Greg Alexander Greg Alexander is a world citizen who travels the planet to transmute all the quintessence of femininity on glazed paper. If he nourishes an atavistic passion for Greece, the ground of his ancestors, it’s in Paris that he has found his home port. As a photographer, he continues his dream of perfection because, according to him, “the photograph is a kind of plastic surgery which is able to modulate a face ad infinitum!” His vision of beauty is fragile, transitory, a little kitsch and inevitably fatal.

CELEBRITY SOUP

Mind, Body & Soul

The Spiritual Side of Today’s Superstars

By Alyssa Thomann

> Life is a chaotic string of events pulling us in different directions and leaving our bodies full of stress. It is impossible to deny the stresses we encounter from day to day. We all are victims. Some people let it build up and get the best of them ending in a big explosion of anger or worse, while others ease their way out of it and start everyday as a new beginning. I commend those who have their methods to keep their mind and body calm. Especially those who are the focus of the public eye like today’s Hollywood superstars. If I had to wake up every morning dodging paparazzi cameras and swarming crowds of people, I would need a stress outlet as well. Let’s see how these celebrities keep their mind, body and soul at ease while living such hectic lives.

Adam Levin, Maroon 5’s frontman and judge on The Voice, was once a skeptic about the yoga scene. He admits to once believing it was a cheesy celebrity cliché. However, his workouts at the gym were becoming more harmful than helpful. His body was constantly in pain and his physique was becoming too bulky turning him into what he claimed to be “a monster!” He decided, that for his body and peace of mind, he would give yoga a shot. 5 years later he’s still doing it. Levine believes that yoga molds the body to give it a much more natural look and feel. The physical payoff is a definite factor as to why he has become such a yogi, but he also claims that his routines are so therapeutic they help him to balance out his busy career. At every concert backstage there is a room

STYLETOME.COM

labeled “yoga” and before every concert where he must perform in front of thousands of people, an hour worth of yoga leaves him physically relaxed and ready for anything. Actress and director, Drew Barrymore, is one to fully encompass and embrace her spirituality on a daily basis. No more than two years ago, she endeavored on a solotrip to Delhi, India where she stayed for two weeks to take a break from her busy life and career. She was in need of a “shift of consciousness”. During her time abroad she was studying spirituality and religion. Barrymore took trips to different temples, explored and walked barefoot through the streets. She had amazing conversation and realized what a different experience it is to

journey alone. While there, she vowed that for the sake of her mind and soul she must take breaks from her busy life and venture out into the massive world. Delhi was just a single trip and she plans on many more endeavors. Through travel and meditation, Barrymore is able to keep hold of the reigns of her lifethis is her stress relief. She says that praying, thinking about friends and never losing sight of all that you have are the most important ways to keep a happy mind and soul. Madonna, 50 years old and still beautiful in both her body and mind has never let her extensive fame and fortune take from her what means the most - her spirituality and soul. After giving birth, to her daughter, Lourdes, Madonna began to pick up yoga to get her body back into shape. It has been

over a decade and she is still practicing the soothing and wellness exercise. She believes yoga is a metaphor for life. That you must take both life and yoga slowly; never rush. You cannot skip to the next position as you cannot skip ahead in life either. She explains that during your yoga routine, you may find yourself in some humiliating positions but you cannot judge yourself. Just breathe and let go.

Tapping into his spirituality and focusing on the betterment of his body and mind may have been what saved Robert Downey Jr. from his addiction to drugs. 25 HOUR

The Secret to the

th

By Hebah Abdelqader Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> We live in an age where twenty-four hours in a day is just not enough. Everyone is always on the run. Things need to happen fast, they need to be done yesterday and we pay for it with our health. Some say the advance in technology will be the death of us, but we say otherwise. We have found a twenty-fifth hour and we want to share this secret with you. There is an application for almost anything these days.We want to introduce you to the top three that will enhance your body, mind and soul. The result is a healthier body that diets smarter, sleeps better and is very active. Sound impossible? Fear not my friend, we have tested them out ourselves and it is very much possible. The quality of your sleep determines your performance during the day. Even sleeping eight hours a night does not mean that your body has fully recharged. Sleep Cycle, an application developed by Maciek Drejak, will record your sleep patterns and help you figure out a better sleeping habit. Your body moves differently during the various cycles of sleep and the app recognizes this. The way it works is it uses the accelerometer in your iPhone to sense your movement while you’re sleeping to measure sleep quality. It also allows you to record

STYLETOME.COM

what you have done during the day and connects that information to the type of sleep quality you had. After using the application for a period of time you will adjust your behaviors and mimic the days you experienced excellent sleep. We noticed that a healthier diet during the day lead to better sleep during the night. Understanding the nutrition facts on the foods that you eat will lead to educated eating habits. Being aware of the content of the food you are about to introduce to your body will lead to smarter eating, and a healthier diet.

