It was there, in the heart of St. Thomas, where my companions and I experienced the incomparable benefits of “The Reef Life” travel package which starts at an astonishingly low $399 per night. With average temperatures ranging in the 80s year-round, it was practically mandatory to swim through the island’s beautiful turquoise waters and get up close and personal with exotic marine life during a snorkeling excursion to St. John. For those of us who wanted to keep the thrills going long after the sun had set, night kayaking proved to be the perfect excursion and it was located just steps away from the resort. Through clear bottom kayaks retrofitted with powerful LED nights, we explored the harbor filled with tarpon, rays, sea turtles and other marine life that swam past our kayaks. One may need a little R&R after experiencing so much adventure out, about, and around the island! Our final evening at the property was brought to a close with an oyster farewell dinner at the award-winning Havana Blue restaurant. After enjoying a perfect fusion of Latin American and Caribbean favorites, it was time to say our goodbyes to the breathtaking property that served as our exciting Caribbean refuge for several unforgettable days. SAN JUAN MARRIOTT RESORT & STELLARIS CASINO Let’s just call this a vacation!

The beachfront resort is conveniently situated five miles from Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport, which means relaxation is just steps away from the very moment you land. The resort sits proud and regal over its prestigious location on Condado Beach and offers travelers a lucrative combination of adventure, local culture, and the opportunity to create lifelong memories. Though this trip was my second visit to Puerto Rico, it marked my first time as a guest of the San Juan Marriott and I was eager to experience firsthand the reputation that precedes it. Fortunately, I didn’t have to wait long as I arrived at the resort in under 15 minutes and was quickly checked into one of their 527 sophisticated guest rooms and luxurious suites. I stepped out onto my balcony overlooking breathtaking city and beachfront views that could only be visible from the resort which is located in the heart of Condado. From the physical decor to the air around me, the feeling of luxurious Caribbean elegance was unmistakable, and immediately I knew that this vacation would be like no other.

The courage to pull myself away from those stunning views required something extra special such as welcome cocktails with my companions at what’s been dubbed one of the most exhilarating bars and dance floors in the Caribbean! By day, San Juan Marriott’s Red Coral Lounge is a great location to grab a cup of joe while taking advantage of the lobby’s free Wi-Fi. By evening, resort guests mix and mingle with local crowds that dance the night away to live music and Latin beats. After enjoying our welcome cocktails at the bustling lounge (which features decor inspired by the island’s top local artists and sculptors), we were off to Santurce, also known as Puerto Rico’s art and music district. Throughout Santurce, travelers are met with numerous options for tasty gastronomic dining including Lote 23, an outdoor food space divided into four terraces that brings together 16 culinary concepts including a rotational kiosk. My companions

