PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers, Summer in Orlando is always full of the vibrant spirit of Florida, from our world-renowned theme parks and signature resorts to fresh summer dining in the finest local restaurants. There’s nothing like catching a concert at the Amway Center on a hot summer night, strolling through shops at Disney Springs, or celebrating the Fourth of July with some of the best and brightest firework shows in the country! This season, we greeted the summer months with bittersweet hearts, remembering all those who were affected by the Pulse terror attack. One year ago, Orlando mourned the indescribable loss of 49 beautiful lives, and since then, it has been our mission as a city to make Orlando a place full of hope and purpose. On June 12, we gathered together to commemorate those whose lives were lost and to celebrate the lives of the survivors, while praying for better days after such a life-changing event. Although we will never be the same as we move forward from this tragedy, we have the opportunity to create an atmosphere that will provide support to the LGBTQ community and safety from future terror attacks. As Americans, we believe that there is nothing more important than doing what is right for our country and its people, and we must raise awareness for the needs of our LGBTQ citizens and our nation as a whole. We’ve definitely grown as a city through these trials, but I remain positive that if we come together to support each other, we can lead by example and redefine our destiny as a city beaming with love and compassion. Now that Florida’s favorite season is in full swing, we at Orlando Style want this to be your best summer yet. We’re bringing you all the sizzling mid-year trends and the not-to-be-missed local hot spots you’ll definitely want to experience. In this special Summer Double Issue, you’ll find a delicious look at Orlando’s Best Burgers, so food-

lovers, rejoice! We’ll also be taking you on a sweet summer getaway to Hammock Beach Resort, Florida’s premier oceanfront destination. Of course, you’ll need inspiration for all of your beach and resort wear over the next few months, so look no further than our Cuba Libre photoshoot, with fashionable finds shot in exquisite Cuba. Summer would not be complete without taking some time for rest and relaxation, and here at Orlando Style, we find the greatest joy in helping you find yours. We are so thankful for all of our readers and advertisers who faithfully stand beside us throughout the years. We wish you all the most wonderful summer! Have a happy Fourth of July, and may you find peace this summer, whether on an exotic getaway or spending a night out in the city. Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode Publisher

HAMMOCK BEACH RESORT

Endless experiences and luxurious living at the beachfront of the Atlantic Ocean With a name like “Hammock Beach Resort,” I expected nothing short of ultimate relaxation and carefree comfort during my stay at Salamander Hotels’ luxurious property. After three days overlooking two miles of Atlantic beach on Florida’s Palm Coast, it’s safe to say that the property lived up to both its name and its reputation. An extraordinary treasure, Hammock Beach Resort sits nestled on a stretch of unspoiled beach and welcomes guests of all ages to its haven through exceptional customer service and world-class amenities. Unlike standard hotels, their multi-bedroom villas and suites allow guests to experience resort living while still enjoying the comforts of home, which I wasted no time in doing.

By Cathleen K. Bode

When it came to dining options, I was incredibly impressed by the vast variety of resort restaurants and bars situated throughout Hammock Beach Resort. From enjoying breakfast on the patio at Delfinos to chatting with my companions over lunch on the patio of The Terrace, stunning views and refreshing ocean air drew us to eat outside, though both indoor and outdoor dining options are available. The Terrace featured an approachable menu with everything from local seafood and prime cuts of beef to farm fresh offerings and an extensive by-the-glass wine list. In addition to enjoying breakfast at Delfinos, we also returned to the establishment at night to enjoy the warmth of a premier, yet homemade Italian dinner. The menu highlighted regional Italian cuisine with a contemporary twist, such as my appetizer of charred octopus and market salad with passion fruit vinaigrette. Our primi course came in the form of short rib ragu with pappardelle pasta and roasted tomatoes before being followed by a secondo course of grouper topped with early spring vegetables, grilled scallions and kimchi dashi broth. My sweet tooth delighted in our dessert of deconstructed s’mores, which brought the exceptional meal to a close, but the

night wasn’t over just yet. With the resort’s Lobby Bar and Loggerheads Lounge open for after-dinner drinks, my companions and I had the freedom to enjoy cocktails, billiards and sports games on a 16-foot TV screen in a relaxing, comfortable setting. From beachside dining to beach-inspired pampering, the Spa at Hammock Beach offered serenity and luxury with the very best massages, treatments and nail services. With the option to treat your body to a relaxing massage, refresh your skin with a facial or pamper your hands and feet with rejuvenating treatments, you are sure to find a treatment tailored just for you. After much consideration, I opted for the 50 minute Hammock Facial. The signature facial was developed by estheticians based on the spa’s namesake massage, The Hammock Massage. The relaxing facial featured a blending elements of European, aromatherapy and hot stone facials to create a unique experience that was a delight for all my senses and put that healthy glow back into my face. From Thalassotherapy products rich with minerals from the sea to coquina-laden scrubs, the spa draws from the bountiful resources of the sea and unspoiled beach, which has resulted in an award-winning facility of seaside inspired services in 11 exquisitely appointed treatment rooms. Perhaps Hammock Beach Resort is best known for offering tremendous views and a challenging test for golfers at every skill level through their two championship golf courses. Hammock Beach’s Ocean Course, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Design, features beautiful lakes, elevated mounds, and bunkers, which are made of native coquina sand. The 7,201 yard, par 72 course is known for its six Atlantic Ocean-hugging holes and an exhilarating finale know as “The Bear Claw.” It is also the only true oceanfront golf course in the state of Florida. Unfortunately, the Ocean Course has been closed since October when it was heavily damaged by Hurricane Matthew. Fortunately for the ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM |

