publisher’s note

> In an almost moronic display of partisanship gridlock our Congressional electorate in both the House of Representatives and Senate just cannot seem to “get it” and have succeeded in practically bringing our great Country to its knees, in addition to making us the laughing stock of the world. Shame on them. Despite being bent into every shape conceivable, the U.S. Citizenry continues to display the gritty resilience built and maintained over the years and refuses to yield... an ongoing testament to the toughness and resolve of “We the people”! The management and staff of Orlando Style Magazine implore our elected officials to turn a new page with the beginning chapter in bringing 2012 in with a fresh, transparent, colorful and exciting approach of true bi-partisanship fueled by the energized equity markets, in restoring consumer confidence in America. A good beginning would be for all the political hopefuls to discontinue talking a growing economy down into the ground in their efforts to discredit each other in their quest for obtaining votes in the coming elections. It’s time to take a breather and enjoy the ride. Now is the time for businesses, big and small, to believe that growth is possible and if we all stand together and do what we know how to do, prosperity will be the byproduct of our efforts. Orlando Style will continue to be at your side, working with you as before, to maximize your advertising exposure at the lowest possible cost, to help get your business back on track. Our readers and subscribers are eager to see new or classic products, spa offers with revolutionary new beauty treatments, great mainstay as well as creative new dining venues, where to play a challenging game of golf…it goes on and on. Let them know you are still around by promoting your business right here in Orlando Style Magazine or on our amazing high traffic website.

styletome.com

Also, in our never-ending endeavor to present new advertising options, we are now offering ‘direct action packages’…a unique combination of a print ad with our ipad or iphone version of the magazine, bringing consumers to your doorstep with detailed maps and directions. This feature is especially useful for restaurants, clubs and walk-in retail establishments. Give us a call to learn more about this amazing marketing tool. Let’s talk real estate…our research team is continually monitoring the local, regional and international markets and reports that comparative prices for residential condos and homes are much higher around the globe than those right here at home.We are not only speaking about properties in Paris or Tokyo, but also in remote ‘hick’ towns in the expanses of China and South America. Why look elsewhere when the Orlando housing market is priced insanely low? Get in on the opportunity to ride our local real estate market upward because we all know that prices are on the rise again, hallelujah! We hope you enjoy this February issue with its collection of fun facts and great editorials and be sure to get in on the event of the year… “NBA All Star” weekend…there will be a PARTY! Watch for our “NEWSTOME” enews for details and for those that have not signed up for this free service, please do so in our website and get on the ‘LIST.’ Have a great Valentine’s Day! < Sincerely,

By: Jessica Sanchez Read more at: StyleToMe.com Chris Kirkpatrick Golf Tournament at the Hard Rock Hotel - Photo by Brion Price

> If you’ve ever had the pleasure of attending a golf tournament you know the most exciting part usually happens toward the end when you’re finally able to sit in the country club and order a drink. Let’s face it, golf is hardly the epitome of a wacky, highenergy, no-holds-barred sport. You won’t see Vegas-style girls pouring drinks, or stiltwalkers in colorful sequined gowns walking around the putting green, or grown men donning a huge Elmo head in a ridiculously fun attempt to spice up their drive. Their golf drive, that is.You won’t see any of these things at a golf tournament... unless, of course, Chris Kirkpatrick is hosting it. In the fundraising world he’s known as more than just “that guy from N’Sync,” he’s also known for throwing crazy weekend parties several times a year that raise tens of thousands of dollars for The Chris Kirkpatrick Foundation - an organization that helps disadvantaged children achieve their dreams. He kicked off the Chris Kirkpatrick Foundation Golf Tournament on December 2nd at the Hard Rock Hotel where he and business partner/friend Khamelian put on a special performance for the guests. The rest of the night was an alcohol-fueled kaleidoscope of good food, good music and good times. Photographers made sure to take plenty of pictures so people would remember it the next morning. In an impressive show of stamina and sportsmanship, many people toughed out their hangovers to continue the party the next morning at the Grand Cypress Golf Club. This wasn’t just a golf tournament; it was a soul-searching evaluation of character and maturity. At each hole players were put to the test with things like hula-hoops, Twister, and air gun snipers. But those weren’t the only distractions; women paraded around in shirts so tight that at first glance they looked painted on (on

styletome.com

second glance you realized they were!). All in all Chris Kirkpatrick proved that - despite how it’s portrayed on TV - golf can in fact be fun and interesting. He raised more than $35,000 that weekend! The end of 2011 brought with it a Central Florida tradition that‘s been going on for 32 years now: the Fresh From Florida Parade, formally known as The Citrus Parade. Every year hundreds of volunteers spend a week attaching more than 100,000 pieces of freshly donated produce to create vibrantly themed floats. The citrus smell is so sweet and pungent it almost gives you a sugar rush. It permeated the air throughout downtown Orlando on December 31st as floats and performers danced their way down the streets making you appreciate the fact that it’s not called The Seafood Parade. It is one of the highlights during Orlando Bowl Week and it is broadcast to an audience of more than two million people around the country. Afterwards all the fruits and veggies are donated to local food shelters. There is definitely no shortage of places to be on New Year’s Eve in Orlando, but the Marriott Resort Orlando World Center is quickly earning a reputation for throwing one of the wildest foot-stomping parties in town. Well, as much foot-stomping as you can do in an evening gown. At the 2nd Annual Sunglass Soiree guests were treated to the luxury of a world-class event with a parents-are-out-of town vibe. The menu featured an exquisite selection of culinary delights, skilled mixologists prepared the drinks, and Mardi Gras-style performers entertained partiers as the band played all the best hits from the past 50 years. When the clock struck midnight the New Year had just begun and, frankly, so had the party. Guests drank, danced and socialized with the kind of reckless abandon that

comes from knowing no one has to be the designated driver that night because, hey, they could just get a hotel room! The best part is that, no matter how big their headache was the next morning, they could take comfort in knowing all proceeds went to the Greater Orlando Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Another Orlando tradition is one that provides a peculiarly popular combination of pleasure and pain:The Walt Disney World Marathon. More than 56,000 runners - many of whom spent the entire year alternately running and nursing injuries from all that running - descended on the theme park on January 8th to sprint through the attractions like a tourist who only bought a one-day pass. If you’ve ever had a lapse in sanity and thought about running a marathon this is the one to enter, it is described as “the most magical 26.2 miles on Earth.” Disney characters greeted runners throughout the course to wave encouragement and provide a momentary distraction from the realization that 26 miles is, well, no walk in the park. But some of the most inspirational stories come out of this run, like that of 22-year-old Lance Corporal Matias Ferreira who, just a year before, lost both legs in Afghanistan. He ran 13.1 miles. The winner of the marathon was Brazilian Fredison Costa, who finished in 2 hours, 19 minutes, 1 second. A little more than the average wait time for any ride. I kid, I kid. < Get on the LIST!

