10 - PUBLISHER’S NOTE

> “Didn’t we just watch that the other day?”

A typical reaction when turning on the TV set nowadays. It seems they’ve run out of content or news; not to mention that the news we have is often repeated every ten minutes, as if we had not gotten or understood it the first time. And sure there are viewers who tune in and out of channels… I’d say mainly because they are annoyed by an overwhelming amount of commercials. It’s more like a lineup of commercials that has a few minutes of content in-between. I feel cheated, paying for cable/adding more channels and receiving less and less of actual content every year. Of course I like commercials as much as the next guy, however, understanding that the commercials are only effective to some degree is important. When analyzing the advertisement industry, it is important to remember that television advertisers are presented with “Nielsen Ratings,” which promise that millions of viewers will be watching their segments, but in reality, these estimates are based on a small amount of people. These ratings are tested on perhaps 1,000 or so viewers that, in actuality, are volunteers, and the rest of the numbers are simply guesses. I would be very surprised if a print magazine could sustain such practice. At Style Magazines, we know that if we were to repeat our editorial content in every issue, probably very few people would be enticed to read or even buy another magazine. Most people do not realize the valuable influence that magazines have on consumers when compared to other forms of media. A recent study of luxury magazine advertising ROI by ‘Marketing Evolution’ found that magazines are the most cost-effective means of influencing consumer behavior at certain stages of the decision-making process, or “purchase funnel,” beating out television and online media. The magazine industry is more capable of reaching, and more importantly, keeping consumers than other media, and it dominates two crucial stages of the consumer process: brand familiarity and purchase intent.

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

The brand familiarity of luxury magazines has become almost twice as effective as both TV and online media combined, and a study has revealed that in estimating numbers of consumers reached per $1,000., magazines index at 181 people versus 100 for television and 101 for online media. This brand familiarity is even more economical in the magazine industry, as the per capita cost to increase brand familiarity is about $1.40 for magazines, which comes in at a lower rate than the $2.61 spent for television and the $2.58 for online media. Magazines also dominate purchase intent, influencing 145 people versus 100 for television and 68 for online media. Expressed as a per capita expenditure, magazines cost about $1.23 per individual impact, much less than the $1.77 spent for TV and the $2.61 for online. These results can be found in a study from ‘Marketing Evolution,’ an independent marketing research company. Here at Style Magazines, we always continue to forge ahead with our efforts to support our fantastic advertisers who sincerely desire to inspire [you] our readers, with their message. These advertisements simply add to the quality of our publications, and we work tirelessly to keep you informed and entertained with fresh, unique editorials and amazing, never-beforeseen photo shoots. We constantly try our best to keep you off of the couch and encourage you to get out there in beautiful, sunny Orlando and experience the enjoyment of the Florida lifestyle. After reading our feature stories, maybe you’ll decide to treat yourself with a wonderful dinner at one of the great restaurants that our city has to offer, or just go crazy and buy that new outfit you’ve had your eye on for weeks. There’s nothing more important than happiness and to feel fabulous with both the body and the soul. We are here for You. Sincerely,

Sven J. Bode, Publisher

A NEW

Twist ON YOGA

Do you need something new and exciting to rejuvenate your yoga practice? Chances are you’ve heard something about the new yoga trend, aerial yoga. By Aubrie Blackton

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

HEALTH & BEAUTY - 15

> Aerial yoga has been evolving for years now but has just recently taken the yoga world by storm. Many studios that offer traditional yoga are starting to add new aerial yoga classes. Developed by former gymnast and Broadway choreographer Christopher Harrison, aerial yoga blends elements from traditional yoga and aerial art, which makes for a yoga practice that will literally sweep you off your feet! So you probably want to know what you’re getting yourself into before you show up for class. Of course every studio has their own way of doing things but these are some basics about aerial yoga. Everyone will be using a fabric aerial hammock that’s suspended from two hooks attached to the ceiling. Each hammock can support up to 2,000 pounds, so no need to worry! You will be taken through standing and seated poses, inversions, and balancing postures all while using your hammock. It is a relatively lowintensity workout although, like any other yoga class, some poses can be challenging. Now it may sound like you have to be some kind of acrobat to give

aerial yoga a try, but that’s certainly not the case. Almost every studio you visit will tell you that beginners are welcome and encouraged to come to class. You have to start somewhere, right? So, before your first class go in with an open mind. This practice comes with some health benefits that are too good to pass up. Aerial yoga helps build flexibility and agility as well as core strength. Floating in the air gives you the ability to ease into your stretches more than stretching on the ground. If you have back pain, aerial yoga could be your answer. The hammocks make inverted poses, such as hanging bound angle pose and shoulder stands easier to hold in correct alignment. If your alignment is corrected while holding these poses it takes a substantial amount of pressure off the neck and back. These inversions relieve back pain by creating space between your vertebral discs of your spinal cord which helps decompress and realign the spine.

INVERTING YOUR BODY CAN TRIGGER THE RELEASE OF ENDORPHINS AND SEROTONIN WHICH ARE HAPPY HORMONES.

Poor posture is an issue many people are faced with. Aerial Yoga can take you out of that slump! It increases your joint mobility, gives your tight muscles a break and properly aligns your bones to better your posture. Proper posture in itself has plenty of long-term health benefits. Feeling stressed or down in the dumps? Another benefit of aerial yoga is it makes you feel happy. Inverting your body can trigger the release of endorphins and serotonin, which are happy hormones. Your favorite pose in aerial yoga may be the cocoon pose. All you are asked to do is relax and curl in a ball; your hammock will support you and do the rest. You’ll leave your studio wanting more time to hang upside down! So if you’re looking for something new put a twist on your traditional yoga class and give aerial yoga a try! As always, consult with your doctor before starting any new supplements and exercise program. <

