NIAGARA FALLS WHERE ADVENTURE COMES NATURALLY!
No passport is needed to experience nature in its most beautiful form! By Riesa Pascal Photos By Destination Niagara USA
28
| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
We’ve all heard of Niagara Falls, but few know that this
destination has so much more to offer visitors than its namesake tourist attraction. I used to be one of those unaware individuals, but I recently had the opportunity to go on my own Niagara Falls excursion and now I’ve been left with the seemingly impossible task of finding the words to share this great adventure with you. I’ve had experience writing dozens of travel articles, but today I was completely and irrevocably stumped as to where to start this particular story. How does one even begin to describe the amazing and breathtaking beauty of Niagara Falls USA? Do I start with the obvious and gush over their magnificent falls, or do I take the path less traveled and tell you about the destination’s many other hidden gems? I spent several long minutes staring at a blank word document as these questions spun around my head. Finally, I decided to just start writing down the first thoughts that came to my mind in a feeble attempt to retell my once-in-a-lifetime adventure in Niagara Falls USA.
TRAVEL ‘N STYLE
Upon landing at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, I met up with my travel companions and enjoyed a brief, scenic ride to the Downtown area of Niagara Falls, New York. Our very first stop of the day was Third Street Retreat Eatery and Pub, a fun and casual dining joint. The popular hang out spot was filled with personality and great conversations as we enjoyed a one-of-a-kind local dining experience with amazing homestyle food. The eatery was the ideal spot to fuel up on some delicious grub in preparation for a busy day in Niagara Falls State Park. With awe-inspiring scenery, thrilling attractions, interactive exhibits, miles of hiking trails, and delectable dining options, Niagara Falls State Park is an action-packed experience! We kicked off our own adventure with the Maid of the Mist tour, a favorite local attraction for more than 150 years. Generations of visitors have described the tour as one of the highlights of their trip and it doesn’t take long to see why. After receiving a souvenir rain poncho to wear aboard the double-decker tour boat, the Maid of the Mist ferried us past the base of the American Falls, and onto the basin of Horseshoe Falls. The dramatic passage led us through massive rock formations and the powerful waterfall
whitewater. Needless to say, we returned to shore with a newfound appreciation for ponchos (you’ll definitely need it!) and more importantly, for the power and grandeur of Niagara Falls. As if it wasn’t enough for us to “explore the roar” from the Maid of the Mist, my companions and I also had the opportunity to experience the power of the Falls from the Cave of the Winds. Before getting up close and personal with the Falls, we traveled through the World Changed Here Pavilion which educates guests on the rich history of the Falls that truly changed the entire world. After being outfitted in souvenir sandals and more ponchos, we descended 175 feet into the astonishing Cave of the Winds. A series of wooden walkways led us within feet of the violent, yet majestic Bridal Veil Falls. I can’t tell you what an incredibly surreal feeling it is to stand on that deck and realize that nowhere else on earth will get you closer to Niagara Falls. For the more adventurous guests, a little further up the wooden walkways is the astonishing “Hurricane Deck” where revelers are surrounded by tropical storm like conditions—even on the calmest of days! Poncho or not, prepare to get wet!
Without a doubt, only accomodations at the region’s premier destination resort could follow such a powerful and energetic start to my Niagara Falls adventure. Fortunately, I experienced exactly this for two glorious nights all while being just minutes from Niagara Falls State Park. The Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino is a magnificent property that welcomes more than 8 million visitors annually and I am certain that I will be one of those returning guests in the near future. The Four Diamond-rated luxury hotel tower rises 26 stories above the city, offering guests 604 deluxe rooms and suites awash in unmatched comfort. My own such suite was synonymous with luxury from the moment I walked into my room. In addition to enjoying various upscale amenities, I was sure to set aside time to enjoy my favorite feature of the regal room: A sparkling jacuzzi located in the center of the suite that overlooked unparalleled views of the city and even the grand Niagara River. Of course a stay at Seneca Niagara isn’t complete without a trip to their worldrenowned casino and I was not disappointed! The 147,000 square feet of gaming space is the TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM | 29

