> Dear Readers,

Chuck’s retirement party at Spencer’s - Hilton Orlando

styletome.com

Over the past seven years, we have worked diligently in perfecting our product and offering top value at the highest level in presenting fabulous and creative photo shoots, excellent vibrant editorials and fresh, entertaining news. Along with your loyal readership, our team, with its endless resources, is a most precious asset in creating a magazine which serves the most discerning, and influential people in the area. Our platform is well conceived, our product pristine and comparing “apples to apples”, provides our readers with exceptional value. As a result Orlando Style is the No. 1 Magazine. We are your ultimate city guide. In these slowly recovering and still fragile economic times, it is critical that advertisers exhibit extreme fiscal caution when spending advertising dollars. They should invest in programs which provide their businesses with the best competitive edge and quality, publication-wise and at the same time serve the demographic communities with a snug fit within business models; this is where real value exists, highlighted by the essential factor of circulation, which measures the number of potential customers being reached. In addition to our strong presence within the residential sector, Orlando Style Magazine distribution to Four Star hotels now exceeds 7500 rooms. In short, our magazine offers the best of both worlds in serving locals and tourists alike.

Coming this fall, our new sister publication “Tampa Style” is perfectly positioned to fulfill the needs of affluent readers and upscale advertisers. Others brag, but polling residents with the majority affirming their ‘love’ for Orlando Style Magazine can easily validate our dominance and reputation within luxury neighborhoods. A frequent quote that we hear from both readers and advertisers when they describe Orlando Style is that it: “...is a magazine that reflects our lifestyle and the one that we really like to read.” To find more to ‘love’, please begin turning the pages and dig inside our summer double issue and enjoy the amazing and fresh photography that accompanies products and services that are available for purchase. Feedback is important to us so whether you are subscribers to our online digi-style version or hard copy readers, we urge you to submit your comments at any time. Enjoy those warm summer evenings and watch for our announcements through our “NEWStoME” emails every Friday pinpointing the next ‘hot’ party in town! < Let’s hear your two cents about things at: info@styletome.com

> With summer in full swing, outdoor activities are prospering among common folk and celebrities alike. Heat and humidity might drive some indoors for the chill of air conditioning, but most embrace the opportunity to make new acquaintances through the mutual respect shared by pushing their bodies into sweaty submission caused by the dual agonies of cardio workout and pumping iron, both necessary to build muscle, endurance and mental well-being. Celebrities, in particular, live a busy lifestyle with grueling hours spent performing on stage or filming. When working out, most often sneak into a gym with a trainer to get their body ready for a specific role, but when given the chance, stars will turn to their favorite outdoor activities. Cameron Diaz, with her blonde hair, blue eyes and California lifestyle seems to be the ultimate surfer girl, but she didn’t begin surfing until adulthood. Without

Selena Gomez

anyone teaching her to surf as a child, she actually learned while prepping for her role in Charlie’s Angels; now she can be spotted riding the waves in a multitude of locations, with Hawaii being a favorite hideaway. Despite breaking her nose surfing, Cameron describes the activity as a healing and spiritual experience…now that’s love! Jake Gyllenhaal is no stranger to a bicycle and was spotted biking everywhere in L.A. and London; Jake certainly epitomizes the exhilaration which biking offers. Having the wind in your hair and the ground ‘whooshing’ by provides an activity of uninterrupted privacy, but when Jake wants company, he can be seen ‘peddling away’ with Tour de France multiple records winner Lance Armstrong; on occasion, the two ride with fellow actor Matthew McConaughey. For those wishing to release some pent-up

excess energy, one can look to Jennifer Love Hewitt, one of many tennis lovers in the world indulging in a little one-onone fuzzy yellow ball smashing competition. Unique to Hewitt, however, is the idea of playing in a bikini and wedges; somewhat unusual we’d say – but Jennifer is just having fun with this ever-popular physical activity. Patrick Dempsey, an actor we know and love from movies and television, chooses his ‘not for the faint of heart’ sport of choice: racecar driving. Patrick co-owns the IndyCar Series team Vision Racing. Patrick reveals his need for speed and the notion that sports are something that anyone can use to take their minds off the issues of our times. Having different interests adds dimension to our character and Patrick fills his life with a myriad of challenges, but make no mistake, partaking in this endeavor requires the participant to be one ‘helluva’ conditioned athlete!

When not performing for thousands of fans, Justin Timberlake might be found taking a few swings at a nearby golf course. Golfing can certainly be most peaceful when playing alone, with just you and the fairways and greens being shared. Scheduled to be auctioned off for development, Justin recently reopened the Miramichi Golf Course, previously Woodstock Hills, in Tennessee, the place where his father first taught him to play the game. Disney star Selena Gomez breathes in a little summer air in-between skateboarding and filming her show: Wizards of Waverly Place. An immensely popular sport amongst teens, skateboarding is enjoyed by all ages, however the sport requires a combination of skill and balance to yield the best results and we’d suggest wearing lots of armor!