many fans of the Ocean Course, the resort has taken a long-term view regarding conditioning and opted to conduct a complete course restoration. The extensive restoration work, which is being undertaken in conjunction with Nicklaus Design, includes re-grassing all fairways, greens and rough with the salt-tolerant Platinum Paspalum as well as reconstructing each tee box, bunker and green complex. The course is scheduled to reopen in October 2017. In the meantime, Hammock Beach’s Conservatory Course, a Tom Watson Signature Design is Florida’s longest and is truly a masterpiece. It continues to accommodate guest and member play. It was there where my companions and I experienced a relaxing golf lesson with Director of Golf, Brad Hauer. Less than an hour away from the blissful relaxation of Hammock Beach Resort is the sun, fun, history and mystery of St. Augustine. For an entire day, my companions and I explored the cobblestone streets of the nation’s oldest city and enjoyed a tour of experiences showcasing the heart of historic St. Augustine. Our first stop was Lightner Museum, home to one of the country’s best collections of fine and decorative 19th century art. From typewriters and Tiffany glass to shrunken heads and human hair art, Otto Lightner’s eclectic collection was both impressive and extensive. From there, we got our hearts pumping with a historic walking tour along the bayfront to Castillo de San Marcos, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The large Spanish stone fortress is now a national monument and, at over 315 years old, it’s the oldest structure in St. Augustine. From the numerous rooms that once housed soldiers and prisoners to the large interior courtyard and gun deck, which offers a great view of the city, there was plenty to explore at the Castillo and when hunger struck, there was no shortage of exquisite dining options nearby. We were delighted to end up at Michael’s Tasting Room. The casual, yet fine-dining restaurant was located in historic downtown and specialized in fresh seasonal cuisine with a Spanish flare. As darkness began to fall, we then boarded “The Trolley of the Doomed” to explore the darker side of the nation’s oldest city. The Ghosts and Gravestones Ghost Tour brought our beautiful day to a close with haunted tales and spooky legends at every corner. On our final evening at the resort, my companions and I gathered at the fire pit on the Ocean Event Lawn for after-dinner cocktails and stargazing. It was a beautiful end to an even more beautiful and memorable weekend. With no shortage of things to see and do both within and beyond the Hammock Beach property, you are sure to delight in your own adventure upon visiting. Enjoy drinks, sports and a fresh sushi menu at the Lobby Bar. Go on a “Behind the Seas Tour” and experience dolphins up close and personal at the world’s first oceanarium, Marineland Dolphin Adventure, which is an adventure you’ll not soon forget! Grab your kayak and enjoy a day of paddling fun with Tropical Kayaks guided tours through the Intracoastal Waterway and nearby wetlands. Feel the wind in your hair as you cruise the waterway in search of dolphins frolicking about. Enjoy Hammock Beach Resort in “fun” style and explore the area courtesy of complimentary bicycle rentals. Hone in your putting game as you enjoy a complimentary ninehole, professionally manicured putting course that offers a fun challenge for professionals and novices alike. Experience water park adventures as you float down the lazy river, zip down a water flume and watch the kids build a poolside sandcastle at the resort’s 91,000 square-foot water pavilion. Whether it’s a return trip or your first visit, come on out with your family and friends and enjoy a relaxing, and exciting getaway!

CHEERS TO SUMMER!

Watermelon & Cucumber Mojitos Recipe 1 seedless watermelon 1/2 cucumber 2 limes, juiced 1/2 cup mint, muddled 8 oz vodka, chilled 1 bottle sparkling water, chilled Ice cubes

Stay cool this summer with a subtle spin on your average mojito. Replacing the typically heady rum with a soft splash of vodka assists in a harmonious, fruity flavor. Delicately fresh with watermelon and cucumber, this icy drink is glacial perfection. Pulp is not required but if partial to texture, then it can be added in any amount. Sparkling water and lime lend a mild kick to the muted fruits.

Fans of fresh herbs will be especially keen on the addition of mint, whether it is from a personal garden or the store. If a sweeter flavor is preferred, simple syrup or sugar can be added, as well as an ample dose of watermelon. For anyone with an aesthetic flair, a wedge of watermelon and cucumber slices make this drink ideal for hosting guests. Simple to make and enjoy, test out these tantalizing flavors during summer get-togethers or when relaxing poolside.

- In a blender, blend watermelon and cucumber together. Strain using a fine mesh sieve to remove pulp and set juice aside (in fridge to chill). - Juice limes, then muddle with mint using a wooden spoon or a muddler. - Put the mixture in a shaker with ice and shake for 15-20 seconds. Strain into a large pitcher. - Then add vodka and a bottle of sparkling water. - Pour into glasses filled with ice and enjoy!

Let staffers steer you toward the perfect drink selection. Music plays in the bar, but an open layout lets everyone enjoy the vibe, whether the band is playing hot or cool.” USA TODAY - 10 BEST

From June 6th-11th, Finding Neverland took over the Dr. Phillips Center and brought to life the incredible story behind one of the world’s most beloved characters: Peter Pan. the sun beams down on us hard. It is very important to protect your skin! But be aware of what you are putting on your skin because ingredients matter, and in the store, seeing all the different options, who knows what to buy? What’s the difference between SPF 70 and SPF 100? Next time you’re searching for sunscreen, here are some things to look for and some things to steer away from. WHAT TO LOOK FOR: • Choose SPFs between 15 and 50 ( after 50 its all the same). • Broad-spectrum coverage - Protects against both types of rays: UVB and UVA. • Water-resistant. It must specify whether it protects the skin for 40 or 80 minutes of swimming and/or sweating. • Sunscreen that uses mineral and/or organic components.

