off the event with top restaurants serving great food, a premium brand open bar, a live band and VIP gift bags. The following day, the Golf Classic at Bella Collina Golf Club brought the community together for a friendly round of golf, which raised proceeds in support of the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. Sunday’s Festivals of Speed Display of Exotics proved to be the highlight of the weekend as guests experienced a fabulous display of vintage and contemporary aircrafts, the world’s most exotic cars, custom created motorcycles, high performance boats and the finest luxury lifestyle product displays. The legend behind one of America’s top shoe and lifestyle brands caused quite the frenzy when he made a special appearance at The Florida Mall on December 12th. Dillards was proud to welcome fashion footwear mogul Steve Madden to their department store for a highly anticipated meet-and-greet event. Hundreds of fans and fashion enthusiasts eagerly waited in line for the exclusive opportunity to meet Steve and receive his autograph. Considered a pioneer in creative shoe design and lifestyle branding in the 21st century, Steve Madden has given young, fashion-forward men and women a unique way to express their individuality through style for the past two decades. The afternoon was hosted by television personality Julissa Bermudez and all guests in attendance received a complimentary t-shirt and tote bag just for coming. Customers who made any Steve Madden purchase during the event also got to go home with a special gift. It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the city of Orlando when The Central Florida Ballet hosted their annual production of The Nutcracker! From December 17th-20th, The Dr. Phillips Center welcomed audiences to the Walt Disney Theater to enjoy the enchanting production of everyone’s favorite Christmas Eve tale. On December 12th and 13th, prior to the Dr. Phillips show, members of the community poured into the Linda Chapin Theatre at the Orange County Convention Center for three special 15th anniversary showings of the famous show. A beloved holiday tradition, Orlando Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker was accompanied by the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and brought Christmas to life as they told the story of Clara’s magical journey on Christmas Eve. When Christmas is right around the corner, the Who’s Who of Orlando know that can only mean one thing! On December 19th, the official Orlando Style Magazine Holiday Party returned to the City Beautiful for an elegant night of celebration. The event is a favorite 18 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
among members of the community who work closely with Style Magazine’s Founders Sven and Cathleen Bode. Once again this year, the couple graciously welcomed employees and close friends into their home to say ‘Thank You’ for a successful year and to toast to the future. Champagne was flowing and delicious catered hors d’oeuvres from Puff ‘n Stuff were enjoyed as the intimate group mingled and chatted late into the evening. Much to the delight of all in attendance, guests of the VIP event were also treated to a special appearance of the Bode’s precious, gorgeous new twins, Aiden and Audrey. The evening ended with Cathleen’s annual raffle giveaway, which featured fantastic gift cards and certificates to a selection of Orlando’s finest venues! On December 31st, the new year was celebrated in style by all in attendance at Bella Collina’s New Year’s Eve Party. Bella Collina is the quintessential private golf club community located just 20 minutes west of Orlando. On the last day of 2015, guests showed up to the venue to celebrate the final hours of the year with exquisite hors d’oeuvres, a four course dinner and plenty of exciting entertainment. Dinner guests were treated to a phenomenal four course menu that included Golden Raisins with Grains of Paradise Emulsion, Shrimp Cocktail with Horseradish Cocktail Sauce, Grilled Beef Tenderloin & Herb Crusted Sea Bass, Truffle Whipped Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables, a Delectable Dessert Buffet and more. Attendees ended the elegant evening by dancing straight into the New Year with the help of live music by the Leonard Brothers Band. On January 16th, a new type of play debuted in Orlando and took the Central Florida community to new heights! “Rise, An Acrobatic Play,” is a unique, high-energy, aweinspiring production that combines theatre, acrobatics and dance for an entirely new theatrical experience. The futuristic coming of age story follows the lives of a group of high school students who dream of being world class entertainers. Attendees packed the Walt Disney Theater of the Dr. Phillips Center to watch the uplifting production, which was written and directed by four-time NCAA Gymnastics Champion Taqiy Abdullah-Simmons and choreographed by former USA Tumbling and Trampoline National Team Member Jeffrey Brown. Rise features local Central Florida performers Tiffany Lamwatt and Felix Betancourt who portray lead characters Courtney and Max. Guests were also treated to a special appearance by 2007 World Gymnastics Champion Shayla Worley as Julie. Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

TABLE FOR THREE THE MODERN DAY VIEW OF MONOGAMOUS RELATIONSHIPS By Mark NeJame / Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley
For quite some time, we’ve seen the veneer of traditional monogamous relationships being chipped away by social media, dating websites and apps such as Tinder or Match.com. Posting racy photos on Instagram, whether the user is in a relationship or not, has become totally acceptable. This new standard has provided outlets for restless husbands, wives, boyfriends and girlfriends to satiate their boredom while still remaining “faithful.” It’s not voyeurism, it’s social media! And a little “swipe right” every now and then is totally harmless! Sure we’ll go with that. But the statistics paint a different picture: participation in these “harmless” frolics may very well be the culprit for the plummeting popularity of the traditional monogamous relationship. It’s generally understood that traditional monogamous relationships are two people
who are committed emotionally and physically to one another. This commitment can be in or out of wedlock, although when legally-binding marriage is involved, the rules become more serious: marriage to more than one person at a time is illegal in all 50 states (distinguish this from religious cohabitation with multiple partners, which is constitutionally protected in some states). In the past few decades, Americans have become cynical when it comes to monogamous relationships, more specifically marriage: census data cited in a 2014 study by the Pew Research Center show that the number of married households fell to 50.5% in 2012 from a high of about 72% in 1960. The study notes that there a number 20 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
of cultural reasons for the shift away from marriage, particularly that American society is conflicted about the institution’s role in modern day life (SnapChat, anyone?). Either people are holding out for that “special someone” (census data indicates when people ages 25-34 reach their mid-40s and 50s, just 25% of them will be married), or the dream of the “white picket fence” is no longer the utopian goal. Whatever the reason – and there are a myriad of philosophies on this topic – dating websites are doing their homework and responding accordingly: In January 2016, The Atlantic reported that OkCupid, a popular online dating platform, is adding a feature tailor-made for polyamorous people.
The new setting allows users who are listed as “seeing someone,” “married,” or “in an open relationship” to link their profiles and search for other people to join in their relationship. According to OkCupid, 24% of its users are “seriously interested” in group sex and 42% would consider dating someone already involved in an open or polyamorous relationship. This is an 8% increase from five years ago, when a similar poll was conducted. Most notably, the amount of users who are exclusively committed to monogamy has fallen to 44%, a minority of all users (down substantially from 56% in 2010). “It seems that now people are more open to polyamory as a concept,” said Jimena Almendares, OkCupid’s chief product officer. Or maybe just more public about it.

Polyamorous dating sites have been around for years, but the launch of a polyamorous option on a truly mainstream platform like OkCupid is a first (most likely the first of many).

So far, society seems to have tacitly accepted the public unveiling of the new polyamorous frontier – no outrages, no critiques, no protests, and limited, if any, negative press has surfaced about the app’s new option. Perhaps because the concept isn’t that novel at all; it was just a well-kept secret. In fact, Psychology Today reported in 2014 that “sexually non-monogamous couples in the United States number in the millions.” With such an overwhelming population participating in non-monogamy, could it be possible that participants may start seeking equal marriage rights and abolishment of anti-polygamy laws? Only time will tell. But for now, read those profiles carefully, or you may just find yourself sitting at a table for three on Valentine’s Day. Mark NeJame

Love’s First
STING THE HISTORY OF CUPID By Courtney Caggiano
22 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
COVER STORY
“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind. Nor hath love’s mind of any judgement taste; Wings and no eyes figure unheedy haste. And therefore is love said to be a child Because in choice he is so oft beguiled.” -William Shakespeare, A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Many a romantic heart has claimed Shakespeare as the authority on the mysterious force of love, and as expressed in this excerpt from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the playwright has engraved the image of Cupid onto the hearts of cultures worldwide, a mythical being forever serving as an illustration of love’s sting. This Shakespearean stanza has become an eloquent excuse to attribute the blame of romantic misadventures to a winged arrow-shooting child, whose weaponry of choice seems to expose both true love’s innocence and the sentimental folly of fleeting emotions. Cupid is an international image of love, and thanks to Shakespeare, he has remained a figure that we still find on Valentine’s Day cards and the lips of lovers who fail to find a more realistic reason for their feelings of romance. However, it was centuries before Shakespeare when Cupid originally found his wings. According to mythology, Cupid was thought to be an ancient Roman god of love, and his mother was Venus. The mythical Cupid gained his reputation of love in a legendary story of his tragic bride, Psyche. Jealous of mortal Psyche’s beauty, Venus ordered Cupid to destroy her, but instead, he fell in love with her and took her as his wife. As a mortal being, Psyche could not look at Cupid, and as long as their eyes never met, she lived a happy life. However, when persuaded by her sisters, Psyche looked at Cupid, who punished her act by deserting her. The mortal Psyche found herself alone, with no sight of her beloved Cupid. Wandering the world in search of him, she came upon the temple of Venus.
The cruel goddess gave Psyche a series of dangerous tasks, convincing her this would bring her happiness. For her last task, Psyche was told to visit the underworld to retrieve a dose of the beauty of Proserpine, the wife of Pluto, and bring it back to Venus in a box she had been given. Told by Venus not to open the box, Psyche disobeyed as temptation came over her, and fell into a deadly slumber. Cupid found his bride’s lifeless body on the ground, and moved by her love for him, forgave her, as did Venus. Amazed at Psyche’s devotion to Cupid, the gods made her a goddess, and the immortal Psyche and Cupid were wed as equals. Even against his mother’s wishes, love prevailed in Cupid’s story. Although today Cupid is often viewed as a careless creature, the story of his forgiveness of Psyche originally cast a light of benevolence on the now-humorous character. As the centuries past, Cupid’s persona changed over time, but he always kept his wings, as well as his bow and arrows that pierce into the hearts of lovers-to-be. Historians have often attributed the winged nature of cupid to the flightiness of sensual emotions, which likely change one’s perception of his or her lover. In some myths, Cupid’s bow and arrow are accompanied by a torch, which symbolizes the love that inflames the innocent heart. So from Roman mythology to boxes of chocolate, Cupid remains a signature image in cultural romance, and the rest is history—well, mythology.