and I enjoyed a local beer, the smells of Puerto Rican favorites, and colorful murals by local artists as we strolled through the festive food court and took in all the ‘El Lote’ had to offer. I could hardly contain my excitement the following morning as we set out to experience something that my other Puerto Rican vacation hadn’t made easily accessible—the cultural and historically rich city of Old San Juan. As the oldest city in Puerto Rico, San Juan was full of age-old beauty and historic tales. The 475 year-old neighborhood is a 47-square-mile area located on the western half of the island. For several hours we soaked up just a few of Puerto Rico’s many incredible attractions including everything from colorful buildings, monuments and graffiti artwork to shops and friendly roadside vendors. One of the notable highlights was the popular tourist attraction, Castillo San Cristobal, also known as Fort San Cristóbal. The site and our spirited tour guide brought us back in time as we climbed through hidden passages and explored antique weaponry used to protect the transportation of gold and silver at the historic Spanish port. After we had our fill of Puerto Rican history and culture, we headed to lunch and prepared to have our fill of homemade Puerto Rican cuisine! We dined at Cafe El Punto, one of the many exquisite restaurants of San Juan and it was there that I checked yet another item off my list of must-have experiences in Puerto Rico. That wish was simply to try mofongo, the island’s renowned fried plantains dish! Needless to say, I was far from disappointed as the taste of Puerto Rico came alive through a mix of seasonings that made each bite a delight to the palate. As I sampled my companion’s dishes and sipped a refreshing, yet ridiculously large strawberry margarita, I quickly found out that Puerto Rican culture includes incredibly generous portions in both food and beverages! returned by dinner time and I was able to enjoy another exceptionally unique dining experience with my travel companions. It was nonstop laughter and oneon-one foodie fun as we took part in a thrilling cooking class at Cocina Abierta. The passion Chef Karina Santiago and her team shared for their craft was evident as they taught us how the cooking techniques, flavors, traditions, and culture of the island can come together for an unmistakably authentic meal. The following morning, I fueled up with a hearty breakfast at the resort’s La Vista Latin Grill before embarking on a morning excursion to El Yunque National Forest. The name is attributed to an Indian spirit that translates into “Forest of Clouds,” which is also the name of the main mountain peak in the forest. The only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System, El Yunque spans 28,000 acres and welcomes 600,000 visitors a year. It was there that we experienced La Mina Trail which is one of the most popular hikes of the rainforest. The path took us through the dense evergreen forest containing 240 native tree species (26 found only at El Yunque), and masses of vines, 50 native orchids, epiphytes, giant ferns, and mosses. The hundreds of animal and plant species were a sight to behold as we trekked only the paved trail that ended at La Mina Falls, a beautiful 35 foot waterfall. Upon arrival, we stripped down to our bathing suits and joined dozens of other hikers for a refreshing swim in the natural pool as cool waters cascaded over the rocks around us. Though we could’ve easily spent the whole day at El Yunque, there were more adventures to be had back on property such as enjoying the San Juan Marriott’s two-level pool and swim-up bar before taking part in a traditional pig roast at La Vista Latin Grill. Pig roasts are a staple in Puerto Rican cuisine and culture and we relished in the authentic cookout with mouth watering trimmings and a side of gorgeous resort views. Though we drank, laughed and dined until the sun had faded into the evening sky, it was clear that our night was far from over. In fact, one might say the real fun had only just begun! San Juan Marriott offers one of the liveliest casinos on the island, and we were not about to let that experience pass us by. The 24-hour, 12,700-square-foot Stellaris Casino offers Caribbean stud poker, blackjack, roulette, craps, baccarat and more than four hundred slot machines. In addition to boasting the greatest number of penny slot machines in Puerto Rico and the highest betting limits on the island, the Stellaris Casino also provides complimentary $20 match play coupons at check-in. Simply put, my stay on property led me to experience an authentic vacation in the truest, most pure sense of the word and I’d encourage my fellow Floridians and travelers to do the same. Say so long to summer, and give a warm welcome to fall! A new season is upon us, but that doesn’t mean we can’t take a moment to look back on the many exciting happenings that packed the months of July and August. We’ve got all the highlights for you, just in case you missed it! From May 26th-August 13th, guests and visitors of Gaylord Palms got ready to Surf In & Rock Out all summer long at Gaylord Palms’ annual SummerFest! The event featured far out offerings like a double FlowRider, brand new drop and racing slides, a poolside sing-along show and much more. The whole family was hangin’ ten and cheering for encore after encore at the family friendly festival. The City of Altamonte Springs and XL 106.7 hosted yet another spectacular Independence Day celebration on July 3rd! Red, Hot, & Boom was a phenomenal show complete with synchronized fireworks, food vendors, and live performances by artists like Austin Mahone, James Arthur, and more. XL 106.7 also held live interviews with the artists which aired on the station throughout the free celebration.

The event was free to the public and brought a patriotic celebration complete with a stunning fireworks display, outdoor games, exciting giveaways, great music, delicious food, a beer garden and plenty of drink specials of course! Florida’s most spectacular bridal show returned to the Orange County Convention Center on Sunday, July 30th! Florida Wedding Expo featured over 125 vendor exhibits and thousands of dollars in giveaways including 5 honeymoon stays and other free wedding products and services. VIP ticket holders were granted early access to seating for the “STYLE Down the Aisle” fashion show and entered to win exclusive VIP prizes. Walt Disney World Resort supported the Orlando Museum of Art for August’s 1st Thursdays event! On August 3rd, the museum was transformed into Pandora

- The World of AVATAR. In addition to local artists submitting their artwork to win awards, work by Disney Imagineers and artists were also on display throughout the evening. From August 19th-20th, Florida Kids and Family Expo took over Orange County Convention Center for two days of family fun and education on all the “Back to School” resources available within our own backyard! While kids were making things, trying new things, playing, bouncing, picking up free stuff, sliding, riding, discovering, creating, watching, running, eating and more, parents had the opportunity to capture new ideas and opportunities for their family. Central Floridians are satisfying cravings for haute cuisine at an even hotter price during Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month. The festivities kicked off on August 25th and run through October 1st. Magical Dining Month is a culinary celebration sure to please diner’s palates and wallets. For a limited time, more than 100 of Central Florida’s top restaurants are featuring three-course, prix fixe dinner menus for just $35, with $1 from each meal donated to a local charity. Bronze Kingdom is an 8,000-square-foot gallerymuseum showcasing approximately 300 pieces of a more than 2,000-piece collection – the largest collection of rare African bronze sculptures in the world. Founded in 2017 by collector, philanthropist and entrepreneur Rawlvan R. Bennett, Bronze Kingdom offers visitors the opportunity to view and purchase unique African tribal art pieces with artistic and historical significance. Bennett acquired the artwork over the past 37 years directly from African leaders through cultivated relationships and respectful negotiations building schools, hospitals and bridges for West African communities. “Collecting this artwork has been a life’s passion for me,” said Bennett. “The beauty, history and cultural significance of each piece has brought great meaning in my life. Through Bronze Kingdom, we hope others will have the opportunity to experience and gain insight into this authentic art that is still largely unknown.” Bronze Kingdom showcases an expansive variety of African bronze, beaded and wood sculptures from 29 African countries including Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali, and Ghana

