12 - PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Dear Readers, > As October begins, I am reminded how fashionable our city is, both in style and character. I recently attended the alwayswonderful Fashion Week at the Mall at Millenia, where I witnessed the creativity of our local culture, as well as the kindness of local friends. Brenda and her team have crafted this annual event series into a fashion show that truly makes Orlando shine. Lawrence Zarian was definitely the perfect choice for hosting the show, and the latest designs set our city on the right pace for a fashion-forward fall. It is always a gift to see good friends, and there were far too many to mention! I remember sitting at Gucci after the show with dear friend Mark NeJame, discussing how Orlando has truly become a much better and quite stylish community within the last few years. That was our goal when we started the Orlando Style Magazine project, which has transformed from its project status into the most respected and appreciated magazine publication amongst those who appreciate a classy, stylish, and informative read, or “a class of it’s own,” as Mark described it. I am so grateful for encouraging comments like Mark’s words. Hard work, determination, and focus on concept really pay off; we love what we do, and hearing what our readers think of the end result each month gives us the motivation to continue in our progress. We always receive strong interest from our readers in support of events like Fashion Week, so we want to make sure that our readers have firsthand notice about Orlando’s latest happenings. If you wish to get exclusive announcements of what’s hot in the city, this is your opportunity to get on the “list” by logging into the “VIP Sign-Up” on our website, OrlandoStyleMagazine. com. This service is free to our readers and to all those interested in our sponsored events as well as the many other features offered online. This entire “Retail Therapy” issue is packed with great articles and illuminating profiles as we continually strive to raise the bar of publishing excellence. Unmatched in our region, Orlando Style continues to excel,

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

even while others are constantly wondering how we do it each month. However, it’s no secret; with our terrific staff, we devote ourselves to going the extra mile for both our readers and our advertisers. More than anything, we really love what we do and enjoy witnessing the results and successes reaped by our clientele and readers. Because this all puts us ahead of the competition, we are able to help enhance Orlando’s position in the world with new and creative media reporting, which provides a more intimate as well as informative view of our beautiful city. It’s a win-win situation all around. This month, don’t forget to enjoy all that Orlando has to offer for the Halloween season, especially our world-class theme parks, including Universal Studio’s thrilling Halloween Horror Nights. Bring your friends and loved ones and make it a night to remember! Also, October brings much awareness, as it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Lupus Awareness Month, and National Diabetes Month, so be sure to remember those who are affected by these hardships and share your love and support. As always, we hope that you all appreciate and are entertained by the content of this issue, and we wish for you to have as much fun reading it as we had putting it together for you! For those of you who have not done so, be encouraged to have Orlando Style Magazine find its way into your mailbox and support our efforts by becoming a privileged subscriber. Go to OrlandoStyleMagazine. com to become a member of our family! We wish you all a Happy Halloween, and we hope that you continue to stay safe during the hurricane season. Thank you again for your dedication to our publication. Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode, Publisher

HIGHBALL HARVEST at the Ritz-Carlton

> With award winning restaurant NORMAN’S and several other fine dining options on property, we’re quick to think of the RitzCarlton brand when it comes to upscale, extravagant dining. Their world-renowned name has become synonymous with class and luxury but never before has it come to mind for casual dining as well—at least until now, that is!

Orlando, Grande Lakes By Cathleen K. Bode

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

On September 6th, Grande Lakes Orlando announced the grand opening of Highball & Harvest (“H&H”) at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. H&H is a innovative, casual dining restaurant that boast a farm-fresh take on resort dining and a modern approach to beloved Southern comfort cuisine. Spearheaded by Chef de Cuisine Mark Jeffers, who joined the Ritz-Carlton Orlando family in 2007, the restaurant’s culinary inspiration draws heavily upon the Florida native’s travels around the South. This becomes more than apparent to guest as they try Chef Jeffers’ locally sourced dishes infused with only the freshest ingredients provided from

nearby suppliers and harvested from the resort’s own 7,000-square-foot Whisper Creek Farm. H&H’s ingredients are guaranteed to speak for themselves as you experience regional flavors in seasonal Southern, Lowcountry and Cajun-inspired cuisine. As with all of Ritz-Carlton’s first-rate dining establishments, H&H offers guest several unforgettable signature dish options such as their H&H Pig-nPotatoes. Poached egg, potato hash and tender pork cheeks with sweet peppers and caramelized onions will have you ordering this decadent breakfast dish at all hours of the day. The Southern

DINING ‘N STYLE - 19

Of course every foodie knows that great tasting food is only one part of an exceptional dining experience. In addition to skilled cooks, a restaurant’s design and atmosphere can often times be just as important as what’s placed on the plate in front of you. The design throughout H&H is railroad-inspired and plays off the name “Highball & Harvest” as well as the region’s “Iron Harvest” railroad from years past. You’ll feel at home from the very moment you enter the casual, yet elegant establishment. Designed by The Johnson Studio, H&H features communal seating, a large bar/ lounge area with leather padded seats and a raw oyster bar with chefs shucking

fresh oysters by hand. Warm accents, rustic sophistication and various artistic elements combine with modern RitzCarlton refinement to bring you a casual, interactive dining experience like no other.

