FRENCHMAN’S REEF & MORNING STAR MARRIOTT Experience “The Reef Life” in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands By Riesa Pascal To have the opportunity to travel to the Virgin Islands was an unforgettable experience all on its own, but to combine that with luxurious accommodations at Marriott’s cliffside retreat was a decision that took my vacation to an entirely new level of comfort and pleasure. It was there, in the heart of St. Thomas, where my companions and I experienced the incomparable benefits of “The Reef Life” travel package which starts at an astonishingly low $399 per night. When travelers book The Reef Life package, they will receive: - Water-view accommodations (a three-night minimum stay is required) - $200 Adventure Center credit to use on an excursion - $100 spa credit for Lazule Sea Spa - $150 food and beverage credit to use on-site True to their word, my gorgeous water-view room overlooked the sailboat-dotted Charlotte Amalie Harbor in downtown St. Thomas. Affectionately known as “The Reef,” the iconic Frenchman’s Reef & Morning Star Marriott Beach Resort is just a moments drive (or ferry ride) away from the island’s best attractions. Nothing makes this more abundantly clear than waking up to the sight of a luxurious cruise ship gliding past your window to the island’s bustling port located nearby. Needless to say, I was excited about my first visit to the US Virgin Islands and I was honored to have arrived on the 100th anniversary of the U.S. Virgin Islands as an American territory. To celebrate the momentous occasion, my companions and I enjoyed the Centennial military parade in downtown St. Thomas as well as a joyous Centennial Ceremony. The pride and cheer of locals in attendance was beautiful to witness and I was reminded of how fortunate we were to have traveled to the beautiful and exoctic island of St. Thomas without losing the convenience and comforts of traveling within America. Everything from being able to travel without a passport to spending U.S. Dollars without the hassle of currency exchange makes St. Thomas an easy vacation getaway for American travelers. As mentioned above, The Reef Life package also comes with a $200 adventure credit to use on a diverse variety of exciting excursions. As the pulse of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas encourages its travelers to explore the very best of the area through a mix of activities that are available. Just one of the many highlights for me was the St. Thomas Cultural and Historical Sightseeing Tour where we explored some of the island’s iconic and picturesque sights including Drake’s Seat, 99 steps, Beacon Point, and Magen’s Bay Lookout. After reenergizing with authentic Caribbean food at Cuzzin’s Restaurant in the historic downtown district, we were off again to Frenchtown Brewing Company in the bohemian fishing village of Frenchtown. There we got to sample small-

batch, tap only craft beers made locally in St. Thomas. With average temperatures ranging in the 80s year-round, it was practically mandatory to swim through the island’s beautiful turquoise waters and get up close and personal with exotic marine life during a snorkeling excursion to St. John. For those of us who wanted to keep the thrills going long after the sun had set, night kayaking proved to be the perfect excursion and it was located just steps away from the resort. Through clear bottom kayaks retrofitted with powerful LED nights, we explored the harbor filled with tarpon, rays, sea turtles and other marine life that swam past our kayaks. One may need a little R&R after experiencing so much adventure out, about, and around the island! With $100 worth of spa credits for Lazule Sea Spa, The Reef Life package will ensure you get that relaxation while you receive the ultimate spa experience in a setting with spectacular Caribbean views. Frenchman’s Reef ’s ultra luxurious Lazule Sea Spa and Salon is the premiere boutique spa experience in the US Virgin Islands. The spa embraces the power of the sea with use of marine extracts from oceanic plant life to restore balance and beauty through innovative skin and body treatments that are rich in vital trace minerals and complex nourishment. Their goal is to provide guests with a rich experience that will leave them

feeling renewed and refreshed in a beautiful, tranquil setting. Lazule Sea Spa features 8 treatment rooms including a couples suite, a steam room and a wet room with a Vichy Shower. The spa also features a jacuzzi, cold plunge and a private spa pool with chaise lounge chairs, poolside cabanas and spectacular views of the Charlotte Amalie Harbor. The welcoming oasis also boasts a full service salon featuring hair, makeup, nail services and retail shopping to enhance your relaxation experience. Although there are endless options for authentic and delicious local dining around the island, I would be remiss not to mention just a few of the six on-site restaurants and bars available for resort guests to enjoy. Best of all, The Reef Life package has you covered with a $150 food and beverage credit to use on property. First, I strongly suggest you fuel up for the day with a breakfast at Aqua Terra which showcases spectacular views of the famous harbor through dramatic ceiling to floor windows. A multitude of breakfast options all under $30 included everything from buffet to continental to grab-ngo dining and more. For a laid-back meal with more incredible ocean views, my companions and I enjoyed lunch at Coco Joe’s. The beachside cafe offered Caribbean bites, Spanish tapas, soups, salads and some of the best paella on the

island. A dinner at Sunset Grill served up both classic St. Thomian views along with freshly caught seafood, hearty sides, decadent desserts and traditional favorites including pan-roasted chicken, seared scallops, and lamb with a rosemary reduction. Our final evening at the property was brought to a close with an oyster farewell dinner at the award-winning Havana Blue restaurant. After enjoying a perfect fusion of Latin American and Caribbean favorites, it was time to say our goodbyes to the breathtaking property that served as our exciting Caribbean refuge for several unforgettable days. Fortunately, The Reef Life package runs from now through December 22, 2017 so there is still plenty of time for you to sign up and experience your own island adventure. For booking, travelers can visit Frenchman’s Reef ’s website and enter promo code SO9. A sunny seaside retreat, St. Thomas is truly ideal for every type of traveler from the laid-back beachgoer to the adrenaline junkie craving an island-hopping adventure. With first-rate facilities, breathtaking views, and unforgettable adventures, there’s no doubt that Frenchman’s Reef is the one and only place to start your journey to discovering what “The Reef Life” is all about. IF DYNAMIC EXPERIENCES ARE DECIDING FACTORS IN YOUR NEXT VACATION, LOOK NO FURTHER THAN THE SAN JUAN MARRIOTT & STELLARIS CASINO.

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE

SAN JUAN MARRIOTT RESORT & STELLARIS CASINO Let’s just call this a vacation!

The beachfront resort is conveniently situated five miles from Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport, which means relaxation is just steps away from the very moment you land. The resort sits proud and regal over its prestigious location on Condado Beach and offers travelers a lucrative combination of adventure, local culture, and the opportunity to create lifelong memories. Though this trip was my second visit to Puerto Rico, it marked my first time as a guest of the San Juan Marriott and I was eager to experience firsthand the reputation that precedes it. Fortunately, I didn’t have to wait long as I arrived at the resort in under 15 minutes and was quickly checked into one of their 527 sophisticated guest rooms and luxurious suites. I stepped out onto my balcony overlooking breathtaking city and beachfront views that could only be visible from the resort which is located in the heart of Condado. From the physical decor to the air around me, the feeling of luxurious Caribbean elegance was unmistakable, and immediately I knew that this vacation would be like no other.

By Riesa Pascal

The courage to pull myself away from those stunning views required something extra special such as welcome cocktails with my companions at what’s been dubbed one of the most exhilarating bars and dance floors in the Caribbean! By day, San Juan Marriott’s Red Coral Lounge is a great location to grab a cup of joe while taking advantage of the lobby’s free Wi-Fi. By evening, resort guests mix and mingle with local crowds that dance the night away to live music and Latin beats. After enjoying our welcome cocktails at the bustling lounge (which features decor inspired by the island’s top local artists and sculptors), we were off to Santurce, also known as Puerto Rico’s art and music district. Throughout Santurce, travelers are met with numerous options for tasty gastronomic dining including Lote 23, an outdoor food space divided into four terraces that brings together 16 culinary concepts including a rotational kiosk. My companions

and I enjoyed a local beer, the smells of Puerto Rican favorites, and colorful murals by local artists as we strolled through the festive food court and took in all the ‘El Lote’ had to offer. I could hardly contain my excitement the following morning as we set out to experience something that my other Puerto Rican vacation hadn’t made easily accessible—the cultural and historically rich city of Old San Juan. As the oldest city in Puerto Rico, San Juan was full of age-old beauty and historic tales. The 475 year-old neighborhood is a 47-square-mile area located on the western half of the island. For several hours we soaked up just a few of Puerto Rico’s many incredible attractions including everything from colorful buildings, monuments and graffiti artwork to shops and friendly roadside vendors. One of the notable highlights was the popular tourist attraction, Castillo San Cristobal, also known as Fort San Cristóbal. The site and our spirited tour guide brought us back in time as we climbed through hidden passages and explored antique weaponry used to protect the transportation of gold and silver at the historic Spanish port. After we had our fill of Puerto Rican history and culture, we headed to lunch and prepared to have our fill of homemade Puerto Rican cuisine! We dined at Cafe El Punto, one of the many exquisite restaurants of San Juan and it was there that I checked yet another item off my list of must-have experiences in Puerto Rico. That wish was simply to try mofongo, the island’s renowned fried plantains dish! Needless to say, I was far from disappointed as the taste of Puerto Rico came alive through a mix of seasonings that made each bite a delight to the palate. As I sampled my companion’s dishes and sipped a refreshing, yet ridiculously large strawberry margarita, I quickly found out that Puerto Rican culture includes incredibly generous portions in both food and beverages! Fortunately, my appetite ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM |

