These past couple months have been packed with family friendly excitement and fun happenings throughout our wonderful city. If you missed any of it, fear not! We’ve got all the highlights for you, just in case you missed it. Last month, visitors to Disney Springs enjoyed a celebration of the arrival of spring and the cherry blossoms at Morimoto Asia Sakura Festival. The restaurant was decorated up to April 15 in order to showcase all of the beautiful pink blooms of the Sakura. Similar to the festivals in Japan, guests had the opportunity to attend a series of ticketed events and indulge in special menu items inspired by the Japanese cherry blossoms during both lunch and dinner.

The world’s largest bounce house ever created came to Orlando’s Bill Frederick Park from March 30-April 2! Measuring in at 10,000 square feet and 32 feet tall, The Big Bounce America is not your typical bounce house. Families walked through the doors of the inflatable castle and tested their skills on the obstacle course, the basketball courts, and the giant ball pit slide. The structure even featured a DJ booth with nightclub quality sound, lights, a dance floor, and a VIP external dome.

Every year, the Florida Film Festival showcases the best in cutting-edge current cinema and the 2018 event was no different! From April 6-15, attendees enjoyed incredible films, a mix of industry parties, a star-packed attendee list and other special events at the Enzian Theater and around Orlando. Accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the festival welcomed more than 25,000 guests each year with more than 100 visiting directors, producers and award-winning talent.

establishments, such as 4 Rivers, Cask & Larder, The Ravenous Pig, Prato and many others. On April 21, the city of Orlando was invited to come out and enjoy Arts and Drafts at the House of Blues! The free event celebrated 8 local artists as well as craft beer from Southern Tier Brewery. Attendees enjoyed live music from Mike Lynch Band and The Steve Hogie Band, as well as exciting giveaways from Southern Tier Brewing and House of Blues.

Mouths were watering across Orlando when the 2018 National Pie Championship returned to the Rosen Centre Hotel. From April 6-7, Amateur and professional pie makers from around the globe competed for top honors in dozens of different categories ranging from sweet fruits and creams to nuts and chicken pot pies. There were even gluten-free categories! Entries were crafted on site and judged based on appearance, taste, consistency, crust and overall product—yummy!

Central Florida Earth Day is an exciting day of colorful and educational exhibits and activities! This year, the free and beloved event returned to beautiful Lake Eola Park on Saturday, April 21. The family-friendly, dog-friendly, alcohol-free, and smoke-free event is now in its 13th year and remains the biggest and best Earth Day festival in Central Florida! Attendees enjoyed everything from Speakers and Environmental Education to an Earth Kids Zone and many Earthfriendly sponsors and vendors.

April 18 was the ultimate foodie festival as the 33rd Annual Taste of Winter Park returned to the Winter Park Farmer’s Market. Taste of Winter Park showcased more than 40 of Central Florida’s top chefs, bakers, caterers and confectioners as foodies across the city came out eat, drink, and be merry! All-inclusive tickets featured unlimited samples of refreshing beverages, decadent desserts and signature dishes from popular Winter Park dining

Winter Park had quite a week of the arts, culture, and fun at the 10th Annual Winter Park Paint Out! From April 22-28, twentyfive professionally acclaimed plein air artists roamed across our charming city to capture many of your favorite landscapes and landmarks with oils, water colors and pastels. The Albin Polasek Museum, Sculpture Gardens and gallery were free for the public to view all throughout the exciting week long event!

Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa: Cabana Beach Club

Players Clubhouse

During my stay at Sawgrass Marriott, I had the delight and pleasure of learning all about the rich history and exciting future of TPC Sawgrass while on a golf course tour with Executive Director of THE PLAYERS Jared Rice and PGA TOUR Manager Jen Hendrich. With a distinct design concept and continuous improvements aimed to elevate the fan experience, THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass has become one of the most prominent courses in the world. In addition to the course’s spectacular uninterrupted views, TPC Sawgrass is also notorious for its par-3 No. 17 “Island Green.”

THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

VIP EXPERIENCE

May 8–13, 2018

Spoil yourself with sophistication witness history in the making! By Sven Bode

Travelers from across the globe have long been fascinated by St. Augustine and Ponte Vedra Beach — the original America. Now known as Florida’s Historic Coast, this destination is renowned for its old-world charm and beautiful unspoiled beaches. Situated worlds away from your traditional beach vacation, a trip to Florida’s Historic Coast is guaranteed to include everything from world-class cuisine to new adventures at every turn. That being said, however, my fellow golf aficionados can attest to the fact that no trip to Northeast Florida would be complete without the PGA TOUR’s signature event, THE PLAYERS Championship at TPC Sawgrass. Originally known as the Tournament Players Championship, the event began in 1974 and was held in different states and courses until it found a temporary home at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach. It was during this time that Deane Beman, former commissioner of the PGA TOUR, envisioned building a permanent site for the tournament. In 1982, 415 acres of wooded wetlands and swamp were transformed into the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, the home of THE PLAYERS Championship. Needless to say, THE PLAYERS Championship has since become more than a must-see event for golf fans. It’s a destination for travelers from around the world to witness history in the making and the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa plays the perfect host. Recently renovated and brimming with world class amenities, the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa is the catalyst for a luxurious vacation in Ponte Vedra Beach. From refreshed rooms and suites showcasing floor-to-ceiling

windows to deluxe bedding and ergonomic workspaces, the accommodations you’ll find upon arrival are guaranteed to set the stage for a relaxing stay. When the heat picks up, guests can take a cooling dip in one of the resort’s four refreshing pools. When hunger strikes, the property boasts a multitude of outstanding restaurants that have something for everyone. Guests seeking a casual dining experience will find tasty fare and a hearty atmosphere at Alice & Pete’s Pub. Those who enjoy dining al fresco will delight in the sights and sounds of Florida’s indigenous wildlife at the American Gator Club. Guests can even hop on the resort’s free shuttle to the recently renovated private Cabana Beach Club for the laid-back ambiance and delicious American fare of Sharkey’s. My favorite dining experience came in the form of an exquisite dinner at Vernon’s, the signature restaurant of Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa. With fresh Florida seafood, masterfully cut chops, locally-sourced produce, an enviable wine list, and spectacular resort views… foodies and families all score big at Vernon’s! 17 “Island Green.” Situated on a man-made island and spanning 137 yards from tee to green, the hole has captivated fans and challenged players from around the world and is considered to be one of the most iconic holes in the game. TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass consistently welcomes the best players in the world every year, it’s not just a destination for die-hard golf fans. Every year the tournament adds fan features and experiences, including new and updated venues and views and this year is no different. At this year’s tournament, Hoptinger will present a new Bier Garden located behind the 16th hole. The garden will be open to the public and feature a wide selection of Florida’s refreshing craft beers. Over at THE PLAYERS Club, guests will witness an entirely redefined luxury golf experience. The weekly membership provides exclusive access to the clubhouse, private viewing spaces on 17 tee and 18 green, and premium food and beverage prepared by some of the nation’s top chefs and bartenders. With everything from the elevated dining experience of THE PLAYERS Club to modern takes on fan favorites, there are dining options for all tastes at TPC Sawgrass. Wine and Dine on 9 is the ideal place to enjoy a Northeast Florida sunset, with a variety of food options and a perfect wine pairing. For those who prefer something on the go, Trucks on 10 showcases some of the best local food trucks. Perhaps one of the most impressive sights on the tour was inside of the expanded and upgraded Performance Center. While there, I decided to take up Putting Analysis by Mike Shannon. An hour with Mike can improve your putting skills tremendously! I highly recommend Shannon and the V1 Golf Academy. In 1992, Shannon invented the Laser Optics Putting System that is used by countless professionals to this day. To date, Mike has worked with over 150 TOUR players and is regarded as one of the best putting instructors in the world. It is that expertise he

