PUBLISHER’S NOTE
In this Men’s Issue, we have incorporated features just for the men in our audience, including the best trends in menswear fashion and fun things to do for the summer season. How about being Han Solo… who wouldn’t want that? As we always like to give our readers something unexpected, try this: cut out the front cover on the “cutting line,” attach it to a rubber band, and wear the mask being Han Solo. Take a picture in your new look and email it to info@styletome.com for your chance to receive a special prize (while supply lasts and with monitored draw as supply is exceeded). Post your photo on your Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, and be sure to tag Orlando Style Magazine, to show everyone that you’ve got style!
DEAR READERS,
We are so thankful for all of our readers, and this month is our opportunity to thank all of the men out there! We are grateful for you helping make Orlando Style the premier lifestyle publication in the area, as well as for always turning to Orlando Style for your fashion and entertainment fix.
We are excited to present to you the highly anticipated Men’s Issue of Orlando Style, a great way to kick off the summer months with high fashion and the latest trends.
We hope you enjoy this Men’s Issue and the beginning of your summer, and we wish all of the dads out there a very Happy Father’s Day!
Even though the content of each and every issue is very much geared toward both men and women, this is certainly a special one for our large number of male readers. With Father’s Day coming up, this Men’s Issue is dedicated to the man of the household, who often goes without the credit he deserves. Today, there are quite a lot of responsible and dedicated men who take their job as husband, father, or boyfriend very seriously, and we want to commend them for their efforts.
Sincerely,
Sven J. Bode
This magazine is in honor of all those men who take pride in their work and family. In a world in which popular culture reflects men in a negative light, this Men’s Issue is for the good ones who are still out there, the men tirelessly working to improve the standards of their careers, their homes, and their relationships. These are the keepers, and ladies, you may not notice them right away, but after the first or second “bad boy,” you’ll find that these are the men with whom you can really build a great relationship.
Publisher P.S. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite personalities, doctors, lawyers, and other outstanding professionals in business with our “Online Voting Tool” at www.OrlandoStyleMagazine.com.
Women often tend to overlook those quiet ones, the men who admire you from afar, uncertain if they can approach you without rejection. Once you take the time to get to know them, it may be worth your while to give them a chance. These men may not be the center of attention, but they are usually the ones who make good family men and loyal fathers. We salute these dedicated men—the men eager to work hard to ‘make it’— in this magazine.