returned by dinner time and I was able to enjoy another exceptionally unique dining experience with my travel companions. It was nonstop laughter and oneon-one foodie fun as we took part in a thrilling cooking class at Cocina Abierta. The passion Chef Karina Santiago and her team shared for their craft was evident as they taught us how the cooking techniques, flavors, traditions, and culture of the island can come together for an unmistakably authentic meal. The following morning, I fueled up with a hearty breakfast at the resort’s La Vista Latin Grill before embarking on a morning excursion to El Yunque National Forest. The name is attributed to an Indian spirit that translates into “Forest of Clouds,” which is also the name of the main mountain peak in the forest. The only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, El Yunque spans 28,000 acres and welcomes 600,000 visitors a year. It was there that we experienced La Mina Trail which is one of the most popular hikes of the rainforest. The path took us through the dense evergreen forest containing 240 native tree species (26 found only at El Yunque), and masses of vines, 50 native orchids, epiphytes, giant ferns, and mosses. The hundreds of animal and plant species were a sight to behold as we trekked only the paved trail that ended at La Mina Falls, a beautiful 35 foot waterfall. Upon arrival, we stripped down to our bathing suits and joined dozens of other hikers for a refreshing swim in the natural pool as cool waters cascaded over the rocks around us. Though we could’ve easily spent the whole day at El Yunque, there were more adventures to be had back on property such as enjoying the San Juan Marriott’s two-level pool and swim-up bar before taking part in a traditional pig roast at La Vista Latin Grill. Pig roasts are a staple in Puerto Rican cuisine and culture and we relished in the authentic cookout with mouth watering trimmings and a side of gorgeous resort views. Though we drank, laughed and dined until the sun had faded into the evening sky, it was clear that our night was far from over. In fact, one might say the real fun had only just begun! San Juan Marriott offers one of the liveliest casinos on the island, and we were not about to let that experience pass us by. The 24-hour, 12,700-square-foot Stellaris Casino offers Caribbean stud poker, blackjack, roulette, craps, baccarat and more than four hundred slot machines. In addition to boasting the greatest number of penny slot machines in Puerto Rico and the highest betting limits on the island, the Stellaris Casino also provides complimentary $20 match play coupons at check-in. With modern guest rooms, multiple pools, on property dining options, a non-stop casino, a happening lobby bar, and a stretch of golden beach, it goes without saying that the San Juan Marriott caters to every traveler’s indulgence. Simply put, my stay on property led me to experience an authentic vacation in the truest, most pure sense of the word and I’d encourage my fellow Floridians and travelers to do the same. Come and experience the exotic nature, life and culture of a historical Caribbean island with the convenience of traveling within America. While you’re here, stop by Ocean Club Spa for a variety of relaxing treatments including scrubs, wraps, facials, manicures, pedicures, massages, and more. Take advantage of yoga, aqua aerobics, cardiovascular equipment, tennis courts and even personal trainers all available through the Ocean Club Fitness Center. Expand your palate as you enjoy a variety of restaurants and bars that deliver the unmistakable flavors of Puerto Rico. With the warmth and hospitality of the Puerto Rican people and the Marriott brand, a charming vacation awaits you at the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino and I for one can’t wait to return.

DESIGN

DESIGN TRENDS Come to the Dark Side.... Be stark, be dramatic. Dark painted walls are in this fall. We’ve seen them in movies, in celebrity homes, and now they’re coming to the spotlight of interior fashion. Dark painted wooden walls are sleek, modern and sophisticated. Good for the sophisticated person smitten with the dark side, and who also likes depth and drama. Black or dark wooden walls look best for this look, but you can also have a similar effect with black painted walls, or black tile. You can also accent the darkness with strokes of white, perhaps white framed photos, or wall art. Don’t overdue it however, too much white can distract your visitors from the rich powerful dark color. To achieve this look, go for a Deep Onyx or Black Flame pantone.

GO BIG FOR YOUR HOME

Oversized furniture, matte countertops, oh my! Fall is here, and as the holidays are fast approaching, it’s that time of year where we bring out those pumpkins, some hot cocoa, and maybe even those sweaters (weather permitting). Interior styles for the fall season make way for the holiday spirit. Let’s freshen up on a couple different things you could stylize in your own home! Matte is coming to our appliances. Yes, you read right. Many different appliance stores across Orlando are stocking up with fresh, new countertops, cabinets, stoves, refrigerators, microwaves all in matte. With countertops as soft

SWISH SWISH

Velvet fabrics swish their way in style Dark velvet is ideal for fall decor. It’s soothing, it’s luxury, it’s welcoming. Not many fabrics that welcome fall and winter look good in furniture, but velvet pulls it off so well. The mixture of smooth metals, ceramics and rough natural textures gives visual enticement and overall tactile coziness to your home. And if velvet furniture just so happens to not be in your budget, velvet pillows and throw overs have the same effect.

and gorgeouse as these, you are bringing a more modern taste to the kitchen. Big cushions, big comfortors, big pillows, big furniture. This is absolutely necessary for the sweater weather season. Big couches in general give off an inviting feeling to get snuggled up with your quilt, pet, or significant other. Updated looks such as these help you enjoy the season that much more and say “sayonara” to those outdated designs of 2016!

BARFLY

From homemadefoodjunkie.com

BARFLY Ingredients • 1/4 cup Malibu rum with coconut liqueur • 1/2 cup pineapple juice • 2 Tbsp grenadine (to make the bottom of the glass red) Garnish with: • 2 maraschino cherries • 1 slice of pineapple

Recipe - Put 3-4 ice cubes in the bottom of a glass. - Pour the pineapple juice and the rum over the ice. - Pour the grenadine slowly down one side of the glass (pouring too fast will mix the grenadine in and you won’t get the color separation). - Stick 2 cherries and a pineapple chunk on a toothpick for a garnish. Enjoy!

BRONZE KINGDOM Orlando gallery-museum Bronze Kingdom showcases African art, culture and history with largest collection of African bronze sculptures in world One of Orlando’s newest attractions provides visitors a glimpse at the other side of the world and back in time – all through the artistry of African tribal art. Bronze Kingdom is an 8,000-square-foot gallerymuseum showcasing approximately 300 pieces of a more than 2,000-piece collection – the largest collection of rare African bronze sculptures in the world. Founded in 2017 by collector, philanthropist and entrepreneur Rawlvan R. Bennett, Bronze Kingdom offers visitors the opportunity to view and purchase unique African tribal art pieces with artistic and historical significance. Bennett acquired the artwork over the past 37 years directly from African leaders through cultivated relationships and respectful negotiations building schools, hospitals and bridges for West African communities. “Collecting this artwork has been a life’s passion for me,” said Bennett. “The beauty, history and cultural significance of each piece has brought great meaning in my life. Through Bronze Kingdom, we hope others will have the opportunity to experience and gain insight into this authentic art that is still largely unknown.” Bronze Kingdom showcases an expansive variety of African bronze, beaded and wood sculptures from 29 African countries including Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, and Ghana

30

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

All the art on display at Bronze Kingdom, as well as many other pieces in the collection, are available for purchase. As part of any purchase, Bronze Kingdom will deliver, install and provide maintenance on the piece, leaving collectors little left to do but admire their rare piece of African history. Purchases can be shipped worldwide. “My wish is for our patrons to learn the history of the African people,” said Bennett. “To understand that African Americans are not only descendants of slaves. Slavery is a part of our history, but it is not the whole story. Our story begins with our ancestors in Africa who were Kings and Queens, and our legacy is told through the stories of their African artifacts that we will now call African Art.” The gallery-museum is open to collectors, institutions and the general public for sales, educational tours, cultural programs and exclusive events. Admission is $10 for adults, and $5 for children under 12. Bronze Kingdom is located at 8249 Parkline Boulevard, Suite 400 in Orlando, Fla. Fall fave colors Ditch the summer neons, it’s time to embrace natural neutrals. Neutrals are available to compliment every skin tone and play a part in every color. Browns and nudes are especially appealing and look professional. When it comes to metallics, avoid silver and go with a gold. If a darker look suits you, vampy colors are always approved. Try a maroon or cherry red. Blue can be tricky, but try to find grey or purple tones, like navy. If ever in question, look for a warm tone that will compliment your most natural or darker wintery outfits.

Planning time to achieve perfect hair can be stressful, especially when it comes down to an already hectic week. For business or play, a relaxing 20-40 minute blowout could be the remedy. Appropriately cared for, a blowout can last from three days up to a week. To achieve flawless results don’t worry about having to hunt down a blow dry bar. Skip the cut and color at any salon for a basic wash and dry. While this seems obtainable at home, going to a salon ensures quality products and professional methods. A

lavish scalp massage will also increase blood flow to your hair follicles for growth. A blowout typically involves styling with a round brush but can range from modest texture to curls. Performed at a salon, there should be no frizz or flyaways from unpracticed hands. In order to best care for a blowout, stylists recommend the simplest of tasks. Add volume by flipping your hair and teasing with hairspray, and minimize oiliness using a dry shampoo bar or spray. For around $30, it’s hard to beat a relaxing 4o minutes and runway ready hair.

What having your nails done really tells people Keeping up with your nails can be tedious, but what do they tell a person about you? Having constantly painted and perfectly sculpted nails often gives off the appearance of wealth and good time-keeping. It’s a known fact that it takes some extra dough and impeccable organization to make regularly scheduled nail appointments. On the other hand, chipped polish can be perceived as equally lazy and busy. Who has time for the little things like nail upkeep when you’ve got a business to run? Most people however, would agree that having no polish is better than chipped. Clean nails with an appropriate length show good hygiene and professionalism, often associated with a corporate setting. What do you think when noticing other people’s nails?