can share with you to improve your putting! He is a GOLF Magazine “Top 100 Teacher” and has been one of Golf Digest’s “Top 50 Greatest Teachers.” Also impressive is The Massage Envy Player Performance Center, which is a mobile fitness and therapy tractor trailer, used by players each week on the PGA TOUR and on PGA TOUR Champions. The facilities are staffed by professional physical therapists, chiropractors, and athletic trainers who assist players in rehabilitative and preventive care, as well as personal conditioning and stretching programs. I opted for the hour long Stretching Program -- went in with a bad back and came out feeling pretty good. The trailers (16½ feet wide, over 14 feet high and 60 feet long) contain state-ofthe-art fitness and therapy equipment. There are two sets of tractor trailers (4 total) that navigate the country each year, representing a tremendous investment with a goal of providing a consistent and trusted training center for professional golfers. In discussing my experience as a guest of Sawgrass Marriott and Ponte Vedra, I’d be remiss to not mention all there is to explore and do in nearby St. Augustine. Less than an hour away from the blissful relaxation of Sawgrass Marriott is the sun, fun, history and mystery of St. Augustine. For an entire day, my companions and I explored the cobblestone streets of the nation’s oldest city and enjoyed a tour of experiences showcasing the heart of historic St. Augustine. Old Town Trolley Tours helped us to make the most out of our vacation with 23 stops at more than 100 points of interest detailing all there is to know about St. Augustine’s culture and rich history. Visitors will also delight in a historic walking tour along the bayfront to Castillo de San Marcos, the

oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. The large Spanish stone fortress is now a national monument and, at over 315 years old, it’s the oldest structure in St. Augustine. From the numerous rooms that once housed soldiers and prisoners to the large interior courtyard and gun deck which offers a great view of the city, there is always plenty to explore at the Castillo and when hunger strikes, there is no shortage of tasty dining options nearby. But of course the star of this vacation was TPC Sawgrass and with the tremendous improvements and renovations completed to the stadium course ahead of the tournament, I am nothing short of excited to see THE PLAYERS Championship return to their facilities from May 8 – 13, 2018. For more information visit THEPLAYERS.com. Ask Jared or Jen how to get into the incredible 1st Class VIP Experience!

The Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company is underway in Ivanhoe Village, Florida, being only 1 out of 3 breweries in the Orlando area that can their core beers on site. Residents are in anticipation of it’s soft opening in mid-May, with founder Glenn Closson hoping to help bring the community together, take part in collaborations with other companies, and hold recurring charity and donation events. The brewery will offer 12 tap handles, 7-8 being seasonal beers and 3 being core, year-round beers. Closson also integrated some guest local ciders into the mix, providing only the best. Closson’s 3 core beers are what really make Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company stand out. The Toboggan is a Blonde Ale. Approachable and easy to drink, Toboggan Blonde is a delightful jaunt down a very well-rounded track that satisfies and entices. This one is a no-frills ride, wonderful in its simplicity and smooth character. Easy on the palate and mediumbodied, this style is a perfect jumping off point in anyone’s craft beer journey. Next up is their Joyland American IPA. Named after the iconic amusement park that brought joy to the Lake Ivanhoe area in the early 1900’s, this American IPA brings joy of a mouth watering kind. American malt and hops lead the charge and a slightly dry finish allows an ample bitterness to really shine - while being supported by a malty balance.

And last, but certainly not least, is the Bungalow Belgian Witbier. Satisfying, bubbly and light, this beer is delicately layered with coriander spice and orange peel. Hops make only a scant appearance in this yeast-driven wheat beer. A slight zing from the traditional Belgian yeast strain is more noticeable in this style. The brewery has 4 fermenting tanks on site where the beer is ultimately created through the process of fermentation. The final touches are placed on the beer by canning and packaging in kegs on site, something not too common among breweries. Visitors are welcome to bring food from local eateries to enjoy while they taste the many beers they have to offer (we expect his brewery will be a popular destination for Uber Eats drivers). On weekends, you can expect to find food trucks on property for a delicious bite to eat. Glenn Closson is a California native who made the cross-country trek to Florida in 2016. He’s an archetypal entrepreneur suffering from cenosillicaphobia (the phobia of an empty beer glass). He began brewing beer in his friend’s garage 8 years ago. The beer he made was special and everyone knew it. It pushed him to open up his first brewery in 2013, Beach City Brewery. He later sold the company with dreams of moving to a state with oranges and beerlovers aplenty: Florida.

Closson settled in Ivanhoe Village and decided to start Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company in May of 2017. There are a lot of trials and tribulations to opening a brewery and some have taken years to get open, where it has taken Closson only one — an obvious tribute to his hard work and love of the craft. The brewery couldn’t be in a better location, aiding in the reinvention of the community. Ivanhoe Village is one of Orlando’s most treasured historic neighborhoods, where coincidentally, Closson involves himself as the Vice President of the Ivanhoe Village Main Street. Along with Ivanhoe Park Brewing Co. there is something for everyone in Ivanhoe. This indie neighborhood is filled with art galleries, vintage stores, retail shops and much more, all overlooking Lake Ivanhoe. Water is an important aspect of Ivanhoe identity. Woven into the fabric of the city not only is Lake Ivanhoe, but a historic water park as well. Closson hopes to tribute to this history of the city by designing his brewery with an ode to water in mind. Ivanhoe Park Brewing Compnay 1300 Alden Rd, Orlando, FL 32803 ivanhoeparkbrewing.com

Demystifying the Ballet: Orlando Ballet Presents “Contemporary Wonders” By Yngrid Lindores

There is a notion that ballet, much like anything else, fades in and out of popularity. Previously, ballet was thought by some to be in crisis, with fresh talent and ideas struggling to break through and dance companies undergoing a difficult time obtaining funding for productions. In news sure to cause a sigh of relief: ballet is experiencing a resurgence. Ballet is not in the same place it once was during the 1980s golden age of ballet, back when Mikhail Baryshnikov was a principal

dancer and Orlando Ballet artistic director, Robert Hill was dancing with American Ballet Theater. However, it certainly isn’t in a lull. “Everyone realizes that in order to keep the art form vibrant and alive you have to continue to do these more sort of artistically, envelope pushing, forward type of ballets,” said Robert Hill.

engaged. In fact, Orlando Ballet board members, Krista and Jonathan Ledden, generously donated $100,000 to sponsor “Contemporary Wonders,” partly based on its merits as a new and inventive production. “Contemporary Wonders,” is a three part production and will showcase the talents of three local talents.

“Contemporary Wonders,” is just the kind of production to help keep the momentum going and the world of dance vibrant; it’s relevant, entertaining, and also keeps the dancers’ creativity

Three seems to be a theme as “Contemporary Wonders,” will also feature three premieres, at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, May 4 through 6, 2018. The company premiere

of Jessica Lang’s “From Foreign Lands and People,” along with two world premieres; one of which is Arcadian Broad’s “Mad Hatter’s Wonderland,” and the other is a special collaboration between renowned vocalist and “The Voice” star, Sisaundra Lewis and Orlando Ballet’s Artistic Director, Robert Hill entitled, “Love Is.” The beauty of this production is that each part will feature its own take on contemporary dance: ranging from classical pointe to more off kilter steps, for a ballet company, like tap and jazz.

THE ARTS

“There’s nothing that really connects the three pieces. They’re all completely different. I guess the only thing they have in common is that they’re all contemporary and contemporary is a very blanket term. Because, basically contemporary can mean anything’s possible, anything can happen in that genre,” said Arcadian Broad. Jessica Lang’s “From Foreign Lands and People,” will open “Contemporary Wonders,” with beautiful ballet based choreography; poetic moves evoking a sense of sophistication. Then, Orlando Ballet Artist in Residence, Arcadian Broad will present “Mad Hatter’s Wonderland,” which he both choreographed and composed. Broad’s original rendition and world premiere tells the origin story of the Mad Hatter as he journeys within Wonderland, and interestingly enough this narrative will take place after Alice leaves Wonderland. “This piece that I’m doing is like a preview, like a trailer performance to the full production. So everything is very raw and not production ready and that is the appeal for this preview performance,” Arcadian Broad said.

BROAD’S ORIGINAL

Broad’s full-length production of “Mad Hatter’s Wonderland” will debut April 2019 in “Arcadian Broad’s Wonderland: Mad Tales of the Hatter.”

RENDITION AND WORLD

“Contemporary Wonders,” will close with “Love Is,” a collaboration featuring choreography by Robert Hill and live vocals performed by Sisaundra Lewis. The piece will include songs from The Greatest Showman, such as, “Hallelujah” and “Never Enough.” “Come with an open mind. Come not needing to understand ballet beyond just sitting in the audience, and listening to beautiful music and watching beautiful creativity on the stage,” said Robert Hill.

