For nearly two decades, Nude Nite has allowed various forms of artistic talent to celebrate the beauty of the body via their respected mediums. From February 13th-15th, the 3-evening event returned to Orlando to do just that all over again. Thousands of attendees and artists showed up to the mustsee event which proved to be much more than an art show through unforgettable performances of saucy burlesque, high flying aerialists, live body painting and more. With a bazaarlike atmosphere and an abundance of bold imagery and unique artwork that you won’t find anywhere else, it’s no wonder Nude Nite is one of the largest national juried exhibitions in the country. It was high-energy all weekend long as a live DJ, strolling musicians and memorable artwork by emerging artists and photographers came together to put on this powerful event. FALL IN LOVE WITH

Marco Island By Riesa Pascal

Prepare for an unforgettable vacation on Marco Island, the largest of Florida’s famed Ten Thousand Islands

> When was the last time you went on vacation to experience life on the wild side? I love a beautiful resort and a relaxing pool just as much as the next person, but sometimes we need a vacation with that little extra kick. It could be something different for every person, but whatever your kick is, I guarantee you’ll find it at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, Golf Club & Spa. I had the pleasure of spending three unforgettable days at this stunning hotel and it didn’t take long to find out that Marco Island and its surrounding areas offer a remarkable vacation that suits my kicks to a tee: The fun, the thrills and the awe-inspiring beauty of nature and wildlife.

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

United Airlines provided the non-stop flight from Orlando to Fort Myers and in no time I was making my way towards the gorgeous Marco Island on a scenic ride through South Florida. As we got closer, the animal crossing signs became more exotic. Turtles, and gators, and panthers! Oh my! At this point I began to realize that this wasn’t going to be a typical beach resort vacation. Once we hit the charming city of Marco Island, we quickly arrived at our final destination— the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort. Once you’ve step into this magnificent resort, it becomes immediately apparent that you’ve been welcomed into a Marriott hotel. Their reputation

precedes them and for good reason. Friendly staff, grand decor and spacious, cozy guest rooms will have you dreading your imminent return trip home. I checked into my outstanding, ocean view room and changed into evening attire for an exquisite dining experience at Kurrents, one of the resort’s most upscale restaurants. My companions and I enjoyed a delectable selection of their signature seafood, steak dishes and fine wines on an open, outdoor lounge under the brilliant nighttime sky. The next morning we grabbed our bathing suits, sunscreen and sunglasses and set sail along the gentle waters for Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort’s exclusive Sailing and Shelling Adventure tour. Our cheerful captain, Jesse, was eager for us to catch a glimpse of a bottlenose dolphin, but it didn’t take long before we were surrounded by several on all sides. To say these guys enjoyed being the center of attention is an understatement! ‘Ooos’ and ‘ahhs’ filled the air as cameras snapped away at the playful mammals. Sitting on the bow of that ship, I had an incredible view of the peaceful waters surrounding me. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath

of some of the freshest air I’d ever breathed. I felt the warm sun on my skin and I relished in the gentle sea breeze across my face. It was a euphoric, blissful moment of my life that I’ll remember forever. We eventually docked the sailboat on Kice Island and got off for an entertaining shelling adventure. Mounds of seashells—all free for the taking— surrounded us in every shape and size. Jesse guided our shelling adventure by pointing out different shells, recalling interesting facts on the various ways they’re formed and by even contributing a few of her favorites to my own growing collection. On the return trip, it was impossible not to notice the spirited dolphins still following our wake or the paddle boarders cruising near the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort shore. From marine life to beach goer, a great time was had by all.

boarded brand new 2014 WaveRunners and got ready for what would be a thrill to be talked about for years. Our guide, Brian, has been leading these tours for seven years and it didn’t take a minute with him to see that he loves every moment of it. He led us on a 25-mile round trip through the Ten Thousand Islands where we got up close and personal with more dolphins and other wildlife that decided to join the tour. As the others and myself can all attest to, it’s impossible not to lose yourself in the ride as you whip around the Ten Thousand Islands and through the amazing mangrove islets. Best of all, the journey was more than just a high-speed thrill ride. It was also an unbelievably interesting educational experience. Periodically we’d bring our WaveRunners to a complete stop and listen intently as

That afternoon I participated in what would go on to be my favorite activity of the weekend. Marco Island Water Sport’s WaveRunner Excursion was an unforgettable journey through the Ten Thousand Islands of South Florida. After a brief safety training session, my companions and myself

Brian passionately recalled fascinating facts about the vegetation and wildlife around us. That night we had the pleasure of witnessing one of Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort’s signature traditions. The Sunset Celebration performance at Quinn’s on the Beach. A fire dancer wowed the crowd with a memorable show in front of the spectacular Florida sunset. Afterwards, we enjoyed fresh cocktails and delicious tropical island food at the beachside restaurant and bar. As the night came to a close, I walked across the soft, white sand glowing luminescent under the silver moon. I took a moment to just bask in the peaceful calm of the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort. The serene atmosphere and relaxing vibes that followed me in everything I did and surrounded me everywhere I went was a feeling that I never wanted to let go of. For my last, but certainly not least, bit of adventure, I had the pleasure of spending my final day checking out one of the island’s most popular excursions through the Everglades. Dave was our bus driver to Everglades City and tour guide for the afternoon. Having lived in the area since 1986, we couldn’t have had a better, kinder gentleman to show us around. From endangered burrowing owls and red belly turtles to the smallest operating US Post Office in the world. We saw it all, but that was

just a taste of what was to come! We made our way to Totch’s Island Airboat Tours where we boarded an airboat and took an extraordinary tour through the Everglades. We reached speeds of up to 35 mph and had intimate, close encounters with a Great Blue Heron, dwarf raccoons and even an 11-foot, 60-year-old gator taking a leisurely swim past our airboat. Afterwards we met Totch’s Gator Guy and his live, baby gator, which we all took turns holding and posing with. Lunch came in the delicious form of breaded gator nuggets and pan seared grouper salad at the notorious Oyster House known for its fresh seafood and steak. It’s never easy to say goodbye to a vacation as perfect as the one you’re bound to experience at the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort. In my case, a few drinks were in order at Korals Sushi & Cocktail Lounge to properly say my farewell. My companions and myself enjoyed delectable appetizers around the table as we shared stories from our unforgettable three days as guests at this exceptional resort. What will forever be most impacting to me was simply the way in which everyone we interacted with was so in love with their respective jobs. I found that unlike many other travel destinations, Marco Island was full of locals and long-time residents. Therefore a vast majority of the staff we ran into both knew the island very well

and loved it with a deep, sincere heart. More importantly, they also truly cared about educating the resort guests and making sure they’ve done everything in their power to ensure each visitor has a wonderful, unforgettable experience. From our sailboat captain Jesse, to Brian from the WaveRunner excursion. From our 7th generation airboat captain Wes, to our Everglades City driver Dave. From the Gator Guy to the friendly servers at the Oyster House and every single person in between. They all emanated an undeniably contagious passion for their work that translated into an exciting, memorable time had by all. Now is the time to escape from your everyday vacation and take a trip to the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort where you’ll experience a vacation full of nature, education, thrills, incredible wildlife encounters and so much more.<

AWAKEN

YOUR INTERNAL FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH

Dr. Deborah Harding’s Preventive Medicine for Optimal Health and Vitality By Maria Delis

> “We start by conducting a comprehensive evaluation to determine your specific metabolism, endocrine system’s functionality, and overall physiology,” says Deborah Harding, M.D. At her 7,000-square-foot Anti-Aging Center, located in Metro West, her clients receive more than just a peek into their health. Based on the results of their Elite Executive Health Evaluation, Dr. Deb and her specialized team develop an individualized program for each patient. “There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to patient care. You are unique, and so are your issues, goals and concerns regarding your health,” Harding believes. By pinpointing what is happening internally, both physician and patient can take a proactive approach not only to healthcare, but also to anti-aging. A fit body and mind prolong a vigorous life. And by maintaining good health, you can slow down the inevitable aging process. Triple-board certified in Internal, AntiAging and Sleep Disorder medicines, Dr. Deb began a new journey a few years ago after experiencing a “disconnection” from her patients. She saw that the traditional healthcare model did not allow for strong physician-patient rapports for obtaining and maintaining optimal health. She wanted the freedom to offer her patients the latest science without restrictions. “My practice [then] evolved into a unique concierge medical practice called the Harding Anti-Aging Center, which provides the ultimate personal experience to better health,” says Harding. In fact, clients choosing the full-day Elite Executive