Reese Witherspoon

winning actress Reese Witherspoon maintains her great cardio and overall good health by ‘zipping’ along without the need for a complicated regimen or using gym machines. This free conditioning activity can be enjoyed alone or with a partner and it’s a perfect opportunity to explore areas unreachable by automobile. Whether you’re a celebrity or not, summer is the perfect time to try a new sport or rediscover an old one. There is such a variety of activities to partake in that will keep you healthy, social and loving life, so go out and get some sunlight and get your body moving; challenge yourself to a workout of your choice, then do it again and again until it becomes an addiction…<

Blue-Phoria in Orlando By: Joe Chabus Photos By: Ken Howard, David Hawe & Barbe Rotach Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Despite its popularity, Blue Man Group at Universal Orlando Resort retains a certain mystery here in Central Florida, which is part of its appeal. It’s almost impossible to describe the world-famous show in a few sentences. Blue Man Group is one of the only destinations in Orlando that audiences will see for the first time, or again and again, without really knowing what to expect. Here’s a hint: think of it as a rock concert, comedy, and kindergarten class all in one. As soon as you enter the Sharp Aquos Theatre at Universal CityWalk, which is decked out in a tangle of tubes, propulsive tribal music heightens the ominous tone. Soon thunderous drumming and paint volcanoes on stage transport you into the blissful world of the Blue Man. The whole show is about connecting with the audience in new and fresh ways, even though the Blue Man does not speak. The Blue Man is the part of us that wants to

play, question authority, experience joy and connect with the world on a very basic level, similar to the actions of a 3-year old child. “The Blue Man is part innocent, hero, scientist, shaman, group member and trickster,” explains Blue Man Group Co-Founder Matt Goldman. “He doesn’t speak, but he communicates with vaudevillian slapstick humor. He drums and catches gumballs in his mouth that are filled with paint, which he spits onto a canvas to make art. It’s interactive, with music, lights, and lots of colorful liquids that get sprayed on the stage and into the audience. The live band adds to the theatre’s energy.” The interactive nature of the show – the Blue Man even walks into the audience – is the character’s way of connecting to the audience, ensuring that everyone has a great time. For example, Blue Man Group offers a satirical clinic on how to be a rock star. It includes all the basics, from how to do the

classic head bob to the finer points of the one-armed fist-pump. Besides this tutorial on rocking out, there’s also a video of a dummy’s guide to the history of animation, including a three-dimensional man who comes to life. “One of the tenets of Blue Man Group is to perform work that we’ve never seen before, to put entertainment on stage that is unique,” Goldman says. “I think Blue Man has taught us not to be afraid to be creative and twist things around a little bit. It’s fun to find creativity in these weird places, whether its catching marshmallows and gumballs, or making music out of plumbing pipes, or making music out of breakfast cereal, as we do in each show.” One Blue Man tosses what seem to be balls from a bubble-gum machine to a second Blue Man, who catches them in his mouth, chews them, then spits them out, in vivid color, onto a blank canvas. Or else they pour paint onto the head of a drum, then beat the drum madly, which produces the effect of an erupting volcano. The Blue Men select someone from the audience, dress them in a white jump suit and helmet and lead him behind the stage. There the brave person is hung up by his feet, covered with coats of wet blue paint, and repeatedly swung up against yet another canvas, the collisions resulting in large blue blobs and splotches. The volunteer eventually emerges, smiling triumphantly while escaping an enormous mold of orange Jell-O. “Some people think that when we get bald and blue that we’re just hiding behind a mask,” says Orlando Blue Man Anthony Parrulli. “But, we think it’s the opposite. When you get blue, you’re left with just the purest, most vulnerable humanity. All three Blue Men look the same. There are no biases or prejudices. The Blue Man does not have an ego. He’s not self-conscious. He just is.We’re having a lot of fun portraying this charac-

ter, and the audience gets it. About halfway through the show, the audience starts to wonder if they, too, are Blue Men.” Blue Men are consummate collaborators. They work together to solve problems throughout the show, and one example is how they play the Drumbone, an instrument made of PVC pipes. One Blue Man has a large PVC tube, and the second Blue Man has two sticks. Individually, they don’t have a musical instrument. But when the Blue Man with the sticks starts drumming on the large tube, they have a little tune. But it’s only when the third Blue Man comes with another tube that connects to the first tube that they really rock. It’s a child-like metaphor for the magic of collaboration. Blue Man Group is a hit for people of all ages. Adults understand the popular culture humor. Teenagers love the pulsating music. And what pre-teen doesn’t want to stuff his face with marshmallows? The show’s grand finale is mesmerizing: while music is pulsating and strobe lights dancing, clusters of vinyl tubes begin twirling right over the audience’s heads. As the frenzy builds, the Blue Men run out into the audience and begin to launch rivers of rolled paper that turn into torrents. Before you know it, it’s sensory overload as you’re completely buried in recycled paper. You’ve got to appreciate entertainment that makes you escape the stresses of today’s world and makes you feel like a kid again. If you do, you’ll likely find Blue Man Group exhilarating. Blue Man Group is a totally outrageous experience. Blue Man Group performs nightly in Orlando at the custom-built state-of-the-art 1,000- seat Sharp Aquos Theatre at Universal CityWalk. > Two men, a woman and an impatient puppy sat in a stalled elevator. It’s not the start of a joke; it’s the start of a career. Thom Filicia found himself cracking jokes to calm the woman’s nerves while the elevator mechanic tried to get it going again. The other man happened to be a talent scout (these things only happen in New York, right?) and when the elevator doors opened and cold air rushed in, he asked what Thom did for a living. Clearly, he must be some sort of entertainer with that quick wit and comedic timing. No, Thom said, “I’m an interior designer.”