CITY NEWS - 17

Wednesday night! Unwine’d Wednesdays is becoming a weekly highlight for many locals who enjoy a refreshing beverage and live entertainment on the outdoor patio of one of Downtown Orlando’s hottest restaurants. Any event is bound to be successful with Orlando Style in the mix so it only makes sense that we would team up for yet another successful event. Located in the heart of downtown, Firestone Live has become a nightclub of international recognition. Hailed as one of the “freshest nightclubs in the world” by Billboard magazine and Rolling Stone, on March 7th, Firestone Live kicked off their first collaborative artistic event “One Chic Fete.” The ticketed event featured over 40 local artists, musicians, fashion designers and more, including vocal sensation The Edge Effect and special guest Casey Conroy. From runway shows and live music performances to henna art and a photography gallery, One Chic Fete brought together a fantastic fusion of all things creative for one unforgettable celebration. From March 8-16th, more than 100,000 Harley-Davidson enthusiasts from across the globe turned out for Orlando Bike Week 2014. The event was headquartered at the Orlando Harley-Davidson Historic Factory Dealership, a detailed re-creation of the 1910 factory and the 1903 “shack” in which the Harley legend was born. Some of the many festivities included live music, games and shows. One of the headlining events was the Thursday Night Fight that took place on the 13th. Large crowds turned up to watch amateur fighters take each other on in a “Bikeweek Beatdown” of extreme cage fighting. In addition to the many other Bike Week activities, attendees also got the chance to enjoy various vendors providing everything from new

bike accessories and sunglasses to classic leather attire and heavy metal jewelry. St. Patrick’s Day weekend brought a very different kind of party to Wall Street Plaza from March 15-17th. Downtown Orlando’s popular hangout spot was a sea of green as hundreds arrived from near and far to enjoy a three day weekend of partying with live Irish music and plenty of green beer. The fun-filled weekend kicked off on Saturday with the St. Practice Day Block Party. Sunday Funday St. Pat’s Style followed with yet another raging party, but Monday proved to be the main event with the St. Patrick’s Day Block Party. Doors opened at high noon so everyone could start their week off right—with more Guinness, more Jameson and even more green beer! Live music from 7 Nations, Off Kilter, The Lighter Exchange and Pipes & Drums kicked the party up a notch as attendees laughed, drank, threw beads and shook their shamrocks all night long.

brides to Embassy Suites Altamonte. The event was just one of more than 100 yearly bridal shows which provide brides-to-be with an opportunity to find their dream gown at an incredible savings, while contributing to services that provide programs and help for cancer patients, their families and caregivers. Show sales included dozens of new, name brand and designer gowns, as well as lovingly worn gowns in various styles and sizes. Have you said “I do” yet? Find out how you can donate your own wedding dress to BABC by visiting: www.BridesAgainstBreastCancer.org. From March 21-23rd, the 2014 Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival held its 55th annual show. Named America’s Best Juried Fine Art Fair by Art Fair Calendar, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals. It is also ranked the #1 Best Fine Art and Design Show in the southeast by Sunshine Artist magazine. The festival took place in Central Park along Park Avenue in downtown Winter Park and brought thousands of local artists and art lovers in the Central Florida community together. The festival is produced by an all-volunteer board and draws more than 350,000 visitors each year. The three-day event featured live concerts in the park, the Children’s Workshop Village, fantastic food and fabulous sidewalk cafes..< Know of a Not-To-Be Missed Event? @ W XYZ Aloft’s Swanky Bar By Maria Delis

> The former headquarters of the Orlando Utilities Commission now has a South Beach look. The 1960s-era building houses the Aloft Hotel, a trendy boutique brand by Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. As part of the future arts and entertainment enclave, thanks to the upcoming opening of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, Aloft fits right in with its luminous façade and vibrant W XYZ Bar. The W chain developed the concept in 2005 and opened the first hotel in 2008 at the Trudeau International Airport in Toronto. At Aloft Orlando Downtown, original elements remain from the old OUC, including the teak wood panels and terrazzo floors. From Orange Avenue you ascend the steps onto a veranda. On the left, you have an urban-sleek pool. To the right, W XYZ’s outdoor patio seating. In the lobby you find vintage floors juxtaposed against neon blue lights illuminating a large staircase descending to banquet rooms. Keeping with the trendy concept, the lower level has unisex restrooms and an uber modern décor – Industrial flooring, bright walls and bold paintings. The hotel has 7,000 square feet of event space across eleven spaces, including boardrooms on higher floors, offering fantastic views of the city. The boutique hotel has only 118 rooms, yet spacious, with the latest amenities. (And fur babies stay for free!) Aloft is sure to attract the young professional who wants to stay closer to the downtown action. For visitors

wishing to escape the theme-park tourist scene and seek highend dining and imbibing, the arts and professional sports, Downtown Orlando has much to offer. In fact, Downtown is experiencing a renaissance. New, luxury high-rise condos, posh dining, more art galleries, entertainment venues, a Major League Soccer expansion team, new sports stadiums, and a gorgeous performing arts center opening in the fall of 2014, will attract more locals and out-of-town guests searching for a mini NYC experience. Across from the front desk, Aloft features the Re:Fuel Snack Bar. Coffee? Tea? Nibbles? They got them. But the main attraction is the lobby lounge. Ornate with comfy contemporary seating, and a lit up bar, W XYZ attracts. Here you’ll find a variety of upscale light fare. And on Happy Hour, Mondays through Fridays, 4-7 p.m., you can get $2 off all appetizers, like the delish mozzarella, chicken and pesto flatbread. They also offer $3 domestic bottled beer, $4 house wines and $5 well drinks. On weekday eves, hotel guests and young professionals who work or live downtown, enjoy the Happy Hour perks. The vibe is definitely different from Central, Wall and Church Street bar scenes: Professionals looking to mix and mingle with a good drink in a swanky ambience. Great DJ sets and live music included. On weekend nights, the crowd demographic shifts. “We see more locals,” the bartender told me. Pick up the Kilowatt Mojito (Veev Acai liqueur and fresh blueberries), or a classic Gin & Tonic, and walk over to the pool table. Or, enjoy the Florida spring weather on the patio, with its incandescent centerpieces and SoBe-style sectionals. If you’re looking to add an up-scale lounge to your Happy Hour venues, and want to preview “Orlando 2.0,” check out W XYZ bar! <