AS WITH ALL OF RITZCARLTON’S FIRST-RATE DINING ESTABLISHMENTS, H&H OFFERS GUEST SEVERAL UNFORGETTABLE SIGNATURE DISH OPTIONS

Spreads, another guilty pleasure, is a pimento cheese dip and smoked fish dip served with pickled veggies, benne seed lavash, and grilled sourdough presented in a rustic metal tackle box. The Smoked Lamb Brisket has also proven to be a favorite with boiled peanut “baked beans” and collard greens. Other H&H signature dishes include house-made beef jerky and their praised H&H Hot Sauce made from Whisper Creek Farm peppers. When it comes to sides, the resort’s thirty-person pastry team is responsible for one of the restaurant’s most satisfying offerings: Parker House Rolls served up warm and moist. Made from scratch with old-world Khorasan wheat, these rolls pair beautifully with all the above and every other item on H&H’s outstanding menu of southern classics.

The interactive part comes into play at what’s quickly becoming the heart of the H&H dining experience, and a favorite spot amongst groups looking for a new, unique way to enjoy handcrafted, seasonal cocktails. At H&H’s interactive cocktail table, skillful bar chefs mix various ingredients while instructing over carefully curated and personalized cocktail classes. Some signature cocktails include: the Moonshine “Whistle-Stop,” the refreshing “Green Acres” with house ginger beer and jasmine tea, and a “Cranberry Cobbler” mixed with honey from the resort’s on-site apiaries. H&H may be casual dining, but these cocktails will make it hard to forget you’re at the Ritz-Carlton. Most will be served on the rocks with hand-carved ice, sculpted

bar side with a Japanese ice saw and often infused with herbs and citrus from Whisper Creek Farm. H&H will also offer Central Florida’s largest selection of wines from the cask. To ensure perfect temperature control and the utmost freshness, every item featured on the extensive wine menu was carefully selected by Advanced Sommelier Kris Soto. Simply put, Highball & Harvest redefines the casual dining experience at The Ritz-Carlton. With the grand opening of the innovative establishment, Grande Lakes has once again remained true to their commitment of farm-to-fork dining and extraordinary creativity in the kitchen. With exquisite interactive dining, handsome design, enticing cocktails and a carefully crafted menu, H&H has all the ingredients necessary to win over the hearts (and stomachs!) of every hungry patron coming through their welcoming door. Don’t wait any longer to experience this flourishing new restaurant for yourself. Head to Highball & Harvest today for a taste of casual Southern dining at Orlando’s premier luxury resort, The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. < Highball & Harvest Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes 4012 Central Florida Parkway Orlando, FL 32837 Reservations: 407.393.4422

NORTH WEST VS. BLUE IVY...WHICH ONE OF THESE LUCKY TOTS IS THE MOST SPOILED OF THEM ALL? By Riesa Pascal

> Once upon a time you actually had to be talented or do something significant to be considered a celebrity, but these days all you need is a famous last name and you’re set for life. Never before in history have people been so obsessed with the children of celebrities. Celebrity kids are just that—kids! However, these children don’t exactly lead what you or I might call a “normal” childhood. They don’t celebrate birthdays with boxed cake and a piñata. They rent out entire theme parks and giveaway thousands of dollars worth of party favors. They don’t ride a Big Wheel along the sidewalk or down the street. They hop in their miniature Mercedes Benz and take it for a cruise around their mansion as 50 Cent’s 2-year-old son can happily attest to. Essentially every child is a mini version of their parents and celebrity children live a life that equally reflects that. Perhaps nothing proves that more than America’s versions of baby royalty, North West and Blue Ivy… step aside Prince George!

DON’T MISS THE BEAT - 39

After joining forces for a successful North American tour in 2011, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull have now reunited to share the stage for a 24-city tour this fall. Ever since the release of his self-titled debut album in 1995, Enrique Iglesias has been taking the music industry by storm as one of the key artists in the Latin and pop crossover world. Iglesias is set to thrill audiences with a stellar version of his popular number, “Bailando,” which gained wide appeal upon its release in the spring. It is expected that Iglesias and Pitbull will perform together at the show, most likely during Iglesias’ single, “I’m a Freak,” in which Pitbull is featured on the recording. Enrique and Pitbull have stated that their new stage design offers fans an upclose-and-personal experience, so there will certainly be many surprises! One surprise already revealed is the duo’s opening act, the fast-rising urban star, J Balvin, whose breakout summer song, “6AM” has reached number one on Billboard’s Latin Rhythm Airplay chart. This concert is sure to be a celebration of Latin flair and fun, so come enjoy the dynamic duo of Iglesias and Pitbull and dance the night away. <

White sand beaches, championship golf courses, world-class shopping, and pristine nature preserves: picturesque Naples has it all. And right in the heart of the city’s historic downtown stands the European-style Inn on Fifth. The newly renovated hotel offers discerning travelers luxury and comfort and sits just blocks from the teal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Guests enjoy the best in amenities and easy access to Southwest Florida’s natural beauty. Naples is the perfect spot for selfindulgence and is only a three-anda-half-hour drive from Orlando and a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Tampa, providing visitors a welcome escape from hectic city life. Centrally located on Fifth Avenue South, Naples’ palm-lined downtown strip, the AAA Four Diamond-rated Inn on Fifth features sophisticated and contemporary decor, a columned marble lobby with sweeping staircase, high ceilings, and balconies with French doors that overlook the Fifth Avenue promenade. The breathtaking Waterford crystal chandeliers that hang over the lobby were imported from Ireland and add to the Inn’s palatial feel. A favorite among affluent locals and visitors from Miami and Europe, the Inn on Fifth presents a choice of spacious rooms ranging from 550 to 1160 square

feet, each featuring custom-made furniture and a modern palette of creamy whites and grays mixed with splashes of black and bold reds. Guests enjoy a heated rooftop pool, designer baths, premium linens, and a 24-hour fitness center with flat screen TV, free weights, and multiple treadmills and elliptical machines. To deliver an even greater level of luxury to patrons, the hotel completed a $20 million renovation and expansion in December 2012. Now sitting opposite the original Inn on the posh Fifth Avenue South are 32 high-end Club Level Suites, including two two-bedroom Presidential Suites, that offer an enhanced guest experience, lavish furnishings, marble bathrooms, and furnished balconies. Club Level guests check in with their own personal concierge on the third floor before enjoying the pampering and exclusivity usually reserved for celebrities. Other perks associated with the Club Level Suites include a secluded rooftop sundeck with a hot tub and a spacious living area in each room. Complimentary refreshments, including buffet breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening hors d’oeuvres and full bar, are available in the lounge. Evening turn down service is another highlight of the expanded hospitality.