Happy halfway to New Years! Wait a minute -- did I really just write that? YIKES! It feels like we were just talking about Valentine’s Day and now it’s already June. The only thing moving faster than time in Orlando is the pace of events happening in our amazing city! Month after month, you’re guaranteed to find thrills and entertaining events throughout the City Beautiful and last month was no different. Check out some of our favorite highlights below, just in case you missed it!
On April 29th, famed daredevil Nik Wallenda made history by walking across the moving Orlando Eye without a harness or tether, his most dangerous and unique walk to date. The extraordinary feat kicked off the grand opening of the Orlando Eye attraction, which opened to the public on May 4th. The Orlando Eye’s 400 foot iconic observation wheel is the centerpiece of I-Drive 360, Orlando’s new metro-chic themed complex featuring a dynamic blend of attractions, restaurants, clubs and shops. Located in the heart of International Drive, the Orlando Eye is poised to become a top visitor attraction for the tourism capital of the U.S. The attraction showcases 360-degree views of Central Florida, including nearby theme parks and attractions, downtown Orlando and Kennedy Space Center, all within the comfort of 30 air-conditioned glass capsules. Each capsule has room for up to 15 guests to enjoy a serene 20-minute journey above our
scenic landscape. Sean and Catherine Lowe from ABC’s The Bachelor joined in on the grand opening fun by celebrating Catherine’s golden birthday at I-Drive 360. In addition to checking out the various attractions, the beloved couple enjoyed the first flight on the Orlando Eye and a birthday party complete with a Sugar Factory birthday cake. Joining the Orlando Eye as part of I-Drive 360’s unique line-up of attractions is the worldfamous Madame Tussauds. From A-list celebrities, music icons and sport legends to notable figures from history and pop culture, each figure at Madame Tussauds is truly a work of art. Teams of professional artists and sculptors spend months on extensive research to achieve the kind of astonishing realism that has been the core of the 250year Madame Tussauds legacy. Also a part of the I-Drive 360 entertainment and dining complex is SEA LIFE Orlando. The interactive underwater experience features more than 5,000 animals from the oceans of the world. At the one-of-a-kind aquarium, marine life enthusiast immerse themselves in the magical world beneath our oceans with interactive touch pools, bubble aquariums, floor-to-ceiling displays, and 360-degree and 180-degree ocean tunnels. The 25,000 square foot aquarium attraction is home to colorful fish, sharks, sea horses, stingrays, jellies, sea turtles and much more. The endless entertainment options at I-Drive 360 are truly phenomenal, but don’t just 16 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
take my word for it! Check out the brand new $200 million entertainment destination for yourself and find out what all the buzz is about. Body Art Showcase and Exhibit (BASE) Orlando is back and brought Central Florida a special glimpse inside the exciting world of body art, style and entertainment. On May 6th, over a dozen local body paint artists came together to showcase their unique work and channel their various inspirations. BASE guests experienced live body painting and watched talented artists transform models into living works of art right before their eyes. The unique opportunity to interact with the artists allowed guests to get up close and personal with live body art as it was happening. While awaiting the final reveal of the body paint masterpieces, attendees browsed artist vending tables, enjoyed food and bar specials and live entertainment from the area’s top burlesque acts, belly dancers and more. Photos were welcomed and encouraged as visitors interacted with the body painters and models, get in on the action and purchased body paint and other fun, personalized pieces from local artists. The evening of Wednesday, May 8th was one of luxury, fashion and exquisite style as VIP members of the Central Florida Community celebrated the renovations of one of the nation’s most respected designer brands.
CITY NEWS
Guests showed up to Chanel at the Mall at Millenia to celebrate the newly redesigned boutique with a private cocktail party of delicate hor d’oeuvres and fine beverages. Following the cocktail, Chanel hosted a private dinner for a select group, bringing the fabulous night of celebration to a close. Be sure to check out the all new, beautiful renovations for yourself and then join the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Brad Pitt, Keira Knightley and more by discovering the latest in fashion and accessories, eyewear, fragrance and beauty, fine jewelry and watches at Chanel Boutique. Also on May 8th, Grammy nominated multiplatinum producer, Ayo The Producer, brought a new meaning to the word “art” at CityArts Factory. That evening was the premiere of the ultimate networking and relationship building event for artists -- a “Pop Up Shop” installation called The Blend. Music painted art, paint projected sound and culture shifted in one boundless expansion of free energy as local fashion designers, artists, musicians and more came together for the highly anticipated event. Hundreds showed up to The Blend, which provided one continuous flow of entertainment spread thoughtfully across the CityArts Factory venue. Brought in part by Belaire Champagne and 104.5 The Beat, the main focus of this event was to capture the ambiance in the individual creative spaces of each room. Art curated by fashion stylist Desiry Witherspoon took over the “Belaire: Fashion Pop” room while attendees across the hall grasped how hip-hop and art are able to blend in beautiful, inspiring ways in the “Studio 18 Sound Stage” room curated by DJ MK and Brittany Elyse of WordKrush. In the Belaire Lounge, guests were able to mingle and network while sampling the exquisite tastes of Belaire Champagne, enjoying custom made cupcakes by Sweets By Holly and music provided by 5 live DJs. Cash and art supply donations received at the free event went to support ArtReach Orlando, an art outreach program that works with children in underserved areas of Orange County. The Orlando Fringe is the longest running Fringe Festival in the United States, currently celebrating 24 years as “Orlando’s most unique cultural experience.” From May 13th-25th, this signature event returned to Loch Haven Park for the annual 14-day arts festival. The mission of the Orlando Fringe is to provide an accessible, affordable outlet that draws diverse elements of the community together and inspires creative excellence through the arts. If you had the pleasure of attending the Orlando Fringe then you would agree with me when I say their mission was a huge success! The event was two wonderful weeks of nonstop appreciation and celebration for the theatrical and performing arts. The festival included theater, music, dance, art and encompassed roughly 500 uncensored
and non-juried performances, a lively outdoor stage, Visual Fringe and Kids Fringe. It’s no wonder the Orlando Fringe has now grown to be one of the largest in the US, winning numerous local and regional awards. As an added bonus for all, 100% of box office ticket sales went directly back to the artists and the Orlando Fringe participants. Pack your bags! On May 15th, seven lucky Central Floridians were whisked away to an exclusive luxury weekend in a surprise destination. The Luxe Suitcase Party took place at Trend Aviation’s private luxury hangar at Orlando International Airport. It was an evening full of elegance and anticipation. Each guest brought a packed suitcase to the event, walked the red carpet and enjoyed handmade cocktails and h’orderves from some of the best local restaurants. Live music by special guest performers provided dancing throughout the evening. Despite plenty of fabulous distractions and entertainment, guests were still at the edge of their seats wondering if they would be suddenly whisked away by private jet. At approximately 10:00 p.m., a 7-passenger private jet taxied to the side of the hangar and the evening’s main raffle drawing took place. Guests who didn’t win the trip still had a chance to win a weekend staycation getaway. A silent auction and additional raffle trips rounded off the night’s entertainment and left patrons no excuse to leave empty handed! Year after year, the Runway To Hope Spring Fashion Soirée never fails to bring an unforgettable evening of bravery and beauty to the city of Orlando. On May 16th, this beloved event returned to one of the country’s largest and most beautiful ballrooms at Rosen Shingle Creek, a proud corporate sponsor of the event. Co-founders Mark and Josie NeJame established Runway to Hope in 2010 and it has since grown to become an inspiring, truly signature fundraising event. The highlight of the evening is a special fashion show featuring more than 120 incredible and brave children, ages 2 to 18, all who are currently battling or have overcome cancer. The courageous children walk the runway arm in arm with one of the dozens of national and local celebrity escorts as they show off the powerful beauty of their unwavering spirits. Since it’s inception, the Spring Fashion Soiree has grown from 800 guests to over 1,900 in its fourth year and raised more than $800,000 in contributions, making it one of Central Florida’s largest and most anticipated events. This year’s celebrity host, Bill and Giuliana Rancic, emceed the night and led the audience in celebrating the strength and hope of these beautiful children. OUR TOWN
By Scott Kauffman
Our dad, who’s retired in Baltimore, goes by “Bird” so it’s only fitting he became an avid golfer seeing that he always scores a few birdies each round. I, on the other hand, would be thrilled just to live up to the nickname of “Bogey.” Varying skills levels notwithstanding, we all love the quality time golf represents in our family, especially now that my father’s battling health issues. So when I planned this year’s golf gettogether in Orlando I wanted to do something special for my dad. Something he’s truly never experienced. My brother and I decided to make him a “Member for the Day” at Bella Collina, one of America’s most luxurious private golf club communities, and pamper him like a private club prince. Our private plan would start with a challenging round of golf on Bella Collina’s Nick Faldo-designed championship layout; follow up with a rejuvenating Swedish massage in the club’s world-class spa and conclude the day with some tasty cuisine and a bottle of Super Tuscan in the private wine cellar and 19th Hole bar and grill. All in all, a fantastic sounding Father’s Day to say the least. Bella Collina proved to be the perfect place in more ways than one. For starters, the club’s located only 20 minutes from the heart of Orlando and just a few miles off the Florida Turnpike, making it an easy drive for
my brother driving up from Miami and our regular golf buddy arriving from Orlando. As for the Tuscan-inspired setting itself, let’s just say it was an “out-of-this world experience.” At least that’s one way to describe the picturesque drive to Bella Collina’s main gate as the club’s iconic 75,000-square-foot Italianate clubhouse sits high atop the rare rolling hills of south Lake County. Indeed, perched like a castle with Lake Apopka and 350-acre private spring-fed Lake Siena in the near distance, the breathtaking setting makes you feel as though you have truly stepped into one of Italy’s most scenic hillside regions. As we slowly made our way up winding cobblestone driveway to the clubhouse, past vineyards and tall slender Italian cypress trees, it was clear Bella Collina’s developer spared no expense with this low-density 1,900-acre development. Case in point is the award-winning $100 million clubhouse itself, lavishly appointed with dramatic barrel ceilings, intricate stonework custom crafted from imported Italian experts, and a labyrinth of eye-pleasing plazas, fountains, terraces and woodwork truly reminiscent of Old World architecture found in the heart of Tuscany. And to think we hadn’t even made it to the first tee yet! As it turned out, the par-72, 7,594yard golf course was equally as spectacular. Set amidst live oaks and more cypress trees 20 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
in the peaceful pristine setting of Montverde, the golf course befits the clubhouse with its elevated tees, wide fairways, rolling hills and variety of shots. The layout actually sprawls across the western edge of the development, rising to heights of more than 180 feet above sea level, incorporating lush forested valleys, dramatic dunes and sweeping vistas of Orlando’s downtown skyline in the horizon and Florida’s third-largest lake, 30,000-acre Lake Apopka that goes on for miles. As my golf buddy put it, the stunning views and beautiful setting were worth the $80 greens and cart fee alone. When Faldo and fellow golf course architect Steve Smyers collaborated on Bella Collina’s design, they utilized the property’s natural contours and hilly terrain to create a course that requires more than just skill or distance. In other words, creative shot-making and careful strategy will be generously rewarded. Bella Collina wasn’t the first time Faldo and Smyers teamed up on a golf course project. Prior to Bella Collina opening in 2008, the duo co-designed Chart Hills Golf Club, considered one of England’s best inland golf courses. The formula had worked so well Faldo, a six-time major champion, said it was a natural fit for the two well-known golfers to join forces at Bella Collina.
OUR TOWN
This is the time of year when families celebrate fathers all around America. In my family, one of our
annual traditions is organizing a fun-filled day of fatherly golf and men being men. And my favorite Father’s Day foursome always features my only brother, Junior, and our father.
“I wanted Steve on the job with me,” Faldo was quoted as saying prior to Bella Collina’s opening. “He is highly creative and energetic – one of the best in the industry. We both love the many dimensions of the links game, making players think their way around the course and hit all styles of ground shots as well as the air game.” Smyers, a former star golfer at the University of Florida and Central Florida resident, was thrilled to be teamed up with Faldo on the high-profile Bella Collina project. “I’ve known Nick since the early 1980s,” Smyers recalled. “and we were on the same page from the beginning, whether it was about the game of golf or course design. We get along because we’re cut from the same mold. Strategy, shotmaking and matching the contours of the land with the shot at hand and the wind. “Those are inherent in our designs. For instance, to create a different position for the golfer, we will put them in a fade lie and ask them to hit a right-to-left shot. Golfers will have to be able to study the lie, feel the wind, read the ground and imagine and be creative. That is how you play my golf courses, and Nick is in tune with that concept.” A memorable two-hole stretch that personifies Bella Collina’s unique character and the Faldo/Smyers design mission are Nos. 6 and
7. The par-4 sixth hole, a drivable 282 yards from the member tees (358 yards from the Faldo tips), is one of the classic risk-reward holes teasing most golfers like us to try and drive the hole for eagle. Others can safely use the split fairway to the left and wedge it in for birdie. My favorite hole is the following par-3 seventh. Playing 160 yards from the member tees (227 from the rarely played Faldo back tees), this uphill green is beautifully framed by waste areas to the front and left and bunkers to the right. After striking a well-played iron, the tiered green demands precision putting, something I learned the hard way en route to my three-putt bogey. After my father landed a soft hybrid shot to 10 feet, he lived up to his name and sunk his putt for the first birdie of the day. As a bonus, we all posed for a family photo from what has to be one of the most picturesque short par 3s in Florida. To be sure, on the back nine of Bella, after several more birdies from Dad and numerous three-putts from my brother and I, there more magnificent views of the clubhouse, lakes and surrounding hills to ease the pain of our lackluster performances. In the end, however, after walking off the course from a challenging round to say the least, we learned the true meaning behind “member for a day” as we pampered ourselves in the hot tub of 21 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
the men’s well-appointed locker room that rivals any four-star resort. After being further rejuvenated with our post-round massages, we sat in the tranquil courtyard and toasted our Tuscan Day of golf with a nice light Chianti. We topped off our afternoon with some scrumptious pasta, cold draft beers and billiards in the secluded room of the 19th hole, formerly set aside as the Men’s Room but now used for private parties. After selling more than $400 million in lots during the go-go real estate days 10 years ago, Bella Collina crashed hard during the recent recession and sat lifeless for years. Now, Bella Collina has been recapitalized and revitalized by a new ownership group and the private club community is buzzing with new construction from 3,000-squarefoot golf course villa homes to 5,000-squarefoot lakefront residences to 15,000-squarefoot grand estate. Once again, Bella Collina is the place to be. One of the popular sayings at Bella Collina as La Dolce Vita, or the “Good Life.” As I said goodbye to my father and brother as the sun set over Bella Collina’s scenic hills, I knew exactly what that meant. Indeed, family and Bella Collina, the Good Life.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII TO OPEN DECEMBER 18, 2015! With post-production underway and a confirmed release date of December 18, 2015, fans around the globe are eagerly awaiting the release of Lucasfilm’s highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII.