Finishing Touch Get that perfect look with Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Finishing Spray. For a firm hold and a natural finish, your hair is gonna look clean and not greasy. Imagine having that really nice, soft feeling in your hair again! $19 / Available at paulmitchell.com

With haircuts, especially with hairstyles today, the 60’s pompadour is coming back in its own modernized way. The late and great Elvis Presley rocked the look in his music career, and it has been a popular men’s hairstyle ever since. The key to maintaining that thick mane is to really get the sides short, and grow the top portion of your hair to that ideal length, wet it down, and mold it to that perfect shape. Apply a couple layers of Paul Mitchells hairspray, and you’re out the door looking sexy and slick like a brand new Ferrari. Another very popular hairstyle that seems to never really get out of style is the Caesar haircut. Men especially with curly hair can really pull this off. The horizontal straight cut bangs, the tight sideburns, and the textured layers have always complimented men’s hair, since those blunt short bangs really minimizes the appearance of a receding hairline. That’s one of the main reasons why it’s so popular. It’s the typical go-to in today’s hair looks. Tapered hairstyles really give that illusion of a fade, but instead of using actual clippers, barbers would use scissors to shorten those edges and

48

| STYLETOME.COM

make them skin tight. With the tapered look you can achieve a variety of looks, have some texture up top, slick it back all the way, or part it to the side. There’s many different options you could do and still look your absolute best. The bigger the hair the bigger the personality. The mohawk is no exception. It has come a long way since its booming debut in the punk scene. All mohawk hairstyles feature a single strip of hair down the center of the scalp with shaved sides. Different styles sprout with the strip of hair. Ethnic hair can pull off the best mohawks because of the thickness and texture. It could be dyed in any color and would still look good. And let’s not forget thick stripped mohawks, with straight shaved lines on the side--sexy! With great hair comes great opportunities. Maintain your masculinity and your pride with a healthy head of hair. Don’t forget to always check your hair before walking out that door because great hair makes the best first impressions.

CELEBRITY SOUP

?! Celebrities Whose Real Names Will Shock You! By Riesa Pascal

...and the surprising stories behind their stage names! You might think you’ve never heard of Maurice Joseph Micklewhite, but perhaps the name Michael Caine rings a bell? You may swear up and down you’ve never seen a movie starring Mark Sinclair Vincent, but I’m willing to bet you’re familiar with The Fast and the Furious star Vin Diesel. Have you ever heard a song by Declan Patrick McManus? No? Maybe because you’re more used to the stage name Elvis Costello. It’s quite a common practice for celebrities to go by names that differ from the moniker given to them at birth, but not every stage name is as obvious as Ice Cube or 50 Cent. Take a look at the real names behind some of your favorite A-list celebrities.

50

| STYLETOME.COM

CELEBRITY SOUP

LOUIS C.K. The stand-up comedian and actor was born Louis Szekely which is pronounced “See-kay.” His stage name is actually just an easier way to say his last name! Clever, huh?

JAMIE FOXX Eric Marlon Bishop changed his name to the gender-ambiguous Jamie in order to get a better set time when he was doing stand up as women were often called first. Adding the last name Foxx was a reference to one of Jaime’s favorite sitcom stars, Sanford & Son’s Red Foxx.

STEVIE WONDER The legendary Stevie Wonder was born Steveland Hardaway Judkins. As a child, many people were astounded by his ability to play numerous instruments and sing at the same time which led to them calling Stevie “A Little Wonder”.

GENE SIMMONS KISS rockstar Gene Simmons was born Chaim Witz in Israel. After immigrating to America, Chaim changed his name to the easier to pronounce Eugene and took his mother’s surname of Klein. Eventually Gene Klein adopted “Gene Simmons” as a stage name.

BRUNO MARS The Grammy-award winner Peter Gene Hernandez was given the name Bruno by his father as he was a chubby baby and resembled the wrestler Bruno Sammartino. The singer later added Mars to the end as he reportedly said, “A lot of girls say I’m out of this world, so I was like I guess I’m from Mars.”

MARILYN MONROE Few know that this platinum blonde bombshell was born Norma Jeane Mortenson. She was later baptised as Norma Jeane Baker and eventually began modeling under the names Jean Norman and Mona Monroe. She only legally changed her name to Marilyn Monroe in March 1956, when she was already a star.

MILEY CYRUS Although this superstar was named Destiny Hope Cyrus at birth, her nickname “Smiley Miley” caught on so much that she legally changed her name to Miley Ray Cyrus at 15 years old.

EMMA STONE Emily Jean Stone changed her first name to Emma because of her obsession with the Spice Girls, particularly Baby Spice whose real name is Emma Lee Bunton.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG Why did Caryn Johnson change her name to Whoopi Goldberg? According to an interview with Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, the reason was because she’s a “farter.”

REESE WITHERSPOON The Legally Blonde star and Oscar winner has what is perhaps the most simple stage name! She was actually born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon with Reese being her mother’s maiden name.

DON’T MISS THE BEAT

DON’T MISS THE BEAT by Courtney Caggiano

Summer may be fading, but on September 29th things will be heating up once again as Enrique Iglesias takes the stage at Amway Center in Orlando. This year, Iglesias is returning to the sunshine state with Miami’s own international superstar, Pitbull. After teaming up for their first tour together in 2011, Iglesias and his most compatible music personality have joined forces to shake up the night with their iconic latin flair.

From their tour’s launch in June, the duo has gained a position on Billboard’s list of top-grossing tours of 2017, earning the second-highest amount during the first leg of touring out of all international tours. Currently traveling the road through their 35 concert stops, Iglesias and Pitbull reached over $18 million within the first four weeks of the tour, including two nights of performances in Madison Square Garden.

Although Iglesias is famous for his own captivating live performances, he seems to have found a co-headliner who takes his sold-out shows to the next level. The Grammy Award-winning sensations have both entranced audiences on their own, with multi-platinum albums and skyrocketing ticket sales, but they have taken the latin world by storm as a combined act.

Perhaps the most exciting attraction that draws audiences to Iglesias’ concerts is the unexpected surprises that the singer throws into his shows. Who could forget Iglesias’ iconic live version of “Hero,” during which he would sing to a woman in the audience and leave her with a kiss? Even at his Los Angeles performance in June, Iglesias took an opportunity to teach the crowd a little Spanish before his song, “Cuando Me Enamoro.” Now, with Pitbull along for the ride, there’s no telling what Iglesias will bring to the party at his enthralling set in Orlando.

With 100 million albums worldwide and a long list of latin music awards including Latin Grammys, Iglesias has become a master of engaging his fans with music that transcends both culture and language and creates a spirit of energy and vibrancy to make the singer’s live tour a not-to-bemissed event.

After Puerto Rican Luis Fonsi’s smash hit “Despacito” exploded Top 40 radio with Spanish spice—the first Spanish-language tune to climb to No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart since “Macarena”— it’s no surprise that tickets to Iglesias’ Orlando tour stop are selling out fast. Iglesias and Pitbull will be joined by latin boy band CNCO, winners of the first season of La Banda, a new Simon Cowellcreated talent series produced by Ricky Martin.

One thing is certain: Iglesias is sure to liven up Central Florida with his charttopping latin hits. Enjoy the night as Enrique serenades you with songs like “I Like It,” “Bailando,” and “Duele el

At the heart of this high-performance sports car is a 515 kW (700 hp) biturbo flat engine. Weighing in at 1,470 kg with a full fuel tank, the lightweight two-seater accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. The rear-wheel drive Coupé has a top speed of 340 km/h, and with its near-motorsport drive technology, the new 911 GT2 RS trumps its 3.6-litre predecessor by 59 kW (80 hp) and achieves a torque of 750 Newton metres (an increase of 50 Nm). The engine builds on that 3.8-litre in the 911 Turbo S at 427 kW (580 hp). In order to increase performance, large turbochargers push an increased volume of process air into the combustion chambers. A new additional cooling system delivers optimum cooling at peak loads and, at very high temperatures, sprays the charge-air cooler with water. This causes the gas temperature to fall in the overpressure range and ensures optimum power output, even under extreme conditions. The customised GT seven-speed double-clutch transmission (PDK) in the new GT2 RS enables power to be transferred with uninterrupted traction. What’s more, the specially developed exhaust system is made from extra-lightweight titanium, weighs around seven kilograms less than the system used in the 911 Turbo and delivers an emotional sound without precedent. For the first time ever, Porsche Design is celebrating the debut of the high-performance sports car by releasing a special-issue watch. Offering a nod to the world of motorsport, the 911 GT2 RS watch is exclusively available to owners of the new vehicle and can only be ordered in conjunction with the new GT model at a Porsche Centre from June 30, 2017. Racing chassis for outstanding dynamic cornering Discipline in sport means mastering every detail. And in the world of super sports cars, cornering speeds are on another level. The 911 GT2 RS reaches these speeds thanks to its flawless racing chassis with rear-axle steering and Ultra High Performance (UHP) tyres. Like all GT sports cars, the new top model features a specially calibrated PSM with a Sport mode that is tailored to provide optimal driving dynamics. Powerful air intakes and outlets and the imposing rear wing emphasise that the vehicle’s aerodynamics have mastered both form and design. The large, wide wheels (265/35 ZR 20 at the front and 325/30 ZR 21 at the rear) ensure outstanding braking and cornering forces. The 911 GT2 RS features Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) as standard. The front wings, wheel housing vents, outer shells on the Sport Design exterior mirrors, air intakes on the rear side sections and parts of the rear end are made from carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFR), as are many of the interior components. The bonnet is also made from carbon to make the vehicle as