ideal spot for guests to enjoy the hottest new slots and all of their favorite table games. With more than 3,600 slot machines and 90 table games to choose from, there was truly a game for everyone. Perched over the casino floor is the resort’s award-winning steakhouse The Western Door. There we enjoyed a menu of the finest steaks, chops, poultry, seafood, and other treasures that have made The Western Door the premier steakhouse in Niagara Falls. The culinary wonders at Seneca Niagara span the spectrum from authentic Italian cooking at la Cascata to thick, juicy burgers at Blues Burger Bar. With ten in-house dining locations available for guests, Seneca Niagara can truly satisfy every palate day or night. As darkness fell across the city, I ventured back out into Niagara Falls State Park to enjoy a different view of the Falls. Every evening at dusk, special lights housed around the Falls come together to create an incredible, multicoloured water and light show. The following morning, we pampered ourselves silly with a gentle and calming massage at Seneca Niagara’s full-service spa and salon. The only thing that could compliment a peaceful morning of self-indulgence and relaxation is the ultimate beverage of relaxation—wine, of course! With that, we were off to the Niagara Wine Trail 30
| TAMPASTYLEMAGAZINE.COM
located along Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario just minutes from the Falls. The cool climate region of Niagara allows their vineyards to enjoy the second longest growing season for grapes in New York State. Along with the moderate climate, the character of the local soils is ideal for producing exquisite European vinifera wines such as Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc which all thrive in the region. From Freedom Run Winery and Arrowhead Spring Vineyards to Becker Farms & Vizcarra Vineyards, each stop on the trail offered us a diverse selection of awardwinning wines to please every palate from the novice to the most discerning wine connoisseur. An elegant and adventurous dinner at Carmelo’s proved to be the perfect close to our second day as we relished in creative, seasonal fare in an intimate setting. The following morning, my companions and I enjoyed a mini hiking trail from Schoellkopf Power Station that led to awe-inspiring views of the Niagara Gorge. I knew my return flight home was just hours away, but I didn’t have a care in the world as I stood there breathing in the most refreshing air and memorizing the magnificent scenery as far as my eyes could see so as to not forgot a single detail. How anything could be both heart-stopping and heart-stirring is
beyond me, but Niagara Falls USA made me experience all those feelings and more from day one and that feeling never stopped. Needless to say, there is plenty to do in and around Niagara Falls State Park and I barely scratched the surface. I implore you to come and see for yourself! Embark on a scenic wine tour where you will meet inspiring and passionate individuals who have dedicated their lives to producing the highest quality beverage. Take a break from the wine and enjoy a savory lunch of wood-fired pizza at Woodcock Brother Brewery. Book a suite at Seneca Niagara Resort and enjoy luxurious accommodations, exciting retail outlets and thrilling casino games without ever stepping foot off property. Experience the beauty of the Falls from above on a helicopter tour and then get drenched below on the Hurricane Deck. When the temperatures drop and the crowds thin, Niagara Falls State Park becomes even more magical with trees that sparkle and views that take your breath away so don’t let winter weather deter you from booking your own adventure today! Plan a week, a weekend or even a day to come experience nature in its most beautiful form. Visit www.NiagaraFallsUSA.com to learn more.

I know what you’re thinking, what is microneedling? Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is using fine needles to create hundreds of tiny, invisible puncture wounds in the top layer of your skin. I know, it sounds scary. But it’s actually painless and very effective! Research studies have shown that wound healing can stimulate the production of proteins that are responsible for the development of new hair follicles. It can stimulate blood circulation and increase nutrients to your follicles, resulting in new hair growth. You can get this procedure done by a trained aesthetician, dermatologist, or plastic surgeon, or at home using a dermaroller (a small, handheld roller coated in tiny needles).
How to use a dermaroller
• Massage the hair restoration product directly onto the scalp to ensure full coverage. • Use the dermaroller beginning at the front of the head at the hairline and work your way down the back of the head. • Repeat this process until you have covered all areas. • Roll each area around 10-15 times to ensure sufficiant coverage and absorption of the product. • Apply the hair restoration spray to the treatment area again. Massage this gently into the scalp. It may seem a little complicated at first, but once you do this once or twice, you will be able to do this process blindfolded. A dermaroller has a lot of uses! It’s not just for hair growth; it is also very common to do microneedling on your face! This helps to reverse and prevent signs of aging and is good for dark spots, acne scars, and much more!

A trend that we are seeing is having personalized handbags and luggage pieces. And it’s not just your initials. At first this was seen mainly in higher end designers, such as Louis Vuitton (most popular), Goyard Paris, etc. Now we are starting to see more affordable designers adding this trend into their collections! The items that are being customized are mainly handbags and small leather goods. But also depending on the designer you can even get customized carry-on luggage and duffle bags. what you can actually put and how many things you can put on it, but usually brands will have a variety of “patches” or stickers” to choose from. For example, some of the patches are of different cities from around the world or famous hotels, animals, or logos. You can also just put your name or initials and call it a day. You can go in store or do it online. This is a nice twist to a handbag or luggage item and definitely a good way to remember your trip!
SLIPPERS AT

Everyone has seen Gucci’s famous loafers. They are a trend that everyone has been loving lately. A lot of people are liking to pair a casual shoe (like fluffy slippers) with a dressed up outfit. People are wearing them to dinner, lounges and bars, and of course you can wear them casually too. But it’s funny that a slipper that people would think to be worn only at home have become a huge fashion trend! And we love it!

