Leading Ladies for Valentine’s Day Inspiration. Norma Jean is famous for her blonde bombshell act, tottering on a slightly shorter heel to sex up her walk. But it was her carelessness that gave her kittenish appeal. She was often late, a bit forgetful, haphazard…and kept the man guessing. She may secretly be devious but would never be caught splitting the bill with her partner or arguing about money. Don’t forget diamonds are girls best friend! Happy Valentines.by Reuters / Bonad

> Continued thanks to all our readers and advertisers who have “gutted it out” along with us this past year through some very tough times in our economy. Your loyalty motivates us even more to provide the value necessary to give each of you an edge in the marketplace and we maintain our steadfastness in working tirelessly to create real value in the form of original editorials and visuals with a high degree of professionalism in ad structure, design and overall presentation. Unlike others, we feel a responsibility to give our readers solid and valuable resources to help make decisions in choosing a service or buying a product. We have an ‘open door’ policy and welcome your input, questions and concerns when it comes to contacting us directly. Despite the notion that we are the only Orlando based magazine in the city, it’s important to us that you make the distinction in letting our business clients know that you saw their advertisement in Orlando Style Magazine...where “real value” is found every time! The economy is getting better, albeit in small incremental steps. Despite the improved health of regional areas, we continue to be affected by matters of global concern whether it be headlines warning of European financial weakness or geopolitical worries of terrorism in Korea, Iran, Pakistan or Afghanistan. However, our major concerns here at home continue to be jobs and housing, with housing being the core to solving the jobs picture. We need the banks to take some of that interest-free money (our tax dollars) loaned to them to survive and reinvest it into the housing market in the form of new mortgage loans and modifications
styletome.com
so that the “real value” of our property can once again be realized. Foreclosing and reselling properties at 50% of “real value” to get it off the books just isn’t the answer. Our interpretation of a workable solution is to keep people in their homes through creative modifications of mortgage loans even if it means extending terms over an additional period of time. I’d love to have your input in this matter and as usual we invite your comments. Please email me at: sven@styletome.com Now, on to our fantastic February Valentine’s issue. In addition to the beautiful photo shoots that we show off in every issue of Orlando Style, you will also enjoy the “Entrepreneurs to Watch in 2011” and “Medical MVP’S” sections. We are also introducing our new partnership with the Orlando Magic. Please give us your feedback on the “Orlando Magic Illustrated” info page. Our best wishes to all for a healthy, successful and prosperous year in 2011!

The“Magic” That Keeps These Hollywood Marriages Strong By: Cathleen K. Bode & Caroline Walker Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> The word “love” has a unique meaning to billions of people across the world and no one definition can exactly determine what it means. It is thought to be one of the most complicated words with its etymology equally as varied. The word “love” was first recorded as “lufu” in early English writings in the 8th century and continues to be seen in a variety of spellings with a wide range of definitions. As described in Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, love is the third tier that every human is trying to fulfill after they have achieved their physiological and safety needs, therefore it is human nature for people to spend their whole lives in search of love. Love is what gives us a sense of belonging and helps us find our place here on earth, which is why so many people decide to take the so-called “plunge” into marriage. However, finding love is no easy task and neither is holding on to it. Marriage is hard work for any couple, and for celebrities, well… living a fast-paced life under the watchful eye of the media; it makes marriage even more daunting. However, there are a few celebrity couples that have broken the mold and proven that a Hollywood marriage can last.
styletome.com
Although our first celebrity couple has only been married for three years, they have shown the world on their show “Giuliana and Bill” that they are a couple built to last. Watching the first two seasons of their show, you see the couple go through a lot of trials trying to have a baby – but even through these trying times, they continue to support one another and be each other’s #1 fans. Giuliana and Bill first met at a holiday party and again a year later when Giuliana interviewed Bill, but both of them were in a relationship with other people. They had another chance at love when Giuliana went to interview Bill for a second time and they really hit it off. Afterwards, as told in their book “I Do, Now What?” Bill walked Giuliana to her car and asked her if “she wanted to go on a run sometime together.” She was a bit taken aback and instead they opted for something more traditional and went out for drinks the next night, which Giuliana proclaims, “it was my last date ever!” The couple was engaged eight months after they met and were married in 2007 in Anacapri. Giuliana and Bill credit their strong relationship to “putting in a little bit of effort everyday, knowing how to diffuse the tension before fights become explosive and also by having fun.”
celebs
Seal and Heidi Klum also credit having fun as a way of keeping their relationship alive. The couple first met in Germany and was later married in 2005 on a beach in Mexico. A special tradition that they share on their anniversary is a party for friends and family; during the festivities Seal and Heidi will take a walk with their kids to somewhere private where they exchange their vows and express their renewed commitment. In an interview with People magazine, Seal and Heidi tell key things that help keep a marriage in a good place. A few of the things they listed were to always put each other first, even before the kids, to seize every moment and to make sure to embrace both the big and small gestures with one another. Michael Douglas and Catherine ZetaJones has always been a couple that seize the moment. According to Catherine, Michael’s first words that he ever uttered to her were, “I’d like to father your children.” Michael and Catherine met at the Deauville Film Festival in France in 1998 where a mutual friend, Danny DeVito, introduced them to each other. Two years later, they were married. Although Michael is quite a bit older than Catherine, they have found ways to keep their marriage hot. In AARP magazine Douglas said, “God bless her that
she likes older guys. And some wonderful enhancements have happened in the last few years that can make us all feel younger.” Catherine and Michael’s relationship hasn’t been all laughing matters though, as Michael was diagnosed with throat cancer. They have supported each other throughout the process, which has brought them even closer to each other and their families. Catherine tells Ok! Magazine, “we’re kind to each other. We love each other very much. We have a lot of fun - a lot of fun - together.” Catherine and Michael have been going strong for ten years now. Our last couple is a Hollywood marriage that all of these celebrities could admire. Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are the golden standard for Hollywood couples. Tom first met Rita on his television show, Bosom Buddies, in 1980 but they didn’t start dating until 1985 and were married three years later in 1988. Rita and Tom have not only maintained a strong relationship together but also have created a strong working relationship. The two actors have acted in many films alongside each other such as, Sleepless in Seattle and That Thing You Do! Tom interviewed with People magazine and explained that their marriage is successful because he is, “married to the right woman.
::
I’m the luckiest man alive.” Tom makes the marriage seem so simple but goes on to explain in another interview that they “laugh everyday. Every morning. We laugh probably six to seven times a day. Big bona-fide laughs.” These four marriages have been able to keep it together through difficult times in their personal life as well as constant media attention. Although they may not all have it together, together they have it all.<