lightweight as possible, while the standard trim roof is made from magnesium. Both body parts have a wide lateral swage line. A truly sporty interior The passenger compartment of the 911 GT2 RS is dominated by red Alcantara, black leather and interior parts with a carbonweave finish as standard. The GT2 RS sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles enables quick and sporty gear changes. Drivers and passengers experience the driving dynamics of the highperformance sports car in full bucket seats with a carbon-weave finish. As in every 911, the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) is the central control unit for audio, navigation and communication. The Connect Plus module and Porsche Track Precision app are also included as standard, enabling detailed recording, display and analysis of driving data on a smartphone. The optional Chrono Package expands the PCM functions to include performance display, which can be used to display, save and evaluate track times. The package also includes a stopwatch on the switch panel with both analogue and digital display. What’s more, the Chrono Package on the 911 GT2 RS comes with a lap trigger. Using the Porsche Track Precision app in conjunction with external markers on a start/finish straight, this lap trigger enables drivers to record lap times with a high level of precision. Exclusive watch to accompany the car: Porsche Design 911 GT2 RS Chronograph Porsche Design has teamed up with Porsche Motorsport to develop the 911 GT2 RS Chronograph for customers of the new super sports car. It is reserved exclusively for 911 GT2 RS drivers. At its heart is the first clock movement developed by Porsche Design, the product of three year’s work. The calibre 01.200 includes a flyback function, a load-path-optimised movement bridge and an official COSC certificate of authenticity. The timepiece housing is made of lightweight titanium. The flyback function is inspired by motorsport and represents a special feature of the Porsche watch. On a traditional chronograph, the buttons must be pressed three times in order to measure consecutive time intervals: The first press stops the chronograph, the second resets it and the third restarts the measuring process. On chronographs with a flyback function, these processes happen automatically and in rapid succession. The stop function and the ongoing time display are clearly separated using yellow markings. Many of the details on the timepiece are based on the high-performance sports car. The tungsten winding rotor is modelled on the rims of the 911 GT2 RS. The clock face is made of carbon, while the design of the time display matches the instrument cluster and the tachometer. The 911 GT2 RS and its watch counterpart are exclusively available at Porsche Centres worldwide. The vehicle and watch are produced individually in line with customer wishes and delivered together.

HEMP. Hemp isn’t the type of marijuana that gets you high (otherwise your hemp-seed juices would have a much different post-workout effect…).

IN THE KNOW

Pay attention this fall, because hemp

is hitting the runways. Well, it has been for years. Derek Lam, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, YSL, Versace… the list goes on. High-caliber fashion houses have been blending hemp in their textiles for years, and for good reason. Hemp is sustainable, biodegradable, affordable and eco-friendly.

.

But is it legal in the United States, federally? Yes. Well, sort of. It’s legal to import hemp products from other hemp-producing countries. Hemp isn’t the type of marijuana that gets you high (otherwise your hempseed juices would have a much different post-workout effect…). You see, hemp is different than its sister strains of cannabis; it’s a particular strain of cannabis which has been genetically bred to produce male plants, which contain little or no THC (the psychotropic compound in the cannabis plant). Hemp is stalky, durable and fastgrowing, and has been used for hundreds of years as a sustainable fabric. In fact, hemp crops were brought over from Britain to Colonial America in the 1600s and relied upon heavily for production of sails for ships due to its durability, resistance to decay and climate adaptability. Bob Reilly, manufacturer of Florida-based hemp clothing company Sativa Fashion Brand and co-owner of Highlife Media is a staunch advocate for use of the sustainable fiber in all things from clothing to car interiors. While everyone is nail-biting over the legality of use of the cannabis that currently sits as a Schedule 1 narcotic, Bob is busy educating the public on the history of hemp and why it’s destined to rebound as one of the world’s most important industrial crops.

eco-friendly materials. Hemp leaves a small carbon footprint. It actually absorbs CO2, potentially reducing the overall carbon footprint. It requires less water and land use than cotton. It grows like a weed – well, it is a weed – so minimal care, fertilization and pesticide use is required. It strengthens fibers it is blended with, is more durable than cotton and gets softer with use. And been around a heck of a lot longer than your poly-blend tracksuit – the first historical recordation of hemp use was discovered off the coast of an ancient Chinese village dating back 10,000 years. So what are we waiting for? Well, the “legalization of marijuana” conversation will continue to complicate things. First, because hemp is a fast-growing male plant (and males love to spread their seeds), the states that have legalized marijuana are in a position to also regulate the growth of hemp crops, with the goal to keep them away from each other. Why? Because the coveted female plant – the “narcotic marijuana” – can turn hermaphrodite, or full-blown male – if exposed to other male plants. Even a small gust of wind can carry the unwanted pollen from hemp to carefully cultivated female cannabis crops, essentially destroying the salability of the crop. So, as our legal marijuana climate continues to expand, as does our need to commit endlessly to our ailing climate, we will need to set aside our differences and find a way to co-exist. And we can certainly look good doing it.

It’s a no-brainer that we are beyond being mildly concerned about our carbon footprint. It’s urgent at this point, and this is one of the biggest arguments hempadvocates – which include major fashion houses – relies upon when advocating their pro-hemp agenda. Do not confuse pro-hemp use with pro-legalization-ofmarijuana use. Generally those who tout the benefits of hemp are pressing a more important agenda – the use of sustainable,

UNLEASHING HOPE Stem cell therapy for pets

By Hannah Filiatreau Animals contribute to our happiness and health in many ways. They can alleviate stress and have been proven to increase our oxytocin or “love hormone” levels. Some pets even assist with or warn of mental and physical health episodes. These facts considered, there should be no surprise that Americans spent $66 billion to keep their pets healthy and happy in 2016; according to the APPA. One up and coming treatment being spent more on is stem cell therapy. A form of regenerative medicine, stem cell therapy is most commonly used to treat arthritis in animals, as well as a wide range of other ailments. “Regenerative Medicine is a broad definition for innovative medical therapies that will enable the body to repair, replace, restore and regenerate damaged or diseased tissues.” In humans stem cells are used for a variety of treatments, such as skin grafts, bone marrow transplants, and to treat specific types of cancer. One pioneer of stem cell research and therapy in animals is VetStem, a biopharma located in California. VetStem has chosen to use adipose stem cells, primarily known for fat storage, as they are multipurpose and regenerative. Choosing the type of stem cell is important as some can develop into more cells than others. VetStem Regenerative Medicine uses concentrated adult stem cells from the same animal to treat their traumatic or degenerative diseases. This can include bowed tendons, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis, and osteochondral defects in horses, dogs and cats. More recently, studies have been conducted involving slipped discs in animals a “shock absorber” that sits between vertebrae of the spine. Also found in humans, the degeneration of these discs often cause pinched nerves and sometimes paralysis. Procedures are completed at a local veterinarian’s office, and when conducted go as follows: “stem cells are extracted from the bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, or fat of either your pet or another animal of the same species. A veterinarian injects the stem cells into the diseased area, such as a knee joint damaged by osteoarthritis. The cells move to the inflamed or damaged tissue, suppress the inflammation, relieve pain, and cause new

62

| STYLETOME.COM

tissue to grow. This new tissue is more like the original tissue than the scar tissue that would typically grow in an untreated inflamed area.” By far the most common uses of the therapy is to treat osteoarthritis - a disease that will impact 80% of dogs and 60% of cats. If your pet suffers from osteoarthritis, a common occurrence with hip dysplasia, ask your veterinarian for more information. This treatment is not a cure all and can be expensive. On average, prices run between $2000 to $3000 but can be more depending on an animal’s needs. Stem cell therapies are arriving at many veterinarians across the country, pending business approval. Check with your local veterinarian to see what services are provided and whether your pet may be a candidate.

JOHN ELLIOTT LEIGHTON

Catastrophic Injuries. Medical Malpractice. Wrongful Death

The go-to lawyer for serious injury cases Aggressive. Thorough. Accomplished. Creative. Determined. Ethical. Respected. These are some of the words often used to describe serious injury attorney John Leighton. Leighton is unlike most lawyers. He doesn’t seek out cases; they seek him out. For over 30 years he has represented people who have been seriously injured and families of those killed by negligence. But his cases most don’t usually come from the public. They come from other lawyers. That’s because Leighton is referred the serious, complex and catastrophic cases from around the state and elsewhere in the country. He is seen as the go-to trial lawyer for major personal injury and death cases like medical malpractice, catastrophic trucking and car crash, resort/hotel/theme park, violent crime/ negligent security, traumatic brain injury and defective product cases. His cases are almost always referred by lawyers from Florida and around the world. Mr. Leighton fought for passage of the first parasailing safety law in the United States after his client’s daughter was killed while parasailing off Florida’s coast. It took seven years but the regulations finally passed in 2014. Known for his success in medical malpractice cases, Leighton’s track record in obtaining recoveries in Central Florida is remarkable. He won a record-setting $24.1 million verdict for a child who suffered a terrible medical mistake in Seminole County. Then he

obtained $9 million for a woman who was given improper anesthesia in the hospital, and $3 million for the Central Florida family whose mom bled to death from a doctor’s error. He followed that with a $24.3 million verdict for the family of an Orlando police officer who was killed at an ATM, won an $8 million award for the parents of a teenage girl killed on the turnpike, and recently recovered a $7.4 million verdict in Osceola County for a trucking crash. These are examples of why Leighton has developed a national reputation. He has been hired to handle cases in Georgia, Wisconsin, Indiana, North Carolina, Kentucky, Illinois and Texas. And while many of his cases garner media attention, most of the time Leighton’s clients are ordinary people who have suffered serious loss. Like the Orlando family of a teen who was killed in a drunken boating crash. That family hired Leighton, who obtained a $1.35 million recovery and saw the boater sent to prison for 6 years. And like the $3.5 million recovery he won for an Orlando motorcyclist who suffered a brain injury where the driver who hit him only had $10,000 in insurance. A board certified trial lawyer, Leighton is considered one of the foremost experts in negligent security litigation (people injured from a criminal assault) and child sex abuse. He wrote the 2-volume textbook, Litigating Premises Security Cases, lectures around the world, and was recent re-elected Chairman of the Inadequate Security Litigation of the American Trial Lawyers. He is past Chairman

of the organization’s Motor Vehicle, Highway and Premises Liability Section. As part of his commitment to give back to the legal community, Leighton has lectured to lawyers in over a dozen states and two other countries. Leighton is recognized by his peers as being at the very top of this his field. For 10 years he has been chosen as one of the Top 100 by Florida SuperLawyers, is included in Florida Trend magazine’s “Florida Legal Elite,” and selected 11 consecutive years for The Best Lawyers in America for Plaintiff ’s personal injury, medical malpractice and product liability litigation. Mr. Leighton loves helping people who have had terrible things happen to them, and seeks justice for his clients in the courts.