TOYS - 37

The three-cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric motor draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a conventional domestic power socket, and sends its power to the front axle. This bespoke plug-in hybrid system, developed and produced by the BMW Group, enables a range in everyday driving of up to 35 kilometres (approx. 22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (approx. 75 mph) on electric power alone, coupled with a “glued-to-theroad” all-wheel driving experience headlined by powerful acceleration and a dynamically-biased distribution of power through enthusiastically taken corners. The more powerful of the two power sources drives the rear wheels and uses the electric boost from the hybrid system to deliver hallmark BMW driving pleasure while at the same time offering groundbreaking levels of efficiency. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 4.4 seconds, yet average fuel consumption – as calculated in the EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles – stands at 2.5 litres per 100

kilometres (113 mpg imp) from launch. CO2 emissions come in at 59 grams per kilometre. For maximum driving pleasure and efficiency: BMW TwinPower Turbo engine and electric motor developed by the BMW Group. The plug-in hybrid drive system of the BMW i8, which comprises a BMW TwinPower Turbo engine combined with BMW eDrive technology, offers the best of both worlds: excellent potential for improved efficiency and exciting, sporty driving characteristics. The BMW Group has developed not only the internal combustion engine and electric motor inhouse but also the power electronics and the battery. This ensures that all these components offer high product and quality standards, based on the outstanding capabilities of the BMW Group in the field of powertrain research and development. The revolutionary character of the BMW i8 is emphasised by a further innovation: the use of an internal combustion engine which is making its debut in this model. The BMW i8 is the first BMW production model to be powered by a three-cylinder petrol engine. This highly turbocharged unit is equipped with latest-generation BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. It is exceptionally compact and develops maximum power of 170 kW/231 hp from its 1.5-litre displacement. The resulting specific output of 113 kW/154 hp per litre of displacement is on a par with high-performance sports car engines and is the highest of any engine produced by the BMW Group. The car’s second power source is a hybrid synchronous electric motor specially developed and produced by the BMW Group for the BMW i8. The motor develops maximum power of 96 kW/131 hp and produces its maximum torque of around 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft) from standstill. Typically for an electric motor, responsive power is instantly available when starting and this continues into the higher load ranges. Credit for the linear power delivery, which extends right up to the high end of the rpm range, goes to a special motor design principle ex-

clusive to BMW i. BMW eDrive technology refines and improves on the principle of the permanently excited synchronous motor with a special arrangement and dimensions for the torque-producing components. This results in a self-magnetising effect normally confined to reluctance motors. This additional excitation ensures that the electromechanical field generated when current is applied remains stable even at high rpm. Customers also have the option of ordering the BMW i Wallbox Pro. Among the benefits provided by this second version of the charging point are additional convenience features. The BMW i Wallbox Pro has a 7.4-inch colour touchscreen which optimises management of the charging process. Among the information displayed on the TFT monitor are the battery charge level, the amount of energy fed into the battery so far and data on previous charge cycles. Information about charging times and energy consumption can be called up in lists sorted by user or vehicle. The available information can be transferred via an internet connection, for example for comparison or billing purposes. A BMW i Wallbox Pro which is accessible to several users can be protected from unauthorised use via PIN codes. This version of the charging point has been specially designed for use with self-generated solar energy. To this end, BMW is working with SOLARWATT to give future owners of a BMW i vehicle access to innovative carports equipped with glass-glass modules for charging the battery – and supplying their home with solar power. <

> The BMW i8 embodies a revolutionary, future-focused interpretation of the driving pleasure for which BMW is renowned. It was purpose-designed as a plug-in-hybrid sports car offering agile performance and outstanding efficiency. An exceptionally lightweight and aerodynamically optimised body – including a passenger cell made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) – plus advanced BMW eDrive drive system technology, a compact, highly turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and intelligent energy management all come together to create an overall concept that represents a new landmark in the Efficient Dynamics development strategy. The BMW i8 blends the performance of a top-end sports car with fuel economy and emissions more familiar in a small city model. It is based, moreover, around a vehicle architecture that offers the perfect platform for thrillingly agile handling, thanks to an ultra-low centre of gravity and almost exactly 50 : 50 weight distribution.

CELEBRITIES’ MIND-BODY-SOUL-IN-MOTION The mind, body and soul are powerful forces! These celebrities swear by the following beliefs and activities, passionately crediting them with their success, health, happiness and mental well-being. By Riesa Pascal

MEDITATION The Transcendental Meditation technique consists of silently repeating a mantra while sitting comfortably with eyes closed for 15-20 minutes daily. It is believed that the mantra is a tool, which allows the individual’s attention to focus naturally on a less active, quieter style of mental functioning. 13-time Emmy award winning actress and popular talk-show host Ellen DeGeneres has been practicing Transcendental Meditation for 3 years and is a firm believer in its many benefits. DeGeneres first learned the technique from Russell Simmons who shared about the practice on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. She has since become a passionate supporter of the David Lynch Foundation, which aims to help children, and adults in “atrisk” populations learn Transcendental Meditation and “transform their lives from within.” In 2012, DeGeneres was the opening speaker at Lynch’s third annual “Change Begins Within” benefit gala. “It gives me this peaceful feeling and I love it so much and I talk about it as much as I can on the show without sounding like I’m preaching about it, but I can’t say enough about it.” - Ellen DeGeneres

SPIRITUALITY Bear Grylls is a British adventurer, writer and television presenter. He is best known for hosting Discovery Channel’s award winning television series Man vs. Wild. In the show, Grylls travels around the globe looking for some of the world’s most dangerous locations and uninhabitable environments in order to show how to survive in them. One might expect someone with such a deep love for nature to be a believer in pantheism, but Grylls is actually a passionate and outspoken Christian. Grylls has called his faith a backbone during many difficult times and says it is the one thing that truly sustains him. Despite all Grylls’ countless wild expeditions, he has said that his greatest victory came in accepting his faith unashamedly and becoming bold in sharing it. “Many great people over the centuries have depended on their faith - it is a sign of great strength to need Jesus in your life.” - Bear Grylls

YOGA To say yoga has gained popularity in Hollywood is quiet an understatement. Every tabloid cover seems to be plastered with the latest celebrity on their way to the gym with a yoga mat rolled under their arm. Despite yoga’s growing popularity amongst both men and women, it still tends to be seen as a mostly female activity. That’s why it may come as a surprise to learn that Robert Downey Jr. is a big-time practitioner of yoga. Downey Jr. regularly trains with celebrity instructor Vinnie Marino, and enjoys intense power-flow classes. The Iron Man star spoke to both Men’s Fitness and TIME magazines about the role yoga has played in his health and well-being. Downey Jr. has also credited yoga as a tool he used to help combat drug addictions and legal troubles that affected his early career. “I need a lot of support... Life is really hard, and I don’t see some active benevolent force out there. I see it as basically a really cool survival game. You get on the right side of the tracks, and you now are actually working with what some people would call magic.” - Robert Downey Jr.