Hôtel Le Toiny, Saint-Barthélemy - French West Indies

By: Cathleen K. Bode Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Privacy and exclusivity have remained the defining characteristics of Hôtel Le Toiny since its 1992 opening on St. Barts’ hushed and underdeveloped southeastern coast. The property’s recently renovated 15 pastel bungalows, called Villa Suites, are set on a gentle slope overlooking an island lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. Surrounded by lush vegetation, each accommodation is accessed via its own-gated entrance, with a red mailbox flag serving as a “Do Not Disturb” sign. It is this emphasis on seclusion that makes Le Toiny the ultimate destination for romance, attracting the rich and famous seeking the utmost privacy on the Caribbean’s most high profile retreat. As the most secluded retreat in St. Barts, Le Toiny offers several romantic experiences designed with couples in mind. Each Villa Suite acts as a private cottage, fully equipped with every item one could require (plus a few extras) for days and nights in complete seclusion. However, a host of unforgettable experiences also await beyond the hotel’s pastel-hued suites. The French first settled St. Barts in the 1600s, and their mark remains on the island. But the eight-square-mile oasis maintains its

styletome.com

sense of place through Creole influences, bright colors and breezy architecture. This distinctive style is apparent at Hôtel Le Toiny, from its plantation-style villas, to its famed Le Gaïac restaurant, which earned the hotel the Caribbean’s first Relais & Chateaux Grand Chef distinction. Complete with a roofed open-air terrace overlooking the ocean and an infinity pool, Le Gaïac is easily the best dining venue on the island. French-born Executive Chef Stéphane Mazières creates delectable and inspired dishes, including Smoked Marinated Gamberronies, Maki-Style Angus beef and the freshest grilled Caribbean lobster, plucked directly from Le Gaïac’s own aquarium. On Tuesdays, a variety of freshly caught local fish are served to diners’ exact specifications. Unusual surprises abound, such as delectable pasta dishes created in a 35-kg cheese wheel and, of course, Crêpes Suzette, flambéed tableside. Freshly baked bread infuses each morning on the Island with a bit of French baking finesse. Just beyond the restaurant are Hôtel Le Toiny’s 15 private Villa Suites, reminiscent of small plantation houses. Each suite features its own private terrace and heated pools,

allowing guests to remain within the cocoon of their villa, if so desired. Each pastelhued Villa Suite exudes a distinct French Caribbean flair, with vibrant striped toile du soleil, elegant dark hardwood floors, taupe walls and teak and mahogany furnishings. Bedrooms are outfitted with a perfectly replicated French Colonial four–poster mahogany bed, crafted in Martinque and draped in gauzy white with crisp textiles and Egyptian cotton sheets. An Italian tiled bathroom, with open air shower, separate bathtub and dual sinks, is bathed in natural light filtered through large windows. Each suite’s in-room kitchenette is equipped with a microwave, Nespresso machine, ice machine, mini bar, dishwasher and fully stocked utensils, well equipped for quiet nights in. While there are no movie theatres on St. Barts, Le Toiny offers a well-stocked DVD library with more than one hundred titles. In-room features include satellite flat screen televisions, DVD and CD players, iPod docking stations, music library and Wi-Fi. Given Hôtel Le Toiny’s secluded nature, the hotel continues to draw couples from across

the globe looking to recharge, restore and re-spark. In addition to its breathtaking setting, the hotel offers exclusive activities virtually guaranteed to ignite romance to last a lifetime, ideal for anniversaries, honeymoons and romantic holidays, or even quick escapes.

inspired by the Caribbean. Coconut and papaya body polishes, fresh fruit facials, relaxing leg slimming treatments and coconut oil and avocado massages are just a handful of services offered, all available both at the Spa Cottage and within the privacy of one’s own Villa Suite.

year-round. The hotel stocks a wide range of surfboards in varying sizes, as well as SUP boards. Beginners can arrange for surfing lessons, available at any time by the hotel’s experienced staff. Windsurfing, kite surfing and big game fishing are also on the hotel’s long roster of available offsite activities.

Embark on a private sunset yacht tour complete with Champagne from St. Barts’ famed Gustavia Harbor, a favorite haunt for seafaring power players and celebrities during the holiday season. Sailboat tours are also offered during the day for a view of neighboring islands.

Gourmand guests can partake in intimate gourmet picnics for two with wine and delectable cuisine, or enjoy an uber romantic three-course candlelit dinner at Restaurant Le Gaïac’s open air terrace overlooking an infinity pool and the Caribbean Sea. The hotel can also supply convertible Mini Coopers by request, allowing couples to sneak away and explore St. Barts’ numerous restaurants, shops and natural sights on their own terms.

Snorkeling and other underwater adventures are a popular choice at Le Toiny, so much that each Villa Suite comes equipped with masks, fins and snorkels at guests’ disposal. A quick trek to Le Toiny Bay and nearby beaches offers unparalleled views of coral, brightly colored tropical fish and meandering sea tortoises, just inches below the turquoise waters.

Back on land, Hôtel Le Toiny’s attentive staff can arrange for relaxing couples’ massages (try the St. Barth Sundowner to retain a bronze glow longer, or the St. Barth Chill Out treatment, featuring clamshells filled with a naturally-warming mixture for a decidedly “island” take on the traditional hot stone massage) or a range of personally tailored pursuits. The hotel’s recently added Serenity Spa Cottage readily pampers with luxurious treatments featuring exquisite products by Ligne de St. Barth, a local product line

For naturalists, outdoor pursuits abound. A nature path running from the hotel to the beach provides panoramic views of Le Toiny Bay. For a lengthier trek, an additional hotel path follows the ocean’s edge for a 40-minute hike around breathtaking Pointe du Toiny. St. Barts’ most coveted surf spot, Le Toiny Bay, faces southward offering ideal waves

A perfect stretch of paradise awaits the romantic, the daring, and the spirited… “Love Life & Laugh Often” < Hôtel Le Toiny www.letoiny.com 1-800-680-0832 or reservations@letoiny.com

Orlando Now

keep the money flowing, the city will keep the drinks flowing by allowing bars to stay open and serve alcohol until 3am, instead of the usual 2am cut-off. The All-Star Game is an NBA tradition that began in 1951. It pits the most talented and passionate players in the Western Conference against those in the Eastern Conference. The fans vote for their favorite ballers and the result is an almost surreal game that showcases an unfathomable talent for alley oops and slam-dunks. It’s all seasoned with an overwhelming display of self-confidence, but hey, that’s what makes it fun.

Let the Game Begin! NBA All-Star Weekend will bring the biggest ballers, the highest rollers and the most die-hard fans to downtown Orlando

> It will be the weekend that almost wasn’t. Last year when NBA players and owners started their own pick-and-roll game over contracts and money, Orlando was among the cities that had the most to lose. This would be the first time in 20 years the city would host an NBA All-Star Weekend giving us a chance to not only showcase the City Beautiful but also our new $480 million state-of-the-art Amway Center. It’s the main reason Orlando was awarded the 2012 game to begin with. So you can imagine why city leaders felt uneasy during the 161-day lockout, it was like watching a game where you had $100 million (in economic revenue) on the line. But that’s all behind us now, and while the lockout shortened the season and affected many jobs, businesses and livelihoods, it did not affect the 61st annual NBA All-Star Weekend. Come February 24th Orlando will transform into the basketball capital of the world! This means the bright lights of the Amway Center will glint off the dark-tinted windows of players’ Bentleys and Maybachs, shine from the bleached smiles of athletes and celebrities, and reflect in the sunglasses of their private security guards. As many as 100,000 people could descend on the downtown area that weekend making it a flurry of see-and-be-seen activity. And to