The Decorating

Wingman

Thom Filicia By: Holly V. Kapherr Read more at: StyleToMe.com

A few weeks later, Thom found himself signing a deal to do a show unlike any other that had been aired, “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.” The show debuted on the Bravo TV network in the fall of 2003 and featured the “Fab Five,” Thom Filicia as the Design Doctor, among five openly-gay men like cuisinier Ted Allen and fashionisto Carson Kressley, setting out to make the heterosexual work just a little more fabulous. “We didn’t have a lot of secrets on the show. Just showing people five gay men on primetime was enough coming out for Bravo at that time,” says Thom. “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” was a silly show with a noble pursuit. “It’s really amazing what we accomplished. We brought gayness to primetime and people loved it!” The show brought a lifestyle that was considered taboo in the media to the forefront, and Thom was right in the middle of it. “It was really powerful, what we did. People had fun watching us. Being gay and in the

styletome.com

public eye was no longer a curse—it was a blessing,” he says. Thom’s work on “Queer Eye” ended in October of 2007, but the show propelled him to interior design stardom and made his moniker a brand in itself. Since the show, Thom has worked on several books, including Thom Filicia Style: Inspired Ideas for Creating Rooms You’ll Love, published in 2008, where he describes himself as the “decorating wingman” saying, “I think a fabulously styled place is achievable by everyone.” Thom’s current brand work has him partnered with Robb & Stucky Furnishings, who now carries a line of furniture designed by Thom for the modern classic home. “The collection conveys an appreciation for the classics while also bringing them into the modern time,” says Thom. “I’m inspired by my customers. They tell me what they want, they tell the market what they want, and I try to make it happen for them.” The collection is available at the Robb & Stucky store in Altamonte Springs. Thom’s on his way back to the small screen, though, so look for him on the Style network’s new show “Tacky House” set to air this fall. Thom and his team scour the United States in search of America’s tackiest house and face the challenge head on with a new design and modern touches. Thom’s classic taste in interior design strives for one thing: to make your space beautiful. “What makes a room beautiful, that makes it a room someone would love, is if it reflects the people who live in it,” says Thom. “Model homes are well-thought-out. They appeal to a wide audience, but I wouldn’t consider them ‘beautiful’,” he says. “For a room to be truly special, I want to see it represent its inhabitants: where they’ve been, what they love, who they cherish. Those things are what make a room exceptional.” <

2010 World’s Largest Girlfriends Getaway Weekend By: Rebecca Coe Photos By: Rebecca Coe & Loews Hotels Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> The World’s Largest Girlfriends Getaway Weekend was held at the stunning Loews Miami Beach Hotel located on Collins Avenue, directly on the beach in the Art Deco District of South Beach. The hotel recently completed a head-to-toe $50 million dollar renovation, which boosts a feeling of South Beach casual & cool elegance. The first annual Girlfriends Getaway Weekend drew in women from all over the world, who gathered together to reconnect and spend a weekend full of food, fashion, and fun in one of the top travel destinations in the world, South Beach Miami, Florida. Guests arrived at Loews Miami Beach Hotel and were greeted by the friendly faces of the hotel staff, lush palm trees, and a tropical environment. Each girlfriend received a program pamphlet that outlined the activities for the weekend and a large white, reusable, swag bag, filled with coupons for retail boutiques that were exhibited at the event, a free OPI Hong Kong Collection nail polish in either a “Jade is the New Black” green color or a “Suzi Says Feng Shui” blue color, Lindsay Phillips flip-flop snaps, and a copy of Marianna Olszewski’s book, “Live It, Love It, Earn It.”

The Rockin’ and Rollin’ Happy Hour kicked off the weekend with Voli vodka cocktails, Champagne, and delicious sushi. Girlfriends got the chance to unwind from their travels and meet the “Girlfriends Weekend Concierge Duo,” David and Jorge, who were there to assist with recommendations to make the weekend an event to remember. After Happy Hour, girlfriends could head to the Hemisphere Lounge for a night in or they could go to the Cameo Night Club for a night out on the town. At the Hemisphere Lounge, girlfriends enjoyed customized “GG” mojitos in three unique flavors: Watermelon, Raspberry and Miami. Relaxed in the reserved ‘Girlfriends Getaway Weekend section’ of the Hemisphere, girlfriends enjoyed listening to live jazz music with the Michelle Manzo Band. At Cameo, girlfriends experienced authentic South Beach nightlife and danced the night away with a complimentary drink and no cover. The fantastic weekend had girlfriends waking up bright and early to put on their dancing shoes. Girlfriends headed to the Poinciana Ballroom for a group salsa lesson by one of Miami’s best – Salsa Mia. The dance lesson taught women how to shake, sway, and shimmy away calories on the dance floor. It was also a great way to work up an

appetite, which is exactly what led to the next event…a complementary breakfast buffet at Preston’s Brasserie. Once the ladies were finished with breakfast, it was time to head down to the pool for “Shopping, Tanning & Beautifying – All at the Same Time!” Girlfriends could grab a lounge chair in the reserved Girlfriends Getaway section and catch some rays or browse the pop-up cabana retail shops for the latest fashion items and accessories. Some of the designer retailers were: INTERMIX, Lindsay Phillips, Lather, Calypso St. Barths, Pur Minerals, Hayley Style and Bloqwear. Complimentary “quickie” manipedi’s by Lace Nail Lab and hairstyling tips and blowouts by BaBliss were also available. There was something for everyone to experience and enjoy. In the afternoon, girlfriends headed to the Americana Lawn to experience a sensory food session with award winning celebrity chef Michelle Bernstein and her “girlfriend” of several years and well-known pastry chef Hedy Goldsmith. Chef Michelle Bernstein owns three restaurants in South Florida: Sra. Martinez, Michy’s and MB Michelle Bernstein at The Omphoy Ocean Resort. Chef Hedy Goldsmith is the executive pastry chef at

Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, located in the Miami Design District. The chefs shared springtime cuisine recipes and then gave samples of the fresh and divinely delicious dishes: fresh sautéed snapper with avocados and greens, fava been succotash, corn sauce, cornmeal zeppole, sweet con pot de crème, and fresh blackberry jam. Following the delightful food tasting session, it was time to head back over to the pool deck and meet Sex and The City 2, co-costume designer, Danny Santiago, to learn about fashion trends for the summer and how to make one outfit work all-day, whether you’re going to work, spending a day with girlfriends, or heading out to a hot date. He used three models to showcase the hottest outfits and used scarves, belts, jewelry, handbags and jackets to accentuate each look. Dinner for the evening was in the Miami Design District, where girlfriends could choose between Chef Michelle Bernstein’s spicy, Spanish-influenced restaurant Sra. Martinez, or Chef Hedy Goldsmith’s Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink; Loews provided a complimentary shuttle service. After dinner, some ladies explored the Design District, perused art galleries, and then caught

the Loews shuttle back to the hotel, where they could enjoy a drink at the Hemisphere Lounge, while other girlfriends visited the local hotspot, Club Mansion. The weekend culminated with a morning yoga lesson on the beach with Green Monkey Yoga and a beautiful breakfast brunch with New York Times Best-Selling author and businesswomen, Marianna Olszewski. Marianna shared her inspirational rags-toriches life story and urged women to follow their dreams, believe in themselves, and to take charge of their financial situation. The World’s Largest Girlfriends Getaway Weekend at Loews Miami Beach Hotel was an experience not to be forgotten. It was a perfect way to bring together women of all ages and lifestyles in one place, where they could unite with girlfriends, meet new friends, enjoy South Beach’s tropical paradise, and get treated to a lavish, fabulous once-in-a-lifetime experience. If you missed the 2010 World’s Largest Girlfriends Getaway Weekend, don’t worry! Save the date for next year’s event scheduled to take place at Loews Miami Beach Hotel. > Though summer temperatures are most often associated with water sports and flip flops, anyone new to Central Florida will quickly see that the heat can be more than just a nuisance. Whether you jog daily or are a visitor traversing the theme parks, preventing heat-related problems is necessary with temperatures creeping towards 100 degrees.

Summer

Heat

By: Alicia Satchfield Read more at: StyleToMe.com

What exactly are the effects of too much heat? Heat rash is an irritating result of sweat glands getting blocked from too much humidity.Treat this with a cold shower. Heat fatigue is characterized by headaches, and irritability. If you reach heat fatigue, relax inside for a while with cool liquids. Heat exhaustion is a more serious reaction to extreme temperatures, with a loss of body fluids and decreased blood flow to the brain and organs. Symptoms include clammy skin, weakness, and dizziness. Get inside immediately, with your feet elevated and clothes loosened or removed. Drink plenty of cool water and relax. The most dangerous of heat disorders is heat stroke, a complete breakdown of the body’s cooling system. Symptoms include

severe headache, chills, mental confusion, and unconsciousness. If heat stroke is reached, call for medical help immediately, get the person inside, and rub a cold sponge over their skin or fan them until help arrives. While health risks associated with heat can be serious, much fun is to be had in the warm weather of central Florida. Just follow a few basic precautions: Pay attention to weather reports and don’t be afraid to change your schedule around. When outside for long periods of time, take frequent breaks in a cool area. Do not leave pets or children inside a car, even with open windows. Drink plenty of fluids and keep cool with fans and showers. Remember: by staying hydrated and wearing protective hats and clothing, you can transform a miserable day in the heat into a sensational day in the sun. Have a safe and fun summer! <

>> Ask Dr. Newman

Q:

I am considering having a breast augmentation. I heard that I have to have them exchanged after a period of time. Is this true?

A:

E-mail your questions or concerns to Charles E. Newman, Jr. M.D. of Newman Plastic Surgery Newman@NewmanPlasticSurgery.com

Many women choose to have a breast augmentation for a variety of reasons from enhancing their figures to restoring volume after weight loss or pregnancy. In recent years it has surpassed liposuction as the number one cosmetic surgical procedure performed. While breast implants do not last forever, they do not have to be exchanged at any pre-set interval. If the implants are intact and the breasts are stable in appearance, many women have kept their implants for well over twenty years. When a saline implant ruptures or leaks, the asymmetry between the two breasts becomes readily apparent. A silicone implant rupture, however, may

styletome.com

be initially silent and not known until a mammogram or MRI is performed. A thorough clinical exam can also confirm the leak. A breast that was once soft that has become firm and possibly tender to the touch are clues that there may be an implant related problem. I recommend that all patients with breast implants maintain a relationship with their plastic surgeon with at least an annual appointment to assess the integrity of the implant and to discuss whether the result can be improved upon.

Q:

How should my skin care regimen change for the summer while still maintaining my active lifestyle?

A: Living in Florida affords us the luxury of outdoor activities yearround. Summer lends itself to more

time spent going to the pool, beach and parks which can put us at risk for sun damage which can lead to premature aging and skin cancer. I recommend a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen for all my patients. Many people do not realize that a “healthy tan” (or any tan) is the body’s response to sun damage. Some people burn more easily than others while some tan or experience a combination of the two. These are the ways that the body responds to sun damage. Many skin care lines have sunscreens that contain antioxidants and moisturizers that treat the skin as they protect it from damage. Tinted powder sunscreens are very popular in our office due to the convenience of having all day one-step waterproof coverage. I believe that quality skin care is an investment in yourself. Keeping it in good condition will enhance results achieved by fillers, Botox and even surgery.