PREMIERE TELLS THE ORIGIN STORY OF THE MAD HATTER AS HE JOURNEYS WITHIN WONDERLAND, AND INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH THIS NARRATIVE WILL TAKE PLACE AFTER ALICE LEAVES WONDERLAND.

Mr. Hill suggests those in attendance to think of the production as a lovely candy box sampler with three different tasty pieces, simply meant to be enjoyed. Mr. Broad believes audience members will leave feeling satisfied and full. Tickets for “Contemporary Wonders” start at just $19, and can be purchased by visiting: drphillipscenter. org/events/tickets/2018/contemporary-wonders/ or by calling the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts box office at 844-513-2014.

THE PERFECT MAKEUP for the perfect wedding.

Bridezilla: a bride who obsesses over every wedding detail to the utmost precision. This word typically carries a negative connotation (I mean, half the word is derived from the monster Godzilla). But your wedding is the one day in your entire life that no one can judge you for wanting everything to be perfect. From the wedding decor to the wedding cake, every detail matters. The same goes for your wedding day makeup look.

Avoid wedding day disaster by practicing your makeup look before the wedding, even if a professional is doing your makeup. Run-throughs of how your makeup is going to turn out will alleviate the stress of the unknown and will allow you to pick out things you’d rather do differently. Consider weather conditions as well. If it’s going to be a hot, humid day and your wedding is outside, use as many oil-free products as you can. You also might want to keep oil blotting sheets on hand; there’s a difference between a dewy bride and a downright oily bride. Always remember that “blushing brides” don’t just come naturally. Play up your girlish, natural flush by applying a cream blush base to the apples of your cheeks, and a shimmery, baby pink blush on top to ensure it lasts all night long.

When it comes to eye makeup, you want to keep things simple, yet eye catching. Mixing in subtle hues of purple or pink into the eye-look will keep things light and fresh. Always remember to focus the darker shadows on the outside of the eye in order to keep your eyes looking big and bright. And don’t forget to line your eyes - you want them to pop. If you want a bolder eye, use black liquid liner. If you want a subtler eye, use a brown eyeshadow or brown pencil liner. False lashes are a must on any special occasion, so make sure you know what length and volume flatters you most. (Pro tip: weddings evoke many emotions, especially in brides. Make sure your eye makeup is 100% water proof by applying Benefit’s She Laq all over your lid. The last thing any bride needs is to be resembling a raccoon, even if it is for the best of reasons). When it comes to lips, every bride will have a different preference. That being said, brides should exfoliate and hydrate their lips prior to any lip application. Next, brides need to line their lips before applying their lip of choice; it’s key to the color lasting all day. Only when that is done should a bride apply her lip of choice...and choices there are. Deciding between glossy, matte, or cream is tough; deciding the color is even tougher – good luck, brides!

white, and silky robe with “Bride” written on the back. Your bridesmaids will feel tasteful and chic wearing their robes while getting ready on your big day!

Your bridesmaids are going to be there to help you plan, de-stress, and get excited in the days leading up to your wedding. They’re going to do so much for you in preparing for your big day that it wouldn’t be right to pop them the question in anything less than a spectacular way. After all, you want them to be excited too!

The next idea is for the Wine-loving Bride. Invite your girls over for a relaxing wine night and surprise them with customized bottles of their favorite wines and start the celebration early! Your bridesmaids will love the fact that you know their favorite wine. They’ll want to keep the wine bottle forever because each one will have a personalized label with their name and the question of the evening elegantly printed upon it.

The last idea is for the Adventurous Bride who values experiences with her best girls over anything else. You can gift each of your bridesmaids with a personalized shirt repping the word “Bridesmaid,” (you, of course, will be repping “Bride,”) along with tickets to a concert of your favorite singer or tickets to an amusement park! You’ll be able to rock your shirts together while having a blast dancing and singing or riding heart-racing roller coasters.

husband to-be has popped the question to you - nerves and all. But now it’s your turn to pop the question - to your bridesmaids!

There are hundreds of ways to pop the question: you could take them to brunch, surprise them with a shopping day, or take them to get mani-pedis. Though those are all great ways to ask, the ideas here will bring out the creative and fun side in all brides that your bridesmaids will be sure to adore. The first idea is for the Jewelry-crazed Bride. I think it’s safe to say that jewelry is the perfect way to mark a special occasion (hello, that’s why engagement rings are a thing!) It’s a piece of nostalgia that will last forever – and the best part, one that you can wear! To make the piece of jewelry even more special, you can engrave it and personalize it to each bridesmaid. It can be engraved with their initials, the wedding date, or even with a cute saying like, “Thanks for helping me tie

The next idea is for the Creative Bride. You can create a gift box full of sentimental, handpicked goodies your bridesmaids will cherish forever. You know your bridesmaids best, so fill it with their must-have items. To top it all off, fill the box with tissue paper, ribbon, confetti and a handwritten note. You could even combine some of the previous ideas, putting a personalized necklace into the gift box or the bottle of wine! My personal favorite idea is for the Chic Bride. You can gift each of your bridesmaids and the maid of honor with a beautiful, silk robe that’s the color of their dresses. “Bridesmaid” and “Maid of Honor” will be elegantly written on the backs of each robe. You will be easily distinguished in a crisp,

WHAT TO WEAR.... and what not to wear to a wedding! Have a wedding to attend to this year? Not sure what to wear? We hear you. It can be stressful to pick what dress to wear to a wedding when they’re so many “rules” that aren’t clear. There’s the obvious one, do not wear white! Or off white or cream. But what about red? Black? Isn’t black worn at funerals? How short is too short? You see the confusion? Well, let us clear the air for you. Lets start with the don’ts... Denim- We all love some denim in our lives, but it is just too casual for a wedding. Even if its a beach wedding, do not be that person.

Let’s make a toast! CATHY’S CONCEPTS MONOGRAM FIVE-PIECE DECANTER SET A wonderful gift idea, this set includes a handsome 34-oz. decanter with beveled stopper and four 10-1/2 oz. whiskey glasses in a squared-off shape with weighted bottoms. $84 / Available at Nordstrom.com

Black - This is a tricky one. Black is said to be sad and depressing for a wedding. But others say that its an “old school” rule. So in fin, it depends on the wedding. What we suggest, is either where a

different color or simply ask the bride or a friend. Hoochy Mama - If you’re wearing something that you will wear to the clubs or an outfit that’s a bit on the sexy side (major cleavage, super short, animal print) then please leave it for the clubs. You do not want to get more attention then the bride on her big day. What to wear... To avoid being talked about behind your back about your outfit, choose a dress that is either 2 inches above the knee (or that general area) or floor length if its a formal wedding. Colors are ok! As long as you’re not out-doing the bride or wearing white. Patterns are ok also (houndstooth, floral, lace, polka dots, etc.), and nothing too raunchy. And you’ll be good to go!

FINE JEWELRY to pair with your gown Shimmering sparkles or dramatic statements, bridal earrings can be as important to your wedding day style as the wedding veil or headpiece. Here are some good options to choose from! Pearl earrings are a pretty touch for a classic bride. Drop earrings or dangling pearls on a chain can compliment a bohemian dress. Or amp up the look of a simple dress with chandelier earrings, colored stones or Swarovski crystal earrings. Whatever earrings you choose, this important detail will never go unnoticed.

CELEBRITY SOUP

“First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage.” Popular as the children’s song may be, the sequence of these events are becoming a little more interchangeable these days. For many Hollywood stars, getting pregnant before marriage is no longer something to be ashamed of, and while we doubt there were any gun-toting fathers at these celebrity nuptials, there was definitely a baby bump when the bride walked down the aisle!

GINNIFER GOODWIN AND JOSH DALLAS Once Upon A Time co-stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas struck up an off-screen romance in 2011 and became engaged in October 2013 after two years of dating. The actress said “I do” to her Prince Charming when she was eight months pregnant with the couple’s first son. A self-described Southern gal, Ginnifer jokes that she was literally “barefoot and pregnant” at her wedding. Best of all, they’re still going strong, which proves fairy tales do come true!