“There is an application for almost anything these days. We want to introduce you to the top three that will enhance your body, mind and soul. ” Lose It, a dieting app, will calculate the amount of calories you need to consume each day to maintain or lose weight. Exceeding this calorie count will cause you to gain weight; rarely anyone wants that. This application contains a large database of foods with their nutrition facts, and if it’s not in there, just scan the barcode of the food item and voilà. It is food journal-

ing made simple. The way it works is that it gives you a daily budget of calories to lose weight. If you want to eat more, you have to exercise more to balance your calorie budget. And when you come across a food item that will eat up most of your calorie budget you will learn to make an educated decision not to consume it. Wanting to burn more calories leads to more exercise and a healthier body. The most important muscle to exercise is your heart and what’s a better way to do it then running or cycling. Strava, a social fitness application, is our favorite exercise app. It records your route, level of activity and time you spend running or cycling. It also allows you to share your results socially, which ignites competition within your circle of friends. Our bodies are like machines. In Case You Missed It Style Events, News & Gossip from Around the City By Charnel Wright Read more at: StyleToMe.com All American Rejects

> Social butterflies united in all the foodfulfilling, libation loving and entertainment enticing glory the past month’s events had to offer. To kick things off, The Downtown Food and Wine Festival at Lake Eola, February 23rd-24th provided a bastion of delectable delights fit for all kings and queens who rule over Orlando’s social stratosphere. Event organizers promised the weekend would be a “Treat for all Senses” and judging by the virtual sea of revelers drawn to the event—totaling in the thousands—most would agree, the description was spot-on. The area’s top restaurants showcased a variety of foods with more than 100 menu items for guests to choose from. A personal favorite and the overall Foodie Award Winner, Dexter’s of Thornton Park with its unique Crown Royal Maple Bacon Skewer, was the savory and sweet dish that had it all and caused a near crowd frenzy. With a Chef Stage featuring live cooking demonstrations from local and national celebrity chefs, the event became part Food Network and part trendy “pop-up” restaurant dining all rolled into one. There were fourteen wine stations with 50 varieties of vino varietals from around the world. Entertainment heavyweights, the band All American Rejects and singer, Andy Grammar were just some of the rock royals rocking the crowds on the main stage.

Keeping with food and wine as the general theme, The Taste of Windermere at the Pines on March 9th was next on the list. The event transformed downtown Windermere into a foodies’ dream, showcasing samplings from area restaurants, great wines from the Wine Barn and a plethora of beer selections from World of Beer. A portion of the funds raised went toward scholarships for local deserving students. Wrap up the food and let fashionable finery of the masked-kind take center stage. The one glamour event where mystery ruled the evening and a hidden face was essential to the night’s alluring attire. Those factors paired with letting your eyes do the talking with your best come-hither look, made for a night to remember at Guys with Ties Philanthropy’s 2013 Lucky Masquerade, hosted at Ember in downtown Orlando. The March 15th event, rife with seduction and boiling over with intrigue as guests got the chance to channel their inner mysterious flair while enjoying drinks and good conversation all for a good cause. Proceeds from the event benefited the charity, UCANSKI2, water skiing for people with disabilities. It was time to unmask on March 24th as high fashion and high tea collided. More than fifty women and young girls got the chance

to indulge in the days of old with a modern twist for an enchanting afternoon at The Spoon Full of Sugar High Tea & Fashion Show in downtown Orlando’s Double Tree by Hilton. Guests revisited a bygone era where women wore their finest hats, gloves and pearls while sipping tea and enjoying white-glove service of savories and sweets. The guests were regaled by the latest spring looks on the runway from Tuni’s, Lilly Pulitzer, Liz’s and Bebe’s. The fashion show was emceed by radio personality, Leslye Gale. All proceeds went toward Kids Beating Cancer. A celebration of big hearts and generosity, as the American Heart Association had its 2013 Orlando Heart Ball on March 9th. The Loews Royal Pacific Resort served as this year’s venue where 200 volunteers and donors enjoyed live music, dancing, fine dining and silent auctions. Last years’ national campaign raised $51-million. < Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? Do Tell!

YOUR LIFE

Healthy Enough to be a Legal Permanent Resident of the United States? By Mark NeJame Contributor Nayef A. Mubarak, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> The law defines all sorts of things. It defines mental capacity, intent, contracts, trusts, and even nuisances. Most do not know it, but the law also defines who is healthy and who is not. More precisely, the law defines which categories of non-citizens are unhealthy and thus inadmissible to the United States. Section 212(a)(1)(A)(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act states “… any alien who is determined to have a communicable disease of public health significance” is ineligible to receive a visa and ineligible to be admitted in to the United States.