Scranton’s Journal of Clinical Psychology shows as many as 64 percent of New Years’ resolvers were successful after one month. Forty six percent were still working on their goals after six months. The odds are on your side – all you need is perseverance. “Establish a varied workout routine, eat everything in moderation, have smaller portions, reduce your alcohol intake, cut the ‘fat’”– if it’s overwhelming to do it all at once just do one at a time until you have incorporated them into your lifestyle.Whether it is dropping those extra pounds you’ve gained during the holidays, acquiring that killer body for the approaching summer or maintaining a light diet, your intentions will be much more sustainable when the promises become habit.
Style MD Sticking with a healthy lifestyle beyond New Year’s resolutions By: Cathleen K. Bode Credits: Flavia Robinson Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> The year began in full speed and keeping up with all those promises you made to yourself as you left 2010 behind is now the real challenge ahead of you. Yes, these promises were once called New Years’ resolutions. But let’s face it: it’s time to look at them as your new lifestyle choices and stick to what you once thought of as “goals to be reached.” And if a bit of encouragement is just what’s missing to boost your healthy active spirit, statistics gathered by the University of
The secret here is consistency, slip ups here and there are to be expected so don’t be so hard on yourself, or worse––throw in the towel! The thought of skipping gym on Friday because you’ve worked hard all week and swear you’ll make up for it on Monday may cross your mind so instead of the same old grind, take a brisk walk. You will get the cobwebs out of your brain and I bet you’ll get excited again and hit the gym the very next day. Be strong, take it one day at a time and enjoy the results of a well-lived healthy lifestyle. <
>> ASK DR. PALCESKI
Q: I feel like I always look tired. What can I do to look more rested?
A: BOTOX® is by far the proce-
dure I find to have the highest degree of patient satisfaction in addressing this very issue. BOTOX® works directly to relax the muscles responsible for frowning and other unwanted furrows and creases around the eyes and forehead. Relaxing the muscles responsible for these expressions results in a more rested appearance. This procedure combined with a good night’s sleep, a healthy diet and exercise will get you on your way to looking rested and rejuvenated.
Q: I no longer lie in the sun and
take very good care of my skin. However, I used to spend a lot of time in
styletome.com
tanning beds and at the beach and have a lot of sunspots I would like to get rid of. Is there anything I can do?
A:
Most cases of discoloration, age spots and freckles that appear on the face, chest and shoulders are the result of repeated exposure to the sun’s intense and harmful rays. People in sunnier climates, like Florida, are much more prone to sunspots and loss of elasticity in these areas. To eliminate these spots, I typically recommend a series of 2-3 Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser treatments. In addition to spots, many people also complain that their skin looks leathery and/or wrinkly. In this case, I strongly recommend fractionated laser treatments to refine skin texture and improve the overall appearance
of the skin. When IPL and fractional laser treatments are used in combination, the results are quite remarkable and can literally turn back the clock on the look and feel of your skin. As always, daily use of sunscreen is imperative for maintaining results and preventing future damage. Dr. Palceski looks forward to hearing from you and will be accepting questions at drp@reflectionsdermatology.com Dr. Palceski is a Board Certified Dermatologist and Dermatologic Surgeon and is the founder of Reflections Dermatology & Center for Skin Care. > When assessing their own beauty, Dr. Charles Newman,Jr.says some women have a hard time seeing beyond their perceived flaws. “Patients sometimes say things like ‘just fix it’ or ‘just make it go away’, requesting procedures they believe will miraculously eliminate their specific problem area.” He cautions however, that “just fix it” procedures don’t always yield the results truly desired because the modification can throw off the balance of the patient’s overall appearance. “The nose pictured in the magazine may look great on that particular celebrity, but it won’t necessarily work aesthetically with your eyes, cheeks, jaw line, etc. Our Newman Plastic Surgery:Charles Newman, Jr, MD & Dzi Newman, PA-C goal is to help patients claim whole beauty. It’s not about erasing or replacing individual parts. Our aim is to help uncover, enhance, and refine what is uniquely and authentically beautiful about you in a comprehensive and balanced way.”

Understanding the intricacies of aesthetic balance is part of what sets Dr. Newman apart. “There is a subtlety required in all procedures, even when extreme results are sought,” says Dr. Newman. “Subtlety is what ensures that people notice you and not the work you’ve had done, which is ultimately what most patients desire.” To enhance and complement surgical results, and for patients seeking non-surgical alternatives, Newman Plastic Surgery offers a breadth of available products and services including injectables and peels, spa services, and topquality, results-oriented skin care lines. The other distinguishing aspect of Dr. Newman’s practice is authentic compassion. Going beyond basic respectful treatment and courtesy, which should be expected at any doctor’s office, Dr. Newman and his staff strive to make their patients’ experience more personal. “We understand the deep vulnerability involved in showing a stranger your perceived flaws. It takes courage and we want our patients to feel safe, empowered, and boldly confident about the self-improvement choices they make here.” The warm, inviting environment

of the downtown historic office is enhanced by the equally warm staff that awaits you there, anchored by Dr. Newman’s physician assistant and wife, Dzi Newman, P.A.-C.“We have a high percentage of repeat patients,” says Dzi “because of the extraordinary rapport and trust we cultivate with each person who walks through our door. We’re here to help you achieve your best aesthetic potential and we do so by not only intricately customizing every treatment plan, but also by caring enough to help patients realistically manage expectations.” Dr. Newman is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and trained in all facets of his specialty. He performs all surgical procedures in accredited out-patient surgical centers and hospitals, frequently with overnight stays and nursing supervision to ensure the highest possible level of care and patient support. “It can be preferable to perform multiple procedures at once,” says Dr. Newman “not only to consolidate healing time but also to help ensure that all procedure results work in tandem to produce optimally balanced results.” < BOARD CERTIFICATION

Did You Know?
You may have noticed Orlando’s hometown heroes, the Orlando Magic, have been quicker, faster, stronger, and drier on the court this season. Well, you may not have noticed that last part, but the Orlando Magic players certainly have. This 2010-11 season, the Orlando Magic NBA Revolution 30 black adidas uniform makes its debut. Designed and developed through a collaborative effort between the team, the NBA and adidas, the new Orlando Magic uniform is made of 60% recycled materials and features 30% lighter, breathable mesh. The result: a more comfortable fit and handsome design. The black alternate jersey pays homage to the original road jersey worn in the Magic’s early years. The designers stayed true to the black and blue, keeping the trademark black with white pinstripes. The new jersey features blue ribbing and a more comfortable collar, giving the new uniform a sleek and modern look. But this uniform has beauty and brawn. The adidas NBA Rev30 uniform is designed to dry in twice the time and keeps athletes cooler on the court. It has been in development for four years and is designed to decrease friction and promote a player’s natural movement. Want in on the action? The new Orlando Magic black adidas NBA Rev30 jersey is available for purchase at the Magic Team Shop presented by adidas at Amway Center or at OrlandoMagicShop.com.