The Inn on Fifth is also home to the award-winning Spa on Fifth, where guests can soothe their sun-soaked skin after a visit to the beach. Located on the third floor, the luxurious spa offers a tranquil atmosphere to ease tension and uses only the finest, all-natural products for massages and facials. Skilled technicians pamper guests with body wraps and scrubs, deep tissue and Swedish massages, aromatherapy treatments, reflexology, and other traditional and unique therapies. The spa’s top-of-the-line botanicals and herbal products invigorate and refresh, and each experience is tailored to the needs of individual guests. A steam room and sauna are also available free of charge. The boutique hotel is a popular location for dream weddings, golf enthusiasts, romantic getaways, and corporate meetings, boasting more than 8,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space perfect for small to medium sized groups. With professional on-site catering, an open-air poolside courtyard, and customizable spaces, the hotel appeals to both business travelers and those in town to tie the knot. The Inn only hosts a single event at a time and provides all-inclusive services, so each guest receives quality care and undivided attention. The lavishly

landscaped decks, stylish ballrooms, and proximity to the beach make the hotel an ideal location for romance or networking. In early 2014, The Inn on Fifth added a trendy, upscale restaurant called Avenue5 that serves American cuisine in a contemporary setting best described as “vintage glam.” The 7000-squarefoot eatery serves local vegetables, prime cuts of beef, and fresh seafood from the coasts of Florida and Maine. The award-winning wine list is extensive and phenomenal, and diners interested in signature cocktails won’t be disappointed, either. With two private dining areas, a stunning floor-to-ceiling glass wine case, and views of Fifth Avenue, no need to look further than Avenue5! Also attached to the hotel is Truluck’s Seafood Steak Crabhouse, where guests can indulge in an impressive selection of crab and seafood dishes, including fresh stone crab delivered daily from Tuluck’s local fishery. Thick-cut steaks, fresh oysters, and a variety of wines available by the bottle or glass are highlights of this cosmopolitan restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and more casual than that at Avenue5, but still stylish and intimate, and Truluck’s entertains diners with live piano music. StyleToMe.com

IN EARLY 2014, THE INN ON FIFTH ADDED A TRENDY, UPSCALE RESTAURANT CALLED AVENUE5 THAT SERVES AMERICAN CUISINE IN A CONTEMPORARY SETTING BEST DESCRIBED AS “VINTAGE GLAM.”

Patrons able to pry themselves away from the Inn’s charm and luxury will find lots to do in Naples. In addition to the amazing beaches and challenging golf courses of Florida’s Paradise Coast, Naples delivers a variety of other activities. Kayaking, nature walks, boat tours, and parasailing take adventurers deeper into nature, while numerous performing arts venues, world-class museums, and an abundance of galleries will appeal to those seeking a cultural experience. There are also sunset dinner cruises, trolley tours on vintage cable cars, and the 52-acre Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens. Plus, Naples’ trendy downtown neighborhood is only a 15-minute stroll from the historic Naples Pier, considered by many to be the best place on the coast to watch the sunset. There’s certainly no shortage of shopping in Naples, and strolling through the boutique-lined downtown streets takes explorers by upscale, independently owned, one-of-a-kind shops selling fine jewelry, designer fashions, beach decor, framed prints, whimsical pet products, and world-class art. It’s no wonder the location appeals to the wealthy and style-conscious traveler. Also nearby is the historic Third Street South shopping district, offering a stylish collection of antique shops, toy stores,

and designer hotspots for women and men. Tin City, an eclectic waterside entertainment and shopping area housed in what was once an oyster processing plant, is only a few blocks from the hotel. Within a short drive, bargain hunters will find the Naples Treasure Trail, a six-block area of tasteful secondhand shops selling jewelry, antiques, and unique furniture. Fifth Avenue South isn’t only for foodies and fashion aficionados, though. The Gulf breezes, laid-back atmosphere, and refined culture of Naples invite visitors to relax and linger, taking in all the city has to offer. Benches and mini parks are scattered throughout downtown for stopping to smell the flowers—or perhaps the scents from local fudge shops—and enjoying the sounds of laughter and live music that fill the air around the Inn on Fifth. < For more information please visit: www.innonfifth.com Inn on Fifth 699 5th Ave South Naples, FL 34102 888-403-8778