For the average fan, finding a ticket to the big game will be harder than finding a Lebron James jersey in Cleveland. The NBA controls the tickets and pricing, catering mostly to its corporate and television sponsors. The players’ families and friends are also taken care of along with various other VIPs. Magic season-ticket holders had to complete a random drawing application for the chance to buy tickets where even the highest nosebleed-inducing seat started at $500. But although the All-Star Game itself is what brings tourists and celebrities to town, it’s the off-shoot of exclusive parties and private events that really set the vibe. It is reported that rapper and producer Sean (Diddy) Combs will be hosting a party at the old Cheyenne Saloon on Church Street on Saturday, the 25th. That same night Miami Heat star Lebron James, boxer Floyd Mayweather and comedian Kevin Hart are inviting VIP partiers to the Ball Room on Church Street. At just about every restaurant, club and hotel downtown there will likely be a few celebrity sightings, making tables harder to reserve and VIP sections even harder to get into. All together this whirlwind weekend is expected to breathe life into the local economy with an estimated $100 million dollar economic impact. The last time Orlando hosted an All-Star Game was back in 1992. That game is still regarded as one of the most memorable, emotional games in NBA history. Magic Johnson had just come out of retirement after making the shocking revelation that he is HIV positive. He was named the game’s MPV. (See the Schedule of Events on P.98)<

Orlando Now

2011 Was a Great Year for Orlando Travel & Tourism By: Gary C. Sain President and CEO, Visit Orlando Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> For the Travel & Tourism Industry, 2011 showed positive signs that the economy is starting the slow process of recovery; that’s a good thing for Florida and Orlando. When the final visitation numbers are tallied, we expect another record-breaking year for Orlando in 2012 with more than 53.5 million visitors. As the region’s number one employer, having a healthy and vibrant hospitality industry provides much needed jobs for our residents, tax dollars for our state and local government and pride in knowing that Orlando is known worldwide as a place many people strive to visit. Many of our attractions, restaurants, hotels and resorts made significant investments in our Travel & Tourism infrastructure over the

last couple of years; investments that are paying off now with construction jobs and in the future with additional employment opportunities for local residents. And in 2012, we’ll see high profile events that will elevate the destination globally. February 23-26 Orlando hosts the 2012 NBA All-Star Game. For four days Orlando will become the epicenter of professional basketball throughout the world. In addition, the NBA brings exposure to Orlando from their corporate partners as well as through broadcasts of the games and events to more than 200 countries in 40 different languages. Star Wars Celebration is returning to Orlando in August 2012 for its sixth gathering. 35,000 Star Wars fans attended the last event in 2010 at the Orange County Convention Center. Orlando is the first city to host the event back to back. We hope that they choose Orlando as a permanent home for the event. Finally, our destination will host a new international show this year. National Plastics Expo, organized by the Society of Plastics

International (SPI) will bring more than 50,000 international attendees to the Orange County Convention Center in April. You may recall hearing that Visit Orlando secured this event after SPI had held it exclusively in Chicago for more than 35 years. While you may think this is just another convention, it really is a game changer for Orlando. Just as the International Home Builders Show put Orlando on the map for large conventions, The National Plastics Expo’s success will garner international acclaim in the meetings and conventions industry and bring Orlando additional recognition. These events showcase Orlando to the world and are great opportunities for our residents and our businesses. Visit Orlando continues to strengthen relationships with visitors through advertising, direct sales and marketing campaigns targeted towards potential leisure visitors, meeting professionals and convention attendees. Our mission is to brand, market and sell the area globally as the premier leisure, convention and business destination for the continual economic benefit of the community.<

Cupid playing By: Jessica Sanchez Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Depending on who you are the idea of Cupid brings to mind different images. The honeymooners imagine a cute, diaper-wearing cherubic boy that gracefully flits around aiming arrows at star-crossed lovers. The recently divorced couple may see only a bratty five-year-old boy shooting spit-wads through a straw. But for someone who has been in a perpetual state of singledom for as long as their friends can remember (which really isn’t that long at all when you consider how much alcohol they drink), the idea of Cupid brings about the eye-rolling image of that well-intentioned friend who’s on a mission to rid the world of Singlitis one blind date at a time. It’s usually a woman who’s been married so long that she wants to relive that first-kiss feeling by living vicariously through her single friends. So, as she always brags, she “loves to play Cupid!” All of her conversations begin with, “I have someone who’s perfect for you!” which is

like nails on a chalkboard to a single person. It signals the beginning of a conversation that Single has had many, many times with Cupid. It starts off with a polite “No, thank you” from Single - who is hoping that one day Cupid will take up a hobby that doesn’t revolve around Single’s relationship status and quickly leads into a sales pitch by Cupid who begins to describe Perfect-For-You the way a real estate agent would describe a home. “He’s well-maintained, charming, somewhat upscale urban - not to mention he lives in a prestigious location - and has a great view from the rear. He’s a must see!” More often than not the Must-See is more of a fixer-upper and the only thing Single gets out of the blind date is the realization that Cupid is a complete Jackass who doesn’t know Single at all.

Contrary to what people in relationships think, it is actually possible to be both single AND happy. I know this because long before I settled down into a happy relationship of my own I was happily single. Even on those Friday night’s when I’d stay in my studio apartment and sit on the bed that doubled as a couch while watching Dateline on a tube TV that also doubled as a full-length mirror, I was happy. Blissful, in fact. But trying to explain that to my relationship-laden girlfriends was like trying to explain why one million people watch Jersey Shore every week, “It’s pathetic! How can that even be possible???” It can be, and it is. Which is why now that I, too, am one of those people who not only watches Jersey Shore (don’t judge me) but also can’t possibly imagine life without my better half, I have been very conscious of leaving the role of Cupid where it belongs: in

Roman mythology where it is nothing more than a great bed-time story that always has a happy ending but doesn’t necessarily end well in real life. So on behalf of all my sane, single friends, I’m making a plea to everyone in a relationship to follow suit. Obviously this doesn’t apply to those masochistic daters who look forward to the painful attempts at lackluster conversation over coffee with a blind date (“So what made you decide to get into real estate at 35?”) So this Valentine’s Day, instead of searching for the perfect mate for your single friend, just get them the perfect gift. The Hug-Me Pillow. It’s a pillow shaped like a human arm with half a torso, a little reminiscent of those old Faces Of Death films, if you ask me. At least It lets your single friend know you “just want to see her happy.” <

The Hottest Couples of 2012 By: Rebecca Coe • Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> 1. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge: Royals Prince William and Kate Middleton With their royal title as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton have landed in the top spot as the hottest couple of 2012. On Friday, April 29, 2011, time seemed to stand still as the whole world stopped what they were doing and turned on their TVs to tune in to watch the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine, also known as ‘Kate’ Middleton. The wedding was held at Westminster Abbey in London, England and the day was dubbed a bank holiday in England. Since tying the knot, the royal couple has continued to capture the hearts of people around the world with their charm, kindness, good looks, and down-to-earth lifestyle. This month, February 2012, Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton will be spending their first Valentine’s Day together as a married couple. One can only imagine what they will do to celebrate, but one thing’s for sure, Duchess Kate will be spending Valentine’s Day without her handsome hubby, Prince William, as he is in the Falkland Islands serving out a six week call of duty tour as a search and rescue pilot with the Royal Air Force. The Royal couple lives on the island of Anglesey in a $1,200 per month farmhouse at the Royal Air Force Valley, where they enjoy a quiet and low-key life out of the public spotlight. 2. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes: “TomKat”

Coming in the number two spot, as one of the hottest couples of 2012 is actor Tom Cruise and his wife, actress Katie Holmes. The duo, nicknamed “TomKat,” began dating in April 2005 and a year later, got married in November 2006. The Hollywood A-List couple had only been dating for one month, when Tom Cruise made a public declaration of his love for Katie Holmes on The Oprah Winfrey Show, where he notoriously jumped up and down on a couch. One month later, the couple was engaged and soon after, announced that they were expecting a child. In April 2006, their daughter Suri Cruise was born and in November of that year, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were married. This year, all eyes will be on them as rumors speculate that Katie Holmes will get pregnant again or the couple may adopt a child. Also, Tom Cruise will be stretching his acting repertoire in the highly anticipated rock’n’roll musical, Rock of Ages, which will be released in theaters this summer.