Staying Safe in a
Cyber World
By: Mark NeJame Contributor: Thomas Sadaka Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> February is here and we find ourselves looking forward to the month of love; looking back at the holiday season and our efforts to bestow our good wishes and blessing on our friends and family; and cringing as we review the bills we incurred. Our reflection and our looking forward find us firmly rooted in a technology-connected world. We posted “happy holidays” on our Facebook profile, emailed our colleagues, friends and family, bought holiday gifts online, and perhaps updated our profile and photographs on our online dating site in search of a new Valentine. In going about our daily lives and utilizing what technology has to offer, we expose ourselves to would be cyber scammers, fraudsters and bullies. How do we live our connected lives yet protect ourselves from the technology assisted identity thieves, conmen and stalkers? While volumes can be devoted to personal cyber-security, this article will outline a few simple steps we can take to provide ourselves with a bit more protection when dealing with online dating or social networking sites. Online dating and social networking sites
styletome.com
proliferate and are far more than a fad or trend. Online dating sites provide us with a means to connect with people outside of our traditional social circle of friends and acquaintances. Social networking sites allow us to reconnect with old friends, stay in touch with family and even market our businesses and endeavors. Through these sites we can create profiles that highlight our best assets, put forth our likes and dislikes, and chat with people who purport to have interests similar to ours regardless of whether they live down the street or across the world. We can be a bit of a voyeur and look at other people’s photos, videos and web-cams as we gain some sense of physical and emotional familiarity without ever having met. The best part is that we can do all of this in the comfort of our homes, waiting at the airport, riding in our carpool or in the corner of our office at anytime of the day or night. We must, however, keep in mind that meeting and “dating” people over the Internet involves risks. I believe that a good number of us still believe in a certain level of anonymity when we converse and exist in the virtual world, as such, our waistlines grow smaller, our chest sizes grow larger,

Many online dating sites and social networks do not independently verify any information from applicants or members. Photos posted on profiles are not verified and are often stolen from other people’s profiles, other sites on the web or purchased from stock photography. The goal of the scammer is to steal your money. The scammer will surf the profiles on the web and send emails or instant messages to other members and play on their vanities or insecurities in order to gain a position of trust. The ruse varies but the general scheme is for the scammer to find their way into their victims’ emotions and then into their wallets. The scammer will readily give you a Western Union or other instant money transfer ID and ask that you send whatever money you can so that they can pay their Internet bill or finish paying for the plane ticket to come see you. The ruse may also take on the form of a money order scam, a dire financial emergency scam and of recent popularity the “I’m in jail and need bond money” scam. The key to the success of these scams is the amount of information shared by the victim and the ability of the scammer to gain your trust. There are some general tips for protecting yourself on online dating and social networking sites that can minimize the risks of falling victim to a scammer. Obviously we can avoid the sites altogether but rather than advocating a form of agoraphobia lets look at some tips that will allow you to share in the joys of online dating or reconnecting with that nerdy kid that sat behind you in the 3rd grade. Knowledge is power. Before you join an online dating site do some research to find out what the site does to police itself. Some sites do nothing but allow an open forum for connecting while others gather the personal information of the subscribers and engage in some level of verification of the information provided.
Be cognizant of false representations. That 22-year-old blond co-ed from South Beach is just as easily a pot bellied middle-aged man from Poughkeepsie, NY. Watch for inconsistencies in their profile or in their various messages to you. There are webservices available that will scan the Internet for other sites or pages where a particular photograph appears (www.tineye.com). You can input the photographs used on a particular profile into the web-service and voila you see that the photo appears on 20 other sites ranging from professional network profiles to pornography. You can utilize the same service to check your own photos as well to make sure no one has stolen your pictures and posted them as their own on other profiles and sites.
“
The key to the success of these
scams is the amount of information shared by the victim and the ability of the scammer to gain your trust.
”
Be careful about the amount of information you share in your own profile. This tip is not limited to the profile you’ve posted on one particular online dating site but all of your online profiles, social and professional. It is not a difficult task for someone to find your other online profiles after they have read your dating site profile. Online search engines are very powerful and can easily lead the scammer to a treasure trove of information about you. Take advantage of the privacy settings of the various social networking sites. Lock your photos and walls down as best you can so that only the people who you choose can have access to your more private information. Be careful about opening attachments from your online friends as these can carry along a program that will create a backdoor into your computer system and grant access to all your financial and personal information. Invest in virus checking and antivirus software and make certain to keep the software current by downloading all available updates. Never send money or give financial account information to someone you’ve only met online. If you are going to send money, make sure it is done in a way where you
39
can trace the funds and have a trail that you can provide to investigators in case things go wrong. Remember that most Western Union type money transfers provide you with little or no recourse. Once the money is sent, it is gone from you forever. If your online contact starts to bully or stalk you, report the matter to law enforcement. Cyber-stalking is a crime in Florida (Florida Statutes 784.048) and is also grounds to apply for a protection order or injunction from the court. Further, report the person to the social networking or dating site so that their profiles can be restricted or shut down. If you do fall victim to a scam be prepared to provide all the information you can about the scammer to law enforcement. While jurisdictional limitations and minimum resources do restrict the ability of most agencies to investigate online scams, the more information you can provide them about the scammer the better their chances of success. If you choose not to report the case to your local law enforcement agency or they indicate that the matter is outside of their jurisdiction, you can still file a complaint about a financial scam with the Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Sentinel (www. sentinel.gov). The Consumer Sentinel takes complaints related to identity theft, do not call violations, Internet and online auction frauds, telemarketing scams, credit scams, business opportunity fraud and health and weight loss product scams. Finally, trust your instincts rather than your emotions. If the situation doesn’t feel right than it probably isn’t. Try to take a step back and evaluate the situation. As difficult as it may seem, walk away from the relationship. For more info visit www.NeJamelaw.com <

> When you’re driving through downtown Orlando it’s easy to miss a lot of the small details that brings certain uniqueness to the city. With all of the localities that make Orlando what it is, the one that just can’t pass you by are three letters that stand tall on a building located on the corner of E. Washington and N. Magnolia: KEL. Perhaps these letters are familiar to you, or perhaps you aren’t aware of what they stand for. Matt Englett, Managing Partner of KEL attorneys and native of the Orlando area, openly discusses exactly who KEL attorneys are, what they do, and why they’re here. As one of three managing partners of the nationally recognized law firm for foreclosures, Matt Englett is no stranger to the Orlando area. A graduate from Dr. Phillips High School, Matt continued his education at Florida Southern College in Lakeland to study business administration and later earned his Juris Doctorate from the Mississippi College of Law. It was almost immediately upon graduating from law school that Matt returned to Orlando to begin his law practice as a prosecutor. Working as a prosecutor allowed Matt to gain insight into how people in the community weren’t adequately represented simply because they couldn’t afford it. “My intent and vision for going to law school was to create and start a firm where we charge the least possible fee, are still able to pay our employees, and make a little bit of money. Also, that we eliminate as many hurdles as possible between a client and a good attorney.” It wasn’t long before Matt’s vision became a reality as he soon joined with fellow managing partners, Jeffrey Kaufman and Craig Lynd, and started the KEL firm in 1999. KEL Attorneys began as a general practice and progressively hired attorneys in different areas of the law as the office began to grow. “Our whole philosophy is when you are a KEL client, you are a KEL client for life. accident, I want to do your case. If you need something for immigration, I want to take care of your case. If you’re going through a divorce, I can handle that.We are licensed in 20 states but our physical locations are in Orlando and Tampa,” says Matt. It was then about three years ago when the real estate market began to collapse. The attorneys of KEL were already very familiar with the federal guidelines and regulatory laws that govern mortgages. “We started taking cases from people and we had great success. The word got out, people would tell their friends, and all of a sudden I’m going on the radio and TV shows to talk about it. So that is what we have become known for.” Being an Orlando native, Matt is also very familiar with the amenities our incredible city has to offer as he resides in downtown Orlando with his wife and two daughters. Currently, Matt is writing a book that focuses on those who have lost their jobs or have experienced a severe decrease in their income. “I wanted this book to be for all those people that hope things will get better, but end up burning through every penny they have going through their entire savings and 401ks,” says Matt, “the book is about trying to help those people before they get into a situation where they have nothing left.” The book is projected to be published sometime in March. Matt appears on the Buckethead Show (Real Radio 104.1) every Wednesday at 1pm to answer listeners questions. He has also made routine appearances providing expert analysis in foreclosures on local news and radio stations such as Local 6, FoxNews, Orlando Business Journal, The Orlando Sentinel, Channel 9, Eyewitness News, CNBC’s Kudlow Report, FOX Business, BBC, and Local NBC WESH. Matt also hosts his own talk show, “Under Oath” every Tuesday and Thursday from 6-7pm on WFLA 540am and answers live calls from his listeners.<