WHAT TO AVOID: • Sunscreens with vitamin A - Good for eating, but not for the skin. • Oxybenzone - It is synthetic estrogen that can penetrate the skin and disrupt your hormone system. • Avoid any skin and/or lip products with ingredients including octinoxate, homosalate or paraben preservatives. • Sunscreens with insect repellent - If you need repellent, buy it separately and put it on first. Keep these tips in mind on your next trip to the beach, and you and your skin will be covered!

with their fabrics! One of the biggest fashion mistakes you’ll ever make is losing yourself in the heap of the latest trends. Don’t forget about the one person you’re buying these clothes for: Yourself. Be true to who you are. Supply yourself with what speaks to you the most in designer collections. Take the time to find out what looks good on you. Have you always been a fan of slim fit jeans? Perhaps a more tailored suit would look better. Make sure you’re looking for the perfect style for the perfect you, and never settle for anything less.

IF IT FITS,

buy it in every color.

If there is one fashion tip we could possibly give you, it’s this: literally buy the same shoes, tops, pants, coats, even an accessory, in different colors. That really sexy top you came across in Hugo Boss? Buy two more in different colors! Different colored clothes gives you more options of what to wear throughout your week. If that sexy shirt your wife/husband thinks looks absolutely stunning on you, consider this option. There have been countless instances where your cutest T-shirt is about to go into the laundry basket (we’ve all been there), and if you followed this helpful fashion

tip, you would be able to evade this particular scenario by simply putting on a different colored T-shirt that’s exactly the same as your dirty T-shirt. As we have mentioned before, this can apply to any type of clothing; whether you have different colored pants or different colored shoes, just swap them out with similar options in various colors.

COME EQUIPPED Your hair care arsenal is not complete without one of these hair kits. THINK BIG THINK FULLER Thicker, long lasting hair tips right here! Naturally, when it comes to good hair, we as men think of a full head of hair. But why stop there? Take care of your hair by understanding how to maintain good hair and avoid hair damage and hair loss. By utilizing these tips, you have a higher chance of a memorable first impression, and even getting more engaging compliments in your confidence vault.

Gentlemen, we love wearing hats. Let’s face it, we can’t evade putting on the simple snap-back or even a beanie on a bad hair day. But the problem with hats is that they don’t give our hair a chance to breathe and have some fresh air. That increases the chances of hair loss, and unless it is by choice, no young man with good hair wants to be bald at 30. Now, we’re not saying to avoid hats at all costs (After all, hats are very stylish these days). We recommend you wear them on the right occasions, and not on an every day basis. For maintaining your hair health, a good wash with beneficial shampoo and conditioner will do the trick. But one thing is for certain: when you get out of that shower, dry your hair (pat-drying is definitely preferred). When we say pat-drying, we literally mean to take the towel and pat your hair dry. Dragging the towel on your head only causes your hair to bunch up and frizz out. Damp hair is

prone to damage, and drying your hair incorrectly is one of the leading causes of damaged hair. Hair begins at the base of your head, the scalp. Your hair is essentially protein and an extension of your scalp, and both should be treated with care. Wash your scalp daily to minimize those clogged pores and clear out those skin flakes because nobody likes a dirty head. As mentioned before, you should use good shampoo for roughly two minutes. Be sure to also take advantage of exfoliating once or twice a week. Washing your hair in hot water or excessively using a blow dryer to your hair can cause dryness of the scalp. Should scalp dryness occur, always be sure to replenish moisture by using a hydrating conditioner to eliminate dryness at the source. With these helpful tips, be sure to use them to your advantage to better yourself so that in the future you can land that awesome interview or fulfill that perfect first date.

CELEBRITY SOUP

Careers Launched by

Viral Fame The Stars Who Owe It All To The Internet

52

| STYLETOME.COM

By Riesa Pascal

CELEBRITY SOUP

From Damn Daniel and Chewbacca Mom to Antoine Dodson’s ‘Bed Intruder’ rant, these days it feels like a new viral celebrity is born every second! Internet stardom comes in the blink of an eye, and there’s no telling when a completely random video will suddenly go viral and amass millions of views. Sometimes these celebs desire the fame and embrace the experience, and other times, they don’t. Either way, they’re irrevocably tossed into the spotlight and forced to survive the intense and sudden scrutiny of the world wide web. Here are several stars who turned their viral fame into a living and found themselves with brand new careers!