NINE HAUNTING HOUSES RETURN At Universal Studio’s Halloween Horror Nights Starting September 15th, Universal Studio’s premier Halloween attraction is back with a new list of scares and screams. This years festivities will run through November 4th and will include popular television shows and cult classics. THE MOST POWERFUL 911 OF ALL TIME The fastest and most powerful road-approved 911 is ready for launch: The new Porsche 911 GT2 RS celebrated its world premiere at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the UK. At the heart of this high-performance sports car is a 515 kW (700 hp) biturbo flat engine. Weighing in at 1,470 kg with a full fuel tank, the lightweight two-seater accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. The rear-wheel drive Coupé has a top speed of 340 km/h, and with its near-motorsport drive technology, the new 911 GT2 RS trumps its 3.6-litre predecessor by 59 kW (80 hp) and achieves a torque of 750 Newton metres (an increase of 50 Nm). The engine builds on that 3.8-litre in the 911 Turbo S at 427 kW (580 hp). In order to increase performance, large turbochargers push an increased volume of process air into the combustion chambers. A new additional cooling system delivers optimum cooling at peak loads and, at very high temperatures, sprays the charge-air cooler with water. This causes the gas temperature to fall in the overpressure range and ensures optimum power output, even under extreme conditions. The customised GT seven-speed double-clutch transmission (PDK) in the new GT2 RS enables power to be transferred with uninterrupted traction. is hitting the runways. Well, it has been for years. Derek Lam, Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, YSL, Versace… the list goes on. High-caliber fashion houses have been blending hemp in their textiles for years, and for good reason. Hemp is sustainable, biodegradable, affordable and eco-friendly.

But is it legal in the United States, federally? Yes. Well, sort of. It’s legal to import hemp products from other hemp-producing countries. Hemp isn’t the type of marijuana that gets you high (otherwise your hempseed juices would have a much different post-workout effect…). You see, hemp is different than its sister strains of cannabis; it’s a particular strain of cannabis which has been genetically bred to produce male plants, which contain little or no THC (the psychotropic compound in the cannabis plant). Hemp is stalky, durable and fastgrowing, and has been used for hundreds of years as a sustainable fabric. In fact, hemp crops were brought over from Britain to Colonial America in the 1600s and relied upon heavily for production of sails for ships due to its durability, resistance to decay and climate adaptability. Bob Reilly, manufacturer of Florida-based hemp clothing company Sativa Fashion Brand and co-owner of Highlife Media is a staunch advocate for use of the sustainable fiber in all things from clothing to car interiors. So what are we waiting for? Well, the “legalization of marijuana” conversation will continue to complicate things. First, because hemp is a fast-growing male plant (and males love to spread their seeds), the states that have legalized marijuana are in a position to also regulate the growth of hemp crops, with the goal to keep them away from each other. Why? Because the coveted female plant – the “narcotic marijuana” – can turn hermaphrodite, or full-blown male – if exposed to other male plants. Even a small gust of wind can carry the unwanted pollen from hemp to carefully cultivated female cannabis crops, essentially destroying the salability of the crop. So, as our legal marijuana climate continues to expand, as does our need to commit endlessly to our ailing climate, we will need to set aside our differences and find a way to co-exist. And we can certainly look good doing it.

It’s a no-brainer that we are beyond being mildly concerned about our carbon footprint. It’s urgent at this point, and this is one of the biggest arguments hempadvocates – which include major fashion houses – relies upon when advocating their pro-hemp agenda. Do not confuse pro-hemp use with pro-legalization-ofmarijuana use. Generally those who tout the benefits of hemp are pressing a more important agenda – the use of sustainable,

UNLEASHING HOPE Stem cell therapy for pets

By Hannah Filiatreau Animals contribute to our happiness and health in many ways. They can alleviate stress and have been proven to increase our oxytocin or “love hormone” levels. Some pets even assist with or warn of mental and physical health episodes. These facts considered, there should be no surprise that Americans spent $66 billion to keep their pets healthy and happy in 2016; according to the APPA. One up and coming treatment being spent more on is stem cell therapy. A form of regenerative medicine, stem cell therapy is most commonly used to treat arthritis in animals, as well as a wide range of other ailments. “Regenerative Medicine is a broad definition for innovative medical therapies that will enable the body to repair, replace, restore and regenerate damaged or diseased tissues.” In humans stem cells are used for a variety of treatments, such as skin grafts, bone marrow transplants, and to treat specific types of cancer. One pioneer of stem cell research and therapy in animals is VetStem, a biopharma located in California. VetStem has chosen to use adipose stem cells, primarily known for fat storage, as they are multipurpose and regenerative. Choosing the type of stem cell is important as some can develop into more cells than others. VetStem Regenerative Medicine uses concentrated adult stem cells from the same animal to treat their traumatic or degenerative diseases. This can include bowed tendons, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis, and osteochondral defects in horses, dogs and cats. More recently, studies have been conducted involving slipped discs in animals a “shock absorber” that sits between vertebrae of the spine. Also found in humans, the degeneration of these discs often cause pinched nerves and sometimes paralysis. Procedures are completed at a local veterinarian’s office, and when conducted go as follows: “stem cells are extracted from the bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, or fat of either your pet or another animal of the same species. A veterinarian injects the stem cells into the diseased area, such as a knee joint damaged by osteoarthritis. The cells move to the inflamed or damaged tissue, suppress the inflammation, relieve pain, and cause new