Go Topless: Summer Thrills Maserati GranCabrio Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> The introduction of the GranCabrio – the Trident’s third prong – completes Maserati’s product line-up that now consists of three different families of models: Quattroporte, GranTurismo and GranCabrio. The GranCabrio represents the very essence of Maserati in terms of opentop cars. It’s a Maserati in the purest sense of the word: from the unmistakable style by Pininfarina to the spacious interior, from the craftsmanship of each detail to the driving pleasure and performance. The Maserati GranCabrio enriches all five senses in a shared open-air experience, without sacrificing comfort and performance. A dream car designed and built for men and women who love to live life in an understated – though sophisticated - manner. Like all of the Maserati open-top convertibles: this is a special car aimed at refined connoisseurs. The GranCabrio is continuing the Maserati tradition in open-top fine automobiles, beginning with the 1950 A6G Frua Spyder, and continuing through a long list of significant and thrilling open air models. However, in adding to this tradition, the GranCabrio opens a new chapter, because never before have four-seater top-down models ever been produced at the Viale Ciro Menotti Maserati factory in Modena. Four proper seats are provided, so that the rear passengers are not merely supporting actors, but co-stars of the journey. The GranCabrio is powered by a 4.7 liter V8, 323 kW engine and is the convertible with the longest wheelbase on the market. The GranCabrio’s roof is strictly canvas-made, emphasizing the link with the Maserati tradition.<

Orlando Now

Full Coverage Often

Means Absolutely

Minimum Coverage Orlando Now/Business News By: Mark NeJame Contributor: Jason Recksiedler Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> You have been in an automobile accident, your car is damaged and cannot be driven, your body is sore and you have a headache that just won’t stop. What makes matters worse is the person that hit the rear of your car has no insurance or drives away from the scene before you can get his license plate number and insurance information. You will need to get a rent-acar, you will need to get your car fixed, you will need to see a doctor; and, although you don’t know it yet, you have a damaged disc in your neck that will never fully heal. So you call a Personal Injury Lawyer and he or she asks you, “what insurance coverage do you have?” You confidently answer, “I have full coverage.” What does “full coverage” mean? In pure legal terms, it means absolutely nothing. Insurance agents often use the term to mean that you are purchasing the absolute minimum insurance required by law to operate a vehicle on Florida roadways. This means you must carry a Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Policy of insurance, which pays up to $10,000.00 in medical benefits or lost wag-

styletome.com

es only. PIP does not pay for car rental, car repair, or for permanent injuries. In short, “full coverage”, often means the absolute bare minimum coverage. So what coverage is necessary to help you in our “uninsured” and “hit and run” scenarios and what coverage should you purchase to protect yourself, your family, and your future? First, you should pay for and make certain you have Comprehensive and Collision coverage. This will make certain that your insurance company pays for your property damage to be fixed, when someone else is at fault that either has insufficient insurance coverage to pay for the damage or no insurance at all. (You can bet that there are lots of motorists operating vehicles without insurance in these challenging economic times). Second, you need to purchase rental insurance, in order to make sure that you can get a rental car in the event that it takes days or even weeks to repair your vehicle. Third, you need to purchase Uninsured/Underinsured motorist protection, which pays for things like pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life or loss of

earning capacity, in the event that you suffer a permanent injury. Florida does not require drivers to carry what is known as Bodily Injury Insurance. This simply means that there is no law forcing your fellow motorist to carry insurance that would benefit you in the event they cause an accident where you are injured. This is why you should make certain your coverage includes the following: Personal Injury Protection (PIP), Bodily Injury (BI), Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage (UM), Comprehensive and Collision, and Rental Coverage. That way, if the above scenario happens, you will be able to protect yourself and not rely on someone else to do the right thing. If you do this, you will have peace of mind to know that you have meaningful coverage.<

Savor & Save

During Orlando Magical Dining Month By: Gary C. Sain President and CEO, Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc. Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Talk about a dining revolution; thanks to our thriving tourism industry, Orlando has emerged as a leader in the culinary world within just one short decade. One of the many cascading effects of Central Florida’s robust travel and tourism industry has been an abundance of dining options available for both regional residents and global visitors. Though it took Orlando three decades to develop the culinary depth the destination now displays, it is timely and duly noted. On any given evening, guests may now choose from sophisticated resort kitchens, savory independent bistros or fine dining options from both familiar and exclusive brands. The connection between tourism and dining has long been a mutually beneficial relationship in Orlando. Along with the opening of theme parks, attractions and resort ho-

Gary Sain

tels, a skilled workforce of chefs and kitchen support staff was employed to run the numerous on- and off-site restaurants that were built to cater to leisure and business travelers. Over time, visitation increased dramatically to the destination and a diverse influx of additional residents — from across the United States as well as globally — began to call Central Florida home. More restaurants, from corporate chains to local culinary establishments, opened to meet this demand. International eateries also soared during this period, serving cuisine from just about anywhere on the planet. The resulting Orlando dining infrastructure is impressive by any standard. With Orlando-based Darden Restaurants’ portfolio now including two fine-dining concepts, as well as Ruth’s Hospitality Group also calling the region home, the culinary evidence is stacking up. Add to the menu the literally thousands of unique local bistros, resort restaurants and the international cuisine that is available across the destination, and Orlando is a true culinary hot spot. One of the best opportunities for visitors (and locals) to sample the depth and diversity of the destination’s culinary offerings is during Orlando Magical Dining Month. A

culinary celebration presented by the Orlando/Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Orlando Magical Dining Month features local restaurants offering threecourse, prix-fixe dinners at an exceptional value of $30. Enjoy an appetizer, entrée, and dessert at one of our celebrity-chef-studded eateries or award-winning restaurants patronized by local foodies. In 2009, the 75 restaurants that participated in the annual promotion donated $1 for each Magical Dining meal purchased, raising nearly $16,000 for the Arnold Palmer Medical Center Foundation. This year, $1 from every dinner served will benefit the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Central Florida. So why not try a different restaurant every week? Or every day? With an exciting value like this, now is the time to satisfy your inner epicurean, and contribute to a great local charity. Visit orlandomagicaldining.com today to learn more about Orlando’s newest haute cuisine, mouth-watering menus and to browse a growing list of participating restaurants for 2010. City News

> Well, it doesn’t take a meteorologist to tell us that summertime is happening in a huge way in Orlando. May and June were fantastic times for just about everything: charities, shows, music and more! Raise your Red Bull and Vodka and make a toast to every fabulous woman that strapped on a pair of high heels to take on Orlando. To mark the Sex and the City 2 premiere, your favorite magazine teamed up with Crave for an awesome party celebrating Sex and the City style. For obvious reasons, I had to stop by Tuni in Winter Park before the party to find a Carrie-inspired look. Lots of fun people checked out this stylish event at Crave, enjoying entertainment and martini specials all night long.