URBAIN 40 AMERICAN BRASSERIE AND LOUNGE HOW CHEF POINARD IS TRANSFORMING CLASSIC DISHES AND INTRODUCING A NEW DINING EXPERIENCE By Riesa Pascal
Sand Lake Road’s Restaurant Row is famous for
Blanches Lyonnaises, an elite society of chefs, Poinard has also won multiple awards including a James Beard Award and a 2011 Award of Distinction in the Epicurean Arts by the International Food, Wine & Travel Writers Association. Today Poinard, who counts one of France’s most famous chefs, Paul Bocuse, among his family friends and colleagues, partners with Boulevard Restaurants’ corporate chef Michael Rodriguez to develop new menu offerings and head Urbain 40’s devoted kitchen staff.
Urbain 40’s Executive Concept Chef Jean-Stephane Poinard grew up in the kitchen and was baptized, literally, in the dining room of his family’s French restaurant. Despite dabbling in other career areas first, Poinard’s passion for cooking and love for the slow-food movement couldn’t be denied. Before long, the fifth-generation chef had launched his own career running restaurants, catering to celebrities and patenting his own sandwich, the iBunn. A member of Les Toques

States, it’s no wonder that Urbain 40 has mastered the art of transforming continental and American classics into original creations. Eye-catching presentations of each dish will have you insisting on taking a photo of your meal before the exquisite scents and flavors draw you in, much to the delight of each and every mouthful. A savoury striped Bass Meuniere with cauliflower puree, shaved fennel and a lemon-butter confit will leave your mouth watering. A juicy steakburger on a brioche bun with Irish cheddar, candied onion jam, heirloom tomato, arugula and Béarnaise sauce will have you loosening a few notches on your belt. The dedicated Urbain 40 staff refuses to cut corners and boasts an impressive list of in-house made items. All pastas, including pappardelle and ravioli, are made in-house, and well as fresh baguettes and desserts. Pastry chef Amanda McFall creates sweet triumphs like Baba au Rhum, a French version of upside-down cake infused with rum syrup, raisins, delicate hints of citrus and vanilla bean and topped with whipped cream. “My favorite appetizer is our version of the Tomato Caprese which is completely renewed. We peel a tomato and stuff it with Burrata cheese and Pesto. We cover it with a little Datil Pepper Gelee to give it a little kick. It’s not too spicy, but gives it a little sweet and sour taste.” -Chef Poinard Handcrafted cocktails and a global selection of wines and Champagne are offered to complement each and every bite from the phenomenal menu. Tony Kostali,
Sommelier and Vice President of Boulevard operations, works closely with Urbain 40 general manager Thiago Parmagnani to source Old World and New World wines from France, Italy, Spain and California. This includes an incredible selection of 40 wines offered by the glass, which is designed to pair perfectly with the cuisine. Beverage manager Eric Youngblood crafts specialty cocktails, including seasonal offerings, with a 1940s focus and fresh juices, herbs, fruits and spices in the mix. The cocktail menu features a Blood Orange Martini, a Cucumber Mint Gimlet, a Chocolate Cream Martini and more. The refreshing beverages are a perfect ending to an evening of excellent food, live music and unabashed fun at Urbain 40. “We don’t want to be one of those anniversary restaurants where people go once a year to celebrate something. We want to be the happy place to go whenever you want to have fun and enjoy yourself.” -Chef Poinard From the moment you walk in, Urbain 40 invites guests to sit back and unwind in the comfort of stylishly upholstered chairs at one of the burnished-wood, white-linen-draped tables or banquettes. Guests are encouraged to enjoy sampling chef favorites in the lounge, hearty meals in the private gathering spaces, live entertainment in the main dining area and the finest wines shelved in wine lockers throughout the building. The menu items may change with the seasons, but the one thing that doesn’t change is quality. santé ! A CELEBRATION OF CHAMPAGNE Pop some bubbly and celebrate Valentine’s Day the right way this year!
By Riesa Pascal To say Olivier Zambaux knows a thing or two about Champagne, just might be the understatement of the year. Zambaux has been with the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort for more than 11 exciting years and for the last four years he’s been living out his passion as the Assistant Director of Banquets.
“What I like about the job is it’s always changing. One day it could be an event for two people and then the following month we’ll have an event with 13,000 people. It’s always changing and it’s challenging for everyone here at the hotel, especially for banquets, and I like that.” -Olivier Zambaux Zambaux has also been instructing the always popular Champagne Seminar at the annual Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic ever since the first event was held in 2010. The fact that Zambaux has been a Wine Sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers for 8 years would be reason enough for him to have the authority to speak about the beverage, but that isn’t his only impressive credential within the world of Champagne. Zambaux is also a proud native of the city of Sainte-Menehould a small town located north east of France. The city of Sainte-Menehould is located in the department of Marne of the French region Champagne-Ardenne. The area is significant because it is also the birthplace of Dom Pérignon, born in 1638, who is credited as making significant contributions to the production and quality of Champagne. “Champagne is a passion! The drink itself is beautiful and being born in the 28 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

same town as Dom Pérignon is pretty special.” -Olivier Zambaux The top sparkling wine producing countries are France, The United States, Spain, Italy, Germany and South Africa, but few know that only sparkling wine from France can be called Champagne. The Champagne region has over 74,000 acres under vine, 261 Champagne houses (wineries that purchase some or all of the grapes) and over 19,000 growers. The region is split into five areas and each uses a different percentage of the three grape varietals which means the Champagne from each of these areas will taste very different from one another. The Pinot Noir varietal imparts structure and power to the blend as well as aromas of red fruits. The Pinot Meunier varietal is supple and fruity. Its bouquet is intense, developing quickly over time and giving a certain roundness to a wine. The third varietal is Chardonnay, the bringer of finesse. This variety provides a wine with floral and sometimes mineral aromas. Its slow development makes it ideal for aging. “When we think about Champagne, we think about celebration. I do believe that life itself is a celebration so why not enjoy Champagne every day?” -Olivier Zambaux When it came to Champagne, I used to be like most of the population who think that it should only be brought out for specific celebrations. Wedding Toast? Pop the Champagne! New Years Eve? Put that bubbly on ice! Fortunately, a fascinating conversation with Zambaux opened my eyes to the fact that you don’t need to be wearing a tuxedo or a fancy dress in order to enjoy a nice glass of Champagne. Many people don’t realize that Champagne is actually far more versatile with food than any other wine as it can be paired with a wide variety of different cuisines. Another common misconception is that Champagne should only be drunk at the beginning of a meal, but the beverage can actually be enjoyed throughout the entire dinner by starting with a light body Champagne and then gradually moving towards a fuller body.
it or not, the butter we pour over our popcorn is actually a perfect pairing. The next time you’re enjoying popcorn and a movie at home, consider having a small glass of refreshing Champagne with you! I have yet to try it, but this pairing is easily my favorite suggestion as you don’t need a reason or a fancy date to kick back and pop in a DVD. A Valentine’s Day consisting of greasy pizza and Netflix is just as deserving of Champagne as a fancy Valentine’s Day dinner at one of Orlando’s many fine restaurants. If you feel a fancy dinner is calling your name however, consider feeding that desire with a Valentine’s Day celebration at the Swan and Dolphin Hotel. “All the restaurants at the Swan and Dolphin will be celebrating Valentine’s Day! We have an extensive Champagne list and I believe it will accommodate a lot of different palates so people will be able to enjoy some nice Champagne pairings without breaking the bank.” -Olivier Zambaux With over 70 sommeliers on property, there are plenty of experts, just like Zambaux, who are ready to answer all of your questions and make sure you enjoy only the best and most authentic Champagne. For those of you who are celebrating at home this year, here’s what you should look out for when purchasing your own bottle of bubbly. First, the bubbles should be small and should appear as fine, steady streams and be long lasting. Second, the nose should have somewhat of a fruity character, but should also show some of the yeasty, toasty character. Lastly, the palate experience should be dramatic. The once fine, lazy stream of bubbles should explode on the palate and produce a creamy mousse, which coats the palate and last long in the finish. You are now ready to enjoy a nice, chilled glass of Champagne on Valentine’s Day and beyond. santé! Olivier Zambaux
HERE COMES THE FUN First of all, and quite logically, French people do not say “cheers” when toasting. Instead you can use “santé” (health). So that was the easy part. Now you need to be extremely cautious, the following rules are of utmost importance. 1. Look at the person you are toasting with in the eyes. While this is not as essential as the next rule, it is considered the polite way to toast. 2. Do not add ice to your glass of wine. 3. Make sure that everyone toasted before you drink. 4. NEVER cross your glass with someone else… 5. Do not put down your glass between the toast and the first sip. Wait, what if I do cross my glass with someone else? Then you are going to suffer from seven years of bad sex or seven years of bad luck, whichever version you prefer. Note that this is also true in Germany. ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE KINGDOM OF FRANCE These traditions may seem crazy to modern readers, however they did make sense at the time. It’s said that people used to exchange a part of the liquid contained in their glass with the person they were toasting with. That way they could both be sure that none of the glass was poisoned. This is the reason why looking in the eyes was extremely important. This way people could detect stress, but most of all were not able to see if the content of the two glasses really mixed. Later, as the world became less violent, exchanging the content of both glasses became a rare practice while it became normal to simply clink glasses. The fear of poison also explains why not drinking after toasting was considered suspicious.
According to Zambaux, Champagne can even be paired with popcorn! The bizarre pairing was first suggested by his Food and Beverage Director, but Zambaux says he has to agree now that he’s tried it for himself. The acid in the Champagne cuts through oily food and helps to clean that oiliness out of your mouth, so believe
Nowadays, these problems don’t exist any more, but the tradition remained.