> Monster Trading Systems, headed by CEO and Founder David Stephenson, meets Central Florida and the financial markets with a bang. David Stephenson is an accomplished trader and software developer of automated trading systems. His interest in the financial markets started as a junior in college after seeing the movie Wall Street in 1987.This movie left an indelible impression and started his long journey to figuring out how the financial markets really worked. After completing an MBA in 1991, he felt very uneasy with the money management side of the industry and decided to forgo a career as a stock broker. However, since his passion was always in trading, he continued to research every aspect of the industry, tested many trading systems, trading his own personal accounts, and then developing his unique trading algorithms. In 2005, David decided that he needed to get a taste of the real thing to further this testing and confirm some of his concepts. He then got a job trading for Hansar Capital, a day trading firm in downtown Orlando. After a short stay and learning how the market makers moved large blocks of shares intraday, he now had one of the missing links, follow the institutions and hedge funds.
David Stephenson Attacks the Market! Read more at: StyleToMe.com
It wasn’t until while traveling that he noticed the book ‘Trend Following’ by Michael Covel at an airport book store. Finally, he had the biggest missing link that would bring all his years of research together. Not taking a job as a stockbroker, not following the crowd and deciding to do it his way, the hard way, had finally paid off. The answer was Price Action and he knew he had developed something special when investors, traders, and money managers were all coming to him for his picks and automated trading systems. In 2010, he launched Monster Trading Systems with an office in Maitland, Florida armed with a small staff. In October of 2010, they became the Presenting Sponsor for one of the biggest events in Central Florida, the Festivals of Speed. They opened the event with such names as Bentley Orlando, Rolls Royce North America, Tiffany & Co. and many other trusted names. They were also the corporate sponsor at the Festivals of Speed Miami, in November.

The beauty of automated systems, like the ones being offered by Monster Trading Systems, is that they are methodical and exact, and because of that, extraneous factors that have long been the nemesis of trading strategies are prevented from interfering with trade analyses and triggers. “Unlike humans, automated tools follow systems to the T, are disciplined with cutting losses, and more certain about when to let winners run, are devoid of emotions such as fear and greed, and perhaps more importantly, can run nonstop, day and night,” explained David Monster’s team has been able to remove the noise, and uncertainty from trading, to focus on the one thing that matters: price action. Markets are not chaotic, they move in trends, and that trend following philosophy is what sets Monster’s automated trading software apart from other trading companies, day traders and stockbrokers. Their slogan ‘Fire Your Broker’ hangs proudly in their office in Maitland. The company offers products for practically every type of trader (individual or professional) and every market in which the trader wants to pursue riches, such as in Stocks, ETFs, Commodities, or Foreign Exchange in up or down markets. In addition, the company offers complementary weekly ‘Learn to Trade’ workshops to ensure investors immeasurable financial growth. Most importantly, the systems will manage hundreds of trades and both exit losing trades while letting the winning trades run, automatically. An amazing feat. Taking a fabric design course back in high school helped spur this creative idea that later bloomed into these stunning, chic yet edgy handbags called Shag Couture. Hala is a graduate from the International Academy of Design and Technology where she majored in interior design and has worked in the field for over three years. During her time in school, she was often mistaken for a fashion student. She never got the hint that her love of fashion would later lead her to pursuing her own business.

Joanne McMahon By: Dawn Gardner Photo By: Sven J. Bode Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Drawing upon personal goals and beliefs, Joanne McMahon has found her own niche in both the retail and the ever-competitive restaurant markets with successful ventures into both fields. After a start with The Partridge Tree giftshop in the casual shopping district of Danvers, Massachusetts in 1989 (which has grown from a 900 sq ft boutique to a 3,000 sq ft storefront) and a sister store in Winter Park, Florida which opened in 1994, Joanne set her sights on the daunting world of the restaurateur. 310 Park South opened in January of 1999, filling a void for a restaurant on Park Avenue that would be comfortable for families while offering a casual atmosphere, full bar, and a menu that would accommodate a wide palate. As with any restaurant, 310 Park South would endure it’s growing pains; but Joanne found that listening, to both customers and employees, would help her achieve her goals of a successful business in the food and beverage industry. As she would say, “consistency and quality, in food

preparation and service, is what we strive for. It doesn’t happen 100% of the time, but we work to get as close as possible.” Nearly a decade after 310 Park South opened, an opportunity to expand and further the 310 brand presented itself. “The timing was right,” Joanne explains. “Sometimes the decisions weren’t easy, especially with the economic climate at that time, but we were ready.” In the space overlooking Lake Eola formerly occupied by Sam Snead’s, 310 Lakeside opened in 2008. A larger restaurant than the original 310, Lakeside offers the ability to host private parties of various sizes while keeping to the premise of a family-oriented and casual yet upscale experience. “It was something we felt we were missing with the Park Ave store. The ability to host private parties would be a key to our growth.” “Be patient, but be prepared.” Another opportunity presented itself with the expansion of 310 Park South in 2009 after the closing of a neighboring retail store. Effectively doubling the size of the Park Ave location, the expansion would allow both locations the ability to host private parties while keeping the flow of regular business alive and well. Joanne has left her imprint and personal aesthetic on all her ventures, from plan and design to implementation and execution. Always keeping an eye on the future, “it’s 24/7, but I love the work in progress. What’s most rewarding, though, is seeing an employee setting and reaching goals. There’s a certain pride in that.” <