FITNESS Cameron Diaz is known for being one of Hollywood’s hottest, fittest celebrities. She is the living embodiment of aging gracefully. The beautiful actress has said she “fell into fitness by accident” but now describes exercise as being like eating, sleeping and breathing. She is careful to be consistent in her exercise and even wrote The Body Book to explain the science behind why she looks and feels amazing. The former smoker has said that one of her favorite ways to stay consistent with exercise and keep her chiseled body in shape is through CrossFit, which she first discovered through her baseball star ex, Alex Rodriguez. Diaz’s hope is to help change other women’s lives by encouraging them to also pursue a life of fitness. “It’s become something I depend on physically and emotionally. I feel so much more empowered now.” - Cameron Diaz

THE LAW OF ATTRACTION AND POSITIVE THINKING In 2006 Rhonda Byrne’s bestselling book, The Secret, introduced millions of people to the Law of Attraction and the power of positive thinking. One surprising celebrity who is quite vocal in his belief that positive thinking and affirmations are the key to success and happiness is comedian Jim Carrey. His rise to fame and wealth is an incredibly inspirational story, which he has shared often. One of the most fascinating stories involving Carrey’s journey to success and his belief in positive affirmations actually took place over the course of many years. Long before Carrey was rich and famous, he wrote a check to himself in the amount of 10 million dollars for “acting services rendered.” He postdated it for 1995 and carried the check in his wallet everywhere he went. In addition to having the check on him, Carrey would also visualize himself cashing the check and what he would buy with it. By the time 1995 rang in, the beloved actor was indeed rich enough to cash the check although he reportedly placed the check in his father’s coat pocket after he passed away instead. “I’ve always believed in magic. When I wasn’t doing anything in this town, I’d go up every night, sit on Mulholland Drive, look out at the city, stretch out my arms, and say, “Everybody wants to work with me. I’m a really good actor. I have all kinds of great movie offers.” I’d just repeat these things over and over, literally convincing myself that I had a couple movies lined up. I’d drive down that hill, ready to take the world on, going, “Movie offers are out there for me, I just don’t hear them yet.” It was like total affirmations, antidotes to the stuff that stems from my family background.” - Jim Carrey < StyleToMe.com

ORGANIC, OR... JUST PLAIN MARKETING?

By Mark NeJame Contributor Vanessa Braeley, Associate Attorney with NeJame Law

> Going organic is more than just a health craze, it’s a way of life – and more people are subscribing to it every day. The major benefits of living an organic life seem obvious: consume less toxins and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), have a cleaner, healthier body. But is that what’s really going on? Or are we falling victims to marketing by purchasing items labeled “organic”? Perhaps one of the most popular misconceptions is that the FDA is responsible for the truth behind organic claims. While the FDA certainly plays a role in product labeling, it’s the USDA that takes jurisdiction over certifying organic products. In order for the USDA to authorize a stamp of approval as truly “USDA Certified Organic,” the products must meet the following standards:

1. Produced without use of GMOs, Mark NeJame

radiation, or sewage sludge (yup, these are the words of the USDA. Makes you wonder…)

2. Produced per the National Allowed and Prohibited Substances list.

3. Overseen by a USDA National Organic Program authorized certifying agent. These three little rules may seem bland at best, but their importance is emphasized when compared to non-organic production standards. And remember, certifying a product as organic is not the only step. The product needs to be packaged and labeled – this is where things can get confusing to the consumer. Take a look at the USDA’s categories of organic foods: 100% organic; organic; made with organic ingredients; specific organic ingredients. Confusing, right? It shouldn’t be. Terms such as “confusing” or “misleading” are adjectives the FDA works hard to avoid; product labels should clearly and honestly inform the consumer what it is purchasing. The FDA does its best, but oftentimes the labels are so misleading, the consumer has no idea what they are purchasing.

The USDA has provided some insight on the differences in organic products. Here is a quick-reference guide for your next trip to the market:

IN THE NEWS - 43

As we collectively become a more health-conscientious society, these labeling laws will continue to evolve. The USDA and FDA work together in an attempt to keep us adequately informed, and while the information consumers receive may at the moment be “confusing” and “misleading,” we thankfully have the ability to research on our own. No matter what’s on the shelves at the market, these agencies are put in place for the safety of the consumer, so transparency is key. We may just have to do a little digging to get to the truth. <

TOUCH Being able to touch and feel can bring a lot of satisfaction to your life. Just think about how you feel when you hug someone you love; it is an indescribable feeling that makes you feel so good that sometimes you don’t even want to let go. The reason you feel this good is because the human touch releases endorphins which can physically help reduce blood pressure, stress, and anxiety, they can also boost your immune system, and best of all they can slow down much of the aging process. So go ahead, give that someone special a great big hug! Also, treat yourself to a nice relaxing day either at home or at a spa, take a bubble bath, exfoliate your skin, get a massage, and just enjoy how your body reacts to all this pampering. Taking care of yourself will heal your mind, body, and spirit, help you gain self-confidence, and you’ll be glowing too. Use all your senses to your advantage. Get out of that same old routine and don’t be afraid of trying new things; be more curious and get to know yourself on a deeper level. Life can get hectic at times, but with the help of our senses we can become better versions of ourselves. As always, consult with your doctor before starting any new diet or exercise regimen, and ask if you can incorporate aromatherapy/essential oils as well. <

LANA DEL REY How The “Body Electric” Singer has Shocked and Shaken America’s Idea of Inner Beauty By Courtney Caggiano

> Ever since Lana Del Rey’s rise to fame in 2012 with the debut of her first widely released album, Born To Die, the singer has redefined the pop world’s impression of external beauty by portraying it as a reflection of the soul. From her avant-garde single, “Video Games,” to her shy persona, Del Rey has countered the facade of the everyday pop princess. Every feature of Del Rey’s artistry is based on the romantic ideal that one’s soul is the source of true beauty, and any beauty in one’s visual appearance is simply an expression of that within the soul. Del Rey’s soul is an old one, born of a nostalgic nature that harkens back to an age gone by; her thematic lyrics paint a picture of an America that may have existed in the free-spirited 1960s, if that America had been captured in sepiatone and drowned in cinematic appeal.