THE RITZ LIFE “BEYOND THIS THRESHOLD, I LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND” By Alexandra Niblett Living in Orlando
for nearly two years now, I have metamorphosed from a foreigner to a local, experiencing many of the must-do’s and world-renowned attractions and enjoying the one-ofa-kind sites and diverse cuisines — I know this city like the back of my hand. However, what I had yet to discover until recently was another gem right in my backyard — Grande Lakes Orlando. Grande Lakes Orlando is a gorgeous, 500acre property that is home to two well-known resorts: The JW Marriott, Orlando, and The Ritz-Carlton, Orlando. World-class leaders in the hospitality industry, these resorts are both brimming with high-class and luxurious accommodations, as well as ample opportunities of fun and pleasure for both the young and old. IT’S IN THE DETAILS… Accented with touches of Florida-native furnishings throughout the property, Grande Lakes Orlando introduces locals and travelers to another side of Orlando — that’s what makes this place special. Here, I discovered, is somewhere people can escape the pungent, tourism-thirsty billboards lining every major road and the never-ending hustle & bustle of cars that keep Orlando’s night sky illuminated overnight. Whether you’re feeling adventurous enough to be on the lookout for a Florida alligator on a guided eco-tour, or you just want to sit on your balcony with a glass of Champagne and watch Walt Disney World’s nightly fireworks, you can do it all, right on property. FOR THE ADVENTUROUS… Grande Lakes Orlando has three exclusive adventure experiences including fishing excursions, eco-tours and birdwatching, and they’re all as relaxing as they are fun. Certified Florida Master Naturalists lead guided eco-tours among the land, as well as the protected natural habitats behind property. The spa has an excess amount of calming spa treatments ranging from rejuvenating skin therapy enhancements, hair and nail treatments, massages, and their exclusive Grande Escapes. I had decided to experience the Grande Citrus Escape, which included an orange exfoliant that smelled and felt wonderful on my skin, a hydrating mask, a scalp massage and a stone massage. Every minute that passed made me wish time could stop so it could only last longer. Never have I felt more pampered or relaxed — these treatments are truly an escape.
of Florida’s backyard — literally. Located on property, Whisper Creek Farm is a 7,000-square-foot fruit and vegetable garden adjoined to an 11,000-square-foot outdoor event space, barn, apiary and chicken coop. Products produced on the farm are prepped and used across property in restaurant dishes, beverages and spa treatments. And take my word for it — the food is delectable. Because the various dining locations receive a lot of their food supplies from the farm, some menu items change based upon the season, leaving guests with satisfied bellies and giving them an incentive to come back.
The birdwatching experience is unique as well, giving guests a chance to learn about and observe dozens of Central Florida’s native avian species across some 300 acres of land. Not only will guests likely spot uncommon and endangered birds, they will have the opportunity to paint their very own bird houses that will be installed at Shingle Creek! It’s a neat, group-oriented activity that is both memorable and practical. And whether you’re interested in catching your first fish or your fiftieth, guests can fish from the shore or on Hyde Drift boats on Grande Lakes Orlando 40-acre Shingle Pond. There is something for everyone. Continuing on the property, it’s hard to miss the expansive 18-hole golf range. Built to serve golfers of all skill sets, several holes are routed through the preserved wetlands and natural woodlands, with the finishing holes concluding alongside both hotel buildings. It’s not just business partners who play on this green range. The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club is the first golf club in Orlando to offer foot golf, a fun activity that’s great for families and large groups of friends. So golfenthusiasts, if you’ve got a few hours to spare, enjoy the range! For those not so golf-savvy, well… it sure gives you one heck of a view. Aside from spa treatments, an impressive, newly renovated fitness center is located on the first floor of the spa. Though Grande Lakes Orlando opened July 1, 2003, the resort has freshened and updated much on property including the fitness center’s new, state-ofthe-art gym equipment this November. The gym houses brand new equipment called Technogym, featuring digital platforms on each machine that do more than monitor calories burned and navigate pace; it acts as a personalized tablet, allowing you to access social networks, virtually jog in other cities, practice languages with Rosetta Stone, and more. The center has 6,000 sq. ft. of workout space, and if you need a push, sign up for a workout program and join a group! AND THEN TAKE ANOTHER BITE… But if you’re like me and you’d rather indulge in delicious foods on your vacation than burn it off, I advise you try one of property’s ten full service dining options, in addition to the Fairways Pub at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club. Grande Lakes Orlando savory choices are not only eclectic, they offer you a taste 31 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
And one great thing is, you don’t have to be a resort guest to enjoy these restaurants. If you’re just stopping by for a meal, Grande Lakes Orlando will reimburse your parking fee. For the next date night, perhaps have dinner at Primo by Chef Melissa Kelly, an appetizing choice for the Italian cuisine lovers out there. Or grab lunch at Highball & Harvest, with their mouthwatering, Southern-inspired cuisine. The undeniable fact is, Grande Lakes Orlando is a beautiful property that has so much to offer. Above an entryway at The Ritz-Carlton Spa I recall reading the latin phrase, “in hoc limine relinque mundum.” It means, “beyond this threshold, I leave the world behind.” When my weekend stay was over, I left Grande Lakes Orlando with the impression that that’s exactly what I did. The eloquence from the spa’s motto not only carries into their spa treatments, it is carried through the staff’s kind mannerism and the property’s grand scheme. Grande Lakes Orlando is a destination within a destination, and well-worth a visit. www.grandelakes.com

What is “paradise?” We often define the term by an idea of a utopian destination. For most, the idea of paradise looks like an exotic island in the middle of the ocean. We picture an infinite shoreline of powdery white sand and the ocean waves gently breaking on the land. The picture of a cloudless, crystal blue sky that enhances the colors of the ocean and the green palm trees that sway from the warm ocean breeze, creating a soothing sound as it harmonizes with the waves breaking on shore. Paradise. For me, paradise was found and it wasn’t just a place - but a feeling. In the physical sense, I first landed in paradise on a sunny Wednesday afternoon at Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, located just northeast of Basseterre on the island of St. Kitts, and thus making it the very beginning of my adventure on the two-island country of St. Kitts and Nevis. St. Kitts and Nevis were among the first islands in the Caribbean to be settled by Europeans. The island is approximately 104 sq mi and has a population of about 55,000. Little did I know landing that these tiny islands in the Caribbean would capture so much of my soul, hence - feeling like paradise. Walking off the plane, I wasn’t expecting to be greeted by a friendly YU Lounge Concierge. In fact, I didn’t even know what the YU Lounge was, but with the VIP Package provided by the St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino, I was about to find out. YU Lounge is a private airport terminal, with a luxurious lounge, concierge and FBO services, designed for business jet and airline passengers. Upon arrival, YU Lounge guests are picked up in a luxury vehicle, transported to the YU Lounge, and that’s it! The concierge does everything else for you, from picking up your checked in luggage to customs, all while you sit back, relax, catch up on emails using their complimentary Wi-Fi, sip on bubbly champagne and refuel on tasty hors d’oeuvres. After departure from the YU Lounge to the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, I wasn’t expecting to soon be entering into a luxury, spacious and welcoming hotel lobby where I’d soon be guided to my suite that was too good to be true. From the moment I walked into this extraordinary West Indian themed suite, I felt as if I was walking into a luxurious one-bedroom apartment with a balcony that overlooks the resort pool, which leads out to the infinite Caribbean Sea. Paradise? Yes, I think I found paradise right there sitting on the balcony, inhaling the fresh ocean air, gazing out to the horizon and leaving all the stress and worries of reality far away. As much as enjoying the comforts of the room was just what I needed, there was a lot of resort and island to see – so off I went to explore this extraordinary property. The St. Kitts Marriott Resort is the largest luxury resort on St. Kitts, offering world-class amenities in a setting of relaxed, tropical elegance. Guests are welcome to enjoy a championship 18-hole golf course, 15,000 sq. ft. full-service luxury spa, eight restaurants and four bars, 35,000 sq. ft. Vegas-style casino, spacious fitness center, three tropical outdoor pools, tennis courts, high-speed Internet in guest rooms, WiFi in lobby and common areas, 18-hour room service, Gift shop, and car rental desk, just to name a few things. You can visit St. Kitts and Nevis without actually having to ever leave the resort property!