Kourtney and Scott have had their fair share of ups-and-downs in their relationship, but since their 2-year-old son Mason was born in 2009, things have made a turn for the positive. They worked on smoothing out the bumps in their relationship over the past few years through couple’s counseling and by setting up boundaries and expectations in their relationship. In November 2011, the long-time loves announced to the public that they will be expecting another addition to their family and that the baby will be due later on this year in 2012. > With the completely redeveloped SL, Mercedes-Benz continues a tradition that began 60 years ago. The letters “SL” have ever since been synonymous with a symbiosis of sportiness, style and comfort – and with groundbreaking innovations. The new SL has been produced for the first time almost entirely from aluminium and weighs up to 140 kilograms less than its predecessor. Its highly rigid all-aluminium bodyshell provides the basis for agile, sporty handling that has been taken to an entirely new level, coupled with exemplary roll characteristics and ride comfort. Even better driving dynamics come courtesy of the new BlueDIRECT engines; they are more powerful yet at the same time up to 29 percent more economical than the engines in the outgoing generation. Other new features include the unique Frontbass system, which turns the luxury sports car into a concert hall regardless of whether the top is open or closed, and the highly efficient adaptive windscreen wipe/ wash system MAGIC VISION CONTROL; it supplies water from the wiper blade as required and depending on the direction of wipe. Compared with its successful predecessor, the new Mercedes-Benz SL offers considerably more comfort and sportiness, setting new standards in the luxury roadster class. Added to which is uncompromising day-today suitability, which turns the SL into an incomparable all-rounder among sports cars. In short, anyone that talks about the new SL is bound to be talking about the ultimate in passionate, refined motoring. Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars: “There are around 900 million cars in the world and thousands of models. But there are only a handful of automotive icons. Our SL is one of them: it has class, it has style, it is the ultimate in comfort and luxury. But it combines all that with incredible sportiness and dynamism. You would struggle to find a car that embodies Gottlieb Daimler’s aspiration more perfectly than our new SL: the best or nothing.” Lighter and more rigid: sophisticated all-aluminium bodyshell

The new-generation Mercedes-Benz SL takes the meaning of the famous letters “SL” – sporty, lightweight – literally. Consistent weight reduction is one of the most out-

::

standing design characteristics in the new SL as was the case in its namesake, the original SL of 1952 with its lightweight tubular frame. For the first time Mercedes-Benz has implemented an all-aluminium bodyshell in a series-production model. Only very few components consist of other materials. The designers use the even lighter magnesium for the cover behind the tank. High-strength steel tubing is integrated in the A-pillars for safety reasons. Driving pleasure: frugal, powerful engines and agile suspension

Powerful while accelerating, effortlessly superior across all speeds, nimble on winding roads – the new SL provides ample driving pleasure. Apart from the powerful engines, the sportily tuned yet comfortable suspension, which also boasts intelligent lightweight construction, proves outstanding. For instance, the steering knuckles and spring links on the front axle are also made out of aluminium to reduce the unsprung masses. The same also applies to virtually all the wheel location components on the rear axle. Design: classic SL proportions

The designers have brought the latest generation of the SL unmistakably to life on the basis of tradition but added new perspectives and visions. The result is a stylishly sporty and elegant luxury sports car with the classic hallmark SL balanced proportions: the long bonnet gives way to a compact passenger compartment that is set well back. A wide, powerful rear end giving the impression of raciness provides the finishing touch. A handful of elaborately styled lines define the powerfully sculpted and yet calm surfaces of the flanks. Finely worked details, a striking rear end as well as ventilation grilles with chromed fins from the dynamic traditional Mercedes-Benz design heritage visually emphasise the SL legend. An upright classic sports car radiator grille clearly marks out the new SL visually as a prestigious member of the current Mercedes-Benz sports car family. The centrally positioned star is a contemporary reinterpretation of the famous trademark, which now extends into the centre section with its organically flowing contours. Dynamically slanting headlamps set well to the outside flank the striking front end and

give the new roadster its own unmistakable face. The headlamps come as standard with the Intelligent Light System (ILS). With five different lighting functions that are tailored to typical driving and weather conditions, and are activated depending on the driving situation, they offer the driver a much better illuminated field of vision. The striking sidelights and the horizontal strip of the daytime running lamps in the far ends of the bumper feature LED technology. To coincide with the launch of the new SL, Mercedes-Benz will also be offering a special-edition model, the “Edition 1”, for a limited period. The “Edition 1” is superbly equipped and comes as standard with a panoramic vario-roof, AMG bodystyling, sports suspension, AMG 19-inch light-alloy wheels, designo nappa leather with contrasting topstitching, AIRSCARF, heated seats, electric draught-stop, ambient lighting and Harman/ Kardon® Logic7® surround sound system and much more. The designo crystal silver magno special paintwork is available exclusively for the “Edition 1”, along with trim in wave or deep white aluminium. <

> Every so often an artist truly enchanting, captivating and divinely talented hits the scene with such gusto every musical genre stops and takes notice. Taking chances comes with the entertainment world and one artist has proven she is going for the gold. Well in this case Nicki Minaj, born Onika Tanya Maraj, went for the platinum. Her debut album Pink Friday, released in November of her breakthrough year, sold a record-breaking amount of over 1.6 million copies. This is no surprise seeing as Nicki holds the skill to sing, rap as well as act. Minaj also possesses the ability to keep fashion critics wondering which outfit she’ll grace the red carpet in next. Who else could pull off sitting next to Anna Wintour at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in NYC wearing a candy themed ensemble? Google image search commence! With the highly anticipated release of Nicki’s sophomore album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, hitting ears everywhere on Valentine’s Day 2012, the excitement is rampant to hear exactly what one of Nicki’s alter egos has to say. That’s right, an alter ego.To better understand let’s take a look further into the artist also known as Harajuku Barbie.