Radical Celebrity Stars Spark Anti-Makeup Movement By Georyana Santos
The fame life — luxurious cars, red carpet events, and riches. Although fame promises celebrities the glory, it seems to leave out the pressure that comes with it: lack of privacy, paparazzi, and the burden to look 100% flawless. In Hollywood, female celebrities constantly undergo pressure to appear pimple-free, so much that in the past year, a no-makeup movement has immersed. Prominent stars such as Alessia Cara and Alicia Keys have lashed out against Hollywood beauty standards, provoking a natural, bare-faced trend. Which celebrity star will be next in joining?
Alessia Cara The anti-makeup movement is nothing without Canadian singer-songwriter Alessia Cara. The 21-year-old soulful voice, who never wears makeup, gave a striking performance last year in the 2017 VMAs, leaving the crowd speechless. As Cara performed “Scars To Your Beautiful,” the singer’s fiery red lips matched her floor-length gown. Her hair, perfectly styled in a straight, short bob, represented the clean and sleek look she was expected to have in front of the spotlight. That is, until moments passed within her performance and the wig was ripped from her head, revealing
Cara’s natural curls. Seconds later, the singer wiped off her red lips and makeup, leaving her with a natural look. The act represented Cara’s song message: you don’t have to change anything because you’re beautiful just the way you are. Cara, who believes in living an authentic lifestyle, empowers her teenage fans to stay true to themselves by remaining makeupfree.
Alicia Keys The latest celebrity to go without makeup is Keys. Tired of covering up, the R&B singer-songwriter cut off the makeup last year after she realized her life became consumed with what other people thought of her. Keys explained she was tired of feeling enslaved to public opinions. “I don’t want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, and not my emotional growth.” the singer said in a statement. The star is now team #nomakeup. Keys has inspired a lineup of women to feel free and natural.

“LUST FOR LIFE HAS ALL THE MAKINGS OF A CLASSIC DEL REY RECORD, FROM THE USUAL CINEMATIC WALL OF SOUND TO HER SIGNATURE WARBLE.”

DON’T MISS THE BEAT
LA to the Moon Tour By Courtney Caggiano On February 2, Lana Del Rey is bringing her LA to the Moon Tour to Orlando’s Amway Center, on the heels of her most recent album Lust for Life—a coming-ofage, cosmic masterpiece whirling us through space and time with a melodic, centrifugal pull. Caught in a romance with the past but in love with the future, Del Rey’s album is a contribution that pushes her moody and brooding fans—and even her melancholy self—to find a new, grown-up perspective and embrace the joys of the moment. Since her 2012 breakthrough with Born to Die, Del Rey has captured the hearts of star-crossed lovers with her vintage Hollywood glamour, Marilyn Monroe pout, and babydoll eyes looking longingly to the decades of old. Her sweetly-sad aesthetic became fully-formed with her later albums, 2014’s Ultraviolence and 2015’s Honeymoon, each track dripping with the nectar of nostalgia that enticed the ears of this millennium’s throwback youth. Lust for Life has all the makings of a classic Del Rey record, from the usual cinematic wall of sound to her signature warble. But to the pure in heart, there’s something different in Lust for Life—something Del Rey didn’t have before. Del Rey has become the queen of cool to hipster kids seeking an escape from a world that doesn’t know what it really is, temporarily saving them from an over-cultured wasteland with her wistful songs of yesteryears. Yet lullabying her fans to sleep from the current day could only get her so far. In Lust for Life, Del Rey chooses not to swim aimlessly in the woe-is-me sentimentalities of
nostalgia; she uses that nostalgia as her compass to carve a path in the uncharted territory of the future. The album’s first track, “Love,” shows a Del Rey full of ambition, leading her generation with a hopeful note of encouragement. Directing her anthem to the young fans of “vintage music,” she sings, “You’re part of the past, but now you’re the future.” Reminding her listeners that, even in the changing times, it’s enough “to be young and in love,” Del Rey gives a view of love that differs from what we have seen in her previous albums: love is the force that will equip her for the uncertainties of tomorrow. Lust for Life’s title track is Del Rey’s bold step into that world of tomorrow. The singer duets with chart-topper The Weeknd, showing that she is more than eager to stand beside Hollywood’s musical elite, rather than reign alone in her unique yet indulgent corner. Still, there is no lack of vintage appeal; “Beautiful People Beautiful Problems” features Stevie Nicks, perhaps a move motivated by Del Rey’s aim to fling her icons and influences onto the scene to bring purpose and perspective to the cultural experience of her fans. Del Rey also invited John Lennon’s son, Sean Ono Lennon, to sing with her on “Tomorrow Never Came,” a tender folk ballad that balances Del Rey’s vision of unity and progression. And to tie it all together—as every worthy album should—Del Rey’s album cover shows the beauty shining a truly happy smile above the words “Lust for Life,” as if to say how sweet life can be when it is lived, not just remembered.