However, there’s also way too much to see off property that will give you a whole new perspective on the culture, uniqueness and beauty of St. Kitts and Nevis. When the term “paradise” becomes both a feeling and a destination, it’s most likely going to happen when you’re cruising across the Caribbean on a spacious Catamaran to St. Kitts’ sister island, Nevis. Glide across the sea with the sounds of the island music in the air, an icecold rum punch in your hand and the warm sensation on your skin from the Caribbean sun. Getting lost at sea never felt so good – especially when you stop to swim and snorkel in the sea mid-way through the trip! When the Catamaran arrives at Nevis, guests can enjoy an outdoor barbecue with traditional island sides and flavors prepared for you by locals. After lunch you’ll have a few hours to spare to explore Nevis, and where else would you choose to go then the famous Sunshine Bar to attempt to conquer a few Killer Bees? You might fall asleep on the Catamaran ride back to St. Kitts! If you want to step back in time and explore some of St. Kitts history, pay a visit to Brimstone Hill Fortress, which offers a journey back in time. Located 800 feet above sea level, this cultural landmark is one of the best-preserved historical fortifications in the Americas, featuring extraordinary panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and neighboring islands of Nevis, St. Eustatius, Saba, St. Maarten and St. Barts that will leave you in awe. Take a moment in time to gaze out to the sea and appreciate the natural beauty of the earth. Why not add a little adrenaline into your St. Kitts adventure with a Zip-Line Adventure
through the rainforest? Zip through the picturesque Kittitian rainforest and enjoy an amazing bird’s eye view of the island’s diverse terrain and wildlife. A unique and secure cable system offers a safe and exhilarating adventure above the treetops. Some days, all I care to do on vacation is relax on the beach and, of course, get a luxurious spa treatment. At the Spa located in the St. Kitts Marriott, I chose their signature treatment, the Bamboo Massage. This unique specialty treatment utilizes a deep tissue technique enhanced with warm bamboo stalks of various lengths and diameters to revive poor circulation and promote wellbeing. I’ve had a hot stone massage before, but the bamboo knocks the hot stones out of the water! I left feeling relaxed and completely rejuvenated. After my treatment, I enjoyed a few minutes in their refreshing Jacuzzi, which was the perfect touch to the end of a world-class spa treatment. There’s only so much that words can do to bring a destination, such as St. Kitts and Nevis, to life. The only thing left to do is book a ticket and a St. Kitts Marriott VIP package, and get yourself over there as soon as possible! So when you’re looking for paradise, remember that it’s not always a place, but the way a place makes you feel. I can’t wait to get back to the dreamy days gliding along the Caribbean Sea without a care in the world, just a short and easy plane ride away to St. Kitts and Nevis. For more information about St. Kitts and Nevis and the St. Kitts Marriott Resort, visit their website, www.Marriott.com.

MENSWEAR
In last year’s February issue, Orlando Style was on the cutting edge of fashion in our article “From the Gym to the Office.” The article presented the trend of pairing gym essentials like clean and stylish sneakers with office attire for a comfortable and casual alternative to the classic business suit. If you work in a flexible and casual environment, you’ll still be leading the fashion scene with this look. 2016’s menswear is centered around the collision of the office and the gym, with celebs and models everywhere opting for a sophisticated pair of Reeboks, Nikes or Adidas over a typical dress shoe. Just remember to keep the worn and well-used tennies in the gym bag where they belong. Pictured Top Left: Bally Spring 2016 Lookbook
MUTED & MONOCHROMATIC
Save the bold colors for another time and stick with tints, tones and shades of a single hue if you want to stay in style this spring. Opt for white on white with a monochromatic staple piece for a fresh and on-trend look. Pictured Top Right: Brunello Cucinelli Spring 2016 Lookbook

ASYMMETRIC SIMPLICITY
I’ll admit that some of the trends to fly off the runway and into stores are a little too couture to wear everyday. Calvin Klein, however, along with a few other brands, have released readyto-wear lines that are actually wearable. Full of military greens and staple pieces, these clothing lines are centered around two things: asymmetry and simplicity. Tees and shirts with asymmetric hems that pair perfectly with slacks and pants of the same color family will make being put together and looking good easier this year than in years past. If a seat on the fashion bandwagon as “the guy who looks good all the time” is relevant to you, this is an easy trend to follow this season. Pictured Right: Calvin Klein 2016 Lookbook Before you dress in the morning, remember to stay true to you and wear everything with confidence - that’s the one accessory that will always make or break an outfit.

Rolls-Royce
DAW N
Compromise is not a word recognised in the Rolls-Royce lexicon. Indeed the company continues
to live by the clarion cry of co-founder Sir Henry Royce to “Strive for perfection in everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it. Accept nothing nearly right or good enough.” The first part of this maxim – “Strive for perfection in everything you do” – guides the company’s every action particularly during the creation of a new motor car. The second – “Take the best that exists and make it better” – has been clearly evidenced in the success of both Phantom Series II and Ghost Series II as they were carefully updated in 2012 and 2014 respectively. And when Rolls-Royce judged that it was time for an authentic gentleman’s Gran Turismo to return to the world stage, it was guided by the third part of Sir Henry’s maxim: “When it does not exist, design it.” And thus, Wraith was born.

Now, the final part of this maxim has guided the Rolls-Royce design and engineering teams as they have worked to initiate a new age for open-top, superluxury motoring. In a sector exclusively populated by the biggest of automotive compromises – the 2+2 seat configuration – Rolls-Royce has chosen to “accept nothing nearly right or good enough.” And so, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn, the world’s only true modern four-seater super-luxury drophead, is born. “Dawn is a Rolls-Royce that feels completely at home on the Route Napoleon. It is a contemporary homage to a life on the Côte d’Azur. The car is a contemporary take on the ‘Casino’ lifestyle. Perhaps seen as cavalier in character it is intended to attract people who relish both freedom and sophistication,” comments Giles Taylor, Director of Design. “At Rolls-Royce Motor Cars we design without compromise, and this uncompromising approach brings new challenges with each new motor car,” continues Taylor. “In the case of the new Rolls-Royce Dawn, we have designed it from the road up to deliver a striking, seductive encounter.” The new Rolls-Royce Dawn greets the observer with a striking yet elegant exterior design with classic Rolls-Royce appearance and presence. It is the most vibrant Rolls-Royce yet with charming and alluring qualities that bring a new level of finesse, sophistication and refinement in a drophead coupé – a serene yet exhilarating sense of uncompromised freedom. It offers a new level of effortlessness and a relaxed sensory experience with an underlying exhilaration and dynamism. All this without a single compromise to comfort and space. This new Rolls-Royce embodies dynamic and social qualities that will attract a broader, younger and more socially-aware audience around the world. Contrary to media speculation, the new Rolls-Royce Dawn is not a Wraith drophead. 80% of the exterior body panels of the new Dawn are newly designed to accommodate an evolution of Rolls-Royce’s design language and to encapsulate highly contemporary, fourseat super-luxury drophead architecture.
Dawn is a Rolls-Royce that feels completely at home on the Route Napoleon.
The aim was clear. To do what no other car manufacturer had achieved so far – make a car that looks as beautiful with its roof up as with it down. One could almost say that the result of the design team’s restless endeavours has been to make the new Rolls-Royce Dawn two cars in one.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT
THE SKY HAS GAINED A Remembering David Bowie
Star By Courtney Caggiano