Richard Hart A WORK OF ART; A LABOR OF LOVE
By Holly V. Kapherr Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> Richard Hart, Principal Auctioneer at Baterbys Art Gallery & Auction House sees his work as more than just selling a pretty picture. He sees the big picture, knowing that his work does much more than beautify homes and offices around the world with original art by world-famous artists as well as local talent. After being inspired as a young boy by the British Impressionist John Constable, and the collection of art held by his grandfather in London, Hart became a success in the art world as a premier auctioneer. “Art is a wonderful ice breaker,” he says. “People talk about it, connect over it and share ideas. That’s what originally drew me to the industry.” The staff at Baterbys, with over 25 years of experience prior to opening their Pointe Orlando location in 2009 and the Delray Beach location in 2010, knows that art is powerful, emotional and dramatic. “The thing that attracted me to auctioneering and to the art gallery business was the drama of the sell – the anticipation, the excitement and the education,” says Hart. Baterbys takes care to enhance their auctions with a learning experience that adds value to the experience. “When people come to our auctions, we want to share something they may not have known before about the piece being sold.” Using his rapier wit, command of a room and effective communication skills, it’s no small wonder why the native Londoner is considered one of the best auctioneers in the country. “An auctioneer must have the ability to think, act and react one hundred miles a minute,” says Hart. If you don’t have that, you won’t make it in this business.” To Hart, the auctioneer’s main goal is to be the communicator between the seller, the artist and the buyer. “Our job is to convey the message of the artist and explain why the piece is unique, special and worth the investment.” The whimsical artistry of Peter Max inspires Rich Hart. The bright colors, playful and confident, have made the artist a living pop

culture icon. “He has done so much in the forty years he’s been creating art. I admire his spirit,” says Hart. Hart offers his advice to watch for new, up-and-coming artist Elena Bond. Her paintings are crafted with a palette knife, which grant the paintings sharp edges and concentrated colors, yet there is a fluidity and elegance to each. “Her paintings are accessible; everybody loves them and best yet, they’re affordable. Snatch one up if you can,” says Hart. Baterbys also reaches for a higher goal: supporting local and national children’s charities through the communicative and connective characteristics of fine art. “Art brings people together. It is a cross-cultural and universal language. That’s something we acknowledge everyday at Baterbys,” says Hart. Baterbys takes pride in their partnerships with Threshold Center for Autism, Give Kids the World and Carver Middle School, among many others. Baterbys commitment to philanthropy sets them apart as a respected business model for the community. The Art Gallery & Auction House also provides a singular guarantee to each customer: a lifetime exchange policy and a money-back guarantee of authenticity for every work of art. “People who buy art are discerning, intelligent, passionate and, above all, demand a professional experience. We hope that’s what they get every time they buy art from us,” says Hart.< Image Descriptions

Within a few days of that trip, the Owens had developed a business plan. They returned to Austria in May for the Grand Opening of the HYPOXI studio in Vienna, and in September 2010, they opened their own flagship studio, only the second in the U.S., in the Dellagio Plaza in the stylish Dr. Phillips area of Orlando. The Owens say the local market has embraced HYPOXI because it helps people achieve visible results. Robin, who has become a HYPOXI master trainer, says “I know from my triathlon and marathon training days that there are hundreds of women who follow a daily fitness routine and still cannot lose those stubborn love handles and cellulite. We can help them!” “People who are looking for radical results without changing their lifestyles are always going to be disappointed,” Roddy says. “HYPOXI is part of a whole lifestyle routine, a real holistic approach and a natural alternative to liposuction.”
Roddy & Robin Owen Making Their Mark In The Better Body Business Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> Like most people, Roddy Owen and his wife Robin had plenty of friends who were frustrated by diets that didn’t work and exercise routines that failed to achieve results, but it wasn’t until they read about HYPOXI® that they understood why. HYPOXI is revolutionary because it is the first scientifically developed treatment proven to manipulate the body’s own circulatory patterns to accelerate fat loss in targeted areas of the body. As an entrepreneur and long-time Florida resident, Oxford-educated Owen could see how HYPOXI’s targeted body shaping system could be the foundation for a successful business in Florida. Before making a commitment, though, he and Robin decided to fly to HYPOXI headquarters in Salzburg, Austria, where sports physiologist Dr Norbert Egger developed and patented the system in 1997. On that trip, they met with scientists and company executives and also toured several successful studios—hundreds of thousands of people in more than 40 countries use HYPOXI, and Germany alone is home to more than 70 studios.

The studio itself is also a draw. Decorated with hardwood, travertine and a soothing décor, it feels more like an upscale spa than a gym. The HYPOXI equipment is sleek and modern, so while clients are working to improve their bodies, it also feels quite indulgent. Roddy, who is a managing partner of the exclusive HYPOXI distributor for America, sees tremendous opportunity for growth.“75% of the population say they’re dissatisfied with their bodies,” he says, “and the vast majority want a natural solution, not cosmetic surgery. That’s what makes HYPOXI a business concept with a great future in Florida and America.” The Owens look forward to growing their own business and also helping other studio owners achieve their entrepreneurial dreams. “This is really the most rewarding thing we’ve ever done,” they say.<

Sarah attributes her immediate success to a combination of passion, determination and discipline. “I know this sounds like a cliché, but everything in life happens for a reason and if you are paying attention and make the most of every opportunity, it prepares you for something later in life.” Sarah has always taken a “non-traditional” approach to market herself as an athlete, which has successfully transferred to her clients. “You have to engage more with the consumer, personalize your marketing approach and customize your sales process to each individual client’s need.”

> I hope that you’re having a happy new year! I know that I am! After experiencing the rush of Christmas and New Years, I’m ready to take on 2011 and make this the best year yet!
Alan, Craig,Vivuenne & Maggie at Orlando Style’s “Insider” party at Blue Martini
In Case You Missed It Style Events, News & Gossip from around the city By: Alex Holland Read more at: StyleToMe.com
Orlando Style threw an awesome ‘insider’ event at Blue Martini on December 16th. Great food + open bar + fabulous guests = a holiday party to remember! If you ever wanted to meet any of our writers and staff, they were on the scene, including my favorite Astrologer and Feng Shui Consultant Dikki-Jo Mullen! We drank, we danced, and we stayed up late talking about our favorite city! Classic dramas unfold every New Years Eve, when we must decide which parties to attend and whom we want to attend them with. I always get invited to more parties than I could ever go to in a single night - why can’t we agree to let New Years Eve last an entire week - then it might be possible to experience all of it! Last year I tried to do the party hop, so after resolving to avoid spending half the night in a taxi, I made it easy on myself this year, ringing in 2011 at the Grand Bohemian in Downtown Orlando. It was a fantastic night for my girlfriends and me as we enjoyed live music, champagne, and counting down the seconds into the New Year! Viva 2011! As readers of this column know, I am not so secretly in love with every glam band from the 80s, which includes Poison and therefore Bret Michaels. I would have loved to be at CityWalk to rock in the New Year with Bret, but CityWalk could not promise me a certain kiss from a certain man at midnight. Maybe next year...? I’ll keep my 2011 fingers crossed.