MICHELLE PHAN When it comes to making a fortune out of viral fame, who else to start with then arguably one of Youtube’s most successful stars? 30-year-old Michelle Phan was one of the earliest YouTube adopters to share beauty tutorials on her channel. When a couple of her videos were picked up by BuzzFeed, she got her first taste of viral fame and it was all uphill from there. Over the past ten years, Michelle has uploaded hundreds of DIY videos and amassed nearly 9 million subscribers and one billion video views. In addition to working with Lancome, L’Oreal, and releasing her own line of cosmetics, Michelle has also built a $500 million subscription beauty sampling company and achieved a personal net worth of an impressive $3 million. JEREMY MEEKS From attractive felon to high-end fashion model, Jeremy Meeks is a rare example of when a life of crime DOES pay! In June 2014, Jeremy Meeks was dubbed the “hottest felon” in the world after his police mugshot went viral. After serving his time in prison, Jeremy was released in 2016 and left his life of crime behind to pursue one of the many modeling offers he received as an inmate. The 33-year-old—who has also been nicknamed The Blue Eyed Bandit and Jail Bae—has since modelled at New York Fashion Week and now drives to and from his luxury mansion in a beautiful Maserati. He has over one million Instagram followers and 500K Facebook likes, but unfortunately the fame and money isn’t enough to entirely bury his criminal past. Due to his status as an ex-con, Jeremy was recently deported from the UK less than eight hours after landing at Heathrow Airport to take part in a fashion photo shoot. LAINA MORRIS You may have never heard of Laina Morris, but if you’re familiar with internet memes, you’ve definitely seen her picture before. Several years ago, Laina filmed a spoof entry to a Justin Bieber contest that featured her singing her own creepy lyrics to the tune “Girlfriend” with a crazy, wide-eyed stare. Though Laina didn’t win the contest, someone uploaded a screenshot of her submission to the social-sharing site Reddit, and within hours the picture had gone viral. The following morning, it had become the meme known as Overly Attached Girlfriend and Laina wasted no time cashing in on her viral fame. While she’s not a millionaire yet, she’s since been able to drop out of school and quit her job to become a full-time YouTuber. She has even invested in professional management for her comedy channel that now has a following of 1.2 million subscribers. From entering a silly fan contest to forging a successful YouTube career, Laina’s overnight meme status quite literally changed her life. DANIELLE BREGOLI Of course this article wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the biggest viral celebrity of the year, Danielle Bregoli! If you’ve never heard the saying, “Cash Me Ousside How Bow Dah,” consider yourself lucky. It is the infamous and now trademarked catchphrase that Danielle hollered on Dr. Phil in September 2016, while trying to challenge the audience to a fight. The unruly 13-year old was brought on the talk show by her fed-up mother, but Danielle’s foul-mouth and “off the streets” accent quickly stole the show and made her an instant viral celebrity. With over ten million Instagram followers and nearly two million Facebook likes, it’s not surprising that Danielle has since signed a reality show deal and is preparing a nationwide tour, where she expects to make at least $50K a stop. Sources watching her net worth estimate Danielle will be a millionaire by the end of 2017…how bow dah?! STYLETOME.COM |

SHAWN MENDES LIVE IN ORLANDO If you don’t know who Shawn Mendes is, you’re only one of a few. The young guitar-slinging singer has taken over the Top 40—and has captured the hearts of the most adoring female fans along the way. In anticipation of his second album, Illuminate, Shawn Mendes is headlining his first world tour with special guest Charlie Puth, heating up the Florida summer with some of the hottest tracks of 2017. A night at the Amway Center is certainly a long way from Mendes’ Canadian roots; born in Toronto, the teen heartthrob probably did not set his sights on international fame when he posted his first videos of himself singing on Vine. With 22.3 million followers on Instagram and nearly 6.4 million Facebook fans, Mendes has swooned music lovers young and old in only a short few years in the spotlight. Shawn Mendes is currently one of America’s favorite pop stars, and for those who are not loyal fans of the 18-year-old singer, it may be surprising to hear that he built an impressive base of social media followers on his own. Only a year 54

| STYLETOME.COM

by Courtney Caggiano

after teaching himself to play guitar by studying YouTube tutorial videos around age 13, he began recording videos of cover songs online, gaining millions of views and followers in a matter of months. Mendes became so well known for his unique renditions of hit singles that he caught the ear of artist manager Andrew Gertler, who discovered him in 2013. By 2014, Mendes was the third mostfollowed musician on Vine, and was signed to Island Records where he would release his first single, “Life of the Party.” The track made Mendes the youngest artist to debut in the top 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Handwritten, Mendes’ first fulllength album, allowed the young singer to garner a winder range of fans that stretched far beyond his social media outlets. Although the album was successful—selling 106,00 copies in its first week—it was the first single from his sophomore album, “Treat You Better,” that separated Mendes from the other up-and-coming online stars in the making. Unlike his pop music contemporaries, Mendes opted for a softer,

classic rock-inspired sound to create timeless songs that would stand out from the sea of synthesized tracks flooding radio at the time. This new direction of sonic innovation, characterized in his fan favorite, “Mercy,” allowed Mendes to adapt beyond the identity of a teenage pop star; he was now able to grow into an artist blooming with mature musicianship and taste. His latest single, “There’s Nothing Holding Me Back,” shows a different side of the songwriter, offering a minimalistic palette of sound that highlights the strength of Mendes’ wild and raspy voice. Fans all over the world are counting down the days until the September release of his next album, but you have the chance to hear songs from Illuminate live at the Amway Center. Make sure to get your tickets to this on-trend concert event that will certainly be a summer night you wont want to miss.

Active Aerodynamics Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA) The Huracán Performante adopts Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva (ALA): ALA is also the Italian word for wing. This patented active aerodynamic system developed by Lamborghini for the Huracán Performante provides an active variation of

aero load for high down force or low drag. The system is completely integrated into the vehicle in terms of design, weight and performance. The front spoiler integrates the electric motor of the front ALA system, built in a carbon forged frame with active flaps on the top exterior surface. The rear bonnet is designed around the air ducts to the rear wing as well as the wing pylons. Lamborghini’s Piattaforma Inerziale (LPI) governs all the car’s electronic systems in ‘real time’ and is perfectly integrated with the ALA system, activating the ALA system flaps in less than 500 milliseconds to ensure the best aerodynamic set-up of the car in every driving condition. When ALA is off, the active flaps inside the front spoiler are closed, generating the desired high downforce for high speed cornering and full brake conditions. When ALA switches to on the front flaps are opened by the front electric motor, reducing air pressure on the front spoiler and directing air flow via an inner channel and through the specially shaped underside of the car. This drastically reduces drag and optimizes conditions for maximum acceleration and top speed. In the rear of the Performante four ducts are installed below the rear bonnet. The two central ducts are always open to allow underhood ventilation and exhaust cooling, while the two external ducts are connected to the inner channels of the rear wing. The air flow through the rear wing channels is controlled by two electro-actuated flaps. The entire system is 80% lighter than a traditional hydraulic system.