tissue to grow. This new tissue is more like the original tissue than the scar tissue that would typically grow in an untreated inflamed area.” By far the most common uses of the therapy is to treat osteoarthritis - a disease that will impact 80% of dogs and 60% of cats. If your pet suffers from osteoarthritis, a common occurrence with hip dysplasia, ask your veterinarian for more information. This treatment is not a cure all and can be expensive. On average, prices run between $2000 to $3000 but can be more depending on an animal’s needs. Stem cell therapies are arriving at many veterinarians across the country, pending business approval. Check with your local veterinarian to see what services are provided and whether your pet may be a candidate.

These are examples of why Leighton has developed a national reputation. He has been hired to handle cases in Georgia, Wisconsin, Indiana, North Carolina, Kentucky, Illinois and Texas. And while many of his cases garner media attention, most of the time Leighton’s clients are ordinary people who have suffered serious loss. Like the Orlando family of a teen who was killed in a drunken boating crash. That family hired Leighton, who obtained a $1.35 million recovery and saw the boater sent to prison for 6 years. And like the $3.5 million recovery he won for an Orlando motorcyclist who suffered a brain injury where the driver who hit him only had $10,000 in insurance. A board certified trial lawyer, Leighton is considered one of the foremost experts in negligent security litigation (people injured from a criminal assault) and child sex abuse. AUBREY DUCKER Attorney and Counselor at Law Collaborative Divorce, Estate Planning, Elder Law, Family Law and Guardianship Aubrey Harry Ducker Jr. knows many names and roles. As a child, Harry grew up in a midsize town in Tennessee and delivered the afternoon newspaper in the married housing dormitories at Tennessee Technological University. Around the age of 10, his family moved to Signal Mountain, a bedroom community outside Chattanooga, to live with his Grandmother who had begun showing signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Harry became Junior (just prior to the premier of Dallas) and his mother cared for Mamaw for eight years as she progressed through dementia and became bedridden. After joining the U.S. Navy at 17, and coming to the Orlando Naval Training Center, Fireman Ducker attended the Electrician’s Mate “A” school, followed by Naval Nuclear Power School as Petty Officer Ducker. During the Navy’s extensive training, he met his future wife Laurie Weatherford, a new attorney at the old Orlando firm; Maguire, Voorhis, Wells and Wells. They were married in 1988 when he was stationed onboard the U.S.S. George Bancroft SSBN 643. The couple moved in with Laurie’s parents after her father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and given six months to live. After caring for Parks in their home, the couple also inherited the care of her mother, Ann. For six years after her husband’s death, Ann lived with the family until complications made it necessary for her

to move into a nursing home. Ann stayed several years at the Mayflower in Winter Park, and enjoyed interaction with staff, friends and family. She said she enjoyed the Mayflower because there was always someone to talk to and, though she could not get around anymore, her true friends kept in close touch. While attending the Levin College of Law at the University of Florida, Aubrey insisted he would never practice divorce or draft wills. Ironically, those two areas now make up the bulk of his practice. Q: You mentioned “hundreds of cases.” How much do you rely on your experience? A: A great deal. Experience is everything, especially in complex cases. A: Well, it has helped in many ways. First, it has provided another way for me to give back. Secondly, aviation, like law, requires precision, skill and focus. It keeps me sharp. Q: Can you talk about your philanthropic work? A: Of course. As you know, Angel Flight is very important to me. I support a growing number of other local and national charities, both with my time and resources. I recently started the Pineyro Education Foundation, which offers scholarship programs to underserved children in Florida. Q: “Get The Justice You Deserve” was published in 2011. What was your inspiration? A: I wanted to provide the general public with a practical guide to personal injury law. Many people don’t understand the basics or they have a misunderstanding of the basics. Mass consumer advertising by attorneys is partially to blame for creating these misunderstandings. We pride ourselves on being professional and above the fray.