Donned in mod dresses, sky-high teased hair, and a somber, doe-eyed simper, it is easily seen that Del Rey has crafted her now infamous image around her soulful songs. Although Del Rey has been highly publicized for her fashionable beauty, she is quick to address the fact that her appearance is the last of her characteristics for which she longs for attention. In her latest EP, Paradise, Del Rey assures her listeners that the only beauty of any importance is derived from the soul. “Body Electric,” one of the stand out tracks on Paradise, emphasizes this belief, as Del Rey references the romantic American poet Walt Whitman and one of his most audacious poems, “I Sing the Body Electric.” Both the poem and Del Rey’s interpretation imply that physical appearance, with which this world has become

so fascinated, is merely a reflection of one’s internal spirit. The hope to inspire her fans to focus on inner beauty rather than outward appearance clearly plays a prominent role in Del Rey’s Paradise, which is evident in her opening track, “Ride,” a song that depicts the story of a girl trying to find herself on the journey of life. Del Rey chooses the theme of bettering oneself internally, through experience and emotion, rather than externally, knowing that self-realization lays the groundwork for developing a beautiful soul that represents the true uniqueness of a person. In April of 2013, Del Rey revisited these thematic elements of Paradise in the alternative rock ballad, “Young and Beautiful,” her magnetic contribution to the compilation soundtrack inspired by the

summer film, The Great Gatsby. Expressing herself in her usual dreamy vocals, Del Rey explores the idea that love is based not only on a physical attraction, but rather a deep admiration for the soul. As she sings of the one she loves, Del Rey declares the allure of her lover’s “pretty face and electric soul,” illustrating that both aspects of a person are worthy of affection. Audiences and critics alike seem to have appreciated Del Rey’s fascinating interpretation of inner beauty, as the song became Del Rey’s highest ranking single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and has sold over one million copies in the United States. This idea of beauty as a reflection is seen not only throughout Del Rey’s musical works, but her other artistic endeavors as well. In December 2013, Del Rey premiered her first short film, Tropico, a creative depiction of Del Rey’s thoughts on the beauty within the soul. The film explores the singer’s fear of living in a world that idolizes the image of pop

icons and immortalizes the idea of fleeting attractiveness, and Del Rey’s songs serving as the soundtrack offer a glimpse of eternal hope in such a world. In today’s generation, in which stars of the music industry place such a high importance on physical appearance, Del Rey’s emphasis on true beauty that starts from within is both inspiring and refreshing. Too often we hope to improve our outward appearance, but we sometimes forget that nurturing the soul is even more important. If we are satisfied with who we are on a spiritual level, this satisfaction will shine through, and inner peace will serve as the true foundation for our beauty. Del Rey remains to be a positive influence on her listeners as she represents the belief that looks are not the only determiner of one’s beauty. Always looking for the next opportunity to challenge the status quo, Del Rey is currently working on her second full-length studio album,

Ultraviolence, which is to be produced by rocker Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys and will be released later this year. Judging by the past musical experiments of the nonconformist songstress, this album is sure to explore more of Del Rey’s unconventional ideals. <

48 - COCKTAIL HOUR

Barfly

©

By Travis Joiner

> We all walk into the bar and usually order our regular cocktail without thinking twice. No matter what your elixir of choice is you know what you drink and what it tastes like. What if I told you the glass that holds your spirit preference makes a difference to your experience? Would that make you pay attention to what vessel you sip from the next time you are at your favorite watering hole? I promise you will appreciate your bartender who knows what glass to use even more the next time you belly up to the bar. Most of us have a go to cocktail when we go out to a bar or restaurant. No matter where you are in the world your cocktail should conform to the glass in your hand. Vodka and soda is your choice; a rocks glass is placed in front of you without a second thought from you. A mojito is served in a tall glass with a straw and the ever-present mint and lime mingling together among the ice. A snifter gets pulled out after a dinner party for cognac and the like. But have you ever wondered why? There is a method to the madness that we would usually overlook. Most bars will serve a cocktail or liquor in a few glasses that should be found in all bars universally. You have the all-purpose rocks glass aka Old Fashioned or double Old Fashioned glass. There is also the Collins glass, snifter, martini and the list goes on.

StyleToMe.com

I want to focus on the glassware you find most often in the bar, the rocks glass. Whether you realize it or not this glass helps accentuate the flavors that make you cherish the drink that sits in front of you. A single liquor drink on the rocks, with muddled fruit, bitters or a mixer is the classic drink that ends up in this style of glass. A usually short and wide brim allows you to take in the aromas and flavors that are mixed within. This style of glass affects both your taste and your sense of smell in a positive way. It is my favorite glass because it serves as the bartenders’ multi-tool behind the bar. If you want your whiskey neat this is the glass I would use to highlight the flavor and style of the spirit. The size and shape allows the spirit to open up and reveal the magic and hard work that went into creating something meant to please. The Old Fashioned cocktail is proof that this type of glass is the perfect choice so much that it is usually called an Old Fashioned glass. The classic Old Fashioned features not only your favorite whiskey but the addition of bitters, sugar and finished with a cherry and orange slice. Take a sip of one of these and you understand why it earned the right to have its moniker attached to a style of glassware. The whiskey and bitters open up and meld nicely on that first taste while the cherry and orange tickle your nose like a fruit filled feather floating up from the glass. If this was in a

Collins glass, tall and thin, it would lose something without question. It might seem like a little thing but these little nuances add up to build a great cocktail experience. Cocktails that contain a single liquor and mixer on the rocks are most often found in this type of glass as well. The same reasoning applies as the wide style of the glass allows the liquid within to become a harmonious blend that pleases our senses and usually ends up in the classic saying, “Bartender, hit me again.” One of the trends that is a perfect fit for the rocks glass is a large sphere of ice usually surrounded by bourbon or scotch. This glass allows the igloo size chunk of ice to slowly melt and let the chosen liquor in the rocks glass be the star. I would be willing to bet that most of us do not even give it a second thought when it comes to which type of glass ends up in front of us or why. No matter how you prefer your cocktail be sure to know there was some thought in choosing the right glassware to fit the drink. There really is a reason behind the many shapes and sizes of the glassware that is awaiting the next cocktail behind the bar. Of those choices the rocks glass reigns supreme because of its versatility and ability to deliver and delight your senses in more ways than one. This is also why I award it “best in glass.” Cheers <

landscapes. With impressive architecture and artistic designs, the Waldorf Astoria lobby seems to beckon you to travel into a world of indulgence. This indulgence continues as you turn to your left and pass though the beautiful platinum doors of the Waldorf Astoria Spa, a paradise for both the body and the soul that is truly unlike any other. If you are planning to splurge at a spa, this is the place to spend your day of luxury. The entire spa embodies relaxation, with its pristine charm reflected in tranquil wood tones and mirrored in silver & gold accents. The beauty of the spa represents the harmonious balance of peaceful nature and modern simplic-

ity, and from the first step into the spa lobby, you’ll be swept away from the worries and stress of everyday life. The Waldorf Astoria Spa is 24,000 square feet of pure indulgence, featuring 22 indoor treatment rooms, where your spa journey will begin. This journey is, as always, unique to every spa guest, as treatments are customized to fulfill the desires and expectations of each individual. After selecting the treatment of your choice, you will be provided with a personalized analysis and skin diagnosis, ensuring that your procedure will be specifically created for your skin. The specialists at the Waldorf Astoria Spa guarantee that every aspect of your ap-

pointment is tailored to your distinctive needs, and the entire spa staff is warmly welcoming and always there for your every need. All of the spa’s therapists are extremely helpful and strive to make your stay blissful and stress-free, including Amanda, one of the spa’s excellent massage therapists, and Stephanie, a knowledgeable esthetician who can help you find the perfect treatment to transform your skin.