“Perhaps Congress’ original intent was to protect citizens of our country, but in practice the law was discriminatory and harmful and so it was repealed.”

Mark NeJame

STYLETOME.COM

What is the legal definition of a disease of public significance? Here is a short list of some of the diseases of public significance: chancroid, gonorrhea, granuloma inguinal, leprosy (infectious), syphilis, and tuberculosis. The Secretary of Health and Human Services (HSS) determines this list. The list of diseases that are of public significance is not limited to the designations made by the HSS. In addition to the designations of HSS, other quarantinable diseases can be added to the list through Presidential Executive Order, and those diseases that are considered public health emergencies by the World Health Organization (WHO). Although the above list may have made you cringe, the reality of the situation is many of the diseases are quite common and/or treatable. Whether people admit it or not, it is highly likely that some friends or family members may have or have had the above diseases. How would we cope with being separated from our family member, whether a spouse, child, or parent, because they had gonorrhea? Although the hypothetical seems grotesque and playful, the truth of the matter is it is reality for some individuals. Luckily, waivers are offered for certain family members and certain diseases. Filing a waiver can be quite complicated. It requires additional fees and documentation. Although it may delay the family reunification,

complicate cases, and increases costs for the individual, the families could eventually be reunited if the applicant is able to meet the difficult requirements of the waiver. Needless to say, activists and rights groups have historically challenged this issue. Just recently in 2008, Congress repealed the HIV/AIDS admission bar. Technically, prior to 2008, you were unable to become a legal resident of the United States if you were HIV positive or infected with AIDS. Now if this is really thought about, this was not only an issue for those seeking to enter the United States from abroad, but it was also a hurdle for those individuals already in the United States. For example, if someone entered the United States legally as a student, contracted HIV while in the United States, and eventually married a USC, that individual was technically unable to become a legal permanent resident through their marriage. In order to qualify for waiver one would have to demonstrate three things. First, a qualifying family member is needed such as a spouse, child, or parent. Second, the applicant must establish danger to public health and the possibility of spread of infection posed by the applicant’s condition is minimal.Thirdly, the applicant must demonstrate how they will financially support their medical treatment in the US at no cost to the US government. Given this high standard for a waiver, it is no wonder many of these applications were denied and families were kept apart. Perhaps Congress’ original intent was to protect citizens of our country, but in practice the law was discriminatory and harmful and so it was repealed. So, are you healthy enough, legally, to become a legal resident of the United States? The answer is probably “yes,” but this is today, after substantial changes in the law and applications for waivers of inadmissibility. The answer may not have been the same just a few years ago. <

The Venetian Room

> For a truly unique and unforgettable dining experience this AAA Four-Diamond award-winning restaurant situated within the Caribe Royale Orlando Hotel, only minutes from Disney, offers much more than a fine dining experience, which is imminently apparent upon entering the premises. Upon arriving I was promptly welcomed into the very lush ‘holding area’ by an attentive, friendly and social host named Gerry. He arranged for something immediate with which to ‘wet my whistle’ and enhanced an at-home feeling with the wonderful combination of his great personality and humor… a welcoming mix which made more ‘palatable’ the wait for the remainder of our party to arrive! People-watching while seated in a luxuriously cushioned chair was especially entertaining. Neatly attired hosts with fitted black suits and perfectly tied crisp bow ties greeted guests with friendly welcoming smiles. I witnessed an elegant couple stroll thru the black double doors. The well-coiffed lady wore an excited smile across her carefully painted lips. She entered wearing a short

blue and silver sequined dress and was accompanied by an equally smartly dressed gentleman. This upscale attire seemed the rule amongst the many dinner guests, setting the tone for this very classy establishment. In short time our party rendezvous was complete and we four were led to our neatly arranged table beside a wide panoramic window overlooking the immaculate Caribe Royale interior where we were warmly greeted by our server, who introduced himself as ‘Yann,’ an eight-year veteran of The Venetian Room. He wasted little time in jumping right into a complete and informative recitation of the evening menu…complete with vivid, mouth-watering and oftentimes humorous detail. No feast can begin without the preparatory stress-reducing qualities brought on by the process of imbibing so our group quickly moved in unison to the study of an extensive wine list, which happens to be a crucial segment of any worthwhile dining out experience! This place knows plenty when it comes to fine wines, evidenced by