PAUL C. PERKINS, JR A Legacy of Over 100 years of Serving the People of Florida The Perkins Family has been representing the people of Florida in its courtrooms for over 100 years. Daniel Webster Perkins, Esq. was admitted to practice law in 1914, and in 1915, D.W. Perkins argued the landmark case before the Florida Supreme Court that allowed African-Americans to serve on juries in Florida. Paul C. Perkins, Sr., Esq. was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1950, and he worked at his Uncle Daniel’s side in Jacksonville, until he moved to Orlando in 1951. Perkins served as co-counsel with Thurgood Marshall and Jack Greenberg of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, representing the Groveland Four, four African-American young men who were accused of raping Norma Jean Padgett in Lake County Florida. The New York Times Best Seller Devil in the Grove by Gilbert King tells the story of this tragic tale. Paul C. Perkins, Sr. served the Central Florida Community as an advocate for civil rights and justice, as well as a business leader and philanthropist. He helped found the Washington Shores Federal Savings and Loan in 1963, the first African American owned lending institution in the state of Florida. Paul, Sr. died in 1985. Paul C. Perkins, Jr. began practicing in 1991, six years after his father’s death. Since that time, Paul has tirelessly represented people who have suffered injuries and illnesses due to the negligence of others in Florida’s courtrooms. Mr. Perkins concentrates his practice in the fields of personal injury and insurance law, including automobile accidents,

slip and fall accidents, wrongful death claims and medical malpractice. His insurance practice involves representing homeowners and business owners in claims against their insurance companies when they fail or refuse to pay the proper amount for covered claims. Recently, Mr. Perkins procured a verdict for a homeowner whose claim was denied by his insurance company when a Florida storm caused irreparable damage to his rear screen enclosure. Rather than pay his claim fairly, the insurance company chose to blame the homeowner for improper maintenance of the enclosure and denied the claim. After years of litigation, counsel for the homeowner engaged Mr. Perkins to try the case against the insurance carrier. The case required 2 trials, but ultimately, the homeowner prevailed, requiring the insurer to pay the entire loss, plus all of the homeowner’s attorneys’ fees and the cost of litigation. In another recent case, Mr. Perkins procured a $550,000 verdict for a woman who was injured in a minor automobile accident. She suffered very serious injuries because she had a condition in her neck that made her more susceptible to injury than perfectly healthy people. The law in Florida and throughout the country is clear, that a person who negligently causes a crash “takes the plaintiff as he finds them”, and is responsible for their injuries including any pre-existing susceptibility. It is called the “eggshell plaintiff doctrine”, and is taught in all law

schools. Nonetheless, the insurance company for the negligent driver refused to pay a reasonable settlement for the extensive medical care she needed, offering a mere $25,000, with a threat to charge her for their attorney’s fees if they prevailed. They did not. Mr. Perkins has many other verdicts and settlements for his clients, including a verdict of $5.9 million for a man whose foot was crushed in a fork lift accident. Mr. Perkins is rated by Super Lawyers, The National Trial Lawyers Top 100, and is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates. grateful. I would like to think I have a nice following in Central Florida; developed over the decades. I have deep roots in the area. I believe I have a long list of satisfied former clients as well – that helps a lot. Accessibility is key.

STYLE: What kind of cases do you prefer to take on? A: I do almost exclusively criminal

defense. I’ve represented citizens of Central Florida from cases ranging from traffic violations to murder charges. Most of my cases, however, fall somewhere in between. I represent numerous people charged with traffic offenses, including DUI, domestic violence, drug charges, as well as economic crimes. I will consult with anyone facing any criminal charge in any jurisdiction.

STYLE: What part of your practice do you enjoy most? A: Circumstances where my client is

innocent or grossly overcharged. It happens more than people think. You don’t have to look far for examples.

STYLE: Give us some examples, if you would. A: Well, in Central Florida alone,

there are recent cases where people were charged with possession of narcotics. It turns out, in those cases, that the ‘substance’ was donut glaze in one case, and in another case, it was drywall powder - nothing short of a nightmare for these folks. Outrageous miscalculations by law enforcement. I represented a gentleman charged with attacking someone in a nightclub. I sent my investigator the next day to obtain video from the establishment. It turned out that he had been falsely accused.

STYLE: Are there any trends in the criminal justice system you would like to point out?

A: Sure. Everything seems to be

on video now. We have dash-cams, bodycams, and security cameras seemingly everywhere. With actual footage of events at our disposal, the prosecutors and I can resolve factual issues easier than we could twenty years ago. Also, advancements in DNA and other scientific methods have illuminated important information for us. There have been numerous exonerations, based on DNA evidence. It turns out people have spent decades in prison when they were in fact innocent of the charges.

STYLE: We note you contribute to some charities in Central Florida. What are your favorites? A: I help sponsor the Me Strong 5k, in

DeLand, Florida, every January. I have also donated to high school booster clubs, and the Coastal Conservation Association. As a family, we attend any 5k races we can - benefiting charities.

STYLE: So, if you enjoy running 5k’s, what music tops your list on your I-Pod right now? A: Sublime, Foo Fighters, Incubus, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

STYLE: Tell our readers what you prefer to do on your time off. A: Outdoor activities. I’ve developed

a serious fishing habit and I’ve always been an avid surfer and golfer – anything outdoors. My family loves to travel. Our destinations are typically off the grid, involving mountain adventures or tropical island destinations – all involving adrenaline sports of some kind.