“Chewie, We’re Home.” “We’re very excited to share the official 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII, where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture,” said Alan Horn, chairman of The Walt Disney Studios in 2013, months before production began.
As if securing an award-winning director and notable writers and producers weren’t enough to ensure Episode VII’s success, legendary composer John Williams has composed the score for Star Wars: Episode VII. Shooting began in spring 2014 at Pinewood Studios in Heath, Buckinghamshire, England. True to the Original trilogy, whose first film, Star Wars: Episode IV, A New Hope debuted on May 25, 1977 in less than 30 theatres, Star Wars: Episode VII will return to practical effects, relying on models and puppeteering, but continuing to utilize digital special effects, merging “the best of both worlds” as Abrams puts it.
Although many die-hard “warsies” were infuriated after hearing of another Star Wars film (with nauseating images of Jar-Jar Binks and little Anakin Skywalker still haunting the beloved franchise), when word was confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII would be directed by J.J. Abrams (Super 8, Mission: Impossible III, Star Trek) and scripted by Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) fans everywhere began to see a light at the end of the tunnel.
The first official teaser trailer was released on November 28, 2014, restoring faith in the franchise. Buckle up, Orlando! Han and Chewie may be seasoned and a bit worse for the wear, but the dynamic duo is about to shake the big screen and the galaxy for the fourth time on December 18th!
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, along with J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk produced the film, with Tommy Harper (Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, Jack Ryan, Star Trek Into Darkness) and Jason McGatlin (The Adventures of Tintin, War of the Worlds) serving as executive producers.

The walls of the shoe salon have been rendered in a textured ivory finish, providing a dramatic contrast to a gleaming Goossens chandelier and sculptural console in concrete by the French artist Ingrid Donat. The boutique debuted with the Métiers d’art Paris-Salzburg Collection first shown in Austria and inspired by Karl Lagerfeld’s contemporary take on Tyrolean tradition and Mademoiselle Chanel’s stay in Austria, which led to the creation of the iconic CHANEL jacket. The collection is housed in two Readyto-Wear salons, and features a mix of exquisite pieces such as embroidered leather jackets, luxurious military-style tweed jackets, and feminine cashmere lace skirt suits. The first room is enriched with lacquered walls that recall the rich textural weave of tweed. The second Ready-to-Wear salon is completed with sculptural concrete Montano furniture and bespoke carpets. Chanel Métiers d’art Paris-Salzburg 2014-15

Level 8 Lounge
A TASTE OF THE SOUTH By Dana Damato stable. The interior features the original exposed stable beams giving the first class establishment a taste of the past. As much as I loved the inn and their cozy lobby lounge, there was a lot of the city to discover.
Florida State University. Seminoles.
College town. Capital of Florida. Those are just some, or all, of the things that came to mind whenever I thought about the city of Tallahassee. I’ve been a Florida native my whole life – 27 years. I’ve traveled all across the world; yet, I never found a reason to visit Tallahassee. “What is there to do in Tallahassee besides go to FSU or work for the government?” I thought. Finally, I made the trip and got to explore all this city has to offer, and needless to say, I was completely blown away.
I began my trip with a cocktail in the chic Level 8 Lounge, located in the Hotel Duval, and nearly devoured a delicious cheese plate paired with one of their specialty cocktails, an Old Fashioned. The best part of enjoying a few cocktails at Level 8 Lounge is the spectacular view overlooking downtown Tallahassee. Level 8 Lounge is a perfect spot to meet up with friends after work or to enjoy a drink in a casual and comfortable atmosphere. For me, it was a little “welcome to Tallahassee, ” treat before heading to The Front Porch for dinner.
Whether one is a foodie, single, has a family, in a relationship, etc., there’s something in Tallahassee for everyone to discover that will leave you wanting more. For me, I explored the culinary and entertainment side of Tallahassee, because who doesn’t adore a delicious meal and a good time? From the moment I pulled into my hotel, The Governors Inn, until the moment I left, I experienced an endless amount of exquisite food, refreshing cocktails and live entertainment. The Governors Inn is an elegant 41-room boutique hotel located in the heart of downtown Tallahassee - just one block from Florida’s Capitol Building. The Inn opened in 1983 in what was originally a livery

restaurant includes the ethnic Nefetari’s Fine Cuisine & Spirits, which offers unique and diverse menu items from around the world. Guests can enjoy their ethnic meals while being entertained by musicians and belly dancers, depending on the night. For a classy and sophisticated restaurant, perfect for a romantic date, Cypress Restaurant is the best in town serving classic southern dishes with a five-star twist. The next morning, I was still feeling full from The Front Porch meal; however, we were on our way to Backwoods Bistro, which is a popular restaurant in town – especially for breakfast. My breakfast experience at Backwoods Bistro can be described in two words – French toast. This wasn’t just any French toast though; this was a thick, soft and perfectly prepared meal with a side of fresh strawberries and whipped cream that was to die for. It was worth the guilt and definitely worth the calories. Another fantastic breakfast spot in Tallahassee includes the cute
and quaint Paisley Café that prepares their menu items to order. You can taste a whole lot of love in each and every meal. Paisley Café will feel like you’re at the owner’s house for breakfast, and she, herself, prepared a southern meal for you. You’ll never want to leave – believe me. Maybe you’re thinking about skipping breakfast and just heading straight to lunch. Some great lunch spots in Tally include Madison Social, (do NOT leave without ordering their Butcher Cut Bacon and The Madison Mule to wash it down). Madison Social is Tallahassee’s newest Social House that features lunch, dinner, happy hour, and late night experiences for all ages. On weekends, their six garage doors open up to expansive outdoor patio seating overlooking Doak Campbell Stadium. For seafood fans, head over to Shell Oyster Bar to indulge in the best oysters you can find in the panhandle area.

With all this eating, there has to be some way to burn it all off, and Tallahassee is the perfect city to explore with a large variety of walking activities. Just a short drive north is the charming town of Thomasville, Georgia. Downtown Thomasville is made up of shops, boutiques, restaurants and my personal favorite – Sweet Grass Dairy. If you’re a cheese fanatic, this will be your new favorite spot. Stop in after walking around the downtown area for a tasting of their fresh cheese from their very own farm. Looking for a historical activity? The Goodwood Museum and Gardens is a wonderful place to tour! Spend the day touring their 170 year old Main House or stroll through their scenic gardens. The estate began in the 1830s as a cotton and corn plantation that ultimately encompassed 2,400 acres. Another excellent walking activity is the Downtown Marketplace, which takes place on Saturday mornings and hosts’ vendors that sell local produce and goods with live music each week.

Capital City Amphitheater
Speaking of live music, Tallahassee is becoming a hot spot for live entertainment due to their fairly new Capital City Amphitheater. The Amphitheater at Cascades Park is the home to musical, theatrical and other community events. It features more than 1,500 permanent seats and a sloping landscaped area for more than 2,000 festival seats. Concert goers will enjoy an intimate music experience in a clean venue. Looking for more live music? Out in the country passed the city limit sign… is the Bradfordville Blues Club. When we say this music venue is out in the country… it really is! The Bradfordville Blues Club experience is like no other. It combines a truly unique location and atmosphere with the best the Blues has to offer. Hidden in a rural part of Tallahassee, the experience begins when you travel down the winding dirt roads and up the hill that lead to the Club. Don’t miss out on the bonfire area as well. The bonfire burns nightly under the large oaks and provides a romantic atmosphere. You can usually meet the artists as they too enjoy the rustic surroundings out by the fire or you can just sit back and relax during the set breaks. You’ll sing, you’ll dance, you’ll drink, and you’ll have the time of your life.