in high speed cornering and full braking by creating maximum vertical downforce; 750% more than a Huracán coupé. The LPI turns on the ALA in high throttle conditions, opening the rear flaps to allow air through the rear wing’s inner channels and directing air flow through ridges underneath the wing. This reduces drag and maximizes the car’s acceleration and top speed capabilities. In addition, the rear wing’s inner air channel is split right and left, allowing aero vectoring for high speed cornering. Depending on the direction of the turn, the LPI instructs ALA to be switched on in either the right or left side of the spoiler, increasing downforce and traction on the inner wheel, counteracting the load transfer in rolling conditions. This in turn optimizes the chassis’ momentum, requiring a reduced steering angle and improving the car’s overall dynamic stability. Price of the Lamborghini Huracán Performante and Market Delivery The first customers will take delivery of the new Lamborghini Huracán Performante this summer at suggested retail price of $274,390 (suggested retail price taxes/GST excluded). Engine: 5.2 liter V10 HP: 640 hp 0-62 mph: 2.9 seconds Top Speed: 202 mph

When ALA is off the rear flaps are closed, permitting the rear wing to act as a traditional fixed wing. Stability is enhanced

SUPPLEMENTAL TRAVEL INSURANCE: IS IT WORTH IT? By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley

Summer is officially here: the kids are out

of school, Florida’s sun is unrelenting and the I4 corridor is crammed with tourists at all hours of the day. For us Floridians, escaping the crowds and heat with a summer sojourn is essential. And as we plan our vacations, we each implement our own methods of preparing for travel… packing cubes? Check luggage or carry on? Should I purchase travel insurance? The last question is asked each time you book your ticket – and if I may assume the usual answer is to decline such insurance – but there are many plans out there that cover more than your flight and luggage loss. And on a recent trip to Italy, my travel buddy happened to purchase a comprehensive travel insurance plan for a whopping $38.00. “Do you want one?” she asked. I pushed it aside, relying on the comfort of my credit card-issued travel insurance and declined.

58

| STYLETOME.COM

And then it happened. We got into a little, um, fender-bender. We were okay; the car, however, was not. And as luck should have it, I was the primary driver (definitely not my fault!) and the car was rented with my credit card. For those who don’t know, rental car companies in Europe are not sympathetic (I learned this the hard way years ago, hence my concern). So prior to calling the rental car company, I began my investigation. Was the damage to the car covered? What if I was hurt, would my medical costs be covered? Here are a few things I learned: 1. Look at your primary medical insurance policy for coverage first. If you are hurt or injured and need medical assistance, the first policy that will be examined for coverage is your primary medical insurance. If your primary policy does not cover you overseas, then “supplemental policies” will kick in.

2. Travel insurance offered by your credit cards is considered supplemental to your primary health and auto insurance. Most credit cards offer some level of coverage for auto accidents, lost luggage and medical emergencies. The trick is, in order for the credit card insurance policies to kick in, you generally have to book your travel reservations, hotels, flights and cars with that particular credit card. Then, if it’s determined your primary policies do not cover, the credit card insurance will kick in. 3. Don’t forget to decline the additional coverage offered by rental agencies and airlines! Here is where it gets tricky. Most credit card companies require, as a condition precedent to utilizing the travel insurance offered in your membership agreement, that you DECLINE all additional coverage options offered by the airlines and rental car agencies. So when Hertz asks if you want insurance for

IN THE KNOW

an extra $18.00 a day – NO. This may seem contrary to logic, but in most cases you will end up in a worse position if you elect to take the additional coverage. 4. Third party comprehensive travel insurance policies are also considered supplemental policies. They “fill the gaps” left by your primary insurance policies, similar to the credit card policies. Often times, these travel policies are far more comprehensive than primary and credit card policies and allow for the policyholder to choose various levels of coverage in areas such as medical, lost luggage, flight cancellation and even unorthodox situations like losses due to terrorist-related events. 5. Watch for exclusions! Truly, prior to this incident I thought American Express was the

gold standard. Wrong. While I love my Amex for many reasons, their rental car insurance policy was riddled with exclusions, such as covering rental cars in Italy (what are the chances); cars with a FMV over $50,000.00; SUVs; many “exotic” models (which were not so exotic); cars driven on dirt roads; etc. This was much to my dismay; Amex has gotten me out of many overseas travel jams before. Chase Sapphire Reserve ended up providing better insurance than I have at home through my primary policies – highly recommend this card for travel. So what’s the takeaway? Every situation will be different, however it’s best that you understand your primary policies, how they operate overseas in various situations (you will have to review both your medical and auto policies). Once you understand the coverage

provided, you will see where the “gaps” are – this is where your supplemental insurance will kick in. Read through your credit card policies PRIOR to making your reservations and flight purchases; your credit card’s insurance policy may be the deciding factor in what card you use for your trip. And lastly, third party supplemental travel insurance isn’t totally redundant, particularly when it comes to medical insurance. Just make sure that your election to participate in one supplemental policy doesn’t negate your ability to utilize the one you may really need.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature

WHAT FEDERAL JURORS SHOULD KNOW BUT AREN’T TOLD Service as a juror ensures that personal liberty is protected from government abuse. By returning a verdict of not guilty in a criminal case, jurors effectively veto police and prosecutors’ actions that wrongfully seek to punish a citizen. The right to have 12 jurors stand between the government and the citizen facing the loss of liberty was guaranteed by the Founding Fathers in the 6th Amendment of the Constitution.

