. Doing the “magic” of making people see clearly and comfortably is Dr. McGurk’s favorite part of practicing optometry. “If your vision is messed up, your whole day is messed up,” she stressed. “Having comfortable eyes and clear vision allows people to do their days more accurately and efficiently, AND in a better mood, which benefits us all!” She talks with each patient about how they use their eyes, so she can determine the best lens prescription for the glasses. Their office has a large, constantly changing selection of eyeglass frames from which to choose for the finished product. Nearly half of her patients also wear contact lenses. Utilizing a large supply of in-stock trial lenses, patients can try out lenses for several days before deciding to purchase. “Contacts,” she said, “are now more comfortable than ever, and can give more accurate correction with complicated prescriptions like bifocals and astigmatism.” She said patients that previously weren’t able to wear contacts are more likely to be successful with the newer lens types. Seeing clearly is one part of the vision exam, the other is eye health. Dr. McGurk teaches patients about nutrition and lifestyle choices made throughout life that can have beneficial effects on eye health. A member of the Ocular Wellness & Nutrition Society, she believes taking correct actions while younger can prevent or minimize vision and health issues down the road. Growing up in Iowa, Dr. McGurk obtained her undergraduate education there, before heading to Indiana University School of Optometry, where she received her Doctorate degree. After a spring break in Ft. Lauderdale, she decided she’d had enough of the cold Photo by: Kimberly Jefcoat Midwest, and moved to Florida after graduating in 1986. She’s been at the Winter Park Eyewear location for 22 years. “I’m now seeing the children of patients who were children themselves when I first saw them years ago. It makes me feel a little old, but I love it!” She said she’s so thankful to her 7th grade self for putting her on this path.

This serves as an alternative option to traditional dilation of the eyes and is ideal for workday appointments. They also house an Icare Tonometer as an alternative to the dreaded “air puff test” for glaucoma screenings. “We’re definitely one of the few offices in Orlando that offer newer technologies in eye care,” says Dr. Jagani. Inspired by his time volunteering in Morocco, Dr. Jagani works with the Global Kindness Foundation, providing optical services to people worldwide, such as orphans in Iraq. He and the team at Baldwin Park Eye Care also work with Lions Club International by collecting old glasses and prescriptions to be recycled and repurposed anew.