Physical even enjoy a private lunch with Dr. Deb. The center offers Follow-Up options, including 24-hour physician access. For $300 per month, patients continue their close rapport with their physician, where they can even text their health concerns to Dr. Deb. Moreover, concierge medicine allows for same-day, on time and unhurried appointments in a relaxing environment. The center looks and feels like a luxury spa – Marble countertops, a chic front desk, a Mediterranean style lobby, VIP rooms, an executive business center, a multi-media room and conference space. Now, concierge medicine may make some feel a bit apprehensive. In today’s economy should we forego our already expensive health insurance plans and pay out-of-pocket for enhanced services? But, as the traditional healthcare model becomes less effective, more medical practitioners and patients see concierge medicine as a better alternative. Research has found that boutique medical practices, that is, practices that limit the number of patients seen and opt-out of health insurance plans, can provide more effective and personalized preventive care. And that is the key to not only maintaining good health but also reducing hospital utilization rates. In a 2012 American Journal of Managed Care peerreviewed article, researchers found that this practice model allows physicians to take a more proactive approach. This increase in physician interaction contributed to “lower hospital utilization and ultimately lower healthcare costs.” Keep in mind that many patients at these medical practices can still use their health insurance to cover screening test costs, while

their membership affords them the benefits of personalized healthcare. The Harding Anti-Aging Center takes the role of your primary care doctor, but with a stronger emphasis on comprehensive anti-aging programs. Along with preventive anti-aging medicine, in-house bone density and thyroid screenings, fitness plans and new cognitive software, the Center also offers nutrition and lifestyle recommendations for both men and women. “Our team of anti-aging physicians, certified personal trainers, nutritionists, and chefs will work with you every step of the way to create a unique and targeted nutrition program, to increase your muscle mass, lower your body fat, and increase your metabolic rate,” states the Center. And because we all need our beauty sleep, the Center diagnoses and treats sleep disorders too. Although internal youth is the Center’s focus, Dr. Harding and team offer noninvasive cosmetic procedures, including glycolic facial peels, eyelash enhancement, specialized skin care therapies and Dr. Deborah Harding’s Specially Formulated Anti-Aging Skin Care Line. Above all, Dr. Deb wants to work closely with her clients to help them regain and maintain optimal health. The advanced laboratory analyses offered not only give a detailed picture of her client’s current health, but they are important tools in preventive medicine. As our body ages, inevitably it will succumb to disease. Modern medicine has yet to give us ambrosia, the food of the ancient gods. Preventive medicine, however, can prolong our lives.

This is what the Harding Anti-Aging Center wants to emphasize – prevention. And one is not too young to take a proactive approach to his or her health.

March is national colorectal cancer awareness month, yet few are familiar with the risks associated with the second biggest cancer killer in the United States. CRC affects both men and women, claiming more than 50,000 lives per year. Smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, type 2 diabetes, alcohol abuse, a diet high in red and processed meats, increase one’s chances of developing CRC (a highly treatable cancer when caught early). The risk increases after the age of 50, but CRC can make its early stage appearance sooner. Invasive screenings are not that appealing and many patients put them off until it is too late. Among the elite laboratory tests the Center offers, Dr. Deb highly recommends a new, noninvasive screening test. ColonSentry ® measures the expression of seven gene biomarkers (signatures) in the blood that are early warning signs of CRC. If a patient’s risks are high, Dr. Deb will recommend her patient undergo a colonoscopy. “Colonoscopies are the standard screening exam for detecting colon cancer,” Harding says. Between scopes, however, which can be periods of 5 – 10 years, we need something else to check for changes in our bodies. By incorporating this blood test in their annual physical, patients take a greater proactive role in their health. In addition to blood tests that detect breast and ovarian cancer risks, the Center offers EarlyCDT ® - Lung. The simple blood test aids the physician in risk assessment and in early detection of lung cancer in high-risk, asymptomatic patients. An elevation of any one of the seven autoantibodies above a predetermined cutoff suggests that a tumor might be present. The Center offers urine tests that check for kidney and bladder cancers too. The goal is to catch disease early and, sometimes, traditional screenings are not enough. “According to the standard blood test for cholesterol, your levels may be normal, yet you could still be at risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke,” Harding says. “We check cholesterol from a molecular standpoint,” she told me. Individuals with small-molecule cholesterol are at a higher risk of having a heart attack. The reason? It is harder for our bodies to eliminate smaller cholesterol molecules. With the proper therapy we can lower our risks. For more than twenty-five years, Dr. Deborah Harding has used her diverse medical background and knowledge of preventive science to help her clients live healthier lifestyles. She shares the Metro West facility with her husband of more than thirty-four years, Dr. Victor Harding. Although their practices are separate, Dr. Victor is now transitioning to concierge medicine and is the Anti-Aging Center’s Director of Research. Board certified in AntiAging, Sleep Disorders and Internal Medicine, his interests include obesity, cholesterol management and vascular problems. Both husband and wife also serve as faculty members at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine. Their future plans include merging their practices where anti-aging medicine is under an umbrella of concierge medical services. “A major goal of the Harding Anti-Aging Center is to further the knowledge of aging, especially as it relates to preventing cancer, dementia, and heart disease.”< www.hardingantiaging.com

CORVETTE

Z06 All New for 2015

> Chevrolet introduced the most track-capable Corvette in the brand’s history – the 2015 Corvette Z06. It stretches the performance envelope for Corvette with unprecedented levels of aerodynamic downforce, at least 625 horsepower from an all-new supercharged engine, and an all-new, high-performance eight-speed automatic transmission – all building on the advanced driver technologies introduced on the Corvette Stingray. “The new Z06 delivers levels of performance, technology and design that rival the most exotic supercars in the world,” said Mark Reuss, president, General Motors North America. “And the Z06 leverages the engineering expertise of GM, offering the choice of two worldclass transmissions, supercar performance without supercar fuel consumption and technologies that make it easier to fully enjoy the incredible experience of driving it.” The 2015 model is the first Corvette Z06 to offer a supercharged engine, an automatic transmission and, thanks to a stronger aluminum frame, a removable roof panel. The new, supercharged 6.2L engine is expected to deliver at least 625 horsepower (466 kW), and can be matched with either a seven-speed manual

or an all-new, high-performance eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters for manual control. The aluminum frame carries over from the Corvette Stingray and will be used essentially unchanged for the Corvette Racing C7.R. A track-focused Z07 Performance Package adds unique components for true aerodynamic downforce, Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires for enhanced grip, and Brembo carbon ceramic-matrix brake rotors that improve braking performance and contribute to greater handling through reduced unsprung weight. Although development testing is ongoing, the Z07 package has already recorded some of the fastest lap times ever for a Corvette, surpassing even the ZR1. “The Corvette Z06 is a great example of the technology transfer between racing and production Corvettes,” said Tadge Juechter, Corvette chief engineer. “First, we took what we learned on the Corvette Racing C6.R and applied that to the all-new Corvette Stingray. Then, using the Stingray as a foundation, the Z06 and C7.R were developed to push the envelope of performance on the street and the track.”

ogy, enabling it to cruise efficiently on the highway with reduced fuel consumption, but offer more than 600 horsepower whenever the driver calls up its tremendous power reserve.”

The heart of the 2015 Corvette Z06 is the all-new LT4 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine, expected to deliver an estimated 625 horsepower (466 kW) and 635 lb-ft of torque (861 Nm). To balance performance and efficiency, the LT4 leverages the same trio of advanced technologies introduced on the Corvette Stingray: Direct injection, Active Fuel Management, or cylinder deactivation, and continuously variable valve timing.

To maintain the Z06’s mass and performance targets, the LT4 engine was designed with a more-efficient, morecompact supercharger. Even with its integrated supercharger/intercooler assembly mounted in the valley between the cylinder heads, the engine is only about one inch (25 mm) taller than the Corvette Stingray’s LT1 engine – while delivering nearly 37 percent more horsepower and 40 percent more torque.

These technologies – combined with the fuel-efficient multi-speed transmissions, aerodynamic design and lightweight construction – help make the new Z06 surprisingly fuel efficient.