Orlando Style has just begun promoting the Event of the Week, and the week of January 15th was no exception with the grand opening of Heat, downtown Orlando’s newest upscale club, restaurant and lounge. After all the unseasonably cold weather, Heat should be an easy selection for an evening out. Promising tapas and live music, Heat is one more reason to visit the bars and clubs on Church Street. The Scottish-American Society of Central Florida organized their annual Central Florida Scottish Highland Games from January 15th to the 16th. While primarily advertised as an athletic event, there is enough food, music, arts and crafts to make it worth a weekend trip. You can even participate in some of the games yourself, though I’d advise entering the Archery Tournament over any of the other more dangerous games that require you to sign a waiver. While it’s not every weekend, there’s something about the sound of bagpipes that I really love sometimes! Everyone knows that Orlando Style has access to the best VIP parties in the city. Get on our mailing list and you will be the first to find out what’s hot and happening with our exclusive email updates. Get on the list at www.styletome.com to find out about the Event of the Week, Grand Openings, Exclusive Parties and more! See you next month! < Know of a not-to-be-missed event? Do Tell!

> Throughout the Orient the gentle Rabbit or Hare is a welcome message bearer. This year promises a comparatively placid and peaceful cycle following the feisty Tiger. In Japan, this year is attributed to the gentle house Cat. Whether it’s a bunny or a kitten on patrol, creative urges, logical problem solving, a kindly demeanor and clear-cut goals make life more mild, orderly and comfortable. Sensible and suave, the congenial metal hare or cat - will want quality and to shine. The expectation to acquire the best of everything is often fulfilled. Rabbit’s legendary flexibility is in evidence. There is a tendency to play both ends against the middle successfully, come out on top and still remain on cordial terms with all involved.
Chinese Astrology Year of the Metal Rabbit Feb. 3, 2011 - Jan. 22, 2012 By Dikki-Jo Mullen Astrologer & Parapsychologist Read more at: StyleToMe.com
The Oriental astrology cycle follows a pattern of twelve years. Five elements: fire, water, wood, metal and earth are incorporated in a sixty year pattern. Then the animal pairs repeat. The twelve animals hide in the hearts of those born during their year. Chinese New Year begins at the second New Moon following the winter solstice. This occurs in late January to mid February. It almost always coincides with the New Moon in Aquarius in the familiar western zodiac. Legend teaches that Rabbit was the fourth animal rewarded with its own year for answering an invitation to a party hosted by the Buddha. Those born during a Rabbit year are gifted with longevity, as well as a refined and virtuous nature. The well-mannered, unassuming and scholarly Rabbit is a much sought after partner in both marriage and business relationships. Respected for artistic ability and sensitivity, Rabbit practices discretion in all things.

Bon Appetit
> Azure waters frosted with ivory waves, sandy beaches dotted with palm trees gracefully swaying in balmy breezes are images that suggest romantic retreats for lovers. Potent magical traditions from Hawaii, Mexico and the Caribbean lend credibility to the legends of love forever linked to these flower-filled corners of paradise. Untap their potentials to invoke a special love blessing for Valentine’s Day or whenever romance beckons throughout the year. Prepare a salad of fruits to charm your beloved. If you’re alone and looking, it’s good to savor the dish alone. It will increase your aura of love and enhance the possibilities that you’ll attract a special someone. Select fragrant and beautiful fruits with reverence and gratitude. As you prepare the salad think only of love and joy. A cantankerous cook will poison all that he or she touches with ill will or anger. Ask for the highest good and summon the spirit of each fruit as you place it into a bowl made of wood or clear glass. To build more energy, turn on the music. Calypso, Celtic, reggae, luau, etc. can be played as you prepare this dish. The recipe makes two generous helpings, which is all you will need.
Love Potion #9 Tropical Island Magical Salad Of Love Fruits By Dikki-Jo Mullen Astrologer & Parapsychologist Read more at: StyleToMe.com
Ingredients
1 banana thinly sliced 1 peach thinly sliced ½ cup of pineapple, diced 1 medium orange peeled and sliced 1 papaya peeled and diced 1/4 cup coconut, flaked 1 tsp honey OR brown sugar 1 tsp. grated or candied ginger Preparation
Gently mix all of the fruits together. Chill in the refrigerator. Toast the coconut over low heat until it is a light brown. Set it aside to use as an optional garnish. The heavy lunar energies of coconut create a flavor many people prefer in moderation. Stir together the honey or sugar with the ginger. Add to the salad bowl and serve. Magical Attribute and Love Legends
Banana: Because of the spear-like shape it has been credited with passion and aphrodisiac qualities since earliest times.
Peach: Originally from China. The peach grew in the garden of Mother Zhei Wang as an elixir of life. The Old Man, Shou La, is portrayed with his hand stuck in the cleft of the peach, hinting that the peach is a source of strength and renewal. Use it to assure the immortality of your love and youthful beauty. Papaya: Guatemala’s mystical tradition credits this with love strength. It’s a marvelous digestive aid. It has enzymes, which assist in maintaining good health, which is always an essential element in lovemaking. Pineapple: This emblem of welcome and hospitality will protect your love from old wounds. Coconut: The Moon’s symbol of night’s peace and feminine mystique is present here. Orange: A special bridal flower since at least the 12th Century, oranges relate to purity of heart and precious love. Oranges are thought to be the golden apples from the Garden of Hesperides in Greek mythology. Ginger: Communication and clear understanding are promoted by ginger. It opens the throat to assure eloquence of tongue and the exchange of only kind words. Brown Sugar: draws sweetness and kindness. One island legend tells us that a sugar cane burst open to let the first man and woman step out. This ascribes sugar as the source of life. Honey: Aphrodite’s priestesses kept honeybees. Other great love goddesses are linked to honey as well. Demeter and Deborah often have bees as emblems. In Egypt honey was once used as an embalming fluid. It is also the only food that never spoils. This shows that honey represents a triumphant love that spans numerous lives. Centurions, those who live to be a hundred or more have only one thing in common. All consume honey regularly. Use raw honey if possible. (Excerpt from Dikki-Jo’s Book “Koo Hollie and The Spirit of Prism Rosa“) For more info email Dikki-Jo Mullen at: skymaiden@juno.com<