In the Nick of Time Nicki Minaj Releases album on Valentine’s Day By: Megan Hyde Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Combining her eye-catching looks with her ability to rap better than many males or females, Nicki has set a new bar for upcoming artists. She is witty to the media, loyal to her fans, and super imaginative. All of which set her apart from both male and female artists today. One aspect of this performer’s stand out ability is the multiple characters she plays. It is not uncommon to listen to Minaj’s songs and as easy as she raps or sings with her high pitched and energetic Nicki voice, she will transition right into her tempestuous alter ego, now known famously, as Roman Zolanski. It’s also expected to hear animal growls, a go-between of British and Jamaican accents, breathy vocals and then before you know it Nicki is back with outrageous rap skill sets. All of these capabilities have dubbed her as the greatest female rapper in seven years. The boundaries Nicki has stretched for the hip-hop world is tremendous and her peers admire her greatly for it. So much in fact, Minaj is one of the biggest names to collaborate with. Everyone from Usher and Ludacris to Rihanna, Sean Kingston and Mariah Carey, just naming a few, has worked with this talented lady. Great talent seeks great talent and at this present time that greatness is Nicki Minaj. Born in St. James, Trinidad and Tobago and raised in Queens, New York from the age of five, Nicki grew up in a house full of less than happy circumstances. Struggle was an understatement but perseverance overpowered it. Once old enough to

work she tried her hand at several jobs and found herself always in trouble because of her inability to be mistreated. She would stand her ground and unfortunately this often led to her searching for more work. One day Nicki told her mother she would not be going back to her office job that was causing physical pain. Mix tapes were made and distributed and as fate and hard work would have it, well-established rapper Lil Wayne soon discovered Nicki. Wayne secured this gem he found and soon signed her as the first lady to the record company,Young Money.Through her work with the label, Onika Maraj has skyrocketed into complete and utter stardom. She is known as the Queen Bee of its decade.

Combining her eye-catching looks with her ability to rap better than many males or females, Nicki has set a new bar for upcoming artists.

Her fans know Nicki as an artist completely relatable and also highly approachable. In fact, she is one of the most welcoming, often getting on her twitter account, which she manages herself, to let fans know a place she will be, and invites them to join her. Fans are extremely important to this artist and she isn’t afraid to show her appreciation. With over eight million followers, Nicki values the places she has been and will go with the love of her devoted supporters whom she refers to as her Barbies. All of the previously mentioned tidbits about one of this generation’s most notable entertainers should be proof enough for one award Nicki was recently awarded. Billboard named Minaj as its Rising Star of 2011 and in December she accepted such a distinguished honor with pride and gratitude. This award hangs just as high as Nicki’s triumph at the recent American Music Awards where she went up against friends and colleagues Jay-Z, Kanye West, and of course the man who gave her a platform, Lil Wayne. She took home the wins for favorite album and favorite artist in rap/hip-hop categories. What an amazing way to end one year and heighten the promise for the upcoming one. Nicki Minaj is a scene-stealer for sure and possibly the only person to give her a run for her money would be her very own alter ego. Make sure you don’t miss whatever it is Nicki or Roman have to say this Valentine’s Day! <

Health & Beauty

Sleeping Beauty By: Cathleen K. Bode Credits: Kristina Gavilanes Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Depriving our bodies from the hours of rest it needs should be a crime.

nutrition, and most importantly rest that our body needs to repair.

According to the American Psychological Association, the amount of sleep needed depends on the individual; however, an average of at least eight hours of sleep is recommended for adults.

The effects that lack of sleep can do to you are major.

Celebrities like the beautiful Penelope Cruz gets up to fourteen hours of sleep, and actresses Catherine Zeta Jones and Renée Zellweger expresses that long hours of sleep is what keeps them looking great. Not all Hollywood starlets look to surgery or the ‘new fad’ that’s in. Good old fashion sleep will do the trick. Geoff Wright, director of the Hair and Beauty Partnership in London, is an expertise in analyzing scalp and skins problems. Wright has researched the study of the body clock, and explains thoroughly that our body clock dictates the different processes that take place in our hair and skin. Our body clock has an 8 p.m to 5 a.m sleep regimen. Though many of us are rarely in bed by 8 p.m, maybe this will help us to reconsider. During this crucial time of sleep our body receives hydration, stimulation,

styletome.com

Dermatologist, Dr. Nick Lowe explains that sleep deprivation could prematurely age the skin and can be detrimental to the way you feel and look. The consequent of no sleep triggers a high level of the stress hormone called cortisol to be released, which restrains the formation of collagen from hydrating the skin. The more you stress, the capillaries in our body tighten up, affecting the flow of nutrients to the skin and scalp. The decrease in nutrients causes the skin and hair to look dull. Cellular renewal of our skin regenerates the fastest at night. This is why night creams are sold to “work wonders.” The best night creams are the soft water-in-oil based creams that absorbs into the skin without clogging. Stay away from thick creams, which may cut off the oxygen to the skin causing poor circulation and puffiness around the eyes that we work so hard to get rid of.

To those of us who splurge on collagen creams should probably try sleeping more; invest in silky, soft sheets (it’s less expensive overtime), and the side effect; a great boost to your immune system! It’s no secret that sleep deprivation can cause dark circles and puffy eyes. But also, the position in which you sleep can make it worse.Try to train yourself to sleep on your back with your head slightly raised above your body. Sleeping in this position will help stop the fluid from accumulating under your eyes, decreasing dark circles and puffiness. It helps with the wrinkles too. So give into your guilty pleasure and rest assured, this one is good for you! <

> Our great city has no shortage of competent lawyers practicing their trade but we thought it would be interesting and informative to present a sampling of law professionals in our midst who represent a diverse range of expertise in practicing their specialties. Most states typically require a four-year undergraduate degree, followed by another three years, and usually at an American Bar Association accredited law school, to earn a Juris Doctor degree. All states require prospective lawyers to take and pass a written Bar examination in order to be licensed. Somewhat surprisingly, some states allow law students to study in law offices as opposed to accredited law schools and a few others allow students to study through correspondence schools. Please rest assured that all of the attorneys being profiled have successfully completed their educational and Florida Bar requirements with a high level of achievement, compiling a cumulative list of notable industry awards, recognition and honors over the years. Our list of attorneys represent a wide range of legal practice to include mediation and arbitration, tax law (state and local), real estate (closing, land development, etc.),bankruptcy (creditor’s rights, etc.),criminal matters, civil trial, workers’ compensation and employment law (employer’s defense, women’s workplace legal needs, intellectual property protection), family law (divorce, living trusts, wills and probate), commercial litigation (business transactions, products liability, insurance) and administrative law. <

Denise Dell-Powell Bankruptcy, Creditors’ Rights, Commercial Litigation Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> One of few native Floridians, Denise Dell-Powell is a Partner in the Southeast law firm of Burr & Forman LLP and has been practicing for 20 years specializing in Bankruptcy, Creditors’ Rights, and Commercial Litigation. She was recently honored with the distinction of being named as the “Best Lawyers’ Lawyer of The Year, LitigationBankruptcy Orlando” for 2012. Why Creditors’ Rights and Bankruptcy? “In Bankruptcy, you must find solutions involving several areas of the law, not just those that seem apparent. Bankruptcy allows me to use my own knowledge, as well as my colleagues’ knowledge, to the benefit of my clients. Each day brings the opportunity to explore a different issue which keeps the practice challenging and interesting.” Denise was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida where she graduated from Gainesville High School and attended the University of Florida. Ultimately, she obtained her Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University but when questioned of her allegiance she remarked, “I will always bleed blue and orange.” With a desire to make her mark in the legal industry, Denise selected to attend Mercer University as her father advised her to “learn her craft, and not be just another number.” That advice has paid off. Denise began her career in the law firm of Baumer, Bradford & Walters, P.A. developing her skills through representation of debtors in large retail bankruptcies. When Orlando became home in 1997, Denise drew upon the knowledge she had gained from her debtor representation to benefit her new firm’s creditor client base. “I think having