ALICIA KEYS AND SWIZZ BEATZ Despite her world-renowned fame, Alicia Keys was successful at keeping her relationship with Swizz Beatz (Kasseem Dean) out of the spotlight for quite some time! The pair became engaged in May 2010 and married only a few months later in July before welcoming their son Egypt in October of that year. The couple welcomed their second son Genesis in 2014 and to date, they remain happily in love!

JESSICA ALBA AND CASH WARREN After dating for three years from 2004 to 2007, Jessica Alba briefly ended her relationship with film producer Cash Warren. Then, in November 2007—only a few months after they got back together—her rep confirmed that the actress was pregnant. The couple were engaged in December and shocked everyone with a quiet courthouse wedding in May 2008 when Alba was eight months pregnant with their daughter Honor Marie. The happy couple have since welcomed another daughter and a son into their growing family!

MATT DAMON AND LUCIANA BARROSO After dating Luciana Barroso for two years, Matt Damon popped the question in September 2005. The everyone’s surprise, the couple were married only a few months later in a small private ceremony at New York City Hall. As it turned out, the reason for the rush was because Luciana was already pregnant with the couple’s first daughter, Isabella. The two lovebirds have since enjoyed nearly 13 years of marriage and are now also parents to daughters Stella and Gia.

KELLY CLARKSON AND BRANDON BLACKSTOCK Kelly Clarkson began dating Brandon Blackstock in 2012 and by the end of the year, the two were already announcing their engagement! Despite planning a lavish fall wedding, the couple ultimately decided to elope in a small, private ceremony on a farm in Tennessee. Eight months later they welcomed a daughter into their new family. It doesn’t take a mathematician to realize that baby River Rose was probably the reason for the elopement! Fortunately, they’re still going strong and have even welcomed a son, Remington, born in April 2016.

With its mid-mounted V10 engine and rear-wheel drive, it successfully brings the driving concept of our R8 LMS racing car to the streets.” Matt black design elements, optional films The puristic character of the new R8 variant is underscored by the matt black grille of the Singleframe and the matt

black air apertures at the front and rear of the car. The upper sideblade (of the Coupé) is finished in gloss black, the lower blade in the body color. Similar to the R8 LMS GT 4, the Coupé is available with an optional red film running over the front bonnet, roof and rear end. Inside, the driver and passenger sit in sport seats covered in leather and Alcantara. Bucket seats are available as an option. The dashboard bears an emblem “1 of 999,” indicating the limited number of units. 5.2 FSI engine – one of the last naturally aspirated engines in its segment The mid-mounted V10 engine of the Audi R8 V10 RWS produces 397 kW (540 hp). It delivers its peak torque of 540 Nm (398.3 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm. The 5.2 FSI engine accelerates the Coupé from 0 to 100 km/h (0 – 62.1 mph) in 3.7 seconds (Spyder: 3.8 seconds) and beyond to a top speed of 320 km/h (198.8 mph) (Spyder: 318 km/h [197.6 mph]). With the top closed, average fuel consumption of the R8 V10 RWS is 12.4 liters per 100 kilometers (19.0 US mpg), corresponding to 283 grams CO2 per kilometer (455.4 g/mi). With the top open, these figures are 12.6 liters (18.7 US mpg) and 286 grams CO2 per kilometer (460.3 g/mi).

Specially tuned chassis setup allows controlled drifts. The Coupé weights 1,5090 kilograms (3,505.3 lb) (without driver). 50 kilograms (110.2 lb) less than the R8 Coupé with all-wheel drive which needs additional components like propshaft, multi-plate clutch and center differential. The Spyder is 40 kilograms (88.2 lb) lighter than the R8 Spyder V10, weighing in at 1,680 kilograms (3,703.8 lb) (without driver). The axle load distribution of 40.6:59.4 (Coupé) and 40.4:59.6 (Spyder) together with chassis and handling tuning specially adapted for rear-wheel drive provide for incredibly fun driving. The chassis setup and control systems allow controlled drifts if the driver chooses “dynamic” mode in the standard Audi drive select dynamic handling system and sets the Stabilization Control ESC to “Sport”. The ESC intervenes reliably at the limit. The electromechanical power steering is completely free of torque steer and enables precise handling. The Audi R8 V10 RWS rolls standard on black-finished, 19-inch, cast aluminum wheels in a fivespoke V-design, with 245/35 tires up front and 295/35 at the rear.

IN THE KNOW

NOW HIRING HIGHLY SKILLED FOREIGNERS NEED NOT APPLY As I write this article I am in the midst of H-1B season. For those who are not knowledgeable on the topic, the H-1B is an immigration status and/or visa reserved for persons in specialty occupations. To the layperson, stating that an occupation is a specialty seems rather strange. In the immigration context, it refers to, “an occupation that requires- (a) theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge, and (b) attainment of a bachelor’s or higher degree in the specific specialty (or its equivalent) as a minimum for entry into the occupation in the United States.” Most, not all, specialty occupations relate to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields as well as fields that require post graduate degrees such as lawyers and doctors. This administration’s policies have affected the U.S.’s ability to recruit foreign talent. On April 18, 2017, President Trump signed the “Buy American and Hire American” Executive Order, which “seeks to create higher wages and employment rates for U.S. workers and to protect their economic interests by rigorously enforcing and administering our immigration laws. It also directs the Department of Homeland Security, in coordination with other agencies, to advance policies to help ensure H-1B visas are awarded to the mostskilled or highest-paid beneficiaries.” Section 2 of the “Buy American and Hire American” executive order breaks down the simple policy of the executive branch: to buy American and hire American.

Rosa Melia-Acevedo, Esq., Associate with NeJame Law & Mark NeJame jointly contributed to this article

One of the many issues with this policy, “Hire American” specifically, is its lack of understanding of a global economy. A global economy is partially considered as the international exchange of goods and services. By giving preferential treatment to U.S. workers, Citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents alike, the U.S. is ignoring the fact that in order to be a strong contender in any field, you need to know your competitions strengths and weaknesses. Having foreign workers who are specialized in a certain skill set and/or way of conducting business

with their respective home country, is invaluable. For example: a national of China with a degree in architecture whose employer’s projects are primarily based in China. This worker has the knowledge of China’s metric system, culturally influenced style in architecture, and their specific way of conducting business. Furthermore, mandating that the recipients of the H-1B, specialty occupation, status and/or visa be the “highest-paid petition beneficiaries,” deters petitioners, i.e. employers, from recruiting valuable foreign workers simply because the cost of employing them will be far too high and in turn those employers will be forced to potentially hire less qualified applicants simply because they are…American. Our neighbors to the north, or rather lucrative companies headquartered there, see the value in hiring foreign talent. Many Canadian based Tech companies have seen an increase in recruitment of workers in specialty occupations from none other than the U. S. of A. Why? What better way to do business than to hire individuals who have experience in dealing with the very company (or in this case country) you are trying to do business with? Some things cannot be taught in a classroom and be based on a degree. Some things are learned by immersing yourself in a culture and their way of life. Could the answer to our struggling economy be that intending immigrants are deterred from coming to the U.S., due to the recent policies pushed forth by some of our Nation’s leaders? Or have intending immigrants realized that their intellectual value is better served in a country that uplifts their contributions rather than diminishes them based on their country of origin? Time will only tell whether the U.S. will continue to provide our competition in the global economy with the very talent that we could cultivated and benefit from, if only, we were smart enough to realize it.