STYLE: Do you have any advice for any of our readers who may come into contact with police officers? A: Yes, be very polite and respectful.

CHRISTOPHER THORNE Thorne & Associates, P.A. Chris is a lifelong resident of central Florida, having been born and raised in St. Cloud, Florida and now permanently residing in Orlando, Florida. Chris graduated from Rollins College on a baseball scholarship and graduated cum laude with his B.A. in English (’98). During his time at Rollins, he broke the season doubles record in baseball and finished Top Ten all time in several offensive categories. Additionally, he was Editor-in-Chief of the school newspaper, President of the English Honor Society and President of Sigma Tau Delta. After graduating from Rollins, he attended law school at the University of Florida Levin College of Law and Leiden University located in Leiden, Holland. He began his career as an associate focusing on workers’ compensation at the law firm of Alvarez, Sambol, Winthrop & Madson, P.A., and began to work for the law firm of George, Hartz, Lundeen, Fulmer & Leroy, P.A. where he continued the defense of workers’ compensation claims. In April 2006, Chris took the skills that he learned and opened the law firm of Thorne & Storey, P.A. In doing so, he opened his law firm with his best

friend from law school and continued the representation of Employer/ Carriers throughout the State of Florida. Due to hard work and loyalty from clients, their firm achieved success very quickly and earned the respect of their peers. In 2013, Chris established the law firm of Thorne & Associates, P.A., where he continued to focus on the workers’ compensation defense throughout the State of Florida. He has tried countless cases during his 15 year career and has handled files throughout each jurisdiction in the State of Florida. He has received numerous awards and has been recognized as a Super Lawyer as well as rated AV Preeminent by Martindale Hubbell. To date, his firm has seven (7) attorneys handling workers’ compensation and recently opened another office in Atlanta, Georgia. Most importantly, Chris enjoys being a father to his two children, Leiden and Arie, where he has helped coach their soccer and baseball teams. He loves travelling, spending time with his family and knows the importance of balancing it all.

Eric J. Trabin grew up in West Palm Beach. After graduating from Suncoast Community High School in the International Baccalaureate program, he was accepted to the Honors Program at the University of Florida. At UF he received his undergraduate degree with a major in Criminology and a minor in Philosophy in 2003. He remained there to receive his JD in 2006. He currently practices Criminal Defense and Family Law in Central Florida with an office in Maitland. Mr. Trabin has long had a passion for service. While in law school, he worked in a clinic providing family law services for the underprivileged, fighting for those who could not fight for themselves. Mr. Trabin is rated a “Top Attorney” on Avvo.com, an online legal services marketplace, having received a perfect rating of 10 out of 10; he is considered “Superb.” Community involvement occupies a part of his life and he is a member of the Jewish Community Relations Council as a liaison to the Seminole County School Board, helping to coordinate the organizing of events that they sponsor. Mr. Trabin is married with two children, ages two and four, lives in Oviedo, and practices the martial art of Wah Lum Kung Fu, which he feels provides mental focus and reiterates the value of hard work. “Kung Fu teaches the art of hard work, discipline, and perseverance,” he says. “I draw upon its lessons in my legal practice on a regular basis.” He likens it to the profession of law in the sense that hard work is required to accomplish greatness and to never give up.

Alison Yurko has been practicing law in Orlando now for almost 30 years and brings a wealth of experience for clients that have governmental permitting issues, land development approval needs and related issues. Having spent almost 6 years as an Assistant County Attorney for Orange County government in the early 90’s, Alison had a chance to see first hand how local government works. After that, she became a partner in a major local law firm and had an opportunity to work on many large projects for developers. She has been Board Certified in City, County and Local Government Law since 2000 and is AV rated. She has special expertise in areas such as real estate tax appeals, public utilities, code enforcement liens, impact fees, dock disputes, drainage disputes, and all zoning and related development approval issues. She also has extensive expertise in bid protest issues, having been involved in numerous large bid protest proceedings in Orange County, including the approximately $300,000,000.00 catering contract bid protest at the Orange County Convention Center, where she was on the team that successfully represented the winning bidder. She has served as the Charter Review General Co-Counsel for Orange County government, Charter Review Counsel for Seminole County Government, currently serves as the Code Enforcement Board Special Magistrate for the City of Apopka, and is a board member of the Charles Hosmer Morse Foundation, which helps oversee the

operation of the Morse Museum which houses the renowned Tiffany Art Collection in Winter Park. She has written numerous widely cited articles on the topic of municipal annexation, and has lectured throughout the state on this topic and related land use topics. Alison attended Oak Ridge High School, and then made her way to the University of Notre Dame as a Notre Dame Scholar. She was the research assistant for Professor James J. Brown and helped edit a well known land use book series while at Stetson Law School, where she was also the Articles Editor for the Stetson Law Review. Like her dad, Albert Yurko, who practiced law almost 50 years in Orlando before passing away this year, Alison hung her own shingle and opened an office about a dozen years ago. She prides herself on providing clients with a sophisticated land use practice. Her office is in the Delaney Park area, at 920 ½ Delaney Drive, minutes from downtown Orlando. She is the mother of 19 year old triplets – Claire and Matthew Callan, who are both sophomores at Notre Dame, and Paige Callan a sophomore at UCLA Film School. The triplets grew up going to her office after school, which had a basketball hoop and plenty of activities to keep them busy. None of them profess an interest in law at this point, but their mom holds out hope that at least one of them will help carry on the family tradition of solving client’s legal problems in a positive and cost effective manner.