By Mark L. Horwitz Criminal Defense Attorney Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine St.Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 • F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhorwitzlaw.com

Today’s jurors are not told about the factors that Federal Judges consider when sentencing a defendant. Jurors are also not told of minimum mandatory sentences which require the court to impose imprisonment for two years to life, depending on the crime. Likewise, jurors are not told of the maximum sentence for each charge. Prison terms for 10, 15, or 20 years and longer are common in federal court. The jury is told by the Judge that they are not to consider the punishment when reaching their verdict, yet punishment is a realistic concern to the jurors and society. Jurors are not told that in the early days of this republic, juries routinely returned not guilty verdicts because the punishment was too harsh or the law was improperly applied against the defendant. Many people believe that early parole reduces sentences. Jurors are not told that parole no longer exists in the Federal system and that the defendants will serve 85% of the sentence even with exemplary behavior in prison. Juries do not know that in determining a sentence, the court will consider crimes on which the jury returned not guilty verdicts. For example, if the jury finds the defendant not guilty on four counts of mail fraud and guilty of one count, the sentence can vary from 0 to 20 years in prison. The court will consider the counts on which the defendant was found not guilty as if the defendant was found guilty on the charges. In many cases this will result in a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison rather than probation or a short term of incarceration.

62

| STYLETOME.COM

Juries are also not informed that if the defendant is found guilty of one count, the court, in sentencing, may consider conduct for which the defendant was not even charged and tried. The uncharged acts are never considered by the jury but can significantly increase the sentence. Jurors are also told that they must accept the law given by the court. In the past, many juries returned not guilty verdicts because laws were unfair or applied to the defendant unfairly. One of the most famous examples of this was the prosecution of William Penn in England before he came to America and founded Pennsylvania. Penn was on trial for disturbing the piece for preaching his religion at an unlawful assembly. The court instructed the jury on the law and when the jury returned a verdict of not guilty the court refused to accept it. The judge told the jury to return a verdict of guilty. William Penn told the jury not to give in to the Judge. One of the jurors yelled “Nor will we ever do it” (return a guilty verdict). The jurors were kept in detention for four days and deprived of food; but finally, the Judge accepted the not guilty verdict. The Judge then imposed criminal fines on the jurors for returning the not guilty verdict. The jurors were put in jail until the fines were paid. Four jurors filed a suit to be released from jail. The result of that case was that no juror would again be prosecuted for returning a verdict that the court did not like. In order for jurors to fulfill their constitutional role, many believe they should be told of the potential sentence and that juries have historically returned not guilty verdicts when they believed the law was not proper or was applied unfairly. Today, the court instructs the jury that they must accept the law. The jury’s power to veto government prosecutions with a not guilty verdict is an important cornerstone of our constitutional protections.

MEN WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE ORLANDO’S ELITE DOCTORS: NEUROSURGEON Special Promotional Feature

DR. ROBERT MASSON Showing Up Strong One of the world’s top neurosurgeons and spine health advocates calls Central Florida home. Married 25 years and a father of five, Dr. Robert Masson is driven by a mission to thrive in all aspects of his life and to inspire others to do the same. From family relationships, personal passions and pursuits to professional innovations, community investment and involvement, he leads by example, with the principles of “showing up strong” and “the best you can do is better” guiding all that he does. SERVING AND BUILDING COMMUNITY THROUGH PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP Director of the Spine Center of Excellence at Orlando Health Central Hospital and founder of the NeuroSpine Institute of Orlando, Dr. Masson has served the community for more than two decades, developing new minimally invasive surgical techniques, including his patented iMAS (interpedicular minimal access surgery), while also advancing concepts in spine health prevention, wellness, fitness, prehabilitation, recovery and technology. Together, these innovations are revolutionizing treatment options and improving recovery times for spinal surgery patients throughout the world while at the same time, placing Orlando on the map as a center of innovation in the field. Combining his skills in microsurgery and his passion for sports, Dr. Masson also pioneered the rapidly growing field of sports spine surgery. As a result, his patients include players from the NFL, NBA, PGA/LPGA tours and the U.S. Ski team. A longtime athlete himself and retired Lieutenant Commander of the United States Naval Reserve, he is committed to proving that patients can not only recover from an athletic spine injury, they can become stronger and healthier after treatment. Driven to share his knowledge and experience to help others beyond his own community, Dr. Masson has served as a national advisor

2706 Rew Circle, Orlando, FL 34761

for the use of stem cells and biologics in spine surgery and reconstruction, and also leads as an international educator. In fact, several hundred surgeons from around the world have traveled to Orlando to learn Dr. Masson’s techniques and embrace his approach to achieving optimized recovery spine health solutions. He has also established iMAS centers of excellence and faculty across the United States at the University of Pennsylvania, Virginia Mason in Seattle, and Barnes Washington University in St. Louis as well as in Germany. In addition, Dr. Masson serves as the medical director for Growing Bolder, an Orlando-based company focused on wellness and active lifestyle content creation and delivery across all major media platforms throughout the country. ROOTED IN SERVICE AND COMMITTED TO COMMUNITY Fueled by his professional experience and passion for athletics, in 2005, Dr. Masson started his own charity, NeuroSpine Institute Foundation, which operated for eight years to promote safety and concussion awareness in youth sports at a time when the subject was frequently overlooked. Then four years ago, after suffering a cervical spine injury, Dr. Masson focused his own extreme recovery by pushing himself to train and then climb Mount Kilimanjaro as an ambassador for the Livestrong Foundation just a few months after surgery. That climb, which he did alongside local friends and community leaders Wendy Chioji and Marc Middleton, honored cancer survivors and raised more than $200,000 for the fight against cancer. As part of that experience, Dr. Masson worked with Middleton and Chioji to produce the documentary “Conquering Kilimanjaro,” which raises awareness for the value of the journey and the commitment in the fight against cancer. As a father with a passion for helping youth