It’s a fact that men find women to be incredibly complicated. It’s also a fact that men know no bounds when it comes to pursuing the object of their affection. Unfortunately, this usually comes with a great deal of cheesy pick-up lines and cringe-worthy comments. So, just what exactly do women want? An article titled “Why the Pick-Up Scene Gets it Wrong” written by Chad Howse focuses on the “pick-up” or “dating” niche and how ineffective it is in regards to what women actually want. Chad believes these men address the issue of confidence with a backwards approach. By putting too much thought into their visual image rather than what’s coming out of their mouths, these men ultimately fall flat in their goal of successfully “wooing” a woman.
Pick-up strategies offer external tools but don’t transform the inner man. Clothes and rehearsed lines can give you confidence, but it’s a confidence that can be taken away. It’s external, and therefore fragile. Real confidence is not dependent on outward appearance.
Focusing on picking up women gives you a distorted view of value.
Chad argues that although communication and confidence is important, the approach that pick-up artists use turns men into dependents rather than increasing their strength and self-assurance. He proposes three reasons why the “dating niche” simply doesn’t work.
When you put all your focus on getting with women, you become dependent on the validation of women for your own self-worth. The more you stop craving attention from women, the more attractive you become to women.

Notches on your belt are not the same as having the right lady on your arm. While pick-up tactics may bring you short-term success, they don’t prepare you for a long-term relationship. You may know how to get a woman to come home with you, but do you know how to get her to stick around? Guess what, guys. Women agree with Chad. Pick-up lines and overconfidence are instant turn-offs to women. Men are visual, so they first and foremost fall in love with their eyes. Women, on the other hand, fall in love with all of their senses. We care about the whole package, and a big part of that is personality. Here are some valuable dating tips from the female perspective. Embrace the opportunity to gain insight into the mind of the woman and use this knowledge wisely.
Be direct and straightforward. You don’t need to waste time throwing out your best pick-up lines or acting casually disinterested. If she hasn’t walked away from you and isn’t rolling her eyes, chances are she’s somewhat interested. Get to the point and be direct. Let her know you’d like to get to know her better.
Don’t try too hard. Women like receiving compliments, but don’t overdo it. Compliment a (not inappropriate) body part, like her hair or eyes, and don’t dwell on it. You don’t need to tell her six times that she has the most beautiful smile in the world, even if it’s true. Compliment her, and then keep the conversation moving forward.
Confidence is attractive, arrogance is not. There’s a fine line between confidence and cockiness. It’s easy to want to sell yourself, but it’s not a job interview. She doesn’t care about your fancy job title, and it comes off as bragging. Take an interest in her, ask questions and pay attention to her answers.
Chivalry is not dead. She won’t think it’s lame or cheesy if you hold the door open or pull her chair out. Sadly, chivalrous gentlemen in the 21st century dating world are a dying breed, and it will help you stand out from the rest. Most importantly, be yourself. Dating and getting to know someone can be awkward. But if you come off as genuine and don’t put on a act, it will enable the other person to act like his or her true self, and you’ll be able to really get to know each other. Good luck!

All too often,
we hear about all the “bad boys” of Hollywood. The millionaires who couldn’t care less about the millions of fans who helped them get there. For many male celebs, their world revolves around booze, women, money, fame, more women and more money. From punching paparazzi to cheating on their ladies and so much more, any Hollywood gossip outlet will tell you how common these stories are. Just take a look at the latest TMZ headline on any given day. Rarely do we hear about all of the amazing things that many “good” celebrities are doing, but today that changes. In honor of the faithful husbands, the loving fathers and the charitable role models of Hollywood, here are 5 of our favorite celebrity nice guys.

CELEBRITY SOUP
If any celebrity has an excuse to be bitter and cynical, it’s Keanu Reeves. The Matrix actor has been through some pretty rough waters in his life. Reeves’ father abandoned his mother when Keanu was just 3 years old which led to a hard life of constant moving and living with new stepfathers. In 1999, Reeve’s girlfriend delivered their stillborn child and then died in a tragic car accident just 18 months later. As if that wasn’t enough trauma for one person to live through, Reeves’ sister has battled Leukemia for close to a decade and he has constantly supported her – both emotionally and financially – throughout it all. From paparazzi photos of Reeve’s hanging out with a homeless man to a viral YouTube video of him giving up his seat on a busy subway train. The stories of Reeve’s good nature are long and noteworthy, which is why we’ve named him our #5 Nice Guy of Hollywood.
NOTABLE NICE GUY STORY:
Keanu once helped a woman whose car had broken down on an LA highway. After several failed attempts at getting her car to start, Reeves called for the vehicle to be towed. He then voluntarily drove the woman all the way to her home, which was 50 miles in the opposite direction of where he was originally heading. Before leaving he also gave the woman his phone number for any additional help.
Coming in at #4 is one of Hollywood’s hunkiest nice men, Ryan Gosling. Not only can Gosling play a nice guy on the big screen, by all accounts he is also a genuine nice guy off-screen as well. He’s even involved in a new movie called The Nice Guys! Coincidence? I think not! As with many celebrities on our list, not much is known about Gosling’s private life because, well, he keeps it that way. In spite of his privacy, you can’t argue with Gosling’s long resume of good deeds. The Notebook star supports several charities and is credited with not
just one, but two acts of heroism. Last month Gosling made headlines again after posting a touching tribute to the creator of the “Ryan Gosling won’t eat his cereal” meme, Ryan McHenry, who died of bone cancer at just 27 years old. Gosling posted a Vine of himself eating cereal in honor of McHenry and wrote a tweet saying, “My heart goes out to all of Ryan McHenry’s family and friends. Feel very lucky to have been a part of his life in some small way.”
NOTABLE NICE GUY STORY:
Gosling once took the time to break up a fight in New York City before it got too out of hand. In a now famous YouTube clip, Gosling walks towards the altercation, drops his grocery bags and physically restrains one of the men in the fight. He then takes the pair away from traffic at the intersection and attempts to help the two resolve their conflict.

Hugh Jackman is not only one of Hollywood’s sweetest celebrities, he’s also the model family man, which is why he takes the #3 spot in our countdown. Jackman married his wife of 15 years, Deborra-Lee Furness, in 1996 on the set of one of his first acting roles. After his wife (who is also 13 years his senior) suffered two miscarriages, they decided to adopt two children instead. Countless paparazzi shots of Jackman and his family are a testament to how much he enjoys spending time with his children and wife. In one interview Jackman passionately spoke of Furness saying, “She’s the greatest. I’m one of the lucky ones. She’s very wise, a great actress, and a great wife and mother...I’m really proud of her.” On and off camera, Jackman is regarded as one of the most pleasant and engaging actors to work with. He is impeccably polite, undeniably charming and always makes time for his adoring fans.
NOTABLE NICE GUY STORY:
A woman was up bright and early trying to set up her tent at a NY Farmer’s Market when Jackman noticed her struggling against the wind and offered to help. The independent woman declined the help, but the chivalrous Aussie insisted and only then did she realize who he was. He spent a good part of the morning continuing to help the woman by carrying her things from her car and even posed for a photo before heading on his way.
CELEBRITY SOUP
Admit it. Nobody hates Matt Damon. Named “Hollywood’s Sexiest Mr. Nice Guy” by Elle Magazine, he is #2 on our list because he is the celebrity leading the most normal life on our countdown. In 2003, Matt went against the Hollywood norm by starting a relationship with Luciana Barroso, a Miami bartender he met while filming Stuck On You. The two of them started dating immediately and were married two years later at a low-key, no frills ceremony in a New York courthouse. Damon speaks of his wife often saying, “I got lucky, I fell in love with a civilian.” The pair has three kids together and Damon also adopted Barroso’s daughter from a previous marriage. Despite daddy’s fame, however, if you’re like me then you probably don’t even know the names of Damon’s children. Unlike Kim and Kanye or Tom and Katie, there are no celebrity kids in this family. Whereas other celebrities complain about the spotlight and then proceed to flood social media with pics of their little ones, I had to turn to Google to find out what Damon’s kids even looked like. This family man who has somehow found a way to maintain anonymity in the midst of his high profile career is rightly named #2 on our Nice Guys of Hollywood countdown.
NOTABLE NICE GUY STORY:
Matt Damon has a big heart for teachers! In 2011, Damon attended the Save Our Schools rally in Washington with his mother, a teacher. During an interview with Reason TV, Damon stood up to a reporter who implied that teachers should be driven by the same job insecurity that drives him and other actors to work so hard. Needless to say, the offended actor had some “choice” words to say to the reporter, but numerous people have since praised Damon for defending the teaching profession and so passionately standing up for education.
Tom Hanks is the beloved Hollywood actor coming in at #1 on our list. He has been immersed in the world of Hollywood for decades, but has yet to succumb to the pressures that have turned so many of his counterparts into grumpy, expletives-shouting men. His nice guy persona precedes him, but if there’s one actor that both fans and the film industry can say is the real deal, it’s Tom Hanks. The Cast Away star has been named the easiest celebrity to work with numerous times by various Hollywood directors and actors. From his legendary roles to his engaging and entertaining personality, Hollywood doesn’t get much better than Hanks! As is typical with all the nice guys on our list, Hank’s also donates to a variety of different charities. He has been faithfully married to his wife Rita Wilson since 1988 and on Veterans Day in 1999, he received the Distinguished Public Service Award (the US Navy’s highest civilian honor) for his work in Saving Private Ryan. What a class act!
NOTABLE NICE GUY STORY:
In 2013, Hanks met one of his biggest fans, Sarah Moretti. The young woman, who has autism, had spent years collecting pictures and news-cuttings related to Hanks and putting them together in a scrapbook. In a YouTube video Hanks is seen meeting the super-fan backstage at his Broadway show Lucky Guy. Not only does he take the time to go through the book, but he also appears to be genuinely thrilled by the encounter saying, “Sweetie, how wonderful it is to meet you” and “Sarah, this is so great. You know, my mum doesn’t have something like this.” 46 STYLETOME.COM