As a child, Harry grew up in a midsize town in Tennessee and delivered the afternoon newspaper in the married housing dormitories at Tennessee Technological University. Around the age of 10, his family moved to Signal Mountain, a bedroom community outside Chattanooga, to live with his Grandmother who had begun showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Harry became Junior (just prior to the premier of Dallas) and his mother cared for Mamaw for eight years as she progressed through dementia and became bedridden. After joining the U.S. Navy at 17, and coming to the Orlando Naval Training Center, Fireman Ducker attended the Electrician’s Mate “A” school, followed by Naval Nuclear Power School as Petty Officer Ducker. During the Navy’s extensive training, he met his future wife Laurie Weatherford, a new attorney at the old Orlando firm; Maguire, Voorhis, Wells and Wells. They were married in 1988 when he was stationed onboard the U.S.S. George Bancroft SSBN 643. The couple moved in with Laurie’s parents after her father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given six months to live. After caring for Parks in their home, the couple also inherited the care of her mother, Ann. For six years after her husband’s death, Ann lived with the family until complications made it necessary for her

to move into a nursing home. Ann stayed several years at the Mayflower in Winter Park, and enjoyed interaction with staff, friends and family. She said she enjoyed the Mayflower because there was always someone to talk to and, though she could not get around anymore, her true friends kept in close touch. While attending the Levin College of Law at the University of Florida, Aubrey insisted he would never practice divorce or draft wills. Ironically, those two areas now make up the bulk of his practice. Elder Law - Estate Planning, and Family Law and Guardianship make an interesting intersection illustrated by the law firm’s motto: “Compassionate, Caring Service for Your Family.” All of the experiences of his early life culminate to inform Aubrey’s active Collaborative Family Law practice. When crisis comes to families in Winter Park, the Law Offices of Aubrey Harry Ducker Jr. stand ready to assist with sound advice; seeking to preserve family relationships while effectively addressing real problems. After more than 17 years in practice, with offices in Winter Park and Orlando, Mr. Ducker is adept at solving problems effectively for clients in many areas and sometimes surprisingly different ways.

GEOFF HOATSON

Family First Firm Let’s get this out of the way - Geoff Hoatson is not a typical attorney and the Family First Firm is not your typical law firm. Geoff is innovating the way legal services are provided in Central Florida, especially when it comes to protecting seniors and their loved ones. He and his staff combine the latest technology with intense dedication and compassion for their clients. As an example, staff members regularly make in-home or facility visits and bring laptops with touch screens upon which their clients sign important documents. This is unique in the Elder Law community where the firm specializes in helping clients with wills and trusts, estate administration, veteran’s benefits, Medicaid qualification, and social security benefits. “Too often, attorneys treat their clients like an inconvenience” says Hoatson. “We recognize that our clients are our lifeblood and they are never treated as an interruption of our work – they are the purpose of our work.” Unlike most law firms which bill by the hour, the Family First Firm has adopted a fixed fee structure for all case types. Each client knows exactly how much his or her case will cost with no variables or hidden surprises. There are no invoices for telephone calls, appointments, or e-mails; and everything

is included from start to finish. Most importantly - their clients are loving it! In the last year, the Firm has won awards from the American Institute of Legal Counsel, The Expert Network, Lawyers of Distinction, and now Orlando Style for its outstanding reputation and satisfied clients. When someone is doing good work, word gets around and as the firm’s clientele has grown, so has the firm itself. In a short twelvemonth period, the firm swelled from four to ten members and relocated into its very own building in Colonial Town, a division of downtown Orlando. This growth has brought considerable expertise and an array of talents to the firm. For instance, there are four staff members fluent in Spanish and one in French. Above all, the firm is united by the vision of its founder – to make each visitor feel comfortable in the office, to provide the highest level of legal services, and to treat each client like their only client. NAYEF A. MUBARAK

Mubarak Law

“BUILD A WALL!” “MUSLIM BAN!” “IMMIGRATION REFORM!” These statements have been at the center of what is likely the most chaotic political climate to enter the world of U.S. immigration law in decades; however, Attorney Nayef A. Mubarak is cool, calm, and collected. When Mubarak isn’t roaming the immigration courts, he can be sighted at the Orlando International Airport working with local officials and activists to help facilitate the entry of Central Florida residents detained after the President’s first #MuslimBan was announced, as well as facilitating immigration workshops in several languages: English, Arabic and Spanish. Mubarak, the founding attorney of Mubarak Law, is a Brooklyn-born American; and he is the son of Palestinian American immigrants. As the son of immigrants, Mubarak experienced growing up in a nation that allows immigrants the life-changing experience of the American Dream, but at the cost of effective and legitimate representation. Both of which have been engrained in the Mubarak Law ethos. Nayef is a lifelong resident of Central Florida. At the age of 33, he has championed the immigration realm for over seven years. Graduating from the University of Central Florida with a Bachelor’s degree in Business and Finance, he went on to graduate from the Barry University School of Law in 2010. He

spent 6 years at NeJame Law, representing foreign nationals with investor visas , removal defense, and family based petitions. In less than three years he was promoted to partner of the NeJame firm. In 2016, Mubarak reached a new milestone by opening Mubarak Law with offices in downtown Orlando. During a time when the term, “immigration,” has become a polarizing political issue, immigration attorneys, like Mubarak, are experiencing a moment in their career that will potentially mark their most noble time to protect the rights of all under this country’s constitution and laws. With this in mind, Attorney Mubarak believes it is critical to develop real relationships with his clients. “It is important to truly understand, and know your clients , in order to represent your clients” Mubarak says. The firm’s motto: “Your Future, Our Priority,” was created based on this belief. Whether its removal defense, family petitions, or investor visas, Mubarak understands his clients have entrusted him with their future. Due to a natural progression within his diverse and loyal clientele, Mubarak’s firm handles personal injury and small business matters in addition to immigration law.

Location DoveCote

Mubarak also sits on the Board of Directors for the Arab-American Community Center in Orlando. He received the AVVO Client’s Choice Award in 2014, 2015, and 2016. Florida SuperLawyers ranked Mubarak as a Rising Star for 2016 and 2017. In addition to Orlando Attorney Mubarak, the team is comprised of Gloria Lopez of Venezuela, Grace Naranjo of Colombia, and National Guard SGT Jose Salvador, JD.

It’s easy to list his accolades; however, the reviews of the Mubarak Law team speak volumes. Over the years, he has built deep community ties by volunteering with local non-profits to provide free naturalization workshops and “Know Your Rights Seminars.”

JOHNNY A. PINEYRO,ESQ. Founder/Florida Injury Law Firm

Johnny Pineyro returned from Pennsylvania and moved to Florida where he began practicing law twenty years ago. He quickly gained valuable courtroom experience and skills, and realized his professional calling: to represent the injured. Ten years ago, he started his own personal injury law firm. Today, Johnny’s firm, Florida Injury Law Firm, has expanded to a staff of ten dedicated professionals, including three full-time lawyers with over 100 years of combined experience and over $100,000,000 in settlements and verdicts. Johnny represents clients in civil litigation cases, primarily against corporations. He vigorously represents those who are unable to fight for themselves because of the economics surrounding the prosecution of catastrophic injury cases in this country. Johnny is a member of The Florida Bar, the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida and the Middle District of Florida, as well as the District of Colorado. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Johnny is a pilot, author, tennis player, and active member of his local church and community. He serves as a board member to “Angel Flight,” a group that enriches the lives of children with disabilities through aviation. He also dedicates countless hours to “Big Brothers and Big Sisters” and the “Make-A-Wish Foundation,” fulfilling the words of one of his favorite quotes (spoken by W. Churchill): You make a living by what you get, but a life by what you give.” Johnny and

his wife, Amy, and their twin daughters, Kaiya and Camilla, live in Golden Oak, Florida. We recently had the opportunity to sit down with Johnny to discuss a range of topics, including his advice on selecting the right attorney: Q: To what do you attribute your success in law? A: I think it starts with a warrior spirit. When I take on a case, I become engaged in a very real battle for justice against the other side. I am my client’s advocate, their voice in a time of need. One of my strengths is the ability to think many steps ahead, while staying focused on the here and now. This is the result of hundreds and hundreds of cases, over many, many years. Q: You mentioned “hundreds of cases.” How much do you rely on your experience? A: A great deal. Experience is everything, especially in complex cases. When you’re choosing on attorney, ask how many years he or she has been practicing.

A: Well, it has helped in many ways. First, it has provided another way for me to give back. Secondly, aviation, like law, requires precision, skill and focus. It keeps me sharp. Q: Can you talk about your philanthropic work? A: Of course. As you know, Angel Flight is very important to me. I support a growing number of other local and national charities, both with my time and resources. I recently started the Pineyro Education Foundation, which offers scholarship programs to underserved children in Florida. Q: “Get The Justice You Deserve” was published in 2011. What was your inspiration? A: I wanted to provide the general public with a practical guide to personal injury law. Many people don’t understand the basics or they have a misunderstanding of the basics. Mass consumer advertising by attorneys is partially to blame for creating these misunderstandings. We pride ourselves on being professional and above the fray.