achieve and lead, Dr. Masson is also a founding supporter of Dueling Dragons, an innovative program that brings together inner-city, at-risk youth with City of Orlando police officers to become a year-round dragon boat team. The mission is to use the sport to form long-term mentoring relationships at a critical time in the lives of the youth while also building bridges of understanding in the community. Most recently, Dr. Masson has tied community philanthropy into his passion for professional motorsports, proudly wearing the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital’s logo on the prototype car that he races throughout the United States and Canada with his 19-year-old son Kyle, a UCF sophomore, and Rolex 24 and 12 Hours of Sebring winner. From breaking barriers in surgery to advocating healthy living to promoting philanthropy and community causes, Dr, Masson lives by example to serve others and push boundaries to make a difference. When asked about how he does so much, he simply replies, “What the mind believes, the body achieves. My only true fear in life is not giving it my all.”

ORLANDO’S ELITE DOCTORS ANESTHESIOLOGIST Special Promotional Feature

DR. JULIET BURRY

Board Certified Anesthesiologist A board certified anesthesiologist with a fellowship in pain management, Dr. Burry finished her residency in the specialty of anesthesiology at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Florida. She then finished her fellowship in pain management through Moffitt Cancer Center and Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Prior to becoming a physician, Dr. Burry obtained a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and worked as a pharmacist in Florida. Having a background in pharmacy gives her a distinct advantage in her field as well as a unique perspective regarding helping patients with their chronic pain. Research in pain care has resulted in new treatment options for patients, making pain management an ever evolving specialty. A popular and effective treatment that Dr. Burry has been able to bring to Central Florida is Autologous Stem Cell Therapy, which uses the patient’s own beneficial tissues for treatment. This non-surgical, minimallyinvasive technique for pain, caused by joint, tendon or ligament problems, can be a good alternative to surgery. This technique utilizes the patient’s stem cells to harness the immune system’s natural healing ability. By providing long term relief with little to no down time, this in-office procedure has changed the lives of

many patients who would otherwise live with significant disability. Dr. Burry’s desire to provide compassionate care to those suffering from chronic pain is what led her into the specialty of pain management. Being able to care on a personal level for patients every day is the reason she continues to love her profession. Along with her friendly and professional staff, Dr. Burry looks forward to serving Central Florida for many years to come. This summer will mark Dr. Juliet Burry’s 12th year in private practice in pain management. She is happy with her decision to have founded the Pain Management Institute & Aesthetics in Altamonte Springs as it allows her to work independently and give each patient individualized care. She has created a flexible setting where she can spend more time and attention on each case. During the past decade Dr. Burry has also had the opportunity to seek out and provide her patients with innovative treatments to help them feel better and lead more productive lives. This has allowed Dr Burry to stay on the forefront of pain management in Central Florida.

ORLANDO’S ELITE DOCTORS SPORTS MEDICINE Special Promotional Feature

DR. JASON PIROZZOLO Director of Sports Medicine and Trauma Orlando Hand Surgery Associates

Dr. Jason Pirozzolo is the Director of Sports Medicine and Trauma at Orlando Hand Surgery Associates where he specializes in cutting edge non-surgical orthopedic treatment options. “Historically, we have focused on upper extremity orthopedic problems, specifically involving the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and hands,” says Dr. Pirozzolo. “With new regenerative treatment options now available, we have expanded our services to include stem cell and platelet rich plasma injections to all areas of the body.” Dr. Pirozzolo completed his internship and residency at Duke University, and fellowship at Ohio State University where he participated as one of the team physicians at both institutions. While in residency, he received his certification as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Currently, he is an Assistant Clinical Professor at Florida State University and serves on the Board of Governors at the Florida Medical Association. He is also an elected member of the Florida Delegation to the American Medical Association. “What separates Orlando Hand Surgery Associates from other practices is how our physicians work closely together in order to provide the individualized care a patient needs,” says Dr. Pirozzolo. “I am honored to work with three of the best surgeons in the southeast. We have Dr. Brian White and Dr. George

White, both nationally respected microvascular surgeons specializing in shoulders to hands. They are very well complemented by Dr. Anup Patel, who is a Yale and NYU trained plastic surgeon.” Dr. Pirozzolo is also the President of the American Regenerative Medicine Society which is largely focused on research and development of new cost effective non-surgical stem cell and platelet rich plasma treatments that will ultimately help his Central Florida patients, and his patients from around the world. “Being on the forefront of treatment options that can potentially postpone a large knee replacement, shoulder replacement, or a wrist fusion is very exciting. These regenerative modalities can help our patients live life pain free on their own terms, by not backing them into a pre-set treatment algorithm directing patients to a premature joint prostheses or salvage procedure.” In addition to medicine, Dr. Pirozzolo is also a FAA certified pilot and flies everything from helicopters to jets. In fact, every year since 2009, he has flown his airplane up to Tallahassee during session where he is privileged to be in the chamber of the House of Representatives to serve as the physician for our elected State legislators and their staff.

AU REVOIR,JEANS!

The new pant trend that everyone is loving As the decade-long jean reign continues, your closet may start to seem lackluster and repetitive. This year, step away from the jeans and see what the buzz is all about when it comes to khaki pants. Khaki pants offer versatile fabrics that can be equally durable to jeans and can look less casual. There are also three different tones of khaki, allowing more outfit options for an array of seasons. The most popular are the standard, beigebrown khaki. Light khakis lean toward yellowbrown, and dark khakis are green-brown or olive.