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
THE ROLLING STONES By Courtney Caggiano
After a long 18 years, The Rolling Stones are once again returning to Orlando as they take their iconic sound across the nation with their 15-city North American Zip Code Tour. On Friday, June 12, the record-breaking band will make their stop at the Citrus Bowl, bringing back the classic rock and roll vibes that defined a generation.
48 STYLETOME.COM
DON’T MISS THE BEAT
For fans who lived through The Rolling Stones’ mid century reign, or for those who have developed an appreciation for roots-based rock, this tour is an incredible opportunity to celebrate one of the world’s most infamous bands. For one night only, hits like “Tumbling Dice,” “Satisfaction,” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” will shake the stadium of the Citrus Bowl. The band’s set is loaded with hits from the past, as well as lesserknown selections from their catalog that have proven to be favorites over time.
become a groundbreaking representation of pop culture as well as a multi-generational favorite. According to drummer Charlie Watts, the innovative sound of the album comes not from the band’s shift in artistic direction, but rather Mick Jagger’s desire to play guitar, taking on some of Keith Richards’ responsibilities. The band has admitted that Jagger’s strange guitar technique, which involves playing on the upbeat, a style unique to Brazilian guitarists, was the key factor to defining songs on the Sticky Fingers album.
The Rolling Stones have not played U.S. Stadiums since 2007, and this tour is full of new sights and sounds, making the Zip Code shows unlike those of any other Rolling Stones tour. With a stage designed to extend deep into the audience, fans will get the chance to have an up-close and personal concert experience, and cutting-edge video screens and special effects promise a high energy night of rock and roll that is not to be missed. The name of the Zip Code Tour is a reference to the zippered-jeans cover art from band’s classic 1971 album, Sticky Fingers. Recently reissued as a deluxe album, Sticky Fingers coincides with the Stones’ 2015 tour, making the album’s hits some of the shining stars of the live set. Show favorites like “Brown Sugar,” “Dead Flowers,” and, of course, “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,” become new again in the CD reissues and exclusive box sets. The album release also includes five tracks that the band recorded live at London’s Roundhouse in 1971, featuring “Honky Tonk Women” and “Midnight Rambler.” Sticky Fingers, one of the most well known Stones albums of all time, is iconic for reasons well beyond the classic hit singles. The cover artwork, designed by Andy Warhol, has
In retrospect, one can see that, to a certain extent, The Rolling Stones taught Americans their own music. After coming to the United States in the mid-1960s, the band popularized blues-rooted rock and roll, which brought the blues back to the surface of modern American music. Even on their 1972 album, Exile on Main St., The Rolling Stones resurrected the Delta blues number, “Stop Breaking Down,” giving it new life with an energized rhythm and heavy chorus line. This song, recorded by American blues legend Robert Johnson in 1937, was relatively underground in the music scene until the Stones brought it back to the American people. Orlando is fortunate enough to have the band bring this blues-inspired rock and roll back across the Atlantic once again. While it may seem as though the Zip Code Tour is a celebration of the legacy that The Rolling Stones’ career has become, legacy is a word that is often associated with a cultural icon of the past, and The Rolling Stones are certainly not leaving any time soon. Rather, this concert is a live show featuring musicians that play just as hard as they did when they began.
Looking back on this album today, one can see how far The Rolling Stones have come over the decades, but it is nearly impossible to imagine how far they have come since playing nameless clubs outside of London in the early 1960s. Known as “The Blue Boys,” childhood friends and classmates Keith Richards and Mick Jagger formed a humble garage band, yearning to discover the secrets of American blues artists. The young band’s repertoire focused on the tunes of bluesmen such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, and Bo Diddley. This American blues music, a rarity in England, was quite inspiring coming from a group of British musicians.
Be sure to attend this once-in-a-lifetime rock and roll experience at the Citrus Bowl. The Rolling Stones will continue their Zip Code Tour throughout the United States before bidding farewell once again on July 15th in Quebec, Canada. RUINING YOUR SLEEP? The Scoop on Blue Light By Kourtney Destefano
You shut your lights off around the house as bedtime approaches,
The Study
however, the light from your smartphone, tablet and computer often stay on. It is one of the lights emitting from your electronic device, which is a blue light, that causes a problem. If you have trouble sleeping and are a frequent user of electronics, listen up. A Harvard study found that blue light, the wavelength common in smartphones and tablets, disrupts the internal body clock, hindering sleep.
An overwhelming amount of studies found that working the night shift, meaning exposure to light at night, was linked to diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Exposure to light decreases the secretion of melatonin, a hormone that influences circadian rhythms. The Harvard study linked blue light to diabetes and obesity. The researchers put 10 people on a schedule that gradually changed the time of their circadian rhythms. Their blood sugar levels were found to have increased, putting them in a pre-diabetic state. Their levels of leptin, a hormone that makes you feel full after a meal, also went down. Even dim light was found to have an impact on our circadian rhythms. Stephen Lockley, a Harvard sleep researcher, says that just eight “lux,” a level of brightness exceeded by most table lamps, has a powerful effect. Light at night is a main reason people don’t get enough sleep, Lockley says, and researchers have linked limited sleep to increased risks for depression and diabetes.
The Science Behind It Our bodies are kept in sync with the rhythm of the day and night by our internal body clock. The body clock, called the circadian rhythm, uses light to tell time and all different types of light affect the body differently. During the night, light throws the circadian rhythm out of whack, causing sleep to suffer. Although blue wavelengths are beneficial during the day, increasing attention and mood, they have been found to be the most harmful and disruptive at night. 54

“Although blue wavelengths are beneficial during the day, increasing attention and mood, they have been found to be the most harmful and disruptive at night.”
Blue Light Potency Although any light can decrease melatonin, blue light is significantly more powerful. The Harvard study compared the effects of 6.5 hours of blue light exposure to a comparable brightness found in green light. The discovery? Blue light decreased melatonin for about twice as long as the green light, shifting circadian rhythms by twice as much. A study by the University of Toronto compared the melatonin levels of those exposed to bright indoor light wearing blue light blocking goggles to people exposed to regular dim light without goggles. They found that the levels of melatonin were about the same,
proving that blue light is a strong suppressor of melatonin. What To Do So how can you combat this powerful blue light and get back your much-needed full night of sleep? • Avoid looking at bright screens about two to three hours before bedtime. • Expose yourself to lots of blue light during the day. This will boost your ability to sleep at night, and heightens your alertness and mood at daytime. 55 STYLETOME.COM
• Use dim red lights for night lights, as red light has the least effect on your circadian rhythm. • If you’re a night owl or work a night shift, considering purchasing a pair of blueblocking glasses. • Turn off your electronic device and allow yourself a good night’s sleep!