The new 1.7L Eaton R1740 TVS supercharger spins at up to 20,000 rpm – 5,000 rpm more than the supercharger on the Corvette ZR1’s LS9. The rotors are shorter in length, too, which contributes to their higher-rpm capability – and enables them to get up to speed quicker, producing power-enhancing boost earlier in the rpm band. That boost is achieved more efficiently, thanks to a new, more direct discharge port that creates less turbulence, reducing heat and speeding airflow into the engine.

“The supercharged LT4 engine delivers the greatest balance of performance and efficiency ever in the Corvette,” said John Rydzewski, assistant chief engineer for Small-Block engines. “It is one of the world’s only supercharged engines to incorporate cylinder deactivation technol-

The LT4 engine also has several unique features designed to support its higher output and the greater cylinder pressures created by forced induction, including: • Rotocast A356T6 aluminum cylinder heads that are stronger and handle heat better than conventional heads • Lightweight titanium intake valves and machined connecting rods for reduced reciprocating mass • High 10.0:1 compression ratio – for a forced-induction engine – enhances performance and efficiency and is enabled by direct injection • Forged aluminum pistons with unique, stronger structure to ensure strength under high cylinder pressures • Stainless steel exhaust headers and an aluminum balancer that are lighter than their LT1 counterparts • Standard dry-sump oiling system with larger cooler capacity than Z51; used with dual-pressure-control oil pump. <

Shakira said herself that her “Hips Don’t Lie,” and her new body is quite a testament to that truth. After giving birth to her first child in 2013, the singer has come back into the spotlight with achievements such as a new album and a toned physique that echo the recent success of her personal life. Now that Shakira is enjoying motherhood and a loving relationship with soccer star Gerard Pique, she finds that she is worrying less about her outward appearance and simply focusing on maintaining her health. Even though she is fit as ever, Shakira has given up trying to work toward a thinner body and has chosen to accept her natural size. She believes that a healthy body is more beautiful than a thin body and has stated that her boyfriend, Pique, finds that a fuller yet flattering figure suits the unstoppable singer.

HUGH JACKMAN Ever since Hugh Jackman’s debut as the Wolverine in the X-Men series, he has maintained the role of one of Hollywood’s hottest stars with a body to match. Jackman is in better shape than ever as he has been preparing for the upcoming X-Men film set to be released later this year. The Australian actor dedicates himself to a rigorous workout routine, complete with intense strength training and constant cardio workouts. In addition to these weekly exercise programs, Jackman also stays in shape by putting on his dancing shoes, as 2014 will mark his return to Broadway. With these major career milestones awaiting Jackman in the near future, it is no wonder how the actor keeps his focus and motivation for sustaining a ripped body.

AMBER HEARD Amber Heard may be one of the hottest young stars in Hollywood, and her gorgeous body even won over Johnny Depp, to whom she is rumored to be engaged. Although the blonde bombshell’s toned body may seem effortless, she is quick to make known that her physical shape is hard earned and well deserved. Heard says that she watches what she eats and drinks, while working out regularly. She enjoys running, playing tennis, and taking Pilates classes, and the results are well worth the time spent exercising. As a naturally curvy girl, Heard believes that any woman can achieve the body she desires with focus and determination. She has watched her own body transform with a healthy diet and daily exercise, and she encourages other women to do the same.

NOT SO HOT: CHANNING TATUM Although voted People’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2013, Channing Tatum appears to have recently taken a break from his regular fitness routine. The Magic Mike star has not been keeping up with the diet and exercise regime of his wife, who has bounced back from the birth of their first child with a trim post-baby body. Tatum admits to being a binge eater while in-between roles of his high-grossing movies, so perhaps this is just a phase for the usually buff actor. He states that he sometimes fluctuates between 25 to 30 pounds when not filming, and he often feels like a “fat kid” with a hearty appetite on the inside. Due to this being Tatum’s first year of fatherhood, it seems that he may deserve a respite from his usual strenuous workout routine. Tatum reveals that he has greatly enjoyed spending his time with his daughter, Everly, as well as allowing her to become the main focus of his life.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE Over the past few years, Jennifer Lawrence’s acting career has skyrocketed with the success of The Hunger Games movie franchise, but judging by her figure, it is evident that her recent rise to fame is due to her stellar acting talent, rather than her hot body, or lack of one. However, Lawrence’s body shape does not faze her, as she believes that society views the outward appearance of the modern female with an unnecessary importance that she hopes to counteract with self-confidence. When preparing for The Hunger Games, Lawrence even refused to lose weight for the role, stating that her young audience deserves a realistic role model to which they can relate. Lawrence may not be the average Hollywood starlet, but this does not signal her inability to champion with the best in the business. Many fans applaud Lawrence’s bold and independent ideals, even if she does not look the best in a bikini.<

options are yogurt, cheese, nuts, and beans. You could use them in your main meals or for your snacks. Protein will keep you more satisfied than carbs or fats, and it encourages fat burning. You get the best of both worlds. • Exercise: Yes, you may have a ton of excuses to avoid exercise, but it is essential to get your dream body. Exercise makes you look good and it makes you feel good. So throw away the excuses and get moving. And not having a gym membership is definitely NOT an excuse. 1. Do cardio at least 3 times a week: You have many options; you could walk, jog, run, dance, jump, swim, or whatever gets your heart rate going. Choose an activity that you like, and burn calories while you have fun.

HELLO SUMMER BODY! By Stephani Nardulli

> Yes ladies, one of the most dreaded times of the year is just around the corner: Summer - or should I say BIKINI SEASON? This may sound a little intimidating if we haven’t hit the gym in a while; the truth is a lot of women panic just at the thought of wearing a bikini, but it shouldn’t be that way. We want to feel confident, have fun, relax, and just be carefree. You may think it’s too late to get fit just in time for the season, but you’d be surprised to see how much you and your body can change in just a few weeks. With a lot of commitment and determination you’ll look fabulous in no time. I know how much you want to look great this summer, and that’s why I have gathered a few tips that will make you turn heads all season long. Eat healthy: I know, this sounds overrated and obvious; but if you really want that hot body you’re going to have to watch what you eat. • It’s recommended that you eat at least 5 small meals a day. If you thought starving

would be the solution to your problem, think again. Eating constantly throughout the day will boost your metabolism and it will keep you from overeating. You will feel energized and always ready for a good workout. So basically you have to eat to lose weight, isn’t this great? • Eat a snack in between meals. So your day will go like this: breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner. There are many options to choose from, but remember to avoid sweets as much as possible. • Fill up your plate with color. Go for fruits and veggies instead of processed food – your worst enemy. Choosing colorful veggies will make your food more pleasant to look at and you’ll want to eat it. The idea is to eat something you like instead of forcing yourself. • Drink lots of water, and avoid sweet drinks. Drinking water has innumerable benefits, and cellulite reduction is just one of them. That’s right ladies, if you want to reduce the appearance of cellulite you must drink lots of water. • Add protein to every meal. Some good

2. Don’t be lazy, be smart: Take the stairs instead of the elevator, park farther from the entrance and walk faster. Take every opportunity you can to burn more calories. 3. Do not be afraid to lift weights. Many women have the believe that lifting weights will bulk them up and make them look manly, but in reality weights will sculpt your body to make you look toned and fabulous; or do you want to look skinny and flabby? - I didn’t think so. 4. Get Organized: In order to be successful and reach your goal you must have a plan of action; this will keep you focused and on track. • Set a realistic goal. Decide how much weight you want to lose and commit to it. • Track your progress. Take a picture at the beginning of the process, and at the end of every week until you finish. This will allow you to see the changes that you cannot see in the mirror and it will keep you motivated. • Meal prep. Choose a day or two to prepare your meals for the week. So if you’re a busy person, all you have to do is grab your meal and go. As always, consult with your doctor before starting any new diet and exercise regimen.<

REPUBLIC Why we love them and celebrate their return to the music scene! By Riesa Pascal