Khaki pants are also available in a wide range of styles. Chinos are one of the most common, similar to skinny jeans with a slim fit and invisible seams. Other styles available include high waisted, straight legged, boyfriend fit, and more. Khakis are made in every style that jeans come in but come with the benefit of looking business-ready.

THE ORIGINAL BIRKIN Love it or hate it? Made of straw, rattan or wicker, this comeback would make Jane Birkin proud. The basket bag trend is in full swing with classic and practical summer vibes. Minimalistic or with a modern touch of leather and clasps, a woven basket adds a chic touch to any outfit. Unlike some handbags, it is practical for beach days and mimosa-filled mornings alike. Available in every shape and size you can imagine, this style has an equally varying price range.

OUT & ABOUT

By Hannah Filiatreau

Featured across social media as the trending vacation recreation, stand up paddleboarding (S.U.P.) is surprisingly accessible. A trip to Bora Bora is not required for this meditative day trip. Sparkling clear waters and nature-filled coastlines are readily available in Tampa. A range of environments for paddleboarders of varying skill levels and interests are relatively abundant. Unlike many areas of the state, Tampa hosts both inland and coastal paddleboarding hot spots. It is also home to the Florida Boarder Company, an especially helpful hand for novice boarders. Working from the Hillsborough River, the business holds skill classes, offers group tours, and keeps a reference list of areas that allow boarding. Similar to a cross between surf boarding and kayaking, S.U.P. offers the best of both activities. It requires an obtainable skill set that utilizes more of the body than kayaking but less strength than surfing. However, be warned, seeing someone paddleboard makes it appear less challenging than it actually is. It is very beneficial for balance and endurance. Holding stance for a long period of time and constantly contracting at the core is draining. Keeping the work in mind, do not let the learning process deter any interests of paddleboarding. Out on the open water or gliding down a shaded river, it is worth every ache. Paddleboarding allows a better view of scenery than sitting at the water’s height, especially when viewing wildlife. More than one style of board is available to cater to speeds and other activities. Long and skinny boards allow greater speeds whereas wide and thick boards help with stability. Keeping still offers an array of other activities, such as fishing, yoga and meditation. Being a single rider also means more independence than boating or canoeing.

For any activity, Tampa has a body water, although some areas may require more skill than others. Weeki Wachee Springs is a tranquil water, perfect for beginners and anyone looking to hone in on new skills. It is also ideal for an easy glide downstream. Lettuce Lake park is a natural floodplain with similar waters but does not provide rentals. It has less traffic for this reason and may be better for paddleboarders with personal equipment. Boarders interested in a group tour or lessons may prefer the Tampa Bay Preserve. This option can be scheduled online and all equipment is included. It is a great option for a taste of paddleboarding before purchasing your own equipment, as well as a family or group outing. Professional or more experienced paddleboarders are likely to prefer secluded areas to explore or to avoid working around beginners. Davis Island’s calm waters allow one of the best scenic views and a chance to see wildlife. Tours are also available but the large area allows boarders to keep their distance. Whether it is to view nature or enjoy a relaxing day away from the standard beach crowd, paddleboarding offers something for all ages. Check local rivers, springs and beaches for allowance and equipment availability when planning a trip.

BEST FRIENDS

SUNBURN Though commonly overlooked, dogs are not impervious to sunburn. It is also more common in some breeds, especially those with short coats, such as pitbulls, weimaraners, and dalmations. Make sure your dog’s undercoat is left untouched and keep hair at an appropriate length. Areas especially perceptible include underbellies and ears.

Summer Dangers By Hannah Filiatreau

When it comes to summer, taking your dog out to join in the festivities is about as good as it gets. Summer fun also brings with it some dangers particular to dogs. Knowing what to watch out for this year will help in keeping your pooch happy and in good health. Most owners know about dehydration and heat stroke, but what about the surprising and forgotten risks? Take a look at these common threats that you may have been overlooking:

TICKS Check your pup regularly after taking a walk, and be especially thorough on dogs with thick coats. This is notably important when visiting wooded or tall grassy areas prone to ticks. The best way to prevent ticks is by keeping up with their medication administration. If your dog does develop an illness from Lyme disease, the most common signs are lameness, lethargy, and enlarged lymph nodes. WATER SPORTS Even if you are not taking part in the action, always take care to make sure your dog is restrained or wearing a flotation device when near bodies of water. Not all dogs like water or can swim, and it is a skill best left to test out at home rather than on accident. Always rinse soon after a swim and provide clean drinking water, as salt and pool water can host bacteria and be harmful when consumed or left to dry on a dog’s coat. SNAKES AND BEES While one is worse than the other, it is best to steer clear of both pests. If a snake is spotted in your yard, leave it be and keep pets indoors until it has left. To avoid snakes, keep yards mowed and free of debris as they often like hiding in shaded areas. If your dog is bitten by a snake contact a vet immediately. If a bee is encountered, a vet is not typically necessary. Allow the swelling to go down and avoid anything that may cause irritation. HOT SIDEWALKS When walking the dog in summer heat, it is important to be conscious of the temperature of the ground their paws are in direct contact with. Chances are if you could not walk on it barefoot than neither can your dog. Schedule walks for cooler times of the day or invest in paw wax. Booties are also an option if your dog can handle them. BBQS AND BLOCK PARTIES Everyone likes a good summer grill out, and while dogs like it, that doesn’t necessarily mean they should be allowed to enjoy it. Some common BBQ and cookout favorites may actually be harmful to your dog or cause a mess for you. Barbeque in particular is a common cause of diarrhea in dogs and corn on the cob is hard to digest. Discarded fruit pits are especially dangerous as they cause choking hazards. Be careful of stray bones and toothpicks as well as they can splinter or poke holes in a dog’s GI tract.