Among the offering are mail order aligners to straighten your teeth. An impression kit is sent to the consumer who then uses it to make a mold of the upper and lower teeth. From these molds a series of aligners are made to gradually straighten the teeth. The cost associated with this is lower than seeing a dental professional. The concerns with this “treatment” is that the consumer has not been examined by a dental professional to determine if the gums and surrounding bone ad tissues are healthy. Movement of teeth in patients who have gum disease can make the situation worse causing damage. Tooth movement is gradual allowing the gum and bone to remodel around the new tooth positions. Patients who are not seeing a dental professional for regular check ups are more likely to be harmed. Another “quick fix” is where rubber bands are promoted to close a gap between teeth. There are numerous You Tube videos showing this technique. These rubber band can slip down under the gum and if not removed can cause damage to the tooth, gum and surrounding bone. There are numerous documented cases where this has resulted in permanent tooth loss. Aligning jaws, straightening teeth and correcting bite should begin with an examination by an orthodontist. Throughout orthodontic treatment, and through regularly scheduled appointments, orthodontists assess the movement of teeth, bone and soft tissue and make the necessary adjustments to advance the process. IN THE KNOW
Police Brutality
By Mark NeJame
Contributor Vanessa Louise Braeley
The militarization of America
Mark NeJame
is much more than a mere sentiment at this point. Between the Baltimore Riots, Ferguson and everything in between, U.S. citizens are convinced we are becoming a police state. The obvious cause for concern is police brutality is race-related, and while this is readily apparent, perhaps there is a less conspicuous undercurrent of gender-related aggression. One should wonder, would there be less violence if we had more women police officers? While it’s understood that most believe some things are just best left to a man, that line of thinking tends to be antiquated and focused on the physical capabilities of man versus woman. Exploring the biological differences
62 STYLETOME.COM
between genders and the way that they communicate and deal with conflict leads to some interesting results. In studies conducted on whether women conduct police tasks differently: • High speed chases which occurred during a period of 12 months were conducted by 66% men and 44% women; • In those high speed pursuits that were instigated by the police officer, only 9% of the high speed chases were instigated by female police officers; • Citizen complaints of police misconduct are largely about
IN THE KNOW
male police officers, particularly in areas of assault or excessive force; • Women tend to be more rational and are skilled at “verbal judo. We can take care of it without having to go hands-on.” The National Center for Women and Policing contends “Twenty years of exhaustive research demonstrates that women police officers utilize a style of policing that relies less on physical force, and more on communication skills that defuse potentially violent situations. Women police officers are therefore much less likely to be involved in occurrences of police brutality…” So what gives? Is it testosterone? Ego? Camaraderie amongst men? Perhaps. Biological differences between genders are generally responsible for why men and women react different in stressful situations. The current police brutality crisis has also been brought to light by access to technology. Smartphones are the best witnesses, after
all. A video or photograph captures these violent transgressors in real time and on prime time, whereas before they operated in the shadows. Mitigating excessive force by law enforcement will no doubt rely on newly implemented tech gadgets such as body cameras. Still, a “woman’s touch” may be the balance needed in order to diffuse potentially physically aggressive encounters before they get, well, physical. It can be safely assumed that men will continue to dominate the police force, and we need every single one of them. But as police forces sweep the nation equipped with surplus military gear such as machine guns and hand grenades, we must not forget to protect our civil liberties and explore all options of reforming police practices. Body cameras, communication training and the recruitment of female police officers is certainly a good place to start.

ORLANDO’S NO. 1 READER’S CHOICE Dental Practice Special Promotional Feature
ALL ABOUT BEAUTIFUL SMILES area. During the last one, we saw 133 patients. We made it more than just a trip to the dentist. We made it an occasion. Local restaurants and businesses donated food, water, and drinks. I wanted to create not only a day where people who could not afford a dentist could get great care, but also a day that inspired them to go out and do something for their community.
Creating the All About Beautiful Smiles Experience: I chose our tag line, “a delightful dental experience,” because it’s audacious and it holds us accountable to patients who are anxious about seeing a dentist. From that first phone call until you walk out our door following your anxiety-free appointment, we’re going to make sure you have a beautiful smile, inside and out.
My Passions: I train for triathlons with my husband, Dr Banji Awosika who is a nephrologist with a focus on wellness. I’m a foodie who loves going to farmers’ markets with our three children. My faith in Jesus Christ is central to my life.
FORE Minutes in My Office: We have a four-minute rule. That’s FORE! Before we do anything, we listen. We talk to patients about their Family, their Occupation, their Recreation passions and then Everything else. We want to know your granddaughter’s name. We want to know about your child’s soccer team. We care about the whole you. As one patient told me, “You make me feel as if I’m coming to visit family every time. “
The Power of Wow: I’ve learned from Disney, Zappos, Apple, Four Seasons, and other companies the power of core values for my practice. We deliver “wow” through service. We do common things uncommonly so we can achieve great clinical outcomes. I get such joy and fulfillment when patients say: “I can’t believe this is a dental office.” Recently, I completed a bridge of nine implants for a 79-year-old patient, who started to cry tears of joy during our last session. I realized this is why I am a dentist. This is why I invest my time, my heart, and my faith in creating beautiful smiles that go soul deep.
A Lifelong Learner: I knew as a young child that I wanted to be a dentist, but not just any dentist. I wanted to practice at the highest level. So I left my homeland in Lagos, Nigeria to move to the United States and study at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania. Excellence is not an accident. I work at it, continuing my education every year, learning and mastering the art and science of sedation dentistry, implant dentistry, and cosmetic dentistry from the best in the world. Most recently, I earned a mastership from the International Congress of Oral Implantology, something only five percent of dentists worldwide receive.

Blending the easy pace of life associated with “old Florida” and world class amenities, Hammock Dunes Club provides a way of living desirable for those who are seeking to slow life down and relax a bit. At the center of the Hammock Dunes Community is Hammock Dunes Club, a “Distinguished Emerald Club of the World” chosen by Boardroom Magazine as one of the finest facilities in America for member experience. One Clubhouse located yards away from the Atlantic Ocean, boasting panoramic views and a second, smaller “low country” style facility built on a private preserve of pines and oak hammocks constitute the place to meet and share dining and social experiences with the warm and friendly members of the Club. Each Clubhouse features a world class golf course, one designed by Tom Fazio (The links) and the other by Rees Jones (The Creek). The Links Course meanders through the Hammock Dunes Community featuring home lined fairways and two oceanfront green complexes. The Creek Course is built on a 695 acre preserve, abundant with wildlife and incredible natural beauty. Each course offers its own unique features to challenge and inspire players and are immaculately maintained by our staff. Beyond golf, Hammock Dunes Club offers its members a variety of social and dining alternatives with interest groups and activities like bocce, croquet (oceanfront courts), tennis, swimming and a boutique fitness center. Add to that the many groups of card players, mahjongg, opera, photography, cycling... and much more. No one is a stranger for long at Hammock Dunes Club if they wish to share great times with those friends you “just haven’t gotten around to meeting yet.” It all starts by becoming a member of a truly special place.

Artist Albin Polasek, head of the Sculpture Department at the Arts Institute of Chicago for thirty years, built this home, chapel, and gallery in 1949 along the shores of picturesque Lake Osceola as his own retirement villa. In the 1960s, Polasek opened it all to the public to share his life-long love for the arts.
This year we are excited to open Winter Park’s historic CapenShowalter House to the public. A community team moved the house across the lake in 2013 to save it. Built in 1885, this gracious Southern home combines the beauty of Old Florida with the splendor of the 1920s, when the Showalter Family expanded the house. We restored the original wood floors and updated everything to make our guests feel at home for all-new events and as a place to create your own special moments.
Our outdoor sculpture garden is the largest in Central Florida, featuring serene women with their children, playful mythical figures, religious icons, and classic figural carvings. Our guests can explore his home and studio, participate in a workshop, or gather together on our expansive lawn after enjoying one of the curated exhibits from visiting artists.