ORLANDO’S LEGAL ELITE

RISING STARS Intro by Page L. Carlos

> Over the past 20 years, the number of law graduates passing the Florida bar exam

has steadily increased. With this influx of “new blood” being pumped into the legal body, there is no shortage of new attorneys entering the Orlando area. For these lawyers, getting established in such a competitive legal market is not easy; however, a select few attorneys have managed to make a difference in the community and they will continue to do so in the future. With their dedication, creativity, legal skills and judgment, these lawyers have made a positive impression and impact, earning them the title of Orlando’s Legal Elite Rising Stars. How were they selected? Orlando’s top attorneys were surveyed and asked to name lawyers that they considered to be “Rising Stars” in the profession. The lawyers profiled in the following pages exemplify high standards of excellence and achievement and have earned the respect and esteem of their colleagues. They are considered to be among the most recognized and up-and-coming attorneys in Orlando as chosen by their peers. <

SEAN SMALLWOOD, ESQ. Orlando Family Law Attorney > “I never thought that I would come this far in such a short time” said Sean Smallwood regarding the growth of his Orlando family law practice. After earning his Bachelor’s in political science from the University of Tampa he then moved to Orlando to study law at Barry Law and pursued his dream of becoming an attorney. While in school he took on multiple internships so he could have the best hands on experience possible. “I knew that the job market was terrible for new lawyers at the time and I wanted to have enough experience by the time I got out of school to do my own thing if I needed to.” Sean graduated and passed the Bar exam when the recession was at its worst, with the sagging job market and a family to raise he decided to take a leap of faith and start his own law practice, Sean Smallwood, P.A. Never did he know that taking that step of faith would lead him to have such a thriving practice in such a short time. “I have been blessed every step of the way in my business, but no matter what I keep myself grounded and remember that everything I have is a blessing from above”.

Sean Smallwood, ESQ. Orlando Family Law 100 W. Lucerne Circle, Suite 200 Orlando, FL 32801 P: 407-347-4738 F: 866-798-4010 seansmallwoodlaw.com

Staying grounded and giving back to the community was not a difficult thing for Sean as he travels to youthful offender prisons where he is a motivational speaker to kids who are incarcerated. Among many other volunteer activities he participated in a Christian motorcycle prison outreach where the volunteers actually rode their motorcycles inside a Florida prison for a day of festivities. Sean Smallwood, P.A. is a Family Law Firm located in downtown Orlando, Florida. The firm focuses on child custody, establishment of paternity, parental rights, and child support. Sean

says “I love children so when a case lets me go to bat for a child’s best interest I will gladly take the case. “ There’s no doubt that Sean’s passion stems from the love of his own family. “When I am not at the office I am spending time with my family.” Sean is happily married to his wife Danielle and they have four children. “I have an amazing eight year old step-daughter and for the next two months I can proudly say that we have three children under three years old and they will always be my single greatest accomplishment. The little ones are so high maintenance, but, it doesn’t even feel like work. They are my little partners in crime whether we are on the couch watching SpongeBob or their chasing each other around the house laughing hysterically in their cute squeaky voices, I love spending time with my family and cannot imagine my life without them.” His friends joke asking “Sean, haven’t you figured out where kids come from yet?” However, this rising star is not shy to admit that he wants even more kids someday. Most would agree that Sean has it all, a beautiful loving wife, four beautiful children, a profession that he loves, and a thriving Law Firm. When posed with the question: What words of wisdom would you offer to others? He said “I would have to tell people to just slow down and smell the roses. Do not lose focus on the things in life that are really important like your family. Also, never be afraid to take risks in life because the decision to be an entrepreneur was one of the best things that ever happened to me. However, never let work steal time away from your family because they are what determines how successful you truly are in life.” <

She started college at Colgate University as a pre-med student with plans to attend medical school; but somewhere between freshman orientation and graduation Paige’s plans changed and she ended up with a major degree in Africana Studies, a minor degree in History and acceptance letters to several law schools. A native of Southern Connecticut, Paige decided to trade cold winters for sunshine and moved to Orlando to attend Florida A&M University (FAMU) College of Law. While at FAMU, Paige was a member of the Law Review and she served as the Law Review’s Editorin-Chief her 3L year. In law school, Paige gained practical experience through her internships at the law firms of Pardy & Rodriguez and NeJame Law and by working at her law school’s Housing Clinic. Paige graduated from FAMU with honors in May 2012 and passed the bar exam that same year. Since passing the bar exam, Paige has gained experience in the areas of Immigration, Criminal Defense and Personal Injury but the majority of her practice has been devoted to Family Law. She handles many different aspects of Family Law including dissolutions of marriage, child support issues, child custody disputes and mediations. She takes her work very seriously and enjoys being able to help her clients through difficult times. Paige has a real passion for people and she simply wants to put forth her best effort to serve those who may not be able to serve themselves.

active member of the Orlando legal community. She is very involved with the Young Lawyer’s Section (YLS) of the Orange County Bar Association. This year, she was the Chairperson for the YLS “Afternoon at the State Courthouse”. This unique seminar, taught only by judges, was created by the Honorable C. Jeffrey Arnold and is designed to provide insight into the practice of law and give helpful practice advice to young lawyers, law students and other members of the profession. The event was a success this year and Paige hopes to be the Chairperson again next year. Paige is also a member of the Central Florida Family Law Inn of Court and the George C. Young American Inn of Court. Both of the Inns of Court are invitation only organizations that were founded to promote the highest level of practice and professionalism among its members. “Ever since I was young I always wanted to help people; that’s why I wanted to become a doctor. It is funny though how life happens and our plans change and somehow God gets us all where we are supposed to be and gets us all doing what we are supposed to do. I’m still helping people I’m just doing it in a different way and I’m very thankful.” In addition to practicing law and being involved in the legal community, Paige is a COMPACT mentor in the Orange County Public School System, an active member of First Baptist Church Orlando, a private tutor for students in second grade through high school and a trained dancer. In her spare time, Paige enjoys cooking, visiting her family in Connecticut and having game nights with friends. <

Attorney Fisher has been practicing since 2005 and handles primarily Immigration law although his firm handles other areas. Attorney Fisher says that at this stage of his career he has not counted exactly how many immigration cases he has handled, reviewed, consulted with or been associated with, but he estimates that the number is easily in the many thousands. Based on this experience, Attorney Fisher says, “there is rarely a situation that I have not seen before.” Based on Attorney Fisher’s experience, he has been awarded the Martindale Hubbel AV rating of Preeminent Attorney, recognized by Avvo as having the highest possible rating as “Superb”, won the Avvo Client choice award and is rated by Lead Counsel and previously hosted a weekly legal radio show.