Celebrities Who Own
Private Islands By Riesa Pascal
Meet the stars who can vacation in their own private paradise! As if a collection of fancy cars, yachts, private planes, and other expensive toys weren’t enough, some celebrities also feel the need to purchase their own little kingdom in the form of a private island! From business investments to paparazzi-free getaways, here are eight celebrities who purchased their own slice of paradise.

CELEBRITY SOUP
CELINE DION – ILE GAGNON, QUEBEC The Canadian songstress owns a private island, Ile Gagnon, located between Boisbriand and Laval. The best feature of this island is the Laval mansion which she and her late-husband Rene Angelil had custom-built in 2001. The 24,000 square-foot home has six bedrooms, nine bathrooms, a stone wine cellar with tasting area, an elevator, an in-ground pool, a grand staircase and even a games room. The mansion was the most expensive property for sale in the Montreal area until it sold in 2016 for $25.5 million. NICHOLAS CAGE – LEAF CAY, BAHAMAS In 2006, Nicolas Cage purchased Leaf Cay, an Exumas in the Bahamas, for $3 million. Today, the 35 acre property can be yours for a cool $8.5 million. The island features three unspoilt white sandy beaches, protected deep water access suitable for anchorage and docking of large yachts, and decent elevations. There is also a small pond on the island that would make an ideal private harbour if the new owners wish to create one! JOHNNY DEPP – LITTLE HALLS POND CAY, BAHAMAS Johnny Depp first laid eyes on Little Halls Pond Cay while shooting Pirates of the Caribbean in 2004. He snapped up the 45 acres of private island that same year for $3.6 million. The island is located in the south of the Bahamas and has a palm tree-lined lagoon, solar-powered houses and six beaches named after Depp’s children and former partner Vanessa Paradis. EDDIE MURPHY – ROOSTER CAY, BAHAMAS In 2007, one of Hollywood’s highest paid actors bought Rooster Cay island in the Bahamas for $15 million. The 15+ acre island is located off the coast of Nassau in the Long Cay region. There are reportedly no such plans of resort development even though it would appear to be an ideal place for such recreation. According to Private Island Magazine, the comedian used to own another Bahamian cay called Pearl Island. SHAKIRA – BONDS CAY, BAHAMAS In 2011, the Colombian singer invested $16 million in a 700-acre island with Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters and Spanish singer Alejandro Sanz. Bonds Cay already boasted a hotel and 18-hole golf course at the time of purchase, but the trio were reported to have plans to develop it as both an artists’ retreat and a destination for the rich and famous with boutique hotels, luxury condominiums and private beaches. LEONARDO DICAPRIO – BLACKADORE CAYE, BELIZE The Wolf of Wall Street star bought a 2.2 miles long island off the coast of Belize for $1.75 million in 2005. Leonardo is an outspoken environmental voice and has plans to develop the 104 acres island into an eco-resort and wildlife preserve. The resort will feature 36 resort bungalows and 36 estate homes, all of which will be powered by 100% renewable energy harvested from solar panels. Even rainwater will be collected and filtered on-site to meet the resort’s water needs. MEL GIBSON – MAGO ISLAND, FIJI Mel Gibson reportedly paid $15 million for his Fiji island in 2004, just after the release of his film The Passion of the Christ. The island is practically its own country at 5,400 acres, which also makes it one of the largest private islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. Mago Island is relatively undeveloped at present and inhabited only by a few Fijian caretakers. TYLER PERRY – WHITE BAY CAY, BAHAMAS In 2009, Tyler Perry purchased White Bay Cay in The Exuma Cays in the Bahamas for $6.4 million to celebrate his 40th birthday. The award-winning actor even took pilot lessons so he could fly his own private plane to the property which consist of a 25-acre island and a seven-acre island relatively close by. He spoke of the purchase with People saying, “I’m a loner by nature, so when I’m out there on these islands, I just feel like the only person in the world.”