“RUNWAY FOR A CURE” event with the GUCCI BOYS and all of their favorite things. Congratulations to Annel Ortega who won $6,000 in prizes & services, and to the GUCCI BOYS who helped raise over $8,000 for the HOPE AND HELP CENTER!

This month, charity and golf convened at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club for WineQuest. For 14 years, WineQuest has combined wine, wine education and entertainment to benefit children and adults who are developmentally disabled. Last year, more than 600 food and wine lovers attended WineQuest, raising more than $220,000. This year’s event paired teams of golfers with Caddy Concierges – as well as complimentary food and beverages. WineQuest holds great events every year, and this sold out event was no different. Downtown Orlando is happening on Thursday nights, when you should check out the Rok Room. One of Downtown Orlando’s newest clubs, Thursday nights after 10pm, Rok Room features one of our favorite hosts, Chris Kirkpatrick, as well as VIP bottle service inside a cool, contemporary ultra lounge. Très chic! Orlando got a new landmark this month, when the Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened up on the 18th. The spectacular grand opening ceremony was a super celebrity event that included many of stars from the Harry Potter films. And one of those many stars was everyone’s favorite, Daniel Radcliffe! That’s right, Harry Potter himself was there! Of

course, even if you don’t live in Orlando, you could have caught the opening on NBC’s Today Show, which broadcast the grand opening live. And while it may have been a few years since the last Potter book was published, no one has forgotten about Harry – and lines for one of the park’s new rides, Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, proved it. If you were staying around the Universal parks area for another week, you could have seen Everclear on the 24th, which played Velvet Sessions at the Hard Rock Hotel. Velvet Sessions is a monthly event at the Hard Rock Hotel, and I love it because they always have a great band – and the environment is intimate and fun. Their cocktails are great too. I have to talk about one more thing: Chicago! From June 15th to the 20th, Bob Carr brought Chicago to Orlando with Broadway Across America’s production of Chicago. This has got to be one of my favorite musicals ever! Broadway Across America has really brought some great shows to the area. Chicago was a knockout. And later this year that same organization is bringing the Broadway version of the classic Mel Brooks film Young Frankenstein. I can’t wait! Between May and June there were a lot of not to be missed events. If you didn’t make it out to at least one of these you need to take a serious look at your social calendar. You need to make time for business AND pleasure – unless you’re lucky enough to work for Orlando Style, in which case, you get the best of both! Next month it gets even better! See you then! < Know of a not-to-be-missed event? Do Tell!

Get to Know M.I.A. By: Alicia Satchfield Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, publicly known as M.I.A., is a unique and talented artist on the rise. Besides singing and song writing, M.I.A. is also a record producer, filmmaker, fashion designer and visual artist. Her new album, /\/\ /\ Y /\ (MAYA) will be her third, introducing more and more fans to her sound. Born in London, her family moved back to their native Sri Lanka when Maya was only an infant. Her father was a political activist in Sri Lanka, resulting in Maya, her mother, and her siblings moving to India for safety and eventually back to London as refugees. Her name M.I.A. stands for Missing in Action, a military

term; her music exposes political themes relevant to her less than stable childhood. You’ll recognize M.I.A.’s one-of-a-kind sound when you hear the immensely popular song “Paper Planes” from her second album Kala, named after her mother. Her first album Arular, after her father, holds the dance-hall hits “Sunshowers” and “Galang.” With a mixture of rap, techno, electronic, tribal, and hip-hop sounds, M.I.A. is in a category of her own. She was named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2009. One of the singles from her new album is entitled “Born Free,” a song that exposes ideas

born of her time as a refugee, concerned with her family’s safety. The song claims, “With a nose to the ground I found my sound.” M.I.A.’s music emphasizes the value of independence and following your own path. Her fashion emphasizes her independence as well, with a focus on bold colors and designs. M.I.A. does not consider herself solely a musician. She attended London’s Central Saint Art School, where she studied fine art and film. Though she has performed all over the world, one of M.I.A.’s most notorious moments was when she sang “Paper Planes” at the 2009 Grammy awards the day her first child was due. In an interview before the show, Maya revealed she was taking the situation one step at a time. If she felt good enough to perform, she would, and she did. Her son was born only a few days later. When the interviewer asked what she would name her child, M.I.A. said she didn’t yet know whether it was a boy or a girl, and that she “needs to meet the baby first” to fully invest in a name, demonstrating her humility. M.I.A. is in tune with the world experience, having lived on three different continents. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, M.I.A. compared her most famous song, “Paper Planes,” to a thesis in three minutes. The song represents the hardships many foreigners have of getting American visas, or more importantly, American acceptance. Completely against the idea of putting oneself in a box, she explores all mediums and accepts all kinds of company. A group of English children even accompanied her with “Paper Planes,” singing the chorus. Though not extremely well known yet in the states, M.I.A.’s multi-layered personality is sure to take her far. She is a painter, graphic designer, and founder of N.E.E.T. recordings. When asked what her best story ever was in a video interview, M.I.A. animatedly told of a night when her and a friend were almost trapped by a man in a warehouse. Though admitting it was the most frightening time of her life, she also said, “I burst out laughing because it was such a cliché serial killer movielooking room.” Seeing her interviews and hearing her music demonstrate what a unique and gifted woman M.I.A. is. Rocking the stage at the Grammy’s nine months pregnant certainly speak volumes about her character. M.I.A.’s newest album, /\/\ /\ Y /\, will be released July 13.<