Spiritual, Sensual, + Savory Dragonfly Sushi
By: Cathleen K. Bode & Dana Damato Read more at: StyleToMe.com
styletome.com
> From the moment we walked through the door of this exquisite modern styled establishment located in the upscale Dellagio Plaza on West Sand Lake Road in Dr. Phillips, we knew we were in for a treat! The Dragonfly dining experience prides itself in three elements; Spiritual, Sensual, and Savory. These three essential elements are exactly what the Dragonfly team fulfills for every visiting guest as they take pleasure in a romantic and trendy modern Japanese pub culture.
From the signature sashimi and specialty rolls menu, we were treated to a delectable Seared Big Eye Tuna Tataki, Asian Pear & Ponzu, followed by a Garlic Rub Escolar with Yuzu-Soy Vinaigrette, the Black ‘n Bleu roll, and lastly the greatest of them all, the signature Dragonfly Roll. Ingeniously crafted with Tuna, albacore, & wrapped with grouper baked with spicy sauce, topped with scallions and eel sauce resulting in a savory sushi infusion our taste buds have never experienced.
The dining experience began with a toast of Champagne to stimulate our taste buds and to prepare us for what was to come. Bringing out our first round of the best selected appetizers on the menu;Wakame Salad with Pine Nut Butter, Daikon & Lemon, Butter Sautéed Edamame, Togarashi, Sea Salt & Bonito Flakes, and Rib Eye Yakisoba, a delicious noodle dish with sliced rib-eye steak combined with green peppers, red peppers, carrots & green cabbage garnished with aonori & scallions definitely got our taste buds dancing! The menu items are served to share ‘tapas’ style in selections of sushi, sashimi, and robatayaki (an open fire grill), which soon followed in our main menu dishes next to come. From the Robata Grill; Savory Chicken Wings paired with 3 robata dipping sauces of Orange Yuzu, Spicy Miso, and Tare, which were served as a delicious compliment to the meal. Next on our list was the Miso Yaki Black Cod served with wild mushrooms & Chrysanthemum leaves, Crispy Shrimp with Yuzu-Garlic Mousseline & Candied Walnuts garnished with scallions, toasted sesame seeds, and jalapenos, and our table favorite, the Shari Risotto with Wild Salmon, Shemiji Mushroom, & Cilantro.
Dragonfly’s experience exemplifies a cozy, trendy, romantic lounge experience affiliated with possibly the most exquisite Japanese cuisine in town. Dragonfly is a restaurant that has exceeded any and all of our expectations with its flawless service, unique drink menu, and an impeccable dinner menu prepared by Dragonfly’s Executive Chef, Ray Hideaki Leung. Dragonfly is not just a restaurant, but also a dining destination to serve any occasion for locals and visitors … a perfect place to enjoy a romantic “Valentines” dinner out with that someone special. < 8000 W. experiences and expressions through many of the well known electronic, social media environments such as Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and LinkedIn. In these virtual communities people engage with others, share feelings and experiences while extending their base of friendships and social acquaintances. As a magazine fulfills the need to have a greater visual experience than an electronic text driven medium can deliver, ChilloungeNight is the physical aspect of these platforms that fulfils the humanistic need to gather, participate and connect with each other. It is this underlying premise that has allowed ChilloungeNight to deliver an exceptional social, community experience to a passionate audience.

> ChilloungeNight’s strives with each event to create “A Night to Remember” for its guests. That is why ChilloungeNight is more than just another night out . . . more than a unique transformation of an outdoor space into a magnificent outdoor lounge. ChilloungeNight is a reflection of the social needs of people to interact with others whom we have a commonality. In today’s hectic pace of fitting work and leisure into the demands of our daily schedules, there is a very human need to come together with others and create a sense of community. Community can take many forms and for ChilloungeNight, community is a gathering for adults from all walks of life providing an opportunity to engage in a social interaction with others in a comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable environment. It is the connecting of people in the physical form, reflecting the same aspects of community that have become so prevalent in a virtual sense through the advent of electronic villages and communication platforms. There exists today a virtual connectivity to others allowing for the sharing of

The virtual villages alone, however, cannot completely satisfy the nature of beings to connect and communicate. Experiences create memories and it is these memories that live on within us and further develop our personalities. The collecting of personalities in the community created by ChilloungeNight is the foundation for so much more such as building relationships, extending social norms, deepening bonds and sharing experiences and memories. If Facebook and Twitter are platforms for tying people together through a sharing of thoughts, ChilloungeNight is the physical platform for people to express, share and engage. When attending ChilloungeNight there is a sense of invitation that is created through the environment and programming throughout the night. As guests at the event, those attending have this sense that everyone was invited to the party and that they all have something in common. The interaction of the ChilloungeNight guests is like those at an invitation only party. This feeling further enhances the experience adding to the atmosphere of openness and strengthening the desire to engage in conversation, which is a match to the human need to engage with one another. It is all of these elements cleverly and artistically blended with a touch of “mystique” that creates the feeling that “ChilloungeNight is the place to be”. <

LOOK FABULOUS Considering plastic surgery? Choose your doctor carefully. By George H. Pope, MD, FACS Did you know that in most states (Florida included), any licensed physician may perform cosmetic surgery? This means a doctor with no residency training in plastic surgery can perform facelifts, breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tucks, or any other cosmetic operation. When you are considering cosmetic surgery, the most important decision you make is choosing your surgeon. How can you choose well? Board certification by The American Board of Plastic Surgery ensures the doctor has successfully completed an accredited plastic surgery residency program, training extensively under the supervision of highly skilled, experienced board certified plastic surgeons. It also means the surgeon has passed a comprehensive written examination, and an oral examination that tests the ability to make decisions under pressure. And, to maintain board certification, the surgeon must commit to a demanding schedule of lifetime continuing education and a code of ethics that puts patient safety first. It’s also important to be sure your plastic surgeon has privileges at area hospitals, and operates only in fully accredited surgical centers. Good hospitals have high standards and rigorous credentialing procedures, and they carefully monitor surgeons’ performance in their hospitals. This is an important safeguard for patients.

Don‘t Miss the beat
Welcome Lady Antebellum By: Cathleen K. Bode Credits: Alicia Satchfield Read more at: StyleToMe.com
> If you are one of those music fans that despise the country genre because of constant references to pickup trucks, rednecks, and beer, you might want to give a closer listen to Lady Antebellum. Despite coming together in Nashville, Tennessee, the group lacks the ‘twang’ sound many country artists flaunt, and displays more of a mixture of country and pop, while maintaining the nostalgic flair reminiscent of great country tunes. The trio consists of Hillary Scott, daughter of country music singer Linda Davis, Dave Haywood, and Charles Kelley, brother of pop singer Josh Kelley. Charles and Dave were starting to work together in Nashville

when they met Hillary and invited her to join the group that became Lady Antebellum. Hillary and Charles take lead vocals with Dave doing background vocals and guitar. One of the band’s unique qualities is a clear and sweet harmonious sound. Their chart topping single “Need you now” is proof of this, as just one listen will draw you into the song. There is something undeniably engrossing about such an honest sound. The song merely reflects many lovers’ emotional turmoil after splitting up. Winning Single of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year at 2009’s Country Music Awards was just another step in the band’s climb to fame. Forming in 2006, Lady Antebellum

self-titled debut album came in 2008 to a very welcoming audience. It’s almost as though the music world was waiting for a group like this to introduce a new sound in the country music scene. Singles from the album include “Love Don’t Live Here,” “Lookin’ for a Good Time,” and their first song to reach #1: “I Run to You.” The band’s official website emphasizes their down-to-earth sound by revealing a bit of the process they use in writing songs. Their second album, titled “Need you now,” with eight of the eleven tracks being co-written by the trio, Charles Kelley admits, “Songwriting is kind of like our little group therapy.” It seems that the three musicians have accomplished together what they couldn’t individually, despite solo artists generally being more prominent in country music. It’s obvious, however, that they don’t mind sharing the journey. On the site, Hillary discusses how she would never go back to being a solo artist now that she is in a band, and happily confesses: “I’m the baby of the group!”