THE
CARIBBEAN IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS By Riesa Pascal

TRAVEL ‘N STYLE
Why you should plan to visit the Caribbean in 2018! As a person of Caribbean descent and an avid visitor to the islands, the Caribbean is a destination that is very near and dear to my heart. Considering the fact that nearly 30 million tourists visit the Caribbean annually, there is a very high possibility that it holds a special place in your heart as well. Now this beautiful region is greatly in need of our love and support, but I think it’s the kind of help that you’re going to have a great time providing. Grab your bathing suit, dust off your sunglasses and dig out your passport—it’s time to plan your 2018 vacation to the Caribbean. Nearly six months after the islands took a harsh beating from hurricanes Irma and Maria, the question for many concerned vacationers is still this: When can I expect to travel to the region again and which island’s are open for tourism? Believe it or not, right now is actually the perfect time to book your 2018 tropical getaway! Though there are parts of the Caribbean that are still in the midst of recovery operations, many islands were untouched by either storm and most that took a hit have resumed tourism and are welcoming visitors with wide open arms. Some islands, such as The Virgin Islands and Barbuda, suffered more significant damage and are in need of many repairs before they are fully up and running, but take heart. Rapid progress has already been made in many places that were devastated by the catastrophic storms including Puerto Rico, which is as enchanting as ever. As a guest of the San Juan Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino in 2017, I was thrilled to learn that the location is currently open for tourism and ready to welcome guests back for a fun and relaxing stay. Here are examples of just a few other Caribbean destinations and properties that are open for business and ready to welcome you:
St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino
The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa
St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino St. Kitts Marriott Resort recently completed extensive renovations that include all guest rooms and suites, and a brand new lobby experience with a Marriott Great Room. The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba New York City’s famed Casa Nonna restaurant is excited to open its second location at The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba in early 2018. The Westin Grand Cayman Seven Mile Beach Resort & Spa Westin Grand Cayman is welcoming travelers to their stunning property with the completion of a $50 million, two-phase renovation. The Reef Atlantis, Bahamas Visitors to The Reef Atlantis will experience a newly updated, Bahamian culture-infused resort, sitting on five miles of pristine beach.
The Ritz-Carlton, Aruba
As I mentioned, this brief list barely scratches the surface of Caribbean tourism news! Despite a false perception that the Caribbean region is closed to tourism, the affected islands are hard at work rebuilding and tourists are slowly returning. Best of all, you can actively help the Caribbean in this process through your own travels. Take that picturesque, relaxing beach vacation you’ve been daydreaming about and know your stay is helping the islands and the locals to get back on their feet and rebuild the many destinations we’ve come to know and love. Curious to know more about which islands are open for business? Visit the Caribbean Tourism Organization or the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association websites for more! The Reef Atlantis, Bahamas

2018 MILLENIAL PINK: It is here to stay
11. Add pops of color Let’s establish one thing: the Millenial Pink refuses to go away. Even if you haven’t heard of this type of pink or didn’t know it went by this particular name, chances are you’ve still seen it. Take two seconds to imagine Barbie’s pink and now, tone it down approximately two notches. You have the color everyone began calling Millenial Pink in the summer of 2016. Although forecasts for 2017’s fashion trends implied that the hue would make a grand exit, it is quite the contrary.
DARK WOOD & LIGHTS
Perfect for small spaces
This season is welcoming dark wood into its menu of interior design trends. Throw in some light brown colors of natural wood to embrace a modern and appealing look inside of your home. Chocolate brown hues are equipped to give a touch of comfort and richness to any space. Combined with a bright, light design, this interior look shows off beauty and luxury.
58
| STYLETOME.COM
It is 2018 and the color is still reigning more than ever - just as it is and even as a neutral shade too. Blush pink, a calmer version of tint, is now taking over with a serene effect. It is unlike the Millenial Pink that stands as a statement shade. The color goes perfectly with a mix of grays, browns, and creams. Prepare yourself to see it in just about any tangible item. It is coming out in accessories, clothes, appliances, textiles and pretty much any product your eyes perceive.