its winning the 2012 Foodie Award for “Orlando’s Best Wine List.” Beginning with the basic ‘whites’ of Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc to the ‘reds’ of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, one can become lost in the magnitude of choices. So, to jumpstart the evening I selected an incredibly smooth Stags’ Leap Napa Valley Chardonnay to get things going. Our appetizer selection was varied but that didn’t interfere with our “practice makes perfect” wine-sipping approach. During the wait our taste buds were teased with ripe, fresh strawberries along with a basket of breads and butters. Warm, crunchy miniature loaves of French baguette, cinnamon and raisin and more were coupled with a delectable selection of buttery spreads, which included roasted garlic and sweet maple. Perfectly timed, our appetizers were served which included gnocchi stroganoff made with petite filet of beef, sun dried tomato, potato gnocchi, cognac cream pearl onion sauce and truffle shavings. Add to this the pan-fried lump crab cake with Pommery

cream mustard sauce and the incredibly fresh and crispy Phyllo-wrapped Ahi tuna and Asian salad...yummy! Next came a unique presentation of lobster bisque soup. Thick chunks of fresh lobster meat in sherry topped with a baked puff pastry had me thinking this feast had reached its apex. Creamy and delicious, this was the winner of the evening, moving things dangerously close to satisfying me to the point of not having much more capacity to continue. My thought was that future visits would require a more intense plan of portion intake control! Now for the arrival of a sampling of three different salad plates. We shared bites of a Venetian (fresh tomato, chèvre cheese tossed in a chili-infused balsamic), a Belgian endive and watercress and the beefsteak tomato with buffalo mozzarella cheese salads, all combining to form a bouquet of delicious colors and flavors. This was thankfully followed by a brief ‘intermezzo’ in the form of a palate cleansing sweet and fruity sorbet, served in a beautiful, flower-shaped glass, which offered a timely transition in prepar-

ing our taste buds for the main course. The roasted loin of lamb was so tender and perfectly cooked that at my first taste I recall feeling grateful that I had left some room to enjoy my entree. A taste of my dining partner’s sautéed Dover sole proved to be equally delicious. Included with these fabulous gastronomical delights was the never-ending service pampering supplied by ‘Yann’ and those assisting him, constantly replacing silverware in a discreet and quiet manner as the courses progressed. Finally, no meal would be complete without the finishing touches supplied by the sinful delight of dessert. Our table shared the black magic dome of rich chocolate mousse, crisp key lime mango tart, Tahitian vanilla crème brûlée and finally, the warm carrot bomb cake filled with pineapple, walnuts, caramel…topped with creamed cheese icing.

die for.’ The friendly staff is attentive yet unobtrusive and the food mouth-watering fresh and delicious, prepared with the utmost in creativity. This place is beyond deserving of each and every one of the numerous awards it has earned. At the end of the night we had the good fortune to meet the very talented Chef de Cuisine, Khalid Benghallem, who visited our table wearing crisp whites, to ensure that our evening was enjoyed by all. Needless to say, our expectations were exceeded with each of us having a lovely, intimate and memorable experience. Hopefully you will agree. < The Venetian Room Caribe Royale 8101 World Center Drive, Orlando, FL 32821 407-238-8060 www.thevenetianroom.com

TOYS

The wraps are finally off the LaFerrari. The Prancing Horse’s eagerly-anticipated limitedseries special, of which just 499 will be built, made its world debut at the Geneva International Motor Show.

STYLETOME.COM

TOYS

> “We chose to call this model LaFerrari,” declared Ferrari’s President, Luca di Montezemolo, “because it is the maximum expression of what defines our company – excellence. Excellence in terms of technological innovation, performance, visionary styling and the sheer thrill of driving. Aimed at our collectors, this is a truly extraordinary car which encompasses advanced solutions that, in the future, will find their way onto the rest of the range, and it represents the benchmark for the entire automotive industry. LaFerrari is the finest expression of our company’s unique, unparalleled engineering and design know-how, including that acquired in Formula 1.”

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

For Ferrari the development of a limitedseries special like the LaFerrari represents an opportunity to experiment with all the technological solutions that will later filter down onto the production cars. Of particular significance in this context is the introduction of the hybrid system which, making full use of the Scuderia Ferrari’s F1 KERS know-how, has resulted in a solution that exalts Ferrari’s fundamental values – performance and driving thrills. The hybrid technology used, known as HY-KERS, represents the perfect combination of maximum performance and lower emissions. LaFerrari in fact emits just 330 g/km of CO2 but without resorting to electric-only drive which would not fit the mission of this model. The HY-KERS system is, however, designed so that in future applications a car can be driven using exclusively electric power for a few kilometres and, during development testing, a full-electric version of LaFerrari achieved just 220 g/km of C02 emissions on the combined cycle.