THE CLASSIC MARGARITA The famous cocktail to celebrate Cinco de Mayo Of the hundreds of creation myths for the classic margarita (who wouldn’t want the cred for this highly sought-after drink?), the most widely accepted story is of Francisco “Pancho” Morales in 1942, who formulated a drink for a customer at his bar who ordered a Magnolia, something Morales had no idea how to make. Instead of admitting to his ignorance, Morales’ bartender pride prompted him to mix together the best tequila he had, juice from his freshest lime, and a dash of his favorite triple sec. He finished the drink off with a salted rim. Needless to say, the customer loved it. Nowadays, many people add agave syrup to sweeten it up, along with a

extra slice of lime to garnish. Since that fateful day in 1942 when Morales created the classic margarita, lovers everywhere have made the margarita their own - creating everything from fruity, blackberry-grapefruit margaritas to spicy, apricot ones. Margaritas are so widely enjoyed that you can get them almost anywhere. On Cinco de Mayo they’re even more popular, with many Americans consuming a margarita (or three) to celebrate. According to the Daily Meal, margaritas accounted for 47% of cocktails sold on Cinco de Mayo and, unsurprisingly, the United States consumes twice as much tequila as the country that invented it, Mexico.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

MAN OF THE WOODS TOUR By Courtney Caggiano

Justin Timberlake aims to bring the outside in with his latest album, Man of the Woods, a collection of refreshingly rural material that marks a self-reflective moment of respite in the singer’s solo journey. On May 14 & 15, Timberlake will take his Man of the Woods Tour to Orlando’s Amway Center and Tampa’s Amalie Arena, showcasing the album that opens a window to the sounds of his rustic roots, from the echoes of distant memories to the call of life’s newer seasons—marriage, fatherhood, and finding himself. With an unfiltered, down-home style, Man of the Woods captivates the hearts of Timberlake fans in an unexpected way: while they may not find what they are looking for—his always effervescent, dance-worthy numbers—they are sure to leave with a just-as-sweet taste: the tender satisfaction of coming home. In what he calls “modern Americana with 808s,” Timberlake crafts an album that feels like the anthems of a heritage remembered, reflected upon through the lens of a man who is not quick to forget the genres that made him who he is today. Man of the Woods tracks “Sauce” and “Montana”

achieve this paradox of simplicity in subject matter and melody paired with heightened R&B and hip-hop rhythms.

quite well with rootsy, backwoods lyrics— much like a high-dollar champagne served with berries straight from the vine.

The connection between his love for his homeland and his appreciation for where life has taken him presents, for the first time in Timberlake’s career, a full-circle moment, a complete portrait to which he has hinted in his variety of past vignettes.

Perhaps the most interesting quality to the album is Timberlake’s theme of a survivalist mentality, emphasizing the importance of finding independence from worldly, materialistic lifestyles and relying solely upon nature. Songs such as “Supplies” and “Living off the Land” highlight this need for survival, revealing not just the magnitude of what the earth itself truly holds, but also the many ways in which the luxurious celebrity life has failed him.

While Man of the Woods begins with the more upbeat lead single, “Filthy,” a closer relative to Timberlake’s previous charttoppers than the other tracks on the record, the more distant-cousins of the singer’s smash hits offer a new wind of strong, inspiring thought—spotlighting the raw essentials of living that are often hidden beneath the shade of forgotten trees. Much of Timberlake’s Man of the Woods is perhaps the most experimental of his musical ventures; his exploratory songwriting not only searches for the elegance in the simple life of a southern outdoorsman—it promises the listener that this elegance is worth the while of the search. Through his profound inquiry of the finer elements of country living, Timberlake proves that his usual uptown grooves work

Man of the Woods is a comforting reminder of what remains when everything else has gone. Just as Timberlake sings about tilling the land, he also comments on working the soil of his soul,—learning the joys of nurturing the relationships of marriage and fatherhood. His wife, Jessica Biel, even makes an affectionate guest appearance on “Hers,” whispering about the significance of her husband’s flannel shirt and the ease of love without distraction. Timberlake invites you to experience this simple way of living and loving as he brings his Man of the Woods Tour to Florida.

Ingrown toenails are extremely common so you’re not the only one out there. It’s a condition in which the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft skin side of your toe. Ingrown toenails are usually caused by any foot trauma like when you bang your toes into a coffee table, if you cut your nails way to short, or when you wear shoes that just don’t fit you. This results in pain, redness, swelling and some very ugly feet to look at. But don’t throw away your feet just yet! There are ways for you to get your confidence back and show off your big toe in style. The first step, you must cut your toenails properly. Don’t let them turn into dinosaur talons. Trim and file them when you have the time. At least once every week or two. If the unfortunate event happens and you already have an ingrown toenail, immediately soak your

toes in warm water mixed with Epsom salt for about 20 minutes. This helps soften the toenail and skin by also helping to reduce any swelling. The next step would be to clean your hands properly with your clean fingers, push back the swollen skin carefully from the nail border. This will be very painful, you must only push back to were the swollen skin allows. Now, you need to cut the nail straight across with a disinfected toe nail clipper. Start with the edges of the toenail, cutting the nail from the sides, not from the middle. Your toes are finally looking normal! We are headed in the right direction just one more step. Our final step is to apply ointment onto the affected area. Follow the directions on the label to know exactly how many times to apply the ointment. Make sure to pay attention to your toes from now on. You are now ready to proudly display your toes.

LIGHT THERAPY FOR ACNE By Lauren Hough

Millions of Americans suffer from acne every year — 60 million to be exact — each person with a different story and different treatment plan. We spend billions of dollars annually at the dermatologist, being prescribed one topical treatment and pill after the other, each with a worse side effect than the last. Ever since new restrictions were put into place on the use of acne treatments such as Accutane and Retin-A, light therapy for treating acne has become extremely popular. One reason for this is that acne light therapy is much safer; there is a limited fear of side effects that researchers have seen with drugs such as Accutane (having linked it to inflammatory bowel disease, depression, and increased rates of suicide). It also avoids the drying and irritation many topical acne treatments like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid leave behind. Dermatologists have been conducting light treatments for years, but the Food and Drug Administration only recently approved some light treatment devices for consumers that can be used at home. So how does it work? In general, light therapy eliminates bacteria and shrinks oil-producing glands by using red and blue LED lights. The red light is used to penetrate into the deep layers

58

| STYLETOME.COM

of skin, shrinking the oil-producing glands that live there. The blue light eliminates acnecausing bacteria in the more superficial layers of skin. These red and blue lights are also found in sunlight, which is why many people experience better skin in the summer months when they’re exposed to more of it. These lights are best at reducing inflammation but show little effect on severe cases of acne or acne involving cysts, blackheads, whiteheads, or nodules. Because light treatments aren’t successful at getting rid of all acne, it works best when used in conjunction with a topical acne treatment. Though the at-home light therapy option is cheaper, it may not be quite as effective, according to many dermatologists. The cheapest options are with Neutrogena, who has come out with two light therapy treatments. The first is their Light Therapy Acne Mask which retails for around $30. The next is their Light Therapy Acne Spot Treatment which retails for a little over $15. The reviews are mixed, but the general consensus is that to see results, you need to use it along with a topical treatment, and the results show best when the acne is mild. Some other popular at-home treatments are LightStim for Acne ($169) and Trophy Skin BlueMD ($125). The therapy received at dermatologist offices

differ from that of at-home treatments due to the strength of the LED lights used and the area of coverage it offers, usually shining onto your face as well as neck and chest. Prices vary but typically add up due to the weekly or twice weekly visits for treatment patients endure. The upside is that they have shown more promising results than at-home treatments. The only downside to light therapy is the money spent if it doesn’t work, which to be fair, goes for any acne treatment. If you’re stuck on how to get rid of your acne, give light therapy a try, you may be in for a happy surprise. Always consult with your dermatologist before starting a new acne regimen.

EYELASHES, THE MANY OPTIONS Which lash is right for you? Every woman’s dream is to have voluminous and long eyelashes, but sadly, many of us fall very, very short of that elusive dream. There are lash serums and other tricks said to “grow” your eyelashes of course, but after hundreds of dollars down the drain, I’m not too sure if they actually work. Luckily, there are false lashes that can actually look quite natural. We compared the three most popular kinds of lash enhancements below. Eyelash Extensions Eyelash extensions are individual eyelashes that a technician applies to your own eyelashes. It increases the length, fullness, and thickness of your natural lashes. The best part? They can last on your lashes for over a month and look absolutely amazing. They also save you a lot of time getting ready - you don’t have to worry about eye makeup! The worst part? They cost quite a bit more than buying a pack of fake lashes from the drugstore.

Magnetic Lashes These eyelash enhancers have magnetic strips in each pair of lashes. Each eye has 2 lash strips, one strip to go above your lashes and another strip to go below your lashes. Once they’re in range of each other they lock together, encasing your real eyelashes in between, giving you full set of lashes in just a few seconds. They’re around the same price point as glue-on lashes - you just don’t have to mess around with all the glue! Glue-on Lashes Glue-on eyelashes have been around forever. They come in many different styles and you can trim them up to fit your desired shape and size. The best thing about these lashes are that they’re reusable and cheap. The worst part is that they can take longer to apply and sometimes the glue starts lifting throughout the day. It takes some practice to apply them correctly, but once you get the hang of them, they’re a breeze!