ment that stimulates the skin and leaves it smooth and restored. The therapy begins with an overall body exfoliation, which prepares the skin to absorb the nourishing oils, and continues with a sculpting massage that increases firmness and vitality of the skin. After the massage, anti-aging ingredients are applied, allowing your entire body to feel younger, more toned, and silky to the touch.

As you enjoy the facial, body therapy, or massage of your choice, feel free to indulge yourself in some of the hotel’s most decadent pleasures. Upon your visit, your lounge attendant or your specialist will provide you with Champagne to transform your stay at the spa into an elegant affair. Also, because a day of pampering can work up quite an appetite, spa guests are invited to order delicious treats from the Waldorf Astoria room service menu.

A spa day would not be complete without an invigorating massage, and the Swedish Massage was heavenly. This classic massage is designed to take you on a relaxing getaway without leaving the spa, and it will keep you at peace long after your appointment. Long, soothing Swedish strokes release even the tensest areas on your body, and the calming environment of the Waldorf Astoria Spa only adds to the serenity. Like all of the massages on the spa menu, the Swedish Massage is personalized to fulfill specific requests of each visitor. Guests may choose between a 50-minute or 80-minute treatment, and the even-pressure strokes are customized to meet each individual’s desires and needs. Although any of these spa options will surely satisfy anyone looking for a day of leisure, the spa offers a full menu of treatments and therapies to suit.

One of the most refreshing treatments on the Spa menu is the HydraFacial, a revolutionary procedure that provides soothing hydration to thirsty skin. Through a nonsurgical process called “hydradermabrasion,” the HydraFacial exfoliates and replenishes the surface of the skin while immediately improving the complexion without any needles, lasers, or the slightest discomfort. This method of exfoliation is an inventive, non-irritating alternative to the commonly used microdermabrasion, and it is perfect for those with sensitive skin. Not only does the facial use this innovative form of exfoliation to remove dead skin and extract impurities, it also leaves your skin cells recharged and refreshed with a variety of soothing moisturizing serums. This facial is designed for those of all skin types, including those with fine lines, dark marks, and acne, and guests can choose either 25-minute or 50-minute treatments. The HydraFacial’s instant results make it one of the most popular treatments in the Spa. The Waldorf Astoria Spa also offers beneficial body therapies, such as the Perfect Body Therapy, an 80-minute treat-

Valet Parking Spa guests not staying on the hotel property receive complimentary valet parking on the day of their service. Please advise reservations at the time of booking. After a tranquil afternoon at the spa, why not allow the luxury to continue with a delectable dinner at one of the fine restaurants at Waldorf Astoria? STRESSED

TRESS RESCUE Privé Salon Introduces Kérastase Chronologiste By Maria Delis

> Hair takes a lot of abuse. Flat irons, blow dryers, bleach, color, UV rays … All are culprits in hair damage. And some of us have tried just about anything that promises to salvage our tresses: From raw eggs to olive oil, to pricey treatments that, sometimes, fail to meet our expectations. So when I heard of Privé Salon’s newest addition, a hair care miracle, I set out to experience it for myself. The “New Age” treatment has been making waves as the ultra-premium cure for hair and scalp. But only 200 salons nationwide offer the exclusive product. “Privé was chosen from Kérastase Paris to represent the line,” says Revi Rofe, owner and manager of Orlando’s elite salon.

“We listen to what the client wants,” says Revi. A ten-minute mandatory consultation allows for guaranteed results. The full-service salon carries out founder Laurent Dufourg’s vision and features a “departmentalized approach” where a team (a stylist, colorist and an assistant) makes sure to create the right style to match your expectations. Plus, Privé stylists and colorists are highly trained and participate in continuing education programs. “We mold our stylists,” adds Revi. Its central location, in front of the Mall at Millenia, attracts both local and out-oftown clientele. So, what’s the Chronologiste in-salon Ritual?

“We’re the only independent salon in Central Florida to offer Chronologiste,” she told me. Think of this mask as a hair facial – a thick restorative concentrate that can transform dry, stressed hair in one application. Of course, depending on the extent of the damage, you may want to repeat the treatment every couple of weeks for an ultimate hair resurrection. It is definitely lavish pampering for your hair. But Privé is all about pampering.

It all begins with a thorough consultation with your stylist. After all questions have been answered, your host, a stylist assistant, will take you back to the shampoo room. Sit back and relax on a soft recliner, while the assistant gives you a soothing scalp and neck massage. After the de-stressing lather, your host takes you back to the chair. Your cappuccino, or a glass of wine, is waiting for you to enjoy while your team works its magic.

When the salon opened its doors in Orlando eight years ago, it quickly rose to its elite status. The reason?

Your stylist infuses two unique elements: Pearls that are immersed in seawater and a cream rich in nourishing essentials.