> It’s hard to believe it has almost been one year since OneRepublic unleashed their third studio album onto the pop-rock music world. With the release of Native came one of the biggest hits in recent months, “Counting Stars.” OneRepublic fans across the globe were ecstatic upon learning the band had brought an end to their three and a half year hiatus. With a dwindling lack of genuine musical talent today, the music industry can’t afford for a band like OneRepublic to be taking breaks! OneRepublic formed in Colorado Springs, Colorado and first burst onto the music scene in 2007 with the release of their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud. Their lead single off the album was the widely acclaimed hit “Apologize.” As if the unforgettable tune wasn’t catchy enough, American rapper Timba-

land remixed the song and released it on his own album, Shock Value. The remix quickly became a global hit. It peaked at number one for eight consecutive weeks on the Billboard Pop 100 chart and reached the top three of the Billboard Hot 100. The song sold five million copies in the United States alone and was a massive hit internationally, reaching number one in sixteen countries. The success eventually led to the band’s first Grammy nomination for best pop performance in a group or duo. Other recognizable hits off the album included “Say (All I Need),” “Mercy” and “Dreaming Out Loud.”

ing Out Loud, OneRepublic began working on their second studio album, Waking Up. If there was a doubt in anyone’s mind that OneRepublic was going to be a one-hit wonder, Waking Up quickly and thoroughly erased that notion. The album was released in November 2009 and peaked at number 21 on the Billboard 200. Their first single off the album “All The Right Moves” peaked at number six in the US Billboard Adult Pop Songs chart. Their second single, “Secrets” peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Adult Top 40 chart while “Good Life” reached number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.

OneRepublic has cleverly mastered a unique combination of rhythmic beats and anthemic lyrical writing leading almost every song to become an instant classic. Following the success of Dream-

career in a variety of areas in the industry. In addition to his work with OneRepublic, Tedder also has an independent career as songwriter and producer for various artists. The impressive list includes Adele, Beyoncé, Colbie Caillat, Maroon 5, Demi Lovato, Ellie Goulding, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Lopez, Gavin DeGraw, Gym Class Heroes, One Direction, James Blunt and many others. Tedder was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma and raised in a Christian household. Tedder and his wife, Genevieve, have a threeyear-old son, Copeland Cruz. If their toddler is anything like his father, you can be sure little Copeland has already begun following in the musical footsteps of Tedder. At the age of three, Tedder began to learn the piano with the encouragement of his father who was also a musician and his mother, a schoolteacher. Four years later, he started singing for the first time. At twelve, Tedder began improving his vocals by imitating some of his favorite artists such as The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and even Sting. For the next five years, Tedder would continue to sing at least two hours every day at home, through church, school, and personally formed groups. With the formation of OneRepublic in 2003, all of Tedder’s hard work paid off and for the first time he was globally recognized as the incredibly talented artist that he is.

OF COURSE NO BAND IS COMPLETE WITHOUT A TALENTED FRONTMAN AND ONEREPUBLIC’S HAS GOT IT ALL.

On March 22, 2013, OneRepublic released their third and most recent studio album, Native. It became the band’s first top ten album on the Billboard 200 and their highest charting album to date, peaking in the coveted top five at number four. Native’s lead single, “If I Lose Myself” hit top ten in several countries. The album’s third single, “Counting Stars” reached top ten placements in nine countries and top five in seven. In the UK, “Counting Stars” topped the charts and became their highest UK peak to date. Back home in the US, the hit peaked at number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 becoming their highest charting hit since “Apologize.” OneRepublic has got it all. Great hits, incredibly talented musicians and an amazing frontman who not only writes his own material but is also pretty easy on the eyes! The band truly deserves every success and accolade they’ve earned since their inception over a decade ago—as well as all the praise they’re sure to be receiving now. If you haven’t heard Native yet, be sure to pick up your copy today and check out this incredible band that we can’t help falling for! <

3: WATCH FOR BEACH HAZARDS Although the beach is a great place for your dog to exercise, the natural environment poses several dangers. Do not allow your dog to drink the ocean water, as sea salt is a gastrointestinal irritant that can cause dehydration and vomiting. In case of cut paws from rocky terrain, bring a first aid kit including ammonia, peroxide, cotton balls, and bandages. It’s always best to keep your dog on a leash especially when entering the water; you don’t want your dog to be carried away with the tide/surf. Also, a life jacket can be a lifesaver, and always remember that puppies should stay on the shore at all times.

4: MASTER CALLING COMMANDS

5 SAFETY TIPS FOR BEACH BOUND PUPS By Courtney Caggiano

> The beach is one of the best places for you and your pup to have fun in the sun, but it is also an unfamiliar environment for which your dog should be prepared. Here are five important tips to help keep your best friend safe in the sand and sea.

1: AVOID OVERHEATING With the Florida heat that often arrives well before the summer months, it is vital to ensure that you protect your pooch from the dangers of overheating. You should bring plenty of cold water, preferably bottled and in a cooler with ice, as well as a doggie bowl for easy access. Also, set up a shady retreat for your dog with an umbrella and a blanket to protect his or her sensitive paws from the scorching sand. If you have a short-muz-

StyleToMe.com

zled breed, such as a Pug or a Pekinese, it is important to remember that these dogs overheat faster than others.

2: PREVENT SUNBURN If you decide to bring a short-coated or fair-haired breed to the beach, it is necessary to take precaution against potential sunburn. You can purchase sunscreen made specifically for dogs, but be sure to avoid brands that contain zinc or fragrances, which can be toxic if ingested. Apply sunscreen to any area that may be vulnerable to direct sunlight, and reapply after every dip in the water. Even if your dog has a thick coat, you should apply sunscreen to the nose and ears. For hairless dogs, keep a T-shirt on hand for extra protection.

Once at the beach, your dog may want to romp around in the sand, and this is a healthy release of energy that should be allowed. In order to keep your dog safe while off-leash, have a calling command to which he or she responds. Before you take your dog to the beach, teach and practice this command where there are little distractions. If you are unsure as to your dog’s adaptability of this skill, bring a long leash so he or she can take part in the fun while staying securely nearby.

5: FOLLOW BEACH RULES It is important to pay attention to the recommendations of the specific beach you are visiting, as these will help ensure the safety of your dog. These rules may include supervising your dog, following the leash laws, making sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations, and keeping your dog’s ID tags on at all times. Always remember that your dog is probably not the only pet at the beach, and these rules will help to keep him or her safe from dogs that may be more aggressive or ill behaved. <

48 - COCKTAIL HOUR

> When most people in Florida think about rum, thoughts of pirates jump into their heads. It is true that our state has a history of pirates and their stories go hand in hand with rum drinking swashbucklers. Why we don’t have those type of pirates sailing up and down our coasts we do still have rum. Rum has been kind of pushed to the back of most bars in recent years as most patrons have turned to vodka, gin, old world liquors and whiskies. I feel that rum is about to push back. This is just a feeling on my part but I believe that rum is poised to be the next big thing in the craft spirit world.

RUM

The Next Trend to Hit the Craft Movement? By Travis Joiner

StyleToMe.com

There has been a series of trends that most people who are in the business have seen unfold over the past few years. Absinthe is one example that shot out of the gate at first and craft bars and bartenders fell in love with the mystery behind it. Other spirits were quick to line up and become the trendy thing to have and to be seen having. Rum got lost in the shuffle but it seems to this writer that it will soon have a voice to be heard from coast to coast. This is a trend that I think Floridians can really get behind. We already have it instilled in our history so let us be one of the first to push this crafty trend to the front of the line. I know there are several distillers in Florida already making some great rums right here in our own backyards. A little research will lead you to such rums as Wicked Dolphin, Siesta Key, Miami Club and Key West First Legal Rum being distilled, quite well, somewhere close by. As far as craft bartenders playing and creating cocktails with rum as the main ingredient, they are coming around. The spirit really allows a bartender to be creative and tickle your taste buds in many different directions. Silver rum is a nice clean canvas on which a craft

spirit aficionado can create different masterpieces from sweet to fruity or to smoky and bold. Spiced rum is one that I think gets looked over. Do yourself a favor and seek out a spiced rum that doesn’t have an overly brash pirate on the label and you will be pleasantly surprised. For those of you who love their whiskies neat or on the rocks will not be disappointed either. Ask your local barkeep to introduce you to their selection of aged rums and you might not head back to the bourbon. Rum also shines in many different locales and bars. Images of a frozen tall concoction nestled next to your chaise lounge poolside cooling you off in the hot Florida sun? It has rum I bet. The pool bar will be stocked with all kinds of fun rum based drinks meant to cool you down during the day or heat things up at night. Out downtown for a nice dinner with your peers or friends? Hit the bar first and find a local rum or one you have not heard of before and have them introduce it to some ice and ginger beer. Just got finished with a big business dinner at a four star restaurant? Celebrate with aged rum and if they have them, one big ice cube. Whatever the situation I guarantee rum can be the star if you give it a chance. Trends in this industry have been changing constantly and one must stay in tune with the industry to keep up. I say it is time for Florida to help start a trend that others will grab hold of. I believe that trend is rum. As I said before, seek out the local rums when you can or find a bartender who knows how great an aged rum is and let them introduce you to a whole new world. However you choose to introduce rum to the glass that is in front of you, do it! As for me I am off to the beach to search for buried treasure at my favorite bar, A Dark and Stormy in hand. Cheers <