HERBAL TEAS & By Lauren Hugh

Their Benefits

Hearing someone say they drink herbal tea instantly puts them into the category of a “holier-than-thou” persona to most people. Maybe you imagine someone spiritual or perhaps someone so invested in their health it’s annoying. But it shouldn’t be this way. People who drink herbal tea have the knowledge you need and are taking full advantage of the benefits. There are herbal teas to help with anything you can think of — Need sleep? Yep, there’s an herbal tea for that. Need energy? Yep, there’s an herbal tea for that as well. We could do this all day but instead, I’d like to take this time to inform the misinformed in a more progressive way. Herbs, spices, and plants — everyone has read at least one article in their life about the medicinal qualities of the aforementioned. Well, that’s basically what herbal teas consist of: the infusion of herbs, spices, and plant material in hot water.

CHILL OUT.

6 Ways Stress Makes You Sick!

Stress: a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances.

I think we’re all pretty familiar with

that feeling. Hearing the constant stream of friends and family telling you to “stop stressing so much” because it’s “bad for your health” may sound like a couple of broken records to most of us, but it’s actually rooted in quite a bit of truth. Though we want think that we’re invincible, our bodies aren’t. When overrun with stress that lasts for weeks, or even years, our bodies begin to fail us in a number of ways. Whether it be stress from relationships, stress from work, stress from finances, or the thousands of other things we as humans stress over every day, stress can have us feeling as if we will never have time to take care of what really needs taking care of: ourselves. Multiple studies have shown that chronic stress, or even short bursts of stress, can lead to high blood pressure, stomach problems, breakouts, exhaustion, immune deficiencies, and weight gain. Stress may cause high blood pressure. According to staff members at the Mayo Clinic, temporary but frequent spikes in blood pressure (caused by, say, an impending deadline you forgot about) can damage blood vessels, your heart, and kidneys in ways just like it does to people with long-term high blood pressure, putting you at greater risk for heart attack or stroke. Stress may cause stomach pain. According to a Harvard Mental Health Letter, when faced with a stressful situation, digestive processes may slow down, or even stop, causing stomach pain and other gastrointestinal symptoms, such as an upset stomach, irritable bowels, cramps, and other gutrelated symptoms. Stress may cause breakouts. When stressed, our body turns our adrenal glands into overdrive, causing our sebaceous glands to release higher amounts of sebum, or oil. In turn, that oil can mix with bacteria and cause a breakout - or five. Skin also appears

64

| STYLETOME.COM

By Lauren Hough

more red and inflamed due to the expansion of capillaries and increased blood flow that follows a stressful situation occurring.. Stress may cause exhaustion. This can manifest itself in a couple different ways. Either you are unable to sleep at night due to thinking about all of the things you need to or you’re up all night doing things that need to get done, because, let’s face it, there just aren’t enough hours in the day. It may be a combination of the two, or it may be the simple fact that stress just wears your body out. Stress may cause immune deficiencies. When the body is enduring a stressful situation, stress hormones are pumped throughout the body. Though these guys are useful, they can do damage when hanging around for too long and for too often. They are able to interfere with our immune system, resulting in inflammation, reduced white blood cells, and a higher vulnerability to infection. Stress may cause weight gain. We’ve all been there: stress-eating our problems away with sugary, fatty foods. But what many people don’t know is that this overeating can become a habit. When stressed, our levels of the stress hormone cortisol rises, which in the end, causes your blood sugar to drop and the craving for those sugary, fatty foods to kick in. Stress wreaks havoc in all of our lives. It can cause a lack of motivation or focus, feelings of irritability, changes in sex drive, and social withdrawal. It can even lead to depression. I think it’s high time we start listening to those broken records telling us to “just relax” and begin putting our mental health first. To successfully manage stress, try exercising regularly, conducting relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or meditation, and making time for friends, family, and hobbies that you enjoy.

WOMEN OF THE YEAR

DR. SHARON JAFFE Infertility Specialist | Center for Reproductive Medicine Endocrinology and Infertility at Columbia University. There she worked as director of the In Vitro Fertilization Center until Orlando Health recruited her to develop a resident education program for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Under her direction as resident educator, the standardized national scores in this field soared for her young doctors, with many becoming outstanding practicing physicians in Central Florida. In 1992, she gave birth to her beautiful daughter, Sarah. The following day she was diagnosed with breast cancer. While undergoing multiple surgical procedures and months of chemotherapy, she immediately became involved with local fundraising as part of the committee for Women Playing for Time. For many years she was an integral part of helping this organization raise millions of dollars to increase awareness and provide financial support in the fight against breast cancer. She has also participated at many other events to further help others transition from a breast cancer patient to a survivor. Since joining the Center for Reproductive Medicine (CRM) in 1997, Dr. Jaffe has combined her experience as a breast cancer survivor and her knowledge as a reproductive endocrinologist to develop a fertility preservation program for all men and women diagnosed with cancer. Patients are extremely grateful when she provides her experience and support, not only as a physician, but also as a successful previous patient. She understands both the medical and psychosocial importance of timely care: a patient diagnosed with cancer will be given an expedited appointment to discuss fertility preservation options and subsequently start the desired treatment. Providing education to others has always been important to Dr. Jaffe, the middle child of a college professor and a math teacher. As a student at The Johns Hopkins University, she found time to tutor others (in between her own studies and tennis team, achieving MVP and captain) and years later she was honored as Attending of the Year in Resident Education for expertise in teaching. As an Associate Professor at University of Central Florida School of Medicine, she volunteered on a committee to develop the reproductive and endocrine module for the School of Medicine where she was also awarded Outstanding Educator.

In 1991 Dr. Sharon Jaffe relocated to Central Florida, bringing with her compassion, knowledge, expertise and surgical skills to help couples conceive. After being graduated from The Johns Hopkins University, she moved to New York City for medical training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine where she remained to complete her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Education and research go hand-in-hand. Dr. Jaffe has been involved in research since freshman year in college. She has had many publications and presentations. She is proud that she has continued clinical research in private practice, helping many families to have children that would not have been possible without financially funded in vitro fertilization. Dr. Jaffe is extremely proud to be part of CRM which has been providing patients with individualized fertility treatment options since 1985 and achieving some of the highest success rates attainable. CRM is known for providing compassionate patient care, customized treatment plans, and affordable pricing options to give patients every possible chance of success to conceive. In November 2017, the Center for Reproductive Medicine opened a brand new state of the art facility in Winter Park on Orlando Avenue. The doctors and staff at CRM are proud to provide a comfortable environment “Where dreams are conceived”. Whether helping to conceive Central Florida’s first IVF baby or preserving fertility via elective egg and sperm freezing, CRM has always been on the leading edge of technology and is part of an elite category of infertility clinics that are equipped with onsite embryology, laboratory and surgical

facilities, providing patients with the highest quality of fertility care and convenience. In addition, CRM is a founding partner in My Egg Bank (MyEggBank.com), the world’s most successful egg freezing program with nearly 5000 successful deliveries. CRM physicians are also consistently recognized as Orlando’s Top Doctors and Best Doctors as well as named to the U.S. News & World Report list of Top U.S. Reproductive Endocrinologists. Dr. Jaffe has received much additional recognition including America’s Top Doctor, Best Doctors in America, Patient’s Choice Award, Compassionate Doctor Award and On-Time Physician Award. Both Dr. Jaffe and her husband Lee can be frequently spotted around town supporting fundraising events throughout Central Florida. In 2007, Dr. Jaffe became an avid cyclist and along with a group of friends began participating in local and national cycling events raising funds for research and support of diabetes, multiple sclerosis, AIDS, breast cancer, leukemia and lymphoma...just to name a few. Her favorite ride was with Young Survivor Coalition in Pennsylvania and Maryland, nearly 250 miles in 2.5 days. Dr. Jaffe is very proud that her daughter has continued in her footsteps with community volunteer involvement in St. Louis where she has participated in fundraising

events and serves as a mentor for future high school engineers. This exemplifies the importance of a leader, leading by example. In the past couple years, Dr. Jaffe has on more than one occasion used her cardiac lifesaving knowledge and skills in public. She applied them once to save a fellow cyclist and most recently over 30,000 feet in the air, she performed CPR! The plane made an emergency landing. Thanks to Dr. Jaffe, the passenger from China lived! Dr. Sharon Jaffe always says she has the best job in the world. “Through over 25 years of taking care of patients, I still look forward to coming in every day and offering my best to every infertility patient referred to me. It is a privilege to help them build their family. I have experienced many exhilarating moments when I meet “my babies” years later when I am introduced to them as children, teenagers or adults on the streets of Central Florida. On numerous occasions a child or a teenager has said “thank you” after being introduced to as me the doctor who helped with their conception. PRICELESS.”