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

The pearls house important vitamins, minerals and nutrients to nourish the fiber, while the velvety cream is made up of gluco-lipids, ceramides, cationic derivatives, Vitamin E, silicone concentrate and Bisabol – each one playing a vital role in hair repair. After parting your damp hair into four sections, your stylist gently applies the mixture, saturating every strand. Unlike other treatments, Chronologiste uses your own body heat to activate. The foil cap stays on for approximately ten minutes. In the meantime, sip on your drink of choice and relax. “It takes back time,” says Francesca Herrick, my stylist for the day. “Your hair feels healthy, how it felt before the damage.” Indeed. After the product was thoroughly rinsed out (and I enjoyed a second massage by Charles), my scalp felt hydrated and regenerated. The blowout revealed healthy, supple hair. I could not help but run my fingers through my now silky locks. Although it was tempting to swish my hair, a la cliché shampoo commercial, I held off until I stepped outside. Go ahead, indulge in the luxurious Ritual – Your stressed tresses deserve it! <

as well as frequent dieters. Breath will have a fishy smell or smell of urine or ammonia in people with chronic kidney failure. Sinusitis, which is very prevalent here in Florida, can cause bad breath. So you can see there are various conditions that can contribute to bad breath. Using mouthwash to cover up bad breath only masks the odor and does not cure the problem. So how do I know I have bad breath? Here’s a simple technique; lick the back of your hand, let it dry and smell that. The following guidelines will help you eliminate or reduce your bad breath :

> Among the top 10 Common Dental problems, bad breath was rated #1. Here are the 10 most common dental problems; 1.Bad Breath, 2. Tooth Decay, 3. Gum Disease, 4. Oral Cancer, 5. Mouth Sores, 6.Tooth Erosion, 7. Tooth Sensitivity, 8. Toothaches, 9. Dental Emergencies,10. Unattractive Smile. Today I’m going to discuss bad breath; also called halitosis which can be downright embarrassing. According to dental studies, about 85% of people with constant bad breath have a dental condition that is the blame. Gum disease, cavities, oral cancer, dry mouth, and bacteria on the tongue all can cause bad breath. Also; medical conditions can cause bad breath. Ketoacidosis occurs in diabetics when there is insufficient glucose in the blood for the body to use as energy. An obvious sign of this is a fruity-smelling odor in the breath. People with eating disorders may experience bad breath,

OrlandoStyleMagazine.com

1. Brush your teeth and floss everyday; especially after meals that may contain food or spices that contribute to bad breath. Brushing your tongue will help in getting rid of bacteria that can get trapped in the tiny hair-like fibers on the tongue. 2. Visit your dentist on a regular basis to insure there are no cavities or underlying gum disease.

10. Finally the use of commercially marketed breath freshening kits and bad breath remedies may help prevent bad breath however there is insufficient research that has shown a cure for bad breath. Always ask your dentist or pharmacist before you invest in these products. I hope these simple suggestions will help you insure that your breath is pleasing and if not that it makes you aware that there could be an underlying problem. Remember not having pain does not mean there is no disease or pathology. If in doubt see your dental team. My best patient is the one I educate. Yours for better dentistry and health, Carl D. Bilancione D.M.D. <

In closing as a general dentist it is imperative that I work with a team of experts and these professionals are part of my team.

3. An easy way to prevent bad breath is to chew parsley after a meal. Parsley contains chlorophyll, which happens to be a known breath freshener. 4. One can place a few drops of tee tree oil or peppermint oil on your tongue or a few drops on your toothbrush along with the toothpaste to freshened your breath.

5. Avoid foods that cause bad breath; garlic, onions, cabbage, certain spices, and coffee. 6. Smoking causes bad breath also so quitting has much more beneficial effects than having better smelling breath. 7. Xerostomia or dry mouth is a major factor when it comes to bad breath. Sip water throughout the day and during meals. Chew sugar- free gum or dissolve sugar-free candy slowly in your mouth to increase saliva flow. 8. Avoid traditional mouthwashes. Most are loaded with alcohol which can cause dry mouth. These mouthwashes also create an environment that bacteria love. 9. Occasionally use a mixture of 50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% water as a mouth rinse. Hydrogen peroxide will help kill the bacteria that cause bad breath.

> Being under investigation for or charged with a crime is one of the greatest causes of stress and anxiety. Realizing that you may lose your liberty, as well as face public humiliation, causes stress that effects people in different ways. Loss of sleep, loss of productivity, loss of concentration and even thoughts of suicide are common examples of the effects of stress. In helping clients who must deal with the criminal justice system, I routinely discuss the impact stress may have on daily life. Recognizing that stress is a normal consequence of facing criminal charges is a first step in dealing with the stress. While most people have a certain amount of stress in their lives, few have had to deal with the extreme stress caused by a criminal case. I have observed, both men and women, break down and cry in my office. They will call complaining of lack of sleep and inability to function. I believe it is im-

portant for an attorney to let clients know that what they are experiencing is to be expected, under the circumstances. Help in coping with the stress caused by a criminal case can take many forms. Open communication between attorney and client can relieve stress by answering questions, explaining procedures, and understanding the legal case. Reaching out to a spouse or family member may also be helpful. Many also benefit from talking with clergy or counseling with health care professionals. It is important to realize that help, both legal, psychological and emotional, is available and important. <

THE PROFESSIONALS - 75

THE

PROFESSIONALS SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW

> Our great city has no shortage of competent lawyers practicing their trade but we thought it would be interesting and informative to present a sampling of law professionals in our midst who represent Medical Malpractice. There are a multitude of specialties in the practice of law, each requiring expertise gleaned through formal education, personal experience and prior court established precedents often referred to as case law. Medical Malpractice is a legal term for you (or a loved one) who suffered an injury based on a bad diagnosis, botched surgery, doctor fraud, prescription error or breach of doctor-patient confidentiality. Medical malpractice lawyers may also defend you if you are a medical professional who was sued for malpractice.

The reality is that there are a variety of factors that determine the qualifications of an attorney. Objective factors include trial experience and results in past cases but most factors are subjective such as the quality or persuasiveness of an argument in court, skill at negotiating or giving legal advice, and making sure the attorney being considered has a good reputation in the legal community and the community at large, in the location where your case will be heard. The attorneys being showcased in the following pages are representative of the specialized areas of Medical Malpractice and are considered to be excellent in their field. All share total dedication to the practice of law and zealousness in representing their clients. We suggest you practice your due diligence in choosing the right law firm to represent you in the event legal representation is required. <

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW - 81

JOHN ELLIOTT LEIGHTON, ESQ. “A passion for people hurt by medical mistakes” Medical Malpractice Trial Attorney

> When it comes to health care, John Leighton is passionate. “Patients get treated like second class citizens.” Leighton has seen so many cases of medical mistakes, so little regulation, and so many restrictions on patients’ rights, that it drives him harder than ever to represent victims of medical malpractice. Leighton, an accomplished board certified trial lawyer, handles malpractice cases throughout Florida but his reputation spans beyond the state, having been hired by families in Texas and Illinois to try malpractice cases there as well. In one, a hospital failed to promptly treat a woman who had a fluid build-up in her brain, causing her death. Leighton handled the case in Chicago and recovered $4.3 million for her family. In Texas he obtained $1 million for the victim of a botched weight loss surgery. Another of his Central Florida clients had a wrong leg surgery by a surgeon who had just made the same mistake on another patient a year earlier. In a record-setting case here, Leighton represented an Altamonte Springs girl who sustained brain damage at birth from a botched delivery. After years of delays and numerous appeals, Leighton convinced a Sanford jury to award $24 million in what was the largest malpractice verdict in Seminole county history. Recently he recovered $9 million for a woman who suffered brain damage from an anesthesia mistake and two years ago he won a $24 million wrongful death verdict in Orange County.