DON’T MISS THE BEAT
“In a blanket of darkness, a star is born when atoms of light come together under enough pressure to fuse into a beautiful creation that stands the test of time.”
Throughout his monumental career, David Bowie had celebrated the many facets of life by becoming a variety of characters, representing the entire spectrum of the human experience in one beautiful soul. As an artistic voice in a cultural wilderness, Bowie lived his life striving to memorialize the rainbow of mankind, and in our efforts to keep his career of characters alive, we often forget to see him as David, the boy behind Bowie. In remembrance of the legacy of the legend, we stand in awe not just at the artistry of David Bowie, but at the man himself. With such a sudden loss of an artist who shaped the sound and aesthetic of musical culture around the globe, we are faced with the challenge of finding the proper means with which to pay our respects to such a man of genius. From a critical perspective, one could begin by listing the singer’s awards and accolades, of which he has won many. However, Bowie fashioned his timeline on earth to reflect the value of everything on the other side of accomplishment: the beauty of the unknown and the unspoken-for. Time and again, Bowie found the loveliness of anything that entered his mind, and this loveliness was often a projection of Bowie’s spirit upon that which his mind beheld. Many of us are familiar with his experimental sound, androgynous persona, and idealistic fantasies that proved the artist longed to view the world with a new set of eyes, but Ziggy Stardust can’t take all the credit for Bowie’s soulful desire to exaggerate the beauty of the misunderstood. Now that we are left with nothing more than the history of a history maker, it seems fitting to honor the artist, rather than the characters of his creation. David Bowie was born David Robert Jones, the man who could find greatness in the everyday as easily as he could in outer space. Jones, who once stated of the Oxford English Dictionary, “When I first read it, I thought it was a really, really long poem about everything,” saw both the practicality and possibility of cultural aspects many would not even give a second look. Perhaps that is what separated Jones into his own class of being; he understood the necessity of cultural and intellectual progression as well as how to make the unnecessary a vital part of that progression.
the top of the glam-rock scene in the early 1970s. After major success with his innovative single, “Space Oddity,” one of the artist’s most remembered seasons was captured in the album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The short-lived persona of Ziggy Stardust was so iconic that many Bowie fans view Stardust as the essence of who the artist was. However, a closer look at the fictional Stardust reveals the truth behind who Jones himself was—and is. Throughout his span of beloved and bewildering characters, we see the fingerprint of a man motivated by revelation and reinvention, ideas that cannot be executed by the faint of heart or the narrow of mind. Jones was undeniably a genius, led by the intent to expose the limitations of culture and simultaneously prove that no such limit could exist. What truly made Jones stand out even as he was standing in as Bowie was his spirit of international sensitivity that was marked by a sense of elegance and generosity rare in most of the rock stars of the time. Rather than seeking fame, whether musical or artistic, Bowie saw himself as a builder of bridges between the most distant worlds, and this was widely seen in his variety of recording ventures, including his latest release, Blackstar. This 25th and final studio album is essentially a testimony of a creative soul searching for renewed life after one-too-many endings that all but ended him. As can be heard in his single, “Lazarus,” Jones expresses the sentiments of one who knows there is still life to be lived, even when the world is against him. Once again, we find Jones seeking to make the lost feel loved and the unknown understood. He may have viewed himself as a voice to the voiceless, but Jonesturned-Bowie was truly a star—and one of his own making. Today we remember that star, which still shines brightly across the sky of a sunset of progress in the music world. In a blanket of darkness, a star is born when atoms of light come together under enough pressure to fuse into a beautiful creation that stands the test of time. The career of David Bowie has birthed a star, and our sky will never be the same.
Born in Brixton, England in 1947, Jones was given an endless vision that spanned a career of nearly six decades, including his climb to

CELEBRITY VALENTINE’S DAY GIFTS What do you buy the one who already has everything? By Riesa Pascal For these celebs, every kiss does begin with “K” because spending over 15K is a perfectly reasonable price for the perfect Valentine’s day gift. A recent study on Valentine’s Day spending trends shows that men shell out an average of $190, while women spend an average of $97 on gifts and that number is rising each year. With the total spending approaching a staggering $19 billion, it’s no surprise that wealthy celebrities are the ones leading the exchanging of expensive presents. Here is our handpicked list of the most expensive celebrity Valentine’s Day gifts. ANGELINA JOLIE, $18,000+ Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have celebrated ten Valentine’s Days together, but Jolie will forever have a hard time topping the sweet and creative gift she gave Pitt in 2010. The Maleficent star presented Pitt with a 200-year-old olive tree to plant at their French chateau. Research shows that the market for ancient olive trees is rapidly growing. One source estimates the value of Pitt’s tree to be between $18,000 and $30,000. The couple’s French chateau already has its own olive grove, plus a vineyard and a moat. Albeit very pricey and slightly bizarre, Pitt is most likely use to Jolie’s extravagant gifts. She has also bought Pitt a $12.2 million heart-shaped island for his 50th birthday, a $1.6 million helicopter and flying lessons. What a catch, Brad! JAY-Z, $24,000 Of course a list about lavish spending wouldn’t be complete without the couple that inspired the title for this article: Jay-Z and Beyonce. The “Crazy In Love” duo are known for gifting lavish presents to each other and you better believe that includes Valentine’s Day! In 2009, Jay-Z celebrated the romantic day by purchasing his wife a platinum-covered mobile phone reportedly worth $24,000. The couple is so famous for their passionate relationship that an Italian restaurant in Brooklyn even offered a Beyonce-themed Valentine’s Day dinner last year. Among Brucie’s menu of over a dozen cleverly titled dishes were the Blue Ivy, the I Am Pasta Fierce, the Brestiny’s Child and the Jay-Ziti. Last year, Beyonce also released her own branded underwear line just in time for Valentine’s Day (how convenient!) with “Yours” and “Mine” printed on them.
GEORGE CLOONEY, $40,000+ If you’ve been repeatedly called the most handsome man in the world, you probably don’t need to be much of a romantic to get women to fall for you. Fortunately for all the ladies of the world, George Clooney is both attractive and romantic. That is, if you consider dropping five figures on a date to be romantic. In 2008, Clooney went all out on his then-girlfriend, Sarah Larson’s, Valentine’s Day gift. The Gravity star took his sweetheart to Las Vegas for a romantic Valentine’s getaway. The 56 STYLETOME.COM
couple stayed in a $40,000 hotel room at the Hugh Hefner Sky Villa in the Palms Casino Resort and also went to The Beatles LOVE show by Cirque Du Soleil at the Mirage. Of course no date is complete without a fancy dinner so Clooney also treated Larson to a lovely dining experience at Nove Italiano Restaurant. Their romance only lasted 11 months, but Clooney made certain that Larson’s future partners would have a hard act to follow on Valentine’s Day.

COURTENEY COX, $45,000 David Arquette and Courteney Cox were married for 11 years before they split in 2010. Who’s to say when their marriage troubles started, but one could wonder if Cox tried to save it with her last Valentine’s Day gift exchange. For their final Valentine’s Day together, Cox purchased an antique carousel horse for her husband. The item is likely to have been handmade with solid wood and brass poles and was reportedly valued at as much as $45,000. No word on the effect of the gift on Arquette, but the couple did finalize their divorce in May 2013. We may never know the true reason for the split, but it’s probably safe to say that Cox’s generous gift-giving had nothing to do with it.

KATY PERRY, $340,000+ The lightning
fast marriage between Katy Perry and Russell Brand may have only lasted 14 months, but the couple managed to celebrate a happy (and expensive) Valentine’s Day while they were still together. Perry must have been head over heels after her 2010 engagement when she decided to drop at least $340,000 on a lilac-colored Bentley Brooklands car for her then- fiancé. No word on how the “Dark Horse” singer feels about having to kiss all that money goodbye with the signing of the divorce papers. Maybe this year Perry will stick with some exotic Valentine’s Day chocolates instead.
DAVID BECKHAM, $8 MILLION+ Britain’s favorite couple, David and Victoria Beckham, are one of the few on our list that are still together. If this means we should take notes on how the successful couple celebrates Valentine’s Day, then I hope you have at least several million dollars handy because that’s how much David dropped on his wife in 2006. The soccer star decided to express his love for the Spice Girls singer by buying her an $8 million diamond Bulgari necklace for Valentine’s Day. I don’t remember Posh Spice singing about expensive gifts in “Wannabe,” but that song did come out 20 years ago… and now it’s stuck in my head. Excuse me while I go find my old Spice Girls album.