In 1999 John Fredericks was known for gospel and contemporary Christian. With two number one songs on the contemporary Christian charts, he decided to step back and increase his business education. Now, known to most as Bigg Persona, he has a resume as big as his heart and passion. His most recent accomplishment, the musical short film “On the Mind of a Beautiful Woman” features 12 new songs and a cast of 200, including Central Florida local residents and pageant titleholders. Orlando Style: Tell me a little about yourself and how you got to where you are as an artist. Bigg Persona: During my first tour as a contemporary christian artist I decided to get more education on the business side of the recording industry. I interned for Def Jam in New York between 2005 and 2007. Afterwards, I moved to Orlando, started recording as an R&B artist and got the attention of A&R. Having my own knowledge of the business I formed my independent record company and began releasing music as Bigg Persona. I released “Need it So Badly” which was picked up by Top 40 radio stations and some night clubs. I also recorded a remake of “You Give Good Love” by Whitney Houston and was contacted by stations interested in airing my version. The president of RCA liked several songs on my record at the time but believed I was too late in the game and should stick to writing. It was during the brief tour for my second music video, “I Got Her Forever”, that I was requested to serenade Jackie Siegel for the 2015 Miss Florida Pageant and we began making plans for the film.

OS: The film features a cast of over 400 Central Florida residents. Why did you decide to feature state residents and sponsors? BP: It was the timing. I consider myself a practical person and a realist and the things that things were unfolding, it had the aura of needing to be done here. And it gave me the opportunity to work with people who had never been in something and wanted to, as well as to work with a lot of starving artists who had never gotten visibility. People came together from everywhere for this journey and dream and ended up forming lasting friendships. OS: Why include major pageant titleholders? Why was their appearance in the film important? BP: It was my word to Jackie Siegel. There were 200 women in the film and 50-75 were pageant titleholders. I had the opportunity to work with each and every one of them and keep the integrity of my word. OS: A lot of filming took place at the Bella Collina country club. How did that decision come about? BP: Steve Dehardy, the general manager I worked closely with to feature luxury cars, recommended shooting there. Paula Wyatt called and spoke with Rick Arughi, who said no, but was willing to meet me in person. Arughi did his research in the time I rushed over and was immediately interested. Despite it being a very private community he was open to the idea and the more we looked into it the more we fell in love with the idea.

OS: What inspired the creation of the film and how did the idea come about?

OS: Was there anything in the film or album that was especially important to you?

BP: As a record company I wanted to put out not one music video but something to promote the whole body of work. At the time music and film were being merged like never before so I decided in 2015 to get ahead of the game and create this life love story that would be intertwined with all of these songs, and would give it a unique concept. It was during my meeting with Jackie Siegel that we decided to create it featuring pageant titleholders.

BP: The last two songs in the movie. One is “Find the Courage”, meaning the courage for women dealing with domestic violence. The last finale song is “So I’ll Pray for Love”, and it’s a universal song that talks about praying for all mankind to come back to love for one another and to treat each other the way we want to be treated. Those are the songs that I believe will run to form with most fans.

OS: In your own words can you explain what the film is about? BP: It is an over the top musical production that incorporates the pursuit, loss, regaining and celebration of true love. It also deals heavily with domestic violence and inspiring the courage to leave and to live.

OS: The film features 12 new songs, each supposedly dedicated to one of the most influential female entertainment industry icons. Can you share with us who each song is dedicated to? BP: Sure, they are “Let This Man Sing” – Oprah Winfrey “You’ll Always Find Me Here” – Sade “Her Love” – Adele