the experience representing both debtors and creditors gives me a unique perspective on how each side thinks, which can be invaluable to my clients.” Like her commitment to the state of Florida, Denise is committed to her clients and is thankful for the opportunities they have afforded her and the recognition they have given her through various honors and awards. Denise has been listed as a Best Lawyer since 2006, a Florida Super Lawyer since 2007, and is AV Pre-Eminent rated by Martindale Hubbell. She is active in the local and state bar and currently serves on the Executive Counsel for the Business Law Section of The Florida Bar. Denise is admitted to practice in the U.S. District Court for all districts in Florida and the U.S. District Court for Northern and Middle Districts of Georgia. In 2003, Denise married Dudley Powell and they have two children, Gray and Madeline Grace. When not at work, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family. “Having a family definitely changes your perspective. Work is obviously important but finding a balance between work and family life is something I strive to do.” If Denise were not an accomplished Bankruptcy and Commercial Litigator, she would use her passion for the law in the area of adoption. “Both of my beautiful children are adopted. We were very lucky to work with a wonderful adoption agency that made the process much more manageable. I know that a lot of people do not have the positive experience I had and I would like to be able to use what I have learned through personal experience to help folks through the process.” < Special Promotional Feature

Rachel A. Gorenflo Family Law Photo by: Steven Miller www.StevenMillerPix.com Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Rachel A. Gorenflo is one of only 278 out of 91,368 attorneys certified by the Florida Bar as a specialist in marital and family law. She began practicing law in 1994. However, her dream of becoming an accomplished attorney began years before. In 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor became the first woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court of the United States. When I sat down to talk to her, Rachel recalled the significant impact it had on her. “Here was a woman who was now in the position to make decisions affecting the whole country, even the entire world. It just seemed like anything was possible.” From that day forward, she set her aspirations on becoming an outstanding attorney like her inspiration Justice O’Connor. In high school, Rachel discovered that she had a natural aptitude for accounting. Always having a futuristic outlook, she was aware of the advantage of combining her propensity for mathematics with a law degree. Upon graduating from Jacksonville University, Rachel became qualified as a Certified Public Accountant and went on to achieve her Juris Doctorate from Stetson University. Rachel has been practicing marital and family law in the Orlando region for more than 16 years. She is a certified family law mediator and has been collaboratively trained to assist parties in dispute resolution avoiding

prolonged, costly, and acrimonious litigation. With her extensive experience and knowledge, she has been able to expertly guide clients through what is generally considered to be a very difficult and stressful time. When I asked her where people make their biggest mistake in handling a divorce, she replied, “A lot of people hire inexperienced lawyers or attempt to handle their divorces on their own. Some people lose rights, money and property as a result and by the time they seek my expertise, it ends up being exceedingly more costly than if they had sought experienced help to begin with.” Over the past four years, Rachel has been recognized as a “Super Lawyer” by her peers. She has served on the Board of Governors of the Florida Bar,Young Lawyer’s division, as a representative of the 18th Judicial Circuit. She was President of the Family Law Section of the Seminole County Bar Association in 1999 and President of the Seminole County Bar Association in 2002. She is currently on the board of the Central Florida Family Law Inns of Court. Rachel currently works at Gray & Gorenflo, P.A. with her husband of 16 years, Clifton H. Gorenflo. When not working, she enjoys spending time with her two young sons whom she describes as the lights of her life. “Family is our priority and at our practice we put family first”. <

Travis Hollifield women’s workplace legal needs Photo by: Steven Miller www.StevenMillerPix.com Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Hollifield Legal Centre is a private law firm focusing on women’s workplace legal needs. “Our vision is to champion the legal, social and economic rights of women by providing representation in all Florida state and federal courts of law,” says Hollifield. The firm’s legal services are offered to assist working women with employment law issues such as: • Sexual harassment • Pregnancy discrimination • Family and Medical Leave Act claims • Retaliation • Severance Agreements “When I first started practicing employment law I noticed that many statutes either exclusively or disproportionately affected women. At the time, there weren’t any attorneys focusing on these cases specifically,” says Travis Hollifield. “I created Hollifield Legal Centre to empower women facing difficulties with employers in workplace settings.” Achieving the goals of clients effectively and discreetly is Hollifield’s primary concern. At the Centre, clients are treated with respect, compassion and sensitivity in a confidential and nurturing environment particularly attuned to the needs of working women.

“Many times my clients are in vulnerable positions such as a single mother whose job is her and her children’s lifeline. There is often a great deal of economic disruption and emotional distress that goes along with improper separations of employment,” says Hollifield. Mr. Hollifield is a Central Florida native who, after graduating from Winter Park High School, embarked on a five-year career in the radio broadcasting business as an on-air personality known as Travis McKay. break came when he was hired by Z100 in New York City where he worked on the “The Z Morning Zoo” program. While at Z100, Hollifield was a card carrying member of the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists (AFTRA) union where he first developed his interest in worker’s rights. Despite his success in radio, Hollifield craved more intellectual challenges so he enrolled at UCF and later obtained his law degree at Nova Southeastern University. In addition to his employment law practice, Hollifield also litigates intellectual property cases to help protect the creative endeavors of businesses and individuals. “It’s a different kind of practice,” says Hollifield. “I guide clients so they can make a clearheaded decision about whether or not their or their competitors’ activities amount to copyright, trademark, or patent infringement or misappropriation of trade secrets.” Hollifield is also an adjunct law professor at Barry University’s law school in Orlando where he has taught intellectual property and entertainment law in recent years. In addition, Hollifield has maintained a busy mediation practice since becoming a Florida Supreme Court certified Circuit Civil Mediator. “Mediation is altogether different than litigating as an advocate,” Hollifield noted. “As a mediator, I act as a neutral and help parties make rational decisions regarding whether to settle their claims before trial.” Hollifield is an enthusiastic supporter of UCF athletics and the Orlando Magic. Hollifield’s wife Audra is the Vice President of Human Resources and Administrative Services for the Orlando Magic. The Hollifields live in Orlando with their two English bulldogs Beeman and Burlington. <

> In 1973 Mark Horwitz moved to Orlando and served as an Assistant United States Attorney until 1980. While representing the United States he prosecuted all types of cases including Medicare fraud, tax evasion, wire and mail fraud, fraud against the government, drugs and the murder of the Gotha Postmaster. The opportunity to prosecute these and other crimes provided Mr. Horwitz a solid basis to vigorously defend people under investigation for or charged with federal crimes. Since 1980, Mark has been in private practice in Orlando. He has defended people in Orlando and other areas of Florida and the United States. Defending complex federal white collar crimes has been a major part of his practice. He has also defended clients in state criminal matters including white collar crimes, theft, bribery and state sales tax. In non-white collar cases, he has defended clients in matters involving vehicular homicide, murder, drugs and sex crimes. Mark Horwitz is certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy as a Criminal Trial Advocate and by the Florida Bar as a specialist in Criminal Trial Law. He has the highest possible rating in both legal ability and ethical standards by Martindale-Hubbel. In addition to the preeminent rating in Martindale-Hubbel, he is listed in Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Horwitz is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Mr. Horwitz believes that defending a person’s liberty is the most important responsibility an attorney can undertake. In protecting a client’s freedom, Mark’s philosophy is that no stone is left unturned, all facts are thoroughly investigated, legal issues fully developed and all actions legally and ethically possible are undertaken for the defense. The lawyers and paralegals that work at the Horwitz firm help him carry out these principles.