Prior to starting Fisher and Frommer, Attorney Fisher worked as an attorney at a law firm that practiced solely immigration law. During his tenure with this firm he was tasked with filing various visas for a variety of individuals ranging from corporations, individuals and entertainers. He was personally responsible for successfully bringing over hundreds of individuals on employment based visas. Also, during this period he was part of the process of lobbying the Department of Labor against changes on behalf of corporate clients concerning the H visa. Attorney Fisher represented his firm and its clients in Washington, DC where he met with the heads of the Department of Labor Foreign Labor Division. He also traveled to Chicago to the Department of Labor’s office where they actually process Foreign Labor Certifications. Attorney Fisher estimates he makes between 75 and 100 appearances per year between Immigration Court and USCIS interviews. As an immigration attorney, Attorney Fisher is allowed to practice in any immigration court in the US. Due to the nature of his work he travels on a constant basis to the three immigration courts in Florida which are located in Orlando, Miami (Krome and downtown) and Pompano Beach. KENNETH HAMNER Attorney at Law Counsel services, due diligence, tax, international business, strategy, venture capital, private equity, and angel investor services. The firm has offices in downtown Orlando and at the Tampa Bay Technology Incubator.

> Ken has enjoyed a career track very different than most attorneys. Having started his career over 20 years ago in the financial services practice at Arthur Andersen and then moving on to Ernst & Young’s consulting practice, Ken later served as a CFO of an early stage venture before becoming an attorney. “Looking back on it now, I owe a great deal of my success now to my mentors very early in my career. Richard Jeanneret, now Americas Vice Chair of Transaction Advisory Services at Ernst & Young, John Woods, now Vice Chairman and CFO of Union Bank, and Dan Lasik, also a Partner with Ernst & Young are three guys that I’d say had the most impact. I worked closely with those guys back at Arthur Andersen at the beginning of my career, and I realize now that a lot of my attention to detail and ability to see the big picture beyond those details came from the work habits I developed from them,” Ken said. In fact, Ken didn’t begin practicing law immediately after law school. Instead, he served as CFO and General Counsel for two international steel trading firms before joining a full-service firm in Orlando, where he eventually became managing partner. In 2008, he left to launch The Entrepreneur Law Center to focus on building a multidisciplinary practice tailored to the needs of business clients. “My vision is to develop a firm that goes beyond being a litigation strategist or a transactional specialist to one of a long-term trusted advisor to clients, to see beyond the immediate needs of the client to help them build foundations for sustainable success.”, Ken said. The Entrepreneur Law Center focuses primarily on business planning, mergers & acquisitions, CFO/General OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

Aside from his Juris Doctor and MBA from Florida State University, Ken also hold a MS in Entrepreneurship in Applied Technologies from the University of South Florida, a Master of Accounting in Forensic Accounting from Florida Atlantic University, a BS in Accounting and a BS in Finance, both from George Mason University. He is a Certified Merger & Acquisition Advisor, a Master Analyst in Financial Forensics, a Certified Fraud Examiner, a Certified Due Diligence Professional, a Certified Business Intermediary, a Licensed Real Estate Broker, and holds a Series 63 securities license with FINRA. Internationally, he has studied law at Humboldt University in Berlin where he received certificates in both mediation and dispute resolution, at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing, where he received a Certificate in Chinese Law, and at the University of the West Indies in Barbados, where he authored a published academic article on foreign direct investment. services for DHL Global Forwarding says, “I have worked with many attorneys both on a personal and professional basis and Ken was absolutely the best. Without a doubt his common sense approach coupled with flawless strategy produced positive results far greater than expected. Ken has so many skill sets not commonly found in even large law firms, much less in one attorney directing his own boutique firm. I have called on Ken’s expertise to structure M&A deals, to conduct due diligence on acquisition targets, and for general business insight into a wide variety of matters over the years.” Stanley and Debbie Britt, who own a highly successful e-travel venture and a CFO/General Counsel client for more than five years, said the following, “We consult Ken on virtually all aspects of our business and consider him to be our most trusted advisor. Not only has he been undefeated in the courtroom for us, which has been invaluable in an increasingly litigious environment, but his ability to understand our business and provide strategic insight has been a key factor in our success.” In closing, Ken said, “What I enjoy most about my work is helping my clients become successful. The increasing rate of globalization and the infusion of technology into all facets of business will inevitably increase the pace and scale of the global M&A marketplace. Companies that used to be too small to even consider global alliances or to sustain global customer relationships now can. My firm is living proof. I have clients reaching well beyond Florida to international commercial centers like New York, Beijing, Seoul, Amsterdam, and London, as well as clients in the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and Africa. Tomorrow’s clients could come from anywhere.”<

In grade school, Irene told her family that someday she was going to be a lawyer so that she could take care of them and help others. > Wasinger Law Office specializes in estate planning, real estate and bankruptcy law across the state of Florida. Founded by Matthew T. Wasinger, Wasinger Law Office works to provide highly personalized legal services beginning with estate planning to protect their clients’ families, businesses and legacies.