0-200 km/h <7 sec

The LaFerrari is equipped with dynamic controls that are integrated for the first time ever on a Ferrari road car with active aerodynamics and the HY-KERS system. Thanks to Ferrari’s proprietary logic which govern all the systems, the car can achieve absolute levels of performance, aerodynamic efficiency and handling without any form of compromise in any area. A very advanced and uncompromising approach was also taken with the interior design which features an HMI inspired by F1 single-seaters. <

their stage presence to their crowd interaction, ID knows how to put on a show. Watching them perform you’d think they were a longtime established band, but as guitarist Wayne Sermon tells us, this is not the case at all. “We’ve only been a band for 4 years and 3 of those years were basically just sleeping on couches and eating bean burritos.” (Sermon) Incredibly, ID’s rise to international fame has only been within the last year, which seems crazy when you can’t go anywhere without hearing their music. As Sermon found out one day, you’re not even safe in the theatres!

ID says their goal has always been to make their music as organic as possible and to build their band one fan at a time. Well I think it’s safe to say they’ve achieved that. ID’s fanbase is huge and it continues to grow. One thing I loved about them during our interview was how down to earth they were. These guys are truly all about their music and don’t try to be something they’re not. Their songs are born out of true, genuine moments. Take the chart topping single, “It’s Time” for example. “‘It’s Time’ started late one night in my kitchen. I was going through a low point in my life and I was stomping my feet and clapping my hands and singing about change as in a new beginning, but going back to who

> How does one start an article about Imagine Dragons? Whatever I say, it won’t be sufficient enough to talk about this band that myself and many others have fallen in love with. ID is currently on tour promoting their debut album, Night Visions and we had the pleasure of sitting down with the band as they passed through ‘The City Beautiful’ for a sold-out concert at House of Blues. ID drummer Daniel Platzman told us the Night Visions tour has been an unbelievable dream come true and one brief look outside the venue was all it took to understand why. Packed lines of concertgoers wrapped around HOB. Once inside, fans of all ages eagerly waited for the show to start and no matter where you stood, the people around you were singing along with every single lyric and word. The energy of the crowd was incredible and matched, if not surpassed, only by that of the band themselves. From

“It was really bizarre hearing my music for the first time in a movie trailer...I’m there and watching the trailers beforehand and our song came on. Then the next trailer comes on and it’s another one of our songs. I swear I just started sinking in my seat...I was like, “Ugh, I hope people like it.” (Sermon)

you are at your core and staying true to your roots. I never wrote it with the intention of it playing on the radio or even being heard by anybody really, but I brought it to the band and that’s when it really came to life and we knew we had something pretty special that we had created together.” (Dan Reynolds) The ID frontman went on to say that their other single, “Radioactive,” was written in a similar way. He called it a song about personal empowerment and overcoming surmounting odds. “At the end of the day we’re a rock band that fuses an organic sound with a synthetic electric sound and “Its Time” and “Radioactive” we felt would be two good singles to show the entire spectrum of the band.” (Reynolds) A big way in which ID combines those worlds is through creative use of instruments. Everything from a quad of toms and claves to a mandolin and other stringed instruments. Perhaps my favorite item is the 6-foot-tall, 300-pound Taiko drum that the band just purchased from Asia. It’s an incredible sight to see on stage and an equally incredible experience to see Reynolds going to town on it. “I grew up listening to a lot of urban radio and hip-hop and so I was very obsessed with percussion. My first instrument was drums so we work a lot of percussion into our music. There are just so many great instruments that are not used here in the states that are used all around the world that have real value to them so we hope to incorporate that more into our show and music.” (Reynolds) The future looks big and bright for ID and as Sermon told us, writing new music is instinctive to the band so don’t be surprised to hear more instant hits from them in the near future. For now though, their focus remains on Night Vision. “We looked at our schedule for the next year and it’s pretty much booked with just playing shows which we can’t really complain about cause that’s what we love to do.We love to play live music for people. It’s our first love and there’s a lot of people who haven’t heard us play live yet and we want to reach those people.” (Sermon) If you would like to be one of those people or would just like more info on Imagine Dragons, be sure to check out www.ImagineDragonsMusic.com for the latest on the band, their music, and their tours. <

BEST FRIENDS

> Ah, the sounds of spring in Florida: the crack of a baseball bat, the chirping of robins, and the constant buzz of mosquitoes. Those little flying villains are not only after your blood, your pet’s blood too. The mosquito is the “Petri Dish of Disease” within the insect world. They have the ability to transmit malaria, West Nile virus, encephalitis, and many other deadly diseases. Unfortunately, they also have the ability to transmit contagions and microbes that may also cause havoc in dogs, cats, horses, and many other family pets. The most prevalent and (very ironic) the most preventable of diseases in dogs and cats is heartworm disease.