CHEF JAKE BRENCHLEY Boca Kitchen, Bar & Market has a new chef and they want to show him off! By Riesa Pascal
Chef Jake Brenchley
If you login
to Boca Kitchen, Bar & Market’s website, you’ll see the words above proudly displayed on their front page. If you go to Boca Kitchen in person, you’ll soon come to realize just how true that tagline is. Part of guaranteeing a positive experience for guests in any dining establishment is ensuring the kitchen and staff is left in the care of only the best, most capable hands. For Boca Kitchen, those hands belong to their acclaimed, brand new Executive Chef Jake Brenchley. Chef Jake is now leading all culinary efforts at Park Avenue’s popular farm-to-fork restaurant. A French-trained chef who prepared the 2015 New Year’s Eve dinner for the James Beard Foundation, Chef Jake joins Boca after a successful run with the Kessler Collection. At Boca, he is incorporating a new take on classic dishes and working directly with local farmers and vendors to create fresh dishes that spotlight seasonal ingredients. In
addition, Chef Jake will also debut all new locally-sourced menu items including a pork tenderloin entrée created around Zellwood Farms corn. “We run so many daily specials that we really get a sense of what people like to eat and what people don’t like to eat. Everything that’s on our menu has been carefully thought out and run as a special. Guest feedback is so important. The good thing is we’ve taken everything that our guests have told us and put it on that menu.” - Chef Jake While some chefs make their guests feel forced to eat the items they feel is best, that is far from the case at Boca. For Chef Jake, the guest is the only one who knows what they like so he takes all his cues from them. Unlike your typical chef-driven kitchen, Boca’s kitchen is designed with the customer in mind. Chef Jake takes great pride in a customer, farm 84 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
driven menu and just like their motto, he never fails to put seasonal, fresh ingredients to use on that menu. You’ll be hard pressed to find another Executive Chef in Winter Park who makes personal runs to the Plant City Farmer’s Market twice a week. “I want you to be able to eat a carrot that was in the ground two days ago and I want you to be able to have fish that’s sustainable, that’s helping the environment.” - Chef Jake On Easter Sunday, Chef Jake unveiled Boca’s new brunch menu. The menu was designed to feature innovative breakfast items prepared with the freshest available ingredients. Highlighting the menu are five new versions of Chef Jake’s signature eggs Benedict, which all feature a signature hollandaise sauce and local Lake Meadows brown eggs cooked sous vide. These mouth-watering selections include:

Dr. Philip Meinhardt and the Ethiopia Project By Maria Delis

STYLEMD
“I fell in love with the Ethiopian people,
Pearson, one of Meinhardt’s instructors, spoke of his volunteer work at MCM subsequently inspiring Meinhardt.
As soon as the plane’s wheels hit the ground in Addis Ababa, Meinhardt is ready to head over to Myunsung Christian Medical Center (MCM). They are preparing his first patient in the operating room.
The project’s “goal is to revolutionize the delivery of orthopedic care in Ethiopia,” writes Pearson in his Ethiopia Project blog. Non-profit organizations, such as Conscious International, have helped raise funds for needed equipment and implants. Despite the generous help, Meinhardt and Pearson have had to provide supplies and equipment to the hospital as well.
[with their] sweet culture,” Dr. Philip Meinhardt told me.
“We have already reviewed x-rays and MRIs,” Meinhardt said. Dr. Rick Hodes, a renowned internal medicine physician, arranges patients prior to the surgeon’s arrival to avoid delays. The teaching hospital, built by a Korean Presbyterian church, is located in the eastern part of the city, ten minutes from Bole International Airport. According to the Institute for International Medicine, MCC “arose from an appeal by the Ethiopian government to provide advanced medical care.” Open since 2004, the modern facility has 161 beds and five operating rooms. “I usually stay in Addis Ababa for two-three weeks,” Meinhardt said. “I use all of my vacation time.” Ethiopia is a landlocked East African nation with approximately 78 million people living in its massive land. It is one of the most populated countries in the continent, and it has been trying to rebuild from famines, droughts, and border wars. Unfortunately, it suffers from a shortage of doctors and nurses too. “It’s called ‘Brain Drain,’” Meinhardt said. It’s a major issue in third world nations. Many young doctors choose to leave their countries and practice abroad for a better quality of life. This phenomenon leaves millions of people without access to proper care. In Ethiopia, life-threatening, debilitating diseases are not diagnosed early enough. Dedicated healthcare professionals from around the world not only help give patients a better life, they also train local doctors and medical residents. Meinhardt is originally from the Bradenton/ Sarasota area. After earning his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine, he matched at Orlando Regional Healthcare System’s Orthopedic Residency program, where he met Dr. Donald Pearson, now a retired surgeon.
“Modern orthopedic care depends on equipment and implants to provide good surgical outcomes,” writes Pearson. The combined effort from organizations, donors, and medical volunteers helps save patients that would otherwise succumb to their disease. After residency, Meinhardt completed a spine surgery fellowship in North Carolina. The board certified surgeon, who joined Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic in 2010, has now been to Ethiopia six times. He plans to go back later this summer or next spring, he told me. When he is there he operates at MCM, although he has also operated at Tikur Anbessa (Black Lion) Hospital in Addis Ababa. This is the other teaching hospital in Ethiopia. Many international residents write about Black Lion’s condition. Mold and lack of hot water put everyone’s health at risk. Meinhardt remembers having to operate with the windows open and fans cooling the room. Sometimes, patients come to MCM with conditions that have to be treated back in the States. During one of his first trips to Ethiopia, Meinhardt was presented with a massive tumor case in a twenty-year old. It was a giant cell tumor in the young man’s shoulder. It had destroyed the bone. Meinhardt made arrangements for the patient to come to the U.S. and stay with him and his family during the treatment. Meinhardt performed a major resection and then a reconstruction. 87 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
For how long does he see himself volunteering at MCM? “This is an ongoing project,” he told me. As soon as his children are old enough, Meinhardt is planning to take his family with him on the Addis Ababa trips. Back home in Orlando, Meinhardt provides treatment for injuries and diseases of the back and spine at Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic. Dr. Eugene L. Jewett, an internationally recognized orthopedic pioneer and inventor, founded the practice in 1936. His Jewett Orthopedic Hip Nail and the Jewett Hyperextension Back Brace revolutionized fracture treatment in the 1930s and 1940s. Today, the Jewett practice has individual specialists focusing on spinal services, sports medicine, hand rehabilitation, joint replacement, foot and ankle treatment, and electrodiagnosis. Meinhardt practices in the Winter Park, East Orlando, Downtown, and Sandlake offices, offering the latest advanced treatments for his patients. For example, spine surgeons can now use a computer and patient x-rays to navigate accurately through the spine. This technology greatly helps in tumor removal procedures and for the surgeon to precisely place spinal instrumentation. Another advancement in orthopedic surgery is the artificial disc replacement procedure. This not only improves pain and function, but it also maintains some motion at the disc space. The conventional “fusion” technique actually solidly fuses that space. In Winter Park and in Lake Mary emergency patients can visit the Jewett Orthopaedic walk-in clinics. Jewett Orthopaedic is one of the first groups to establish this type of clinic in the country. Their first convenient care clinic opened in Winter Park in 2006. “The convenient care clinic allows for our patients to get quick resolve to the issue with proper care. No wait, and a significant cost savings in comparison to the emergency room,” stated Charles M. May, CEO. For more information on Jewett Orthopaedic Clinic please visit www.jewettortho.com
PEOPLE
Who is Scotty B?
Well that depends on who you ask and even more so on what your need is. If that need is something related to the entertainment industry, chances are this successful serial entrepreneur has got you covered. Let’s take a look at all the many things that make up Scotty B.
FIRED UP! ENTERTAINMENT “Fired Up! Entertainment is based around anything that involves a brand, product or service that someone wants to promote in a live capacity and could use interactive performers to carry out that message to prospective clients or customers.” - Scotty B. In order to carry out those unique messages, Fired Up! Entertainment has been utilizing atmospheric performers such as stilt walkers, face painters, personalities, brand ambassadors and more for over 14 years. Although the company is based right here in Orlando, Fired Up! Entertainment has worked across the country, facilitated multiple NBA All Star events and completed tours with numerous sports organizations such as NASCAR and NHRA.
EMCEE “The most exquisite part of my job as an emcee is watching the crowd respond when I’ve said something that they connect with. Whether it be something funny or something that is obviously true—that’s what I love.” - Scotty B.
SCOTTY
B By Riesa Pascal
.
Scotty B.’s career as an emcee has led him to work with everyone from Turner Entertainment to the NCAA’s Final Four event and more. If you’re a basketball fan then you may even recognize Scotty B. from his job as a game day emcee for our very own Orlando Magic. Scotty B.’s high energy and enthusiasm allows him to connect with his audience in ways that so many in the industry have yet to master.
DJ “I’m not your stereotypical type of DJ that just blends music. I think of myself as a performance DJ because I am putting on a show the entire time.” - Scotty B. Although most of Scotty B.’s fans knew him as an emcee before they knew him as a DJ, Scotty B. is quick to tell you that DJing was his first love. As a teenager, that love would lead him to lock himself in his room for hours to play music on vinyl records. As an adult, that same passion led Scotty B. to co-create Project: DJ Slam! The performance group, co-produced by T. Skorman Productions, consist of Scotty B. DJing with two drummers and a multitude of live musicians. The beauty of the show is that it contains all the aspects of a live band 88 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
with the playlist of a DJ. Although the show was originally designed for corporate clientele, the group has since begun transitioning and expanding into concert openers, specialty performances at public events and more. Scotty B.’s ultimate dream for Project: DJ Slam! is to open up for national headlining acts or in a venue that is consistent. At the rate he is going… I’d say that’s only a matter of time!
MARTIAL ARTIST “All throughout this time, whether I’ve been emceeing and DJing or facilitating promotions, the main thread of all of it has been my martial arts background.” Having grown up with a fascination for martial arts films, Scotty B. was quick to jump on an opportunity to train in Ninjutsu with Tampabased Mark Russo, a student of the legendary Stephen K. Hayes. Although he had only got a taste of the physical aspect of martial arts, from that moment Scotty B. was 100% hooked as the positive demeanor, attitude and personality of Russo led him to explore the art form further. For over 25 years, he commuted to Tampa several times a week for training with Russo who soon became a father figure to him. This love for martial arts has since driven Scotty B. to open his own To-Shin Do school in Orlando which offers a free introductory program to anyone who’s interested in taking classes. As Scotty B. will tell you, all the decisions he makes in his career are based on the core principles he’s learned throughout martial arts. Those principles include treat yourself right, treat others a little better and figure out how everybody can win and not just how you can get ahead of everybody else. Having done everything from pureness and a kind heart, it’s no wonder Scotty B. has been so successful in continuing to better himself, grow his companies and pursue his dreams. BODY CAMS FOR POLICE OFFICERS - BY MARK L. HORWITZ
Over the past several months the news has frequently highlighted acts of police misconduct, as well as police officers being attacked and killed. It cannot be disputed that the vast majority of police officers are diligent, hard-working public servants who seek to protect and serve. There are few, however, that go too far and commit the sort of acts which have resulted in public outcry. Police misconduct has been revealed by bystanders recording the use of excessive force. Many have called for a mandatory requirement that all police officers wear body cams to record their actions and conduct with the public.
Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine St. Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407.843.7733 F: 407.849.1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhorwitzlaw.com
JET SKI
The accuracy of a visual recording of a confrontation is affected by several factors including the angle of the camera, lighting conditions and whether the recording captures the entire event. When considering whether the action of a police officer is justified or amounts to excessive force, it is necessary to observe the situation as seen by the officer. Examples of this have been shown on local TV news. A camera which is behind or at an angle to the officer may see an officer pull a gun or take some other violent action even though the camera angle does not reveal that the officer has just seen the person in front of him draw a gun or pull a knife. Likewise, a bystander who visually records an incident already in progress may not capture aggressive action by a person resisting arrest or by a police officer instigating an incident.
There can be no doubt that a police officer might be thrust into a stressful and dangerous situation at any time. Likewise, a citizen may be confronted by a police officer who is acting unreasonably or aggressively for no reason. In either case, if the public and the police know the officer is wearing a body cam, there is a strong likelihood that all concerned will act reasonably. Studies have shown that police officers wearing body cams have a positive effect not only on the police, but also the public. Body cams can also protect police officers from false accusations of excessive force. While a visual recording taken from the officer’s perspective may not reveal all of the action, it will present strong evidence to be considered by those who must judge the conduct later and will foster proper behavior between police and citizens. The benefit of police wearing body cams far outweighs the financial expense of purchasing and operating the body cams. It is time to recognize the importance of police body cams and for government and police departments to fund the costs involved in providing each police officer a body cam and necessary equipment to preserve the recordings. It is also time for the federal government to assist local governments in bearing the costs of providing each police officer with a body cam.