Raised in the Midwest, the values of hard work, family, honesty and integrity were instilled in Matt from a young age. A graduate of Stetson University College of Law, Matt served as vicepresident of the Society of Mediators, Arbitrators, and Negotiators. Prior to Stetson Law School, he attended Kansas State University, where he majored in philosophy with a pre-law emphasis. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and was selected to join the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, which only selects the top 1% of college seniors across the country. He was also a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society, received a Philosophy Department Academic Scholarship, served as Treasurer of the Pre-Law Club, and was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity.

Over the years he developed a strong desire to help families with young children after witnessing friends and family members struggle with estate issues when family members passed away. Matt’s perspective on estate planning was shaped by these experiences. He realized the most common mistake people make is their estate planning stops once they sign a will or trust. This becomes problematic over time because assets and family situations change leaving the original estate plan inadequate or obsolete.

To avoid his clients’ plans from becoming outdated, Wasinger Law estate plans include a no charge three-year review. “Our goal is to ensure that our client’s estate plans adapt as their lives change to protect both their family members and financial assets”, Wasinger says, “because an out of date estate plan is almost as useless, and just as costly, as having no plan.” As a result, Wasinger sees his clients’ signing of estate planning documents to be the start of a lifelong relationship. Another portion of his practice is in the real estate and business fields. Matt represents banks, private lenders, businesses and individuals in the areas of business formation, title actions, foreclosures, liens, and landlord-tenant issues. He also handles sale and purchase contracts, leases and rental agreements. Additionally, he has significant practice experience as a workers’ compensation defense attorney representing Fortune 500 companies, self-insured funds, and carriers. However, the part of his practice he most enjoys is estate planning. “Being able to provide people with the peace of mind that their family and business will be taken care of when the unexpected happens is an incredibly rewarding experience.” In addition to being admitted to the Florida Bar, Wasinger is admitted to the U.S. District Courts in the Middle, Southern and Northern Districts of Florida. He is also a member of the Orange County Bar Association in addition to serving on the Board of Directors at Waterfall Cove Condominium Association. <

> Today we use computers, tablets and phones to store and communicate all types of information including financial records, banking transactions, private and business messages, political opinions and pictures. The intrusion into our private digital records has been the subject of news and entertainment. The movie Enemy of the State, starring Gene Hackman and Will Smith, provided an uncomfortable window into government’s digital snooping and spying. The extent of government invasion into digital privacy was partially disclosed by Edward Snowden. The disclosures by Snowden reveal that the actions depicted in Enemy of the State have an alarming basis in reality. Law enforcement has technology by which it can identify messages, images, music, or political communication shared on peer-to-peer networks. Current technology allows monitoring of the Internet and specifically identifies those that receive or share any type of digital images or messages, targeted by law enforcement. SPECIAL PROMOTIONAL FEATURE

Law enforcement has also searched the contents of mobile phones upon making an arrest. One such search, following an arrest for driving on a suspended license, resulted in a ruling by the Supreme Court of the United States in June 2014. The Supreme Court recognized the importance of preserving privacy rights in digital information stored on cell phones and ruled that police must obtain a warrant before reviewing the contents of a person’s cell phone. The actions of government searching, monitoring, tracking, recording, and storing the communications of its citizens in the digital age pose a real and present danger to the freedom of speech and privacy that Americans hold so dear. The Supreme Court’s ruling is but one step toward preserving the right of privacy in the digital computer age. <

MEDICAL MARIJUANA Understanding November’s Ballot By Mark NeJame

Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law

> MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND NOTE YOUR POLLING LOCATION NOW, FLORIDA RESIDENTS, FOR THIS YEAR’S BALLOT IS SURE TO BRING OUT THE CROWDS. FRONT AND CENTER IS THE FLORIDA RIGHT TO MEDICAL MARIJUANA INITIATIVE, AMENDMENT 2. THE NOVEMBER 4, 2014 BALLOT TITLE AND SUMMARY WILL READ:

BALLOT TITLE: Use of Marijuana for Certain Medical Conditions BALLOT SUMMARY: Allows the medical use of marijuana for individuals with debilitating diseases as determined by a licensed Florida physician. Allow caregivers to assist patients’ medical use of marijuana. The Department of Health shall register and regulate centers that produce and distribute marijuana for medical purposes and shall issue identification cards to patients and caregivers. Applies only to Florida law. Does not authorize violations of federal law or any non-medical use, possession or production of marijuana. Florida needs a supermajority vote of 60 percent of those voting on Amendment 2 in order to decriminalize marijuana for medical use. Currently, Florida is one of the three states with pending legislation on legalization of medical marijuana. Almost half the country has passed legislation in favor of its

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

use, with regulations varying from state to state. This proves to present some obvious problems if or when the Federal government opts to legalize marijuana. But how does Florida plan on approaching this new industry? • Medicinal marijuana users will not receive an actual prescription. This is because in order to issue prescriptions for narcotics, a physician must register with the Drug Enforcement Agency. Since marijuana is illegal at the federal level, a doctor prescribing Schedule 1 narcotic marijuana would lose their license. Instead, physicians issue a “certification” – which is nothing more than a letter of recommendation. The Department of Health would then issue an identification card, which in turn would be used to obtain marijuana from state approved and regulated centers. • Medicinal marijuana patients will not be allowed to grow