WOMEN OF THE YEAR

DR. APRIL MERRITT Obstetrics and Gynecology

People often ask Dr. April Merritt how she fits so much in a 24-hour day. She responds, “It takes a village and I have a village.” She is a wife, a mother and an OBGYN. She sees herself as “not extraordinary by any means,” but the way she puts her heart and soul into everything she does tells an entirely different story. Her husband and two sons know they are number one in her life. Dr. Merritt was born and raised in Charleston, SC. The daughter of a medical surgical Registered Nurse and a Chief Master Sergeant in the Air Force, she recognized her passion very early for medicine and her drive to excel. This led her to the College of Charleston where she majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry while researching Organic Chemistry and co-authoring several papers. Dr. Merritt felt the need to pursue a career interacting and helping people on a clinical level, which led her to decide to turn down an offer to continue her research and obtain a PhD. Instead, in 1998 she entered the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. During that time, she did research on Helicobacter pylori and its action in the stomach. This led to another co-authored published research paper. She also volunteered at a local pregnancy shelter for teenage girls and participated in education in the schools on sexually-transmitted diseases. Though she always had a passion for women’s health, it was her fourth year medical school rotation on labor and delivery that ignited her dream of becoming an OBGYN. During her medical school years, she met and married her husband, an Army officer and West Point graduate. With his loving support, she completed medical school in 2004. With her husband by her side, Dr. Merritt moved to Orlando Florida to complete her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. During residency, they completed their family with the birth of their two sons in 2005 and 2008. Dr. Merritt entered private practice in 2009. She is a partner at Delaney OB/GYN. She continued to take an interest in writing and education by writing articles for Babyourself magazine as well as teaching midwife students. She enjoys spending time with her boys, catching up on reading, or going out with her husband. Photo by Kimberly Jefcoat

Dr. April A. Merritt is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is a member of the American Institute of Minimally Invasive Surgery. She is a Fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Recently, Delaney OBGYN has taken steps to treat the “entire woman” and has added skin care, laser hair removal and phototherapy as well as botox. Dr. April Merritt was named in the top 20 of Orlando’s Best OB/GYNs by Babyourself Magazine.

DANELLE CHAMBERS MD, FACS

Dr. Danelle Chambers is no stranger to adventure and a fearless embrace of life. Those qualities have led her to great success as well challenges to be overcome. Just recently, her enthusiasm for adventure led her over frightening cliffs while skiing in Breckinridge, Colorado. After excellent medical care, a surgery and a little luck, Dr. Chambers is expected to experience a full recovery and allow her to be right where she was born to be – in the operating room and caring for patients. Dr. Chambers believes firmly that confidence, adventure, and courage are necessary traits to be a good surgeon. She must be ready to evaluate each patient who walks in the door, diagnose the patient’s condition and be prepared to fix any problem. Dr. Chambers’ dream to be a general surgeon began in middle school after hearing the father of one of her friends talk about the surgeries he had conducted that day. She knew then that she wanted to be telling those stories someday. She committed herself to working hard both in the classroom and on the tennis court which allowed her to attend Virginia Tech on an athletic scholarship. After excelling at Virginia Tech, she was accepted into medical school at the University of Florida. Her journey to become a surgeon led her to complete her surgical residency at Orlando Regional Medical Center which cemented her path as a general surgeon and her home in Central Florida. She has been a general surgeon for almost 20 years. Dr. Chambers is the managing partner of The Surgical Group of Orlando and the Medical Director of SandLake Surgery Center. Dr. Danelle Chambers feels strongly that she is blessed to have been given a unique talent and treats that talent as a gift. She focuses each day on using her talent and the gifts she has been given to help people in a wide variety of stressful and challenging situations from minor surgeries to diagnosing life-threatening conditions such as Cancer and ultimately performing surgery to save her patient’s life. She has been the recipient of The most compassionate doctor award and has been a Top Doctor in Orlando magazine. Dr. Chambers knows that she could not have succeeded without the love and support of her family and friends. She takes every opportunity possible to show her appreciation and improve the lives of those around her. “I am grateful for the ability to be involved in the lives of so many people and make an impact. Patients make me realize every day that things can always be worse, and I know that now more than ever. “

WOMEN OF THE YEAR

BETH STEELE Entrepreneur

I call Orlando, Florida my home. I grew up in Upstate, New York. I created Team Staffing Services in August 1995. We staff Light Industrial, Hospitality, and Clerical. Last year (2017) the company billed 11 million dollars. I have had the same familiar faces working in the office anywhere from 14-20 years. I have been nominated “Top 20 Women in Owned Business and Top 20 Staffing Agencies on numerous occasions. We have also been ranked Central FL Top 20 Temporary Placement Agencies many times. Team Staffing Services is a certified minority women owned business and WBENC Certified. In 2011 and 2015, Team Staffing got me the nomination for Women Who Mean Business Award. I created a non-profit organization called Shades-Hopes-Dreams due to my mother’s passing from cancer. The nonprofit organization was founded in 2011. Shades-Hopes-Dreams is a non-profit charitable organization that encourages everyone to boost the fight against cancer. Beth Steele’s favorite superhero is Wonder Women – a nickname family and friends often call her. To others she might be simply known as “the burger girl” or “the temp lady,” but either way, she’s a busy woman. Steele owns and operates Orlando-based employment agency Team Staffing Services as well as (3) Beth’s Burger Bar restaurants that specialize in hamburgers. The businesswoman, who launched Team Staffing in 1995, always had an interest in owning her own restaurant that would serve her favorite food. Her chance came in 2012 when she found a location on Washington Street, but handling the two companies is no cake walk. Steele works long hours since her burger bar is open daily, catering to the business lunch-goers and the latenight club crowd. She describes her rush of work as fun and challenging while offshore fishing is her favorite hobby.

It started when I thought it would be an awesome idea to open a restaurant in downtown Orlando on December 19th, 2012. Opening the first Beth’s Burger Bar was a challenge while still having the Team Staffing company but it was all worth it in the end. After so much success with the first Burger Bar, I couldn’t stop there. I decided that it was time to start planning to open another Burger Bar. The next Beth’s Burger Bar that I opened was the Edgewood location in November 2014. The Edgewood location was just as successful as the first. The Edgewood location has such an old-fashion, homey feel to it, making it very special to me. After success with both restaurants

I decided to start scouting for a new location. Eventually, I came across the Lake Cay area and saw that it was perfect for opening the third Burger Bar. I wanted to go big or go home with this one. I wanted this Beth’s Burger Bar to be the biggest one yet. This burger bar has a very modern design, slightly different from the last two. In 2013, Beth’s Burger Bar won an award for A-List and got 1st place for “Best Local Burger.” Then again in 2014, Beth’s Burger Bar won 2nd place for A-List for “Best Local Burger.” In 2014, we were nominated for “Best Burger” for Best Bets and won. Beth’s Burger Bar won 1st place for Best Local Burger and then 2nd place for Late-Night Dining for Orlando Magazine in 2016, 2017, and 2018. For the Foodie Awards in 2017 Beth’s Burger Bar won 1st place for Best Burger. I find myself wanting to give back on a regular basis. I participate in the organization Big Brothers & Big Sisters. We are known for many of our Charity events that we host at our stores monthly. In April 2017, I decided to open a business called CrutchLife.com. The purpose of this business is to provide the opportunity to look stylish although you are injured. The business allows you to customize your own crutches to your liking. Every month I donate several to Shades Hopes Dreams to give to chemo patients. I have learned a lot from amazing people. My goal is to continue to grow and make a difference. We participate and donate monthly to many charities including, M.S., Autism, Orlando Strong, Tough Biker, local schools, cancer companies, and many more.