Body, Soul & Heart of Healthy Pets By Jake White Executive Vice President & General Manager SPCA of Central Florida Read more at: StyleToMe.com

STYLETOME.COM

The process begins when a mosquito bites an infected animal with heartworms and their “eggs” - microfilariae. The microfilariae develop into larvae inside the mosquito. The mosquito then bites another pet, thus transmitting the burrowing larvae to the skin of the pet, beginning the migration to the heart. Within the heart, the larvae grow to lengths of 12 inches in the right side of the heart and the pulmonary arteries. Once reaching maturity, the worms create more microfilariae, thus continuing the cycle. According to the American Veterinary Association, “Heartworm disease can cause serious health problems and may eventually lead to heart failure and death.” – I know… pretty morbid for our lighthearted article about Body and Soul.

But there is good news. Heartworm disease is 100% preventable. Take your pet(s) to their Veterinarian, have a simple test completed (to insure that the pet is not currently infected), and then obtain a prescription for heartworm prevention. There are several varieties of heartworm prevention, so you should have a brief discussion with your Veterinarian to find the best treatment to parallel you and your pet’s lifestyles. Most prescriptions are easy to feed to your pet and are much more affordable compared to treating for heartworm disease. If you don’t have a Veterinarian, you may contact the SPCA of Central Florida’s low-cost clinics for spay/ neuter surgeries and for annual wellness exams. There are two facilities (Orlando and Sanford) and one mobile unit (Kissimmee and St. Cloud). Tons of information about services and products are available at www. OrlandoPets.org.<

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

STRESS - BY MARK L. HORWITZ > As a lawyer I have observed the stress caused by being under investigation or charged with a crime. The impact of realizing that you may lose your liberty, as well as face public humiliation, can be severe and takes many forms. Loss of sleep, loss of productivity, loss of concentration and even thoughts of suicide are common examples of the impact of stress. In helping clients who must deal with the criminal justice system, I routinely discuss the impact stress may have on daily life and that it must be recognized, acknowledged, and dealt with. Recognizing that stress is a normal consequence of facing criminal charges is a first step. While most people have a certain amount of stress in their lives, few have had to deal with the extreme stress caused by a criminal case. I have observed, both men and women, break down and cry in my of-

fice. They will call complaining of lack of sleep and inability to function. I believe it is important for an attorney to let clients know that what they are experiencing is to be expected, under the circumstances. Help in coping with the stress caused by a criminal case can take many forms. Open communication between attorney and client can relieve stress by answering questions, explaining procedures, and understanding the legal case. Reaching out to a spouse or family member may also be helpful. Many also benefit from talking with clergy or counseling with health care professionals. <

Stephanie Sauer Woods Advocate for the Vulnerable, Estate Planning, Probate, Guardianship and Elder Law Attorney

> Stephanie Sauer Woods practices in the areas of estate planning, probate, guardianship and elder law. Woods knew from age 4 that she would be an attorney when she grew up. In fact, she is a third generation attorney—the first female--as her father and paternal grandfather were both lawyers. Woods is a native Floridian who grew up in the beautiful city of Gulf Breeze in the panhandle of the Sunshine State. Her drive to become an attorney derived from the admiration she had for the way the community viewed her father with respect and gratitude for the services he provided to them. She adopted her father’s view of the law as an elephant; the attorney can be either the elephant trainer who guides it down the legal pathways when legal matters are addressed and planned, or the attorney can follow behind the elephant with a bucket and shovel to clean up the mess left behind.

Stephanie S. Woods, Esquire The Woods Law Firm, P.A. 999 Douglas Avenue, Suite 3323 Altamonte Springs, FL 32714 P: 407-487-1601 F: 407-487-1603 StephanieSWoods@gmail.com

or incapacity, assisting families whose loved ones have died or become incapacitated, or helping families with loved ones who have disabilities, Woods is a compass for her clients to navigate through the unfamiliar terrains of the law. She identifies what her client’s intentions, needs and desires are and then advises them and assists them to establish a plan that is not only sensible, but also takes into consideration the many outcomes that may come up in their situation. Good natured, funny and well-read, Woods quotes Mark Twain’s famous line “You really never know a person until you’ve shared an inheritance with them.” Despite the family squabbles that can erupt from inheritance or guardianship issues, she remains energized for her clients, not jaded. Woods considers herself a Knighted Gator since she obtained her undergraduate in Legal Studies from the University of Central Florida (UCF) and her Juris Doctor, as well as, a Certificate in Estates and Trusts Practices from the University of Florida, Levin College of Law. When she is not running her own practice, she enjoys spending time with her wonderful husband, Jason, and amazing 5-year-old daughter, Amelia, and reading books.<

ucating the children in the community on proper ways to care for their teeth, Dr. Fravel’s office, has recently formed a local chapter of a national association aimed at providing free Orthodontic care to children ages 7-18 who would otherwise not have access to Orthodontic care. result is a loss of brain cells and their billions of connections that leads to death of the cells in the areas of the brain that are responsible for memory thinking, and personality. Currently we know a great deal about the disease’s risk factors and the changes we can see in the brains and how these changes affect brain function. Unfortunately, there still is no cure. Current medical treatments focus on treating the symptoms. Modern drug therapy is directed at boosting the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain cells. Unfortunately we currently do not have medications that can slow or stop the progression of the disease or reverse it.

ment, and promote optimal health. Here is a list of some common supplements being investigated that have great promise by targeting multiple mechanisms in Alzheimer’s development.