IN THE KNOW - 71

their own plants as to not vitiate state regulations. • Qualifying diseases include HIV/AIDs, Cancer, Glaucoma, Hepatitis C, Crohn’s Disease, Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis. This is not an exhaustive list, however, as the Florida Supreme Court has qualified conditions that would “cause impaired strength, weakness or enfeeblement.” This suggests conditions such as muscle spasms, neck pain, back pain and menstrual cramps may qualify for physician certification. The constitutional amendment contains six limitations on how the amendment’s language can be construed: * The amendment does not “affect laws relating to non-medical use, possession, production or sale of marijuana.” ▪

The amendment does not authorize “the use of medical marijuana by anyone other than a qualifying patient.” ▪ The amendment does not allow for the “operation of a motor vehicle, boat, or aircraft while under the influence of marijuana.” ▪ The amendment does not require accommodations for medical marijuana use “in any place of education or employment, or of smoking medical marijuana in any public place.” ▪ The amendment does not require “any health insurance provider or any government agency or authority to reimburse any person for expenses related to the medical use of marijuana.” ▪ The amendment does not require “the violation of federal law or purports to

give immunity under federal law.” What’s important to understand is that the nation’s legal evolution appears to be in favor of decriminalization. States like Colorado are the litmus test for new industry, and they are certainly faring well – at least in tax revenue. As the conversation continues and existing laws evolve to shape this foreign landscape, decisions to vote for or against these initiatives must be made objectively and informed. So keep current on this topic, Florida, because it won the popularity contest and may be here to stay… ballotpedia.org <

YOU

Might be a Fat, Lazy

Caveman By Emily Topper

> Way back in January, you decided to kiss your couch potato body goodbye and signed up for a gym membership. But now, many months later as you lay in bed at 5:30 in the morning with your arm reaching for the snooze button, you’re forced to acknowledge just how quickly you gave up on your healthy resolution. Sadly, this isn’t the first time this has happened to you--or to anyone. Gyms can often see a nearly fifty percent increase in memberships in the month of January, but attendance usually starts to decline after a month or two. But don’t blame yourself...

THE ALLURE

OF DARK & Uncanny Fiction YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE’S DARKER SIDE ATTRACTS MORE READERS By Maria Delis

> She woke up in the middle of the woods, unable to remember how she got there. The moonlight hid behind the thick foliage, darkness now overwhelming her psyche. Her head hurt, her surroundings a blur. But then, just when she was gaining the strength to lift herself up, she saw those familiar eyes – those red eyes that haunted her dreams. A sharp pain numbed her legs, immobilizing her. She had now come face-to-face with her nightmare …

And that is when thunder roared. You quickly shut your book and hid under your bed covers. But you had to find out what happens next. Does the heroine find her strength to fight her worst fear? What would the pages reveal? Although each chapter read would make it harder for you to fall asleep, you could not put the book down. Perhaps you wanted the escape, an escape from your reality. At that point in your life, maybe failing a math test was, in fact, scarier.

browsing these sections looking for the best horror and dark fiction. Why are both readers and writers so attracted to this genre? In Rick Chiantaretto’s “Death of the Body” (Book 1 of the “Crossing Death” series), we meet Edmund, a young boy who grew up in a different world, one full of magic. He can understand nature, even talk to the trees. One day, the “kingdom of men” conquers his town. The betrayer, the one they all SOME, trusted, murders him.

All influences and his take on darker fiction’s popularity. year round, you will find pre-teens, teens, and even older adults

Orlando Style: Who are your literary influences? Rick Chiantaretto: I suppose I could call out the dark fiction greats here, people like Stephen King and Anne Rice, people who have proved that dark fiction can be wildly successful, but I would have to admit that while they are an inspiration, they are not my influences. I would have to say that LJ Smith’s “The Forbidden Game” series taught me to love to read, and how to craft surprising and fulfilling endings. Nancy Kilpatrick encouraged me when I was a young writer and

taught me how to approach Gothic, religious, and spiritual themes with care and respect. Bram Stoker taught me how to scare a reader using intellect and psychology. I take influence from everywhere, but particularly from things I don’t personally like. I can give you a specific example: “Twilight” was (and is) insanely popular while being highly criticized for its dependent relationships and weak female characters; but I have to admit that “Death of the Body” is written in the first person point-of-view as a direct

result of Stephenie Meyer. She taught me how to hear that voice in my head, and how to craft a story from a single point-of-view. I loved the dual first person voice in “The Host,” and grew excited about the prospect of using the first person point-of-view in my own work. By the same token, you can bet my female characters are going to be strong and capable, and the romantic relationships equal. Finally, I have to thank the ghosts that lived in my basement while I was growing up. They were terrifying.

88 - OS BOOK CLUB

I wanted to write a book that didn’t force any of these subjects into the plot, but that wasn’t afraid to discuss them either. OS: What was your inspiration for writing the “Crossing Death” series? Do you share any personality traits with your main characters? RC: The entire “Crossing Death” series was inspired by two very vivid dreams I had. In those dreams, I played Edmund (the main character). As an interesting side note, “Death of the Body” actually ends exactly where the first of my dreams ended, complete with the very last line of the book.