PEPERONCINO By Riesa Pascal Photographers: Ruben Santa-Cruz & Jonathan Diaz

“BENVENUTI NELLA MIA CUCINA! WELCOME TO PEPERONCINO, MY KITCHEN!” BARBARA ALFANO > As Floridians, there’s a large ocean and over 5,000 miles separating us from the beautiful country of Italy. As you can imagine, that can sometimes make it a little tricky to find authentic Italian cuisine here in Orlando. Those of Italian descent are fortunate to have the experience of authentic Italian dining right in their very own home! However, the rest of us are left with large chain restaurants who despite claims of authenticity, mostly aim to serve food catering to the average American palate. So what is someone with a craving for real Italian supposed to do? When flights to Italy are out of the question, that’s when Peperoncino comes in. A dining experience at Peperoncino is a culinary journey to a little kitchen in Calabria, Italy. There awaits a loving ‘family’ of Italians who would love to have you at their dinner table to enjoy a diverse meal that satisfies all your senses. I discovered this kitchen for myself during a four-course meal at the establishment, which has forever changed my views on genuine Italian cuisine. The first words that come to mind to describe Peperoncino are ‘hidden treasure.’ It is the literal embodiment of ‘blink and you’ll miss it.’ The small restaurant is a diamond tucked away behind Sand Lake Road’s famous Restaurant Row. Despite its size, when we arrived for dinner the restaurant was packed with families,

couples and friends who had traveled from near and far to dine at this familyoriented restaurant. Designed with an open kitchen that lays parallel to the guest seating, it really does feel like you’re eating a home-cooked meal in your mother’s kitchen. No matter where you’re seated, Peperoncino owner and Executive Chef, Barbara Alfano is always visible as she and Chef Danilo Martorano work on exquisite culinary creations. Wait times can be expected most evenings, but reservations are welcomed and encouraged. No matter how busy they get though, you are always guaranteed to find Chef Alfano with a bright smile on her face. The kind of smile that can only come from someone who is doing what they love and living out their dream every day they arrive at work. This is exactly how I found her on the evening of our own dining experience. My companions and I chose the farthest table in the rectangular shaped room and ended up next to a large window overlooking Peperoncino’s sunny outdoor patio. Behind me was a colorful shelf stocked with various Italian groceries and retail products that are for sale to anyone wishing to take a little piece of Italy back to their own kitchen. Directly in front of me was bar seating and an extravagant display of wines. Chef Alfano calls Peperoncino a kitchen and she

stands by it in every way, even her décor. There were no ornate chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, nor flashy china and over-the-top furniture. Rather little details such as abstract wall art, Italian and American flags proudly displayed in a small vase and the barely-there hum of soothing Italian music ensured that small kitchen feel remained. Everything came together to create an intensely lively atmosphere, buzzing with energy and excited chatter. The mood was officially set and we were more than ready to dive into our authentic Italian dining experience. Peperoncino prides itself on its everchanging and constantly evolving menu so we were excited to find out what was on the menu for our dinner. We started with a round of specialty starters or the anitpasto course. First on the plate was grilled octopus. I’d be lying if I said I was an adventurous eater so I’ll be honest and admit that my initial reaction to the idea of eating octopus was a little hesitant. Fortunately I gave it a try and the dish actually went on to become one of my favorite meals of the night. Garnished with crispy caramelized speck and cream of cannellini beans, the octopus had a smoky charbroiled taste, but retained a soft texture that went down perfectly with every bite. After the octopus, we received a sampling

“ORLANDO’S MOST AUTHENTIC ITALIAN KITCHEN!” ORLANDO STYLE MAGAZINE of Peperoncino’s fried “stuzzicheria” or finger foods, which came in the form of eggplant and lasagna croquettes, fried pecorino drizzled with honey and spicy peperoncino flakes, and Sicilian olives stuffed with Gorgonzola cheese. The only word I can use to describe the croquettes is heavenly. Upon first bite, you expect them to have a deep fried taste, but to our surprise they were incredibly light and moist on the inside despite the outer crunch. The accompany burst of spices in every mouthful was magical. The amount of spice and intense flavors introduced within just this first course was a pleasant surprise. The starters were paired with a glass of Soligo Prosecco Brut, a sparkling white wine that was refreshing, allowing us to cleanse our palate before our next bite to taste the perfectly blended spices all over again. Next on the culinary journey was the primi course. Chef Alfano blessed our taste buds with handmade potato gnocchi prepared with rabbit rollè ragù as well as a vegetarian option prepared sorrentina style with fresh tomatoes, basil, olive oil, and fresh mozzarella. The vegetables felt like they had been plucked right out of your mother’s garden and the exquisitely prepared potato gnocchi was the best I’ve ever had. Its minimal amount of spice was a striking contrast to the

pounding of flavor that came with the succulent rabbit rollè ragù. This course was perfectly paired with a tall glass of Igreco Catà Rosso, a pure Gaglioppo red grape only found in Calabria, Italy. My favorite course was the secondo, rabbit confit. Confit was the preparation of the rabbit and consisted of slowly roasting the rabbit legs in olive oil. The dish was served with balsamic dressed potatoes and pecorino spinach, and Gorgonzola cheese zeppola. It was absolute perfection and an impeccable precision in the variety of contrasting, yet complimenting flavors. I find that Americanized Italian food tends to say, “this is the flavor and it’s the only flavor you’re going to taste as you eat your meal.” At Peperoncino, every single bite introduces your mouth to a new flavor and spice. The secondo was paired with a glass of Cirò Classico, from the Librandi Cantina also in Calabria. This wine had a stronger fruit presence than the Igreco and a subtle, yet appropriate hint of bitterness to it. After a whole course of unique and distinct flavors, it was interesting to return to something familiar when it came to the dessert. Our final course included a sampling of the “cuore caldo al peperoncino “and the “biscotti e crema.” The first was a warm center dark chocolate with mascarpone cream and the second

was a portion of Italian cookies drenched in cherry liquor, layered with chocolate and vanilla pastry cream. The dessert wine was the sensual bracchetto d’acqui from the Marenco Cantina in Piemonte and my companions and I all agreed it was our favorite of the evening’s wine pairings. It’s sweet; yet refreshing flavor was the perfect compliment to the rich, dark chocolate. That decadent dessert alone was worth coming back to Peperoncino for! PERIODONTAL DISEASE LANAP treats gum disease without the cutting or stitches involved with traditional surgery

> Periodontal disease is a serious, ongoing bacterial infection. Toxins produced by the bacteria in plaque irritate the gums. In addition, the toxins can stimulate a chronic inflammatory response in which the body in essence turns on itself. In time, the tissues and bone that support the teeth are broken down and destroyed.

Patient above after whitening, orthodontics & periodontics treatment.

Traditionally, periodontal disease was treated surgically with incisions and stitches. Although this technique is effective, patients were often left with severe pain, long teeth, and cold sensitivity. Fortunately, there is new technology available. Periodontal disease can now be treated with lasers through a technique called Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP). LANAP treats gum disease without the cutting or stitches involved with traditional surgery. The laser fiber gently removes harmful bacteria and diseased tissue from the gum pocket. Next, the dentist can locate and remove any plaque and tartar from the teeth. Finally, the laser is used again to seal the healthy gums back to the roots. Because the treatment is minimally invasive, LANAP

not only shortens treatment time from months to weeks, but also can help to significantly reduce patient discomfort. The benefits of LANAP include: • No cutting and no stitching • Minimal discomfort during and after the procedure • Fewer dental visits to complete treatment • Faster recovery time. Usually within a few hours you can be back to work and on your normal routine. Because this is a very specialized procedure not every practitioner can utilize the LANAP laser. Less than 1% of all dental practitioners are certified LANAP providers. Our team has successfully treated hundreds of patients with the LANAP technique. Through this advanced technology, we have saved teeth that have been considered “hopeless”, ultimately restoring health and confidence to our patients.

WHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS? – JONATHAN A. HIGGINS, M.D. veins, which connect the superficial and deep veins.

Arteries take blood from your heart to the rest of your body and veins return blood back to your heart. Varicose veins are swollen veins seen through the skin. They often look blue, bulging, and twisted. Varicose veins can cause aching and feelings of fatigue as well as skin changes like rashes, redness, and sores. As many as 40 million Americans, most of them women, have them. There are three kinds of veins in your legs; the superficial veins, which lie closest to your skin, the deep veins, which lie in groups of muscles, and perforating

When you are in the upright position, the blood in your leg veins must work against gravity to return to your heart. To accomplish this, your leg muscles squeeze the deep veins of your legs and feet. Oneway valves in your veins keep blood flowing in the right direction. When your leg muscles contract, the valves inside your veins open. When your legs relax, the valves close. This prevents blood from flowing in reverse, back down the legs. When you walk and your leg muscles squeeze, the venous pump works well. But when you sit or stand, especially for a long time, the blood in your leg veins can pool and the pressure in your veins can increase. Deep veins and perforating veins are usually able to withstand short periods of increased pressures. However, if you are a susceptible individual, your veins can stretch if you repeatedly sit or stand for long periods of time. This stretching can sometimes weaken the walls of your veins and damage your vein valves. Varicose veins may result. Symptoms: Symptoms include: heavy, tired, restless, or achy legs which may be worsened by

prolonged standing or sitting. Small clusters of veins in a winding pattern on your leg, or soft, slightly tender knots of veins. Sometimes, the skin on your legs may change color, become irritated, or even form sores. Risk Factors: Family history of varicose veins Obesity Lack of exercise Smoking Prolonged standing or sitting Previous DVT Female Pregnancy Management: A detailed Health History and Physical Examination is performed, and, in particular, an examination of the texture and color of any prominent veins is done. Then, to confirm the diagnosis, we perform a venous duplex ultrasound. Compression Stockings For varicose veins, we recommend conservative therapy with the use of elastic compression stockings that squeeze your veins and stop excess blood from flowing backward. In addition, we encourage leg elevation as well as walking exercises.

SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

For more severe symptoms, and failure of conservative therapy, treatment options include: Sclerotherapy Ablation Therapy Laser therapy Sclerotherapy Involves injecting a chemical irritant that scars your veins from the inside out so your abnormal veins can then no longer fill with blood. Your body will eventually absorb the veins that received the injection. Â Ablation and Laser Treatment Both techniques use a thin, flexible tube, called a catheter, inserted into a vein in the leg. Ablation uses a heater probe, and laser uses a laser fiber. Both methods use energy to destroy the inside of the vein, hence closing it. The objective is to destroy the superficial vein that is providing the source for varicose vein development.

IRS PRESSURES FOREIGN BANKS - BY MARK L. HORWITZ

> In its continuing effort to discover those who evade taxes by having unreported offshore accounts, the Justice Department is increasing its commitment to identify, investigate and prosecute those with undisclosed accounts. Last November, a New York Federal Judge authorized the Internal Revenue Service to serve John Doe Summonses on five banks to obtain information concerning U.S. taxpayers with undisclosed accounts. A John Doe Summons requires the bank to produce account information and identify U.S. account holders. It also requires that banks disclose accounts in which a U.S. citizen or resident has an interest, regardless of the name on the account. Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz, P.A. 17 East Pine Street Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-843-7733 F: 407-849-1321 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhorwitzlaw.com

While offshore accounts are not illegal, it is a crime to not report foreign income and offshore accounts to the government. The IRS usually allows people to enter the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program (OVDP) which enables people to get straight with the IRS and avoid criminal prosecution. There are limitations to entering the OVDP. Once the IRS receives records from the offshore bank, the account holder is barred from the OVDP and will be subject to criminal investigation and prosecution. The assistance of an experienced attorney is important to the successful completion of the OVDP. Anyone with offshore accounts should consider the benefits of the OVDP before it is too late to avoid criminal prosecution.<

The banks receiving the summons are: Zurcher Kantonalbank (ZKB) and its affiliates in Switzerland, Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Sons, Ltd. (Butterfield) and its affiliates in Switzerland, the Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Malta, and the United Kingdom. SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

GIVE ME A (TAX) BREAK! By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law

> Once upon a time, there was a little piece of legislation called The Mortgage Debt Relief Act of 2007. We will call it the Act. The Act essentially made a debt that was reduced, cancelled or forgiven due to a foreclosure or loan modification tax-exempt. This tax-exemption gave homeowners relief from taxes paid on the difference between the property value and the amount of the foreclosure or short sale. On December 31, 2013, the Act expired. Now, all homeowners forced into foreclosure have the additional hurdle of having to pay income tax on the debt. What does this mean for borrower who was foreclosed on? Haven’t they been through enough? Well, yes. But there may be a silver lining - otherwise known as bankruptcy. Don’t stop reading. This may sound like a horrible option to the average person, but there are some benefits! Think of it as spring-cleaning. Shedding those extra pounds for summer. A clean slate. Bankruptcy is probably one of the most misunderstood tools available to the consumer, so let’s answer some questions: Question: Doesn’t bankruptcy stay on my credit report for seven years? Answer: Technically yes. There is some (serious) history behind this. Forgiveness of debt after seven years is a biblical concept traced back to the Old Testament,

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

specifically Deuteronomy 15:1-2 (“At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release of debts.”). Coming back to present day, particularly in the wake of economic downturn and subsequent hardships, banks and creditors look to a consumer’s history of spending and annual income not much past two years after a bankruptcy. So behave for a couple of years, and you may be in good shape! Question: Will I be able to get a credit card soon after bankruptcy? Answer: Maybe. Interest rates may be a bit high and terms may not be in the consumer’s favor, but it is important to establish credit. Oftentimes it is advised to obtain a credit card with a small limit and pay it off each month after declaring bankruptcy. Question: What’s the difference between Chapter 7, Chapter 13 and Chapter 11? Answer: Chapters 7 and 13 are personal. Chapter 11 is for a corporation that intends to reorganize its debt to stay in business (think airline companies). For an individual, Chapter 7 will wipe your slate clean. No more debt. Chapter 13 is for those individuals who make a little more money and are interested in paying back some of the debt – in small portions, almost like a payment plan – to creditors. A great benefit to filing any one of these

Chapters is the creditor harassment, bills and past due notices will stop immediately after filing. Sweet relief! Question: The Act expired and now I owe income tax on the deficiency amount. I couldn’t afford my mortgage and I certainly can’t afford to pay income tax on the difference – what can I do? Answer: Bankruptcy is a great tool, however it’s not for everyone. Each individual’s situation is different, so keep in mind there are plenty of options out there. It is strongly recommended that you meet with an attorney who practices in real estate and bankruptcy in order to navigate what’s right for you. So take some time to explore the topics of bankruptcy, foreclosure and the loss of important tax-exemptions. It’s the season of change and new beginnings. And just like your closet, your finances may need an overhaul. So consult with your lawyer and let the spring-cleaning begin! <

JEFF BADGLEY Board Certified Civil Trial Lawyer > Jeff Badgley’s career as a trial lawyer was almost over before it started. “I really don’t have a story about how I always wanted to be a lawyer. After my first year in law school, I was in the top ten percent of my class, but I had no idea about what I wanted to do as a lawyer. I though seriously of leaving law school to pursue a career in teaching, where I thought I could have an impact on the way people think about the world” That changed the following year, when Jeff joined the trial team at University of Florida College of Law, where he graduated with honors two years later.