“POOR DECISIONS AND REGRET AT THE BOTTOM OF A PINT OF BEN & JERRY’S” Maybe the first resolution
you made was to lose those pesky few pounds you’ve been pouting about every time you look in the mirror; or was it as seemingly simple as eating right and joining a gym? Most resolutions have something to do with health and weight loss, and while we have every intention of staying strong and following through, let’s face it... most of us have abandoned ship by day 32. Don’t let a small hiccup disrupt your entire year. Instead, begin small. These five habits that are simple to implement in any routine are sure to keep you on track for 2016.
4
dark chocolate or products containing raw sugar to avoid over-indulgence down the road. SEE A DIETICIAN: If you’re trying to lose weight, chances are, you’ve tried before and it hasn’t worked out. Seek help. This is a lifestyle change not a diet, and big changes take time and require accountability. Everybody’s body is different and a dietician will help determine the type of metabolism you have and what may be the best way for you to reach that healthy state you’ve been working so hard for.
1 5 2 3 6 WATER: Up to 60% of your body is water. Your heart and brain are 73% water and your body uses water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to regulate temperature and simply maintain other functions you take for granted. Don’t neglect your body this year. Drinking water clears your complexion, flushes toxins and aids in brain function, clearing your head and alleviating stress. As a plus, drinking a large glass of water before every meal places your body in a position to enjoy your food comfortably without overeating. If you’re looking for ways to consume more water, check out my article from September titled “The H2O Hack.” SNACKING: You’re always hearing doctors and nutritionists talking about the importance of snacking. Have you ever stopped to listen, though? Snacking is vital to weight loss and weight maintenance because of the way your body functions. When your blood sugar falls below a normal state, your liver is forced to produce sugar by turning glycogen into glucose. Weight gain is a byproduct of this process as your body begins to store excess fat from food in preparation for the next time it has to make its own sugar. Snacking every two to three hours helps to regulate your body’s natural sugar, in turn keeping your liver from over producing glucose.
INDULGE: There’s a difference between indulging and binging, don’t get confused. Cutting out any food cold turkey is never a good idea. While it may seem responsible to give up your secret vice of chocolate or that “bad for you” food, this only leads to poor decisions and regret at the bottom of a pint of Ben & Jerry’s later on. Curb your appetite with natural alternatives like a small piece of
GET ENOUGH SLEEP: Our society seems to be the society that never sleeps. Put the chips and device down after 9PM to allow your body time to feel tired naturally. When you don’t allow your body to sleep, you lose less weight and disrupt your body’s natural schedule. A study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine proved the impact sleep has on weight loss when the study put two groups of dieters on different sleep schedules. The study found that the group that slept seven to eight hours each night lost significantly more weight than the group that slept less, even though their diets were identical. The University of Chicago also found that inadequate sleep actually changes your fat cells. After only four days of sleep deprivation, your body’s ability to correctly utilize insulin becomes completely disrupted and insulin sensitivity in your body drops by 30%.
Because weight fluctuates from day to day, checking your progress daily only leads to discouragement and a sense of failure when you see your weight rise half the time. Studies also show that on average, Wednesday is the day weight fluctuates the least, so weigh yourself first thing every Wednesday morning to get the most accurate reading of your progress. Fun Fact: A new study determined how much weight the average person needs to lose before people around him or her begin to notice. If you’re of average height, (5’4” if you’re a woman and 5’10” if you’re male) you need to lose eight pounds, Babe, or nine pounds if you’re a bro before people starting asking that glorious and slightly awkward question, “have you lost weight?” The study also determined that you’ll need to lose 14 pounds if you’re a lady and 18 pounds for you gents before people begin to find you more attractive. So don’t fret if you’re feeling discouraged because no one’s noticed yet. Eight pounds is a milestone well worth the work. And remember to talk with your doctor before starting any new diet change or exercise regime.
It’s worse than it sounds: A healthy body’s fat cells remove fatty acids and lipids from the bloodstream to prevent fat storage. In an unhealthy, sleep deprived, insulin resistant body however, lipids roam free, circulating in your blood to create more insulin. The Excess insulin doesn’t know what to do in the body so it stores extra fat in all the wrong places, like your liver. If losing weight really is your top priority this year, logout of twitter and log some hours on that sleep number. STAY OFF THE SCALE: If you’re like me when you start a new diet, the first thing you want to do every morning is check your progress. This is the complete opposite of what you should do. Step away from the scale. I repeat, STEP AWAY FROM THE SCALE.

ARE YOU COOKING YOUR BRAIN
WIFI SYNDROME & OTHER TECH INDUCED DISORDERS By Alexandra Niblett
Wifi Syndrome is characterized by a variety of nonspecific symptoms, which afflicted individuals attribute to exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF), according to the World Health Organization. Though EHS is idiopathic, more and more Wifi Syndrome reported cases are surfacing, making people question the consequences of being on their phones and other technology gadgets for extended periods of time.
Technology has changed the world.
Thanks to it, we can now be connected almost anywhere, at almost any given time. And while it has brought many people together, it has also strained relationships and friendships due to an ever-growing dependence on our gadgets and less interactions with those right in front of us. Like everything in life, it has its pros and cons. But you may not know about a particular developing con regarding the tech world. It’s called Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity Syndrome, (EHS), or more commonly known as Wifi Syndrome. 62

WITH YOUR PHONE? Every time you are on your phone, surfing the web on a computer at home, or watching Netflix on your tablet, you are exposed to electromagnetic fields. People have allegedly begun having “allergic reactions” to EMF, reporting symptoms such as nausea, tiredness, concentration difficulties, burning sensations and more. While there has yet to be a determined cause to this alleged condition, the World Health Organization does acknowledge it. Researchers around the world have begun looking into this theory of EMF causing detrimental symptoms for people, but have had little luck so far discovering strong enough correlations to declare it. And though multiple people have similar symptoms, their symptoms have one BIG thing in common ― they’re nearly undiagnosable due to the plethora of health factors possibly responsible for the symptoms. One could be experiencing tiredness due to lack of sleep rather than too much EMF exposure. Another person could experience nausea due to their diet.

This is not to say EHS isn’t real, but concrete evidence is hard to muster when scientists are unable to determine clear correlations. In addition to symptoms possibly being caused by health factors unrelated to EMF, there is also what is known as a “nocebo effect,” which is when people tend to feel sick because they believe they’ve been exposed to something that will sicken them. This is another potential conclusion to people’s Wifi Syndrome symptoms. Regardless of whether you believe Wifi Syndrome is a real disorder or a myth, if you are experiencing any unusual symptoms, it’s always best to just go to a doctor and get checked out. Wifi and our everyday technological habits are still significantly modern, hindering our chances of knowing all of the potential health hazards EMF’s can cause. What has been declared is Computer Vision Syndrome, which is eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged computer, tablet, e-reader and cell phone use causing eye strain, headaches, dry eyes, blurred vision and more according to the American Optometric Association. AOA claims that because the visual demands of the task exceed the visual abilities of the individual to comfortably perform them, CVS occurs. Aside from vision issues, there is also speculation that demanding use of cell phones and computers can be linked to an increase in stress, sleep disorders and depressive symptoms, though few studies’ outcomes have been conclusive. Whatever the causes may be to these symptoms, you don’t need a researcher to tell you that you’ll enjoy life more if you just put your phone down, get off your computer, separate yourself from the tech world and enjoy real life rather than your virtual one. It’s good to utilize and enjoy the technological advancements we have today, but it’s healthy for us to stray away from overindulging in technology. If you haven’t experienced a technology-induced disorder yet, do yourself a favor and prevent yourself from being the next affected individual. See the world through your eyes, not all from a screen.
IT’S GOOD TO UTILIZE AND ENJOY THE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS WE HAVE TODAY, BUT IT’S HEALTHY FOR US TO STRAY AWAY FROM OVERINDULGING IN TECHNOLOGY. 63 STYLETOME.COM

HEALTH & BEAUTY
FAST FIXES FOR MORE ENERGY By Alex Savard
Do you catch yourself constantly hitting the snooze button or drifting off in the middle of the day? With a repetitive schedule and a busy workload, it might be hard to stay on track and keep focused throughout the day. Luckily, we have found 5 fast fixes for more energy that can help you stay feeling refreshed!
1. Go green! Those cute little decorative plants in offices are doing much more than you think. Studies show that houseplants can help filter out ozone, the main ingredient in air pollution which is full of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and energy-draining allergies. The ozone may be mainly outside, but office equipment as fax machines, By Juliasuch Sharp copiers, ultra violet lights and even electrostatic air purification systems can contribute to increased indoor ozone levels. These chemicals have both long and short-term effects and can influence your ability to perform throughout the day. Add a plant in your office and these potential threats will diminish!
2.
Hydration This might be common sense but we often find ourselves forgetting to drink enough water throughout the day. Water makes up most of our body and when we don’t drink enough of it, various bodily systems begin to slow down causing us to feel fatigued and sluggish. If you’re starting to feel tired and need a quick pick-me-up, try drinking a glass or two of water. 3. Jump, Jump Around! If you don’t have time to hit the gym during the day, get a quick boost from doing a set of 25 jumping jacks. Jumping jacks are a high-impact, high-energy exercise that
64 STYLETOME.COM
can increase your endurance for the rest of the day. With that being said, get up out of your chair and jump around!
4. I’m all ears When you’re drifting off in the middle of the day, give your ears a little lovin’. Our ears serve as our energy pathways and massaging them unites all of the meridians and gets the energy flowing. To boost your energy, pinch the rim of each ear between your thumb and pointer finger, and rub up and down for 10 to 30 seconds.
5. Lend a helping hand You’ve come to the point in your day where you’re unfocused and can’t seem to get anything done, so take a break and help someone out. This will allow you to get your blood flowing and have a moment of clarity to power through your workload before the day is out. Being kind and helping someone will also release endorphins, giving you that needed boost to finish out your day.
“Our ears serve as our energy pathways and massaging them unites all of the meridians and gets the energy flowing.”