Despite Lady Antebellum’s ability to entertain an audience, it’s clear that they care as much about connecting with listeners as they do about getting them to bust a move. It’s admirable the way they view their music; Hillary says on the website that, “all of these songs are just about feeling to the utmost of your ability.” The songs let fans embrace their raw emotions and know that they aren’t the only ones to feel this way. Hillary also emphasized her pride in the band’s “ability to be that honest and just lay it all out there.” In addition to “Need you now,” Lady Antebellum’s newest album includes “American Honey,” a gentle country song with impressive female vocals only made better by the male background voices. The trio’s sound blends smoothly in this song that gives an “innocent, pure, and sweet” feel, just like the lyrics suggest. “Hello World” gives off a ballad feel and concerns a man’s re-awakening to his life, while “When you got a good thing” is a duet that will make anyone want to fall in love.<

The elegant and slender Abyssinian is your ideal cat companion. A powerful jumper and climber, this was one of the first breeds to be domesticated in ancient Egypt. Remember, Aries is always the sign of the pioneer and athlete. Streamlined, with a long tail, prominent ears, short hair and triangular faces, the Abyssinian is cinnamon to reddish brown in color. This reflects an affinity with Mars, the red planet, indicator of masculine energy and ruler of Aries. A peculiarity of the breed is that more male than female Abyssinian kittens are born.
Persians are your feline star companions. Round faces framed by long, beautiful fur makes this glamour kitty the favorite among winners in cat shows. Placid in temperament, Persians relate to the calm, deliberate life style preferred by Taureans. Creature comforts such as warm fires and soft pillows can be shared with appreciation by cat and owner alike. Originally called Angoras and brought back by Crusaders returning from Turkey and Persia, the Persian has a pampered look. This accents a harmony with Venus, the celestial love and beauty indicator and ruling planet of Taurus.
Your feline alter ego is the Manx, sometimes called the rabbit cat. Noted for its gentle voice and great intelligence, this breed has excellent balance and a formidable reputation as a mouser. The Manx has long hind legs with a hopping gait and great speed suggesting Mercury, planet of travel and thought, the ruler of Gemini. Intellect and the cosmic ruler of Gemini. The Twins’ duality is seen in the fur, a dense topcoat covers a soft undercoat. Lore about how the Manx lost its tail (actually the result of a natural mutation) are as varied and intriguing as any Gemini storyteller could wish.
The domestic shorthair, America’s own home grown breed, is your feline companion. Always loyal to home and family, the domestic shorthair is said to be descended from the first cats that arrived with the pilgrims! Self sufficient yet loving with small pointed ears, large eyes and a rounded head, this is the kitty that’s always portrayed curled on the hearth surrounded by family members or starring in the Broadway musical Cats. Versatile and tough, it can live as a cherished family pet, stray alley cat, or working as a farm cat.
The Rex, whose name means king, is the obvious choice for the Leo cat. Leo is the sign of the Lion, the acknowledged king of the jungle. Its pedigree and history are well documented, members of this breed have pure origins dating back to a single male cat born in England during the late 19th Century. Quiet, loyal and affectionate with a silky, curly yet short coat, like a clipped lion’s mane, this cat is excellent with children. Nicknamed the poodle cat, Rex doesn’t shed.
Discriminating Virgos will prefer the clever and rare Korat cat. Pure grey-blue with sensitive, expressive amber eyes, this cat tends to be very healthy and of a medium size. It originated in Thailand where it is thought to bring good luck to its owner. Korat means ‘silver’ in Thai, suggesting both the color and preciousness. The Korat, more than any other breed, will strive to please its owner by learning tricks. It can shake (hands or paws), roll over and retrieve on cue. Calm and loving, it seldom meows or creates stress.
Russian Blue
Maine Coon
Oct. 24 - Nov. 21
Nov. 22 - Dec. 21
Exotic with interesting beauty, the Siamese is Libra’s star crossed cat. Most sources agree that this cat really came from Siam. Bred to be kept by the Royal Family, commoners were once forbidden to own a Siamese. Libra has a traditional link with the Far East. These felines with turquoise eyes, a white body marked with a facial mask and legs and tail of a contrasting color (called chocolate, lilac or blue points), Siamese are pretty, sociable and vocal, just like their Libra owners. Sensitive, quick witted and responsive, Siamese cats have an affinity with the theater. They are often called upon as actors in stage productions. (Most notably the role of Pyewackett in Bell, Book and Candle.)
Courageous and assertive, the Russian Blue is the Scorpio cat. Russia has a traditional astrological link with Scorpio and its ruling planet Pluto, tied to rebirth and the after life. The Russian Blue has thick, close fur of a uniform blue-grey shade and bright green eyes. A tall kitty with thin ears, it creates an otherworldly impression. Its tiny oval feet and long whiskers allow it to prowl as a master detective. The mystery loving Scorpio will appreciate these qualities. One legend states The Russian Blue actually was kept as a pet by Czars, but in true Scorpionic tradition, the mystery of its origin has never been fully solved.
The Maine Coon Cat, a fluffy and furry American breed with tufted ears and paws, is the Sagittarius cat. Gregarious, and huge in size, this beauty reflects the qualities of Jupiter, ruler of Sagittarius. Largest of planets, Jupiter relates to exaggeration and wealth. One legend says this cat is the offspring of raccoons and house cats. Another says they are descendants of Marie Antoinette’s cats, smuggled to Maine when their mistress was permanently delayed by the guillotine. Still another says they are descended from Viking cats, who tagged along with explorers 400 years before Columbus discovered America. Maine Coons are true Yankees with curious, adventurous personalities and quiet voices. They can have eyes of copper or gold and many colors from tabby to solid white or black.

Dec. 22 - Jan 19
The Burmese, status conscious and dignified, is the Capricorn feline. A well documented pedigree traces this cat to France. It emigrated to the U.S. during the 1930’s. A slim and elongated short hair, the Burmese has fur of a uniform deep, rich brown hue, a pointed head and large well shaped yellow eyes. Saturn, planet of tradition and conservative values, rules Capricorn and is in harmony with this aristocratic kitty. An expensive Medium and exotic beauty, the Burmese will brighten the lives of its 8owner with a quiet yet playful and loyal 1 8 personality. 2

This breed comes from Britain and is thought to be a descendant of the first cats brought to England by the Romans. The Exotic Shorthair has a thick, plushy coat that can be spotted, cream, red tabby, grey or black. The eyes are often of two different colors, gold and blue. It has a short, broad nose with2 facial features1 6 that resemble 5 the Persian. and versatile, in 3 Adaptable 8 true Aquarian fashion, this 2 1 cat welcomes new friends and a 9variety of life styles.5 7 Its 2 even temperament it a good choice2 5 makes 9 as a mascot for a store 8 6 or office.
The sign of The Fish has a rapport with The Turkish Water Cat.This is a newly emerging long haired breed. It has the unusual habit of leaping into the pool for the sheer joy of it. Which is why when we designed the new A8, we started with the very first thing you see. Its LED headlights not only demand your full attention, they are also the closest re-creation to daylight of any car on the road.* Not to mention the most efficient.† See how the rest of the A8 will demand your attention at audiusa.com/A8. The new Audi A8 is here.