By preventing criminal charges, the client is able to avoid the humiliation and emotional stress associated with indictment and arrest. In some cases it is not possible to prevent the filing of criminal charges. In those situations the pre-arrest defense investigation allows for a stronger defense at trial. It is not unusual to deal with tens of thousands of documents and hundreds of gigabytes of computer data in white collar cases. To control such massive amounts of evidence, Horwitz utilizes the paralegals and the attorneys that work in his firm as well as current technology. When asked to draw a parallel between teaching the law and practicing law, Mr. Lo-

When you can convince your audience that you and your client are right and your opponent is wrong, there’s nothing more thrilling than that.” Although he comes from a long line of attorneys in their native Colombia, Mr. Lopez’s father tried talking his son out of becoming a lawyer. “According to my dad, being a lawyer is not the glamorous and re spectable career that it should be or that it once was thanks to lawyers who cheat, deceive clients or break the rules – acts which have understandably brought shame and distrust to the profession. Can You Die from a Broken Heart? By: Deborah F. Harding, MD Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> The idea of dying from a broken heart may seem to most as nothing more than a legend – however research has proven the reality of such an occurrence. When people encounter a sudden emotional trauma, a flood of stress hormones are unleashed, sometimes taking a drastic toll on the heart. This release of hormones can cause a sudden life-threatening heart spasm in otherwise healthy people. For centuries, doctors have understood that emotional shocks can trigger a heart attack and even sudden death. One women experienced sudden and intense chest pain after having an emotional shock about her son’s car accident. After being rushed to the hospital and treated for what doctors believed was a heart attack, it was discovered the women had instead experienced an unusual malfunction, otherwise referred to as Broken Heart Syndrome. How Does Broken Heart Syndrome Occur?

Research has proven when the heart is put under sudden emotional stress, the body’s natural “fight or flight” mode is in-

styletome.com

stigated and a flood of the stress hormones Adrenaline and Cortisol are released into the bloodstream. This jolt of hormones can cause the heart to temporarily malfunction and not pump well. It can look and feel like a heart attack, however, this is only the heart breaking say researchers. This potentially harmful heart spasm is technically known as stress cardiomyopathy, otherwise referred to as Broken Heart Syndrome. This syndrome is typically more common in men with low Testosterone levels and in postmenopausal women. Some individuals are more susceptible to the coronary effects of these hormones. The good news is the broken heart syndrome may be preventable. If it occurs, it usually is treatable and the condition usually reverses itself within a couple of weeks. How You May Prevent a Broken Heart Syndrome

While Broken Heart Syndrome is unpredictable we can still be proactive about our heart health. We can feel healthier, look younger, and not just treat diseases but also prevent them from occurring in the first place. By utilizing sophisticated blood

work you can monitor the levels of your stress hormones such as Cortisol before life’s curve ball ever finds you. Using pharmaceutical grade nutritional supplements such as CoQ10, which plays a major role in supporting heart health, you can keep a stronger, healthier heart prepared for the unforeseeable. The implementation of a regular exercise program has proven over and over to keep the heart and mind healthier and lower stress hormone levels. There are also available nutritional supplements to support and enhance our ability to handle chronic and even sudden stress. While we cannot stop life from happening, we can ensure that our bodies are stronger at the molecular level to be better prepared to take the blows and hopefully prevent or bounce back quicker even from a broken heart. “My goal is to give you the power to live your life as you want it to be, a life full of energy, love, vitality, optimal health and total happiness.” - Dr. Deb <

THE FIFTH AMENDMENT: by Mark L. Horwitz > People think of the Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination as a tool used bythose who have violated the law. This is simply wrong.

The founding fathers who drafted the Constitution knew that without this protection, governments throughout history abused their citizens and punished the innocent. The Law Offices of Mark L. Horwitz - A Professional Association 17 E. Pine St. Orlando, FL 32801 407-843-7733 mark@mlhorwitzlaw.com www.mlhorwitzlaw.com

Today, people have the misconception that simply because someone has invoked their Fifth Amendment privilege, that person must be guilty. This belief can not be further from the truth.

State and federal governments continuously pass criminal laws that set forth complicated and hard to understand provisions that criminalize conduct far beyond what the constitution’s authors ever imagined. The Supreme Court of the United States has on more than one occasion recognized that the Fifth Amendment’s basic function is to protect the innocent who might otherwise be ensnared by ambiguous circumstances. Those ambiguous circumstances have become more likely as the complexities of criminal laws continues to grow. In 2001, the

Supreme Court of the United States specifically ruled that a person can claim to be innocent and still properly invoke the Fifth Amendment privilege against self-incrimination. False confessions, long extended interrogations, mistakes by police and countless other factors have resulted in convictions of the innocent. The right of a person not to be forced to be “a witness against himself” is not reserved for the guilty. <

Yusuf Yildiz GM & Wine Director at Norman’s restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes By: Jennifer Marcus Read more at: StyleToMe.com

Chef Norman Van Aken and Yusuf Yildiz

styletome.com

> Norman’s Restaurant at the RitzCarlton Orlando, Grande Lakes is one of the precious gems in Central Florida. Known for elite and quality service, spectacular and delicious dishes, an extensive wine list and impeccable attention to detail, Norman’s Restaurant has become one of the top restaurants in Orlando. Located at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton, which is one of the most admired brand names in the world, Norman’s and the Ritz-Carlton have a seamless relationship creating the perfect experience for guests. Norman’s is held to one of the highest standards in the industry and lives up to its expectations due to the superior staff and visionary team. A man who is an exemplary extension of the brand is Yusuf Yildiz, General Manager and Wine Director of the award-winning Norman’s Restaurant. Yildiz has found his home here in Orlando, Florida. Born in Istanbul City, Turkey, he grew up in what he calls the “capital of the world.” Istanbul is the world’s third largest

metropolitan city and is a cultural, economic, and financial megacity. At 13, Yildiz was looking to start working and found a job at a local tavern. He spent much of his time polishing glasses and began learning the tools of the trade. The tavern did not sell spirits but had a variety of local Turkish, Greek and Bulgarian wines. He took interest in the variety of wines and enjoyed the nuances of wine tasting along with being around the restaurant business.Yildiz soon realized this was a field he was interested in. Yildiz attended Turkey’s famous Eresin Tourism and Hospitality School and graduated in 1991. While attending school, Yildiz worked at The Renaissance Hotel in Istanbul City and worked in the kitchen before taking a job at the front of the house as a bartender engaging with, and educating guests about wines and food. At the end of earning his degree, Yildiz joined the Turkish Armed Forces and spent two years fighting for his country. Yildiz’s