IN THE KNOW
THE INS & OUTS OF TITLE IX SEXUAL HARASSMENT & SEXUAL VIOLENCE CASES IN SCHOOLS With sexual harassment and sexual violence matters dominating much of the headlines of late, one important area of concern has not been given the attention which it deserves. Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”), is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities. All public and private elementary and secondary schools, school districts, colleges, and universities receiving any federal funds must comply with Title IX. Under Title IX, discrimination on the basis of sex can include sexual harassment or sexual violence, such as rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual coercion. When a student alleges a complaint stating that they are a victim of sexual harassment and/or sexual violence, the school must respond “promptly and effectively” and begin its investigation. If the school becomes aware of conduct that would constitute sexual harassment or violence, they must act regardless of the student’s desire. Every school must have a written procedure they make available to the parties involved. The complainant must prove his or her case by a “preponderance of the evidence” standard. This means that they must convince the Title IX investigator that the misconduct is more likely to have occurred than not. This is not a very high standard (think 50.1 percent chance the claimant is being truthful) and is much lower than the “beyond a reasonable doubt” standard of proof used in criminal court. One can be accused civilly with this standard but not be prosecuted criminally. While the respondent is given a summary list of allegations, he or she is not entitled to see the written statement of the claimant or given all of the details of the accusation. Even worse, most schools merely have the investigator interview all the relevant witnesses and review any items of evidence submitted and have the investigator make a decision based on what they have seen and heard. In these cases, there is not a formal “hearing” where the respondent can hear the details of the accusation or cross-examine witnesses, pointing out inconsistencies with their prior testimony or with testimony from other witnesses.
attorney or advisor. This means that the attorney or advisor can prepare the respondent for his or her interview but it is the respondent that must answer all questions, assuming that they decide to participate in the interview process to begin with. Because the claimant has the burden to prove the charge, it is theoretically possible for the respondent to win the “hearing” without participating, but choosing not to participate severely limits the chances of success as the investigator will only have one side of the story to consider. A respondent may choose to not participate if there are criminal proceedings pending or they believe charges may be forthcoming in the future. All witnesses appear voluntarily and neither the claimant nor respondent have the power to subpoena witnesses or documents, depose witnesses, or to submit written questions for witnesses. Once the investigator has reviewed all of the evidence, they generate a report and if any of the allegations were found to be true, the school imposes a sanction. The sanction can include a no contact order, the respondent changing classes, moving to a new residence hall, suspension, or expulsion. The appellate process will vary from school to school, but must be the same for both the claimant and the respondent. Title IX investigations are very different from court cases and while the respondent can face severe sanctions, he or she is not entitled to the same due process requirements that the court cases give to a defendant. It’s dangerous out there. More injustices occur with sex related cases than with any other. More innocent people are falsely accused and more guilty people beat charges than any other type of case as it’s often a swearing contest between two people and the subjective evaluation as to which is the most believable. Times have changed and the public’s understanding as to what is permissible and actionable will keep this issue in the forefront for a long time to come. Eric Barker, Partner with NeJame Law & Mark NeJame jointly contributed to this article.
Additionally, most schools require the respondent to speak for him or herself and not through their

ENJOY PUPPY LOVE THIS VALENTINE’S DAY By Yngrid Lindores
Valentine’s Day is coming up, and if you’re fortunate enough to have a pet bestie by your side, then you already have the best valentine around. Between all of life’s surprises, milestones, and challenges, don’t forget about the canine companion that has been your most loyal supporter and number one fan. Here are some ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with the one who has always shown you unconditional love.

Pamper your pup valentine:
Paw print party:
Treat your special canine companion to a little spa time. Try a do-it-yourself facility, which can be found within local pet stores and speciality salons. This way you and your pup can enjoy some quality bonding time. If you and your valentine are more of the homebody variety, then try booking a mobile grooming van, which will come right to your home.
You can preserve a special part of your pet by creating a paw print, in clay. You can find handprinting kits at a local craft store. While you’re at it, why not make an event of it and invite fellow pet owners and their furry companions over to join in the fun? Go ahead and share the love. Pet play dates are always fun in general for everyone involved, however, this event will have the added benefit of attendees walking away with a little keepsake. Plus, who knows, maybe there will be a love connection between pets? Or between pet owners? Cupid is still on duty after all.
Take a trip together:
Surprise your canine valentine with a trip to a beautiful trail or dog park. It can be a standby favorite of his, or the two of you could try out a new destination together. In any case, be sure to pack plenty of water and doggie treats. Maybe you can even make a pit stop at a local dog bakery beforehand and pick up a few speciality items, just for the occasion.

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LAW Special Promotional Feature
IT MIGHT BE A NEW TAX CODE BUT IT STILL HAS THE SAME PENALTIES In late December, Congress passed sweeping changes to the U.S. income tax laws. There was much debate as to who would really benefit under the new tax code but no discussion concerning the continued emphasis on criminal prosecution of tax crimes. While the tax code may have reduced the number of tax brackets, the complexity of tax returns still poses problems for many. Accountants, tax-return preparers, and large tax-preparation companies will continue helping prepare returns.