Glam It Up: Moms Like to Look Good Too! By: Carolyn Brundage Photo By: Carlos Amoedo Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> I have a confession to make: I used to spend hours making sure every last hair was in place, expertly applying – and experimenting with – my makeup and ripping through my closet trying on outfit after outfit. Those were the days

That all changed with the birth of my first son. Suddenly, hours once spent primping and preening were devoted to nurturing and nourishing. And I’m not complaining. It’s a position women throughout time have not only found themselves in, but also embraced, placing the health and wellness of their families first.

else for yourself, consider getting an affordable hair gloss every four to six weeks, to impart shine and adjust hair tone, paired with a requisite trim.

Step three: Nail the look

For great skin, drink “8 x 8,” eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily consume a diet chock full of vegetables and fruits and commit to a daily four-part skin care routine. Know what matters event more than which skin care line you select? How well you stick to at least a bare bones skin care program, think cleanser, moisturizer, SPF by day and eye cream. Step Two: 5 in Five

The key of course is to get gorgeous fast, by finding ways to fit at least a portion of the pampering we once swore by into a schedule that may allow little more than 15 minutes of “me time.” The good news is, it can be done (without applying mascara while driving the carpool). Here’s how…

From makeup to clothes, looking and feeling stylish isn’t about variety. All you really need are a few go-to outfits that look incredible no matter the occasion. I’m here to tell you, it takes just as much time to don a simple sundress as it does to hide your personal style in sweats and tees.

Step One: Good Hair, Great Skin

When it comes to makeup, the same rules apply; you don’t have to be a makeup artist to have a staple look that you can achieve in five minutes or less. In a time crunch, I turn to the five products that I can apply flawlessly every time: powder, red lipstick and

Some old-fashioned advice rings eternally true and when it comes to looking fabulous on the fly, good hair and great skin are tools one must have to start. If you do nothing

liner, plus mascara and Julie Hewitt’s Shimmy – a makeup multitasker that I swipe onto my lids in literally seconds.

Nothing says, “I’m a frazzled Mom” like chipped polish and scraggly cuticles. Dollar for dollar, a regular manicure is one of the most affordable ways to get a dose of grooming with a pinch of pampering. If you can’t get a weekly manicure, polish nails in a color that will keep them looking fresh and healthy, and hardly show a chip. In-between manicures, I keep my look “polished” with a couple of quick coats of Orly’s Bare Rose, a barely there pink that doesn’t divulge dents and dings. And while I’d never apply polish, or any other cosmetic, while steering an automobile, I have been known to brush on a coat of Bare Rose just before pulling out of the garage to take my sons to school, leaving it to dry while I drive. Because these days, every second counts.<

Arthur’s Soul Adventure Book Author: Brian Chambers Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Brian Chambers’ new novel about a dream he had of his father and a message that was never delivered is a beautifully scripted story of faith that warms the heart in its sincerity and brings renewed hope for a better world. Arthur’s Soul Adventure (OBooks) was written in order to complete the work the author’s father had begun but was never able to finish. Brian Chambers had a dream one day but it was no ordinary dream. He saw his dead father as a young boy standing on the railroad tracks in Boston during the Great Depression, telling him how he almost died

on the tracks one day and how, during his near-death experience, he briefly visited heaven and was given an important message to bring back. Unfortunately, his father never shared this entrusted message with anyone throughout his life, but as he stood there in the dream, holding out a darkcovered book, Chambers knew it was the book he had to write for his father. Filled with the perfect blend of humor and bittersweet experiences, it is guaranteed to touch hearts and souls everywhere. This uplifting story is about Arthur, an inner-city boy who dies temporar-

ily after a severe head injury, and the incredible journey he takes through heaven alongside his Guardian Angel, George. When he returns, he develops a close friendship with a lovely, yet reclusive, elderly woman who believes in him and who experiences a deep, personal transformation after she hears his message of hope. Arthur himself learns many valuable lessons, one being to keep an open mind and not listen to those who would have us believe there is only one right way ‘home’ – understanding that God delights in all the many paths we take in order to get there.<

Chef Brandon Benack Director of Culinary Operations Norman’s at The Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes newest addition

By: Cathleen K. Bode Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Brandon Benack’s rich food memories as a child helped guide him on the path to become a chef. He recalls rolling meatballs and making sauce with his grandma for elaborate Sunday dinners with family, harvesting grapes with his grandfather, and cranking an old sausage maker to churn out fresh Italian sausage. Drawn in by the food experiences of his youth, Benack eventually enrolled in his school’s culinary program, and after two years of studies, he headed to Hilton Head Island and Daufuskie Island, SC to begin his professional cooking career. In 1999, Benack joined Emeril’s Delmonico, Emeril Lagasse’s famous Creole restaurant in New Orleans. In 2002, he became sous chef at Delmonico, before pursuing the post of executive chef at two ethnic restaurants in the city. His next stop would be the most impressionable on his culinary palate, as he embarked on a three-year expedition to Antigua with Chef Andrew Knoll. Working for billionaire Allen Stanford, the two oversaw