Science Night Live at the Orlando Science Center

ADULTS ONLY! By Yngrid Lindores

“It’s social. It’s science. It’s 21 and up”

is the slogan Orlando Science Center has been using to describe Science Night Live, and many agree. The event has been a hit for years. The Orlando Science Center changes things up every month and goes adults-only with an evening devoted to hands-on demonstrations and presentations on a variety of topics. This variety pack comes with drinks: beer, wine and cocktails. Orlando Science center is main purposes are to provide interactive, hands-on methods for learning about both science and technology. The mission being to promote the public’s understanding of science. Science Night Live is simply an extension of OSC’s mission. There are grown-up inspired programming. There is something for every personality type. Science trivia with prizes for the competitive. Special presentations and seminars for the pensive or studious. Experiments for the more adventuresome. 3D films for the observant types. 90

There is even laser light for the tech enthusiasts. Stars and planets viewing for the inner stargazer. The giant telescope used for observing, just so happens to be Florida’s largest publicly accessible refractor telescope. This event is a great chance to enrich the mind while feeling entertained. Spark your curiosity and let your more inquisitive childlike self out for at least the night. The drinks can help with that. Enjoy being a pseudo astronomer, meteorologist, archaeologist, paleontologist, engineer or biologist. The drinks can help with that, too. In the fast pace of 2018, it is difficult to find opportunities to stop and rediscover that sense of exploration and adventure. Science Night Live at the Orlando Science Center is an opportunity with doors opened wide. There will be special superhero content during the upcoming June Science Night Live, which will be seen in the summer exhibit Hall of Heroes. There, guests will find superheroes, crime fighters, gadgets and spies through five disciplines: Powers of the Body, Powers of the Mind, Mastery, Gadgets and Elements. Guests will be able to learn and test

their skills with interactive stations. Some may find that some disciplines are easier to grasp than others. Orlando Science Center will still have some of its primary exhibits out and open to guests. The Dino Dig exhibition hall, Nature Works, and Our Planet; just to name a few. Along with these classic Orlando Science Center staples comes a new and exciting feature: the virtual reality Flight Lab! Replenish between all the excitement with some light bites and adult beverages all available for purchase from Hard Rock Café. Let’s face it: geeking out can be very rewarding. Science Night Live is a great opportunity for adults to enjoy themselves while enriching their minds. It’ll be fun to let go of inhibitions and be a kid for a night. Science Night Live! Saturday, June 2, 2018, 8–11:30PM

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

IT’S TIME TO REQUIRE THE FBI TO RECORD INTERROGATIONS

The recording of events by law enforcement officers has become a common topic on the local and national news. Body cam recordings of police have become the best evidence of police and citizen conduct. Many are surprised to learn that the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies do not routinely record interviews of people under investigation. The failure to record by federal agents is not due to a lack of resources but rather is a way to keep from a jury the actual words and actions of a defendant in a federal criminal case. Federal law enforcement officers often engage in surprise visits to those under investigation. These surprise visits, used by the FBI and other federal law enforcement agencies, is called a “KNOCK AND TALK”. The visits are an effort to have the person under investigation speak without a lawyer being present. Since the person is not under arrest, the federal law enforcement agents do not have to advise the person of the right to remain silent, have a lawyer present and that anything said can be used against him or her. These rights are commonly called receiving one’s Miranda rights, however, advising of Miranda rights are only required to be given if the person is under arrest.

While the visit by the federal investigators is a surprise to the potential defendant, the purpose of the meeting and the questions to be asked are well planned out by the investigators. There will be at least two agents questioning the person and sometimes more. Contemporaneous notes may be taken at the discretion of the agents. If contemporaneous notes are taken, the notes are agents’ impressions which may not include actual quotes. At some point after the interview, one of the agents will type out a memorandum of the conversation based upon memory and any notes. It is not uncommon for several days to lapse between the interview and the preparation of the memorandum. The worst example that I have seen was an agent who testified it might have been up to two years between the interview and the preparation of the rough draft of the interview memorandum.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

Agents come to the interview with preconceived notions of facts and what they think the potential defendant has done. Oftentimes they will ignore statements that are inconsistent with the agents’ previously held beliefs. In any law enforcement interview, it is important to hear the exact questions asked, who brought up subject matters first and the exact answers given by the person under investigation. All of this is lost without a recording. If there is a recording, a jury considering a person’s liberty would be able to hear and judge for themselves whether the questions were clear, whether the defendant understood the questions or appeared to comprehend what was being asked. Recordings would allow a jury to hear answers that were inconsistent with the governments theory or that may exonerate the defendant.

Another problem of not having a recording of the interview is the time between the date of the interview and the date of the trial. In a federal case, it is not uncommon for years to elapse between the interview and the agent’s testimony at trial. During the months or years since the interview, the agent has worked on countless other cases. The end result is the agent is testifying from notes rather than memory of a discussion far in the past. Statements that were inconsistent with guilt, if not recorded, are lost forever and not heard by the jury.

addition, many of the items in the conversation directly impacted the other charges in the case. While the FBI was working with local authorities who often record such statements, no recording was made because the FBI controlled the interview. When a person is facing years in prison, the government should require its agents to record statements of potential defendants so as to let the jury hear what was actually said in order to reach the correct verdict.

In the recent trial of the widow of the Pulse mass murderer, the issue of failing to record the widow’s interview became crucial. In fact, the foreman of the jury is reported to have stated after the verdict that the jury wished that a recording had been made. One of the charges was lying to the FBI in that same interview. In

BEST FRIENDS

Going Back to School for the Summer &

Leaving with Lassie

By Yngrid Lindores

Sign up for Bark University and you’ll leave with a canine as polished and well behaved as Lassie. Bark University is a special 5-week program that offers seven different class schedules to meet your pet objectives. So, bring your canine and don’t worry about the age; Bark University has classes for older dogs and pups. This program is led by Animal Behaviorist, Diane Anderson of the CPDT-KA and is designed with the human-animal bond in mind. The dog behavior workshop is broken down into two parts. Part 1 will implement the basic canine learning theory and pet owners will gain a better understanding of how dogs learn and how best to communicate with positive reinforcement. This portion of the workshop is for the humans only. Part 2, on the other hand allows pet owners to bring their dogs. In this portion of the workshop both pet and pet owner will receive hands on attention from Bark University trainers. No matter the issue, Bark University has a course for you and your furry companion. The puppy class will star puppies age sixmonths-old or younger. The main objective here is socialization; this is the best time to do so since the younger the pup the easier the socialization process will be. Puppy owners will also get the chance to be hands on and learn how to puppy proof their homes and get puppies on a solid routine. The syllabus covers health concerns along with a list of what vaccinations puppies need. The health portion of the program will get into the cause and effect of things. The class will even present a discussion on puppy destructive behavior; an important potty training seminar is included; there will a presentation on the importance of Crate Training. Bark University’s basic obedience class will show you how to utilize positive reinforcements to train your furry companion. This class is helpful in building a better bond between owner and pet

companion. This class will teach the basics such as classic commands: Off, Sit, Down, Stay, Come and proper leash walking. There is also a more advanced tricks class that will help your dog learn more intermediate commands: Shake, Roll Over, Crawl, Hide, and Speak are just a few. These fun and more challenging commands will help your pet feel more engaged with you. The canine good citizen class has a certified exam that ensures your dog is a well-mannered, even tempered member of dog society. You will receive a certificate issued by the American Kennel Club. This testament of even temperament and overall appraisal for your pet’s personality is sure to come in handy. Bark University’s nose work course is all about unleashing your pet’s natural abilities. In this course, your dog will learn to locate hidden objects with the power of their nose. Dogs will ‘hunt’ through a series of obstacle courses in order to create a more challenging environment in which your dog will locate the scent and then signal their triumph. For something a little more fun, try signing your pup onto the agility course. This playful experience will get you and your dog moving. Lure your dog through hoops, over jumps, through tunnels and over walk boards. Once your dog masters these fun basics you will be able to lead your pup on to the teeter-totter. By the end of the five weeks both you and your dog will be able to run the entire course together with finesse. Something important to note is that these classes are a $150.00 value but are being offered to you at only $65.00. There is one catch: dogs should be friendly and must be current on vaccinations, particularly the H3N2 flu vaccine. This time around summer school is actually going to be a blast.