“There were no lawyers in my family and I had no exposure to lawyers and what they do. While competing on the trial team, I had my first glimpse of how trial lawyers work for fairness and justice, even in the most ordinary situations of life, such as driving a car, or visiting a grocery store. I saw that a worthy lawsuit is really just a story about justice, and that verdicts are a significant way of bringing about a correction to an imperfect world.” A successful career was off to a start when Jeff’s trial team beat longtime rival Stetson University in a regional competition, and he went on to represent University of Florida at a national competition. “In the fog of all the advertising, people can easily be misled about personal injury lawsuits and what they mean to the people and families who find themselves having to go to court to fight against powerful adversaries such as insurance companies. But when you hear the real story of how a person’s life is affected by such an event, you come to understand why they had to file a lawsuit to make things right.” Jeff was lucky to inherit a gene for story telling from his Irish ancestors. “A story brings the facts of a case to life. I try to

SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

tell a very personal story of fairness and justice that explains why my client deserves to be compensated. It’s really a very basic human impulse to want to help another human being who is in need. A courtroom is a place where people can do that, when the story makes sense, when it is truthful, and when justice is on the side of the injured person.” Jeff began his career at one Orlando’s largest law firms, representing clients in complex business and real estate disputes. After realizing that these cases almost never see the courtroom, he joined a firm that specialized in representing doctors and their insurance companies. Jeff sharpened the courtroom skills that he sought out in law school, until he achieved recognition by the Florida Supreme Court as an expert in Civil Trial Law. As a Board Certified Civil Trial lawyer, Jeff has joined a group of elite lawyers - fewer than 5% of Florida lawyers have achieved this professional credential in their area of practice. Jeff has also been recognized with an “AV” rating by the prestigious Martindale-Hubble register, a peer ranking by judges and lawyers of the highest level of professional skill and practice. In 2006, Jeff left the big law firms and made an important change in the clients that he fought for in court: “I decided that for the rest of my career, I would represent individuals and families, who deserved the same quality representation that insurance companies and large corporations demand from their big law firms. Jeff now represents a wide variety of clients in cases that range from the simplest automobile accidents, to complex professional malpractice cases. For Jeff, that is what being a lawyer is about: pursing justice for his clients, one story at a time. <

MICHAEL D. CERASA Personal Injury Attorney > Michael D. Cerasa dedicates his practice to the representation of Floridians who have suffered personal injury or have had property insurance claims improperly denied by their own insurer. Michael, a native of Massachusetts, and a graduate from The Florida State University College of Law and Clemson University, has been a practicing trial lawyer in the Orlando area for nearly a decade. Recognized as a Super Lawyers Rising Star for 2013 and 2014, and rated as “Excellent” by Avvo.com, Michael is sought out by individuals and businesses statewide for his expertise in handling a wide range of Plaintiffs personal injury, property damage, and economic loss claims. “The most gratifying part of my practice is giving people a voice where they might not otherwise have one. Too often the scales of justice are tilted in favor of large insurers, corporations, or the wealthy. I work every day to correct that imbalance.”

Michael D. Cerasa Partner 1770 Fennell Street, Suite 150 Maitland, FL 32751 P: 407-647-0090, ext. 104 F: 407-647-0092 E: mcerasa@pearsonbitman.com www.pearsonbitman.com

insurers. Michael has won several landmark rulings fighting back against insurers improperly interpreting Florida’s sinkhole laws. “I have had hundreds of clients whose claims were underpaid or improperly denied by their homeowners or business insurance company. When making a claim, insureds should always be mindful that the insurance company is not always looking out for your best interest.” Meeting the needs of small businesses along the Gulf Coast impacted by the devastating effects of the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Michael is currently representing hundreds of business claimants seeking to recovered money they lost as a result of the oil spill. “Economic activity was frozen in 2010 as a result of the oil spill. Many businesses lost money or went out of business altogether as a result of BP’s actions.”

Michael is a tireless advocate for people injured due to the negligence of others. His practice involves the representation of people injured in automobile accidents, trip and fall incidents, theme park injuries, medical negligence and nursing home negligence. “Oftentimes, clients come to me when they have suffered severe and debilitating injuries. I take my years of experience in the courtroom with me when I represent someone. My clients and the opposition know that I am willing to take a case to trial to get justice for my clients.”

When he’s not advocating for his clients in the courtroom, Michael is advocating for the rights of all Floridians in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C., lobbying for equity for all in the judicial system, for increased safety for consumers, and for transparency and fairness in the adjustment of insurance claims. Michael serves on the board of directors for the Young Lawyers Division of the Florida Justice Association, and was a prior director of the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship Board with the United States Department of Education, which provides grants to graduate students for arts, humanities and social sciences.

In addition to his personal injury practice, Michael has been at the forefront fighting for homeowners and businesses being taken advantage of by property

WADE COYE The Coye Law Firm > As a young boy growing up on a farm in upstate New York, Wade Coye learned early on the value of hard work, the importance of family, and the reward in helping others. Working with his grandfather and father, handling daily chores of a dairy farm, planting crops, and delivering the Syracuse Herald Journal every day of the year in heat, rain, or snow (literally), Coye learned that you must work hard, even when conditions are not the best.

Unbeknownst to him, such guiding principles would continue with him throughout his life and help to distinguish his law practice. Coye’s government service has included working for two United States Congressmen in both campaign and staff capacity on Capitol Hill and active duty in the United States Army, Infantry. His military experience and knowledge of government and the private sector continues to aid him in fighting for the rights of others in his law practice. He furthered his education at the State University of New York at Morrisville and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree. He then completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science at The State University of New York at Buffalo. Fulfilling a lifelong goal and having a passion to help others, Coye attended law school at the State University of New York at Buffalo, receiving a Juris Doctor, cum laude. “The law is a helping profession that you often times need to take the sum of your experiences to aid in helping others solve their problems.”

Coye was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1989 and to the District of Columbia Bar in 2008. When asked about his philosophy on working with clients he states, “It is important to take a 360 degree view of their life and understand the difficulties they face in order to tailor a solution that works well for them.” He began his legal career with a large commercial law firm where work included

handling matters on behalf of the Resolution Trust Corporation, products liability, directors and officers’ liability, and other commercial matters. In 1991, Coye started his own practice, Coye Law Firm, focused on handling personal injury, workers compensation, wrongful death, and insurance claims. He was an early adapter of computer technology and the Internet; appearing on one of the first national lists of lawyers using the Internet in 1995. His continued interest in technology led him to develop a custom database for handling client matters. The firm, whose main office is located in Orlando, has enjoyed outstanding success obtaining million dollar recoveries in catastrophic injury cases and successfully handled appeals to the First and Fifth District Court of Appeals as well as the Florida Supreme Court. Mr. Coye was recently admitted to practice and represent claimants seeking veterans’ benefits in front of the United States Department of Veteran’s Affairs. He is also admitted to practice in the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Tax Court. Coye Law Firm has now grown to 5 attorneys and handles a variety of matters including personal injury, workers compensation, social security disability, probate, and family law. The firm provides continuing representation to several area condominium and homeowners associations. So what makes his firm different you ask? He will tell you, “Our collaborative team-based approach paired with compassionate client-based service gives clients the best possibility of achieving a favorable result.” Mr. Coye, his wife, Joan and five children make their home in College Park. In his spare time, as an instrument rated private pilot, he enjoys flying and traveling with his family. <

MICHAEL T. GIBSON, ESQ. Auto Justice and Personal Injury Attorney Michael T. Gibson, Esquire Michael T. Gibson, P.A. 839 N. Magnolia Ave. Orlando, FL 32803 P: 407-422-4529