The U.S. government contends that we have a voluntary tax system, however, if the Government believes a citizen willfully failed to abide by the voluntary system, consequences include significant civil penalties and time in prison. There are numerous tax crimes set forth by the Federal Government including: tax evasion, false statements on tax returns, failure to timely file tax returns, and hiding assets subject to levy by the IRS. In determining whether a person has committed a tax crime, one of the major factors considered by IRS criminal investigators is whether the person acted willfully. In a tax prosecution, willfulness has a specific meaning and requires the Government to prove that the taxpayer knew what the law required and intentionally chose to not comply. Given the complexity of the tax laws, it is easy to understand how a person may prepare a tax return that is incorrect but not willfully false. In bringing a criminal case, the IRS usually considers conduct that is based on more than one year. For example, charging an individual with tax evasion for underreporting income will often involve an investigation that spans 3 to 5 years. Each year in which tax evasion occurs has a maximum term of imprisonment of five years. Therefore, if a person is charged with tax evasion for three separate tax years and convicted of all three counts, a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison is possible.
The failure to timely file a tax return can be a civil or criminal matter depending upon how the IRS interprets the facts. Each year that a person fails to timely file a tax return is a separate crime punishable by imprisonment up to one year. Therefore, if a person is prosecuted for failure to timely file tax returns for three years and convicted, a maximum sentence of three years in prison could be imposed. The IRS often begins an investigation through its civil branch which seeks to ensure that the correct amount of tax is reported and paid. An IRS audit can result in the IRS finding errors which will justify the imposition of significant civil penalties in addition to the correct amount of tax that should have been disclosed and paid. There are multiple civil penalties, the highest penalty being an additional 75% of any unpaid tax. All taxpayers have rights when dealing with the Internal Revenue Service. Whether an IRS auditor, IRS tax collector or criminal agent is involved, every taxpayer has a right to representation. IRS agents, both civil and criminal, like all people, can make mistakes which may have a devastating impact on the taxpayer in the form of large civil penalties or criminal prosecution. While the new tax laws are touted as being simpler, they are not so simple as to avoid the risk of a person being subjected to wrongful prosecution, incarceration, or assessment of improper taxes and penalties. The hiring of a well-experienced attorney, while costly, may in the long run be economical when compared to the alternatives. Likewise, not having experienced legal representation when a civil or criminal IRS agent comes knocking at your door can impact your liberty. As long as the United States continues to impose the threat of criminal sanctions in relation to the U.S. “voluntary tax system”, citizens must take care to ensure that they are protected against IRS mistakes even under the new tax laws.

pediatric pulmonary and sleep medicine practice in Florida, with its own behavioral sleep medicine specialist. It offers a wide range of sleep services: sleep evaluations, sleep studies, psychology and cognitive behavioral services. It has the most expansive network of office locations in Florida with 15 offices spanning from the east to west coast. Each office offers full pulmonary function testing, sleep testing, apnea monitoring, allergy testing and immunotherapy. In addition to consultation services, my goal has always been to make each office independent and able to offer all the services we can without patients needing to travel out of their areas for service. The practice manages conditions such as asthma, chronic cough, allergic rhinitis, pneumonia, sleep apnea, insomnia and narcolepsy. In addition, the practice offers inpatient services
at five Children’s Hospitals in Florida including: Florida Hospital for Children, Arnold Palmer Hospital, St Joseph’s Hospital Tampa, All Children’s Hospital, St Pete and St Mary’s Hospital West Palm Beach. The unique spread of the practice allows us to maintain continuity of care across a large part of the State of Florida. Basically our patients can move freely across the state and not worry about pulmonary or sleep care. DR. AJAYI’S PHILOSOPHY: “A great
physician should be kind, caring and a good listener. Above all he or she should always offer hope, support and should never kill the hopes of the child or parent. My job above all, is to heal patients and their families in any way that I can. Anything less would be unacceptable. ” THE RIGHT DIAGNOSIS: Every child should
have a right to an evaluation before they are subjected to treatment. No child should ever be treated for sleep apnea without having a clear diagnosis. It is important to understand the severity of sleep apnea, the benefits and the risks related to treatment, before subjecting a child to surgery or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). Conditions such as sleep apnea and sleep fragmentation can mimic behavioral disorders associated with ADHD; hence early identification and treatment is important to avoid stigmatizing a child. When treating a child with conditions such as asthma, it is important to correctly diagnose and characterize the severity of the condition. Asthma affects how children sleep, play and learn. It is my goal to make sure kids can do all of these things with ease.
IN THE COMMUNITY: It is my mission
to develop a relationship with educational institutions in Central Florida. I emphasize the importance of consistent sleep/wake schedules, teaching school staff and families about how to facilitate the development of independent sleep skills in children of all ages, and quickly and accurately identifying children who are at-risk for sleep disorders. Teachers have a unique ability to observe students on a daily basis and are often the first to become aware of behavioral, learning, and emotional symptoms that may be a sign of inadequate or disrupted sleep. Teachers are our “first responders” and we are working to build awareness around making sleep a priority and increasing awareness of the critical importance of sleep in our daily lives. HOBBIES:
• Playing tennis • Watching soccer • Listening to jazz.