OS: What inspired you to write NA fiction? RC: I didn’t actually set out to write an NA book. I wanted to write a novel specifically for adults but that could relate to readers of all ages. I wanted to bridge the gap between “Young Adult” and “Adult,” and as it turns out, that’s exactly what “New Adult” does. I view NA the same way I view YA literature: I don’t believe it’s a genre or a reading level, but in its purest form, is solely based on the age of the main characters in the book. For the majority of my story, my main character is 21. Because of his age, he is experiencing the transition into adulthood that allows me, as a writer, to approach subjects that typically wouldn’t be appropriate for YA readers. I wanted to write about the struggle of living alone for your first time, self acceptance and discovery, college life, alcohol and drug abuse, sexuality, religion, and politics (all those subjects we’re not supposed to discuss in polite company).

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

RC: One of my favorite quotes about horror fiction is (paraphrased), “Horror explicates the darkness at the reader’s soul.” I believe that dark literature is popular because we learn something about ourselves not only by becoming involved with the protagonist, but also specifically by becoming involved with the antagonist. Take vampires for instance. They are immortal, powerful, sexy, alluring, unafraid, and even predatory versions of human beings. Vampires overcome our universal fears of death, of isolation, of being powerless, and most importantly, of not being sexy enough!

Of course, there were plot holes to fill in, and things that made sense in the dream that I had to work around when re-imagining the story, but many of the details in the book (including Max the dog, Mother Tree, and the test on the hillside in Part 1 that was meant to weed out magical people), all happened in the dream exactly as they are described in the book. So, in a way, I feel like this series was given to me by some higher power. I just hope I can do it justice.

When we examine the antagonist in a dark story, we find little pieces of our fears and ourselves. I believe this is what allows me, as a dark author, to show you something about yourself that you don’t want others to know. I get to tantalize the dark side that is in your very own heart. And expressing that is exactly why dark fiction is fascinating.

Since I played Edmund in the dream, […] there are many characteristics that, I hope, we share. Edmund is very loyal, but he is flawed, and those are two characteristics that I see in myself. I also write myself into all of my characters a little bit, or, at least, characteristics that I would like to have. Nicholas’s confidence, for example, or Linda Rose’s cunning (maybe that isn’t evident in book one. Teasers are included in this interview, ha!). I relate to each of the characters in some way ... but I suppose that could be said of any author. Our characters become family.

RC: I’ll reiterate that I do not believe that YA and NA classifications are a representation of the reading level of the book. It all has to do with the age of the main characters in the book. You can see the success that [both] YA and NA [literature] have with adult readers by looking at some of the most popular YAL books today: “Harry Potter,” “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent.”

OS: Why are young adults fascinated with darker fiction?

OS: Why do older adults read YA and NA fiction?

I think a piece of the darkness that every adult carries is the regret of missed opportunities in childhood and teenage years. Some of these aren’t big regrets, but more like, “I should have stood up for myself,” or “Why did I care what that person thought of me in school.”

OS BOOK CLUB - 89

YA and NA fiction allows us to immerse into the life of a character who understands those regrets and who is living them right now. We can watch these characters struggle, sometimes stumbling and sometimes overcoming. YA books have a way of validating our regrets. In a way, I believe these stories give us a second chance. As an author, I know that’s why I write them.

BEST FRIENDS - 91

As the Florida weather begins to cool down, now is the perfect time to grab the leash, hit the road, and let your dog go exploring in the great outdoors. This October, why not take a journey with those you love and bring your furry friend along for the ride? You and your pooch are sure to love our list of the top five dog-friendly day trips that are great getaways for the fall season.

DE LEON SPRINGS STATE PARK Just an hour north of Orlando, De Leon Springs is a hidden treasure of wildlife in Central Florida. This is a wonderful place for you and your dog to find rest and relaxation, as you enjoy the quiet expanses of shade trees and perhaps even a delicious picnic with friends. The park offers a half-mile paved nature trail, passing through scenic woodlands that serve as the home to a wide diversity of animal life and even a cypress tree that is more than 500 years old. With these various ways to get back to nature, De Leon Springs is a serene escape from the monotony of everyday life.

HISTORIC MOUNT DORA This charming town located in Central Florida is more than just a shopping and dining destination. With dog-friendly shopping and restaurants, Mount Dora is one of our top choices for fall day trips with your pup. Stroll the streets with your leashed friend, and even dine in an outdoor restaurant together. Mount Dora also features celebrated dog parks, including an off-leash park with three separate areas for large, small, and medium-sized dogs.

BLUE SPRING STATE PARK If you love underwater wildlife but are looking to spend an afternoon with your four-legged friend, Blue Spring State Park is the perfect outing for a brisk fall day. This park is a designated Manatee Refuge, and the waters are filled with a growing population of West Indian Manatees. With over 2,600 acres, there is plenty of room for your dog to run wild and free after hours of manatee fun. The park also features a hiking trail through the lush environment of Blue Spring.

DOWNTOWN ST. AUGUSTINE Florida’s oldest city is known for its exciting and educational tours, but there are also many tours that are perfect for your pooch. On the second Saturday of each month, the city of St. Augustine hosts a “Pup Crawl,” in which you and your dog can discover the city’s history while exploring the timeless streets of downtown St. Augustine. After a day in town, you can head down to one of St. Augustine’s pristine beaches with your pup and finish the day with your toes—and paws—in the sand.

ALDERMAN’S FORD NATURE PRESERVE If you want to escape from your everyday environment with your dog, Alderman’s Ford Nature Preserve is one of the best day trip destinations. Located an hour and a half outside of Orlando and only 40 minutes from Tampa, this preserve is a break from the ordinary. The hiking trails are surrounded by the whitewater of the Alafia River, which rushes over limestone boulders with aweinspiring majesty. Lose yourself in the sanctuary of ancient live oaks and wooded wonders, and let your dog find the joys of nature once again. <