> “Family First” is a motto that Auto Justice Attorney Michael T. Gibson not only lives by, but is deeply rooted in his firm’s corporate culture. Michael was inspired to open his Orlando personal injury law firm after experiencing his own family’s struggle following a terrible car accident. His mother was involved in a head-on collision, leaving her with chronic pain and nerve damage. He witnessed her endure medical procedures, painful injections and ongoing physical therapy. The accident took its toll on the entire family, emotionally and financially. When all hope was lost, a dedicated and talented personal injury attorney fought for her and the family when it seemed no one else would. Her attorney listened attentively to the family’s needs and advocated passionately in what became a hotly contested case. Ultimately, two settlements were obtained and justice was achieved. This inspired Michael and showed him that an effective attorney can make a powerful difference by restoring hope when there was none. At that moment, Michael made a vow to fight for individuals and their families who had fallen on hard times through no fault of their own- people who were ignored by the insurance companies that promised to protect them. “Family is the guiding principle that has grounded and guided my law practice. It is the foundation behind our law firm and is the very reason I do what I do, and why I represent consumers and accident

victims against big insurance companies in their family’s time of need,” states Michael. Michael was born and raised in Clearwater, Florida. He moved to the Central Florida area to attend the University of Central Florida. Upon graduation from UCF, he attended law school at The Florida A&M University College of Law, where he graduated in the top three percent of his class. During law school, he served on the Law Review and as the Head Teaching Assistant to the Academic Skills Program. He also served as a County Court Mediator and a Certified Legal Intern for the Orange County Public Defender’s Office, where he tried felony jury trials. Upon graduation, Michael practiced with one of the largest personal injury firms in the Central Florida area for several years before starting his current firm. Today, Michael devotes his entire career and law practice to representing injured people in auto accident and injury cases against large insurance companies, and negligent drivers. Over the course of his career, Michael has obtained over $16,000,000.00 in cases involving auto accidents, nursing home abuse, slip and falls, negligent security, insurance disputes, and consumer litigation. He is the author of several consumer guide books, including “Your Complete Guide to Florida Auto Accident Claims” and the “The New PIP,” all of which are offered for free on his website, www.autojusticeattorney.com. Additionally, he is a frequent lecturer on Florida auto

accident claims and Florida auto insurance. Most recently he was recognized as a Rising Star in the practice area of Personal Injury: Plaintiff in Super Lawyers Magazine 2013. In addition to his professional achievements, Michael is passionately involved in the community. He devotes his time and financial support to a variety of causes. He created “The Michael T. Gibson Scholar Athlete of the Month” program, which recognizes and provides college scholarships to Central Florida’s top high school seniors who excel in academics, athletics and community involvement. He is also an avid supporter of his own High School, Clearwater Central Catholic, where he is a member of the coaching staff. He also coaches and sponsors his son’s youth soccer team. The firm recently became a corporate sponsor of the Orlando Solar Bears and has partnered with the Bears to host a promo night honoring Orlando’s first responders, including police officers, firefighters and ambulance personnel, for their service with free tickets to attend a hockey game with their families at the Amway Center. Michael is married to Jennifer MartinezGibson, who helped him start the law firm and is an integral part of the practice. Together, their work is dedicated to putting families first and the principal transcends their home lives as well. They reside in Orlando with their two beautiful children: Brady (4) and Emery (10 months). <

SARAH R. GOLDMAN Personal Injury Attorney

> Sarah Goldman is a rising star in the legal community and her journey there has been anything but traditional. Born and raised in Alaska, Sarah learned early in life the value of tenacity and dedication. Sitting in the courtroom of a high profile murder case at eleven years old watching her father, The District Attorney, destroy the child murderer’s alibi witness in what can only be described as a Perry Mason moment, sealed Sarah’s fate. Sarah was destined to be an attorney and would do whatever it took to become one. As her passion for the law continued to grow, it was only a matter of time until she was offering critiques her father would incorporate into his consistent trial schedule. “I knew at eleven years old that I was going to be an attorney and that I wanted to fight for people who couldn’t fight for themselves. Growing up with a trial attorney for a father, I was immersed in the law and relished every opportunity to learn from him and observe him in action.” Sarah says. On the fast track to reaching her life goal, Sarah excelled in her studies, finishing high school early and completing college in less than four years. Not surprisingly, she followed in her father’s footsteps, graduating from Southwestern University School of Law after participating in the esteemed SCALE program, a two year accelerated J.D. program in Los Angeles, California.

on to work for a large Florida based civil defense firm. While there, she represented and defended many Fortune 500 companies and major insurance companies in civil litigation before becoming a plaintiff’s personal injury attorney. “I think everyone has a passion for something in life. For me it has always been helping others. For years I defended multi-billion dollar corporations and insurers from those they had injured. I learned a lot but felt unfulfilled. Now I represent those who have been injured because of someone else’s neglect and I enjoy giving a voice to those who need it most. I am doing what I love.” Sarah displays the perfect balance of compassion and advocacy. She prides herself on being available to her clients and understands the struggles of being an accident victim. While she knows that in many cases, no amount of money will compensate an injured person, Sarah fights hard to make sure that her clients get just compensation. Sarah’s passion and dedication is noticed by more than just her clients. For the last two years, Sarah was voted by her peers, fellow lawyers on both sides, as one of the top attorneys in the State of Florida. <

PAUL C. PERKINS, JR. Personal Injury & Wrongful Death

CELEBRATING A 100 YEAR LEGACY OF SERVING THE PEOPLE OF FLORIDA > Paul C. Perkins, Jr. has been the beneficiary of a very proud legacy of legal service to the people of Florida. This year will mark the 100 year anniversary of the day Paul’s Great Uncle, Daniel Webster Perkins was admitted to practice law in the state of Florda. D.W. Perkins was the first African American lawyer to be permitted to select white jurors in Jacksonville, and in 1915 he pioneered the inclusion of African Americans on juries throughout the state. D.W. Perkins served the people of Florida, literally until the day he died in 1972, at 96 years old, sitting at his desk in his office. He has been listed as one of the 100 most influential Floridians of the last century. Paul’s father, Paul C. Perkins, Sr. was admitted to practice law in Florida in 1950. His first job was working along side his uncle, D.W. Perkins, in Jacksonville, until he moved to Orlando in 1951. Early in his career, Perkins served as co-counsel with Thurgood Marshall and Jack Greenberg of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, and defended four African American young men who were accused of raping Norma Padgett in Lake County, Florida. Paul C. Perkins, Sr. served the community of Central Florida as an advocate for civil rights and justice, as well as a business man and philanthropist. He died of cancer in 1985 in Orlando.

court. In 1991, six years after his father’s death, Paul was admitted to practice law in Florida. For over 20 years, Paul has tirelessly represented people who have suffered injuries due to the negligence of others in Florida’s courtrooms. Paul has recently secured jury verdicts for a forklift incident that crushed his client’s foot, an automobile accident case, and a dog bite case involving a child and a Pit Bull Terrier. Paul’s belief is that every lawyer who represents the injured must be willing, and more importantly, supremely able to try their client’s case. Mr. Perkins has also negotiated substantial settlements on behalf of his clients, including the multi-million dollar settlement of a case against multiple defendants on behalf of the widow of a man who was struck dead by a vehicle when he stopped to clear debris that had been placed in the road by vandals. He strongly believes the willingness to try difficult cases in court results in much more favorable settlement offers from insurance companies. Despite his professional success, Paul’s true devotion is to his wife of 23 years and his two children. He also volunteers his time for various professional and civic organizations in Central Florida. He enjoys fishing, golf, tennis, mission work, and watching his children blossom. He is proud to be a member of a great family of Florida lawyers and hopes to live up to their great legacy. Paul’s firm is Paul & Perkins, PA, located at 3117 Edgewater Dr., Orlando FL 32804. Although becoming a lawyer was not his life’s dream or ambition, Travis always had a thirst to do something with his life that helped people. Eleven years ago Travis started a law firm that now practices in the areas of personal injury and criminal law with the vision of advocating for individuals and families in need of an attorney who is willing to fight for them against big business, insurance companies and the Government. When it comes to the area of personal injury, Travis maintains that “nowhere in the practice of law is there more opportunity to help those who are truly in need, who have been wronged through no fault of their own, and who are not going to get any relief without a lawyer who is willing to fight for their rights.”

Travis believes in the saying that trial work is 90 percent preparation, and 10 percent in the courtroom. While results matter, Travis’s clients often comment on and appreciate his personal service and attention to details. PAUL SIMON & STING Longtime friends and music legends, Paul Simon & Sting take the stage on March 16th at the Amway Center. Paul Simon’s success stems from the duo Simon & Garfunkel. Sting, prior to starting his solo career, was the lead singer and bassist of The Police. The two men first sang together at a charity benefit in New York last year and Sting said he was surprised how well their voices blended. At each concert audiences will see the musicians together as well as performing solo. March 16, 8 pm Amway Center 407-440-7000

This highly anticipated tour has fans eagerly waiting to see what shocking performance she will deliver this time around. There are sure to be some scandalous moves and barely-there outfits but Miley says “I want people to walk away saying, ‘OK, she did some things that were crazy, but at the end of the day, it was really about her voice.” March 24, 7 pm Amway Center 407-440-7000