“Show Off ” – Beyoncé “Letcha” – Patti LaBelle “Michael” - Janet Jackson “Chardonnay” – Aretha Franklin “Have A Drink With Me” – Anita Baker “I Got Her Forever” – Celine Dion “Find The Courage” – Mariah Carey “So I’ll Pray” – CeCe Winans And the Outro “Never Too Late For Love” – Chaka Kahn OS: What was the scariest part of your filming experience? BP: There were two instances. We were out in the deep ocean on yachts with drones flying in the air to film and sharks and everything else. I’m on the bow of this yacht, and I’m not afraid of water and I can swim, but I’m terrified of the wide open beneath me and not knowing what’s below me. I did conquer my fear and had to get out there. Then we were filming at wonderworks, with drones again, and I’m outside, stories high on a ledge with no harness. One close friend talked me into doing it. OS: Was the response to the film what you had hoped for? BP: The feedback we have gotten has been enormous and wonderful, it’s one of a kind and unique. Right after the premier at Mango’s Tropical Cafe, it was sent to South by Southwest Film Festival, the number one music festival in the world. Then it started garnering attention from producers in Hollywood who wanted see what else I was working on. OS: What can we expect to see from you in the future? BP: I’m engrossed in writing a new script and movie that we’re hoping will feature Jackie Siegel, called “A Life Lived”. It’s not a musical, it’s a sci-fi drama and were hoping to begin production sometime at the end of the year. I’m hoping to create it in Central Florida again with the same people and sponsors. OS: Is there anything you would like to add? BP: I will always remain very appreciative of all of my sponsors, partners, volunteers, extras, supporters, fans and any prayers. For everything they have done, every ounce of their contributions to helping me and helping me create my first major motion picture musical film. Without them joining my journey, this would not have been done or we would still be working on it.

MY STYLE ANNIVERSARY A look back on five magical years writing for Style Magazines! By Riesa Pascal

The story of how I began writing for Style Magazines is one that not many people know, but it’s a story that I hope will encourage you in the same way it encourages me when life isn’t exactly going as I’d planned. As you’ll come to see through my brief retelling of the events, God truly works in mysterious ways and sometimes what seems like your worst nightmare is actually just a door opening towards something greater. To share this story requires winding the clock back to the spring of 2012 when I was a senior at Florida State University. My final semester of college was coming to a bittersweet close and I had just finished ordering my graduation announcements when a new email popped up from the university. I immediately clicked the notification and then read with horror that an unknowingly missed course credit meant I was still one English course away from graduating with my double major in Creative Writing and Communication Studies. In the blink of an eye, all of my post-graduation plans came to a screeching halt and I was suddenly left with two options to receive the diploma I had worked so long and hard for: 1) Enroll in summer school and complete the missing course or 2) Substitute the missing credit with a summer editorial internship. With deadlines right around the corner, I opted for the latter and scoured the internet in search of a publication local to my hometown of Orlando that would allow me to join their summer internship program at such short notice (in spite of me having no professional writing experience). It was then, in the depth of my desperate search, that my prayers were answered in the form of an internship offer from Style Magazines. My first article as an intern was published in the Summer Double Issue exactly five years ago. It was a Don’t Miss The Beat story about Gotye, the Grammy award-winning artist who was dominating the summer Billboard charts with “Somebody That I Used To Know.” As long as I live, I’ll never forget the moment I picked up that glossy hard copy of Orlando Style Magazine, flipped to my article, and saw my name in print for the very first time. I was filled with a sense of joy, pride and immense awe that I had never felt

before. As I read and re-read over my printed words, it began to dawn on me that I was now a published writer. From that moment on, I was instantly and irrevocably hooked to this exciting new world of editorial and luxury lifestyle journalism. As I wrote more and fine-tuned my skills, it became abundantly clear to me that despite the regrettable mistake that brought me to Style Magazines, God had me exactly where I was meant to be. Fast forward to the final day of my summer internship and I heard seven words that changed the course of my life and led me down a path of magnificent adventures and opportunities that I could’ve never imagined.

In celebrating how far I’ve come as a lead Style Magazines contributor, I would be remiss not to thank my wonderful mother for her immeasurable patience in listening to me read every single article out loud before submission. Whether in person or over the phone, she has always been ready to drop what she’s doing to hear my latest story and offer her unfiltered critiques. I laugh now as I think back on the grim email from that fateful day—the day I once dramatically called the worst of my life—and I can’t help but to thank God that something so disappointing led me to something so beautiful.

“Would you like to keep writing for us?” As you can imagine, my response was an eager and resounding “Yes!” and it is with great pride today that I now celebrate five years of contributing to leading luxury lifestyle publications, Orlando Style Magazine and Tampa Style Magazine. I’m honored to have been published in every issue released since my inaugural Summer Double issue and this very story you’re reading marks my 160th article. In the last five years, I’ve covered every topic you could possibly think of from health, beauty and fitness to music, fine dining and celebrity gossip. I’ve met and interviewed a variety of renowned celebrities such as Imagine Dragons, Twilight’s Ashley Greene, Dan Aykroyd, Wendy Williams, Steve Madden, and many more. I’ve traveled on 15 national and international press trips including Mexico, Aruba, St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, and Curacao. I’ve even represented Style Magazines live on both local and national television and that is just the tip of the iceberg. In the name of journalism, I’ve snorkeled with whale sharks, explored Mayan Ruins, hiked through a rainforest in a torrential downpour, slept in a teepee, hit speeds of 165 mph in a race car, driven a submersible scooter on an underwater safari, canoed across a bioluminescent bay in the middle of the night, jet skied through a Mangrove forest…the list goes on and on! Needless to say, it’s been a wild ride and an incredible five years and I can’t wait