OUT & ABOUT
The 17th season of the reality television show ‘The Bachelor,’ couple Sean and Catherine Lowe, who have been happily married for a little over a year now recently celebrated Catherine’s 29th birthday at the soft opening of ‘The Official Orlando Eye’ on April 29, 2015 along with 2,000 people! They say, “All things in life happen for a reason.” Perhaps this is so with the love story of Sean and Catherine whose loved ones signed them up for the show without their consent, or even knowledge of. They were not too eager or accepting of this; however, they decided to go along with it for the experiences in store gauged their senses of curiosity and adventure. This was an opportunity to step outside of the box, travel the world and really, take a break from work. “I was very skeptical with the mentality that this is a TV show and I would not really find love on here. Never imagining, of course, that I would meet my wife,” Sean said. Catherine did not even think he would pick her, so she was embracing the experience itself by having fun and making new friends. But energies are contagious and Catherine’s positive and effervescent energy drew him to her. When he became more acquainted with her, he fell in love with her big and kind heart. On the other hand, Catherine knew of him before entering the show. She had admiration for his morals, values and faith amongst many other good, wholesome qualities that she really enjoyed and found intriguing. “He is a very present person. So going on a show where there are many distractions, it was really nice to have his focus on me when we

were together. That was really important,” Catherine said. After a little over a year of a blissful marriage, those same qualities still prevail today. “She is still the most playful person I know. She still has that light about her and of course, she loves me so much,” said Sean. “He is very, very loyal, present and focused on me when we are together,” Catherine lets out a

different part of the country and a family with a distinct culture and traditions. They carry many disparate traits that really fill out each other’s voids and in a sense, complete each other. Sean and Catherine feel blessed and appreciative for the many opportunities that are presented to them under the limelight, such as the soft opening of ‘The Eye of Orlando’ that they may not have experienced otherwise. Nevertheless, the experience has not changed their core values in anyway. With the limelight, they have gained a perspective that there are people watching them and they want to make a good example. At the end of the day, the simple things matter the most to them, “We both just chill. We don’t need to go out, be seen or do really fancy things. We love being at home, with our two dogs, and just spending time together. That is what really makes us the most happy,” Sean said. We wish them many more years of happiness together!

Military Canines: America’s Underrated Heroes
WORKING DOG — U.S. Air Force military working dog Jackson sits on a U.S. Army M2A3 Bradley Fighting Vehicle before heading out on a mission in Kahn Bani Sahd, Iraq, Feb. 13, 2007. His handler is Tech. Sgt. Harvey Holt, of the 732nd Expeditionary Security Forces Squadron. U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Stacy L. Pearsall
Everyone knows dogs are a man’s best
friend, but few are aware that some special canines have the backs of some of the toughest men in America. Dogs can be dated all the way back to being used by conquistadors in Florida to track down Native Americans. Even in WWI, many dogs were used as messengers and again in WWII dogs were used to sniff out enemy posts and positions. Military dogs are trained to sniff out IEDs or improvised explosive devices. These dogs and their handlers are put at first risk for any bombs and landmines in order to clear the path for soldiers behind them. Combat canines have been seen as one of the Pentagon’s defense tactics against hidden terrorist bombs. The arsenal behind these tough pups lies in their nose. Navy SEALs and Marines utilize German Shepherds for their keen sense of smell, which is 40 times that of a human’s, and for their natural ability to search and acquire objects.
The Shepherd’s close cousin, the Belgian Malinois, has been seen paired with Navy SEALs in parachute missions. When parachuting into water, these brave canines fly solo. The Belgian breed has a more compact build making it the ideal choice to fly tandem with soldiers but they still maintain the speed and intellect needed for military missions alongside their smaller stature. Amongst these parachuting pooches, one named Cairo is famous for having helped in the mission to capture Osama Bin Laden. Fully equipped as much as any other soldier, military dogs are treated as full members of the Navy SEALs or any branch of the military. You can visit navyseals.com to see full diagrams and descriptions of the military canine vests and equipment, including a video camera to give handlers a view of battlegrounds before entering. There are about 2800 active-duty dogs in the military and 600 of those are being used in the Middle East.
94 ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
When it comes to training these special ops pups, former Navy SEAL Mike Ritland is renowned for training dogs the SEAL way. He emphasizes that the fundamentals of training any breed of dog are non-verbal communication and exuding respect through body language. Ritland’s book How to Train Your Dog - The Navy SEAL Way explains that changing your mentality on how your dog views you and vice versa will facilitate your dog’s growth to its full potential. For those of you interested in adding a German Shepherd to your family, Central Florida German Shepherds breeds dogs locally from Tampa to Ft. Lauderdale.