Leighton is most concerned by studies which show that medical errors are killing 200,000 to 400,000 people a year in America. To demonstrate the point, he recently published an article about why people are safer on a highway filled with drunk drivers than in a hospital. 15 years ago Leighton and a dozen of the nation’s top medical malpractice lawyers formed the Cooperative Association of Medical Malpractice Attorneys. Leighton is the author of a 2 volume text and has written numerous book chapters and articles. He has lectured in over a dozen states, including, The Association of Trial Lawyers of America’s “Litigating Catastrophically Injured Infant Cases” and “Holding the Hospital Accountable” seminars. He recently spoke to a different group – an association of health underwriters. His topic: “Medical Malpractice - What You Don’t Know May Kill You.” Leighton has been selected for Florida SuperLawyers (6 years as a top 100 SuperLawyer in Florida), Florida Trend magazine’s “Florida Legal Elite” and The Best Lawyers in America. He serves as the Chairman of the Academy of Trial Advocacy, a national invitationonly association of some of the nation’s leading catastrophic injury lawyers, and is on the Executive Committee of the National College of Advocacy. He received his law and undergraduate degrees with honors from the University of Florida. When he is not fighting for victims of medical mistakes, he tries to find time to ski, bike and enjoy classic cars. <

Tom Dukes, one of Mr. Martinez’ partners, said that Ralph has mentored many of Orlando’s finest medical negligence attorneys. The Orange County Bar Association has honored Mr. Martinez with the Bill Trickel Professionalism Award, a coveted recognition and lifetime achievement. A Cuban refugee before he became a proud naturalized citizen, Mr. Martinez has lived the American dream. When he arrived in the U.S. at the age of 12 he did not speak English. He came as part of Operation Pedro Pan where 14,500 children escaped from Cuba without their parents at the height of the Cold War. He learned English, put himself through school, graduated from the University of Florida with a journalism degree, and obtained his Juris Doctor at Florida State University. Mr. Martinez said he was one of the few Gators happy with FSU winning this year’s BCS Championship! Mr. Martinez was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the

U.S. Senate to serve as one of 10 voting delegates to the U.N. General Assembly in 2002 where he served for a year while maintaining an active litigation practice in Orlando. In 2008 he was appointed by President Bush and again confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a commissioner of the U.S. Dept of Justice Foreign Claims Commission where he, in a non-adversarial manner, adjudicated claims of U.S. citizens against foreign countries. In the claims against Libya he adjudicated over $300 million of compensation to victims of 11 terrorist acts sponsored by Libya in the previous 30 years. Mr. Martinez lectured at the 2005 College for the Judiciary on the subject of Medical Malpractice and in 1996 at the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges on the same subject. He has taught at the prestigious IADC (International Association of Defense Counsel) Trial Academy at Stanford University and the Florida Trial Academy at the University of Florida. He served on the Valencia Community College Board of Directors for 8 years and the Board of Trustees of the University of Richmond for 4 years. When asked about running for office, he said no—he would leave that to brother Mel and nephew John! Mr. Martinez is very involved in community activities including the Central Florida Fair and the Central Florida YMCA where he served as Chairman of the Metropolitan Board of Directors and is active on the Camp Wewa and Metro Board. He also serves on the CNL Bank Board. He and his wife Becky have been married for 30 years. They have 3 grown children and a granddaughter. He has practiced law at McEwan, Martinez & Dukes, P.A. since 1981 at 108 E. Central Boulevard, Orlando, FL <

KEITH R. MITNIK Senior Trial Counsel For Morgan & Morgan

> Keith Mitnik was born and raised in Eustis, Florida and has practiced law in Central Florida for 30 years. He is a nationally recognized teacher on unique trial techniques he has developed. He is regularly invited as a featured speaker by trial lawyer organizations all over the country and all around the state of Florida. As Senior Trial Counsel For Morgan & Morgan, the largest personal injury law firm in America, Mr. Mitnik practically lives in courtrooms trying cases statewide and nationally. He is licensed in Florida, Tennessee and Kentucky. He is Board Certified as a specialist in the handling of civil jury trials.

In the last five years Mr. Mitnik has a long list of verdicts where the damages awarded by the jury were at least a million dollars, including 26 million, 1 million, 40 million, 3 million, 18.8 million, 1.3 million, 90 million, 1.1 million, 13 million and, most recently, a 5.3 million dollar verdict already this year. He has been honored as a member of the Florida Legal Elite, Orlando Business Journal top lawyers, Florida’s “Super Lawyers”, Orlando’s Best Lawyers, and Best Lawyers in America and is listed in Martindale’s Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers.

the years involving high profile cases in which he was personally involved, such as the suit against Backstreet Boys’ promotor Lou Perlman, a case in which former Harlem Globetrotters, including Curly Neal, Meadowlark Lemon and Marquis Haines, sued the Globetrotter organization, and the civil suit against Casey Anthony. Mr. Mitnik has been interviewed by Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes regarding a prominent defamation suit he handled against CNN and Time Magazine. A few years ago, he was the subject of a front page feature article in the Orlando Sentinel, profiling “Mitlock”, his nickname in legal circles (a reference to the old TV show Matlock). While Mr. Mitnik handles personal injury cases of all kinds, and business lawsuits, he has always had a special interest and focus on medical negligence cases. They are complicated cases, the lawyers who defend them are some of the best in the business. He feels called to use his gifts and talents to level the field on behalf of patients who have suffered as a result of doctors failing to do the basic things that should have been done for patient safety. He is very selective in what cases he takes to a jury, but when he does, he does it with passion and purpose. Mr. Mitnik says, “Most doctors exercise reasonable care and will never have to face him. but those few who don’t do their jobs right, should be held accountable. If they won’t take responsibility voluntarily I aim to impose it on them in a court of law.” <