CHRIS BROWN Focus on the Client. That is the approach that Chris has adopted in his business.
Each day Chris’s goal is to keep his clients best interest as his goal when working with a buyer or seller, helping them to achieve their real estate goals. Simple basic guiding rules and disciplines keep Chris’s eye on the goal of taking the time to listen to each client whether they be one if his high value clients or a client referral of a friend or child of a past client, looking to make their 1st home purchase. “I learned many years ago that if I help my client achieve their goals, I will achieve my goals in business and life”. Chris concentrates his practice to Seminole and Orange Counties. As the area has grown and changed since starting his career back in 1987, Chris has learned that you can’t be all things to all people and you need to have a fantastic working knowledge of your product in a rapidly changing market place. Chris considers himself not only a Realtor but more importantly a counselor, guiding his clients through every step of the transaction including helping with financing and of course the closing. Chris got his taste of housing while working for his parents who designed and built custom homes here in Central Florida so housing has been in his blood since a young age. He was exposed to all aspects of both design and construction, working on the job sites with the crews digging footers up to nailing shingles, and then later he was trained in structural design and later in direct sales with the custom home client. In 1987, Chris left the family business and went to work for Huskey Realty in Longwood which at that time was still developing the communities in Sweetwater and the surrounding area, RiverCrest in Sanford and many other high end communities. He was also exposed to general real estate and was mentored by some of the best agents in town on how to listen to a client’s needs and goals, to guide and direct them to the product that best works for them and to guide them away from making a real estate mistake by purchasing a home on emotion and not looking long term down the road. “I have talked many buyers out of a home because I knew that they were making a mistake and making a sale is not my focus, creating a long term client that trusts me is what I focus on”.

Everyone has a passion in their professional life. Nothing makes me happier than when I get a call from a client, many years in the past and they say that we called you because we trust you and we need your help. That help may be as simple as “my a/c is not working, my house is hot, who I call” or we are being transferred to a new City, we need to sell our home, come over and advise us on what we need to do. Just the other day, I received a call from a couple who don’t need to sell until January, 2017, they wanted to meet with me just to go over repairs and staging tips to be completed over the next 12 months. I spent 3 hours with them and in a year, when the time is right for them, we will list that home and I will be a part of getting them moved towards retirement. A few months ago, I had the pleasure of helping a young couple purchase their 1st home after renting for 8+ years. He is a Doctor with an extremely demanding schedule, the wife was 5 months pregnant and we needed to find a home that fit their lifestyle in a gated and safe community, get the home purchased and closed with 60 days to spare for remodeling time before the child was born, this was a good challenge. A few months later, I helped them met their goals and gained great friends in the process and helped to take the stress out of this busy families life. Helping a family solve their real estate issue brings me the greatest joy, knowing that I didn’t “sell” them a home, I helped them solve an issue in a short period of time. That to me is a rush, knowing that I did a good job and most importantly, helped someone out. When asked what a typical client was, a pause came over the room as there is no typical client. I work with a lot of Executives and Doctors which allows me to work in the higher end communities however I also receive several referrals each year from these same folks as well as many of my past clients over the past 28 years. Chris may show in a gated community in the morning and later that day be working with a 1st time Townhome client. I love 1st time buyers and sellers. They expect a “salesman” that will agree with everything that they say, never 70 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

disagree and if they like a home, they expect that I will tell them that this is the home for them but they are surprised when I may not agree and point out the power lines behind the home or some other defect that I know will haunt them down the road. Chris likes to educate each buyer or seller and guide them to make the right decision, not to settle and in return, they will come back year after year which is a good business plan for any profession. Chris loves to pass on his knowledge and experience to his clients.
Knowledge and experience are important to any profession. With 8 National Designations (ABR, ALHS, CDPE, CRS, CSP, GRI, e-PRO, TRC) as well as a Brokers License, over 630 closings totaling over 110,000,000 in closed volume, Chris feels that he can offer his clients value. In his personal life, Chris is the husband to his wonderful and supportive wife Donna as well as several dogs. We help with a local dog rescue and provide end of life care for 71 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
Pomeranians so our home is like an assisted living facility for senior dogs! Each day I am lucky when the phone rings and someone has a problem that they need help solving. Sometimes it means helping them buy or sell a home, sometimes it is as simple as I need a good plumber, can you help me. I love real estate. I have the honor and pleasure of getting paid to help people reach their real estate goals!

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature
The Constitution of the United States guarantees the right to trial by jury. This right means that no citizen can be deprived of their liberty or property based upon the belief of a prosecutor or a judge alone. The right to trial by jury not only protects the accused but also makes each juror an integral part of the government. Many countries do not give an accused the right to trial by jury but rather let judges decide the fate of its citizens who have been charged with crimes. There are some who argue judges should decide all cases rather than letting citizens determine disputes between the government and the accused. While there is no definitive answer as to which system is better, there can be no doubt that the right to trial by jury allows citizens acting as jurors to play an important role in preserving liberty and justice in this country. Mark L. Horwitz
THE IMPORTANCE OF JURORS TO THE AMERICAN GOVERNMENT By Mark L. Horwitz | Criminal Defense Attorney Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine St.Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 • F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com • www.mlhorwitzlaw.com
When the Constitution was enacted, the right to trial by jury empowered the jury to not only decide the facts but also consider whether the law was correct and properly applied against the defendant. Today jurors are told that the law is for the judge to decide and the jurors must accept the law as given by the judge. There are some who contend that the jury should have the right to disagree with the law in a particular case or to disagree with the application of the law to a particular defendant.
In a criminal case courts instruct a jury that the matter of sentencing is up to the judge and is not to be considered by the jury, except in death penalty cases. In many cases, there are harsh long-term minimum mandatory sentences which the judge must impose. The jurors are not told of the sentence which the judge must impose. Many would contend that the Founding Fathers who wrote the Constitution would expect today’s jurors to be told of the minimum mandatory sentence in order to properly act as a check against excessive punishment. Even today many cases result in not guilty verdicts even though a careful analysis of the evidence would indicate that the government proved its case by establishing all necessary facts for conviction. When this happens it is referred to as “jury pardon” or “jury nullification”. Many historians believe that the drafters of the Constitution intended a “jury pardon” as a way for the jury to stand between the citizen and an unjust prosecution either because the law was unjust or because a law was improperly applied.

Last year Downtown Disney officially changed their name to Disney Springs, but the name isn’t the only thing that’s new at the popular entertainment complex. 2016 has brought with it an exciting time of change for fans of La Nouba by Cirque Du Soleil. The contemporary circus production first premiered on December 23, 1998 in a custom-designed theatre built right in the heart of Central Florida. Since then, the magnificent structure has stood ever tall and proud over the Disney Springs skyline. A beaconing symbol welcoming thousands of spectators into the extraordinary and magical world of Cirque Du Soleil.

Over the years, the ever evolving La Nouba has gone above and beyond to ensure a fresh, captivating experience for each and every guest. From updating old acts to introducing new acts, La Nouba has never failed to adapt its show and never has that been more evident than now with the addition of two brand new acts to their already impressive roster of talented performers. As creatures of habit, some past attendees of the show may say La Nouba was just fine the way it was and didn’t need updating…and they wouldn’t necessarily be wrong! La Nouba has had a longstanding reputation for being one of Orlando’s best family friendly shows for good reason. The evolution of this beloved show may not feel necessary, but rave reviews and sold out evenings

performing their act for the first time in the United States. Only Disney Springs guests will have the rare opportunity to view this dynamic duo as their act can only be seen on the La Nouba stage. The breathtaking performance requires extreme trust as for most of the act, Ekaterina is held only by Alexander – his arms, his feet and even his teeth – as he himself hangs by his feet or arms high above the stage.
The show now features a B-Boy trio in their own electrifying act, a first for any Cirque du Soleil show. B-boying or breaking, also called breakdancing, is a physically demanding style of street dance that originated in the mid-1970s. The La Nouba artistic staff scoured the globe for their three inaugural B-Boys: Josh Ortiz (“Incredible Josh”), Jean Carlos Lloret (“Bebo”) and Dmytro Li (“Flying Buddha”). The three hail respectively from the Bronx, N.Y., the Boston area and Ukraine and are now performing together for the first time on the La Nouba stage. All three have been dancing since their youth and bring their own unique styles to the act. Guests can watch in amazement as the B-Boys execute acrobatic tricks and moves, including flips and spins, to the fast paced, live music.
Men and women, young and old...there are few experiences in life that can genuinely be enjoyed by everyone and it’s clear that La Nouba takes great pride in boasting such an all-encompassing show. Language barriers, age gaps, different cultures and a host of other dividing traits are left outside the door once you step into the La Nouba tent and become fully immersed in the beautiful experience. A clown duo will lead the theatre in hearty laughs throughout the night without the need for words. A live band and powerful singers will bring chills over you as they perform the custom composed music. The fascinating acts will leave you filled with awe and appreciation. There have always been a hundred reasons to see La Nouba, but now there’s two more reasons to add to the list. The show’s new acts are unlike anything audiences have ever seen before. You have the opportunity to experience La Nouba in a whole new way this year. If you’ve never seen the show, what are you waiting for? If you’ve seen it before, it’s time to see it again! La Nouba welcomes more than 1,650 spectators ten times a week. Will you be one of them this new year?
In addition to the upbeat, high energy thrills of breakdancing, La Nouba has also added a tranquil, yet mesmerizing Aerial Bamboo performance to their phenomenal show. Originating in China, the delicate art form involves a pole-shaped apparatus suspended from the ceiling, with attached loops used for a variety of tricks and stunts. Originally, the pole was made of bamboo, giving the craft its name, but it is now made with stainless steel. The technique is mastered by only a handful of performers worldwide. Two of those performers are Russian couple Alexander and Ekaterina Abramov who are now