Numerous abnormalities exist in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease.

• Omega-3 fish oils - reduce inflammation and improve brain cell membranes

• Senile Plaques - abnormal collections of protein outside the brain cells felt to be a possible cause of the death of brain cells.

• Vitamin D - multiple beneficial effects for brain health.

• Neurofibrillary tangles - intracellular structures that trigger cell destruction and malfunction.

Lower Your Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease By Deborah F. Harding M.D. Harding Anti- Aging Center Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Approximately 5.4 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. Every 68 seconds someone in America develops Alzheimer’s disease. With the aging of baby boomers, an additional 10 million Americans are expected to develop the disease in the upcoming decades. As a result the rate is projected to more than double by 2015, to one in every 33 seconds. It is normally thought of as a disease that primarily affects older individuals. However, an estimated 200,000 people under the age of 65 are also affected. Despite aggressive research the percentage of deaths due to Alzheimer’s disease continues to increase while deaths from heart disease and stroke have fallen. It is the sixth leading cause of death in American and the fifth among those over age 64. Alzheimer’s disease is felt to be a complex disease with multiple interrelated causes, from genetics to lifestyle choices. The end

• Imbalance of neurotransmitter levels such as acetylcholine that prevents proper signaling between brain cells.

• Acetyl –L-Carnitine – mitochondrial health • Ginseng – used in Chinese medicine and may reduce amyloid formation • N-Acetlylcysteine (NAC) - amino acid precursor of the antioxidant glutathione • Lipoic Acid - mitochondrial energy production

• Magnesium - mineral essential for many enzymatic reactions. • B Vitamins - B12, folate and B6 are essential to lower homocysteine levels. • CoQ10 and PQQ - increase cellular energy

• Increased inflammation - researchers believe that increased inflammation from oxidative stress is a major cause of cell death.

• Curcumin - lowers oxidative stress and may prevent amyloid molecules from assembling.

• Elevated Homocysteine levels - an amino acid that when elevated can increase deposits of amyloid and neurofibrillary tangles.

• Resveratrol - antioxidant that may have effects on positive gene expression.

• Defective mitochondria - the organelles inside the brain cells responsible for energy production. There is a large amount of data showing that making healthy dietary and lifestyle choices along with the optimal use of nutrients, hormones, and supplements may dramatically reduce the risk of developing the disease. New research shows that lowering elevated blood sugars may substantially reduce your chances of developing Altzheimer’s. We know your best offense is a strong defense against developing the disease in the first place. The science of nutritional strategies for preventing and slowing the progression of Alzheimer’s disease continues to grow. New blood tests are now available that allow us to measure specific nutrient levels in our blood and make sure we have the optimal levels to prevent disease develop-

• Phosphatidylserine - may reduce the risk of dementia and cognitive dysfunction in the elderly. • Coffee, blueberry, green tea and grape seed extracts – they possess potent antioxidant properties. The research as to the cause, prevention, and reversal of Alzheimer’s disease continues. Currently the best strategy is to focus on a plan of prevention. Proper diet, exercise, and nutritional supplementation with focused blood work are currently our best defense against a disease that has multiple mechanisms and requires a broad defense to target disease prevention. <

Corporate Dental Clinics & Private Practice

By Dr. Carl Bilancione - Comprehensive & Cosmetic Dentistry, PA Orlando Magic Team Dentist

Dr. Carl Bilancione & Staff

> We usually write about a procedure or a technique to educate our readers. This month we would like to discuss the difference between corporate dental clinics and private practice. As private practitioners we feel it is important to address the issues of clinics verses private practitioners as the landscape of healthcare changes in this country. The benefit of seeing a private practitioner is that there should always be consistency in care.Your dental professional will get to know you, know your significant history, and be able to review treatment recommendations based on your specific needs and goals. Your return visits will always be with the same doctor as opposed to corporate owned dental practices that typically staff with 1 or more multiple dentists and hygienists. When special consultations are needed your general dentist acts as the leader of the band to insure that you will not have any surprises and that the specialist is completely informed of your specific needs. The general dentist and the specialists work as a team to help you,our patient, get the treatment you need, and you want. The general dentist acts basically as your surrogate to oversee your treatment. When this team approach is implemented your doctor assumes responsibility for your care and you become a VIP.Your treatment