special events and tastings at his resorts on the island, and cooked in Antigua’s luxury dining outposts, including The Pavilion. Benack returned to the United States in December of 2007 as executive sous chef at Emeril’s Miami Beach, and in November 2008, he was promoted to Chef de Cuisine. In April 2010, Benack headed north to legendary Chef Norman Van Aken’s famous fine dining establishment, Norman’s at The Ritz-Carlton Grande Lakes where he serves as Director of Culinary Operations and is directed by Chef Norman Van Aken in all matters relating to the execution of the cuisine. Known for his shared passion of the cultural diversity and fusion flavors of South Florida, Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as his commitment to utilizing fresh, local ingredients and making regionally inspired culinary creations, Benack was a natural addition to the Norman’s team. Today, Benack is thrilled to be part of Norman’s as he strives to stay true to Chef Van Aken’s famous “New World Cuisine” as the culinary centerpiece which celebrates Latin, Caribbean and Asian flavors with traditional European techniques. normans.com <

>> SEA BASS CEVICHE Norman Van Aken, © 2010

Yields: Serves 4 Appetizers 12 ounces skinless sea bass fillets, thinly sliced and then cut into ¾ inch bite-size squares. Keep very cold. For the Marinade: ½ Cup freshly squeezed limejuice 1 Cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice 1 Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil ½ of a red onion, peeled and thinly sliced 2 Tablespoons coarsely chopped cilantro leaves 1 jalapeño, minced

Kosher salt, to taste Combine the ingredients above, (not the fish) in a non-reactive bowl and place a larger bowl filled with ice beneath it. A few minutes before serving place the cut Sea Bass in the marinade (about 10 minutes is what I recommend for sushi quality fish). Stir once or twice to distribute the marinade. Set up small chilled bowls and spoon the liquid of the ceviche and the fish into them.

Now assemble the salad: 1 Cup jicama, peeled and sliced into matchstick size pieces 1 ripe avocado, peeled, pitted and diced into ¼ -inch pieces 2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 2 Tablespoons red onion, diced small 2 Tablespoons chopped cilantro leaves ¼ teaspoon ground cumin Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste Assemble all of the above ingredients in a chilled bowl. Set aside. Serve the salad alongside the ceviche.

Visitors are captivated with Celebration’s natural landscape, bustling downtown promenade, and miles of lush walking trails. Developed in the early 1990’s by a real estate division of The Walt Disney Company, Celebration is a community that focuses on a neighborhood lifestyle reminiscent of small-town America. Celebration is a mere ten minutes from the world-renowned Walt Disney World theme parks, making it a popular and relaxing escape. The community offers unparalleled education, an emphasis on fitness and health, and has become one of Central Florida’s finest destinations to live, work, and play. The individual communities are separated into villages, each with it’s own distinct character. The architecture of Celebration blends traditional, Southeastern exteriors with modern floor plans. Celebration boasts a wide range of residential offerings in addition to its homes, with condominiums and townhouses available in each village.

LOOK FABULOUS General Anesthesia By George H. Pope, MD, FACS Is General Anesthesia Safe? It’s a question I hear often from patients considering cosmetic surgery, and I can answer without hesitation: yes. I’ve seen studies that found about 30 per cent of surgical patients are more afraid of the anesthesia than of the operation itself, and I believe it. But here are a few facts I use to reassure my patients: All anesthesia at OASIS, my surgical center, is given by board certiďŹ ed anesthesiologists, the gold standard in surgical care. They have the highest level of training and experience in administering anesthetics, monitoring the patient’s condition and managing emergencies. Because cosmetic surgery patients are in good general health, and we know in advance anesthesia will be given, we can reduce some of the factors that could cause anesthesia problems. We encourage patients to quit smoking, we may recommend that certain medications or supplements be discontinued, and, of course, we counsel patients not to eat or drink for a certain period before surgery. All of these things contribute to a safe anesthesia experience. We have invested in the most sophisticated equipment available to help keep patients safe, like an expired gas monitor, a device that measures the amount of anesthetic still in the body. This helps guard against anesthesia awareness, an extremely rare condition where the patient is not fully asleep. Newer, better anesthesia drugs are always being introduced that have fewer side effects and help patients wake up faster, both especially important considerations for outpatient surgery.

How-To...Teach Your Pooch to

Hang 20

By: Rebecca Coe Read more at: StyleToMe.com

> Men and women alike get pumped to shred and surf the gnarly waves out in the ocean, but did you know that your pup gets stoked to surf too? In San Diego, California, dog surfing has become extremely popular and at the Loews Coronado Bay Resort, they host an annual Surf Dog Competition, which began in 2005 and benefits local pet-related charities. Here are a few easy techniques that can help you teach your dog to surf the waves with you: 1. Purchase a foam surfboard and a doggy life-vest. 2. Put the board on the ground and allow your dog to explore it. Maybe he/she will

jump on it or maybe they won’t...they might need a treat to motivate them, but whatever you do, don’t force your dog onto the board. Let them decide to get on the board themselves. When they do stand on it, reward them with lots of praise and a treat!

Next, push and pull the board up and down, so that the dog gets a feel for what it will be like to ride the waves.

Take your pooch (make sure they have their doggy life-vest on) and the board out into shallow water. The best place is where there’s some whitewash. Hold the board and let your dog hop on. Once they’re on the board, wait for a small wave to come and push them out! Pick them up at the shore and reward them with lots of praise and a treat.

3. Once your pet is feeling comfortable being around and on the board, it’s time to take the board to the water. I recommend a lake or small kiddy pool. Place the board on the water and see if your dog will get on it. Use the same techniques as stated in step 2 to get him/her on the board and remember to reward them with lots of praise and a treat every time they get on the board.