WHAT YOUR BROW GAME says about you!
In a culture where we are taught to embrace masculinity, men who pluck their brows aren’t necessarily the most appealing. Society has created a fine line. A man cannot perform “feminine” functions without being judged or misinterpreted. But why should men be judged for keeping up with their personal maintenance?
Quality Shave Fulton & Roark’s shaving cream is your go-to product when it’s time to get messy. Crafted to leave your skin gently caressed and moisturized, the cream is set to create a quality shave. It contains a nourishing blend of avocado, tea tree, jojoba and citrus oils. $16 / Available at Fultonandroark.com

Personal grooming is important. Aside from appearing clean and presentable for work, hygiene is important to care for every day. The neatness of our appearance says a lot about our character. Even though eyebrow grooming for women means tweezing, shaping, and creating high, dramatic arches, it does not mean men have to endure the same pain. Sometimes all it takes is a bit of trimming or plucking a couple of hairs. Overall, eyebrow maintenance is just as important for men as it is for women. Here we’ve gathered a couple of tips and tricks to make sure your brow game is strong. 1. Tweeze in a Breeze Purchase a good pair of tweezers and make the job a lot less easier. If you’re not into waxing, just stick to what you’re most comfortable with. Tweezers are excellent at grasping those fine hairs without letting them slide off.
2. Wax and Relax You don’t always have to tweeze your hairs. Eyebrow waxing is another option that exists for men. It’s faster than tweezing and it provides the hairs with a little definition. It also gets the strands that tweezing often misses. When booking an appointment, make sure to find someone experienced in eyebrow waxing for men. 3. Don’t Be Afraid of Thick Eyebrows Thick eyebrows do not mean bushy and untamed. If you naturally have thick brows, keep them groomed. Large brows balance greatly with other facial features such as large eyes and lips. 4. Trim, Trim, and Trim Plucking is just as fine as tweezing but don’t leave the job halfway done. Although trimmers don’t shape the outline of your eyebrow, they’re lifesavers at controlling the depth of those hairs. Use this as part of your eyebrow maintenance, especially if you have bushy or straggly hairs.

Before we get into the details, all products that you decide to purchase for this, try to find the ones that uses more natural products. So a lot of plant extract, natural oils and butters, and collagen protein. This is especially good if you’re interested in achieving younger looking skin. Collagen helps build healthy skin cells and is partially responsible for skin’s youthful elasticity, softness and firmness. Now that we’ve cleared the air lets get into the steps and products! First thing is to exfoliate. This may be a broken record to some but it is probably one of the most important step in your skincare routine for the face (and body!) It helps with the removal of dry/dead skin cells on the surface of the skin. Exfoliation not only helps many skin problems, it also increases blood circulation, which in turn helps achieve healthy and glowing skin. BE CAREFUL not to over-exfoliate. If you over do it, it can cause skin irritation and inflammation, which can actually accelerate aging. You should
try to exfoliate two to three times a week for normal to combination skin, and once a week for sensitive skin. Next is toning your skin. It’s important to buy a toner and use it after you wash your face/exfoliate. Toners help remove oil and traces of dirt. (Toners are most helpful and necessary for people with oily or acne-prone skin) Toners also shrink your pores, just apply a small amount on a cotton pad and gently blot or wipe your face. Another benefit is that it helps restore your skin’s pH balance. The skin is acidic naturally and when you clean your face, it can mess up the natural balance and your skin will work to try to get it back which can lead to oily skin, but using a toner will help restore the balance. Final steps are to get an anit-aging serum / collagen serums and moisturizer. These serums help with soothing and brightening of the skin and the long term use of these serums result in healthier and firmer skin, even skin tone, and fewer wrinkles. Choose serums that contain ingredients such as stable antioxidants, essential oils, retinol, vitamin C, and vitamin E. Serums do not replace moisturizers, so make sure to moisturize your face daily. It’ll boost hydration in your skin, prevent flaking and dullness, and work as a protective layer of moisture that lasts all day.