Q: What kinds of cases do you handle? A: Personal injury and wrongful death cases. I have also handled aviation-related cases over the years. Q: I know you’re on aviator. How has that helped what you do?

PAUL C. PERKINS, JR A Legacy of Over 100 years of Serving the People of Florida The Perkins Family has been representing the people of Florida in its courtrooms for over 100 years. Daniel Webster Perkins, Esq. was admitted to practice law in 1914, and in 1915, D.W. Perkins argued the landmark case before the Florida Supreme Court that allowed African-Americans to serve on juries in Florida. Paul C. Perkins, Sr., Esq. was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1950, and he worked at his Uncle Daniel’s side in Jacksonville, until he moved to Orlando in 1951. Perkins served as co-counsel with Thurgood Marshall and Jack Greenberg of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, representing the Groveland Four, four African-American young men who were accused of raping Norma Jean Padgett in Lake County Florida. The New York Times Best Seller Devil in the Grove by Gilbert King tells the story of this tragic tale. Paul C. Perkins, Sr. served the Central Florida Community as an advocate for civil rights and justice, as well as a business leader and philanthropist. He helped found the Washington Shores Federal Savings and Loan in 1963, the first African American owned lending institution in the state of Florida. Paul, Sr. died in 1985. Paul C. Perkins, Jr. began practicing in 1991, six years after his father’s death. Since that time, Paul has tirelessly represented people who have suffered injuries and illnesses due to the negligence of others in Florida’s courtrooms. Mr. Perkins concentrates his practice in the fields of personal injury and insurance law, including automobile accidents,

slip and fall accidents, wrongful death claims and medical malpractice. His insurance practice involves representing homeowners and business owners in claims against their insurance companies when they fail or refuse to pay the proper amount for covered claims. Recently, Mr. Perkins procured a verdict for a homeowner whose claim was denied by his insurance company when a Florida storm caused irreparable damage to his rear screen enclosure. Rather than pay his claim fairly, the insurance company chose to blame the homeowner for improper maintenance of the enclosure and denied the claim. After years of litigation, counsel for the homeowner engaged Mr. Perkins to try the case against the insurance carrier. The case required 2 trials, but ultimately, the homeowner prevailed, requiring the insurer to pay the entire loss, plus all of the homeowner’s attorneys’ fees and the cost of litigation. In another recent case, Mr. Perkins procured a $550,000 verdict for a woman who was injured in a minor automobile accident. She suffered very serious injuries because she had a condition in her neck that made her more susceptible to injury than perfectly healthy people. The law in Florida and throughout the country is clear, that a person who negligently causes a crash “takes the plaintiff as he finds them”, and is responsible for their injuries including any pre-existing susceptibility. It is called the “eggshell plaintiff doctrine”, and is taught in all law

schools. Nonetheless, the insurance company for the negligent driver refused to pay a reasonable settlement for the extensive medical care she needed, offering a mere $25,000, with a threat to charge her for their attorney’s fees if they prevailed. They did not. Mr. Perkins has many other verdicts and settlements for his clients, including a verdict of $5.9 million for a man whose foot was crushed in a fork lift accident. Mr. Perkins is rated by Super Lawyers, The National Trial Lawyers Top 100, and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. He and his wife Andrea have raised their two children here in Central Florida, where he volunteers for various civic and professional organizations. Paul’s firm is Paul & Perkins, PA at 3117 Edgewater Dr., Orlando FL 32804. Please call him at (407) 540-0122, or visit the website for more information at paulandperkins.com.

DAVID T. ROBERTS

The Roberts Family Law Firm, P.A. David T. Roberts graduated with a 4.0 in Finance from the University of Florida College of Business in 1992, and with Honors from the University of Florida Levin College of Law in 1995. He was born in Virginia, moved to Florida at a young age, and has been a resident of Orlando for more than 20 years. A family man, he is the proud father of an amazing eight-year-old boy. Mr. Roberts has worked with families since admission to The Florida Bar in early 1996. He established his firm in Orlando, and soon began to focus primarily on the practice of family law. Over the course of more than 20 years, David has both expanded within, and influenced in great part, the evolution of family law in Central Florida. From day one, Mr. Roberts has espoused a bold, aggressive approach to practicing family law that has maximized his clients’ outcomes for decades. He has been involved in more than 1,000 family law cases, including divorces, paternity actions, relocations, modifications, appeals and a myriad of other family law actions; countless patrons of his firm have sought and found refuge from the awful effects of divorce, under the aegis of his practice. The Roberts Family Law Firm, P.A., is located just outside of downtown Orlando, and has a second office in Kissimmee, Florida. It is a boutique firm, working only in the areas of divorce and family law. Despite current trends where family law firms are growing larger, and where several attorneys handle different aspects of each case, Mr. Roberts’ firm strictly adheres to one fundamental principle. Each client will be represented by the family law attorney, (whether it be David himself, or one of his associate attorneys), that the client hires,

along with the same paralegal, for the entirety of the case. In addition to that, each client benefits from the use of the firm’s significant ancillary resources. These include an appellate attorney who specializes in legal research and family law appellate practice, several excellent paralegals, a full-time receptionist, and a number of law clerks. The guiding principle of this business model is to provide case-specific, intimate and aggressive representation, for every client. The initial intent, of course, is to settle every case, and the firm does indeed negotiate a settlement for more than eighty-five percent of its clients. The goal during the settlement process, which usually culminates in mediation, is fair, or better than fair. However, in the event that a favorable outcome cannot be obtained amicably, David and his team are dedicated to a results-oriented approach to litigation. This approach relies on vigorous preparation, sound strategies, the application of resources, and the significant experience of the attorneys and staff. As of this writing, Mr. Roberts has been involved in 139 major trials of one or more days. Over the years, Mr. Roberts and his firm have received numerous accolades. In 2004 he was chosen by the local Fox News affiliate to provide expert television commentary on a breaking story involving a custody dispute in Seminole County, Florida. He is also published, having co-authored a practice manual in 2011 titled Inside the Minds: Strategies for Family Law in Florida, related to the promulgation of new laws in Florida that have reshaped the family law litigation landscape.

American Institute of Family Law Attorneys, and in 2017 he received a certificate of membership in Lawyers of Distinction, for Family Law and Divorce, and also recognition by Attorney and Practice Magazine as a “Top 10” Attorney in Family Law. All new clients experience the same passion, dedication and grinding work ethic that have become the hallmark traits of David T. Roberts and The Roberts Family Law Firm, P.A.

In 2016 and 2017 Mr. Roberts was awarded the “10 Best” Client Satisfaction Award by the

MARK L. HORWITZ Criminal Defense Attorney

As an Assistant United States Attorney representing the United States, Mark Horwitz prosecuted all types of cases including healthcare fraud, tax evasion, wire and mail fraud, fraud against the government, drugs, and the murder of the Gotha Postmaster. The opportunity to prosecute these and other crimes provided Mr. Horwitz a solid basis to vigorously defend people under investigation for or charged with serious crime in both federal and state court. In private practice, Mark has defended people in federal court in Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville as well as Palm Beach, Ft. Pierce, Miami, Pensacola, Panama City and throughout the United States. Defending complex federal crimes, including healthcare fraud, tax evasion, securities fraud and mortgage fraud has been a major part of his practice. He has also defended clients in state criminal matters including white collar crimes, theft, bribery, and state sales tax. In non-white collar cases, he has defended clients in matters involving vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident with death, murder, drugs, child pornography, sex crimes and other offenses. Mark Horwitz is certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a Criminal Trial Advocate and by The Florida Bar as a specialist in Criminal Trial Law. He has the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards by Martindale-Hubbel. In addition to the preeminent rating in Martindale-Hubbel, he is listed in The Best Lawyers in America© and Florida Super Lawyers. Mr. Horwitz is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Mr. Horwitz believes that defending a person’s liberty is the most important responsibility an attorney can undertake. In protecting a client’s freedom, Mark’s philosophy is that no stone is left unturned, all facts are thoroughly investigated, legal issues fully developed and all actions legally and ethically possible are undertaken for the defense. The lawyers and paralegals that work at the Horwitz firm help him carry out these principles. Horwitz utilizes a team concept of lawyers and Florida Bar Registered Paralegals in conjunction with modern technology when investigating, organizing evidence, and building a strong defense. Criminal investigations, especially involving white collar crimes, can take months or years. In pre-indictment investigations, the goal is to conduct a thorough defense investigation aimed at developing the facts to convince law enforcement and prosecutors that criminal charges are not warranted. By preventing criminal charges, the client is able to avoid the humiliation and emotional stress associated with indictment and arrest. In some cases, it is not possible to prevent the filing of criminal charges. In those situations, the pre-arrest defense investigation is important to a vigorous defense at trial. Criminal tax defense has always been a part of Mr. Horwitz’s practice. He has represented professionals such as doctors, dentists, architects, athletes, as well as business owners and other individuals under investigation and charged with violating criminal tax laws. He

has tried many criminal tax cases and has been able to persuade the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Justice to close investigations without prosecution. Mark Horwitz has also helped many clients with unreported offshore bank accounts enter and complete the Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program, thereby avoiding federal arrest and criminal prosecution, and reducing civil monetary penalties. It is not unusual to deal with tens of thousands of documents and hundreds of gigabytes of computer data in white collar cases. To control such massive amounts of evidence, Horwitz utilizes the paralegals and the attorneys that work in his firm as well as cutting edge technology. Although technology is important, Mark believes that “there is no substitute for experience, hard work and diligence when defending a client’s liberty.”