brother worked for Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and would often come home and share stories about the excitement of traveling, meeting people from across the world, and he “would show me lots of pictures of girls.” Yildiz thought this would be the perfect opportunity to combine traveling while working in the hospitality industry, so he joined Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and became the Assistant Dining Room Manager traveling around the Caribbean, Alaska and Hawaii. After several years working on the ship, Yildiz came home and managed his family’s import/export business for a brief stint also traveling around the world. It was then he realized his sights were set on America. “America is the best of the best because no matter what, you’ll always be welcome,” says Yildiz, who has visited more than 83 countries. Yildiz received an offer from the Cipriani Restaurant Group in New York City and headed to work in the Big Apple. He excelled in his role and continued to add to his array of management skills. His next career path took him down to the Sunshine State as the Dining Room Manager at DOC’s in downtown Orlando, Florida. He worked alongside Chef Neil Connolly who was the personal Chef for the Kennedy Family during their reign in The White House. “It was amazing working with someone who was the chef for one of the greatest presidents.” In his role at DOC’s,Yildiz helped redevelop the menu. His position required him to know what the customers preferred and to keep the menu up to date with the trends of the food and wine industry. It was also important to him to have a well-trained staff. “You cannot serve the best food without trained servers,” said Yildiz. “The server must love what they are doing.” Yildiz worked to put a team together at DOC’s that would understand the wines, how to pair them, the technique, and the knowledge of old and new world cuisine. Yildiz also understood that there was a big cultural difference between New York City and Orlando as many of the servers in The City Beautiful were college students. But

with training, Yildiz was able to put a team together to fit his vision. After working for DOC’s downtown, Yildiz headed over to the famous AAA Five Diamond Restaurant, Victoria and Albert’s at Walt Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. This restaurant gives new meaning to the words “fine dining.” The ‘avant-garde menu inspired by pristine ingredients from the global market,’ is comprised of a variety of courses giving you the experience of a private Chef’s table. It’s a one-of-a-kind dining experience and Yildiz appreciates the opportunity he had to work in Walt Disney’s flagship restaurant. And then came his dream job…the General Manager of the famed Norman’s Restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. Norman’s Restaurant was created by Chef Norman Van Aken who is best known for creating and developing the idea for fusionstyle cooking, This New World cuisine is a blend of Latin, Asian, African, American, and Caribbean flavors. Norman’s has a lengthy list of accolades that can be found on its Web site but most recently earned Forbes magazine Four Star Restaurant. As the General Manager,Yildiz oversees the operations of the award-winning restaurant. “The buck stops here,” says Yildiz. “I have to take the responsibility and make the final decisions.”

choose from that will definitely satisfy the most delicate of palates. Just describe what you would like in a wine and presto, he will find that perfect one. Yildiz and the team at Norman’s are excited for their Valentine’s Day menu. Guests can choose from within each of the four courses. The yucca stuffed crispy shrimp with sour orange mojo, habanera tarter salsa, and Nicaraguan slaw will have your taste buds dancing. Try next the cherry pork with sherry reduction and cherry chutney for the perfect blend of sweet and savory. And you will have to save room for the flourless chocolate cake with Frangelico ganache, salted caramel cream and chocolate covered almond. You’ll want to book a room at the luxurious Ritz-Carlton so that after you’ve indulged in dinner, you can stroll along the grounds and savor the moment with your significant other. “It’s a great exclusive dinner for couples with a menu created just for Valentine’s Day.” Yildiz wears many hats managing the team at Norman’s and has been a tremendous edition. Guests keep coming back to enjoy the new world cuisine that has been taken to a whole new level. With Chef Van Aken’s vision,Yildiz’s experience, and some fabulous food, Norman’s Restaurant will continue to be one of the most delicious and beautiful restaurants in Orlando. <

Yildiz leads the chefs, event managers, sommeliers, servers, and the rest of the team with hopes to create the perfect balance of taste and experience. At Norman’s, Yildiz and the chefs ensure that the ingredients chosen are the freshest available in the market, which is a result of a constantly changing menu. “The food is never frozen. It comes straight from the farm to the table,” says Yildiz. Yildiz is also the Wine Director for the restaurant and works closely with the eleven in-house sommeliers to ensure that guests are educated on what the perfect pairings are to compliment guests’ meals. There are wine tastings every two days at the restaurant as well as seasonal wine pairing five-course meals. Yildiz has also selected 30 amazing wines by the glass to

Our Town StarLite Film Festival at Garden Theatre Winter Garden, FL- The Garden Theatre introduces the first-ever StarLite Film Festival February 2-5, 2012. This oneof-a-kind micro-budget film festival promotes the screening and development of feature length narrative films from across the globe that are produced, shot and completed for a total budget of less than $100,000. Over the course of four days the film festival will feature a dozen hand-selected films screened at the Garden Theatre in historic downtown Winter Garden, Florida. The StarLite Film Festival is named after the original StarLite Drive-in Theater built in 1949. The vintage outdoor cinema was built on seven acres near East Plant Street in Winter Garden, where Central Floridians watched films under starlit skies. The StarLite Film Festival was the last operational drive-in theater in Central Florida until it closed in January of 1997. February 2 to February 5, 2012 at 12:00 am Garden Theatre 160 W. Plant St. Winter Garden, FL 34787 407-877-4736 Lebowski Fest Orlando Altamonte Springs, FL- Lebowski Fest is a celebration of all things related to the 1998 Coen brothers cult comedy, “The Big Lebowski.” Fans of the film (aka “Achievers”) come from far and wide to drink white Russians, throw some rocks and party with an array of Dudes, Walters and Maudes (not to mention a nihilist or two). It’s a two-day party that typically opens with live performances and screening of the film the first night and concludes with a raucous bowling party the following night. The First Annual Lebowski Fest was in 2002 in Louisville, but subsequent fests have been held in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Las Vegas, Austin, Seattle, London and Edinburgh. While the Coen brothers continue to maintain a safe distance from the madness they created, the fest has earned the blessing of the Dude himself, Jeff Bridges, who attended the fest in L.A. and even stuck around to sing a few songs. How to Attract a ‘Valentine’ with Your Dog By: Kayla Hernandez Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> We’ve all seen it before in movies: men shamelessly using their dog to grab the attention of a female passerby. After seeing a man enthusiastic about playing fetch with their puppy, women swoon, because, clearly, a man that can love a dog can love a woman (disclaimer: results vary in real life). If you’ve ever wondered about using the tactic, what better time is there then now when Valentine’s Day is on the agenda?

If you’ve had Gucci, the Yorkie who wears a bow on her head, for 3 years and you need a date…there’s still hope. First off, head to a dog park. People there are less likely to dislike animals or flare up in hives when they get near one, so they’re your best bet. Also, fellow pet owners understand that it takes responsibility and commitment to own a dog, which are good traits to look for in a “significant other.”

It is not advisable to purchase a pet with the sole purpose of finding a girlfriend/boyfriend, but there are specific breeds that are known to better entice women and men. If men want a dog that reflects their masculinity, Boxers, Rottweilers, Mastiffs, Doberman Pinschers, and Siberian Huskies are the way to go. If instead, they want to exude a heyI-want-to-settle-down-too-vibe, German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Beagles, and Golden Retrievers are the best breeds.

So go ahead, play with your dog and show your fun-loving personality. Get up and run around or throw the Frisbee to your dog, so he or she can see that you’re active and energetic. It’s also a good time to show off a few tricks your dog knows. Try getting your dog to, WITHOUT making it obvious, head over to the person. Maybe throw the ball that direction, run with the dog near him or her, or, if your dog is well trained enough, send the dog over with something in its mouth, perhaps a flower?

As for women, it is advised to pick a dog that would reflect the type of man you want to attract. For example, Labradors, Bloodhounds, and Chesapeake Bay retrievers is recommended if you’re looking for Mr. Outdoorsy. For the bad boy type, try a Rottweiler, English Bulldog, or Bullmastiff. Again, the family man is attracted to Golden Retrievers, Beagles, and Collies. Unfortunately, this means your “purse dog” will only attract those who DO own purses.