ORLANDO THEN & NOW
THE HISTORY OF
THE ROGERS BUILDING By Alexandra Mariano
In the heart of downtown, on the corner of Pine Street and Magnolia Avenue, is a building that seems out of place with its viridian façade, wine accents, and narrow windows. While many of our readers have wandered in to check out the latest Gallery at Avalon Island exhibit, most don’t realize that this antiquated wonder was built in 1886, making it the oldest operational building in the City Beautiful. It was added to US National Register of Historic Places on July 7, 1983. A daily sight for many in the central business district, the the Rogers Building is named after Britain-native Gordon Rogers who immigrated in the late 19th century. While other British immigrants managed citrus groves and cattle farms, Rogers embraced the American drive for entrepreneurship, establishing an English Club designed by William H. Mullins. The result was a beautiful cyprus building in the Queen Anne revival style, a neutral shade of beige. Since its conception, the building’s popularity has always fluctuated. In the 1880s just as much as today, though, it was loved. As the English Club, gentlemen danced in the second-floor hall and grabbed a drink from the Cosmopolitan Club downstairs. In the mid-1890s, however, a harsh winter killed orange trees, sending many patrons back to England. Before leaving, Rogers renovated his building in 1910, covering the stucco walls with imported pressed zinc plates. From the freeze onward, there were many tenants. In the early 1900s the South Florida Sentinel printing press (a precursor to the Orlando Sentinel) settled in. The 1920s welcomed Lucius Duncan’s furniture
business. In the 1930s the upstairs hall oversaw the First Spiritualist Church, Puritan Sisterhood of the Dames, Workers Alliance, Brick Masons & Plasterers International Union, Royal Neighbors of America, Modern Woodmen of the World, Southern School of Commerce, and Jennie Mills’ Beauty Shoppe. The 1950s saw the rise and fall of Arthur Murray’s Studio of Dancing and four restaurants owned by Clarence Badore, Alma Sheeley, Harry Hoffman, and Morton Taylor. Hoffman’s was the most successful, selling full meals for 65 cents.
In the 1970s Taylor’s Korner Kitchen was bought by W. D. Driggers and renamed J & J Restaurant after Driggers’ daughters. Driggers renovated the space before selling to Frank Suriano, who once again changed the name. Suriano’s was popular with jurors from 90 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
the courthouse— notably during the Ted Bundy trial—until 1983 when Suriano passed away of cancer, the lease expired, rent doubled, and widow Mamie Suriano decided to close shop. After the building’s restaurant-reign ended, Bob Cuellar’s Locksmith Service was the only tenant until the 90s. The summer of 1999 changed everything with two words: green and art. Ford Kiene bought the structure; with architect Chalmers Yielding, he restored the heart-of-pine flooring and gave the building its now-iconic forest green and rust red Victorian paint job. In October 2000 the Gallery at Avalon Island and Guinevere's coffeehouse opened, both referencing Camelot and honoring the building’s English origins. In November 2001 the Mad Cow Theatre found its first permanent home there; its opening show was the children’s play Mole’s Homecoming: A Holiday Tail. In 2003 the Downtown Media Arts Center monopolized the building but was short-lived, closing in 2006. Now, Gallery at Avalon Island still stands proudly, welcoming Orlandoans inside the Rogers Building to soak in the city’s grassroots artistic culture while bearing witness to over a century of history in one ornate green building on the corner of Pine and Magnolia.

JESSILYN PARK the Artist By Cathleen K. Bode
A mere three years ago, Jessilyn Park didn't know she could even paint. In December 2011, she visited with her grandmother, who was a great painter in her time but quit painting because she lost her eyesight. Jessilyn went there to talk about life, lost love and disappointments. Her grandmother suggested she pick up painting to take her mind off her troubles, Jessilyn hesitated because she knew she had no artistic talent. That's when her grandmother walked over to her, put her hand on her shoulder, and said, "If I could give my talent to you, I would." That's the moment that changed Jessilyn's life forever. The next day Jessilyn was inspired so she went to the craft store and bought supplies. She painted what she thought was a mediocre painting. She posted it on Facebook to show her friends, and to her surprise within hours someone wanted to buy it. "I was in shock. I wasn't expecting anyone to like my art. I was just doing it as a way to pass the time." After that, she painted another and another and she'd put them on Facebook and they would always sell within a few hours. She was amazed and decided to look into a way to become a better artist. After all, she had never even taken one art class. She graduated from UCF with a degree in Communications and Business.

She started a Facebook page and a Twitter account and began posting about her work and her vision. People began liking her page and before she knew it she had a few hundred Likes. This gave her the boost of confidence she needed to seek out professional mentorship. To advance her artwork, and against the advice of family and friends, Jessilyn flew out to Playa del Carmen, Mexico, for a private apprenticeship with renowned, Russian-born impressionist Leonid Afremov. “Everyone was concerned for my safety, but I knew this was the opportunity of a lifetime,” she says. The influence of the impressionist shows in her work in her vibrant colors and broad brushstrokes. Jessilyn uses dazzling hues to bring her highly stylized city and country landscapes and erotic women to life. Her career took off as she landed venues, shows, contracts, and even a wine label in California. Today, she works to bring her
positive and imaginative art to all that find themselves in a hard place. Though she began working with acrylics, Jessilyn now uses oil with a palette knife to finish her creations. This was done in part to emulate the style of her grandmother. "The palette knife was her favorite tool," Jessilyn fondly recalls. Since then, Jessilyn has hoped to tap into the talent passed down through her blood as well as create inspiring scenes for her viewers. “I think art/music has the ability to reach within our souls and change how we feel, live and see things,” she says. “Colors can enhance moods. I try to paint in colors that would inspire happiness in people.” In less than a year, Jessilyn went from unknown to award-winning artist. It is her dearest hope that her message and inspiring story will resonate with the viewer. “I want them to realize that anything is possible,” she says. "Three years ago, I was living my life, working my job, not really knowing that all this would happen." 93 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
Jessilyn's art now appears on everything from watches, scarves, notebooks, ipad covers, duvet covers, shower curtains, area rugs and many more. She has more than 50,000 Likes on her Facebook page and over 100,000 across all social media platforms. "I'm a true believer that we all have a hidden talent," she says. "You just have to tap into, and once you find it don't stop following your passion. Get out there, don't be afraid to be rejected because it will happen. But all it takes is that one person to say yes and that can open up so many doors for you. You just have to keep knocking." Creating a place in your heart and your home for a shelter pup will give you a newfound sense of purpose

Now that those hectic holidays are over and we’re already in the new year, there’s no better time than now to adopt a new best friend. Adopting a dog or a cat is a wonderful way to fill your home, your year, and your life with joy. But with all of the breeders and pet stores out there, why is adoption the best answer when it comes to picking a pet? We have five reasons why a shelter pet could be the perfect option for you and the pet of your choice.
subscribe now!
You’re Saving a Life
Each year, 2.7 million dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States because of overcrowding in shelters. If more people chose to adopt pets rather than purchasing them from breeders or pet stores, this shockingly high number could quickly diminish. When you adopt a dog or a cat, you are saving the life of a furry friend and making necessary room for abandoned dogs & cats in need of shelter space.
You’ll Get Quality and Care
Contrary to popular belief, animal shelters are full of perfectly healthy pets-to-be. Most adoptable dogs and cats end up in shelters simply because their previous owners can no longer care for them due to events such as moving, not because there are problems with the pets. Also, when you adopt a pet from a shelter, the cost of spaying or neutering as well as their first vaccinations are included in the adoption price.
You’ll Help End Puppy & Kitten Mills
Puppy & kitten mills are factory-style facilities that breed animals in inhumane conditions and lack the proper medical and nutritional care. Most of the puppies & kittens purchased in pet stores come from these mills, and because of the high profit they receive, the only way to bring an end to the mills is to stop supporting them. Adopting puppies & kittens from shelters is a sure method of restricting the growth of these mills.
Adopted Dogs & Cats Benefit Your Health
We all know that the unconditional love from an animal friend is one of the greatest treasures in the world, but did you know that it can improve your psychological and physical health? Creating a place in your heart and your home for a shelter pup or kitten will give you a newfound sense of purpose that can prevent feelings of loneliness, which boosts both your spirit and energy levels.
It’s Easy and Local
With organizations like the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, animal adoption is an easy and fun process that brings you the dog or cat of your dreams.Their website offers detailed tips about how to choose the right pet for you and your family, and you can download an adoption application at home to bring with you to the shelter. To learn more about the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando, visit www.PetAllianceOrlando.org, or stop in at their Orlando shelter, located at 2727 Conroy Road, Orlando, FL. Now that you know all the benefits of adopting a furry friend, what are you waiting for? There’s a friendly face in a shelter longing for a forever family, and you could be the perfect match. You’ll change a pet’s life, and your life will surely never be the same.