BRENDA L. LONDON Collaborative Family Law Attorney | Florida Supreme Court Certified Mediator The Aikin Family Law Group My desire to help families has never wavered since I graduated from the University Of Florida Levin College Of Law and started practicing in Orlando, some thirty (30) years ago. My goal is to help make our community a more vibrant and healthy place – one family at a time. For the past 23 years I have practiced exclusively in the area of family law at The Aikin Family Law Group, www.AikinLaw.com. My practice includes divorce, child custody issues, paternity cases, support, modifications and Guardian Ad Litem cases. My years of training and experience in working with children and families have given me valuable conflict resolution skills that allow me to guide families to achieve positive outcomes. To reach these outcomes, I utilize collaborative law, mediation, and strategic and responsible litigation. I am a member of The Collaborative Family Law Group of Central Florida, where I serve as a board member as well as the Administrator of

this professional non-profit organization, www.cfl-cfl.com. The collaborative law process allows families to utilize a professional team to resolve their conflict, without going to court. As a Certified Florida Supreme Court Mediator I often mediate cases for families who are not represented by lawyers. This is called “Pro Se” mediation. In “Pro Se” mediation, I meet with couples to facilitate their discussions and help them work together towards minimizing losses and maximizing outcomes both financially and emotionally. These meetings are conducted in the privacy of our office and not in the courtroom. Most importantly, this process helps avoid destructive battles that impact couples and any children involved, and is much more cost-effective. Also, I have the privilege of teaching collaborative law as an adjunct law professor at The Barry University Dewayne O. Andreas School of Law in Orlando. In my role at Barry, I am

the Director of The Collaborative Family Law Clinic, which assists families who financially qualify for free help with divorce or paternity actions. I am a collaborative law trainer and speaker, teaching professionals how to practice collaborative law. In 2016, I had the honor of being awarded the Judge J.C. “Jake” Stone Distinguished Service Award for my work as a Guardian Ad Litem. In 2017, I was extremely humbled to receive The Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Service Award for the Ninth Judicial Circuit. I am so grateful to be able to serve the community through my practice, my teaching, and my pro bono work with children and families. Whether working with couples in my conference room or in the courtroom, I am committed to helping families achieve a healthier and more positive future.

SCOTT L. RICHARDSON Criminal Defense Attorney A Q & A With Scott L. Richardson

STYLE: You were voted by 200,000 plus Orlando Style readers and recognized nationally by attorneys to be featured here. What are you feelings on that? A: Well, obviously, honored and

grateful. I would like to think I have a nice following in Central Florida; developed over the decades. I have deep roots in the area. I believe I have a long list of satisfied former clients as well – that helps a lot. Accessibility is key.

STYLE: What kind of cases do you prefer to take on? A: I do almost exclusively criminal

defense. I’ve represented citizens of Central Florida from cases ranging from traffic violations to murder charges. Most of my cases, however, fall somewhere in between. I represent numerous people charged with traffic offenses, including DUI, domestic violence, drug charges, as well as economic crimes. I will consult with anyone facing any criminal charge in any jurisdiction.

STYLE: What part of your practice do you enjoy most? A: Circumstances where my client is

innocent or grossly overcharged. It happens more than people think. You don’t have to look far for examples.

STYLE: Give us some examples, if you would. A: Well, in Central Florida alone,

there are recent cases where people were charged with possession of narcotics. It turns out, in those cases, that the ‘substance’ was donut glaze in one case, and in another case, it was drywall powder - nothing short of a nightmare for these folks. Outrageous miscalculations by law enforcement. I represented a gentleman charged with attacking someone in a nightclub. I sent my investigator the next day to obtain video from the establishment. It turned out that he had been falsely accused.

STYLE: Are there any trends in the criminal justice system you would like to point out?

A: Sure. Everything seems to be

on video now. We have dash-cams, bodycams, and security cameras seemingly everywhere. With actual footage of events at our disposal, the prosecutors and I can resolve factual issues easier than we could twenty years ago. Also, advancements in DNA and other scientific methods have illuminated important information for us. There have been numerous exonerations, based on DNA evidence. It turns out people have spent decades in prison when they were in fact innocent of the charges.

STYLE: We note you contribute to some charities in Central Florida. What are your favorites? A: I help sponsor the Me Strong 5k, in

DeLand, Florida, every January. I have also donated to high school booster clubs, and the Coastal Conservation Association. As a family, we attend any 5k races we can - benefiting charities.

STYLE: So, if you enjoy running 5k’s, what music tops your list on your I-Pod right now? A: Sublime, Foo Fighters, Incubus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

STYLE: Tell our readers what you prefer to do on your time off. A: Outdoor activities. I’ve developed

a serious fishing habit and I’ve always been an avid surfer and golfer – anything outdoors. My family loves to travel. Our destinations are typically off the grid, involving mountain adventures or tropical island destinations – all involving adrenaline sports of some kind.

STYLE: Do you have any advice for any of our readers who may come into contact with police officers? A: Yes, be very polite and respectful.

Do not talk to law enforcement about whatever charges you may be faced with. Just politely state that you want to talk to your attorney, Scott L. Richardson! 407-843-9411

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL: Why did you become an attorney? I like the competition. I was a competitive swimmer at the University of Florida for my four years there; my favorite stroke was the butterfly. I’m extremely comfortable in the courtroom. I really like it; it’s fun. What do you like best about the practice of law? I like winning and I’m good at it. Being in the courtroom fighting for my clients brings me a lot of pleasure. Not many people hire a trial attorney to “do their best;” they hire them to win. That’s what we do and we do it well. I’m tough in the courtroom, but I can leave it behind. ERIC J. TRABIN

The Trabin Law Firm

Eric J. Trabin grew up in West Palm Beach. After graduating from Suncoast Community High School in the International Baccalaureate program, he was accepted to the Honors Program at the University of Florida. At UF he received his undergraduate degree with a major in Criminology and a minor in Philosophy in 2003. He remained there to receive his JD in 2006. He currently practices Criminal Defense and Family Law in Central Florida with an office in Maitland. Mr. Trabin has long had a passion for service. While in law school, he worked in a clinic providing family law services for the underprivileged, fighting for those who could not fight for themselves. He maintains that the legal profession gives voice to those who do not want to be, or cannot be, their own voice. He feels that at its heart, each case is about real people. Mr. Trabin considers the practice of law to be a calling and genuinely enjoys his work. After law school, Mr. Trabin moved to the Orlando area. He worked as an Assistant State Attorney for the Ninth Judicial Circuit for four years, giving him invaluable experience in a variety of cases, including DUI, domestic violence, murder trials, death penalty and more. In 2011 he founded The Trabin Law Firm where he now represents clients in family and criminal defense cases. Among his awards, Mr. Trabin has been recognized by the American Institute of DUI Attorneys as one of “Florida’s Ten Best” for 2016-17. ethics and ability. In Super Lawyer’s magazine, which recognizes and rates lawyers through peer recognition and professional achievement, he has been listed as a “Rising Star” for the past two years. Mr. Trabin is rated a “Top Attorney” on Avvo.com, an online legal services marketplace, having received a perfect rating of 10 out of 10; he is considered “Superb.” Community involvement occupies a part of his life and he is a member of the Jewish Community Relations Council as a liaison to the Seminole County School Board, helping to coordinate the organizing of events that they sponsor. Mr. Trabin is married with two children, ages two and four, lives in Oviedo, and practices the martial art of Wah Lum Kung Fu, which he feels provides mental focus and reiterates the value of hard work. “Kung Fu teaches the art of hard work, discipline, and perseverance,” he says. “I draw upon its lessons in my legal practice on a regular basis.” He likens it to the profession of law in the sense that hard work is required to accomplish greatness and to never give up.

ALISON YURKO

Attorney at Law

Alison Yurko has been practicing law in Orlando now for almost 30 years and brings a wealth of experience for clients that have governmental permitting issues, land development approval needs and related issues. Having spent almost 6 years as an Assistant County Attorney for Orange County government in the early 90’s, Alison had a chance to see first hand how local government works. After that, she became a partner in a major local law firm and had an opportunity to work on many large projects for developers. She has been Board Certified in City, County and Local Government Law since 2000 and is AV rated. She has special expertise in areas such as real estate tax appeals, public utilities, code enforcement liens, impact fees, dock disputes, drainage disputes, and all zoning and related development approval issues. She also has extensive expertise in bid protest issues, having been involved in numerous large bid protest proceedings in Orange County, including the approximately $300,000,000.00 catering contract bid protest at the Orange County Convention Center, where she was on the team that successfully represented the winning bidder. She has served as the Charter Review General Co-Counsel for Orange County government, Charter Review Counsel for Seminole County Government, currently serves as the Code Enforcement Board Special Magistrate for the City of Apopka, and is a board member of the Charles Hosmer Morse Foundation, which helps oversee the

operation of the Morse Museum which houses the renowned Tiffany Art Collection in Winter Park. She has written numerous widely cited articles on the topic of municipal annexation, and has lectured throughout the state on this topic and related land use topics. Alison attended Oak Ridge High School, and then made her way to the University of Notre Dame as a Notre Dame Scholar. She was the research assistant for Professor James J. Brown and helped edit a well known land use book series while at Stetson Law School, where she was also the Articles Editor for the Stetson Law Review. Like her dad, Albert Yurko, who practiced law almost 50 years in Orlando before passing away this year, Alison hung her own shingle and opened an office about a dozen years ago. She prides herself on providing clients with a sophisticated land use practice. Her office is in the Delaney Park area, at 920 ½ Delaney Drive, minutes from downtown Orlando. She is the mother of 19 year old triplets – Claire and Matthew Callan, who are both sophomores at Notre Dame, and Paige Callan a sophomore at UCLA Film School. The triplets grew up going to her office after school, which had a basketball hoop and plenty of activities to keep them busy. None of them profess an interest in law at this point, but their mom holds out hope that at least one of them will help carry on the family tradition of solving client’s legal problems in a positive and cost effective manner.