2828 Casa Aloma Way, Suite 700, Winter Park, FL 32792 P: 407-678-4000 CosmeticDentistryFL@gmail.com www.smilebella.com

Traditional private dental practices are sometimes misrepresented as having being too expensive or having higher fees. The fees are based on the overhead involved in our practices and the quality of the materials used and with the time it takes to deliver the best dental care. Corporate clinics have a different model that they go by. Remember if it seems too good to be true it usually is and a drastic difference in fees should be a red flag. We pride ourselves at delivering the best dental care possible and we all have been selected as “Top Dentists” by our peers. In closing you must feel comfortable and confident that the care you are receiving is the best for you. Our best patients are the ones we educate. I saw this saying in Sicily in a ceramic shop ; there is almost nothing in the world that a man can not make a little worse and sell cheaper. People, who are oriented only on prices, will receive what they will pay for”. Yours for better dentistry, Dr. Carl D. Bilancione<

In closing as a general dentist it is imperative that I work with a team of experts and these professionals are part of my team.

COCKTAIL HOUR

©

Barfly The Age Old After Dinner Quandary Travis Joiner Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> The after dinner cocktail has been a staple in our society for quite some time now. For some a night out on the town with friends and a good meal is required to end in a libation at the bar. Everyone has their preferred choice when it comes to their final cocktail almost to the point of it being a religious act. There are more than a few choices to make when you get up from the table after a big meal and head towards the bar for the ever important, after dinner cocktail. Whether you call it a nightcap or a digestive, before you order I suggest you ask yourself a few questions to help you with the selection. Did you go all out, gastronomically speaking, and are in need of something to settle your stomach? Are you looking for that alternative to dessert in the glass rather than the plate? Or are you looking to find that perfect nightcap for that perfect evening? I have a few things for you to ponder regardless of which poison you decide to pick. For a lot of us who indulge our devilish gastronomy side the after dinner drink will be in the form of a digestive. Usually a beverage made with plenty of herbs and spices. These are generally regarded to settle your stomach. The digestivo, the term used in Italy for centuries, was based on herbal medicines that were consumed in liquid form to help with exactly what you are thinking. Now the history of this is absolutely fascinating but that is for another time. In modern times there are some great Italian liquors to choose from. I recommend an amaro, bitter spirit, such as Fernet Branca or Averna. These can be poured at room temperature and sipped on or like some prefer, chilled as a shot. There are plenty of digestives behind every restaurant bar you end up at so just ask your local bartender. There are other choices all over the world and each country will have their version of digestive aiding liquor. I just lean towards the Italians because, well it is just what I prefer. Look to the Greeks as well, they have a bevy of choices from Metaxa to Grappa. If you were able to get thru dinner without the need of the tummy settling elixirs and prefer the dessert option behind the bar there are some great choices to decide from. Sticking with Italy I would lean

STYLETOME.COM

towards a great Limoncello. If you are fortunate to find one that is made in-house stop your decision-making and order it chilled. There are many nut liquors to choose from as well, some cream based some not. These selections, like Baileys or Frangelico, will definitely take care of that sugary rush you need. It is always a good idea to take a look at the port and sherry list to satisfy the sweet tooth in liquid form. Ruby ports are typically on the sweeter side so I lean towards a nice tawny port or a vintage port more often than not. The combinations are endless and you will no doubt walk away perfectly sated. For those who are looking for that perfect nightcap after a great evening let’s talk whiskey. Now I know we all have our favorites between small batch bourbons or single malt whisky so we will just scratch the surface a little. For those who want to think outside the box a little I recommend looking for exactly that. Compass Box is a brand that is not afraid to play with your mind as far as your idea about whisky. If you want something a little different and a little smoother try the Compass Box Orangerie with a cube of ice or two. It is a blend of Scotch whisky and hand-peeled zest of Navalino oranges, as well as cassia bark and cloves. Now while a great bourbon or whisky is a good choice for a nightcap, the Orangerie is just a great way to get out of your comfort zone and try something new. You can even say it is taking out two birds with one stone as it does have some digestivo tendencies. I hope this helps the decisions one must make when picking out that perfect after dinner drink. Just remember to think about which way you are leaning after a big meal. Do I need to keep the stomach growling monsters at bay? Is it that human need for sweetness that needs to be quelled? Or are you just looking for that perfect sipper to cap the night? Either way there are obviously more options to choose from than you saw here. It is merely a guideline to making the correct choice for what you need to walk away with one final thought,“Now that is how you end a meal.”<