BIGG PERSONA

108

| ORLANDOSTYLEMAGAZINE.COM

By Hannah Filiatreau

PEOPLE

In 1999 John Fredericks was known for gospel and contemporary Christian. With two number one songs on the contemporary Christian charts, he decided to step back and increase his business education. Now, known to most as Bigg Persona, he has a resume as big as his heart and passion. His most recent accomplishment, the musical short film “On the Mind of a Beautiful Woman” features 12 new songs and a cast of 200, including Central Florida local residents and pageant titleholders. Orlando Style: Tell me a little about yourself and how you got to where you are as an artist. Bigg Persona: During my first tour as a contemporary christian artist I decided to get more education on the business side of the recording industry. I interned for Def Jam in New York between 2005 and 2007. Afterwards, I moved to Orlando, started recording as an R&B artist and got the attention of A&R. Having my own knowledge of the business I formed my independent record company and began releasing music as Bigg Persona. I released “Need it So Badly” which was picked up by Top 40 radio stations and some night clubs. I also recorded a remake of “You Give Good Love” by Whitney Houston and was contacted by stations interested in airing my version. The president of RCA liked several songs on my record at the time but believed I was too late in the game and should stick to writing. It was during the brief tour for my second music video, “I Got Her Forever”, that I was requested to serenade Jackie Siegel for the 2015 Miss Florida Pageant and we began making plans for the film.

OS: The film features a cast of over 400 Central Florida residents. Why did you decide to feature state residents and sponsors? BP: It was the timing. I consider myself a practical person and a realist and the things that things were unfolding, it had the aura of needing to be done here. And it gave me the opportunity to work with people who had never been in something and wanted to, as well as to work with a lot of starving artists who had never gotten visibility. People came together from everywhere for this journey and dream and ended up forming lasting friendships. OS: Why include major pageant titleholders? Why was their appearance in the film important? BP: It was my word to Jackie Siegel. There were 200 women in the film and 50-75 were pageant titleholders. I had the opportunity to work with each and every one of them and keep the integrity of my word. OS: A lot of filming took place at the Bella Collina country club. How did that decision come about? BP: Steve Dehardy, the general manager I worked closely with to feature luxury cars, recommended shooting there. Paula Wyatt called and spoke with Rick Arughi, who said no, but was willing to meet me in person. Arughi did his research in the time I rushed over and was immediately interested. Despite it being a very private community he was open to the idea and the more we looked into it the more we fell in love with the idea.

OS: What inspired the creation of the film and how did the idea come about?

OS: Was there anything in the film or album that was especially important to you?

BP: As a record company I wanted to put out not one music video but something to promote the whole body of work. At the time music and film were being merged like never before so I decided in 2015 to get ahead of the game and create this life love story that would be intertwined with all of these songs, and would give it a unique concept. It was during my meeting with Jackie Siegel that we decided to create it featuring pageant titleholders.

BP: The last two songs in the movie. One is “Find the Courage”, meaning the courage for women dealing with domestic violence. The last finale song is “So I’ll Pray for Love”, and it’s a universal song that talks about praying for all mankind to come back to love for one another and to treat each other the way we want to be treated. Those are the songs that I believe will run to form with most fans.

OS: In your own words can you explain what the film is about? BP: It is an over the top musical production that incorporates the pursuit, loss, regaining and celebration of true love. It also deals heavily with domestic violence and inspiring the courage to leave and to live.

OS: The film features 12 new songs, each supposedly dedicated to one of the most influential female entertainment industry icons. Can you share with us who each song is dedicated to? BP: Sure, they are “Let This Man Sing” – Oprah Winfrey “You’ll Always Find Me Here” – Sade “Her Love” – Adele

“Show Off ” – Beyoncé “Letcha” – Patti LaBelle “Michael” - Janet Jackson “Chardonnay” – Aretha Franklin “Have A Drink With Me” – Anita Baker “I Got Her Forever” – Celine Dion “Find The Courage” – Mariah Carey “So I’ll Pray” – CeCe Winans And the Outro “Never Too Late For Love” – Chaka Kahn OS: What was the scariest part of your filming experience? BP: There were two instances. We were out in the deep ocean on yachts with drones flying in the air to film and sharks and everything else. I’m on the bow of this yacht, and I’m not afraid of water and I can swim, but I’m terrified of the wide open beneath me and not knowing what’s below me. I did conquer my fear and had to get out there. Then we were filming at wonderworks, with drones again, and I’m outside, stories high on a ledge with no harness. One close friend talked me into doing it. OS: Was the response to the film what you had hoped for? BP: The feedback we have gotten has been enormous and wonderful, it’s one of a kind and unique. Right after the premier at Mango’s Tropical Cafe, it was sent to South by Southwest Film Festival, the number one music festival in the world. Then it started garnering attention from producers in Hollywood who wanted see what else I was working on. OS: What can we expect to see from you in the future? BP: I’m engrossed in writing a new script and movie that we’re hoping will feature Jackie Siegel, called “A Life Lived”. It’s not a musical, it’s a sci-fi drama and were hoping to begin production sometime at the end of the year. I’m hoping to create it in Central Florida again with the same people and sponsors. OS: Is there anything you would like to add? BP: I will always remain very appreciative of all of my sponsors, partners, volunteers, extras, supporters, fans and any prayers. For everything they have done, every ounce of their contributions to helping me and helping me create my first major motion picture musical film. Without them joining my journey, this would not have been done or we would still be working on it.

MY STYLE ANNIVERSARY A look back on five magical years writing for Style Magazines! By Riesa Pascal

The story of how I began writing for Style Magazines is one that not many people know, but it’s a story that I hope will encourage you in the same way it encourages me when life isn’t exactly going as I’d planned. As you’ll come to see through my brief retelling of the events, God truly works in mysterious ways and sometimes what seems like your worst nightmare is actually just a door opening towards something greater. To share this story requires winding the clock back to the spring of 2012 when I was a senior at Florida State University. My final semester of college was coming to a bittersweet close and I had just finished ordering my graduation announcements when a new email popped up from the university. I immediately clicked the notification and then read with horror that an unknowingly missed course credit meant I was still one English course away from graduating with my double major in Creative Writing and Communication Studies. In the blink of an eye, all of my post-graduation plans came to a screeching halt and I was suddenly left with two options to receive the diploma I had worked so long and hard for: 1) Enroll in summer school and complete the missing course or 2) Substitute the missing credit with a summer editorial internship. With deadlines right around the corner, I opted for the latter and scoured the internet in search of a publication local to my hometown of Orlando that would allow me to join their summer internship program at such short notice (in spite of me having no professional writing experience). It was then, in the depth of my desperate search, that my prayers were answered in the form of an internship offer from Style Magazines. My first article as an intern was published in the Summer Double Issue exactly five years ago. It was a Don’t Miss The Beat story about Gotye, the Grammy award-winning artist who was dominating the summer Billboard charts with “Somebody That I Used To Know.” As long as I live, I’ll never forget the moment I picked up that glossy hard copy of Orlando Style Magazine, flipped to my article, and saw my name in print for the very first time. I was filled with a sense of joy, pride and immense awe that I had never felt

before. As I read and re-read over my printed words, it began to dawn on me that I was now a published writer. From that moment on, I was instantly and irrevocably hooked to this exciting new world of editorial and luxury lifestyle journalism. As I wrote more and fine-tuned my skills, it became abundantly clear to me that despite the regrettable mistake that brought me to Style Magazines, God had me exactly where I was meant to be. Fast forward to the final day of my summer internship and I heard seven words that changed the course of my life and led me down a path of magnificent adventures and opportunities that I could’ve never imagined.

to see what other exciting adventures the future holds. In celebrating how far I’ve come as a lead Style Magazines contributor, I would be remiss not to thank my wonderful mother for her immeasurable patience in listening to me read every single article out loud before submission. Whether in person or over the phone, she has always been ready to drop what she’s doing to hear my latest story and offer her unfiltered critiques. I laugh now as I think back on the grim email from that fateful day—the day I once dramatically called the worst of my life—and I can’t help but to thank God that something so disappointing led me to something so beautiful.

“Would you like to keep writing for us?” As you can imagine, my response was an eager and resounding “Yes!” and it is with great pride today that I now celebrate five years of contributing to leading luxury lifestyle publications, Orlando Style Magazine and Tampa Style Magazine. I’m honored to have been published in every issue released since my inaugural Summer Double issue and this very story you’re reading marks my 160th article. In the last five years, I’ve covered every topic you could possibly think of from health, beauty and fitness to music, fine dining and celebrity gossip. I’ve met and interviewed a variety of renowned celebrities such as Imagine Dragons, Twilight’s Ashley Greene, Dan Aykroyd, Wendy Williams, Steve Madden, and many more. I’ve traveled on 15 national and international press trips including Mexico, Aruba, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, and Curacao. I’ve even represented Style Magazines live on both local and national television and that is just the tip of the iceberg. In the name of journalism, I’ve snorkeled with whale sharks, explored Mayan Ruins, hiked through a rainforest in a torrential downpour, slept in a teepee, hit speeds of 165 mph in a race car, driven a submersible scooter on an underwater safari, canoed across a bioluminescent bay in the middle of the night, jet skied through a Mangrove forest…the list goes on and on! Needless to say, it’s been a wild ride and an incredible five years and I can’t wait
